When I woke up, I realized my kidney was gone” - 23-year-old Gambian Human Trafficking survivor shares her horrific experience in Lebanon

Two Gambian Human Trafficking survivors,  Fatou Badjie and Amie have shared their horrific experiences in Lebanon and Egypt respectively.
 
Immediately after she graduated from university, Badjie, 23, was approached by a close friend about employment prospects in Lebanon. The friend told her that there were job opportunities and if she decided to go there she’d earn a decent salary. She felt strongly that the friend would wish her nothing but success. She agreed to go to Lebanon.
 
In an interview with the Chronicles, Badije said;
“So I just jumped into it without asking questions. He came with a document and I signed it without hesitation,” she explains.
In the signed document, Fatou agreed to pay D3,000 as deposit before her friend would process her travel documents. To her, this was an opportunity to get her family out of poverty. I paid the money and the next day he brought my passport and visa. Everything was intact. The following week, I left for Senegal.”

 
Excited and hopeful, Fatou boarded a plane in the early hours of 26th June 2014, and flew more than 3500 miles to Beirut in Lebanon.
 
“I met an immigration officer who immediately took my documents and asked me to follow him. He took me to a small room where I found over 100 girls of different nationalities.”
 
One of the girls told Fatou that she was sold by human traffickers. Fatou became scared and confused. She stayed awake the whole night wondering what would happen to her the next day. In the morning, she confirmed she was in trouble.
“Some women came and started touching me and the other girls. One of them touched me and asked me to follow her. She told me that she had bought me and that I was her slave. I started laughing because I thought it was a joke.”
 
There was no joke and Fatou was actually trafficked to be bought for modern day slavery. The woman took her to Hamra, a neighborhood in Beirut where she laid down the house rules.
“She told me that my job was to take care of her husband who had cancer.”
Bathing the sick man, changing his clothes, carrying him on her back and feeding him became Fatou’s daily routine. I’d wake up at 6am and I would not stop working or go to bed unless the old man managed to sleep. I was so frustrated. I never thought I could go through this kind of trauma in my life.”

 
When Fatou got fed up, she approached her boss and told her she wanted to leave. “I told her that the contract I signed in The Gambia said I was coming to Lebanon to work in a restaurant and earn a living. She told me she spent a lot of money on me and I’d have to pay the money back before I could leave.”
 
Fatou was compelled to stay on even though she never received any salary for her work. But her conditions worsened after that conversation with her boss. She’d put a hot place of rice on Fatou’s back and eat from there. Other times she’d face more severe punishment than that.
 
One day she accompanied the boss to the hospital not knowing there was a plan to do an operation on her.
“When we went to the operations room I was scared. She told me to sit and wait. As I was waiting, I dozed off and I didn’t remember anything. When I woke up I realised that I was operated and my left kidney was removed, without my consent,” Fatou says.
 
It would later emerge that the boss’ sick husband was in need of a kidney and Fatou’s kidney was given to him.
 
Even with one kidney removed, Fatou’s nightmares continued. She was arrested and jailed after cutting her boss with a knife in self-defense. In jail, she was regularly beaten and the guards made several attempts to sexually assault her.
 
After 18 months in jail, she escaped and ran away to a sea side. Through the help of a fisherman she met, Fatou processed her documents and returned to The Gambia in April 2018.
 
Amie’s story:
Amie Jobe was trafficked to Egypt in December 2014 by a friend who worked for the immigration department. He told her that there were lot of job opportunities in Egypt and she’d earn up to $450 a month.
 
Once Amie accepted the offer, the officer processed her passport and introduced her to a group of Sierra Leoneans based in The Gambia. They took her to Dakar and handed her over to another agent who helped her to get an Egyptian visa.
“When I arrived at the airport in Cairo, my luggage was taken from me by two men who put me in their car and drove away. It was a 12-hour journey,” she tells The Chronicle. “When we arrived at our destination, they put me in a room and locked me in for about an hour.”
 
The men later confiscated her passport and told her that she was sold into slavery. For the next two weeks, she was locked inside the room. At the end of the two weeks, an Egyptian woman picked her from the agents’ house.
“The woman bought me. When I got to her house, she told me that my task was to take care of her three kids. From that day, the kids became my responsibility. She forced me to wake up as early as 5am to look after the kids.”
 
Three months later, Amie fell out with her boss after a heated argument which resulted to the boss hitting her. She wanted Amie gone, at 2am.
“I told her I wasn’t leaving without the salaries she owed me for the three months I worked for her. She ended up giving me $50 instead of $450 a month. $400 went to the Nigerian agents who received me in Egypt.”
 
Amie had to walk 90 kilometers in the middle of the night. “There was no car and I was imagining all kind of things. I could have been kidnapped, killed or raped.
 
Amie was indeed tortured by the police and sexually harassed by the Nigerian agents before she was able to return to The Gambia.
 
Today, both Fatou and Amie dedicate their time to the Network of Girls against Human Trafficking, an organization they set up along with other survivors of human trafficking to sensitize Gambians about the human trafficking and help combat it.
“There are so many issues that can’t be forgotten in this whole situation. I didn’t think that our own brothers and sisters would be so mean that they’d take us from our country and sell us out as slaves just for money. If you go through these things you can’t forget them,” says Amie.
 
The Gambia is listed by the US State Department as a Tier 2 country, and its 2018 Trafficking in Persons Report, the State Department said the Government of The Gambia did not fully meet the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking, though it was making significant efforts to do so.
“Gambian women are subjected to forced labor and sex trafficking in the Middle East, including Lebanon and Kuwait. Authorities have identified Gambian trafficking victims in Egypt, UAE, and Finland,” the US State Department said.

President Buhari signs N8.91trn 2019 budget into law

President Buhari has just signed the 2019 appropriation bill of N8.91 trillion into law.  
 
The national assembly passed the budget into law after increasing the budget size from its initial N8.83 trillion.
 
President Buhari while signing the budget said he will work with the incoming 9th National Assembly to return to the January-December budget cycle.
 
He also said he will work with the 9th Assembly to have a more workable document that will facilitate the development of the nation as intended in the proposal submitted to the National Assembly.

I will probe Bindow's administration - Adamawa governor-elect, Ahmadu Fintiri declares

Ahmadu Fintiri, Adamawa Governor-elect has said he's ready to step on toes to address injustice against the people of the state by the outgoing administration of Gov. Jibrilla Bindow.
 
He made this known on Saturday in Yola while receiving report by a 67-man State Transition Committee. He said findings by the committee revealed a lot of breeches and mismanagement of government’s funds that needed to be looked into.

Quote:“We shall rise and boldly face the challenges, fully conscious that we were voted to fix them. We will not turn a blind eye to breaches of the law, mismanagement of funds, or abuse of privilege. Adamawa State, our only home has been battered and bruised but I am optimistic that it will heal.  
“Let me restate the call on our people to join hands in the task of correcting the ills of the past. In doing so, we shall not hesitate to step on toes where public interest has been compromised. As a corrective government popularly elected by the people, we will not hesitate to step on toes in the interest and advancement of public good,” Fintiri said.
While lamenting that the outgoing administration received about N332 billion federal allocation with nothing much to show, Fintiri said his administration would look into the report in detail with the aim of implementing its salient recommendations. Presenting the report earlier, the Chairman of the committee, Aliyu Ismaila, said the outgoing administration messed up the state in various sectors and is leaving a debt of N115 billion.
Quote:“It is disheartening to note that the outgoing government had, from inception, always been taking over-draft to augment salary payments while internally generated revenue were being collected but not applied judiciously in the interest of taxpayers in the state. While also the government had failed to create businesses for the state and even resort to the sales of state-owned assets in corporate organizations simply to service personal interest,” he said.
Ismaila said that the committee found out that some of the lands sold out by the outgoing administration included school land and a historical German cemetery of 1948.  The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Mr Fintiri of PDP defeated Mr Bindow of APC in the general election.

President Muhammadu Buhari will today meet with governors of the 19 northern states in Abuja over the worsening security situation in the region.

The region has been enveloped by violence arising from Boko Haram insurgency, herdsmen killing of farmers, armed banditry and kidnapping.

Only yesterday, many were killed and houses torched in Dutse Uku, Rikkos and Cele Bridge areas of Jos, the capital of Plateau State, in a renewed orgy of violence that the police said had been brought under control.

Reacting to the situation yesterday, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) blamed the president and his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), for the growing despondency in the country, saying their policies were responsible.

The former Catholic Archbishop of Abuja Diocese, Cardinal John Onaiyekan, also expressed his disappointment with the state of the nation yesterday, warning that the country was dancing on the brink of chaos.

But Vice President Yemi Osinbajo thought differently, saying the future of the nation is bright and contended that the prevailing situation is a temporary challenge that would be overcome.

The Chairman of Northern Governors’ Forum and Governor of Plateau State, Mr. Simon Lalong, disclosed the proposed meeting of the governors and Buhari yesterday during a special church service to mark the inauguration of his second tenure.

He said his colleagues in the north were deeply worried by the insecurity and under-development in the region and had decided to meet with the president before the commencement of his second tenure in order to articulate ways of addressing the challenges.

Lalong said: “During our meeting under Northern Governors’ Forum, they said let us go and meet with Mr. President.

“As the new Chairman of the forum, I said I have not resumed. But they said we must go and meet with him before his inauguration on May 29 so that we will tell him the problems of the north and how we can address the challenges of insecurity, under-development and other matters affecting the people. That is why we have agreed to meet with him tomorrow in Abuja.”

Lalong urged the people to pray for the success of the meeting to enable the northern region move forward.


PDP blames APC, Buhari for Escalated Despondency

Meanwhile, the PDP in a statement yesterday decried what it described as the escalated despondency, depression and misery in the country since the 2019 presidential election.

The main opposition party described as a national tragedy, the rising spate of suicides, slavery mission abroad, child abandonment and other social degeneration occasioned by the worsening economic hardship, poverty, hunger and rising insecurity under the APC administration.

The party in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan, lamented that such social ills, which it said was a direct response to bad governance, occur when citizens are overwhelmed by gloom, with no hope in sight.

The party stressed that most Nigerians have become downhearted in the face of an administration that wrecked the country’s once robust economy and divided the people.

It stated: “Banditry, insurgency, marauding, bloodletting and kidnapping with unmentionable ransoms, have almost become daily occurrences. Our citizens are now battling with the worst kind of siege mentality.

“Constitutional violations, human rights abuses, arbitrary arrests, extra-judicial killings, assault on perceived dissenting voices and attempt at annexation of our institutions of democracy, particularly the judiciary, signpost a nation in dire strait.”

The PDP, however, called on Nigerians not to despair but stand firm in their collective determination to retrieve, what it called its presidential mandate, at the tribunal.


Again Violence Erupts in Jos, Many Killed, Houses Torched

In the meantime, security agencies said yesterday that they had brought under control the violence that erupted in Dutse Uku, Rikkos, Cele Bridge areas of Jos.

Confirming the incident, Police Public Relation Officer in Plateau State, Mr. Mathias Tyopev, assured the people that security men have been drafted to arrest the situation.

He said: “We have received reports of tension around Dutse Uku, Rikkos, Cele Bridge and we have mobilised our personnel to the area.

“As we speak, the Area Commander, Jos Metropolis is there on the ground.”

A resident of the area, who identified himself as Mr. Paul Musa, said there had been tension in the area since last week when a boy from Angwan Miango was found dead at the boundary between the community and neighboring Rikkos, a community of Hausa extractions in the metropolis.

The tension emanating from the killing was, however, doused by the security agents.

Again, on Sunday morning, another boy from the same Angwan Miango was allegedly killed when he went to wash at Cele River, a stream that runs between the Angwan Miango and Rikkos community.

Angered by the spate of killing, the natives from Angwan Miango took the fight to their Hausa neighbours in Rikkos. This degenerated into full-blown mayhem with gunshots rending the air and houses set ablaze.

Some churches, on getting wind of the crisis, hurriedly wind up their services in order to dismiss worshippers.

Meanwhile, the security agents are currently making efforts to control the affected communities and avoid further escalation of the crisis.


Nigeria Dancing on the Brink of Chaos, Says Onaiyekan

In a related development, the John Cardinal Onaiyekan yesterday warned that Nigeria is indulging in the risky game of dancing on the brink of chaos, saying that the signs are obvious for all who care to see.

He challenged the president to change his leadership habit as he starts a new term, if Nigeria is to recover from its present socio-political and economic crises.

But, on his part, Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo urged Christians to take the lead of giving hope to Nigerians, expressing confidence that the country’s future is bright.

He said the federal government was committed to resolving all the challenges confronting the nation.

On his part, former military Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (rtd), urged Nigerian politicians to promote governance in the interest of the people and pray for Buhari to succeed.

They stated these at the 2019 Presidential Inauguration Inter-Denominational Church Service with the theme: ‘Setting the Nation on Higher Levels of Peace and Development in the Fear of God’ in Abuja yesterday.

Onaiyekan said the ranks between the poor and the rich are swelling by the day, while the poor watch in frustration at the affluence of the very few cruising in a different world.

He noted that such wide socio-economic disparity has led to anger, tension, violence and outright criminality in the land, adding that all is not well.

In his sermon, titled “Let Us Choose Life Not Death,” the Cardinal said: “This is no time for celebration of victory or for lamentation over defeat. Rather, it is time to pull efforts together, with the grace of God, to tackle the serious challenges before us.

“At this moment, we would do well to acknowledge our failure to do things in the right way. Here the words of the psalmist should challenge each of us: ‘If you Oh Lord should mark our guilt, who would survive?’ The blame game of pointing accusing fingers at others will not carry us far.

“For a positive change to take place, we must all be ready for a sincere change of heart, from the lowest to the highest, but especially at the highest levels. Empty boasts and bare-face denial of the realities around us cannot build a nation.

“We are in the house of God, and before God we must tell the truth. The Lord Jesus has told us that The Truth will make us free. The truth is that our nation is not in a state for us to rejoice.

“The ranks of the poor are swelling by the day, hopeless and helpless, as they watch in frustration the affluence of the very few cruising in a different world. Such wide socio-economic disparity has led to anger, tension, violence and outright criminality in the land. All is not well.

“But all is not lost either. As we embrace a new term of government, it should be for us a new opportunity to change ways and review habits of governance, for a better Nigeria.

“We can and we should do this. God has endowed us with adequate resources to achieve this, resources that we unfortunately turn into crises and problems. Ethnicity and religion are two cases in point.”

The cleric described ethnic diversity as God’s will and gift that the nation ought to appreciate and celebrate, advising Nigerians to beware of those who seek to manipulate this in a game of divide and rule, for selfish interests.

He added, “In our emerging global world, we should be building on our long experience of living together across ethnic lines, if we are not to allow ourselves to be left behind in our fast developing modern world.”

Onaiyekan advised that it is important for the leaders to note that many have already lost hope.

Government officials, including, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Boss Mustapha; Head of Service, Mrs. Winifred Oyo-Ita; Central Bank Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele; Minister of Transportation, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi; Minister of Agriculture, Chief Audu Ogbeh; as well representatives of the military and police chiefs; diplomats; senior government officials and delegations of various churches and Christian denominations across Abuja and the country attended the event.

  Police Arrest 10 Traffic Robbers In Lagos. Photos

Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command says it has apprehended over 10 suspected traffic robbers and recovery of firearms and ammunition in different parts of Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial city.

The state police command made this known in a statement issued by Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Bala Elkana who said that the surveillance Patrol strategy introduced by the Commissioner of Police, Zubairu Muazu targeted towards tackling the menace of traffic robbery in Lagos State led to the arrest of the suspects.

According to him, on 24th May, 2019 at about 0530hrs, the surveillance Patrol team from Ketu Police Station, foiled a robbery attempt at Kosofe bus stop.

His statement obtained by Nairafame reads;
“The leader of the gang, popularly known as Gabazine and two other members were arrested. One Samsung phone snatched from a victim was recovered and handed over to the owner. On 25th May, 2019 the same surveillance team on undercover operation at the same spot arrested two traffic robbery suspects attempting to rob some unsuspecting road user. Two jack Knives and a toy pistol were recovered.

“On the same date at about 0005hrs, surveillance Patrol team deployed to Ketu bus stop, arrested two traffic robbery suspects, namely: Ayomide Ayobami and Taye Onofowokan, both living at Agboyi Ketu. One pistol with three live ammunition and a jack knife were recovered from them.

“On the same date at about 0100hrs, surveillance Patrol team attached to Festac Police Station arrested one Bamidele Ogunbanjo, 30, of Prayer Estate, Amuwo Odofin. One locally made pistol with one live ammunition were recovered. Investigation is ongoing and all the suspects will be charged to Court,” he said.

The Rivers State Police Command has debunked rumours of a terrorist attack on Community Secondary School (CSS), Oroworukwo (D-Line) in Port Harcourt City local government area of Rivers State. Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, Nnamdi Omoni, in a statement issued in Port Harcourt, said the incidence that occurred in the school, had no resemblance of cult attack.

The statement reads in part: “The attention of the Rivers State Police Command has been drawn to a video making the rounds and trending on social media, on the alleged attack on students and staff of Community Secondary School, Oroworokwo, Port Harcourt by student cultists and unknown persons. “Honestly, the command is disturbed by this development and consequently wishes to disabuse the minds of the public and state the true position as follows; “That on May 23, 2019 at about 10:30 hours, the Principal of Community Secondary School, Oroworokwo, Mra. Ruth Major launched a complaint with Olu Obasanjo Police on the denotation of a chemical weapon (canister) by two students of the school; which caused stir and panic in the school.

“That on the receipt of the compliant, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) CSP Lucky Omoniyi detailed ASP Love Tenalo to the scene, whereupon two students namely: Nicodemus Nkaparo ‘m’ 18 years and Darlington Sylvanus ‘m’ 17 years were arrested and taken to the station. “At this point, it has become increasingly necessary to state in an unmistakeable term that; that the incident at Community Secondary School, Oroworokwo was not a terrorist attack or any attempt to kidnap students.

“That it has no resemblance of cult attack. that investigation is still going on with a view to unveiling the circumstances surrounding the incident and bringing the culprits to justice “That so far, normalcy has been restored to the school and it’s environs as normal school activities have resumed in earnest. That the Rivers State Police Command is poised to ensure that sanity is maintained in all primary and tertiary institutions and to guard against breach of security in schools.” Omoni said the two suspects admitted in their statements that they actually detonated the teargas canisters, without knowing that it was a chemical weapon.

He said: “At the station, the Principal made statement relating to her complaint and two suspects were cautioned and equally made statements, where they admitted, detonating the substance but however denied knowing that it was a chemical substance capable of causing panic and tension.

“In his statement, Nicodemus Nkaparo confessed to have brought the canister from their house, which was part of the belongings of his deceased elder brother who was a policeman. He stated further that he did not know that it was a chemical weapon (teargas) which can cause panic and tension. “But unknown to him, his friend, Darlington Sylvanus detonated the substance, which threw the whole school into confusion, as people scampered for safety while some sustained injuries.

“That at the end of the interrogation, the two suspects were given administrative bail and released unconditionally to report back on Monday, May 27, 2019. “That as part of the investigation, the Police team executed search in the houses of the suspects but nothing incriminating was found.

Furthermore, the team visited the scene and the hospital where three students were receiving medical attention.

“That at the end of the exercise, the team called all the staff and students and assured them of protection and warned them to be law-abiding as police will not spare any effort in dealing with delinquent students.”

Student of Federal Polytechnic Oko allegedly commits suicide shortly after telling close friends he was "going on a journey of no return''

A student of the Federal Polytechnic Oko, Anambra State popularly known as Mr HOD, allegedy committed suicide few days ago.
 
According to reports, the man from Enugu State, called his close friends on Wednesday, to tell them that he was going on a journey of no return before drinking Sniper, a lethal pesticide which has become a popular choice for suicidal Nigerians.

Suspected kidnappers who attempted to abduct a pastor of the Redeeed Christian Church of God in Edo state yesterday Sunday May 26th, were apprehended and handed over to the police by students of the Benin Technical College (BTC) and members of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG).
 
Eyewitnesses say the suspects had earlier snatched a Toyota Camry car from its owner, but later abandoned it behind Church of God Mission International (CGMi), in the area. They proceeded to the Redeemed Christian Church God (RCCG), where they dispossessed worshippers of their money, phones, other valuables, abducted the pastor, and whisked him away in his Nissan Xtera SUV with registration Number, LAGOS: EKY 353 CA.
 
Luck, however, ran out of the three-man gang when the students, the vigilante men and some of the worshippers gave them a hot chase, barricaded their vehicle, rescued the pastor and apprehended the kidnappers. They were immediately handed over to men of the Okhoro Divisional Police station. 
 
Items allegedly recovered from the suspects include two double barrel-cut-to size guns, a Camry car and the Nissan SUV belonging to the RCCG Pastor.

The Nigerian Prison Service in Kano state have arrested a woman, Rifkatu Anthony, pictured above, for trying to smuggle 39 wraps of Indian Hemps into the prison.  
The details of the arrest was contained in a statement released by prison authorities.

Quote:The Intelligence Unit of the Nigerian Prisons Service (NPS) attached to Kano Central Prison has intercepted a female visitor, Rifkatu Anthony, for attempting to smuggle 39 wraps of Indian Hemps into the prison.
The suspect from Badawa Quarters in Kano metropolis cleverly concealed the hard drug in harmless packs with the intention to deliver them to inmates in the prison.
Upon interrogation, Ms Anthony feigned ignorance of the Illicit substance in her possession claiming that the items were given to her by one ThankGod for delivery to the prison inmates.
The Controller of Prisons, Kano, Magaji Abdullah, had commended the officers and men of the command for their untiring efforts in ridding the service of the menace of trafficking.
Recently, the Controller General of Prisons, Ja’afaru Ahmed, approved the the dismissal of prison personnel for aiding trafficking (smuggling) and illicit drugs into the prison yard for prisoners.
The action of the controller general was part of a concerted effort by the administration to continue to maintain discipline and ensure that inmates in prison custody were only handled by those with the required rectitude to do so.
“There is no gainsaying that exposing inmates to the use of hard drugs is an anathema to the reformation goal of the Prisons Service as it does not only precipitate health complications but also constitutes security risk to innocent lives in and around the prison,,” the statement noted.
Mr. Ja’afaru therefore, warned that any officer caught aiding or failing to apprehend smugglers will be shown the way out of the service as they have no business being in a character reformation agency. He had assured the public that the management of the NPS would remain irrevocably committed to sustain the peace and calm now existing in prisons across the country in order to enhance reformation and rehabilitation of offenders in prisons custody.

Imo state governor, Rochas Okorocha, has said that the seizure of his Certificate of Return as the senator-elect of the Imo West senatorial district, is only getting him prepared for his utmost political dream which is to become the president of Nigeria.
 
Governor Okorocha who will be exiting office come Wednesday May 29th, said this when he spoke during his valedictory thanksgiving service held at the Government House Chapel in Owerri. The governor who accused the elite class of ganging up against him, said that those who want me to go to prison will go to prison before me.

A man who works as a PA has taken to social media to cry out for help after his Director at work threatened to sack him for denying her sex.

In his narration on a Facebook group, the man identified as Frank Onyekachukwu stated that he started as a driver in the organization, despite being a graduate. He was driving the manager before he was assigned to the director who found out he was a graduate and then elevated him to the position of a Personal Assistant.

She however wanted him to sleep with her so he could keep his job

I have a problem at my place of work and I don’t know how to handle it. I was employed in a company last two years as a driver though am a graduate of chemical engineer but based on that’s no job in the country I have to accept the driving job in other to survive.

I was a driver to the manager of the company for 6months and from there I got to know the director of that company a ( WOMAN ) but she is a widow, one faithful evening the company had a board meeting in EKO HOTEL which ended up around 11pm and director didn’t come with her driver that night then the manager told me to drive the director home that 9it that he can drive himself.

I did as he told me which the director started using me as her own personal driver for 2months bfor she got to know that am a graduate and she changed my position from driver to her personal assistant and pays me very well as a graduate and employed another driver.

My major work now is to follow her with company’s documents when ever she is going for a meeting within the country.

The issues now is that she is forcing me into sleeping with her which I turned her down several times and she threatened me to resign or she will sack me by herself if I didn’t agree with her conditions from the company.

The story is much but because of time I have to stop here.

Plz friends advise me on what to do am depressed right now.

As President Muhammadu Buhari, who doubles as the petroleum minister, completes his first term in office, stakeholders in the oil and gas sector have insisted that his performance in the sector is far below expectations.

The stakeholders, who spoke to The Guardian yesterday, stated that Buhari did not deserve pass mark considering that critical issues, including industry reforms, transparency and accountability, overhaul of dilapidated refineries and payment of subsidy are yet to be addressed.

They lamented that investments worth over $200 billion have been stranded due to failure to pass the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB), just as they noted that promises to address the various demands of the people of the oil-producing region, including addressing a 16-point request by the Pan-Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) and re-awarding oil blocks whose licences have expired, remained unkept.

Although the Senate at the weekend passed the reworked Petroleum Industry Governance Bill (PIGB), to which President Muhammadu Buhari had earlier declined assent due to ambiguities and improper legislative drafting, if signed this time, it will take time for more positive changes to occur in the sector.

To them, the administration was not transparent enough about the management of subsidy payments for petroleum products’ imports as it allowed the NNPC to monopolise the process.

Former president of the Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP) and one-time chairman of Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) national stakeholders working group, Ledum Mitee said the administration’s performance in the sector was more in terms of politics than keeping promises.

Mitee, who said the promises on the cleanup of Ogoni had remained elusive, urged the new cabinet to usher in reforms that would drive investment, economic growth, and job creation while meeting the demand of the Niger Delta region.

“As the administration sets to begin its new phase, my expectation would be that it sincerely rights the wrongs of the past and be guided by justice, especially as it relates to its rush to resume oil exploitation in Ogoni without any meaningful engagement with the people and compliance with extant laws and regulations,” he stated.

The Director-General of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), Muda Yusuf, said the pace of reforms in the oil and gas sector remained painfully slow over the past four years.

According to him, the stalling of the PIB has impeded the progress of the sector.

“In the upstream segment, contracting processes under the joint venture partnership took between 12 and 36 months. This was a major problem for investors in the sector. This is one reason there are no new investors coming into the sector.

“The downstream was equally plagued by the excessive regulation which made it difficult to unlock the huge potential of the oil and gas sector. It is desirable to fully liberalise the sector so that investors can inject the desired private capital. The price cap on the petroleum products and the dominance of the state-owned oil company [NNPC] had practically shut out the private sector in the downstream oil sector. There is a huge potential for investment, jobs, capital and revenue to be unlocked in the sector through appropriate reforms.”

The Director, Sub-Saharan Africa Research at Wood Mackenzie, Gail Anderson, had said Buhari’s second term could bring stability within key state bodies, such as NNPC and the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, but warned that the desired results may remain elusive.

On the delay in the passage of the PIB, Anderson said: “With major final investment decisions (FIDs) highly unlikely until the issue is resolved, these negotiations will go a long way to determine whether Nigeria’s world-class deep water has an attractive long-term future. There is a lot at stake in the next four years.”

A former Director General of the West African Institute for Financial and Economic Management (WAIFEM), and professor of economics and public policy, University of Uyo, Akpan Ekpo also said that the administration performed poorly, especially by failing on key reforms and leaving out the demand for a diversified economy.

Ekpo said: “In my view, the oil sector only had marginal performance. A country that exports oil should not have business importing refined products. It drains our reserves. We need to commercial NNPC. We need to stop the monopoly of NNPC, revamp the refineries and stop subsidy.”

A principal consultant at DeltR Energy Ltd. Ronke Onadeko, who also scored the administration low in performance, said the new cabinet must deregulate the downstream section, reform the NNPC and create clear plans for the sector.

With the plan to end gas flaring next year, Onadeko advised that the new administration must prioritise the decision by investing in gas infrastructure.

However, the president, Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists (NAPE), Ajibola Oyebamiji, said that the oil and gas industry witnessed a lot of improvement in the past four years as against the era of dwindling global oil prices.

Meanwhile, a report has revealed that NNPC, between February 2018 and February 2019, exported crude oil and gas worth of $5.94billion.

The February 2019 edition of the corporation’s Monthly Financial and Operations Report (MFOR) released yesterday showed that the group posted a total export sale of crude oil and gas of $490.03 million in February, which is 32.45 per cent higher than the previous month’s sale.

The report noted that crude oil export sales contributed $350.29million (71.48 per cent) of the dollar transactions compared with $240.23million contribution in the previous month.

The report equally explained that the export gas sales amounted to $139.74 million in the month under review.

While attacks on pipelines have remained high in the last few months, the development declined in February by 40 per cent when compared with the reported incidents of January 2019.

According to the report, a total of 137 pipeline points were vandalised, which translates to 40 per cent drop from the 230 points vandalized in January 2019.

In the report, Mosimi-Ibadan petroleum products pipeline accounted for 72 per cent of the breaks while Kaduna, Port Harcourt, Warri and Gombe lines made up the remaining 28 per cent.

The report attributed the drop in the line break to efforts by NNPC, the local communities and other stakeholders to reduce and eventually eliminate pipeline vandalism.

To ensure continuous increase in petrol supply and effective distribution across the country, 1.27billion litres translating to 45.53million liters/day were supplied for the month.

In terms of natural gas offtake, commercialisation and utilisation, the records indicated that within the period, daily average natural gas supply to gas power plants increased by 8.23 per cent to 819.85million standard cubic feet (mmscf), equivalent to power generation of 3,336MW. The figure is an improvement from the January 2019 record where an average of 757mmscfd was supplied to generate 3,124MW.

Also, out of the 223.23billion cubic feet (bcf) of gas supplied in February 2019, a total of 127.62bcf of gas was commercialized, consisting of 37.77bcf and 89.85bcf for the domestic and export market respectively. This translates to a total supply of 1,349.03mmscfd of gas to the domestic market and 3,780.24mmscfd of gas supplied to the export market for the month.

This implies that 57.17 per cent of the average daily gas produced was commercialised while the balance of 42.83 per cent was re-injected, used as upstream fuel gas or flared.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has blamed President Muhammadu Buhari for rise in suicides and other social ills in the country.

The opposition party made this allegation in a statement signed by the PDP’s spokesperson, Kola Ologbondiyan, on Sunday, May 26, 2019, Pulse NG reports.

The party further blamed the ruling All Progressive Congress and the President for doing nothing in the face of rising insecurity across the country.

The party said:

“In the last few months, the news media has been awash with horrible reports of teenage suicide in our country.

“Banditry, insurgency, marauding, bloodletting and kidnapping with unmentionable ransoms, have almost become daily occurrences. Our citizenry is now battling with the worst kind of siege mentality.

“Constitutional violations, human rights abuses, arbitrary arrests, extra-judicial killings, assault on perceived dissenting voices and attempt at annexation of our institutions of democracy, particularly the judiciary, signposts a nation in dire strait.

“Misery has set in. This is evident in the shrinking of our nation’s Gross Domestic Produce (GDP) to 2.1percent in the first quarter of 2019.

“It is saddening that at the time Nigerians ought to be celebrating, they are rather forlorn, committing suicide and exiting the country in droves.

“Most Nigerians have become downhearted in the face of an administration that wrecked our once robust economy and divided our people; in the face of worsening joblessness, piling bills, hunger and diseases; in the face of incompetence, lies, and unfulfilled promises of free homes, monthly allowance to unemployed youth and the poor, bringing the naira to the same value as the US Dollar, creating of 5 million new jobs, ending of insurgency in three months and myriad of other false promises.”

The plights of some Nigerian girls sold as as sex slaves in Mali have been brought up to the notice of the ECOWAS parliament by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, NAPTIP.

NAPTIP Director-General, Julie Okah-Donli, while speaking at a presentation to members of the ECOWAS Parliament. revealed that Nigerian girls were being sold for between N210,000 and N240,000 to work as prostitutes, Vanguard reports.

NAPTIP is seeking an agreement between Nigeria and neighbouring West African countries to end the practice of Nigerian girls being used as sex slaves in Mali.

Presenting the report of the fact-finding mission to Mali, Okah-Donli said that after being sold, the girls were made to pay back between N1.08 million and N1.2 million, usually within eight months, to their madams.
She said:

“There are more than one million Nigerians residing in Mali. About 20,000 of these Nigerians are girls believed to be victims of trafficking and the number increases by 50 per day.

“Many victims are deceived to leave their livelihoods in Nigeria for greener pastures in ‘Mali”

“Some of the victims are abducted from Nigeria, including those that arrive in school uniforms.”
“On arrival at the border town between Burkina Faso and Mali, many of the girls are sold off for CFA 350,000 to 400,000; their new owners then make them pay back about CFA 1.6 million to CFA 2 million with one CFA being 0.6 Naira,” she said.

Okah-Donli said that as part of efforts to curb the trend, the agency recommended among other things, that Nigeria should develop a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Mali, Burkina Faso, Benin Republic, Guinea and Senegal.

Okah-Donli said,

“There is need for comprehensive sensitisation of rescued victims before repatriation and a comprehensive blueprint worked out for tracing, empowerment and rehabilitation of victims”.

A female officer of the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency, LASTMA, was crushed to death by a trailer in the Apapa arae of Lagos state on Saturday evening May 25th.
 
The deceased identified as Arogundade Remilekun, was said to be at the back of the truck directing traffic when the truck driver reversed. Unknown to him, Arogundade was behind his truck. She was crushed and died instantly.
 
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of LASTMA, Mamud Hassan, said the driver of the trailer fled the scene and abandoned the vehicle which has been impounded by the police. Hassan disclosed that the deceased was survived by her two-year old daughter, a husband who worked in one of the Local Governments in Lagos and a grandmother.
He added that the remains of the victim has been deposited at the Lagos Island General Hospital morgue.

A teenage boy simply identified as Hope has been arrested after going berserk and hacking his father to death in Amoda, Imo State.
 
He attacked his dad, Chief Paul Eke, in the early hours of Thursday, shortly after he returned from a trip to Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

It was gathered that the boy lost his mom to sickness, about a week ago, and she is yet to be buried. When asked for the motivation behind his action, he couldn’t give any reasonable answer.

26-year-old Wura Adewura Latifat Bello, an accounting graduate from the University of Lagos (UNILAG), who has been missing since last week, has been found dead in a canal, according to her family member.

Wura who lives in Gowon Estate near Egbeda in Lagos, disappeared on her way back from work at Ikeja.

Adewura was declared missing by her parents after leaving her office in Lagos on May 15th, 2019.

This corroborates the story of a Twitter user who said she was found dead in Mosan canal area during the heavy downpour on Wednesday last week.

Personnel of the Nigerian army, Nigerian navy, Nigeria police force who were among the captives disclosed the locations they were captured.

The Nigerian military has continued to suffer heavy losses as Boko Haram fighters have launched several attacks on their formation in the north-east.

On May 3, the Islamic State (IS) said it killed 10 soldiers in an attack on a barrack in Magumeri, a community in the state.

Former President of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan has saluted the efforts of the Bayelsa State Governor, the Honourable Henry Seriake Dickson in educational development saying he has surpassed expectations.

Dr. Jonathan who gave the commendation at the launch of the Bayelsa Education Development Trust Fund in Yenagoa, noted that the governor’s decision to deploy the tool of education to the development and emancipation of the society was the right way to go.

A statement by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media Relations, Mr. Fidelis Soriwei quoted the former president as saying that the initiative and the landmark achievements of the governor would outlive his eight years as it having been backed by law.

This comes days after rumours that the duo are in cold war over Bayelsa PDP guber ticket.

“ Nigeria placed a contract for six Mi -35 M combat helicopters in August 2014 . The Nigerian Air Force received the first batch of two helicopters in December 2016 , while the second batch of two helicopters was delivered in April 2018 . ”

The NAF Director of Public Relations and Information , Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, had yet to pick call or respond to a message on estimates of the loss as of press time .

In January 2018 , a NAF Mi - 17 attack helicopter had also crashed in a counter- insurgency operation in Borno State , with claims from the Boko Haram factional leader, Abubakar Shekau , that his fighters shot down the military aircraft .
The Defence Headquarters , Abuja , however, refuted Shekau ’s claims.

Since January 2019 , at least five army bases in the North -East have been attacked by Boko Haram and the Islamic State West African Province fighters , leading not only to loss of soldiers , but also costly weapons .

Some weapons were also destroyed by the sect ’s Improvised Explosive Devices’ explosions .
SUNDAY PUNCH learnt that Boko Haram attacked army bases in Geidam , Yobe State ; Banki and a Forward Operating Base in Mararrabar Kimba , both in Borno State .

The fighters also attacked bases in the Gubio and the Magumeri Local Government Areas of Borno, carting away undisclosed ammunition .
Although the army didn’t confirm the loss of its weapons , evidence reinforced the developments .

On May 13 , the army confirmed that its 154 Task Force Battalion Commander , Lt Col Yusuf Aminu, and two soldiers were killed by IEDs planted by the Boko Haram on the Mauli -Borgozo Road . During the incident , two gun trucks and a Tata truck were damaged by the explosion , according to sources .

Estimates showed that the army had lost over N 200 m worth of weapons to insurgency since January, although some of them were currently being recovered from the terrorists .

The acting Director , Army Public Relations , Col Sagir Musa , did not returned our correspondent’ s call or respond to a text message sent to his phone as of press time .

The Chief of the Army Staff, Lt Gen Tukur Buratai , had , on Wednesday , assured troops of plans to induct more weapons into the Operation Lafiya Dole to enhance the counter- terrorism war .

A young girl, Balkisu, died yesterday inside an airplane from Sudan to Nigeria.

According to Twitter user, nainna_jr who shared the story, Balkisu was not sick, neither was there a plane crash.

On the D-day of the event which was advertised and proclaimed beforehand with so much fanfare, Lai Muhammed was struck with a deadly political blow that resonated throughout the state and beyond. The top party faithful in the state who were expected to grace the occasion by default were conspicuously absent. Rows of empty seats earmarked for them gave the whole thing a funereal ambience.

And Lai? Terrible was his anger at the public display of spite and grievance. His ire towered to the skies and came crashing down on his associates who had the unenviable task of trying to pour water to douse the flames of intra-party conflict that only blazed brighter after the episode. The rebellion against what many perceive as Lai’s high handedness seems to be well and truly afoot.

Even the state chairman of the party Hon. Bashir Omolaja Bolarinwa and his wife merely paid him surface courtesy on the matter: they arrived very late just as the event was wrapping up. They were not the only ones. The list of those who failed to show up at all, some throwing flippant excuses into the bargain. This is despite the invitation letters being dispatched a month before the event.

The genesis of the disaffection with the man known to be a close associate of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is a knot with many tangles but one important thread is the rumour he has been picked to return as the sole minister from Kwara in the next dispensation. This development didn’t go down well with party stalwarts, many of whom still regard him as an usurper who rode on the backs of the powers that be to assume the mantle of party leadership in the state.

Insiders revealed that Lai in a bid to spare himself the coming embarrassment frantically made calls and pleas to the APC leading lights in Kwara including the incoming governor AbdulRahman AbdulRasak. The latter allegedly promised to show up but did not honour that promise. 

Others like Arch Lola Ashiru, Senator Ajadi, Ajibola ,Yahaya Oloriegbe, Moshood Mustapha, Cook Gani Olododo, Yinka Aluko and others also left the minister high and dry with their absence. The show managed to go on, but it was just like a blockbuster movie that turned out to be a D-grade flick. No wonder the minister is angry.

In Nigeria, governments come and go, but each one outpaces the other in impunity, non-performance, corruption, and incompetence.  Before the administration of President Buhari, that of Goodluck Jonathan was knocked as the archetypal highhanded, clueless, corrupt and wasteful government. But before Jonathan’s reign, Obasanjo’s administration was pilloried as a corrupt and iron-fisted “regime”, and before that, the military administrations were adjudged the “portmanteau of all evils”.


I must say, most Nigerians still consider the military administrations as the “portmanteau of all evils”. And I assent this view.  

But lately, I chanced on some conversations with the pesky question:  “20 years of democracy, how well we have done?” For me, democracy is a rudimentary system of government, essentially for its freedoms, that cannot be bartered for any other system. But in the past 20 years, our practice of democracy has not resulted in improvements to infrastructure and general well-being. However, there is something to be said for the relative freedom enjoyed by citizens.

The Buhari administration came in the saddle with so much hope for citizens. The hope of better security; of a strong economy, of better welfare for citizens and of an end to corruption. But these hopes have taken flight like the summer birds.  

The administration has failed uninhibitedly in tackling insecurity.  This is, perhaps, the biggest failure of this government.
In April, Mohammed Adamu, inspector-general of police, disclosed that 1071 Nigerians have been killed and that 685 have been kidnapped since January. A few days ago, about 24 persons were killed in Katsina, the president’s state. The jagged appendages of insecurity have even stretched far to claw some traces of the first family with the kidnap of the district head of Daura, who is said to be an in-law of President Buhari.


Really, I found the response of Prof Ango Abdullahi, the chairman of Northern Elders Forum, to the presidency’s statement that the insecurity crushing Katsina in a feisty grip was a confirmation that the president is not partial to his own state on matters of security.

Abdullahi said: “They (presidency) should be concerned that the security failures are everywhere, including the hometown of the president.”

Even now, the killings are unabated. But there appears to be no plan or strategy to halt them, except for wishes and feeble promises. And after four years, the president still says, “I will fulfill my promise on addressing insecurity.” After four years?

Really, casting off every pretension and sentiment, what exactly has this administration achieved in four years? I find it hard to put my finger on any. The much vaunted Social Investment Programme for which N500 billion was budgeted has turned out to be a fatal fraud. According to Aisha Buhari, wife of the president, the “programme failed in the north.” So, if it failed in the north where exactly did it succeed?

Hear her: “...I don’t know where the social investment worked... I was expecting that the N500 billion to be utilised in different methods in the north for the aim to be achieved. I don’t know the method they used but most northern states did not get it.”

Ordinarily, the wife of the president’s allegations should spur some serious investigation into the spending of the programme. But I have little faith that this will happen. If corruption was democratised under Jonathan, it has been privatised under Buhari.

As a matter of fact, Mr. President’s failure in his first four years is making the administration he deracinated look good. It has been a full-term of comparing failures and of outpacing impunity, corruption, and incompetence.

Mr. President has another four years to show competence, sensitivity, integrity, and even-handedness, because, at the current pace of low-hanging failures, Nigerians may have better things to say about the administrations of Jonathan, Obasanjo and even Ibrahim Babangida than his own when the day is done.

I wait with measured optimism for "Next Level".

The Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, Afenifere, on Sunday criticized the Federal Government for announcing the establishment of nomadic radio, being perceived in some quarters as frequency for the Fulani.

Afenifere’s spokesperson, Yinka Odumakin, in an exclusive interview with DAILY POST, said the action was a danger signal to all Nigerians, starting from other nationalities in the North.

Two Veterinary Medicine students of the Michael Okpara university of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State, have died after drowning in a swimming pool during a party.
 
According to reports, the incident happened, last night, during a birthday party at Kenvilles hotel, Umuahia and the deceased have been identified as Johnson Ibe, a 300 level student, and Egwu David, a 100 level student.

Ondo State police arrest two boys who target secondary school girls for marathon sex

Two young men, Tunde Akinwumi, 20 and Tunde Akinboyewa, 25, have been arrested by the police in Ondo State, for allegedly raping an 18-year-old girl and a 14-year-old.
 
The suspects, who were said to be cult members and ex convicts, were said to have locked the victims inside a house where they were raped through the night. They were arrested following a tip-off in Ondo town. The suspects were said to have been traced to a house where they reportedly gang-raped the victims.
 
According to reports, the suspects normally visit nightclubs at weekends and make friends with underage girls there and invite them to their homes for the night. Once the victims get to their houses, they are prevented from leaving for days and not until all the five suspected gang members have raped them in turns.

Police charge man, 37, and woman, 34, over 'poison' deaths of two teenage boys, 13 and 14 in Sheffield

A 37-year-old man and a 34-year-old woman have been arrested and charged over 'poison' deaths of two teenage boys, 13 and 14 at a house in Sheffield on Friday morning 
 
In a statement released on Sunday, South Yorkshire police said the two people arrested from the house in Shiregreen have now been charged and will appear at Sheffield Magistrates Court tomorrow.
 
The boys, aged 13 and 14, died after they were taken to hospital, suspected to have been poisoned, on Friday morning. Four other children, aged 11, 10, three and seven months who cannot be named for legal reasons, were released from hospital on Saturday afternoon.
 
It was also reported that the children, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, were being cared for by social services.

Reports speculated that they had been poisoned, but detectives have not confirmed any circumstances on either that or the charges levied against the arrested parties. 
 
It was claimed the 13 and 14-year-old boys sent a message from a Nintendo Switch console to a friend saying they were 'feeling sick' at 7am – half an hour before police were called to their house.
 
A neighbour said the boys messaged their friend saying: 'We're not coming to school today because we're feeling sick.'
The children's mother also reportedly told friends her children were sick hours before her sons died.
 
According to Daily Mail, Police were called to the property in the Shiregreen area in the north of the city at around 7.30am on Friday. Up to 15 police cars, two riot vans and four ambulances descended on the home, while the air ambulance landed at a nearby primary school.
 
Superintendent Paul McCurry, of South Yorkshire Police, said they were alerted after an 'independent call for assistance'.
Tearful school children have been bringing brought flowers, balloons and teddy bears to the scene to pay their last respect to the victims.

On Tuesday, President Muhammadu Buharigave truck drivers 72 hours to vacate access roads to the port in Apapa, Lagos.[/size]


He also ordered the immediate removal of all trucks from the bridges and roads within Apapa and all adjoining streets leading to the area.


The order was meant to clear gridlock in the area referred to as the gateway to the nation’s economy. Although the area is known for heavy vehicular movement, articulated trucks have worsened the traffic congestion.



When TheCable visited on Saturday, trucks were still seen on Eko bridge, Ijora bridge, Apapa bridge and other roads that lead to the port.

Abayomi Olonisakin, chief of defence staff (CDS), says the prevailing insecurity across the country is threatening its existence.


Olonisakin was speaking on Saturday at the closing ceremony of the joint campaign planning course at the Defence Intelligence College in Abuja.
The CDS said the security challenges must be tackled through collective efforts.


Represented by Paul Ohemu, deputy director of training, Olonisakin lamented the gap in synergies among the security agencies in the country.
“The challenges we face today threaten the corporate existence of our dear nation,” said the CDS.


“Fighting these challenges is a collective effort and success hinges on sound planning and synergy.
“It is premised on this,that I am particularly delighted that the course, was organized and designed to address key gaps in joint operations undertaken by our Armed Forces.


“That the objectives of the course which among others included equipping the participants with the skills required for the integration of concepts in the planning stages of the campaigns were attained.


“It is not surprising to learn that the instructional periods provoked very fulfilling interaction among you participants on the best approaches to joint campaign planning.”


The college had trained about 30 participants selected across security agencies on the joint campaign planning course, which is aimed at tackling the security challenges facing the country.

Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, has noted that the protest against the Federal Government’s move to establish a radio station for Fulani herdsmen is a waste of time.

The group said that President Muhammadu Buhari will not listen to such protest.
It instead called on other ethnic nationalities in the country to establish their tribal radio stations for their people.

DAILY POST reported on Tuesday that the Federal Government had confirmed the acquisition of an Amplitude Modulation radio broadcast licence, to reach herdsmen across various locations in the country.


The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, stated this in Abuja during an interview with newsmen.
Adamu said that the establishment of the radio frequency, was to end the perennial farmers-herders crises across the country.

The Minister explained that the radio service would operate on frequency of 720KHz and would air in Fulani language.


MASSOB leader, Comrade Uchenna Madu in a brief statement said Buhari has further displayed his true colour as a real fundamentalist who upholds and promotes his tribal and religious interest as paramount.


MASSOB said Buhari’s actions will continue to open and reawaken the consciousness of the people of the Niger Delta, Middle Belt, Oduduwa and Igbo for them to rise in defence of their future existence.

He added, “The Yoruba, Ijaw, Igbo, Bini, Itshekiri, Idoma, Tiv, Igala, Hausa, Middle Beltans and Niger Delta ethnic nationalities should immediately establish their tribal radio broadcasting services for their people.


“No oppressor or religious fundamentalist will ever listen to voice of reasoning or consider the people’s protests.”

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has denied recent media reports that claimed that it granted radio license to herdsmen.

However, NBC said that the National Commission for Nomadic Education duly applied for broadcast license in furtherance of its objectives to develop and maintain nomadic education outreach programmes.


DAILY POST reported that the Federal Government, during passing week confirmed the acquisition of an Amplitude Modulation radio broadcast licence, to reach herdsmen across various locations in the country.

However, the NBC in a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday by an assistant director in the commission, Ekanem Antia, said all broadcasting stations must exercise restraint in the treatment of sensitive issues that could threaten the unity and stability of Nigeria.
The statement added, “The Commission is reacting to the media controversy over the license granted to the National Commission for Nomadic Education for the establishment of a radio station to operate on the AM band.


“The National Commission for Nomadic Education duly applied for Broadcast license in furtherance of its objectives to develop and maintain nomadic education outreach programmes, including electronically mediated ones.

“The letter of provisional approval dated September 28th, 2018, was issued to the National Commission for Nomadic Education. The duration of the license is from October 8th, 2018 to October 8th, 2023.


“The station’s programmes, which shall be purely educational, are designed to cater for the interest of migrant fishermen, herders, hunters, farmers, and migrants. Consequently, it is a misrepresentation for any person, or organization to imply that the licensed station was just for a particular group.


“Similar educational broadcast licences were issued to institutions of higher learning and other governmental institutions with comparable needs, such as the Armed Forces of Nigeria, the Federal Road Safety Commission, and related institutions.

“Specifically, the Commission enjoins broadcasting stations to take special note of the following provisions of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code, which emphasize peace and national integration.


“While upholding professionalism and observing global best practices, stations are further advised to treat potentially divisive issues with tact and sensitivity,” the NBC said

Police in Anambra State has arrested a serving Nigerian soldier and three others in military uniforms for allegedly kidnapping a young man in Ekwulobia, Aguata Local Government Area.

The soldier, L/Cpl Ojiegbe Obinna according to the Police is serving at 101 Special Forces Battalion, Nigerian Army, Maiduguri, Borno State.
He and other two, Obasi Peter and Benjamin Nicholas were said to have abducted one Uchenna Ezeonu of Omeke village, Ekwulobia and whisked him away to an unknown destination.

DAILY POST gathered that the suspects were arrested in a bush along Uyo-Eke market road by policemen attached to Operation Puff Adder in conjunction with Joint Patrol teams.


Confirming the arrest, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Haruna Mohammed (SP) said their victim, Ezeonu was rescued unhurt.


The Police spokesperson said, “There was a distress call along Isuofia road in Aguata LGA of Anambra State on the 24/05/2019 at about 11:am, that three persons in Military uniforms abducted around Ekwulobia Roundabout one Uchenna Ezeonu ‘m’ of Omeke village Ekwulobia and whisked him away to an unknown destination.

“So following the distress call, Police Operatives attached to operation Puff Adder in conjunction with Joint Patrol teams rushed to the scene and cordoned off the entire area in search of the hoodlums along the bush path by Uyo-Eke market road.


“Consequently, three suspects in military attires who abducted the victim were rounded up and arrested inside the bush and they are: Ojiegbe Obinna ‘m’ (in full Military Uniform), Obasi Peter ‘m’ and Benjamin Nicholas ‘m’ (all in Military vests) and, Okoye Ugochukwu ‘m’.”


Mohammed further said that “Preliminary investigation revealed that one of the suspects, L/Cpl Ojiegbe Obinna serves with the Nigerian Army and deployed to 101 Special Forces Battalion, Maiduguri, Borno State.”

He added that L/Cpl Ojiedbe has been handed over to Onitsha Military Cantonment for discreet investigation while the remaining two suspects in Military vest were discovered to be fake soldiers.


The PPRO said the case was under investigation in order to ascertain the motive of the suspects after which they would be brought to Justice.

Nigerian music star, Yemi Alade, has said that she still finds it difficult to understand why the public pitches Tiwa Savage and herself against each other.

The ‘Johnny’ crooner, had in an earlier interview rated herself equal to Tiwa Savage, Wizkid, Davido, Olamide and other A’list music acts.


In an interview with ShowTime TV, Miss Alade also rubbished claims that Tiwa had penetrated the African music scene more than she has.

According to him, his subjects were spoiling for a showdown following the herdsmen’s invasion of the palace and subsequent harassment.
The traditional ruler noted that the incident was reported to the Chairman Akoko NorthWest Local Government Area, Samson Akande as well as fellow traditional rulers in the area.

According to him, the timely intervention of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu who deployed his Special Assistant on Security Matters, Alhaji Jimoh Dojumo, to douse the tension saved the tensed situation.

Dojumo at the meeting said carrying of arms and ammunition are prohibited while grazing in any part of the state.

Also, he said grazing between 6 am and 6 pm in the state is prohibited while no under-aged children should graze in the state.

Dojumo urged herdsmen to live with their host communities peacefully, assuring them that the governor would soon invite all the stakeholders for talks in a bid to find lasting solutions to the incessant clashes.

Buhari, who rode to power on the mantra of ‘change’, promised a radical departure from the past, having made three unsuccessful attempts.

Although his teeming supporters have argued that his tenure was renewed because he had fulfilled previous campaign pledges, his critics have continued to question his record in government and his ability to deliver on fresh promises of taking Nigeria to ‘the next level.’ His supporters are quick to point to Buhari’s successes in the three cardinal areas that formed his campaign thrust in 2015. For instance, they are quick to cite improvement in security in the North-East. 

Reference is also made to the effect that under Buhari’s watch, the Nigerian military retook territories from Boko Haram militants that had been fighting to overthrow the government and create an Islamic state. Similarly, scores of schoolgirls that were part of a group of nearly 300 abducted by the militants were also reunited with their families, even though many of the Chibok girls remain missing, including Leah Sharibu, who recently turned 16 years from Boko Haram captivity.

On the economy, the president is believed to have diversified the economy by boosting investment in agriculture and infrastructure projects. This is in addition to overseeing a rise in oil production in the South. He is also given some credit for eventually bringing the economy out of recession. But as he assumes the mantle of leadership for his second and last tenure as president, expectations are high, even as analysts believe that Buhari has the last opportunity of writing his name in gold as civilian president. 

Not a few Nigerians believe there is a carryover of challenges from his first tenure, which he needs to redouble his efforts in addressing. One of them is security challenge, which finds expression in the Boko Haram insurgency in the North-East, kidnapping, armed banditry, as well as the farmer/herder crisis. Even though the Boko Haram insurgency seems to have been significantly degraded and now confined to the North-East, the attacks have not completely ended. 

The humanitarian crisis arising from the insurgency has also given rise to rising cases of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the North-East region. Analysts believe the president has a duty to provide an environment that is conducive for the teeming IDPs to return to their homes. Another security challenge Buhari would confront in his second term is the rising spate of kidnappings, as well as armed banditry.

The Inspector- General of Police Mohammad Adamu recently said about 1,071 persons had died in crime-related incidents across the country in just four months (January to April this year). The IGP, who spoke at the quarterly Northern Traditional Ruler’s Council meeting in Kaduna, said crime statistics indicated that no fewer than 685 persons were kidnapped across the country with the North-West recording 436 cases of death, the highest in the country. 

He said the North-Central recorded 250 deaths while the South-South had130 cases. He said the data showed that Zamfara State recorded 203 murder incidents, topping the national prevalence scale, followed by Kaduna State with 112 reported cases; while Benue State recorded 90 cases. 

On incidents of kidnapping, IGP said 546 or 79.8 per cent of the national total were recorded in the three northern geopolitical zones, with the highest zonal prevalence occurring in the North-West, where 365 persons were reportedly kidnapped within the period. “This is followed by the North-Central geo-political zone, where 145 persons were kidnapped. 

“It is pertinent to mention that Zamfara State has the highest national kidnap rate of 281 victims in what has been directly linked to activities of armed bandits in the state. This is followed by Kogi State with 65, while in Niger State, 51 persons were kidnapped within the period,” he said. One of the victims of kidnapping was the chairman of the Governing Council of the Universal Basic Education Commission, Dr. Muhammad Abubakar, who was abducted along with his daughter on the Abuja-Kaduna expressway by gunmen on April 29. 

His driver was shot dead in the process. He was subsequently released after a huge ransom was allegedly paid. Another high profile case of kidnapping that left Nigerians bewildered was that of President Buhari’s son in-law, Alhaji Musa Umar Uba, a senior traditional title holder in Daura Emirate Council in Katsina State.

He is still held captive, thereby posing a big challenge to President Buhari in addressing this and other security challenges in his second tenure. On the anti-corruption war, the Buhari government has secured some convictions, prominent among which are those of two ex-governors: Jolly Nyame (Taraba) and Joshua Dariye (Plateau). The convictions of the two ex-governors, according to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC), were among a total of 139 convictions it secured between January and June 2018. 

However, the credibility of Buhari’s anti-corruption war during his first tenure has been called to question by the perception that it was lopsided, targeting mainly non-APC members. Critics said that for his fight against corruption war to bear the toga of credibility, it must be less selective during his second tenure. On the economic front, the contentious issue of fuel subsidy had been on over a period of time.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) recently advised Nigeria and other countries still subsidizing fuel for domestic consumption to stop doing so, saying subsidy removal would help boost revenue and improve on local infrastructure development. With Buhari holding forte as Minister of Petroleum Resources, experts believe he has a duty to come up with a clear cut policy on oil subsidy regime, which gulps over N1trillion annually. 

There is also the challenge of unemployment in the country, as well as rising poverty. It was revealed in June 2018 that Nigeria had overtaken India as the nation with the highest number of people living in extreme poverty across the world, with an estimated 86.9 million people measured to be living on less than $1.25 (N381.25) a day. 

This much was contained in findings by the Brookings Institution, a nonprofit public policy organisation based in Washington, DC, America. Although the Federal Government had dismissed the Brookings report, many analysts have linked rising cases of crime in Nigeria to unemployment and tasked President Buhari to prioritise job creation in his second term. 

With these challenges, Nigerians are anxiously awaiting the formation of President Buhari’s new cabinet as he assumes office for his second term. Many analysts believe the quality of those on his cabinet would either make or mar his ‘Next Level’ pact with Nigerians.

Why does Asiwaju Bola Tinubu want to learn from a mistake instead of learning from history? History does not repeat itself. Men repeat history and that is a mistake. How can Tinubu be so naive to expect that even if the All Progressives Congress gives him its ticket in 2023 (possible, but iffy) that Northerners will leave prominent Northerners in the Peoples Democratic Party, like Atiku Abubakar, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Aminu Tambuwal and Sule Lamido to vote for him?

If Tinubu thinks that what happened to the late chief MKO Abiola will happen to him, then he is allowing hubris blind his judgment.
I recommend to him the biography of Shehu Musa Yar’adua, titled ‘A Life of Service’, and written by Miss Jacqueline Farris.

In that book, he will read that the late Chief MKO Abiola was a political sacrifice by the Northern political elite of the Social Democratic Party, led by the late Tafida of Katsina (Shehu Musa Yar’adua) who knew beforehand (from intuition, not conspiracy) that General Babangida was going to annul the June 12, 1993 elections and only decided to support Chief MKO Abiola so that they could use Babangida to destroy Abiola and use Abiola to destroy Babangida, leaving the coast clear for them.

As a matter of fact, when prominent politicians asked Shehu Yar’adua why he was supporting Chief Abiola, he responded by saying that if he supported a Northerner, the Northerner would win, but Babangida would annul the election and the North would accept it because they were both Northerners. But if he supported a Southerner, like Abiola, when Babangida annulled the election, the South would rise up against him and he (Shehu Yar’adua) and his movement, will support the South and in one fell swoop, they will be rid of both Babangida and Abiola.

Let us face the truth, the North is by far more politically sophisticated than the South of Nigeria. Only one Southerner, to my knowledge, has been able to outflank the North, and that is former President Olusegun Obasanjo. Bola Tinubu does not have what it takes. He is being led by the nose, hopefully, not to his doom, but to his disgrace.

Recently, Nasir El-Rufai was in Lagos at the behest of the Bridge Club, which put up a hastily arranged, and probably custom-designed occasion tagged, “An evening with His Excellency Mallam Nasir El-Rufai.
It was a moment where El-Rufai delivered the general thinking of the Northern elite as regards Bola Tinubu.
At that event, El-Rufai, who had once knelt down for Tinubu, flippantly remarked “Godfatherism. This is Lagos. Let me tell you something sir; you know, Kaduna State used to be like that. There were three or four politicians in Kaduna that you could not become anything unless you had them on your side. Those were the godfathers of Kaduna politics and you had to carry them along and you know, the three words, ‘carry them along’ mean paying them regularly. “But we chose a different path and the long and short of it now is that after this election in 2019, we have retired all of them; we had to.”
Mr. El-Rufai then went on to give Lagosians tutorials on how to defeat their own ‘godfather’

Defeat, is what the North has planned for Bola Tinubu!
And the problem with Bola Tinubu is that, unlike Obasanjo, he is a coward. The North knows that they have finished using Tinubu. After Buhari’s re-election, they see him as being as useful as a used sanitary pad. In their eye, he is only as relevant as the ‘p’ in psychology. They also know that he is too cowardly to stand up to them and so they are toying with him and disrobing him before his own people. They intend the complete and total demystification of the bullion van-loving lion of Bourdillon.

The drama between El-Rufai and Bola Tinubu just serves to expose the servile and bootlicking nature of Bola Tinubu. It is almost like an episode of Game of Thrones. In this episode, Nasir El-Rufai insulted Bola Tinubu. But rather than face his SLAVE MASTER, who insulted him, Bola Tinubu rather PROJECTED his anger in an UNPROVOKED attack on the Peoples Democratic Party, calling them all sorts of names.

This is what they call TRANSFERENCE in psychology, where a PSYCHOLOGICAL PATIENT transfers his aggression on another person because he is too COWARDLY to face the real object of his anger!
I urge the leaders of the Southwest to look at the man who parades himself as their leader. Surely, they cannot trust the fate of 40 million Yoruba to such an anodyne creature!

A man that can be insulted so irreverently by Nasir El-Rufai and just takes it. Say what you will about Olusegun Obasanjo, but this could never have happened to him.
Bola Tinubu once said this about Obasanjo in a March 25, 2012 interview with Vanguard newspapers:
“If you underestimate Obasanjo, it is at your own peril because he has the character, strategy and will to destabilize you and you are gone to the bush, you are gone to the rubble. Very deceitful.”
The above assessment is very correct. This is the type of leader the Southwest needs to plot their political ascendancy post 2019, not a servile bootlicker that can be toyed with by Nasir El-Rufai. Not at all.

Bola Tinubu is nothing but a Quisling. He is not fit to stand beside Olusegun Obasanjo, perhaps the greatest leader to have come out of Africa. It is just a pity, that it is the North that knows this man’s worth more than the South and more than his own people.
But in an attempt to make them appreciate the blessing that God gave them, let me just talk a little about Obasanjo.

Before Olusegun Obasanjo became Nigeria’s military head of state in 1976, Nigeria had had four previous leaders. They were Prime Minister Abubakar Tarawa Balewa, Major General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi, General Yakubu Gowon and General Murtala Mohammed.

Of the four, three were murdered. The one who was not murdered (Yakubu Gowon), was overthrown.
Olusegun Obasanjo is the first Nigerian leader to have had a natural tenure uninterrupted by coups, death or tragedy. Think about that.
And then between 1979, when he handed power to President Shehu Shagari, and 1999, when he returned as a democratically elected President, Nigeria had six leaders.
They are the late President Shehu Shagari, Major General Muhammadu Buhari, General Ibrahim Babangida, Chief Ernest Shonekan, General Sani Abacha and General Abdulsalami Abubakar.

Of these six leaders, four of them were removed either by a coup, civil unrest or with a gun pointed to their head. One of them died as a victim of a conspiracy whose plotters we still do not know. And the last one, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, hurriedly hashed over before the fate of his predecessors befell him.
Olusegun Obasanjo, who returned as a democratically elected President on May 29, 1999, is the second Nigerian leader to have a natural tenure, uninterrupted by coups, death or tragedy. Think about that again.

He is the author of six books. Is an intellectual. Is able to speak truth to power and go to prison for doing so.
This man was so courageous that when he was informed in Copenhagen by then US ambassador to Nigeria, Walter Carrington, that General Sani Abacha would arrest him if he returned home, he chose to return home. This is even where he had been offered asylum by the West.

But let us come back to reality. Let us face the present. All over Nigeria, and also in the Southwest, herdsmen of Fulani heritage have been killing Nigerians without the Buhari administration doing anything tangible to stop them or bring them to justice.

Almost everyone has been afraid to speak up and hold the Buhari government to account. That is until Obasanjo spoke on the matter on May 19, 2019 when he slammed the Buhari administration and said that the herdsmen and Boko Haram killings are “no longer an issue of lack of education and lack of employment for our youths in Nigeria which it began as, it is now West African fulanization, African Islamization”.

Four days later, Nobel laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, put aside his well-known animus for former President Olusegun Obasanjo, to agree with him on his comments on herdsmen and Boko Haram and their Islamisation agenda, and condemned the Buhari government.
That took courage! The type of courage that Bola Tinubu, sadly, does not have. What is Tinubu doing as herdsmen kill his people? He is licking the boots of the Grand Patron. Igbo man say tufiakwa!

The National Broadcasting Commission has said the proposed Fulani radio station will broadcast “purely educational,” programmes designed to cater for the interest of itinerant fishermen, herders, hunters and farmers.

It also called on all broadcasting stations to exercise restraint in the treatment of sensitive issues that could threaten the unity and stability of Nigeria.

The commission, in response to criticism of the planned radio station by Federal Government to reach Fulani herdsmen, urged broadcasting stations to be professional and take guidance from the Nigeria Broadcasting Code, at all times.

The NBC, in a statement on Saturday, reminded all broadcasters to be mindful of their social responsibility to promote the well-being and peaceful co-existence of the various groups in Nigeria in keeping with the objectives of broadcasting in Nigeria.

It stated, “The commission is reacting to the media controversy over the license granted to the National Commission for Nomadic Education for the establishment of a radio station to operate on the AM band.

“The National Commission for Nomadic Education duly applied for broadcast license in furtherance of its objectives to develop and maintain nomadic education outreach programmes, including electronically mediated ones.

“The letter of provisional approval dated September 28, 2018, was issued to the National Commission for Nomadic Education. The duration of the license is from October 8, 2018 to October 8, 2023.”

The NBC noted that the station’s programmes, which it describes as “purely educational,” were designed to cater for the interest of migrant fishermen, herders, hunters, farmers, and migrants.

It added, “Consequently, it is a misrepresentation for any person or organisation to imply that the licensed station was just for a particular group.

“The commission wishes to state that similar educational broadcast licences were issued to institutions of higher learning and other governmental institutions with comparable needs, such as the Armed Forces of Nigeria, the Federal Road safety Commission, and related institutions.

Court orders INEC not to issue certificate of returns to Governor Rochas Okorocha

The battle to stop the Imo Governor Rochas Okorocha from going to the Senate took another dimension on Saturday as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was ordered not to issue a Certificate of Return to him as a senator-elect for Imo West.  
 
The order was made by a High Court sitting in Owerri. The court, in a suit filed by Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Senatorial candidate for Imo West Hon Jones Onyeriri against the INEC, ordered that the status quo be maintained until the hearing and determination of the Motion on Notice.  
 
The presiding judge, Justice E.F. Njemanze, adjourned the case till June 5 2019, for hearing.

RHAPSODY OF REALITIES

SUNDAY, 26TH MAY.


WE LIVE IN THE VICTORY OF CHRIST

But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 15:57).


In Christianity, we pose a solid front! We don’t chicken out; we don’t live in fear; we’re bold and strong, irrespective of the troubles or adversities we face. We maintain our faith-filled confessions. We’re confident about life; confident that come what may, we’re more than conquerors.

There’re those who say, “Well, you don’t know what life will bring forth; you never can tell what’s going to happen tomorrow.” That’s not us; we don’t talk like that! We know what will happen tomorrow:
tomorrow, we’ll win; we’ll still be shouting, dancing, and rejoicing in victory. Why? It’s because the script has been written: all things work together for good, to them that love God (Romans 8:28). Our light afflictions produce for us a far more exceeding, and eternal weight of glory (2 Corinthians 4:17). We triumph always in all things and in every place (2 Corinthians 2:14). Hallelujah!

The “Script,” the Word by which we live, says we’re victors forever, come rain, come shine, and we’re simply acting it out. Part of that script says in Romans 8:35, “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?” After considering all these things, the Spirit’s conclusion, who is the “Scriptwriter,” is that we’re more than conquerors.

In Isaiah 54:16-17, again, the “Scriptwriter” wrote, “Behold, I have created the smith that bloweth the coals in the fire, and that bringeth forth an instrument for his work; and I have created the waster to destroy. No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD.” What a word! If this doesn’t give anyone the confidence to face life and win, then nothing will.

You’re invincible. Your life is for the glory of God. Nothing in this world can defeat you or put you under as long as you live in the victory of Christ. There’s nothing to struggle with or try to overcome, because you have triumphed already with, and in Christ. Don’t allow the circumstances of life try to make you think otherwise.

CONFESSION

I walk in the reality of all that’s written about me in the Scriptures. The Lord is my Rock and my Strength, He’s the glory of my life. In Him, I’ve overcome the world. I’m walking in the victory of Christ. I win every day, reigning in life through Christ Jesus. I make progress. I walk in peace with prosperity. I’m healthy, vibrant and strong. Glory to God!

  Access Bank To Publish Names Of Debtors

Access Bank Plc is set to publish the list of all its delinquent debtors, associated persons, directors and entities. This is in line with the directive from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

All Access Bank Plc (including former Diamond Bank Plc) debtors are directed to pay up their past due obligations in order to avoid punitive actions being taken against them. The management of the Bank noted that it shall publish its debtors’ names in newspapers in two weeks.

Similarly, in the event that these obligations are not fulfilled, the bank shall take such further actions against such delinquent individuals and companies as it may consider necessary and shall relentlessly pursue full recovery of all its debts. For incorrigible debtors, who continue to pose a risk to the bank’s system, AccessBank will use all means available and collaborate with colleagues in the industry to ensure that they are excommunicated from the banking system.

Furthermore, all debtors will be sanctioned by the CBN and banned from participating in the Nigerian Foreign Exchange and Securities Exchange Markets and registered on the Credit Risk Management Systems (CRMS) Bureau as bad debtors making them, their directors and related entities illegible for any credit in the Nigerian Financial Markets.

Consequently, Access Bank hereby advise all delinquent debtors to take this publication seriously and ensure that all their debts are settled promptly.

  FG Approves $2.3b For Coastal Rail Line Development.

The Federal Government has approved the sum of $2.3bn for the development of a coastal rail line that will run through coastal states in the country.

It was gathered that of the sum, $1.8bn would come as a loan from China, while the Federal Government would provide $500m as counterpart fund.

The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, who disclosed this during his valedictory press conference in Abuja on Thursday, explained that the rail line would transverse Lagos, Delta, Anambra, Benin, Rivers and Cross River states, with connections to the central rail line that goes to Abuja.

He said, “The government has approved for us to seek a loan of $1.8bn to start work on the coastal rail. The coastal rail is from Lagos to Calabar. So we are taking the segment that starts from Port Harcourt to Warri to join the central line that goes to Abuja.

“And then another segment that starts from Benin to Onitsha. But as it is going to Onitsha, it will join the central line again at Agbor. The Port Harcourt-Warri line will join the central line at Warri. The Benin-Onitsha line will join the central line at Agbor. They are all part of the coastal rail line, which is about $11.1bn.”


He said, “There are other projects that are considered for construction. The one that we just got approval for from the cabinet is the central line, which begins from Abuja through Baruo, Itakpe and Lokoja; that has been approved. With a seaport to Warri approved.

Amaechi continued, “The Federal Government will give a sovereign guarantee to enable them to get a quick loan. In turn, the contractor will give us a performance guarantee. The performance guarantee means that since you have concessioned this project to me after the completion, I will run the seaport and the rail line in such a way that I will pay back in 20, 30 or 40 years time, depending on the agreement reached.

Then a final twist: it turned out the houseboy was actually her husband’s son, born out of wedlock while he was a randy youth. This family calamity with the accompanying incest and murder was spawned by too many secrets between husband and wife.

Strange and improbable it may sound, this is actually a true-life story, a revelation that came straight from the horse’s mouth from the main protagonist herself the nine-month pregnant wife, Rebecca Bako, who prodded by guilty conscience on her own volition knocked on the door of a minister on May 20, 2019, to narrate the travails of her matrimony.

Rebecca Bako, arriving at the minister’s house by 8 am at first sat quietly on the bench outside. Few minutes later, she was sharing her story with the pastor in the presence of Saturday Sun correspondent.

It was a bizarre, complex, mind-numbing story of 12 years of fruitless marriage, with what would have been the climax the birth of the nine-month pregnancy becoming an anticlimax.

What was Rebecca’s purpose for involving the pastor? To make a confession, seek God’s forgiveness and plead with the pastor to talk to her husband to forgive her, she clarified.

In an emotion-laden voice, the beleaguered housewife recounted how a perfect marriage gradually turned sour due to barrenness. Her narrative highlighted the aggravating factors, such as a toxic mother-in-law who harangued her endlessly, her husband’s lackadaisical attitude to their childlessness, her own fear of impending menopause and the bad advice of Rose, her childhood friend.


A marriage doomed by childlessness

Before she began her story proper, Rebecca Bako spent two minutes wiping her tears.

She started with a recollection of the sunny days. “He was my best friend before we got married. We had a beautiful wedding. Our honeymoon was fun. We were ready to have children as quickly as possible so we could move on.”


As with most marriage, barrenness begets misery.

“After 12 years, I didn’t conceive, I became apprehensive because I was not young any longer and I was nearing menopause. My mother-in-law was even more desperate. She pressured her son to take another wife. I understood her position. My childhood friend, Rose, who is married in Makurdi, advised us to adopt a child, but my husband wouldn’t buy the idea.

“My mother-in-law later came to live with us in the house and she became my nightmare. She made life a living hell for me, to the extent that I contemplated suicide countless times because she insulted me and claimed that I charmed her son who is the only son in the family.”


A friend’s sinful counsel

At her wit’s end, she turned to friends for advice.

“At a point, I had to share my experience with my friend, Rose, who confessed to me that she once faced a similar problem. She suggested that perhaps my husband might have been the source of the problem all these years. Her advice to me was to find a younger lover and try having sex with him to see whether it would work. According to her, that was how she gave birth to her three children. When she discovered that her husband was finding it difficult to impregnate her after more than two years of marriage, she devised a means of bearing children for him by having an affair outside, and it had worked perfectly for her, that had been the secret to her 10 years of a successful marriage.”

Rebecca recounted her friend’s advice to her: “Go for a guy who is not yet married, who is strong enough to give you the best of sexual satisfaction any time an opportunity presents itself, whether in the night or daytime. An unmarried man can easily walk away without accepting responsibility since he will equally get married someday to raise his own family, so there won’t be complications of laying claims to the child, but do not let the guy know that he is responsible.”

She at first found such advice impracticable. “I had never cheated on my husband before,” Rebecca said. “But I was equally considering my age too just a year away from menopause. For several weeks, I thought over it. I didn’t understand how I would submit my private part to a man other than my own husband; I didn’t know how to find a man who would sleep with me, get me pregnant, and then just walk away.”

Unfortunately, she had, at the time, reached the limit of her endurance, and the circumstance around her was not in her favour. “I’d prayed to God for a way out, but I didn’t get any immediate solution; worse still, I was conscious of my fast-approaching menopause. I concluded that if I did not act fast, I risked losing my marriage once I reach menopause the following year because my mother-in-law was not ready to take chances. She had taken the matter seriously that I must give way for her son to marry another wife who can bear her grandchildren.”


Seducing the houseboy

Bako decided to take her chances after giving the issue a lengthy contemplation.

“I concluded that it is better I sleep with our houseboy, Kenneth, who is 21 years old. I had seen his crotch whenever he wore his boxer to keep the house clean. I realised that his manhood was long and sizeable enough to perform such functions. My husband had brought Kenneth from his village to live with us. He had just finished his secondary school and was preparing to go to university. I started admiring him anytime my husband went to work. 

I summoned the courage and made advances, wooing him with gifts like new trousers and shirts, takeaway food and other attractive items. In no time, he succumbed to me and we started having sex. I warned him never to reveal it and threatened to kill him if tries it. He was not too perfect in bed because of his age, but he was strong enough to give me sexual satisfaction because it takes him longer to release. We progressed in that direction and it became regular.

“After two months of this, I missed my period and the result was pregnancy. I was very happy and informed my friend, Rose that her advice has worked; what my husband could not do for 12 years, Kenneth has done it in less than three months.”


Another diabolical advice

After about four months, Rebecca’s friend, Rose sold her another terrible suggestion. She asked her to eliminate the houseboy who impregnated her. Her reason: He might one day reveal the secret and try to claim the child, thereby bringing shame and embarrassment to the couple.

“Something held me back because he was innocent and did not offend me,” she claimed. “After all, I lured him into having an affair with me against his wish.”

She continued: “But Rose continued to pester me, pointing out the dangers to me. Eventually, I had mixed Sniper (a deadly insecticide), otapiapa and rat killer with his food. I kept the meal for him and went to the hospital for medical checkup. Before my return, he had eaten the poisoned food and later died of stomach pain after four hours in the hospital.”

She cleverly managed the aftermath by convincing her husband the houseboy’s death could be due to spiritual attacks from the village. One week after his death, the body of the 21-year-old was buried, in December 2018.

“I was sad after his death. I regretted taking such action. I prayed to God to forgive all my sins and I distanced myself from Rose––I stopped picking her calls.”

While the death of the houseboy has eliminated the possible risk of future embarrassment, all she got was cold comfort.

“I notice that my husband was sad and affected by Kenneth’s untimely death. He was affected psychologically so much so it almost cost him his job at the bank. He ceased to be a happy man, even with my pregnancy. I tried severally to discuss with him about the future of my unborn baby, but it never interests him, at the time, I was in the fifth month of my pregnancy. Even though the test shows that we are expecting a baby boy, the man was still not happy at all.”


Then comes the dark secret

Three months later, early in the morning of April 30, 2019, her husband had abruptly woken her. She came awake to find him in a disturbed and depressed state. The man broke down, crying uncontrollably, unable to tell his wife the cause of his misery.

After a 30-minute cry jag, he was calm enough to tell her why he was crying.


He narrated a terrible and shocking story.

Rebecca recalled: “He started by apologising to me for not being fair to me by hiding from me what he ought to have told me from the first day of our marriage 13 years ago. I was confused. What fairness is he talking about? I became curious. Could it be that I am not the only one hiding secrets in this marriage?”


She recalled verbatim what her husband told her.

“He said: “While growing up many years ago, I lived a very rough life. I contracted a Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) and was too ashamed to go to the hospital to treat it, but opted for a local treatment, which was not working. Later I had some medical complications, the untreated virus damaged my testicles and rendered me impotent forever. I didn’t know how to tell you all these years, but earlier before the infection, my girlfriend then in my diploma programme years back got pregnant for me, and refused to abort it, and that cost our relationship. But after three years, she brought a boy to my father. I wanted to reject it but my father accepted the boy and took responsibility while I proceeded to the university. It was the same girl that gave me the disease. She died a few years later as a result of the complications too.”

At this point, his wife had asked about the whereabouts of the boy and how he was faring. Her husband’s reply confirmed her worst fear: “The boy is the late Kenneth who had lived with us as a houseboy. I didn’t want you to know his true identity. I was afraid you might maltreat him or even kill him as most women do to children who are born into their matrimonial homes from another woman. I wanted to protect him since I wasn’t going to be able to get a woman pregnant in my lifetime again.”

The embattled husband once again burst into tears. The couple then came to the knotty part of their matrimonial misfortune when the husband dropped the next bombshell: “ I knew all these while that the baby in your womb is not my own, but I was too ashamed to confront you; now that everything has come to the open, please tell me, who is the father of our unborn child?”

This was how Rebecca found herself in a classic catch-22 situation. At that point, it was clear lies would further complicate the situation.


She decided to come clean, she claimed.

“I burst into tears and cried uncontrollably. I found it difficult to explain to him. Since he had been plain with me, I knelt before him in tears and confessed to him that the late Kenneth was the father of my unborn baby boy and that I was also responsible for his death. I pleaded with him to forgive me of all my sins, that I took that course of action to protect the marriage, and the consolation is that the new baby boy will replace his late son.”

According to Rebecca, her husband’s mien had briefly reflected anger when he learnt about the circumstances surrounding his son-houseboy death. He, however, appeared conciliatory, advising his wife to let go of the past.


Uncertain future

Since their mutual confessions three weeks ago, life has not been the same between the Bako couple. Deteriorating relation between them has put Rebecca on tenterhooks. 

“My husband has become a changed person completely,” she said. “He has emaciated, looking sorrowful nowadays. He hardly eats at home. He keeps late nights. As a banker, he gets home around 7 pm. Yet, he still goes out, which is very unusual of him. We hardly talk now. He hardly responds to my conversations. I am worried and even afraid to stay with him under the same roof. I suspect that he might also kill my son too when I delivered. His aloofness really worries me.”

On that note she concluded her story, bursting into tears again.

Pastor Joshua promised to meet with the husband by the weekend to hear his own side of the story before taking any decision.

Saturday Sun correspondent who was privy to the confession subsequently contacted Rebecca’s husband, who was hardly available due to the tight schedule of his job.

Daniel Bako was forthright in his response. “My brother, I am not myself. I am confused. I don’t deserve to be alive again. I am contemplating suicide. I wanted to give Kenneth the best education because he was my own blood, my only child in my entire life. I am yet to decide whether to be alive or not.”

On his wife, he is “confused about what to do with her.” He said: “It is not enough to kill my son in the name that she wants to protect the marriage. What marriage? What she did is an unforgiving crime, even if he (Kenneth) was not my son, it is wrong anywhere.”

It was a sober reflection on the premises of National Assembly complex Abuja on friday as lawmakers who lost elections in their various constituencies evacuated their personal belongings from their offices .

Some of the aides to the lawmakers were seeing removing property from their offices into the waiting trucks . Some of the items include: refrigerators, plasma TV, water dispensers, printers , portraits photographs, rugs, flags and many other things .

Many have stealthily and surreptitiously moved their luggage shortly after the election results were announced to avoid disgrace and embarrassment.
Some of the staff were seen in group discussing the inglorious exit of the senators and members of House of Representatives while others were making jest of them and gloating over their misfortune.

When Saharareporters prodded the staff to disclose the reason behind their excitement. Many of them described the exit of the lawmakers as lesson of life adding that power is transient . 

One of the staff who pleaded not to be named said many of them were so much intoxicated with power, while it lasted, in such a way that they saw themselves as tin-gods with the positions they occupied. 

He added that many of them did not deserve re-election judging by their hostile and aggressive treatment of Nigerians particularly those from their constituencies. 

He admonished the new lawmakers not to be carried away with the allure of power or trappings of public office but to put citizens who elected them into the position of authority first. 

Recall that many federal lawmakers including senate President, Bukola Saraki lost their seats during the Presidential and National Assembly election on 23rd February 2019.

  Peter Okoye To Sue His Brother And Angola Show Promoter (Photos)

Trouble is brewing within the Okoye family as Peter Psquare is set to sue his brother Paul Okoye – King Rudy for using his photo in a show in Angola.

The other half of the defunct music group, King Rudy, is billed to perform in Angola tomorrow and the show promoters used one of the old photos the duo took together, to promote the show.

While taking to Instagram, Peter otherwise known as Mr P mentioned that it is quite sad they needed his photo to sell their show.

He wrote:

President Muhammadu Buhari has arrived in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

Buhari’s presidential chopper NAF 540 touched down at Arcade Ground, State Secretariat, Oke-Mosan at about 10:30am.


Buhari will commission some projects executed by Governor Ibikunle Amosun.

It was gathered that the president held a private meeting with Amosun shortly after his arrival.


Part of the agenda was on how to resolve his suspension from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) over issues surrounding the 2019 governorship election in the state.


Amosun was sanctioned for backing Adekunle Abdulkabir Akinlade, the APM candidate.


However, APC governorship candidate, Prince Dapo Abiodun, eventually won.

Constitutional lawyer and human rights activist, Inibehe Effiong, has slammed Tanko Mohammad, the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, and other judicial officers for honouring a private dinner with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Villa on Thursday.

The Lagos-based lawyer said it was against the rule of the judiciary for the CJN and judicial officials to attend such gathering.


In series of tweets, Effiong noted that when the head of the judicial arm dines with a President who has a petition challenging his election before the courts, then something is not right.

He wrote, “Rule 1.4 states: The Judge must be sensitive to the need to avoid contacts that may lead people to speculate that there is a special relationship between him and someone whom the judge may be tempted to favour in some way in the course of his judicial duties.


“1.5 states: A judicial officer must avoid social relationships that are improper or may give rise to an appearance of impropriety or that may cast doubt on the ability of a judicial officer to decide cases impartially.”


“It is in Nigeria that intellectuals defend the madness and impropriety of politicians with so much Passion.


“When you have the head of the judicial arm, dining with a President who has publicly asserted his disdain for the rule of law, a President who has a petition challenging his election before the courts, at a time that the judiciary is plagued by a crisis of confidence, and you still come here and insult me over my harmless observation, is there hope for the future of Nigeria?”

In this interview, he spoke on why party leaders across the three senatorial zones are against Obaseki’s second term ambition. Excerpts…


The 2020 governorship election is fast approaching in Edo, and APC seems to have a divided house over Obaseki’s second term bid. What is your take?


The leaders of the APC made a fundamental mistake in 2015 when they brought a political neophyte, somebody who has never been in government, somebody who has never done anything tangible or worthwhile as governor. We made a mistake of electing somebody who had been rejected by his people, the most aloof governor we have ever had in Edo State. And I say this with all sense of responsibility and I have evidence to buttress every point I have made. You will recall that as a prelude to the 2016 elections, his cousin was actually the first person to alert the state that Godwin Enogheghase Obaseki is a funny human being. He told us about Obaseki’s personal and private life, which I don’t want to delve into, but because of our loyalty to our leader, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, we didn’t listen to him; we waved him off as the rantings of a disgruntled brother, but we now know better now.


What are the things you have noticed?


He has succeeded in alienating the party; he has succeeded in marginalising other members of the party under the bogus claim that he doesn’t have the resources to satisfy the private greed of party members. No party member wants the governor to give them money or dash them money. I ask the question; for the eight years that he was Chairman of the Economic Team under Oshiomhole, was he dashed money? Comrade is somebody that if he spends a thousand, he wants to get N2, 000 value from every thousand that he spent. But party members are entitled to patronages from government having worked assiduously to enthrone the government. Those who are contractors can be patronised in the area of the contract they specialised in, I am not a contractor, I have never done any contract and I don’t want no contract, but I should have access to my governor, a governor that I worked day and night for, a man who did not even know how we made him governor.


Did you just say he didn’t know how you made him governor?


There are so many things we did to make him governor that Obaseki didn’t know. So he should stop blackmailing the leadership of the party, because I will consider it cheap political blackmail to say that he does not have the financial resources to satisfy the greed of APC members, and because of that he has locked everybody out of government. It is cheap political blackmail.


What are you going to do now?


As 2020 approaches, some of us have decided to bell the cat, we have decided to face the challenges headlong because Obaseki believes that he is smart, and that all Edo people are dullards, that we don’t have intelligent people. That is why he brings in boys from Lagos, from Delta and then from his second state, Rivers. You know his second state is Rivers. Those are the people he brings to come and do all the jobs.


Do you have anything concrete to stop him in 2020?


All those funny seminars and workshops cost the tax payers of Edo State millions of naira. Obaseki is the only governor that spent N300million to write a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Edo State Government and Chinese company in respect of the Gele –Gele Sea port. And when some of the junior staff discovered errors in the MOU, another N100 million was spent in correcting errors in the MOU. So overall, he spent N400 million drafting an MOU and that is a man that is talking about greed of other people, a man who collects N6bn per annual, which is N500m every month as security vote. There is no day we don’t record one incident of murder, one incident of rape, one incident of kidnapping and sundry other crimes.

We stakeholders in the APC have realised that without our urgent intervention, the ship of the party in the state was heading for a very disastrous end. This was exemplified during the general elections; the Presidential and National Assembly polls, where the party lost woefully in Edo South and Edo Central. In fact, it is on record that Obaseki is the first sitting governor anywhere in Nigeria to lose his polling unit. He lost his ward, local government and his senatorial district even when the party had a very popular candidate in Patrick Obahiagbon.

That is a score card of failure, he has failed politically, and administratively he has failed and we are determined that in 2020, we will have a replacement for Obaseki, because the voice of the people is the voice of God. Before now, they use to call him ‘wake and see’ now it is ‘see and cry’ because on the 23rd of February, Edo State people came out and pushed the ‘Wake and See’ aside and voted their conscience.

If you speak to folks close to Obaseki, they will tell you that President Muhammadu Buhari is not popular and that because of religious reasons, that was why we lost the state, but that is not true; President Buhari enjoys nationwide popularity across the length and breadth of the country including Edo State. People voted against the party that day because of the greed, because of the stone-heartedness, because of the self-centeredness of the Obaseki administration.


Don’t you think that this crisis will give the opposition party an edge?


It will not, we know what we are doing, ours is a revival group, ours is a rescue mission, we are here to rescue the party from the clutches of a clueless man, he is clueless politically, he has no clue about how to run a political party, even about how to run a government he has no clue. So we are here to rescue the party from the hands of a clueless governor, especially in political matters. We know the extent to which we would fight, this is actually an in-house fight. As bad as he is, he is still our brother, he is a product of our party. So we know the extent to which we will fight that will not give away the state to the opposition party.


How do you hope to do that?


I believe we would resolve it during the primaries where he will be roundly defeated. He didn’t know how the last primary was organised and he won, those who were in charge of organising that primary that led to his victory, all of them are up in arms against him. During the next primaries he would lose very woefully and then we will bring a governor that will be popular, that will be acceptable, that will carry the people along, and will deliver solid dividend of democracy to our people, not a governor that will appropriate NDDC projects, appropriate SEEFOR project and claim to be state projects, even after amassing a whooping N100bn debt for the state.

A recent statistics from Nigeria Bureau of Statistics (NBS) will interest many Edo people; it shows that 25 per cent of employable youths in Edo State are unemployed, another 20 per cent are underemployed that is 25.1 per cent, so in all you have about 45.1 per cent of unemployed Edo youths in Edo. Any wonder then it is cult war almost on a daily basis in Edo State; of course the governor is unperturbed, but happy in the safety of his palatial mansion. The Nigeria Bureau of Statistics proceeded to tell us that after borrowing N100 billion, previous governments left a debt of N45 billion for Edo. Total indebtedness of Edo State today is N145 billion and that made Edo State the second most indebted state in Nigeria.

The first of course is Lagos, but Lagos can be indebted up to a trillion because Lagos has the capacity to pay through Internally Generated Revenue. But when you convert the debt to income ratio in Edo, it is 176 per cent, which means this state is doomed, children yet unborn will continue to pay the debts that Obaseki is accumulating for the state. What has he got to show? Every month he must fly to Indonesia and Singapore with his aides.


Oshiomhole seems to be fighting so many political wars, in Kogi, in Edo, in Bayelsa. Don’t you think he is chewing more that he can actually swallow?


Oshiomhole is not fighting any war, Oshiomhole is the National Chairman of the party APC, and the responsibility to manage and superintendent over the affairs of the party rests squarely on his shoulders, and he has a responsibility to deliver the state to the party. Firstly some of the statement credited to him in Kogi, he has denied that he ever made such statement. Don’t forget that Oshiomhole is a media delight any day any time, and unscrupulous elements capitalised on the social media to ascribe statement people never made to them. So he has come out to say he never made any statement about Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State. But be that as it may, if working hard to ensure the party wins in Bayelsa and Kogi State means Oshiomhole is fighting hard, so be it, but I can assure that the man is not fighting hard, the man knows what he is doing, and he has rejuvenated the party. But for his involvement in the party, I am sure the party would have gone into extinction. You saw a resurgence of the Peoples Democratic Party, under the leadership of the presidential candidacy of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, you saw even the gap between President Buhari’s vote and Atiku’s. If we had any person as the National Chairman of the APC, that gap would not have been there, the party would have lost and we would have been singing a different tune today. So APC should be grateful to the coming on board of Oshiomhole, we know he is a workaholic. Many of the people complaining about him are unable to work at his own pace. Oshiomhole doesn’t have any sense of time when he is working, 2am, midnight is still working time. So it is not correct that he is fighting so many battles, if he is fighting any battle at all, they are battles that must be fought, battles that we cannot run away from, but in the overall interest of the party nationwide.


Do you think Edo people will allow the Ambode treatment?


Let me tell you this, since the day Oshiomhole moved out of government, he has never interfered in the running of the government in Edo State. I say this with all sense of responsibility and because I have personal knowledge of it. There are some occasions and I have been there where people will approach him to speak to the governor on issues, the man will tell them; ‘look I’m no longer the governor, we have a new governor, we should allow him to govern’. Some of us didn’t like that approach, and we believe that the approach led this governor to become so arrogant and took the people and the party and the state like a conquered territory. So it is not true that Oshiomhole had been interfering, Oshiomhole had always believed that issues about governance should be for the governor, but Oshiomhole is the leader of the party. He was leader when he was governor, because he didn’t have in the party then a former governor but now we have a former governor, you cannot compare a governor with just two and half years in office with a veteran governor of eight years. When he was campaigning he told us that he was going to retire us. Do you retire politicians?

Once you are a politician you are always a politician, of course your degree of involvement varies. Now tell me; what is the offence of the politicians? Is it because they supported him? He knew nothing before he came in, we manufactured his APC card because he did not even have a party card. It was manufactured for him. He told us he was not interested in politics, he sold us a red herring, he wanted that office, but gave us the impression that he was not interested in it. And because of our loyalty to our leader, we fell head long into it, he got to the government house and locked out politicians, he said politicians were not welcomed. Government House is for politicians, because politicians catalyzed the process that produces an occupant of the government house. Imagine a governor requesting his commissioners to pass files through somebody who does not even have designation, may be his P.A. In fact one of his commissioners said he told them that he would make them poorer. I met another person who told me that they have over 50 special advisers t to the governor, about 20 of them are from the East, Lagos, Delta and Rivers and those ones have official cars, they have portfolio, they have offices.

The ones appointed from Edo who are politicians don’t have official cars, they don’t have designation and don’t have offices. Obaseki’s disregards the Benin people. Again I’m sure you know that two key members of Obaseki’s group have defected to PDP, These persons worked day and night to make Godwin Obaseki governor, today they are members of the PDP. So that is why I said we voted for a man we did not know. But I assure you that in 2020 we would determine who becomes governor. The battle is on, there is no retreat no surrender. We will tell him that we are politicians and that we have been in this business before him. If the current romance with the PDP big wigs will save him, we would be very happy. In fact we would seek the services of the best Benin musician to celebrate his exit from government house.

  • Rues N1.2 billion loss on West Coast inflicted by gang up


CHAIRMAN of Air Peace, Chief Allen Onyema has said it is premature for the airline to take a decision on cancelling its 737 Max 8 order stating that the airline still has time to decide


This is just as he insisted that there is a gang up against Nigerian airlines in the West African sub-region stating that the airline has lost N1.2 billion in the last year to operational cost of doing business in the region.


Onyema made this known on Wednesday when the airline Inaugurated its Board of Directors consisting of very notable and trust worthy Nigerians.


On the Boeing 737 Max 8 orders, Air Peace had made a record-breaking firm order of 10 aircraft in 2018 with the aircraft scheduled to start arriving in 2023. However, there are hues and cries after the aircraft crashed in October 2018 and March 2019.


Onyema while giving his thought on the Max said, ” The Max 8 is a good aircraft, revolutionary. Getting over 5000 orders in just a short while until the accident.


“People are going to ask about our orders of those aircraft at this event so let me just say so now and get it out-of-the-way. 


The Max is a good aircraft and despite what happened, it is premature for Air Peace to take the decision to cancel the Boeing 737 Max 8 order. It takes time to get those aircraft done and ours are supposed to start arriving 2023/2024, before that time we believe any issue with the aircraft would have been solved.

” We will wait to see the report of the investigation of the previous crashes so there is time to make those decisions,” he said.


He added that from 2020, the airline would start receiving its E195 regional jets from Embraer stating that the cargo hold which was small has been addressed.


Air Peace is the launch customer for the E195 in Africa and Southern Europe.
Chief Onyema who spoke on the unfortunate trend in the West African sub-region stated that government needs to get in the game to play aero-politics as the country is being over ridden.


He said that most countries protect gang up with their airlines to protect them against Nigeria, doing all they can with their government’s backing to frustrate Nigerian businesses out.


According to the airline Chairman, even the much touted Single African Air Transport Market ( SAATM) is geared towards fleecing the Nigeria market and stunting its aviation industry growth.


” Out there is a gang up against Nigerian airlines. The SAATMs geared towards fleecing Nigeria and nothing more. It is targeted at our market. Some of these countries have nothing to show, when they come to Nigeria, we give them the red carpet treatment and play big brother.


” When you go to their country, they want to run you out of business with charges. They charge taxes or inbound and out bound passengers. They charge exorbitant landing and parking charges, they provide stage-managed ground handling service providers that charge over US$5,000, for what? To run us out of business.


” All these they do because they know you cannot increase you fares, you do so and you lose the passengers while their airlines on that route do not get to suffer these injustices. Passengers will fly the competition because they are cheaper. Why are we not doing Abidjan? Why are we not doing Lome?


” Even the one we are doing, we are losing massively. People out of ignorance will say Nigerian airlines are making a lot of money on the West Coast, let the, come and fly and see it themselves. Air Peace has lost N1.2billion in the last year doing the West Coast route” Onyema lamented.

Zenith Bank Plc was presented with a Certificate for Greenhouse Gas Auditing by V4 Advisors after a successful completion of the Bank’s Greenhouse Gas Audit for the 2018 Financial Year. The presentation of the certificate and the report of the Auditors was done by V4 Advisors at the Zenith Bank Head Office on May 21, 2019.

The Executive Director, Dr. Temitope Fasoranti, who received the certificate on behalf of the Bank said the Bank started this effort with the 2016 Financial Year and has carried out three greenhouse gas audits to date. He explained that the Bank understands the relationship between greenhouse gas emission and climate change and appreciates the role it is expected to play towards combating the menace of climate change.



Also speaking on the milestone, the Country Manager Lynsey Elston highlighted that Zenith Bank is the first Nigerian bank to consecutively report the carbon emissions of their Head Office in Lagos using a certified tool which is built on the internationally recognized “GHG Protocol”. She commended the bank for proving its commitment to United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) Goal 13, Climate Action, in addition to complying with Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Standards”.. In response to her, the Executive Director said the initiative has significantly helped the bank reduce its overall carbon footprints and drive energy efficiency.

V4 Advisors is a UAE-based provider of advisory and consulting solutions on climate change and greenhouse gas emissions. The firm’s calculation and reporting tool has been reviewed by the World Resources Institute (WRI) for conformance with the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard.

Wife of former President Goodluck Jonathan, Patience , on Friday urged the Federal High Court in Lagos to order the release of the $ 5 . 7 m and N 2. 4 bn seized from her by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission 
.
Her lawyer , Chief Ifedayo Adedipe ( SAN ) , urged Justice Mojisola Olatoregun to dismiss the application by the EFCC , praying that the money be permanently forfeited to the Federal Government .

Adedipe argued that it was wrong for the EFCC to tag the money as proceeds of crime , when Patience had committed no crime and when nobody complained that their money was missing.

The SAN said the funds were cash gifts which Patience received when her husband was in office.

Adedipe said such gifts were normal , pointing out that even the wife of President Muhammadu Buhari, Aisha , was seeking to build a university .

The lawyer contended that Section 17 of the Advance Fee Fraud , which EFCC relied upon to seize Patience’ s funds, was only applicable to fraudsters.

“ It is not the law that if the EFCC finds money in an account and it doesn ’ t like the owner’ s face , it comes to court and says ‘forfeit it ’ .
“ The government is at liberty to apply for forfeiture but the offence must be stated .

“ The first respondent is a wife to a former deputy governor , governor , Vice President , and President .

“ Even the current occupier of the office of the First Lady wants to build a university .
“ In this country , First Ladies enjoy a lot of goodwill . She ( Patience) stated that governors gave her money . Nobody wrote that she stole their money ,” the SAN said.

Adedipe said there was no justification for the money to be forfeited to the Federal Government as the EFCC had not proved that Patience stole money from the government or any individual.

Rant HQ blog got wind of a story begging to trend with it’s attendant issues.

A thief was caught, stripped, beaten, even fed and told to help desilt the gutter. Jungle justice you say, but this time, he was made to work for the society.

According to Richard Blackstone a facebook user, the thief was given a different kind of treatment.

He wrote;

“This muscled guy was caught stealing in enugu , He was whipped small. Afterwards, we bought food for him, gave him two bottles of fanta drinks to quench his thirst and supplied him with one bag of sachet water. He was then given a shovel to desilt the big gutter leading to my poultry farm road in enugu, What a beautiful thing. He doesn’t need to go to jail. I think this is better than killing them or jail, let’s use them to keep our country clean.”

Lady cries out after landlady and caretaker rented house to her, only for it to be demolished by govt a month after she moved in (videos/photos)

A Nigerian lady simply identified as Wealthy, has cried out for help after a house she rented a month ago, was demolished by the state government.
 
According to the lady whose name is @unusual_wealth on Instagram, the house had been marked for demolition by the Lagos state government but the landlady who is based in the US allegedly connived with the caretaker, wiped off the demolition sign, repainted the house and gave it it out for rent.
 
On May 17th, she was at work when she received a call that her house was being demolished with all her properties and credentials inside the house.

On Friday, 17th of may 2019 my neighbour called me from work that our house is being demolished.

I rushed down and behold, Lagos state demolition task force has already started demolished the building. I rushed in to see if i can be able to pick few things, but the dust was too much for my lungs ...I started choking and unable to breath ran out where I had asthmatic attack.

I became unconscious and was rushed to Lagos state emergency and accident unit, ojota.

As of now, I can't find most of my properties, my valuables especially my credentials.

This building has been marked for demolition for a while but the Landlady and caretaker repainted the building and gave it out for rent to Us.

Both the Landlady and the caretaker have not even bothered to talk to us since this incident.
I tried reaching her on whatsapp. 
She ignored all my messages and calls until yesterday evening, 22nd of May 2019 .

Kidnapping, banditry and cattle rustling will now attract the death penalty in Katsina State - Governor Aminu Masari declares

Governor Aminu Masari  of Katsina State has declared that kidnapping, banditry and cattle rustling are now to attract the death penalty in a move to check the rising wave of crimes in the state.  
 
Masari signed into law yesterday the state’s revised penal codes on crime and criminality. The signing preceded the valedictory session of the State Executive Council (SEC).
 
The new law also prescribes life jail and fine for rapists. The governor declared that the law was necessitated by the spate of killings and other  banditry attacks in the state.

Quote:In his words: “we are all aware that Katsina State is currently faced with security challenges hence the need to revisit our penal and procedural laws to deal with any suspect that may be found wanting. 
The laws signed today, particularly, the section dealing with kidnapping, cattle rustling, banditry, rape and other related offences  are now made capital offences.
Cattle rustling and kidnapping now carry the maximum penalty which is death sentences, while the offence of rape now carries life imprisonment.” 
 
Masari said government hoped  that the imposition of the capital punishment  would  serve as a deterrent to criminals.

Romance Scam: Court jails man for defrauding American $5,260

Justice J.K Omotosho of the Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State has convicted and sentenced Onuoha Danhessy Akachuku (alias Joe Dickson) to three months imprisonment, for defrauding an American, Maria Jose Alvarez the sum of $5,260 (Five Thousand Two Hundred and Sixty American U S Dollars) in a failed online romance deal.
 
A statement from EFCC says Akachuku was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Port Harcourt's Zonal Office, on April 27, 2017 on a seven -count charge bordering on Conspiracy and Obtaining Money by False Pretense.
 
One of the counts read: “That you Onuoha Danhessy Akachukwu (alias Joe Dickson) sometimes between 2015 and 2016, at Port Harcourt, Rivers State, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable court, with intent to defraud, did obtain the sum of Two Thousand, Three Hundred and Seventy US Dollars ($2,370) from one Maria Jose Alvarez (an American) Via Money Gram which you transferred into your account number 3071174186 domiciled with First Bank Plc under the pretence that you are Joe Dickson an American Engineer based in the United Kingdom willing to marry her, a pretext which you knew to be false, and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 1 (1) (a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006 and punishable under Section 1 (3) of the same Act”.
 
He pleaded "not guilty" to the charges preferred against him, thus necessitating his trial. The trial progressed and the prosecution counsel, R.E. Alao called three witnesses to establish the case. However, Akachuku applied for a plea bargain and changed his plea to "guilty" and the bargain was adopted by both the prosecution and defence counsels.
 
Justice Omotoshp convicted him accordingly and sentenced him to three months imprisonment and a fine of N200,000 (Two Hundred Thousand Naira) only. The convict was also made restitution the sum of $2000 (Two Thousand United States Dollars) to his victim.
 
Akachuku's journey to prison began on April, 2017 when he was arrested and subsequently arraigned for using many false FaceBook accounts to defraud one Maria Jose Alvarez, an American of the sum of Five Thousand, Two Hundred and Sixty American U S Dollars ($5,260).
 
The convict had claimed to be an American Engineer based in the United Kingdom. With this disguise, he was able to hoodwink his victim into a romantic relationship which according to him, will lead to marriage. However, rather than marry his victim as arranged, he contrived so many lies aimed at defrauding the American and succeeded in duping her to the tune of $5,260.

RHAPSODY OF REALITIES

SATURDAY, 25TH MAY.

BE SPIRITUALLY MINDED.

For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be (Romans 8:6-7).

When we talk about being spiritually minded, the context here is being spiritually minded towards God; setting your mind and affection on Him and things pertaining to His Kingdom.

Some have asked, “How do I set my mind on the Lord and on spiritual things?” It’s by setting your attention on the Word! The Word shows you what spiritual things are and delivers them to you. That’s because God’s Word is Light (John 1:1-5), and light defines and reveals (Ephesians 5:13). Your spiritual eyes need God’s light—His Word—to show you what spiritual things from Him are, so you can “mind” those things; set your focus on them.

Romans 8:5 declares, “For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.” You’re after the Spirit if your affection, the things that excite you, and what you focus your attention on, are things pertaining to Christ, His Gospel, and the eternal life that He brought to us.

Some Christians don’t show or give sufficient interest, time, attention, and effort to studying God’s Word and other spiritually edifying endeavours as praying, attending church services regularly, etc. They’d rather set their minds and attention on worldly things. But the Spirit sounds a strong warning to such folks. We read it as part of our opening scripture; it says, “For to be carnally minded is death…” (Romans 8:6). But if you want to live the life of righteousness, with the peace of prosperity, you have to be spiritually minded.

The fact that you study this devotional to learn God’s Word, to learn about Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, and the Kingdom of God, is being spiritually minded towards God. Continue in it.

PRAYER

Dear Father, thank you for awakening in me the consciousness of my spirituality through the Word. My attention is set on things above—not on earthly, carnal, mundane, or transient things. I walk in victory, power and the dominion of the Spirit, because I’m spiritually minded, with my unalloyed attention on the true light of the Word, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Dear Father, I thank You for Your life that's at work in me, in every fibre of my being, in every cell of my blood and in every bone of my body. My whole being is immune to death, decay, and the corrupting influences in the world! My path is the path of life, righteousness, joy, gladness and peace forevermore.

I walk in the light of my justification, rejoicing in the life of glory and righteousness in Christ! Having been justified by faith, I have peace with God, absolved of all guilt, free to live and serve the Lord joyously, and gloriously, in Jesus' Name. Amen.

LASPOTECH guard kills colleague for ritual (photo)

The Lagos state police command have arrested a private security guard employed by the management of the Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH), Ikorodu, Cletus Wilson, for allegedly murdering his colleague, John Okoro, and attempting to flee with his body parts.
 
According to reports, Cletus who secures the Computer Engineering Faculty of the polytechnic, had tricked his colleague, John, into the bush within the school premises where he first used a metal object to hit his head. Confirming that John was unconscious, Cletus slaughtered the deceased and then chopped off his hand. He was about to run with the body part when he was apprehended by his colleagues.
 
The management of the school immediately alerted the police along Ikorodu-Sagamu road and Cletus was arrested. 
 
Confirming the incident, the divisional police officer in charge of the police station, Adekunle Omisakin, said the suspect will be charged to court immediately after investigations into the matter have been concluded.
