Extreme Poverty Looms , World Bank To FG Reform Now
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion
Posted by: Edoman - 12-03-2019, 07:43 AM - No Replies

The World Bank has said the number of Nigerians living in extreme poverty may increase by more than 30 million by 2030 and the country will be home to 25 per cent of the world ’ s destitute people if the government fails to revive economic growth and create jobs.

It warned that the country could slide back into recession if crude prices fell by 25 per cent to $50 a barrel .

The international oil benchmark, Brent crude , traded around $ 61 per barrel on Monday .
The bank gave the warning in its 2019 Nigeria Economic Update Report , which was released on Monday.

It said , “ Economic and demographic projections highlight the urgent need for reform .
“ With population growth (estimated at 2. 6 per cent) outpacing economic growth in a context of weak job creation , per capita income is falling . Today , an estimated 100 million Nigerians live on less than $1. 90 per day.

“ Close to 80 per cent of poor households are in northern Nigeria, while employment creation and income gains have been concentrated on central and southern Nigeria. ”

According to the report, Nigeria’s economy is expected to grow by 2. 1 per cent in 2020 and 2021, compared to an annual population growth rate of 2. 6 per cent .
It noted that Nigeria’ s economy was recovering gradually from the 2016 recession, with growth projected to pick up from 1. 9 per cent in 2018 to two per cent in 2019 .

The World Bank , however, warned that the projected growth outlook “ is vulnerable to external and domestic risks , including geopolitical and trade tensions that may affect inflows of private investment .”

“ Nigeria has the opportunity to advance reforms to mitigate these risks amid growing public demand for greater economic opportunities, ” it said .

The World Bank urged President Muhammadu Buhari to increase domestic revenue , remove trade restrictions and improve the predictability of economic policy .

It also advised the Nigerian government to remove expensive fuel subsidies and reduce lending to targeted sectors “ that crowd out banks .”
Failure to take actions would see more Nigerians falling into extreme poverty , the bank warned.

“ The cost of inaction is significant. Under a business -as- usual scenario, where Nigeria maintains the current pace of growth and employment levels , by 2030, the number of Nigerians living in extreme poverty could increase by more than 30 million , ” the bank said .

About 50 per cent of Nigeria’ s almost 200 million people live in poverty , according to the World Bank .
Last year , Nigeria overtook India as the country with the highest number of people in extreme poverty .

A report by the Brookings Institution said data from the World Poverty Clock showed that Nigeria had over 87 million people living in poverty.

The World Bank report, titled ‘ Jumpstarting Inclusive Growth: Unlocking the Productive Potential of Nigeria’ s People and Resource Endowments ’, showed that Nigeria created about 450, 000 new ( net) jobs in 2018 , partially offsetting the loss of 700 ,000 jobs in the previous year.

“ Nigeria’ s labour force is growing rapidly , and in 2018 , over five million Nigerians entered the labour market , resulting in 4. 9 million more unemployed people in the last year, ” it said .

The report stated that “ positive news are emerging from some states that are creating enough jobs to keep up with the growth of their labour forces . ”

17 people buried alive in their sleep after heavy rain caused a 20ft high wall to collapse

At least 17 people including two young children were buried alive in their sleep as a 20ft high wall collapsed on their homes amid heavy rains in India.

Police said the wall came down around 5.30am in a village 30 miles north of the city of Coimbatore, in southern India, crushing four houses. The dead include two seven-year-old children, two teenagers, and their older relatives. Fire crews using excavators are still searching the rubble for more victims.

Authorities have announced compensation of 4,000 rupees (£40) for the surviving relatives of the victims for each family member they lost.   The wall collapsed amid heavy rains that have been lashing Tamil Nadu state since Saturday and have already claimed five lives, the Hindustan Times reported.

Building collapses are tragically common in India during wet periods with rickety and poorly maintained structures buckling under the weight of continuous rain.  In July a collapsing wall killed 30 people in Mumbai.

Forecasters say Tamil Nadu state is due to receive more heavy rain over the next 24 hours, with warnings out across all six of the state's districts.

Schools have been closed amid the downpour, while officials have warned that reservoirs and rivers are at their maximum level. Tamil Nadu state, and especially the city of Chennai, were hit by major droughts this summer that saw water shipped in from surrounding areas to meet supply.

Buhari reacts to ex-Defence Chief's comment of Nigeria being restructured violently

The Presidency has reacted to a comment of Nigeria being restructured violently, credited to the former Chief of Defence Staff retired Gen. Alexander Ogomudia.

The former Chief of Defence Staff who delivered the keynote address at the Good Governance Lecture organised by the Catholic Church of Warri’s Justice Development and Peace Commission (JDPC) stated that recent negative developments in the country has led to speculation of the country being overdue for restructuring and in urgent need of a new way of governance.

Ogomudia also expressed fear for the future of the country and the present security situation in the country as he recalled how "a former Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshall Alex Badeh, was killed in the streets like an urchin and nothing happened".

In a statement released by President Buhari's media aide Garba Shehu, the presidency described Ogomudia's comment as a vituperation which speaks volumes about the mindset of groups of citizens who have yet to accept democracy as a form of government.

The Presidency insisted that democracy and not violence is the only known constitutional means of bringing any type of change in the polity.

Quote:”It is very important to stress that we as a nation, are a constitutional democracy and changes to the country in structure, its systems, policy and politics must abide by the norms of democracy, otherwise they would be extrajudicial and therefore unconstitutional.
”This system has subsisted, uninterrupted, for upward of 20 years and still going, and the country’s law courts, with its armed forces are primed at all times to defend it using all means that are lawful.
”The biggest challenge to the country today is not necessarily from perceived regional or state imbalances or conflicts between the government at the centre and states but from the mindsets and entities rooted in the idea of violence as a means to change.
”Such individuals, groups and entities peddling ideologies of violence and hate are closed to the notion of healthy dialogue through popular platforms including elected parliaments, hence only open to violence and destruction as their means.”
He said: ”This administration under President Muhammadu Buhari is strongly of the view that democracy that is self-correcting under the laws as we have is the answer to growing calls for violence and a means to change in the structure, form and content of the union that binds us as one country.”

Garba Shehu also denied claims of the nothing being done to address the murder of retired Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh, a former Chief of Defence Staff.

Quote:”Equally important is to deny the General’s assertion that nothing had been done on the unfortunate gruesome murder of Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh, a former Chief of Defence Staff.
”Truth is, the investigation instituted by General Olonisakin, the current Chief of Defence Staff, has led to the arrest of 14 suspects based on their alleged involvement in a report that has been sent to the police and the Nigeria Air Force for further action,” he added.

Obey Nigerian courts the way you obey British courts - Femi Falana tells FG

Human rights activist, Femi Falana has urged the Nigerian government to obey court orders the way it obeys those issued by courts in foreign countries.

The Senior Advocate of Nigeria's took a swipe at the Federal Government after the Attorney General Abubakar Malami confirmed on Thursday November 28, that a $200 million bond which was approved by President Buhari was deposited in line with a stay of execution order for a $9.6 billion dollar judgement awarded by a British Court against Nigeria in favour of Process & Industrial Development (P&ID) limited.

Femi Falana who stated that the Buhari-led administration did not give any pre-condition before obeying the court of its “former colonial master” as it does at home, asked that the order for the release of #RevolutionNow convener, Omoyele Sowore be obeyed in same way.

Sowore's counsel who threatened to report the AGF and the prosecutor to the Nigeria Bar Association and the legal practitioners privileges committee for encouraging the State Security Service to treat orders of Nigerian courts with disdain while obeying the orders of British courts, added that he will pursue the contempt proceedings which have been initiated against the director-general of the DSS, Mr. Yusuf Bichi if the AGF fails to obey the Nigerian court order.

Confirming the attack, President Roch Marc Christian Kabore said that he condemned "the barbaric attack" in the town of Hantoukoura. He said 14 people were killed and several people were also wounded.

A Durban High court has sentenced South Afriacan police officer, Austin Reynold, to 30 years imprisonment for killing a Nigerian man, Ebuka Okoli.

Reynold was last week Friday November 29th, found guilty of killing Ebuka, an indigene of Anambra state, during an illegal raid in Durban, a coastal city in Kwa Zulu-Natal province in South Africa in January last year.

Reynold and another accomplice had stormed Ebuka's neighborhood for an illegal raid. He accosted Ebuka and asked him to give him money. Ebuka's refusal led to Reynold opening fire at close range on Ebuka who died instantly.

24-year-old Reynold was arraigned by the South African government after his accomplice during the illegal raid, testified against him in court.

Reacting to the sentencing, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), said it is a welcomed development.

Quote:“We are glad that justice has been done. We had always stated that there have to be consequences for actions. We are glad that this case finally came to an end and South Africa has demonstrated the political will to deal with xenophobia.” she said

I have no regret siting N18bn transport university in Buhari's village, Daura - Amaechi

The Minister for Transportation Rotimi Amaechi has stated that he has no regret siting the $50 million (N18bn) Transport University in President Buhari's village, Daura in Katsina state.

Amaechi who spoke at the groundbreaking ceremony of the university which will be built on 413 hectares donated by the Katsina state government on Monday December 2, stated that Daura deserves the project because it is in Nigeria.

Quote:”When we sited the factory at Kajola, there was no noise, nobody debated about it, nobody abused us for it unlike the site for the University.

”Daura is in Nigeria, it is not in any other part of the world. It is not in Niger Republic, Biafra or Mali, it is in Nigeria. So, what is wrong in siting the University of transportation in Daura?
”I have no regret siting this university where I have sited it, it is not because I want to get any gain,” Amaechi said.
”It is my attempt at responding to the question of how to maintain and manage all the infrastructure we are building and realised that education is key.
”I engaged the companies, the first engagement was when they were constructing Lagos-Ibadan. They were not so keen at spending their funds to build a university for Nigeria until I refused to sign the contract for the Lagos to Ibadan railway.
”I insisted that I will only sign if three things were done. The first thing is to take our children to China and train them by giving them first degree in railway technology.
”Today as I speak, 60 of our children are in their second year and we thank CCECC and 90 are on their way to China this week, making it 150. The second is that, if we must sign the purchase of locomotives in China, they must build a factory were we can construct coaches, locomotives and wagon and today at Kajola that factory is being constructed.
”Finally, I insisted on the University of Transportation and today we are here for the ground breaking of the University and for all we are grateful to CCECC and the Chinese government.”

Lady disfigures her friend after dispute over N950

A lady identified as Onyinyechi Abaruo is reportedly on the run after disfiguring her friend, Chikaodi Umeh over N950.

The incident reportedly occurred after they had a heated exchange over the money. Their fight centered on Chikaodi's decision to keep back a N950 change from N2,000 a male friend gave to her for drinks with her friends.

Social media user, Eva who shared the story wrote;

Quote:“On Friday, 28th November 2019, one miss Chikaodi Umeh — who is a friend to Onyinyechi Abaruo — went out drinking with their mutual friend, Nene.

Onyinyechi later went to join them, but as she was arriving, Chikaodi’s male friend who was hosting them, was about to leave and Chikaodi pleaded with him to give her some money to enable her buy more drinks for Onyinyechi who just came in. The guy then gave Chikaodi the sum of N2000 and left.

And Chikaodi went ahead to buy 5 bottles of beer which amounted to N1,050 and was left with N950 which she decided to keep. But that got Onyinyichi angry and questioned why Chikaodi would keep the money to herself. This resulted in a dispute and later a fight between them.

After the fight, Chikaodi left but forgot her body lotion on the table. She later called their other friend, Nene — who invited Onyinyechi in the first place — to please help her bring the lotion to kano street, uzoakoli road, umuahia.

However, while waiting for Nene to arrive, Onyinyechi stormed the place in a tricycle and told her: “this your fine face, I will disfigure it for you.” Then she brought out a sharp object and attacked her, leaving in a pool of blood before fleeing in the tricycle."

Facebook user, Chibuike Oluchi also corroborated the claim and also confirmed that Onyinyechi is on the run after the incident. She wrote;

Quote:My heart bleeds
If a friend can do this to her fellow over a trivial matter then that person is nothing less than a devil, a beast in human form . So heartless
All I can say now is she needs justice
And our prayers for quick recovery
Pls anyone who knows the way about of Onyinyichi abaruo her picture I added here should pls help disclose her ways about for justice needs to be served
What a wicked act

Quote:The leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, has alleged that the police and army on Monday invaded the house of his lawyer, in Anambra State.

In a statement authored by himself and made available to our correspondent in Awka, the Anambra State, Kanu said three IPOB members were killed in the alleged onslaught.

He called on world bodies to intervene in the alleged intimidation of IPOB members in Nigeria

He wrote, “Confirmed reports indicate that a combined team of Nigeria police and military assassination squad invaded the home of my lawyer in Oraifite, Anambra State this morning Monday in a bid to kill him and his family.

“Sadly three innocent Biafrans were killed by this invading force at his residence.

“This comes on the heel of yet another killing of two IPOB family members who were peacefully gathering in Arondizuogu on Sunday December 1. Their bodies are still in the morgue.

“It is their responsibility to ensure this wanton brutality, lawlessness and anarchy are duly noted.”

Efforts to get a confirmation from the Police Public Relations Officer in the state  Haruna Mohammed, on the matter did not yield any results as of the time of filing this report as he did not reply to our correspondent’s calls or text message in the regard.

Nigeria Spends N60.37 billion on Fuel Subsidy in November

Nigeria Spends N60.37 billion on Fuel Subsidy in November
By

The federal government of Nigeria has spent a whooping N60.37 billion on subsidizing fuel in November 2019, increasing by over 2000% when compared with the amount spent on subsidy in the same period 2018.

According Punch, the Petroleum Product Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA), disclosed that the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) spent an average of N39.59 subsidizing every litre of petrol imported into the country in November. The NNPC currently the sole importer of petrol in the country reported that Nigeria consumes between 55 million and 60 million litres of petrol every day.

Going by a daily consumption of 55 million litres and an average of N36.59 spent on subsidy per litre, it will implies that the NNPC spent about N60.37bn on petrol subsidy during the 30 days of November. Figures obtained from the PPPRA showed that an average of N30.4, N30.79, N45.64 and N39.53 was spent on petrol subsidy on November 15, 18, 21 and 26 respectively.

Meanwhile, the differences between the Expected Open Market Price and the ex-depot cost for petrol collection gave rise to the actual amount spent as subsidy daily by the NNPC. The corporation subsidises petrol to ensure that it is not sold above N145 per litre at filling stations across the country.

The NNPC, classifies its subsidy spending as under-recovery, as it has repeatedly argued that only the National Assembly could approve subsidy. Under-recovery is the additional cost that the NNPC is incurring in subsidizing the price of petrol in order to ensure that it is sold at the regulated price, even when the real market price is above this regulated rate.

However, petrol subsidy by the state owned oil firm had been fluctuating over time, with the NNPC’s financial and operations report, reportedly showing that Nigeria spent N104.35 billion, N102.24 billion, N30.64 billion and N89.19 billion in January, February, March and April respectively this year.

According to Industry operators the fluctuation in the amount spent on subsidy can be attributed to volatility in global crude prices, which affected the cost of importing refined petroleum products.

‘Airlines’ indebtedness to NCAA over N10bn’
[Image: global-aviation-653x365.jpg]
December 01

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) says the agency has put in place measures to prevent the emergence of new debts from airlines.

According to NAN, Samuel Adurogboye, the general manager, public relations of NCAA, said airlines’ indebtedness to NCAA is more than N10 billion.

Adurogboye said old debts owed by airlines were defrayed a little by ensuring that the defaulters show evidence of payment before services are rendered.

The debts are said to have been accrued from five percent ticket and cargo sales charges collected by the airlines in trust for the regulators.

The ticket sales charges (TSC) is a charge collected for the agencies by the airlines in trust, to be remitted to government coffers.

“However, we have put up a system that prevents emergence of new debts via the automation, ” Adurogboye said.
“The old debts are being defrayed little by way of ensuring that the defaulters show evidence of payment before services are rendered.

“We applied appropriate sanctions whenever there is an infraction as a deterrent and to prevent a re-occurrence.
“NCAA is working hard to ensure that the airlines are operating safely in and out of our airspace.

He said Nigerian travel agencies are being controlled through registration and the process is ongoing.

He said the main source of revenue for the agency remained the internally-generated income from the five percent on TSC and five percent cargo sales charges.

The NCAA spokesman said NCAA controls passengers’ complaints in line with the provisions of the Nig. CARs
He said domestic airlines are insured overseas, and that this was largely because of the heavy capital involved.
Adurogboye added that Nigerian insurance firms provide the local content.

He said NCAA still ensures that airlines are properly and adequately insured so that they would be in a position to fulfil their part of the bargain in the event of an occurrence.

“NCAA has been at the forefront and also an advocate of training and retraining as a way out of manpower and ageing workforce staring us in the face,” he said.

Hit-and-run driver kills woman in Anambra

A yet to be identified woman was on Sunday killed by a hit-and-run driver in Awka, Anambra State.

The accident occoured at about 11:05pm at Regina Caeli Junction on the Enugu-Onitsha expressway.

According to Mr Andrew Kumapayi, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Anambra, the accident left the woman dead instantly.

Kumapayi said the corpse had been deposited at the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital morgue, Awka.

The sector commander reiterated the call for pedestrians to be careful on the road, especially during festive periods, because of increased vehicular movement.

“My advice to road users especially pedestrians during this season is to be extra careful when crossing the road.

“They should endeavour to use the pedestrian bridge provided for them if any, and if there is none, they should look left, right and left again to make sure that the road is free before crossing.

“Let them wear reflective clothes when walking in the night so that they can be seen by oncoming vehicles,” NAN quoted him as saying.

Police intercept mast robbers, arrest gang leader in Lagos

One Sir Peter Uche, who led a 7-man robbery gang to invade MTN mast in Ejigbo to steal batteries, has been arrested by police operatives from Ejigbo Police Divisional Headquarters.
Uche was arrested and his Toyota 4 Runner SUV was recovered with MTN batteries the gang had already stolen.
The operation reportedly swung into action when the Police at Ejigbo Division headquarters led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), CSP Olabisi Okuwobi, received a distress call from residents that robbers were operating at the site of the MTN mast.
It was gathered that the timely response of the Anti-Robbery team to the distress calls and their prompt arrival at the scene led to the arrest of the 7-man robbery gang while they were still operating

The armed robbers had reportedly tied up the security man on duty before carrying out their criminal acts.

It was gathered that the robbery took place at the MTN mast in Double Powerline, Ejigbo, Lagos, where the robbers loaded twelve batteries into their vehicle, before the arrival of the police.
The police source said the robbers tried to escape on sighting the police team, but one gang member, Sir Peter Uche, who claim to be a dismissed soldier was caught and arrested.
12 MTN mast batteries, an iron cutter and a Toyota 4Runner SUV with Registration number SMK 662 FA, belonging to Uche were recovered from the scene as exhibits and taken to the Police Station.
The suspect, who hails from Orlu in Imo State, is married with three children and held important positions in the Anglican Church before his arrest.
The police said they were making efforts towards arresting other members of the gang and the matter may be transferred to FSARS for further investigation.

Hadi Sirika Shuns Buhari’s Directive On Boards’ Inauguration, 2 Years After
User Avatar Forum: Market Place
Posted by: Edoman - 12-02-2019, 01:34 PM - No Replies

Quote:Lagos – Four years after the current administration came onboard in the sector, Sen. Hadi Sirika, the Minister of Aviation, is yet to inaugurate board of directors of agencies under the ministry, despite their appointment and approval.

About two years ago, President Muhammadu Buhari approved the appointment of board of directors of five out of the six agencies in the sector, while Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, national chairman, All Progressives Congress (APC), also gave a deadline for the inauguration of the board members over a year ago, but despite the approvals and directives, Sirika is yet to inaugurate the board members.

The agencies with board of directors, according to the Acts setting them up, are the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), and the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT).

Others are the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), while the Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) does not have a board of directors.

It was gathered that the Act setting up NCAA stipulated the appointment of professionals as chairman and members of the board, as well as representatives from three ministries.

A source close to the Ministry of Aviation, over the weekend, told our correspondent that the inauguration of the boards was stalled by Sirika who claimed that their compositions and appointments negated the Acts setting up some of the agencies.

It was learnt that the minister said that the Acts establishing the agencies stipulated the qualification of the persons to be appointed into the boards, a requirement he alleged the Federal Government did not consider when announcing their compositions.

Besides, another source in one of the agencies confided in our correspondent that “some people in the ministry are not comfortable with having a board to direct their affairs, rather they want to be the only ones regulating and controlling activities in the agencies without supervision”.

Also, the agency source added that if the composition of the appointees negated the Acts setting up some of the agencies as claimed by the minister, he ought to have officially met with the appropriate authorities to address the perceived challenge in the composition, saying that the minister had always been reluctant to inaugurate the board members.

Some of the stakeholders spoken with by our correspondent said the non-inauguration of the boards would have a grave effect on the agencies as the chief executive officers (CEOs) had a limit of what they could spend without recourse to the board of directors.

Comrade Olayinka Abioye, the immediate past General Secretary of the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), in a recent interview with our correspondent, said that the non-inauguration of the boards indicated that something was actually wrong in the sector.

He insisted that since the Acts setting up the agencies stipulated that they should have board of directors, the minister ought to have set up the boards immediately they were appointed.

He said the minister might have willfully delayed their inauguration in order to continue to have influence in the agencies.

He said: “The implication is that the minister wants to still control the happenings in the parastatals. You are aware that by the Acts establishing these agencies, they are supposed to report to a board and, in the absence of a board, the minister takes charge.

“So, if the minister has the audacity to set aside the directive of Mr. President, it goes to show that something is definitely wrong with our system.”

Besides, Group Capt John Ojikutu (rtd), aviation analyst, in a recent interview, observed that it was not the first time the directive of President Buhari would not be implemented by the ministry.

Ojikutu cited the directive to NAMA on the agency’s taking over of the country’s territorial water from Accra, Ghana, and the directive to NCAA to carry out audit of Dana Air after the recent minor and major incidents involving the airline as among president’s directives not carried out in recent times.

James Odaudu, the Director, Publicity, Ministry of Aviation, could not be reached for comments.

It would be recalled that in the last week of February, Buhari had in 2018 directed all ministers to inaugurate the boards of various parastatals under their supervision.

The president issued this directive through a circular signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha.

Names on the NAMA list were Dr. Yakubu Lame, Abdullahi Y. Gashu’a, Capt. Ibraheem Olugbade.

FAAN had Otunba Niyi Adebayo, Akingbesote Akinyeye, Suleiman Mohammed, and Bello Babura.

NCAT had Mrs. Deborah Iliyas and Chie Simon Owhofa.

The names that appeared on the list for NiMET were Otunba J.F. Faleke and Dr. Chichi Ashwe.

It would also be recalled that Comrade Oshiomhole had, about a year ago, given Sirika and Dr. Chris Ngige, Minister of Labour, a week ultimatum to inaugurate their boards.

‘Imo no longer a laughing stock’
December 2, 2019

Imo State Governor Emeka Ihedioha is gradually introducing a new paradigm in the execution of projects and development of the state writes DAMIAN DURUIHEOMA

Before the inauguration of Imo State Governor Emeka Ihedioha on May 29, the ‘Eastern Heartland’ was seemingly known as a place where absurdities were elevated to statecraft.

The immediate past governor, Rochas Okorocha, on many occasions, proudly declared that his ideas drove him “mad”. He also took delight in the fact that his “madness” worked for him in governing the state in his eight years as its chief executive.

However, since Ihedioha took office, there seems to be a paradigm shift in the governance of the state. In his quest to change the narrative of Imo State and get it working again, Ihedioha has taken bold steps in addressing major challenges bedevilling the state.

Barely six months in office, Ihedioha’s efforts in repositioning the state are yielding the desired impact.

During his campaigns in the run-up to 2019 general elections, Ihedioha promised a better deal and a departure from the past. The governor reinforced this promise when he stated his administration’s willingness to encourage due process and rule of law as well as rebuilding the state.

To fulfil these promises, Ihedioha initiated positive actions in critical sectors. These include power, roads rehabilitation, agriculture, floods and erosion control, security, good governance, education, health, pensions, and civil service.

Governor Ihedioha said he inherited a dysfunctional government where every department of the state was in ruins.

He said, however, that within six months, he has restored sanity in governance and has eased the way the government is run.

He said: “When I came in, the style of governance deviated from every norm, and Imo was the worst run state of the federation. There were institutional and infrastructural disorder and decay. No state had the number of garnishee orders such as Imo; land cases against the Imo government were numerous. The state was sufficiently distracted that we had to spend money hiring lawyers from private firms because the government doesn’t have enough lawyers to prosecute its cases.

“It took me two weeks before I got where to operate from because the Government House was nothing near its name; the judiciary was in bad shape; with the Judges being owed close to 30 months’ salary; promotions and appointments in the civil service were arbitrarily done with the result that the sector collapsed.

“The House of Assembly, which is supposed to be a place of dignity for the state lawmakers is currently debased and in ruins and the lawmakers had no houses to stay.

“We are planning to pull the building down but if we do, it would be misrepresented; so I think we have to rebuild it despite the lean resources at our disposal.

“Go and take a personal look at the building, the infrastructure there has decayed. If the lawmakers are your family members, you cannot allow them to stay there. So, we are thinking of relocating them to another site so that we can rebuild the place.”

He decried the discomfort of the offices of the lawmakers, describing the situation as a shame.

Ihedioha said the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) has advised him to evacuate the state lawmakers away to a temporary accommodation to avoid disaster.

The governor, however, has good news for the people as he said that Imo is now on the right footing.

“What we started first was finding men and women of various professional competence to man various sectors of our economy; we also started by fixing our roads,” he said.

According to Ihedioha, his government has already procured a total of 25 road contracts worth over N40 billion. The 25 projects, spread across the state, include the three key exit routes from the state capital – Owerri-Orlu Road, Owerri-Okigwe Road, Owerri-Umuahia Road- all of which are federal roads.

The governor also informed that, away from the practice in the previous administration, no fewer than 16 notable construction companies were on-site in Imo State working on the 25 roads.

According to him, for the first time in eight years, the Ministry of Works had begun procuring contracts.

“Every project we’ve done in Imo has passed through a deliberate and diligent public procurement process,” he said.

He noted that all the affected companies, after due procurement processes, have been mobilised with a 15 per cent retainer.

“For every construction company that is working in Imo State currently, the condition is that we must inspect and evaluate your equipment; the company must open an office in the state and employ Imo citizens,” he said.

The governor added that signposts for the projects with names of the contractors would soon be displayed for public consumption, adding that his interest was to establish good governance through the Bureau for Public Procurement.

“At present, our state is no longer a laughing stock. Imo people now know that they have a governor who talks and works. We are putting a round peg in round holes, while our civil service is now performing well,” he added.

On the introduction of a Single Treasury Account (TSA) in the state, the governor, who justified the policy, said while the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) had increased from N200 million to N877 million, the state was saving the sum of N280 million monthly following the successful verification of pensioners.

The governor, who revealed that the total monthly allocation the state receives stood between N4.8 billion and N5 billion, said the state’s monthly salary, wage and pension bill stands at N2.7 billion and N680 million respectively, just as about N1.5 billion is being deducted monthly from the Federation Account as repayment for the bailout funds given to the state under the Okorocha administration.

In spite of the grim financial condition of the state, Ihedioha insisted that he would not take any loan to prosecute the plethora of projects his administration has so far initiated, nor tamper with the local government funds.

“The only loan I told them to take is agriculture loan from the Central Bank of Nigeria. And anyone who takes and misuses it will spend the rest of his life in jail because the money is meant for agricultural production and development,” he said.

He reiterated his determination to run a transparent government with the principle of separation of power in place.

On the construction of stadia in various local government areas, the governor said the state is set to bid for the national sports festival with over N200 million injected in the renovation of the Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri, while modern sporting equipment is being installed to bring the sporting arena to international standards.

He expressed happiness that the autonomy his administration had given to local government areas in the state has started bearing fruits as according to him, life has returned to the rural communities.

“This was actually what I had always wanted for our people in rural communities. I wanted to stop rural-urban migration. I want our people to live in their villages. The liveliness in the local government areas will increase,” Ihedioha said.

Apart from this, he revealed that his administration has huge plans to make agriculture the state’s destination with the ongoing reinventing of Adapalm and Avutu Poultry.

To make this possible, be said, he sent over 500 youths of the state to Nasarawa State to acquire modern agriculture skills that would help them venture into the sector.

Atiku attacks Buhari over borrowing plan

 December 2, 2019

Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has attacked President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration over the increase in borrowing.

Atiku said Nigeria under the administration of Buhari, has taken more loans in the last three years than it did in the 30-year period preceding 2016.

He described the monumental increase in borrowings vis-à-vis an unprecedented reduction in investments in education as worrisome.

DAILY POST recalls that Buhari on Thursday sought the re-consideration and approval of the National Assembly on the 2016-2018 External Borrowing Plan of the Federal Government.

The former Vice President said this while speaking at a ceremony hosted by the American University of Nigeria on Saturday in Yola, the capital of Adamawa.

“Two weeks ago, a friend of mine, Prof. Anya O. Anya, revealed that Nigeria has taken more loans in the last three years than she has taken in the 30-year period preceding 2016.

“I am a businessman. Perhaps the first lesson one learns in business is that you do not take loans except it is to expand your business. There is no justification for taking out loans to pay salaries; meanwhile, you are not investing in your future generation.

“Nigeria’s greatness is not as tied to her elders as it is tied to her youth. That is where our investments should be focussed on,” Atiku added.

May & Baker Nigeria Plc has signed  a manufacturing agreement with Sanofi Nigeria Limited, a subsidiary of the French pharmaceutical giant Sanofi.

Under the agreement, May & Baker Nigeria will use its World Health Organisation (WHO)-certified manufacturing facility to produce four product brands of Sanofi for sale in Nigeria and the West African market.

The products which May & Baker Nigeria will manufacture for Sanofi include Flagyl tablets and Suspension and Tarivid tablets, anti-infective medicines and Malareich tablets, an anti-malaria drug.

Industry analysts saw the agreement as  a direct response to the call by the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC)  for pharmaceutical brand owners to localise their production by using locally available capacity to produce quality products in Nigeria.

The agreement was signed by Sanofi’s General Manager and Country Chair Nigeria – Ghana, Mrs. Folake Odediran and Managing Director, May & Baker Nigeria Plc, Mr. Nnamdi Okafor.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by Ms. Valeria Saviano, Sanofi’s Head of Supply Chain Africa, Mr. Sam Ohuabunwa, President, Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, Director General of NAFDAC represented by Dr. Monica Eimunjeze, a director in NAFDAC, Mr.  Femi Soremekun President of NIROPHARM, and Mr. Frank Monumeh, Executive Secretary, Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Group of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (PMG-MAN), among other dignitaries in the healthcare industry.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Okafor said  May & Baker Nigeria invested heavily in setting up its internationally standard production facility and obtain WHO Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) certification to enable her  extend services to other  products owners who  might wish to heed the call to localise their medicine production in Nigeria.

He noted that May & Baker Nigeria’s WHO-certified complex, known as The Pharma Centre, has capacity to produce 6.0 billion tablets and 37.5 million 60ml liquid medicines annually.

“At the moment, we are only able to utilise 50 per cent of this capacity, leaving a large room for other products owners who may want to use the facility,” Okafor said.

In her remarks, Odediran said Sanofi was satisfied with the quality of May & Baker Nigeria’s facilities and handling of their products.

According to her, building strategic partnership with May & Baker Nigeria Plc to support local manufacturing ambition is based on May & Baker Nigeria’s rich history of producing high quality medicines in Nigeria.

“It also follows rigorous due diligence exercise and successful compliance outcomes in line with local laws and our global policies,” Odediran said.

Commenting on the agreement, Adeyeye said the May & Baker Nigeria and Sanofi partnership was a synergy that would promote the localisation policy of NAFDAC and eventual attainment of medicine self-sufficiency.

I'll be very brief about this, on the sad day of the incident, I spoke with the rapist who was my course mate about coming to pick up a hand out, our discussion was based on academics. When I was done with what I needed to do in town before leaving for my hostel which was far.
Intellectual

I arrived his place of abode but, met his absence. His apartment was open & I was of the opinion he was in close proximity. I put a call through to him, he picked up from a noisy background and immediately told me he was on his way back & talked very hastily. He didn't show up...

And I was just few minutes to taking my leave hence postponing my cause for stopping by so I put a call through to him for the second time and he began apologizing, saying thus, "he was trying to handle something and would be back SOON". It was just when I was about to leave

that an unpredicted heavy downpour with accompanying thunderstorm followed suit. I was stranded at this point, hoping it would come to a halt, instead increased at every second. This is the part I oftentimes find difficult explaining to people except if they had been there to see

for themselves. There was nothing I could do and I was very sad about it. The road to his house was in a deplorable state, the chaotically heavy rain wouldn't stop, I felt trapped but unknown to me, danger was fast looming.
Intellectual

He finally got back, drenched & dripping off raindrops & apologizing non-stop. He went on to sleep on the floor & I slept on the bed. I was dressed in a pair of Jean and a white long length top & after saying my prayers, I shutdown.

At about 1am (I knew the time because there was a wall clock) he began heavy-tapping me to wake up, saying he wants to have sex with me, I began rubbing my eyes as I woke up to this horror, "Wake up, I want to have sex with you!" he yelled, at this point, I felt my heart sink into

my stomach, my pulse raced. I immediately went down on my knees, crying, begging "Emeka, it's me", "Emeka, please don't do this", "Emeka, please I'm still a virgin, please I'm begging you not to do this, please". At this point, I was begging on God, the angels & saints to help me
Intellectual

but, before I could utter another word, things took a violent turn. He turned off the light, pushed me & began dragging me on the floor. THIS WAS THE GENESIS OF THE HORROR & TRAUMA I was exposed to. I fought back with my legs, tried to run to door in the dark but, he dragged me

& began to batter me, he grabbed me by my hair, "I said I must have sex with you!!" he slapped me several times , & each time I tried to push him, he'd punch me, hit my head on the floor, & continue to drag me on the floor severally! mercilessly pummeling other parts of my body
Intellectual

I was already screaming to attract his neighbours & this got him a lot more infuriated! This phase continued until I began to grow weak & eventually received the last thunderbolt of punch and I collapsed to the floor. While all of these lasted, I couldn't even see in the dark

Then I could hear voices and banging on the door, "Emeka open this door! Emeka, open this door! It seemed like they were trying to break down the door but, he paid deaf ears, slapped me again, then put his hands around the waist line of my jean, tore it down! lifted my legs

up like a wild animal! The last scream I let out could bring down a building and this was when the defilement occurred, he ensured he succeeded at this before dashing to the door, I heard heavy footsteps, the lights came on and people were screaming...I lay in a pool of blood
Intellectual

I was lifted up from the blood, with people crying. I don't even know how else to describe...
I'm sorry I'll have to apply the brakes at this point because this is too much for a person to bear. I look back to that day and sink in a sea of regrets, I wish I knew better. I'm broken

Ceramic tiles imports into Nigeria to hit N761 billion
User Avatar Forum: Market Place

The importation of ceramic tiles into Nigeria, would by 2025 hit $2.1 billion, which amounts to over N761 billion. A Professor of Ceramics Engineering, Patrick Oaik-hinan, gave the figure on the sideline of the launch of Oaikhinan Ceramics Foundation in Lagos.

According to The Nation, Oaik-hinan lamented that despite Nigeria’s potential growth for ceramics, its import bill was huge.
The professor, however, made known that the huge import bill was as a result of the gradual destruction of ceramics manufacturing in Nigeria, which according to him, was witnessed in the 1950s and 1980s when five international ceramic manufacturing companies located in different parts of the country went moribund.

Oaik-hinan added that the ceramics industry was further affected by focus on crude oil production.
“Currently, there are nine operating ceramic companies in Nigeria, eight for tiles and one for sanitary ware, and they operate under various capacities. Ceramics (ROYAL) is the oldest major manufacturer of ceramic tiles and is closely followed by PNT.
“The average production capacity is 40,000-45,000 square meter per day for the eight manufacturing companies combined. I thank the Chinese for 100 per cent investment in six out of the eight ceramic tile companies, and the Indian with investment support for the remaining two tiles companies,” he added.

What you should know: In Nigeria, the Ceramics industry had played a significant role in catering for the common man and boosting the economy at a point. However, it was faced with multifaceted problems which encumbered its performances.
In order to resuscitate the ailing Ceramic industries in the country, some measures must be put in place.

The measures include – reliance on abundant local raw materials to substitute imported inputs; provision of funds to enhance production; ensuring a good management system, and provision of technical assistance through international bodies, amongst others.

CBN targets $4bn non oil exports revenue in 2020

ON DECEMBER 2, 20195:27 AMIN BUSINESS, FINANCE, NEWS FacebookTwitterEmailWhatsAppPinterestShare CBN By Babajide Komolafe

THE Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, said it would intensify policy measures to achieve $4 billion in non-oil exports revenue in 2020. FIRS targets 80% revenue from non-oil sector in next 3 years(Opens in a new browser tab) This represents 100 percent growth when compared with $2 billion non-oil exports revenue achieved in 2019. CBN Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, disclosed this in Lagos while unfolding policy priorities of the apex bank in his keynote address at the 2019 Annual Bankers Dinner of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria, CIBN. Emefiele said that the 100 percent growth in non oil exports is part of efforts aimed at protecting the Nigerian economy from global macroeconomic headwinds.

Noting improvements in the economy, as reflected by the growth in Gross Domestic Product, GDP, in the third quarter of 2019, stable exchange rate, moderation in inflation rates, improved soundness of the financial system and increased lending to the economy, Emefiele stressed that the country is still vulnerable to global macroeconomic headwinds caused by trade tensions between United States and China, and the continued uncertainties over Brexit.

In addition to the global headwinds, Emefiele noted the challenge of weak growth, with little impact on unemployment and the continued dependence on crude oil as major source of government revenue and foreign exchange. Given these challenges, he stressed the need for measures that will drive domestic productivity and diversify the nation’s export base. In this respect, Emefiele said the CBN in 2020 will support greater economic growth, price and exchange rate stability through a series of policies which include measures to grow the nation’s non oil exports to $4 billion in 2020. He said: “We intend to address some of the barriers faced by non-oil exporters in producing goods for the export market.

Working with the Nigerian Export Import Bank, we will work to improve access to the N500 billion facility designed to support the growth of Nigeria’s non-oil exports. Part of our emphasis will be on increasing export of value-added goods relative to raw materials. CBN commences intervention to resuscitate cassava production(Opens in a new browser tab) Firms that have access to these facilities, would be able to obtain loans at single digits. This would enable them to expand their production lines and improve the quality of their products, so that they can compete effectively with their peers from other parts of the world.”

$60b forex cash kept naira stable for 29 months, says Emefiele
December 2, 2019

THE $60 billion inflow from the Investors’ and Exporters’ Foreign Exchange (I&E Forex) Window has been identified by Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele as one of the policies that sustained the stability of the naira.

Speaking at the 54th Annual Bankers Dinner in Lagos at the weekend, Emefiele said that as part of the bank’s priorities for next year, the regulator was determined to maintain its stable exchange policy stance in the near to medium term given the relatively high level of reserves.

Emefiele, who spoke on the theme: “Delivering a strong Sustainable Growth for the Nigerian  Economy”, said the Investors’ and Exporters’ Forex Window has attracted over $60 billion worth of transaction since the inception of the window in April 2017, adding that the inflows has supported naira’s stability.

He said: “With a moderated inflation rate, positive Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth and improvements in our external reserve position, the naira-dollar exchange rate at the I&E Forex window has remained stable for the past 29 months at N360 – $1 and we have witnessed significant convergence in the exchange rate across the various market windows. Local currency has also remained at N306 to dollar at the official market.”

Emefiele said the headline Inflation declined from its high of 18.7 per cent to 11.08 per cent in August 2019.

The CBN boss said: “We recently noticed an uptick in headline inflation, which stood at 11.61 per cent in October 2019, partly driven by cost – push factors such as the recent border protection measures of the Federal Government.

“We believe this effect will be temporary, as efforts are currently being made to induce greater production of staple food items. However, core inflation as at October 2019 is now under nine per cent. This decline in inflation has been due to our maintenance of a tighter monetary policy rate at 13.5 percent, and improved inflow of foreign exchange.

“Besides, the forex reserves remained above $40 billion as at October, relative to its low point of $23 billion in October 2016. We have been able to build our reserves in the midst of lower oil prices, as strong reserves aid the confidence of domestic and external investors. Today, our current stock of external reserves is able to finance 9 months of current import commitments.

Emefiele also listed the bank’s other priorities for 2020 to include support for greater economic growth, price stability and low inflation, even as he hinted on the continued tight monetary policy stance of the bank and the establishment of a Bankers’ Charitable Endowment Fund.

The CBN governor announced the establishment of a Bankers’ Charitable Endowment Fund that will fund a major charitable initiative every year starting in 2020. According ‘to him, the endowment will directly fund strategic social programmes in states and local communities across Nigeria.

He expressed the hope that the Fund would spur a trend across other industries and sectors to collaborate and work together to better the lives of all Nigerians.

Speaking on economic and financial sector developments and how they affect the macro-economic outlook for 2020, he said in spite of the positive growth the economy experienced, growth had remained slow due to “some structural constraints in the economy”.

According to him, the pace of growth, given Nigeria’s growing population, exposed the economy to shocks, such as changes in the oil price, and sentiments in the global financial markets.

Disclosing plans by the apex bank to support the economic recovery and enable stronger growth for the country’s GDP, he said that the Bank would continue its current tight stance, particularly in view of rising inflation expectations.

“Though we will act to appropriately adjust the policy rate in line with unfolding conditions and outlooks, the CBN will continue to ensure that the policy interest rate is delicately set to balance the objectives of price stability with output stabilisation,” he explained.

Doing a recap of the outgoing year’s highlights, Emefiele recalled that the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) remained positive, adding that the positive growth in GDP had been driven by improvements in Agriculture, Oil and Gas, Manufacturing and ICT as well as the intervention programmes of the CBN, along with sustained supply of foreign exchange and stability of the naira.

The governor also highlighted the bank’s effort in development financing, which, he said, the CBN had sustained in order to help support growth in critical sectors of the economy such as agriculture and the manufacturing sectors, through programmes such as the Anchor Borrowers’ Programme, the Commercial Agriculture Credit Scheme and the Bankers Committee Agri-Business/Small and Medium Enterprises Investment Scheme (AGSMEIS).

Alluding to the economic face-off between some countries, as well as the likely challenges the economy could face due to moderate oil prices, he stressed the need for Nigeria to build up the necessary buffers that would protect the economy from pressures in the global market. He then restated the need to boost local production and diversify the country’s export base.

Emefiele stressed: “We should encourage Nigerians to consume goods that can be produced in Nigeria, knowing full well that a time will come when we may not have the foreign exchange to aid such activities, if we continue to rely on earnings from the export of crude oil,” he emphasized.

$30bn loan: MAN worries over FG’s repayment capacity

By Sunday Michael Ogwu,

The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) said it is concerned about the debt servicing capacity of the federal government if the National Assembly approves the planned $30 billion loan.

The Director General, Segun Ajayi-Kadri told Daily Trust at the weekend that the rising debt profile of Nigeria is a source of concern, “especially the capacity of government to effectively service it and at the same time, meet the bursting needs and aspiration of the citizenry going forward. ADVERTISEMENT “Already, our budget projections for 2020 anticipate a ₦2.45 trillion debt service, higher than the ₦2.14trn earmarked for capital expenditure,” he noted.

ADVERTISEMENT HOW OVER 5000 NIGERIA MEN HAVE PERMANENTLY OVERCOME TERRIBLE BEDROOM PERFORMANCE DUE TO THIS RECENT BRILLIANT DISCOVERY BY MEDICAL CONSULTANTS He said total external debt stands at $27.16 billion, while domestic debt has climbed to $56.72bn. Nigeria’s debt stock increased by 3.11% from $81.27bn in the first quarter of 2019 to $83.88bn (N25.70trn) in June 2019.

“This is almost 13% increase year-on-year from the $73.21bn in June 2018. And even though our debt-to-Gross Domestic Product (GDP) ratio, which stands at 28 percent, is still below the average in Africa, our revenue-to-GDP ratio remains low,” he said. President Muhammadu Buhari last week returned to the National Assembly to re-present the federal government’s request for a $29.96bn fresh foreign loan.

The proposal was part of the external borrowing plan for 2016-2018 rejected by the eighth National Assembly. The MAN official said the loan was predicated on the need to use the facility to actualise projects in the power, agriculture, transport and mining sectors of the Nigerian economy. “My assumption is that the Federal Government would have provided the needed details, the absence of which, according to the 8th Senate, necessitated its rejection in the first try,” he said.

RHAPSODY OF REALITIES

MONDAY, 2ND DECEMBER.

RENEWING THE CHARACTER OF YOUR MIND

And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God (Romans 12:2).

Your mind is very important. It’s the door to your spirit, and it’s also the door from your spirit out, to bring something into the natural world. The underlined portion of our opening verse tells us, “ be ye transformed (metamorphosed) by the renewing of your mind....” This means you exchange your thoughts for God’s thoughts; you cast away your carnal thinking, your fleshly ideas, and receive His glorious thoughts and ideas. The latter part of it says, “…that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”

The word, “prove” is from the Greek - dokimazo— meaning to scrutinise or examine. Simply, it’s like the Customs official who’s assigned the responsibility of disallowing illegal exports and imports- interdiction of contrabands. Once he sees such, he disallows it from entering the country.

That’s what that scripture is making us understand as the result of renewing the mind. You’re able to “prove,” that is, scrutinise the thoughts you allow to go through your mind, to be sure they’re consistent with God’s Word and His perfect will for your life.
Now that you’re born again, you’re required to think excellence and only see pictures of excellence.

Focus your mind on things that are pure, just, honest, lovely, virtuous and of good report (Philippians 4:8). You can’t afford to continue with the old way of life; you’re different now.

Ephesians 4:22-23 says, “That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your mind.” It’s expressing the same thought: think and live differently now that you’re a child of God. As you do this, you’d be giving vent to the glory in your recreated human spirit; the beauty of the Spirit in you will be revealed on the outside in an ever increasing measure. Hallelujah!

CONFESSION

I’ve been clothed with the new spiritual self, which is renewed and moulded after the image and likeness of God. I think excellent thoughts and only see pictures of excellence, success, victory and abundance! My mind is focused on things that are pure, just, honest, lovely, virtuous and of good report. Glory to God!

#TALKINGSESSION

2ND DECEMBER.

KINDLY SAY THESE WORDS OUT LOUD.

Dear Heavenly Father, I thank You for Your nature of love which has been poured into my heart through the Holy Spirit.

I manifest that love lavishly today to everyone around me, showing them the higher and more excellent way of the Kingdom life -- the love-way!

Thank You for loving me eternally, and teaching me to love You in return.

I thank You for I've called me to the triumphant and victorious life in Christ Jesus. It doesn’t matter where or the situation I find myself; I win always!

I record great and notable achievements, enjoying my days in success, progress, peace, joy, health, and unending prosperity.

My body is Your temple; thus, I refuse to give my body to sin, wickedness, lust, sickness, or the devil. My body belongs to You; Your righteousness is manifested therein, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

God bless you

Australian actor, George Lazenby, who became the youngest person to play James Bond in 1969 at 29-year-old has revealed he slept with a lot of women when he was in his prime.

The 80-year-old told The Herald Sun on Sunday he has likely slept with more than a thousand women in his time, adding: 'I would go through six girls a week in London.'

Speaking of his promiscuous life at that time, George, who is the only Australian to have ever played 007, said: 'It was the time of the pill, mini-skirts, the girls were crazy. You had to run and hide after a while.'

The legendary star said the rumour of him bedding a thousand women was most likely true, explaining: 'There wasn't anything better to do. I don't know, I never counted but it went on from 1964 until 1980 when AIDS came in. I didn't want to die for it.'

Describing one shocking sexual encounter on the 1969 film set, George said: 'I was messing with the receptionist at the hotel in the stuntman's tent and she [co-star Diana Rigg] was walking up the path and the boys lifted the side of the tent up and there I was on the job. That blew it with Diana and me' he recalled.

The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit (Taskforce) has obtained a court order authorising it to auction 108 court forfeited/abandoned vehicles to interested members of the public.

Chairman of the agency, CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi disclosed that the vehicles to be auctioned by the government include 86 court forfeited and 22 abandoned vehicles after they had been impounded by the enforcement team of the agency in different parts of the State for driving against traffic (one-way) and committing other traffic offences.

Egbeyemi also stated that the public auction is scheduled to hold on Tuesday and Wednesday, 3rd and 4th of December, 2019 at the agency’s car park, Ikorodu, Lagos.

According to him, “It was after the expiration of the 30 days public notice issued by the agency in line with the dictates of the law to all owners of the 22 abandoned vehicles to claim them that the government obtained the court order to auctioned them to interested members of the public”

“Let me commend the present administration for the on-going massive roads rehabilitation going on simultaneously across the State and to state clearly that motorists both private and commercial bus drivers should desist from driving against traffic (one-way) or causing traffic obstructions to other roads users with.”

FG seeking Sowore, Bakare’s transfer to prison –Falana

December 2,

Ade Adesomoju, Abuja

Human rights lawyer, Mr Femi Falana (SAN), said on Sunday the Federal Government had applied to the Federal High Court in Abuja for an order of transfer of his clients who were arrested for their call for the #RevolutionNow protest from the custody of the Department of State Service to prison.

The #RevolutionNow protest convener and publisher of SaharaReporters, Omoyele Sowore, and his co-detainee, Adebayo Bakare, have been in the custody of the DSS since August despite the orders of the Federal High Court in Abuja for their release.

Falana, in a letter dated December 1, 2019 and addressed to the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), requested the minister to direct the DSS to release his clients.

He urged Malami to ensure compliance with the orders of British courts and the ones issued by the Nigerian domestic courts.

He also threatened to report both Malami and the prosecutor appointed by the minister to prosecute Sowore and Bakare, Dr Hassan Liman (SAN), to both the Nigerian Bar Association and the Legal Practitioners’ Disciplinary Committee, to take disciplinary actions against them for allegedly encouraging the DSS to continue to disobey the court orders for his clients’ release.

Falana stated, “In treating the court order with provocative contempt, the State Security Service has insisted on approving the sureties of our clients after they have been verified by the Federal High Court.

“From the information at our disposal, there is no precedent whatsoever for the illegal demand.

“Instead of purging the security agency of such contempt of the Federal High Court, the prosecutor, Dr Hassan Liman (SAN), engaged by your good self to prosecute our clients, has curiously applied to the trial court to have them transferred to a correctional centre and detained indefinitely for having the temerity to question the illegal directive to produce their sureties.”

He added, “In view of the fact that the Federal Government has never  given any precondition before complying with the orders of the British Court in the case of P & ID and other matters, we are compelled to request you  to direct the State Security Service to comply with the orders of the Federal High Court  for the unconditional release of our clients.

not succeed, I won the election and Smart Adeyemi remains my political wife - Dino Melaye

Embattled Senator, Dino Melaye has reacted to losing the Kogi West Senatorial election, insisting that he won the election and that his conqueror, Senator Smart Adeyemi remains his political wife.

INEC’s Returning Officer of the election, Professor Olajide Lawal, had said Adeyemi, who represented the district from 2007-2015, polled 88,373 votes to beat Senator Dino Melaye of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who scored 62,133 votes.

Melaye however said he will go to court, saying he believed he won the election.

Quote:In series of tweets, Melaye said: “I want to specially thank God almighty that he preserved my life after 5 attempted assassination, combined forces of security agencies, INEC, Federal, State and LG powers. I was fought on land, in the air and spiritually. It was not about election but my life. God, I thank you.
“I will challenge the temporal and evaporative victory of Adeyemi at the Tribunal. Victory attain by violence and fraud is tantamount to defeat, for it is momentary. It is not about Dino MELAYE, it is about Nigeria and our electoral system. I stay the course, not over yet.
“The reaction of men and women of goodwill all over Nigeria, especially the wonderful people of Kogi west who truly voted for me is a testimony that God is with me and with us all. I won the election and Adeyemi remains my political wife. Thank you Nigerians. Victory is certain.
“The forces against me are not beyond God. People should not worry about me, I am fine and will always be. I just thank God that the plan to kill me did not succeed. A living dog is better than a dead lion. I thank God for life. My name is Daniel, I can not fall or fail.”

A Nigerian family facing Deportation is calling on the Canadian Government to provide
User Avatar Forum: Other Stories
Posted by: Edoman - 12-01-2019, 05:15 PM - No Replies

Quote:A Nigerian family facing deportation is calling on the Canadian government to provide any assistance possible to avoid returning home, out of fear that two young girls — with another on the way — will be subjected to female genital mutilation.

Rasheedat Bakare, her husband Afeez, son Faaiq and daughter Faiqah all fled Nigeria and arrived in Canada in 2017. The family's youngest daughter Farhana was born in Canada in 2018.

The family of five was denied refugee status on Thursday and were told to leave the country by 3 p.m. on Friday.

"My children's life, my husband's life is at risk," said Rasheedat Bakare. "We ran away because they wanted to circumcise my baby girl — the one I brought from Africa. When I got to Canada, I had another baby girl. Currently, I'm pregnant with another baby girl. Now [I'll have] three baby girls — [and all of their lives are] going to be at risk."

The family's case caught the attention of the African Community Organization of Windsor (ACOW), a group that staged a protest on Friday outside the office of Windsor West NDP MP Brian Masse.

Claude Saizonou, president of the ACOW, said his group gathered outside Masse's office because "we've been through this kind of situation so many time."

"We never react. We never say anything," he said. "And we just have [had] enough of it. We just want to stand up and say 'If we don't do it, nobody would do it for us.' And this family has to stay today."

On Friday afternoon, after Rasheedat — who is approximately five months pregnant — collapsed and was rushed to hospital, the government issued a temporary delay on the deportation order.

Afeez Bakare said he's not sure when he and his family will be required to leave.

"I don't want my life and my family to be in danger," he said. "My wife is in a state where she is restless, she cannot do anything."

Family has limited options, says immigration consultant
Marwan Zarif, an immigration consultant who founded Canada by Choice in Windsor, said the Bakare family has a few options to appeal their deportation.

Their first option is to file for a pre-removal risk assessment.

"The problem with this pre-removal risk assessment is that immigration has to send you a form to fill," said Zarif. "You can't just apply for it."

A second option is to apply to the refugee appeal division part of the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada.

However, Zarif said the appeal division "hasn't been very active."
