The World Bank has once more reduced its growth projection on Nigeria in 2018 to 1.9 per cent, down from the 2.1 per cent it had estimated for the country in April.

The Bank hinged its decision on the contraction in the agricultural sectoras a result of the farmers and herders’ crisis recorded by the country most part of this year.
It explained: “In Nigeria, declining oil production and contraction in the agriculture sector partially offset a rebound in the services sector and dampened non-oil growth, all of which affected economic recovery.”

“Nigeria’s recovery faltered in the first half of the year. Oil production fell, partly due to pipeline closures.
“The agriculture sector contracted, as conflict over land between farmers and herders disrupted crop production, partially offsetting a rebound in the services sector and dampening non-oil growth.”


This is coming as the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) yesterday allayed worries over the fluctuation in Nigeria’s external reserves, assuring that with its current level at over $44 billion, there is no cause for alarm.
The multilateral institution stated this in its October 2018 ‘Africa Pulse,’ a bi-annual analysis of the state of African economies released yesterday.

In April, the World Bank had predicted growth of 3.1 per cent, up from 2.3 per cent last year.
But it anticipated that growth in the region would increase from 2.7 per cent in 2018, to 3.3 per cent in 2019, rising to an average of 3.6 per cent between 2020 and 2021.

“The slower pace of the recovery in sub-Saharan Africa (0.4 percentage points lower than the April forecast) is explained by the sluggish expansion in the region’s three largest economies, Nigeria, Angola, and South Africa.
“In Nigeria, declining oil production and contraction in the agriculture sector partially offset a rebound in the services sector and dampened non-oil growth, all of which affected economic recovery.

“A decline in oil production, due to underinvestment and key fields reaching maturity, weighed on growth in Angola. South Africa’s economy slipped into a technical recession following two consecutive quarters of contracting economic activity, with agriculture, mining, and construction acting as major drags on growth,” it added.

The World Bank noted that several oil exporters in the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa (CEMAC) saw an uptick in growth. With higher oil prices and an increase in oil production, both Chad and the Republic of Congo were expected to climb out of recession.

According to the Washington-based institution, growth in non-resource-rich countries remained solid, supported by agricultural production and services on the production side, and household consumption and public investment on the demand side.

“With fiscal deficits narrowing, government debt levels appear to have stabilised, but vulnerabilities remain. Compared to 2012 to 2013, the median public debt level remains high, especially in oil-exporting countries. Debt rose in about two-fifths of the countries in 2017 and was above 60 per cent of GDP in one-third of the countries.
“The external environment facing Sub-Saharan Africa is more challenging for several reasons. These include moderating economic growth among its main trading partners, the stronger US dollar, heightened trade policy uncertainty, and tightening global financial conditions.

“While the tightness of oil supply suggests that oil prices are likely to remain elevated through the rest of 2018 and into 2019, metals prices have been softer than previously forecast and may remain subdued in 2019 and 2020 amid muted demand, particularly in China.

“Against this backdrop, the economic recovery in Sub-Saharan Africa is expected to continue at a gradual pace, supported by a rebound in oil production in Nigeria and Angola, the easing of drought conditions that had depressed agricultural output, and a rise in domestic demand in some countries,” it stated.

“Growth in the region is projected to increase from 2.7 per cent in 2018 to 3.3 per cent in 2019, rising to an average of 3.6 per cent in 2020–21. However, per capita income growth would remain below its long-term average in many countries, highlighting the need for comprehensive policy measures to raise potential output.
“The inefficiencies in the way the region combines its factors of production has become increasingly relevant in explaining Sub-Saharan Africa’s lower aggregate productivity compared to industrialised countries.”

CBN Allays Concerns over Declining Reserves
In a related development, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) yesterday allayed worries over the fluctuation in external reserves, assuring that with its current levels at over $44 billion, there’s no cause for alarm.
The apex bank further assured that it will continue to ensure that finance is provided for all Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs) which may require support to be able to produce and grow the economy.

CBN acting Director, Corporate Communications, Mr. Isaac Okoroafor, said not only does the apex bank have the reserves to defend the naira, it is also sufficient to encourage small businesses to produce to boost the economy.

He further explained that the current instance of reversal of capital flows was not peculiar to the country as some other economies are also affected following the recent hike in interest rate by the United States’ Federal Reserve.
Speaking at the CBN special day at the ongoing 13th Abuja International Trade Fair, the apex bank’s spokesman added that the country’s current reserves level could support between 17 to 20 months of import compared to the international standard, which stipulated for at least three months of import to remain at a comfortable level.


“And I also want to make it clear: it’s also on social media that our reserves dropped by $1.45 billion in one month…We are not politicians- of course, I want you to understand that the reserves level is a moving figure; at times, it rises and other times, it comes down. And as we speak, it’s a little over $44. Giving reasons for the fluctuation in external reserves, Okoroafor said,”You’ll recall that there was a time we survived on even $23.2 billion; the economy was running. “Now, we are over $44 billion and the reason why it is going down gently is because there’s a global squeeze on emerging markets: the Central Bank of the USA which is the FED had been raising interest rate and you know international capital goes to where it earns better returns.

“So, those who came into our economy to take advantage of the returns here seems to have found better returns in the US- and it’s not just in Nigeria- it’s happening to South Africa, Egypt, Pakistan, Iran, Argentina, Brazil, Turkey even China.”

According to him:”China has lost over 1.3 per cent of its currency, Argentina lost 134 per cent; Iran, India, some of them lost 18 percent, 17 percent- but here in Nigeria, our currency has gained 6 percent in the last one year.
“You can see that the reversal of capital flows which is eating most economies and bringing about depreciation in their currency is not affecting us for two reasons- we’ve built enough buffers of reserves to be able to tackle situations like these.

“Secondly, we are using the reserves to defend the value of our currency- so that also accounts for why it’s dropping.
“Investors who brought in dollars- of course, we’ve a capital importation policy- if you bring your dollars, when you’re leaving, we give it to you. And so they brought their dollars and they want to leave to the US, we give them because our word is our bond and so that has tended to make the reserves drop a little.”

He, however, assured that, “At $44 billion, we still have between 17 and 18 months of import cover, meanwhile, the international standard is three months of import cover.
“We are very comfortable- we have the reserves to defend the value of the naira, and we have the local support to also encourage our SMEs to go into production.”

The CBN director also seized the opportunity to counsel the trade fair participants on how best they could access the various interventions by the bank.
He said,”Unfortunately, we cannot do it (the financial interventions) directly, we’ve to do it through banks.
“And that’s why we say again, people who engage in business should open an account with a bank, run that account and demonstrate that you are in business.

“Once you keep your record and you show evidence that you are in business, banks will always give you loans.
“But in a situation where people do not keep records, and there’s no difference between the money in their pocket ad their working capital, it’ll be difficult for banks to be able to do an examination and given you loan.”

The bears maintained dominance at the end of yesterday’s transactions on the equity sector of the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), following price losses incurred by most highly capitalised stocks, as market capitalisation depreciated further by N94 billion.

Specifically, the All-Share Index (ASI) shed 257.62 absolute points, representing a decline of 0.79 per cent to close at 32,454.03 points. Also, the market capitalisation declined by N94 billion to close at N11.848 trillion.

The downturn was impacted by losses recorded in medium and large capitalised stocks, amongst which are; Dangote Cement, Nigerian Breweries, Unilever Nigeria, FBN Holdings, and Access Bank.

Analysts at Cordros Capital said: “Our outlook for equities in the near to medium term remains conservative, in the absence of a near term one-off positive catalyst; and more so, amidst political uncertainty ahead of the upcoming general elections. However, stable macro-economic fundamentals remain supportive of recovery in the long term.”

However, market breadth closed slightly positive, with 15 gainers versus 14 losers. Diamond Bank recorded the highest price gain of 5.08 per cent to close at N1.24 per share. Cutix gained 4.88 per cent to close at N4.30, while Dangote Sugar appreciated by 4.32 per cent to close at N14.50 per share. Lasaco Assurance rose by 3.23 per cent to close at 32 kobo, while Fidelity Bank gained 2.78 per cent to close at N1.85 per share.

On the other hand, Niger Insurance led the losers’ chart by 8.82 per cent, to close at 31 kobo per share. Mutual Benefits Assurance followed with a decline of 7.14 per cent to close at 26 kobo, while Sovereign Trust Insurance depreciated by 4.35 per cent to close at 22 kobo per share. Jaiz Bank declined by 3.85 per cent to close at 50 kobo, and Aiico Insurance also shed 3.75 per cent to close at 77 kobo per share.

The total volume traded depreciated by 25.93 per cent to 136.73 million shares worth N1.43 billion, traded in 2,801 deals.Transactions in the shares of FCMB Group topped the activity chart with 38.38 million shares valued at N65.72 million. United Bank for Africa (UBA) followed with 20.81 million shares worth N172.54 million, while Fidelity Bank traded 19.18 million shares valued at N35.34 million.Access Bank traded 7.9 million shares valued at N64.15 million, while Zenith Bank transacted 6.71 million shares worth N145.77 million.

AHEAD OF PORT HARCOURT PRIMARIES, NORTH-WEST LEADERS SETTLE ON MAKARFI AS CONSENSUS CANDIDATE.

Political leaders and elder statesmen of the North West under the aegis of the North West Progressives Forum (NWPF) have adopted Sen. Ahmed Makarfi as the region’s consensus candidate going into the PDP Presidential Primaries scheduled to hold on Saturday the 6th of October, 2018.

Giving reasons for the adoption of Sen. Makarfi, spokesman for the group Mal. Isa Saleh Funtua, argued that the North West has the highest number of registered voters in Nigeria, and exerts the most influence on the outcome of presidential elections, so must play an active role in deciding which way the 2019 contest goes. Mal. Saleh Funtua said the NWPF dispassionately considered all the talented NW aspirants hoping to run against Buhari in 2019, and initially managed to narrow it down to four candidates who could not only win the Primaries but more importantly defeat Buhari in the Presidential Election next year.

“We considered Lamido, a fine gentleman with the political sagacity to defeat any challenger. Unfortunately the man has an ongoing EFCC case against him, and you know how brutal these APC people are, so he was a few people’s first choice but we could not risk it”, Alhaji Saleh Funtua said.

“We then looked at Kwankwaso. No doubt he is the most popular NW candidate, and perhaps the only one who can actually defeat APC in the NW, but let us tell ourselves the truth – we did a poll among our brothers and sisters in the South and his candidacy was surprisingly the most resisted. We believe people misunderstood his style of governance when he was governor, and now incorrectly think he is a fundamentalist. Some Yorubas are also unhappy with the vocal positions he took in Ile-Ife during an ethnic clash there. He is a gentleman, but the South has formed a biased opinion against him and will not support him, that is the truth.

“The third aspirant we considered was Governor Tambuwal. It is unfortunate that this gentleman has allowed his candidacy be hijacked by Governor Wike. Yes, he enjoys immunity, but Tambuwal hasn't managed to galvanise widespread political support. Even worse, it appears Wike wants to impose him and the North West cannot allow Wike from his parlour in Port Harcourt decide what is best for us, and for Nigeria. That is not democracy! We think it was very politically naïve of Tambuwal to have allowed this happen. We are not the APC that has godfathers like Tinubu who single-handedly decide what happens within the Party.

“So we have settled for Sen. Makarfi as the man whose candidacy best protects and promotes the interests of the North West and of Nigeria. He was a governor of Kaduna state; he has been a Federal Senator, and he showed his political dexterity when he held the PDP together as its National Caretaker Chairman. Sen. Makarfi is seen by Northerners and Nigerians as a man of integrity and perhaps more importantly he is a unifier. Nigeria has never been this divided before, and just as Sen. Makarfi united Kaduna during his tenure as Governor, we expect him to unify Nigeria once he becomes President.”

The NWPF say they are currently communicating their decision to prominent leaders of the country like Olusegun Obasanjo, Ibrahim Babangida, Abdulsalami Abubakar, Edwin Clark, Tony Anenih, Ango Abdullahi, Goodluck Jonathan, Ayo Adebanjo, TY Danjuma, Bishop Kukah, the Emir of Kano and the Sultan of Sokoto, including groups such as Afenefere, Ohaneze, PANDEF, and ACF.

“This is not a selfish decision we have reached. We believe the 2019 elections will be a contest for the very soul of Nigeria, and that we cannot afford personal ambition to get in the way of rescuing Nigeria. Buhari must go, and even though he is a dark horse, we 100% believe that Sen. Makarfi is the only candidate able to galvanise the national support from North to South needed to remove Buhari in 2019.” Isa Funtua

The issue of domestic violence can not be over-emphasised. A Nigerian woman who was seriously brutalised and wounded allegedly by her own husband after a heated quarrel some days ago, is in pains both emotionally and physically.

According to a report, the man used machete to flog his wife mercilessly after their disagreement, not minding the brutal marks it designed on her body.

The distraught woman contacted the Due Process Advocates, to initiate a legal suit against the alleged abusive husband and possible prosecution by the police as she shared pictures of her body after the assault.

It was also alleged that this is not the first time the husband is maltreating and assaulting his wife.

EBUKA: I am sorry for everything that happened last night. How I spoke to you and how I left you all alone. I thought I should just go to the bar, drink and forget it all; but I just couldn’t drink so I sat there all night.

KENNETH: Ebuka, please suspend whatever you are doing and come to the boardroom for an emergency board meeting. Mr Churchill is here.

EBUKA: Mr Churchill? How! When did he come into the country?

KENNETH: nobody know. Please hurry!

EBUKA: alright, man!

(Ebuka hurriedly tidied up his desk and joined the other directors and Mr Churchill at the boardroom. They all exchanged pleasantries, and Mr Churchill began to address them..)

MR CHURCHILL: Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. It’s good to see you all again. I know you weren’t expecting me. But there was a need for the August visit.

I’d like to start by thanking you all for your dedication and commitment to the company, Your hardwork and everything else you do for the continuous progress of this company.

Erm, now to the purpose of this meeting. Mr Okoye, could you please tell me everything about the renovation you recently carried out in the building. By everything, I mean why it was done, what was done and the total cost of it, please. Thank you!

EBUKA: thank you, Mr Churchill. About two months ago or so, I came to work and one of the cleaners alerted me of a leaking roof in the engine room. On further investigation, I discovered another leakage somewhere else and the wall on that particular room was all damp from rain falling on it…

MR CHURCHILL: sorry to interrupt, where about was this particular leakage?

EBUKA: it was in the main office at the back of the big shelf containing all our legal documents. I took before and after photographs of it.

MR CHURCHILL: perfect! I’ll like to see those later on. Continue.

EBUKA: erm, I also discovered that a lot of rodents had made some of the offices their abode. I felt this posed a risk of losing important documents which would be a shame on a company such as ours.

So I called a directors meeting and discussed total renovation and fumigation of the entire building. I also discussed cost with them.

Majority of the directors agreed except Petra who also disagrees with anything I put forward anyway. A poll was conducted and majority of directors voted in favour of it, so we passed a board resolution and commenced work.

MR CHURCHILL: I must admit that a neat and professional work was done here. I was quite impressed when you sent me the pictures.

But the cost to me appeared a little on the high side. Did you get quotes from different engineers before you chose the Chinese guy?

EBUKA: ermm, it might appear costly but that is because of the materials that were used. I also forgot to mention that he did conduit wiring on the entire building.

I did not physically get quotes from other companies but I looked up the cost of such renovations on the internet and the least was about hundred million. Since Weng agreed to charge thirty million, I felt it was a bargain.

MR CHURCHILL: how did you get to know about Weng. On recommendation?

EBUKA: yes sir. I also went on his website and saw his previous works.

MR CHURCHILL: who recommended Weng to you?

EBUKA: it was a friend.

MR CHURCHILL: would your friend be willing to testify to that in court?

EBUKA: erm, he..he.., he has gone back to Australia where he resides so he may not be able to testify in person.

MR CHURCHILL: but the court can contact him on phone, is that right?

EBUKA: ye–s but I.. I.. would need to contact him and make sure he is happy to testify first.

MR CHURCHILL: sure! Mr Okoye, is there anything else you’d like to tell the board about this contract?

EBUKA: anything such as?

MR CHURCHILL: I wouldn’t know. I’m just asking you.

EBUKA: no. But if I remember anything, I’ll inform the board. For now, this is everything I know about it.

MR CHURCHILL: thanks, Mr Okoye. Petra, can you please tell the board everything you know about the contract. Thank you.

PETRA: erm, first of all, when this matter was presented to the board, I kicked against it, but Mr Okoye in his usual abusive manners called me a bitter single frustrated woman.

The reason I kicked against it was firstly, because such little damage to the building does not require absolute renovation. I told them it was a disproportionate measure.

Secondly, the price was just ridiculous, to be honest. But Mr Okoye was bent on getting it done and immediately.

EBUKA (interrupts) because it is my duty as a director to promote the success of the company!!!

MR CHURCHILL: please let her speak. You’ve had your time. You will still have another time to respond to her. Thank you. Please carry on, Petra. Sorry about that.

PETRA: so on the 30th of March, I went on a date with this Chinese friend of mine whom I had been chatting on facebook with, for over five years now. He called me up one day and told me he was in Nigeria for a contract.

While we were on the date, I started asking him about the contract, so i discovered it was our office he had come to work for, but I never told him I was a staff.

So I asked how he got the contract all the way from China. He told me a friend of his is a director in the company and he gave him the contract. So when I realised that the friend was Ebuka, I told him that his friend must be very kind to have done that for him, but he said it was because he was getting fifteen million naira benefit from it.

EBUKA: lies! Pure lies and cheap blackmail!

MR CHURCHILL: be quiet, please Mr Okoye. You are being rather disruptive now.

Ebuka: no, Mr Churchill! There is a malicious intent behind this! Petra is embittered because I refused to be involved in a romantic relationship with her.

I have evidence to back this up! I have text messages and inappropriate pictures of herself she sent to me!

MR CHURCHILL: I don’t care about your personal and private lives. Honestly, I don’t. I’m just all about the company. Maybe her bitterness as you put it prompted her to investigate you but if her findings are true, then they are still credible!

PETRA: sir, I admit I did ask Ebuka out and I probably sent pictures and I was heartbroken when he got married. But I did not make this up and I also recorded my conversations with Weng. I took pictures with him on our date and I have it all here with me.

MR CHURCHILL: like I said, you are both adults and I am ever so unwilling to know about your private matters. I am most definitely not interested in seeing any images. Clad or unclad. Thanks for the offer.

Petra, could you please play the conversation to the board. Thanks

(Petra played the recorded conversation and also showed them the pictures she took with Weng. At the end of It, there was a very loud silence in the boardroom. Then Mr Churchill broke it)

MR CHURCHILL: alright! Mr Okoye, I am aware that this is not a conclusive evidence to prove that you are guilty of what you have been accused of. Erm, I shall be involving the police to carry out a more extensive and valid investigation into this matter.

In the meantime, I am suspending you temporarily from the company, pending when investigation is concluded.

Just so you are aware, if you are found guilty, you will be made to account to the company every single profit you made from this transaction with interest. Please hand over every property of the company in your possession to Mr Okere. Thank you.

This concludes our meeting.

(Shattered and shivering, Ebuka staggered to his car and made his way to the hospital where his mother who had earlier came from the village, was with his poorly sister. Amara was also with them)

MADAM EBERE: o gini! (What’s the matter?) Why do you look so worn out??

EBUKA: mama I’m fine. Just tired. Nkechi, how was the dialysis?

NKECHI: painful! You look really worried. Is everything fine at work?

EBUKA: yes. Where is the doctor?

AMARACHI: I was waiting for you to come so we can go for the result.

EBUKA: perfect! Let’s go.

NKECHI: you both look good together! Mama, what do you think?

MADAM EBERE: she’s a beautiful girl…

(Ebuka and Amara got to the doctor’s office and he began to explain the result of their blood tests to them)

DOCTOR: erm, I’ll start with your test, Ebuka. Your sister’s blood type is B and yours is A. This means she cannot accept your kidney. This is a first test that Must be passed before moving on to any other thing, unfortunately you didn’t pass it. So you are not a suitable donor for her, I’m afraid.

Luckily however, Amara’s blood type is O, which makes her a universal donor. And when we did the tissue typing or genetic typing test as some people call it, we had about three antigen matches. Which again, is perfect!

But when we did the cross-matching test, sadly, we had a positive cross-match. This means that if Amara donates kidney to Nkechi, her body will attack the new kidney and this can be fatal.

Unfortunately, none of you is a suitable donor for her.

EBUKA: Jesus Christ!

AMARACHI: doctor, can we check if her mum can be a suitable donor?

DOCTOR: I’m afraid she can’t . She told me she is diabetic. That disqualifies her.

AMARACHI: hieeee!?‍?‍

DOCTOR: it’s nothing much to worry about. She can continue on dialysis every two to three days until we are able to find a donor. As you can see, she looks alright.

(Amara and Ebuka went back to where Nkechi and her mum was; she noticed their sad countenance and asked…)

EBUKA: he said we need to do further tests…

(Ebuka got into the doctor’s office and he asked him to take a seat)

DOCTOR: you must be Miss Okoye’ s brother right?

EBUKA: I am. What’s happening to my sister?

DOCTOR: ermm, your sister has advanced chronic kidney disease. She came to the hospital too late.

We can’t emphasise the importance of reporting to your doctor as soon as you notice any changes in your body, enough! We can’t!

EBUKA: what exactly does this mean?

DOCTOR: it means that her kidneys are not functioning properly. Normally, your kidneys filter the blood, to rid it of harmful waste products and excess fluid and then turn them into urine to be passed out of the body.

So because her kidneys are not working, her blood is not being filtered. When she came to the hospital, we noticed that waste products and excess fluid are already building up to a dangerous level. That was why we recommended immediate heomodialysis to help filter those unwanted substances and fluid from her blood.

We have since then done two dialysis that is why she is the way she is now. When she was brought to us, she was really down.

Ebuka: hmmm! So how long would this carry on?

DOCTOR: unfortunately, her kidneys won’t be able to recover. So, she invariably would need kidney transplant. The good news is that she is healthy enough to undergo transplant. But we will keep doing the dialysis until we get her a suitable donor.

EBUKA: doctor, I am a very healthy young man. I have no medical condition whatsoever. So I’ll donate mine.

DOCTOR: erm, being physically healthy does not automatically make you a suitable donor. We would need to carry out three main tests on you. That is after we have checked that you in fact have two kidneys, because some people are born with just one.

In that case, they would not be able to donate their only kidney. Since you’ve stated that you have no health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure or HIV, I will now go ahead and carry out a blood test to determine your blood type and if it will match your sister’s blood.

I will also do two more blood tests called tissue typing and cross matching

If it all comes out good, then we would perform the surgery on you. Otherwise, we continue with the dialysis until we find her a suitable donor.

EBUKA: please do the tests now.

AMARACHI: doctor, I want the tests done on me as well, so that if one doesn’t match, we use the other!

DOCTOR: Alright. I’ll only take blood from both of you today. The results will take about three to five days to come out. But I need to emphasise that she requires another dialysis tomorrow and that would cost a total of eighty thousand naira for the two hours.

EBUKA: okay! Where do I make the payment?

DOCTOR: please pay at the reception. Thanks.

(Ebuka and Amara went back to the ward where Nkechi was lying in bed)

EBUKA: Darling, don’t worry at all. I am your big brother and I will not allow a thing to happen to you. I will give both kidneys if that is what it takes, okay?

NKECHI: thanks dede. I’m not scared I’m just worried about mama. She has been crying since yesterday. Please I want her to come and stay here with me.

EBUKA: I’ll call chijioke to put her in the plane tomorrow and I’ll pick her up from the airport. So do not worry about that.

I will go drop Amara off and come back. What would you like to eat?

NKECHI: drop her off? Both of you should go home! You are almost a new couple. You should spend more time together. I’ll be fine; the nurses are very efficient.

EBUKA: Nkechi, I must bring Funmi back as my wife. She did not do any of the things she was accused of.

(Amara and Ebuka went into the car and drove off)

AMARACHI: please drop me at Wuse2. That’s where my brother’s girlfriend lives. I’ll be staying with her henceforth.

EBUKA: and you are sure you have no idea where Funmi is?

AMARACHI: unfortunately, not. I saw her last in the market and I didn’t remember to ask where she lives.

EBUKA: I saw her online on whatsapp, wrote her, called….all was ignored. I’ve written every apology I know how to. I made voice notes…none got a response.

AMARACHI: she’ll come around.

EBUKA: phewww! Do you know that I have not heard from the Dubai car dealers?

AMARACHI: what!!!

EBUKA: you heard that right. I haven’t. The only money I have on me right now is the money we came back from France with. I’ve paid eighty thousand naira out of it for Nkechi’s dialysis. Brother Chinwendu is currently unemployed. Jesus! I hope God is not mistaking me for the biblical Job!

(Amara came home after spending most of her day at the hospital but didn’t find Funmi at home, so she started ringing her)

We have got the kidney with us now. The nurses will be here at nine on the dot to get you ready for transplant. Okay?

NKECHI: okay doctor. I’m just scared; would i be alright?

DOCTOR: erm, we hope you will. No surgery is risk free and definitely not one as complex as a transplant. We do not guarantee anything but you can count us to do our best.

NKECHI: mummy?

MADAM EBERE: yes, darling

NKECHI: please pray for me.

MADAM EBERE: what else is my duty? I have been talking to God and I know he will never let me down. My only daughter! Mbanu! (Never) nothing will happen to you!

MR CHURCHILL: I’m sure she is a Muslim lady in her early thirties as she was wearing a hijab. She came with her husband and she had a wedding band on. Tall and fair. I’m not good with describing people, so that’s about it

EBUKA: I wish I know this person so I can at least say thank you to her!

MR CHURCHILL: I guess you can also pass it around by doing something nice for someone else when you are in a position to do so. That’s how the world can be a better and less hostile place to live.

Nkechi’s surgery was successful and she was discharged after Mr Churchill paid her hospital bills.
The doctor asked them to come back to hospital today for check up. Also, because they had been demanding to see the donor, the doctor told them that they would have the opportunity to meet with her today.
So they all got ready, picked Amara up from Wuse2 and made their way to the hospital.
EBUKA: you know things happen sometimes to show you the real colours of people. I can’t believe Funmi would so easily fall in love with another man! It’s really sad it breaks me thinking of it
MADAM EBERE: but you did the same if not that Amara didn’t let you. I mean, you were already making wedding plans.
EBUKA: that’s different, mummy! I am a man!
MADAM EBERE: so what? Does owning a penis give you any right owning a vagina doesnt give her?
AMARACHI: there we go! Mama has gone outrightly vulgar to drive home a very important point. Whilst I do not support what Funmi is doing right now, I can also see her points.
She was really treated like she never mattered.
NKECHI: say what you know, Amara! Who treated her like she never mattered. She was married and still running around with men! So lazy, the only meal she can cook is that slimy nasty food of hers! Very unwilling to integrate into the culture she was married in.
Please stop playing this unpaid defence role!
I’m glad she is finally out of this family!

(They got to the hospital and Nkechi had her check up. Then the doctor asked them to come into a designated hall in the building. They all got there and sat down)
DOCTOR: Nkechi, I’m glad your wound is healing quite fast. You have actually made a better recovery than your donor.
She is still on antibiotics and her wounds are still very fresh.
I know you can’t wait to see her, but please be gentle on her. Okay?
NKECHI: I pray I am able to hold myself
DOCTOR: you must. Alright, guys I’ll go and get her.
(The doctor opened the a double door in the hall and Funmi supported on one side by Zain and on the other side by Chika, came through. For a moment, nobody said a word…)

Honestly, when I met her, I wanted to date her. I loved her in that sense. But one day I went swimming with her, a swimming that actually never happened. She poured out her heart to me.
She couldn’t go back to her parents. Her only life was her work life.
The treatment she got from you, she didn’t deserve but thank God for people like this lady right her (points at Amara) she is an angel. She sheltered her, gave her every emotional and financial support she could afford

AMARACHI: ??? when I realised you were going to send her out of the house, I had to find a way to get money from you and paid for a house in Wuse2
I also wasn’t sure if she would retain her job, so i got money out of you to start a shoe business for her.
Although I told her we owned the business jointly, I actually registered it in your name and her name.
I have never used a penny of the profit on myself. I’ve got all the expenses written down. I used some to buy things for Funmi on her birthday and some I used to pay for Nkechi’s dialysis when you couldn’t afford it. I have all the documents with me.
DOCTOR: wow!
NKECHI:???? (kneels in front of Funmi) Funmi, you mean you gave me this life I am living now. Why? Despite everything I did to you? How is this possible?

MADAM BOLA: my message to you all out there is that life is so erratic. The tables do turn quite unexpectedly. Be kind to all!
I also want to use this opportunity to tell you all that I and Adaku are now like mother and daughter.
She is due to have a baby this month and she has asked me to come to Canada and I can’t wait to do everything her mother would have done for her if she were alive.
ROSSY: awwwww! Amazing! Well, we wish her all the best and pray your relationship continues to flourish.
Zain, we didn’t see much of you in the whole story, but you definitely weren’t insignificant. What do you have to say to our readers?
ZAIN: erm, it was very hard for me to kill my initial feelings for Funmi. But I went home and tried to put myself in her husband’s shoes. Then I decided I would help her rebuild her home instead of destroying it.
My advice to everyone out there is, before you sleep with a married man or woman, think of how much damage you may be doing to their home.
If possible, help them rebuild their home. Quit being a home breaker.
It is also my pleasure to announce to you guys that I and Nkechi got engaged last week. We will be getting married in August by the grace of God

ZAIN: I know hehehe. After the hospital reunion, I became the family’s friend and would occasionally visit them…one thing led to another and I just fell in love with her

When Ebuka brought her to the village, I welcomed her and made sure she was comfortable. But deep down, I think I wished she could understand the Igbo language so I can have some deep conversation with her.
To everyone out there, please accept whoever your child chose to spend his life with. Your duty is to give them your blessing and be a mother to both of them. Funmi has been a blessing to my household and I will forever be indebted to her.

You know my initial understanding was that Ebuka needed to be rescued. Nkechi told me he was being abused by the wife, she turned him against his family bla bla. On getting there however, I noticed that it was in fact Funmi who needed rescuing so I quickly changed position.
I’m glad this family has not joined the statistics of dysfunctional families in Nigeria.
Special thanks to my fiance for his understanding and support. Only a guy like Chika can date me haha! It’s not easy knowing that your girlfriend is somewhere playing a woman of loose morals in another man’s house.
That said, I must admit that I did do certain things I wouldn’t be doing anymore this time.

APC National Working Committee endorse results of Lagos governorship primaries, declare Sanwo-Olu winner




 
The Chairman of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) sent to Lagos to observe the governorship primaries, Clement Ebri has endorsed the result of the primaries held in the state yesterday, Tuesday October 2nd. 
 
Ebri had in the evening of Tuesday, cancelled the primaries saying there was no primary election in the state.
However, after much consultation with the National Chairman of the party Adams Oshiomhole in Abuja, Ebri was told to accept the results. This happened after Oshiomhole closed door meeting with President Buhari at the presidential villa in Abuja.
 
Ebri, it was learnt, signed the result of the election won by Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, some hours ago.
 
Sanwo-Olu won the primary with 970,851 votes while Governor Akinwunmi Ambode got 72,901 votes.
 

 

Why Lagosians switched loyalty from Ambode to Sanwoolu.

Ambode with no political clout, no political base was chosen and backed by the entire party structure against a Jimi Agbaje, a heavy weight. Fashola campaigned and toured the state with him, Fashola singled-handedly ran the campaign..I read about the Ikorodu and Mushin rally.

Fashola took him round the state and made sure Jimi Agbaje with the Fed might was defeated. Fashola despite the beef between them, despite the fact that Supo Shasore his candidate lost at the primaries put the party first and ensure Ambode was successful.

Rather than acknowledged his predecessor, he started a campaign of calumny against him, releasing documents to tarnish his image. He went after contractors, abandoned some projects. Party elders intervened oga no listen..He must ruin Fashola.

-Removed Oresanya LAWMA boss, sacked LASAA boss, sacked LAMATA boss, disorganized LASEB, disorganized LAWMA, public works, changed KAI to LAGESC. Oga calm down, he no listen.

No fewer than 23 cows have been killed by thunder in Ekiti State.

NAN reports that the incident, which occurred at Okeowa Eluju, a farmstead in Iloro-Ekiti, Ijero Local Government Area of the state, has caused apprehension among local residents.

While confirming the incident, a Fulani herder and owner of the dead cows, Abdulkadri Kadiri, said he was devastated by the development.

“I went to farm after about six hours heavy downpour on Monday morning, only to discover that 23 of my cows had died.

”After careful observation, I found that there was no trace of bodily injuries on the dead cows. I want to believe it is an act of God since I did not offend or quarrel with anyone,” he said.

Kadiri, however, said he had not experienced such incident in his 35 years of of business.

The Regent of the community, High Chief Joseph Alofe, who also confirmed the incident, described the victim as a gentle and peace loving herder.

CHRISTOPHER Isiguzo, presidential aspirant and two-time vice president at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has been sacked by ThisDay Newspapers, The ICIR has gathered.

Joseph Ushigiale, Managing Editor at ThisDay Newspapers, confirmed this development in a phone interview.

He said the decision was made following various enquiries from media practitioners who sought clarification on his qualifications. The paper thereafter discovered discrepancies in his documents after conducting a review.

“He was asked to explain and then he said he didn’t own those papers,” Ushigiale said. “He denied that the papers belong to him.”

From the management’s findings, when Isiguzo submitted a handwritten application in 2006 when he sought employment at the organisation, he wrote in it that he is an HND holder.

“And we decided that he has been very economical with the truth, because he has misled us in presenting documents that are not substantiated.”

Ushigiale also confirmed Isiguzo submitted documents which claimed he has an HND from the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, and a diploma from Hyles-Anderson College, United States, “and all of them were acquired the same year, which is not possible”.

When he was asked if the case would influence how the paper conducts recruitment exercises in the future and whether it would scrutinise the credentials of current employees, the Managing Editor replied affirmatively.

“We will have to review the entire employment process because it is possible there could be people who still parade fake documents,” he said.

“And, going forward, we will have to engage in maybe verification, or we have to be more strict in reviewing all the documents that are in our possession.”

Prior to his dismissal, Isiguzo worked at the newspaper as South East Bureau Chief.

Meanwhile, in a report published earlier on Tuesday, The ICIR had confirmed allegations that he forged some of his certificates, and stated that ThisDay newspaper issued him a query based on the allegations against him.

When Isiguzo was contacted on Monday, he alleged that Waheed Odusile, president of the NUJ, had paid for online reports against him in order to undermine his campaign.

“What is the interest that all of you have in me?” he had asked. “Waheed paid all of you to come and run me down, right? No, no, no, I know. Listen, listen. Of course, you acknowledged… you are a Yoruba-speaking [man] like him. He paid all of you because he knows he is going to be defeated on Thursday.”

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike on Tuesday held a consultative meeting with PDP Presidential Aspirant and Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar at the Government House Port Harcourt.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFFCC) has concluded plans to arraign Gbenga Makanjuola Peter, the Chief of Staff to Senate President Bukola Saraki, and four others, on allegations of N3.5 billion fraud.

Makanjuola, alongside Kolawole Shittu, Cashier to Senate; Robert Chidozie Mbonu, who is at large; Melrose General Services Limited, and a member of its staff, Oboira Amobi would be arraigned before Justice Baba Kuewumi at the Federal High Court In Ikoyi, Lagos, on Wednesday.

The EFCC is arraigning them on a 13-count charge bothering on financial fraud.

They are accused of transferring N3.5 billion from the Governors' Forum account through Melrose General Services limited.

Kolawole Shittu is accused of making cash payment of $50 million dollars to Makanjuola, without going through a financial institution.

CONSCIOUSLY MEDITATE ON THE WORD.

This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success (Joshua 1:8).


For the Christian, meditating on God’s Word isn’t optional; it’s something you have to do consistently. The Lord, in our opening verse, outlined the importance of meditation and what it’ll produce in your life: all-round prosperity, and durable success. Sadly, some Christians would rather meditate on the challenges they’re facing than on God’s Word, not realising it’s the Word that can put them over and above the challenges of life.

Always meditate on the Word, not on the problems or circumstances. The challenges you face, and the circumstances of life are not real; they’re all subject to change. 2 Corinthians 4:18 says, “…the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.” The Word of God is the unseen reality, the only sure and dependable foundation in life; keep your gaze on the Word only. Refuse to be swayed or moved by circumstances. See nothing else but the Word prevailing in your life, putting you over and above circumstances, and piloting you from glory to glory.

During your quiet moments, think on the Word! From thinking, mutter the Word; and from muttering, roar the Word! These are different levels of meditation. Don’t doze off while meditating; walk around in your room, and utter creative words that’ll shape and align your future with God’s perfect will for your life.

The world is full of negative voices and forces, but you’ve got to counter them by releasing the forces of life from within you; these are your faith-filled confessions. You’ve got to create your fruitful and productive life—your victorious life—with your words. No one but you can do this for you. Meditation is God’s recipe for success; do it consciously.

CONFESSION

My future is secure in Christ; all things are working together for my good, because I love the Lord, and I’m called according to His purpose. Christ in me is my greatest advantage. I’m forever lifted, over and above the depravity and corrupting influences of this world. Blessed be God!

The national leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Ahmed Bola Tinubu, arrived Ward C in Alausa, Lagos State, few moments ago to acknowledge his supporters as the party's governorship primary continues in the state.

It was gathered that Tinubu reportedly dropped some money with the 'Alausa boys' on his arrival. This later degenerated into chaos, and unsettled the ward as they dragged for the cash.

According to reports, a man (seen in the picture) gave his colleague a slap after he asked him for his share of the money..

Meanwhile, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the alleged preferred candidate of APC National Leader, Bola Tinubu won at ward C, Alausa, Ikeja.

Olanrewaju Yahaya, the electoral officer of the ward announced that Sanwo-Olu polled 960 votes ahead of the governor who secured just four votes.

The Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr Idiat Adebule on Tuesday abandoned Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to support Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu in the two-horse race to pick the ticket to represent the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2019 governorship election.



Adebule told newsmen at Ward A and D, in Iba Local Council Development Area of Lagos where she participated in the governorship primary of the APC, that she would endorse the candidate chosen by the party.

“The party has chosen a man and it is that man that I will support and follow,” she said.

NAN reports that when the deputy governor arrived at the ward, some of her aides came with Sanwo-Olu’s posters and banners.

At the ward, accreditation started at about 10.36 am as party electoral officials arrived.

There was no formal announcement of the results as the accreditation was brief.

Many party members at the venue started singing the praises of Sanwo-Olu.

Nigeria’s crude oil export appreciated by 17.38 per cent to N7.308 trillion in the first six months of 2018 from N6.226 trillion recorded in the last six months of 2017, according to data obtained from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

The NBS, in its Second Quarter 2018 Foreign Trade Statistics, stated that first half 2018 crude oil export figure represented an increase of 52.25 per cent compared with an export of N4.8 trillion recorded in the same period of 2017.

Giving a breakdown of Nigeria’s crude oil export on a quarter-on-quarter basis, the NBS report stated that in the first and second quarters of 2018, N3.58 trillion and N3.729 trillion worth of crude oil was exported respectively, compared to N2.97 trillion and N3.255 trillion recorded in the third and fourth quarter of 2017 respectively.

In the second quarter of 2018, the NBS report noted that India emerged the highest importer of Nigeria’s crude oil, with the purchase of N635.25 billion, representing 87.9 per cent of its total import of N722.58 billion from Nigeria.

The Netherlands, Spain, South Africa, United States and Italy purchased Nigerian crude oil valued at N421.28 billion, N372.91 billion, N359.17 billion, N303.7 billion and N214.58 billion respectively.

Others in the top ten category are France, Sweden, Brazil and Thailand which imported Nigeria’s crude oil worth N134.81 billion, N175.03 billion, N139.38 billion and N90.25 billion respectively.

The report showed the total value of Nigeria’s merchandise trade was N6.569 trillion in the second quarter of 2018, which was a decline of 8.89 per cent compared to N7.211 trillion recorded in the first quarter of 2018, while it represented an increase of 14.56 per cent from N5.73 billion recorded in the second quarter of 2017.

The report indicated: “In the reviewing quarter, mineral products accounted for N4.275 trillion or 95.8 per cent of the total export from Nigeria. This category of export was dominated by crude oil exports which contributed N3.728 trillion or 83.5 per cent of total exports.

“The second largest component of export in second quarter 2018 was vegetable products, which recorded N65.45 billion or 1.5 per cent of the total export in the reviewing quarter.

“The value of crude oil exports recorded in second quarter 2018, N3.728 trillion, was 4.2 per cent higher than the value in first quarter 2018, which was N3.579 trillion and 53.7 per cent higher than the value in second quarter 2017, which was N2.425 trillion.

“Other oil products exports in second quarter 2018 stood at N516.32 billion, declining in the reviewing quarter by 3.6 per cent compared to N536.68 billion from first quarter 2018, and a 0.8 per cent growth from the value recorded in the second quarter of 2017, which was N512.41 billion.”

The report noted that Nigeria exported most products to Europe, Asia and Africa, accounting for N1.849 trillion or 41.4 per cent, N1.284 trillion or 28.8 per cent and 639.3 or 14.3 per cent respectively.

However, the report added that within Africa, Nigeria exported goods valued at N265.1 billion to ECOWAS member states representing 41.5 per cent of the total export trade to Africa.

Market prospect

There are indications that the oil market would continue to be stable in the coming months, thus ensuring high revenue to Nigeria and other exporters, especially as the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), has painted a bright prospect in its latest World Oil Outlook (WOO).

In launching the WOO, OPEC Secretary General, Mohammad SanusiBarkindo, said the past year had been a historic one for the organisation, as well as the global oil industry, with the historic ‘Declaration of Cooperation,’ “helping accelerate the return of balance to the global oil market, bringing more optimism to the industry, which in turn, has had a positive effect in the global economy and trade worldwide.”
He added: “the importance of these recent developments, specifically in terms of helping achieve sustainable market stability, is clearly vital across all timeframes,” which is evidenced in the analysis provided in the WOO 2018.

The Outlook has it that: “All forms of energies will be required in the future; it is not about choosing one form of energy over another. Oil is expected to remain the fuel with the largest share in the energy mix throughout the forecast period to 2040. Total primary energy is set to expand by a robust 33 per cent between 2015 and 2040, driven predominantly by Developing countries, which see almost 95 per cent of the overall energy demand growth.

“Natural gas witnesses the largest demand growth in absolute terms, and renewables the largest growth in percentage terms. Long-term oil demand has been revised upward for the second consecutive year, with total demand at over 111.7 mb/d in 2040. Demand growth is driven by non-OECD regions, which see a huge increase of around 23 mb/d to 2040.

“There is no expectation for peak oil demand over the forecast period to 2040. Long-term demand growth comes mainly from the petrochemicals (4.5 mb/d), road transportation (4.1 mb/d) and aviation (2.7 mb/d) sectors; the total vehicle fleet – including passenger and commercial vehicles – is projected to increase to around 2.4 billion in 2040.

“The majority of the growth continues to be for conventional vehicles, but the long-term share of electric vehicles in the total fleet is projected to expand and reach a level of around 13 per cent in 2040, supported by falling battery costs and policy support. Non-OPEC liquids supply is forecast to increase by more than 9 mb/d between 2017 and 2027, with the major driver being US tight oil, but beyond this period non-OPEC supply is set to decline by around 4 mb/d.

“The demand for OPEC crude is projected to increase to around 40 mb/d in 2040, up from 32 mb/d in 2018. The share of OPEC crude in the global oil supply is estimated to increase from 34per cent in 2017 to 36 per cent in 2040. Global refinery additions are projected mainly in developing regions, led by the Asia-Pacific and the Middle East, but also Africa and Latin America.

Excess revenue

Nigeria 2018 was benchmarked at $51 per barrel and 2.3 million barrels per day. At the current market price, hovering at between $80 and $83 per barrel, the nation generates excess revenue of $32 per barrel of oil exported.

Meanwhile, experts, including Director General, Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry,Mr.Muda Yusuf, have called judicious deployment of resources in order to enable the nation fully reap the gains of the current stability in the global oil market.

Earlier today, supporters of governor Akinwunmi Ambode, embarked on a peaceful demonstration in front of the residence of the All Progressives Congress (APC) national leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu in Bourdillon, Ikoyi area of the state. 

The supporters were armed with placards as they showed their support for governor Ambode following the political rift between him and his godfather, Tinubu.

While the peaceful solidarity rally was going on, Tinubu's residence was under tight security as policemen stood at the gate and across the road to control the situation. 

The quest of Akinwunmi Ambode to win a second term as Governor of Lagos State now looks more daunting than ever, following the emergence of evidence that Bola Tinubu, has endorsed Jide Sanwonolu, who served as a commissioner in the Babatunde Fashola regime and is currently the Managing Director of Lagos State Property Development Corporation (LSPDC).

Meanwhile, governor Ambode has restated his commitment to his political family, the All Progressives Congress (APC).

A man has been arrested for hacking his own wife after a disagreement.

The man allegedly picked up a cutlass and attacked his wife with it following the heated argument at their home in Korhogo, Cocody in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. The incident happened on Saturday September, 29, 2018.

The man was later apprehended by neighbours and handed over to the police.

The scenario playing out in Lagos State is quite interesting. Tinubu has decided to tell Ambode that without him, he won’t come back as Governor. This is pure fallacy. 

Tinubu will certainly eat his humble pie soon. One, he should know he is not God and would never be allowed to usurp God’s authority. I’m happy Ambode dared him. I won’t expect Ambode to bow down and worship him as God.

 I believe Tinubu’s political dynasty is about to explode. With or without him, Ambode will win the second term. Ambode has impressed Lagosians and I’m sure they won’t disappoint him come 2019. He has tried his best to satisfy the yearnings of the people and he must be returned as Governor. On our own part, we shall fully work with the Governor to actualize his second term dream. 

Tinubu can’t stop Ambode. As an organization keen on good governance and effective leadership, we have given Ambode a pass mark and we deem him as the most qualified candidate to occupy the government house for another four years. Akinkuotu tasks energy sector on local production of Jet A1

AS aviation fuel continues to gulps over 30% of operational cost of airlines in the country, Managing Director of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) Capt. Fola Akinkuotu has charged the oil and gas sector in Nigeria to consider critically the production of the product in line with the Nigerian Content Development initiative of the Buhari administration.


Akinkuotu who was a guest speaker at the annual Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) forum organized by PSRG-Richardson Oil and Gas which held at Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos said the call became imperative given the high cost of Jet A1 (aviation fuel) in Nigeria.

He said apart from cost, the supply of the product is sometimes epileptic, resulting in flight disruptions, stressing that the production of Jet A1 in Nigeria would regularize supply, bring about reduced cost which would also translate into lower air fares by airlines.

The NAMA boss who delivered a paper on the topic “Aviation Safety in Nigeria – Challenges, Issues and Solutions” lamented the high cost of aircraft maintenance which he described as “atrocious, largely because these costs are domesticated in dollars.” He revealed however that effort was being made by the federal government to set up an MRO (Maintenance, Repairs and Operations) facility “as part of strategic plans to reduce capital flight, lower the times aircraft leave the country for repairs and lower the cost of maintenance.”


On the state of air safety in Nigeria, Akinkuotu said “the recent pronouncement by the U.S Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) that Nigeria’s air carriers’ operations are in compliance with the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) standards is good news that rekindles hope in the sector,” adding that “the aviation sector in Nigeria today is all together safe as accidents have remained at zero level for six consecutive years with serious or reportable incidents at acceptable levels” This according to him does not presuppose there are no challenges and issues in the sector which deserve mention and require adequate attention.

Capt. Akinkuotu noted that as an airspace manager, NAMA has embarked on the modernization of airspace infrastructure through the Installation of Instrument Landing System (ILS), Distance Measuring Equipment (DME), Doppler Very High Frequency Omnidirectional radio Range (DVOR) and Wide Area Multi-Lateration (WAM) for low flying aircraft surveillance and control, even as he revealed that Installation of ILS/DME and DVOR/DME is ongoing in 12 airport locations while CAT III ILS will be completed in Abuja and Lagos before the end of the year.

Air Peace explains AOG of B777, urges government to stop multiple designations to protect local airlines

GROWING concerns over Air Peace’s acquired Boeing 777-200/300ER being Aircraft on Ground (AOG)  has led the airline’s Chairman, Chief Allen Onyema to clarify the true reason why the aircraft are yet to be put to use.

Onyema also decried federal government’s multiple designation policy stating that no country opens its flanks for its economy to be raped by those who do not provide jobs or add to the country’s economy.

Onyema who addressed newsmen at the weekend explained that the concerns were coming from people who had moribund ideas on how international permits are gotten to commence operations.

According to him, things have changed from just submitting the name of aircraft to be used as most destination Civil Aviation Authority require that the operator present the particular aircraft, its tail number and its documentation to show ownership or that there is a lease.

Onyema said,”When you are given international destinations, it is no longer the way it was before. When they give you these destinations you now apply to the other countries. Those countries, in fact China, before you can say what kind of aircraft you want to use (777,747) no plane just apply. These days it is not so. These days, you must present that aircraft with its tail number, not just any aircraft, they will see your document that you own the aircraft or you have dry leased it. “

“They will see payment and everything and see the number, the thing is attached to your application. It’s not ‘this is the aircraft I will be using’ as it used to happen before. So some of those experts are not current about what is happening.”

He derided so-called experts who misled the public over the true state of things and using their moribund ideas to explain current trends .

“They don’t know, you apply to these countries, they need to see your aircraft, my brothers to buy an airplane is not same as buying a car or bicycle. So many things go into it. You get these aircraft, you send them to maintenance facilities they will inspect, before you even buy inspections will go on for several months. When you finally buy you push them to maintenance facilities for maintenance programs. Remember wide body planes are not like these smaller jets, or 737. 737 the maintenance facilities are all over the place, but 777 there are a few places, you buy and queue in for your slot. Remember if these countries allowed us not to buy before giving us permit, we didn’t need to buy and park, because you will park.”

“The process are ongoing, but the plane will be in your country waiting, if you wait for so long you go and do another maintenance and bring it back again. That is what is happening, not that we went out to buy an aircraft we are not operating when people say they have given us routes to fly and we are not making use of them. That is not so, we’ve applied and the processes to fly into these countries are ongoing. So what we require is that government should help us fast track by playing the aero politics for the airlines. The planes are on ground not because we want if so but because those permits have not been obtained yet.”

On the multiple designation, Onyema explained that routes given to airlines be reduced so they partner with a Nigerian carrier to take them to their destination instead of opening the air space to all.

He said, “The gulf carriers of Qatar ,Oman, Dubai and others  they were ravaging America and the airlines cried out and reminded the government of America that they are providing the jobs. ‘Why all these carriers that are being subsidized will come here and be competing with us, it’s not fair,’ and the government reduced their frequency.”

“Ethiopia is flying into five destinations what stops Nigeria from telling them to fly from just two. If you want to go to Kano Azman and Max Air are there. That is how to grow this industry. If you want to go to Lagos Aero , Arik, Air each we are all there. “

“No country allows its flanks open in the name of open skies, open skies is on paper. America signed every aviation document under the sun, Britain signed all the aviation documents. What the Europeans are doing is use the TCO to prevent you. There are so many ways they bring things to the fore to  frustrate you from coming in. Why are we leaving our flanks open in the name of big brother by allowing people like Ethiopia, we don’t even fly to Ethiopia, no airline flies to Ethiopia, yet we are celebrating them.”

The President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki; and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, were on Monday conspicuously absent at a parade organised to commemorate Nigeria’s 58th independence anniversary.

The strictly military event held at the Eagles Square, Abuja, was attended by President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo.


Recall that Saraki and Dogara recently defected from the ruling All Progressives Congress to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party.

Also in attendance at the parade was the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo was also absent at the event attended by two former military leaders: Gen. Yakubu Gowon (retd.) and Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd.).


On arrival at the venue, Buhari first took the national salute before moving to inspect the parade in a motorcade.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) says it made a trade surplus of N18.12 billion in the month of May, higher than N17.16 billion in April 2018.

The Corporation made the disclosure in a statement signed by its Spokesman, Mr Ndu Ughamadu in Abuja on Monday.

He said details of the transactions was published in the corporation’s May 2018 edition of the Monthly Financial and Operations Reports. He noted that the report indicated that the additional monthly trade surplus of N0.96bn was mainly due to increased performance of some of the corporation’s subsidiaries. 

He named the subsidiaries to include the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC), Petroleum Products Marketing Company (PPMC), Nigerian Pipelines and Storage Company (NPSC) and Marine Logistics. “Within the period, the NNPC Group performance was mainly impacted by NPDC’s performance which recorded a favorable variance of N18 billion due to increase in revenue with parallel decrease in expenses. “This resulted in N20.93billion net increase in the upstream gas and power surplus,’’ he said He added that the report indicated that the increase in performance was bolstered by relatively high production volumes of 1.97 million barrels per day in April, which was sold in May, thereby reducing cost per unit. 

Under the national crude oil and natural gas production, lifting and utilisation segment, Ughamdu said the report noted that 58.96 million barrels of crude oil and condensate were produced in the month of April. This, he said, represented an average daily production of 1.97 million barrels. A breakdown of the production figure indicated that Joint Ventures (JV) and Production Sharing Contracts (PSC) contributed about 32.82 per cent and 41.77 per cent, while Alternative Financing (AF), NPDC and Independent producers accounted for 14.68 per cent, 7.65 per cent and 3.08 per cent. 

Ughamdu noted that the report also indicated that the NPDC cumulative production from all fields within the period amounted to 47,759,229 barrels of crude oil which translated to an average daily production of 120, 909 barrels per day. On national gas production, the report stated highlighted that 231.59 Billion Cubic feet (BCF) of natural gas was produced in the months of May, translating to an average daily production of 7,785.01 Million Standard Cubic Feet per day (MMSCF/D).

Students of the department of Science Laboratory and Technology [SLT] of the school of Evening Studies, Auchi polytechnic in Edo state, reportedly fought a lecturer for allegedly injuring a female student of the department.

According to reports, the incident happened on Saturday, 29th September, 2018. 

The Ecology lecturer was said to have accompanied his fellow colleague to assist in a practical course before the incident.

During an interview with a student of the department, One Miss Blessing , she said the lecturer came furiously to the class. 

" He gave an order for the students that were unseated to wait outside while the practical would be on. At this time he backed the door to hit my course mate, Mrs. Dele Miracle, a pregnant woman. Although, we begged, after a little expression of anger", Miss Blessing said. 

It was gathered that after some time, the lecturer went and parked his car somewhere outside the department, and came back to revenge the action of the students for backing the door against Mrs Dele. 

Entering angrily into the class, the lecturer was alleged to have forcefully backed the door against another female student. At this time, he inflicted injuries on her face, leaving her bleeding. This called for the reaction of the students. 

According to reports, the Ecology Lecturer later fled, after collecting some blows from the angry students.

A suspected baby factory in Port Harcourt belonging to a Pastor identified as Glory Raphael which was raided by operatives of the Rivers State Police Command, led to the arrest of the Pastor and 16 pregnant women. 

Three other persons helping the cleric to run the baby factory were also arrested during the raid. Confirming the arrest of the suspects, the State Commissioner of Police, Zaki Ahmed told newsmen that the Pastor engaged in child trafficking in the guise of operating a legal business.

Parading the suspects alongside 39 suspected armed robbers, kidnappers and cultists in Port Harcourt, the Police Boss said; 

“Men of the Criminal intelligence and Investigation Department in a sting operation on Friday stormed the premises of one Gloria Raphael, who is the General Overseer of Mount Sinai Ministry at Rukpokwu. She is into the business of child trafficking.

“Sixteen pregnant women awaiting delivery and onward sale of the children to the waiting buyers were arrested. One of them by name Chinyere Nweke had labour yesterday (Friday) and was rushed to the police clinic where she gave birth to a baby girl,” Ahmed said.

Flood has taken over Amasoma community in Bayelsa state, where the Niger Delta University, NDU, is located. 

According to Voke Akpata, a Medical student of the University, who spoke with Asbgistng, the flood started very little about two weeks ago but has become worse just this week.

She said:

"This is my school o, NDU, this whole flooding issue started about two weeks ago, and have gotten worse this week that students are now using canoes to go for lectures and back to their respective houses."

A video she sent to aAsbGist Nigeria further revealed the condition of the students. Students were seen using canoes and some of them saying "This is my lodge, flood".

No fewer than 150,000 persons have been displaced by the flood in Bayelsa, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on Sunday, said.

An Apostolic Faith Mission pastor got more than he bargained for after he was caught pants down with a female church member who is said to be married, while having sex inside the bush few days ago. 

The pastor identified as Joseph Ponda who hails from Tynwald in Dzivarasekwa, Zimbabwe, was allegedly caught pants down with an unidentified member of his church and was assaulted by passersby who caught him in the act.

In a viral video posted online, the pastor who was beaten and humiliated - was made to run in his underwear along with the female church member after being caught.

According to reports, the church is set to demote the pastor if they find the allegations levied against him to be true.

This medical oath of secrecy has now been flouted by some medical personnel at the Lagos state owned Gbagada General Hospital and is now being used as a political weapon by the Lagos state Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode against the aspiration of Mr. Babajide Sanwo Olu a Governorship aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State.

On Sunday, September 30, 2018 the Lagos state Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode while addressing a press conference at the Lagos house Alausa, took a swipe at Mr. Sanwo-Olu by saying “He doesn’t have the competence to do what he is being propelled to do. This is somebody that has gone for rehabilitation before. The records are there at the Gbagada General Hospital,”. This simply means the state Governor would have either used his position as the Governor to access Mr. Sanwo-Olu medical records or some medical staff at the Gbagada hospital made such records available to the Governor even without requesting for it for political reasons. Irrespective of how the Governor got to know about this medical history, it shows the Gbagada General Hospital committed an infraction by making such information public without the approval of the patient while the decision of the Governor to make such a political point is another low for public communication by elected officers in the country.

I am indifferent to the existing political situation in the state but all I’m saying is that the right of every patient must be respected and protected from third party as contained in the Hippocratic Oath that was sworn to by medical personnel as the release of such information without the patients approval could be damaging. As for the Lagos state Governor, he has committed an infraction that belittle his office.

The Lagos primary earlier scheduled to hold today, Monday, October 1, 2018, was shifted to Tuesday, October 2, 2018.

“The National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has rescheduled governorship primaries in the Lagos, Enugu and Adamawa states,” Mr Nabena said.

The ruling party spokesman said the shift in Enugu and Adamawa was because of the new mode of primaries adopted by both states.

Eyes Of Lagos reports gathered that , The entire stretch of Ikorodu road from Anthony to Maryland and other adjoining community roads were on lockdown earlier today, Sunday, September 30, 2018, as political supporters and loyalists of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode under the aegis of Ambode Mandate Support Group (AMSG) staged a political rally in the axis.

The supporters who came out in their hundreds, converged on the premises of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) in Maryland, Lagos Mainland, and marched through Ikorodu Road to Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park in Ojota, where they were joined by others who came from other communities on the Lagos Mainland.

At the gathering, the leaders of the group took turns to speak to the participants in the rally urging them to ensure Ambode emerge victorious in the primary in their respective wards.

Speaking at the rally, Director General of the Ambode Mandate Support Group (AMSG), Hon Hakeem Sulaimon, particularly declared no confidence in the State Executive of APC led by Tunde Balogun for openly exhibiting bias towards the Governor, saying the chairman committed faux pas when he participated at briefing where another governorship aspirant was purportedly endorsed by party leaders.

While tracing the root of the problem which the Governor had with some party leaders, Sulaimon said it was unfortunate that the same character who informed the Governor not to relate with party leaders immediately after the election was now the one playing on the intelligence of members not to support the Governor for re-election.



In addition, the rally was joined by popular Fuji musician, Abass Akande Obesere who sang praises of the Governor and took time to dish out folk music to the delight of the onlookers.

Speaking at the rally, a member of the Ambode Mandate Support Group (AMSG), Yusuf Azeez told InsideMainland that; “we are solidly behind our man Ambode. He is the going nowhere and would rule Lagos for another four years.

“The party leaders who are after going against his candidacy or want him to step down cannot influence all of us. We have taken a decision and we are ready to stand by it.”

Motorist plying the Ojota end of Ikorodu road affected by the traffic gridlock caused by the rally condemned the exercise by the loyalists saying it was ill-conceived without the input of traffic managers who would have ensured free flow of traffic in the area.





Eyes Of Lagos gathered that, According to a commercial bus driver who gave his name as Agbana, the rally should have held in Ikoyi or an area where the leaders of the party would be directly affected. “Why did they come down here? Did they remember to hold a rally when there was fire at Olusosun for several days or when we complained of the bad portion on Ikorodu road?

“They should have visited Ikoyi, VGC, Lekki and other posh areas where the party leaders can also feel the effect of the rally.”

A resident of Ogudu, Simbiat Akinade while commenting said that “the group should have invited LASTMA guys to help in the rally. That would have gone a long way in ensure free flow of traffic than allowing innocent citizens spend productive time in traffic.”

With the recent takeover of Skye Bank Plc by Polaris Bank, following the inability of the owners of the bank to shore up the capital of the distressed bank, shareholders are now at the risk of losing an estimated N10.69 billion, being the value of the shareholders’ fund.

The shareholders, who spoke in an interview with The Guardian, amid lamentations, noted that while retail investors were still grappling with N83 billion loss of investment occasioned by the sale of the three nationalised banks- Keystone Bank Limited; Mainstreet Bank; and Enterprise Bank, they are currently faced with another dilemma arising from the sale of the Skye Bank.

According to them, one of the reasons why retail investors had shown apathy to the Nigerian stock market since the meltdown in 2009, was because of the issue of nationalised banks.

They bemoaned the failure of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to protect the interest of investors, noting that this is a disincentive to market growth.

The shareholders also blamed the former directors of the banks on the current predicaments, insisting that they fail to carry them along even when it became obvious that the bank needed to be recapitalised.

For instance, the Former Secretary General of the Independent Shareholders Association of Nigeria, Adebayo Adeleke, lamented that since Skye Bank is no more in existence, it means the N10.69 billion shareholders’ fund has also gone.

He pointed out that capital market regulators may find it difficult to attract more investment with the loss of such huge amount of money.

“The regulators have specific responsibilities giving to them by the act that establishes them, CBN protects the interest of the depositors, NDIC insures the securities of the deposit, AMCON is the midwife, to get the get the banking industry out of this toxic asset. 

“We have SEC, whose statutory duty is to protect the interest of the investors.


While all these regulators have played their part, you will find out that it is only SEC that did not do anything at all.

“Unfortunately, Skye Bank had its own problem, but the management put in place by CBN in the past two years, with no annual report, no yearly general meeting, should explain at what point they really asked shareholders to recapitalise the bank and the shareholders said no,” he queried. 

The President, Proactive Shareholders Association, Taiwo Oderinde, said: “The issue of Skye Bank’s takeover is not acceptable by our group at all.

It is a daylight robbery and a rape on our capital market and investment. The management and Board of Directors have been managing the bank for two years and they cannot come and be talking of takeover of our bank. God willing, we will challenge it in court.”

The Founder of Noble Shareholders Association, Gbadebo Olatokunbo, said: “These are the things that are discouraging local investors.

CBN should hold the directors of the bank responsible and should not allow shareholders to suffer the way they did when the three banks were nationalised.

“It is a big disappointment and I am just going through my holdings to know how much I have there. The directors of the bank must be made to pay for this.”

All first term governors of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, emerged victorious in the party primaries held, yesterday, in Enugu, Akwa Ibom, Abia, Rivers, Delta and Cross River states. The primaries were held in fairly peaceful circumstances with notable exception in Oyo and Borno states where parallel primaries were held along factional lines. The Benue State primary was yet to commence at press time yesterday, but all other aspirants with the exception of Mr. John Tondu, a former commissioner in the Gabriel Suswam administration had at press time stepped down for Governor Samuel Ortom.

RIVERS 

Governor Nyesom Wike was the only aspirant at the Rivers State primary of the party that was also attended by the national chairman of the party, Prince Uche Secondus at the primary election held at the Sharks Stadium, Port-Harcourt. Wike was the only aspirant on the ballot. Chief Returning Officer for the Rivers State PDP Governorship Primary, Mr Chuma Chinye announced that the governor polled 3, 345 delegate votes from the 23 local government areas of the state. The voting   process was   kick-started by National PDP Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, who was a statutory delegate from Andoni Local Government Area. Governor Wike then voted, followed by other statutory delegates before they were joined by other delegates in alphabetical order.

ENUGU 

Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, yesterday, emerged unopposed as the governorship candidate of the PDP for Enugu State in next year’s governorship election. He was the sole aspirant at the governorship election where he was voted for by over 2,000 delegates that was presided over by the five-man electoral committee led by Senator Zik Ambuno. Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, while introducing Ugwuanyi, noted that in the past 21 years of Enugu political history, it was the first time a sole aspirant contested the party’s position. 

DELTA 

Governor Ifeanyi  Okowa emerged as the governorship standard-bearer through a process of affirmation at the primary election held at the Cenotaph, Asaba. Among those present were former Governor James Ibori, his deputy, Chief Benjamin Elue and other top PDP leaders. Announcing the result of the primaries in which Okowa was the sole aspirant, Chairman of the Governorship Primary Committee, Mrs. Uzor Nwandu, said he polled 3, 252 of the 3, 278 delegates’ votes while 26 were voided. Okowa  immediately announced the state Deputy Governor, Mr. Kingsley Otuaro as his running mate.

EBONYI 

Governor David Umahi, emerged the candidate of the PDP for Ebonyi State following a primary election in which he was the only aspirant. Declaring Governor Umahi winner and the candidate of PDP for Ebonyi State governorship election, the Chairman of the panel, Senator Joy Emodi said Governor Umahi pulled a total of 1, 988 votes. Dr. Emodi said the decision to go into normal election despite the fact that Governor Umahi was the sole aspirant for the governorship position, was based on the party’s prescription for internal democracy which enables the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to monitor the proceedings.

ABIA 

Governor Okezie Ikpeazu emerged as candidate of the party at the primary after delegates from the 17 council areas of the state renewed their mandate with a total of 1, 991 votes. Although Ikpeazu had no challenger, the party still went through all the electoral process of accreditation, voting, sorting, counting and declaration. Declaring Governor Ikpeazu winner of the PDP primaries, the Chief Returning Officer, High Chief Raymond Dokpesi announced that a total of 2, 207 delegates were accredited for the election with 23 of the votes recorded as invalid. 

OGUN

Adebutu , Shittu emerge separate governorship candidates   The PDP in Ogun State, yesterday, performed rival primaries and elected  two different candidates for the 2019 governorship election in the state. The group loyal to Senator Buruji Kashamu with Bayo Dayo as chairman, held its primary at the PDP State Secretariat on IBB Boulevard, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta and elected Adeleke Shittu from Ijebu-Igbo, in Ijebu-North Local Government Area of the state as candidate. The primary was observed by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). 

OYO 

The PDP governorship primaries in Oyo State was marked with factional congresses held at Adamsingba Stadium and Liberty Stadium, both in Ibadan. Unlike the huge turnouts that characterised such meetings in the past, there was a poor turnout of delegates, yesterday. When Vanguard got to the venue of the primaries, unlike in the past, when the whole stadium would be filled to the brim, there was a scanty crowd as some aggrieved party members were seen leaving the stadium. One of the governorship aspirants, Senator Ayo Adeseun warned the national leadership of the party to avoid another electoral defeat in the state by allowing all the aspirants to have access to the original delegate list for the primary election. While dismissing the purported primary election held at the Liberty Stadium yesterday as a huge joke and unacceptable, he said it was a complete absurdity to hide a delegate list from a prominent contestant like him. Ishaku emerges in Taraba Governor Darius Ishaku emerged the candidate of the PDP at the Taraba State PDP State primary conducted in Jalingo, the state capital yesterday. He was unopposed. Reacting to his emergence, he promised to sustain his track record of development in the state. 

ADAMAWA

Ahead of the primary in Adamawa State yesterday, two of the leading aspirants, Dr. Umar Ardo and former deputy governor of the state, Sa’ad M.C Tahir announced their withdrawal from the contest. The duo lamented that under such circumstances,they rather maintain their political and personal integrity by withdrawing from the governorship race.

BORNO

The PDP held parallel gubernatorial primaries in electing their candidate for the forthcoming 2019 general elections. One of the factions with Usman Baderi as chairman conducted their primary at the new PDP secretariat along Circulur Road, Maiduguri with Mohammed Wakil, a former minister of Works (State) and Alhaji Bukar Kyari as the major aspirants. The other faction which has Alhaji Zanna Gadama as chairman held its own primary at the Old PDP secretariat around Leventis General Area of the metropolis.

NIGER

THE CHRIST-ENVIRONMENT.

Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances (Colossians 2:20).

The Apostle Paul had come to a climactic point in his discussion with the Christians in Colossae in the verse above. Notice again his communication: “…if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances.” Amazing and profound: the Christian doesn’t live in this world; in this natural plane of life! Hallelujah!

You’re therefore not supposed to be affected, ruled or influenced by the rudiments of this world; the vagaries of life and nature can’t, and shouldn’t, impact on you because you’re from another plane; a different environment; the Christ-environment.

In the Old Testament, after the children of Israel left Egypt and journeyed through the desert, they carried their own atmosphere with them. Even though they were in the desert, they were unaffected, unblemished, and untainted by the severity and debilitating effects of the desert. During the day, they had a cloud as their covering against the scorching sun, and at night, there was a pillar of fire shielding them from the biting cold. They were in a different environment. How glorious!

Being born again, you have something far more glorious: you’re in “Christ.” Christ is a place, an environment. You were born into the environment called Christ, when you were born again. In that environment, life is different; everything is pure and perfect; there’s no failure, weakness, defeat, sickness, disease, poverty or any of the negativities of life! All you have is glory, righteousness, life and immortality, joy, health, peace, prosperity, and abundance!

The Christ-environment is the kingdom of heaven. You have absolute mastery over circumstances; you’re never subject to the principles of this world, because you really don’t live in this world. This is the understanding that the Spirit, through the Apostle Paul, is passing to us in our theme verse. You live “in,” and from, heaven. Therefore, set your focus on things above; things that are pertinent to the heavenly realm to which you belong, and from which you play. Hallelujah!

PRAYER

Dear heavenly Father, I thank you for making me a citizen of heaven, living by heavenly principles. I live in the Christ-environment, where all I have and experience are glory, righteousness, life and immortality, joy, health, peace, prosperity, and abundance, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Disoriented presidential aide bites Udoedeghe’s hand to escape !

The Akwa Ibom State APC Governorship primary opened on Sunday on a bloody note following an exchange of blows between Senator J.J. Udoedeghe and Senator Ita Enang at the party’s Secretariat along Ikot Ekpene road in Uyo.

Trouble started when officials and materials meant for the primary arrived the Akwa Ibom International Airport, AKIA, Uyo, on board a chartered flight allegedly owned by APC National Leader, Senator Bola Tinubu. The materials were from the airport moved to the party secretariat in Uyo, accompanied by party chieftains and security forces.

The materials had barely arrived the party office when Senator Ita Enang in connivance with Senator Godswill Akpabio, started making moves to hijack materials, a move that was vehemently resisted by Udoedeghe. An angry Enang was alleged to have pushed Udoedeghe in the process, a move that sparked tension forcing Udoedeghe to warn the presidential aide against any attempt to rig the process.

Moves by Ita Enang to divert the materials through the back door infuriated Udoedeghe who allegedly slapped Enang. This was followed with severe punches on the Ibiono born Senator. In disorientation, Enang who was battling to escape the cold hands of hot blows, held Udoedeghe’s hands and bit it before fleeing to escape.
Unknown to Ita Enang, youth loyal to Udoedgehe had before now deflated Enang’s car, making his attempt to escape from the party office difficult. It took spirited effort by security agents in the convoy of the Managing Director of the NDDC, Nsima Ekere, to whisk Enang to safety.

Speaking to newsmen, Senator Udoedeghe who is one of the Governorship aspirant accused Ita Enang of being a betrayer. He insisted that he will resist any attempt to rig the primary, harping that all aspirants be allowed to go to the field to test their popularity as anything short of that will be unacceptable to him.
“They say they are popular. They have been boasting how they will use money to win but I have the people. Why come to the party secretariat with thugs using bullet proof vests if you are popular? Let’s go to the field and allow the people decide who they want”, he said.

Efforts to get the reaction of Ita Enang proved abortive. His media aide, Essien Inyang also declined comments when asked of the incidence by reporters. Unconfirmed reports say Ita Enang was receiving medical attention at an undisclosed medical facility. The state APC publicity secretary, Mr Nkereuwem Enyongekere did not also pick his calls or responded to text messages sent to his phone on the matter.

THE organised labour has suspended the ongoing strike with effect from today, Sunday.



National President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Ayuba Wabba announced this while briefing journalists at the Labour House Abuja. Wabba said that the organised labour has gotten firm commitment from the government that the Tripartite Committee of the Minimum Wage Committee reconvenes on October 4. Details later.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has disqualified popular Nollywood actor, Kenneth Okonkwo from contesting for Enugu governorship election in 2019 following his inability to purchase the nomination and expression of interest forms. 

Igbere TV gathered that Kenneth Okonkwo has been begging his party members to help him out but all to no avail. 

According to a source close to the popular actor, 

“Whathappened was that he was hoping to get a waiver but we told him that the Party does not wave fees. Not just in APC but in every party you go, all the aspirants are expected to come up with their money to fund their nomination forms."

" Those that don’t want to come out themselves will tell you a group bought for them. In this case, Kenneth did not purchase his form by the deadline talk more of coming for screening..., " the source said. 

The All Progressives Congress Party had set their nomination forms fees for Governorship aspirants at N22m.

Last Thursday, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, declared Gboyega Oyetola of the APC as the winner of the governorship election in Osun State.


Oyetola polled a total of 255,505 votes after the collation of the results of the supplementary election in seven polling units across four local governments, while PDP's Ademola Adeleke polled a total of 255,023 votes to come second.



But at the initial election which held last Saturday, Davido's uncle scored the highest number of votes, beating Oyetola with 353 votes but INEC declared the election inconclusive and ordered a rerun because the number of cancelled votes in the seven polling units was far higher than the margin by which Adeleke beat Oyetola. 



Following this supplementary votes on Thursday, Oyetola overtook and beat Adeleke with a total margin of 482 votes.



Reacting to the outcome of the supplementary election, Davido wrote: 'God knows best ! Best believe he will come thru soon,' while replying to a Twitter user.

A fake military officer who has been parading himself as colonel for over two years, was arrested by one Capt. Buhari Adamu, yesterday, Saturday 29th September 2018..

The fake army officer was arrested at the operational base of the military at Kada Motels Birnin-Gwari, adjacent Bagoma Dam in Kaduna state, where he has been staying for over two years.

He has since been handed to the Major Muhammad Gana, field command officer in-charge of the area.

As high-wired intrigues continue to play out in Lagos State over the incumbent governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode’s re-election bid, competent sources saturday revealed that a key segment of the party led by the National Leader of All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has asked the governor to stand down his second term bid or face impeachment. The threat to impeach the governor is an escalation of pressure being piled on him to drop his quest for second term.

A competent party source sympathetic to the governor, who demanded annonimity since he was not authorised to speak on the intrigues and power play currently playing out informed THISDAY yesterday, “they are threatening to impeach him should he refused to bow to their demand to withdraw. The incumbent governor, who is traditionally entitled to another term is being harassed and intimidated by Tinubu’s political machine to withdraw for their new man, even though the governor had agreed to subject himself to primary. They are boasting that they will direct the State House of Assembly to immediatly begin impeachment proceedings against him.”

The APC had initially insisted on conducting direct primary election to select its governorship candidate in the spirit of democracy. But it suddenly reversed itself, directing Ambode to withdraw from the contest to enable the party present Sanwo-Olu as the consensus candidate.

It also emerged yesterday via a statement from the Vice President’s office denying endorsing Sanwo-Olu. “It was while he was coming out of the GAC meeting that Mr. Sanwo-Olu and Mr. Hamzat took advantage of the VP’S presence to take the photos which are now being falsely paraded as proof of endorsement.

“The VP did not go there to endorse Sanwo-Olu., they only took advantage of his presence,” a source at the meeting confirmed last night.”

Rather, sources at the GAC meetings hinted that Prof Osinbajo, who is believed to be supportive of a second term bid for Ambode, conveyed the view of the Buhari presidency that there should be a level playing field in the overall conduct of the primaries.

Party chieftains spoke with THISDAY yesterday in confidence on the drama that took place at the meeting of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) held Friday night. They disclosed that the APC leader threatened to impeach Ambode if the governor refused “to step down for Sanwo-Olu.” Ambode was said to have looked him squarely in the face and refused.

But Ambode Mandate Support Group condemned the call for the governor’s withdrawal as undemocratic. The group also reacted to the postponement of the APC governorship primary in the state, which has now been scheduled for October 1, saying they were confident that Ambode would fly the party’s flag in 2019 election as it has received overwhelming support from several quarters for him.

There has been uncertainty about governor’s re-election after Sanwo-Olu, currently the managing director of Lagos State Development and Property Corporation (LSDPC), and former commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, declared their intention to challenge the governor in a primary contest.

As a result, the Mandate Movement, a powerful political machine of Tinubu, endorsed Sanwo-Olu for the governorship contest, heating up the state’s political climate ahead of the primary election.

Ambode’s travails had attracted the intervention of President Muhammadu Buhari; former Ogun State Governor, Chief Olusegun Osoba; Oyo State Governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi; the Progressives Governors Forum (PGF); and the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF). They all tried to persuade Tinubu to make up with Ambode.

With the presidential intervention, Tinubu decided to consult the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), the state’s highest advisory political organ, comprising 22 APC chieftains across the three senatorial districts. But in its resolution, the GAC directed Ambode and two other aspirants to face the direct primary election.

At the GAC meeting held at Tinubu’s residence, Bourdillion, Ikoyi, Friday night, one of the party chieftains explained how Ambode addressed the leaders of the GAC, justifying point by point the reasons he decided to seek re-election in 2019.

Specifically, according to the chieftain, Ambode hinged his re-election bid on the need to complete various infrastructure projects and urban renewal programmes that his administration initiated in the last three years.

Despite his justifying his re-election bid, the party chieftain stated that Lagos Central APC leader, Prince Tajudeen Olusi, asked the governor “to step down for Sanwo-Olu. He claimed that the GAC had already endorsed Sanwo-Olu as the party’s consensus candidate.”

Another party chieftain revealed that a member of the GAC, Prof. Tunde Samuel, interrupted Olusi while he was telling Ambode to withdraw from the race, observing that Olusi’s statement did not reflect a common position of all GAC members that all aspirants should face primary contest.

In response to Olusi, however, the party chieftain claimed that Ambode simply told the meeting that he “will not step down for any governorship aspirants on the ground that it is undemocratic. He also said he stood by the earlier position of the GAC that all aspirants should face direct primary contest to foster democracy in the country.

The source stated, at this point, Tinubu, who chaired the GAC meeting, became angry and quickly interjected, threatening Ambode with impeachment, if he failed to stand down for Sanwo-Olu before the primary election earlier scheduled to hold today which was later postponed till tomorrow by the APC national secretariat.

THISDAY learnt that it was resolved at the meeting that a stakeholders’ meeting should be held on Saturday at the party secretariat, Acme road, Ogba. It was expected that Tinubu would come to the meeting to endorse Sanwo-Olu. To their surprise however, thousands of Ambode’s supporters thronged the venue chanting Ambode solidarity songs and raining curses on national leader: Tinubu ole Tinubu ole.

Eventually, Tinubu was forced to stay away.

When THISDAY contacted Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Media, Mr. Tunde Rahman, for his reaction to the threat to impeach the governor by Tinubu’s camp, he responded, saying he did not “have any comment to make.”

Rather than attending as originally planned, Tinubu delegated a GAC leader, Senator Anthony Adefuye, to represent him.

At the stakeholders’ meeting, Adefuye acknowledged that there was another GAC meeting, which held by 10 am on Saturday, noting that the meeting was attended by the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, and Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, among others.

Adefuye said, “The meeting was chaired by the APC national leader, Tinubu. This is a meeting that we started at 10am. And we could not finish early. After the meeting, I have been mandated by the GAC to announce this to you that the primary earlier scheduled for Saturday, September 30 has been shifted to Monday, October 1.

Fresh facts have emerged on how the Governor of Rivers State, Mr. Nyesom Wike was able to mobilise members of the National Executive Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party to get Port Harcourt endorsed for the party ’s national convention on Friday.

Investigations by our correspondent showed that two presidential aspirants in the party were behind the plot to take the convention out of Rivers State.

The aspirants were said to have suggested Enugu for the event.

Unfortunately for them, the state was said to have declined the suggestion.

The two aspirants (names withheld) are said to be from North-West and North -East, respectively.

It was gathered that one of the aspirants was initially very close to Wike and had thought that he would be his ally in his bid to pick the party’s presidential ticket.

However, it was gathered that Wike had refused to give his commitment to the aspiration of his friend.

A source close to the party said that sensing that Wike was becoming too close to one of the aspirants from the North-West, the two aspirants ganged up and stared reaching out to their friends in the Board of Trustees to call for the change of venue for the convention.

The source said, “There are two presidential aspirants who were not comfortable with the use of Port Harcourt for the convention.

“Both of them are even supposed to be members of the BoT. One of them is very desperate and have even been going about as if he has emerged as the PDP presidential candidate.

“He has taken almost half of the hotel in Port Harcourt, until the state found out and stopped the plan by him to book all the hotels.

“The plan was to make all the delegates rely on him for accommodation and thereby force to do their bidding.

“But Wike moved in swiftly and stop the plan. That’s how they became enemies.

“The other one felt that he had been loyal to the party and therefore, Wike being another loyal member of the party, must work with him to get the ticket.”

Our correspondent gathered that when the two aspirants knew that they might not get the suport of the governor, they resorted to the BoT members.

The Chairman of the BoT, Senator Walid Jibrin, had openly disagreed with the members of the National Working Committee on the use of Port Harcourt for the convention.

Jibrin, during the inauguration of the party’s National Convention Committee, openly told the Deputy National Chairman of the party, Mr. Taiwo Akinwomi that the party had yet to conclude on the issue of venue for the convention.

Sensing that the plan could be truncated, it was learnt that Wike had to mobilise his friends who are members of NEC to attend the meeting.

“That was why we had so many bigwigs in attendance despite the short notice for the meeting,” the source said.

No victor, no vanguished, says Fayose

Meanwhile, the Governor of Ekiti State, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, has said the conflict over the venue for PDP’s forthcoming national convention was resolved amicably and that there was no victor and no vanquished.

In a statement from his office on Saturday, the governor said it was mischievous of anyone to say Wike won the argument.

“Nobody won. Neither Wike nor PDP was in contest. It is, therefore, uncharitable to say that Wike won”, he added.

Some few days backs, photos of Tonto Dikeh and Tiwa Savage kneeling before veteran Juju music maestro, Sir Shina Peters at an event surfaced on the internet and immediately generated mixed reactions.

However, while speaking with Sunday Scoop, Sir Shina Peters said Tiwa Savage did the right thing and he appreciated her gesture towards him.

“This is what I always preach. Tiwa Savage showed that she is very humble and respectful and that is how it is supposed to be. When I meet people who are older than me, I also bow before them. I wasn’t surprised she did what she did.

“I am enjoying now because of what I have done in the past and I will continue to pray for all them for showing me respect. When some of these younger ones make money, they lack respect.
“I don’t demand anyone to kneel down for me, but if you feel I deserve it, I am okay with it. I do that to people too and it is part of our culture. If you look at the photo well, you will see that I quickly lifted her up. I was also not comfortable with keeping her on the ground for too long.”

Tinsel star actress, Damilola Adegbite has hinted that she might write a book about her crashed marriage to Ghanaian star, Chris Attoh, to give her fans first hand information on what transpired between the duo.

In a chat with Sunday Scoop, Damilola Adegbite was asked if she was willing to give marriage another try, she said:
“Of course, why not? I never say never. This time, I will be looking out for a man; he has to be a man (in the real sense of the word). I don’t try to foresee things as I prefer to live in the moment.
I learnt a lot from my past experience (in marriage) and I may have to write a book about it. There are quite a lot of things and I wouldn’t want to single out one. If I single it out, it may seem like the most important one when it’s not so; they are all very important.”

Damilola also believed marriage between two entertainers could work successfully:
“I don’t see why marriages between entertainers cannot work,” she said.
Speaking on her experience working on the movie, Merry Men, with AY, she said:
“It was an amazing one for me. I had a good time doing it. This was the first time I worked with AY and I really enjoyed it. However, my dream role is to be a Bond girl. I like the physical part of running and jumping; that’d be a bit more exciting than the drama we are used to in this side. I wouldn’t say I’m a tomboy but I like to work out and get active.
Before agreeing to be in any movie, I check my character in it and the story in general; I have to connect to it before I can be part of it. I also consider the other actors that would be on the project.”

The actress also maintained that acting was the only job she had ever thought of doing:
“Right from when I was a little girl, I’ve always wanted to be in the spotlight. And I’m also lucky because my parents supported me from the outset. I think I had my breakthrough in the TV series, Tinsel,” she stated.
Speaking on the cause of the scar just around her eyes, Adegbite said:
“It was a car accident when I was younger. It was a ghastly one and at the point of impact, everything just went blank for me and my face was ruined.”
On if she would consider cosmetic surgery, Damilola said:
“Why not? Every woman is entitled to being confident (in her body). Thankfully, I don’t need to. Maybe 10 years down the line, when my cheek or nose probably begins to sag, I would think about doing something.”

Fourteen years after you founded Africa Movie Academy Awards, AMAA, have you achieved your goals?
I think AMAA is work in progress, but I think we are getting there. I am hoping that it is setting itself up to run itself. It is not so much about me. I want people to deal with AMAA as a brand. It is very difficult in Nigeria, when you want your brand not to be associated with you.
Could you tell us more about the award this year?
This year is going to be the second time that the main event would be holding outside Nigeria. This year, it will hold in Kigali, Rwanda. AMAA is 14 and it’s been a long, hard road. There is a reason for keeping it going. I feel that a lot of things changed within the industry when AMAA came along, especially in terms of quality control. Therefore, a lot of people say to us that we are always very choosy in our nominations. Our reason for that is very simple.
Film has one language, so the quality of a product should be able to travel to anybody to understand what you are saying. You can’t just make a film because of the Nigerian audience; there’s the world audience. For me, it is important that the language of form is something that everybody can relate to. I think that is one of the reasons that the AMAA jury system is something that I have tried as much as possible to leave where it is.
I am totally not involved in the screening process, which has had Shuaibu Hussain, as the chair of the screening committee in the last 10 years. Every single film that comes into AMAA must be watched from the beginning to the end. We don’t compromise on that. For me, that is one major achievement that AMAA has done – that is, trying to encapsulate what a quality product is from the continent and from the Diaspora and then push it out there.

Updated: NLC, TUC disruption costs Air Peace over N60m

FOLLOWING today’s strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress ( NLC) and the Trade Union Congress( TUC), Air Peace says it has lost over N60million including destruction of property at the General Aviation Terminal (GAT)
Nigerianflightdeck.com earlier reported losses for airlines at the GAT but hard hit was domestic carrier Air Peace which due to the disruption commenced their own flight by 11 due to the length of the strike.

Barrister Allen Onyema, the Air Peace Chairman who lamented what happened was perplexed that Air Peace was singled out as the disruption did not affect other airlines in the terminal.
He said because of the disruption the airline might have to fly late into the next day as they would have to commence the day light operations to ensure that those flights go.
Reports gathered by Nigerianflightdeck.com from a credible source is that the unions stormed the GAT in their numbers disrupting the activities there.
Counters of some airlines were seen shut as they groaned following the impact of the disruption.

However, Nigerianflightdeck.com also learnt that the same treatment was not meted on the Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal 2(MMA2) operated by Bi-Courtney Aviation services Limited as flights from there operated normally without hitches.

With what has happened flights into airports that can only operate visual services like Owerri, Benin, Ondo State will be affected.

The unions which were around the GAT for over 4 hours were said by some airlines to have wreaked havoc on their operations.
Corporate Communication Manager, Air Peace, Chris Iwarah who spoke to Nigerianflightdeck.com said the situation was sad and unfortunate and is unfair to the airline.

” it is sad and with what the unions have done, it affects all our operations. As I speak to you because we did not follow our schedule we may be unable to do our late flights into airports like Owerri, Benin, Ondo because the landing on those airports are visual and not instruments.”

” We are not against the union’s strike but they can carry out their industrial action without using it to affect the private businesses of others.”
Passengers who were affected by the union’s actions did not find it funny however stressing that the unions were only thinking about them not everyone.

“What is wrong with these unionists?” A passenger who simply wanted to be identified as Bertha said.

“If they were that intent on crippling the country they should have gone to the motor parks to stop vehicles from traveling out of the state or those ‘danfo’ from moving. Instead they are here and I am missing my flight,” she said.
Media Manager of Arik Air, Adebanji Ola who also spoke to our correspondent, said the unionists disrupted their counters briefly before moving on.

He however said, flights have resumed and Arik’s services gave commenced normally.

The Red Devils' 3-1 defeat at West Ham on Saturday made this their worst start to a top-flight season since 1989-90.
