It's a sad moment for the family and friends of a vibrant student of Auchi Polytechnic in Edo state, who was killed in a ghastly motor accident.

It was gathered that the deceased identified as Miss Florence Ubuane, a final year student of the department of Office Technology and Management in the institution, died after being involved in the fatal accident which happened three days ago while she was on her way to Auchi. 

One of her colleagues who has been left heartbroken by the tragic demise, took to Facebook to mourn the loss. He wrote; 

RIP Miss Florence Ubuane. Death why? After 3 years of Aluta struggle, just days to our graduation, death decide to take her away from us. The department of OTM particularly NDfinal love you and will miss you..

As it is usually said that Mr death is inevitable but everybody's prayer is that it should only visit at the right time, that is if there is a right time. It's hard to say but I have to say it.... Rest in peace Miss Florence Ubuane.

The Executive Vice Chairman, Nigerian Communications Commission(NCC) Professor Umar Garba Dantatta has said the commission will continue to serve as a feedback mechanism for telecom consumers so as to avoid being exploited by service providers

He also said the gesture would assist the service providers to provide quality services, value for money and to check unwholesome practices.

Dantatta stated this at the weekend during 99th edition of consumer outreach programme held in Ilorin, Kwara state capital with the theme: “Using Information and Education as Tools for Consumer Empowerment and Protection.”

According to him, “the forum was organised to educate telecom consumers and other stakeholders in contemporary issues generating interest in the industry and also to serves as feedback mechanism.”

He said “At the NCC, the Telecom consumers are the target beneficiaries of all our activities which make them enjoy primary focus in terms of ensuring that they get good quality service, value for money spent, timely and fair redress of complaints and protection from unwholesome practices of some service providers.”

Dantatta who was represented by the Director, Consumers Affairs Bureau, Mrs. Felicia Onwuegbu Chulam said the commission had decided to design the outreach so as to empower consumer through the provision of necessary information and education to consumers.

Dantatta noted that: “Through empowerment and education, telecom consumers are fortified with necessary tools to be protected from market exploitation and to make rational and informed decision when making choices of services.

“Consumer information and education is identified by the NCC as one of the most effective mechanisms that provides and guarantees consumers empowerment and education.

“It also serves as a proactive way of providing consumers from making wrong choices and also protected the consumers from being exploited and against fraud.”

He, therefore, urged consumers to be up and doing and always free to come out with their feelings about the service providers saying that, “it is their inalienable rights to inform the service providers and NCC during this kind of forum so as to bring the much desired results and to assist them to continue to enjoy the value for their money spent on the services being provided to them”.

As part of efforts to promote financial inclusion and enhance access to financial services for low income earners and the unbanked, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is proposing the establishment of Payment Service Banks in rural areas across the country.

This is coming as the apex bank says it may alter the amount it has ordered South African telecoms firm, MTN to refund to Nigeria for illegally repatriating funds from the country.


To this end, the CBN has released the draft guidelines for the regulation of the proposed banks.

A copy of the document was obtained on the CBN’s website yesterday.

A major difference between the proposed banks and the defunct community banks is that the new rural banks would not be allowed to grant any form of loans, advances and guarantees.

By the guidelines, they are expected to have a minimum capital base of N5 billion with capital adequacy ratio of 10 per cent or as may be prescribed by the CBN from time to time.

The objective of the proposed institutions, it was gathered, is to enhance financial inclusion in rural areas by increasing access to deposit products, payment and remittance services to small businesses, low-income households and other entities through high-value transactions in a secured technology-driven environment.

In terms of structure, the payment service banks are expected to operate mostly in rural areas and unbanked location, with not less than 50 per cent physical points in such areas.

In addition, they are expected to establish ATMs in some areas; be at liberty to operate through banking agents; use other channels, including electronic platforms to reach-out to its customers and establish coordinating centres in clusters of outlets to superintend and control the activities of various access points and banking agents.

Also, the guidelines provide that these rural banks are expected to be technology-driven and are expected to conform to the best practices of data storage; security and integrity.

According to the central bank, activities they are expected to undertake include, “Maintain savings accounts and accept deposits from individuals and small businesses, which shall be covered by the deposit insurance scheme.

“They are to carry out payments and remittance (including inbound cross-border personal remittances) services through various channels within Nigeria; issue debit and pre-paid cards and operate electronic purse.”

These rural banks are also permitted to invest in federal government and CBN’s securities and carry out such other activities as may be prescribed by the central bank from time to time.

On the other hand, the central bank listed the non-permissible items the banks shall not carry out to include, “grant any form of loans, advances and guarantees; trade in foreign exchange market; undertake any other transaction, which is not prescribed in the CBN Regulation on the Scope of Banking and Ancillary Matters, No. 3, 2010.”

The banks are also required to use the words ‘Payment Service Banks,’ in their names to differentiate them from other financial institutions.

“The promoters of payment service banks shall be required to submit a formal application for the grant of a payment service bank licence addressed to the Governor of the CBN,” the CBN said.

The guidelines also stipulate that they are expected to pay a non-refundable application fee of N500,000 in bank draft as well as a detailed business plan or feasibility report, among others.

“Not later than six months after obtaining an Approval-in-Principle, the promoters of a proposed Payment Service Bank shall submit application for the grant of a final licence to the CBN,” it stated.

The application is to be accompanied among other things, with a non-refundable licence fee of N2 million.

CBN May Alter MTN Fines



Meanwhile, the Governor of CBN, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, has said that the apex bank may alter the $8.134 billion fines imposed on MTN Nigeria for illegal repatriation of funds from the country.

Reuters quoted Emefiele as saying this yesterday in London.

“I don’t think it will be staying at $8.1 billion. This issue will be dealt with amicably and equitably,” he said.

Emefiele said the central bank had received documents from MTN and four banks involved in the case.

“The central bank will be examining these; then it will be escalated up to my level,” he said.

He said he expected to get the results in a couple of weeks.

The central bank filed a counter-claim on Friday to a court request by MTN, which is seeking to stop the bank from forcing it to bring back the money, according to MTN’s lawyer.

Emefiele also said Nigeria’s central bank would continue to intervene in the foreign exchange markets, adding that he believed in a stable exchange rate regime.

Nigeria’s current stance of monetary tightening would continue, he said.

The central bank had alleged in August that MTN and four banks, Standard Chartered Bank, Citibank, Stanbic IBTC Plc and Diamond Bank Plc, illegally repatriated the sum out from the country.

MTN Nigeria thereafter went to court to challenge the directive of the CBN. In a suit at the Federal High Court, MTN Nigeria had prayed the court to restrain the CBN from taking further action in respect of the order.

Former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, has declared that the emergence of Atiku Abubakar as presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) was a good sign for the country ahead of the 2019 general election.


He said this in a statement he released to the media Sunday night.

Obi emphasised that what the PDP delegates did in Port Harcourt, the Rivers state capital. was “a mirror of what Nigerians want next year -free and transparent election”.


Obi noted that although all the aspirants were qualified, the victory of Atiku showed that he was widely accepted.

He commended other contestants for putting up brave contest and conducting themselves in a way befitting true leaders.

Lamenting that Nigeria had derailed off the paths of development, Obi said that going by “Atiku’s wealth of experience, track record of wealth-creation, knack for identifying excellence among excellent people, detribalised nature and perfect understanding of the ills of the country”, the former VP had all it takes to restore the nation’s glory.

BudgIT has again raised alarm that some states are yet to fully offset the outstanding amount owed pensioners and civil servants despite series of N1.8trillion bailouts.


BudgIT is a civic organization that uses tech tools to simplify the budget and public spending to raise the standard of transparency and accountability in government.

On Sunday, Ayomide Faleye, BudgIT head of communication, released a report of a recently conducted survey aimed at ascertaining the frequency and magnitude of challenges civil servants and pensioners are encountering.


The report sent to us explained that the survey focused on three categories of workers in all 36 states – primary and secondary school teachers, midwives and secretariat workers – while attention was paid to ascertain if retirees level were receiving pensions as at when due.

Faleye said BudgIT discovered that 12 states are yet to offset the amount owed secondary school teachers fully and that many states are threatening workers to keep the information away from public domain.

The report reads: “Notable among states with outstanding liabilities to secondary teachers is Osun and Kogi state.


“Osun State has been paying secondary school teachers above level 8 only a fraction of their salaries and entitlement for the last 30 months.

“Cumulatively, Osun state is owing secondary school teachers above level 8 about 15 months salary.

“Other states with outstanding liabilities to states include Abia, Benue, Bayelsa, Kwara, Imo, Ekiti, Oyo, Ondo and Zamfara.

“Kogi State, for instance, is owing teachers about 13 months salaries according to the response given by secondary school teachers during the survey.

“Midwives, whose responsibility includes attending to issues around pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum, women’s sexual and reproductive health and newborn care – are also bugged down by issues including failure of some state to pay salaries and emolument as at when due.

“Midwives were questioned during the survey across the 36 states. BudgIT discovered that 10 states are owing midwives salaries as at close of business on September 24, 2018.

“Delta, Imo, Abia, Osun, Plateau, Bayelsa, Ekiti and 11 other states owe Pensioners entitlement ranging from 1 month to 36 months.

“Almost all pensioners expressed how unhappy they are, their dissatisfaction with the government and how hard it has been for them to survive despite years of hard work up into service

“BudgIT hereby ask States to offset outstanding liabilities to its workers and pensioners as funds in form of bailout estimated to be in the region of N1.8 trillion have been issues to states to offset all outstanding liabilities owe workers.”

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) may reduce the $8.1billion it ordered MTN Nigeria to repatriate as part of an ongoing disagreement, its governor Godwin Emefiele said yesterday.

The MTN and the CBN are in a dispute over the transfer of $8.1 billion of funds which the bank said the company had sent abroad in breach of foreign-exchange regulations. Nigeria accounts for a third of MTN’s annual core profit.

“I don’t think it will be staying at $8.1 billion,” Emefiele said during a visit to London, adding he expected the issue to be dealt with “amicably and equitably”.

“I want to believe that the figures will reduce. Whether they will be dropped completely, I honestly cannot say at this time.”

Emefiele said the CBN had received documents two weeks ago from MTN and four lenders involved in the case –

Standard Chartered, Stanbic IBTC Bank, Citibank and Diamond Bank – and was in communications with all parties involved.

“The central bank will be examining these, then it will be escalated up to my level,” he said, adding he expected to get the results in a couple of weeks.

The two sides are locked in a court dispute over the transaction. The central bank filed a counter-claim on Friday to a court request by MTN, which is seeking to stop the bank from forcing it to bring back the money.

Emefiele said the MTN case was a one-off, and the central bank was not looking at transactions involving any other companies operating in Nigeria.

Emefiele also said the CBN would continue to intervene in the foreign exchange markets, adding that he believed in a stable exchange rate regime.

Nigeria has been battling to defend its currency and shore up its reserves of around $44 billion, hobbled by lower oil prices. At the same time, the oil exporter has suffered from high inflation, which edged up to 11.2 percent at its last reading – well above the central bank’s 6-9 percent target.

Emefiele said Nigeria’s current stance of monetary tightening would continue.

HE KNOWS ALL THINGS.


But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you (John 14:26).

The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of knowledge; He’s the embodiment of all knowledge. No wonder Jesus said, “…he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” So, not only does the Holy Spirit teach you, He reminds you of things you already know; things He already taught you.

That means there’s no chance of you losing information of what you were taught.
There may have been times you tried to remember certain things; it could be something you kept, and for some reason, you couldn’t recollect where you kept it; the Holy Spirit can remind you. If you find yourself in such a situation, don’t say, “I’ve forgotten where I kept it”; or, “I can’t remember where I kept it.” Consciously train yourself not to say, “I forgot”; instead, say, “I will remember!”

When you’re trying to recollect a thought, an idea, information, or whatever it is, say, “I will remember”; because you’re conscious that the Holy Spirit will bring it to your remembrance. It’s part of His ministry to help you retain knowledge and information in your spirit, and bring that information to your consciousness when occasion demands.
With the Holy Spirit, you can never walk in darkness or be confused about anything in life. There’s absolutely no topic or subject He’s deficient in. He knows everything about God and also knows everything about natural things.

He knows everything about Infotech, Law, Science, History, Business, the Stock Market, Aeronautics, Fashion, Cookery, the Internet and anything you can imagine. He can teach you better than the Professors of the world from all the best universities put together.

Remember, He made everything in the world; He can give you a piece of His knowledge that you need to help change your world for the better. He’s more than willing to share everything He knows with you, if you’d let Him. Recognise and take advantage of this aspect of His unique ministry in your life, and you’ll be an oasis of knowledge, and a fountain of solutions in a dark, needy, and ignorant world.

CONFESSION

I have the best teacher, in the person of the Holy Spirit. He teaches me all things and causes me to function in the full and exact knowledge of God. Hallelujah!

The Lagos State University (LASU) has dismissed the appointment of three senior lecturers for sexual harassment of female students in their departments.

The decision to sack the three lecturers was taken by LASU Governing Council after its meeting held, on Thursday, October 4, 2018 at the main campus Ojo.

Sunday Sun gathered that two other senior lecturers escaped being sacked as one was issued a warning and the other was advised against committing same offence.

The council acted on the recommendations of the Joint Council/Senate (Academic) Disciplinary Committee which investigated the allegations against the five lecturers.

The Sonny Ajose-led council Senate committee had in their reports found the three senior lecturers guilty of sexual harassment and thus recommended their dismissal from LASU.

It was gathered that the two other lecturers whose offences were not disclosed by Sunday Sun source, escaped sack as council directed the university management to issue him warning letter and the fifth lecturers got advisory letter.

The three lecturers dismissed from the services of LASU for sexual harassment were Dr. Sunkanmi Odubunmi, an Associate Professor in Department of Economics, Dr. Isiaka Ogunwande, also an Associate Professor in Department of Chemistry and Dr. Emmanuel Gbeleyi, a lecturer of Anatomy, Lagos State University College of Medicine, Ikeja.

Dr. Odubunmi, was arrested by LASU security operatives with the help of a nongovernmental organisation. His arrest took place three days to his professorial interview.

Odubunmi was said to have invited a female student to his office, on Saturday, to rewrite an examination, locked the door and began to romance her before the bubble burst.

Unknown to Dr. Odubunmi, the female student was fitted with secret camera and was monitored by the non-governmental organisation and LASU security operatives in another office close to his.

The same allegation applied to Dr. Ogunwande. For Dr. Gbeleyi, he was alleged to have injected female students, sedated them in the laboratory before having sexual intercourse with them.

The acting Coordinator, Center for Information Press and Public Relations (CIPPR), Mr. Adeola Adekoyam confirmed that the Governing Council has approved the dismissal of the three lecturers at its meeting on Thursday.

Adekoya, who could not give details of the decisions by the Prof. Adebayo Ninalowo-led Governing Council, told Sunday Sun that his department was expecting the decision extract of the meeting.

His words: “Yes, the governing Council took the decision on Thursday. The council division is yet to furnish my office with details. I don’t have an idea whether it is sack, dismissal or termination of appointment.”

On the three ASUU LASU exco case, Adekoya said the case is still on-going, adding “it is not a case they (committee) have to hurry about. May be in the next quarter, council will meet on their case”.

Barely a year after divorcing Nigerian actress, Damilola Adegbite, Ghanaian actor, Chris Attoh, has found love again.

Attoh who has one child from his previous marriage to Damilola Adegbite tied the knots at a private ceremony in Ghana today Oct 6th with his American based fiancée, Betty Jennifer.

Attoh is mostly based in the U.S these days where he met his new wife. The newlyweds arrived Ghana early this week for a movie premier and used the opportunity to also tie the knot traditionally.

In a September 2017 interview, Attoh confirmed his divorce saying, “Dami is a wonderful woman and an amazing mother. Despite our differences, she and I will always be friends. So more than anything we will find ways to continue to make sure that Brian can still have a balanced upbringing filled with love and support. Both our families have been and are still very supportive in helping us take care of our son Brian when we can’t be there due to work,”

SUNDAY, 7TH OCTOBER.

PREVAIL FIRST IN PRAYER.

When they heard that, they were cut to the heart, and took counsel to slay them (Acts 5:33).

In our opening scripture, Peter had ministered the Gospel to a group of people, and rather than give their hearts to Christ, the people wanted to kill him.
That’s why it’s important that before you go out to preach, you intercede for the people you’re going to be ministering to; pray that your message will be accepted and won’t just be a witness against them.

It brings to mind the experience of Stephen in the Book of Acts. He ministered a powerful sermon, full of excellent theology and history. Yet when he was done, the Bible says the people “…were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with their teeth” (Acts 7:54). They shut their ears to his message and ran upon him to kill him, and eventually stoned him to death.

Just because the message is great doesn’t mean people will be moved enough to give their hearts to Christ; they didn’t in Stephen’s case. So, before you embark on any evangelical mission or outreach programme, prevail first in prayer, because it’s about the souls of men and the impact the message will have on them, resulting in their salvation.

When you intercede like that, the love of God in you wells up, striving against sin, Satan, and the forces of darkness, and the souls of men are rescued from evil. At that moment, you’re God’s champion; the deliverer.

When you’ve succeeded in bringing them out of that darkness in the spirit, you’ll know it. Then you’re ready to go. Your message may just be for five or twenty minutes, it doesn’t matter; while you’re at it, they’ll be getting convicted and crying out for salvation. This is important. Learn to prevail first in prayer.

I’m an effective minister of the New Testament, ministering life to everyone I come in contact with. Even now, I pray for lost souls around the world, that the message of salvation profits them today. A man has narrated how a gay armed criminal robbed a house in Lagos and raped a male occupant in the process. It was gathered that after robbing the family of N95,000, one of the robbers hurriedly raped of the male victims in the anus, till he defecated.

Report has it that the victim is still hurting since the incident, both psychologically and physically as he has been messed up. He is now pooing on himself.

Men of the underworld, invaded our house here in Lekki Ibeju Lagos State at about 12 minutes pass 1am, I still remember vividly they were 10 in number that come into our apartment, with others mounting surveillance outside in case security operative arrives so they can be signal and flee.

My husband, my younger sister, my husband's nephew, my grown up female kids my gateman and my domestic servant (female) were in the house when the robbers came.

They were huge and muscle man well mask, the brought out everybody from their room Assembly us at the sitting room. They commanded my husband to bring all the money he has from the house, fortunately my husband had 95,000 naira cash in the house so he was accompanied by one of them to our room and they collected the money.

They said I can't believe this is all you have so they searched everywhere in the house and collected some money from each room they entered. before they started their operation they had collected all our cell phones.

We went through torture from these robbers, surprisingly one of them was a gay, so he raped my husband's nephew through the anus till he defecated and he left him. We were crying and they hurriedly and left.

We took him to the hospital and if he wants to defecate if he doesn't go to the restroom quick he will release it on his trouser. So sir that's what happened to us. only my husband's nephew. They didn't touch any of us being female..

Two men have been arrested by the Edo State Police Command for robbing a policeman and dispossessing him of his service pistol in the Oredo Local Government Area of the state.

The suspects were alleged to be members of a five-man gang who specialised in unleashing terror on unsuspecting residents of Siluko, Iriri and Ekenhuan axis of the state capital.

Southern City News gathered on Friday that the suspected robbers had accosted the policeman in Oliha, Oredo Local Government Area of the state, and ordered him out of his vehicle.

It was learnt that on sensing danger, the plain-clothe security officer, was said to have attempted to use his service pistol, but was overpowered by the gang.

The robbers allegedly made away with the gun.

But two of them, identified as Emmanuel Oghenevo and Kelvin Aroiwa, were later arrested following a tip-off.

Oghenevo, who claimed to be a driver from the Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State, said that the gang was surprised when their victim brandished a gun as they were ignorant of his identity.

He explained:

“One of us, called I. Y., collected the pistol from the policeman and hit him on the head. As the policeman was coming out of his vehicle, he brought out his gun to shoot us.

“We did not know that he was a security operative. As he brought out his gun, I. Y. dodged and pushed him. Another member of our group, Emma, pinned his hand and took the gun.”

The suspect, however, alleged that he was pushed into crime by poverty and the hardship he was going through.

“I started robbing early this year. But I have not killed anyone. My family was suffering and there was no other way to feed. So, I decided to join the gang.

“I am not happy about my arrest and I advise those involved in crime to desist from it. If I am forgiven, I will leave robbery and join the police,” he said.

But Aroiwa, who claimed to have been under the influence of alcohol when the crime was committed, told Southern City News that he was arrested by policemen at his hideout in the Aduwawa area of the Benin metropolis.

The native from Odighi community in the Ovia North-East Local Government Area of the state, said:

“We were at Ring Road (in Benin) when one of us told us to go to Oliha. I told them that I was drunk and would not be able to go.

“But they insisted. So, I followed them. I did not even know when we got to Oliha. To say the truth, I did not even know when they collected the gun from him (policeman).

He added:

“As we were driving out, they woke me up angrily and told me that they had collected a pistol. We later went to Ekenhuan road where we robbed another man. I was at Aduwawa smoking when the police arrested me and took me to a police station.”

However, the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Johnson Kokumo, assured that the suspects would be arraigned in court at the end of the investigation.

When I wrote the article ‘The president we need’, some supporters of President Buhari claimed that I was being too critical of him because I don’t like him hence the need that I correct such baseless misconception.

The truth is that I have no business liking or hating the President. President Buhari to the best of my understanding belongs to nobody in particular. He is not the Fulani president; neither is he the Islamic president nor the northern president or APC president for that matter. President Buhari is the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; he belongs to everyone and therefore my President. For that I owe him my prayers and support.

I owe him my prayers so that God will give him the wisdom to lead the nation to the path of peace and prosperity.  And I owe him my support, especially support for those policies that are geared towards the best interest of the nation.

However, where he runs a system or advances a policy that runs contrary to my conviction, I am duty bound to exercise my democratic rights of criticizing those policies. Other than that, I owe him and his office my utmost respect.

An election year provides the opportunity for an incumbent seeking reelection to account for his stewardship, and for such accounts to be interrogated. Enlightened voters will weigh whether the incumbent re-electable based on his performance as against any form of emotions often associated with illiterate supporters. This is why every election is that of the incumbent to win or to lose.

In this essay, I will assess the President Buhari’s anti corruption war and huge infrastructural investment. Based on the government’s own account as published by various media outlets and at different times, President Buhari has invested N15.128 trillion or thereabout on infrastructure between 2015 to 2018, the highest by any government in the nation’s history.  This figure is the summation of the N12.7 trillion the government claimed it expended on infrastructure between 2015/2017 and the N2.428 trillion as appropriated for capital projects in the 2018 budget.

The government claimed its massive investment in capital projects is in recognition of our infrastructural deficit and also the need to stimulate economic growth. This is sound developmental economics for the wealth of a nation is more often than not measured by the quality and scope of her infrastructure. More so, the best way to invest in the future aside human capital is to invest in infrastructure. I agree with the president on this as there is nothing wrong in the government investing over N15 trillion on infrastructures within the past three to four years.

However, the issue of contention is whether the level of infrastructures on ground is commensurate to the amount of investment made so far and what has corruption got to do with this? When will the president conduct the self audit of his administration so as to ascertain if the level of infrastructures provided so far are commensurate with the huge spending?

I have heard some folks challenge the government to name any significant project initiated and completed by the administration in the last three years. I personally can’t think of any as looking for President Buhari’s infrastructural development is like looking for a needle in a haystack.

Given the quantum of  money said to have been  invested on capital projects,  one would expect  to see massive infrastructural works either finished or on-going on roads, power, bridges and other areas across the country, but this is not so. Physically and economically, Nigeria does not look like a place where N15.128 trillion has been invested on infrastructural development and renewal. The parlous state of our infrastructures does not justify the claims. Perhaps, someone is lying to the president. Someone is deceiving him and he believes the lies.

For starters, I will challenge the president to travel on our federal roads. If he travel today  from Lokoja to  Enugu and from Enugu  to Port Harcourt  and Enugu to Onitsha, he will never boastfully  lay claim to having invested 15.128 trillion on infrastructures because there is no single one kilometer stretch of those death traps called federal  roads that  are motor able. Where then are the trillions said to have been invested on capital projects? Where are the Buhari capital projects if the roads and bridges are not useable?

What I want to tell the president today and I hope he is listening is that  he is being deceived especially with regards to the  state of our infrastructure  and he can prove me wrong by  making just a road trip by himself  . He can choose just the Lokoja to Enugu Road.  Whatever, report brought back to him will suffice. The wife already confirmed that even the Aso Rock Presidential Clinic could not boast of basic drugs despite huge budgetary provisions.

Corruption is one reason why the level of investment in infrastructure cannot be justified. This is sad because one area I expected President Buhari to excel is in the fight against corruption but unfortunately that too has failed. According to Transparency International, Nigeria is now more corrupt than she was in 2015 and made her worst ever retrogression on the CPI moving 12 steps backward from 136 to 148.

Beyond rhetoric, it appears or so it seem that President Buhari does not understand what it takes to fight corruption except the arrest  of individuals who are in opposition party.  Nothing has changed in the way government businesses are conducted.  The same wasteful spending, influence peddling, extortion, criminal wastefulness, reckless spending, budget padding and over inflation of contract values which characterized the previous administration are still there.  This government unfortunately has promoted corruption more than any other government by elevating cronyism to state crafts. Instead of surrounding himself with technocrats, the president surrounds himself with his nephews and cousins most of whom typically engage in extortion and influence peddling, an act which by itself is corruption.

To fight corruption the president should live by example and by surrounding himself with quality advisers, he should also probe our over inflated investment in infrastructure which remains a fluke. A real fight against corruption will commence when the president initiate an executive bill that will prohibit inflation of contracts as inflated contracts remain 50% of ongoing corruption in Nigeria.

The vehicle, a Toyota Hiace Bus, reportedly belongs to the St. Peter‘s Anglican Church. Olaniyan repairs the bus for the church.

Saturday PUNCH learnt that he had led two members of his gang, Bolaji Azeez and Adebola Adekunle, to steal the bus in the dead of night.

They broke the bus’ side window glass, unlocked the steering and drove it to Lagos.

It was gathered that Azeez was intercepted by DCP Abba Kyari-led Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team operatives at the point of selling the bus. Azeez led the police to apprehend his two accomplices.

The operatives, our correspondent learnt, had acted on a report made by the church.


The bus was said to have been recovered and returned to the church.

In an interview with our correspondent earlier in the week, 25-year-old Olaniyan said Azeez contacted him that a friend, Adekunle, wanted to buy a Hiace bus for N1.2m.

He said after he looked around to get a bus for sale without success, he hatched the plan to steal the church’s.


Olaniyan stated, “I live close to the church and help the church to repair the bus. Azeez called me that his friend, Adekunle, needed a Hummer (Hiace) bus and I told him I did not have any for sale. I promised to look around and get back to him.

“Three days later, I saw somebody drive the church’s bus along the street and it occurred to me that I could make a deal out of it. I called Azeez that I had got a bus but that it belonged to the church. I asked him to come with his friend, Adekunle, so that we could steal it.

“They came to Osun on February 26, 2018. We entered the church premises at 11pm and hid somewhere until 1am when we struck. I had never engaged in this kind of thing before. It was money that tempted me. I want the police to have mercy on me.”

Adekunle, who also owned up to the crime, explained that he was in dire need of a job after he came out of prison in January 2018.

The native of Ikire, Osun State, admitted that he contacted Azeez to help him get a bus he could use for commercial purposes.

He stated that Azeez later told him there was a bus in Ilesha they could steal.

The 30-year-old driver said he agreed to pay Azeez and Olaniyan N400,000 each if the operation was successful, adding that they decided to sell the vehicle because he could not get the money to pay them.

He said, “I live in Lagos. I was a tanker driver. I went to prison last year because of shortage of the petroleum product I discharged at a filling station. I spent two months in the prison before I was released in January 2018.

“After I came out, I started looking for a job. I called Azeez, who used to repair the tanker I drove, to help me get a bus that I could use for transportation business. He said he would contact his friend in Osun. Three days later, he called me that he had found one in Ilesha.

“We went there and met with Olaniyan who took us to the church premises at night. It was agreed that I would pay them N400,000 each. We broke the side window glass of the bus to gain entry. Olaniyan unlocked the steering and connected some wires to start the bus. We drove it out of the church compound and brought it to Lagos on February 27. We took it to a painter in Ikorodu.

“They were disturbing me for their share but I could not get the money I was expecting from somebody to pay them. We later decided to sell the bus. Somebody linked Azeez to a buyer, unknown to him that he had been set up. The buyer eventually turned out to be an IRT official. Azeez led the police to arrest me. Police asked him to call Olaniyan to come to Lagos for his share and they arrested him.”

Azeez, 32-year-old father of two, said he was trying to help Adekunle to eke out a living.

He said, “I am a panel beater. I met Olaniyan at Ladipo Market, where he came to buy auto spare parts from Ilesha. The bus is worth N2.5m. Adekunle said he would give Saheed and me N400,000 each, but he could not pay on time.

“Olaniyan was disturbing me for his own share. It was in the process of selling the bus that I fell into the police trap.”

The University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) mortuary attendants, have been accused of removing the eyes of a dead child, an 18-month-old twin named Chuma who died of anaemia in the hospital’s children’s ward on August 3, 2018.

The father of the dead child who had gone back to pay the mortuary bill two weeks later, discovered to his horror that the corpse they brought out for him had been mutilated and the UPTH mortuary attendants could not account for how, when or why the body parts got missing.

The father of the dead child who spoke to Satturday Sun's correspondent said; 

“Even while the baby was still breathing, one of the nurses had approached me and asked me to pay N30,000 to have the baby buried somewhere. That got me annoyed. From that moment, they became nonchalant, claiming they were waiting for the blood test until the child died.”

It was gathered that the couple travelled to Ughelli, where their families had encouraged them to bring the body home for burial.

“I went to the mortuary on September 17 to pay the bill and retrieve the corpse,” continued the distraught dad. “I had N20, 000 with me. But after taking the money, the attendant informed me my total bill was N56, 000. I requested to see the corpse of my baby. But to my surprise, when he brought out the baby’s corpse, the two eyes had been removed.”

According to the father of the dead child, he was prevented from taking pictures of the corpse.

WALKING IN CHRIST.

As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him (Colossians 2:6).


How did you receive Christ Jesus? It was by faith, and faith is walking in the Word. So, walking in Christ is walking in the Word. Colossians 3:4 says Christ is your life; in Him you live, and move and have your being. You’re in the environment called Christ, and it’s important that you live your life every day, conscious of this reality.

Walking in Christ is beyond talking to Him in prayer because you have a need; rather, you’re to have the present-hour consciousness that you’re in Him, and He’s in you: you’re all that He says you are, have all that He says you have, and can do all that He says you can do. See yourself in this light and walk accordingly. Isaiah 2:5 says, “O house of Jacob, come ye, and let us walk in the light of the LORD.” You walk in the light of the Lord by walking in His Word.

1 John 1:5-6 says, “This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth.” You can’t walk in Christ and walk in darkness at the same time.

Darkness represents all that limits and hinders; all that’s evil. But what did Jesus say? “…I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life” (John 8:12).
When you walk in Christ, you experience the life of Christ every day; you’re forever victorious, prosperous, and in health! Live with the consciousness that you’re a victor in Christ Jesus.

SaharaReporters had earlier reported how the camp of Aminu Tambuwal — Saraki’s main opponent for the ticket — was pushing, and had made considerable progress, for the withdrawal of Sule Lamido, former Governor of Jigawa State and former Foreign Affairs Minister; David Mark, former Senate President, Niger State Governor and Communications Minister; and Ibrahim Dankwambo, the outgoing Governor of Gombe State, from the race to support the former House of Representatives Speaker.

To counter this, Atiku has been reaching out to “other strong aspirants”, and Saharareporters has been told the number-one focus is Saraki.

“Atiku has been meeting with other contestants , such as Saraki, with the hope that they would also drop their ambitions, so that it is going to be a game of Atiku and Tambuwal at the convention ground on Saturday,” said a source close to one of the "other strong aspirants" approached by the Atiku group.

SaharaReporters attempted to find out what Saraki thought of the entreaties, and what his decision would be.

Although a source in his camp confirmed the story “for certain”, he conceded it wasn’t immediately clear what decision Saraki would eventually take.

“I don’t think it is likely he would accept but I know he is under intense pressure,” said the second source, who asked not to be named.

“There is pressure on him; there have been meetings, and there have been talks for him to step down for Atiku. Atiku is trying to build consensus; if Saraki steps down for him, it means he has a good chance because Saraki’s delegates would definitely be passed on to him. I do not know what Saraki will decide, but I can confirm certainly that yes, he is under pressure to stand down for Atiku.”

The PDP presidential primary holds on Saturday, with Tambuwal, being the anointed of Nyesom Wike, the party's biggest financier, tipped to emerge victorious.

A serving corp member in Rivers state, Success Ochulor, is lucky to be alive after being involved in a ghastly motor accident on her way to Aba, Abia state. She revealed that even the driver broke the window and fled for his life, leaving her to her fate as the vehicle caught fire and burnt parts of her body including her buttocks.

Let me bore you a bit with my long post. Sit down and read what no man did except God. I'm a serving Corper in Rivers State. After my vouching on 3rd about 3:30pm, I was supposed to go back to Oproama, the Island where I serve but there was heavy downpour and all of that, the boat captain refused to cruise. I had so many things to do that same day, needed to Aba to get a report and since this captain guy was wasting time, I decided to board to Aba.

Getting to Eleme, the crowd waiting to board to Aba was so much. Now, because I was on my complete Corper's uniform, a private car decided to give me a lift up until oyigbo. It was so easy getting a bus  to Aba. The crowd wasn't much this time but the persons available rushed to the bus and someone got me a seat in the front row because I couldn't rush to get into the bus. Maybe he did that for me, because he saw me on my uniform. I was sitting exactly after the drivers seat.

Our trip started and it was just few minutes to 7pm. I was so happy that I got a bus finally without so much hassle. Just before we approached NEPA before flyover in Abia state. Our driver seems not to see the sienna coming towards him and in the quest to dodge the sienna car, he didn't see the gallop before him and boom....... Our driver hit the Mack heavy duty vehicle packed somewhere. A-ha!. It went right inside the Mack and our bus was stuck inside and I was just beside, in front of the vehicle. I couldn't move my legs as I was struggling with my legs. Fire started right under my buttocks and Goooooooooooooooooodddddddd, I was screaming  � and shouting and shouting.

The fire  was still burning up on me.. I was shouting, I couldn't move my legs. I saw myself dying in a stuck bus. I heard people breaking the windows from behind, people breaking the doors of the vehicle. A-ha, God, the pains,the fire, I saw death right before my eyes. But in a twinkle of an eye, as the driver broke through the window and escape through the window and my legs still stuck, I didn't know how, but somehow, I can't explain up till this moment, my eyes moved and I escaped through the window and the fire was still burning me up, I was running and people around shouted that I was fall into the water there. The water with all these blue green algae, Dear God!

The fire stopped. And the real pain started. I removed my khaki trouser on the road because it was so hot. I realised I couldn't move. My buttocks down to my legs has been burnt. I tried to walk a bit, I couldn't. Ahaa. My tears has been dried and I don't have anymore tears to shed.

I asked people around to help me to look for my ID card, ATM, money, Phones inside the black purse I had they told me the bus has been razed down and everything has been burnt. I couldn't cry at least, I'm alive right?. A woman gave me her wrapper to tie as my clothes were burnt.

A good Samaritan moved me to a hospital with his car to the hospital to the center city. My friends came around and today I'm alive. I can talk, I can blink, I can laugh. I can say anything I want to say.

I didn't die. The fire didn't consume me. My Bible told me that "even though I walk through the shadow of death, I fear no evil ". Even though, I'm hospitalised with so much pains, my body swollen up, 16 -hour drip, about 14 injections  �, been lying face down for over 48hours and still counting, can't turn sideways, can't stand, . Yet, I didn't die. I can't die. No. I can't die sorrowfully. I have a covenant with God that no harm shall come near me.

This God is too Good. If you see anyone, tell him or her that only Jesus can do this. And He did it for Success Ochulor.

Quote:The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Dr. Matthew Hassan Kukah, has said that no President of any country in the world can be as irresponsible in the usage of power as a Nigerian president.

He made this known in Akure, Ondo State on Friday while delivering the annual Ulefunta/Oyemekun Festival lecture entitled “Building blocks for a good society” held at the Francis Idibiye Lecture hall of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA).

According to Kukah, the structure of the Nigerian presidential office makes the holders of the office extremely powerful, so much that he can deploy power the way he wants.

“No president in the world has the kind of power the Nigerian president has and as such, no president in the world can be as irresponsible as the Nigerian president. His power is so much that he can give oil bloc to his girlfriend and many others. You thus can’t be a man of honour and live in a country like Nigeria and not be angry,” he said.

Kukah said that from the first Nigerian Prime Minister, Alhaji Tafawa Balewa to President Muhammadu Buhari, virtually all of them were dragged into the presidential office, maintaining that this was unlike the presidency of the United States of America where the president does not emerge by circumstance.

“What is the problem? It is the dilemma of leadership. In America, there are basic expectations of what a president should be. For instance, he must have gone through Harvard as an institution, he must have language and track records, not even wealth. You can’t surprise the system.

Here in Nigeria, local government chairman wants to be governor; the governor wants to be president and the president doesn’t want to go! Many states have two governors representing them at the National Assembly. Governors have control and monopoly of resources of state and they use same resources to oppress them,” he said.

Kukah, who said that the Nigerian society is in ferment, maintained that the instability type that Nigeria faces as a country is inevitable in any system.

He, however, said that developing mechanisms that will confront the instability is the hallmark of great countries.

In Nigeria, it is not a question of looking for trouble because trouble is already here. The Nigerian state has no capacity to protect itself and there is no loyalty to Nigeria from its citizens but to those who help individuals to get to positions in the system,” he said.

Kukah, however, singled two former Nigerian leaders out of the leadership rot, Chief Obafemi Awolowo and Alhaji Aminu Kano, whom he called “architects of a good society.”

“Awolowo, for his major quintessential evidence as somebody who already figured out what he would do with power if he got it. He understood the building blocks for an egalitarian society. Aminu Kano single handedly took on the feudal class in Northern society and had a deep understanding of society, even as he textually talked about a free society in a way and manner that didn’t offend religion,” he said.

While stating that it is not enough for a people to have the building blocks of a good society alone, Kukah also maintained that Nigeria has not been able to build a good society because the country has not obeyed the rules of design.

“We have to understand the building blocks of society which is not too different from the rules of building a house. A good society is not different from the building blocks of society. When a building collapses, it didn’t collapse in a day. It began to collapse a long time ago. For us to build a good society, we have to have eyes that monitor the needs, growth and development and feelings of that society. Then you can be sure of the quality of that society,” he said.

While reviewing the lecture, Professor Kole Omotoso, lauded Kukah for what he called a very profound lecture and said that the only point of departure he had in the lecture was Kukah’s submission that education has the potential to remedy the problems of Nigeria’s existence.

Guests at the occasion included the Deji of Akure, Oba Aladetoyinbo Aladelusi, Chief Reuben Fasoranti, the chairman of the occasion, and many others.

Austin Okafor, a 300 level Entrepreneurship student of the Department of Management Sciences, University of Benin, has died as a result of what his colleagues called insensitivity on the part of the school management.

According to reports, Okafor had gone to the Health Centre on October, 2, 2018, for medical attention and was referred to the Uniben Teaching Hospital, on Wednesday morning, after he started urinating blood.

It was gathered that despite the emergency situation, the ambulance conveying him with no life support facilities, was still made to stop at the Student Affairs Division to obtain a clearance permit before he could be treated at UBTH.

However, after about a 35-minute delay in getting him to UBTH, Okafor died while doctors were struggling to resuscitate him at the Accident & Emergency Ward after another 15 minutes of negligence.

The PDP leaders including Senate President Bukola Saraki, Speaker of the House of representatives, Yakubu Dogara, and the national chairman of the party, Uche Secondus, are leading the protesters to the headquarter of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja.

The protesters are demanding that INEC declare PDP candidate Ademola Adeleke as the winner of the election.

A 30-year old married woman, Mrs. Blessing David, has been arrested for allegedly taking photograph of her neighbour’s wife, Mrs. Charity, that she caught red handed having sex with their security guard.

P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened at Dele Kulajolu Street in Ago Palace Way in Okota, Lagos where they reside.

Mrs. Blessing David was arraigned before the Isolo Magistrates court, Lagos, for conduct likely to cause breach of public peace by taking Charity’s photograph.

According to the police, Mrs. Blessing had conducted herself in a manner to cause the breach of public peace by telling Charity that she had been having immoral affairs with their security guard, one Joseph Koomaali, employed by the residents.

To prove her claim, she was said to have used her Samsung Android phone to take shots of Charity. P.M.EXPRESS was unable to confirm if the photographs in question were taken during the sex romp as claimed by Mrs. Blessing but the police stated it in the court charge sheet.

That caused serious rift between Charity and Blessing which made Charity to go to Ago Police Station to report the incident. Mrs. Blessing was then arrested and taken to the station where she still maintained and told Charity to her face that she had been sleeping with Mr. Joseph.

However, the police viewed Blessing’s action as capable of causing breached of public peace and charged her to the court for the alleged offence.
P.M.EXPRESS scooped that Mr. Joseph was employed as the security guard and after some time Mrs Blessing started suspecting Joseph’s closeness with Charity and secretly used her phone to snap them before she confronted Charity. Mr. Joseph could not be reached by our reporter who visited the house to confirm Blessing’s claims as their neighbour said he had not be around since the incident happened.

However, some of the neighbours blamed Blessing for her attempt to put Charity’s marriage in jeopardy. The neighbours reasoned that if such actually existed between Charity and Joseph, it was not Blessing’s business since Mr. Joseph was not her husband.
The defendant, Blessing was arraigned and she pleaded not guilty.

The prosecutor, Mr. Uagbale, asked the court to give a short adjournment to enable the police to prove the case against the defendant since she pleaded not guilty.

The Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. O.A. Teluwo, granted Blessing bail in the sum N10, 000 with one surety in like sum.

Fayose demands N20b damages, apology from EFCC

Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State has demanded N20 billion as damages from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for placing him on watch list and directing that he should be arrested if he attempted to travel out of the country.

Fayose also demanded a written apology, to be copied to all security agencies in the country and published in three national newspapers and the social media.

He is also seeking withdrawal of the request/directive to security agencies to place him on watch list.


He noted that as a sitting governor conferred with constitutional immunity against any criminal proceedings, the anti-graft agency lacks the power to place him on watch list.

Fayose’s lawyers threatened: “Unless these demands are met within 72 hours of the date of this letter, we shall not hesitate to carry out our client’s firm instruction to proceed forthwith to institute legal action against you to seek appropriate remedies before the law court without any further recourse to you.”

Special Assistant to the Governor on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, said, in a statement issued yesterday, that the demands were contained in a letter by the governor’s counsel, Obafemi Adewale, dated September 3, 2018, which was received at the Abuja office of the
EFCC yesterday.

The letter reads in part: “By a letter dated 12th September, 2018, you instructed all security agencies in Nigeria, including but not limited to the Nigerian Customs Service, to place our client on a watch list and to arrest him at sight upon ‘suspicion’ that he might be attempting to flee the country.


In your exact words, we quote: ‘The under listed suspect is under investigation in connection with the above mentioned offences and there is reasonable suspicion suggesting that he may likely leave the country either through the land borders, airport, or seaport in order to invade investigation.

Hence, you are kindly requested to watch-list and arrest him.’

“By these words, you have not only fallen foul of the clear provision of Section 308 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic which
grants our client, as an incumbent governor, immunity from any criminal process/proceedings, you have also exposed our client to ridicule, opprobrium, odium and hatred in the eyes and opinion of the ordinary man on the street and falsely and mischievously portrayed him as a common fugitive, a run-away from the law who could/should be arrested at sight like a dangerous criminal.”

The counsel said “by this act and words, particularly coming after our client had by his letter of 10th September, 2018 duly received in your office on 11th September, 2018 voluntarily without any prompting by you or anybody else, offered to report in your office in Abuja on 16th September, 2018, the very next day after his tenure as governor of Ekiti State would have ended and his immunity lifted, you have demonstrated premeditated mischief, open hatred for our client and contempt for his office as governor.”

CBN Calls for Mobile Courts to Try Currency Hawkers

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) yesterday disclosed plan to collaborate with the Ministry of Justice and other government agencies to establish mobile courts that will be charged with the responsibility of prosecuting currency hawkers and those in the habit of defacing and spraying the nation’s currency at ceremonies.

The CEO, FSDH Merchant Bank Limited, Ms. Hamda Ambah, disclosed this while briefing journalists at the end of a Bankers’ Committee meeting in Lagos.


She said the initiative would be done in collaboration with the banks as well.

Ambah said, “We are going to be disseminating information on the right way to handle the naira so that people do not handle the money incorrectly.

“And specifically, one of the things we are frowning on and action is to be taken on people who sell the currency.

“In the near future, there is going to be an introduction of mobile court to handle such situation and those caught would be dealt with on the spot.”

Providing more insights on issues surrounding handling of the naira, the Director, Corporate Communications of the CBN, Mr. Isaac Okorafor, said the CBN Act 2017 outlaws any action by anyone who sprays, squeezes, dances on or writes on it.

According to him, “That Act makes it possible to give six months imprisonment or a fine of N50,000 or both the fine and imprisonment.

“We are collaborating with every agency of government, the Ministry of Justice, judiciary and the Nigeria Police and we would insist that those who abuse the naira would be punished.”

Also speaking during the media briefing, the Chief Executive Officer, Access Bank Plc, Mr. Herbert Wigwe, said the committee deliberated on the real sector and ways to continue to pursue growth in the real sector.

He said, “It was resolved at the Bankers’ Committee that discretionary Cash Reserve Requirement (CRR) that has been built over time should be channelled towards agriculture in a very impactful manner.

“The deliberations were that most of the monies should also be channelled towards the manufacturing sector so basically looking at the entire value chain of the manufacturing sector.

“The idea was that if it was done properly in the way it is being pursued, very soon or sometime in the future the central bank may start looking at ways to reduce allocations to specific items because we would have been producing sufficient locally to enable us restrict imports. That way, the pressure on our reserves would be reduced.”

Furthermore, Wigwe stressed the need to continue to pursue import substitution policies and support agriculture to the point where importation of basic goods would be minimised.

He said, “And we should support manufacturing to the extent that it would minimise importation of manufactured items particularly items that can be produced in Nigeria.

“What the Bankers Committee is saying is that we should basically devote enough resources to different items such that over time, and soon, we can no longer allocate resources anymore because it would be produced locally.

“That is the only way in the long-term we can create a robust economy that is not subjected to vagaries of oil prices.”

On his part, the Director, Banking Supervision, CBN, Mr. Ahmad Abdullahi, disclosed that the Bankers’ Committee noted the challenges the economy is facing “are challenges that are not peculiar to only Nigeria but to all emerging economies.”

“However, we recognise that all hands should be on the deck for us to work together to ensure that the slowdown in economic growth is reversed so we don’t get into the same territory with south Africa,” the CBN Director said.

Also, the Managing Director, Union Bank of Nigeria Plc, Mr. Emeka Emuwa said, “For payment services, there is a draft framework which should come out in 24 hours. We would talk about the guidelines and framework which would be able to deepen financial inclusion through a specific model of payment service providers.”

Mourinho takes decision on resignation as Man United boss

Report: Air Transport Generates $2.7tn Income Globally

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has announced that the global air transport sector supports 65.5 million jobs and $2.7 trillion in global economic activity, according to new research released by the Air Transport Action Group (ATAG), an arm of the world body.

This was contained in a report titled: ‘Aviation: Benefits Beyond Borders,’ which explored the fundamental role civil aviation plays for today’s society and addresses the economic, social and environmental impacts of this global industry.


Launching the report at the ATAG Global Sustainable Aviation Summit in Geneva, ATAG’s Executive Director, Michael Gill, said, “Let’s take a step back and think about how advances in air transport have changed the way people and businesses connect with each other – the reach we have today is extraordinary. More people in more parts of the world than ever before are taking advantage of safe, fast and efficient travel.

“There are over 10 million women and men working within the industry to make sure 120,000 flights and 12 million passengers a day are guided safely through their journeys. The wider supply chain, flow-on impacts and jobs in tourism made possible by air transport show that at least 65.5 million jobs and 3.6 per cent of global economic activity are supported by our industry.”

IATA also said the report looked at two future scenarios for growth in air traffic and related jobs and economic benefits, saying with an open, free-trade approach, the growth in air transport will support some 97.8 million jobs and $5.7 trillion in economic activity in 2036.

However, the report warned that if governments creates a more fragmented world with isolationism and protectionist policies, over 12 million fewer jobs and $1.2 trillion less in economic activity would be supported by air transport.

“By working with one another, learning from each other’s cultures and trading openly, we not only create a stronger economic outlook, but we also continue the conditions for peaceful interaction across the globe. Aviation is the key driver for this positive connectivity.”

Speaking about the release of the new report, the Director General of Airports Council International, Angela Gittens, said: “Airports are crucial links in the air transport value chain that drive economic and social benefits for the local, regional, and national communities they serve. Airports act as catalysts for employment, innovation, and improved global connectivity and trade.

“In responding to the growing global demand for air services, airports – in partnership with the wider aviation community – are also taking a lead role in minimising and mitigating the environmental effects of aviation and pursuing sustainable development.”

Also, the Civil Air Navigation Services Organisation Director General, Jeff Poole said: “The provision of efficient, safe and cost-effective air traffic management is a key enabler to the benefits of aviation. CANSO and its Members are achieving this through new technologies (e.g. spaced-based surveillance, digitisation) and new procedures (e.g. air traffic flow management). However, States need to play their part by enabling harmonised airspace and investments in ATM infrastructure”.

The Director General and CEO of the International Air Transport Association, Alexandre de Juniac said, “Airlines empower people’s lives and turbo-charge the global economy through a worldwide network that safely carries more than 4 billion passengers and 62 million tonnes of freight each year.

“In challenging political, economic and environmental times, the ability of aviation – the business of freedom – to sustainably connect cultures and spread prosperity beyond borders has never been more important.”

The Director General of the International Business Aviation Council, Kurt Edwards added, “All sectors of aviation contribute to the industry’s benefits globally. The business aviation sector employs almost 1.5 million people around the world, contributes hundreds of billions of dollars to the global economy, and provides connections to and economic activity in remote regions and underserved locations.

“Business aviation allows businesses to thrive in small or medium-size towns and to stay connected to the rest of the world. Often, business aircraft operations at a remote airstrip serve as the catalyst for economic development in small communities.”

As Green Bond issuance set to gain traction in the country, the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) is proposing a set of rules that will guide the listing of those bonds on the exchange.


Green bonds are special bonds issued to finance or re-finance in part or in full new and existing eligible environmental or climate projects.

The federal government kicked off the issuance of green bonds by raising N10.69 billion last December and this was expected to be followed by more issuances by the government and other corporates.

And to facilitate the subsequent listing of those bonds, the NSE has exposed rules to market participants for their contributions.

The rules are titled: “Rules for listing of green bonds on Nigerian Stock Exchange.”

The NSE proposed that the green bonds shall comply with the core components of the Green Bond Principles (GBP), while the issuer shall demonstrate transparency. According to the proposed rules, the issuer shall also comply with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)’s regulations.

Among the listing requirements stipulate that: “Issuer shall state clearly in the prospectus that the bond; Issuer shall demonstrate that the proposed Green Bond shall comply with the GBP.”

The GBP and the principles are a set of voluntary process guidelines that recommend transparency and disclosure and promote integrity in the development of the Green Bond market by clarifying the approach for issuance of a Green Bond.

The GBP were intended for broad use by the market: they provide Issuers guidance on the key components involved in launching a credible green bond; they aid investors by ensuring availability of information necessary to evaluate the environmental impact of their green bond investments and they assist underwriters by moving the market towards standard disclosures which will facilitate transactions.

Also, the proposed rules stipulate that proceeds shall be managed separately from other funds, and their use shall be monitored and reported throughout the tenor of the green bond.

“The bond prospectus and other relevant documentation shall clearly describe the purpose or projects towards which the proceeds shall be applied and how the projects address environmental/climate concerns. Use of proceeds for green projects aimed at addressing key areas of environmental and climate concern Include but shall not be limited to climate change adaptation, clean transportation, green buildings, sustainable waste management, natural resources depletion, renewable energy, energy efficiency, prevention of loss of biodiversity, pollution prevention and control, terrestrial and aquatic biodiversity conservation, sustainable water and wastewater management,” the NSE said.

It added that the issuer shall open an escrow account specifically for the net proceeds of the issue and shall prudently manage the proceeds from the offer in order to ensure strict allocation to identified proposed projects.

Aminu Waziri has urged all the party’s delegates for tomorrow’s presidential primaries to vote for Governor Tambuwal as PDP flag bearer in 2019 presidential elections.

This is coming as the spokesman of the Tambuwal Presidential Campaign Organisation, Dr Okey Ikechukwu, has said that Nigeria’s best chance of a president that can unite Nigeria, restore a sense of community and give the nation 21st Century leadership is the Sokoto governor.


The group in an open letter to PDP delegates on the presidential primaries, which was made available to journalists yesterday, said the opposition need a candidate like Tambuwal, who has constitutional immunity, adding that PDP cannot afford to have “a candidate that can be thoroughly harassed and blackmailed to succumb by the desperate Buhari administration.”

That is, in summary, the rationale behind tomorrow’s gathering.”

On the issue of members belonging to other alliances, he said, “What it means is that we are progressing towards gradual transformation; from a social movement to a political movement that might metamorphose into a political merger.” On whether their members will contest in 2019, he said,

According to him, the present administration is committed to ensuring that the importation of petroleum products is curtailed.

Kachukwu stated this on Thursday in Ibigwe-Ohaji in Ohaji\Egbema council area of Imo during the ground-breaking for construction of the 5,000 BPD Modular Refinery by Walter Smith petro-chemical limited.

The project is being partnered by the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB)

He said that the Buhari administration was committed to ensuring that the nation’s refineries became functional by the end of 2019.

“It would be sad if by the end of 2019 we are still importing fuel from abroad.

“So, we are committed in repairing the refineries; by that we can at least process about 500,000 barrels of crude per day.

The policy of this administration is `go back to refining about 20 per cent of our crude which will move to 50 per cent in the next five years’.

The Minister who commended management of Walter Smith for partnering the NCDMB to realize the project said that he was hopeful that in 18 months the modular refinery would be inaugurated.

Also, the Executive Secretary of the NCDMB, Mr Kesiye Wabote, said the Board invested US $10 million to catalyze the development of the Modular refinery and took 30 per cent equity in the project.

He added that the NCDMB would divest when the modular refinery was fully developed and operational.

Wabote pointed out that NCDMB was promoting the Walter Smith Modular refinery as part of its capacity development mandate .

He said that the investment was also in line with the Nigeria Content 10- year strategic plan.

The Chairman of Walter Smith , Mr Abdulrazaq Isa, said that the Walter Smith 5,000 BPD Modular refinery was conceptualized in 2011 to mitigate the frequent outage of the third-party export trans-Niger pipeline.

He added that it was to optimize the full value of the country’s produced crude through in-country products for the domestic market .

“When operational in 18 months time we will.produce per day: Naphtha – 24,643 liters, Kerosene – 54,691 liters, Diesel – 300,168 liters, HPFO – 409,710 liters.

“The refined products will be sold and evacuated from the refinery via dedicated trucks from bay five truck rack where products are loaded into the tankers.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has alleged that the All Progressives Congress (APC) had concluded plans to disrupt its convention slated for Saturday and Sunday, in Port Harcourt.

The PDP National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbinduyan made the allegation at a press conference held at the party’s national secretariat Thursday, in Abuja.

“There are plots by the ruling party to disrupt our national convention. We are aware of the machinations of the ruling party which is afraid of the election to halt the efforts of the opposition to elect a candidate to go into a contest with President Muhammadu Buhari,” Ologbondiyan claimed.

When asked to give details about the plot, the opposition spokesman said, “It can be any form of machination; it could be by court, or any other form and we are alerting Nigerians of the efforts to stop our national convention.”

He however said no force or any form of intimidation would stop the PDP from electing its presidential candidate as scheduled.

He said the party has written to all formations of government notifying them of the convention slated for Port Harcourt. He added that accreditation for participants would be done in Port Harcourt.

In a related development, our correspondent gathered that all organs of the party have concluded plans to meet with all the presidential aspirants and key stakeholders of the party ahead of the convention.

The essence of the meeting, Daily Trust learnt was to pave way for the aspirants to interact in order to ensure a hitch-free exercise and ensure there is no post-convention crisis.

ONE ROOM BREWERY! Man arrested for producing, distributing fake alcoholic drinks in Lagos

The Lagos State Police Command have arrested a 38-year-old for producing and distributing fake alcoholic drinks.

Emmanuel Nwodu was arrested along Mosalashi market, Sango, Agege with two cartons of alcoholic drinks suspected to be adulterated.

On interrogation, the suspect confessed that he produces the drinks in his one-room shop at Mosalashi market, Agege.

He later led operatives to the said shop at Mosalashi market where he concocts the drinks.

A search warrant was executed and the following items were recovered therein: two 30 litres of chemical, suspected to be ethanol; two cartons of Elders Aromatic Schnapps, suspected to be fake; fifty one (51) small bottles of Chelsea dry gin, suspected to be fake; thirty-five (35) pieces of Chelsea cork; five(5) labels of Lords, Chelsea and Elders alcoholic drinks.

The suspect was charged to court on Wednesday.

On April 3, 2018, at Ajuwon market, Mushin, the Command arrested and prosecuted a 55-year-old trader, Benjamin Ojukwu, for producing and distributing fake wine and alcoholic drinks.

Also, on April 11, 2018, the Commissioner of a police, CP Edgal Imohimi, arrested the owners of an illegal brewery, valued at over N120 million, where fake stout and malt drinks were produced at Igbogbo Bayeku area of Ikorodu.

The factory was subsequently closed by the authorities.

"HE CAME TO LIVE IN YOU"


Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you (John 14:17).

Just before His glorious levitation into heaven, the Lord Jesus lectured His disciples on the person of the Holy Spirit. He told them that the Holy Spirit would be in them: “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth” (Acts 1:8). And from the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit came upon them, to live in them; He came upon them for the purpose of living in them.

In the Old Testament, Solomon built God a temple, and at the dedication of the temple, the presence of God came upon it (2 Chronicles 5:13-14). God had to come upon and into that temple to make it His own. But He wasn’t satisfied. Acts 7:48 says, “Howbeit the most High dwelleth not in temples made with hands….” He had said in Proverbs 8:31, _*“…and my delights were with the sons of men.” This is the essence of Christianity: Christ in you. It’s what Jesus brought, and made possible.

When you were born again, God made you His own; you became His offspring and His living temple. From that moment, you were sanctified unto Him and became one with Him. He sanctified your vessel, your body, to become His house. You’re God’s dwelling place; He actually does live in you. And because He lives in you, He speaks through you and walks in you (2 Corinthians 6:16). He manifests Himself in and through you.

Think about it: the great God of glory, the Monarch of the universe, lives in you! He created you in His image and in His likeness to make it possible for you to be filled with His Spirit. What a blessing! What a privilege! Always honour the Spirit; appreciate and celebrate His presence in your life. Fellowship with Him often, and your life will be an endless stream of blessings and the supernatural.

PRAYER

Dear Father, I thank you for the presence of the Holy Spirit in me; I’m filled with God. Therefore, there’s no room for sickness, disease, anger, jealousy or anything of darkness in me. I’m full of light, and I light up my world. I’m never alone, because the Holy Spirit is forever in me, and with me; He’s my ever-present help in time of need! Hallelujah!

Chioma: let’s go to Food and Fun. I haven’t been there in a long while.

Mr Ambrose: anything else you’ll like to do? Like seeing a movie afterwards?

Chioma: ermmm, we can go swimming.

(The couple got to Food and Fun and were given a table for two beside another couple, who happened to be Nina.
She was on a first date with someone she met over the internet. Mr Ambrose did not recognise her as he barely saw her face the day they visited his office.

The couple ordered their preferred meals and as they spoke and ate, Nina listened and recorded their conversations!)

Mr Ambrose: so tell me, how do you think we are doing in terms of our family life?

Chioma: I think we are doing great!

Mr Ambrose: do you think we need to increase the budget since we are going to have Kate as a live-in Nanny, from next month?

Chioma: not really. Kate is not so much of a food person. Let’s leave it the way it is at the moment but if after next month, I think it wasn’t sufficient , then I’ll let you know.

Mr Ambrose: what about security? You know it broke my heart when Tatiana spoke about Mr thief the other day.
She still has memories of that robbery. My poor daughter! I want to make sure she never witnesses such horror again including Shasha. No child deserves to witness that.

Chioma: that’s what happens when you have a very intelligent child. But I think Patrick is doing a good job, we don’t need more security. And dont forget, except the Lord keeps a city, the watchmen watch in vain! God watches over us.

ELDER EMEKA: we have spoken to our daughter and she is still maintaining that she hasn’t slept with any other man.
As much as I understand where you are coming from, because of the pictures, the money and the messages from whatever you young people call it, I am choosing to believe our daughter.

CHIOMA: oh come on, Kate! Keep your money. And please whenever you cook, take some to Patrick Okay?

KATE: if you don’t take this money from me, as soon as I get to that house, I will pack my things and leave?. I’ll be giving Patrick lunch henceforth.

CHIOMA: (sighs and takes the money) Thanks, darling. Please look after them and never ever leave them. You are their second mum

KATE: I promise.

(Chioma managed to convince the kids that she needs to go look after poorly grandma Nkechi. After yet another questioning session from Tatiana, she agreed to let her go without them.

Quote:There were indications on Wednesday that the Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, conceded victory to Babajide Sanwo-Olu, his main opponent for the All Progressives Congress governorship ticket in Lagos, to calm frayed nerves and avert impeachment.

There had been expectation that the governor would fight the declaration of Sanwo-Olu as the winner of the state’s Tuesday governorship primary, which was initially cancelled by the APC National Working Committee panel that had promised to announce a new date for the primary.

The panel made a U-turn on Wednesday to declare Sanwo-Olu the winner, sparking speculations that the governor would reject the move.

A few hours after the panel’s new decision, the governor’s media team sent a press statement that the governor would host a “world press briefing” by 2.pm, causing more speculations.

In the briefing, which eventually turned out to be a broadcast by 4pm, Ambode accepted defeat and congratulated Sanwo-Olu.

One of our correspondents gathered through sources in both Ambode and Asiwaju Bola Tinubu’s camps that the move was meant to remove the tension, as well as avert the impeachment move being considered by party elders.

One of the sources said before and after the broadcast, Ambode had contacted Tinubu and some party leaders in a bid to assure them of his loyalty to the party, and in order to avert the impeachment option.

“He (Ambode) did not want the matter to get to that level; that is why he accepted the defeat to reduce the tension in the state and stop any panicky action by the party elders. He also wanted them to leave him in peace to complete all his projects,” the source said.

The APC Publicity Secretary in Lagos State, Mr Joe Igbokwe, said he did not know about any peace move by the incumbent governor, as well as any deal.

He said, “I don’t know about that.”

One of Tinubu’s aides also said it was still early to say.

He said, “Ambode just made his speech, every other thing would flow from the governor’s decision to accept defeat and congratulate Sanwo-Olu.”

NWC bows to Lagos APC, declares Sanwo-Olu winner

Earlier on Wednesday, the APC panel changed its position on the validity of the primary conducted in the state on Tuesday.

The fresh stance was contrary to the position of the NWC panel, led by Mr Clement Ebri, on Tuesday that the primary did not hold.

The panel said on Wednesday that the primary held.

It went on to declare Sanwo-Olu as the winner of the primary with 970,851 votes ahead of Ambode, who recorded 72,901 votes.

The Ebri-led panel in a press statement, said, “After resolving some of the hiccups, the Lagos State APC Governorship Primary Committee collated the results from the 245 wards in the 20 local government areas.

“At the end of the exercise, these are the votes scored by the aspirants: 1. Gov Akinwunmi Ambode, 72,901 votes. 2. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, 970,851 votes.

“Following these results, I, Clement Ebri, the Chairman of the Lagos State APC Governorship Primary Committee hereby declare Babajide Sanwo-Olu as the winner.”

‘Why APC NWC upheld primary’

Another source said the decision to uphold the result was informed by the presence of relevant government agencies, including representatives of the Independent National Electoral Commission at the primary.

A member of the party leadership, who spoke to one of our correspondents on condition of anonymity said, “Most people spoken to said the governorship primary was held in Lagos yesterday (Tuesday).”

Another party source confided in one of our correspondents that the President left the decision to the APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, who had earlier said there was election in Lagos.

The source added that Ebri did not take directive from the NWC before announcing that no primary took place.

Ambode accepts defeat, congratulates Sanwo-Olu

In his broadcast on Wednesday, Ambode congratulated Sanwo-Olu, saying it was time for the state to move forward.

The governor said although events of the last few days had been characterised by intense political activities which created tension, the interest of the state superseded that of any personal ambition.

He therefore urged members of the party and all Lagosians to support the candidate of the party.

He said, “The APC is a great party and the interests of our beloved state must always supersede that of any person or group. It is in this regard that I wholeheartedly congratulate the winner of the Lagos State APC Primaries, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu and urge all Lagosians to immediately support our party’s gubernatorial candidate in the 2019 elections.”

While assuring that he would work to ensure a smooth transition in 2019, the governor said the progress of the state was non-negotiable, as he would remain forever devoted to the development of Lagos.

The governor thanked Tinubu, the leadership of the party and all Lagosians for the support extended to him, and urged the people to continue to support the APC.

Lagos is under siege

However, the Convener of Lagos Solidarity Forum, Comrade Mark Adebayo, said on Wednesday that Lagos was being pushed in the direction of the precipice by enemies of democracy.

In a statement, the group boss said the state APC primary was “another hatchet’s job.”

He said, “Every society that has ceased to exist starts from the point of aggravated injustice that provokes intractable anarchy.

“Unfortunately, Lagos State is being pushed in the direction of that precipice by forces which can best be described as, not only enemies of democracy, but enemies of the people. These same forces have been responsible for the mobile retrogression of Nigeria since 1999 that we have moved into civilian governance. Their weapons have been domination, imposition and brazen overthrow of the people’s mandate.

“The shameful shenanigan orchestrated by the APC governorship primary committee chaired by Clement Ebri, the former Cross River State governor erroneously thought to be a man of impeccable integrity was another hatchet’s job executed in the service of merchants of inhumanity and derogation of all elements of societal value….

“The time has come for Lagosians to rise up through a mass action to liberate ourselves.”

Former spokesman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bolaji Abdullahi, has insisted that Senate President Bukola Saraki did not betray him.

He said this in reaction to reports that Saraki worked against his governorship ambition.

Abdullahi withdrew from the race during the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) primary on Monday.

In a statement, Abdullahi said although the outcome of the primaries may have been disappointing, he has “accepted it as the will of Allah”.

“Following the reactions that have trailed the Governorship Primaries of our party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara state, it has become imperative for me to make the following clarifications.

“While the outcome of the primaries may have been disappointing, I have accepted it as the will of Almighty Allah, who alone gives power. I want to thank all those who have expressed concerns for me. I am humbled and flattered by your support.

“However, I will like to note that there are many factors at play in politics. Therefore, interpreting what happened as betrayal is not correct. My leader, Dr. Bukola Saraki, did not betray me.

“Whatever sacrifices I have made in the past were based on my personal principles, and were not contingent on expectations of any reward. I remain a loyal member of the Saraki political family under the leadership of Dr. Bukola Saraki,” Abdullahi said.
