Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu, who was disqualified by APC from Oyo primaries, has stated that he won’t be resigning any time soon.

According to Adebayo Shittu in an interview with Everest Amaefule, resigning will mean handing his defamers a smile which they never earned. Here are excerpts from the interview;
Looking at recent events, you took your party to court; it appears you are planning to defect. Are you planning to defect?
No, I will not defect. I have a divine bond with Mr. President, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.). Even as a foundation member of the All Progressives Congress, there has been enough provocation for me to defect but my bond, I believe, is made in heaven with my leader and mentor – the person I am trying to imitate in terms of his incorruptibility, patriotism, and commitment to getting things done properly and in terms of respect for the rule of law. I will not defect. Even though other political parties have offered me carrots, inviting me to come and be their party’s candidate, I remain steadfast in the APC.
I believe that wherever injustice surfaces, it is part of our binding duty to fight it to a halt. You will recall that on few occasions when Mr. President did not get justice from the political field, he went to court even if he didn’t still get justice from the court at that time. He remained steadfast and at the end of the day, he got justice from the public who eventually voted for him in 2015 in such a way that left no person in doubt as to his victory.
If you are saying that the law does not require you to present NYSC certificate in order to contest an election, the law requires that you have it before you hold an office. So, if you are going to contest, is it not normal to assume that you shold hold one?
Holding an office is different from civil service office. With regards to political offices, you don’t have to have it. That is one. This is a matter that the court had already decided on in 1979 when I won election into the House of Assembly. My opponent at that time went to court to challenge my election and the court decided that I needed not to have an NYSC certificate of whatever colouration. And in any case, even if the court had not decided; it is the same provision of the law that guided participation in election in 1979 that still exists in the current constitution. Of course, these issues have to be submitted to the court. So, I don’t need to address them now at this stage. We will meet in court. We will find out where they got their own law from.
A lot people are also expecting that you should follow in the footsteps of your former colleague in the cabinet, Kemi Adeosun, instead of heaping a moral burden on the government.
Is my case the same as that of Kemi Adeosun? It is completely different. Kemi Adeosun, unfortunately, had someone procure for her a forged NYSC exemption certificate, which she didn’t need anyway. She didn’t need it. I have not presented any forged certificate. It is like light and darkness; you don’t compare the two.
So with these controversies, you don’t think you should resign and not burden the party.
There is no controversy. My traducers: I will not make them happy. I will not put smile on their faces. They will continue to lament and lament and lament and look at me climb up politically. So, as long as I am concerned, I don’t know where they got their story from; that the President was expecting me to resign. Resign for what? Did I commit a crime? I plead not guilty to such charge from any quarters.

Earlier this week, we reported that the Nigerian police, will on October 31 arraign the Peoples Democratic Party governorship candidate in the recen Osun State election, Senator Ademola Adeleke, for alleged examination malpractice, criminal conspiracy, and impersonation.

However an outcry has trailed the planned arraignment, as the Presidency was slammed by Nigerians who felt that the action was politically motivated and calculated to humiliate him and frustrate the electoral chances of Ademola Adeleke.
Punch reported that the police had explained that on July 21, 2017, the Osun State Police Intelligence Bureau received and acted on an actionable intelligence about an ongoing examination malpractice involving Senator Adeleke and Sikiru at Ojo-Aro Community Grammar School in the state.
But while the police were taking steps to prosecute Adeleke, the Force failed to investigate or prosecute a former Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, for certificate forgery. She subsequently left for  London,  United Kingdom less than 24 hours after tendering her resignation letter.
Speaking on behalf of the Nigerian police Force, the Force Public Relations Officer, Jimoh Moshood claimed that they had no idea that Kemi Adeosun was involved in the forgery of the NYSC exemption certificate. According to him, there was no formal complaint against the ex-minister. He explained that Adeosun was not prosecuted for forgery because she was not investigated by the Force.
We don’t know anything about her case because nobody reported any matter to us, we didn’t have any complaint against her, and nobody complained or reported to us. The Force has no knowledge of any case,” Moshood stated.
When told that the matter was covered by the media for months, he retorted, “Did you (our correspondent) report to us?” he said.
[size=undefined]However when told that a non-governmental organisation, Human and Environmental Development Agenda Resource Centre, had petitioned the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, to probe the forgery allegations against Adeosun before she resigned, Moshood directed further inquiries to the NGO.[/size]

A 13-year-old girl named Elizabeth Ochanya Ogbaje who was raped by her a lecturer and his son in Benue state, has passed away, according to reports. 

According to philanthropist Ukan Kurugh, the young girl battled with Vesico Vaginal Fistula (VVF) and other health complications at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Makurdi, before her death yesterday. 

51-year-old lecturer who is said to be the Head of Department, Catering and Hotel Management at the Benue State Polytechnic, Ugbokolo, Benue State, Mr. Andrew Ogbuja and his son, Victor Inalegwu Ogbuja, a final year student of Animal Production at the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi, consistently molested little Ochanya since she was 8.

The autopsy report has also affirmed the cause of her death to be sexual molestation of a minor, according to reports. 

Ochanya, was living with the family due to her relationship to the man's wife (Mrs. Felicia Ochiga-Ogbuja) who is her cousin before she became an object of sexual satisfaction for the father and son..

It was gathered that the girl would take ill but it was difficult for the hospitals in Ugbokolo to detect exactly what was wrong even when she collapses occasionally. 

Ochanya, after serious interrogation revealed how long the molestation had been taking place and how she was threatened against her life if anyone got to know of what was happening. She explained that she was forced with drugs which made her not to be very conscious of what happened.

A sour loser resorted to begging, yesterday, after brutalizing a lady at a Nairabet shop in Delta mall, Delta State.

It was gathered that he lost his cool after losing a N200 net and took out his frustration on the lady by using a bucket to hit her left eye.

However, he took to begging profusely after he was handed over to a military officer present at the scene. 

The man, who admitted that he was wrong, promised to take responsibility of the medical bills of his victim, but he was eventually whisked away by the police.

A policeman has been reported dead with another seriously wounded in a fatal auto crash along Airport road in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State.

The injured policeman was rushed to an undisclosed hospital where he is currently receiving treatment.

According to Sapele Olofofo Unugbragada, it was learnt that the policeman from Ugborikoko Police Divisional Headquarters on routine stop-and-search at about 9pm on Thursday flagged down a “Yahoo boy” and his driver.

Rather than stop and clarify himself to the police, the “Yahoo boy” ordered his driver to zoom off.

The policeman, in a bid to arrest the suspected fraudster, dragged the steering with his (Yahoo boy’s) driver who was already on high speed.

The incident led to the fatal accident which claimed the life of the deceased policeman as he was crushed by the car.

The search mission for victims of the passenger bus that veered off a flooded bridge and plunged into a river in Rivers state, is still in progress with more corpses recovered. 

The latest corpses were recovered from the river on Thursday and have been identified by their relatives.

The identities of the corpses are; Bishop Raph G.U Innocent from Erema town in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State, Uchechukwu Nnenoka, from Isu local government area of Imo state and Chizaru Oti from Alibrada town in Rivers state. 

The accident happened on Tuesday, October 16, after the loaded bus fell into a river along (Akala Olu) Okogbe-Mbiama axis, East-West road of Ahoada West local government area of the state.

About seven passengers were rescued unconscious and rushed to a hospital immediately after the accident. 

The rescue mission is still ongoing.

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that he holds former President, Goodluck Jonathan in high esteem for accepting defeat in 2015.


Buhari said that for that singular act, Jonathan will always remain in his mind.

Buhari said this while also frowning on the activities of religious extremists who shout “Allahu Akbar (Allah is Great)” while killing innocent people.


The President also declared that the activities of the Boko Haram sect in the Northern part of the country would soon become a history.

Buhari spoke on Thursday night when he hosted members of the Kannywood entertainment industry to a dinner at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Buhari said, “It’s totally wrong for any believer in God to kill innocent people either in the Mosque, Church or the marketplace.


“You can’t be shouting Allahu Akbar (Allah is Great), Allahu Akbar, and killing innocent citizens and destroying property all in the name of God.

“It is either you don’t know what you are saying or you don’t even believe in the existence of God Almighty. God has nothing to do with injustice.

“So, now we are confronting them and by the grace of God, we will destroy them.’’

On Jonathan, the President added, “I’ll continue to hold former president, Jonathan in high esteem as a result of that singular act.

"He's been poisoning my food and drink. He wants to kill me"- Nigerian woman held hostage in Germany by her husband sends out SOS (video)




 
A Nigerian woman resident in Germany with her family has accused her husband of taking her kids from her, locking her up, and trying to kill her.
Adenike Obaoye said her husband locked her up and left the house. She also alleged that he has taken the kids away from her. He alone has the key to the house and she can't get out of the house.
She claimed in a Facebook Live video that he's been poisoning her food and drinks.
In an initial video, she is seen locked up in a room with her children. She is heard saying in the video that her husband was in the same room with them and he wanted to kill her. At some point, the video becomes unsteady as she appears to struggle with someone while screaming: "Leave me alone. Leave me alone. You want to kill me".
In another video, she's seen alone and she went on to reveal her husband has left with the kids but he went with the keys and locked her inside. She also claimed that he took her phone charger and that he disconnected the Wi-Fi.
Police later attended to the domestic incident, according to social media users in Germany.
The entire incident unfolded last night, October 18, 2018.

The police has arrested one Ayegunle Adekunle for allegedly defiling a 3-year-old girl. The suspect, currently in the custody of the police in Onipanu Divisional Headquarters, Ogun State. 

While he thought the evil act had been sealed, the law of retribution suddenly went after him and, in no time, caught up with him. He was arrested on October 17, 2018.

In a press release dated October 18, 2018, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the child's mother noticed a strange development of blood stains in the girl's pant and was shocked to the bone marrow.

She was said to had taken the victim into her apartment, removed her pant and became more nonplussed on discovery that she was bleeding.

Still confused as to what could have led to such an abnormal situation, she enquired from her daughter what took place.

"The girl disclosed how the suspect lured her into his room and had carnal knowledge of her", the PPRO said, following which the embittered woman raced to the police station to lodge a complaint.

According to Oyeyemi, "The suspect, who happened to be a co-tenant with the victim's parents at No. 29 Oremeji Street, Oriokuta, Otta, was arrested following the report by the victim’s mother, who reported at Onipanu Divisional Headquarters, Otta that she discovered a blood stain in her daughter's pant

"Upon the complaint, the DPO Onipanu Division, SP Sangobiyi Johnson, detailed his detectives to the scene where the suspect was promptly arrested. He has since confessed to the commission of the crime, attributing it to the handiwork of the devil.The victim has been taken to hospital for medical attention and report", Oyeyemi said.

Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN) yesterday said about 60.2 million barrels of crude oil were stolen from the country between 2011 and 2014.

Speaking at the 40th anniversary of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), Falana noted that the stolen product passed through the Philadelphia Port in the United States of America (U.S.A.).

Also, National President of PENGASSAN, Olabode Jonshon, said the union would engage the Federal Government and legislature on how to evolve a new beginning for the passage of the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB).

“We supported the new Joint Venture (JV) cash call framework and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) reforms. Currently, we are engaging the executive and legislature on the passage of the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB),” Johnson said.

On the revenue losses to crude oil theft, Falana said: “The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) commissioned a study about seven years ago concerning millions of barrels of crude oil that leave Nigeria unaccounted for.
“The study found that between January 2011 and December 2014, 60.2 million barrels of crude oil left Nigeria that were not recorded, but were recorded to have been discharged at the Philadelphian Port in the U.S.
“It revealed that the value of the stolen oil amounted to $12.7 billion. That was oil discharged in just one port. We have identified the oil majors that were involved and we have also identified the shipping company.
“But since 2014, we have been begging the Federal Government to recover the money and nothing has been done. The money lost in U.S, India, China and other ports where our oil is discharged exceeds $100 billion.
“We wrote a petition to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) that while they are busy recovering small money from politicians, this is the real money available to Nigeria, but unfortunately, no action has been taken,” he stated.
While urging the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the labour movement to lead the battle for recovering outstanding crude oil proceeds, Falana said Nigeria is also losing huge revenues due to the non-implementation of Offshore and Inland Sharing Formula Act enacted in 1999 but was backdated to 1993.

Cyber thieves raid banks, inflict losses

Nigerian financial system has been jolted by a lethal development; and that is the growing activities of cyber criminals who work in and outside the system.

Website cloing, Identity fraud and Automated Teller Machine (ATM) scams, are now so rampant that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), banks, switching companies, the police and users are having sleepless nights.

In 2017, Nigeria was estimated to have lost about $450 million to cybercrimes.


The most common today is the fake bank alerts scam which is growing in scope and leaving in its losses in its wake.

In this scam, fraudsters pose as potential buyers of goods or services provided by the bank customer and after both parties have agreed on a price, send fake SMS’s indicating they have deposited money into the sellers’ account.

The criminals usually count on their target, believing the SMS is real and would not bother to confirm with his/her bank before releasing the goods.

There is also website cloning scam where websites of genuine financial institutions are cloned are the scammers using what is known as phishing, the criminals send fraudulent SMSes and emails to victims directing them fake Web sites where they are asked to input sensitive data.

In the emails, the criminals had attachments that, when clicked, secretly install “spyware” that can capture personal information and send it to third parties over the Internet.

With the information supplied by victims, the criminals successfully broke into the victims’ bank accounts leaving tales of woes and losses.


Though the financial institutions are mostly affected by cybercrimes, all other sectors are culpable and assured Nigerians that financial institutions are strictly compelled to adhere to CBN regulations to secure online financial transactions.

The CBN, said it is working on modalities for new regulations to stem the rising losses that emanate from cybercrime and technology risk in the financial sector.

Mrs. Aishah Ahmad, deputy governor, CBN, said that “There is compelling need to redesign regulations that will address risk that may emanate from the new emerging and increasing modern class of financial firms.”

Elsewhere, electronic transaction switching and payment processing companies are building more security layers on top of existing ones to check the activities of the fraudsters.

The Police on the other hand said that that the development was being monitored and that the Commission is inviting useful information that would help burst the crime.

Also, Niger Delta Affairs Minister Usani Uguru Usani failed to upturn the outcome of the Cross River State governorship primary.

Mrs Buhari’s brother Mahmoud Halilu (aka Modi) and President of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) Bala Bobboi Kaigama also lost the opportunity to have their candidates returned as party standard bearers.

There was tension at the national headquarters of APC as aspirants for the Senate and House of Representatives sought information on who- is-who on the list being taken to the INEC.

The party’s Director of Organisation, Alhaji Abubakar Kari, at about 2pm, led some officials in a branded APC bus to submit the list of candidates to INEC.

The two petitions against the governorship primaries in Rivers by Senator Abe and Chief Dumo Lulu-Briggs were not upheld. The petition from Delta State by Prof. Pat Utomi was dismissed and tagged “overtaken by event”.

From Borno, there were four petitions against the conduct of the governorship primary. The committee recommended that a consensus option be explored to be driven by the National Chairman in consultation with the President.

It was also gathered that majority of the petitions against the conduct of the Senate and House of Representatives primaries were not upheld for various reasons, ranging from lack of merit and lack of proof to lack of time for fresh primaries. No reasons were adduced for not upholding some others.

Similarly, some petitions were upheld and some of the petitioners declared as candidates of the party either because they actually won the primaries and were substituted or for other reasons ranging from lack of clearance and others that were not adduced by the committee.

A summary of the report indicated that all petitions on the Senate and House of Representatives primaries were rejected by the panel.

Also rejected were those from Bayelsa, Rivers and Cross River states.

In Delta State, eight petitions were upheld because the petitioners won the primaries, but their names substituted. Seven were rejected. The three petitions against the conduct of the governorship primary in Akwa Ibom State was rejected alongside eight House of Representatives seat. Five were upheld.

From Kaduna State, six petitions were treated on the senatorial primaries. Five of them were rejected. The one by Shehu Sani was upheld.

Two petitions each were received against the governorship primaries in Sokoto and Jigawa states. They were rejected. Three House of Representatives and three senatorial petitions were rejected from the two states.

Petitions from Kebbi and Katsina states were also rejected. The two against the conduct of the governorship primary were referred to the National Working Committee.

The petitions from Kano were either upheld or referred to the party’s national secretariat.

From Taraba State, The Nation gathered that 10 petitions were received against the conduct of the governorship primary, four against the Senate primary and nine against the House of Representatives primaries, with all petitions rejected, a similar situation with Adamawa and Bauchi states, with only one senatorial and one House of Representatives seat in Bauchi upheld.

The situation is not different from the southwest zone, with six petitions treated from Ekiti against the conduct of the National Assembly primaries and rejected. Three House of Representatives petitions from Osun were also rejected.

From Ondo State, the panel upheld three petitions for Senate, referred one to the NWC, rejected two and upheld the five petitions for House of Representatives, saying that they won the primary and were substituted.

Of the two petitions received from Lagos, one was rejected for the Senate. The one for the House of Representatives was upheld. The panel also rejected two Senatorial petitions from Ogun and recommended that the third petitioner be adopted as the candidate saying stakeholder of the party in the areas agreed to adopt him as a sole candidate.

The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola, has said electricity supply in the country is improving slowly and that power problems cannot be solved by magic.

Total power generation stood at 3,729 megawatts as of 6am on Wednesday, according to latest data obtained by our correspondent from the ministry.

Transmission Substation, Lagos, commended the Transmission Company of Nigeria for the ongoing projects across the country.

“We have come to hand over this expanded transmission substation, the Ejigbo Transmission Substation, to the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company. This substation was built in 1970; the capacity was 60MVA then; except for the addition of another 60MVA, this community has grown exponentially; so they have exceeded the installed capacity here,” he stated.

The minister said President Muhammadu Buhari knew the substation required an expansion, adding that the capacity had been increased from 120MVA to 300MVA.

He stated, “Between that time and when President Buhari came three years ago, some people were there. But they will come back to you; so, when they come back, ask them if they didn’t know where to buy transformers.

“The problem of electricity is slowly being solved, one by one. Anybody will tell you he will do magic; tell him, ‘How?’ He should explain to you. We inherited 800 containers for power equipment left in the port for 10 years. President Buhari gave us approval, and we have recovered 690.”

According to Fashola, there are 90 transmission projects ongoing across the country, and some of the recovered of pieces equipment are being used for them.

“If you look at it, between 2015 and now, you ask yourself honestly: Are you spending more on diesel now or before? Are you running your generators for longer today or yesterday? So, are you seeing the power slowly staying longer? If you are truthful to yourself, you will know that it is better than yesterday. And we haven’t finished,” he said.

The Managing Director, TCN, Usman Mohammed, said the installation of the two units of 100MVA transformers at the Ejigbo Transmission Substation was funded by the World Bank through the firm’s project management unit.

He stated, “With the increase in the Ejigbo substation’s capacity, the TCN has substantially increased bulk electricity available in the substation for the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company to take to its customers. Consequently, electricity consumers in Ejigbo, Egbe, Oke-Afa, Shasha, Ikotun, Ijegun, and Idimu town will now have improved power supply from Ikeja Electric.”

“Other benefits include relieve of some overloaded feeders in Egbe, Shasha and Oke-Afa. Also, the Lagos airport will now have more load allocated to it. Improved power supply in these areas will positively impact the socio-economic development of the areas in particular and the economy at large.”

Ogun Domestic Debt Hits N106b Amid N7b Monthly IGR

The Ogun State domestic debt profile stands at N106 billion while its monthly average Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) is also N7 billion, it was learnt yesterday.

The Commissioner for Finance, Adewale Osinowo, who broke the news in Abeokuta, the state capital, said of the N106 billion debt burden, N14.5 billion was reportedly incurred from the bailout funds.

He was being grilled by members of the House of Assembly, presided over by the Chairman of the House Committee on Finance and Appropriation, Victor Fasanya.

The commissioner said the Ibikunle Amosun administration had paid all the state and local government pensioners till date.

On the finances of the state, he said the government would soon access N17.3 billion, the fourth tranche of the bailout fund, as the process for its release was being perfected.

According to him, the fund, which is domiciled at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), will be released as all conditions for its disbursement were being finalised with relevant agencies.

Osinowo assured the lawmakers that the government would continue to promote accountability and transparency in its activities.

The commissioner said 60 per cent of the bailout fund would go into the payment of workers’ salaries, gratuities and severance allowances, which he said are beyond the initial 50 per cent agreement with the Federal Government, while the remaining would be expended on social services.

He added that Ogun State had not accessed the N17.3 billion bailout funds, contrary to insinuations in some quarters that the government had misappropriated it.

Oshinowo reiterated that the previous bailout funds were used to offset cooperative deductions and other arrears of all categories workers in the state public service.

Listing the amount so far received, the commissioner said the state got N10.6 billion as first tranche; N5.7 billion for the second tranche and another N5.7 billion as the third tranche of the bailouts from the Federal Government.

Industrial crisis appears imminent as governors have announced that they would not be able to afford the agreed national minimum wage.

Governors under the aegis of Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF), who met on Wednesday night in Abuja, said though they were not against the upward review of the national minimum wage, they lacked the ability to pay the proposed N24,000.

Minister of Labour and Employment Chris Ngige had last week told reporters that while Labour unions were demanding N30,000 per month, Federal Government proposed N24,000 and state governors N20,000.

However, it is doubtful if the leadership of the labour unions would accept the N24, 000, which they claimed was “unilaterally” adopted by the Federal Government.

Indication to that effect emerged as the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has summoned an emergency meeting for next week to take a decision.

Chairman of NGF and Governor of Zamfara State, Abdulaziz Yari, who briefed journalists on the outcome of the meeting, disclosed that the governors also met with the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Ayuba Wabba, who briefed them on how many states complied with the agreement signed to clear salary arrears.


According to him, the issue was not just on agreed figure to be paid by the governors, but the “ability or resources to take care of that agreed minimum wage.”

Asked whether the issue of minimum wage was part of the agenda of the meeting, Yari said: “We didn’t discuss minimum wage because that is in the hands of the Federal Government, because it is on the Exclusive List. But like we said, we can do minimum wage on any amount we need but the issue is the ability to pay the minimum wage agreed. In the last meeting which the minister of Labour attended with the negotiation committee and also the committee that we also set up, we made it clear that we are not against the upward review of salary, we are in tandem with the NLC to get the minimum wage reviewed but the problem we are having is the capacity to pay what is agreed.


“As at today, most of the states are struggling to pay the N18,000 minimum wage. Some states are paying between 35 to 50 percent of the minimum wage and some states are owing salary. Ifwesaywearegoingtodo anupward reviewof the minimum wage, it is not about only reviewing it but how we are going to get the resources to cater for it.”

On the Paris Club refund which the Federal Government disbursed to states on the condition that they use larger percentage of the money to pay workers’ salaries, Yari said while some states had recorded some progress in line with the condition they signed with the Federal Government, others were still owing arrears

“We invited the national president of NLC to give us details on how some states performed. Some other states that are not up to date, where are they?

“So they have signed Memorandum of Understanding with the NLC at the national level and their representative in states on when they are going to overcome the issue of salary arrears.

“That has been done and it has been taken to the Central Bank (of Nigeria) governor to ensure that those states were also paid.”

However, the National Economic Council (NEC), which met yesterday failed to discuss the issue of a new national minimum wage despite threat by workers to embark on an indefinite strike.

According to Bauchi State Governor, Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar who briefed the press, “the issue of minimum wage was not discussed at NEC today.”

“Unfortunately that was not discussed at the National Economic Council meeting. Secondly, governors are part and parcel of the negotiation. The governors have not taken a decision either way because its a negotiating process and it’s still ongoing. We are represented by six governors in the committee. It’s a work in progress and am sure we will get to the promised land,” he stated.


On Wednesday, General Secretary of NLC, Peter Ozo-Esan, told an online media that the committee set up by the workers’ union had adopted (through a motion) to recommend N30,000 as minimum wage. According to him, the motion was moved and seconded by members from the labour union and the employers’ representatives.

Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, on October 10 after Federal Executive Council meeting had refuted media reports quoting Wabba as saying that the tripartite committee discussing the demand for new minimum wage had agreed to increase it from the current N19,200 to N30,000.

“Such information is not true,” he said.

Ozo-Esan insisted that the tripartite committee adopted a figure and “that is the only relevant thing in the issue.

“If Ngige is manufacturing something that was not agreed at the table, that is his problem. We have called our organs for an emergency meeting that will hold next week and the next step will be taken from there,” he said.

National President of United Labour Congress (ULC), Joe Ajaero, on October 16, said labour would not sign any agreement with the Federal Government on new national minimum wage if it was below N30,000.

NLC which had initially demanded a N50,000 minimum wage for workers, called out workers on a one week warning strike a fortnight ago.

All around the world, people refer to Christians as “believers,” but that’s a general colloquial communication that tends to bring Christianity into some mundanity. Yes, the Bible says, “And these signs shall follow them that believe…” (Mark 16:17), but when you believed, something happened. We didn’t “believe” to become “believers”; we believed to receive something: the God-life! In John 6:47, Jesus said, “…He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.” We believed so that we may possess “everlasting life”—the God-life.

We’re more than believers. To elucidate this further, let’s look at it this way: If you took an entrance examination into a certain institution, and you were successful, you’d become a student, right? Sure! Having already been admitted as a student, you wouldn’t call yourself a candidate or an applicant to the school anymore, because you’re now a student! You were an applicant, so you could become a student.

The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party has sent the name of the President of the Senate , Senator Bukola Saraki , to the Independent National Electoral Commission as a senatorial candidate .
The name of Saraki was among the list of candidates submitted to the commission in Abuja on Thursday night .
Saraki , who represents Kwara Central District in the Senate , was among the 13 presidential aspirants of the party .

He came third at the party ’ s national convention which was held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The PDP had held the senatorial primaries before that of the presidential primary .

While Saraki paid for the PDP nomination and expression of interest forms , it was however not clear if he paid for that of the Senate as well .

Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, a Kaduna-based Islamic scholar, has revealed that it took two years to reconcile former President Olusegun Obsanjo and his deputy, Atiku Abubakar, who is now the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The religious leader disclosed this in an exclusive interview with Daily Independent amidst controversy over his involvement in the recent reconciliatory meeting of the two political heavyweights in Abeokuta.

Also involved in the reconciliatory effort were Catholic Archbishop Matthew Kukah and Bishop David Oyedepo, General Overseer of the Living Faith Church.

According to Gumi, “Atiku has been seeking the forgiveness of Obasanjo for whatever transpired during the era of his vice presidency under Obasanjo. So, it is not a one day affair but a long term one.

“However, it materialised this time that we went there. Everything depends on the former president to agree to reconcile with him (Atiku Abubakar).”

The respected cleric revealed that it had come to his notice that some people claimed that he had been compromised, but he argued that it was not possible to be compromised when trying to assist people who are not in power.

“How can you be compromised? You can only be compromised if you are working for those in power. So, those making such comments are the ones compromised.

“Who controls the central bank, is it not the president? And, don’t tell me that they do not have power because all the people that rushed back to their party were very rich men. When they run to their party, they are declared clean, but when they run to other parties, they are declared corrupt.

“Even this Atiku that you are talking about was an APC man. Just because he left APC, they are castigating him now. What kind of injustice is that?”

Gumi frowned at the recent travel ban placed on 50 politicians in the country, insisting that it was an infringement on their constitutional rights.

He said Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State should be on that watch list.

Gumi was reacting to the recent viral video of Ganduje allegedly receiving bribe amounting to $5 million from contractors in the state.

According to him, “They have rights except if they are stopped by courts of law and not by the president. It is an infringement of the constitution and it is not the first time that they are infringing on the constitution.

“In fact, the president presides over national security issues that circumvent the constitution. That is criminality. I have been saying it. These are some of the dangers Nigeria is facing.

“And, moreover, if there is a list, it should be comprehensive. Did you not see the video of the governor of Kano State stuffing his ‘babanriga’ with dollars? He should be on the list there.”

Naira, yesterday, depreciated to N364.33 per dollar in the Investors and Exporters (I&E) window even as the volume of dollars traded dropped by 78 percent.

Data from FMDQ showed that the indicative exchange rate for the window rose to N364.33 per dollar yesterday from N363.96 per dollar on Wednesday, translating to 37 kobo depreciation of the Naira. The volume of dollars (turnover) traded on the window yesterday declined by 78 percent to $70.74 million from $317.11 million on Wednesday. On the other hand, the Naira yesterday was stable at N360 per dollar in the parallel market.

Human rights lawyer, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), said efforts had begun to secure release of former Governor of Ekiti State, Mr Ayodele Fayose, from Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) custody.

Ozekhome said this in an interview with the Newsmen in Abuja on Thursday.

Fayose, whose tenure as governor ended on Monday, had on Tuesday reported at EFCC office in Abuja to answer to some allegations levelled against while in office as governor.

Ozekhome said “Fayose’s lawyers are already taking steps to enforce his fundamental human rights by getting him released.


“Yes, his lawyers will go to court to enforce his fundamental human rights.

“The EFCC has no right to keep him for over 24 hours.

“If they have done that by obtaining a Magistrate Court’s Order that will be in the form of “holding charge” which has been declared unconstitutional and illegal by the Supreme Court.

“Holding charge is illegal. It is unconstitutional.’’


Ozekhome said that the section of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) permitting a magistrate to detain a suspect for 14 days was illegal.

According to him, any action outside the provisions of Section 35 of the Constitution which specifically provides for 24 hours, is illegal and unconstitutional.

He explained that the ACJA allowed for detention of a suspect for 14 days, but that Section 35 of the Constitution made it clear that a person could only be detained for 24 hours.

“So, when there is a clash between the statute, like the ACJA, and the Constitution, the Constitution prevails by virtue of Section 1(3).

“If they have gotten an order for two weeks from the magistrate court, it is unconstitutional,” Ozekhome stressed.

Recalls that Ozekhome was among Fayose’s supporters who accompanied him to the EFCC on Tuesday.

He had said that the present administration was governed by constitutionalism, and that it was a constitutional democracy.

When contacted for update of Fayose, especially on the detention, Head, Media and Publicity of EFCC, Mr Wilson Uwujaren, he simply said, “there is no update at the moment.”

Two APC Senatorial aspirants in Adamawa state, Binta Garba and Idris Ahmed nearly exchanged punches recently after clashing over an automatic ticket granted to Binta.

PoliticsNGR gathered that Binta, who is the incumbent senator representing Adamawa North, was declared the candidate of the party much to the chagrin of Ahmed and other aspirants.

Speaking to newsmen on Wednesday, Ahmed disclosed that the APC was not fair to them by not allowing the election to hold.

"We were there spending our money, she never went there and a day to the conduct of the primary they told us they have given Binta the ticket. Is that fair?

Even PDP with all their impunity has never done that. Let’s not forget that it is fairness (that) brought Buhari to power, otherwise, Jonathan wouldn’t have conceded defeat to him,” he said.

I spent over N150 million of my own money, no one from the party even consulted with us and I can assure you that there are well over 1000 of us across the country who were basically swindled. I don’t know how the party plans to win in 2019.”

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC Kaduna Zonal office has investigated a case of conspiracy and theft reported to the Commission by an exceptional father.

The father (name witheld) in April 2017 became a whistle blower after his son (then a secondary school student) intimated him that he had bought a house and a shop valued over N2 Million (Two Million Naira) only.

The information of the purchase shocked the father beyond his imagination as such he decided to make a formal complain to the Commission having perceived signs of fraud from his son's explanantion of how he got the money.

His son, Adamu, said he got the money through his phone line which after purchase he began receiving alerts running into millions of Naira.

Investigations into the matter began immediately and all parties involved were invited accordingly and their statements were taken as the principal accused person mentioned two other accomplicies in the crime.

In the course of investigations, it was discovered that Adamu withdrew monies in bits from a First Bank account number 3033389599 owned by one Porong Daniel Nash (a farmer in plateau state); and credited same to different accounts.

Consequently, all accused persons where arrested and recoveries were made to the tune of N939,000 (Nine Hundred and Thirty Nine Thousand Naira) only of which same was returned to the rightful owner by the Zonal Office.

A PDP Gubernatorial Aspirant in Benue state, Paul Orhii is battling for his life in an undisclosed hospital after being poisoned a day to the party's primaries.

Orhii has also been facing criticisms for selling all his billboards to an APC leader in the state, Barnabas Germade. Defending the action, Orhii said he had no intentions of spiting or attacking the party or anyone but had to make the move in order to raise money to pay his hospital bills.

Since the issue of the sale of my billboards to Chief Senator Gemade has generated so much unnecessary political heat, especially for those who might have paid for the billboards and for those who are so concerned about my political future, I feel that I should state my own side just for the records.

I met His Excellency Dr Gabriel Suswam for the first time in 2006 when he visited me in Houston to consult on his Governorship project. I was then working with Professor Hagher and I frankly told him so. But then I so much liked him as a person and because we enjoyed each other's company, and still do, we became very close friends and that friendship extended to our families. Therefore when he won the Gubernatorial Primaries in 2006 it was easy for me to agree to work for his election. I mobilized myself from Houston, arrived Benue, borrowed a very old car from a family friend and started following him around for the campaigns. Sometimes the car would stop on the way and I would fix it and meet them later. Luckily he won that election in 2007 and became the Governor. I went back to Houston. However luckily for me some circumstances played out and a friend from Houston, Dr Kase Lukman Lawal, an oil magnet introduced me to President Yar-Adua. With the help of this my very good friend, my Late Uncle His Lordship Justice Katsina-Alu, my Brother Chief Kaase Aondoakaa, SAN, who was then the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, and of course with the full approval of my friend, H.E. Dr Gabriel Suswam President Yar Adua later appointed me the DG NAFDAC. Naturally when I moved back to Nigeria my friendship with Gov. Suswam became even stronger and the two of us became more inseparable. When the time for his re-election came in 2011 I massively contributed, financially, morally, etc to enable him win that very tight race. I again massively supported him in 2015 for his Senate bid. Unfortunately we could not win. But we have remained the best of friends. It goes without saying that if I supported my friend Suswam in 2007 to win governorship, then supported him again in 2011 to win re-election and again supported his Senatorial bid in 2015, it was not totally unreasonable for me to expect him to support me in the only election that I had decided to run. Unfortunately due to circumstances that I came to understand were clearly beyond his control he could not support me in my gubernatorial bid, which I fully understand.

Therefore I did not sell my billboards to Chief Senator Gemade as my show of support against Suswam as is being speculated. Or to spite H.E. Suswam. The truth of the matter is that I arrived Makurdi two days before the Gubernatorial Primaries. The very next day, which was the eve of the primaries I was poisoned. That is why I was not even able to go out and greet the delegates when they arrived Makurdi, even though I had paid money for their transportation, booked and paid their accommodation for many of the delegations in Makurdi. I was actually on drips fighting for my life while my co-aspirants were going out there to meet and greet the delegates. I managed to go to the field the next morning but had to rush back to bed after the event. Everybody moved on as there were other primaries scheduled in other towns across the state and I was left there with no money and just a few friends and family members to fend for myself.

It was at this point that Mr Tyover Atetan, an aide to Chief Gemade reached me that Chief Gemade was offering to buy my billboards. At this point it was a matter of life and death as I badly needed money for my treatment and survival and was so glad to take the offer because I could never even have imagined that someone would offer me money for the billboards. So we made a deal and Chief Gemade promptly transferred the money to my account which enabled me to go to Lagos for treatment. It is quite unfortunate that people who would have loved to see me die from the poison are so peeved that I managed to sell my billboards to enable me afford treatment when they thought I had been abandoned to die from poisoning. But thank God I survived. I will be leaving for the USA next week for more detailed medical checks to make sure that no residue of the poison is still in my system. I still need more money and would appreciate any assistance.

Unknown to these people I am still very good friends with Suswam. He explained to me and I fully understand why he could not be there for me when I needed his political backing. Despite our tight schedules we still communicate almost on a daily basis. He knows that I still support his Senatorial ambition 100%.

In any case most of these people criticizing my decision should understand that as a full grown adult I have the right to chose friends, chose which politicians to support and even to chose political parties, and we have 91 of them. It is out of my personal choice that I have chosen to support Suswam or even to continue to stay in the PDP despite all the injustice that was done to me. I contributed massively to building the PDP and have financially supported many of its candidates since 2007, only to almost get killed just for coming out to offer myself for service to the state.

I hope this my side of the story should put all these stories to rest, at least in the minds of reasonable fair-minded persons. Those who know me know that I do not go two ways. My yes is yes. My no is no. If I am with you I am with you. I don't know how to support one person or one party in the day time and another person and another party at night.

A student killed seventeen people and injured at least 40 in a gun rampage at his school in Crimea today.

Vladislav Roslyakov, 18, stalked his college halls with a rifle, shooting 17 dead and then killing himself in the school library.

The teenager, who is thought to have obtained his gun with a hunting licence, also set off a homemade nail-bomb in the canteen which blew out the windows but did not kill anyone, according to reports.
Video showed terrified students running and screaming during the attack on Kerch Polytechnic College where the shooter was a fourth-year pupil.

One student said: 'There was a guy with a gun and shooting everyone he could find.' Another added: 'The walls were covered in blood, we climbed the fence to escape.'

Dozens of soldiers rushed to the school suspecting a terrorist attack but Russian police later described the killing as mass-murder.

Bloody victims, most of whom were teenagers, were seen being taken to hospital in ambulances and minibuses.

The director of the college said: 'There were lots of corpses, corpses of kids.'

After months on the run, the Liberia National Police (LNP) on Tuesday, arrested a Nigerian man identified as Nanda Morris Davies, for allegedly duping a Lebanese, Mohammed Bouelala, of US$500,000.

Abdul Samaad Jalloh and another defendant only identified as Collins said to be on the run are reported by the police to have aided defendant Morris in the alleged criminal scheme.

Davies, following his arrest Tuesday, October 16, was forwarded to the Monrovia City Court at the Temple of Justice where he was later sent to the Monrovia Central Prison pending prosecution.
The lawyer representing the defendant was seen at the court late Tuesday afternoon trying to secure his bond as the charges levied against Davies are bailable.

Court records revealed that around October 3, 2018 in Monrovia, the defendant with wicked and criminal intent purposely and intentionally conspired, induced and influenced the Lebanese national under the pretent to sell to him 14kg off gold and that having received the US$500,000 from him, the defendants out of deception presented to Boualala a fake gold.

“The alleged act being unlawful, wicked and criminal is in violation of Section 15.51 of the New Penal Law of Liberia,” the court record stated.

A former employee of Emzor Pharmaceutical Industries Limited, Chukwunonye

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi, on Wednesday, said the suspect, who wanted to escape to Cotonou, Benin Republic, was arrested in the Idiroko border town of Ogun State.

He added that Madubuike said he sold the controlled substance in order to meet his sales target.


The CP said, “On Tuesday, May 1, 2018, Emzor Pharmaceutical Industries Limited, reported a case of unlawful distribution of a controlled substance in breach of the drug laws of Nigeria by Chukwunonye Madubuike.

“It was alleged that while in the employment of Emzor, the subject had access to limited quantity of Emzolyn with codeine for the purpose of distribution to licensed retail pharmacies in his assigned territory, but due to his greed for money, he knowingly supplied the controlled drug to persons who are not supposed to have access to them in the first place contrary to the dictates of the drug laws of Nigeria.

“The suspect, who has been on the run since May 2018, was eventually arrested at Idiroko town of Ogun State while trying to escape to Cotonou, Benin Republic.

“Recall that the BBC did a broadcast on the activities of the subject, who was caught on camera selling restricted drug to a BBC undercover investigator, Adejuwon Soyinka, aka Mr Johnson.

“In his statement, he averred that he was only trying to meet his sales target and that the BBC man was introduced to him by one Pascal as a genuine businessman without verifying the former’s identity as a pharmacist. He said he regretted selling the controlled substance to unauthorised persons.”

ABUJA — The Senate and Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority, NSIA, yesterday warned the Federal Government against returning the country into a debt trap.

Though the Senate eventually approved President Muhammadu Buhari’s request for $2.78 billion Eurobond, it reiterated the concerns of the Bretton Woods institutions over rising public debt in Nigeria.


The World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, IMF, at the just-concluded annual meetings in Indonesia had warned that a trend of rising public debt in developing countries was undermining economic development in the affected countries.

The NSIA also warned that it is suicidal for the nation, the states and some businesses in the country to borrow dollar-denominated funds from the international financial market to finance infrastructure development in the country.

However, the Senate’s approval for the issuance of $2.786 billion from the international capital market was as contained in the 2018 Appropriation Act.

It also approved the issuance of $82.54 million to refinance the balance of $500 million matured Eurobond in the international capital market and advised the Federal Government to do everything possible to reduce or limit its request for more external borrowing and source other means of generating revenue internally.

According to the Senate, this will help avoid a cleverly managed re-conquest of the country through a debt overhang.

Resolutions of the Senate were sequel to the consideration of the report on the new external capital raising presented by Chairman of the Committee on Local and Foreign Debt, Senator Shehu Sani (APC, Kaduna Central).

Presenting the report, Senator Sani said: “That the issuance of both USD2.786 billion and USD 82.54 million from International Capital Market is for the part- financing of 2018 Budget, with particular interest to finance key infrastructure projects proposed in the 2018 Budget.

“The committee also observed that the capital raising of USD2.786 billion will result in a portfolio mix of Domestic Debt- 68 percent and External Debt- 32%, which is an improvement over the ratio of 70:30 as at June 30,2018. This brings the debts portfolio mix closer to the target of 60:40.

“The committee further observed that the issuance of these bonds will contribute to the implementation of the Debt Management Strategy which seeks to reduce the cost of borrowing, lengthen the maturity of the public debt stock, free- up space in the domestic market for other borrowers and help to increase Nigeria’s external reserves.

It would be recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari had written the Senate, seeking the approval of the lawmakers to raise external funding for the 2018 budget.

In the letter dated July 23, and read last week by the Senate President, President Buhari said the sum as approved in the 2018 Appropriation Act, would be used to finance deficits and key infrastructure projects in the 2018 budget.

FEC okays 6 transaction advisers on Eurobond

The Senate approval came as the Federal Executive Council, FEC, presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari, also yesterday approved six transaction parties to advise the federal government on the Eurobonds issuance and other securities at the international capital market.

The transaction parties are Citigroup Global Market Limited and Standard Chartered Bank as joint managers; FSDH Merchant Bank Limited as financial adviser; White And Case LLP, Banwo and Ighodalo as legal advisers and Africa Practice Limited as technical adviser on communication.

Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed, while briefing journalists in Abuja, said the transaction parties were expected to advise the government on “the structure and timing, as well as, documentation for the issuance” of the Eurobonds and other securities.

She said the approval was part of government’s commitment to the implementation of the 2018 Appropriation Act, adding that “consistent with government’s policy on development of infrastructure, the proceeds of the euro bond issuance will be deployed to fund critical capital projects in the 2018 Appropriation Act.”

An estimated N849.673 billion ($42.78 billion) is expected to be externally borrowed to finance part of the deficit in the 2018 appropriation Act.

While there are worries over Nigeria’s rising debt profile, which is estimated to have grown by 145 percent in the past three years, the government says there is room for more debt for Nigeria.

Explaining the nation’s debt-to-GDP ratio, Udo Udoma, Minister for Budget and National Planning, said Nigeria had a sustainable debt profile.

“Nigeria has a sustainable debt profile with ample room to borrow more whenever we may require doing so. Nigeria runs no debt risk and the Debt Management Office, DMO, carries out an annual Debt Sustainability Analysis to ensure that we stay that way,” he said.

It’s suicidal to borrow in dollars — NSIA boss

Meanwhile, the Managing Director of Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority, NSIA, Mr. Uche Orji, yesterday, warned that it was suicidal for Nigeria and some businesses in the country to borrow dollar-denominated funds from the international financial market to finance infrastructure development in the country.

FG looking beyond N-Delta for alternative gas sources – Kachikwu

Speaking at the just concluded Nigerian Gas Association, NGA International Conference and Exhibition in Abuja, Orji disclosed that the NSIA, which is the manager of Nigeria’s Sovereign Wealth Fund, SWF, took that path in the not too recent past and was yet to fully recover from the crisis that the currency mismatch caused the organization.

Orji noted that Nigeria, and, indeed, other African countries, would not develop if they continued to borrow funds in dollars and other major international currencies to finance their infrastructure projects, whereas their revenues were in their local currencies.

He said: “In terms of currency mismatch that necessitated the recent crisis that we are yet to recover from, why can’t you negotiate and price some of these things in local currency?

“It is suicidal to fund infrastructure in dollars when your revenue is in naira. It is not going to work. Africa and Nigeria would not develop paying for all of these things in dollars when your revenue is not only in naira. It is regulated, it is local currency and we have these mismatch situations.”

Orji further rued the NSIA’s first investment in the gas sector, blaming the challenges on currency mismatch and many other challenges in the gas sector.

“It has been very interesting in the last five years, especially when we started getting involved in the gas sector.

‘’The first investment had its challenge. We would not like to do any like that again; we had to restructure.

‘The main reasons that happened, is the issue of the mismatch in currency; there was also the issue of bad debt, payment terms were not adhered to; there were also environmental issues, with damages to pipeline. There were many challenges in the sector.

“However, we believe that the way to fund these projects is not from taking expensive bank loans; it is not from the limited equity that we have; we believe that there should be an opportunity for more private equity participation in the gas sector,’’ he said.

Orji also lamented the rate of gas flaring in the country, while commending the Federal Government for introducing new tariff structure for gas flaring.

He explained further: “It is quite disheartening to watch us flare gas as if it is useless. Every time you do that, it is equivalent to taking bundles of dollars to a stove and burning them.

“You cannot live in a country that is suffering from deforestation, yet we are flaring enough Liquefied Petroleum Gas, LPG, or gas equivalent that can create LPG in the market.”

Avoid debt burden — NLC

Reacting to the development, President of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Ayuba Wabba, advised the Federal Government to be careful on foreign loans and bonds to avoid unnecessary debt burden or traps.

Wabba said: “Even at our last National Executive Council, NEC, meeting, congress examined this issue of borrowing not only in Nigeria, but also the African continent as a whole. We declared as that in the past six years, Sub Saharan African governments have issued $81 billion in bonds alone to investors hungry for yield.

‘’This is in addition to several loans and bilateral debts. Also, bond yield has now jumped from 6% to 16% interest. Public debt in Sub-Saharan Africa has climbed to 50% of GDP. The case of Zambia with 59% of GDP as debt should be an eye opener to African leaders.

“We added by urging African governments that with the hidden condition and terms of these loans now coming into the open, our leaders should understand that there is no free lunch anywhere, even in Freetown. So, we need to be careful as a country to avoid sinking back into debt trap.”

It’s bad to borrow for consumption — Rewane

Also reacting was corporate Nigeria which kicked against the position of the federal government. Managing Director/Chief Executive, Financial Derivatives Company, Mr. Bismarck Rewane, taking sides with the Senate on the risk of Nigeria’s increasing foreign borrowing, said the warning from the Senate was necessary and welcome, noting that what made Nigeria’s foreign borrowing worrisome is that it is largely for consumption at expensive interest rate.

He said: “It is not the amount of debt that is the problem, it is the use of the proceeds of the debt and the cost of the debt.

“What we are borrowing for is to fund the budget deficit which is mainly recurrent. So in other words we are borrowing for consumption. That is not advisable for a country that is having growth issues.

“We need to borrow for capital expenditure (CAPEX). It is true that our CAPEX has increased from what it was in terms of ratio, which was 80 percent recurrent expenditure and 20 percent CAPEX, and now it is 30 percent CAPEX, but it is still far from where it ought to be. The United Nation Development Programme (UNDP) talk about 60:40 percent ratio in favour of CAPEX. So there is work to be done, plenty of work to be done, no doubt about that.

“Again the caution is necessary and it is welcomed. But the thing is that we have to fund the deficit in the short run. So the structure of the debt, the cost of the debt, it is foreign currency denominated loan. So if we are taking $2.8 billion at 5.2 percent per annum, that is quite expensive. And we are going to use it for consumption. So once we finish spending it, it is gone, it is finished.

“That is why the call for caution is welcomed. But I am sure the federal government and the ministry of finance are aware of the consequences, that is why they are making sure it is been taken with caution.”

FG digging in instead of digging out – Ezekwesili

Responding to the the $2.8 billion euro boned approval,Transperency Internation Boss, Dr.Obi Ezekwesili said, What it portend for the economy is that the Federal Government is digging in when they are suppose to be digging out. Already, the debt service to revenue is so high because it’s 69 percent today. what it’s mean it that 69 percent out of your revenue is use to service debt. that is not a sustainable situation to be in. I see the government quote all the time but that is a blunt quote in an environment when your GDP is not reflective of your productivity”.

“You measure your productivity by the revenue your GDP generate. if you cannot service your debt, you will be considered bankrupt . The Federal government found itself in this situation because they have refuse to engage in any key reform in the economy. According to the report the federal government released in 2017: all of Nigeria’s oil revenue is no longer sufficient to pay public sector salaries. As are 2 million people in the public sector and our Oil revenue cannot sustain them. So we have a situation where we have debt servicing, over head cost .”

It is a fait accompli — Chukwu

In his reaction, Johnson Chukwu, Managing Director/CEO, Cowry Asset Management, while acknowledging that the Senate only re-emphasised the earlier warning issued by the IMF on Nigeria’s debt position, stated that though the country does not have debt crisis as it stands, but caution that there is need to exercise restraints in further debt accumulation.

“The Senate warning is in consonance with the, IMF’s warning. Clearly, we don’t have a debt crisis as it stands today, but we have built up debt at a fast rate that if we continue at that rate, we are going to have a debt crisis. I think that is what IMF had warned about and that is what the Senate is obviously repeating that we need to be cautious of how we are accumulating debt.

“Interestingly, the borrowing, according to the government, is captured in the 2018 budget, which has been passed into law, so the Senate was constrained because they have passed an enabling law, which allowed that level of borrowing,” he said.

According to him, “given that the country has about 73billion dollar in debt position, which is about 19.4 percent of the GDP ($376 billion US Dollar), it behoves the executive arm of the government to stay away from additional provision for borrowing and should they not do that, the National Assembly should constrain them from factoring such level of borrowing in 2019 budget.

“For now, it is fait accompli and given that situation, the key thing is to prevent a worsening of the debt situation. It also behoves the executive and National Assembly to ensure that in preparing the 2019 budget, we do not have material borrowing captured borrowings into the budget”, he added.

It depends on the purpose – FBN Insurance boss

Reacting to the borrowing decisions Managing Director of FBN General Insurance, Bode Opadokun, said: “l don’t see anything wrong in borrowing, however, at the time you are borrowing, what do you want to use it for and what is the plan of paying back? If it is genuine borrowing that will be used for the purpose it is meant for, then the probability of paying back should not be a challenge.

“But l cannot speak for the government in the sense that we don’t know if what we are meant to understand is the reason for the borrowing is exactly what it is going to be used for. Personally l have done business in the past where l borrowed and paid back and that helped put my business in better position.

“We have seen instances where people borrow and that was the bane of their business, because they did not do their home work well.

“So borrowing is not the issue, but what do you borrow for and how do you want to pack back. The structure must be clear. If the intention is genuine and very clear. l don’t see anything wrong, but once it is the other way, l cannot be in support of that.”

We should be worried by funds usage – Stockbrokers

A Chartered Stockbroker/Managing Director, Sofunix Investment & Communications, Mr. Sola Oni stated: “In any country the issue of debt should be concerned of where the fund being borrowed is channelled to. The US is highly indebted, but the country invests the fund borrowed into productive use. The country invests a lot in infrastructure that helps for further production of goods.

If Nigeria can channel the borrowed money to infrastructure, then we don’t have cause to worry or panic but if it is diverted to other non-productive investment, then that should be our concern. The Senate need not to worry about the foreign borrowing since the federal government said it is cheaper when compared to domestic borrowings. If they don’t borrow bridging the infrastructure gap in the country would be a problem. So if borrowing can turn our industrial development, the better for Nigeria.

The Chairman, Association of Stockbrokers Houses of Nigeria, ASHON, Chief Patrick Ezeagau said: “Yes the International Monetary Fund, IMF has warned the government of the consequences of the excessive borrowing. But then, Nigeria has infrastructure gap that needs to be bridged.

So in my own view I dont think that borrowing is bad provided it is not diverted for consumption and recurrent expenditure. So, government can go ahead to borrow while senate should monitor the use of such money.

The Senate yesterday approved the request by President Muhammadu Buhari to secure a $2.786 billion foreign loan.

The loan is to be sourced from the international capital market as appropriated in the 2018 budget.

The upper chamber also gave its nod to the president’s request to borrow $82.54million to refinance the balance of $500 million matured Eurobond in the international capital market.

The Senate had on Wednesday October 10, 2018 considered Buhari’s request to borrow the funds and referred the matter to its committee on local and foreign debts for further legislative action.

Yesterday, the report on the matter was presented at plenary by the committee chairman, Senator Shehu Sani.

Sani said the committee found that issuance of both $2.786 billion and $82.54 million matured on July 12, 2018 with an interest of 5.125%.

He further stated that both approvals are for the part financing of the 2018 Budget, with particular interest in financing key infrastructure projects.

According to him, the committee however observed that “the external capital raising of $2.786 billion will result in a portfolio mix of domestic debt – 68% and external debt – 32%, which is an improvement over the ratio of 70:30 as at June 30, 2018.

He said the committee also found out that the issuance of bonds will contribute to the implementation of the debt management strategy, which seeks to reduce the cost of borrowing and that it will help to increase Nigeria’s external reserves.

The Senate committee advised that the federal government should reduce or limit its request for more external borrowing and source other means of generating internal revenue.

… Suspends ATM Maintenance Charges

Also, the Senate yesterday directed the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to suspend Automated Teller Machine (ATM) card maintenance charges being deducted from customers by banks.

The directive followed public outcry that commercial banks in the country are making excessive charges on ATM.

The Red Chamber yesterday invited the CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele, to appear and proffer explanations on why official charges approved by the apex bank are skewed in favour of the banking institutions against customers.

Specifically, Senate obliged its joint committee on Banking, Insurance and other Financial Institutions and Finance to investigate the matter and compel the CBN to suspend ATM card maintenance charges being deducted from customers.

The lawmakers are worried that there are several complaints from Nigerians concerning illicit deductions by banks, particularly on ATM maintenance charges.

Consequently, the Senate directed that the mandated committees should probe the propriety or otherwise of the charges to meet international practices.

Noting that the banks also make illicit charges per each withdrawal of N10,000, which is maximum amount through ATM card, the Senate requested commercial banks to quickly reconfigure their ATM machines to allow customers withdraw up to N40,000 at once.

To checkmate the situation, the upper chamber further urged the Consumer Protection Council to look into various complaints of bank customers on excessive charges.

The position of the Senate followed a motion by Senator Gbenga Ashafa (APC, Lagos East) tagged, “Illicit and Excessive Charges by Nigerian Banks on Customers Account with Particular Focus on Automated Teller Machine (ATM) Maintenance and Withdrawal Charges”.

In the motion, Ashafa stated that card users are charged N65 per withdrawal from the ATM after the third monthly withdrawal from the ATM outside that of the domicile bank of the said ATM user. He added that banks manipulate ATM cards and machines.

According to him, “the CBN, in 2017, increased the maintenance fees charged by banks on debit and credit card maintenance from N100 a year to N50 per month (N600 a year) as contained in its Guide to Charges by Banks and other Financial Institutions.”

He informed the Senate that a campaign tagged #Reform9jabanks began on twitter when a UK based Nigerian medical doctor, Harvey Olufunmilayo, lamented about the state of banks in Nigeria compared to those abroad.

Lawmakers who made contributions to the motion said the motion was apt and can ameliorate the plight of bank customers.

Akpabio Demands Saraki’s Impeachment

Meanwhile, despite Senate’s resolve last week Tuesday to abandon partisan issues and sentiments, former Senate minority leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio, yesterday called for the impeachment of Senate President Bukola Saraki.

Akpabio said he will not make any further contribution in the plenary as long as Saraki who is now a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presides as the Senate president.

He advised Saraki to take a cue from him and step aside like him (Akpabio) who tendered his resignation letter as minority leader when he defected from the PDP, which is in minority in the upper chamber, to the ruling APC.

Akpabio insisted that in all sphere of life and indeed in democratic setting, majority must always preside over the minority, adding that while minority should have its say, the majority should have its way for peace to prevail.

The former governor of Akwa Ibom who formally defected from the PDP to All APC at a mega rally held at the Ikot Ekpene township stadium on August 8, 2018 also asked that the Senate be properly constituted, saying Senators must sit according to political parties in the chamber.

Senator Akpabio’s reaction followed Senate President Saraki’s refusal to allow Akpabio to make contribution to a debate on the ground that he was not speaking from his rightful seat.

Saraki’s utterance caused temper to flare up among the lawmakers along party lines.

It almost degenerated to a physical combat when Senator Akpabio was denied recognition by Saraki to contribute to a motion raised by Senator Bassey Akpan in which he alleged that APC members in Akwa Ibom State were planning to cause mayhem ahead of the 2019 elections.

Saraki insisted that Akpabio was not sitting in the appropriate seat and won’t be recongnised to speak until he moved to his rightful seat.

Senate leader, Ahmed Lawan, countered Saraki, saying the Senate is not properly constituted, as Senators are not sitting according to political parties in the chamber.

When the deputy Senate president, Ike Ekwetremadu, got up to talk, former majority leader, Senator Ali Ndume interrupted, stopping him from making contributions too.

Senator Dino Melaye stood up and started walking up and down in the chamber scolding and shouting down at any APC Senator wanting to make contribution.

It all began when Saraki said, “Senator… eh… former minority leader, you know you can’t speak from there. You can’t. Go to your seat, when you get to your seat, I’ll recognise you”.

He asked the Leader of the Senate to proceed with other items on the Order Paper, but the Senate Leader, Lawan, stood up to defend Akpabio.

“If he decides to sit there, let him. There is no microphone there. Let us not take the Panadol for his headache. Let me advice that even though we have only six, seven months to go, let’s do what is right”, Lawan said.

At this point, the lawmakers began shouting at each other, as they tried to defend the parties they belong.

Efforts by the Senate president to call the lawmakers to order were unsuccessful, as some of the lawmakers were already on their feet fuming attacking themselves verbally.

When temper was eventually down, Senator Ndume raised a point of order and apologised to Senator Ekweremadu for interrupting him when he wanted to make his contribution.

The Senate president followed suit by apologising to Senator Akpabio, just as he insisted that his not recognising him was not done on grounds of partisanship.

“If you felt offended over the way I put it to you to make your contribution from your seat, I take it back. But it has to be noted that I don’t mean partisan with it’’.

Speaking with Senate correspondents after plenary, Senator Akpabio said, “There is nowhere a group of 10 people ever presided over a group of 80 people. People should emulate my example because I resigned my position as minority leader when I defected from the PDP to APC.

“There is need to restructure the Senate so that PDP, APC, ADC and APGA Senators will sit along party lines. Leadership should be restructured in such a way that minority has its say and the majority has its way.

‘’Senator Bassey said APC was trying to cause mayhem in Akwa Ibom. Does he have evidence? It is like an aggressor trying to turn self to victim. It is not a person that first goes to the Police station to report about a matter that eventually wins in most case.

“It is the PDP raising mayhem, killing and maiming those defecting from it to APC in Akwa Ibom. The very day the APC governorship candidate emerged, he was shot at from the roof of his house. So many other people have been shot at and even wounded or killed in Akwa Ibom. The state commissioner of environment was arrested yesterday for his involvement in the said organized crime in the state”.

FG Okays $2.9bn Eurobond To Fund 2018 Budget

Meanwhile, the federal government yesterday approved for the issuance of $2.9 billion Eurobond to fund capital projects in 2018 budget.

The minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed, disclosed this after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the presidential villa.

She noted that FEC also approved six Transaction Parties to advise the government on the issuance of $2.78 billion Eurobonds and other securities in the International Capital Market (ICM).

She said, “Today at the Federal Executive Council, we got approval for the issuance of $2.9 billion and other securities in Eurobonds from the international capital market.

“The focus of this approval is to enable us implement the borrowing external plan of N849.67 billion, equivalent of $2.786 billion, which is provided for in the 2018 Appropriation Act and this is to fund capital projects in 2018 Budget.

“We also, as part of that, got approval to raise the sum of $82.54 million to bridge the shortfall of the 500million Eurobond that matured on the July 12, 2018. In addition to this approval for the issuance of Eurobond, we also got the approval for payment to transaction parties and their respective fees like settling bills and expenses.

“We have, as parties for the transactions, two joint league managers, a combination of Citibank group as well as Standard Chartered Bank as joint league managers and FSB Merchant Bank as financial advisers, the White and Case LIP as legal managers and Ighodalo as legal advisers for Nigeria. The total cost for this advisory group is N374,618,889.

Ahmed further hinted that FEC approved livelihood of family improvement project in the Niger Delta.

Stating that the project is called Life and D to be funded with the sum of $60 million that would be a combination of loans and grants, Ahmed said the projects will be implemented in the Niger Delta States of Abia, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo, Imo, Ondo and Rivers State.

However, she pointed out that when the government reviewed the project in the nine states, they found that six of the states met their own requirements, while the three that did not will be assisted to enable them improve and join the team in 2019.

On capital release for the 2018 budget, she said, “Let me also move to the question that borders on capital releases. About two weeks ago, N460 billion was released for capital budget”.

On Paris Club Refund, the minister said President Buhari has given approval for the payment of the last Paris Club refund to the states but the approval came with some conditions.

She continued: “Those conditions that Mr President gave is that we must show that the states have used the previous refund for payment of salaries and they will use this one also for payment of salaries.

“The states that were not paid are Akwa Ibom, Rivers and Imo because they had some deficiencies and the agency that is handling it is working to bridge the gap”.

On the controversy surrounding the balance of payment for ex-staff of Nigeria Airways, she said, “The approval given for payment of entitlements to the ex-staff of Nigeria Airways was N45 billion and because of paucity of funds, Mr President gave approval for the payment of 50 per cent of N22.6 billion. We hope in 2019 to pay the balance.”

And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint (Luke 18:1).

There’re many things happening in our world today that call for our importunity in prayer. If we must change things in the direction of God’s purpose and plan, then we must keep interceding for our nations and the environments in which we deal. We must also pray for the leaders of nations.

In 1 Timothy 2:1-3, we’re admonished to pray for kings, and for all that are in authority, that we may lead a peaceable and quiet life in all godliness and honesty. This isn’t something we do once and go to sleep. The Bible says, “...The earnest (heartfelt, continued) prayer of a righteous man makes tremendous power available [dynamic in its working]” (James 5:16 AMPC). Notice the word, “continued”; we’re to continue in intercession for the nations, leaders, and peoples of the world. If we want peace in our nations and in our environments, then we must pray in line with God’s Word.


Out of ignorance, many blame God for the things that go wrong in their lives and in our world: the troubles, the wars, earthquakes, rainstorms, mudslides, floods, wildfires, and other disasters. What such people have failed to realise or are unaware of is that the responsibility, as well as the authority to establish the will of God on the earth and keep Satan and his demons in check, rests with us—the Church.

It’s our responsibility to ensure that whatever changes we seek in our lives as individuals, in the lives of others, and in the nations of the world, are effected through intercessory prayers. Never think that your prayer isn’t making any difference; you make great impact when you pray. Therefore, continue in prayer for your country, for God’s people, and ministers of the Gospel; for the leaders and those in positions of authority; for the sick, needy, and those in pain. Even when you don’t “feel” like praying, pray!

Always stir yourself and respond to the call and urgency of prayer from your spirit. When you do this consistently, intercession will become a part of you, resulting in great changes in your life, in the lives of others, in your nation, and in your immediate environment, to the glory of Christ.

PRAYER

Dear Father, your righteousness prevails, and is established in the nations of the world, and in the hearts of men, as your children all around the world proclaim the truth of the Gospel. The hearts of the leaders of nations are mantled with wisdom to walk in your will, and fulfil your purpose, which is the spread of the Gospel to the ends of the earth, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Why we support Atiku/Obi Ticket – Lecturers, students

Lecturers from Universities in Nigeria, particularly South-East and South-South yesterday agreed to work for the candidate of Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and his running mate, former Governor Peter Obi in the 2019 Presidential Election.

The lecturers under the aegis of Academic Democrats took the decision yesterday after an extensive meeting in Awka where they examined the manifestoes of the major candidates. They said the contents of Atiku and Obi joint ticket showed that there was hope for Nigeria, if they were elected.

The meeting agreed that the joint ticket of Atiku and Obi would serve the country better in actualizing restructuring, good governance and better life for its citizens. The said they would follow up the meeting of today with sensitization tour of various states in the country particularly South-East and South-South to meet other academics to enable them join forces together to ensure victory for Atiku and Obi in 2019 general elections.

Speakers including the Academic Democrats convener, Dr Chinedu Onyeizugbe , Prof Chinyere Stella Okunna, Prof Uche Nwogwugwu, Prof Emenike Obi and Prof Frank-Collins Okafor, among others, who buttressed the need why academics should support the aspiration of Atiku and Obi in 2019, agreed to embark on advocacy for the candidature of Atiku and Obi in order to ensure Nigeria is restructured to give room for democratic legacies currently lacking in the state.

Similarly, Students in the South-East under the aegis of Student Community Voters (SCV) South-East yesterday endorsed the nomination of former Governor Peter Obi as the running mate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. Their endorsement was contained in a statement signed by Right Hon Ezeukwu Christopher Formula, Chairman Student Community Voters , SCV and Speaker, Students Representative Council (SRC) , Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka , Anambra state and Comrade Chimezie Fortunatus Izuchukwu, Secretary Student Community Voters and President Students Union Government University of Nigeria, Nsukka , Enugu State.

The students, while commending Atiku for nominating Peter Obi as his running mate said Obi was eminently qualified and had the solidarity of youths across the nation, particularly the students who he had won their hearts.

They described the choice of Obi by Atiku as demonstration of “political sagacity.” Their words: “In the same vein, we laud the exercise, the leadership and members for their political sagacity on the choice of Peter Obi, a resourceful personality.

Chief Peter Obi’s leadership qualities has endeared him to many particularly, the voting youth population , students inclusive across Nigeria. Obi’s managerial skill is not in doubt as he is an expert in fund and human management.”

A Lawyer, Lukman Esq, was allegedly stripped off his clothings by some policemen at A-Division in Olorin, Kwara state while attempting to secure the release of his client who was in their custody.

*DISBANDMENT OF OSUN ELECTION PETITION TRIBUNAL IS AN ATTEMPT TO COMMIT A SECOND ROBBERY AGAINST US -PDP*

The Osun State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has described the disbandment of the Osun state Governorship Election petition tribunal as an attempt to commit a second robbery against the people of Osun State.

The Party's position is contained in a Press statement issued by the State Chairman, Hon Soji Adagunodo and made available to newsmen in Osogbo.


The party's statement reads "We receive with shock and utter disappointment the news of the disbandment of the Election petition tribunal constituted to hear the petition arising from the conduct of the last governorship election in Osun state.

The disbandment of the tribunal barely 24 hours after the submission of the petition by the Governorship candidate of the PDP, Senator Nurudeen Ademola Adeleke poses serious threat to the free and fair administration of justice in the hearing of the petition.

The Peoples Democratic Party is concerned that the All Progressive Congress and indeed the Federal Government appears to be breathing down on the top echelon of the judiciary to constitute a new panel which will be pliable and thus compromise the integrity of the tribunal as a means to manipulating the outcome of the judicial process in favour of the APC.

We equally have it on good authority that the disbandment of the Osun State Governorship Election petition tribunal is one of the devices the APC plans to use to delay the commencement of hearing of our petition with a hope that the constitutionally prescribed trial period of hearing would not be met.

The PDP regards this as a continuation of the desperate antics of the APC to frustrate the genuine desire of the good people of Osun State to be governed by a lawfully elected Governor whose mandate was brazenly stolen on the 22nd of September, 2018.

We are by this notice calling the attention of the general public, the Nigerian Bar, Civil Society organisations, the International community especially the US, UK and EUROPEAN UNION to this development regarding the hearing of the Osun State Governorship Election petition which ought to commence now.

We do earnestly hope that Nigerians of good conscience will rise up in defence of the country's democracy and speak out against this attempt to muzzle the judiciary which is supposed to be the last hope of the ordinary citizen.

Our party shudders at the thought of the dire consequences which an attempt to compromise the judiciary will have on the peace and security of Osun State in particular and Nigeria in general.

We are thus compelled to passionately appeal to the Chief Justice of the Federation as the head of the Nigerian judiciary to pay closer attention to the constitution and general conduct of the Governorship Election petition tribunal in Osun State and save our democracy from an avoidable mishap which may result from any form of manipulation of the judicial process to favour the ruling party.

The nation ’ s foreign exchange reserves have dropped to a seven - month low , losing $1. 02bn in the 13 days to Monday , latest data from the Central Bank of Nigeria showed on Wednesday .
The external reserves , which stood at $44. 30bn on September 28, fell from $44. 02bn on October 2 to $43bn on October 15.
The reserves, which rose to a high of $47. 865bn on May 10, have dropped by $4. 86bn in five months .
As of March 5, the reserves stood at $43. 12bn , up from $42. 75bn on March 2, according to the CBN data.


Last week, the International Monetary Fund said Nigeria needed to be cautious about the use of its foreign exchange reserves, saying oil prices could decline at any time .
The IMF , in its latest Regional Economic Outlook said tighter global financial conditions resulting from faster - than-envisaged monetary policy normalisation in advanced economies, or a sudden shift in investors’ sentiment could constrain financing and growth for many sub- Saharan African countries.

“ Higher US interest rates and a stronger dollar also heighten risks, as observed historically in emerging and developing economies. In particular , the probability of a large reversal in foreign flows in sub- Saharan Africa is significantly higher the US interest rates go up, ” the fund added .
The Director, Corporate Communications , CBN, Mr Isaac Okorafor, explained early this month that the external reserves had been going down recently because of higher yields in the United States .

Okorafor, however , gave an assurance that at the current level of $44bn, the reserves were sufficient to take care of the nation ’ s import bill for 17 to 20 months , much more than the three - month standard recommendation .
According to him , some foreign investors who have gone to emerging markets to take advantage of the high yields have had to go back to the US because of better opportunities there at the moment .


“ The drop in our forex reserves is basically as a result of the capital flow reversals arising from rising interest rates in the United States . You will recall that the Federal Reserve has been raising rates and has even given guidance that this would continue in the near term, ” he added .

Quote:Achinike William-Wobodo Esq., a lawyer in Rivers State, has sued Governor of the state, Nyesom Wike, for allegedly forging his Age Certificate in documents he presented to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

William Wobodo instituted the law suit against Wike and INEC at the Federal High Court (Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/1020/2018), pursuant to Section 182(1)(j) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).

In the suit, he asked the court to disqualify Wike from participating in the 2019 Rivers State governorship election.

The complaint of the Applicant was that in 1999/2000, when Wike intended to contest for the Obio/Akpor Local Government Area Council (LGA) chairmanship election, he was less than 35 years, which was the minimum age qualification at the time for contesting the LGA Chairmanship.

In order to qualify himself for that election, Wike allegedly got someone who deposed to an Affidavit that he was born on March 13, 1963, which made him eligible for that election. In the said affidavit, allegedly made in 1986, there was copious reference to Obio/Akpor LGA, which was not in existence as of 1986. The LGA was only created in 1989.

Curiously, the affidavit, titled ‘Statutory Declaration of Age’, was also allegedly deposed to at the High/Chief Magistrate Court, yet had a stamp, purportedly of the Probate Registry. There was no identification or stamp of the person who allegedly administered the Oath as Commissioner for Oath as required by Oaths Act 1963. The Applicant alleged that the Governor had reasons to have known that the age declaration, which he presented to INEC as his Age Certificate, was forged — because even his date of birth earlier submitted in his documentation with INEC was December 13, 1967.

It was alleged that in the buildup to the 2015 governorship election in Rivers State, some social media platforms published that the Governor had an unresolved conflict around his age and threatened to publish same. It was in a bid to maintain consistency in his age that Wike re-presented the allegedly forged Certificate of Age to INEC, which has now put him into a stronger dilemma.

The applicant gave particulars of alleged forgery, which include: (1) that the document lied against/about itself; (2) that the content was made of manifest inconsistent, inexplicable and irreconcilable falsehood; (3) that the information regarding the age of the Governor is false, and to the knowledge of the Governor; (4) that the Governor intended that INEC should act on the document as genuine; (5) that INEC acted on the document as genuine; (6) and that the Constitution of Nigeria talks about presentation of forged certificate, it will be immaterial that the Governor claims he did not forge the document by himself.

A very close source to Wike, who asked not to be named, revealed that the Governor and his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), were doing everything to suppress and frustrate the case. The source claimed that Wike admits that the case is a very bad one and that the timing has made the situation even worse.

Our source also revealed that the Governor had hoped that the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) would not have been able to decipher a cause of action from the certificate saga. He expressed shock that Wobodo was able to weave a very strong case out of the situation.

Wike and his team have resolved that their strategy would be to frustrate the case; right now, he has directed his personal staff not to receive service of any court processes.

SaharaReporters called Wike on his mobile phone to get his reaction, but he neither answered nor returned the calls.

The applicant was also contacted, but he simply said it was not time to speak on the matter.

“Please, this is not the time for me to speak about this matter,” he said. “My priority now is to serve the Governor and to have him appear in Court to respond to the issues. We can speak afterwards.”

Gbenga Olawepo and Fela Durotoye: The clash of new political titans 

Democracy activists like Chief Gani Fawehinmi and Alhaji Balarabe Musa who championed the right for individuals to form political parties would probably be amused by the emergence of 91 political parties in the country. 

Now the soundness or otherwise of the parties is turning into an issue. Within nine months between December 2017 and last August, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, registered 44 political parties bringing the number of political parties in the country to 91. 

Fela-Durotoye and Gbenga Olawepo Of the 44 newly registered political parties only few could have compared with the Alliance for New Nigeria, ANN, which was seen as one of the most potent threats to the existing two-party domination of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. 

The ANN had styled itself as a party of technoticians, meaning, a group of professionals who had devoted themselves to positively changing their political environment. However, less than a year after the party was registered, the enthusiasm that followed the birth of the party is now being enveloped by controversy.

The party was championed by Dr. Jay Osi Samuels, a health entrepreneur and some like-minded professionals who believed that they could help change the narrative of politics being a bad game. 

However, less than a year into the road, even the professionals have been caught in the bug with the ANN being seen by some as just another political party. Now the party has produced two presidential candidates from parallel conventions with the acclaimed motivational speaker, Fela Durotoye emerging in one convention and Mr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim emerging in another convention. 

FD as he is popularly called emerged at a convention conducted by Mr. Emmanuel Dania who succeeded Samuels as national chairman. However, that convention was marred by issues, notably the absence of a quorum with only seven states in attendance whereas the party has presence in 28 states. 

By the regulations, a valid convention should have had at least 19 states. The way the convention was organised led to suspicions about a hidden agenda.

The former chairman of the party, Dr. Osi Samuels, was said to have impressed upon Dania the need to do the needful by organizing first, ward, local government congresses before going ahead with the national convention that would produce the presidential candidate of the party. “It got to a point I had to ask Dania if he had other motives for insisting on organizing the presidential primary of the party,” Samuels told Vanguard. “He was claiming that since we had submitted a letter to INEC, it meant we had to go ahead. 

I told him that was no big deal that all we needed to do was send a letter to INEC informing them of the postponement. I even took him to INEC office not knowing he was going ahead with the script of those who were sponsoring him to destroy ANN.” The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Akin Oyebanji, told Vanguard that what Dania and his team did could not stand any legal scrutiny. He said at least, for them to have a presidential convention that could be respected by the law, at least 19 of the 28 states where ANN had already registered presence must be represented. 

It was indeed surprising because Durotoye was absent at the August 10 national convention that produced Dania as national chairman. “It was strange that Durotoye and Dania later became best of friends,” a member of the party told Vanguard. It was against the background of these developments that a new national convention was held after the majority of the members of the National Executive Committee, NEC met and removed Dania as national chairman and brought back Samuels to the position of national chairman. 

The convention ratified his candidature through a voice vote following the earlier withdrawal of another presidential aspirant, Alhaji Ibrahim Eyitayo Dan-Musa. Other presidential aspirants who had earlier indicated interest in the party’s ticket did not present themselves for screening by the party. 

The convention also ratified the strategic alliance between ANN and another political party, Peoples Trust, PT, in the single-minded mission of rescuing Nigeria. Before the ratification of the candidature of Olawepo-Hashim, the convention had approved the expulsion of the suspended national chairman of the party, Pastor Emmanuel Dania and the deputy national secretary, Mr. Osita Okonkwo for alleged anti-party activities. 

In Dania’s stead, the pioneer national chairman of the ANN, Dr. Jay Osi-Samuels, who had at the last convention of the party in Abuja stepped aside, returned to the position and was ratified by the convention. 

Olawepo-Hashim, who was elated at the decision by the delegates to elect him unopposed, said on the occasion witnessed by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, that he was more than ever committed to the mission to rescue Nigeria from the stranglehold of underdevelopment and economic backwardness. 

He said he would vigorously pursue the mandate given to him by the party, promising to deploy it to unite Nigeria, create jobs and put a smile on the faces of Nigerians.

According to him, “Our people are tired of poverty; they want jobs, training for unskilled youths, support for farmers as well as the young and the old.

“There is no time for small boys’ politics on the way to the Promised Land,” Olawepo-Hashim said, “there are political generals in this party, and we will not surrender to political boys’ scouts and girls’ guides.”

The presidential candidate says Nigeria has no future under the people who destroyed the nation's past.

Presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has taken a stab at former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, for his public endorsement of his former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, who's also contesting in the 2019 presidential election.
Atiku was elected the presidential candidate of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) at the party's national convention in Port Harcourt on October 7, 2018, and was publicly endorsed days later by Obasanjo who had previously been one of the most vocal opponents of his long-standing presidential ambition.

According to Sowore, who's contesting for the position of president on the platform of the African Action Congress (AAC), Obasanjo's sensational u-turn over Atiku's suitability for the presidency proves that he's dishonest and unpatriotic.

He said this while addressing the public at a summit, "African Leadership In The Millenium", a part of Felabration 2018, in Lagos State on Monday, October 15, 2018.

Sowore narrated to the public how Atiku had failed to gain the endorsement of Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka, and how he had to run to Obasanjo afterwards.

He said, "They (Atiku and his campaign team) had to leave Soyinka with their tails in-between their legs.

"Of course, the moment they saw that Soyinka could not be fooled, they went to that man in Ota who's always speaking from both sides of his mouth - a dishonest, unpatriotic, inhuman Obasanjo.

"The usual unpatriotic, inhuman and wicked Obasanjo invited Atiku to his house and told us that he has now forgiven Atiku. The same Atiku he claimed that God will not pardon him if he ever recommended him to be president of Nigeria.

"He recommended him again to go and destroy Nigeria. If it is true that there's God and God doesn't punish Obasanjo this time, so many of us will stop going to church."

Buhari is a useless man - Sowore
Sowore further took a stab at one of his biggest opponents at next year's polls, President Muhammadu Buhari, noting that history has been kind to the people that destroyed Nigeria.

He said Nigeria has no future if any of 75-year-old Buhari or 72-year-old Atiku is allowed to emerge victorious in the 2019 presidential election.

He said, "Sometimes, we don't celebrate our own. We don't celebrate the contributions that we've made at different times in this country. And that's why I think they don't teach history anymore. Because if we had history in our curriculum, somebody would have taught our children that Obasanjo is a bad person, that Babangida is a thief, that Atiku was a Customs officer who made it by stealing, that Buhari is a useless man. We didn't need Donald Trump to tell us Buhari is lifeless.

"But here we are in 2018, there is a debate about who to choose between the worst and the baddest. And we're all here still romanticising about what Nigeria should be in the future.

"Let me tell you, Nigeria has no future with these guys. It's the truth. We have no future because people who destroyed your past cannot guarantee you any future."

We need revolution in 2019 - Sowore
Sowore said Nigerians cannot hope to simply have power voluntarily transferred from one generation to another and must fight for it through a deliberate revolution.

He pointed out that the system is rigged to keep the old establishment in power and that Nigerians must resist it so as to actualise the country of their dreams and not the one of their ineffective leaders.

He said, "The country you're seeing today is the country of their dreams. The country without roads, hospitals and schools. It's the country of the dreams of the Babangidas, the Obasanjos, the Abubakars and the Buharis of this world.

"The solution is a revolution. We're not going anywhere without adding the revolutionary fervour to this coming election.

"Anyone who's still under the illusion that these old baggers, as we call them, will hand over power voluntarily to us, we're deceiving ourselves.

"Anyone under the illusion that the plastic cards that we refer to as permanent voter's card (PVC) will guarantee you a transfers of power from one generation to another, you're wasting your time.

"Of course a few of you might vote, but your votes will not count because it's been designed to fail from the beginning."

The 2019 presidential election, scheduled for February 16, 2019, is expected to be keenly-contested between Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Atiku who served as vice president between 1999 and 2007 and lost in the 2007 presidential election.

The boy was caught by their neighbours and reported to the little girl’s parents. Her parents then reported the assault to the police at Ayobo Division and he was arrested. The matter was transferred to the Gender Section of the State Police Command for further investigation.

Source scooped that the boy admitted that he attempted to have sex with the victim but was unable to penetrate her because of the size of his joystick.

However, the police found him culpable and charged him before the Ogba Magistrates court for rape and threatening to kill the victim.
When he was arraigned before the court, he pleaded not guilty.
The prosecutor, Mr. Christopher John, informed the court that both the defendant and the victim were minors and asked the court to use its discretion to determine the next line of the action.
The Presiding Magistrate, Mr. Peter Nwaka, admitted the boy on bail with the sum N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.
He was remanded in custody pending when he will perfect his bail condition.

The matter was adjourned till 22nd October, 2018.

A randy male Zimbabwean student at the Midlands State University has been arrested for stealing panties from the washing lines of female students.

The Police were called to a house in Nehosho, a neighborhood of Gweru popular with students, on Sunday after two female students reported the bizarre incident.

Police raided Prince Danda’s room and found him with a stash of women’s underwear.

Police were able to locate the owners of four pairs, belonging to the two female students who saw him take their panties.

Danda, a journalism student, was arrested and is due to appear before a Gweru magistrate on Tuesday, charged with theft.

Sources at the university told ZimLive the two students told police that after they had confronted Danda, he still went ahead and took the panties.

“He told the two girls that he was going to do something to the panties and when he’s done, they will both want to sleep with him and they won’t be able to turn down his advances,” said a fellow student familiar with the matter.

Another source says Danda was asked by the police why he steals panties and his response was that he uses them for masturbation.

On his Facebook page, there is evidence that Danda regularly entertains sexual thoughts.

Earlier today, eight suspected ritual killers, including a woman were paraded by the Nigeria Police Force after they were arrested with 11 human skulls in Ilorin, Kwara.

The suspects identified as : Azeez Yakubu, principal suspect, Ahmed Yahaya, Abdulfatai Kadri ( Vigilante Commander), Aishat Yunisa, Lukman Saka, Abdulganiyu Bamidele, Soliu Ayinde and Abdulrasaq Babamle, were arrested by the special IGP Monitoring Unit. 

Azeez Yakub a.k.a Baba Muri (Principal Suspect) who is a notorious armed robber and have been arrested, charged to court and convicted to prison severally. This suspect now in Police custody has made confessional statement to the Police investigation Team, he confessed and admitted that one Abdulfatai Kadri a.k.a (Adedoyin), the vigilante commander in Adeta Zone, introduced him to the business and also supplies the human skulls and other body parts for him to sell.

Eleven (11) Human skulls were recovered from his possession during police search on his residence. The principal suspect confessed that Abdulfatai Kadri has brought to him Twenty (20) human skulls that he exhumed from the Ilorin Community Central Burial ground situated after idl-praying ground in Ilorin, Kwara State.

He further admitted that Abdulfatai Kadri a.k.a (Adedoyin) usually brings in the human heads to him in batches of Four (4), six (6), Eight ( for safe keeping and usually collect them within a day or two, and also informed him of the personalities in Ilorin and other he usually supply the heads to.

Abdulrasaq Babamole was equally mentioned by the Principal suspect, Azeez Yakub to have bought one (1) human skull from him. Powder suspected to be grinded human bones was recovered in his possession. He has also confessed to the crime admitting his criminal role

Aishat Yunisa a.k.a Iya Alagbo was mentioned by the principal suspect, Azeez Yakub to be a member of the gang who deals in selling of human body parts. During interrogation, she confessed and admitted to have supplied Two (2) human skulls she obtained from Azeez Yakub to one Ahmed Yahaya and Lukman Saka

Ahmed Yahaya and Lukeman Saka were indicted in the confessional statement made by the Principal suspect, Azeez Yakub. They confessed to have bought two (2) human skulls from the principal suspect through Aishat Yunusa, grinded for their usage and rituals. 

Abdulfatai Kadri a.k.a (Adedoyin) is a vigilante Commander in Adeta Zone indicted by the Principal suspect to have introduced him to the business and also supplies the human skull and other body parts for him to sell. He is still being investigated on his criminal roles in the incident.

Soliu Ayinde a.k.a Baba Fawasi – this suspect also in police custody confessed and admitted to be a member of the syndicate who receives human parts from both Abdulfatai Kadri a.k.a (Adedoyin) the Vigilante commander and Azeez Yakub the Principal suspect. In his possession was recovered human bones cut-off from the leg of one of their victims. He admitted to the Police investigators that the Principal suspect Azeez Yakub and Abdulfatai Kadri a.k.a (Adedoyin) are working together. At a time he requested for human skull from Azeez Yakub, in his presence, Azeez Yakub called Abdulfatai Kadri a.k.a (Adedoyin) to bring the human skull after collecting Fifteen Thousand Naira N15,000 from him.

Abdulganiyu Bamidele: He confessed and admitted to buying human skull from the principal suspect, Azeez Yakub and supply same to his friend one Kayode still at large..

Just yesterday, i was travelling to Ado-Ekiti from the North in order to witness the inauguration of my newly-elected Ekiti Governor, it was quite an adventurous trip for me tho.. To mention afew: the Toyota Corolla that broke down on the road after driving for 20 minutes, the unreliable Honda ball-joint that pulled off the track at a speed bump, the impressive sights of the ongoing construction of Dangote's Obajana/Kabba road giving travellers an alternative bypass to the Okene/Kabba route, the Ekiti kid (at the road-side) that sold 12 pieces of banana for 100naira (equivalent to that of 400naira in Abuja) and the likes... 

Incidentally, a truck heading towards the Northern Nigeria from the South-West got derailed along the deterioriating Kabba/Omuo-Ekiti Federal Road (specifically at Ikoyi-Ijumu town in Kogi State). 

As theorized by me, the ugly incidence occured due to the state of the poorly maintained road while the driver was trying to dogde the big pot-holes in a quest to get a head-on to the North... 

Averagely, the ETA - Expected Time of Arrival of travellers between Omuo-Ekiti to Kabba, Kogi State should not be more than 25 minutes @ 120kmph, but the ETA is now roughly more than 1hour, you can hardly "Pedal to the Metal"!!!

The first question that flashed my mind when i had a sight of the incidence was that: "what if an innocent vehicle was passing by the trailer?" but we thank God that nothing of such happened. 

It should be noted that most of the auto-crash incidence that occured in the past are often traceable to bad roads... However, i will not deny the fact that the Federal Government has been trying all viable means to fix the transport infrastructure of the Nation, but, i will like her to shift more interventional attention in fixing some deterioriating Federal Roads, such as this of Omuo-Ekiti/Kabba road which is one of the major link between the southern and northern Nigeria.

Lastly, i need to note that this particular road has been in a deterioriating state for several years without any effort to get it fixed, I hereby use this medium to reach out to FERMA (Federal Road Maintenance Agency) to yield to this wake up call.

Unidentified gunmen, on Wednesday morning, killed two mobile policemen attached to International Breweries, located along Nnamdi Azikiwe bypass, Kaduna, Kaduna State.

The gunmen, according to unofficial sources, came calling around 5:00a.m and started shooting at policemen in sight leading to instant death of two officials and five others that were critically injured.

The Command Public Relation Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police Yakubu Sabo, told the News Agency of Nigeria that the policemen were on patrol when they were killed at 5:25 a.m.

“Some unknown armed men attacked our policemen who were on foot patrol along Nnamdi Azikiwe Expressway by IBBI company in  Kakuri area of Kaduna State.

“After a fierce gun duel, two of our men and a civilian driver were killed and five other policemen sustained gun injuries and are receiving treatment at a hospital in Kaduna State,” Sabo said.

According to him, the attackers did not take away any arms as some were forced to retreat with bullet wounds.

He disclosed that detectives have been mobilized to the area with a view to track down the fleeing killers and bring them to justice.

Rosemary Chukwuma has given Team Nigeria their first gold medal at the ongoing 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina as she returned 11.17 seconds in the women‘s 100m final event, yesterday. Julien Alfred from Santa Lucia took silver, while Gabriela Anahi Suarez from Ecuador got bronze. A 180-member caucus of former National Assembly lawmakers from the South East region has insisted that the former governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, was the best choice as the running mate to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.



A former member of the House of Representatives and spokesman of the caucus State, Ogbuefi Ozomgbachi, made the ex-lawmakers’ position known when he briefed newsmen in Abuja, on Tuesday.

He also lauded the former Vice President’s foresight in choosing Obi as his running mate.

The 180-member caucus noted with dismay the “needless and unhealthy controversies so far generated by Obi’s nomination,” which “must be nipped in the bud to stop further embarrassment.”

It, however, added that the greatest challenge facing Nigeria remains “the removal of the current retrogressive All Progressives Congress (APC) led government and the enthronement of an inclusive government committed to good governance, federal character and restructuring, which Atiku/Obi ticket represents.”

If Nigerians desire a credible, responsible campaign and a future of peace, the pluses are on the side of PDP. This is one presidential election, I think that the Vice Presidential candidate will play a significant role.


Obi is comparatively young, 57 years, a devout Catholic, known across the country and beyond. Like Atiku, Obi has a attractive wife, Margaret who is not an Igbo, just as two of Atiku’s wives hail from the Southeast and South west, respectively. But this aside, Obi has never been tainted by any impropriety. He had been tried and tested. No blemishes found. On that scale, Obi will be a great asset to the Atiku ticket across the country. He will broaden the PDP base and appeal.

It is left for the PDP strategists to come up with a campaign theme that will capture the worries, the aspirations and vision of today and the future. Such a theme should be an umbrella under which a realistic objectives for the next four years will be captured. Nigerians need confidence in their own future and belief that governance matters if entrusted in the hands of those who know why they are seeking public office.

And politics provides that rare opportunity of a lifetime to do good for your country and the people who put you in that office. Sady, our politicians have squandered public trust. They pursue simple, personal things with zeal, but approach critical matters of governance either half heartedly, or completely unattended to. That’s not what life in the presidency ought to be. It ought to make positive change happen, inspire the citizens to shade their doubts by fixing the problems that confront them and provide a unity of purpose.

What makes Obi a unique VP candidate is that he will draw from his shining legacy in Anambra and vast experiences in different sectors of the economy, believing that Atiku if he wins the presidency will listen to him and solutions he (Obi) will proffer. Atiku, I believe, will fancy Obi’s expertise on economic management, as he (Atiku) was entrusted with similar function as Vice President under Olusegun Obasanjo presidency. That prospect is looking increasingly possible now. Good governance and good leadership drive the citizens to offer their utmost best for their country.Given the great pessimism in Anambra before Obi assumed office as Governor and the rough patches he went through after his illegal impeachment, and his triumph and the legacy he left, that has put Anambra as the state with the lowest poverty level and highest number of billionaires in the country, is an inspiration that politics matters if we elect transparent leaders into office. The ex-governor of Ekiti, Ayodele Fayose arrived at the EFCC office in Wuse 2, Abuja in a customised blue Tee-Shirt with the inscription “EFCC I’m here”.

He was accompanied by his lawyer Mike Ozekhome(SAN), Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, former Minister of Aviation Femi Fani-Kayode and a small crowd of supporters,wearing white T-Shirts emblazoned with “Fayose, conscience of the nation”.

Sources said Fayose would respond to issues raised by three teams of investigators.

A source added:

“He made a statement where he denied all the allegations and asked the commission to take him to court.

“So far, he has not responded to how he came about N1.3billion and $5.377million from ONSA. He has more issues to clarify; we are going to detain him.”

“There are three teams handling the allegations against the former governor. There is a special team managing his suspended trial because he had immunity as a governor; a separate team for the N4.685b ONSA fraud and the third panel probes his just completed tenure.

“Definitely, we are going to detain Fayose because he has a lot of issues to clarify.”

The agency’s spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren said “The ex-governor is still undergoing interrogation as at last night.”

FACT CHECK: Keyamo lied

Caught the last few minutes of the altercation between the spokesmen of Atiku Abubakar and Muhammadu Buhari’s campaign organizations, Segun Sowumi and Festus Keyamo on ChannelsTV this morning.

In dismissing the debt cancellation feat of the OBJ govt on Ngozi Okonjo -Iweala’s watch as Finance Minister, Keyamo said there was “no wizardry” about it as it was a mere decision of G8 countries to grant debt forgiveness to some African countries in 2005 and Nigeria simply benefitted. He said it was by no effort of the OBj govt etc etc. He went on to challenge Nigerians watching to google the info and find out. He kept emphasizing that there was nothing to it.

I followed the news at that time 2005) and could remember how things went but I googled all the same. Information is power.

And so I found that the G8 debt cancellation for the 18 countries was a VERY different matter from the Nigeria debt write-off negotiation by OBJ’s govt with the London and Paris Clubs of creditor nations. Two entirely different cases.

An article from 2005 from Stanford Graduate School of Business said, “Under the G8 proposal 18 nations (Benin, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guyana, Honduras, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritania, Mozambique, Nicaragua, Niger, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia) as a group will be spared $1 billion to $2 billion per year in debt service for loans from lenders like the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.”

I didn’t see Nigeria there.

And then I searched further. The internet is man’s greatest resource. If you know how to search and separate fact from nonsense, no-one can ever deceive you. So I saw this from Proshare:

“In a statement conveying the cheering news to the Federal Government, the Paris Club said that in arriving at the debt forgiveness option for Nigeria, it took special cognisance of the economic reform programmes of President Olusegun Obasanjo\'s administration.

“Nigeria was completely excluded from the G-8 largesse, but officials of the Federal Government and some foreign financial agencies like the World Bank had assured that the nation was being considered for debt pardon under a special package.”

The last two paragraphs here show Keyamo to be either such a blatant liar (in his attempt to deceive) or one so ignorant as not to be trusted with even the most basic of information. Which is a pity.

Man Steals Phones During Prayer Session In Church

A man, Mr. James Adida, has been arrested after he went to a popular church and stole phones while the congregation closed their eyes during a prayer session.

Source reports that the incident happened on Sunday at Excess Power of God Church located at Ipaja area of Lagos.

One of the victims, Chinasa Akanazu, went to the church for service with her two phones and kept them inside her bag by her side during the service. The suspect, Adida, was also in the church, pretended to have come for service and sat beside Chinasa during the service even though he had another motive for being in the church that day.

When it was time for prayers, it was gathered the presiding Pastor directed the congregation to close their eyes and go deep in prayer over their problems. Both the victim, Chinasa and Adida closed their eyes as directed by the pastor. However, in the middle of the prayer, Adida opened his eyes while Chinasa was still praying with her eyes closed. He opened her bag, stole her two android phones and escaped from the church.
When Chinasa eventually opened her bag, she did not see her phones and she raised alarm which made the church security to go after Adida who had almost escaped from the church premises and they recovered the phones. He was then handed over to the police for his conduct in the church.

Source scooped at the Police station, Adida confessed that he did not go to the church for prayers but was there to steal phones and sell them in order to raise some money to solve his personal problems.
He was later charged before the Ogba Magistrates court for stealing in the place of worship and remanded in prison custody at Kirikiri, Lagos.
It gathered that the incident shocked the members of the church as they no longer close their eyes completely during prayer sessions.

Justice J. Adepoju of the FCT High Court sitting in Abuja, on Friday, October 12, 2018 convicted and sentenced one Godfrey Ango, a support staff from Integrated Corporate Services attached to Access Bank to 6-years in prison on a 12-count charge bordering on diversion and misappropriation of depositors’ money.

Arraigned in December 2015, Ango sometime in 2011, while being a bulk teller in Access Bank allegedly diverted over N5,224,500 of depositors’ money to personal use. It was reported that the victims – Hillside Schools and one other company, petitioned the bank .

The case was investigated internally by the bank and later referred to the EFCC for further investigation and prosecution. In his statement to the EFCC, Ango confessed to committing the crime and outlined how he spent part of the money to settle personal problems such as house rent, school fees, clothes, shoes and to obtain Ukrainian Students’ Visa.

Counsel to EFCC, D.M Nkwa, urged the court to convict the defendant so that it can serve as deterrent to him and others. In his judgment, Justice Adepoju found Ango guilty of all the 12 counts and sentenced him to 6months imprisonment with option of N200,000 fine on each of the counts.

The court also ordered the convict to make a restitution of the diverted sum to the victims. “I have considered the arguments of both parties, since the purpose of punishment is to prevent further offences and the convict has shown remorse for his actions, monetary conviction and payment of fine is necessary. It will also allow decongestion of prison”, the judge said.

The recent judicial attempt aimed at denying the All Progressives Congress (APC) the opportunity of ripping Rivers state from the hold of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) coupled with ceaseless peddling of falsehoods immersed with propaganda mainly targeted to ridicule Pastor Tonye Cole the Flag-Bearer of APC in the 2019 general elections have been attributed to the alliance between the State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike and the Senator representing Rivers South-East Senatorial District of the State, Senator Magnus Abe.

A chieftain of the APC in Rivers state, Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, who drew the correlation in a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Tuesday affirmed that the plot was woven by the duo to weaken APC in the state, ensure it has no candidate to fly its governorship flag next year and secure an effortless victory for Wike to continue as governor of the state.


"Sadly, Wike found solace in the political misfortune of Senator Magnus Abe whose political blunder have placed him in quagmire and awkward situation to be used as a destructive tool to achieve what is currently happening in Rivers State today", he noted.

Chief Eze, who noted that the plot became more pronounced, important and a do-or-die project for the duo immediately Governor Wike's scheme to become the vice presidential candidate of the PDP failed with the failure of the Sokoto's state governor, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal, to clinch the presidential ticket of the party then the plot for easy clinching of a second term for Wike and to pass the baton on to Magnus Abe in 2023 becomes deadly and imperative. This has resulted to the desperation by the duo and their misguided aides that cajoles up all sort of funny and falsehoods in order to ruin the person and personality of a world respected and renowned figure like Pastor Tonye Cole the divinely anointed next Governor of Rivers State come 2019.

However, Eze notes that the devious plot will surely run into the rocks as the coming of Tonye Cole wasn’t man made but divinely set up to rescue Rivers State from the hands of a confused elements whose major aim is to loot the common patrimony of Rivers State with impunity and ensure insecurity as a means of governance. This notwithstanding, the fact remains that if this plot is not arrested now and those involved in the devious moves punished accordingly, it might snowball into a political crisis, which may affect the 2019 elections in the State.

The party chieftain also condemned the alleged unruly protest by some persons identified as supporters of Senator Abe, on Friday, October 12, at the national secretariat of the party in Abuja, during which the campaign billboards of President Muhammadu Buhari and that of the party's National Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, were mindlessly vandalised by the protesters.

Eze asks, "What is the essence of the protest after Senator Abe and his misguided group were celebrating the judgement that placed Rivers State as a laughing stock before the International community indicating that the so called judgement has no bearing or effect on with the State structure of the party or the election of Pastor Tonye Cole as the APC Flag-Bearer or any candidate of the party in the 2019 general elections.

"I note with happiness that not minding all these unwarranted distractions by Abe, the APC Rivers state Chairman, Ojukaye Amachree has presented candidates of the party with their certificate of return and INEC form CF1 for the 2019 general elections", he said.

Finally, Eze commended the National Working Committee (NWC) for appealing against Justice Chinwendu Nworgu unfortunate judgement to demonstrate that Wike and Abe evil partnership will not stand and encourage party faithful to keep faith with the party leadership as I am convinced that Wike will surely be dislodged accordingly come 2019.

The gunman who allegedly killed a personnel of the Directorate of Security Service (DSS) named Mr. Michael Orusede, in Cross River state has been arrested. The suspect was nabbed by a vigilante group in Obanliku Local Government Area of the state.

It was gathered that Mr. Orusede was stabbed to death while trying to disarm an irate gunman last Thursday in Sankwala, headquarters of Obanliku LGA.

The deceased was stabbed when he attempted to pick up a gun that was surrendered by the irate gunman who stabbed him in the chest.

The gunman had also in the process shot the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the Obanliku Police Division, Mr. Effiong Okon, at close range before escaping from the scene of the incident but the officer was wearing a bullet proof vest, so nothing happened to him.

On Monday, the alleged gunman who was identified as Emmanuel Kpongkpong tried to escape to Cameroon but was arrested in the Bomaji Mountain in Boki LGA.

Over 1,000 ex-Airways workers get severance benefits

Over 1,000 ex-workers’ of Nigeria Airways out of the 5, 968 could start receiving their severance benefits as early as tomorrow according to top official of verification team for the exercise, Mr. Lookman Animashaun.

The verification exercise which started on Monday entered its second day on Tuesday as the Presidential Initial on Continuous Audit (PICA) have until next week Monday to complete the exercise.

The tedious exercise which brought many senior citizens to the expansive premises of the Skypower Aviation Catering, a subsidiary of the defunct Nigeria Airways led to the death of a man who was brought to the verification centre in an ambulance from an undisclosed hospital.

The deceased passed away shortly as he was not able to undergone verification before he passed on and was hurriedly taken in the same ambulance to possibly the mortuary.

At the place were very elderly men, women very sick men and women. Some of them were wheeled to the place while others came in crutches. Their situations were not helped as the whole exercise was rowdy with many of them proceeding from the first point of checking their names.

After that they were asked to proceed to the second stage which was to get a long form where they were asked to fill their bio data and other information required of them.

The third stage is data capture area where their entitlements are slept out and computed for final payment.

Animashaun said over 5,968 ex workers are expected to be paid, adding that the exercise closes October 22, 2018.

He said 1, 000 ex workers turn up each day for verification exercise, adding that the situation is fraught with logistic problem but quickly added that the situation was progressing very well.

He disclosed that the government had concluded plans to pay them 50 per cent of the entire entitlement, stressing that the other 50 per cent would be paid in the next six months.

It would be recalled that many former personnel of the defunct Nigeria Airways Limited (NAL) have lost their lives while waiting for their pension and severance package to be paid by the federal government.

More than 15 years after the liquidation of Nigeria Airways Limited, President Muhammadu Buhari last month approved the immediate release of N22.68 billion for settlement of the retirement benefits of ex-workers of the defunct airline.

Return N1.3bn You Collected From Dasuki, EFCC Tells Fayose

The immediate past Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, finally honoured an invitation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Tuesday after losing his immunity from prosecution and arrest.

After leading Fayose to the interrogation room, it was learnt that he was asked to write a statement explaining how he spent N1.3bn he allegedly received from the Office of the National Security Adviser through a former Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, during the build-up to the 2014 governorship election in Ekiti State.

The commission also asked him to return the money.

A source at the EFCC, however, told our correspondent that the former governor refused to admit to collecting the money.

He said, “We have treated Fayose with respect since he arrived in our office. We asked him about the money he received from Obanikoro and when he would return it but he is denying everything.

“He said in his statement on oath that he never received any money despite the overwhelming evidence. The man is refusing to cooperate despite the overwhelming evidence we have.”

It was learnt that as of 7 pm on Tuesday, the former governor was still writing his statement.

The funds allegedly traced to Fayose were said to be part of the N4.7bn allegedly handed to Obanikoro by the then National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.)

While about N1.3bn was given to Fayose, another N1.3bn was also handed over to the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in Osun State in 2014, Senator Iyiola Omisore.

The funds were said to have been transported from Lagos to Ekiti State by air.

Since the investigation began in 2015, the EFCC has interrogated over 20 persons.

Apart from Obanikoro and Omisore, others interrogated by the EFCC include Captain Ahmed Borodo, the pilot whose plane was allegedly chartered by Obanikoro; Aide-de-Camp to Obanikoro, Lt. Olumide Adewale; and Fayose’s aide, Abiodun Agbele (who is standing trial for allegedly receiving the funds on behalf of Fayose).

Others interrogated include bureau de change operators and senior bank executives.

“Despite the statements made by all these people indicating that Fayose received money, the man is still denying the allegations,” an EFCC detective said.

However, Fayose’s lawyer, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), said Fayose would not compromise himself in the name of administrative bail.

Ozekhome said Fayose’s accounts had already been frozen by the commission and was already in court over the matter.

On whether Fayose would return the money as demanded by the EFCC, Ozekhome said, “Which money are they saying he should return? Has he said any money is with him? They won’t dare tell him to return the money.

“Fayose is not like other Nigerians that the EFCC will bamboozle and force and blackmail to make refunds. Why tell a man to refund the money he has not admitted to receiving when the matter is in court?

“If they offer him an administrative bail with no strings attached, which is not a Greek gift, then he should take it.”

Earlier in the day, before entering the EFCC premises, Fayose and scores of his supporters had created a scene at the entrance of the commission.

Fayose, who wore a blue shirt with the inscription, ‘EFCC, I am here’, and a blue pair of trousers with a blue face-cap to match, arrived at the Tunde Idiagbon House, Wuse 2, which is the former headquarters of the EFCC, around 1 pm.

The former governor, who clutched a backpack and a small duffel bag, was accompanied by Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State; a former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode; his lawyer, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), and several of his aides and supporters.

Addressing reporters before making his way into the EFCC, Fayose said, “I am here in line with my promise that I will be here on the October 16.

“And, as I said to the EFCC, they should await my arrival. This morning, they have been to my house; they cordoned off my street, which I feel was unnecessary. It was unwarranted.

“When a man says he is coming, Nigerians should be given benefit of the doubt.

“I had led Ekiti, and the best I could give, I have given. Therefore, every question, whatever they need to ask today, I will be able to respond appropriately.”

Also speaking, Governor Wike said he accompanied Fayose in order to warn the EFCC to respect his rights.

Wike added, “He wrote a letter to the EFCC that he will submit himself on October 16. He is hale and hearty and I believe that EFCC should know he is well. Our fear from the present report that we have is that he may be harmed.

“But, let Nigerians know that he came by himself to the EFCC without anybody harassing him. So, that is why I brought him here today.”

In his remarks, Fani-Kayode said the EFCC should remember that their actions were being monitored by the international community and they should not abuse Fayose’s rights.

Ozekhome asked the EFCC not to keep Fayose for more than 24 hours as failure to release him would be an abuse of his rights.

Lady Sues Father For Banning Her From Marrying Christian Boyfriend In Kaduna

A young Muslim lady identified as Amina Hassan, has sued her dad, Alhaji Adamu Hassan for banning her from marrying her Christian boyfriend.

Amina, 20 met her suitor Christopher from the Niger Delta region last year and recently introduced him to her father who rejected the relationship.

She immediately hired a lawyer to help convince her father.

Amina and her lawyer Barrister Ado Ali appeared before a Sharia Court at Magajin Gari area of Kaduna state yesterday where her lawyer begged the court to serve as her guardian in order to allow her wedding to hold.

In his objection, Alhaji Hassan through his lawyer said the only issue he has with Christopher is that he has no regard for him.

The girl’s counsel, however, prayed the court to grant the two parties two weeks to sort things out and reach an agreement.

In his ruling the Judge Lawal Dahiru said Alhaji Hassan has every right to assess his daughter’s suitors but has no right to force anyone on her.

He thereafter adjourned the case till the 29th of October for hearing.

SPEAK SPIRITUAL LANGUAGE

And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ (1 Corinthians 3:1).

The Apostle Paul had an experience with the Christians at Corinth; he wasn’t able to communicate with them in spiritual language. Therefore, in our opening verse, he reprimanded them for being carnal.

On another occasion, he said to the Christians in Rome, “I’m having to communicate with you at your level, because you’re yet to come to a higher level of maturity.” He said, “I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh…” (Romans 6:19).

It reminds of the experience Jesus also had with His disciples. John 11 tells us that Lazarus had fallen sick and died. When Jesus was informed, He said to His disciples, “…Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep” (John 11:11).
His disciples, not understanding His spiritual language, replied, “Lord, if he is asleep, he will get better.” Jesus had to tell them plainly, “…Lazarus is dead” (John 11:14). He had to speak to them in a language they could understand.

Have you ever found yourself in situations where you had difficulty expressing God’s truth to carnal men? For example, you couldn’t say, “I have a headache,” even though you felt a headache. The carnal man, on the other hand, sees nothing wrong communicating at such a low level, failing to realise that as Christians, we don’t walk by our feelings, but by the Word.

You ought not to talk sickness, even when you feel the symptoms of sickness in your body. Use the Word against any pain or anomaly in your body; command it to cease, and it’ll pass out of your body. Hebrews 13:5-6 says, “…for he (God) hath said…that we may boldly say….” You’re only supposed to say what you have, that God gave to you. Don’t affirm or accept anything that’s from the devil. Talk spiritual. Speak the Word only, and always.

CONFESSION
I’m what God says I am. God’s Word is my life; therefore, I live out the Word. My life is the testimony of God’s grace and infinite blessings. The Word of God is in my heart and in my mouth, and as I speak it forth, circumstances align with God’s perfect will for my life, in Jesus’ Name.

Delta Air Lines has reported financial results for the September quarter 2018 with GAAP pre-tax income of $1.7 billion, net income of $1.3 billion and earnings per diluted share of $1.91 on record revenue of $12.0 billion. Returning $566 million to shareholders through dividends and share repurchases, the airline also indicated September quarter 2018 adjusted pre-tax income of $1.6 billion, adjusted net income of $1.2 billion and adjusted earnings per diluted share of $1.80 The report released recently showed adjusted pre-tax income for the September quarter 2018 was $1.6 billion, and adjusted earnings per share were $1.80, at the high end of guidance. Adjusted earnings per share were up 16 percent compared to the prior year quarter, driven by revenue momentum, tax reform benefits and a four percent lower share count.
Results reflect a $30 million negative impact from Hurricane Florence. Commenting, Ed Bastian, Delta’s chief executive officer said “our solid eight percent revenue growth, combined with flat non-fuel unit cost performance, helped offset 85 percent of the $655 million fuel cost increase in the quarter. These achievements are a testament to the strength of the Delta business model and the hard work of the Delta people, and I am pleased to recognize their performance with an additional $395 million toward 2018 profit sharing.

“Our commercial momentum and improved cost trajectory give us confidence that we are on a path to deliver continued top-line growth and expand margins as we move into 2019,’’ Bastian added.
On Revenue Environment, Delta’s adjusted operating revenue of $11.8 billion for the September quarter improved eight percent, or $912 million versus the prior year. This quarterly revenue result marks a record for the company, driven by improvements across Delta’s business, including a nearly 20 percent increase in premium product ticket revenues and double-digit percentage increases in cargo, loyalty and Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul revenue.
