Report at our disposal has it that a young man identified as Aletor Elebobo (Mr Daniel) few hours ago drowned at the popular Ethiop River in Delta.

The Delta State Police Command, Sapele Division few hours ago, confirmed the death of the young man who drowned (Sapele Bank) in the river.The corpse  of the deceased has been retrieved and deposited at a morgue.Police spokesman said....

“We learnt  went to the river to swim and got drowned. He added that full investigations had begun into the circumstances behind the incident".

One dies as truck crushes commercial bus in Osun






A tragic accident which occurred at Iwaraja around Erin-Ijesa on Ilesa/Akure expressway on Thursday December 5, claimed the life of one person. 
 
The accident involved a blue Mack truck (registration number FST 187 XX) carrying cement and a white commercial bus it rammed into. 
 
The Sector Command of the FRSC in the state, Mr Peter Oke confirmed the incident and further disclosed that the remains of the deceased has been taken to Wesley Hospital in Ilesa.

Former Governor of Anambra State and Vice Presidential candidate of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2019 election, Peter Obi has blamed the church for the high level of corruption witnessed in the country. 
 
Peter Obi who called for a reduction in the number of tollgates across the country as he spoke on the theme: “The Church and Good Governance” at the All Soul Church im Lekki on Wednesday December 4, stated that government must change its procurement processes to ensure money moved directly to institutions they are meant for.
 
The former Governor of Anambra State also alleged that the church is aiding corruption by blessing poor people who suddenly make money in government. According to him, the church must be conscious of being the conscience of the world.

Russian billionaire tycoon Dmitry Obretetsky mysteriously killed in crash involving three cars while walking his dog in Surrey








A Russian tycoon living in Britain has died after he was hit by a car while walking his dog near his Surrey home.
 
Surrey Police confirmed in a statement that 49-year-old Dmitry Obretetsky, whose company was the official distributor of Mars and Nestle was the man that was knocked down in Oxshott on November 25.
 
He died in hospital five days later. His dog Oscar was also killed in the three-car crash.
 

 
Obretetsky's friend Pavel Borovkov today questioned whether he was deliberately killed, telling Russian news outlet Life: 'You know, people drive cars very carefully in (Britain)... I don't exclude that he was specially knocked down.'
 
He also paid tribute to the tycoon as “a wonderful friend and colleague, an understanding and friendly person”.
 
He added: “Dmitry was a man of diverse interests - he did not focus only on business.
 
“We remember how at the famous quarter-final of Euro 2008 he proudly, completely alone in a crowd of Dutch fans, held a large Russian flag with the inscription ‘Volgograd’.
 
“He loved contemporary music - hard rock. He was a fan of Ozzy Osbourne.”
 
Surrey Police are appealing for witnesses and dashcam footage after the father of three was mysteriously killed.
 
A police spokesman said: 'We are continuing to investigate the circumstances around the collision.'
 
Dmitry Obretetsky 's death is the latest of a string of prominent Russians who have died in mysterious circumstances in the UK. In 2008, Badri Patarkatsishvili died at an estate near Leatherhead, while Alexander Peripilichnyy died near Weybridge in 2012, and in 2013, Boris Berezovsky died near Ascot. 
 
Obretetsky was reported to be a billionaire who made his fortune in Volgograd after the fall of the Soviet Union before moving to Surrey with his wife and children
 
He founded a household chemicals retail company and was owner of Magnat Trade Enterprise, official distributor for Mars, Nestle, and Procter & Gamble in Russia.
 
His consulting company LLC Advant said: “We know very little about what happened. Of course, this is a great loss and tragedy for all of us.”

28 okada riders arrested for attacking Lagos State Task Force officials (Photos)






28 motorcycle riders, popularly known as ‘Okadas’ have been arrested for allegedly attacking officials of the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit (Task force) at Oshodi under the Bridge, Lagos.  
 
CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi, Chairman of the Agency disclosed that a distressed call was received that about 14 illegal commercial motorcyclists attacked the enforcement team of the agency and wounded a paramilitary officer, Mr. Innocent Okoro, with operational vehicles damaged.  
 

 
Egbeyemi disclosed further that immediately after they attacked officials of the agency, investigation revealed that the 14 illegal motorcyclists ran into a compound at Igbehinadun Street around Oshodi and locked themselves up.

The EFCC, Kaduna Zonal Office has arrested one Mallam Abdulrashid Imam for defrauding one Arc. Mohammed Dewu, to the tune of over $3, 024, 000 (Three Million and Twenty Four Thousand United State Dollars). The arrest came as a result of a petition written by one Arc. Dewu who alledged that sometime in October, 2019, the suspect fraudulently collected the money from him claiming that he has the ability to impact Qur'anic knowledge to him by inserting a complete Quran into his head through the aids of Jinns (spirits) he is working with.
 
A statement from EFCC says the petitioner further alledged that subsequently to facilitate the realization of this fact, the suspect made him purchase items as follows: Two number of bottle perfume at N70,000; One bottle of special perfume at N160,000; One bottle of perfume for the medicine of his mother's leg sickness at N550,000; Set of 60 perfumes to activate the Qur'anic verses that will be implanted into his brain by the powers of jinn(spirits) at N1,680,000; Two mobile phones and SIM cards at N20,000; Thirty buckets of honey that will enable him transfer the Qur'anic verses to his brain. He further alleged that the suspect asked him to facilitate money which is to be given in United State Dollars, in which he paid the sum of $24,000 in the third week of October, 2019.
 
The suspect also asked the petitioner to pay $120,000 to help him secure money that will be dropping in two boxes in his room.

Minister of Transportation and former Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi has reacted to a federal high court judgement which directed the federal government to recover pensions and allowances received by former and serving senators as ex-governors. 
 
LIB reported earlier that the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) obtained the ”landmark judgement" after suing the Nigerian government for failing to seek the recovery of over “N40bn unduly received by the former governors” who are now serving senators and ministers.
 
Alleged beneficiaries of such pension include Bukola Saraki, Godswill Akpabio Rabiu Kwankwaso, Theodore Orji, Abdullahi Adamu, Sam Egwu, Shaaba Lafiagi, Joshua Dariye, Jonah Jang, Ahmed Sani Yarima, Danjuma Goje, Bukar Abba Ibrahim, Adamu Aliero, George Akume, Biodun Olujimi, Enyinaya Harcourt Abaribe, Rotimi Amaechi, Kayode Fayemi, Chris Ngige and Babatunde Fashola.
 
However reacting to the court judgement, Rotimi Amaechi who was listed as one of the beneficiaries denied ever asking or receiving pension as an ex-Governor after leaving office in 2015.  
 
He added that even if offered, he will politely decline and request that the money be given to Rivers State pensioners.

Senate threatens to order arrest of NIMASA DG, Dakuku Peterside over failure to honour invitation






The Senate Joint Committee on Navy, Marine Transport and Finance has threatened to order the arrest of Director-General, Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, Dakuku Peterside, if he fails to appear before it on Thursday.  
 
According to reports, the committee is investigating the N263.9bn alleged illegal security services carried out by Ocean Marine Solutions Ltd at the Safe Anchorage Area in Lagos Ports.  
 
Peterside had failed to appear before the panel but was represented at the hearing by the Principal Legal Officer of the agency, Haruna Argungu. The Committee Chairman, George Sekibo, told Argungu to inform his client to appear before the committee unfailingly on December 5, failure of which “a warrant of arrest would be issued against him by the Senate”. 
 
The committee refused to honour Argungu in that capacity by walking him out of the session in the presence of the Minister of State, Transportation, Gbemisola Saraki.
 
Trouble for the NIMASA boss started when Sekibo read out a list of heads of marine transport agencies invited for the hearing and discovered that Peterside was not personally present.

Parents who raped daughter, 2, and plotted to rape their unborn baby are jailed for life






A paedophile couple who raped their two-year-old daughter and plotted to rape their unborn baby have been jailed for life.
 
Gerrad Coddington, 25, and Christina Nelson-Coddington, 29, of Pauls Valley in Oklahoma, were handed whole life terms for sex crimes against children on Monday. They will never be given the chance to apply for parole.
 
The court heard how the parents handcuffed, beat and raped their 2-year-old daughter, and shared plans to do the same to their unborn baby in online messages.
 
They were sentenced by Judge Leah Edwards for 29 child sex crimes including rape, child abuse, incest and manufacturing child sex abuse images.
 
Oklahoma Attorney General Mike Hunter called the Coddingtons’ crimes the worst he has ever seen.
 
He said: "These two individuals engaged in horrifying acts of abuse and violence with innocent children… The actions of these two individuals, with regard to the children who were subjected to these horrific acts, unconscionable, unforgivable."
 
Hunter added: "These are evil people who presented a danger to society. I commend Judge Edwards’ decision to hold them accountable to the fullest extent of the law. I applaud the investigators with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, the investigator in my office with the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force and the attorneys who worked on this case to achieve a successful result."
 
The couple were arrested in June this year after sharing some of the vile images on Facebook. They were spotted by moderators, who tipped off FBI investigators, News9 reported. Bureau specialists then homed in on the couple, and uncovered more than 6,000 pages of incriminating communications between them.
 
The Coddingtons’ lodger Trista Hale Stratton was among those stunned to hear about allegations after their June arrest.
 
She told KFOR: "I don’t know what to think. They’re my family. ‘They’re great people. They’ll both give you the shirt off their back."
 

US Military denies sending more 14,000 troops to Middle East to counter Iran



                                   

         

The Pentagon has denied a Wall Street journal report, that said the US Administration was considering sending 14,000 more military troops to the middle east in face of increased hostuile actions from Iran.


Iran and US relations are at an all time low ever since Iran allegedly sent drones to attack Saudi Arabia's refineries and also attack ships that traveled over the strait of Hormuz in response to increased economic sanctions from the US after Trump's administration pulled out from the Iran Nuclear deal.

The Wall Street Journal on Wednesday reported the possible military deployment would include "dozens" more ships and double the number of troops added to the US forces in the region since the beginning of this year, citing unnamed US officials.

The report also said US President Donald Trump could make a decision on the troop boost as early as this month. but the Pentagon has now come out to deny the report.
 


"To be clear, the reporting is wrong. The US is not considering sending 14,000 additional troops to the Middle East," Pentagon spokeswoman Alyssa Farah tweeted.
             
                 
 
A senior Pentagon official said on Wednesday there were indications Iran could potentially carry out aggressive actions in the future.

"We also continue to see indications, and for obvious reasons I won't go into the details, that potential Iranian aggression could occur," John Rood, the Pentagon's number three official, told reporters.

"We've sent very clear and blunt signals to the Iranian government about the potential consequences of aggression," Rood said.

The US Military sailed the USS Abraham Lincoln warship through the strait of Hormuz in mid-November as a show of force and a deterrent to Iran who have recently stalled or captured ships transporting through the strait.

The strait of Hormuz is a very narrow waterway between Iran and Oman that 90 percent of the world's oil shipping activities pass through, so a blockade by Iran on the shipping lane would definitely send oil prices spiraling and affect oil transportation round the world.
 

Police accused of locking up a 12-year-old girl who came to report her police officer father for 'defiling' her (Photo)









Officers at Isebania Police Station in Kenya have been accused of locking up a 12-year-old girl after she had gone to report her father for allegedly defiling her. 
 
According to Nairobi News, the distraught 12-year-old girl had accused her father, a police officer, of defiling her on November 1 at their home in Nyabohanse town after luring her into his bedroom.
 
The victim claimed that her attempts to have her father arrested were futile after officers turned against her. She said they locked her up in a bid to conceal evidence of defilement.
 
Narrating the ordeal, the Standard Five pupil at a private school in Nyabohanse town, said she went to visit her biological father to get her school fees when he sexually assaulted.
 
According to distraught girl, her father, a police officer who worked with a senior politician in Migori County before being interdicted from police service, lured her into his bedroom and defiled her in broad daylight.
 
“I went to see him to collect my fee balance on instructions of my grandmother with whom I lived. She could not afford Sh13,890 which I owed the school so I went to my father who operates a pub in Nyabohanse town,” she told the Nation this week. 
 
“I was cleaning utensils when he came home that morning. He called me to his bedroom as he wanted me to do some shopping for breakfast. I was helpless as he pinned me on his bed and committed the act,” she said.
 
According to the minor, she rushed out of the house weeping and ran to Nyabohanse Police Post where she reported the incident.
 
“I reported the incident to a female police officer, who called my father and the area chief and tried to persuade me to forgive him,” she said.
 
At about 2pm, she was transferred to Isebania Police Station where she was placed in a cell for six days before she was taken to Nyayo Hospital, where she was tested and given a prescription.
 
She said while she was locked up, Officers allowed in her father to check on her, and in the process, he threatened her to drop the case.
 
“When we visited her on the same evening she was arrested, the officer declined to release her, saying the national flag at the station had already been lowered and we were not allowed to see her,” her grandmother told the Nation.
 
“All we need is justice for the minor. It is sad that the police, who ought to have protected her, conspired with the suspect to torment her further,” the girl’s grandmother said.
 
“The suspect, who should be in custody, walks scot-free and was accessing the girl freely as we were denied any chance to see her.”
 
It was also claimed that the girl's medical report and police statements were tampered with in other to destroy the case.
 
“The six-day detention was a plot to conceal possible evidence of rape. Even police records and the occurrence book entries were skewed,” the girl's guardian said.
 
The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji also confirmed that the case was closed “due to lack of evidence”.
 
In a letter dated November 5 and addressed to the OCS Isebania Police Station, Mr Martin Mwongera, a senior prosecution counsel, says the case should be terminated.
 
“… after perusing police files and statements, I find no sufficient evidence to charge the suspect with the said offence,” the letter reads in part.
 
Meanwhile, in a chat with the Nation, Kuria West police chief Bernard Muriuki and Migori Police Commander Celestino Nyaga said they attempted to take the suspect to Kehancha Law Courts twice on November 5 and 19 failed after the prosecution counsel cited lack of evidence.
 
He also said he was not aware the victim was held at Isebania Police Station for six days.
 

Trigger-happy police officer shoots motorist dead in Kano (photos)









A trigger-happy police officer attached to a Commercial Bank in Kano state has been accused of killing a man identified as Mus’ab Sammani, pictured above.

 

According to eyewitnesses, Mus'ab and a tricycle operator were engaged in a heated argument at Niger Avenue, by Mallam Kato Square, after the tricyclist brushed his car.

 

The accused police officer saw both men arguing and decided to settle their differences. He ordered Mus'ab to drive his car out of the road. When the officer thought the deceased was about to drive off, he corked his gun and threatened to shoot. Sadly, he fired a shot and the bullet peiced through the windscreen and hit the deceased on the neck. Mus'ab died on the spot.

 

He was rushed to the Mallam Aminu Teaching Hospital (AKTH), where he was pronounced dead.

 

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the state police command, DSP Abdullahi Haruna, said the officer involved has been arrested and investigation has since commenced into the matter.

Two persons have been confirmed dead in the pipeline explosion that rocked the Isher-Olofin axis of Lagos state today Thursday December 5th.

Court orders transfer of El-Zakzaky and wife from DSS custody to prison






Justice Gideon Kudafa of the Kaduna State High Court has ordered the transfer of embattled leader of Islamic Movement in Nigeria Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky and his wife Zeenat, from DSS custody to a correctional centre in the state.
 
The Kaduna High Court judge who presided over the trial of El-Zakzaky and his wife over allegations of culpable homicide, unlawful assembly, and disruption of the public peace, among other charges, said the transfer will enable an easy access by their lawyers and doctors. 
 
It was further learnt that the Islamic leader and his wife were not in court due to their deteriorated health conditions. The case was adjourned till February 6 for commencement of trial.

The House of Representatives has urged the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to penalize commercial banks that fail to convert all casual workers to permanent staff without delay.

The Green Chamber urged all commercial banks to convert all casual workers to permanent staff.

The resolutions followed the consideration of motion moved by Amobi Akintola (APC, Osun) during Wednesday’s plenary.

According to Akintola, most of the banks are raking in billions as profit but equally continue to casualize workers.

Akintola explained that “prior to the emergence of new generation banks in Nigeria, staff of banks were usually full time workers and entitled to series of benefits from the banks they worked for, including promotions, health packages, productivity, life insurance policies, housing allowances, wardrobe allowances, feeding allowances etc. which made banking jobs enviable work for all and sundry in the country;

“That with the advent of new generation banks in the country, so many things changed in the banking industry but despite all the challenges being faced by the new generation banks, the financial sector still remains one of the most viable sectors of the Nigerian economy with each of the banks having a minimum of twenty-five billion naira only (N25, 000,000,000) as its capital base.”

He stated further that “In 2017, Guaranty Trust Bank declared a profit before tax of one hundred and eighty-six billion naira only (N186,000,000,000) followed by Zenith Bank Plc, which in the same financial year declared a profit before tax of one hundred and seventy-three billion naira only (N173,000,000,000) while Access Bank Plc came third with a profit of eighty billion naira (N80,000,000,000) and by the end of that year, all the banks in Nigeria had declared jumbo profits, a situation that was repeated in 2018 when the banks made huge profits;

“Commissions and charges that banks had raked in as at September 30, 2019 were over seven hundred billion naira (N700,000,000,000), without considering money generated from loans, advances and other portfolio investments of the banks, evidencing the lucrative nature of banking business.”

The lawmaker linked uptick in fraud in the banking sector to the casualization of workers in the sector.

“Despite the huge profits being made by commercial banks, they still casualize most of their core operational staff, as (90) percent of bank workers are casual staff, a development that is an act of exploitation of the unemployed youths;

“Core operations of banks like tellering customer service, relationship management, marketing, business development, internal controls etc are being handled by contract staff who are not entitled to promotion, health care services, utility allowances, productivity etc, thus making them to be virtual slaves within the banking sector as six months ago, Eco Bank laid off over a thousand casual staff;

“The practice of casualization of staff is causing a rise in fraud rate perpetrated by staff and also psychological trauma among those set of staff to the extent that a contract staff committed suicide in 2010 when he was retrenched by WEMA Bank without any compensation and in another incidence few days ago, during a robbery attack in Ekiti State on Thursday November 21, 2019, the Police explained how a CCTV footage exposed a bank staff involved in the robbery operation.”

The House, therefore, mandated the Committee on Banking and Currency to interface with commercial banks on the need to stop casualization of their core operational staff and also mandated the Committee on Legislative Compliance to ensure compliance.

Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu of the Federal High Court, Abuja, has ordered the Department of State Services to release human rights activists, Omoyele Sowore and Olawale Bakare, within the next 24 hours.  

 

The judge also ordered the DSS to pay the sum of N100, 000 to Sowore for refusing to release him on bail despite two court orders to that effect.  

 

The court also adjourned the trial of the case brought against them by the Nigerian Government till December 6th for continuation.

Croatian police deport Nigerian table tennis players with valid visas to Bosnia after they suspected them as 'illegal immigrants'



                                 


Police in Croatia have deported two Nigerian table-tennis players, Abie Uchenna Alexandra and Kenneth Chinedu to Bosnia and Herzegovina, claiming both men were in the country illegally, even though they both arrived in Croatia with valid visas.



 According to Hina, the government-owned national news agency, Alexandra and  Chinedu, students from Owerri Technical University in Nigeria, arrived in Zagreb the capital of Croatia on November 12 to participate in the sport's World University Championships in Pula.
 
                                         
 
After the tournament ended two weeks ago, both Nigerians traveled from Pula to Zagreb, and settled into a hostel on November 16 then decided to check out the city as tourists since they were scheduled to fly back to Nigeria through Istanbul on November 18.


The pair were then stopped and arrested by police as they got off a train because they were not carrying their documents with them..They were then put in a van and taken to the Bosnia border and then dumped near a forest area.

"They took us to the police station. We tried to explain who we were and that we had left our documents in the hostel. They didn't pay attention to what we were saying," said Chinedu.


"I refused to go into the woods," said Chinedu. "The officer told me he would shoot me if I didn't move."


After being chased by police, they reached the Miral Camp near Velika Kladusa in Bosnia. The students complained to representatives of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), which runs the Miral Camp, and it was confirmed that the students had been staying in Croatia with legal visas.


Alberto Tanghetti, a representative of the Inter-University Sports Committee and the organiser of the competition in Pula, confirmed the validity of the Nigerian's stay in Croatia.

"The two students were participating in the competition, they had a Croatian visa, return plane tickets from Zagreb to Istanbul and from Istanbul to Lagos," Tanghetti said to Al Jazeera.

Nigerian Nobel Laureate, Prof Wole Soyinka has condemned the continous detention of #RevolutioNow convener Omoyele Sowore, even after perfecting his bail conditions. 
 
Soyinka who wondered if Sowore is Miyetti Allah in his open letter, also lashed out at Nigerian agencies that actually think to inhibit social revolution by fastening on the alarmist association of the word ‘revolution’.
 
In the open letter titled 'Between thuggery and state disobedience’, the nobel laureate accused the Buhari-led administration of treating the judiciary with disdain. He also alleged that the degree of cynicism in the conduct of State Security agencies in the present administration has attained a level of consistency that is surpassed by only one other previous government.

I have no hesitation in admitting that I have a  personal, formative interest in the health of the Nigerian judiciary, deeper perhaps than the average Nigerian. At a critical junction in the life of this writer, a judge resolved to give primacy to the call of conscience, affirm his professional integrity and defend the supremacy of law in defiance of state interference.
He refused to bow to external pressure in adjudicating a case whose conclusion, had this accused been found guilty as charged, would have been life imprisonment. That individual, the late Justice Kayode Eso, has narrated the event in his autobiography – The Mystery Gunman with his noted wit and judicial poise.
The Deputy Premier of the then Western region of Nigeria had summoned the judge to his residence, lectured him on his duty to protect the interests of the government against the accused. Justice Kayode listened politely, re-affirmed his commitment to the rule of law, and took his leave.
It would be most surprising if my own brush with the law has not crossed my mind since the predicament of Omoyele Sowole, journalist and former presidential candidate began.
The Nigerian judiciary was not thereby, nor is today a model of perfection.
Nonetheless, exemplars such as Justice Esho have succeeded in creating, in some of us, an exceptional respect for the Bench, instilled a conviction that the law, despite its lapses, demands respect, autonomy, and obedience.
Much of the judiciary across the continent remains constantly under siege – Nigeria is no exception. Needless to say, it often strikes me that the “learned brotherhood” could do more to protect, and assert itself. Apart from the obvious and numerous scandals of moral deficit that require constant internal purgation, there are instances where it does fail to protect itself even from putative and/or illegal power.
Take the assassination of the Minister of Justice and Attorney-General, Bola Ige on his way to a UN appointment. The presiding judge on that case cried out against unseemly interference from “ least expected quarters”.
He kept a diary of coded names and times, two pages of which came into my possession. His cries petered out in the void. Justice Abass, feeling vulnerable and isolated, bowed out of the case. The judiciary lamely acquiesced, certainly with a huge sigh of relief in some sectors. A robust opportunity lost to burnish the image of the law. I was left aghast.

Temperamental Ekiti state Governor-elect, Ayodele Fayose, slapped a court judge today for being rude to him and then ordered his thugs to beat him further.
The action of Fayose and his thugs triggered some pandemonium in the court, with judicial workers and others running into safety. The sitting of the Ekiti State Governorship Election petition Tribunal could also not hold.
Immediately, thugs numbering about 20 pounced on Justice Adeyeye, beat him up and tore his clothes, while his co-workers scampered and shouted for help.
Following the development, judicial workers hurriedly shut down the court premises thereby preventing any court proceeding for hours before the police fired tear gas canisters to disperse the hoodlums.
For a week, two weeks, then forever, `I waited to see what would be the response of the judiciary. There came none. Naively, I thought, surely, this institution will rise and defend its very existence through some form of action, even if merely symbolic. Not a squeak. Not even after that governor left office and thereby lost his immunity. What to me appeared to be the collapse, not just of a pillar, but of the edifice of human culture, appeared to be no more than a blip on the judicial template.
There are of course more effective ways of degrading a judiciary than merely brutalizing a judge, and leaving his judicial robes in tatters. One of the most effective, increasingly optimized in Nigeria, is simply by not only ignoring, but treating its orders with disdain, encouraging its agencies to trot out cynical excuses for disobedience while laughing all the way to the citadel of power.
In that regard, there does appear to be an undeclared contest among succeeding governments, intensified since the return of the nation to a civilian government in 1999 for placement in the Guinness Book of Records as the most notorious Scofflaw in the field of democratic pretensions. Or could it be an anticipation of a proposal I made at the Athens Democracy Forum some months ago, calling for an annual award – such as an Order of Demerit – for such an achiever?
Perhaps we have finally attained maximum saturation, and there is no need for any further record keeping. It is extremely difficult to imagine a further lowering of the bar of disdain for the law than we have witnessed under the present regime. The degree of cynicism in the conduct of State Security agencies has attained a level of consistency that is surpassed by only one other previous government – but it is a close call. Not only does the security agency refuse to obey a court order to release a suspect after fulfilling his bail conditions, but that agency also manufactures one childish pretext after another, including a claim that no one has shown up to receive the detainee.
“His sureties have yet to show up to collect him”, declared the DSS, prime candidate for a special featuring in my “Interventions” series, periodically dedicated to the theme of The Republic of Liars. Are we speaking here of a full-grown adult, a journalist and former presidential aspirant, or an overnight bag awaiting the rightful claimant in a LOST AND FOUND department?
The nation continues to undergo the chagrin of having the rug pulled from under her feet while waiting on the long queue for judicial redress against the strong-arm culture of state, as well as unlisted power interests.

Is Sowore Myetti Allah? As for those agencies that actually think to inhibit social revolution by fastening on the alarmist association of the word ‘revolution’, half the citizens of this nation should be in permanent detention. From pulpit to the minaret, from clinic to fish market, from student club to motor park, the wish for a drastic transformation of this nation is staple discourse.
Perhaps we should begin with its application to that institution whose decisions affect both society and individuals with such finality, for good or ill – the judiciary.

Breaking: Court finds Orji Uzor Kalu guilty of N7.65bn fraud






Justice Mohammed Idris of the Federal High Court in Lagos has found former Abia State Governor cum Senator, Orji Uzor Kalu, and two others guilty of N7.65bn fraud.
 
Kalu’s co-defendants are his firm, Slok Nigeria Limited and Udeh Udeogu, who was Director of Finance and Accounts at the Abia State Government House during Kalu’s tenure as governor.
 
In an amended 39 counts charged filed before the court, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, accused the former governor and his co-defendants of conspiring and diverting N7.65bn from the coffers of the state when he held sway as Governor of the state between 1999 and 2007.
 
EFCC in the court papers, alleged that Kalu, used his company, Slok Nigeria Limited's account to keep a total of  N7,197,871,208.7 withdrawn from the treasury of the Abia State Government and was converted into several bank drafts before they were paid into the said company’s account.
 
EFCC's counsel, Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), told the court that the former governor violated Section 17© of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2004, and was liable to be punished under Section 16 of the same Act.
 
Apart from the N7.1bn,  the ex-governor and the other defendants were also accused of receiving a total of N460m allegedly stolen from the Abia State Government treasury between July and December 2002.
 
The prosecutor said they breached Section 427 of the Criminal Code Act, Cap 77, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 1990.
 
The judgement in the case is still ongoing.

In my study of the Word, I’ve read this verse of scripture above many times. On one occasion, I said, “Lord Jesus, why did you have to pray for Simon?

Aren’t you God? Why didn’t you just change him?”

Why didn’t Jesus just prophesy to Simon and say, “Your faith will not fail”? Rather, He said, “I have prayed for you.” That’s because when you pray for someone, you can only do so in hope. So, Jesus prayed in hope for Peter.

This is so instructive. From time to time, the Lord opens our eyes to see some of our brothers and sisters in the Lord that we need to intercede for, to get them over to the place where we believe they ought to be. It’s not an exclusive responsibility of the Pastor. It’s something the Lord expects of you: that ingredient of mindful, deep prayer of intercession for others, not only for the lost but also for the one who’s already in the Lord but may be going astray.


If the Master would pray for Peter, how much more are we required to pray for our brothers and sisters that their faith fail not. Don’t watch them go down or criticise them for their mistakes. Stand in the gap for them.

Also, isn’t it interesting that Jesus didn’t say, “Simon, I have prayed for you that Satan touch you not”? He didn’t pray that Satan wouldn’t attack him. It’s not about how bad the situation is; it’s not about how severe the sickness is; it’s not about how terrible the pain is; it’s about your faith being strong enough to prevail. That’s what matters.

So, when you see Christians who are being attacked by the devil in whatever way, whether by sin, sickness or lack, it’s part of your priestly ministry to pray for them that their faith doesn’t fail, irrespective of the situation they’re in.

PRAYER

Precious Father, I thank you for the privilege to stand in the gap for Christians whose faith may be under attack today; their faith prevails, as they’re strengthened with might by your Spirit in their inner man to remain steadfast and immoveable, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Adewale's plea was taken by the Chief Magistrate Mr Abdulhamid Lawal. The Chief Magistrate ordered that the case file be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice, before adjourning the case till December 18 for mention.

After she started the position back in August, the Human Resources department found out she had hired her brother, despite him lacking any qualifications for the job.
 
The court was told this was not her first time doing something like this. She allegedly used resumes with false information to obtain employment at two companies in 2012 and 2014.
 

 
During the sentencing, Judge Michael Boylan said the charges were serious, and there was an element of "planning in her deceitful conduct."
 
Boylan said: "You fraudulently obtained employment for which you were paid a large salary and in the course of which you may have had access to sensitive material."
 
Theriault’s defense claims she has serious mental health issues, and previously told the court that she was "deeply ashamed and embarrassed" by what she had done.

Ms Nduku's mother, Elizabeth Mutuku, was nearby when the accident happened and according to her "I saw her struggling in the water and I tried to save her. I called out to her 'Anna, Anna!'. I wanted to throw her a stick to try and pull her out. But the river was swollen and she was being tossed and tossed around and then it swept her away."
