South African residents in Soweto go on a rampage, looting foreign-owned shops

Foreign-owned shops in Soweto were under siege on Wednesday, August 14th as residents went on a looting spree.

Areas that have been affected so far include; Zola, Emdeni, Moletsane, White City, Zondi and Rockville. The assault on foreigners is reminiscent of a wave of xenophobic attacks that were unleashed in Soweto a year ago.

Police spokesman Capt Kay Makhubele confirmed that residents from a number of townships had been looting foreign-owned stores since Wednesday evening. “At the moment it is not clear what started this. We are yet to determine the wide scale of the looting, but we have members on the ground monitoring the situation,” he said.

Residents in White City claimed the looting was the community’s way of showing its anger at the attack on police officers in Johannesburg’s CBD more than two weeks ago.

Last week, law-enforcement personnel reclaimed control of the Johannesburg CBD through the “Okae Molao” operation, which saw seven assault rifles, three pistols and millions of rands worth of counterfeit goods being confiscated in the inner city and hundreds of undocumented foreigners were also arrested.

Quote:According to a resident of Soweto identified as Tshepo Lehohla, “how can people from out of this country attack our police officers? Police in other countries would not tolerate that. People are angry because of that,” he said.
Another resident said the looting was bound to happen. Moeketsi Tladi said he was not surprised at what was happening in his area. “People have been upset with what happened. It was only a matter of time,” he said.

Reno Omokri to Buhari: Ask CBN to stop giving your children FOREX

Reno Omokri has described President Buhari as a hypocritical leader for giving an order to CBN to stop granting Foreign Exchange to importers of Food products.

Taking to his social media handle to express his feelings over the recent order, Reno  asked the President to also use his executive powers to stop CBN from granting FOREX to some of his children currently studying abroad. He also asked President Buhari to order CBN to stop issuing FOREX to himself whenever he desires to travel to Europe for medical attention

Quote:Since we also have schools in Nigeria, I hope General Buhari, will order the CBN not to provide forex for his children who currently school in England. So selfish a leader. He wants to ban forex for food for the masses, while he educates his children abroad with our forex. While he is at it, General Buhari should also ask the CBN not to provide forex for medical tourists. No Nigerian has consumed forex for personal reasons like General Buhari, who spent almost 6 months in England in 2017, but the hypocrite doesn't want forex for the masses good!

Meet the 38yr Old Pastor of the Fastest Growing Church In the UK, Who Has Raised Millions to Help Young People

From washing plates to leading the biggest youth movements in the UK. SPAC Nations lead Pastor, Tobi Adegboyega’s passion for youth revival has led to the restoration of thousands of young lives.
At 25 Tobi Adegboyega came to London with nothing but the clothes on his back and a desire to become a Lawyer. Purpose besought him, and he soon grasped the reality that what caused him to travel over foreign waters was much greater than his dream; he would become the biggest defender of the misplaced UK youth.
SPAC Nation is not trapped within the confinements of social trends, neither does it quaver at the sight of challenge. In fact, the influence of the church has triggered shifts in the London socio-political atmosphere, with the cry of one man awakening the hearts of many who drew closer to combat poverty and crime among youth from a plethora of backgrounds.
No being is immune to curiosity that such movement can spark. Walking in to a SPAC Nation service is a mind-blowing sight, reporters from distinguished organisations such as BBC and Channels TV, Channel 4 and many others lurking with anticipation to interview Pastor Tobi. You will see camera crews at every angle of the room hoping to capture every moment not taking an eye away for a second, BBC stated, “nothing like this has been seen before it’s what the nation is calling an astund solution”

As you look into the crowd your attention is immediately captured with the unexpected. What grips the sight is the unconventional diversity in the crowd, from the front row seats occupied by Mayors, Police Chief Officers, high profile dignitaries and professionals sitting amongst young men and women. The most dysfunctional types of individuals including ex-gang leaders, former homeless, teenage parents and the most vulnerable as they stood in unity, love and one accord. Flashes were halted by camera crews tucked amongst the crowds, for all to bear witness of the transcendent transformation from from a background of gangs to being positive agents of change a sight they could not dare to blink and miss.

In 2019 alone, over 90 weapons and drugs have been dropped at the altar, Pastor Tobi has saved the UK millions of pounds from reducing crime from the streets of UK, the retention of prisoners costing England, a whopping £38k per year records state Spac Nation has a 0% reoffending rate. Like many revolutionary and transformative work SPAC Nation and Pastor Tobi has its share of criticism and speculation from some members of the public and Pastor
Tobi’s response is “we must live in a community that embraces freedom of speech however we will not be stopped from doing what is right because of distant and unresearched opinions”.
Housing solutions are provided for young people from all kinds of backgrounds and to date the organisation has invested millions of pounds in helping to accommodate people they seem to prefer this to buying of church buildings that can not accommodate people in need.
Tobi Adegboyega, a Nigerian-born man that has instilled the vision of greatness into the minds of youth as young as 14 year olds ,who have found the voice to speak on behalf of their generation at the houses of Parliament. The Pastor that dared to occupy and claim space, dared to confront the killers of our youth and did not rest until he saw a change.
The pioneering leader’s first stop will be Lagos, Nigeria with a laser-beam focus on the emancipating of the new generation from poverty, hopelessness, insecurity, drug addiction.
He’s doing this with an understanding of the essential needs of job creation and analternative to crime, opportunities as an alternative to hopelessness and a feeding, clothing and education he believes that a new better nigeria is possible for the young.
SPAC Nation seems to have outlined a clear step into helping 100,000 young people but starting with $2million to $20 million into investment and opportunities to helping youngpeople create jobs and opportunities for young people this is being made possible by asyndicate that pastor tobi has put together from London city in order to help young peoplethis sindicate comprises of CEO, COO of global companies SPAC Nation believes it's about relationship not religion.

Nigerian Army uncovers gun factory in Benue State, arrests manufacturer and 9 others

Operatives of the joint military intervention force, code-named Operation Whirl Stroke, OPWS, have uncovered another firearms manufacturing plant in Benue State.

The operatives also successfully arrested the arms manufacturer alongside nine others, including a wanted alleged kidnap kingpin and cattle rustlers operating between Benue and Nasarawa states axis.

Parading the suspects at the OPWS headquarters in Makurdi, the Force Commander, Major General Adeyemi Yekini, said six of the suspects were arrested in Nasarawa State, while four others were apprehended in Benue State. He explained that the arms manufacturing plant and the fabricator, Shekwa Terna, were discovered in Buruku Local Government Area of Benue State, following a tip-off.

Quote:General Yekini noted that “our operation is currently centered on breaking the supply chain of weapon proliferation in the country, because the increasing spate of arms manufacturing is alarming and it is fuelling criminal activities in the country.
“We are targeting weapon manufacturers as a way of breaking the supply chain with a view to reducing the amount of weapons in circulation and curtailing the spate of armed banditry and other criminal activities in the country.”
He added that Seidu Muhammadu, a notorious kidnap kingpin and cattle rustler, along with some of his accomplices, were nabbed in Nasarawa State while Moses Dzever, a gang member of the wanted militia leader, Terwase Akwaza, alias Gana, with one other member responsible for Gana’s logistics, was also arrested in Benue.

The arms manufacturer, who confessed to the crime, said he took over the business from his elder brother after he was arrested by the military months backs.
Quote:In his words: “I learned the work from my elder brother, who had earlier been apprehended. After his arrest, I took over the business. I was sleeping in my house when they came and arrested me. I sell the rifles to people in my community, while I sell the pistols to a client from Onitsha.
“Sometimes, when my client from Onitsha comes, he buys up to 15 weapons at once. So far, I have sold over 50 weapons since I started. But I now regret my action and wished I never went into this in the first place.”

Pay my father’s gratuity or I’ll commit suicide - Man protests at Cross RIver State governor's office

Joseph Odey, 26, an indigene of Yala Local Government Area of Cross River, on Wednesday, August 14th protested the non-payment of his late father’s gratuity valued at N13 million, threatening to commit suicide if the government delays further.

Odey, who spoke to journalists during his protest at the governor’s office in Calabar, said his deceased father, Anthony Odey, served the Cross River Government for 32 years. He added that his father’s last post, was Principal of Government Secondary School, Ebo in Yala Local Government Area of Cross River. According to him, his father died on Dec.12, 2015, three years before his retirement from service.

Quote:“Following his sad death, I commenced processing the papers for payment of his benefits, completed it in 2017 and received official approval in January 2018.
After waiting for another year and no payment was made to my family by the government, I approached the accountant-general of the state about the matter but he told me that no payment was being considered.
“He added that there was a backlog of pending payments stretching back to 2014, all awaiting the governor’s approval. Following this disclosure, I have attempted several times to bring this issue to the governor’s attention, but failed as all messages to that effect were not answered.
“My late father’s gratuity is N13 million and I have the blueprint which I got from the Office of the Accountant- General of the state. My family has been facing hard times since the death of our father who was the breadwinner of the family.
“My two immediate younger sisters at different levels of study in the university are on the verge of dropping out, while the third who passed WAEC and JAMB exams this year faces an uncertain future due to our financial incapacitation”, he said.
He appealed to Governor Ben Ayade to ensure the settlement of the gratuity to enable his siblings to live a decent life. The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Christian Ita, said the present administration inherited a backlog of gratuities from 2013 while reacting to Odey’s protest.

He said the payments for 2013 had been concluded while the ones for 2014 were being paid in batches.
Quote:“The state would definitely pay, what is delaying the payment is a function of money, but it will pay since the young man has gone through the whole process with the office of the accountant-general”, he said.

Gunman arrested after shootout that lasted hours in drug raid gone wrong

A gunman has been arrested hours after he got into a shootout with police officers who arrived at a home in Philadelphia to arrest him on a drugs warrant.

The shootout started at about 4:30 pm local time and lasted for about 5 hours during which the gunman injured several police officers trying to arrest him. Two officers were trapped inside the house with the man for around five hours but were eventually freed by a SWAT team at night. Other officers were forced to jump out through windows and doors to get away from a barrage of bullets.

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross said "that went awry almost immediately."

Police sergeant Eric Gripp confirmed this morning that the gunman had finally been taken into custody. He also said six officers were hit by bullets but have been released from hospital. Three people that officers had taken into custody in the house during the drug raid before the shooting started were also safely evacuated, police said.

Ross added: "It’s nothing short of a miracle that we don’t have multiple officers killed today."

During the shootout, police reasoned with the gunman to surrender and even put his lawyer on the phone with him to try to persuade him to give up.

As the shootout was in progress, Temple University locked down part of its campus, and several children and staff were trapped for some time in a nearby day care.

During the standoff Commissioner Ross said: "We’re doing everything within our power to get him to come out. He has the highest assurance he’s not going to be harmed when he comes out."

Police tried to push crowds of onlookers and residents back from the scene. In police radio broadcasts, officers could be heard calling for backup as reports of officers getting shot poured in.

President Donald Trump and Attorney General William Barr were briefed on the shooting, officials said.

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney said he was thankful that officers’ injuries weren’t life-threatening.

He added: "I’m a little angry about someone having all that weaponry and all that firepower, but we’ll get to that another day."

Posted by: Edoman - 08-15-2019, 12:34 PM - No Replies

President Muhammadu Buhari has sympathised and commiserated with internally displaced persons (IDPs) in eight local governments of Katsina state who were displaced by armed banditry.

Mr Buhari, who sympathised with the victims on Wednesday in Batsari Local Government Area of the state, said that the victims deserved sympathy from the government and other well-meaning Nigerians.

The president was at the camp to sympathise with the victims from Batsari, Safana, Danmusa, Kankara, Jibiya, Sabuwa, Faskari and Dandume local government areas.

“I am here to sympathise with the entire people of the state over the unfortunate incidents that have been claiming lives of innocent people,” he said.

The president said the bandits that have been killing people should not claim to be true Muslims.

“Islam did not give individuals the right to kill others without following due process in the court of law.

“The federal and states government will do everything possible to eradicate all forms of insecurity in the nation as soldiers and police have been given all the necessary support by the government.

“We are doing our best to checkmate the activities of armed bandits and insurgents in the country.”

Earlier, Governor Aminu Masari of Katsina State said: “We have assembled some of the victims, and their representative comprising their traditional, religious and community leader before the president.

“The communities living along the fringes of Rugu Forest across these eight LGA’s had to contend with series of recurring incidents of armed bandits,” he said.

In his remarks, the Emir of Katsina, Abdulmumini Kabir, called on the rural people not to hoard information’s about the bandits.

Mr Kabir advised the rural people to always pass information about the armed bandits to their traditional rulers or the security agencies for action.

Eight local government areas of the state had been experiencing the activities of armed bandits and cattle rustlers for the past two years.

FG Reacts To Killing Of Nigerian Pastor By Chinese Government

Quote:The Federal Government has demanded a probe into the killing of Mr Joseph Nwajueze, a Nigerian pastor based in China, Igbere TV reports.

Igbere TV reports that the Anambra-born clergyman was reportedly killed by Chinese security operatives.

In a statement made available to Igbere TV on Wednesday, Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman, Nigerians in the Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), said a thorough investigation into the death of the pastor should be launched.

She added that the killing of the pastor must be thoroughly investigated and the culprits brought to book.

In the statement which was signed by Abdur-Rahman Balogun, her media aide, Dabiri-Erewa said there was no justifiable reason for the killing.

She equally condemned the “stigmatisation” of Nigerians living in China, saying those who were found guilty of the country’s laws should be prosecuted.

While condoling with the family of Nwajueze, the Nigerian official promised to ensure that justice is served.

She, however, appealed to angry Nigerians in China to be patient and not take the law into their hands.

Igbere TV reports that the deceased was living with his wife, Chinwe and four children in China until his death.

He was said to be killed by China’s security operatives while trying to escape arrest for alleged visa violations.

Over 6,000 Nigerians under crime investigation in South Africa - High Commissioner raises alarm

Nigeria’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Ambassador Kabir Bala has revealed that over 6,000 Nigerians are being investigated by the South African authorities for various crimes.

The High Commissioner said the statistics which is from the South African Police Service also revealed that the crimes centered on drug-related offences, murder, fraud and armed robbery.

Quote:“We have to look at it from a proper perspective so that we don’t tilt the balance. And then we overlook the fact that some of our nationals engage in things that are not legal here.
“We have 6, 089 of them having cases that are being concluded or investigated and some of them in prison, we have them,” he said.

Admitting that the figures gotten after a diplomatic meeting which had South Africa's Police Minister Bheki Cele and other top police officials present were shocking, Bala told Channels Television that these Nigerians have the right to a fair trial before being convicted according to the country's laws if found guilty.

Woman doctors told she might never have kids became pregnant with twins at age 41 after a one-night stand

A woman who doctors warned she might never have kids, due to a very low number of ovarian follicles, became pregnant with twins at the age of 41 after a one-night stand.

Doctors told Monica Dylan, now 42, she had a very low number of ovarian follicles, which means a big drop in fertility. She was told she might never bear kids naturally and she resigned herself to fate.

However,  the retail manager defied the odds and became pregnant while on a Mediterranean cruise with pal Anita Bristol, 38. She gave birth to daughters Athena and Luna on January 7.

Speaking exclusively to Fabulous Digital, Monica said: “One night, I spent hours chatting to a man I met on the cruise - who was gorgeous and stylish - and couldn’t ignore the spark between us.

“One thing led to another and, to my surprise, we ended up having sex.

“We’d had one too many drinks - the reason we hadn’t used contraception.

“Looking back, I knew it was foolish. But, at the same time, I was thrilled when I realised I might be having a baby.”

Monica continued: “I hadn’t been home long when I started feeling funny. I felt dizzy, like I was still at sea.

“I searched my symptoms online and self-diagnosed myself with post-motion sickness, which is apparently quite normal after a cruise.

“When the queasiness didn’t subside, the possibility of being pregnant crossed my mind, but I knew that was unlikely.

“I bought a test to rule it out and was gobsmacked when I saw the second pink link appear on the stick.”

Monica explained that she always wanted kids and had split from previous partners because they didn't want kids.  She thought her ex was the perfect man for her but he eventually changed his mind about having kids and they split up, leaving her devastated.

After splitting from her ex, Monica's friend Anita suggested a girls' trip to cheer her up and Monica, who still hoped to become a mum, tossed a couple of Euros into Rome's Trevi fountain and wished for a kid.

Monica said: “Anita had been talking about going on a cruise for a while and it seemed like the right time for a trip away.

“I’ve known Anita for 20 years and if anyone knows how to have a good time, it’s her. I knew I was in good hands. On the ship, we began discussing my new life plan.

“We agreed to make the most of our freedom by enjoying nights out and weekends away, travelling the world and maybe even living abroad together for a while.

“We also planned to look after each other when we were older and I decided I could simply spoil my nieces and nephews, rather than have a baby of my own.”

On one night during their vacation, the friends arranged to have dinner with two men they'd met earlier on the trip.  One of the men ended up becoming the father of Monica's kids.

Monica said: “Anita nagged me to make an effort for dinner and drinks. I was happy with what I’d been wearing all day, but somehow she convinced me to dress up. It’s lucky I did.

Monica said she was shocked to discover she was pregnant. Then during her 8-week scan, she had another shock when she was told she was expecting a set of twins.

She said: “The sonographer turned the screen around. He showed me my baby and then he moved the wand slightly and said, ‘And here’s the other one.’

“I thought he was joking and my friend who had come with me burst into tears, which set the nurse off crying too.

“It quickly dawned on me that I wasn’t just going to be a mum, but a mum of twins. I was so shocked I didn’t say much until the news finally sunk in."

She continued: “When I told Anita, she screeched down the phone with excitement.

“I also told the father of the twins and he was really good about it.

“Despite us not being in a relationship, he respected my decision to go ahead with the pregnancy and said I had his full support.”

Monica was induced at 37 weeks and was rushed into theatre for an emergency C-section when one of her placentas ruptured. She welcomed her non-identical twin daughters two days before her 42nd birthday.

She said: “When I held them both in my arms, it was such a strange feeling. They were so beautiful, I couldn’t stop gazing at them.

“My daughters were the best birthday presents I could ask for.

“Becoming a mother hasn’t worked out the way I always imagined it would and I know there will be tough times ahead, especially being a single mum, but I have a lot of love to give to Athena and Luna. They are certainly keeping me on my toes.

"Life is hectic and I’m exhausted - but I’m loving life with my girls. They make me laugh all the time.

“I’m so grateful to Anita for encouraging me to make an effort that fateful night.

“Having a holiday fling was definitely out of character for me but I’m so glad it happened, I can’t imagine life without Athena and Luna.

“I wanted a child for so long and now am lucky enough to have two.”

My close associates said I was wasting money educating my daughters" - Father of best graduating student of University of Abuja says

Akawu Adamu, a police officer serving in the FCT, whose daughter Talatu Adamu emerged as the best graduating student of University of Abuja, revealed that some of his close associates said he was wasting time and money educating his daughters as the girls were likely not to complete their education or may get pregnant in the process.

Quote:I am excited. I have five children – four girls and my fifth child who is a boy. My passion for education has always made me ensure that none of them is out of school. They are always in school so I have hope that they will become great in their endeavours. My desire to enroll them in school was borne out of my passion for education.  Being who I am, I do not listen to them. But the discouragement came from different people because they are all girls. But as for me, I was not discouraged because I believe that anything a boy can do a girl can do better. That is my policy. he said in an interview with Aso Chronicles

Mr Adamu disclosed this when the Chairman of Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) Hon. Abdullahi Adamu Candido honoured his daughter who emerged the overall student in University of Abuja with 4.81 Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) for 2018/2019 academic session.
Quote:
I can remember some of my close associates who said I was just wasting my time, that the girl might not complete her education or somebody might impregnate her. They said my money and efforts would be wasted at the end. But I maintained my stance. I told them if that is how my money will be wasted, so be it.
‘What a man can do, a woman can do better’, that has always been my policy from the beginning so I was not bothered by whatever people said about my children. I don’t have to say anything to those people because they can now see what has happened. I just pray that God should broaden their minds to abandon such utterances. Adamu continued.

Talatu Adamu studied B.Sc Chemistry. Her academic career began at LEA Primary School Kuchingoro. She took first position in all her examinations from Primary to Secondary School. She was also the overall best WAEC candidate the year she wrote the exam. She then attended the University of Abuja where she emerged as the best graduating student.

Quote:My advice is that they should not segregate among their children. Whether a girl or a boy, they should believe that their children would go far in life. Some people believe that girls should not be enrolled in school because they would end up in the kitchen but we have the likes of Sirleaf of Liberia, Dora Akunyilli and several other great women. All of them belonged to a family. My advice to parents is that they should treat a girl-child equally as a boy. Adamu added

Hon. Candido also commended Talatu for making FCT indigenes proud and donated the sum of Five Hundred Thousand Naira Only (N 500,000.00) to her. He said that Talatu shall be given undergraduate assistant Job opportunity and automatic admission for her Master's programme, by the state government.

Man, 35, dies during sex marathon with 50-year-old widow in Kenya

A 35-year-old man died in mysterious circumstances while having sex with a 50-year-old widow in a maize plantation in Sachangwan-Chebyakwai, near Eldoret International Airport in Uasin Gishu County on Monday.

The deceased identified as Julius Kiptoo is said to have been on a drinking spree until late night at a local bar on Sunday before hooking up with the woman whose name could not be immediately established.

When journalists toured the area on Monday morning, shocked residents were seen trooping to a maize plantation where the duo had their romp to view the lifeless body of the young man.

The woman narrated to detectives who arrived at the scene how the young man became obsessed with nonstop sex after swallowing a sex booster pill.
“We were headed to the house but he became impatient and demanded that we do it at the maize plantation. However, he started becoming sick in the process before dying instantly,” said the woman.

She said that she later called neighbours who confirmed that the young man, who does menial jobs in the village, had died.

Police from the nearby Kiambaa Police station who arrived at the scene moved the body to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) Mortuary.

The woman was on the receiving end from irate villagers who blasted her for being a bad example to young women in the village by moving with younger men.
“This is very embarrassing. We look up to such women for guidance but they are the ones spoiling young people,” said Susan Jerotich, a resident told Nairobi news.

FG apologizes to India over El-Zakzaky, accuses Shiites leader of being 'unruly'

The Nigerian government in a statement released by the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Information and Culture, Grace Gekpe on Wednesday August 14, accused the leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky of being unruly upon arriving India for treatment.

The statement which countered claims of the IMN leader being treated like a criminal under heavy security surveillance in India, disclosed what led to the issue while pointing out that El-Zakzaky was allowed to embark on the trip with state officials in line with a court order and his choice to be accompanied by his aides and personal doctors was not opposed.

The IMN leader was accused of requesting to be allowed to check into 5-Star Hotel instead of being admitted in the hospital, and also demanding that the Police protection be withdrawn from him by the Indian authorities.

Read the statement in full below;

Quote:THE TRUE STORY ON EL-ZAKZAKY IN INDIA
The Court on 5th August 2019 granted Sheikh Ibraheem EL-Zakzaky leave to travel to India for medical treatment. Consequently, the Government and its relevant agencies took steps to comply with the Order.
In line with the Court Order, El-Zakzaky was approved to embark on the trip with State officials and his choice to be accompanied by his aides and personal Doctors was not opposed by the government.
“On 12th August, 2019, he and other members of the entourage went to India via Dubai. It is to be noted that El-Zakzaky particularly chose Medanta Hospital, India.
“However, on reaching Dubai, El-Zakzaky began to display ulterior motives against laid down procedures.
“He requested that his passport be handed over to him but the State officials would not budge to his pressure. The situation became worse in India as he refused to subject himself to preliminary medical checks.
“In addition, he demanded free movement and access to visitors of all kinds as well as requested to be allowed to check into a 5-Star Hotel instead of being admitted in the hospital.
“The request was refused on the ground that he came into the country for medicals and not as a tourist (more so that his Visa was issued on medical grounds and not for tourism). He also demanded that Police protection be withdrawn from him by the Indian authorities.
“Against medical ethics and standard practice, he requested to nominate Doctors of his choice to join the ones tasked by Medanta Hospital to perform medical treatment on him and his wife.
“This created a stalemate, which the Hospital insisted that he would not dictate to it on the choice of medical personnel to carry the required medical treatment.
“Frustrated by his antics, the Indian authorities have expressed willingness to return him to Nigeria with immediate effect. This is on the account that they will not allow him use their country to internationalize his group’s activities.
“Against this background, the Nigerian government wishes to commend the stand of the Indian Government as well as apologize to her for the unruly behaviour of El-Zakzaky. Similarly, the attention of the public and indeed the international community is hereby drawn to these unfortunate developments.
“The government also wishes to use this opportunity to affirm its readiness to undertake the prosecution of El-Zakzaky through due process if and when he is returned to the country. On this note, his foul cry that he is being held in circumstances worse than he was in Nigeria should be disregarded.”

RHAPSODY OF REALITIES

THURSDAY, 15TH AUGUST

LOVE NOT THE WORLD

As is the earthy, such are they also that are earthy… (1 Corinthians 15:48).

Our opening verse refers to those who aren’t born again as earthy; that means they’re of this world. All they know is in this world; that’s their life. This is the reason for the failures of men; it’s traced to the fallen Adam. This is why Jesus said, “...Ye must be born again” (John 3:7).

If a man continues with the life with which he came into this world from his parents, he’ll be a failure, no matter how hard he tries. It makes no difference what wealth he enjoys, he’ll still become a failure. There’re people who got to the zenith of their career; they became powerful and influential, but at some point, they realized there was more to life.

Jesus said to His disciples, “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” (Mark 8:36). He was telling them to be careful not to put their attention in this world. This world may offer you everything, but it’s not enough. What God offers is the best and it’s all you need.

1 John 2:15 says, “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” Sadly, there’re those who love the world and the things of the world, even after they’ve become Christians.

For example, in 2 Timothy 4:10, we read about Demas. He was one of Apostle Paul’s co-labourers in the Gospel. But read his pathetic end in the words of Paul: “For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is departed unto Thessalonica….” Demas worked with Paul and saw the great miracles wrought by the Spirit through Paul, but he compromised along the line. He deviated from the way and life of the Spirit, because he loved the world. The same thing happens to many people today. Paul the Apostle declared: “I am crucified unto the world, and the world is crucified unto me” (Galatians 6:14). This ought to be your persuasion and consciousness.

Come to that point in your life, in your spiritual growth, where your only passion is the expansion of God’s Kingdom; where Christ—His love and His soon return—is all you desire and live for.

CONFESSION

I’m crucified unto the world, and the world is crucified unto me! I live for Christ and the spread of the Gospel, which is the power of God unto salvation to all who believe. I’m an ambassador for Christ, called to establish heaven and righteousness in the hearts of men, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

FURTHER STUDY:

Matthew 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

James 4:4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

#TALKINGSESSION

15TH AUGUST.

KINDLY SAY THESE WORDS OUT LOUD

Dear Lord, I thank You for the privilege of insight into the mysteries of Your eternal Kingdom. I’ve become a dispenser of the unsearchable riches of Christ. Through me, Your wisdom is manifested, Your grace is showcased, and the love of Christ is demonstrated to my world. I thank You blessed Father, for giving me a brand new life in Christ.

Everything about my life is infused with divinity and speaks of Your glory. Eternal life, love, health, peace, joy, righteousness, prosperity; You’ve made them mine! Thank You for this extraordinary life of glory and excellence I have in Christ. My life is the fulfilment of the destiny that You’ve ordained for me, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Big Brother Naija 2019, BBNaija housemate, Khafi tried to hold back tears but could not, as she ended her rift with Venita over acting roles in today’s task.
The ‘Pepper Dem’ gang housemates were given the task of organising a coronation and grand reception in the form of drama for Seyi, who won the Head of House challenge for the second week.

The rift started when Venita demanded a significant role in the drama on the grounds that acting is her profession.
Similarly, Khafi also wanted a significant role, admitting to Esther that she really never wanted singing roles and that acting was her thing.
Venita however responded by saying: “My primary job is acting and I have won awards, while you are just a police officer.”

Seyi, in the process of settling issues with the duo, almost got into a face-off with Khafi.
Both parties seem to have come to a common agreement as Venita apologised to Khafi for responding to her rudely.

Big Brother Naija, BBNaija housemate, Tacha has reacted to Enkay’s recent attitude towards fellow housemate, Cindy.
DAILY POST had reported that Enkay on Monday rejected Cindy’s proposal to stay with her while they play Ludo game.

According to her, she would rather scatter the game than let Cindy play with her.
“I will leave you and still not play if you scatter the Ludo game, I want to play it alone.Cindy I don’t want to play with you, I’ll leave the game for you,” Enkay said.
She also shouted at Cindy for using her slippers in the house.

Her reaction raised eyebrows and did not go down well with some BBNaija fans who accused Enkay of looking down at Cindy.
However, Cindy approached Tacha on Tuesday afternoon, complaining about Enkay’s attitude towards her.
In response, Tacha advised Cindy to confront Enkay and tell her to stop complaining and looking down on her.

She said, “Go and meet her and tell her your mind Cindy!
“No faking in this house, everyone has equal rights.”

Eze Philip Ajomiwe, the Traditional Ruler of Oriendu Autonomous Community in Ohuhu Clan, Umuahia North Local government area of Abia state, has cried out over alleged invasion of his farmland by Fulani herders.
This was even as he (Ajomiwe) called on President Muhammadu Buhari to as a matter of urgency, call the herders to order henceforth.

The Monarch, who spoke with reporters on Wednesday in Umuahia, the state capital, regretted that so far, he has lost vast hectre of farm land and millions of naira to the dreaded herdsmen.
On the suspended RUGA settlement by the federal government, Ajomiwe, warned that it should not be extended to the South East.
“If such happens in South East zone, it will give them more clout to perpetrate their wicked act. I’m wondering why the Federal government should ask for a land for such settlement when they know that there is inadequacy of land in the South East”.

He further hinted that he had since lodged a complain to the security agencies in the State over the attack done on his farmland, stressing that nothing had been done ever since.
Ajomiwe, however, commended Governor Okezie Ikpeazu for not yielding to pressure to provide land for such settlement in the State

Reverend Elisha Noma of Nigeria Baptist Church , Angwan Makiri, has been kidnapped by unknown gunmen near Udawa, Chikun Local Government area of Kaduna State.
This comes barely two weeks after a
Pastor in charge of Living Faith Church, Angwan Romi, Kaduna, Jeremiah Omolewa was killed and his wife abducted.

According to The Nation, armed kidnappers, numbering about 20, stormed the village around 1:30 am Wednesday and forced their way into the Pastor’s house and went away with him and his son.
The kidnapper later freed the son, Emmanuel Elisha, who was threatened to go and raise unspecified amount of money as ransom.
They threatened the son that the father would be killed if he failed to provide the ransom within five days.

According to the pastor’s son, “They came around 1 am. They were about 20 armed men and started hitting at doors but nobody opened.
“They then forced their way into houses and vandalised properties. They carted away some valuables including mobile phones and clothing in my mother’s box.
“They picked me together with my father. But after a while into the bush, I was released and they went away with my father. One of them was dressed in military camouflage.

“As they released me, they threatened that if we fail to bring money in five days even though they didn’t mention the specific ransom, they will kill him.
“We are yet to report to the police because even when we had similar experience in the past and we contacted them, they did not do anything about it. So, it is of no use,” he said.

NCAA Issues Ebola Alert To Airlines, Calls For Vigilance
User Avatar Forum: Market Place
Posted by: Edoman - 08-14-2019, 05:46 PM - No Replies

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has issued warning to airlines over the resurgence of the deadly Ebola Virus Disease (EVD). This followed the World Health Organization (WHO’s) declaration of Ebola outbreak as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).

Consequently, the NCAA directed all operators, especially airlines operating regional and international flights into the country, to exercise a high level of vigilance. Spokesman of the NCAA, Mr. Sam Adurogboye said the directive was contained in a letter signed by the NCAA Director General, Capt. Muhtar Usman to all airline operators. In the letter, NCAA directed airlines’ Pilots in Command (PIC) to report to Air Traffic Control (ATC) any suspected case of communicable disease on board their flight in line with Civil Aviation Regulations (Nig.CARs 18.8.22.4).

The NCAA explained that in case of a suspected case of communicable disease on board an aircraft, aircrew are required to fill the General Declaration (Gen Dec) and Public Health Passenger Locator forms as required by the regulations. Thereafter, completed forms are to be submitted to the Port Health Services (PHS) of the destination aerodrome, NCAA said.

The authority also directed operators to contact Port Health Services for clearance before importing human remains into the country in the event of death of a patient. “Airlines are to report to NCAA in writing any suspected case of communicable disease on board any flight,” the NCAA said. Airlines were also advised to “ensure they have on board valid and appropriate number of First Aid kits, Universal Precaution Kits (UPKs) and Emergency Medical kits in line with Nig.CARS 7.9.1.11 and 7.9.1.12.”

They were also required to refresh the knowledge of their Crew members (flight deck and cabin crew) for improved and sustained proficiency in handling and communication with ATC of any suspected case of communicable disease on board. The authority said the ATCs shall immediately communicate to Port Health Services (PHS) any report of a suspected case of communicable disease on board aircraft in line with Nig. CARs 18.8.22.4. The NCAA said it expects strict compliance with the directives, adding it will collaborate with all relevant agencies to prevent the incursion of Ebola or any communicable disease into the country.

''I want to return to Nigeria'' El-Zakzaky cries out

Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, the leader of the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria aka Shi'ites, has decried the poor state of the Hospital in India he was taken to and has requested to return to Nigeria.

In an audio making the rounds on social media, El-Zakzaky said he fears for his life and that of his wife as the medical doctors his personal doctor in Nigeria referred them to in India, is not the one he and his wife are currently seeing.

Accoridng to him, the Nigerian Embassy in India took him to a totally different hospital which according to him, is worse than the Kirikiri prison.

Speaking in Hausa, El-Zakzaky said

Quote:“The hospital officials received us well they told us that they parked two ambulance vehicles, deceiving the crowd while taking us out through another way, saying that it was for our own safety. On getting to the hospital, we are placed under a tighter security situation worse than what we have been witnessed in Nigeria. We are currently more confined than when we were in Nigeria, worse than prison setting.
“Contrary to what was agreed before our arrival, that our own personal doctors would supervise this treatment. Now they’ve changed the arrangement. So, we objected receiving treatment from strange doctors without the supervision of our own trusted physicians.
Godwilling, we will be going back to Nigeria so that we will be able to travel to another place since we have that approval. Since we can't trust India any longer, there are some other countries like Malaysia, Indonesia and Turkey who have offered to admit us. We will go back home and decide which one to go for,’’ he said.

Mark Edaile: Family Of Policeman Killed By Soldiers Demands Justice
User Avatar Forum: News

Family of one the police officers, who were murdered by soldiers of the 93 Battalion in Taraba State, has demanded justice over the gruesome murder of their son, Inspector Mark Edaile.

The immediate elderly brother of the slain officer, Andrew Edaile, who disclosed this at a press conference in Abuja on Monday, also called for an independent enquiry by local and international bodies to unravel the death of the officer who has served the nation for 16years.

He warned that if the Nigerian government fails to carry out a thorough investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice, the family would resolve that the murder of the late police officer was an act of conspiracy.

“We come before all well-meaning Nigerians and the international community at large to voice out our displeasure over the gruesome murder and inglorious killing of our brother who went on official duty for his beloved country that he has served for over 16years,” Andrew Edaile said.

“We vehemently speak against the perpetrators of this heinous act by the Nigerian Army and we demand a very thorough investigation by national, international community and as well independent body so that justice will be truly served.

Edaile, who was flanked by the wife of the victim, Olubunmi Edaile and other members of his family blamed the army for the death of the inspector.

“The same Army that is charged with protecting the citizens of the country happens to be the perpetrators at the helm of this heinous and barbaric act.

“Our question is, who are these soldiers working for? Whose side are they on? And whose payroll are these military personnel on? This and many more questions we demand answers to. We also demand to know the kidnapper was released by the army.

He noted that the action has called to question the integrity of the law of Nigeria while adding that it also causes grief to the families of the late police officer.

Edaile explained that the family have been shattered since the news of the murder of their late brother broke.

“Nothing should be swept under the carpet and we demand justice, we also want the perpetrators to be brought to book.

Tragedy as 65-yr-old Nigerian man falls from 5th floor of high court building while trying to find a toilet
[Image: edo.jpg]
The lifeless body of a 65-year-old man was found Tuesday hanging in an uncompleted lift inside a Nigerian high court building after he fell in the premises while trying to find a toilet.
The deceased, Moses Airhiagbonkpa, who is a father of five, was in the Edo State High Court in Benin, the capital, for a case relating to land dispute when he fell from the fifth floor of the court complex and died, according to local reports.

An official explained that the deceased was at Court 10 and had gone to urinate but didn’t ask for directions. He subsequently went through a door he thought was the toilet and fell to his death.
S

“We used to have a lift that has gone bad and this administration is fixing it. The company carrying out the renovation work removed the old lift and is still working on it. The MD of the firm said there was a ribbon indicating no passage but that I cannot say anything about,” said the official who pleaded anonymity.
A relative of the deceased, Johnson Obanor, who was also in court, spoke to journalists on the incident.
“We came here this morning, the three of us and we entered the court and sat down before the arrival of our lawyer. We later discovered that the court is not sitting. When our lawyer came, she went to the table to take a date.

“He (the deceased) got up and told us he wanted to urinate and we told him to return early so that we can go home after the lawyer has taken a date.
“We waited for a long period but he did not show up. So, we assumed he has gone downstairs to wait for us where we parked our vehicle.
“Then, I told the other man that we should go to the parking lot to check if he was there, but unfortunately we did not see him. We sat down in the vehicle and tried to contact him but he was not picking his calls.
“We decided to search for him within the premises and met a lawyer who asked us to join the crowd to climb the staircase.”

“Sadly, we met our brother lying down on the floor and someone said he fell from upstairs. They traced the blood and found he got stuck (in the lift hole),” Obanor was quoted by PM News Nigeria.

The tragedy attracted a large number of people with other relatives of the deceased blaming A&K Construction, the firm handling renovation of the court complex for the incident.
The construction company is yet to comment over the incident while security agencies have launched investigations.

Big Grin Tanzanian authorities to publish names of married men to protect single women

Tanzanian authorities to publish names of married men to protect single women
[Image: magufuli-2.png]Tanzanian President John Magufuli
Authorities in Tanzania are considering publishing the identities of all married men on a website run by a state agency as part of efforts to curb cheating and protect young women from “unnecessary heartbreaks.”
Dar es Salaam regional commissioner, Paul Makonda, who disclosed this on Monday, August 12, said: “I have received a lot of complaints from young women. Many women from Dar es Salaam region have been deceived many times, and they have had enough.

“Men have been promising to marry them, then later, they ditch the ladies and this is something that is humiliating,” the regional commissioner said.
S
“These cunning men have left many women nursing heartbreaks and emotional bruises. You’ll find a young man successfully wooing a woman, making her leave every other thing that she does, hoping that the man will marry her, not knowing that he is, indeed, conning her.
“If you look at the laws that we have in the country, there is a clause that protects women, who were promised marriages, only to be used and dumped. We want to use that clause to bring sanity in relationships.”
If adopted, all married people would be required to register their marital statuses with the region’s database agency. Any woman who has been promised marriage can then access the database to find out if the man who has made that promise is already married or not.

In that database, all the marriages, including Christian, customary, Muslim, those filed at the registrar of marriages, will be registered, Makonda said.
“We want to reduce the cases of men conning women in the name of love and marriages.
“We are planning to meet the State agency in charge of the citizens’ database. Once that meeting is done, you, who lied to a woman that you will marry her, but ended up using and dumping her, be prepared, we are coming for you.”
This development comes after Tanzanian women were recently pressurized to produce more children when the country’s president, John Magufuli reiterated the need to have a higher birth rate to boost the economy.

Magufuli, who had earlier spoken against contraceptives, believes women should “set ovaries free” and give birth to more children to turn the East African country into a regional powerhouse, a move critics say would rather worsen poverty and inequality.

Tanzania is home to some 55.5 million people, according to the World Bank, an increase from 10 million when it gained independence in 1961. The country also has one of the world’s highest birth rates – around 5 children per woman while figures from the UN Population Fund, UNFPA, indicate that the population is growing by about 2.7 percent a year.
Most young people do not have jobs while most public schools and hospitals are overcrowded.
Most women in Tanzania use contraceptives to curb the high rates of births, but Magufuli is against that, saying that the country needs more people to build the economy.
This is the same president who upheld a controversial 2002 law in 2017 that bans pregnant schoolgirls from returning to school after giving birth. He also supported the order to arrest all pregnant schoolgirls to serve as a deterrent.

The other reason behind their arrest was to end the growing teenage pregnancies in the country, prevent other girls from engaging in sexual activities and get the girls to testify against the culprits who are on the run, district official Mohammed Azizi told local media.
The country continues to deny its citizens human rights as the media, opposition parties and musicians have all been victims of the regime which has formulated laws that stifle dissent and violate freedom of expression.
Unfortunately, women are the most affected in Tanzania as the men propose the laws and they only have to obey.
This June, women became the target of certain unpopular decisions by the Magufuli administration after announcing moves to impose a tax on wigs and hair extensions.
Finance Minister Philip Mpango, in his budget speech in parliament, announced a 25 per cent tax on imported wigs and hair extensions and a 10% tax on those made locally. He said that these were part of measures aimed at increasing government revenue.

Those in support of the levy said it will make women keep their natural hair, but critics, largely women, felt the decision is mainly to hurt them.
“People love artificial hair. Why of all the things that could be taxed did they opt for wigs?” a popular Tanzanian importer of wigs, Annasatasia Sigera asked while speaking with the BBC.
For others, the measure could ruin relationships, as most men in Tanzania are used to seeing their wives with wigs and extensions, a trend that many young women have embraced.
Tanzanian women were also up in arms against the government’s decision to scrap the exemption on value-added tax placed on sanitary towels. Finance Minister Mpango explained that since that exemption was introduced, consumers had not benefited as businesses refused to reduce their prices, but women described the measure as unfair.

18-year old daughter of British millionaire found dead in swimming pool during vacation in Spain

The British teenager who was found dead in a swimming pool while on holiday in Spain has been identified as the daughter of millionaire entrepreneur, Rachel Clacher.

Josie Clacher, who would have turned 19 later this month, was found dead at a villa in the town of Alaro, in Majorca, on Tuesday morning by friends after a night out. A neighbour raised the alarm after hearing a loud noise. Police and paramedics raced to the scene and tried to revive her using CPR. They were unable to save her life and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Josie is the daughter of Rachel Clacher who founded phone answering service Moneypenny, which was valued at £100million last year. A spokeswoman for Moneypenny said: 'We are all extremely devastated and our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this tragic time.'

The tragedy happened around 7am at a villa in the town of Alaro at the foot of the Tramuntana mountains where she was staying with friends and family, including her mother.

Josie studied at prestigious boarding school Moreton Hall near Oswestry in north Shropshire.
Her mum founded Wrexham-based Moneypenny, said to be worth more than £100million, with her brother Ed Reeves in 2000. In 2014 she established the Moneypenny Foundation, a charity now called WeMindTheGap, which gives new opportunities in life and work to unemployed, under-served young people through holistic paid traineeships. She was appointed a CBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours List earlier this year.

''A completely out-of-touch leader’' - Oby Ezekwesili rubbishes President Buhari's claim of food security in Nigeria

Oby Ezekwesili has rubbished President Buhari's claim of Food security in Nigeria.

Recall that the President yesterday said the Agricultural sector under his administration has recorded massive growth and development as more billionaires have emerged through agriculture and most importantly, there is full food security.

Describing President Buhari as a ''completely out-of-touch leader’', Ezekwesili who was a former Minister of Education, lambasted the claims made by the President. She described as a ''blunder'' Preident Buhari's directive to the Central Bank of Nigeria not to issue Foreign exchange to importers of food products.

Herdsmen clash in Imo over stolen cows

There was panic in Agbala, Owerri North Local Government Area of Imo State on Tuesday August 13 after a Fulani herdsman allegedly stabbed another in order to steal his cows, but was caught by other herdsmen who stabbed him repeatedly as punishment for his actions.

It was gathered that the two herdsmen were rushed to the emergency unit of the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri.

Quote:Punchng quoted a source as saying, “What happened was that a Fulani herdsman had gone into the bush where his kinsman and his cows were staying. While the man in the bush was sleeping, his kinsman stabbed him mercilessly and left with the victim’s cows thinking that he was dead.
“However, another Fulani herdsman, who was in the bush, quickly alerted the other herdsmen. They monitored his movement until reinforcement arrived. The other herders first recovered the stolen cows before stabbing him repeatedly. It was the villagers, who alerted the police.
The man was rescued and the two victims were rushed to the emergency unit of the FMC, Owerri. This issue would have degenerated if not that another Fulani herdsman witnessed it."
The attacks caused a gridlock on the Owerri-Aba Road. The police spokesperson in the state, Orlando Ikeokwu, said the two herdsmen were responding to treatment in hospital.

For this, you will have to diet sensibly and exercise frequently. Alka Tone Keto During times of uncertainty, especially when the scales are involved, measure how your clothes fit.   Breaking: Buhari, APC Want Atiku’s 28,000 Exhibits Expunged

Buhari, APC want Atiku’s 28,000 exhibits expunged

President Muhammadu Buhari and his All Progressives Congress have asked the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal to expunge from its records over 28,000 result sheets of the February 23, 2019 election in 10 states tendered by the Peoples Democratic Party and its candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

They also urged the Justice Mohammed Garba-led tribunal of five judges to reject the testimony of the petitioners’ 40th, 59th and 60th witnesses.

Atiku’s spokesperson, Mr Segun Showunmi, was the 40th witness; David Njorga from Kenya, who was described by the petitioners as their “expert witness,” was the PW 59; while Joseph Gbenga, a data analyst was the PW 60.

Buhari and his party also asked the tribunal to reject a separate set of 33 documents, which included the Certified True Copies of Form CF001 (personal particulars) submitted by Buhari to the Independent National Electoral Commission as the presidential candidate of his party, other INEC documents and some newspaper reports.

Among the 28,428 documents, whose admissibility was being challenged by Buhari and the APC, are 28,395 certified true copies of polling unit, local government, ward and state result sheets of 10 states.

The states are Yobe (1,732 result sheets), Kebbi (2,106), Borno (3,472), Kano (5,806), Bauchi (3,599), Katsina (3,378), Jigawa (3,162), Kaduna (3,335A), Zamfara (eight) and Niger (1,797).

Buhari and the APC prayers, urging the tribunal not to act on the documents, are contained in their separate objections to the admissibility of the petitioners’ documents earlier admitted conditionally as exhibits by the tribunal.

Copies of the filings by the 2nd and 3rd respondents (Buhari and APC) obtained by The PUNCH on Tuesday were filed alongside their separate final addresses in which they urged the tribunal to dismiss Atiku’s petition against Buhari for lacking in merit.

The tribunal had fixed August 21 for parties to present their closing arguments in respect of the petition challenging the victory of Buhari and the APC at the February 23, 2019 poll.

APC’s lawyer, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), urged the tribunal to “expunge” the documents from the record of proceedings on the grounds that they were “wrongly admitted in evidence” when they “are legally inadmissible.”

He contended that while some of them “are documentary hearsay evidence that should not have been admitted by the honourable court in the first place,” others were inadmissible on the grounds that they were tendered from the bar despite being disputed by the APC.

On the evidence of the petitioners’ witnesses numbers 40, 59 and 60, Buhari’s lawyer, Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN), said their testimonies were in violation of the March 6, 2019 order of the tribunal, which dismissed the petitioners’ request to be granted access to an alleged server in which they claimed INEC stored the authentic results of the last presidential election.

Showunmi (PW40) had tendered some video evidence to prove the petitioners’ case of the existence of the server.

Njorga (PW 59) also gave evidence and tendered his report on the existence of the said server, while Gbenga (PW 60) also gave evidence and tendered his report of the analysis of the results of the election in 11 states.

Olanipekun faulted the evidence of the witnesses which he argued emerged “in express violation of a subsisting order of court, same germinates in stark abuse of the process of this honourable court.”

I Will Fight For The Poor – Buhari
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion

According to media reports, President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday in Daura, Katsina State, said he will use his second term in office to improve the lives of Nigerians by paying close attention to the poor and those on the lower rungs of society.

Addressing leaders of various communities from five Local Government Areas of Daura Emirate, who paid him a visit as part of Eid El-Kabir celebration, the President said he is convinced that majority of Nigerians understand who he is and his mission, on account of which they returned him for a second term in office with larger margin of votes than 2015.

In a statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, the President said “You know how much I laboured to get here. I ran three times in the past. The fourth time, God used technology to do it for me. The fifth time I ran (February 23, 2019), I went to all the states of the federation. The turnout of crowds was overwhelming.

“Truly, the people know and understand my mission. This is what the votes showed. The administration will dwell on our campaign issues — security, economy and corruption. We will fight for the poor,” the President said.

He emphasized the important place of agriculture under his administration, promising to appoint a minister who is knowledgeable and will know how to promote interest and investment in the sector.

“I will appoint a minister who knows agriculture and its role in providing jobs and growing our economy. You have seen how we broke the fertiliser jinx in the country. We will do more to better the lots of our farmers. Agriculture is our strength,” he added.

President Buhari expressed happiness with the changing attitude of young people to agriculture, with many earning respectable incomes, urging all of those without regular incomes to return to the farm.

In his remarks, Hon. Yusuf Bello Mai’ Aduwa, one the leaders of the delegation, thanked Nigerians for giving the President a second mandate to lead the country for another four years, stressing that he will not let the country down.

Mohammed Saleh, another community leader, said the communities under the Daura Emirate were grateful to the President for signing a bill to establish a Federal Polytechnic in Daura, after they had complained that the area needed a tertiary institution to encourage the youth to pursue higher education.

RHAPSODY OF REALITIES

WEDNESDAY, 14TH AUGUST

THERE’S TREASURE IN YOU

But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us (2 Corinthians 4:7).

The verse above was written to Christians; so, it’s talking about you; there’s a treasure in you. You carry the divine essence; you’re not ordinary. Acknowledge this, for the Bible says, the communication of your faith is effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing that’s in you in Christ Jesus (Philemon 1:6).

Acknowledge that you’re a bearer of the divine order; a carrier of God’s divine presence. Therefore, the excellence of His power permeates through you, causing everything you do to prosper. Glory to God!

The Bible says the mystery of Christianity and the glory thereof is Christ in you (Colossians 1:27). Your life isn’t empty; there’s a treasure in you; a treasure of power, love, light, and divine perfection. Your body may be an earthen vessel, but the glory of God is in your spirit, and that glory inundates and perfects your physical body.

Always affirm that through you, the light of God, His glory, power and grace are revealed to your world. Make such proclamations often, because the effectiveness of the Word in your life depends on your response to the Word of God.

Concerning what we read in our opening verse, your response should be, “Yes, I’m a God-carrying vessel; I’m a package of divine blessings and treasures.” Hallelujah!

CONFESSION

Christ is in me; His perfection is in my spirit. The life and glory of God are manifested in, and through me. I acknowledge the treasures in my spirit and bring them to the fore with my confessions of faith. In all that I do, I exude excellence, perfection and virtue. I’m full of love; I saturate and affect my world with the Lord’s goodness, kindness, beauty, and grace. Hallelujah.

KINDLY SAY THESE WORDS OUT LOUD

Dear Father, Your Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path! It is the compass by which I navigate through life, driving me in the path of righteousness, success, and prosperity. My heart will forever trust in Your Word to do what it says, for not only is Your Word my best teacher, it also pilots me to the highest heights of success.

Thank You for the ministry of Your Word in my life. Your Word is like a burning fire shut up in my bones. I cannot hold it back; I’ll promote and publish it everywhere with fervency until it engulfs my world. I am a burning and a shining light and many are coming to bask in the brightness of my light, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Leave CBN alone — Moghalu slams Buhari’s directive on non-provision of foreign exchange for food importation

Kingsley Moughalu, a former deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has faulted President Buhari's directive on non-provision of foreign exchange for food importation.

Recall LIB reported that President Buhari while hosting APC Governors at his hometown in Daura, said his directive to the CBN to starve food importation of foreign exchange stemmed from the steady improvement in agricultural production and attainment of full food security.

However the former Presidential candidate of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) rubbished President Buhari's order and further pointed out that the CBN is an independent body which should be left alone to discharge its functions. Moughlau stated that the political interference in CBN's economic policies leads to poverty and also weakens institutions.

He tweeted;

Quote:“Is @cenbank now a ministry to be “directed” by President @MBuhari ? Article 1(3) of the CBN Act 2007 states ‘In order to facilitate the achievement of its mandate under this Act…the Bank shall be an independent body in the discharge of its functions.
“The issue here isn’t whether or not CBN should allow access to forex for food imports. It is about whether such an economic policy of a central bank should be imposed by a political authority. A major reason for our poverty, instability and weak economy is weak institutions.
“Our marketplace should be regulated and guided in a rational manner that creates a level playing field. Our economy will not be saved by Ad Hoc political decisions like this, handed down by the very institutions that should be shielded from the whim and caprice of politicians.
“Nigeria’s entire economy appears to have been sub-contracted to our central bank, including industrial and trade policy. In the process the economy has fared poorly and the Bank has lost its independence. This is sad!
“@NGRPresident should leave @cenbank alone to discharge its mandate independently within the ambit of the CBN Act, and stop “directing” it. @cenbank should on its part assertive its independence (assuming it actually believes it should be independent, but the Act says so, clearly!”

The Divisional Police Officer, Delta State command, who was allegedly kidnapped along Benin-Asaba Expressway on Friday between Onicha-Ugbo and Issele-Uku axis has regained his freedom.
A source at the state police command headquarters in Asaba told The PUNCHthat the victim was freed by his abductors after paying a ransom of N3 million.
The gunmen were said to have shot indiscriminately before whisking the victim away to an unknown destination.

The victim, whose name was given as Mr. Okoro is in charge of Galilee Police Station, Ute-Ogbeje community in Ika North East Local Government Area of the state.
He reportedly regained his freedom on Sunday after the negotiated ransom was dropped at a designated location for the abductors to pick.
The Commissioner of Police Delta State, Mr. Adeyinka Adeleke, however, denied the incident and the subsequent payment of ransom.

He said it was the DPO’s friend, who was kidnapped.
He added that he had been in touch with the DPO and that the police does not support the payment of ransom for kidnap victims.

Gay British man in hospital for two weeks with a painful erection that won’t go away after injecting unprescribed sex enhancer into his penis

A gay English man named Danny Polaris has gotten more than he bargained for after taking an unprescribed erection enhancing drug that he injected into his penis before having sex. Two weeks after he took the drug, his erection is yet to go away.

He was told that he may need to have his penis amputated and describes using the drug as “one of the worst decisions” of his life.

In a bid to get his erection under control, medics have pushed a 7 inch plastic nail down his urethra without anaesthetic to no avail. Polaris described this pain as a 10/10.

They also tried putting needles into his penis in a bid to stop the concentrated flow of blood to the area. So far, nothing has helped.

Trouble started when he met a nurse on night out and both men hooked up. Polaris said: “I met a nurse, who I went home with, who ended up injecting an erection enhancer into my c**k. I thought 'why not, what could possibly go wrong?"

He decided to make his story public in the hope to raise awareness and warn others of the dangers of taking unprescribed enhancers.

His friends have set up a GoFundMe to raise money for things to “make Danny more comfortable”.

Oluwafemi Labinjo: Family Demands Answers Over Death In US Boat Party (Photo)

The family of Oluwafemi Labinjo, who was found dead after a boat party in Lake Michigan, US is demanding answers into his sudden death.

Femi, 30, went missing while partying on a boat on July 27 with friends. His body was discovered in the water four days later (August 1).

The Nigerian was part of several persons who partied in the annual Chicago Scene Boat Party, a tradition where people link their vessels and party in an area known as the Playpen, Igbere TV reports.

According to Labinjo’s family, the deceased during the party left his friends, shoes, cellphone and other belongings and never returned.

Femi was supposed to pick up his daughter that night, but never showed up.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office said an autopsy on the corpse was inconclusive.

Mother of the deceased, Glenda Labinjo, told newsmen that the family needs to know what happened.

“Most things can be reconciled once you know the answers. We just need to know: What happened? What was the cause of death?” she said.

Femi’s father was said to have flown in from Nigeria following his death.

Head of the investigations division for the Coast guard Marine Safety Unit Chicago, Brian Hennessy, said they are unsure which boat Femi boarded before his death as three illegal charters were anchored at the Scene party.

Femi was raised in the US and was the youngest of three children who graduated from the University of Illinois in 2009.

Police Arrest Over 100 Armed Robbery Suspects On Mile 2-badagry Expressway (pix)
User Avatar Forum: News
Posted by: Edoman - 08-13-2019, 02:34 PM - No Replies

The Lagos State Police Command said that over 100 armed robbery suspects were arrested on Mile 2-Badagry Expressway between January and August, 2019.

Mr Mohammed Ali, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations), Lagos State Police Command, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Monday.

He spoke in reaction to public complaints about incessant armed robbery on the Mile 2-Badagry Expressway.

Ali said that the command’s security strategies in the state were still in place, yielding positive results.

According to him, at peak periods, all Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) are to monitor traffic situation under them, with a view to decongesting traffic and checking criminals operating during such period.

‘’Our major challenge on the Badagry expressway is the bad road and the articulated vehicles and tankers parked on the road from Mile 2. They are not helping security matter on that road.

‘’The tankers blocked the expressway. Heavy traffic is built up daily and that attracted robbers to operate.

‘’Yet our men are moving round to secure members of the public on that road.

‘’Our monitoring men are all in different parts of the metropolis,’’ he said.

According to him, we have officers sent out from morning till night for traffic control to compliment other traffic officials and monitor black spots on motorcycles, patrol vehicles and foots.

Ali also debunked the allegation that the police always looked other ways when some military personnel and their wards were involved in robbery on the Badagry expressway, particularly around Ojo area of the road.

Ali said: ‘’It is not possible for anyone to commit crime and the police will look the other way; no matter who you are, you will be arrested if you commit crime.

‘’No one is above the law, even if you are a uniform person. Over 100 robbers have been arrested on Badagry Expressway this year alone,’’ he said.

On rape cases in Lagos State, Ali said over 60 persons, including some men who slept with their daughters and got them pregnant were arrested and charged to court.

‘’We don’t waste time on rape cases. Once arrested, there is a special court in Ikeja where the suspects are arraigned immediately.

‘’Rape is a special offence that needs special attention,’’ he said.

Ali also noted that the police did not have to wait for 24 hours before commencing investigation in a case of a missing person, saying that such was not the practice of the command.

‘’The Commissioner of Police did not give such an instruction that the police should wait for 24 hours to start investigation whenever people report a case of a missing person.

‘’That is dangerous to the survival of the victim. We believe that within 24 hours, such a victim should be found.

‘’When any officer receives a report of a missing person, the first thing to do is to make a radio announcement to alert the entire command, so that if such person is kidnapped, the men on the road can look all areas, vehicles and not to wait for 24 hours.

‘’If anyone is found to do that in Lagos Command, such a person will be dealt with, because that is not our practice,’’ Ali said.

For the activities of “No Salary Boys”, Ali said more than 30 of them had been arrested in the last one week, saying that the police were arresting them daily and would continue to raid them.

The ‘’No Salary Boys’’ have been on rampage in the last two weeks in Igando area of the state going from house to house robbing people of their belongings and inflicting injuries on some residents.

Suicidal: How woman who threatened to kill self, two-year-old son was rescued in Anambra
[Image: Anambra.jpeg]
Residents of Awka in Anambra State Monday evening rescued a 27-year-old woman who dropped a suicide note threatening to kill herself, DAILY POST reports.
The woman, who goes by the name: Praise Eberechi Eze had posted on Facebook, saying she would kill herself and her two-year-old son.
A source said Praise has been in an abusive marriage and had thrice returned to her parents who sent her back, asking her to go back and make her marriage work.
Narrating her ordeal on her Facebook timeline, Eberechi wrote in April this year, “We live in a society where no one cares. You live in an abusive marriage, no one care. Society, friends and relatives.
“They tell you to pray and endure while the assault is on the increase. You pack home and they tell you to go back and make your family work. Verbal abuse increase, you are called bad wife, bastard, you smell awful, you feel you made a 2.1 in school, come and get money for clearance.

“When family fails you because you are married, you damn the consequence, take a life and serve the jail term.”
A source said the last paragraph of her post may have been meant her suspected ploy to murder her husband, but later opted to take her own life and that of her son.
On Monday morning, Eberechi reportedly dropped a suicide note which read, “Soon I will die, and in will take my little man along. I won’t leave him to the suffering of verbal abuse, we will go to a place where there is peace unlimited. When I die, don’t write an epistle for me. When I die, I should be buried in my father’s house to avoid havoc. When I die, don’t cry, cos all is well in life and death.”
DAILY POST learnt that she deleted the post minutes after, triggering fears that she may have gone away to harm herself, and refused to take calls from friends.
Facebook users who had earlier made screenshots of her post sent it out, asking for help for her, until late Monday night when DAILY POST learnt she was tracked to a primary health centre in Okpuno in Awka, where some residents who rescued her had taken her for treatment.
A Facebook user, Cynthia Raphaels, who first spread the post, stated in a subsequent post that she had been tracked down to the health centre, and had detailed two female volunteers to keep an eye on her.
As at the time of filing this report, DAILY POST was still scouting for the said lady, who some Anambra residents have promised to help rehabilitate.

The Chairman, National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, Dr Ibrahim Kana, has said the number of Nigerian pilgrims who have died while performing the 2019 Hajj in Saudi Arabia has risen to nine.

Kana disclosed this in Muna on Monday while briefing journalists on the activities of the medical team of NAHCON for the pilgrims.

Kana said, “The deceased, a Lagos State pilgrim, collapsed at Jamrat and was brought to hospital in Muna but died, she was hypertensive.”

Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria in Muna, Kana said the leader of the Lagos State team in Saudi for the Hajj, Alhaji AbdulLateef Abdulkarim, had identified the deceased as Alhaja Folashade Lawal.

He said the deceased hailed from Oshodi Local Government Area of the state, saying she slumped at 3am while heading for Jamrat to throw stones at the devil.

Throwing stones at the ‘devil’ is one of the Islamic rites towards an acceptable Hajj.

Kana said NAHCON opened 21 field offices in Muna with adequate drugs and ambulances.

A NAN correspondent, who visited the Nigerian camp in Muna, reported that many pilgrims, mostly women, were seen buying women’s wear and other gift items they claimed were meant for their families and friends at home.

The pilgrims, who will spend three days to accomplish religious rites in Muna, are expected to move to the Grand Mosque, Makkah on Tuesday to complete the remaining rites to ensure an acceptable hajj.

Wadume: Meet The Taraba Kidnap Kingpin (Photo)
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion
Posted by: Edoman - 08-13-2019, 12:33 PM - No Replies

THE suspected Taraba kidnap kingpin is a petty fish trader, painter, politician, polygamist with many children and a philanthropist. His wealth status might have been exergerated because of his generosity and profligate spending.

He was reclusive until the last two years. His wealth, allegedly through kidnapping shot him into ‘prominence’.

He is at the centre of a disagreement between the Army and the Police following soldiers killing of three policemen and a civilian who were on an anti-kidnapping mission in Taraba State.

The incident is under probe following public outcry.

Who is he? His name is Hamisu Bala. His nickname is “Why Do You Mean?”, which many mistake for “Wadume.” He is a Hausa man whose great grand father migrated from Katsina state.

He was born and brought up in Ibi local government area of Taraba State. His late father, Bala, was Hausa, while his mother was Tiv, from Ukum local government area of Benue state.

He holds a secondary school certificate, having attended the Government Secondary School (GSS) Ibi. It was gathered that he was “not a brilliant” Arts student.

“He completed secondary school in 2004 and did not proceed to any tertiary institution,” one of his classmates told The Nation.

Bala, 35, suddenly became so rich that many believe he made it through ‘ritual’. His posh residence in Ibi was built only last year. Before then, he was a petty trader who specialised in buying and selling fish in Ibi.

“He was not even a big trader; he could only afford to buy only one or most of the time, half a basket of fish to sell at retail prices,” a source, who knows him well, said.

Bala was a painter who had partnership with his brother.

During the 2019 polls, he aspired to become a House of Assembly member, representing Ibi Constituency, on the platform of the Young Democratic Party (YDP). But, he did not make it.

After making money Bala has been living the life of a philanthropist.

In the last two years, he reportedly built houses for his friends and donated hundreds of motorcycles and cars to young men and women. He is also believed to be generous to security agents.

“Sometimes he (alleged kidnapper) goes to tea sellers and settles the bills of tea drinkers. Then, he gives N10,000 each to the people,” a source in Ibi said.

Two of his wives have been under house arrest. His other two wives are in Mecca on pilgrimage, it was learnt.

So, how did police know Bala was a big time kidnapper to the extent of apprehending him? One of Bala’s accomplices, known as Kwarba, was apprehended by the police in Jalingo, over his alleged involvement in the kidnapping of a Permanent Secretary.

During interrogation, Kwarba revealed that Bala was their leader. The police then allowed Kwarba to be communicating with Bala on the phone for over three days, as though he was not in detention. Based on their communication, the police were able to gather useful information.

It was during one of their conversations on the phone that Bala disclosed that he was coming to Ibi for Eid el Kabir celebration. On arrival in Ibi, Bala phoned Kwarba to inform him.

Operatives of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) embarked on the journey. They got to the police headquarters in Jalingo, before proceeding to Ibi, in a white Toyota Hummer Bus marked, LAGOS: MUS-564EU.

They were in mufti, and carried Kwarba along so that he could identify Bala. They met Bala at a coffee joint, at the junction to Government Lodge. Kwarba identified him.

To pull the wool over the kidnapper’s eyes, the policemen in disguise went out and told him they brought a bus for sale. Bala sought to know the cost of the vehicle so that he could buy it, but the policemen suggested they would step aside for bargaining.

It was when he (Bala) got into the bus that the policemen told him they were there to arrest him, after handcuffing and chaining his legs.

After arresting the suspect, the operatives drove into Ibi town briefly and began to drive carefully out of the town.

But while passing the coffee joint, (where Bala was picked) the suspected kidnapper forced his head out of the vehicle and shouted: “I have been kidnapped by these people.”

Soon, the news spread and some of Bala’s ‘boys’ began to chase the vehicle on motorbikes. The operatives had passed the first and second check points, with only one remaining to pass.

Bala’s accomplices then called the military checkpoint where the bus was ambushed. They opened fire on the bus conveying the operatives and suspected kidnapper. The bus somersaulted into the bush, following the barrage of gun fire, as the driver lost control of the wheel.

A source revealed that, after the killing of the three policemen and the civilian, Bala, who was handcuffed and chained in the legs, crawled and took refuge in the home of an old Jukun woman.

The following day, he called his army captain friend who came with three of his ‘boys’ in a red Tyoyota Corolla.

Our source alleged that the army captain cut the chains on the suspected kidnapper.

“It was around 7:30 am that he (Bala) was taken back to his home in Ibi in the red car,” an eyewitness said.

On getting back to Ibi, his neighbours and Ibi residents went into jubilation. It was gathered that while the jubilation was on, Bala sneaked out of town. He has not been seen since then.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has said that the rehabilitation of the two Port Harcourt Refineries were still ongoing.
Group General Manager, Group Public Affair Division of the coporation, Mr. Ndu Ughamadu, disclosed this to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), in Abuja yesterday.
The first refinery in Port Harcourt was commissioned in 1965 to process 60,000 barrels of oil per stream day (bpsd), as well as the second plant commissioned in 1989, which has a capacity of 150,000 bpsd.

NAN reported that both refineries have a combined capacity of 210,000 barrels per stream day making it the biggest oil refining company in Nigeria.
Both had the last Turn Around Maintenance (TAM) in 2000.
Ughamadu said that the rehabilitation was part of government’s effort to get the refinery working, adding that the consultant and the contractors engaged by the NNPC were still on ground working.
“The rehabilitation effort in the Port Harcourt Refinery is still on and the contractors are there with the consultants and ENI is equally there.
“As we said earlier, we are funding the rehabilitation from internally generated revenue, because all our efforts to get external financiers did not work because their terms were not in terms with what we expected,’’ he said.
He said that the contractors were still working within the time frame and might conclude what they were doing before the given time frame.
“Our expectations are that after the rehabilitation of the Port Harcourt refinery, we will kick-start that of the other two refineries.
“We just want to use the Port Harcourt as an example,’’ he added.
NAN reported that in March 2017, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Italian oil giant, ENI and NNPC in Rome.
In the MoU, ENI was committed to the refurbishment of the Port Harcourt Refinery.
Also, in March 2019, the former Group Managing Director of NNPC, Dr Maikanti Baru led the federal government delegation to inaugurate the rehabilitation of Port Harcourt refineries.
He said that the rehabilitation would be in two phases, adding that both the ENI and the original builders would participate in the process.
According to him, it is part of government’s effort to achieve 90 per cent local refining capacity.

Expanding Financial Inclusion

Hamid Ayodeji writes on efforts by the Shared Agents Network Expansion Facility to enhance financial inclusion in the country

The linkage between financial inclusion and economic development of developing countries has provided the impetus for countries to develop and implement improved strategies to financially include their unbanked citizens, according to the latest financial inclusion report of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

Also, a study by the World Bank in 2017, revealed that there is a strong positive correlation between account penetration of various countries and their Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita.

For instance, high income countries with approximately 100 per cent of account penetration posted GDP per capital ranging from $25,000 above, while Sub-saharan African countries with less than 65 per cent account penetration in most cases recorded GDP per capita less than $10,000.
As part of commitment to further enhance the level of financial inclusion in Nigeria and by implication sustain inclusive economic growth, the Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria and Chairman of the National Financial Inclusion Steering Committee, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, had in his 5-year strategy (2019—2024) has defined a target of 95 per cent financial inclusion rate by 2024.

The new target according to the Governor, calls for institutions to re-strategise and refocus initiatives, policies and schemes that would accelerate the pace of delivery of their respective financial inclusion efforts.
Clearly, enhancing financial inclusion was one of the reasons why industry stakeholders established the Shared Agents Network Expansion Facility (SANEF).

SANEF, among other targets, intends to establish 500,000 agents across the country by 2020.
SANEF is a project powered by the CBN, banks, NIBSS, licenced mobile money operators and shared agents with the primary objective of accelerating financial inclusion in Nigeria.

The initiative also involves on-boarding 40 million low income and unserved Nigerians into the financial system and deepening access to mobile and digital financial products and services such as savings accounts, micro loans, insurance, pensions by Nigerians.

The project seeks to deepen financial inclusion in Nigeria through an integrated ecosystem with strong regulatory oversight, consumer protection and interoperable payment systems with limited concentration risk.
The Chief Executive Officer, SANEF, Ronke Kuye, recently reiterated the commitment of the body towards meeting the target.
Kuye, who said this during a financial inclusion stakeholders’ forum in Lagos recently, pointed out that the organisation was on track to achieving the target that was given to it by the Central Bank of Nigeria, as it currently has 156,000 agents.
According to her, the company would be working together with the super agents as well as the agents to drive and ensure financial inclusion in the country.

Kuye explained, “Banks are not usually sited in rural areas so it is important for us to have financial representatives in form of agents in all the areas banks cannot have their branches in order to achieve the financial inclusion rate of 80 percent by 2020.

“In addition to all of these efforts towards driving financial inclusion, we ensure there are training programmes for the agents, financial literacy and campaign awareness, technology platform that would enable everyone that wants to open an account with any agent bank outlet.
“Where ever the SANEF sign is, it is safe for customers to go there to open an account, do BVN enrolment, transfers, cash in and cash out transactions. We are collaborating with the Bank of Industry and other stakeholders to ensure that there are products for the agents to offer to the public; such as micro pension, micro insurance and micro credit.”
Furthermore, Kuye said SANEF was working on improving the standard of technology in the industry.
“For example, the new account we are launching soon would have the same standard as any other account.
“Also the applications can be used to use various products such as, cash in cash out. We are going to make arrangements for basic products,” he added.

Also Speaking at the event, the Head, Financial Inclusion Secretariat, CBN, Joseph Attah, who was represented by the Assistant Director Finance Development, Central Bank of Nigeria, Dr Paul Oluikpe, said, “To spur all stakeholders to action and engineer a measurable path towards achievement, the financial inclusion Secretariat has outlined a number of workable assumptions around SANEF’s target of 500,000 agents by 2020.

“Considering the fact that SANEF currently has over 100,000 agents in 2019; if each of these agents signs on 6.9 accounts per month, that would translate to 83 accounts per year and then cumulating to 8.3 million accounts by the end of 2019, thus precisely fulfilling our 2019 target of including 8.3 million people for this year.

Agent Banking

Agent banking has been identified as one of the key influencers to drive mass markets to formal financial services as they enable customers to cash in, cash out, make payments or conduct other financial transactions without necessarily having to go through the traditional brick and mortar channels.

The success of agent banking, according to a report by EFInA, is dependent on many factors, but significant among them is agent management.
A well-managed agent network can help providers build brand awareness, educate customers, and meet system-wide liquidity demands, all of which build confidence among users in a service that has low awareness.
On the other hand, a poorly managed agent network, by contrast, is characterised by widespread low quality customer experiences, which in turn erodes trust and drives away business.

Even before the National Financial Inclusion Strategy (NFIS) was launched in 2012, where agent banking was identified as one of its drivers, the Central Bank of Nigeria led in promoting an effective system for the settlement of transactions, a key driver for financial inclusion in Nigeria. In addition, after the NFIS launch, there have been other activities that have continued to shape the Nigerian Agent banking space.
To the Chief Executive Officer, EFInA, Esaie Dier, while speaking at the stakeholders’ forum, noted that, “As an agent in this sector, in order for you to generate revenue you need to understand the customers, the business and how best to communicate with them. “Thus we are providing data for the agents to build their strategy around the number of people that are financially excluded, also their locations. In addition, we provide technical assistance.
“For instance, if someone has a good idea that can generate about ten million into the banking system, we would come up with a strategy to support such idea as we provide financial support.

“This year, we gave out $2 million to six Nigerians to develop business ideas. Basically we help create awareness, data and grants that help develop businesses.
“We have been working with regulators to address some of the challenges out there and come up with efficient policies and regulations that help drive businesses and ideas.”

Speaking on measures put in place by the CBN to protect the agents against harassment, an official of the Consumer Protection Department, CBN, Damola Ayanda, said: “The financial institution that the agent works with has the responsibility to ensure that all the right tools are in place for the products and services that you render.”
Ayanda, while speaking on point of sale dispensing errors which had been identified as a challenge in the industry, said the central bank was working on a solution whereby when a customer comes to the agents with such complaints, it would be resolved effectively.

Some agents at the forum noted that technology has been used to save cost, drive capacity and enhance services with the aggressive drive for financial inclusion.
Ayanda stressed the need for capacity building for agents, to enable them understand the regulatory framework that guides the channels used to deliver services and products.

“For every financial instrument or channel that is used in Nigeria there is a regulatory framework. The agents need to understand the framework guiding that channel in order to resolve issues quickly and effectively using the framework.
“If you know the guidelines of the POS transactions you will not have issues concerning POS dispensing errors.  Another thing is that before financial institutions register an individual as an agent they need to look into it that the person is licenced and capable of doing the work.

“There are currently a lot of people becoming agents which has led to a lot of cash in cash out agent banking boots,” he added.
On his part, the Head of Agent Banking, Access Bank, Michael Ogba, pointed out that there are about 99 million adult Nigerians, and less than 20,000 ATMs and less than 500,000 PoS in the country.

“Also banks are no longer building bank branches; neither are they buying more ATM machines. Our research shows that the highest numbers of PoS terminals that are being bought in the last one year are going to mobile money operators, which tells us that, the agent banking business is a good one, it is not going to reduce, rather it would increase. “Nigeria is still under banked which means there is still a large amount of customer base to be tapped into,” he explained.

The   market capitalisation shed N157.7 billion to close at 13.3 trillion.  Year-to-date, the market has declined by 13.1 per cent. Although the market performance is seen as a negative development, it has depressed prices of stocks to a comfortable entry level.

The market had opened on Monday on a positive note as gains in Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc, Cement Company of Northern Nigeria Plc and MTN Nigeria Communications Plc lifted the NSE ASI by 0.10 per cent.

However, the market turned negative on Tuesday, as it shed 0.5 per cent. The bearish trend was sustained on Wednesday with a decline of 0.4 per cent.  There was a little respite on Thursday as the market inched up marginally by 0.05 per cent. But the bears returned on Friday, dragging the index by 0.40 per cent, leading to a fall of 1.17 per cent for the week.

In terms of sectoral performance, the NSE Banking Index led the losers with  6.1 per cent  on the back of sell pressures in Unity Bank Plc (-13.5 per cent ), FBN Holdings Plc(-11.6 per cent) and Zenith Bank Plc (-10.7 per cent).

Banking stocks remained under pressure despite the improved results already released by some of the banks. Unity Bank Plc, which shed 13.5 per cent last week, had reported a 96 per cent jump in profit for the half year to June 30, 2019. Also, FBN Holdings Plc that went down 11.6 per cent, ended the H1 2019 with improved profitability and decline in non-performance loans(NPL).

The Group Managing Director of FBN Holdings Plc, Mr. UK Eke recently said the company was committed to delivery sustainable long-term performance following continuous improvement in the NPL.
FBN Holdings NPL ratio has dropped to 14.5 per cent  from 25.3 per cent  as of March 2019 and 25.9 per cent  at the end of 2018 financial year.

“Despite the difficult operating environment, we remain resolute in delivering on our guidance across key metrics including our commitment towards a single digit NPL ratio by the end of year, as evidenced by the reduction in NPLs from the last quarter. Essentially, Atlantic Energy – our largest NPL, was written off, translating to a decline in the NPL ratio from 25.9 per cent in December 2018 to 14.5 per cent as at June 2019, a step that brings us closer to our FY 2019 target and creates more headroom for quality asset growth.

“This is paving the way for sustained improvement in asset quality and a further reduction in impairment charges that will allow us to take advantage of enhanced earnings opportunities when they arise. “Furthermore, we have remained focused on deepening our transaction-led income and are uniquely positioning for stronger revenue growth and value creation,” Eke said.
Also speaking, the Chief Executive Officer, First Bank and Subsidiaries, Dr. Adesola Adeduntan, said: “In line with our commitment to address the legacy asset quality challenges, exposure to Atlantic Energy was written off in the quarter.

“This is a material progress in our legacy NPL resolutions and clearly reflects our resolve towards achieving a single digit NPL ratio by year end. In addition, this step creates significant headroom for increased business opportunities and enhanced earnings especially in the oil & gas sector of the economy.”

The NSE Insurance Index shed 3.9 per cent, while the NSE Oil & Gas Index and NSE Consumer Goods Index went down by 1.6 per cent and 0.6 per cent in that order.

The Retail Secondary Market Intervention Sales (SMIS) received a boost of $280.04 million from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on Friday. The banking sector regulator also injected the sum of CNY 28.3million in the spot and short tenored forwards segment of the inter-bank foreign market.

The latest interventions in the inter-bank foreign exchange market, which were announced by the Director, Corporate Communications Department, CBN, Mr. Isaac Okorafor, were for requests in the agricultural and raw materials sectors as well as Renminbi-denominated Letters of Credit. Okorafor further expressed satisfaction over the stability of the foreign exchange which according to him, was largely due to sustained intervention by the Bank.

He reiterated assurances that the Bank’s management would remain committed to ensuring that all the sectors of the forex market continue to enjoy access to the needed foreign exchange.

The CBN had last Tuesday offered authorised dealers in the wholesale segment of the market the sum of $100 million, while the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and the invisibles segments each received the sum of $55 million.

Stories by Chineme Okafor in Abuja
Members of the Nigerian Senate have declared their support for the proposal to recapitalise the 11 electricity distribution companies (Discos).

They also advised that the 40 per cent shares held by the federal government in the Discos be divested from and sold to investors with technical competence.

A statement from the Ministry of Power quoted the parliamentarians to have disclosed this, stating that it would be more beneficial to Nigeria and the power sector.

It disclosed that the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, made this known when he received a management team of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) which was led to his office by its Managing Director, Mr. Usman Mohammed.
Lawan, during the visit, also stated that it was not in the interest of the government to continually disburse bailout funds to the power Discos without commensurate improvement in electricity supply.

He said experts in the field should be given an opportunity to invest in the sector and assured that the Senate would continue to support the TCN in its execution of the Transmission Rehabilitation and Expansion Programme (TREP) which is planned to rehabilitate, stabilise and provide the necessary flexibility in the country’s transmission grid.

Despite his assurance of support for TCN’s TREP, Lawan, however expressed displeasure with the report on its contracting for a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) which had reportedly happened three times unsuccessfully in the past.
He thus called for a more stringent process of awarding contracts that would allow only competent firms qualified to execute the project.

Similarly, the Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege, said he was impressed with the presentation of the TCN team, and expressed confidence in their capacity to solve the country’s power supply challenges.

In the same vein, the Senate Majority Leader, Yahaya Abdullahi, said reducing government’s bureaucracy in the power sector operations was key to getting past its challenges. He cited the difficulty in securing the supply of gas to thermal power generation companies (Gencos) as a major setback to power generation in the country.

Abdulahi, agreed with the position of Lawan, on the sale of the 40 per cent holding of the government in the Discos to experts, and suggested that the Senate could re-open the power privatisation exercise carried out in 2013 and involve big foreign investors to allow for proper restructuring of the sector.

Mohammed, had earlier presented a report on the operations of the TCN in the last two and half years to the leadership of the Senate, and explained that stabilising the country’s transmission system frequency, executing the TREP, securing $1.57 billion from multi-lateral financing agencies for execution of specific transmission projects nationwide, and evacuation of 755 containers containing power equipment from the ports as well as initiated the procurement of a functional SCADA and spinning reserve, were parts of the successes of his team within the period.

The immediate past Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, recently said the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has enormous regulatory powers to make the country’s electricity reforms work.
Fashola had said this while answering questions at the recent ministerial screening exercise. He had stated that the NERC needed to be supported by stakeholders to exercise its powers to sanction erring operators who refuse to serve consumers efficiently in the sector.
He had noted that issues of consumer complaints and regulations should be directed to the regulatory agency for effective administration and compliance, stating that sections of the country’s Electric Power Sector Reform Act (EPSRA) 2005, vested enormous power on NERC.
“Let me speak to two powers that the regulator has in Sections 73, 74 and 75 of the electric power sector (EPSRA). One of the powers that was vested in that law by the regulator is to undertake an investigation and do several things.
“It could mean demanding the license of the licensee or even cancelling the license as we have seen in cases like the Central Bank of Nigeria, and as we have seen in some cases in Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) and Nigeria Broadcasting Commission.

“So, the powers of the regulator for making the reform work must be targeted towards ensuring minimum service levels, licensing conditions are met and until we fully exhaust those powers, it will be premature to say that the reform is not working,” Fashola had said.

The Managing Director of Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCo), Mr. Bayo Ojulari, has disclosed that by 2025, the global oil industry’s share of global digitalisation will be over $1 trillion.
Ojulari, stated this in a presentation, ‘Digital Transformation and Emerging Trends in Artificial Intelligence: Implications for the Energy Sector and Future Outlook by 2025’ which he made at the just concluded 2019 edition of the Society for Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Nigeria Annual International Conference and Exhibition (NAICE).

He explained that by then, such tasks as predictive maintenance, remote monitoring and operations, frontline worker mobility, omnichannel retail, consumer energy choices, and digital customer services amongst others, would be executed through digitalisation which would be powered by artificial intelligence (AI) or Machine Learning (MI).

He noted that with digitalisation, companies in the oil industry could benefit from increased business value growth rate, safer operations, improved governance processes, improved operational efficiency, predictability of business operations and financial outlook, as well as integrated and insightful decision-making processes.

According to Ojulari, market analysts have identified digital technologies as a significant safety and environment value contributor, and could with advanced analytics and process optimisation, result to three per cent reduction in accidents and injuries, 350 million tonnes reduction in carbon emissions, 65,000 barrels reduction in pipeline spills, as well as 800 million gallons reduction in water consumption.

Similarly, he noted that digitalisation has resulted in AI Seismic interpretation and well location, automation drilling and robotic inspections and leak detection systems.

He noted that while Nigeria was placed in the ‘break-out’ end of the 2017 digital evolution index map, it could leverage its benefits for its oil industry by ensuring that government, operators and service providers become early adopters of digital systems of operation, consider new business models, cultivate a clear corporate digital strategy beyond proof of concepts, promote culture of innovation and change, as well as engage and collaborate with others in the industry.
According to him, the country and industry would also need to, “keep an eye on data protection and privacy, assurance and certification of data quality, update legislation to support digital Nigeria, and incentivise investment in digital technologies.”
Ojulari, equally called for the promotion of collaboration in the industry through policies, and investment in human capital development.

“Digital and coding should be normal to people, make digital leadership and digital dexterity in people a high priority, reskilling or retraining workforce for the transformation journey,” he added in his presentation.

....Toyota Land Cruiser purchased at N26m sold for N1m

....Office equipment worth over N10m sold for N360,000

Quote:By Chukwu David

Stunning revelations have been made on how sharp practices allegedly characterised sales of National Assembly property during the transition from the Eighth Assembly to the recently inaugurated Ninth Assembly.

It was also alleged that scandals greeted the handling of the contract for the repainting of offices of members of the Ninth National Assembly, as the process reportedly lacked transparency and accountability.

New Telegraph ’s investigations on sales of most of the property of the National Assembly used by members of the Eighth Assembly revealed that the authorities of the apex legislative institution connived with members of the expired Assembly to sell the items at scandalously give-away prices.

Some of the items sold to members of the Eighth Senate and the House of Representatives at very ridiculous amounts included Toyota Land Cruiser, office computers, photocopiers and refrigerators, among others.

It was learnt that the National Assembly management gave out the Toyota Land Cruiser, a Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV), which was purchased between N24 million and N26 million each, to the senators and reps of the last Assembly for a paltry sum of N1 million.

It was also learnt that the NASS management collected the sum of N360,000 only from the lawmakers for two television sets, photocopier, desktop computers and a big refrigerator put together.

This happened at the tail end of the last Assembly when the management was taking stock of what they supplied to the lawmakers for their use in the dispensation spanning June 9, 2015 to June 11, 2019, in order to supply members of the current Assembly with basic working facilities.

It was, however, learnt that all the items, which were given out almost free to the legislators of the last Assembly, would be purchased afresh and supplied to members of the Ninth Assembly, which was inaugurated on June 11, 2019.

A National Assembly source, told our correspondent on the condition of anonymity, that the Toyota SUV, which was given out for N1 million only, was purchased at the contract sum of between N24 million and N26 million when it was supplied to the lawmakers in 2015.

The source also hinted that the contract price of each television set at the National Assembly was N2 million when the item was supplied to senators and members of the House of Representatives in the last Assembly.

This means that the cost of the two television sets mounted in each office of the lawmakers (one set in the politician’s office and one in the visitors’ waiting room) cost N4 million.

Surprisingly, the National Assembly Management asked the lawmakers to pay just N360,000 for both the television sets, musical system and other electronic gadgets installed in their offices.

It was learnt that the management wanted to sell the whole items for N540,000, but the lawmakers negotiated the price down and insisted that they would only pay N360,000.

When New Telegraph tried to find out the reason for the decision of the apex legislative Assembly bureaucracy to sell off the official cars of the last assemblymen and other facilities at the said amounts, those who volunteered to speak off record said that it had been the practice over the years.

It was further learnt that the monies for the items would be deducted directly from the severance package of the lawmakers whenever the Assembly management would pay them.

“This practice of selling properties used by previous Assembly at give-away prices did not start today; that is how they used to do it, but the only difference is that the amounts collected from members of the Eighth Assembly on those items appear to be the lowest and it is not helping our economy at all.

“Come to think of it, a Prado Jeep (SUV), which was supplied by contractors at the rate of between N24 million and N26 million was given out at N1 million only. It’s almost like dashing them the car.

“The most painful thing when you look at the matter very critically, is that the management is going to supply brand new vehicles to the lawmakers in the present Assembly and it’s going to be very expensive. Where will they get the money to do that, is it not from public fund?
“They should have collected more money from those outgone legislators and then make up the money to buy for those in the present Assembly.

This is why the National Assembly budget will continue to go up because there is no prudent management.

“Again, look at the issue of the office equipment such as television sets, sound system, photocopier, computer sets and other facilities in their office, the management of the National Assembly gave it out at a paltry sum of N360,000.

It was actually like giving those items out for free,” a source said.

Another area where sharp practices and non-transparent process were reported to have occurred in the National Assembly was in the contract awarded for the repainting of the offices of members of the Ninth Assembly.

New Telegraph learnt that the contract was taken over by some management staff of the National Assembly, who would never make their involvement in the contract known, to avoid attracting public criticism and, perhaps, facing the wrath of the law.

A source close to the National Assembly management told our correspondent that the contract for repainting the offices of the House of Representatives was being handled by one of the top management staff of the Assembly while that of the Senate was being handled by another top management official of the bureaucracy.

The source also revealed that despite the contract being awarded to different contractors for the repainting work, some of the lawmakers who were desperate to pack into their offices as soon as possible, brought painters from outside and paid them from their individual pockets to do the work.

According to the source, the senators who could not wait for the officially engaged contractors to do the work, paid as much as N250,000 to their privately engaged painters.

However, it was learnt that the price varied among individual contractors, as some lawmakers were said to have paid higher while others paid lower than N250,000.

Meanwhile, one of the National Assembly staff, who was in the know of the contract shenanigans, told our correspondent that the contractors who were awarded the repainting contract before the lawmakers impatiently brought outsiders to do the work, still came and received payment from the National Assembly management, notwithstanding that legislators paid from their pockets.

Efforts to get official reaction either from the Clerk to the National Assembly (CNA), Mohammed Sani-Omolori, or any of the top management staff, failed because none of them could be reached before filing this report.

Members of the National Assembly are currently on their annual recess, which will terminate on September 24, 2019, while the management and staff of the National Assembly are currently enjoying Sallah break, making it difficult to access relevant authorities for their comments on the alleged sales and contract scam.

» Kidnappers abduct Chief Imam’s son, two others in Ogun-Lagos border

Some suspected kidnappers have abducted one Abdulasis Sanni, the son of the Chief Imam of Ode Omi, a boundary community between Lagos and Ogun waterside.
Sanni, DAILY POST learnt, just returned from Saudi Arabia where he studied Arabic.

It was learnt that the assailants shot at two other sons of the Imam, as they stole a speedboat with which they escaped with their victims.
The gunmen were reported to have also abducted two brothers, Jelili and Bamidele Adams.
Jelili, a tailor, was reportedly sewing clothes for his customers for the Eid-el-Kabir celebration when the assailants struck.

Condemning the act, the Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, said his administration was considering death penalty for kidnappers in the state.
Abiodun disclosed this when some Islamic faithfuls paid him an Eid-el-Kabir visit in his Iperu country home.
He informed that the judiciary in Ogun State is working towards enacting a bill to that effect, even as he made case for community policing.

Abiodun added that the police were already on the trail of the kidnappers; assuring that the victims would be rescued unhurt.
