Ohanaeze attacks Buhari, lists ways Igbo are marginalised in Nigeria
[Image: buhari-face.jpg]

President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Nnia Nwodo, has attacked President Muhammadu Buhari for refusing to implement the report of the community set up by the All Progressives Congress, APC, for the purpose of restructuring the country.
The APC had set up a committee on restructuring headed by the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai and they came up with the report that was accepted by the national leadership of the party.

Nwodo said the President has not been faithful to his manifesto, adding that he (Buhari) is looking for his own personal interest.
Nwodo, speaking on Arise TV, said the military carefully structured the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria against Ndigbo.
The Ohanaeze Ndigbo President-General noted that the constitution was based on extreme discrimination and jaundiced against the Igbo people.

“The military designed a constitution at the end of the war to contain the Igbo.
“We have the smallest number of local governments of all the six geopolitical zones; smallest number of representatives in the National Assembly; the smallest number of local government councils, two states in the North West of Nigeria have as much local governments as we have in the South East,” he said.
“The president has not been faithful to his manifesto. After he won the election, his party set up a committee on restructuring headed by Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai and they made this report that which was accepted by the national leadership of his party,” he added.

“And when he faced interviewed by the press, he said that our problem was not structure but process.
“He swallowed his manifesto; he swallowed the decision of his national executive committee and he says we are looking for our personal interest. It’s rather the president that is looking for his own personal interest,” Nwodo stated.

BBNaija: Biggie under attack for issuing strike to Ike, exempting Seyi
[Image: ike-seyi.jpg]

Big Brother Naija, BBNaija organizers have come under attack for issuing strike to housemate, Ike.
Biggie on Monday night issued another strike to Ike for attempting to attack a fellow housemate, Seyi.

Biggie’s judgement has since been criticized by Nigerians for his failure to issue Seyi a strike for provoking Ike.
DAILY POST had reported that Biggie issued Joe a strike for provoking Tacha to violence.
BBNaija fans took to their social media to vent their anger over Ike’s strike, stating that the reality show has been biased.

Some accused Biggie of being partial and in favour of Seyi.
Here are some comments gathered by DAILY POST from Twitter:
@Idybongay “So Seyi that used abusive Yoruba words nko without interpreting goes free without a strike. hmmmm, Biggie you are partial.”

@Afrochic “Tacha shoved Mike, provoked Frodd, Tacha hit Joe, Biggie: 1 strike
“Joe provoked Tacha, Biggie: 1 strike, Ike provoked Seyi Biggie gave him 1 strike
“Seyi provoked Ike but nothing from Biggie, Biggie, you’re a FRAUD.”

@Xameicce “Dear Big Brother,in my honest opinion Tacha deserves atleast two strikes , I feel biggie hates Ike ,two strikes is bullshit! Seyi deserves a strike for cursing Thelma’s late brother.”
@Pat7alfred “I disagree with Biggie on the last one, aggrieved Ike was seated outside and Seyi came out attacking him. How’s that not provocation.”

@Kaykay “It’s obvious Biggie is playing games. Tacha gets 1 Strike for multiple fightings and altercations with HMs. Seyi gets none for cursing Thelma’s late bro, provoking Ike.”

@Davechuks_008 “I’m sure SEYI is related to big brother, same guy that was disqualified from participating in the veto power game and was later pardoned. Same guy won HOH even when it was clear someone else did better than him. Nigga is biggie’s favourite well done o.”

@Ogabossman “Why should Only Ike get that strike, Seyi should have benefited from it too because he provoked him and also insulted him using Tribal language.”
@Mitchel_Chris “Dear Biggie, since you like people who curse and insult, may you be cursed too.How about Seyi’s constant use of Yoruba in cursing? How about Tacha’s constant abuses to Frodd, slapping cigarettes from Ike, throwing issues at Mike. She deserved 5 strikes but, f**k you.”

@Tuneisfavoured “Biggie you’ve just shown you have zero entertainment skills. How dare you issue IKE a second strike and look past what Tasha and Seyi did?No wonder people want the show shutdown.”

@Kgomotso_tau “Biggie Ike gets a strike for what exactly? Why did you avoid to show Seyi video for cursing Thelma’s family? Where’s the video of Seyi claiming Niger boys will run down Ike? Is this show bias? Are you running a scam na? Where is consistency? Ebuka we need answers.”

Biafra: Why God won’t hear your prayers yet – Fani-Kayode tells Gowon
[Image: Femi-Fani-Kayode.jpg]

Former Minister of Aviation and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has told former Military Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon, that the various prayer sessions he is conducting would be wasted if he (Gowon) does not apologise to the Igbos over the genocide against them during the 1966 Civil War.
The former Minister conveyed this in a statement he signed on Monday, adding that 300 Igbo army officers, including an Igbo Head of State, were murdered on July 29th, 1966 by northern army officers.

He also reminded the war lord that 30,000 innocent and defenceless Igbo civilians were slaughtered between September and December 1966 by savage and barbaric northern mobs in three separate pogroms in the north before the outbreak of the Nigerian civil war.
“Finally 3 million innocent and defenceless Igbo civilians, including one million children, were targeted and butchered by the Nigerian Army and the northern ‘Gwodo-Gwodo’ auxiliaries and militias during the Nigerian civil war between 1967 and 1970.
“General Yakubu Gowon can conduct all the prayer sessions that he wants for Nigeria but until he acknowledges the fact that the genocide that the Igbo people were subjected to under his watch between 1966 and 1970 was unacceptable and until he appeals to the Igbo nation to forgive Nigeria for what we did to them, things will get from bad to worse.

“Though it is unknown to most, our nation has been afflicted with a deep spiritual wound which was inflicted as a consequence of our barbaric actions over the years and particularly before and during the civil war. This is a spiritual matter and sadly and regrettably we see its consequences unfolding in the physical realm before our very eyes every day.
“The shedding of innocent blood always results in divine retribution and it goes from generation to generation. Unless remorse is displayed, forgiveness sought and national repentance is established the cycle of divine retribution and judgement will continue unabated and affect the lives of millions.
“The civil war “Gwodo-Gwodo” militias, made up of savage, bloodthirsty, heartless, godless, dark and evil men from Chad, Niger Republic, Mali and parts of north-western Nigeria are the spiritual forefathers and the same dark forces that have resurrected as terrorist and killer herdsmen that are slaughtering our people ALL over the country today.

“The whole thing has come back to torment and haunt us and only God can deliver us from their hand. The fastest way to make your nation the land of the accursed and rejected is by continuously shedding innocent blood and showing no remorse for it.
“We must recognise and accept this, we must endavour to stop the violence and killings, we must beg God and our victims for forgiveness and we must do the right thing. Anything short of that will not put us on the road to redemption and restoration. May God open our eyes to see and accept these harsh realities and may He guide, help and lead us in all our endeavours.”
The PDP chieftain said Nigerians needed to ask the Lord for forgiveness for what they did and what they were still doing to the Igbo nation if they really wanted to be restored to the great and prosperous nation and people that they once were.

RHAPSODY OF REALITIES

TUESDAY, 13TH AUGUST

HE KEEPS YOU FROM FALLING

Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen (Jude 1:24-25).

Some Christians sing certain songs that dissipate their faith and don’t express the realities of our new nature. For example, someone sings, “Jesus loves me, and I love Him too, because every time I fall, He lifts me up.” That’s unscriptural; it sounds nice and wonderful, but it doesn’t express our place in Christ, and our inheritance in Him.

The Bible doesn’t say that Jesus lifts us up every time we fall. Rather, it says, “He’s able to keep us from falling,” which is more sublime. When you live with the mentality that every time you fall, He picks you up, you’re going to keep falling and expecting Him to lift you up; that’s not His ministry. His ministry is to keep you from falling. When you trust Him, as the One who’s able to keep you from falling, you’ll never fall. Glory to God!

He’s the Rock that holds you firm and secure, and He’s doing it for a reason: to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy. Blessed be God! Every so often, declare, “The Lord is able to keep me from falling.” It’s a statement of faith; your faith in His redemptive work, which was perfect and of eternal significance.

There’s another portion of Scripture where the Spirit referenced a similar thought through the Apostle Peter in 2 Peter 1:1-10. There, the Spirit highlighted several virtues and factors for spiritual effectiveness for the Christian. Study the entire reference. Verse 10 says, “…if you do these things, you will never fall” (NIV). How comforting. How assuring!

We’re not of them that rise and fall. We’re forever standing strong. Ephesians 6:14 says, “Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth….” Have the consciousness that in your journey of faith, you’ll forever be standing strong and courageous for the Gospel. None of your steps shall slide, because the Lord is your Rock and your Defence. Through His Word, He preserves you; He keeps you safe and from falling, until His return. Hallelujah!

PRAYER

Dear heavenly Father, I thank you for the great love with which you’ve loved me. You uphold me with the right hand of your righteousness that I may never stumble or fall. None of my steps shall slide, because I walk in your Word, and by the Spirit, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

#TALKINGSESSION

13TH AUGUST.

KINDLY SAY THESE WORDS OUT LOUD

Dear heavenly Father, I thank for Your Word is working mightily in me. My spirit, soul, and body are completely yielded to Your Word; thus, I refuse to entertain doubts in my heart, for I know faith always works. My faith is the victory that overcomes the world; it’s also the only proof I require to know that the things I’ve hoped for are now my present-hour possessions. Lord, I thank You for Your Word is a light unto me; it clears the darkness from my path and enriches me daily.

I thank you for showing me how to live the victorious life. I live by faith and not by sensory perceptions. I dominate the circumstances of my life today and declare that all things are working together for my good, in the mighty Name of Jesus. Amen

God bless you

BBNaija housemate Khafi faces sack by MET Police as she's being investigated after sex on the show

Big Brother Naija housemate and Met Police officer, Khafi Kareem, 29, is being investigated for having sex on the show despite warning from her bosses not to take part.

A Met spokesman said last night: "A PC, attached to the Met's transformation command, requested permission to take part in a reality television entertainment show in Nigeria. Permission was not given.

"The Met is aware the officer has since appeared on the show without authority.

"The Directorate of Professional Standards has been informed and will be carrying out an investigation into the circumstances.

"The Met does not support the officer's appearance nor does she represent the Met whilst appearing on the show."

The force added that any officer found to have breached police standards of professional behaviour could face misconduct proceedings.

The 29-year-old UK based, who was once a 'poster girl' for the promotion of female and black staff for Met Police and earns about £30,000 a year, was said to have forcefully left her job for the show.

It was also reported that the authorities made the move to start an investigation as she became the talk of the show after videos of her having sex with her love interest Gedoni went viral online.

Her TV appearances have left colleagues unimpressed. Speaking on the issue, an unnamed colleague told The SUN newspaper: "She's a serving British police officer - it's outrageous.
"She asked permission to go on the show but, when her request was refused, she went anyway."

Another Met source said: “There should be no way back for her from this and her superiors will have to act.
“She fitted the mould perfectly for how the modern force wants to portray itself but seems to have got a bit too big for her boots.
“It’s hard to see how can she argue that she hasn’t brought the force into disrepute.”

Meanwhile, Khafi is currently up for possible eviction.

Sterling Bank invests in Billion Dollar Non-Oil Revenue Sector

 August 11, 2019

Leading Nigerian commercial bank and Africa’s most agile company, Sterling Bank Plc has announced its investment in the global multi-billion-dollar software engineering sector in partnership with Decagon Institute.
Speaking at a press conference recently, Khafil Animashaun, Head, Strategy & Innovation at Sterling Bank, disclosed that Decagon’s mission of training 5,000 software engineers, creating 30,000 jobs, and generating about $1 billion in export revenue over the next five years aligns with the bank’s vision of improving the H.E.A.R.T (Health, Education, Agriculture, Renewable Energy and Transport) sectors. The partnership with Decagon Institute is part of the bank’s intervention in the education sector through investment in ideas and execution of projects that will advance it.
“Sterling is working with Decagon to identify and transform young talented Nigerians into world-class software developers at scale. We are certain our investment will bridge the software development talent shortage in the country’s fast-growing technology ecosystem while also positioning our youth to compete in the fast-paced global software engineering market”, Animashaun added.
Chika Nwobi, Founder, Decagon Institute with almost two decades experience of incubatingstartups that include Jobberman, Cheki and MTech, says his dream of working with local talents to solve local problems is about to be achieved through the partnership with Sterling Bank to train 5,000 software developers in 5 years.
He revealed that many startups in Nigeria are modelled after Silicon Valley patterns, but where Silicon Valley has a surplus of talents, many of these startups use the funding to get developers from other countries and this leads to fast depletion of the funds among other disadvantages. Considering that Nigeria has a youthful population with 63% of these youth unemployed, he believes that there remains a huge untapped talent pool and this initiative would help develop software engineers who would be trained to be at par with their mates in other countries.
“Through this partnership, Nigeria can serve the global demand for software engineers alongside countries like India with about 3.9 million software engineers across the world generating over $20 billion dollars annually in revenue which is about four times the value of Nigeria’s 2018 oil revenue”, enthused Mr. Nwobi.
Decagon Institute through the students’ loan acquired from Sterling Bank provides accommodation, feeding, work tools, tutoring and a monthly stipend of N45,000 throughout the six-months training duration.
The admission is gotten purely on merit although there is a desire of having a 50% female inclusion in the program to increase female participation in tech.
The students, who are called ‘Decadevs’, undergo a rigorous training process which is required to produce world-class Software developers.

The mishap also destroyed property worth millions of naira at a residence beside the “B” Division Police Station.

DAILY POST reports that details are still sketchy as to what may have caused the explosion which occurred at about 1 pm.
The explosion pulled off a portion of the building’s foundation wherein the couple resides.
The collapsed building trapped the injured Philip, a security guard with one of the banks, with his wife as they begged for help while the fire was raging.

It took the swift intervention of officials the Delta State Fire Service to quench the raging fire and save it from spreading.
When contacted, the Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Adeyinka Adeleke, in a telephone chat with our correspondent, confirmed the report.
Adeleke simply said, “They said it’s true. The DPO said there was no fatality. That’s what we discussed.”

Father Mbaka speaks on God ‘being angry with Buhari’

The Spiritual Leader of Adoration Ministry Enugu, Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka has denied saying that God is angry with President Muhammadu Buhari.
There was a viral social media report that he (Mbaka) prophesied doom in Aso Rock on October 1st.

The cleric made the denial in a statement made available to pressmen on Monday, describing it as the handiwork of his enemies.
The said report was entitled, “Mbaka releases dangerous prophesy, says God is angry with Buhari”.
Refuting the report, Mbaka said, “Please fellow children of God, help me to tell the world that, I Rev Fr Mbaka Ejike Camillus never prophesied anything about 1st October.

“That is not from me. I have not told anyone, at any time or place that I will resign from priesthood by 1st October.
“That is the handiwork of my demonic enemies.
“I don’t hold Adoration Ministry on Thursday as the story claims and I never at any time told anyone that heavy rain will fall upon Aso Rock and that God is angry with President Buhari.

“The spreading media report is a wicked character assassination from the accursed demonic agents of darkness.
“I never prophesied anything about 1st October nor against Mr President. Why are people attracting curses and God ‘s vengeance upon themselves.”

40-year-old Indian actress Pradnya Parkar, allegedly strangulated her teenage daughter and then committed suicide at their Kalwa residence in Gauri Suman Society on Friday morning, Thane Police said.

Pradnya Parkar allegedly left behind suicide note admitting to the murder-suicide and said she was under extreme stress. Her daughter Shruti, 17, was an HSC student at a Thane college.

Preliminary reports by the police suggested that Parkar, who worked in several Marathi serials and an unreleased Marathi movie, was not getting much work these days and her husband too was facing problems in his business. The neighbours said she had been home without work for many months.

A senior police inspector of Kalwa police station, Shekhar Bagde said the deceased had also come to know that her husband was having an affair.

The incident apparently took place between 8 and 9 in the morning when her husband had gone to the gym.

On return, he found the door of the flat locked from inside. With help from neighbours, he broke down the door and found his wife hanging from the ceiling fan and his daughter suffocated to death in the bedroom. Further probe is on.

“We think a financial crisis led to the murder-suicide, but a probe is under way,” said Shekhar Bagde, adding that the actress left a note taking responsibility for her actions. “She said no one else should be blamed for this,” Bagde added.

Police arrest man for raping and impregnating his daughter in Ogun state

The Ogun State Police Command on Saturday August 10, arrested a 52-year-old man identified as Emmanuel Ikhine for raping and impregnating his 18-year-old biological daughter.

The suspect's arrest came after one Yemisi Ashade reported the issue to the police in company of the victim. The randy man's daughter had told Ashade about the sexual abuses her father subjected her to and threats of dealing with her if she tells anybody.

Confirming the arrest, the state's police spokesperson Abimbola Oyeyemi said the victim shared her plight with Ashade after she got fed up with it.

Quote:Oyeyemi said “The Divisional Police Officer, Sango Ota, Godwin Idehai, a Chief Superintendent of Police(CPS), detailed his detectives to the scene where the randy father was promptly arrested.
“On interrogation, he made a confessional statement that he has been having carnal knowledge of the victim long before now since he has separated with his wife.
“The victim who claimed to be the only girl amongst the three children of her father explained how the suspect has been sleeping with her whenever her two brothers are not around with threat, but when she can not bear it, she reported to their neighbour who brought her to the station to report.
“The victim was taken to general hospital where it was confirmed that she is already pregnant for her father.
“The Commissioner of Police, Bashir makama has directed that the suspect should be transferred to anti-human trafficking and child labour unit of the state criminal investigation and intelligence department for further investigation and prosecution.”

29-year-old Simon Godwin Idoko, a First Class Graduate of Pure and Applied Chemistry from the Usmanu Danfodiyo University in Sokoto State, has been confirmed dead few days after passing out of the National Youth and Service Corps (NYSC) program.

Simon who wrote JAMB six times before gaining admission for his first degree, served as a graduate assistant at Godfrey Okoye University in Enugu State before his death. A friend of the deceased, Ameh Godwin confirmed the sad incident in a tribute he shared on Facebook.

He wrote;

Quote:Ogbee! This sounds unbelievable and heartbreaking. You made us proud by graduating with first class after writing UTME (JAMB) six times, today, you have been snatched by the cold hands of death in a mysterious way.
How do I explain this to those who celebrated your academic feat with me Just three weeks after your NYSC, you went the way of all mortals.
We spoke few days ago and you promised you were going to be fine. What happened? Is this the 'fine' you assured me?
This is sad. Simon Godwin Idoko, please tell my brother, Prince Ameh Jerry, that; this is what the world has been reduced to.
Tell him the fences he left behind have fallen and strangers now pull down our beards.
Tell him we now swim in tears and pains. Tell him our arms have broken and termites have destroyed our homes. What a wicked world.
Ogbe, goodnight.

Onyechere Ibeakanma Commits Suicide, UBA Banker Left N16m In His Account

A 46-year-old male banker attached to one of the United Bank For Africa (UBA) branches in Lagos state, Nigeria, has committed suicide for a reason yet to be known, Igbere TV reports.

Mr. Ibeakanma, a father of one, was found lying lifeless in his room in Victoria Island, Lagos State.

According to reports gathered by Igbere TV, the deceased identified as Onyechere Ibeakanma from Umuakam Afugiri in Umuahia north LGA, Abia state died after drinking a substance believed to be sniper.

Until his death on Friday 9th of August 2019, Mr. Ibeakanma was a Human relationship Manager at the UBA.

According to what a family source told Igbere TV, Ibeakanma left a suicide note for his wife who went shopping when he came back from work, intimating her of his intentions to end his life.

The suicide note as obtained by Igbere TV reads;

“The best, that’s what I used to call you. Finally this is the end of my journey here on earth. The evil I have been battling with has succeeded in quenching the flame.

You married a wrong man. You’re a good woman and you deserve the best. You need to be happy. You need to soar. Please take care of our princess Chinenyenwa.

Tell her that I love her so much. Be peaceable with everyone though not gonna be easy. Tell my family not to harbour any resentment against you. You’re a blessing to us.

That’s the wish of a dying man. Don’t cry for me but pray for me. I love you and chinenye so much. Good Bye My beloved”

The source who spoke Igbere TV on anonymity revealed he was shocked as to why the deceased who was discovered to have left as much 16 million naira in one of his accounts took his own life.

The source however told Igbere TV that Mr. Ibeakanma always exhibited some strange behaviours that no member of the family has taken serious notice of except until his death.

“In one of his Facebook post on July 24 at 4:48 PM: Ibeakanma wrote; THE LIGHT IS GRADUALLY DIMMING OUT………… but we never read any meaning to it,” the source said.

“But today, Onyechere is no more what more can we say than to ask God to forgive his sins and grant his soul eternal passage into his bosom,” he added.

Much ado about casualisation in banking industry

To cut cost and maximise profit, banks and other financial institutions are increasingly turning to contract staff as opposed to full employment. But the practice, otherwise known as casualisation, has drawn the ire of labour activists and other stakeholders. Many of them argue that the cost-cutting measure can threaten the stability of the banking system, if not checked, TOBA AGBOOLA reports.
It may have been a corporate survival strategy foisted on banks and other financial institutions by the prevailing economic realities in Nigeria. But, banks’ resort to contract staffing as an option to cut cost and maximise profit in an increasingly challenging and competitive business environment, has not gone down well with labour activists and other critical stakeholders. To them, it’s opposed to full employment,

Indeed, the country has been witnessing a downturn in economic activities, forcing many banks to look at ways of cutting back on their spending as their profits dropped. Consequently, many of them opted to engage casual workers, popularly known as ‘contract staff’.  But in doing so, they have pitched themselves against labour unionists, stakeholders and the contract staff so engaged.

Labour, stakeholders kick
Some stakeholders, who spoke with The Nation, expressed fears that the increasing spate of casualisation in banks may be responsible for the rising cases of frauds in the banking industry. According to them, most frauds in banks may have been perpetrated by contract staff whose meagre salaries are barely enough to keep their eyes away from depositors’ funds.
One of the stakeholders, who preferred to be anonymous, recalled, for instance, that a contract staff in one of the new generation banks in Lagos recently attempted to steal a box ful of dollar notes after the bank had closed for the day. He said it was in a bid to avert this kind of scenario that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) warned commercial banks to desist from giving sensitive banking roles to contract staff, as they do not have a stake in the banks.

A former CBN Director, Banking and Payments System Department, ‘Dipo Fatokun, lent credence to this when he noted that the apex bank has severally encouraged banks to ensure that their staff are those with something at stake. “A temporary staff may not have a stake in the bank so to say. So, it is encouraged that if they have members of staff, who are not regular staff, they should not give them responsibilities or roles that will expose them to critical functions of a bank.
“If you are giving somebody an authority to approve transactions of high magnitude, and he does not have a stake in your bank, then you are already exposing yourself. So, this has been going on and I believe many banks understand the need to rely on their key staff for major duties. That is one of the reasons fraud attempts have been rising, but the value lost is declining.”
For the National President, Association of Senior Staff of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions (ASSBIFI), Comrade Oyinkan Olasanoye, the country Labour Act has not been fair to workers. She said under the Act, organisations can use outsourced staff, but they cannot be used for more than six months before they are converted to full-time employees.

However, Olasanoye lamented that organisations are not keeping to the rules, as outsourced staff remain in the same position for years, and sometimes, sacked without due consultation. She accused the Ministry of Labour and Employment of not enforcing compliance among companies, stating that the Ministry needs to encourage more inspectors to go out and look at the conditions that casual workers are being exposed to.
The ASSBIFI national president, however, said the Association sent a lot of proposals to the National Assembly, drawing its attention to the negative effects of casualisation in the financial sector, but the Association is yet to get a feedback on those proposals
Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) General-Secretary, Mr Lumumba Okugbawa, is no less worried by banks’ preference for contract staffing. Describing casualisation as “a cankerworm that has eaten deep into the fabrics of our industry in particular”, he said most companies’ management keyed into this option to short-change the average worker in order to maximise profit.

The PENGASSAN scribe also accused banks and other orgnaisations engaged in contract staffing, of denying employees their right to be organised. “We agree that there are short-term jobs like three to  six months, but keeping a worker for up to 15 years as a casual worker is nothing short of slavery and should be condemned in its entirety.

“We, therefore, call for a strengthening of our relevant laws to discourage this menace. In some climes, due to the short period and fixed term of their contract, these categories of workers even earn more than the so-called permanent or regular workers. The struggle is still on to discourage this practice. Casual or contract workers have no legal protection,” he told The Nation.

Also speaking on evils of casualisation, Mr. Femi Aborishade, an Ibadan-based legal practitioner and activist, said: “Casual employment refers to contracts of employment which are for a short duration. It is characterised by uncertainty, temporariness, flexibility, fluctuations in workload, and so on. Casualisation, as the phenomenon is often referred to, can take several forms and called by different nomenclatures, depending on the country and work enterprise.

“It could be called casual labour, temporary staff, contract staff, outsourced labour (i.e. labour supplied by sub-contractors), on-call workers (called in to work only as and when they are needed), zero hours contracts (workers, who are not entitled to any minimum number of hours of work), undocumented labour, seasonal labour, and so on.”
Aborishade emphasised that casual workers tend to be underpaid and are not entitled to any rights – no fringe benefits, transport, feeding, medical care allowances, no freedom of unionisation, no pension, no leave, and so on. He said in most cases, they are only paid for days worked regardless of sickness–induced absence from work.

The activist said the policy is in practice, not only in the private sector, but also in the public sector. He added that unfortunately, there is no legal protection for the typical casual worker in Nigeria. “The Labour Act ought to be overhauled such that, in principle, labour casualisation is abolished or at least, properly regulated within the relevant standards established in International Labour Organisation (ILO) Conventions and Recommendations so that the casual worker is entitled to basic trade union rights,” he urged.
Aborishade, therefore, called on the labour movement to put pressure on the Federal Government to ratify relevant ILO conventions. His words: “In the least, I recommend for Nigeria, the adoption of the Zimbabwean legal protection for the casual worker. In Zimbabwe, Section 12 (3) of the Labour Act provides protection for job security of casual workers.

“Under this Section, casual workers are entitled to not being unfairly dismissed. Their dismissal can only be valid if substantive and procedural fairness are shown. Indeed, Section 12 (3) of the Labour Act provides that a casual contract (casual worker) shall be deemed to have been converted to a permanent contract (employee) where the employee works for an aggregate period of more than six weeks in any four consecutive months.”
Aborishade said although, he commends the Zimbabwean legal provision on conversion from casual to permanent worker status, and recommends it for adoption in Nigeria, he generally believes that the upsurge in precarious employment is the fallout of globalisation, but its practice in Nigeria is nothing but industrial slavery.

Contract staff lament
Mr. Segun Olaoye said contract staff in banks are really poorly treated. “I even have a friend who works for a new generation bank who told me that he is really finding it tough as a contract staff, but has no choice due to lack of jobs in Nigeria. He complains of the very little salary he collects, which is about N70, 000 and works from morning till around 9pm,” he narrated.

Busola Olaoke, who has also been working in a bank as a contract employee for the past four years, told The Nation that she is now getting apprehensive about what the future holds for her. She said she does not know if her contract with the bank will be renewed or not, and even if the contract is renewed, her salary will not be better than what it is in any case.

However, Olaoke is not alone in her predicament. Seun Alabi, another contract staff, said she  has struggled endlessly to ensure that her employer converts her employment to a permanent one. She, however, expressed regrets that her aspiration seems to be a mirage. To make matters worse, she said the bank often threatens its entire contract staff with termination of appointment at any given opportunity.
While Alabi and her colleagues are quite eager to secure good jobs with better conditions elsewhere, the snag, however, is that such jobs may not be within their reach, a situation that has compelled them to make do with their current occupation where the working conditions are unpalatable.
The Nation learnt that the sad stories of Olaoke and Alabi mirror the situation in most organisations, particularly banks where contract staff engagement has become the order of the day. Although, the practice abounds virtually in all the sectors, including manufacturing, oil and gas, the banking industry appears to be more pronounced.
The reason for this is not far-fetched. Since mid-June 2014 when the country’s economy was hit by a debilitating recession caused by the crash in oil price, down to the end of 2017 when the economy started recovering, the fortunes of banks have dipped.
The economic recession was said to have hit most banks on several fronts, ranging from a record high bad loan (non-performing loans) to a decline in income. In view of the dwindling revenue and the impact of bad loans, most of the banks resorted to cost-cutting measures, including outright staff retrenchment and contract staffing.
The Nation learnt that the engagement of contract staff is common mainly among the top tier banks, some of who may have just two full staff in a branch. Some of the contract staff who spoke with The Nation, lamented the outrageous targets given to them to sustain their contract.

Can govt rein in the monster?
President Muhammadu Buhari had, at the last Centenary International Labour Conference (ILC) in Geneva, told a gathering of world leaders, employers and workers representatives that casualisation of workers in any form was no longer in practice in Nigeria.
This was even as he said labour should be the centre piece of economic and social policies for building a just, fair, equitable and egalitarian society in the future.
Towards realising this, Buhari said the Nigerian government has inaugurated and launched the 2017-2020 Federal Civil Service Strategy and Implementation Plan for the purpose of improving and developing capacity in the public sector to advance the nation’s economy.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Labour and Employment, Mr. Williams Alao, who spoke on behalf of President Buhari and Nigeria, as head of the Nigerian delegation to this year’s ILO Centenary session, said Nigeria as a country has already barred casualisation.
He said the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment had issued several circulars banning casualisation in Nigeria, adding that casualisation was not acceptable in the country.

He said the Federal Government will no longer tolerate casualisation in the nation’s world of work. “I am pleased to inform this august gathering that Nigeria is one of the countries that has convened a National Dialogue on the Future of Work and is implementing many of the initiatives as well as the recommendations of our National Dialogue.

“We agree with the ILO that labour, being the most critical factor of production, should be the fulcrum of economic and social policies if we are to have a just, fair, equitable and egalitarian society in the future.”

He pointed out that, there is presently a concerted effort to create an efficient, productive, incorruptible and citizen-centred work force, anchored on four pillars of professionalism, enterprise, content management system, entrepreneurship culture and enhanced welfare package for employees.
While these are no doubt cheery news for Nigerians caught in the web of casualisation across the sectors, the Federal Government’s claims that it has outlawed the practice is clearly at variance with the reality on ground. This is so particularly in the banking industry where the practice has continued to thrive.

However, going by the tough stance of the labour movement and other concerned stakeholders against the practice, it’s probably safe to say that the issue will continue to pitch orgnaised labour against employers on one hand, and the government on the other hand, until it is addressed.

186 doctors from Pakistan, India, Iran, Afghanistan, Syria, Lebanon and Iraq write President Buhari on the need to transfer El-Zakzaky to a well-equipped hospital

One hundred and eighty six doctors from Pakistan, India, Iran, Afghanistan, Syria, Lebanon and Iraq have written a letter to President Buhari pointing to Sheikh El-Zakzaky’s physical conditions and asking the Nigerian government to transfer him to a well-equipped hospital as soon as possible.

The letter was published by Fars News, an Iranian news agency. The report did not indicate what date the letter was written by the doctors or whether it was written after a Kaduna High Court last week approved a leave for El-Zakzaky and his wife Zeenat, to seek medicare in India.

Fars News quoted one of the signatories to the letter, Dr. Pourrahim Najafabadi, as saying that Zakzaky needs to be cured by an experienced medical team of physicians in a specialized multi-specialty hospital outside Nigeria.

“With the current physical condition of the Sheikh, especially the virulent lead poisoning, Sheikh’s life is seriously at risk by delayed treatment. Meanwhile, there is a need for special medical care even in case of complete medical treatment. There is serious risk to Sheikh’s life if he is kept under detention,” said Najafabadi, the founder and spokesperson of a group of expert physicians who have volunteered to treat Sheikh Zakzaky.

Below is the full text of the letter:

Quote:“In the name of God, The healer
From the community of Doctors
To the President of the Republic of Nigeria, Mr. Buhari.
In the past several months, the world has constantly received troubling news regarding the health of one of the prominent figures in Nigeria, Shaikh Ibrahim Zakzaky. Both Skaikh Ibrahim Zakzaky and his wife are kept in prison and the health status of both of them is very alarming.
We have chosen to be doctors even after knowing that this job is very difficult and troublesome, but we chose to save people’s lives and preferred the health of the society over our personal interests.
According to the medical reports regarding the health status of Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky:
1. He is suffering from a total blindness in the left eye, and is also suffering from vision problems in the right eye including glaucoma and progressive macular atrophy. According to the diagnosis of the visiting physicians, Shaikh Zakzaky will lose his vision sooner or later if the current circumstances do not change.
2. He has shown symptoms of Ischemic heart disease which can lead to Myocardial Infraction.
3. He is also suffering from severe cervical spondylosis which has resulted to nerve root compression and symptoms are progressive causing insomnia.
4. The experiments show that he has heavy metal toxicity including Lead and Cadmium. Laboratory tests that are performed on May 31st, 2019 show that blood lead level is 171.94µg/dl. Later on June 18th, 2019 this level was reported to be 231.48µg while in the last laboratory test the blood lead level was three times more than the toxicity level (grade 5 of poisoning).
Based on the points highlighted above, Shaikh Ibrahim Zakzaky should be transferred to a well- equipped medical center that has Neuro-ophthalmologist, glaucoma specialist and low vision expert, cardiologist, orthopedist and neurologist. Also he may need to have a surgery to reduce intraocular pressure.

We, doctors of different nationalities cannot take the health of any human for granted. This is something that is inherent in our obligation as doctors. Ignoring the critical health status of Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky can end up in irreparable consequences.
We request the government and parliament of Nigeria to immediately transfer him to a well-equipped hospital to prevent any unfortunate incidents.
A group of doctors from Pakistan, India, Iran, Afghanistan, Syria, Lebanon and Iraq

Lekki semi-nude ladies: Matilda Duncan reacts to Federal Government's threat of making Tekno a scapegoat

Matilda Duncan has reacted to Federal Government's threat of making Tekno a scapegoat to send strong signals of intolerance to 'nonsense and immorality', following the viral video in which he was spotted dancing with semi-naked ladies in Lekki area of Lagos.

LIB reported earlier that the Director General of the National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC) a parastatal of the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture, Segun Runsewe expressed disappointment that the Cartel Music boss released the music video which sparked controversy while being shot. He further said they are going to inform security agencies to place him on their watch list, because his action is a threat to national security and a bad influence on Nigerian youths.

However Matilda Duncan fired back at the Federal Government over claims of Tekno's action being a threat to national security. The media personality who pointed out that the ladies wore bikinis and were not nude as insinuated, further questioned the priorities of the country.

She wrote;

Quote:National Threat ??? #scapegoat ??? this harmless Face? @teknoofficial ... All because???? A video ?? Please what is Nudity?? Where the ladies not in bikinis?? (Not that I say what he did was right o) b4 you all come at me!!! But, What are the priorities of this Country... like: where is Hamisu Wadume ??? Is Leah dead... ?? #why detain a Man for 45 days without evidence??? Ex-INEC boss was bribed ?? [Image: BBNaija-2019-Ike.jpg]

Big Brother Naija housemate, Ike has revealed why he does not speak to his parents.
Ike while proffessing love for Mercy on Saturday night said his parents do not show him love like she does.

According to him, he is not in talking terms with them because his father tried to disown him more than six times.
But, Mercy, while reassuring him of her love maintained that although she loves him, he needs to know that his parents love him more than she does and he has to open up his mind to love them in return.
She added, “They sent you to school because they love you and want you to be a better person.”

Meanwhile, the love birds on Sunday cleared the air about having sex on Saturday night.
A viral video had emerged on Sunday morning showing both housemates under duvet making body movements.
Some BBNaija fans suggested they were having sex while others described it as just romance.

However, the romantic couple cleared the air on Sunday afternoon while they had a discussion in the garden.
Ike said he almost had sex with Mercy but her pyjamas and facial expression prevented him.

President Condé Of Guinea Lobbies Buhari For Tinubu In Daura Ahead Of 2023
User Avatar Forum: News

Temidayo Akinsuyi, Lagos

President Alpha Condé of Guinea visited President Muhammadu Buhari in Daura, Katsina State, at the weekend to lobby for his friend, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, national leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), to clinch the presidential candidacy of the party in 2023, Daily Independent has gathered.

Though Condé’s visit coincided with the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations which he marked with President Buhari in Daura, credible sources said his main mission in Nigeria was to intervene on behalf of his friend, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu on the 2023 presidency.

Though Tinubu has been silent on whether he will contest the 2023 presidential election, many of his loyalists in the APC have said he will take a shot at occupying the highest office in the land when the presidency is zoned to the South in 2023.

According to a credible source, Condé may have been worried based on the statements by some power brokers that the North may still retain the power in 2023 after uninterrupted eight years.

He added that another source of concern for the Guinean president was the new ministers unveiled by President Buhari, which many believed did not favour Tinubu.

“Yes, the Guinean president is Daura to celebrate the Eid-el-Kabir festive occasion with President Buhari but it is a strategic visit as he wants to use the occasion to lobby for his friend, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

“He decided to meet President Buhari in Daura when the president is on break because it will afford them to have a heart-to-heart talk compared to the tight schedule at the Villa.

“We all know the role Tinubu played in his reelection, so I think Condé believes that one good turn deserves another and this explains why he has come all the way from Guinea to intervene on Tinubu’s behalf”, the source said.

Tinubu and Condé are close allies. Tinubu also played a significant role in the presidential election held in Guinea in 2015 during which Condé was reelected for a second term.

Tinubu’s role in Condé’s reelection was highlighted by Sunday Dare, a former Chief of Staff to the former Lagos State governor who is one of the ministers-designate expected to be sworn-in by President Buhari on August 21.

In an article titled ‘In Faraway Guinea Conakry, Tinubu’s Political Prowess Holds Sway’, Dare wrote on how Tinubu deployed the prowess he used during the 2015 presidential election in Nigeria which ousted the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and President Goodluck Jonathan to secure a fresh five-year term for Condé in Guinea.

“Though the October 11, 2015 presidential election in Guinea Conakry has come and gone, not many would forget in a long time the key role played by Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“And just like he did in the Nigerian situation serving as the catalyst, the fulcrum alongside others and perhaps the ‘babalawo’ that brought the opposition to power and chased away the PDP after 16 years in power, Asiwaju Tinubu has helped retain a trusted friend and pan-Africanist in power. Prof. Alpha Condé, the first democratically elected president of Guinea is back for a record second term of five years after a commanding first round victory of 58 percent of total votes cast.

“The victory that came when the final results were announced was reward for handwork and a campaign that was on message. The political campaign of the incumbent president got a bite when Tinubu moved in to help his friend, a brother and a true African leader.”

RHAPSODY OF REALITIES

MONDAY, 12TH AUGUST

PERPETUALLY HIGH ON THE HOLY GHOST

And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but ever be filled {and} stimulated with the [Holy] Spirit (Ephesians 5:18 AMPC).

Our opening verse talks about being perpetually high on the Holy Ghost, functioning under His sway and influence, twenty-four hours every day. That’s the Spirit’s desire for each and every one of us, and He shows us how to make it happen in the ensuing verses 19-21.

Verse 19 says, “Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.” This is one of the ways to maintain a spiritual high. You sing spiritual poems to God in worship; you offer songs of thanksgiving and praise to Him; very often, these are prophetic songs that come to you from the realm of the spirit; and sometimes, they may come to you in spiritual tongues.

It also says to “Make melody in your heart to the Lord.” These are tunes of praise, worship, edification, gratitude, and joy, from your heart to the Lord, rendered in your understanding or in other tongues. Make it a conscious thing to get yourself filled with the Spirit every day. Your spirit will continually be energized for victory and success. You don’t have to wait till you get to church to be filled with the Spirit; you can be filled with the Spirit ANYTIME, ANYWHERE; it’s up to you.

Start from the known, to the unknown. In other words, start with the already written Psalms and read them out loud, such as Psalm 23, Psalm 27, etc. By the time you’re through reading, you’re super charged and inspired, and you can make your own psalms as God’s Spirit gives you utterance. Make this a constant in your life. Hallelujah!

CONFESSION

Dear heavenly Father, I thank you for the privilege of fellowship with you in prayer by the Holy Spirit. Your Spirit fills me through and through, and I’m built up as a spiritual edifice, over and above the corrupting influences of this world. Blessed be God!

#TALKINGSESSION

12TH AUGUST.

KINDLY SAY THESE WORDS OUT LOUD

Gracious Father, thank You for the privilege of being seated with You in the realms of power and glory, far above all principality, power, might and every domain of darkness! I reign with You today over the circumstances of life and over every negative force of nature, declaring that Your perfect and eternal will is fulfilled in my life – in my job, family, finances and in the lives of those around me.

I declare that I am living in divine health, absolute prosperity, unending success, abundant joy, and indescribable peace today. As I look into my day with my eyes of faith, I see myself walking in Your glory and experiencing unprecedented progress and success, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

God bless you

Nobody knows why Obaseki and Oshiomhole are fighting — Oyegun

The former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, has revealed that no one knows why Governor Godwin Obaseki and Adams Oshiomhole fell out.

The first executive governor of Edo State made the disclosure while speaking to newsmen at his birthday party in Benin, Edo state capital. Oyegun stated that the feud which was taken to public space makes him ashamed as Edo has been in the news for the wrong reason.

Quote:“All of us are dancing round the crisis, but we do not know what started the conflict between two friends.
“But for me, I listen to the people who said he is performing. Please, let him continue if the people feel he is doing well.
“Quite frankly, what is going on is ridiculous. We are beyond this kind. I am ashamed. Our people have contributed so much to the stability of the State.
“It is unfortunate that Edo State has been in the news for the very wrong reasons, apart from abusing ourselves, you (media) owe the nation a great commitment towards making sure that the truth prevail,” he said.

Traditional rulers know kidnappers — Bishop Okonkwo

Bishop Mike Okonkwo, the presiding Bishop of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM), in his reaction to the spate of kidnappings witnessed in the country alleged that traditional rulers know kidnappers.

He also accused state Governors of doing little or nothing to address the security challenges the country has been enmeshed in.

Bishop Okonkwo made the claims at the 7th edition of the Leading Edge Conference and Business Summit organised by TREM (Vision House) in Utako area of Abuja, and he also warned against “ethnic, personal, religious and political profiling” which according to him will not help in anyway to solve the issue. The Cleric also called for a reduction in the salaries of lawmakers.

Quote:Okonkwo said, “The people perpetrating kidnapping and other forms of violence did not drop from the sky; they came from somewhere. They are living in the same community where they do these things.
“I have spoken with some traditional rulers that these things that are happening. As far as I am concerned, if somebody comes to my town or a state where I am operating and begins to kill people indiscriminately, then I will suspend the traditional ruler.
“How can that happen? I am in charge of a place and the traditional ruler of a town and such incidents like kidnapping happen in my town. You mean I cannot do something to find out where they are coming from? Where are they and where are they hibernating?
“They shoot people in the highway and run back into the bush in a state where somebody is a governor. We have had cases where some culprits were arrested. Governors and traditional rulers should own these problems and not be crying. Every day, they are crying; I am tired of their crying, they should do something as leaders.
Okonkwo added, “The President is not in a place like Enugu; why should I be the governor of a state and be looking at the Presidency to come and handle my state for me when I have security votes?
“The menace of kidnapping is staring every Nigerian in the face. I have always said something concerning this country. When problems of Nigeria are handled from religious, tribal, political or personal sentiments, we miss the whole point.”

Lekki semi-nude ladies: We will make Tekno a scapegoat - FG

The Federal Government has threatened to use Tekno as a scapegoat to send strong signals of intolerance to 'nonsense and immorality', as it expressed disappointment that the Cartel Music boss released the music video which sparked controversy while being shot.

Recall that Tekno suffered a backlash after being spotted in a viral video shared on social media dancing in a transparent moving van on the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge in Lagos, with four semi-nude women.

Reacting to the release of the music video, Director General of the National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC) a parastatal of the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture, Segun Runsewe said they were queried by Nigerians at home and in diaspora after a clip of the semi-naked women went viral. He also warned against shameful conducts which is not part of "our" culture.

Quote:“We commend the police for arresting Tekno for the shameful misconduct. The same person, who was granted bail on health grounds has gone ahead to release the controversial video. We are now warning him to desist from this shameful conduct, which is not part of our culture.
“No single person is bigger than Nigeria; whether he likes it or not, we are going to use him as a scapegoat to send strong signals that this government does not tolerate nonsense and immorality, but discipline, which is our moral principle.
“Since the offensive Tekno scam video came to the limelight, I have received hundreds of telephone calls and SMS from Nigerians at home and others in the United Kingdom, United States, Canada and other parts of the world querying why such anomalies would be tolerated in Nigeria.
“Now that he has released the shameful video when investigation is still ongoing, we are going to inform security agencies to place him on their watch list, because his action is a threat to national security and a bad influence on Nigerian youths.
“We are committed to exposing proponents of this kind of offensive sights and videos. We warn that nudity is not part of our culture and should not be tolerated. The Federal Government will henceforth fish out clubs for nude dancers across the country for their promoters to face prosecution.”

The National Chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, has asked Nigerian Muslims to use the solemn period of Sallah to present Nigeria’s precarious situation to Allah for his prompt intervention. Prince Secondus, in a Sallah message yesterday by his Special Adviser on Media, Ike Abonyi, said poor leadership was threatening the existence and survival of the nation.

The PDP leader said, “Only justice and fairness, the type only God gives can rescue Nigeria from imminent collapse.” Secondus added that, “The blood of thousands of innocent souls being wasted daily in our land should be enough mitigation to plead to God to save this country from destruction.

“Nigerians should also use the period to offer fervent prayers for the unity and stability of the nation which is seriously under threat due to poor leadership.” He explained that intense prayer for the country had become necessary more than ever before, adding that the nation was in dire need of divine intervention to survive.

“We know as a fact that this is not what Nigerians desire from democracy, especially given what happened on February 23, 2019. But a period like this solemn time provides the people an opportunity to ask Allah to allow the will of the people to prevail. “It is a statement of fact that this is one of the worst times in our history as a country where lives are valueless and freedom denied to persons holding opposite views in a national discourse by an obviously intolerant political leadership.

“I charge you not to allow the challenges of now make you lose your dignity and modesty as a people and miss the essence and meaning of the Eid-el-Kabir festivity and the divine succour it brings, in assuring us that there is always a light at the end of every tunnel.”

Xenophobia: Protest against alleged killing of Nigerians by South Africans is reckless and unwarranted - South Africa's Foreign Minister

South Africa’s Minister for International Relations and Cooperation, Dr Naledi Pandor at a press conference in response to a planned protest by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), alleged that claims of targeted killings of Nigerians in their country were false.

Speaking at the press conference which the Minister of Police Bheki Cele attended on Sunday August 11, Dr Naledi Pandor stated that the planned NANS protest over the recent killing of Nigerians in South Africa was reckless and unwarranted.

Recall that LIB reported that NANS ordered South Africans and their companies operating in Nigeria to shut down within seven days and move out of the country, following the increased number of xenophobic attacks against Nigerians in South Africa.

The South African Foreign Minister said the protest does not reflect the strong ties between both countries and further insisted that everything is being done to protect and improve the relationship.

Quote:“The protests are said to be in response to alleged killing of Nigerians by South Africans, as you are aware, these allegations are devoid of truth, they are reckless and unwarranted.
“We find these statements most unfortunate and they don’t reflect the strong relations that exist between the people and the government of South Africa and Nigeria.
“Firstly, there is no targeting of any group of Africans in South Africa, secondly, our law enforcement agencies are making every effort to fight crime and arrest criminals" she said.

This is coming after the Chairman of National Diaspora Commission, Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa confirmed that eight police officers were arrested over xenophobic attacks against Nigerians in South Africa.

About seven men who were armed with machetes entered the female block of the Abdusalami Abubakar Postgraduate hall through a window passage and raided the first and second floor.

An eyewitness who narrated his experience, said, “They came in around 2 am.

“They were about seven. They were paired in twos, moving from a room to another, collecting people’s phones and laptops.

“They knew about this hostel, and they were so comfortable. They had time to operate.

“They tied up our security man. One of the two males who were alarmed and decided to come from their block to see the situation was machete on the head and the other received a machete cut on his hand.”

One of the female victims, a visually impaired postgraduate student told our correspondent that she was threatened by the armed men.

he said, “They burst into my room and they asked me for my phone, my money and my purse.

“They put a machete to my neck, that was the first time I would ever experience being threatened with a cutlass.

“Thank God they didn’t see my phone, they left my room after they discovered there was nothing to take.

28 people dead, 20 missing after super typhoon made landfall in China

A total of 28 people died and 20 remain missing after super typhoon Lekima made landfall in east China’s Zhejiang Province on Saturday, local authorities said on Sunday morning.

According to Xinhua, most of the deaths occurred in Yongjia County, administered by Wenzhou City, where torrential downpours caused a landslide that blocked rivers. The barrier lake bursted and flooded people away. Nearly 1.08 million people have been evacuated to safe places, and close to 5 million people in Zhejiang were affected, said the provincial flood control headquarters.

Lekima, the ninth typhoon of this year, landed around 1:45 a.m. Saturday in Zhejiang, bringing heavy rainstorms and triggering flash floods. In Zhejiang, the typhoon damaged more than 173,000 hectares of crops and 34,000 houses. Direct economic loss amounts to 14.57 billion yuan (about 2.1 billion U.S. dollars), the headquarters said.

Rescue operation is underway. Lekima is moving northwards and will churn up the east coast of Shandong Province on Sunday. It is expected to make a second landing along the coastline in Shandong late Sunday, bringing strong wind and heavy downpours, the National Meteorological Center warned on Sunday.

Shandong air traffic management bureau said the typhoon will greatly affect traffic in airports of the area. A total of 47 flights have been adjusted.

Robbers invade police barracks in Delta

Police officers and their families residing in the ‘B’ Police Barracks along the Benin-Onitsha expressway in Asaba, Delta State have raised the alarm of incessant robbery attacks on them in recent times.

The residents of the barracks who spoke to The Sun on condition of anonymity, said the robbery suspects have taken advantage of the prevailing dakrness in the barracks to unleash series of attacks on them. The barracks was thrown into darkness two months ago after yet-to-be-identified persons vandalized the transformer serving the barracks and who also made away with the cables.

Quote:''Robbers have been coming here to dispossess us of our property. We have lost power generating sets, handsets laptops and personal effects to the dreaded thieves. There is uncleared vegetation at the other side of the barrack, through which they gain access to the barrack. They have been tormenting us lately. They come through the bush, and because there is no power supply, everywhere is always dark, so we cannot see them coming in.” a resident said

Another resident who also spoke on condition of anonimity, said they have contributed N3,000 each to fix the vandalized transformer, adding that since the donation was made over a month ago, nothing has changed.

Quote:“Our lives are under serious threat as a result of darkness which the hoodlums are taking advantage of. We are very worried at the moment. We have not heard anything since we contributed money to fix the vandalized transformer,” the source disclosed.

Another resident of the barrack however believes that the robbery attacks might be an orchestration of the children of some of the police officers.

Quote:“The situation is terrible but there are some children who are above 18 years that are still around. This is not proper. I suspect that the pockets of robberies we are experiencing are orchestrated by these young residents. So we are appealing to the management of the state police command to investigate this matter and save us from the hands of these tormentors,” the resident said

When contacted, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Adeyinka Adeleke,  admitted that the barrack has been in darkness due to the vandalized transformer, but denied claims that robbery attacks has been on the increase in the barracks.

Ministers: Former Police boss sends message to Buhari

Alhaji Abubakar Tsav, a retired top police officer, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to attach spies to all public officers to mitigate corruption in Nigeria.
Tsav told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Makurdi that the Federal Government should urgently stop security personnel from working with public officers beyond two years.

He said the first way to fight corruption was to ensure regular redeployment of officers attached to public officers and attachment of spies to checkmate their activities.
Tsav, a former commissioner of police in Lagos, said lengthy attachment of security personnel with public officers was greatly encouraging corruption and criminality in the country following their familiarity with them.
“Government should attach spies to all public officers. I remember many years back when we were still in the service when you are attached to any public officer to work with, you go there not only as a security personnel but also as a spy.

“When you see anything that is wrong you report to headquarters. But this time, I don’t know, but it looks like some of them are accomplices.
“Some of them join the conspiracy to commit crimes. This will reduce corruption and criminality in our country,” Tsav said.
The former Federal Public Complaint Commissioner also said organisers of “Revolution Now” had committed treasonable offense, adding that they did not even have enough grounds to call for a revolution in the first place.

He said Nigerians needed to be very cautious of self acclaimed activists and liberation fighters to avoid leading the country into chaos.
“First of all, a revolution is an attempt to take over a government of the day by force and it is completely different from demonstration.
“When you embark on a revolution you want to change that government and that will entail loss of lives and property.
“I think there was not enough grounds for them to call for a revolution. Many other incidents have happened in this country in the past that would have easily invited a revolution but nobody raised a voice; corruption for example in the oil and gas sector.
“They are only using this revolution to destabilise and cause chaos in this country. As far as I am concerned and the established laws of this land, a revolution is a treasonable offence,” he said.
Tsav further said that with the posture of Buhari’s government and his desire to induct and update all ministers with his policies, the ministers would surely add value to the government.
He also said that despite public outcry against some of the ministerial nominees over allegations of corruption. none was convicted so they remained innocent.
“Those who are lucky to be selected to be ministers by Buhari should please have a change of heart and try to serve this country and not themselves or their pockets. If they have long pockets they should cut them short so that they will have nowhere to keep stolen money.
“There are some allegations I personally made against some of these people but they are in there now so what can I say? With the posture of Buhari, I think they would have something to offer Nigeria.
“Sometimes when you have a criminal case against someone, you use accomplices to establish your case. Maybe they are using this people as accomplices in the fight against corruption,” he added.

President Muhammadu Buhari has joined members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in congratulating Chief John Odigie Oyegun on his 80th birthday.
He described him as true example of a patriot and democrat.

In a statement by his spokesman, Femi Adesina, Buhari congratulateed Oyegun on the milestone, which he noted, has been highlighted with memories of great achievements “like turning a Permanent Secretary at the age of 30, winning a gubernatorial election in early 50s, and providing visionary leadership to unseat an incumbent government for the first time in Nigeria’s history.”
The President affirmed that the former chairman of All Nigeria’s Peoples Party (ANPP) and APC set a standard for consistency, honesty and integrity in Nigeria’s politics as he championed building of strong democratic institutions, and promoted the virtue of looking beyond elections and positions to growing and unifying the nation for posterity.
“As an active participant in Nigeria’s political development and governance for many years, President Buhari believes Chief Oyegun’s depth of wisdom, maturity, tolerance and penchant for always putting the interest of the nation above self should serve as a lesson to both old and younger political actors, that the greatest investment for building a nation is personal sacrifice.

“The President rejoices with family members, friends and associates of the former governor of Edo State as he turns an octogenarian, praying that God will give him good health and strength to keep serving the nation and humanity”, the statement added.

Sowore: Lawyer drags Buhari govt, DSS, IGP, others to Court over attack on protesters

Human rights lawyer, Olukoya Ogungbeje has dragged the federal government before the Federal High Court over the clampdown on ‘Revolution Now’ protesters, who claimed to be demanding better governance in Nigeria.
In a suit filed before Justice Chuka Obiozor of the Ikoyi Division of the Court, Ogungbeje is praying the court “to order the police to release everyone in its detention”.

He argued that protest is a guaranteed right of every Nigeria according to the constitution of the country.
The lawyer joined the Department of State Services (DSS), Inspector-General of Police, and Attorney-General of the Federation in the ex parte suit on the violation of fundamental human rights.
The lawyer told the court he was part of the protest but was barred along with other people in Lagos from carrying out their constitutional right.

He stated that the attacks on him and other protesters were a gross violation of their fundamental human right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression.
Ogungbeje said, “The right to peaceful protest is a constitutionally guaranteed fundamental right guaranteed under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“By engaging in peaceful protest, the applicant and other persons have not committed any offence known to law to warrant the treatment meted out to them by the respondents and their agents.

“The acts and actions of the respondents have infringed on the provisions of the Constitution and the rights of the protesters.”
The case will come up on August 14.
DAILY POST recalls that the ‘RevolutionNow’ protesters had embarked on a nationwide protest but were dispersed by police and other security agencies with over 50 protesters arrested and detained across the country.
Omoyele Sowore, the convener of the protest and 2019 presidential candidate, was arrested two days before the protest began.
Justice Taiwo Taiwo of a federal high court sitting in Abuja had granted a request of the DSS to detain Sowore for 45 more days.

Violent extremism is the greatest challenge facing Islam – Buhari

President Buhari in his Eid-el-Kabir message to Muslims, stated that the greatest challenge facing Islam is violent extremism.

Admonishing Muslims to keep off from teachings that promote violence against innocent people, President Buhari maintained that Islam is a religion of peace that has been given a bad name through extremist ideas.

The President in a statement signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity Mallam Garba Shehu, said "the greatest commitment to Islam is for Muslims to put its good virtues into practice, and by making justice and righteousness the guiding principle of their everyday life.

President Buhari explained that “we should be the mirror through which others see the good virtues of our faith.’’ According to him, “Islam is a religion of peace and we should avoid violent extremist ideas that give Islam a wrong name because our conduct leave more lasting positive impressions than what we say by word of mouth.’’

The President regretted that “violent extremism is the greatest challenge facing Islam today and the only way we can neutralise its evil influence is to distance ourselves from the activities and teachings of those who preach indiscriminate violence against innocent people. And this flies in the face of the teachings of Islam.’’

He advised parents to “protect their children from the deadly exposure to violent extremists who manipulate and exploit those children for their own evil agenda.’’ President Buhari noted that “Boko Haram became a deadly force and a major security scourge because Muslim societies were indifferent from the beginning to the activities of extremist preachers who manipulate innocent and gullible followers.’’

He said that “extremism is like a cancer, which must be detected and destroyed from its early stages of growth.’’ The President, however, assured Nigerians that the Boko Haram terrorism, kidnappings and other forms of banditry “would be dealt with uncompromisingly until we see the back of these evils plaguing our country.’’

“Despite occasional setbacks’’, the President explained that “the Boko Haram militants have been so militarily weakened and scattered by our Armed Forces that they are no longer in a position to occupy any part of Nigeria, let alone hoist their flag and impose their reign of terror longer than 24 hours.’’

“As our armed forces get more equipped and trained, in addition to being more motivated and reinvigorated, this administration is relentlessly committed to protecting Nigerians no matter what it takes to bring a permanent end to this evil,’’ the President further assured Nigerians. He advised Muslims to be tolerant and continue to work for peace, unity, national integration, and peaceful coexistence.

Students Shut Down Shoprite In Ogun Over Xenophobia In South Africa
User Avatar Forum: News
Posted by: Gimbiya - 08-11-2019, 11:50 AM - No Replies

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), on Saturday, shut down South Africa’s grocery chain, Shoprite, at Ota in Ogun State.

The students picketed the shopping mall to protest what they described as unrestrained xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa.

Scores of young Nigerians residing in South Africa have been brought home in body bags in recent years, having been killed in apparent xenophobic attacks in the former apartheid nation.

The Shoprite mall was shut down around 11:10 a.m. in the presence of policemen with shoppers hurriedly ordered out of the mall.

The students carried placards with inscriptions: “South Africans must go. Enough of the killing of our brothers, sisters and relatives in South Africa. You can’t continue to kill our people and still feed fat on us’’.

Speaking with reporters, the National Public Relations Officer of NANS, Mr Azeez Adeyemi, said that “NANS’ leadership under its President, Mr Danielson Bamidele, has resolved to champion the struggle of putting sense back into lawless South Africans.

“It seems the government of South Africa derives pleasure from the senseless killings and sees the continuous xenophobic attacks on Nigerians residents in South Africa as a norm.

“NANS’ struggle against xenophobia has moved beyond ordinary street protests.

“Our target now is to mobilise Nigerian students and Nigerians towards truncating the smooth running of South African businesses in Nigeria.

“We shall resume here at Shoprite, Stanbic IBTC, MTN and Multichoice on August 14 for a total shut down. This is a struggle that will continue until the victory of purpose is achieved,” Adeyemi said.

On August 5, students shut down MTN and Stanbic IBTC Bank offices in Abeokuta to voice their anger over the relentless killing of Nigerians in South African cities.

Up to 800,000 Nigerians, mainly young people reside in South Africa, according to unofficial estimates.

No fewer than 128 Nigerians have been killed in the country since 2016, many of them murdered by South African policemen.

However, some of the Nigerians were reportedly killed by fellow Nigerians in gang violence linked to hard drug peddling.

Daily Devotional for Sunday 11th August

RHAPSODY OF REALITIES

SUNDAY, 11TH AUGUST.

WHEN YOU KNOW HIS WILL

Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is (Ephesians 5:17).

The Word of God is the will of God. The more you study the Scriptures, the more you know the will of God, because you’ll be more acquainted with the author of the Scriptures. If you know His will through the Scriptures, you’ll know His will in everything, including the minutest details of your life.

Sometimes, when people face daunting or challenging situations and cave in under the pressure, it’s because they don’t know the will of the Father. Peradventure you lost your job or business and began to question, “Oh God, why? How could this happen to me?” Such a response shows you’re not sure where you are, with respect to God’s will. If you’re certain that you’re in the centre of His will, remain unmoved.

In Christ, we’re ordained of God to live as champions and reign as kings in life. The reason this hasn’t been the experience of many is that they haven’t learnt to walk in the knowledge of God’s will. Romans 12:2 tells us about the good, the acceptable, and the perfect will of God. The ultimate is walking in God’s perfect will, and that only results from fellowship with the Lord and His Word.

As you fellowship with Him through prayer, the study of the Word and meditation, you’ll know His perfect will, intent and purpose. Through that intimacy, you’ll become more like Him, united with Him in thought and character. You’ll know what to do in every situation; all your efforts and resources will be constantly channelled in the right direction for the right results. When you know the will of God, you’re filled with divine wisdom; you have insight into the mind of God, into the mysteries of the Kingdom.

Just knowing that you’re in the centre of God’s will gives you a sense of absolute mastery and dominion. You’re unruffled, even when you go through diverse tests, because His Word is your anchor. Irrespective of the crisis or darkness, you’re full of joy, because you know that whatever you’re going through, “came to pass!” Great victories await you at the end of the story. Blessed be God!

PRAYER

Dear heavenly Father, I thank you for the enlightenment that has come to my spirit through your Word. As I meditate on the Scriptures, your will and purpose are unveiled to me; I’m guided by your wisdom in preordained paths, fulfilling my glorious call in Christ, to the glory of your Name. Amen.
