Daughter of American President, Ivanka Trump, at the 74th UNGA in New York on Monday.

The arrival of Ivanka Trump at the ongoing 74th UNGA momentarily shifted attention from long speeches and contentious issues as the American First Daughter’s thin blue blouse got scrutinizing looks.

The 37-year-old mother of three probably offered more than she intended to, as the outline of her nipples could be seen through her blue shirt.

Twitter has since taken over the discussion, as people from all over the globe discuss the phenomenal appearance.

However, several users on Twitter were outraged at how brazenly Ivanka went seemingly braless at the global event with high-profile world leaders. That said, the eldest daughter of President Trump, in her role as Senior Adviser to the President of the United States, is constantly attending state events that require her to dress up formally.

As the Department of State Services continues to detain human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, a social crusader, Deji Adeyanju, has accused the DSS Director General, Yusuf Bichi, of promoting a legacy of impunity by refusing to release Sowore.

Adeyanju said the DSS violated section 35 (1,2,&3 ) of the Nigerian constitution, which stated that every person shall be entitled to his personal liberty and no person shall be deprived of such liberty, by refusing to set Sowore free.

Quote:He said, "It is unfortunate that they are setting a bad precedent for generation to come and what is more important is tomorrow.
The Director General of DSS will not be there forever, another person will come and the person will come and inherit the legacy of Impunity."

Adamawa doctor re-arraigned for allegedly removing patient's kidneys

The removal of two kidneys from one Mr. Isa Hamma (now deceased), has led to the re-arraignment of an Adamawa based doctor Dr. Yakubu Hassan Koji before the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) tribunal which sat today September 24.

The medical doctor who performed the surgical process on his patient without telling him the risk involved, was arraigned on a twelve-count charge which cenetered on negligence of duty.

Quote:“That you, Dr. Yakubu Hassan Koji, registered medical practitioner and practicing as such , between 25th June and 7th July, 2016 or thereabouts at Jimeta Clinic and Maternity, Jimeta, Adamawa State, were negligent when you undertook a surgical operation on one Isa Hamma and remove an organ you could not identify and by the said fact, conducted yourself infamously in a professional respect contrary to Rules 29.4f of the Code of Medical Ethics in Nigeria, 2008 Edition, and punishable under section 16 (1) (a) of the Medical and Dental Practitioners’ Act CAP M8 LFN 2004 (as amended)" one of the charges read.

Dr. Yakubu pleaded not guilty to the 12 count charge even though he pleaded guilty to one or two of the charges earlier. The Prosecution Counsel, Dr. Musa A. Aliyu while reacting to the "Not Guilty" plea by the Adamawa based doctor, opposed the plea bargain the defence counsel B. E Olowonubi opted for. According to him, a plea bargain is only possible when a defendant pleads guilty to charges against him.

Quote:“We remember that this respondent had earlier pleaded guilty to a count or two; that would have been the proper pedestal to build a leniency of any punishment that can be meted to him.
“But he, after he has taken his plea, has taken a step to say ‘I am not guilty’, what are you bargaining again? Plea bargain will only result in – I am guilty.
“This is a tribunal established by law, and the proceedings are guided by law. In criminal crime, in the new development there are issues of plea bargain which the administration of criminal justice have introduced into our criminal justice system, which is accepted in the court.
“But to the best of our knowledge Mr. Chairman, there is no provision either in the medical ethics of Nigeria or in the Medical and Dental Practitioners’ Act, which empower the prosecution or the Medical and Dental investigation panel to enter into any bargain with somebody it has investigated and found that he has a case to answer, as a result of which a charge is proffered against him" he said.

Chairman of the tribunal, Prof. Abba Hassan told everyone present at the tribunal proceeding that Dr. Yakubu had pleaded guilty earlier to the charges but changed his plea after the tribunal gave him time to get a counsel.

Quote:“The issue is the removal of functional kidneys in an individual, which has led to the death of the patient. Even if you are going to do a plea bargain, the important thing which you raise is not our law now.
“In the review of the Act, if this comes in, but as far as I am concerned, the members of the tribunal have no option than to go ahead with the prosecution because the case is an issue of somebody who lost both of the organs and the patient is dead. It is only fair to the complainants that we conclude this case to a surgical conclusion,” he said.

Yakubu had treated Isa at his Jimeta clinic for stomach complications, but ended up operating the victim on July 8, 2016. He allegedly removing his kidney in the process. Three days after the operation, it was gathered that Isa could not urinate.

The complications further degenerated with the face and legs of the victim becoming swollen which prompted the family to return to the accused doctor who later referred them to the Federal Medical Centre in Gombe. It was at the Gombe hospital that medical officials working with the Federal Medical Centre revealed that Isa’s kidney had been “removed.”

The tribunal is expected to continue the trial on Wednesday September 25, and also to pass its judgement.

Fake Jumia agent arrested in Benin

A fake Jumia agent identified as 23-year-old Edoboryi Osaruese Leerees has been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC in Benin, Edo state capital.

Edoboryi was arrested after a lady made a complaint of she and her friend paying over One Million Naira (N1,000,000) for the supply of goods they ordered from his page online but never got.

Quote:"Leerees was arrested following a petition by a lady who claimed to have paid him over One Million Naira (N1,000,000) for the supply of goods which she and her friends ordered from his page online but never got the items.
According to the lady, Leerees sent her a message on WhatsApp and told her he was an agent of Jumia and pledged with her to help him market his products which were on sales at 40% discount.
When the lady saw how attractive the prices were, she and her two friends credited his accounts with the sum of One Million Naira (N1,000,000) and waited for the delivery of their goods.
However, when days elapsed and the goods were not forthcoming, she went to Jumia office to make enquiry and discovered that Leerees was not an agent but a fraud and then decided to petition the EFCC after he refused to refund her money" the statement read in part.

The suspect operates by using his social media platforms to advertise goods which are purportedly on promo at cheaper prices as a Jumia agent. The adverts appear genuine and makes unsuspecting social media users transfers money to him for goods they will never get.

Further investigation revealed that he is an internet fraudster that has defrauded several people with the name Vin Diesel and Mark Sinclair. He has reportedly made useful statement and would be charged to court soon.

Quote:"Eight people were slightly injured in the earthquake," President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an told reporters at Istanbul's Atatürk Airport returning from his visit to the UN General Assembly in New York.
"According to AFAD, the magnitude of the earthquake is 5.8 and 28 aftershocks are recorded so far," Erdo?an said.

Conman posing as ‘NNPC Finance chief’ remanded in prison

A man posing as the ‘NNPC group managing director, finance’, Nuhu Ibrahim Shuaibu a.k.a Ishaku Abdulrazak has been docked in Kaduna State for fraud.

Shuaibu was arraigned by EFCC on Wednesday, Spetember 25th before Justice P. Mallong of the Federal High Court, charged with impersonation and fraud to the tune of N65,150,000.

Shuaibu’s road to the dock began sometime in 2017, when he introduced himself as NNPC’s Group Managing Director, Finance and Accounts to a businessman, Mallam Faisal Safiyanu, whom he promised to assist in the procurement of between 2,000mt to 2,500mt of petroleum products.

Over a period, the plaintiff paid N65,150,000 to the defendant in three instalments. After the payments, all efforts by the victim to get the defendant supply the promised petroleum products proved abortive.

Quote:One of the counts reads: “That you Nuhu Ibrahim Shuaibu ( a.k.a Ishaku Abdulrazak) of No 1, Khaleesa Close Millennium City Kaduna, between November 2017 and May 2018 in Kaduna, within the judicial division of this honourable court with intent to defraud, did obtain the total sum of N65,150,000 (Sixty-five Million, One Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira) from one Faisal Safiyanu under the pretence that you will supply him with petroleum products which you knew to be false and you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 1(1)(a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offence Act, 2006 and punishable under Section 1(3) of the same Act.”
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge, prompting the prosecution counsel, M. Lawal to pray the court for a commencement date of trial and for the defendant to be remanded in prison custody pending trial.

Counsel to the defendant, Sule Shuaibu, however, prayed the court to grant his client bail to enable him prepare for his trial-a prayer that was rejected by the prosecution, who feared the defendant would jump bail.

Justice Mallong ordered the accused to be remanded in prison custody and fixed September 30 for the hearing of the bail application.

Update: Journalist, Agba Jalingo remanded in prison after being charged for terrorism, treasonable felony and attempt to topple the Cross River State government

Justice Simon Amobeda of the Federal High Court sitting in Calabar, on Wednesday ruled that journalist and activist, Agba Jalingo, of Cross River Watch, be remanded in prison.

Jalingo who had spent 33 days in police detention was arraigned after being charged for terrorism, treasonable felony and attempt to topple the Cross River State government.

The Presiding Judge said he had no time to look at the bail document.  He said that the counter affidavit by the prosecution filed in response to the motion for bail by the defendant’s counsel was added to the file on Wednesday morning and that he had not had time to look at it. He said that he perused the file on Tuesday night and did not see the counter affidavit.

The prosecution counsel, Mr. Denis Terhemba, a Deputy Superintendent of Police claimed the counter affidavit was filed on September 18, 2019 but Jalingo’s counsel, Mr. Attah Ochinke said he was served shortly before the court began sitting.

However, after a brief discussion with the Clerk of the Court who whispered a few words to him, Justice Amobeda ruled that Jalingo be remanded at the Afokang prison in Calabar. He adjourned the case to Thursday, September 26, 2019.

Jalingo was arrested in his Lagos residence on August 22, 2019, following an invitation by the Police Command in Cross River State over a petition that an article he wrote on the State’s Microfinance bank had affected its business negatively.

Jalingo had, in the article, queried the whereabouts of the N500 million approved and released by the Cross River State government for the floating of the bank.

Reacting to the ruling of the court, Mr. Ochinke who described the charges as “sensational,” also averred “we have looked at the proof of evidence and we know that they have no base.

Quote:“We had an application for him to be admitted in to bail, but because the counter affidavit was only brought to the attention of the Court today, the Court graciously granted us to come back tomorrow for the argument on the application of the bail.
“We hope that by tomorrow, the court will give a considered opinion on it and Agba will be admitted to bail.”
The prosecution counsel, Mr. Denis Terhemba, a Deputy Superintendent of Police said he was not at liberty to discuss the matter with the press;
Quote:“The fact is that the matter as it is, is a matter that is before the Federal High Court 2 here in Calabar.
The fact and whatever transpired in Court, I cannot reveal to you unless you go to the registrar of the Court, get the details from the registrar and he will give you exactly what transpired in Court,” Terhemba said.

Buhari’s off-the-Point answers at UNGA confirms he is not educated and doesn't have a WAEC certificate- PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says that President Buhari’s off-the-point answer to questions at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) interactive session is a further confirmation that he lacks the prerequisite education to hold office as President.

In a statement released by its spokesperson, Kola Ologbondiyan, the party says that President Buhari’s off-the-point speech on climate change, as response to direct and simple question on his plan for the youth, confirms Mr. President’s personal inability to understand and effectively communicate in English language as required by Section 318 (iii) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

PDP in the statement said President Buhari’s failure to comprehend the question put to him and respond accordingly trashes his claims of attending education to school certificate level and possessing a WAEC certificate, and further brings to light the reasons for his inability to attach any educational certificate as required in INEC form CF001.

The party states that it was obvious to all that because of President Buhari’s inability to understand and communicate in English language (as required by the constitution), he failed to distinguish the fact that the text already prepared for him by his handlers had no correlation with question put to him at the UN.

Quote:''Nigerians can now see why the Buhari administration has remained miserably incompetent, lacking in tact and desired capacity to manage the affairs of a nation as complex, demanding and multifarious like Nigeria.

Moreover, it has also exposed why the Buhari Presidency overtly lacks the intellect and confidence to engage other world leaders, a situation that has led to the diminishing of the integrity of our nation in the international arena, in addition to the dearth in foreign direct investment under his watch.

The PDP therefore cautions the Presidency over its press statement in which it poured insults on Nigerians for commenting on President Buhari’s embarrassing outing at the UN.

Instead of insulting Nigerians, the Presidency should apologize to our citizens over the embarrassments constantly brought to our nation by President Buhari'' he said

Toddler banned from attending nursery because deformed skull ‘would scare other children’

A little girl was banned from a nursery school because her deformed skull could frighten other children.

Sofya Zakharova, 2, was born with a deformed skull and her parents were told she should get surgery before applying for a place in a nursery.

Operations for Sofya have been delayed and experts have warned that unless she mixes with other children her development will be affected.

The child's parents Svetlana and Rasul, who live in the village of Alatany in Bashkortostan, a federal region of Russia, have revealed how their daughter was discriminated against because of her peculiar features.

Asides her deformed skull, Sofya's fingers and toes are also fused together. It is not currently known what condition the little girl has.

Narrating how Sofya was discriminated against by schools, the mother said she was told: "First, you need to arrange an operation so she can go to nursery school like an ordinary child."

Sofya’s grandfather Sergei Mikhailov said: "They have such a catastrophe here. They said they would do the operation, but then were silent about this."

The family said that they do not get any disability benefits for Sofya.

Educational psychologist Ekaterina Belan said: "The sooner she gets the experience of interactions, the easier it will be for her to cope with the conditions in which she lives and grows. The more interactions she gets, the easier it will be for her to accept herself for who she is."

Prosecutors have now become involved and are looking into why doctors have not yet operated on Sofya and the nursery for refusing to accept her.

As Vice President You Can’t Waive Your Immunity, Lawyer Tells Osinbajo
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion
Posted by: Edoman - 09-26-2019, 08:41 PM - No Replies

Quote:Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, has been told that he lacks the power to waive the constitutional immunity which he enjoys as privilege attached to his office.

Constitutionally, legal actions cannot be instituted against the president, his vice, state governors alongside their deputy. This is one of the rights they are entitled to for being in office.

Although those holding the above-mentioned positions can be probed, they, however, cannot be prosecuted while in office.

Mr Osinbajo while reacting to corruption allegations levelled against him, stated his readiness to waive away his immunity and allow for proper investigation into the assertion.

Some Nigerians are opining that the vice president lacks power to do so. One of them, a legal practitioner, has said the number two citizen cannot constitutionally waive his immunity while still in office.

“Based on the extant constitutional regime, the Vice President Prof. Osinbajo, cannot waive his immunity,” said Inibehe Effiong.

The lawyer quoted some legal judgement to back up his claim.

“The Supreme Court decided in 2001 in the case of Tinubu v. I. M. B. Securities Plc that the constitutional immunity under Section 308 of the Constitution cannot be waived.

“In the said Tinubu’s case, former governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu decided to waive his immunity to defend a civil claim initiated against him. The Supreme Court barred the then gov of Lagos State from proceeding with the suit,” the lawyer added.

Mr Effiong however said the vice president has the right to sue for defamation of character.

“While legal proceedings cannot be initiated against him, the Courts have decided in several cases that immunity does not prevent the beneficiaries from suing for defamation of character. In other words, Prof. Osinbajo can sue but cannot be sued.

“This was the position taken by the Supreme Court in 2007 in the case of Global Excellence Communications Ltd. V. Donald Duke.

“Finally, I wish to state that the immunity under Section 308 of the Constitution does not extern to criminal investigation by law enforcement agencies. This was the position taken by the Supreme Court in 2002 in the celebrated case of Chief Gani Fawehinmi v. IGP.

“Provided the investigation does not result in the arrest or detention of the VP or compelling his appearance, he can be investigated,” he added.

The lawyer said he views the decision of the vice president to waive his immunity as political.

“Osinbajo’s statement is political. Immunity does not cover investigation, therefore the question of waiver does not arise in the circumstance,” Effiong said.

Senator Orji Kalu, representing Abia North at the National Assembly, has called for the closure of some government parastatals, Igbere TV reports.

Igbere TV reports that Mr. Kalu, a former governor of Abia State, made the call on Thursday during plenary.

He said the shutdown was necessary because of the proliferation of parastatals.

According to Kalu, Nigeria has over 1,000 parastatals and more are still being created.

“This Senate should focus on security and agriculture. We need to pay attention to small scale industry. This Senate should shut down some parastatals,” he said.

“We have over 1,000 parastatals and we are creating more. We should have small government and big enterprise so we can be able to move forward.”

Osinbajo Must Defend Allegations Against Jonathan, Saraki - Timi Frank
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion
Posted by: Edoman - 09-26-2019, 05:13 PM - Replies (1)

A political activist and former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Comrade Timi Frank, has said that now that the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has sued him, it is time for the RCCG's pastor to prove several allegations he made against former President Goodluck Jonathan and former Senate President Bukola Saraki, among others.

Frank told the Vice President that he won't be intimidated by going to court, saying the VP has record of intimidating the media, Civil Societies and social crusaders.

Reacting through a statement on Thursday to the declaration by Osinbajo that he would waive his immunity to pursue a libel case against him, Frank asked "why didn’t he (Osinbajo) do the same when the issue of alleged misappropriation of 5.8bn contract at NEMA came up?

"Why didn’t he sue the wife of the President when she alleged that the Social Investment Programme of this administration has failed. As one who oversees that, I would have expected him to sue the wife of the president or waive his immunity for the relevant graft agencies to investigate him.

"More recently, it was alledged by the spokesperson of the foremost anti corruption agency in Nigeria that the same N-SIP is riddled with corruption. I wonder why he’s not suing EFCC or the spokesperson."

While recalling some of the allegations Osinbajo made against some other public officials before, Frank said: "Osinbajo should be informed that his statements against the likes of former President Goodluck Jonathan and Sen. Bukola Saraki will also be used as evidence against him once he enters the dock.

"It is worthy to note that it is in the character of Prof. Yemi Osinbajo to intimidate Nigerians, media houses and civil societies by court processes. He rushed to court and filled a motion ex-parte in 2015 against AIT and NTA not to air a documentary of him. Another case in hand was when Prof. Osinbajo through his solicitors asked google to remove/ suspend a video published by Roots TV from YouTube as it was termed ‘defamatory publication’. Why does he not want Nigerians to scrutinize his person? Is he hiding anything? Has he forgotten he is holding a public office?

"If I were Pastor Osinbajo, what would bother me at this point would be the numerous allegations from within as well as manifest plot against him because of his alleged financial dealings in some of the agencies under him."

On the statement that he was ready to waive his immunity, the political activist said: "As heartwarming as Prof. Osinbajo offer to waive his constitutional immunity is, it is really not his to waive. The immunity from prosecution applies to him as long as he remains the Vice President.

If he is certain that the allegations levied against him from all quarters in recent times are false, then he can choose to resign from office to challenge me and others with libel suit. This is against the background that as a sitting Vice President, he is likely to interfere in the judicial process as well as use public funds.

"I am a social crusader and all I have done all my life is to fight for the common man and no amount of intimidation and blackmail will stop me. Prof. Osinbajo is out solely to intimidate the media and civil society groups but I can assure him that I can not easily be intimidated. He knows the people fighting him and giving him out. What should bother him is his associate that have betrayed him."

Mr Vice President, give us a break, resign and stop intimidating us!

Signed:
Comrade Timi Frank
Political Activist

South Korean Doctor Performs Abortion On The Wrong Woman

Medical errors: A doctor in South Korea performs abortion on the wrong woman due to mix-up of medical charts

The Police have launched an investigation in South Korea, after a doctor performed an abortion by mistake.

Errors arose from mix-up of medical records

On August 7, a pregnant patient with a 6-week-old fetus had gone to a clinic in district of Gangseo, in the country’s capital Seoul, according to the Gangseo police. At the clinic, a mix-up in medical charts and failure to check her identity led to the mistaken abortion.

Findings of Police investigations

The doctor and nurse in charge are under investigation and the case will soon be sent to the prosecutor’s office, police told CNN.
“The doctor and nurse have acknowledged their fault,” a police official said. They are now being charged for negligence resulting in bodily harm.

How the mistake happened

According to South Korean news agency Yonhap, the patient was supposed to receive a nutritional shot at the clinic. The nurse had allegedly injected her with anesthesia without confirming her identity, and the doctor had performed the abortion without checking her identity either, Yonhap reported. The patient had been unaware of the procedure. The doctor carried out the abortion on the wrong woman, an error he could have avoided if he had cross-checked.

Abortion still illegal in South Korea

However, under existing laws, the practice remains illegal and is technically punishable by up to a year in prison. Exceptions are granted in cases where the parents have hereditary diseases, the pregnancy is due to rape or incest, or the fetus is threatening the life of the mother. Abortion laws in South korea is restrictive.

Court moves to liberalize abortion laws

South Korea moved to legalize abortion in April this year, with the country’s constitutional court ruling that lawmakers must revise existing laws by December 31, 2020.

More than 50, 000 women terminated their pregnacies last year

An estimated 50,000 abortions were carried out in South Korea last year, according to the country’s Health Ministry. Actual numbers may be much higher, since the criminalization of the practice distorted reporting of it.

Asif Ali is being hailed for his courage after he stood his ground and fought off four armed robbers with his bare hands in his own doorway during a terrifying raid on his home in Rochdale.

He landed a flurry of blows on the masked gang before chasing them into the garden with a pair of kitchen knives.

The estate agent said 'instinct kicked in' when he was confronted by a man dressed head-to-toe in black standing in the hallway of his Rochdale home.

CCTV shows Mr Ali, 35, landing several punches on the man, before also taking on his two accomplices who followed him into the house.

After being forced into the garden, one of the men threatened to kill Mr Ali before going back inside Ali's house and arming himself with what is thought to be a screwdriver.

But Mr Ali ran to the kitchen, grabbed two knives and chased them outside once more.

Mr Ali said his first thought was to protect his wife Charlotte, 30, who was upstairs in bed when the raid took place.

He said: "I was on a business call when I heard the dogs barking really aggresively.

"I went to see what was going on and there was someone standing there dressed head-to-toe in black. He threw a punch at me and we started to fight.

"I didn't know what I was doing. Instinct just kicked in - I just trying to get him out of the house.

"A second man came in and I thought he was trying to get upstairs where my wife was. I didn't want them anywhere near my wife.

"I got them outside, but they were pulling at the door, then one of them pulled out what looked like a knife, but the police think it might have been a screwdriver.

"He said 'I'm going to kill you'. He started to walk back towards me. I ran back inside and grabbed a couple of kitchen knives and chased them back out."

Mr Ali released the CCTV footage in order to catch the robbers and offered £5000 to anyone with information.

Elderly woman admits to killing her grandson because she feared no one will take care of him when she dies

An elderly woman has admitted to killing her own grandson for fear that he will be left alone with no one to take care ogf him when she dies.

Lillian Parks, 87, told authorities that she gave her disabled grandson Joel Parks, 30, a fatal dose of drugs, ABC News reports. She said she did it because she fears she is near her death and she felt like no one else could care for him when she's gone.

Joel lived with his grandmother on the weekends, and at a group home during the week, as he was unable to take care of himself. His sister, went to check on him at their grandmother's apartment on Sunday when she discovered his body.

It was unclear how long Joel had been deceased before his body was discovered. However, investigators are currently waiting for the toxicology report to reveal the exact substances that killed him.

A police spokesperson said during a news conference on Tuesday, September 24, that Bradenton police detectives took the grandmother into protective custody Sunday for evaluation and medical treatment.

She will more than likely be charged with second-degree murder once she's released from a doctor's care.

The spokesperson for the police department said: "This is a difficult case for our detectives. Partly, we feel bad for an individual who feels that the only option is to take another human being’s life because you’re so worried about their care after you’re gone. On the other hand, this was a process that was thought out, it was planned, and she took a human life."

According to the Bradenton Herald, Joel’s father is dead and his mother has been estranged.

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo has written a petition to Google Nigeria, demanding a removal of a video shared on the YouTube channel of Roots TV.

The Vice President in the petition written on his behalf by Femi Atoyebi & Co, solicitors, described the video as defamatory. Osinbajo also stated that he will be seeking a legal redress if the video is not removed.

Quote:“It is our understanding that you have provided a platform through which an account holder named RootsTV Nigeria, an online news platform that is available through this link… is able to continuously broadcast defamatory contents,” the letter read.
“In the broadcast published on the accounts of RootsTV Nigeria on September 20, 2019, the following incorrect statements and untruths were made:
“a. Our Client was stacking up public funds from agencies directly under his supervision, with a strong insinuation that the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) was the principal organ by which the alleged fraud was perpetrated.
“b. Our Client was unable to explain the alleged imbalance and discrepancies on the account of the FIRS on the interrogation of the Chief of Staff to the President, Mr Abba Kyari.
“c. Our Client was unable to explain the alleged failed disbursement to all beneficiaries under the Social Investment Programme of the Federal Government in Adamawa State.
“Our Client, therefore, demands that you immediately remove and/or suspend the publication/broadcast of the defamatory publication on the account of RootsTV Nigeria on the platform of YouTube.”

NSE lifts suspension on Niger Insurance, Guinea Insurance

[url=https://thenationonlineng.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/NSE.jpg]

AUTHORITIES at the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) on Wednesday lifted suspension placed on trading on the shares of Niger Insurance Plc and Guinea Insurance Plc after the two insurers submitted their audited report and accounts.

The NSE had in July 2019 suspended trading on the two insurance companies alongside nine other companies for failing to adhere to best corporate governance and extant post-listing requirements that make it mandatory for quoted companies to submit their financial statements within stipulated timelines.

Post-listing rules at the NSE require quoted companies to submit their audited earnings reports, not later than 90 calendar days after the expiration of the period. The rules also require quoted companies to submit interim report not later than 30 calendar days after the end of the relevant period.

Not less than 83 per cent of quoted companies use the 12-month Gregorian calendar year as their business year. The business year thus terminates on December 31. While March 31 is usually the deadline for submission of annual report for companies with Gregorian calendar business year, the deadline for the quarterly report is a month after the quarter.

The NSE stated that Niger Insurance and Guinea Insurance have submitted their audited financial statements, which necessitated lifting of the trading suspension yesterday, Wednesday September 25, 109.

LINKAGE Assurance Plc is planning to increase its authorised share capital with the creation of 15 billion new ordinary shares of 50 kobo each as the insurance company prepares to raise new equity funds to beef up its capital base.

The Board of Directors of Linkage Assurance yesterday indicated that it has called an extraordinary general meeting of shareholders for next month during which shareholders are expected to consider and approve resolutions authorising the increase in share capital and the new capital raising.

Shareholders are expected to increase the authorised share capital of the insurance company from N7.5 billion or 15 billion ordinary shares of 50 kobo each to N15 billion of 30 billion ordinary shares of 50 kobo each through the creation of 15 billion new ordinary shares of 50 kobo each.

With the increase in authorised share capital, the company will also be amending its memorandum of association and articles of association to reflect the new authorised share capital of N15 billion divided into 30 billion ordinary shares of 50 kobo each.

Shareholders are expected to mandate the directors to “raise additional equity capital for the company up to the maximum limit of the authorised share capital, whether by way of special placement or public offer, right issue or other methods or a combination of any of them, either locally or internationally and upon such terms and conditions as the directors may deem fit in the interest of the company and subject to the approval of the regulatory authorities”.

The National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) had in May, this year released new capital requirements for insurance businesses with a 13-month compliance period for operators to shore up their minimum capital base to the required level. The minimum paid-up share capital of a life insurance company was increased from N2 billion to N8 billion, non-life insurance from N3 billion to N10 billion, composite insurance from N5 billion to N18 billion while re-insurance companies were directed to raise their capital base from N10 billion to N20 billion. Insurance companies are required to comply fully with the new minimum capital base by June 30, 2020.

Many insurance companies have already launched plans to raise new equity funds. Lasaco plans to raise about N11.1 billion in new equity funds through the issuance of 9.25 billion ordinary shares of 50 kobo each at N1.20 per share. The company will issue the shares through special or private placement, which implies that the shares may be offered to strategic investors.

Consolidated Hallmark Insurance Plc is also concluding arrangements to raise new equity funds from existing shareholders as part of efforts to meet the new minimum capital base for its non-life general insurance business

RHAPSODY OF REALITIES

THURSDAY, 26TH SEPTEMBER.

SEE THROUGH THE WORD

Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new (2 Corinthians 5:17).

The scripture above isn’t a promise. Now that you’re born again, you’re a new creature already. The Word doesn’t say you’d become a new creature once your ways or behaviour have become perfect; no! The qualification is being in Christ.

Then, the latter part of the verse says, “…behold, all things are become new.” This means, see through the Word! See spiritually. It doesn’t matter what your life was like before you gave your heart to Christ; now that you’re born again, things have changed!

Notice the underlined word, “behold”; it means to see from God’s perspective. Don’t look at the physical anymore; see through the Spirit. Maybe you were born with a heart condition; old things are passed away! That blood condition is passed away. That cancer has passed out of your body! Those bad habits are gone. Glory to God!

Even the positive things in your life are replaced with better ones. Have this consciousness. See yourself and your life through the Word. All things in your life, now that you’re born again, are of God (2 Corinthians 5:18). That means they’re divine; they’re perfect. No strange “bodies” in you; nothing of the devil is in you.

Jesus said, “…for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me” (John 14:30). As He is, so are we. The enemy doesn’t have his sickness, disease, infirmities, failure, or weakness in you. You were created perfect in Christ Jesus. This is the Word of God concerning you; see yourself in this light.

PRAYER

Dear heavenly Father, I thank you, for I’m the first and the best of your creations; I’m indestructible and impregnable to the corrupting influences of this world, because greater is He that’s in me, than he that’s in the world. I’m a new creature; I’m supernatural. My life is a manifestation of the glory and beauty of divinity. I’m alive to God, spirit, soul, and body, in Jesus’ Name. Amen

26TH SEPTEMBER.

Dear Father, I thank You for the work You’ve committed into my hands, in reaching the unreached with the Gospel of Christ. I am unwavering as I put in the best of my resources, time and energy, in the divine task of reaching the world with the Gospel. Thus, I make great impact for Your Kingdom.

NNPC, OANDO Execute Agreement For Four Omls To Increase Reserves (photos)

…as Corporation, Nigeria Agip Exploration Firm Up ABO OMLs Head of Terms Agreement

To expeditiously grow the Federal Government’s revenue and in turn boost the nation’s reserve base, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Nigeria Agip Oil Company (NAOC) and Oando, have executed a novation agreement for Oil Mining Leases (OMLs) 60,61, 62 and 63.

The Group Managing Director of the NNPC, Mallam Mele Kyari, speaking on the significance of the novation agreement at the NNPC Towers, Wednesday in Abuja, said the agreement marked a significant milestone, with the promise to bring about an amicable end to all litigations, and arbitrations that have over the years inhibited the growth of those assets.

A release by NNPC Agt. Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, Mr. Samson Makoji, said Mallam Kyari explained that the agreement signified the transfer of NNPC interest in those assets to the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC) which would open up the company to contributing to cash calls and further progress the growth of the partnership.

“The Federation divested its interest in the NNPC, NAOC joint ventures and that means we have transferred those interest to the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC) in order to grow NPDC, to become a medium size Upstream company that the federation and the NNPC would be proud of,” Mallam Kyari informed.

He added that the novation agreement offered NNPC partners the comfort that the NPDC would deliver on its responsibilities, stressing that the agreement would open a new chapter of business for NPDC and the entire partnership and create a new frontier for revenues for the companies as well as the nation at large.

Mallam Kyari said the agreement would create more activities in the Upstream, in addition to the concomitant employment opportunities therefrom for the people, saying the partnership held a lot of promise for all.
He said: “This is the beginning of greater things to come in the Oil and Gas Industry. We are ready to make sure that NPDC delivers on her mandate of exploration as this is a milestone in our quest to grow reserves”.

Similarly, the NNPC and the Nigeria Agip Exploration Limited (NAE) signed the Abo OML 125 Head of Terms Agreement which marks a significant advancement towards resolving issues which have lingered in most deep offshore Production Sharing Contracts.

With the development, the parties can now look forward to the renewal of OML 125 and further investment in exploring and developing Abo field resources.
In his response, the Managing Director of NAOC, Lorenzo Fiorillo, said they were glad to partner with the NNPC in its drive to increase crude oil production in Nigeria.

“ENI through its Affiliate NAOC, is on record as the first company to produce from the deep offshore in Nigeria”.

Quote:Wife of Mr. Fidet Okhiria, Managing Director of the Nigeria Railway Corporation, Mrs. Francisca Okhiria was allegedly kidnapped in Benin yesterday along Ulegun Road near Benin – City by unknown gunmen.

Mrs. Okhiria was said to have been trailed from Airport Road by the suspected kidnappers and was accosted at the entrance of her house in a deadly and violent manner.

The armed men who wore police uniform first opened fire severally before abducting her. The daredevil Kidnappers who were trying to get away with their victim shot and killed an innocent military man who was standing by the roadside.

Man arrested for allegedly raping co-worker to death in Ogun State

The Ogun Police Command said it had arrested one Eniola Adenuga, a Mobile Money Agent, who allegedly raped a co-worker, Faith Jude, to death around the Lafenwa area of Abeokuta, Ogun.

Edward Ajogun, the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Operation, paraded the suspect at the command’s headquarters at Eleweran in Abeokuta on Wednesday. Ajogun noted that the suspect had on Sept. 19 reported at Lafenwa police division that he came to his place of work only to discover the lifeless body of the victim (Faith Jude) in front of his office covered with a canopy.

He said that upon his report, the detectives from the Lafenwa division moved to the scene where the picture of the corpse was taken. The deputy commissioner of police said that it was discovered that there were marks of violence on the deceased body which raised the suspicion that she was murdered.

Quote:“Based on the recovery, the complainant was professionally interrogated, and it was discovered that he was the person that killed the victim. He confessed to the crime and stated that the deceased, a co-worker came to the shop to collect money for their boss.
“He took advantage of the heavy downpour on that day to grab the deceased, gagged her mouth with a piece of cloth while he raped her. Having had his way with the girl, he discovered that she had given up the ghost due to the suffocation, “he said.
Ajogun said that the case was undergoing investigation at the homicide section of the command’s Criminal Investigation Department.  The suspects (Eniola Adenuga) confirmed to committing the offence. He noted that the deceased just joined the company, saying that he had been having advances towards her but she had refused to accept his offer.

“I raped her in the shop and she died in the process. She was also having her menstruation at that period. I kept her corpse in the store. In the early hours of the third day of the incident, I placed her corpse in front of the shop and went to report at Lafenwa police station that I found a corpse in front of our shop. I had to confess during the investigation that I covered her mouth with her underwear while I raped her to death". Adenuga pleaded for mercy, adding that he never meant to kill her.

I hope to give out a large part of my wealth to charity like Bill Gates – Dangote

Africa's richest man Aliko Dangote has revealed that he plans to give out a large part of his wealth to charity just like Microsoft founder, Bill Gates.

In his speech at the 2019 Goalkeepers’ event hosted by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in New York on Wednesday September 24, Dangote expressed delight in Bill Gates' philanthrophy which is quite evident in Nigeria.

According to him, the billionaire philanthropist has invested so much in people he has no relationship with and this has made him (Dangote) a better person.

Quote:He said "When I started my foundation in 1994, I never realised we had this massive challenge in the health sector.
“Really, it was mind-boggling when we had this agreement to collaborate with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and that really opened my eyes to realise that there are a lot of challenges in health.
“At that time I didnt have the opportunity of meeting Biill but meeting Bill changed me into a different person. This is somebody that has nothing to do with us in Africa or Nigeria but he is putting his money and his soul into everything.
“He is very committed to helping humanity and that really surprises me a lot and I realised that he is a simple person and I never knew Bill would be this simple. He is a very soft-spoken guy and kind hearted.
“It is very difficult to find people like Bill in this world. Bill, we are very grateful and I can assure you that with my association with Bill, my only prayer is that in the next few years, I will try and give my chunk of wealth to charity.”

Alleged N90bn gift: ''I will waive my immunity to be investigated'' Osinbajo, instructs lawyers to file legal proceedings against Timi Frank

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo says he will be waiving his immunity as the number 2 person in Nigeria to enable the appropriate quarters investigate the alleged N90 billion gift the Federal Inland Revenue Service gave to him in the buildup of the 2019 general election.

Timi Frank, a former spokesperson of APC made the allegation in a recent interview. Frank alleged that the FIRS which is headed by Tunde Fowler, a strong ally of Vice President Osinbajo, released N90 billion to the Vice President to facilitate the APC's campaign in the 2019 general election.

N5.5bn SUVs: If Democracy Is Expensive, Try Dictatorship - Adedayo Adeyeye

If you think democracy is expensive, try dictatorship’ — senate spokesman defends ‘N5.5bn SUVs’

Quote:Adedayo Adeyeye, spokesman of the senate, has defended the decision of the national assembly to purchase sport utility vehicles (SUVs) reportedly worth N5.5 billion for its members.

Justifying the decision, Adeyeye said if Nigerians think democracy is expensive because of the legislature they could experiment with dictatorship and do a cost analysis.

Adeyeye said this when journalists asked him about the huge sum earmarked for the purchase of cars by the legislature on Tuesday.

He wondered why the case of the legislature would be different when officials in the executive and in the judiciary have vehicles.

“In this country, legislators, ministers and civil servants were provided houses and then the policy was stopped,” he said.

”As of today, most government officials have official vehicles the same way judicial officials have. I have asked the question several times why that of the legislature is different?
“It is simply because the legislature has not been part of the government. In a democracy, it is because of the legislature you have democracy at all. Because we are already used to the judiciary and executive having these things. A lot of people in Nigeria even think there is a need for the national assembly.

“They think it is a waste but I tell you to try dictatorship and we have tried dictatorship in this country and we have seen where it took us. Like people used to say if you think education is expensive try ignorance.

“I am now saying if you think democracy is expensive and the legislature is not necessary, try dictatorship and let us see. Do a cost/benefit analysis.”

BudgIT, Nigeria’s civic tech organisation, had asked the national assembly to stop its culture of waste and to shelve the plan.

There is corruption in N-SIP programme Osinbajo superintends – EFCC Boss, Ibrahim Magu

The acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission Ibrahim Magu, has raised an alarm over an alleged corruption in the National Social Investment Programme and Anchor Borrower’s Programme which Vice President Yemi Osinbajo superintends.

Speaking at the 15th Anti-Corruption Situation Room organised by the Human and Environmental Development Agenda in Kaduna on Tuesday September 24, Magu who was represented by the anti-graft agency spokesperson Wilson Uwajuren, said they are working to make sure they don't create more crisis as corruption has crept into the programme.

Quote:Magu, represented by spokesman for the anti-corruption agency, Wilson Uwujaren,  at the event, said, “The crisis in Nigeria today boils down to corruption. The EFCC is doing everything possible to ensure that stolen resources are recovered and returned. Civil society organisations need to play more active role, especially in the National Social Investment Programme.
“Corruption has crept into the implementation of the programme. We want to ensure that we don’t create more crisis from a crisis situation. In the Anchor Borrower’s Programme, there are people who are bagging sand instead of fertiliser.”

The N-SIP programme which is funded by the Central Bank of Nigeria was created in 2016 to ensure primary school pupils are fed, create jobs for 500,000 jobseekers, carry out conditional cash transfer for traders and the poor and enterprise promotion.

Land dispute sees family exhume 2 corpses 3 weeks after burial

A land dispute between two families led to two corpses being exhumed three weeks after they were buried.

The corpses exhumed in Isiozi Umuaka, Imo state, are those of a mother and her daughter-in-law who died 6 and 4 years ago respectively.

The dead could not be laid to rest after their death as there was no place to bury them due to the lingering land dispute. They were eventually buried on the land under dispute three weeks ago but this caused displeasure to the other family as the case is still in court.

The dispute took a turn for the worse on Tuesday, September 24 when both corpses were dug out from the land by the other family and deposited at Nwankwoikpa market square in Imo state.

Former BBNaija housemate now fitness trainer, Kemen, has revealed how all his dreams came crumbling down before him when he turned 25. In a post he shared on IG, kemen who turns 30 today September 25th, revealed that his plans of getting married at 25, having all his kids before 29 and also helping his wife get her body back before 30, all came crashing down when he turned 23.

His post resonated with many of his followers whose dreams outlined when they were in their 20s did not materialize. Read his post below

Quote:10yrs ago when I was 20 and working in a multinational company, I thought @25 I would be married, have my last child @29 help my wife 0get her body back in a year @30 and start acting as new lovers ever after. Oh well, I guess I thought too loud and my yard people heard me. I lost my job 3yrs later after I turned 23.

25 met me at the darkest point in my life, depression & ill health led me to fitness but it was obviously designed by God that I go that route because HE placed everyone I needed to get me through the hard times.
5 years down the line, I can say that fitness changed my life, my person, my perspective, my ideology and my understanding of life.
In fitness I found peace, love, satisfaction, hope and fulfilment.
I may not have all I want, but I certainly have what I need.

I'm thankful
I'm grateful
I'm the best of my kind
I'm 30
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME.

ISIS-backed Boko Haram Faction ‘Executes’ Nigerian Aid Worker
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion
Posted by: Edoman - 09-25-2019, 02:37 PM - No Replies

The Islamic States’ West Africa Province (ISWAP) has allegedly executed one of the six aid workers it abducted from Nigeria’s North East region.

This was disclosed by Ahmad Salkida, an investigative journalist and terrorism reporter, in a tweet sighted by Igbere TV, Wednesday, Sept. 25.

According to Salkida, the group said it took the action because the Nigerian government deceived them following months and series of unfruitful negotiations.

Though the name of the executed aid worker was not given, the journalist said he worked with the Action Against Hunger (AAH) in Borno State.

This comes barely a week after the military shut down operations of the AAH in North East, accusing the group of aiding and abetting Boko Haram activities.

The action of the Nigerian army is coming barely two months after six workers of the AAH group were forcefully abducted from Borno.

Igbere TV learned that the terrorist group are threatening to execute the remaining five aid workers in their custody if nothing is done by the Nigerian government.

Quote:“Just In: #ISWAP has executed one of the six aid workers, working with the Action Against Hunger that were abducted two months ago in Borno. One of the male aid workers was executed at close range in a short video clip seen by this reporter.

“The group, in a horrific video of the execution, said it took the action because "the government deceived them" following months of what is now known as secret negotiations between a team of intermediaries and unnamed officials.

“ISWAP has also threatened to execute the other remaining staff of the International Non Governmental organization (ACF/AAH). Recall, the INGO was declared persona non grata last week by the @HQNigerianArmy for aiding terrorism in the region, an allegation the INGO denied”, Salkida wrote.

Quote:Magnus Eze , Enugu

An Anambra state businessman (name withheld) said to be in his late 50s has died during alleged marathon sex with a widow in Enugu.

The incident which happened at a hotel along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, few days ago, came to the open when his lover who allegedly lost her husband recently raised the alarm attracting the hotel management to the scene.

The hotel management had reportedly invited the Police who took the body to an unnamed hospital where he was confirmed dead.

The remains have since been deposited in a mortuary while the lady lover was detained at Trans-Ekulu Police station Enugu.

However, the embattled lady has denied having sex with her man lover.

The widow claimed that when she arrived the hotel from Anambra state, the man had taken two bottles of big stout and some substance suspected to be sex enhancing drug in readiness for action.

According to her, surprisingly, “he started behaving abnormally and breathing fast. I had not even touched him. So, I shouted and called the hotel people.”

Daily Sun gathered that when the wife of the deceased was eventually contacted, she came to Enugu and was told what happened. She opted not to pursue the case but instead, in agreement with the husband’s relations decided to retrieve the corpse from the police for burial.

“His wife said that it was a shameful death so they’re not ready to make case with anybody.

She has gone to the court to get the necessary papers to claim the corpse,” a source volunteered.

Police public relations officer for Enugu State, Ebere Amaraizu could not speak on the status of the matter, claiming to have just returned from official trip outside the state.

Buhari Must Remove Terrorist Tag On IPOB - Group Tells UN
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion
Posted by: Edoman - 09-25-2019, 11:56 AM - No Replies

An Igbo group, Voice from the East (VEAST), yesterday in Enugu pleaded with the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) to use the opportunity of its ongoing meeting in the United States of America (USA) to mount pressure of President Muhammadu Buhari to remove the terrorist tag on the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The group, in a statement signed by its convener, Comrade Kindness Jonah, stated that the invitation extended to the IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, by the European Parliament, is evident that the group is championing self-determination.

“We have been inundated with the outcome of the invitation of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu to address European Parliament on the issue of Biafra. Many have expressed reservations on the invitation by the body on somebody that the Nigerian Government tagged ‘a terrorist’.

VEAST pointed out that the terrorist tag on IPOB by Buhari–led government when juxtaposed with the invitation and Nkanu’s landmark address had been “rubbished”.

Commenting further, Jonah queried: “How can a leader of a terrorist ‘group’ be invited to address such a body like European Parliament, yet, Nigerian government calls it terrorist group?

Speaking sarcastically, he said: “IPOB is a terrorist group, but European Parliament invited it; killer herdsmen are aberrantly killing but are not terrorist group, yet, they could not be invited, and Boko Haram, a ‘co- terrorist group’ with IPOB could not be invited.

“Nigeria by this episodic invitation has been pragmatically presented as a Hobbesian state and theater of absurdities. This two ideologues are irreconcilable.”

As if invitation by European Parliament was not enough, stressed Comrade Jonah, United Nations Special Committee of the General Assembly has invited Nnamdi Kanu, the first Nigerian to be so honoured, to speak on Biafra issues as did the European Parliament, the group claimed.

“VEAST is therefore calling on UN to prevail on President Muhammadu Bihari to remove the terrorist tag on IPOB and dialogue with the group like they are doing with bandits, killer herdsmen and kidnappers in the North,” he said.

The group said it has come to the firm conclusion that “semantics of a religious order and not stubborn facts was squarely responsible for the fiendish tag of a terrorist group on IPOB by the government”.

Comrade Jonah called on the Federal Government to unconditionally cancel the unfounded terrorist tag on IPOB and perfectly restructure Nigeria, if it ever thought of stopping Biafra agitation.

Edo 2020: PDP Mounts Pressure On Obaseki To Defect
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion
Posted by: Edoman - 09-25-2019, 11:54 AM - No Replies

Temidayo Akinsuyi, Lagos

Quote:There are indications that ahead of next year’s governorship election in Edo State, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is seeking to take advantage of the crisis between Governor Godwin Obaseki and his predecessor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, national chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Sources told Daily Independent that the leaders of the PDP at the national and state levels are making overtures to Obaseki to decamp and get the party’s ticket if it was denied him by the APC.

While the Edo State chapter of the APC is solidly behind the governor, our correspondent gathered that Oshiomhole, who has publicly accused the governor of illegality in the inauguration of the state’s House of Assembly and abandonment of uncompleted projects, may use his influence as the national chairman of the party to deny the governor the ticket next year.

Dan Orbih, the Edo State chairman of the PDP, declined to comment on the issue, saying he didn’t want to speak on it on telephone.

However, speaking with our correspondent, a member of the PDP’s Board of Trustees (BoT) said, as a sitting governor, Obaseki would be an asset to any political party, the reason political parties in the state were desirous of having him run on their platform.

“There is no political party that will not want a sitting governor who will likely seek re-election to join its fold.

“The desire of any political party is to be the governing party. So, our door is open to the governor, but we are waiting to see how the development goes. The election is still months away,” he said.

When contacted, Barr. Anselm Ojezua, the Edo State chairman of the APC, said he was confident that no matter what happened, Governor Obaseki would never leave the party for the PDP or any other political party.

Ojezua, who likened the APC to a ship and PDP to a boat, said rather than join any other party, members of the other political parties who are impressed with the governor’s performance would come and join him in the APC.

“I will be very surprised if the governor accepts PDP’s invitation to join them? How can he jump from a ship to a boat?

“The APC in Edo today is a large ship while the PDP is a boat. He cannot join the PDP. It is the PDP who will come and join him in his party, the APC.

“Obaseki is very comfortable in the APC. He has justified the confidence that the electorate in Edo have reposed in him.
“It also shows that the APC made a good choice when we chose him to be the flag bearer of the party.

“What is happening now is good news to APC. If every party wants him, it means that his re-election will be a fait accompli,” he said.
In a related development, concerned political leaders in Edo have described as ignorant those saying Obaseki would receive the Ambode treatment when he decides to seek re-election.
Festus Etokhana, one of the APC leaders in Edo State, said the Ambode treatment cannot work in Edo State because unlike the former governor of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode, who was rejected by the APC leaders in Lagos, Obaseki enjoys the support of Edo APC leaders.
“There are many reasons why Obaseki can’t get the Ambode treatment in Edo.

“One, the politics of Edo is very different from Lagos politics. Two, the governor enjoys the support of Edo APC leaders; Ambode did not.
“Even when Asiwaju Bola Tinubu wanted to pardon him, the leaders said they will revolt against him.

“In Edo here, 80 percent of APC members are with Obaseki. The State Exco, led by the party chairman, are solidly behind him.
“Many elders of the party rose in his defence when this issue started. So, how will he get the Ambode treatment here in Edo?” Etokhana asked.
On the accusation that the governor was ungrateful to those who assisted him to get to power, he said: “Honestly, I think those accusing Governor Obaseki of being disloyal are making a grave mistake because they are not conversant with what is happening in Edo.

“Do you know the role Governor Obaseki played in his emergence as national chairman? Even Oshiomhole has admitted himself that God used Obaseki in his becoming the governor Of Edo State.

“Let me take you back a bit. When INEC declared that the PDP and Senator Osereimen Osunbor won the 2007 governorship election in Edo State, Oshiomhole was confused and resigned to fate.

“It was Obaseki that approached him and said: “Let us go to court, there are enough evidence that you won.

“Oshiomhole replied that he had no money to prosecute the case in court because he had exhausted all his money in the governorship election.

“Again, Obaseki asked him not to worry and he used his influence in the business world to rally people who raised the funds which Oshiomhole used in prosecuting the election.

“As God will have it, Oshiomhole won in court and when he was sworn in, he appointed Obaseki as head of his economic team.

“Up till when he became national chairman, they had no issues. This whole issue started after he became national chairman because he started acting in strange ways.

“I think there is this Abuja influence that usually comes upon our politicians, because the whole trouble started when he became national chairman and relocated to Abuja. He started acting in strange ways, giving orders to everybody, from governors to ministers. You all heard when he said if President Buhari condoned indiscipline, he won’t”.

Battle for the souls of airlines in a toxic environment

Local airlines need level-playing field, fair competition to survive. PHOTO:Google

[color=var(--atc)]Battle for the souls of airlines in a toxic environment

The much-awaited new national carrier is expected to address the problems of capacity. But the proposed airline and equally important private operators cannot hope to survive, if fixing the unfriendly business environment and workable guidelines for fair competition are still afterthoughts. WOLE OYEBADE writes.

National carriers worldwide are symbols of national pride – a mobile-branded embassy in the air.
Countries that are fortunate to have sustained the ‘money-losing’ carrier still guard it jealously. Even those without are squeezing the reserves to have one in the air.
Nigeria, the most populous African nation and the largest economy on the continent is having another go at the high-capital intensive venture after the misfortunes of hurriedly liquidated Nigeria Airways.

But the worry for stakeholders, especially the local operators and investors, is the uncertainties of having government, the regulator, also become an operator in the same high-risk house of cards that is governed by mutual distrust and survival of the fittest rule.
More discerning parties are of the position that beyond just a new national carrier, a friendly business environment should take precedence if the government would not put the cart before the horse.
Of specific concern is the imperative of strategic policies to safeguard all investments, and create a win-win environment for all, at least to eliminate the urgency of tilting the balance mid-way.

Nigeria Air in the air

Recall that the Federal Government in 2016 launched the aviation road map – an ambitious plan to turnaround one of the most critical non-oil sectors of the economy. On the agenda were plans to set up a new national carrier, concession the airports for efficiency, set up Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility and aircraft leasing company to avail capacity.
Though none of the determined plans has been delivered to date, but fillers suggest that the new national carrier, Nigeria Air, is at an advanced stage.

The Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, is upbeat that the government is building a national carrier that will stand the test of time.

Decision to suspend UK parliament s 'unlawful' - Supreme C
Senate, presidlas
“We don’t want what happened to Air Nigeria repeat itself because someone just woke up from the left side of the bed and decided to liquidate Nigerian Airways, and set up Air Nigeria, which didn’t last. We want to build an airline that can challenge Ethiopian Airlines,” Sirika said recently.
Clearly, the Federal Government has an inclination for national prestige, strength and capacity for good competition in the global aviation community. Indeed, the country has over 100 Bilateral Air Service Agreements (BASAs) to reciprocate, coupled with the dense population of 200 million market that is already a goldmine for a new national carrier.

Pitfalls ahead

Amid the irresistible enticements of the local market and its potential, there is more to the survival of the air travel industry than throwing in the national carrier dice, and the Chairman of the Airlines Operators of Nigeria (AON), Nogie Meggison, said as much.
Meggison welcomes the idea of a new national though doubts some of the problems it aims to solve.
He observed that the problem of the sector was not essentially that of capacity, but of infrastructure deficit and tough operating environment that should ordinarily be tackled head-on before other considerations.

Meggison reckoned that the shrinking size of the domestic carriers and the sector at large was the reflection of the tough business environment that had continued to take its toll on investments.
Indeed, many private airlines had featured, though short-lived, since the demise of the Nigeria Airways in 2004. An NCAA estimate showed over 100 registered airlines with a lifespan of five years in an industry that is notable for free-entry and free-exit.
The causal factors of the high mortality apparently still threaten the eight surviving local airlines and as well await the coming national carrier.

High cost of operations

Top on the log, for instance, is the high cost of routine maintenance, which gulps about 40 per cent of the total operating cost of an airline. C-check, one of the major maintenance programmes, is done on aircraft overseas every 18 months at a cost in the neighbourhood of N350 million to N700 million.
Besides maintenance, another big challenge is aviation fuel, which costs another 40 per cent of total operating cost of an airline.

Meggison said what the industry needs the most is a clear economic policy for the survival of domestic airlines, with some certain issues placed at the fore.
They include the review of five per cent Ticket Sales Charge (TSC) to a flat rate in line with the global best practices and harmonisation of over 35 multiple charges, which add huge burdens on airlines.
Others are poor navigational and landing aids that limits operations to daylight operation for most airports; high cost and epileptic supply of JetA1; obsolete infrastructure that hampers the ease of doing business; and lack of consultations with airlines before introduction of new charges and policies among others, which throw the feasibility studies of airlines out the window.

Recall that at least two presidential committees in 2005 and 2017 had been assigned to investigate why airlines were dying. All of the issues raised above were listed in the white paper submitted by the 2005 Paul Dike Presidential Task Force with recommendations that have not been implemented to date.
According to Meggison, “The mortality rate of airlines in Nigeria within the last 11 years stands at 57 per cent. This is quite alarming. There is, therefore, an urgent need for a deliberate economic policy that will critically look into the support and the positive growth of the aviation sector and survival of domestic airlines in the country,” he said.

Chief Operating Officer of one of the airlines affirmed that it would be hard for any airline to survive in this clime, and “those of us that have come this far deserve some credits.””
“I can bet that even the new national carrier will find it hard to survive in this environment without government helping them to cut corners. I thought the most logical thing to do is making the industry better by removing booby-traps for all investments to thrive.

“What we have often seen, and the reason we are worried is that once the government carrier comes on board and settled into the grim realities, government would do everything to ensure that it does not fail too quickly thereby cut-off its charges, offer subsidised fuel, and other privileges, forgetting that it is a competitive market.
“Instead of a national carrier, it soon becomes a government-owned airline. In turn, the ‘spoilt child’ will start behaving like one, crashing ticket fares with predatory pricing just to run other airlines aground. That is why some operators are against the national carrier project, and it is justifiable. A new airline should never mean another obstacle or death knell of other airlines.

“Who says Air Peace, Arik or Dana cannot be a formidable flag carrier of reference if given the right support? Air Peace just played the role of a national carrier in South Africa last week. That airline has three Boeing777 airliners already, with pending orders enough to cover major cities in the world.
“So, you can’t keep talking about poor capacity when you have not support airlines with tax holidays and other concessions. If support is given to the right people and investors, the existing business concerns will blossom and the economy will grow,” he said.”

A win-win aviation policy, strategic plan

In other climes where the mixed economy had worked, a particular factor of reference is the clear-cut policy that fairly represents the interest of all parties in a liberal environment.
Chief Executive Officer of African Aviation Services Limited, Nick Fadugba, said despite how beautiful the Nigeria Air plan seems, “it is still clouded in a lot of uncertainties” around here.
Fadugba observed that with Nigeria Air coming on board while Arik Air and Aero Contractors are already under the control of the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON), “it means the government shall own three airlines and I don’t know any country in the world where that is done.”

He wished that the government had first sat with the airlines’ operators to have a macro managed view, implication, routes and sustainability impact of the new national carrier before having the launch.
“Imagine three Nigerian airlines competing against one another on the London route with B777 planes. How sustainable is that? Yes, we need strong airlines but the creation of a national carrier must not knock off private airlines,” Fadugba said.
It was in line with this lurking danger that even the national carrier enthusiasts have insisted that the government must stick to a national carrier and not another government-owned airline.

Aviation Security consultant, Group Capt. John Ojikutu (rtd), said the plan to establish the airline must continue but it must be done with foreign technical investors holdings of not more than 40 per cent.
Ojikutu reckoned that Nigeria credible investors should own 20 per cent of investment; Nigerian IPOs 25 per cent; Federal government five per cent and state governments 10 per cent, to truly make it a national airline.
The point is that a national carrier is no longer fashionable in most countries. However, this does not foreclose another experiment, if the environment is right and can guarantee true national interest and transparency in the interest of existing businesses and the economy at large.
