Emir, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi
 
Sir Muhammadu Sanusi I (1905-1990 ), the grandfather of the present Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II reigned for only five years as Emir of Kano before he was forced to resign.
 
He was said not to be in the good books of the authorities of the day due to his views which were considered offensive. He was perceived to be too independent minded by the political authorities and a web of intrigues were weaved around him in order to remove him as Emir. In the course of his reign, a panel was set up to investigate alleged misappropriation of the then Kano Native Authority’s funds and the Emir alongside other members of the Native Authority were made to testify before the commission with D.J.M Muffet as sole commissioner.
 
At the end of the inquiry, Muffet in his report advised the Regional Government that Sir Muhammadu Sanusi I should resign. He therefore tendered his resignation to the Governor of the Northern Region, Sir Kashim Ibrahim on 28th of March 1963.
 
It will appear that the present Emir, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi is facing same circumstances. He has made some salient points on the economy and some policies Governor Ganduje sees as offensive.
 
As a successful banker and risk manager with track records in the industry, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, now Muhammadu Sanusi II, became the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria from where he later mounted the throne as the Emir of Kano after being suspended from office as CBN governor by the then Nigeria’s President, Goodluck Jonathan when he alleged that $20b was missing from the treasury.
 
The power elites in Kano state then, led by the Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who has now also turned into a political adversary of Governor Ganduje, despite public resistance by the public, were clearly instrumental in the selection of Sanusi II as the 14th Emir of Kano. He was turbaned on 8th of June 2014 after the death of his grand uncle and 13th Emir of Kano Alhaji Ado Bayero 1930-2014.
 
Sanusi’s ‘sins’
 
Sanusi II is known for his criticisms on matters of social and economic development in Kano and Nigeria at large, offering advice and suggestions even when they seem to be displeasing to the political powers especially on the Girl Child Education and issues on family planning. His ordeals with the Kano state governor dated back to 2017.
 
In one of such bold reactions on government plans in April 2017 Sanusi II challenged the Kano state governor, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje while delivering a keynote address at a function in Kaduna, on the governor’s plan to secure a loan of $1.85b from a Chinese Development Bank that would fund 85% of a Light Rail project to be constructed by a Chinese company CR18G-CRECG. The project was for the construction of a 74 kilometer facility in the state with the intention of reducing traffic on the roads and to ease commercial activities.

Rubbishing the plan, Sanusi II said that the plan to build the Light Rail project was built on a shaky foundation. He said, “we have governors, they go to China and spend one month on a tour and come back with MoU on debts.
 
“China will lend you $1.8b to build light rail. This light rail will be done by workers from China, the trains will come from China, the engines will come from China, the labor will come from China while the driver is Chinese.

“At the end of the day, what do you benefit from them? Your citizens will ride on a train and when you ride on a train in northern Nigeria, in a state like Kano or Katsina, where are you going to? You are not going to industrial estate to work. You are not going to school. You are not going to the farm. You borrow money from China to invest in trains so that your citizens can ride on them to go for weddings and naming ceremonies.”
 
This did not go down well with the political powers in the state and in a swift reaction, the State House of Assembly accused Sanusi II of spreading false information against Governor Ganduje on his trip to China. He was also accused of spending the funds of the Emirate without the approval of the governor or the House of Assembly. As a result, a probe was established with a view to indicting him and subsequently dethroning him.
 
Also, Emir Sanusi II was accused of not supporting Ganduje but seen to have soft spot for the opposition candidate in the last general election that was declared inconclusive in Kano by the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC.
 
It was clear that Sanusi II was going to have problems with Governor Ganduje. On the day INEC declared Governor Ganduje winner of the inconclusive election, the APC supporters trooped to the Government House Kano to celebrate with the governor. In the course of the wild celebration they chanted songs calling for the removal of Sanusi II saying; “Tsohon gwamna sabon sarki” meaning “we support the incumbent governor and want a new Emir”. They didn’t stop there, they went to the Coronation House where the governor addressed them and they destroyed portraits and pictures of Emir Sanusi II.
 
However, Sanusi II managed to survive with the intervention of some dignitaries in the country among whom were Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Sultan of Sokoto and former Presidents Ibrahim Babangida and Abubakar Abdulsalam. Following this intervention, the State Assembly as well as the Public Complaints and Anti-Graft Commission closed the case.
 
In a swift reaction, Sanusi II had no choice than to apologize to Governor Ganduje at a grand reception he organized in his honor at his palace asking him to be a forgiving leader.

Creation of new Emirates
 
Thereafter, the state government in a political move meant to cut Emir Sanusi II to size by creating four new Emirates of the same first class status as his as well as indict him for alleged misappropriation of funds in order to dethrone him. The State House of Assembly would, on one hand, ensure that the powerful Emirate was broken into five Emirates of the same status while, on the other hand, the State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission would reopen an earlier probe on the issue of the Emirates funds.
 
With this plan in place a petition by some legal practitioners in the state led by Mr Salisu Ibrahim called on the state Assembly to create four new Emirates by amending the Emirate law thereby cutting down the size of the Kano Emirate and revisiting history to upgrade some old chiefdoms. The assembly immediately consented and adopted it. Four additional first class Emirate Councils were then created by the Assembly within 48 hours in Karaye, Rano, Bichi and Gaya making Kano the fifth. Out of the former 43 local government areas under the Kano Emirate, only 10 are now under it in the new arrangement.
 
As the Assembly was deliberating on the Bill, the state governor revealed to newsmen that he would sign it to law as soon as it gets to his table. Subsequently the Assembly passed the amendment into law and the governor assented to it thereby making it the fastest law ever in this part of the country. This action was however not without opposition from some concerned Kano citizens.
 
A member of the royal house stated that Ganduje had erred by involving the institution of the Emirate arguing that the governor should have limited his action to Sanusi II by simply dethroning him and not breaking the Kano Emirate into five.
 
Other concerned Kano citizens then went ahead to institute a suit against the move by the state Assembly. Ruling in an ex parte motion dated May 10, 2019, being Friday, and filed by Hon. Sule Gwarzo, Justice Nasiru Saminu restrained Governor Ganduje, Kano House of Assembly, the Speaker, Clerk of the Assembly, the Attorney General and the state Printer from implementing the division of Kano into five Emirates.
 
In an order of interim injunction, the court directed all the parties in the suit to maintain the status quo pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.
 
It was not clear if this order was served on the parties concerned on Friday and Governor Ganduje went ahead to make appointments. He then issued staff of office to the newly appointed Emirs in the new Emirates at the weekend, while he received the court order on Tuesday, four days after.
 
Alhaji Ibrahim AbdulKadir was appointed as Emir of Gaya, Alhaji Tafida Abubakar Ila as Emir of Rano, Dr. Alhaji Ibrahim Abubakar II as Emir of Karaye while the son of the late Emir Ado Bayero, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero was appointed as the Emir of Bichi.

On the other hand, the corruption charges were still on. The former Personal Secretary of Emir Sanusi II, Isah Bayero is among those to be quizzed by the panel even as as he is now seen as a strong supporter of the moves by Governor Ganduje to unseat Emir Sanusi.
 
Isah was said to have evidence which would be used by investigators to prosecute the Emir who is charged with spending N6b without the consent of the state government or the Assembly. Some structures in palace were said to have been modernized by destroying the artifacts inherited from past Emirs.
 
Dangote’s intervention saves Emir
 
Interestingly, there was no intervention from the Arewa Consultative Forum, the Sultan of Sokoto, other state governors or the Presidency on the matter. Sanusi II was therefore left to himself.
 
However, the business tycoon Aliko Dangote was said to have been the only one who, from the beginning pleaded with Governor Ganduje not to remove the Emir but Ganduje insisted.
 
Sources from government said the governor gave Dangote some conditions which must be met in order to save the Emir since the Emir would not stop criticising the government.
 
The source said “Governor Ganduje’s response was that he told Dangote to go back and tell the Emir that he should choose from three alternatives: to resign on his own, to be removed from office or for the government to create additional Emirates in the state. Ganduje assured Dangote that one of the three options would be implemented by government since the Emir would not stop playing partisan politics. But for the quick intervention by Dangote, Ganduje would have dethroned the Emir”, the source revealed.

The move by Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, to establish a legal marijuana industry in the ‘sunshine’ state may have hit the rocks even before his very own eyes, Igbere TV reports. 

This is just as findings by Igbere TV on Saturday showed that Akeredolu is not likely to find a willing ally in the Federal Government over his pursuit. 

Despite the collaboration being received from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), the governor has been disowned by the Presidential Advisory Committee for the Elimination of Drug Abuse (PACEDA), an appendage of the Presidency.

PACEDA, in a statement made available to Igbere TV on Saturday, stated that no amount of money could be worth the lives of those that would be affected should marijuana be legalised in the country, as being canvassed by Akeredolu and, by extension, the NDLEA.

The warning came four days after Governor Akeredolu advised the Federal Government to encourage the cultivation of medicinal cannabis, also known as Indian hemp, in the country.

The statement was signed by the PACEDA Chair, Mohammed Buba Marwa.

Marwa, a retired military top officer, noted that the timing was so inauspicious, considering that the government had been doing everything to eradicate drug abuse in the country.

“It is disturbing that at this time when about 10 million Nigerians are abusing cannabis, anyone or group will be considering or advocating for Nigeria to legalise the growing of marijuana for economic or whatever purposes.

“Our committee has spent the last six months going round the country to obtain firsthand information about the dangers of drug abuse and how to combat it and we have been faced with the stark reality of how deep the menace has damaged and still damaging lives, especially the youths.

“No doubt, President Muhammadu Buhari was worried about this emergency situation, hence the decision to set up PACEDA to find a lasting solution to the threat. We should not, therefore, fold our arms or keep sealed lips while deliberate attempts are being made to sabotage the genuine efforts of the Federal Government in the interest of the nation.

“We should not forget so soon how many over-the-counter (OTC) drugs were made prescription medicines when millions of our young minds and adults were abusing such. How can we then turn around to call for legalising growing of cannabis when the Federal Government is still in the process of curtailing and eliminating the same?

“We dare say that no economic gain is worth the life of any Nigerian daily damaged on the street as a result of the effect of cannabis. There is, therefore, the need for all stakeholders at the federal, state and local government levels to rally round the Federal Government’s efforts at eliminating the menace of drug abuse rather than engaging in any counterproductive venture,” the statement read.

Despite the widespread appeal of Akeredolu's position on social media, some critics have rebuked the governor.

Among those who criticized the governor include Senator Shehu Sani, the lawmaker representing Kaduna Central in the National Assembly. 

Sani, who took to Twitter via his handle @ShehuSani on Wednesday, May 15, wrote;

“My brother Akeredolu, Lagos partnered with Kebbi for rice, please partner with Niger for beans, Kaduna for ginger or partner with Benue for yam. Please leave this Indian Hemp matter for now, abeg.”

But Akeredolu is determined in his pursuit, despite several condemnation and backlash received in the last few days. 

“The governor believes that the global legal marijuana industry is primed to be a jumbo in years ahead and Ondo State is trying to think ahead of time,” an aide of the governor, who did not want his name mentioned, told Igbere TV on Saturday.

Corps member returns home three months to the end of national service to find his new wife pregnant for his best friend

No young man or old man would pray to be in the shoes of Elias Audu. The accursed fate that has befallen him is terrible and a huge blow to his ego.

Last year, one month before he reported at the NYSC camp in Osun State, Audu had married his young wife. The graduate of Nasarawa State University Keffi, an indigene of Keana Local Government Area of the state, then patriotically proceeded to Osun State where he is presently serving his fatherland. In the meantime, the wife he wedded 10 months ago, Tessy, continues to live in their rented apartment in Lafia. The native of Akwanga Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, a Second Year diploma student at Nasarawa State Polytechnic, had embarked on and completed a three-month industrial attachment.

The couple agreed to put on hold pregnancy till he completes his national service and return to Nasarawa to find a good job. Then they can turn their attention to the critical matter of giving his aged and anxious mother a grandchild. Now, three months to the end of his national service, Audu’s world came crashing down. He returned home last week to find his wife pregnant. Guess who impregnated his wife: His best friend.


The crisis before marriage

Audu, still dazed by shock, recounts the sequence of events leading to the scandal in an exclusive chat with our correspondent.

His narration: “I got married 10 months ago to my wife after we resolved our differences due to my discovery that she was going out with someone else. Initially, I did not intend to go into a serious relationship after that discovery I mean, I was so much in love with her only for her to have jilted me. I vowed never to have any serious relationship with any woman until after my service year. But we got over the episode. She convinced me and proved to be a different woman. She loved me genuinely, and despite my resolve, I found myself falling in love with her again. It began gradually and with time, I could not do without her. She made me forget the past. In no time, all I could think of was to be with her for the rest of my life.”


The pressure to marry

“The pressure to get married from my old mum was overwhelming. My father had put pressure on me to get married and bear him grandchildren before his death. Unfortunately, he died six years ago without seeing my children. Being the only son in the family, my mother understandably also put me under pressure, that her time is almost up in this world and she would want to see me bear children before her final exit. That was the pressure that pushed me into getting married before my NYSC. When I took her to meet my mother, she fell in love with her on the spot and told me she was the very woman who would give her grandchildren. We got married soon after and look forward to a happy family with our kids. But we both agree that she will not “take in” until after my service year, little did I know that the devil would use my best friend to destroy my home.”


The man who got her pregnant

“I grow up together with Mike Agu in Keana. We are childhood friends. We attended the same primary school and also the same secondary school, Government Science School Lafia. He was fortunate to have gotten admission into the university before me. Nonetheless, we were very close friends. When I joined him at the university the following year, we were like brothers. Our relationship grew beyond ordinary friendship.

“When my name came out for the 2018 Batch B NYSC, I proceeded to Osun State immediately. My wife could not visit me in Osun because three of us who are corpers lived in one room. There was no need for her to come around since accommodation will be a problem her coming around means I have to rent my own apartment which is beyond my means. Since I did not have the means, I decided she should not visit. I was not happy to leave my new wife all alone for one year, but she was equally in school and we needed to understand ourselves; more so, with my close friends and relations in Lafia, I felt she was in safe hands.

“While in Osun, I kept in touch with her as much as I could. My friends I spoke and chatted with also told me she was doing great. I had told Mike Agu, who was the closest to me, to always check my rented apartment in Lafia to see that my wife was doing well. Mike had finished his service year and was teaching in a private school in Lafia. How could I have known that I was putting my wife in harm’s way?”


The shocking discovery

“Throughout this year, I have not visited home due to the tight schedule of my duties at my place of primary assignment. My last visit was in November 2018. I had got some break and decided to visit home again. I arrived home with so much joy. The first warning sign was when I got to the park and my wife was not around to welcome me as usual.

“It was her next-door neighbour that came to welcome me at the park. Even Mike, my friend, whom I have been communicating with since I left Osun State, was nowhere at the park. When I asked why my wife was not at the park, her neighbour told me she was not feeling too well and they advised her to stay at home. I did not buy that explanation but I kept quiet and could not wait to get home. When I got home, I met the shock of my life. There stood my wife with a protruding stomach.

I was transfixed, trying to recall if there was any time she told me she was pregnant, but I could not remember any. Her neighbour was in an unusual hurry to leave. After her departure, I asked my wife what was going on. She broke down and confessed that Mike seduced her, they had sex and the pregnancy resulted. As for Mike, I have not called him since I came back home. I leave him to his conscience.”


My dilemma

“When I visited my mother in the village, she was so happy that her son’s new wife is pregnant. The news has reached her! My mother believes that I am responsible for the pregnancy. She is not aware of the arrangement we had to wait until after my NYSC programme. I am still in shock and confused about what to do at the moment. But one thing I know is that she can’t be my wife again and forever. I want her to take the decision herself instead of waiting for me to push her out. I am not even going to tell my mother. From here, I am going back to Osun State and I will not come back to Nasarawa State until after my passing out. I intend to settle down in Abuja or Lagos to look for something doing. Between me and her, it is over. I will move on with my life.”


Tessy’s story

When our correspondent contacted Tessy after her lectures at the Polytechnic, she burst into tears wailing that what ought to be a family secret (and hopefully settled internally) has been exposed to the media by her husband.

“I had never cheated on my husband since I got married to him,

I never even contemplated it, but the temptation of sex pushed me into it. I consider it the devil’s work. I am a victim,” she cries.

Tessy makes a clean breast of it: “The truth is that before I got married to him, I had four abortions from unwanted pregnancies, and I almost lost my life in the last abortion. The doctor warned me not to do abortion again, that it might damage my womb. I can’t explain actually how Mike, his closest friend, find his way into me. He actually lured me to his house after an outing. And truly, he was good in bed, which attracted me to make it regularly.

“Mike was so good in bed he soon wiped the memories of my husband’s touch from my mind. I lost control of myself. We had sex every day after he closed from work. I always joined him after I closed from my place of work where I was doing my IT. We had sex daily, including weekends for two months; I soon forgot that I was actually a married woman.

“As the second month, I began to notice changes in my body. I later found out from a test that I was more than a month pregnant. I told my neighbour that I had been doing it with Mike all these while. She asked me the way forward, and the answer till date is difficult because I didn’t want to lose either my life or womb due to another round of abortion; this child might be my last opportunity.

“For several weeks, I slept and thought over it; I was in turmoil, I never knew what to do, because how will my husband react to this when he got to know after we both agreed to hold ourselves until he completes his service? On the other hand, I prayed to God that when he eventually knows, he should allow me to keep the pregnancy because it might be my last opportunity to have a child. At the moment I am not prepared to abort it. So, I am waiting patiently for his decision.


So what about Mike Agu, who put her in the family way?

“He has left Lafia to an unknown place since he discovered that my husband is back,” Tessy says. “And since the sad development, his two lines have not been going through. I can’t reach him.”

Currently, she is distressed, at a crossroads. Says she: “ I don’t know what to do, I am waiting for his (Audu’s) final decision on me. But I have told my parents to seek a loan to pay my husband back his pride price. I know I have disappointed him, but I am pleading with him to forgive me.”


Mike Agu, the villain

An effort was made to reach Mike Agu, the man who got his friend’s wife pregnant, for his own side of the story. Eventually, our correspondent got to him through the Vice Principal of the school where he is a teacher.

Without mincing words, Agu blames Tessy for the misadventure.

Here is his response: “The girl demanded sex from me after I took her out; she actually begged for it and temptation overtook me. When she made it a regular thing without contraceptive, I raised the issue of pregnancy but she said she knows when to get pregnant and that she doesn’t enjoy sex with a condom.”

He is nonetheless ashamed of his conduct. “I feel so ashamed and disappointed with myself,” he laments. “This matter will linger long in our village and it will affect the cordial relationship between myself and Elias, including our parents. It is too bad that the devil has used me. I don’t know how to apologize to him. I have betrayed his trust and confidence in me. May God forgive me of my sins.”

Following the strict law against homosexuality in Nigeria, it has been gathered that Nigerians are now top asylum seekers in Canada. The Canadian authorities in its report, revealed that two out of every three Nigerian applicants claim to be victims of homophobic attacks. It further revealed that Nigeria had 12,138 pending applications as of December 2018, in its Refugee Protection Division of the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada. 

While the total number of pending applications from across the world stood at 71,675, it was gathered that Nigerians kicked off Haitians by taking 17% of the top asylum seekers in Canada over homosexuality. Punch reported that while Haiti came a distant second with 6,811 pending applications, India has 5,175. Mexico has 3,525; Colombia, which ended a civil war barely three years ago, has 3,056 while China has 2,105.

Speaking to CBC News, Jawad Kassab who led the refugee and immigration programme at Legal Aid Ontario in 2017, said the agency had identified an unusual pattern in sexual orientation claims filed by Nigerian refugee seekers. He further said  he was concerned that if claims were fabricated, refugees with legitimate claims might have a harder time getting the help they need.

Urhokpota ground venue of the event was besieged by various groups of traditional worshippers who took their turn to offer prayers for the good health and well-being of His Royal Majesty Ewuare II, as well as for the Royal family, Chiefs and entire people of Benin Kingdom.
They also offered prayers to God and the ancestors to help avert all forms of evils, bloodshed, kidnapping, Armed robbery, cult killings and illicit human trafficking from the Kingdom and indeed Nigeria.
Importantly, curses were heaped on the enemies of Benin Kingdom and all those who have committed an affront and sacrilegious acts against the Benin throne and the Kingdom.
Prayers were also offered by the traditional worshippers against those who perpetrate evils and various crimes in the Kingdom, so that they will reap the consequences of their negative actions against the Benin throne, the Kingdom and the people.
Various animals were slaughtered to give efficacy to the pronouncement while the traditional groups later engaged in a procession along some major streets in Benin City including Sokponba Road, Kings Square, Murtala Mohammed Way, Igbesamwan Street, Akpakpava road and ended at Emotan Shrine on Oba Market road.
The exercise was presided by the Ewaise Group headed by Chief Eguezigbon, and Chief Ohen-Egie of Ogbeson.

A 50-year-old, woman Idowu Ademola, who allegedly specialized in trafficking foreigners for domestic servitude across the country, have been arrested by operatives of the Inspector General Police Special Intelligence Response Team, IRT, in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Police source disclosed that Ademola was arrested recently, when officials of the National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, NAPTIP, who were on her trail following reports of her activities, sought the assistance of the Inspector General of Police, Adamu Mohammed, to track and apprehend the suspect.

It further disclosed that Ademola ran into trouble when a 17-year-old Togolese, identified simply as Mary, who Ademola, trafficked to the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, to work as a housemaid sustained severe burns from a pressure cooker accident.

It was learned that Official of NAPTIP, were contacted when doctors at the hospital where the Togolese maid was being treated discovered that she was trafficked into the country illegally to work as a maid for a woman identified as Angel and her salaries were being paid Ademola.

It was further revealed that Angela was arrested by the officials of NAPTIP in Abuja and she confessed during interrogations that she met Ademola who gave her the maid through one Folake Adelore, but when she was arrested, she told the NAPTIP officials that she doesn’t know where Ademola lives.

The situation prompted a request to the IGP to deploy his operatives at the IRT headed by Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, to arrest Ademola.

When Ademola, a widow and a native of Okitipuka area of Ondo State was interrogated she told police that she wasn’t aware that it was criminal offence to bring foreigners into the country and give them out as domestic help.

Puts Aregbesola in charge of Lagos

PERHAPS in a bid to avoid a repeat of the 2015 last-minute disappointment, National Leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Bola Tinubu, has reportedly relocated to Abuja to personally monitor shifting political developments regarding the election of the next leadership of the National Assembly, Saturday Tribune has learnt.

Calls to the mobile phone of his media aide, Tunde Rahman, rang out and as of press time, he was yet to either return the calls or reply the SMS sent him.

Tinubu is backing Senator Ahmed Lawan for Senate presidency and Femi Gbajabiamila for the speakership of the House of Representatives, the same candidates he could not carry over the finishing line four years ago.

While Lawan is seen more as President Muhammadu Buhari’s anointed candidate for the job, Gbajabiamila, from Surulere Federal Constituency in Lagos, is an anointed of Tinubu, though Lawan, too, was propped up by the leading party chieftain in 2015, after dropping his initial candidate, former Benue State governor, Senator George Akume.

In 2015, Tinubu reportedly failed to show his hand deep in the contest early enough in order not to be seen as being dictatorial, preferring to line behind the then newly-elected president, Buhari.

Gbajabiamila and Lawan were pretty much doing their campaigning then using the party machinery with Tinubu using the president’s influence to rally support for them.

The duo also got involved in horse-trading with opposition leaders.

Saturday Tribune was privy then to Gbajabiamila’s meeting with a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governor from the South at a hotel in a posh area of Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), weeks to the parliamentary contest he lost to the outgoing Speaker, Yakubu Dogara.

With the stakes believed to be higher this time, Tinubu is reportedly handling the expected high-wire horse-trading trailing the emergence of the duo again as the preferred candidates of the party, considering the internal opposition to their candidature.

While Lawan is reportedly having it easier, selling his candidacy to stakeholders outside of his party, the unmistaken emblem of the Lagos “godfather” on Gbajabiamila’s candidacy is said to be making things difficult somewhat for the four-term lawmaker.


“Gbaja, on his own, isn’t a problem, though people have been talking about his elitist attitude. But anything with Tinubu’s hand on it, many within the party, do not just want to hear it, especially our people from the other side (North) and oga (Tinubu) doesn’t always know when to back down. There is a popular joke in Abuja now, especially at the party secretariat. If you say you are broke, they will ask, is Asiwaju not in town and that if he is in town, you can’t be broke because all you need to do is go and tell him some lies that he wants to hear about his candidates or 2023 and you will come back with ….(mentions denomination),” a source who was once chummy with the leader, disclosed.

Tinubu is reportedly handling the reaching-out because his rumoured presidential ambition is said to be closely tied to the success of getting Gbajabiamila and Lawan enthroned, particularly the former as the head of the legislative institution with more youthful, exuberant and impressionable politicians.

For allies of Gbajabiamila and those who would play ball from the opposition to get him to the political Promised Land, Saturday Tribune learnt that their loyalty is going to be sustained for some future assignment.


The implication of having a need for them, according to insiders, is that such tested and trusted allies would have four years of comfort under the Gbajabiamila leadership.

The said bait of not using and dumping them, considering future engagement and partnership, is reportedly working more for the Tinubu camp since any form of betrayal from their end would mean losing massive support for the future aspiration which is bigger and of higher political value than what is being sought now.

It was also learnt that lawmakers from the opposition, especially those not too close to Dogara, may find comfort in Tinubu’s arm and possibly break ranks with their party in the event of the party directing its congressmen and women, to, again, work against Tinubu’s interest.

Gbajabiamila recently boasted that he already had the number to sail smoothly in the speakership contest but some opponents are saying it will be too early to declare victory.

While President Buhari has characteristically not been too loud about his support for Lawan, it was learnt that not saying anything regarding Gbajabiamila’s emergence at the dinner where the Lagos politician was presented has made the journey more tortuous for Tinubu’s camp.

The relocation to Abuja to oversee things directly is also said to be connected with the rumoured power play that could see “one go for one.”

With both Lawan and Gbajabiamila being projected as Tinubu’s anointed, there is the likelihood of the party leader being told at the zero hour to pick one and leave the other position for other tendencies in the party.

His camp is said to be working assiduously to avoid a situation of having to make such a tough call.


His allies in the South-West are also coming in and out of Abuja to confer with him but one ally that would be expected to be by his side at this crucial moment, former Osun State governor, Rauf Aregbesola, is reportedly missing in the Abuja action.

Aregbesola spearheaded the defunct Tinubu’s Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) parliamentary mutiny of 2011 which enthroned the current Sokoto State governor, Aminu Tambuwal, as the Speaker of the House of Representatives against then-PDP’s choice, Mulikat Adeola-Akande.

The PDP paid Tinubu back in the same coin in 2015, helping the APC to install Dogara in place of the party’s pick, Gbajabiamila.

Saturday Tribune learnt that Aregbesola is staying back in Lagos fixing the next cabinet of the incoming administration of Babajide Sanwoolu at Tinubu’s behest.

Seen as Tinubu’s closest ally, Aregbesola’s influence has been looming large on Lagos politics since his tenure ended in Osun State.

Saturday Tribune can confirm that names of likely picks for commissioners and special aides have been submitted by party leaders from local governments in the state and the man touching the final list up, in concert with the “Big Boss” in Abuja, is reportedly not the incoming governor but the former governor of Osun State.

Both the incoming governor and his deputy, Femi Hamzat, are said to be having minimal say in the composition of those who will work with them, though they reportedly made nominations.

With many of those expected to be nominated by Sanwoolu and Hamzat left out of the current list, disappointment is said to be setting in for many who worked tirelessly for the party’s victory.

“We are just here; we don’t know our fate yet. They have shared the thing (available positions) among themselves. The hawks are the ones in charge here,” a committed party man lamented to Saturday Tribune.

Meanwhile, the recent involvement of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) with the administrative leadership of the National Assembly is said to be part of the game plan to ensure a desired ending to the contest for Senate and House of Representatives’ top jobs.

Clerks of both chambers reportedly played a major role in swinging things in certain directions in 2015 and with the fear that the outgoing Senate President and Speaker may swing the process again using the top officials to keep the party’s anointed out of the seats again, the anti-graft commission is reportedly being involved to “sound a note of warning.”

Operatives of the commission swarmed collation centres in Lagos, Abuja and many other states during the final declaration of results of the 2019 general elections.

The official explanation was to prevent financial inducement of the electoral officers.

The voting procedure for the new NASS leadership has been a major dispute among contending factions with the majority favouring secret balloting, the type that rubbed the ruling party’s face in the mud four years back.

There is palpable fear in the ruling party that another secret balloting could produce a similar result.

The current probe of the assembly’s administrative leadership by the EFCC is said to be a ploy to have an unfettered access to the books and information that could help prevent another humiliating loss.

If things are not going the desired way with the voting procedure, it was learnt, the probe could become a major tool in beating everybody into line.

Investors identify regulatory synergy as panacea to increased market participation

 




                            
Investors have cited enhanced synergy between the different arms of the financial market and the regulators, as a way of boosting participation of retail shareholders, and attracting more investors into nation’s bourse.

Stating that this is imperative for sustained capital market development, and prevention of past regulatory lapses, they also called for a paradigm shift from listed firms’ current dependence on banks and capital market financing for borrowing purposes and projects’ expansion.

The investors, who spoke against the backdrop of MTN Nigeria Communications Plc listing of shares today, Thursday, on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), by introduction, and how to attract more investors, also cited the incidence of failed banks as a contributory factor to apathy and low investors’ confidence in the market.
Unlike an Initial Public Offer (IPO), listing by introduction means the company has already raised capital prior to the listing.


Specifically, the President of Constance Shareholders Association, Shehu Makail, called for synergy among operators and regulators – Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), NSE, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and National Pension Commission (PENCOM).

He maintained that appropriate synergy would enhance proper regulation of the industry, and reduce the prevalence of failed banks in Nigeria, which had seen shareholders lose their hard earned investments.

Also agreeing, the President Proactive Shareholders Association of Nigeria, Taiwo Oderinde, said there was need for regulatory synergy, as this would stir activities in the market and forestall future lapses experienced.“They need one another to thrive. Money is the common commodity all of them trade with. By collaborating, the regulators are taking actions geared toward growth, which will improve liquidity, boost investor confidence, raise issuer confidence and attract new listings into the market.”

An independent investor, Amaechi Egbo, also argued that enhanced collaboration among various stakeholders in the financial services will attract and sustain foreign investment, facilitate product development in the market, and reduce dependence on banks’ funding for capital market development.

“Regulators of finance such as the CBN, NAICON, SEC, NDIC, and PENCOM must collaborate. Nigeria is an emerging economy, and is also the biggest economy in Africa, so expectedly; financial activities will rise.“If this happens, it demands appropriate synergy between these regulatory authorities to collectively monitor both markets because they operate hand in hand. That will help us to properly develop and bring down the number of delisting firms, and restore investors’ confidence in the market.”

Meanwhile, MTN, Wednesday, announced that it has received approval to list on the Premium Board of NSE, which is set to proceed today by way of an introductory listing as already reported by The Guardian.

The mobile operator in a statement to The Guardian, said: “The listing by introduction means that the shares of existing MTN Nigeria shareholders will be listed without an additional public sale of shares. From this point, all MTN Nigeria shareholders will be free to trade their shares on the NSE.”

Commenting on the announcement, CEO of MTN Nigeria, Ferdi Moolman, was quoted: “It gives me great pleasure to confirm that the official listing via introduction of MTN’s shares on the NSE will take place on Thursday May 16.“We appreciate the continued support afforded us by the government, regulators and people of this great nation. In particular, I would like to thank the staff and management of MTN Nigeria who worked tirelessly to make this day possible. This is just the beginning; we still intend to pursue a future Public Offer giving more Nigerians greater access to the MTN opportunity.”

Also, MTN Group Chief Financial Officer, Ralph Mupita, said: “As MTN Group, we are very pleased that we are taking this first and important step towards increasing the local ownership of the company, and building the equity capital markets in Nigeria.”

Airtel 4G Network will accelerate economic activities – MD
 




                         
The Managing Director, Airtel Nigeria, Mr Segun Ogunsanya, says the launch of Airtel 4G in Imo with innovative offerings was to empower and offer value to the people of the state.

He said the launch was for the total modernization of the Airtel Network Infrastructure and would also accelerate economic and commercial activities in the state.

The International Bankers Magazine has conferred the Bank of Industry with the best Development Bank award.

The organiser of the award presented the award to the Bank at the London Stock Exchange recently, in recognition of its relentless drive to widen the spectrum of financial support to the nation’s entrepreneurs, especially the micro, small and medium scale enterprises and the players in the creative industry.


The award, according to industry players, was a boost the bank’s efforts to raise funds from the international market to finance its various intervention programmes in the nation’s real sector, especially the fast growing creative industry.

On assumption of duty barely two years ago, the Managing Director of BoI, Mr. Olukayode Pitan, had hinted on plans to raise $500million from the international market.

In his remarks at the occasion, the Bank’s CEO, thanked the organisers of the award, assuring that the BoI would not relent on its efforts to boost Nigeria’s real sector through an increased support to the MSMEs.

He said the Bank had realised over $100million profit within the ongoing financial year.

While restating the Bank’s commitment to financial prudence, Pitan expressed the determination of the institution to raise more funds to support more ventures with the potential to generate employment opportunities for the youths.

Pitan recently disclosed that a total of N44.34 billion was disbursed to beneficiaries of the federal government’s social intervention programmes at the end of 2018. He said through the implementation of the N-Power programme, one of the social protection schemes, soft loans valued at N15.34 billion were provided to 199,989 beneficiaries to purchase work-tools in sectors such as agriculture, health and education.

He added that under the Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme (GEEP), which is also a component of the social investment programme, the Bank facilitated the disbursement of N29 billion to 1,550,000 beneficiaries nationwide through its flagship intervention namely TraderMoni and MarketMoni.

EFCC may arrest, detain Saraki
The plot to weaken opposition to the emergence of Senator Ahmed Lawan, the preferred choice of the All Progressives Congress for the position of Senate President, has reached an advanced stage, Saturday PUNCH has learnt.

Saturday PUNCH gathered in Abuja on Friday that the ruling party was leaving nothing to chance as it was prepared to take full advantage of pending cases before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to whip uncooperative lawmakers into line.

It was learnt that the party’s strategists had reached a conclusion that it would be dangerous to underestimate the influence of the outgoing President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, who they argued was keenly interested in who would succeed him.

In order to checkmate him, there are strong indications that the EFCC may arrest and detain him after his tenure officially ends and keep him until new principal officers are elected.

This plot, Saturday PUNCH learnt, was part of strategies being considered in a bid to destabilise the opposition and whip other contenders into line.

A top-ranking security official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to the media, explained that investigations into Saraki’s stewardship as Kwara State Governor and later Senate President was part of a larger plot by the current administration to clip his political wings and ensure the APC had its way.

Saturday PUNCH was informed on Friday that the EFCC’s probe of Saraki’s property in Lagos and the interrogation of the National Assembly clerk as well as other management officials was part of the general plot.

Also being investigated by the anti-graft agency is the Clerk to the House of Representatives, Mr Patrick Giwa.

The clerks were grilled by the EFCC on Wednesday over alleged corruption infraction and diversion of the duty tour allowances of legislative aides to members of the National Assembly.

The EFCC had acted on a petition sent to it by the legislative aides, a copy of which was sent to Buhari.

The signatories to the petition were Messrs Chinedu Nwokeukwu and Sunday Chuba on behalf of over 3,000 legislative aides.

They wrote partly, “We are reliably informed, Your Excellency, that the presiding officers of the 8th National Assembly are using the Clerk of the National Assembly, Alhaji Sani Omolori, to cover the alleged diversion of our entitlements and allowances.

“The clerk should have proceeded on pre-retirement leave in November 2018, having attained the mandatory 60 years and 35 years of service. He was allegedly served a letter to that effect by the Office of the Head of Service of the Federation.”

A source said, “The executive and, by extension, the APC are desperate to install Senator Lawan as the next Senate President, but they know that Saraki may frustrate their plans. With him in the upper chamber, the party may not succeed in its bid to have its candidate as the next Senate President.

“So, the ongoing investigation of Saraki has become a tool to be used for the advancement of their cause; the plan is for the EFCC to arrest Saraki and keep him out of circulation shortly before the inauguration of the National Assembly and the election of the principal officers.

“This was the reason the commission grilled the National Assembly clerk and other officials about the finances of the Assembly and other issues relating to the procedure for the election of the leaders of the 9th Assembly.”

Another source noted that with Saraki out of the way, the plot against Lawan by other contenders to the Senate Presidency, like the former Senate leader, Senator Ali Ndume, and Senator Danjuma Goje, could easily be overwhelmed by pro-Lawan senators backed by the ruling party.

Our correspondent further gathered that the EFCC had been dragged into the Senate presidency race by top party and government officials who did not want to leave anything to chance.

The source noted, “The APC and top government officials have been having sleepless nights over the likelihood of Saraki (playing the) midwife and influencing the election of his successor because they fear he may continue to control happenings within the Senate, which may not augur well for the (Muhammadu) Buhari administration.

“This is why the APC Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole and other party chiefs are not taking the issue of the emergence of the new principal officers with levity and they are ready to do anything to get their candidates into office.”

Apart from checking Saraki, it was also gathered that senators who voted against Lawan may face serious consequences for their action as the anti-graft agency was poised to go after them.

Should Lawan fail to clinch the position, Saturday PUNCH learnt that rebellious senators who have pending cases before anti-graft agencies would have their case files dusted up.

“Senators who vote for Lawan’s opponent will not find it easy after the NASS inauguration because their business deals, constituency projects and other activities will be subjected to clinical investigations and we all know what this may mean for some of them,” another senior official revealed.

When contacted, the National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, Mr Kola Ologbondiyan, said he would not respond to speculations about a possible arrest of the outgoing Senate President.

He said, “I will not respond to speculations on this matter. I do know the Senate has its rules and the election of principal officers is done in accordance with these rules.”

But the acting EFCC spokesman, Tony Orilade,

said the commission had no interest in the election of principal officers of the National Assembly. He said in line with its mandate, it was only interested in persons who had questions to answer with regards to the mismanagement of public funds.

He cautioned politicians against “dragging the EFCC into the National Assembly’s internal affairs,” stressing that the anti-agency was not a political organisation.

He stated, “Like the EFCC Chairman, Ibrahim Magu, said, our investigation of any citizen is not personal and we are not after anybody. We invite or arrest people who have committed a crime, people who are corrupt. If you are not corrupt, we can’t arrest or detain you.”

Asked about the reported interrogation of Mohammed Sani-Omolori-led National Assembly management, including the Clerk of the Senate, Nelson Ayewoh, and his counterpart in the House of Representatives, Patrick Giwa, Orilade said he did not have information about it.

Kwara computing Saraki’s earnings

Meanwhile, the Kwara State Government has yet to respond to the letter from the EFCC demanding details of Saraki’s earnings as the governor of the state.

It was gathered that the government was taking its time to compile Saraki’s earnings for the eight years he spent as the Kwara State helmsman.

The Commission, as part of investigation into Saraki’s stewardship in the Senate and his tenure as Kwara State Governor, wrote to the Kwara State Government for details of his emoluments and other benefits.

The commission in a statement said it had indicting evidence and documents against Saraki, stressing that the probe was in the public interest.

The agency asked Saraki not to fret over the investigation into his earnings as governor and his stewardship in the Senate, “so long as he has no skeletons in his cupboard.”

APC accuses PDP of fuelling crisis

The All Progressives Congress has accused the Peoples Democratic Party of being behind allegation that it is using the EFCC to witch-hunt perceived enemies.

The ruling party said the allegation was an indication the opposition party was running from its sordid past.

In a statement on Friday, the APC National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, said the party was “confused and desperate.”

“They created the EFCC and used it to witch-hunt anyone that was not in their good book. That is because they don’t believe in building institutions. If they had allowed government institutions freehand like the APC is doing, there wouldn’t have been the need for them (the PDP) to be crying wolf now.

“Strong institutions would protect everyone and enshrined social justice. PDP made this impossible. They compromised institutions and undermined the statutes that give our institutions mandates.

“They bastardised institutions and expect everybody to be like them. The EFCC is a public institution and should be allowed to do its job. The clerk of the National Assembly is a public officer and could be quizzed in his official capacity if he is suspected to have breached the law. He has the right to defence. If he feels his rights have been infringed upon, he can seek redress in court.”

He added, “The way the opposition is crying wolf about his invitation and investigation makes one wonder if he is a member of their political party. It is only the guilty that are afraid.

Presidency declines comment

In reaction to the development, the Presidency on Friday avoided making comments on the ongoing investigation of the Clerk to the National Assembly, Mr Mohammed Sani-Omolori, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

However, a State House source said the Presidency would only comment on such a matter if there was evidence of President Muhammadu Buhari’s involvement.

On Friday, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Garba Shehu, declined to speak on the issue on the grounds that he was out of the country to Saudi Arabia and not in a position to speak.

But, a presidential source at the State House in Abuja told Saturday PUNCH no official of the Presidency would comment on a matter that had no proof linking Buhari to it.

The source stated, “When you say the Presidency, the Presidency is very large. Who will speak for the Presidency in this case?

“If they had mentioned President Muhammadu Buhari in name, that he was involved, then you can expect a reaction from his office.

“That is as far as I am concerned. We will come in whenever they say it is the President directly.”

The source further said the EFCC should be asked where it got it alleged directive to probe the National Assembly clerks.

“Why don’t you speak to the EFCC? Who gave the EFCC directive? Ask the EFCC to tell you”, the source added.

Quote:Tom Awhana, the former Head of Chambers for the Law Office of Mr. Mogbeyi Sagay, a late Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) was on arraigned on Friday at an Ikeja Special Offences Court for stealing N188.7 million belonging to the law firm of the late senior lawyer. 

Awhana was arraigned alongside Paul Okoro a former lawyer in the law firm who is also accused by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of stealing N3.6million from the firm. 

Awhana and Okoro pleaded not guilty to a joint charge of conspiracy to steal.

Okoro denied the charge of stealing while Awhana pleaded not guilty to a 16-count charge of stealing. 

According to the EFCC, Awhana was the Head of Chambers of the law firm of Mogbeyi Sagay and Co. from 2010 to 2018. 

Sagay his Principal, died in 2012.

He was made signatory to the law firm's Zenith Bank Account alongside three administrators of the late SAN's estate. 

It was allegedly mandated that three persons out of the four administrators can withdraw from the bank account with the cheque booklet of the Zenith Bank account in Awhana's possession. 

The prosecution said that unknown to the staff of the firm, other administrators and the consultant to the law firm, Awhana opened other secret bank accounts in the name of Mogbeyi Sagay (SAN) and Co. in FCMB, Union Bank and Heritage Bank Plc. 

The first defendant (Awhana) is alleged to have diverted drawn cheques into those secret accounts. He is also alleged to have from 2012 to 2017, stolen a total of N188.7 million belonging to Mogbeyi Sagay (SAN) and Co. 

Okoro, the second defendant, is alleged by the prosecution to have from Oct. 14, 2012 to June 28 2013, stole N3.6 million belonging to the law firm. 

According to the EFCC, the offences contravene Sections 287 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos 2015.

Following the plea of the defendants, Mr. Rotimi Oyedepo, the lead prosecuting counsel for the anti-graft agency, requested for a trial date adding that the court should impose stiff bail conditions on the lawyers. 

"I have discussed with my learned friends, I will leave it to my lordship to impose bail conditions that will make the defendants available in court throughout this trial," Oyedepo said. 

Ms. Oluwaseun Olusiyi, the defence counsel to Awhana, via a bail application dated May 17 asked the court to grant him bail in self recognisance. 

"The first defendant is a legal practitioner of high repute and negotiations towards an amicable resolution are underway with the complainant. He was the Head of Chambers of the firm," Olusiyi said. 

Mr. K. U Ani, the counsel to Okoro the second defendant in his bail application dated May 17 also asked the court to grant him bail on self recognisance. 

"The second defendant has fractured his legs and is depending on medical treatment. I ask that ypu grant him bail on self recognisance My Lord," he said. 

Justice Mojisola Dada in a short ruling noted that settlement talks were ongoing between the complainant and the defendants. 

She ordered that as a bail condition, Awhana and Okoro should submit their international passports to the court. 

"The defendants shall however submit their international passports pending the determination of this suit. 

"They shall be remanded in prison custody till the perfection of their bail condition. This case is adjourned until June 4 for trial," she said.

Quote:The Central Bank of Nigeria sold a whopping $36.6 billion in forex in 2018 according to a report released during the week on its website. This compares to $15.8 billion sold in 2017, a whopping 130% rise.

The report, 2018 Activity report, is aimed at “informing the public of the measures taken by the Department to implement the decisions of the CBN and its Monetary Policy Committee towards the achievement of price and financial system stability.”

Key numbers: The CBN explained the breakdown of the $36.6 billion as $25.6 billion for spot sales and $11 billion in forward transactions.

• Included in the spot sale was $8.2 billion sold in the I&E window.

• The I&E window is where investors come to buy and sell forex and its the closest to a market with an exchange rate that floats.

• Total sales in 2017 were $15.8 billion lower than spot sales recorded in 2018. The bank reported that spot sales for 2017 were just $3.4 billion compared to $25.6 billion in 2018 alone.

• Net sales (sum of forex sold and bought by the CBN) was $17.8 billion in 2018 compared to $9.7 billion in 2017

Numbers explained: The higher sales recorded in 2018 suggest there was more demand for forex in 2018 compared to 2017. Thus, to keep the exchange rate stable and speculators at bay, the CBN had to increase its defense of the naira by selling more dollars. This is further buttressed by the more than 8 folds increase in spot sales with most of it targeted at the I&E window where foreign investors trade.

By burning through reserves, the CBN sacrifices forex savings for naira stability hoping that this will help drive down the inflation rate. Critics believe this might be work in the short term but it is detrimental in the long run when we factor in the opportunity cost of burning out reserves.

CBN’s explanation: “The increased volume of transactions in 2018 was attributable largely to the Bank’s foreign exchange policy and its management, coupled with the improvement in the levels of foreign reserves during the year.”

The exchange rate debacle: Most analysts we have spoken to believe the exchange rate is somewhat overvalued at N365. They point to frequent interventions in the FX market by the CBN as one of such artificial dynamics that inhibits price discovery. The more CBN intervenes to stifle demand the better the chances of the naira holding sway at its current price.

The upshots: Now that the presidential elections are over and the Central Bank Governor guaranteed another term of 5 years, the focus will not be channeled at how the CBN plans to manage the exchange rate. Will it be more of the same or a change of course. Rumours that the CBN might devalue something this year will likely persist. Some believe it is just a matter of time particularly if oil price fails to recover past the $70 mark.

Photo: Ogun police arrest man for allegedly killing his father






The Ogun state police command have arrested Babatunde Olagesin pictured above for allegedly killing his father, Taiwo Olagesin, with a cutlass following a disgreement at their residence in the Ijoko area of Ogun state on Monday May 6th.
 
According to reports, trouble started when Babatunde told his father that he was on his way out to Oshodi at about 6am on the said day, The father prevented him from leaving the house, insisting they had to go somewhere together. Taiwo locked up the doors leading outside the premises to keep his son inside. An argument ensued and both father and son started fighting. This led to Taiwo pulling out a cutlass to scare his son who in a bid to collect the cutlass from his father, allegedly used it to cut open his father in the stomach.
 
It was gathered that neigbours alerted the police from the Agbado division to the incident and Babatunde was arrested.
 
Confirming the incident, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the case would soon be charged to court.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said it would only continue to recognize and relate with Mr. Omoyele Sowore as the substantive National Chairman of the African Action Congress (AAC).
 
INEC's decision comes five days after one Mazi Okwy read a resolution of suspension to journalists in Abuja while installing the expelled secretary of the party, Leonard Ezenwa as acting party chairman.
 
The electoral body in a statement signed by Rose Oriaran-Anthony, secretary to the commission on Friday said:

Quote:"The commission after reviewing the content of the letter has established the following. There is no documentary evidence that a meeting of the AAC National Executive Committee (NEC) was convened by the National Chairman as required by Chapter 9 Section 59(a) of the Constitution of AAC.  
"The party did not provide a 21-day notice of the NEC meeting as required by Section85(1) of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended). There are no minutes or evidence of attendance of the AAC National Executive Committee meeting where the National Chairman and eight (8) others were purportedly suspended. Accordingly, the Commission shall continue to recognize and relate with Mr. Sowore Omoyele as the substantive national Chairman of the African Action Congress."

The troubles of the outgoing administration of Rochas Okorocha in Imo State are far from over as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), yesterday, said that it is investigating a case of money laundering against it during the last governorship election in the state.

EFCC’s zonal head for South East, Usman Imam during a briefing disclosed how their operatives, acting on tip-offs, blocked accounts belonging to the state government in the build-up to the election.

He spoke while highlighting the activities of the zone in the first quarter of the year, Imam said their timely intervention saved the state over N5bn that would have been deployed for vote buying by the Okorocha’s administration.

He revealed that about N8bn from the Paris Club Refund bailout meant for payment of workers’ salaries was warehoused by the government, only to begin frittering it on the eve of the election for phoney reasons, prompting the anti-graft agency to block the accounts.

“About N7.9bn is what had been blocked, although with pressure, subsequently, about N2.5bn was released for salaries. On the whole, we have over N5bn of those funds blocked; we are following up to see what actually happened. Honestly, what we discovered was that within two days, N700m was withdrawn in cash; N200m on the first day and N500m on the second day and all these monies were disbursed in a manner that was honestly unpalatable. Distribution to school teachers; I don’t know, schools that you were not funding and you wake up on the eve of the election and withdrew N500m cash and start distributing N1000 each or so to teachers. Whatever that means, I don’t know.

“When we came in, we were able to save about seventy something millions of the funds that we discovered were not disbursed, we also blocked it. People are still answering questions as to who asked them to move those monies, monies that were blocked at the banks.

“The sad story about this was that these monies were the intervention funds; the bailout funds that the Federal Government released to states to pay salaries when they were having problems paying salaries. They didn’t utilize that money to pay the salaries; they warehoused it and kept it until the election period, they started attempting to draw down the money. Whatever happens, we have saved over N5bn of that money, as we talk, two weeks to handover. Probably, the next government would have that money to use it better. There are a lot of other general investigations going on in Imo right now,” he stated.


He said the directive by EFCC Acting Chairman, Ibrahim Magu for proper monitoring to forestall money laundering during the election actually paid off.

He also said that the zone had in the course of investigations from January till date, recovered the sum of N102, 322, 630; and USD6, 450.

In addition, he stated that investigations were on to ascertain whether the 30 different brands of cars they seized were actually proceeds of crime or not.

The zonal head who said they received a total of 557 petitions in the period under review noted that 127 of them were approved and under investigation, while 230 were rejected on the grounds of being civil in nature, falling under other agencies’ mandates or already in court.

He announced that the commission has recorded 28 convictions this year as against 14 in 2018, adding that 45 of the cases were fully investigated and suspects charged to various courts in the region.

However, the EFCC is contending with 16 civil suits emanating from the zone, he added.

19 year old arrested for killing his 17-year-old friend over N200 in Ogun (photos)






A 19-year-old apprentice welder in the Agbado area of the state, Kehinde Adeoye(right), has been arrested by men of the Ogun state Police Command for the murder of his friend, Lukman Olawunmi(left), aged 17.
 
According to reports, Kehinde and Lukman have been friends for many years and were both learning how to make cans at different shops. Recently, an unidentified man had come to Lukman's shop to request that he repaired his umbrella for him. Lukman decided to take his umbrella to his friend Kehinde who knew how to fix Umbrellas. Kehinde billed him N200 which Lukman gave to him and he was asked to come the following day to pick it up.
 
The next day, Lukman went to pick up the Umbrella as promised but was surprised that Kehinde had not fixed it. An argument ensued between them which soon degenerated into a fight. Kehinde was alleged to have slapped Lukman with a 'mysterious ring', causing Lukman to slump. He was rushed to the hospital immediately where he was certified dead on arrival.
 
The matter was immediately reported at the Agbado Police Station and Kehinde was arrested.
 
When interrogated, Kehinde denied attacking his friend with any mysterious ring.

Quote:“We were close friends and we usually introduced customers to each other. The umbrella was the devil that caused all this. When I could not repair the umbrella, he came to our shop to collect it and the N200 he gave me. I told him to be patient and I promised to give him the money and the umbrella later that evening. He slapped me and I slapped him back. He fell and I poured water on him. I was the one who rushed him to hospital. I did not use anything to hit him. We were not fighting. We were playing.” he said

First is clarity; clarity of the message that you preach. You must understand the message of Christ, first for yourself, because you can’t communicate to someone else something you don’t understand. You can’t bless someone else with something that you haven’t been blessed with. You can only give what you have; and so, a good understanding of the Gospel is imperative.

Secondly, conviction; there has to be absolute conviction in your spirit about Christ and the salvation that He brought for the whole world. You must become fully persuaded of His message, of His person, and of His mission.

The Apostle Paul in Romans 1:16 expressed a profound note of conviction. He said, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth….” His persuasion was absolute: there’s no other way for salvation except Jesus Christ! There’re no options.

He also said, “…for necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel!” (1 Corinthians 9:16). You can only make such a statement when you’re fully persuaded; when you know without an iota of doubt that the only way to life and for life is Jesus Christ, who is Himself LIFE.
Thirdly, possession! As a soul winner, you must have full possession of truth. You may be convinced of something, but it’s not enough. That truth must become yours.


The Lord Jesus said in John 6:47, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.” The one who believes is a possessor. You must be in possession of the truth that, as a soul winner, you have eternal life, and that’s what you’re dispensing to others. You’re “living” eternal life now.
Arm yourself with these truths as you go about your soul-winning work, and you’ll be a more effective minister of reconciliation.

PRAYER

Holy Father, thank you for equipping me with this important information on how to be a successful soul winner. I receive your instructions with meekness, and declare that my soul-winning efforts are taken to a new and higher level of glory, success and productivity, as I put your Word to work, in Jesus’ Name. A Nigerian Youtuber and Domestic Violence advocate, Morolake Hycinthia, has been arrested for fraud in the U.S.

The 24-year-old suspect was picked up Utah on May 4, 2019. She is currently being held for possessing another person’s identity, identity fraud, knowingly using false financial information. Her bond has been set for $20,000 for one of the charges.

The Abuja Zonal office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Friday, May 17, 2019 arrested ten suspected internet fraudsters. They are Habib Adeyemi, Lawal Kehinde, Victory Jemibor, Solomon Enuneke, Ubgehi Joshua and Tosan Ogbe. Others are Onajite Ejovwo, Anthony Igbonoeme, Tunde Azeez and Adeyemi Habib.

The operatives swung into action following intelligence report on their activities.

Some of the items recovered from them were two (2) exotic cars Six (6) laptops, 10 smart phones and 1 international passport.

The suspects will be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Advance Fee Fraud Section, Abuja Headquarters in collaboration with men from the Benin Zonal Office in an operation on Friday 17, 2019 arrested 22 suspected internet fraudsters during an early morning raid at Sapele, Delta State.

Working on intelligence reports, the suspects, who are between the ages of 18 to 30 years, were smoked out from their hideout in an early morning operation.

A day earlier, the operatives from Abuja had arrested two suspected internet fraudster in Ughelli, Delta State.

Items recovered from the suspects include lap top computers, iPhones, phones, ATM cards and three exotic vehicles. The cars are Benz C350, Benz ML 350 and Chrysler 300.

The raid on the internet fraudsters is one in the series by operatives of the Commission in line with the directive of the acting Executive Chairman of the Commission, Ibrahim Magu to rid the entire country of internet fraud and cyber crime.

The suspects have made useful statements and will be charged to court as soon investigations are completed.

Court orders Kenya’s ex-president, Arap Moi to pay $10.05m fine for seizing 53 acres of land belonging to widow



 



A court in Kenya has ordered former President Daniel arap Moi to pay 1.06bn shillings ($10.5m; £8.2m) in compensation to a widow for illegally seizing her land.  
 
President Moi transferred to himself 53 acres of land belonging to widow Susan Cheburet Chelugui, the judge ruled. The land was illegally grabbed 36 years ago but only transferred to Mr Moi's name in 2007. 
 
Chelugui's husband Noah Chelugui was a local chief during Mr Moi's rule. The former president, who remains Kenya's longest-serving leader, was accused by Ms Chelugui and her son David Chelugui of transferring their family land into his name two years after Ms Chelugui's husband passed away.
 
Moi is then said to have sold the land to Rai Plywood Limited, a timber firm, the BBC's Mercy Juma reports from Nairobi. Rai Plywood Limited told the judge that it had bought the land from Moi in 2007 after thorough legal checks.  
 
However, Moi was unable to provide the court any proof of how he came to possess the land, our correspondent says. Judge Anthony Ombwayo said Mr Moi had behaved in a way that was "unconstitutional, irregular, unprocedural" and "tainted".  
 
Mr Moi became Kenya's second president in 1978 and served until 2002.

Embattled CJN, Walter Onnoghen loses again at the Supreme Court



 



The Supreme Court has struck out an application by the Cross River State Government challenging the suspension of Justice Walter Onnoghen as the Chief Justice of Nigeria.  
 
The court on Friday said it lacked jurisdiction to entertain the matter and consequently dismissed the application.
 
Justice Onnoghen was suspended in January, by an order of the Code of Conduct Tribunal. Following his suspension, the Cross Rivers State Government approached the Supreme Court asking it to invoke section 232 (1) of the constitution to assume original jurisdiction on the matter, citing violations of the constitutional provisions in the suspension.  
 
But in its lead judgement, the Supreme Court agreed with the submissions of the Federal Government that it lacked jurisdiction to entertain the suit. However, in a dissenting judgement, Justice Mary Odili held that the suspension did not follow laid down procedure as stipulated by law, insisting that the Supreme Court has jurisdiction to entertain the matter.

Court remands 2 businessmen for alleged sale of substandard gas cylinders

AFederal High Court in Lagos has remanded two businessmen, Emmanuel Anthony Nnan and John Paul Ejike in prison custody over alleged importation and sale of substandard gas cylinders.
The duo were remanded in prison after their arraignment alongside their company – Star Master Electrical Co. Ltd by the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON).


The defendants were arraigned before Justice Saliu Saidu on Monday, May 13,2019 on a five count charge and had pleaded not guilty to the charges.
They are to remain in custody pending the perfection of the N50 million bail granted them by the court.


The court consequently adjourned until June 18,2019 for their trial and ordered their remand in prison custody pending the perfection of their bail terms.
The Prosecutor, Mr Adeleke Olofindare alleged that the defendants had committed the offences of forgery, importation and sale of substandard gas cylinder which contravene the SON Act.


A part of the charge read: ” That you Emmanuel Anthony Nnan, of Plot 18 32D, House 1 close 3rd Avenue Festac Town, Lagos, John Paul Ejike of 50 Bornu Crescent, Apapa, Lagos and Star Master Electrical Co. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ilorin Zonal Office  has arrested a 31-year-old Islamic scholar/herbalist, Jamiu Isiaka for impersonating  the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, (NNPC) Dr Maikanti Baru and the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina among other prominent citizens.

The suspect with others who are still at large allegedly used the names of the senior government officials to scam a South Korean national, Keun Sig Kim, under pretence of getting him an NNPC license that would enable him purchase a company.

The petitioner had paid over N30million (Thirty Million Naira) into the suspect's account as fee to get the license.

According to him "I transferred $4,285.071 (Four Thousand, Two Hundred and Eighty-five United States Dollars, Seventy-one cents) to the United Bank of Africa, account number 2107575870 in the name of one Jamiu Isiaka, an associate of Mr Shola Adeshina. It is noteworthy that this account particulars have been provided severally for me to make transfer to."

Isiaka, during interrogation with EFCC officials, claimed that he used the money to perform sacrifice on behalf of the petitioner.

He claimed to have bought a vulture, elephant’s skin, elephant’s intestine, skull of a lion, liver of gorilla, among others.

The suspect will soon be arraigned in court while efforts are ongoing to nab the accomplices at larger.

A Marange man killed his wife in cold blood after catching her pants down having quality time with another man in the bushes last Tuesday.

Manicaland police spokesperson Inspector Tavhiringwa Kakohwa confirmed the death of Rosemary Muchangidze (37) of Marahwa village, Chief Marange who was fatally assaulted by husband Oliver Mutafi (35) all over her body until she died.

Circumstances were that on May 7 at around 7pm Muchangidze misled their children into believing that they were retiring to bed in separate rooms of the same house and sneaked out of the house to meet her lover at a bushy area about 50 metres from her home.

On the same day at around 10pm Mutafi arrived home and saw Muchangidze with Novel Chada, a diamond dealer in the bushy area. Mutafi severely assaulted his wife several times all over her body with a hard object causing serious injuries while Chada ran away.

Muchangidze screamed for help alerting neighbours, who rushed to the scene to investigate. Upon their arrival, they saw Mutafi assaulting Muchangidza.

Muchangidze had been seriously injured and was bleeding from the forehead.

Mutafi stopped assaulting her and ordered her to tell those gathered the reason why he was assaulting her.

She stated that her husband found her with Chada her boyfriend.

“As Mutafi started moving away, his wife stated that she had been badly injured and Mutafi replied saying that is what a prostitute deserves. Mutafi then went to his home where he broke into the house and took his wife’s money and went away,’’ said Insp Kakohwa.

On the same night Mutafi took his Nissan Caravan with vehicle registration number ADJ7939 from the driver Admire Mutsago who resides in the same village but left it about 500 metres from Mutsago’s home after it got stuck in the sand along the Mutsago-Chiadzwa road.

Neighbours noted that Muchangidze was showing no sign of life and alerted other villagers who rushed to Marange Police station where a report was made.

“Muchangidze sustained a cut on the chin, bruised and blood stained face, swollen left eye, bruises on the left hand, swollen left palm bruises on the left fingers, bruises on both breasts, at the back, on both thighs and buttocks and she had three deep cuts on the neck.

“Mutafi is still at large and investigations are in progress.

“Mutafi was no longer regularly visiting her wife at their home as he sometimes slept at his shop as the couple was having marital problems. The couple was customarily married and had two children. Sometime in November last year, they had a domestic dispute resulting in the claiming of RTGS$200 per month as maintenance for the two minor children. Muchangidze further filed an application to share their matrimonial property at Mutare Civil Court in February 2019 and the case is still pending,” said Insp Kakohwa.

Taiwan becomes the first Asian country to approve a bill legalizing same-sex marriage



 



Lawmakers in Taiwan have approved a bill legalizing same-sex marriage in a landmark decision that makes the self-ruled island the first place in Asia to pass gay marriage legislation.  
 
The vote came almost two years after the island's Constitutional Court ruled that the existing law; which said marriage was between a man and a woman was unconstitutional. The panel of judges gave the island's parliament two years to amend or enact new laws.
 
On Friday, only a week off the two-year deadline lawmakers in Taiwan's Legislative Yuan passed a bill making same-sex marriage a reality and it will go into effect on May 24.
 
Tens of thousands of people braved pouring rain Friday to demonstrate in favor of same-sex marriage outside the parliament, where lawmakers were voting on three draft bills. The successful Cabinet bill was backed by LGBTQ groups, despite the fact it creates a law different to straight marriage.
 
For instance, under Cabinet's bill, a Taiwanese person could not marry foreigners from countries where same-sex marriage is not legal. Thousands turned of gay rights activists, many bearing umbrellas, rainbow flags and rainbow placards, gathered in heavy rain in the capital Taipei in support of marriage equality.
 
Although the island has a large gay community and its annual gay pride parade is the biggest in Asia, the issue of marriage equality has divided Taiwanese society. In a controversial referendum in November last year, 67% voted to reject same-sex marriage.

Federal High Court declares the defection of Saraki, Dogara, 51 others in the National Assembly to other political parties as unlawful




 
The Federal High Court has declared as unlawful the defection of 53 lawmakers in the National Assembly to other political parties.  
 
Delivering the judgement today, Justice Okon Abang held that based on the judgement of the Supreme Court, which gave reasons that would allow for defection, the lawmakers did not meet that requirement.
 
The judgement followed a suit filed by the Legal Defence Assistance Project (LEDAP), challenging the defection of the Senate President Dr Bukola Saraki, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara and 51 other lawmakers and Senator Godswill Akpabio.  
 
LEDAP had asked the court to order the lawmakers to vacate their seats in the National Assembly and return all salaries and allowances earned since their defection, arguing that the lawmakers defected from their political parties for selfish reasons other than division in their parties as prescribed by law.
 
But in the case of Senator Godswill Akpabio, Justice Abang held that he did not violate the law because he neither decamped nor defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) with the facts before the court.  
 
The court had on Monday, granted leave to the senator to file an application challenging the suit by LEDAP, saying that there is no evidence before it that he was personally served, since the suit is not a class act against the Senate.

Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) on Friday said President Muhammadu Buhari doesn’t deserve to be sworn in for another term as Nigerian President.

In his new broadcast, Kanu called Buhari an impostor and a deceptive leader.
He cited the controversial issue of Buhari’s West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) certificate, saying the president never presented it before he was first elected.

Kanu said: “Jubril/Buhari has no basis to present himself to be sworn in on the 29th. That was why the impostor said education is no longer important.
“If truly no man is above the law and the Constitution of the land is supreme. If the constitution is supreme and is meant to guide the conduct of civilised men within a specifically defined geo-political area, then let me remind all the sophisticated morons in Nigeria that their constitution says every contender for the presidency must present a verifiable school certificate (WAEC) which neither the dead Buhari had nor his replacement Jubril ever did.

“Those that consider themselves as citizens of southern Nigeria has been butchered into fear and docility. I weep for the cowards but its their country, they can do whatever they like with it. Nigerians and certain individuals with Biafran names love slavery, we in IPOB don’t.

“How dumb are Nigerians and their miserable law enforcement and judiciary. When written laws are made not to apply differently to a section of populace like the Fulani, in the instance of Nigeria, then everybody is a fool. FG Urged to Reduce Taxes, Cost of Aviation Fuel
                               
Nigerian airlines have called on the federal government to review its tax policy for the sector as well as the cost of aviation fuel, in order to reduce cost of flight operations and ensure they remain in business.

The operators said many airlines that went under in the last few years were due to high cost of operation, including high taxes and high cost of aviation fuel.


The airlines said cost of flight tickets would also reduce if they pay less taxes and spend less on aviation fuel, which is known as Jet A1, so that more Nigerians can travel by air, especially now road travel is fraught with insecurity. In addition, the operators said they spend huge resources on aviation fuel because of its arbitrary costs, which according to them does not reflect the cost of crude oil, but negatively affect long-term planning by the airlines.

Speaking on behalf of the airlines, the CEO of Aero Contractors, Captain Ado Sanusi, said there was need for government to review its policy on aviation fuel, noting that although supply was deregulated, the government could take actions to ensure that supply is regular and prices lower than what obtains currently.

“The first government intervention to reduce cost of operation should be in the supply of fuel, which over the years government has been striving to bring the prices down.

“This is critical because about 40 per cent of the cost of operation is almost on fuel, Jet A1. So we can look at it and ensure that the fluctuation in the prices is not much.

“Look at the situation now. The prices go from N198 to 220 per litre. So if we can have a constant supply of Jet A1 at constant price, airlines will know how to plan their budget and how they can bring down the cost of ticket based on the lower cost of aviation fuel,” Sanusi said.
He noted that in most countries the price of Jet A1 is, “very dependent on the price of crude oil but in Nigeria it is dependent on the landing cost of imported product.”

The Aero CEO said crude oil price could be steady for the next six months, but Jet A1 price would be fluctuating, stressing the need to streamline prices.

He said although Jet A1 had been deregulated, the government could persuade the importers to ensure constant supply of the product or government could be importing the product and selling to marketers.
Another factor that has influenced the high price of tickets, the airlines said, was the high taxes operators pay, so they urged government to tackle the problem of multiple taxation.

“Government has done very well in the area of taxes by reducing some and looking at removing VAT. I hope it has done that already. But the most important thing government should tackle is multiple taxation.
“The federal government should look at it. The last time they reviewed taxes in aviation was a very long time ago and I think they should look at it and reflect the reality on ground.

“This is because if they continue to heavily tax the airlines it will continue to impact on their finances and you see that some of them are dying. There is something definitely wrong somewhere.
“High taxation is one of the root causes of the reason our airlines are dying; so government can help to save the airlines by reviewing downwards the taxation levied on them.”

Another factor he said that has effect on the cost of flight operation was bird strike and non-clearing of runways, which gives rise to incidents that lead to high maintenance cost.
He pointed out that frequent bird strikes destroy aircraft engine and when the runway is not swept regularly objects destroy aircraft tyres.

According to him, replacing these engines and tyres cost a lot of money to the airlines, which means they have to increase price of tickets in order to generate money to pay for spares replacement and general maintenance.

“If, for example, the runway is not swept regularly and the birds are not controlled and the aircraft suffer from bird strike and objects on the runway destroy the aircraft wheels, these will increase maintenance cost and eventually affect the price of the tickets.
“This is because the moment I have increased my cost I have to increase my revenue. Otherwise, the airline’s finances will be affected. So the airport management company has to sweep the tarmac and the runway, chase the birds away so that the aircraft wheels do not suffer damage and the engine does not pick birds.

“These are the things that will lower the airline’s cost. When the cost of operation is lowered, the airline will definitely lower the cost of its tickets,” Sanusi added.

NYSC Kogi State Co-ordinator Dies In Accident
 
 
                             
The National Youth service Corps management just lost a dear mother, Mrs. O.O Ahile the state Coordinator of NYSC in Kogi state to a fatal car accident.

She died in a Ghastly Motor accident on Lafia – MKD Road. This is really a great loss that can never be recovered because the woman is really a mother. Everybody loves her and she has not been acting as a state coordinator alone, she has been acting as a mother.

Corp members serving in Kogi and ex corpers who knew her will really miss her because shes a woman many Corpers has taken to be their godmother.

Some say she makes camp home away from home because of her motherly interaction with them. Some refer to her as the “The most humble Mama ever”.

Someone said “much love for you Mama Mia. Your Passion and Leadership is an inspiration to many of us.” And many other good things are said about her. We will all miss her.

672 Nigerian Children Lost Their Lives To 2017 Bombing Says Report

 
 
                        
Report revealed that no fewer than 672 children were killed in Nigeria as a result of bomb explosions in 2017, especially by the Boko Haram insurgents in the North-East region of the country.

The report was released by Save the Children, a non-governmental organisation, noting that Nigeria was the fourth deadliest country with child casualties resulting from explosions, after Afghanistan, Yemen and Syria respectively.
The 24 pages report discusses the impact of explosive weapons on children in conflict.

The report read in part, " Across five of the deadliest conflicts for children in 2017, Afghanistan, Yemen, Syria, Nigeria and Iraq, we can see that of the 7,364 children killed or maimed in conflict in 2017, at least 5,322 were linked to explosions. Armed conflicts around the world are exacting a devastating toll on children. In 2017, nearly a fifth of all children were living close to conflict-with 142 million children living near areas of intense fighting. In the world's worst modern conflicts, children are exposed to explosive weapons-rockets, mortars, grenades, mines and improvised explosive devices..

" In Afghanistan, 2,216 were killed or maimed in explosions out of a total 3,179, in Yemen, 814 were killed out of a total 1,316, and Syria, 1,058 out of a total 1,271. In Nigeria, 672 children were killed out of a total 881 children, who represent 76 percent"

" Our key findings include; children are more likely to die following explosion injuries than adults. Two, children re overwhelmingly likely to experience head injuries which is a significant cause of death in young children"

Missing pregnant teen is found dead with her baby cut off from her body




 
A missing pregnant woman was found murdered and had her baby cut from her womb after she went to the home of a woman who offered to give her baby things.
 
Marlen Ochoa-Lopez, 19, was nine months pregnant and already the mother of a 3-year-old. She went missing after she went to a home in Chicago in response to a Facebook post about free baby clothes.
 
It all began after Marlen took to a Facebook page called Help A Sister Out to ask for help because she couldn't afford things for her baby.
 
She wrote at the time: "Hello ladies, I’m due May 10 and I still need a ton of things for my son,”she wrote on March 5.  Due to the fact that I’m in school and can’t work at the moment, I can’t afford to buy the rest of the things since I’m short on cash right now."
 
A woman reached out, offering baby things and she went to the woman's home to collect the things. She never returned.
 
"We believe that she was murdered and we believe that the baby [was] forcibly removed following that murder," police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said.
 
The crime was discovered after a woman claimed that she had just given birth on the same day that Marlen went missing. Paramedics went to the home where the woman claimed she had given birth and they found the boy. However, DNA tests showed that the baby belonged to Marlen. The baby boy is currently in critical condition at the hospital.
 
Marlen's body was recovered on Tuesday in a dustbin in the backyard where the woman who offered her free baby things lives. She had been strangled with a cable and her child had been cut out from her body.
 
Investigators also found bleach and cleaning agents in the house, along with burned clothes and blood on the floors of the living room, bathroom and hallway.
 
So far, three people have been charged in relation to the crime. Mother and daughter, Clarisa Figueroa, 46, and Desiree Figueroa, 24, have been charged. Piotr Bobak, 40, the mother’s boyfriend has also been charged with the concealment of a murder.
 
Clarisa had gone on Facebook to share a Gofundme plea asking for donations for the baby. In the Gofundme she created, she claimed the baby was hers. She also had a nursery in her home ready for the child, meaning she had planned this for a long time. Also pointing to the fact that this was premeditated was that her boyfriend had also posted a fake ultra sound picture on his social media.
 

 
Marlen's husband, Yovani Lopez appeared tearful as he spoke to reporters about his wife's death saying: "They can’t compare to the pain we’re suffering. They don’t know that pain we’re going through. They don’t know anything about it.
 
"It’s very painful. Very painful to see your wife with whom you lived with four years and then see her with her eyes closed. 
 
"I just don’t know… I don’t know. I don’t know why these horrible people did this. She didn’t do anything to them she was a good person. 
 
"Knowing that she had a family, a three-year-old son, I can’t believe it. This is very hard."

The Nigerian government on Thursday gave an update on the implementation of the new National Minimum Wage.

Mrs Zainab Usman, the Minister of Finance, said that the financial implications had been worked out by the Presidential Committee set up and that the report had been submitted to the president.

She said this on Thursday in Abuja, while addressing a news conference on the state of the Nigerian economy.

“We have looked at the report and what we are working on now is how we can finance it”, NAN quoted her as saying.

“Apart from the increase of the minimum wage from N18, 000 to N30, 000, there is also consequential adjustment that we have to negotiate with the labour unions.

“The total implication of that would be worked out only after the negotiations and that would involve determining how much increase every other staff that is above the minimum wage would get.


“It could be a flat amount or a proportion, but the other aspect that is clear is that there would be an increase for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) as well because by the Act they should earn at least the minimum wage and the NYSC also has to increase to that N30, 000.

“So, because we have not done the negotiation with labour, I cannot give you the details of what we are projecting because it is simply on projections, at the end of the day, it is what we agree with labour that will be the amount that is due.”

On the issue of debt increase from N12.2 trillion to N23.0 trillion, Usman said it was by design.

Addressing newsmen in Gusau, the state capital, Comrade Lukman Majidadi, chairman of the group, popularly known as the 1,400 Civil Servants Forum, said they did not beg the government to employ them, stressing that the governor gave official directives to the State Civil Service Commission to employ graduates into the state’s civil service, which the commission under Alhaji Ahmad Zabarma, obliged.
He maintained that 9,000 applicants went into the contest of which only 1,400 graduates were successful after the screening.

He said that the 1,400 graduates were issued with notification of appointment to various MDAs and posted to various departments in the state.
Majidadi said that since 2014, they were recruited, there was no single incentive from the government, nor salaries or allowances, even as there was no confirmation letters.
“It is now 60 months, about five years, yet the state government has refused to fulfill its own part of the bargain.the government has not paid us, neither did it tell us to stop coming to work as ghost workers.

“We have demonstrated peacefully to the state House of Assembly and other stakeholders to help us appeal to the Almighty Governor Abdulaziz Yari to consider our plights, but all to no avail.”
The group appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to, as a matter of urgency, ensure that justice was done, as the group said it had exhausted all necessary avenues to ensure that the issue was resolved amicably with the government.

Former Federal Commissioner for Information, Chief Edwin Clark, has blasted President Muhammadu Buhari over comments that he established North-East Development Commission, NEDC, in appreciation of the region’s massive electoral support for him in the 2015 and 2019 presidential elections.

Clark said the President has not changed his attitude, recalling his July 2, 2015 statement at the United States Institute of Peace that those who gave him five per cent votes should not expect same with those who gave him 97 per cent.
Speaking at his Asokoro residence in Abuja on Thursday, the elder statesman reminded Buhari that he is the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, irrespective of party, religion or ethnic background.

Clark said the statements has explained the delay on projects in Niger Delta, including the Ogoniland clean-up and the East-West road.
The Ijaw leader said: “These statements credited to Mr President (in 2015 and presently in 2019) is politics taken to the mundane and absurdity, and very unpatriotic.
“Chapter VI, Section 130 of the 1999 Constitution states that: (1) There shall be for the Federation a President. (2) The President shall be the Head of State, the Chief Executive of the Federation and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federation

“Section 132 (4) of the 1999 Constitution states that: “For the purpose of an election to the office of President, the whole of the Federation shall be regarded as one constituency. Therefore, for Mr President to base development of the country on political patronage, is most unfair and unacceptable.”
“If the President pronounces that the signing and inauguration of the North East Development Commission is a reward for the massive votes he got in the North East, let it, therefore, be likely concluded that negligence of his Government to the development of the Niger Delta region is as a result of the people of the region choosing to vote in accordance with their conscience.
“For instance, the non-commencement of the Ogoni clean-up and other equally damaged Oil and Gas producing areas, the non- completion of the East-West Road, and other long deprived economic activities of the region is a punishment for the people of the Niger-Delta for choosing to vote according to their conscience.

“This also can be attributed to Mr President’s refusal to dialogue or execute the South-South Leaders 16 point programme.
“We strongly therefore advise Mr. President not to abandon the goose that lays the golden egg, because, it is a case Mr President telling Nigerians that if the people of the North East had not voted for him massively he would not have signed the Bill for setting up of the NEDC and inaugurated the Commission.”

Femi Fani-Kayode, former Aviation Minister, on Friday commended the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government for establishing June 12 as Nigeria’s Democracy Day.

Fani-Kayode, while commending Buhari’s government for the feat, berated the previous administration of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, for failing to recognize June 12.
The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed had recently disclosed that the inauguration ceremonies of President Muhammadu Buhari for a second term was moved from May 29 to June 12.

Similarly, the Senate had on Thursday concurred with the Public Holiday Act (Amendment) Bill passed by the House of Representatives, which approved June 12 as the new Democracy Day.
This followed a presentation of conference report by Leader of the Senate, Sen. Ahmad Lawan, at plenary of the Senate.
Fani-Kayode in a tweet wrote: “I remain an ardent critic of the @MBuhari admin but there is one thing that I shall always commend them for: the establishment of June 12th as the real Democracy Day.
“Sadly not one @OfficialPDPNig govt, including the one I served from 2003 till 2007, had the courage to do that.”

Appeal Court upholds death sentence for retired NNPC staff, Godwin Elewana who killed his daughter’s boyfriend in 2015



 



The Court of Appeal in Cross River State, has affirmed the death sentence by hanging of one Godwin Elewana, a retired staff of NNPC, for shooting to death, a 22-year old, Douglas Ojugbo, in 2015.
 
Elewana who shot and killed Douglas Ojugbo whom he suspected was having an affair with his daughter, Mercy, on March 10, 2015, was sentenced to death by hanging in a judgement that was passed on Wenesday 21st March, 2018 in the federal High Court.
 
He, however, approached the Court of Appeal in Calabar, where Hon Justice Y. Nimpar, in his judgment, on Wednesday, upheld the decision of the High Court.
 
When the initial judgment was passed in 2018, mother of the deceased, Maria Ojugbo, said, “I thank God for doing what should be done. It is stated in the Bible that anyone who kills by the sword, will die by the sword. Elewana had no reason whatsoever to kill my son in such a manner and conceal the act by burying him. It was Almighty God that gave approval for this judgement.”

The Bible says Jesus Christ was delivered up on account of our transgressions, but was raised for our justification (Romans 4:25). Romans 5:1 declares that we’re justified by faith and at peace with God. Justification means you’re not charged with sin; you’re acquitted and declared righteous. That’s who the new creation is; he has no sin, because he’s a new creature, who never existed before. All things have become new.

Christianity is so simple. All you have to do is accept what the Word says as the truth to live by, and your struggles will be over. The struggle ends immediately you accept all that Christ has done. Suddenly, you’re awakened to the reality of the spiritual realm; the reality of your new life in Christ. It’s an amazing life, an amazing walk in righteousness, and in the perfection and liberty of Christ.

Those who don’t understand this are the ones struggling with the flesh, trying every day to be perfect. I would to God they’d simply accept the truth of God’s Word! He simply wants you to believe and live accordingly. Believe that you’re a new creation in Christ Jesus with no past of sins! Believe you’re justified! Believe you’re now the righteousness of God in Christ, and live your life in Him through faith.

Just a week in not a whole lot has changed although a few injury question marks have been raised. Those injuries haven’t really changed the outlook of the Opening Day roster yet but if they continue to linger, things may look quite different next week. Rotation Locks: Mike Foltynewicz, Kevin Gausman, Sean Newcomb, Julio TeheranThis grouping hasn’t changed yet but some injury concerns have popped up. Mike Foltynewicz was scratched from his scheduled start on Friday due to a sore elbow and was to be examined by team doctors on Saturday. Foltynewicz and the Braves have downplayed the severity of his injury but the situation at the least has put his status as the team’s Opening Day starter in question. Kevin Gausman is hopeful that he will make his spring debut this week but has been dealing with some shoulder soreness of his own. Atlanta has played it safe with him so far but it is a little concerning nonetheless. Sean Newcomb got through his first start without incident, an achievement in and of itself, and is scheduled to pitch in Sunday’s game against Miami. Julio Teheran hasn’t pitched in a Grapefruit League game yet but did throw a simulated game last week. He will likely jump into the official Grapefruit League rotation at some point this week. 5th Starter Competition: Max Fried, Touki ToussaintI dropped Luiz Gohara from this group after it was revealed that he is still building himself up from the shoulder issue that effectively ended his 2018 season. Gohara is throwing but is not ready to pitch in games yet which pretty much takes him out of the mix for the Opening Day roster. As things currently stand, that leaves Max Fried and Touki Toussaint as options for the fifth starter spot. There is a good chance that both make the roster at any rate whether their role is as a starter or a reliever. Some of the other young pitchers have impressed early in camp but not enough yet to be considered as serious candidates to open in the rotation. Injured: Mike SorokaWord is that Mike Soroka resumed playing catch this week and barring a setback will begin throwing off a mound soon. He is probably out of the mix for a rotation spot to open the season but his long term health is the most important thing at this point. Others: Kolby Allard, Bryse Wilson, Kyle Wright, Ian Anderson, Kyle Muller, Joey Wentz, Luiz GoharaKyle Wright struck out three over a two inning stint this week and looked impressive doing so. He will likely get more looks going forward. I am still of the opinion that he will open the season at Triple-A but if injuries continue to linger then he could be an option. Kolby Allard hasn’t allowed an earned run in four innings so far this spring but has yet to strike out a single batter. Kyle Muller has also turned heads and could be an option at some point in 2019 whether as a starter or as a bullpen piece. Bullpen Locks: A.J. Minter, Arodys Vizcaino, Darren O’Day, Jonny VentersA.J. Minter left Friday’s game with a stiffness in his shoulder but disclosed on Saturday that he thought it stemmed from a fender bender that he was involved in on Thursday. Obviously the Braves will be cautious with Minter but his status adds more uncertainty to a bullpen that already has plenty of question marks. Darren O’Day and Jonny Venters made their spring debuts this week. Arodys Vizcaino has yet to get in a Grapefruit League game but will likely do so soon. Competition: Jesse Biddle, Shane Carle, Sam Freeman, Luke Jackson, Chad Sobotka, Dan Winkler, Grant DaytonThis group is unchanged except for the addition of Grant Dayton who threw a scoreless inning in his first appearance of the spring after sitting out all of last season while recovering from Tommy John surgery. This group could be competing for just three spots if Atlanta elects to open the season with both Fried and Toussaint on the active roster. Others: Wes Parsons Evan Gattis Jersey , Jacob Webb, Patrick Weigel, Huascar Ynoa, Thomas Burrows, Corbin Clouse, Tucker DavidsonOf this group, Burrows has been the most impressive throwing three scoreless innings while striking out three. Jacob Webb has been hit particularly hard in three appearances. Catcher Locks: Tyler Flowers, Brian McCannSo far so good for catchers Tyler Flowers and Brian McCann who essentially just need to make it through the spring healthy. Others: Alex Jackson, Raffy Lopez, William Contreras, Carlos Martinez, Jonathan MoralesWilliam Contreras and Alex Jackson have played well in the early going and given fans something to watch at the catcher position. Contreras is 3-for-5 with a home run in three games so far this spring. Jackson is 3-for-10 with a double and a homer in five games. If Jackson can keep that up then he could position himself for a promotion should the Braves need another catcher due to an injury to Flowers or McCann sometime this season. Contreras is thought to be the team’s catcher of the future and has showed promise through the early part of camp. Infield Locks: Ozzie Albies, Johan Camargo, Josh Donaldson, Freddie Freeman, Dansby Swanson, Charlie CulbersonThis group remains intact although we are still waiting on the debuts of Dansby Swanson and Josh Donaldson. Both were originally scheduled to play on Friday but were held out for differing reasons. Swanson felt some soreness in his wrist during batting practice and the team elected to give him a little more time. Donaldson has been full go since arriving at camp but given the injuries he battled last season, the Braves’ medical staff elected to give him a few more days to work on some specific things, including running properly (!). Others: Andres Blanco, Pedro Florimon, Sean Kazmar Jr, Luis Marte, Austin Riley, CJ AlexanderPedro Florimon has received the most opportunities of this group and has delivered going 5-for-11 with a pair of home runs in his first five games this spring. I still don’t believe he is a real candidate to claim the final bench spot but did start a game this week in the outfield. It’s hard to see how many of these guys fit in except to supplant Charlie Culberson http://www.astrosfanproshop.com/authentic-justin-verlander-jersey , and it’s not clear what would have to happen for Culberson to be shown the door.Outfield Locks: Ronald Acuna Jr,Ender Inciarte, Nick MarkakisLike the catcher position, Ronald Acu帽a Jr, Ender Inciarte and Nick Markakis only need to get through the spring healthy to ensure their spots on the Opening Day roster. 4th Outfielder: Adam DuvallIf the Braves carry 13 pitchers to start then there is essentially one bench spot that is up for grabs and whoever claims it will likely need to be able to play in the corner outfield. Adam Duvall has gotten the first crack to nail down the position but is 0-for-10 with two walks in his first five games. Duvall is operating with a non-guaranteed contract so Atlanta cut ties with him and only be on the hook for a prorated amount of his $2.875 million deal. Can a guy like Florimon work his way into this equation? Maybe but the Braves could also elect to wait until the end of the spring when teams start paring down their rosters and see who becomes available. Remember, Atlanta did just that last season when they added Ryan Flaherty and Peter Bourjos to the roster at the end of camp. It’s worth noting that Pedro Florimon has been a much, much worse hitter than Duvall for pretty much any stretch of time you examine. Others: Greyson Jenista, Ryan LaMarre, Rafael Ortega, Cristian Pache, Drew WatersRyan LaMarre has seen action in five games going 2-for-7 while mostly appearing in center field. He is trying to work his name into mention for that final bench spot. Prospects Cristian Pache, Drew Waters and Greyson Jenista have also seen a lot of action early and have performed pretty well.
