Two NYPD officers commit suicide in 24-hours






Two members of the New York Police Department died by suicide within the course of 24 hours, Commissioner James O'Neill said on Thursday.  
 
In a note to members of the department, he encouraged individuals to seek help if needed, saying the NYPD is the largest police department in the United States, with approximately 36,000 officers and 19,000 civilian employees.
 
O'Neill's message reads in full:

Quote:"We are mourning the death of two members of our NYPD family this week, both of whom died by suicide in separate incidents less than 24 hours apart. "Whether you are depressed, going through a separation, having financial difficulties, feeling anxiety, or anything else, you are never alone. Nothing is ever hopeless.
"We cannot hide from this incredibly important discussion. We must not pretend that these things don't happen, or that such tragic deaths are somehow a fact of life. Importantly, we cannot sit idly by and just pray that they don't happen again. We have to take action now. We have to discuss mental health.
"Each of us is dedicated to the important business of fighting crime and keeping New Yorkers safe. And this is an immensely tough job. But your personal life can be even tougher. You may have no idea your office coworker -- or your sector partner, even -- is dealing with a challenge for which they see no positive resolution.
"But you need to know, and always remember: What seems unbearable today, absolutely will be more manageable tomorrow. The first step toward a solution is speaking to someone. Breaking: Court orders INEC to issue Okorocha Certificate of Return






An Abuja Division of the Federal High Court has ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to issue the Certificate of Return to former Imo State governor, Rochas Okorocha, who won the March 9th election for the Imo West Senatorial district.
 
INEC had withdrawn the Certificate of Return after its resident officer for the election, alleged he made the announcement of Okorocha winning the election under duress.
 
Delivering judgement in an appeal filed by Okorocha at the court, Justice Okon Abang this morning, said INEC lacks constitutional jurisdiction to withhold a Certificate of Return. According to Justice Abang, any person declared a winner in an election by the returning officer, remains the winner until petitioners succeed in upturning the declaration at the election tribunal.
 
He added that it is only the Federal high court that had exclusive jurisdiction to rule in such a matter.
 
Okorocha left office on May 27th.  In his valedictory speech, Okorocha accused some members of his party of working to make him politically redundant. He alleged that the refusal of INEC to issue him his Certificate of Return, was politically motivated.
 
INEC is yet to react to this judgement.

Recall that the statement was released less than a month after a similar one by the Kwara South Elders Forum.

They, however, insisted that the former minister should come out boldly and mention his achievements in the state.

They explained that they were in support of the position of Kwara South Elders Forum, saying that the forum consisted of eminent persons from the district.

According to the group “for clarity sake, Kwara South elders forum precedes APC as it had been in existence over the years.

“It is on record that all the governorship candidates including His Excellency, Alhaji Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq, Senatorial and House Of Representative candidates from Kwara South all consulted the forum for endorsement and support in the last election.

“That shows the recognition we all have for the forum,” the group said.

They claimed that whoever that was working for the re-appointment of the ex-minister is promoting anti-people interest.

“They should let us unite and promote someone who will care about the welfare, interest and aspiration of Kwarans as a minister and not a greedy, self-centred person who is not interested in the development and progress of our dear state,” the group stated.

“I thank the entire 8th senate for giving me the opportunity to be the minority leader, and to make history as the first senator since 1999 to be given the role of a leader in this hallowed chamber.

“My President, you and I know that I have forgiven you if you wronged me, even as we are departing from here, if there is still need, you can see me outside after. In the entirety of the senate, I want to thank all of you for indulging me, for particularly tolerating me. Where I went wrong, please forgive me.

“Let me say this, the 8th senate achieved a lot, despite turbulent periods, we remained focused. We made sure that the interest of Nigeria came first.

“But I must say I enjoyed my stay here. It’s a different thing to be a senator and it’s a different thing to be a governor. It is good to taste the legislature first before you become a governor but should you become a governor first, it is also good to bring the experience into the legislature.



“My President, my constituency is very delighted because through this senate, with the constituency projects, we were able to carry out over 80 projects across my senatorial district and I can tell you I went beyond my senatorial district to also touch others.

He also enjoined the next senate president to create a level playing field for all the senators and urged the 9th senate to reform the electoral act.

“My president, you indulge some of us too much. I want the next senate president to “give a level playing field to all because the senate is a leveler. Once you come here, you are all distinguished colleagues,” Akpabio said.

“I want the next senate president to ensure that there is a level playing field; if you give two minutes to me, give two to Dino (Melaye), let Dino not take 10 minutes and when it is my time, you tell me it is time up as though …I’ll raise my hand for a long time and Dino will walk in and be recognised. This disparity should be checked.

“In the 9th senate, it is time to reform the electoral act, we must make sure that every vote counts in Nigeria. A situation where the electoral umpire becomes so terribly biased that people, even in the face of carry go, the political party won’t matter, they will not take that into cognisance.”

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has explained the reason behind its actions against Daar Communications PLC, operator of AIT and Ray Power FM.

Igbere TV had reported that the NBC, on Thursday suspended the operating license of the broadcast station.

In a statement issued to Igbere TV on Thursday, the Director General of the NBC, Dr. Modibbo Kawu said the decision was based on the violation of the broadcasting code by the stations which is backed by provisions of Section 10 of the Third Schedule of the NBC Act Cap N11 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004. 

He said apart from violating the broadcasting code, the decision was also taken for the failure of the station to pay their license fees as when due, “even persistent warning to the company to toe the line of caution.”

The NBC boss noted that in one of their meetings with the management of DAAR Communications held on 2nd June, 2017, the commission expressed its disappointment with the way and manner hate speech, divisive and inciting comments are applied in discussion of national issues in breach of the provisions of the NBC Act and Broadcast Code, saying that the suspension stands till further notice.

Igbere TV recalls that Chairman and Founder of DAAR Communications, High Chief Raymond Dokpesi had earlier in the day embarked on a protest against what he called ‘undue intimidation and interference’ of the NBC DG, Dr. Modibbo Kawu. 

According to him, in their relationship with the NBC, Daar Communications carried on, as if it is beyond the regulatory direction of the commission, even when they didn’t pay their licence fees as and when due. 

But Kawu insisted that the revocation of the AIT license was principally linked to the issues regarding the operations of AIT/Raypower, particularly, Political Platform and Kakaaki aired on AIT. 

Full Statement,

“Following monitoring reports and complaints from concerned Nigerians about the broadcast contents of Daar Communications Plc’s AIT/Raypower broadcast stations, the NBC have over the last 2 years summoned on several occasions management of the company to address issues regarding the operations of AIT/Raypower with the company, particularly, Political Platform and Kakaaki aired on AIT. ‘‘In one of our meetings, held on 2nd June, 2017, the Commission expressed its disappointment with the way and manner Hate Speech, divisive and inciting comments are applied in discussion of national issues in breach of the provisions of the NBC Act and Broadcast Code. 

‘‘Again, on 15th August, 2017, it became imperative to invite the company for yet another meeting on almost same issues. Furthermore, while addressing another meeting on 7th February, 2018 we highlighted issues of concern to the Commission which indicated that the company had been breaching the provisions of Sections 3.1.2 and 3.1.3 of the broadcast Code. The company’s delegates in their response promised to abate the breaches and comply with the law. 

‘‘However, on October 18, 2018, the Commission was disturbed with the manner in which social media issues became part of the mainstream media unedited on AIT/Raypower, and was constrained to issue a generic letter to all broadcast stations on the need to exercise caution in the use of user-generated content from the social media knowing how volatile and misleading the social media has become. The management of Daar Communication Plc thereafter took to the social media to display our official correspondences. 

‘‘Recently, the Commission’s monitoring reports on AIT/Raypower indicate the use of divisive comments accredited to the segment of “Kakaaki”, tagged, “Kakaaki Social”, where inciting comments like, “Nigeria is cursed, we declare independent state of Niger Delta”, “Nigeria irritates me”, “this country is gradually Islamizing” and other similar slogans are used without editorial control in breach of the broadcast Code. We were therefore constrained to issue Daar Communication letters of warning dated May 27th, 2019.

‘‘We also observed from monitoring reports that a documentary on the Presidential Election Tribunal, a pending election petition matter aired on AIT on Wednesday and Thursday, 22nd and 23rd May, 2019 without regard to the provisions of the Broadcast Code. The Commission, in line with its regulatory powers again cautioned AIT in another letter also dated 27th May, 2019. 

‘‘However, instead of making amends, the management of Daar Communications Plc resorted to the use of media propaganda against the regulator. Even the letters from the NBC were posted on social media platforms. Needless to state that Daar Communications have over the years turned themselves into a bad example of how a professional broadcast outfit should not be run. 

‘‘In their relationship with the NBC, Daar Communications carry on, as if it is beyond the regulatory direction of the Commission. They don’t pay their licence fees as and when due. Its broadcast is patently partisan and one sided and deliberately inciting and heating the polity. The management of the Company has created the habit of using the channel to fight its personal battles contrary to the statutory requirements of the law.’’ 

‘‘Today the 6th of June, 2019, AIT/Rapower embarked on use of inflammatory, divisive, inciting broadcasts, and media propaganda against the government and, the NBC for performing its statutory functions of regulating the broadcast industry in Nigeria. 

‘‘Consequently, after several meetings with management of Daar Communications Plc and many letters of warning. The NBC, today 6th June, 2019 took a decision to suspend the licence of Daar Communications Plc for failure to abide by the Commission’s directives, the provisions of the NBC Act Cap N11 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria and the Nigeria Broadcasting Code. 

‘‘This decision is based on the provisions of Section 10 of the Third Schedule of the NBC Act Cap N11 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, which states as follows: where in the opinion of the Commission the station has been used in a manner detrimental to national interest; where there is wilful or repeated failure to operate substantially as set forth in the licence; where there is wilful or repeated violation or wilful or repeated failure to observe any provision of this Act or any rule or regulation of the Commission authorised by this Act or by a treaty ratified by the Federal Republic of Nigeria; where there is violation of or failure to observe any cease and desist order issued by the Commission; where a provision of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code has been seriously breached; and the SHUT DOWN order is until further notice.”

President Buhari has the power to remove, suspend CJN - Acting CJN, Tanko Muhammad






The Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Tanko Muhammad, has said President Buhari, as the appointor of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, has the power to remove or suspend any person occupying the office.
 
Muhammad stated this in defence of Buhari’s suspension of the embattled CJN, Justice Walter Onnoghen, on January 25, 2019, and his immediate appointment by the President as the Acting CJN.
 
This is contained in a counter-affidavit which he filed to oppose a suit seeking to stop him from being appointed as substantive CJN. The suit was filed before the Federal High Court in Abuja by Malcom Omirhobo Foundation, through its lawyer and promoter, Chief Malcom Omirhobo.  
 
It prayed for, among others, a declaration that Justice Muhammad “is not a proper and fit person to be recommended by the 2nd defendant (the Federal Judicial Service Commission) to the 1st defendant (the NJC) and by the 1st defendant to the 5th defendant (Buhari) for appointment to the Office of the CJN.”
 
This, the plaintiff said, was because Muhammad in accepting to be sworn in as the Acting CJN, “conducted himself in a manner that cast doubt of confidence in his integrity and impartiality of the judiciary and having made himself a tool used in the violation of the Constitution of Nigeria.”
The seven defendants to the suit are the National Judicial Council, the Federal Judicial Service Commission, Justice Muhammad, the Federal Government, Buhari, the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Senate.
 
In his response contained in the counter-affidavit filed on his behalf by the law firm of Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), Muhammad maintained that Buhari, acting on an ex parte order of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, rightly suspended Onnoghen. The counter-affidavit was deposed to by Sadiq Ahmad, a lawyer in Fagbemi’s law firm, who also stated that he with “the 3rd defendant (Muhammad) carefully studied the plaintiff’s application for interlocutory injunction.”
 
He also said he did not commit any wrong by submitting himself to be sworn in in acting capacity following the order of the CCT and the vacuum left behind by Onnoghen’s suspension. He recalled that Onnoghen had subsequently, after his suspension by the President, resigned from office.
 
On April 18, 2019, the CCT convicted Justice Onnoghen on charges of false and non-declaration of assets, and as punishment, ordered his removal from office, barred him from holding public office for a period of 10 years and ordered the forfeiture of the proceeds of the bank accounts he was said to have failed to declare.
Muhammad stated that apart from the constitutional procedure for the removal of a person from the office of the CJN based on age or retirement or by an address supported by two-thirds majority of the Senate, “any public officer found guilty of the breach or violation of code of conduct can be ordered to vacate the office he is holding as the consequence of the breach or violation of the code of conduct.”
He added that the President also had the power to remove or suspend any occupant of the office of the CJN.
“I also know as a fact that the 5th defendant has the power to remove or suspend any person occupying the office of the Chief Justice of Nigeria being the appointing authority,” the affidavit read in part.

Quote:Justifying Onnoghen’s suspension by Buhari, the counter-affidavit stated, “That I also know as a fact that as at January 25, 2019 the order of the Code of Conduct Tribunal also directed the 5th defendant to swear in the most senior Justice of the Supreme Court as the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria.
“That it was pursuant to the said order of the Code of Conduct Tribunal that the 5th defendant appointed the 3rd defendant as the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria.
“That in the circumstance, I know as a fact there was no need for a recommendation of the 2nd defendant (FJSC) to the 1st defendant (NJC) or of the 1st defendant to the 5th defendant (Buhari) before the erstwhile Chief Justice of Nigeria could be suspended from office.
“There was also no need for the 5th defendant to approach the 7th defendant for support by majority of two-third votes, before the erstwhile Chief Justice of Nigeria could be suspended from office.”

Man's face disfigured after he was found hiding in the ceiling of someone's apartment in Ikorodu (photos)






The young man pictured above, received serious beating on Thursday, after he was found hiding in the ceiling of someone's apartment in the Ikorodu area, Lagos state. According to reports, the young man broke into the room of a resident in the community and hid himself in the ceiling of the building. 
 
A hammer was found on him which he allegedly planned to use to attack his victim. He has since been handed over to the police. See more photos below.

14 Lions are on the loose after escaping from Kruger National Park in South Africa






Residents living in and around Phalaborwa have been warned to be very careful after 14 lions escaped from Kruger National Park in South Africa.

The lions reportedly escaped from the Kruger National Park on Thursday June 6th, Limpopo-based radio stations Capricorn FM and 1NationFM reported on Friday morning.  

The Limpopo government confirmed in a tweet that the lions were believed to have escaped and were seen roaming around the Phalaborwa Foskor Mine.
 
"It is suspected that the lions escaped from Kruger National Park. The Limpopo Department of Economic Development, Environment, and Tourism (LEDET) has allocated field rangers to closely monitor the pride's movement prior action to be taken," LEDET said. 

"A meeting held between LEDET, The Kruger National Park and Greater Balule concluded that the lions are to be captured and released back at Kruger National Park. Employees at Foskor Mine and members of the public are hereby advised to be alert at all times."

It comes two days after Kruger National Park confirmed one of its staff member's children had been mauled to death by a leopard. The leopard was later tracked and shot in other to prevent the animal from harming another person.

NBC wants AIT to be like NTA – Oby Ezekwesili






Former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, has joined other Nigerians to condemn the suspension of the broadcasting licence of AIT and Ray Power FM stations by the National Broadcasting Commission NBC.
 
NBC yesterday June 6th, suspended the license of DAAR communications, owners of AIT and Raypower, on grounds that the media house failed to abide by the ethics of broadcasting.
 
Reacting to the revocation, Ezekwesili in a tweet she posted, said the NBC wants AIT to carry out its functions like the state-owned NTA where all the programmes are devoid of critisim for the government in power.

Photos: Nigerian Judge slaps a Redeemed church pastor over noise pollution in Ondo State



 



There was mild drama at the Redeemed Christian Church of God, the Glory Tabernacle parish, at Ijapo Estate in Akure, Ondo State capital, when Justice Oyebisi Folayemi Omoleye, a presiding judge of the Court of Appeal, confronted the church's parishioner over its noisy religious activities.  
 
According to a report by Saharareporters, Justice Omoleye, wielding a stick in her hand, invaded the RCCG Church, in company of her security guard and allegedly assaulted some of its worshipers on Wednesday and Felix Solomon, a pastor in the parish, Felicia Akindurojoye, an assistant pastor and some others were reportedly injured by Justice Omoleye during the attack.
 
The incident happened during the church's weekly programme called the Divine Encounter. Explaining what happened, an eyewitness said the judge dashed into the church's building and began to film the congregation's activities.

Quote:The source said: "This woman (Justice Omoleye) entered into the church alongside her security guard and she began to record a video of the worshipers with her mobile phone. Immediately, one of the presiding pastors saw her and went to inquire why was she filming congregational worshipers in the church. But she replied that she was on the church premises to record the activites of the worshipers as they always disturbed her peace. I noticed that the pastor was really not comfortable with her action but gave her the go-ahead to record the programme since it is a church.  

"But as a result of her action, many of the worshipers who attended the programme could not concentrate. And all of us was wondering what she was up to with the filming as she was busy recording our faces with her mobile phone. Just imagine, this woman stayed in the church and waited from 10 am when the programme started till 12 noon and busy filming the activity.  
"She waited until the church was about to end its programme and again started to record the worshipers who were coming out of the church. The woman intentionally disrupted the church's programme because she complained too much that we disturbed her peace with activities of the church." 

Quote:Awoyelu said: "It is true, the woman came into the church today and started filming with her mobile phone all those in the congregation who were worshiping.  "We did allow her to film because this is a House of God but she began to act unseemly at the end of the programme. Some of our church members had to challenge her on the reason why she had to start filming their faces again even after the programme. Instead, she armed herself with a big stick, chasing and attacking people in the church.

The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, has condemned the closure of AIT and RayPower FM by the National Broadcasting Commission, NBC.

NUJ, which urged NBC to do the needful by reopening the stations within 24-hours, stated that the “action portends grave danger for Free Press and Independent Media.”

Recall that on Thursday, NBC suspended operations of Daar Communications, owners of AIT and RayPower FM over allegations of breaching Broadcasting Code.

The statement signed by the President of NUJ, Chris Isiguzo and union’s National Secretary, Shuaibu Usman Leman, described NBC actions as unacceptable.

The statement read, “The Nigeria Union of Journalists is alarmed at the closure of AIT by the National Broadcasting Commission and believes that the action portends grave danger for Free Press and Independent Media.

“Independent and Pluralistic Media in a democracy like Nigeria serve to promote democracy by their dissemination of authentic information and ensuring transparency in governance.


“We condemn this closure over allegations of breach of 2004 Broadcasting Code and insist there are better ways of sanctioning media organisations that are found to have erred.

“It will be helpful if the NBC will immediately reopens AIT to ensure that they continue to promote debate and opinions on issues that are of societal, economic and political importance to the nation.

“We expect them to do the needful in 24-hours,” the statement read.

Man accused of murdering his 5-year-old niece is charged with rape and sodomy






A Utah man who allegedly murdered his 5-year-old niece last month has been charged with sexual assault.
 
21-year-old Alex Whipple is accused of killing Elizabeth Shelley, 5, on May 25 after the child's mother - his sister let him spend the night at the family home.
 

 
The Cache County Attorney's Office said new evidence recovered by the Utah State Crime Lab led prosecutors to charge Alex with rape of a child in the first degree and sodomy upon a child in the first degree in connection to the murder of Elizabeth "Lizzy" Shelley.
 
Lizzy was first reported missing by her mother on the morning of May 25. Lizzy's mother also reported her brother, Whipple, missing. He had reportedly slept on the couch the previous night after drinking with his sister and her boyfriend but wasn't found by morning.
 

 
Whipple was taken into custody several days later and, on May 29, after giving police directions on how to find Lizzy’s remains in exchange for immunity from the death penalty, officials recovered the body of the missing girl just a block away from her home in Logan, Utah. The body was found under trees and brush.
 

 
Whipple was previously charged with aggravated murder, kidnapping, obstruction of justice and abuse of desecration of a human body.

Two Canadian women kidnapped at gunpoint in Ghana






Two Canadian women have been kidnapped in Ghana by unidentified gunmen in the country's second largest city, Kumasi.
 
The two students, aged 19 and 20, were working as volunteers for a charity. They were kidnapped on Tuesday evening outside their apartment in the Ahodwo district and bundled into a car, police said.  
 
Police say the two women were volunteers with Youth Challenge International, a Toronto-based international development organisation.

Two-year-old boy killed by a leopard in South Africa's Kruger National Park






A two-year-old boy has been killed by a leopard in South Africa's Kruger National Park.  
 
According to reports, the leopard managed to access a fenced off area of the park and grab the boy, who was the son of an employee. Family members rushed the boy to hospital but he was pronounced dead on arrival.  
 
The park said in a statement that such attacks were "very rare", but rangers killed the leopard to "remove the danger". Ike Phaahla, a spokesman for the park, said the exact circumstances of the toddler's death remains unclear.
 
He said that animals were naturally afraid of human beings and did not usually get close to them. "In parks like the KNP predators do interact with tourists and staff and at times it may result in species like leopard getting habituated to people and losing their fear," Mr Phaahla said.
 
He said that people visiting and working in the park were given as much protection as possible with accommodation fenced off to keep animals out, but said they found ways of getting in. "We have to respect that they are wild animals," he said.

WE’RE LUMINARIES

And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever (Daniel 12:3).

The word translated, “Shine” in the scripture above is “zahar” in Hebrew, and it means, “to admonish, teach, inspire, or send out light.” These all connote leadership, and light gives leadership; it gives guidance. It parallels what Jesus implied when He said, “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost” (Matthew 28:19). “Go and teach all nations” means go and shine to all nations; inspire all nations.

This is our calling as God’s people: we make students or pupils of the nations. We show the world the true life. We show them true happiness and joy. We show them what the love of God is as we unveil the Gospel to them. We’re the light in a dark world, to lead men into Christ and His priceless inheritance.

When you arrive, illumination comes; there’s direction; darkness is dispelled and the light and righteousness of God are established. You’re like Paul, whom the Lord commissioned to open the eyes of the unsaved, and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God (Acts 26:18).

Proverbs 11:30 says, “…he that winneth souls is wise” ; put that together with our opening verse and see that, indeed, we’re luminaries. We take the light of the Gospel everywhere we go. We give direction and show the way; we bring fulfilment and joy. These are qualities of light, and we’re the light of the world.
In John 8:12, Jesus said, “…I am the light of the world. If anybody follows me, he shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” 1 John 4:17 declares, “…as he is, so are we in this world.” We have the light of life, and dispense the same to our world.

Sickness, poverty, discouragement, death and all other works of darkness and evil can’t, and should never find a place in your life. You’re a shining light; walk in this reality.

Thank you, holy Father, for enlisting me in your army of soul winners; and now, I illuminate my world, and the hearts of sinners are open to receive the message of your saving grace today, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Special Presidential Investigative Panel for the Recovery of Public Property (SPIP) on Thursday, said corruption cases involving eight senators had been transferred to the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) for investigation, Igbere TV reports.

Besides, the SPIP alleged that the accused persons suppressed facts concerning these properties in their assets declaration forms submitted to the CCB.

Igbere TV reports that Chairman of the SPIP, Mr Okoi Obono-Obla said during investigation, the panel discovered that the senators acquired properties beyond their legitimate earnings.

Obono-Obla identified those involved to include former Senate President David Mark; Senator Stella Oduah; Senator Hope Uzodinma; Senator Peter Nwaoboshi; Senator Albert Bassey and a Director in the Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing, Ibrahim Musa Tumsah.

Igbere TV recalls that the SPIP had before now, filed charges before the Federal High Court, Abuja against most of those named in the cases transferred to the CCB on the same issue of non-assets declaration.

Igbere TV learnt that David Mark has a suit pending before the Federal High Court, Abuja in which he is challenging the activities of the panel, particularly the SPIP’s claim that he unlawfully acquired his property in Abuja.

The charge the panel filed against Senator Oduah was assigned to Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu, but no further steps have been taken by the panel since it filed the charge last year.

The charge against Uzodimna is before Justice Okon Abang. But the office of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) recently took over the prosecution of the case from the SPIP.

The SPIP boss said the charge against Sen. Bassey is before Justice John Tsoho.

Many of those named in the cases have argued that the SPIP lacks the powers to initiate charges against them, citing the judgment of the Court of Appeal in the Tumsah case.

The National Working Committee of the ruling All Progressives Congress on Thursday set up a five-man disciplinary committee to investigate the party’s Deputy National Chairman, North, Lawal Shuaibu.

According to a statement by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Lanre Issa-Onilu, the decision was taken at the 38th regular meeting of the NWC held in Abuja.

Shuaibu had recently called out the party’s National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, on his leadership style asking him to resign.

But Issa-Onilu said the NWC passed a vote of confidence in Oshiomhole despite Shuaibu’s outburst against him.

The statement read, “The meeting of the National Working Committee at its 38th regular meeting held on 27th May, 28th May 2019 and 6th June, 2019, considered several issues, among which was the state of the party.

“After extensive deliberation, the NWC resolved as follows: to pass a vote of confidence in the National Chairman, Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole.

“To set up a five-man disciplinary committee headed by Otunba Niyi Adebayo to investigate the following: the allegation leveled by Senator Lawal Shuaibu against the National Chairman on issues involving the collective decisions of the National Working Committee.

“The instigation of Senators/members of the House of Representatives by Senator Lawal Shuaibu against the decision of the party on the choice of the Presiding Officers for both chambers (Senate and the House of Representatives).

“The committee is mandated to submit its report to the National Working Committee within seven days from today (Thursday).”


State chairmen back Oshiomhole

Chairmen of the All Progressives Congress from the 36 states and the FCT have declared support for Oshiomhole.

Spokesman for the Forum of State Chairmen and the Chairman of the party in Enugu State, Dr. Ben Nwoye, spoke on behalf of his colleagues in Abuja, after a meeting with the party’s NWC.

He said, “We discussed the issue of party unity and the need to move the country forward. We have all unanimously passed a vote of confidence in the national chairman and the NWC.

“So, any news making the round that our National Chairman is facing crisis should be brought to rest.

“We found out based on the meeting that the issues are without merit and that they were brought up to malign the National Chairman.

“You recall that the actual reports came out on a day that was supposed to be the happiest day for the party, the day of inauguration of the President for a second term.

“Anybody with genuine issues should have presented them at the appropriate time and through the right channel. So, it was with no other intent than to malign the President and bring us down.

“Nobody gave President Buhari any chance of winning his second chance even with all that he had done. This chairman did something that was almost impossible.

“The job of the national chairman was to prosecute the election and he did and we did the unthinkable and the President has been sworn in for a second term and we give credit to the chairman and the NWC.”


Shittu wants Oshiomole out

Meanwhile, the immediate past Minister of Communication, Adebayo Shittu, says it is the personality of President Muhammadu Buhari that is galvanising the ruling APC.

He said the ruling party might have problems in 2023 when the tenure of the President would come to an end.

Shittu, who spoke with journalists in Abuja on Thursday, also said there were instances to suggest that the National Chairman of the APC, Mr Adams Oshiomhole was not capable of leading the ruling party.

Shittu insisted that the APC would not retain power in 2023 if the former governor of Edo State “is not removed” as the national chairman of the ruling party.

He said “I am hard on Oshiomhole because he has come to destroy our party. How do you justify a chairman who came to power at a time we were in power and had 26 states? Now, we have lost about six states.

“With Oshiomhole, I don’t see us winning because a lot of people will be driven out of the party because he will continue with his injustice because a lot of things have been destroyed.”

On his NYSC certificate scandal, the former minister said his refusal to serve was not enough for him to have been disqualified.

He said there was nowhere in the Nigerian Constitution that said anyone contesting political office must have an NYSC certificate.

The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has demanded immediate revocation of the suspension order of the licenses of DAAR Communication Plc, owners of AIT, Ray Power, and Faaji FM.

According to the Guild, the suspension order “runs contrary to the ideals of free speech and the fine tenets of press freedom.”

In a statement signed by its President, Mrs. Funke Egbemode, and General Secretary, Mrs. Mary Atolagbe, the Guild described the action of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) as a “case of Executive highhandedness,” adding “it paints our dear country in the darkest tar of dictatorship.”

The statement reads: “The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) hereby condemns in very strong terms the indefinite suspension of the licenses of the African Independent Television, AIT, Ray Power by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).

“The Guild demands in clear terms the revocation of the suspension order as it runs contrary to the ideals of free speech and the fine tenets of press freedom. This is a case of Executive highhandedness and it paints our dear country in the darkest tar of dictatorship.

“The Fourth Estate of the Realm remains the watchdog of society and any attempt to gag it in any guise is an affront on democracy and the people. The NBC must and should rescind this ignoble and despicable decision.
“The Guild strongly believes the NBC action is a draconian form of regulation, being out of tune with democratic principles.
The Guild is concerned about the violation of the constitutional rights of DAAR Communications and the absence of media freedom, independence and the stifling of operations of media outfits which are performing their roles as the watchdog of the Nigerian society.

“The NGE condemns in strong terms the barbaric crackdown on the broadcast outfit and demands the immediate cessation of this atrocious repression and excessive show of power by the NBC, whose duty is to regulate and not kill the media.

“Muzzling the media and throwing thousands of Nigerians into the already saturated labor market should not be the trophy for good corporate governance of a regulator; it is something to be ashamed of and NBC should be ashamed at its action in a fledgling democracy in the 21st Century.

“The Guild is strongly of the opinion that the NBC, in exercising its regulatory powers, should concentrate on implementing policies that will position Nigeria’s broadcasting to compete in the global spheres, rather than engage in witch-hunting and unnecessary show of excessive force.
The Guild hereby expresses its solidarity with the AIT/Raypower family, urging the staff and management to remain calm as the Guild liaises with and other media professionals as well as well meaning Nigerians to get justice.

“The NGE appeals to President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, to use his good offices to call NBC to order.

“It is to be recalled that NBC had, before the 2019 general election, shut down Joy FM in Jos for violations of the broadcasting code. Last year, the NBC shut down Ekiti Radio/TV station. Shutting down stations and withdrawing licences are too extreme in the circumstance. There must be humane and saner ways to resolve disputes bordering on violation of the Broadcasting Code.”

NBC shuts down AIT, Ray Power FM indefinitely






The Nigeria Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has suspended indefinitely the license of Daar Communications Plc, owners of Africa Independent Television (AIT) and Ray Power.
 
The Director-General of NBC, Modibbo Kawu, who made this known to journalists this evening, said the ban is as a result of the broadcasting station's failure to abide by the broadcasting code.
 
Below is the statement from NBC

Quote:“Following monitoring reports and complaints from concerned Nigerians about the broadcast contents of Daar Communications Plc’s AIT/Raypower broadcast stations, the NBC have over the last 2 years summoned on several occasions management of the company to address issues regarding the operations of AIT/Raypower with the company, particularly, Political Platform and Kakaaki aired on AIT,” he said.
“In one of our meetings, held on 2nd June, 2017, the Commission expressed its disappointment with the way and manner Hate Speech, divisive and inciting comments are applied in discussion of national issues in breach of the provisions of the NBC Act and Broadcast Code.
“Again, on 15th August, 2017, it became imperative to invite the company for yet another meeting on almost same issues. Furthermore, while addressing another meeting on 7th February, 2018 we highlighted issues of concern to the Commission which indicated that the company had been breaching the provisions of Sections 3.1.2 and 3.1.3 of the broadcast Code. The company’s delegates in their response promised to abate the breaches and comply with the law.
“However, on October 18, 2018, the Commission was disturbed with the manner in which social media issues became part of the mainstream media unedited on AIT/Raypower, and was constrained to issue a generic letter to all broadcast stations on.
“Instead of making amends, the management of Daar Communications Plc resorted to the use of media propaganda against the regulator. Even the letters from the NBC were posted on social media platforms,” he said.
“Needless to state that Daar Communications have over the years turned themselves into a bad example of how a professional broadcast outfit should not be run.
“In their relationship with the NBC, Daar Communications carry on, as if it is beyond the regulatory direction of the Commission. They don’t pay their licence fees as and when due.
“Its broadcast is patently partisan and one sided and deliberately inciting and heating the polity. The management of the Company has created the habit of using the channel to fight its personal battles contrary to the statutory requirements of the law.
“Today the 6th of June, 2019, AIT/Rapower embarked on use of inflammatory, divisive, inciting broadcasts, and media propaganda against the government and, the NBC for performing its statutory functions of regulating the broadcast industry in Nigeria.
“Consequently, after several meetings with management of Daar Communications Plc and many letters of warning. The NBC, today 6th June, 2019 took a decision to suspend the licence of Daar Communications Plc for failure to abide by the Commission’s directives, the provisions of the NBC Act Cap N11
“The SHUT DOWN order is until further notice.” Kawu said

Quote:“I have it on strict authority and very assured information that the highest echelons of government, the Presidency, queried and challenged the NBC that they were not doing their jobs: ‘How on earth could they be hearing and seeing on AIT what they termed hate speech?’
“Any criticism of this government is hate speech. The NBC is acting under the authority of the President and Commander-in-Chief. The licensing fees in Nigeria is one of the highest in the world. There is no country in the world where you have this type of exploitative fees. I have appealed for a reduction because the payments cannot be sustained by private broadcasters in Nigeria.
“This economy has plummeted. This government has called this organisation unprintable names which has deterred several advertisers from patronising AIT. I sought an audience with the NBC DG. I called, sent letters and sent text messages to him, but he refused. A final year Accounting student of the Ekiti State University who was involved in the mass failure in one of the courses, attempted suicide yesterday Wednesday June 5th.
According to Lere Olayinka, an aide of former governor of the state Ayo Fayose, the student was rushed to the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH), Ado Ekiti where doctors are currently battling to save his life.

The Federal Government has revoked five oil mining licences (OML) and one oil prospecting licences (OPL) belonging to five companies, Igbere TV reports.

In a statement issued by the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) on Thursday, and obtained by Igbere TV, it said the revocation was based on a presidential directive to “recover legacy debts” owed by the companies operating the licences.

The five companies affected were listed as Pan Ocean Oil Corporation (OML 98); Allied Energy Resources Nigeria, (OML 120 and 121); Express Petroleum and Gas Company (OML 108); Cavendish Petroleum Nigeria (OML 110) and Summit Oil International (OPL 206).

The Kwara lawmaker who later defected to the PDP enjoyed the support of his colleagues despite their political differences and this could be said to be responsible for his stay in office until the expiration of his tenure.

The PDP Director-General in this year’s presidential election will not be returning to the 9th Senate because he lost his re-election bid.

The Senate under Saraki has at different occasions clashed with the executive arm of government headed by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Mr Buhari has often blamed the National Assembly as responsible for his administration’s inability to deliver on some of its campaign promises, policies and programmes.

One Thursday morning, one of the aides of the Senate President, Olu Onemola, on Twitter described the tenure of his principal at the red chamber as an impact-filled, productive and responsive one in the country’s history.

Police in Anambra State have arrested the suspected murderer of Chinasa Pauline Agbata, a 22-year-old 300 Level Linguistics student of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State

The police spokesperson, Haruna Mohammed, said the suspect, Onudili Sontochukwu, was apprehended following discreet investigation.

He said, “It would be recalled that on the 20/3/2019, one Chinasa Pauline Agbata ‘f’, student of UNIZIK, was murdered and dumped at the school gate same date at about 7:30pm.

Following the incident, Police detectives attached to the Command Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) launched aggressive manhunt of perpetrators and arrested one Onudili Sontochukwu ‘m’ aged 25years on the 2/6/2019.”

He said the suspect was assisting the Police with useful information that could help in unravelling circumstances surrounding the incident.

LAGOS —Former Defence Minister, Lt. General Theophilus Danjuma, retd; former Military Governor of Rivers State, General Zamani Lekwot, retd, and Chief Solomon Asemota, SAN, have told the United Kingdom Parliament that President Muhammadu Buhari was pursuing a jihad or Islamisation agenda and not serious about tackling insecurity arising from Boko Haram insurgency and herdsmen-farmers crises in the country.


The trio acted under the aegis of Nigerian Christian Elders Forum, NCEF, which also has General Joshua Dogonyaro, retd; Justice Kalajine Anigbogu, Elder Matthew Owojaiye, Dr. Kate Okpaleke and Elder Moses Ihonde, as members.

The Christian elders, who blamed Lord Lugard for sowing the seed of ethno-religious crises and dichotomy between Northern and Southern Nigeria, and urged deepening of democracy and rejection of sharia, stated their position in a paper dated June 3 to the All Party Parliamentary Group for International Freedom of Religion or Belief, APPG, UK Parliament.
Titled: “Competing Ideologies of Democracy and Sharia in Nigeria; The Nuance Understating of the Drivers of the Conflict in Nigeria by Farmers and Herders,” the paper was in response to the request of the APPG for written submissions to its inquiry on ongoing violence between farmers and herders in Nigeria.

They cited the prevailing waves of insecurity and quoted President Buhari’s pre-2015 comments supporting the sharia movement, “why he could die for the course of Islam, why they could not be blackmailed into killing the sharia idea, why sharia must be spread all over Nigeria, why Boko Haram members should be given VIP treatment and not killed, and why Muslims should only vote for those who will promote Islam” among others to back their claim.

“The action taken so far by the government suggests collusion or cover up by refusing to call jihad by its proper name. When a crime is committed and acts of subjugation and/or humiliation is added such as rape or religious signs or cries, this is jihad. Because the violence is motivated by ideological reasons, action taken by all interested parties must be directed towards the prevention of violence. Bullets do not kill ideology; it is a better ideology over time that can eliminate Boko Haram and Fulani herdsmen and this is Democracy,” they said.

He further created Northern Nigeria Corporation which Turkey did not offer as reasons why the Muslim North was entitled to special treatment and, above all, he (Lugard) was a disgruntled “suitor” who seemed to have lost his faith in Christianity before he got married to Miss Flora Shaw.

He hated educated black people and the South had many of them by 1914 dispensed with during a period of racism. Lugard created Muslim Northern Nigeria and annexed (not amalgamated) Southern Nigeria to provide access to the sea and sustenance for Muslim North. He would rather have traditional leaders to rule, than educated Africans. He ensured this, even after retirement from the colonial services.

“At the same time the British government ensured dominance of the North in terms of size as against the South that was divided into East, West and, later Midwest.
“Democracy was agreed upon by all the parties, North, East and West during the Independence Conferences but the Intelligence Department was structured to promote Sharia as an alternative source of legislation.
“At independence in 1960, the first law enacted by the Parliament was the Emergency Act of 1961. This was a strange way of celebrating freedom. This law was followed by a contrived Emergency in Western Region in 1963 resulting in the Western crisis of 1965 and the coup of January and July 1966. The July coup was a jihad that resulted in the killing of innocent Nigerians especially the Ndigbo who were mainly Christians.
This jihad resulted in the pogrom that led to the Civil War of 1967 – 1970. The jihad continued with the Maitatsine riots which was supposed to be between Muslim sects but in reality provided an excuse to attack and kill Ndigbo especially the shop owners and their shops were looted.

There was no correlation between Maitatsine and Christian shop owners. “Maitatsine” became an excuse for jihad against other Muslims to ensure that they fall in line especially in Bulunkutu, Jimeta, etc. Having subdued the North and moderate Muslims including the overthrow of Christian General, Yakubu Gowon and a moderate Muslim President, Shehu Shagari, today, 2019, Nigeria has a group of Christian Clergy (Mukharabat), men and women paid handsomely and granted national Honors, whose duties include speaking in defense of Islam and Sharia.”

“There was a commission of inquiry in 1982 in Nigeria which discovered that the three persons named above introduced the doctrine and operational manual of Muslim Brotherhood into Nigeria. The Maitatsine inquiry showed clearly the use of state violence to quell religious fanaticism thus began the process of state force to bring other Muslim sects into line; the same was applied to El Zakzaky in 2016, a Shiite who was an ally of the Sunni in the 1970s to 1980s. It also provided political reasons for the dominance of Muslim North over Christian South. Evidence of organized co-ordination

“The Intelligence Service is the only organization in Nigeria since independence that has not been subjected to a commission of inquiry. It was strengthened when Murtala Mohammed was assassinated and became an instrument for the “protection of Muslims and the promotion of Sharia.” The Intelligence Service constituted the “invisible government”. Evidence of this fact can be found in the leadership and personnel of the organization. The videos made by Boko Haram also showed organized co-ordination.”

Evidence of support

“A former Governor of Borno State started the Boko Haram and co-opted the head of Boko Haram sect, Yesufu into his cabinet. A member of NCEF and former Chief of Army Staff had to call on Nigerians to resort to self defense when the telephone of a terrorist was discovered to contain numbers of government and top officials in the Armed Forces. No commission of inquiry was set up, but a committee of the military was alleged to have found the military blameless. Today, all Ethnic Nationalities have been advised to resort to self-help. This is not evidence of an organized society.”

Disproportionate Number of Victims

“This can be attributed to various acts of “stealth jihad” by the Federal Government whereby arms in the hands of law abiding citizens mainly Christians were confiscated while the Fulani herdsmen and Boko Haram retain their AK47 rifles. When these terrorists are arrested, they are “re-habilitated” and sent back into the society. They are never prosecuted. See Buhari’s statement para 7(i) – (vii) below.”

3. “That Muslims should only vote those who will promote Islam. “We are more than Christians if you add our Muslim brothers in the South-West.” Buhari was caught on video tapes before he became president in 2015.”

Action so far taken

The action taken so far by the government suggests collusion or cover up by refusing to call jihad by its proper name. When a crime is committed and acts of subjugation and/or humiliation is added such as rape or religious signs or cries, this is jihad. Because the violence is motivated by ideological reasons, action taken by all interested parties must be directed towards the prevention of violence. Bullets do not kill ideology; it is a better ideology over time that can eliminate Boko Haram and Fulani herdsmen and this is Democracy.’’

Action taken to prevent further conflict

“Knowledge, information and understanding. It took over 20 years of study to appreciate that the violence is motivated by ideology. All forms of distraction and propaganda are utilized to change the narrative: poverty, illiteracy, change of climate, etc. The truth is Sharia ideology is incompatible with Democracy. A multi-cultural, multi-religion and multi-ethnic country like Nigeria requires Democracy not Sharia.
“The Peace Accord between the Federal Government and Boko Haram brokered by Canon Stephen Davis was never signed by the Federal Government after Boko Haram leaders signed in July 2013. Two of the seven Boko Haram leaders who signed the agreement lost their lives in questionable circumstances.”

Fake news

“Democracy and Sharia are no fake news. Those who cry fake news are those promoting jihad and Taqiyya, so as to provide an excuse for stealth jihad and the protection of jihadists. Unfortunately, Britain seems to have been taken over by Muslims and very soon would need help, if they do not appreciate that it is an ideology (Sharia) that is staring them in the face.”

Fire destroys N200m cashew nursery
 
 

                             
A cashew nursery based in Kobape, Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of Ogun has been razed by fire with 130,000 seedlings and eco-friendly nursery structure estimated at N200 million destroyed.

Owner and Operator of Sotonye Anga Farms, Sotonye Anga, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), yesterday, that the fire started in the early hours of June 1.

Anga said the cashew nursery was the largest in Nigeria and arguably in Africa and had employed over 500 people in the Ogun community since its establishment.

He said it was raining heavily at the time the fire started and no one could say how it started.

“The fire started between 12 mid-night and 1:00 am. The cashew nursery is the largest in Nigeria and Africa.

“The total of cashew seedlings destroyed was 130,000 and its nursery is valued to be about N200 million.

“On the piece of land, we had two nurseries but since they were built apart, one of the nurseries was not torched while one was completely burnt down.

“The nursery was a major employer of labour in the community. We created over 500 jobs. If we had succeeded in taking the seedlings into the field it would have created over 5,000 jobs,’’ he said.

Anga, who is also the national publicity secretary of National Cashew Association of Nigeria (NCAN), said the farm would have significantly contributed to the total cashew production output in Nigeria.

“As sad as the event is, God who gave us the initiative will enable us to rebuild it that is the hope we have.

“Although we tried to salvage it, only about 2,081 seedlings were saved but still they are of no economic benefits because they cannot be planted. So, you see that nothing is left.’’

A police report obtained from Gogo Peters, the farm manager, who had reported the incident to the Owode Egba Divisional Police Headquarters, stated that the fire was caused by thunder and lightning.

Nigerian military officials say the leader of Nigeria’s secessionist group, the Indigenous People of Biafra, (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, is currently on the run.

He reportedly went into hiding after the military declared IPOB as a terrorist organisation.

His whereabouts became unknown since the South East Governors Forum declared the activities of his group as proscribed.

The federal government also filed a suit before the Abuja Federal High Court seeking the revocation of the bail granted to Mr Kanu, who is standing treason trial along with three other people.

Some sources hint that that Kanu might have gone underground and security officials are contemplating about following the legal process by holding his sureties responsible.

Recall that Buhari was said to have travelled to Paris for a peace meeting on Friday and since then he has not returned to Nigeria, this was, as he was not even seen anywhere close to the venue of the meeting in the French capital.


Meanwhile, the Bafran leader had recently alleged that Buhari has died since 2017, and was buried in Saudi Arabia — a claim also made by former British Lawmaker, Eric Joyce.

An Economist, Mr Chijioke Ekechukwu, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to ensure development of stronger economic polices for growth and development.

Ekechukwu made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Wednesday

He said that the first term of four years of President Muhammadu Buhari was filled with some laudable monetary and fiscal policies as well as major developments

“Corruption still bedevils our country with little or no action taken against perpetrators,’’ Ekechukwu said.

He noted that economic policies could be made better to yield good results.

“We need to diversify the economy more by down-playing oil revenue and opening up of other sectors to generate more revenue,’’ he added

.He said the implementation of the Treasury Single Account (TSA) reduced corruption in the civil service and enabled government to track its finances at all times.

Ekechukwu said funding of the agricultural sector through the Anchor Borrowers’ Programme and other avenues remained a great achievement of the country.

According to him, the funding has created many jobs in the rice value chain.

The economist said the infrastructure development of the roads, the railway and airports were worthy of note.

He noted that there had been an improvement in tax being generated by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) compared to previous regimes.

Ekechukwu noted that there had been a remarkable stability in the Foreign Exchange Market, saying that though Nigerians expected the rate to come down further to less than N200 to a dollar.

“The country’s external reserves have grown,’’ he said.

Ekechukwu urged government to address the problem of kidnapping.

He said that the manufacturing sector needed priority attention of both Federal and State Governments.

CRUDE prices trended lower on Thursday after the Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported a weekly build in crude oil inventories at 6.8 million barrels.

Brent crude traded at $61.35 a barrel while West Texas Intermediate (WTI)  traded at $52.62 a barrel.
WTI  had fallen to a session low of $50.66 after the report, the lowest level since Jan. 15. WTI was down $2.19, or 4.1 per cent, at $51.29 a barrel.

Brent futures had also sank as low as $59.45, also its lowest since mid-January. Brent was last down $1.78, or 2.9 per cent, at $60.19 a barrel.

A day earlier, the American Petroleum Institute (API) estimated inventories had gone up by 3.545 million barrels last week, with gasoline inventories also swelling. The report contributed to an already present downward drag on prices.

At 483.3 million barrels, the EIA said, crude oil inventories were some five  per cent above the seasonal average.
In gasoline, the authority reported a build of 3.2 million barrels for the week to May 31. This compares with a decline of 600,000 barrels a week earlier. Gasoline production averaged 10 million bpd last week, compared with 10.1 million bpd a week before.
In distillate fuels, the EIA also reported an inventory build, of 4.6 million barrels for last week, which compares with a minor draw of 200,000 barrels a week earlier. Refineries churned out 5.4 million bpd of distillates last week, up from 5.1 million bpd a week earlier.

The EIA figures for crude oil will hardly provide any relief for prices as trade war-related concern about the global economy deepens. Earlier this week, Deutsche Bank said in a note to clients the tariff push by Washington has so far cost the U.S. financial market some $5 trillion in lost stock appreciation opportunities. According to the bank, the average annual stock growth rate since 2009 has been 12.5 per cent but in the past 12 months, this has slumped to less than one per cent mainly on the back of the U.S.-China trade war.

In addition to this concern, Rosneft’s Igor Sechin yesterday spoke out openly against an extension to the production cuts into the second half of the year and said Rosneft would seek compensation from the Kremlin if it decides to stay in the deal.

To bridge the gap in Nigeria’s education sector and enable it contribute effectively to economic development, Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals has embarked on an integrated tripartite approach to boost quality of education in the public schools around host communities in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos.

The approach includes a scholarship programme for students, a Train-the-Trainers Capacity Building Initiative for teachers and school infrastructure projects to improve the quality of education in the communities.

To ensure students receive quality education, Dangote Oil Refinery and Petrochemicals, in collaboration with NurtureHouse Limited, a company founded to strengthen quality education through enhanced teaching and learning and capacity development of teachers, organised a capacity building programme for secondary school teachers and principals in Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos recently. The training sessions were delivered using practical, hands-on approach to learning. The sessions provided participants with opportunities to collaborate as well as practice knowledge and skills acquired.

At the end of each session, the participants were guided on reflective practices and action planning to encourage implementation of skills acquired when they return to their schools.

Teachers were exposed to 21st Century best practices in “Cognitive Development and Impact on Learning” as well as “Effective Pedagogical Skills”. The personal action plans produced at the end of the two-day Professional Development Programme is expected to motivate the teachers to implement their plans.

Atiku Weighs Options on Delay in Replacement for Bulkachuwa
 
 
                           
The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, is weighing his options on how to get the Court of Appeal, which is serving as the tribunal of first instance, to proceed with the hearing of his petition, challenging the declaration of President Muhammadu Buhari as the winner of the February 23 presidential election.

The hearing of the petition suffered a major setback on May 22 when the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa, recused herself from the tribunal’s sitting, after the judicial panel had delivered judgment in a petition in which Atiku and the PDP demanded that she should step aside due to perceived conflict of interest.


The tribunal, on May 22, had dismissed the petition in which Atiku and the PDP alleged that they might suffer a miscarriage of justice given the fact that Justice Bulkachuwa’s husband, Alhaji Adamu Bulkachuwa, who is a senator-elect, and her son, Mr. Aliyu Abubakar, a governorship aspirant, belong to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

But despite the dismissal of the petition, Justice Bulkachuwa decided to step aside for personal reasons.
However, since her stepping aside, efforts by both Atiku and the PDP to get her to nominate her replacement at the tribunal, so that the hearing of the petition could continue have been fruitless.

Statutorily, the five-man tribunal is expected to deliver its judgment 180 days from the day the petition is filed.
Atiku and the PDP filed their petition against the emergence of Buhari on March 18.

Justice Bulkachuwa’s delay in naming her replacement prompted Atiku’s lawyers to file a fresh petition last week over what they described as a deliberate ploy to truncate the constitutional deadline for the hearing of his petition against the victory of the president.

Sources close to the former vice-president told THISDAY wednesday that he was considering what other steps to take to get Justice Bulkachuwa to perform her statutory duty.

Among the options Atiku is considering include writing a fresh petition to the National Judicial Council (NJC) or resorting to diplomacy in getting the trial started.

One of the sources who is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) on the legal team of Atiku, who craved anonymity, said they would wait and see the outcome of their letter before taking any further decisions.

He said: “We have written a letter complaining that there is a delay. So, if we wait for sometimes and no action is taken, we will proceed with the next step, which may involve submitting a fresh petition to the NJC or using diplomatic approach.”

Another source said the PDP’s legal team had not received any response to the letter it wrote to the Appeal Court president, asking her to appoint a replacement.

“If there is no response to our letter, a meeting would be called to see what steps to be taken next,” the source said, adding: “Just as the meeting decided to write the letter, so another meeting would decide the next option.”
Also reacting to the delay on the part of Justice Bulkachuwa to appoint her replacement, a lawyer, Mr. Kalu Kalu, said she had no choice but to do so.

According to him, the delay may be part of a larger plan to delay further hearing of the petition.
He advised against going to court to force Justice Bulkachuwa to appoint a replacement.

But Kalu agreed that Atiku could approach the NJC over alleged dereliction of duty on the part of the President of Court of Appeal or still employ some level of diplomacy in handling the matter.

He said: “It is something that she must do; it is not discretionary; it is mandatory that she does it. However, one of the options left for Atiku is to petition her to the NJC because if you say you should go to court, which court would you start from?

“And if you go to court, it means that they have achieved their aim of delaying the case because all they are doing now is to delay considering that once it is 180 days everything becomes a nullity. That is what they are targeting.

“So, the only option left for Atiku is to petition her to NJC for dereliction of duty because one cannot fathom why two weeks after she recused herself till today, she has not appointed a replacement.

“Nevertheless, it would be better to be a little diplomatic about the whole thing because if you say you are taking her to NJC, she can say let me go there and face the consequences once and for all.”

Atiku in a letter dated May 31, 2019, had expressed worry that 11 days after Justice Bulkachuwa disqualified herself from the tribunal, following the petition of the PDP and the Atiku/Obi’s legal team, the appellate court was yet to name her replacement.

The former vice-president, in the letter by his counsel, Mr. Levy Uzoukwu (SAN), urged the President of the Court of Appeal to appoint a replacement forthwith, since she knows the tribunal has a timeline to prosecute the petitions.

He reminded the appellate court that already, 76 days had been expended out of the 180 days allowed by law, as stipulated in Section 134 (2) and (3) of the Electoral Act (2010 as amended).
The petition stated: “I am one (Silas Joseph) of the counsel in the legal team prosecuting the above petition on behalf of the petitioners.

“I have the authority of the lead counsel, Dr. Livy Uzoukwu (SAN), to write this letter. My Lord will recall that on May 22, 2019, the above-mentioned petition came up for a motion requesting that My Lord to recuse herself from further presiding or participating in this petition. At the end of the proceedings, My Lord graciously recused herself on ‘personal grounds’ and promised to appoint another justice to continue with the petition.

“My Lord, it is nine days since the date My Lord recused herself and nothing has been heard regarding the replacement that was to be made thereafter.

“Considering the strict requirement of keeping to the constitutional calendar for a petition and the obvious fact that time is also running fast against the petitioners. We pray My Lord to act timeously in appointing a replacement so that we will get a hearing notice and continue with the petition in the interest of justice.”

Parish Priest Commits Suicide After Been accused Of Sexual Assault With Under Age girl
 




The entire Catholic Church  has been thrown into mourning as a popular parish priest committed suicide in Ivory Coast after he was accused of sexually assaulting a young under-aged- girl. 

 The clergyman identified as Rev.Father Richard Bilé of Saint Francis of Assisi D ‘Affiénou (Maferé) parish in  Ivory Coast hanged himself on Wednesday in his resident after he was made to testify in the case of paedophilia on the under-age girl, according to Presse Cote d’ivoire.

The news of his death came as a shock after the church council reportedly met a few days ago for a meeting and then notified the priest, on Tuesday, April 23, of their decision to temporarily suspend him over the sexual molestation case. After he was notified of the council’s decision to suspend him,  Rev.Father Richard was found dead at about 4pm on Wednesday after he appeared to have hanged himself.He also left a suicide note, where he wrote that “Near God, I will have peace. God’s world is too harsh and does things elusive …

”The diocese of South-West Cote d’Ivoire through its communication officer, Father Lambert LathY edo confirmed the death of Rev.Father Richard Bilé. According to him, the first elements of the investigation seem to privilege the suicide trail by hanging.

The inmates, many of which were skinned and malnourished have been successfully rescued and were in the custody of the police.

The owner and operator of the shrine, Alfa Oloore as he is fondly called has been arrested and detained by the police for questioning.

According to some of the residents who spoke with our correspondent, Alfa Oloore, who claimed to be a spiritualist and a healer has been operating the shrine for many years with suspicion and dread.

They described the shrine as a den of ritualists and kidnappers, where unsuspecting victims were kept for ritual purposes.

When contacted, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Gbenga Fadeyi confirmed the arrest of the operator of the shrine and evacuation of the inmates by the police.

Fadeyi, a Superintendent of Police (SP) further stated that the truth about whether the shrine is a den for ritualists and kidnappers was yet to be determined until the police conclude investigation into the matter.

He said ” I can confirm that there was arrest of the owner of the shrine where many inmates were recovered. But, some people came later to the police station to say they were the ones who gave their children to the owner of the shrine, who they also claimed to be a spiritualist.

” In fact, some of those recovered from the shrine had issues, some behave like drug addicts, some like mentally challenged and so on. But what the police want to do is to embark on thorough investigation into the matter and come up with a report. “

A successful businessman in China has been executed after being found guilty of raping 25 underage female students, according to a court. 


Zhao Zhiyong had sexually assaulted the young victims on 32 occasions in the space of one and a half years. He was sentenced to death for raping last October before being executed yesterday June 4th, according to the Kaifeng Intermediate People's Court in central China's Henan Province. 


In an online statement, the court said Zhao had colluded with an accomplice, named Li Na, who was responsible for scouting for victims. Between May 2015 and January 2017, Li brought underage girls to hotels or Zhao's home for him to have sexual intercourse with by force. 


The court said it carried out the execution after receiving an order from the Supreme Court. Zhao was said to be an influential businessman in Kaifeng. He owned a large flour factory and was the deputy head of the Kaifeng Chamber of Commerce, according to Chinese news outlet The Paper.


Zhao, 49, had sent Li to look for 'young female pupils' from middle schools in the county of Weishi so that he could have sex with them. Li, together with eight accomplices, forced the victims to sleep with Zhao by beating them, intimidating them and taking pictures of their privates as threats.


The notice added that Zhao had raped 25 middle school students on 32 occasions, including 14 girls who were not yet 14 years old. Zhao's accomplice Li was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve.

We Don't Have Powers To Investigate Lawmaker's Fraud Case - INEC

Quote:As Femi Gbajabiamila continues to sink to deeper in the scandal of the fraud case that occurred in the United States of America more than a decade ago, for which he was found guilty by the Supreme Court of Georgia, US, his biggest ally, President Muhammadu Buhari and his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) have kept mute.

It is not clear whether Buhari will call for a probe into the dinghy past of the lawmaker, whom the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, publicly claimed is Buhari's anointed candidate for the House of Representatives' speakership.

However, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said it does not have the constitutional power to investigate the allegations of fraud and conviction against Femi Gbajabiamila by a US court. 

The National Commissioner and Chairman, Voter Education and Information, Festus Okoye disclosed this when SaharaReporters inquired if the commission will withdraw the certificate of return of the lawmaker and prosecute him for lying on oath. 

Okoye said that the commission did not have power to arrest or investigate the allegations levelled against the lawmaker. 

Though he admitted that the commission is empowered to prosecute any electoral offenders if the commission receive a report to that effect from the appropriate authority. 

He noted that it is a pre-election matter, adding that anybody or group who is aggrieved should make a formal complaint to the appropriate authority charged with the responsibility to make arrest and investigate. 

Okoye stated that INEC has not received any formal report from any authority regarding the matter.

He pointed out that the commission had conducted elections and published the names of the winners and if there is an evidence that somebody is not qualified then the person should channel his complaint to the authority that is charged with that responsibility. 

He stressed that the issue now is for the appropriate agencies to investigate the allegation before the commission can prosecute. 

A public affairs analyst, Mr. Jide Ojo, stated that the issue of US conviction has become a recurring decimal, adding that it is not an issue that concerns INEC. He explained that it is only the court of competent jurisdiction that can make a consequential order on the matter. 

Ojo noted that the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) should allow the court to decide the case on its merit. He maintained that it is only the court that can order the withdrawal of Gbajabiamila's certificate of return. 

He argued that the electoral umpire cannot institute any investigation on the matter stressing that the Electoral Act only give the prosecutorial power to the electoral body.

The analyst wondered how the court can decide the case ahead of the inauguration of the ninth national assembly which has been slated for June 11, 2019. 

Efforts to get the reaction of Mr. Smart Olanrewaju, Media Assistant to the Femi Gbajabiamila was unsuccessful as his mobile phone was switched off. 

President Muhammadu Buhari and the All Progressives Congress (APC ) have not made any official comment or statement regarding the matter.

Earlier on Wednesday the Femi/Wase Campaign Group at a press conference denied the allegations of Gbajabiamila's conviction and threatened to take a legal action against CUPP.

Kidnappers murder 78-year-old mother of ex-lawmaker, Hon. Kate Owoko






Madam Ayoko Owoko, the abducted 78-year-old mother of a former member of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly representing Southern Ijaw Constituency I, Hon. Kate Owoko has been found dead.  
 
Her body was dumped by the riverside in Amassoma area of the state. Family sources on Wednesday confirmed that the corpse of the septuagenarian was found on Tuesday night along the Ogbein-South riverside of Southern Ijaw community of Ammassoma.  
 
The late Owoko was abducted from her home in Ammasoma on April 17 by six armed men and a ransom was demanded. The negotiation, however, stalled following the alleged refusal of her daughter to pay the ransom.  
 
"Yes, the corpse of our mother was discovered yesterday night. She was abducted on the 17th of April. The incident is unfortunate," a family member told SaharaReporters on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak with the press.  
 
He, however, blamed the death of the kidnap victim on the "refusal" of the lawmaker to pay the ransom. "The kidnappers demanded a ransom. But she refused to pay. She told the kidnappers that she had no money," the family member said.  
 
The spokesman for Bayelsa State Police Command, DSP Asimin Butswat, confirmed the kidnap victim's death but said the police is still investigating the incident

The Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal has been asked to determine whether President Muhammadu Buhari supplied false information about his educational qualification and certificates, in the Form CF001 he submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, before the 2019 general elections.

The appellate court is in an appeal marked CA/A/436/2019, further urged to determine whether the office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, is competent to file processes to defend the allegation that President Buhari lied on oath about his qualifications.
The appeal was lodged by three litigants, Kalu Agu, Labaran Ismail and Hassy El-Kuris, who identified themselves as electorates and taxpayers.

The trio, are challenging the dismissal of a suit they filed against President Buhari prior to the presidential election.
Trial Justice Ahmed Mohammed of the Federal High Court in Abuja had in a judgment last month, dismissed the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1310/2018, on the premise that it was statute barred.

Cited as defendants in the matter were President Buhari, the All Progressives Congress, APC, and INEC.

Meanwhile, in their four grounds of appeal, the appellant contended that the high court judge erred by relying on a preliminary objection that was filed on behalf of President Buhari by the AGF, to dismiss the suit.

Citing several decided cases, the appellants argued that, “The Attorney General or a lawyer in his office cannot appear or file processes for the 1st Defendant”.

Besides, they urged the Court of Appeal to determine, “Whether the Learned Trial Judge was right in holding that the suit was statute-barred by computing the number of days from the 28th day of September 2018 when the 2nd Respondent held its primary election wherein the 1st Respondent was elected as a candidate of the 2ndRespondent?

“Arising from the foregoing it is our submission that the Learned Trial Judge was, with respect, wrong to have held that the objection to the representation by the Attorney General and ipso facto the processes was belated in that there was no objection to the appearance of the law officers and that the Appellants reacted to the processes filed. A court must be guided by the process before it:

“It is evident from the processes and proceedings before the court that there was a frontal challenge by the Appellants to the processes filed on behalf of the 1st Respondent by the law officers. The court was bound to rule on this issue and not sweep it under the carpet.

“Howbeit, it is further submitted that it is settled law that the issue of competence of proceedings or a process cannot be waived when the challenge goes to the fundamental nature of the process and not merely on a procedural aspect of the process:

“In the circumstances of the foregoing, we urge Your Lordship to hold that the reliance of the Court on the processes and the refusal to strike them out was wrong.

“Further, we urge Your Lordship to reverse the decision of the Court, assume original jurisdiction on the matter and strike out all the processes filed by the 1st Respondent’s Counsel.
“By Section 31(5) of the Electoral Act, it is the information given by the 1st Respondent, the candidate to the 3rd Respondent that is the subject matter of this suit.

“It is, with respect, inconceivable that, in the light of the clear and express provisions of Section 31 of the Electoral Act and the reliefs sought, the Court reasoned that the Appellants could be challenging the information set out in a document submitted to a political party by an aspirant.

“It is, with respect, self-evident that Section 285(9) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) cannot be referable to an event occurring at the primary election of a party since the document in issue is a post-primary document.

“In the instant case it is our submission that the cause of action is not yet complete until the time “any person”, in this case, the Appellants, “… has reasonable grounds to believe that any information given by a candidate in the affidavit or any document submitted by that candidate is false…” as provided in Section 31(5) of the Electoral Act. The document in issue in the context of the overall provision of Section 31 is only referable to a document submitted to the 3rd Respondent which is the one exhibited and referred to in all the processes before the court.

“With respect, what the court below did was to create a situation, not within the contemplation of the law and upon that basis initiate dismissal of the suit. In the circumstances of the foregoing we urge Your Lordship to reverse the decision of the Learned Trial Judge and hold that the suit is not statute barred.

“In conclusion, we submit that the decision of the Court below be reversed on the following grounds:
“That the processes filed by the first Respondent are incompetent and ought to be struck out.

“That the suit is not statute-barred as it does not question any act or event occurring at the 2nd Respondent’s primary election.
“That the Court assumes jurisdiction over the suit and grants the reliefs sought at the lower court since we have demonstrated in paragraph 2:7 above that there is no counter affidavit known to law in opposition to the Originating Summons and ipso facto the reliefs sought”, the appellants added.

The striking members of the Imo State chapter of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) have called off their two-month-long industrial action after meeting with the state Governor, Emeka Ihedioha.

The doctors who are in the employment of the state government had embarked on industrial action in April following the non-implementation of the agreement reached with the immediate past administration headed by Owelle Rocha Okorocha on increased funding for the health sector, full payment of their salaries, as well as the payment of their three-months arrears.

However, State Chairman of the NMA, Dr Duruewuru Kyrian said in a press briefing on Wednesday that they decided to call off their strike after meeting Governor Ihedioha at the Government House.

According to him, “we have decided to call off our industrial strike following a meeting with Governor Emeka Ihedioha today (Wednesday) at the Government House.

“At the meeting, we had tabled our grievances which include rehabilitation of the access road to the Imo State University Teaching Hospital in Umuna Orlu, payment of 100 per cent salaries of medical doctors in the employment of the state and the payment of our three-months of arrears.

“He also agreed to provide more funding and re-equipping of the state General Hospitals.”

Bandits kill 16 in Zamfara on Sallah day

Bandits were said to have allegedly killed 16 persons in Kanoma District of Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara on Sallah day.

Confirming the attack in a press statement in Gusau on Wednesday, the Director-General on Media to the state governor, Yusuf Idris, said “the governor visited the community and sympathised with them”.

“During the visit, the governor also directed security agencies to immediately “swing” into action and bring the perpetrators to book.

“The governor also directed the movement of 14 persons, who sustained injuries from gunshots from Kanoma General Hospital, to the Federal Medical Centre, Gusau, for better medical care.

”The bill should be charged to the state government,” he said.

He then expressed the state governor’s resolve to join hands with well-meaning individuals and groups in the state to bring an end to armed banditry in the state.

He said the District Head of Kanoma, Yahaya Mohammed, had told the governor that the bandits invaded the area in the evening and fired gunshots sporadically, which led to the death of the 16 persons, with 14 injured.

 A 35-year-old man, Chris Azuoma, has been arrested for allegedly attempting to abort the pregnancy of a 15-year-old girl who he got pregnant.
 
Activist Harrison Emefiena Gwamnishu who shared the story online, said his team received a tipoff today that Chris brought an underaged girl to a hospital in Ogidi, Anambra state to get an abortion. Gwamnishu said his team hurried to the hospital where they arrested Chris.

She confirmed the story and the perpetrator confessed forcefully having unprotected sexual intercourse with the victim.
