ABUJA – THE fight for 2019 Presidential Election reared its head Wednesday at Senate Committee screening of nominees when Senators on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress ( APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP) sharply disagreed over comment by the spokesperson of Buhari Campaign Organisation, Mr Festus Keyamo that the PDP Presidential Candidate, Atiku Abubakar was corrupt. 

Trouble started when Kayemo appeared before the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and other Financial Institutions for screening as a nominee into the governing board of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation ( NDIC). 

Tempers were however high when the Chairman of the Committee, Senator Rafiu Ibrahim ( PDP Kwara South), reminded Keyamo of his recent comment that Atiku Abubakar is corrupt. Senator Ibrahim while trying to drill Keyamo on the comment said : ” I want to refer to your words when you said the presidential candidate of the PDP is corrupt. 

I think you may have to wait until you’re done with the job before you can sit on the board. This is something that I saw myself. You just have to educate us properly on how you can balance the two.” But APC members of the committee like Danjuma Goje ( Gombe Central), Umar Kurfi ( Katsina Central), Fatimah Raji Rasaki ( Ekiti Central) etc, disagreed with Senator Ibrahim by warning him not to mix politics with the screening exercise. Specifically Senator Goje in his reaction said : ” I want to observe and caution the chairman that in as much as we belong to different political parties, we shouldn’t bring too much politics on this matter. 

In fact, we have more APC members here, so if we want to vote, we can vote against you. Our government is doing a lot and we’re doing everything possible to see that things are done well” In her reaction, Senator Raji Rasaki said : “I think what we’re doing should have nothing to do with politics. 

I believe Mr Keyamo if cleared will be a very good assets for the NDIC while Kurfi submitted that Keyamo is an asset that must be allowed to serve on the NDIC board.” Responding to the alleged comment , Keyamo said : “When the Senate of the United States came out to say that somebody brought slush fund into the US and as such the person is corrupt, we can call the person corrupt. That’s what we relied on. But we can’t call such person a convict”.

The United Nations has begun partial movement back to its edifice in Abuja, Nigeria, eight years after it was bombed by boko haram insurgents.

The UN Resident Coordinator, Edward Kallon , announced the movement to the building at the celebration of the 73rd UN Day on Wednesday in Abuja.

Mr. Kallon explained that the UN building built by the Federal Government was being occupied by the UN agencies in 2005 until the unfortunate bombing on August 26, 2011.

“The 2018 UN Day is a very important day for the UN system in Nigeria as it underscores the excellent cooperation and partnership of the UN and Nigeria over the years.

“Indeed this year’s UN Day also marks the UN family partial move back to the UN House.

“To the UN in Nigeria the UN House is a symbol of the resilience of our extraordinary cooperation and partnership with the Government and people of Nigeria,” he explained.

“The 2011 bombing of the UN house was an attack against those who devoted themselves to serving UN values,” according to Mr. Kallon.

He commended the Nigerian Government and its citizens for their commitment to rebuild the UN House.

Mr. Kallon expressed the hope that the partial movement which he said would begin with UNDP, UNICEF among others would inspire the staff to work better.

He said that the movement would help the workers build stronger partnerships and build a better future for the people of Nigeria.

“Let us recommit ourselves, while celebrating the UN Day to make the world a better place for all, where nobody will be left behind,” he said.

In a message, the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Mohammed Bello, described the event as significant as it marked the first time of gathering again at the building after the 2011 bombing of the building.

The Minister who was represented by Mr. Umar Jubril, an official of the Ministry said the reopening represented the fulfillment of efforts to rebuild but to make the UN building better.

“The UN building stands out as the symbol of our resilience and unbroken promises in addressing various challenges we are facing as a nation,” he said

Congratulating UN family on the return to the edifice, he assured them of the FCT’s commitment on security of life and property of all staff and their families and the institution

“The FCT Administration has worked to improve the security architecture in the territory to forestall reoccurrence of the last ugly incidence.”

“We have beefed up security presence in and around the premises and ensure security surveillance around the area.

“We also pledge our commitment to serve as a good host to the UN family urge your staff to feel welcome in the FCT in which the ideal,” he said.

The UN building in Abuja, Nigeria was bombed through a car bomb explosion on Friday, August 26th, 2011 which killed about 21 people and wounded 60 persons.

The former special assistant to president Jonathan on New Media Barr Reno Omokri has come down heavily on his former friend Mallam Nasiru Elrufai the Governor of Kaduna state.

Reno uploaded a screenshot of Elrufai's tweet in response to a curfew imposed on Kaduna in june of 2011, where El- rufai tweeted: 

Does it make political and economic sense to impose a 9pm to 6am curfew on a democracy . is this not a violation of Human right.

In his response Reno wrote: if you dont believe @elrufai the @GovKaduna is an opportunistic hypocrite look at the accusations he made against @official PDP in 2011 and compare it to what he is doing today . He complained about 9pm to 6 am curfew and then declares a 24 hour curfew .


Many residents of the Kaduna have accused the governor of selfishly triggering the current ethno-political crisis for political gains. ABUJA—The national leadership of All Progressives Congress, APC, yesterday, rallied against forces seeking removal of the chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, describing Governors Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara, Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun and Rochas Okorocha of Imo states as bad losers.

The party said the governors sought to circumvent the democratic process to project their interests.

Governor Okorocha, Vanguard gathered, may have continued his agitations against Oshiomhole, having discovered that contrary to expectations, his son-in-law’s name, Uche Nwosu, was not submitted as the APC governorship candidate.

Senator Hope Uzodinma’s name was pencilled down for submission in respect of the governorship by the Oshiomhole leadership to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

The party’s claims came against the background of foundering moves by the anti-Oshiomhole lobby to rally themselves to force out the former governor of Edo State from the office of national chairman.

All these came as Governor Rotimi Akeredolu yesterday said the All Progressives Congress (APC) primaries has exposed the incompetence of the party’s national chairman, Adams Oshiomhole. Akeredolu was reacting to an allegation that three governors led by him were bent on sabotaging the party.

Govs opposed to Oshiomhole fail to meet

A meeting of the anti-Oshiomhole governors scheduled to hold last night was still on hold upon misgivings among some of the governors that the anti-Oshiomhole agitation had turned into a personal agenda for Governors Yari who is chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum, NGF and Okorocha, chairman of the APC Progressive Governors Forum, PGF.

The agitations were, however, yet to abate. Yesterday, the Deputy Governor of Ogun State, Mrs. Yetunde Onanuga, threatened to protest Unclad with women party operatives in Abuja tomorrow.

The Acting National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, in a session with correspondents in Abuja yesterday, decried the allegations against Oshiomhole and the national leadership as a fallout of the failure of some of the governors and chieftains to project their interests in the party.

Issa-Onilu who took up the issues raised against Oshiomhole and the leadership according to the states and personalities involved, said:

Ogun State

“It is a straight forward case. If we speak to the merit of this case, the whole world saw it, the visuals were everywhere, where the Ogun State governor gathered some aspirants, stakeholders and said clearly, there won’t be primaries and right there he pointed at who the next governorship, senatorial, and House of Representatives candidates would be. He named himself the next senatorial candidate.

“Even if they have accepted those people, it is against the procedure, especially for a governor to openly say a thing like that.

“It was clearly stated the party gave two options which is the direct and indirect primaries and you are to have stakeholders’ meetings where majority will decide.

“In the case of Ogun, after that exercise failed after they tried to hand-pick who will be what, they sent a letter that they have agreed on direct primary and the party has no choice than to endorse what they want.

“On the day they all came for screening including the governor, he suddenly left with other aspirants and returned to Abeokuta; gathered some people and sent back to the NWC that they wanted indirect primary and the other aspirants said we were all here together, that they didn’t know when this change was made.

“Meanwhile, someone had gone to court and the court had barred the state executive from anything to do with the party but we all saw on national television where the Governor and the state executive actually conducted their own primary and the process threw up the governor’s preferred candidate.

“It was the SSG in Ogun State, who was reading the result until it occurred to him that he had no power to announce the names. So he handed over to the state chairman of the party who also shouldn’t have done that – he is statutorily barred, the court had told him not to participate in the primary. Secondly, the state chairman has no power to conduct primary; that power resides with the NWC.

“So whatever the governor did was self-help and there is no provision for self-help in the party’s constitution. Eventually the NWC panel constituted to conduct the primary went to Abeokuta and did the primary. The governor’s preferred candidate chose not to participate in that exercise. So the party stands by the result of that primary it conducted in Ogun state.

“The governor has done his best to get validation for his self-help. That is not possible. The first thing he did was to start saying things that made it look like something wrong has happened when nothing of such has happened.

“Secondly, he took some monarchs to meet the president. I am surprised because someone like him, with due respect, should have understood the nature of the President we have; that no matter how close you are to him, he will listen to you but he will ask for the rules to be followed.

“So, the next thing we had, he was looking for whom to blame, and Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and Chief Segun Osoba readily came to his mind and he blamed them for that. The question to ask is whether they were the ones who gave directive to him to organise his own primaries or they were the ones who instructed him not to participate in the primaries or his candidate not to participate in primaries the party organised.

Against the background of the alleged procedural faults of Governor Amosun, the party spokesman put some posers to Governor Amosun.

“Am I asking for what is fair? Am I not putting the party in a position to ask them to do what’s wrong? Those are the questions we expect the Governor of Ogun State to ask himself. He needs to self-appraise, look at the actions he has taken and come to the conclusion that he’s taking the wrong route.”

Kaduna State

Justifying the party’s action in initially putting a return ticket in the hands of Senator Shehu Sani, he said:

“It was the outcome of the primary, properly conducted. The party tried to protect its members in the National Assembly for obvious reasons, following what has been going on at the National Assembly.

“We know the carrots that had been dangled at them. We have a responsibility to ensure that we have a grip on the legislative arm of government so that we can run a smooth government.

“The initial effort of the party did not get the blessing of other people in that area who are also entitled to bid for positions. The primaries were eventually conducted, Senator Shehu Sani opted out; he relied on the earlier decision.

“At the end of the day, no matter what plan you have, even though you are acting on expediency, rule of law, democracy will prevail. It was democracy that prevailed in Kaduna.

Zamfara State

“We submitted list of candidates for legislative elections in Zamfara State. If INEC did not take it, it is a different thing. We have a right to submit and INEC has the legal responsibility to receive. INEC cannot disqualify candidates; we all know that. We have said clearly that whatever claims INEC is making is neither correct nor a true representation of what happened and we will continue to take progressive steps to ensure that INEC does what is right.”

Imo State

“The issue of submission of governorship candidates to INEC falls due on November 2nd, so we haven’t reached the stage of where we will submit names or beat the deadline. You are aware that there was a court action challenging the Imo governorship primary election. The position of the party is that whatever court judgement, good or bad, we must comply with it. We will only decide who will be APC’s governorship candidate for Imo State by November 2nd.”

On VON D-G, Okechukwu

The party spokesman also frontally rebutted assertions of nepotism and other charges levelled against Oshiomhole by Osita Okechukwu, Director-General of the Voice of Nigeria, VON on Channels Television yesterday morning.

Noting that Okechukwu’s outbursts flowed from his failure to pick the Enugu West senatorial ticket, he said:

“He has a right to ventilate his anger and it is for the party to also listen to him. He may have gone overboard, making all sorts of unfounded allegations but you also have to understand the situation that he is in now; he lost out.

“There would be someone to blame in such a situation so he has picked on the National Chairman unfortunately. But the chairman has no blame in this. If you have issues with the process, you can complain about the process. We have an appeal panel, you could take recourse to that.

“If he does have very good reasons to have redress, he would get that but he has chosen to go that path (media) which is quite unfortunate. It is not everybody who has lost an election that has the capacity to soak it in. Some must express themselves in the way Osita Okechukwu has chosen to go about it. It is not about the National Chairman like I have said, it is about the fact that he is a party to the dispute and in such a situation, not everybody would win; some must lose. He lost it in his reaction to it, everything he said was completely at variance with the real situation.

Allegations of nepotism

Responding to Okechukwu’s allegations of nepotism levelled against Oshiomhole that he populated the panels sent to the states with his cronies from Edo State, party spokesman said:

“There are five members for each state on the panel (which conducted the primary) we have 36 states and the FCT for the National Assembly and he (Osita Okechukwu) mentioned only nine panel chairs (from Edo state). Definitely, the others are from some (other) states. By the time you add up the figures, you find out that the appointment of nine cannot be called nepotism in a situation where you have 36 states. When you pick what suits your cause that is what he has done but by the time all the facts are laid there are no issues. Everything boils down to the fact that he lost out and he is not happy about it, there must be a culprit, somebody must be blamed for it.”

APC govs’ meeting on hold

Meanwhile, a meeting of APC governors set to articulate issues against Oshiomhole was set to hold last night. However, the prospects of getting a full house was in doubt yesterday over assertions that some governors had departed from the agitation against the party chairman which some of them were beginning to see as a personal project of Governors Okorocha and Yari.

Vanguard gathered that the NWC had pencilled down Senator Hope Uzodinma as the party’s candidate despite the insistence by Governor Okorocha that he should have the Senate ticket for himself and the governorship ticket for his son-in-law.

A source privy to the development said:

“Rochas was asked to take one of the two, either Senate ticket or governorship but he is insisting on the two. What do we do with the others? He is saying that he can win the election for us alone, but we cannot take his word to the bank,” the source said.

The NWC, Vanguard gathered has upon the governor’s insistence pencilled down Uzodinma’s name for the governorship, a fact he said might have stimulated Okorocha’s angst.

Protests in Abeokuta

Meanwhile, yesterday female party members from the three senatorial districts of Ogun State protested through the streets of Abeokuta against the emergence of Dapo Abiodun as the party’s governorship candidate. The women vowed that they would, by tomorrow, occupy Abuja Unclad in support of their agitation for Abdul-Kabir Akinlade to be recognised as the candidate.

They were received by the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Yetunde Onanuga who promised to join them in their agitation in Abuja.

The state party woman leader, Shade Giwa who led hundreds of party faithful to the secretariat of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Oke-Ilewo in Abeokuta accused the NWC of announcing an aspirant that is not popular as the party’s governorship candidate.

Giwa also claimed that Dapo Abiodun was nowhere to be found during the primary election the party held across the state on October 2, 2018.

Giwa, while speaking with newsmen at NUJ Secretariat said “On October 2nd we voted for Hon Abdul Kabir Akinlade during the primary election and he emerged as the winner. But the electoral committee announced Hon Dapo Abiodun as the winner, who was nowhere to be found during the election.

“We are warning all the NWC led by Adams Oshiomole because women are going to take action if they fail to announce Akinlade as the party candidate before Friday. We are going to storm Abuja to express our displeasure and we will go Unclad.”

“The Electoral committee should be warned, Adams Oshiomole, should be warned, he should release our mandate, we give him till Friday to announce the result or else, by Saturday, we will meet at Abuja.

“We want the whole Nigeria to know that we in Ogun State are of Ogun Standard and we cannot take anything apart from that. In the party primary recently conducted in Ogun, we voted for Adekunle Akinlade, we don’t know Dapo.

Addressing the protesting women at Oke-Mosan Governor’s Office, the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Onanuga applauded the women for leaving their homes to defend their rights.

“I have seen the reason you came here in support of Honourable Abdulkabir Akinlade. For the past weeks they have been helping us in Abuja and they will continue to help us.

“Let us exercise patience; when it is time for us to go to Abuja, I’ll personally follow you to Abuja

Party chairman, Chief Derin Adebiyi also claimed that Akinlade is the right choice.

He said, “We all know it is Akinlade we voted for; for those who didn’t vote and lied it is left to them.”

APC crisis: Group flays Amosun for deriding Tinubu, Osoba

Meanwhile, a group within the APC in the South-West, Progressives Mandate, has flayed Governor Amosun over his attacks on the National Leader of the party, Senator Bola Tinubu.

In a statement issued by the coordinator of the group in Lagos, Hon. Biyi Akintayo, the group said the outburst of Amosun against Tinubu and the former governor of Ogun State, Aremo Segun Osoba, was unwarranted and needless.

According to the group, accusing Tinubu and Osoba of perpetrating fraud in the emergence of Prince Abiodun as APC governorship candidate in Ogun State, is either an act of deceit or forgetfulness on the part of the outgoing governor, Amosun.

The statement read: “How will Amosun accuse Osoba and Tinubu of electoral fraud? Has Amosun suddenly forgotten that these were the duo that enabled his emergence in 2011?”

Going down memory lane, the group said, “As new decampees into the now defunct ACN, Sen. Ibikunle Amosun and Hon. Abiodun Isiaq Akinlade were the star boys of the party in the build up to the 2011 polls. When about seven other aspirants decided that they should jointly have a preferred candidate, held at Ikeja and chaired by Aare Remi Bakare with the likes of Dr. Kayode Soyinka, Prince Kayode Tejuoso, Mr. Temitope Kuyebi, Gbenga Obadara and Hon. Abiodun Akinlade amongst others in attendance, Hon. Akinlade emerged and his name was to be forwarded to the leadership of the party the following week.

“Shockingly, before the name of Akinlade could be officially communicated to the leadership of the party in just less than a week, a meeting was summoned by Osoba, who is the leader of the party at an hotel in Abeokuta GRA, which is not far from the residence of Amosun.

“With the then chairman of the ACN, Alh. Tajudeen Bello and late Baba Adeniji presiding over the meeting alongside the Abuja stakeholders, the incumbent governor, Sen. Amosun was, to the chagrin of other aspirants, announced as the choice of the party hierarchy. After all the hues and cries, the other aggrieved aspirants agreed with the decision and moved on.

“Just about a week after the name of Senator Amosun had been forwarded to INEC as ACN candidate, Amosun left for CPC, but he swiftly showed up when the guber ticket had been conceded to Hon. Akinlade.

“After pleading with the same Asiwaju Tinubu that he is deriding today, Baba Osoba was prevailed upon to forgive Amosun another chance and the rest remain history.

“In sum, it is on record that the duo of Osoba and Tinubu were conspicuously instrumental to his emergence as the Governor of Ogun state. For the records, all these happened without Amosun going through any election. The question begging for answer is, has Amosun forgotten so soon?

“One is not unaware of how Amosun begged his way to the Oke Mosan Governor’s office in 2011; he was even at the Owode-Yewa residence of Hon. Abiodun Akinlade to commend him for conceding the ticket to him in the build-up of the 2011 polls.

For Amosun to call on them of fraud as regards their silence on the emergence of Dapo Abiodun as APC candidate for 2019 polls, leaves more to desire especially for the discerning minds in Ogun State, the statement said.

Oshiomhole’s incompetence exposed — Akeredolu


Governor Rotimi Akeredolu yesterday said the All Progressives Congress (APC) primaries has exposed the incompetence of the party’s national chairman, Adams Oshiomhole.

Akeredolu was reacting to an allegation that three governors, led by him were bent on sabotaging the party.

The governor in a statement last night issued in Akure by his Senior Special Adviser on Special Duties and Strategy, Dr. Doyin Odebowale said the primaries “not only exposed the “sheer incompetence” of APC’s national leadership, but revealed “a shocking proclivity towards banditry and impunity”.

He said recent events justified his opposition to Oshiomhole’s choice as party chairman.

According to him: “Those who feel aggrieved reserve the right to demand justice, including calling for Oshiomhole’s removal.

Akeredolu, however, restated his commitment to work “assiduously” for President Muhammadu Buhari’s re-election, who he said is loved by the people of Ondo who see his re-election as a “patriotic duty”.

Akeredolu described organizers of the Abuja protest as “opportunists”, and denied the allegation that he led governors of Ogun, Kaduna Adamawa and Ekiti States against Oshiomole’s leadership.

He said he found the report laughable and distracting, adding that as a fiercely independent personality, he was not about to change his attitude to please any person or a group of persons.

“There is no truth in the whole contrivance. The governor has been pre-occupied with matters of governance in Ondo State for which he was elected,” the statement said.

The governor recalled his “noble interventions” as Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) President at critical moments in the cause of the progressives, including helping restore Oshiomhole’s stolen mandate.

Two former top executives of energy firm, Afren, were on Wednesday convicted after they were found guilty of money laundering offences in the United Kingdom.

Osman Shahenshah and Shahid Ullah were found guilty of fraud and money laundering offences from which prosecutors said they personally received more than $17 million in a case involving Oriental Energy, founded by Nigerian billionaire oil magnate Muhammadu Indimi.

Prosecutors said Mr Shahenshah, 55, the former chief executive of Afren and Mr Ullah, 58, the oil company’s Texas-based former chief operating officer, laundered $45 million by deceiving the Afren Board into agreeing a $300 million business deal.

Following a shareholder revolt which objected to their £6.6 million and £3.8 million salary packages and faced with the possibility of lower remuneration in future, the two hatched a fraudulent scheme to secretly increase their pay

Details seen by PREMIUM TIMES from the U.K Serious Fraud Office (SFO) showed that Messrs Shahenshah and Ullah created a side deal with one of Afren’s Nigerian oil partners, Oriental Energy, that would allow them to benefit from payments Afren would make.

The men recommended a transaction to the Afren Board, who then approved payments of hundreds of millions of dollars without knowing that Messrs Shahenshah and Ullah stood to personally benefit. The transaction was claimed to be necessary to maintain the business partnership, but the fact that Messrs Shahenshah and Ullah stood to benefit personally remained hidden.

In his comments, Lisa Osofsky, Director of the Serious Fraud Office, said greed motivated the crime.

“Osman Shahenshah and Shahid Ullah failed in their duties as company directors, abused their positions and lied to their board,” he said.

“Instead of acting in their company’s best interests, they used Afren like a personal bank account to fund an illicit deal, with no regard for the consequences.

“Fraud corrodes confidence, undermines trust and damages the reputation of the UK at home and abroad. It is our mission to bring those committing this crime to justice.”



Details showed that the criminal investigation into the former CEO and COO of the collapsed oil and gas exploration company began in June 2015 following a self-report by the company, with the defendants charged with four offences in September last year.


The SFO said Messrs Shahenshah and Ullah recommended that the Afren Board agree to a $300 million payment to Oriental Energy Resources Ltd, the company’s oil field partner in Nigeria. But SFO said that unknown to the Afren board, Messrs Shahenshah and Ullah had struck a side deal with Oriental which led to 15 per cent of the $300 million was then paid out to a Caribbean shell company controlled by the defendants. The men then used the $45 million to purchase luxury properties in Mustique and the British Virgin Islands.

The UK prosecutors said a smaller portion of the $45 million laundered was split between Oriental employees and a close network of Afren staff dubbed ‘The A Team’.

Oriental’s Position

In 2014, Afren dismissed the two officials after an independent review by law firm Willkie Farr & Gallagher LP (WFG) alleged that the duo received more than $17 million in unauthorised payments from Oriental, its Nigerian joint-venture partner and 60 percent equity owner operator of the Ebok assets, offshore Nigeria.


In the law firm review, WFG alleged that Ntiti is owned and controlled by Messrs Shahenshah and Ullah, and that they had used the vehicle to pay special bonuses to themselves and other Afren employees.

But Oriental in its reaction dismissed allegations of unauthorised payments made to its employees.

Earlier in 2012, the company said, Oriental and Afren initially entered into the Oriental Ebok Forward Sale of Crude Oil Agreement. Through the deal, Oriental said it agreed to sell approximately one million barrels of its future oil production to Afren thereby permitting Afren to book those reserves in 2012. The reason the $100 million payment to Oriental was included in Afren’s balance sheet for 31 December 2012 under the line “Prepayment and Advances to Partners” is because it was a prepayment for Oriental’s future oil production, it said.

The company argued that in October 2013, it entered into an agreement with NTITI, the Oil Field Development Optimization Services Agreement, represented by senior executives of the Ebok Joint Operating Team (“JOT”).

The statement by Amina Indimi, the company’s media contact, added that there was an agreement to pay 15 per cent of the cash flows from its joint venture with Afren into a special purpose vehicle called Ntiti BVI, which was intended to reward and retain key employees connected to the project.



“Under the Optimisation Agreement Oriental agreed to pay up to 15% of its annual net Ebok Profit Oil proceeds to NTITI for the purpose of providing incentive compensation and retention of key employees who had proven themselves to be essential members of the Ebok JOT, a group reporting to the Ebok Operating Committee and comprised of employees seconded by both Oriental and Afren, as provided by the JOA,” the company said in a press statement.

“The Optimisation Agreement provided financial compensation to select key employees of both companies upon attainment of annual performance goals set by the Ebok Operating Committee. Oriental had every reason to believe that the Optimisation Agreement had been disclosed, at least in conceptual form, to members of the Afren Board.

“Oriental utterly refutes Afren’s use of the term “ostensibly” in describing the intent of the Optimisation Agreement. It was clear to everyone privy to the Optimisation Agreement that its intent and anticipated effect in rewarding and retaining key employees of the Project was in fact the sole purpose of that Agreement and would be wholly to the benefit of the Ebok Joint Venture participants, Afren and Oriental equally.”

Afren’s troubled history

Afren Plc is an oil company in which a former Nigerian oil minister, Rilwanu Lukman, was a former chairman and founder. Mr Lukman, who served under late President Umaru Yar’adua, died in July 2014.


When he held sway as minister, Mr Lukman was exposed as having a stake in the company while also supervising the oil ministry, in a clear case of conflict of interest. The defunct 234NEXT newspaper ran series of stories on the scandal.

Reports said the company owns subsidiaries in various African countries of which Nigeria is one of them.

The major owners of Afren are various institutional investors and mostly banking and asset management groups, quoted on the London Stock Exchange as AFR. The company, a British firm, operates in Nigeria through its Nigerian subsidiary.

JP Morgan Asset Management Holdings, Blackrock, HSBC and AXA are said to own shares in the company, including other banks.

Alongside Mr Lukman, Constantine Ogunbiyi and Egbert Imomoh are two other individuals believed to have ownership stake in the firm.

The company has since gone into receivership.

On Wednesday, Messrs Shahenshah and Ullah were found not guilty on a separate charge relating to a management buyout of another of Afren’s business partners.



But in a detailed disclosure seen by PREMIUM TIMES, they were both found guilty of one count of fraud by abuse of position, contrary to sections 1 and 4 of the Fraud Act 2006; one count of money laundering, contrary to section 328 of the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002; and one count of money laundering, contrary to section 329 of the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002.

They were acquitted, however, on one count of fraud by abuse of position, contrary to sections 1 and 4 of the Fraud Act 2006 and the SFO said sentencing has been scheduled at Southwark Crown Court for Monday 29 October at 10.00am.

Oriental Energy

Oriental Energy Resources Limited, according to details on its website, was founded by the Chairman, Mr Indimi, in 1990. In September of that year, the company was awarded OPL 224 by the Federal Government of Nigeria, with a mandate requirement to acquire a minimum of up to 1000 km of seismic data and to drill at least three exploratory wells. Work began on OPL 224 in 1991 as the company entered into a Technical Services Agreement with DuPont Nigeria Ltd, acquired the committed 2D seismic survey as well as drilled four wells including the Ufon discovery well. This continued until the Nigerian Department of Petroleum Resources gave an approval to convert OPL 224 to OML 115 on 20 May 1999, as a result of the successful work done on the Block.


In early 2000s, the growth of Oriental Energy proceeded quickly. Ebok marginal field (May 2007) and Okwok marginal field (2006) were awarded to Oriental Energy Resources Limited from ExxonMobil’s OML 67, through a Joint Venture Agreement (JVA) between the Nigerian government and ExxonMobil under the Marginal Fields Scheme, as a compensation for the loss of acreage to ExxonMobil Equatorial Guinea.

The company said it had had strategic alliances with Addax Petroleum (Okwok), Nexen E&P Services Nigeria Ltd. (OML 115), and Energy Equity Resources Oil & Gas (OML 115).

In 2008, Oriental Energy announced its Technical Services Agreement with Afren Energy Resources to appraise the Ebok Field and the partnership expanded with Afren signing a JVA with Oriental Energy and Addax for the development of Okwok (2009), as well as Afren signing a JVA with Oriental Energy and EER for the exploration and appraisal of OML 115 (2010). The company says it is currently producing an average of 19, 000 barrels of oil per day from 27 producer wells and has produced over 60 MMbbls from inception to date.

The company’s chairman, Mr Indimi, is in-law to President Muhammadu Buhari. In 2016, Mr Buhari’s daughter, Zahra, got married to Mr Indimi’s son, Ahmed Indimi.


Following the conviction of the two officials, it is unclear whether Mr Indimi’s Oriental Energy has any case to answer in the deal. The oil firm’s official contact could not be immediately reached Wednesday night.

It is however unclear whether the case is on the radar of Nigeria’s anti-graft agencies. PREMIUM TIMES’ efforts to reach the spokesperson of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, also proved abortive Wednesday night.

PDP Berates APC over Fabrications Against Atiku, Obi

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says the combination of its Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar and his running mate, former governor Peter Obi has been well-received by Nigerians across board, contrary to spurious publications being sponsored by the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The party said the APC, and the Buhari Presidency, having failed to stop the emergence of Atiku Abubakar as Presidential candidate; having failed in their attempts to smear him with unfounded allegations, have now resorted to attacking our vice Presidential candidate and trying to create the impression that he is not well received in some parts of the country. 

The PDP is already aware of how the APC has paid millions of naira to hack writers to spin negative narratives with a view to create an impression of disagreement and bad blood among our leaders and members across the northern and southern divides, who have since aligned with the Atiku/Obi ticket. 

The PDP and majority of Nigerians are aware that the APC and the Muhammadu Buhari Presidency have been jittery since the emergence of Atiku Abubakar as our Presidential candidate, a disposition that heightened with the choice of Peter Obi as his running mate, hence their frenzy to cause confusion within our fold.

The PDP restates that the combination of Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, with their internationally acclaimed forthrightness, hard work, ingenuity and managerial competencies, guarantee a prudent and result-oriented administration that will liberate our nation from the economic shackles which the wasteful, incompetent, and deceptive APC administration has plunged our nation into.

Furthermore, the Buhari Presidency and APC’s unrelenting resort to fabrications and personal attacks against our candidates instead of presenting their claimed achievements and programmes to Nigerians, confirms that they have nothing to offer as they have been trending on false performance claims and propaganda.

On our own part, the PDP, as a Pan Nigerian and performance-oriented political party, will never descend to the shallows with the fading APC and the Buhari Presidency, but focus on how to salvage our nation from the economic hardship, acute hunger and starvation as well as the daily bloodletting that have become the order of the day under the President Buhari administration.

Nigerians have gone through enough pain and anguish under President Buhari and no amount of smear campaign and personal attack on our candidates will ever whittle their resolve to vote in Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi with their proven political will and commitment to the welfare of Nigerians.

The Peoples Democratic Party has condemned President Buhari’s statement where he said Nigerians “who feel they have another country may choose to go.”  



The PDP described the statement as unpresidential, defeatist and characteristic of what it called failed leadership. With the statement, the party said the President spoke like someone who had lost sense of responsibility towards his citizens.



The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Kola Ologbondiyan, in a statement in Abuja on Wednesday, said President Buhari, in saying that Nigerians, “who feel they have another country may choose to go”, had further confirmed that “he is completely insensitive to the plight of our citizens and has no solution to the myriad of problems his incompetent and disorganised administration has caused our nation.”  



He described the President’s comment as “unfatherly” and a direct slap on the sensibilities of millions of Nigerians, who he said, had been painfully bearing the economic hardship, hunger and starvation which he said was allegedly caused by President Buhari’s administration.  



Ologbondiyan said these were the problems that were forcing Nigerians to embark on what he called suicide missions and slavery as survival options. He said, “Such comment is a spit on the graves of thousands of compatriots killed by marauders in various parts of the country, while the Buhari Presidency and the All Progressives Congress remained aloof without decisive actions to end the carnage and bring the perpetrators of the bloodlettings to book.

Quote:The Governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu, has reacted to allegations that he was in cahoots with some governors of the All Progressives Congress to remove the party’s national chairman, Adams Oshiomole.

While denying any involvement in any attempt to remove the former Edo State governor, Mr Akeredolu accused Mr Oshiomhole of exhibiting incompetence in the handling of the party’s recently concluded primaries across the country.

In a statement by his Senior Special Adviser on Special Duties and Strategy, Doyin Odebowale, Mr Akeredolu said APC primaries exposed the incompetence of Mr Oshiomhole. He described the exercise as a “political charade” and a revelation of “a shocking proclivity towards banditry and impunity.”

He asserted that recent events had justified his opposition to Mr Oshiomhole’s election as party chairman.

A group of party members staged a protest at the national headquarters of the party in Abuja on Tuesday alleging that Mr Akeredolu and other “conservative” governors were planning to remove Mr Oshiomole and scuttle the efforts of the party towards winning the 2019 general election.

The group pointedly described the Ondo State governor as a mole in the APC, whose recent actions could result in Buhari losing Ondo State.

The crises in the APC followed the outcome of the conduct of the governorship and national assembly primaries across the country, where the National Working Committee seems to have undermined the powers and influence of the governors.

A number of governors protested against the final list of candidates approved by the Oshiomole-led NWC, and had called on President Buhari to intervene to reverse the trend.

Mr Akerdolu is particularly livid over the failure of some of his preferred candidates to make the list of candidates to be fielded by the party in the Senate and House of Representatives, despite being in firm control of the party machinery in the state.

Mr Akeredolu said those who feel aggrieved reserve the right to demand justice, including calling for Mr Oshiomhole’s removal.

The governor, however, restated his commitment to work “assiduously” for President Muhammadu Buhari’s re-election, who he said is loved by the people of Ondo State.

Referring to the protest in Abuja on Tuesday, Mr Akeredolu described the organisers of the protest as “opportunists,” and denied that he led governors of Ogun, Kaduna Adamawa and Ekiti States against Mr Oshiomhole’s leadership.

He said he found the report laughable and distracting, adding that as a fiercely independent personality, he was not about to change his attitude to please any person or a group of persons.

“There is no truth in the whole contrivance. The governor has been pre-occupied with matters of governance in Ondo State for which he was elected,” the statement said.

Mr Akeredolu recalled his “noble interventions” as Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) president at critical moments in the cause of the “progressives”, including in restoring Mr Oshiomhole’s stolen mandate.

“The governor had expressed preference for someone else during the contest for the office of the Chairman of the Party,” the statement further read.

“He did not hide his opposition to Mr Oshiomole’s aspiration for the simple reason that the leadership of a party, especially the one just emerging from a merger, should distance itself from egregious and inherently destructive narcissism.

“Recent events seem to justify this position as prescient. Only sycophants will fail to see the obvious. Mr President would not have expressed worries over the crises in the party if everything had gone on smoothly.

“The handlers of the mob strive in vain to set the lresident against certain government functionaries considered antagonistic to their pernicious scheme for dominance.

“Their devious plot to outsmart those perceived as opposing their expansionist tendency compelled them to take desperate measures. Anyone endowed with an attitude of sobriety should have seen the need for calm.

“Rather than retrace their steps and display genuine contrition, their desperation pushes them to embrace measures capable of not only hurting the party, but, regrettably, the president, whom they pretend to love so much.”

Mr Akeredolu said it was ludicrous that anyone would consider him a conservative.

“Those who collected varying and humongous amounts as fees from aspirants during the last grandiose charade called primaries and submitted names dictated to them by a cabal, notorious for capturing political power for unbridled pillage, should be bold to explain their real motives to the people. They should be honest enough to deal with the issues,” the statement added.

“Events, which took place across the country during the political charade, have exposed not only sheer incompetence on the part of the national leadership of the party, but painfully, it has revealed a shocking proclivity towards banditry and impunity.

“It is becoming clear, increasingly, that party leadership at that level is seriously challenged in terms of capacity for serious engagements.

“Arakunrin Akeredolu, SAN, does not need to move from ‘North’ to ‘South’ to collect signatures from victims of electoral heist. He was in Ondo State throughout last week.

“He was at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife, to deliver a lecture on restructuring a few days ago. He is at presently in Canada on a working visit.

“Only the mob and their hirers can explain the imagined movement from North to South. However, those who feel aggrieved reserve the right to demand that justice be done. If this includes the removal of Mr Oshiomole, so be it.

“May we seize this opportunity to reiterate the fact that the people of Ondo State are favourably disposed to the second term bid of Mr President.

“Our people are unique; they are unwavering in their support for justice. They alone determine what is in their best interest at all times. The President is loved by the people of Ondo State.

“All of us shall work, assiduously, for the President’s victory at the polls next year. We do not need any band of mendicants ready for hire to remind us of this sacred patriotic duty.”

Amen.” He’s given us the mandate to evangelise the world before He returns. In Luke 19:13, He said, parabolically, “…Occupy till I come”; that means keep working; keep preaching; keep winning souls.
We’re the bearers of His righteousness; His light in a dark world. We must take the light of the Gospel to men and women around the world, as a witness to all nations (Matthew 24:14). We can’t afford to be weak, lukewarm, or quiet. We must maintain the glow and passion of the Spirit, and keep preaching the Gospel in the wisdom and power of God. Yes, we’ll face oppositions; there’re many adversaries; there’s a dark realm over this world and in this world, which we’re set against. But none of these should deter us from preaching the Gospel.

We must have the same mind with the Apostle Paul; read his inspiring conviction and resolve to preach the Gospel: “And now, behold, I go bound in the spirit unto Jerusalem, not knowing the things that shall befall me there: Save that the Holy Ghost witnesseth in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions abide me. But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God” (Acts 20:22-24).


Remember, this glorious Gospel which has been committed to our trust is God’s saving power that unveils His righteousness, eternal life, and destiny for all mankind; it’s worth living for, and if need be, dying for. So, refuse to give in or cower under any pressure, adversities or oppositions; keep winning souls.

Tuesday, October 16, 2018, will remain evergreen in the history of Nsu Clan in Ehime Mbano local council area of Imo State and the Anglican Diocese of Okigwe South.
 
It was the day the three-year old Frank Iwuchukwu, was saved from an abandoned 100 feet borehole, close to the chancery of St. Paul’s Cathedral, Ezeoke Nsu.
 
Preaching the homily during a thanksgiving service, arranged by the Diocese, in honour of the boy, Bishop David O. C. Onuoha, said it was a harrowing experience that lasted for about 23 hours.
 
The rest of the story is better told by the Bishop:
 
“It all started the previous day, Monday, October 15, when the little boy, whose mother died about four months ago, joined his peers to the Cathedral Church for Monday class. Little Frank and his siblings are under the care of his aunty, Mrs. Christy Nzeduru, following his mother’s death.

“Frank and his fellow children, were making their way to the Cathedral Hall, oblivious that danger was lurking on their way. Weeds had covered the barren borehole, drilled about two years ago, in search of water.
“Frank, unknowingly stepped on the yawning hole and his six-year old elder sister, Agape Iwuchukwu, made frantic efforts to prevent him from falling in. She had to let go and started looking for people to assist her prevent the brother from going down. By the time people arrived the scene, the little boy was already 100 feet below the earth.
 
HOW THE BISHOP ARRIVED THE SCENE
 
“I arrived the scene on receiving a distress call from one of the priests in the Cathedral at 5.45pm. What I saw was a revival of the indomitable spirit of Ezeoke patriots, as everyone was engaged in one activity or the other, with a view to bringing the boy out alive.

“Inside the church, women were seen rolling on the floor, weeping and praying for divine intervention. Outside, young men were very busy, trying one technique or the other. Others stood by, offering one idea or the other. Children were all over the place, weeping uncontrollably. People forgot food, sleep and rest. They were all united in the effort to bring out Frank.

ARRIVAL OF FIRE SERVICE PERSONNEL
 
“We were advised that fire service was the only department with the skill to handle such emergencies. They came from Umuahia, Abia State, and Owerri. They tried their best without success.

“By 1.30am, an idea was proffered that a parallel rescue well should be dug very near to the one holding the boy. The idea was to connect the two, on reaching the level where the boy was.

HAUSAS CAME INTO THE PICTURE
 
“Our brothers from the Northern part of the country, who are reputed for this type of mission, came to the rescue, without asking for any reward. By the time I left at 2.45am, the digging of the second hole had commenced in earnest. I left the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, of Ehime Mbano Police Division, the Chairman of the local government council and the Commissioner for Science and Technology, Mr. Emmanuel Buka, at the scene of the incident.

“I returned to the scene at 8.30am to observe work was progressing speedily. The assurance that the boy was alive sustained, by constant communication with him and his regular demand for tea and biscuits, were the fuel the rescuers needed to fire on with the rescue effort.

“About 3pm, the work had gone up to 60 feet, with approximately 28 more feet to get to the level where the lad was.

THE LAST EFFORT
 
“I got information that one of those digging the well was weeping uncontrollably and I sent for him to know why. He told me of the plans to open a window between the two wells for the boy to come out, but his colleagues were not buying into the idea. When I saw the passion, zeal and conviction in him, I was left in no doubt that the time for the miracle had come. I immediately agreed with the DPO that he should be given a chance.



“The young man, Hassan, a motor mechanic, who was in Ezeoke to repair a vehicle, was also attracted to the scene. He went in, opened the connecting window and lowered a sack with ropes at the two sides and asked the boy to get into the sack and he started pulling it. After a while, there were shouts of joy, because the boy was now in the new well, ready to move to the surface. The atmosphere was charged! The young man carried the boy on his shoulders and painstakingly climbed up to the surface.

“Here was Frank alive. The doctor later confirmed that the boy had no fracture, no internal injury, no serious wound, save minor bruises on his left hand and at his back.”

“I can’t thank God enough for this miracle. I do not know what the world would have said about my husband and myself, if this boy had died!”

ENDOWMENT FUND CREATED FOR HIM
 
The Bishop announced the immediate founding of Miracle Endowment Fund. Kicking it off, the former Deputy Speaker of Imo State House of Assembly, Dr Jonas Okeke, announced automatic scholarship for the boy, from primary to university level. He also announced a N1 million donation towards the endowment.
 
Sir Ikenna Chukwuocha also announced full scholarship for the boy, to the university level. Tochi Ihekwoaba also announced scholarship up to secondary school level. Some others gave cash to boost the fund.

A fake mad woman who specializes in collecting used diaper and sanitary pads has been nabbed in Enugu.
 
The woman confessed that she sold the items to suspected ritualists.
 
According to one Henry Chidon, a Facebook user from Enugu state who shared the video, the woman had been living in their street for many years as the residents thought she’s really mad and didn’t know what she was doing until she was seen picking the awkward items on Sunday night.
 
When she was caught, the woman begged for her life as she made some shocking confessions while being interrogated by the residents.

In a trending video posted online, the woman confessed that she picks the used pampers and sanitary pads which she sells to an unknown group of men.
 
She said whenever they come with their vehicle, she loads the bag of items she has already picked in their booth before she is paid.
 
She also confessed that she has given the unidentified men many bags of the used items during the course of the business.
 
“I cant actually recollect how many bags of the diapers and sanitary pads I have sold to the men as I pick them plenty on a daily basis,” she confessed.

A young Nigerian man got more than he bargained for after he was allegedly caught pants down with a seven year old girl whom he took advantage of. 

After the shameful act was exposed, an alarm was raised thereby prompting angry residents to apprehend the suspect who was paraded in public wearing only his boxers. 

The suspect was beaten and forced to sit on the ground as the aggrieved mob surrounded him while interrogating him over the alleged crime.

The residents were divided as to what to do with the suspect before he was later taken away in a tricycle as the crowd increased. 

The Facebook user who posted video showing the humiliation of the suspect didn't give the part of Nigeria where it happened.

On Boko Haram’s vow to keep Alice and Leah Sharibu as slaves for life, Miller said: ”This means that they are likely going to keep them permanently. They are saying that they will no longer accept any ransom or rewards for them, but will likely use them for work, force them to convert to Islam, and probably rape and beat them.
“Eventually, they will probably sell them to a rich Muslim man, who will force them to marry and own them. These are all things that Boko Haram is well known for doing to young women.

“My only hope is that they are just using this to try and get more money from the government. This would mean that there is still a chance that they can be saved.”

Asked to offer words of consolation to the mother of Leah Sharibu, the ICC official said: “They miss their daughter greatly and they cannot do anything to get her back themselves.

“The only thing we can do for them is pray and advocate for Leah and their family.”

A man who was arrested and charged for a serious sexual assault has pleaded guilty just days after his attack. Akrin Akinniran, 34, was charged on Monday, 22 October with sexual assault.

Police were called on Sunday, 21 October to reports of a serious sexual assault on Lower Clapton Road, E5 in London. 

The victim, a 29-year-old woman, had exited a private hire vehicle and was walking along Lower Clapton Road. She was approached from behind before the suspect tried to speak to her.

The woman told the suspect to leave her alone and tried to walk away, however the suspect grabbed her and started kissing her neck. He then pulled the woman into an alleyway and continued to sexually assault her.

The woman was able to get away and ran to a man who was walking down the road. She asked him to call the police. As he was doing so, the suspect approached the victim and the witness and told him to hang up the phone and stop calling the police.

As the suspect was coming closer the woman screamed and the suspect ran off from the scene.

Officers arrived and collected CCTV footage from a fast food restaurant and took the woman to an east London police station.

On Monday, 22 October, Akinniran self-presented himself to an east London police station after seeing pictures of him circulating on social media which had been taken by a witness. He claimed that he was innocent and gave a different account of events from that night.

Officers searched the property where he was staying and found the identical items of clothing worn by the suspect in the photographs.

Later that day, he was charged with sexual assault and remanded in police custody to appear at Thames Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 23 October where he pleaded guilty.

As many as three people have been feared dead as a car plunges deep inside the Agbarho river in Delta state.

No fewer than three persons have been reportedly drowned as vehicle carrying five passengers plunged into the Agbarho River along the East-West Road in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State.
The incident was said to have occurred during a downpour on Tuesday.

This is coming barely a month after a similar incident occurred, which claimed the lives of three persons who were returning from Bayelsa State.
Two of the five passengers were said to have survived the accident.

At the time our correspondent visited the scene of the accident on Wednesday, local and professional divers were still battling to recover the bodies of the passengers that were drowned in the accident.
One of the deceased was identified as Omamode Ojegba, in his early 40s and said to be the campaign Director General of the Delta State ADP Governorship Candidate, Frank Esanubi.

A friend to one of the victims who did not want to be quoted said the occupants were returning from a political meeting in Kwale when the accident occurred.
However, as at Wednesday when the vehicle was recovered, the bodies of the three victims were yet to be found.

When contacted, the state commandant of the FRSC, Rindom Kumven, said he has not been briefed about the incident.

Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, embattled National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), said on Tuesday that Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State was blackmailing him so that he would succumb to the governor’s selfish desires.

The governor had, on Sunday, led a delegation of leaders from Ogun State to the official residence of the President at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, over the ongoing controversy concerning who would fly the flag of the APC in the state governorship election in 2019.

Those who attended the meeting included the Alake of Egbaland and Chairman, Ogun State Council of Obas, Oba Aremu Gbadebo; the Olu of Ilaro and paramount ruler of Yewaland, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle, and a former Minister of State for Education, Senator Iyabo Anisulowo.

The national leadership of the party had endorsed Dapo Abiodun, who is from Remo, as the party’s candidate while Amosun was supporting the candidature of Adekunle Akinlade, from Yewa.

There were newspaper reports that during the meeting with the Ogun State leaders, the President issued an ultimatum to Oshiomhole to ‘clear the mess’ which emanated in the wake of the governorship primaries in some state chapters of the party and Ogun State.

Amosun also accused Oshiomhole of conniving “with a cabal in Lagos” to write fake results after the party’s primaries which produced Dapo Abiodun as the governorship candidate.
However, speaking in a chat with Daily Independent yesterday, an aide of Oshiomhole said the “the National Chairman is surprised by the statements in the media that he was given a matching order by President Buhari to clear the mess arising from the primaries, especially in Ogun State.”

According to him, the news is a figment of the imagination of the sponsors as Oshiomhole was not in attendance when the President hosted the leaders from Ogun State.

The aide said: “There was nothing like that. The report was sponsored by Governor Amosun in his desperate attempt to ensure he has his way at all cost. Oshiomhole was not even present at the meeting the President had with traditional rulers from Ogun state.

“Amosun was the one who told journalists that that was what the President said during the meeting. There was nothing like that. Rather, the President told Oshiomhole to be firm, insist on due process and resist any form of impunity.

“His claim that Oshiomhole connived with a cabal in Lagos is totally false. If Oshiomhole had connived with the said cabal in Lagos and his candidate emerged the winner, would he be making these accusations?”

A man was humiliated by an angry commercial sex worker over payment disagreement after hours of pleasure.

Wife of the the lecturer accused of raping late Elizabeth Ochanya along with her son, reportedly claimed she didn't know what was going on under her nose for five years.

13-year-old Ochanya, died in Benue State from battle with Vesicovaginal fistula (VVF) and other health complications after years of alleged sexual abuse by her aunt's husband and son.

The suspects, 51 year old Mr Andrew Ugbokolo, the Head of Department, Catering and Hotel Management at the Benue State Polytechnic and his son, Victor Inalegwu Ogboja, a final year student of Animal Production at the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi, are being accussed of consistently molested Ochanya since she was 9. Mr Ugbokolo was arraigned before a court in Makurdi for criminal conspiracy and rape.

He was released on bail. However, activist Ukan Kurugh disclosed that the lecturer was rearrested by the police on Tuesday, at the polytechnic premises. He was rearrested on charges of culpable homicide.

The governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje, who was caught on tape receiving bribe in hard currency from contractors, has been conferred with ‘Best Governor in Infrastructure Development’ award by LEAD Innovation.

The Northern Youths Leaders Forum (NYLF) has called on the presidential candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, to reconsider his choice of Peter Obi as running mate, if he hopes to enjoy the total support of the north and win the 2019 general elections.

The group, which says it serves as the umbrella body for 46 northern youth organisations, with over six million members, equally threatened to mobilize massively against the PDP if Abubakar sticks with Obi as his deputy.

National chairman of the northern group Elliot Afiyo made this known in Abeokuta on Tuesday while speaking with the media.

Afiyo, saying that the body had been instrumental to the electoral victories of successive presidents since 1999, including the incumbent president, Muhammadu Buhari, stated that NYLF played a critical role in reconciling former president Olusegun Obasanjo with Atiku, who was his vice president.

The group, he added, had with Obasanjo on Monday night to make its position known on the matter.

He explained that, apart from the ruckus Obi’s choice has caused in the South East, which according to him is largely responsible for the impending defection of Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu from the PDP, Obi is viewed as anti-North and a major sponsor of Igbo separatist group Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) by northerners

Afiyo further added that over 70 percent of Emirs and other traditional rulers in the north will not support Atiku’s choice of deputy, maintaining that the PDP would fail to produce the next president should the party eventually go with the Atiku/Obi ticket.

“Atiku is an experienced politician, and he knows what happened and, as a northern Nigerian, he cannot ignore the group. I have spoken to almost all the South East governors and they told me that they remained in the PDP because of their governorship elections and after their governorship elections they will vote somewhere not PDP,” he said.

“And for us to ignore those stakeholders, it is political suicidal; so we must agree with that fact.
That was what we told Obasanjo yesterday – that as far as we want to Atiku to succeed, he has no alternative than to drop Peter Obi, and with the contention between Peter Obi’s group and the Ike Ekweremadu group, it is not political convenient again to pick a running mate from the South East.
Because whichever group you pick from, the other group will work against them.

“Then, in the North, we consider Peter Obi as anti-north. This is no sentiment, apart from the way he treated the northerners when he was the governor of Anambra state, we consider him as a bonafide member and major sponsor of IPOB.

“In fact, 70 percent of emirs and traditional rulers from the north will not support Peter Obi as the vice president.”

Afiyo was of the view that it would not be politically wise for Atiku to pick his running mate from the South West which, according to him, remains a strong base of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), advising the PDP to turn its radar instead to the South South.

The NYLF leader suggested that either Rivers State governor Nyesom Wike or his Bayelsa State counterpart, Seriake Dickson, should be considered as Atiku’s prospective running mate, if the opposition party is serious about unseating President Muhammadu Buhari next year.

“We don’t work on sentiment. As I have told you before, our group staked our lives in 2015 for Buhari. Personally, I was placed under house arrest for two weeks throughout the extension of the presidential election in 2015. I was fighting with the hope that Buhari would change things, but there is a cabal and Buhari is completely caged.

“Also, mind you, Atiku is not a saint; anyone that becomes president, there must be a cabal. So we need a vice president that will tell the cabal no and Peter Obi doesn’t have the courage and boldness to be the vice president to challenge the authorities. We need checks and balances,” he said warning that “If Atiku fails to heed our warning, then APC will win. Buhari will win hands down because we cannot support a failure, we will work for APC.”

Mohammed Yau Baire, has landed in police net for allegedly demanded sex from a married woman with promise of getting her admission into a University.

The former lecturer of Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK), was arrested following allegation of demanding sex from a married woman, Hajiya Halimat Abubakar Bashiru, before she could gain admission into the state-owed citadel of higher learning, according to a report by Blueprint. 

Narrating her experience to newsmen on Wednesday in Tudun Wada, Hajiya Bashiru said: “The whole episode began when I went to look for admission at the Nasarawa State University, Keffi.

“After my husband introduced me to one of his brothers at the university, he asked me about the course I wanted to study and I told him computer science, after which he requested for my phone number for easy communication. But after that, Dr. Baire started calling me saying that he is interested in having me as a lover.

“Before I told my husband, he now asked me out and I told him to meet me at my house so if he has anything to tell me, he can say it before my husband, but he insisted that we should meet.

In his reaction, Baire said he regretted his action, adding that it was the handwork of the devil.

“Actually, I approached her that I wanted to be in love with her despite the fact that she is married to a prominent person that I know. I told her that all I needed was for her to succumb to me and then she will have the admission at the university,” he said.

Cross River Government in partnership with the Federal Neuro Psychiatric Hospital, Calabar, provide succour to the Ogoja mentally deranged family following intense search and rescue.

The family of Mr. & Mrs. Ben Ogar popularly known as the Ogoja mentally deranged couple has been rescued following weeks of intense search by a team from the Cross River State Government and Federal Neuro Psychiatric hospital, Calabar, Cross River State.

According to his wife, Mr. Ben and his wife lost their means of livelihood about the same time six years ago while still resident in Abuja with their two kids, and what followed was a mental disorder leading to the Mr. Ben relocating himself and his wife to his country home in Ogoja where he opted to stay in a shanty rather than his father's house. His family rescued his first set of kids from him when he started showing signs of this disorder, and six years of roaming the streets of Ogoja produced the three kids he was rescued with.

Doctors confirmed Mr. Ben to be suffering from a mental disorder, while his wife is only having the 'folie a deux' syndrome as a result of her husband's ideation. The children, two girls and a boy, are in very stable condition and are responding to treatment very well.

The Honorable Commissioner for Health, Dr. Inyang Asibong, said the erstwhile mentally deranged family are in stable condition and are respondting well to treatment. The family will be rehabilitated and reintegrated into the society with continuous medical care and social welfare, she concluded.

Meanwhile the Honorable Commissioner for Women Affairs in the State, Mrs. Stella Odey, highligted that the family are also being offered some psycho-Social support in addition to the Medical Care already being provided by the State Government. While her counterpart from the Ministry of Sustainable Development and Social Welfare, Mr. Oliver Orok, noted that the State Government had already provided feeding and accommodation to the couple with adequate medical scare.

The Permanent Secretary of the State Ministry of Health, Dr. Joseph Bassey, asserted that the State Government are partnering with Federal Neuro Psychiatric Hospital to ensure the family receive all the medical services they require.

Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, on Tuesday said the present administration has done better in power generation, transmission and distribution than the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) did in 16 years of its administration.

A statement sent to PREMIUM TIMES Tuesday from the minister’s media office said Mr Fashola made this known while speaking at the Nigeria-South Africa Chamber of Commerce (NSACC) breakfast forum.

The minister explained that the achievements of the present government would be better felt if compared with the ‘realities’ it met on ground when it took over the reign of power in 2015.

“If you do not define your goal against your reality, progress will be difficult to recognise,” Mr Fashola said. “As to where we were in 2015, power generation was averaging 4,000 MW; transmission was averaging 5,000 MW and distribution was averaging 3,000 MW.

“As to what we promised, I stated in my very first public briefing in November 2015 that contrary to previous practice, we were committing to a journey; first of getting incremental power, with the plan to proceed to steady power, and ultimately get uninterrupted power.

“I made it clear that our intention was to improve your power supply experience gradually rather than discuss the megawatts as quantum of power, and that any reference to the megawatts would be measuring milestones of our progress in the journey of incremental power.”

Three years after the present government took over, he said, records show that from 4,000MW, generation has reached 7,000MW, averaging incremental generation of 1,000 MW every year since 2015.

Similarly, the minister said transmission has reached 7,000MW from 5,000MW, averaging 666 MW of incremental transmission every year and distribution peaked at 5,222MW in January of this year, from about 3,000 MW in 2015, averaging 740 MW incremental distribution capacity every year.

Although Mr Fashola said the nation has “moved the needle forward” and there is progress, the government has not finished its work, he said.

“How far we can go depends on what those of you who will decide who forms the next government do when you vote,” he said.

You will compare our record of three years with what we met after the previous 16 (sixteen) years. If you compare our performance record in three years with the 16 – year record of the previous administration in the areas of Generation, Transmission and Distribution you will get the following instructive results: Incremental Generation of 1000MW per year against 4000MW in 16 years which amounts to 250MW per year; Transmission capacity improvement by 666MW per year against 5000MW in 16 years which amounts to 312.5MW per year ; and Distribution capacity improvement by 740MW per year as against 3,000MW in 16 years which amounts to 187.5MW per year.

“You will also compare the resources available to us in the last three years, with what was available over the previous 16 years. In addition, you will have to ask yourself whether you are running your generator for longer or shorter periods today, than in 2015; and also whether you are spending more to buy fuel for your generator than three years ago.

“Those of you who are well-meaning and right thinking know the answers.”

The former Lagos State governor added that feedback from consumers also reflect the impact of the results being underscored, citing instances of consumer testimonials from Magboro, Mowe and other parts of the country.

Mr Fashola explained, however, that there are people still unserved or not well served, adding that “the good news is that there is a mechanism put in place by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to monitor complaints by Consumers with a total of 166,543 complaints resolved out of 262,096 from January to June 2018.”

The minister said Nigerians will also have to compare this government’s plans for tomorrow with the plan of the others, in relation to prospects for the future.

Mr Fashola disclosed that by end of this year, another 945 MW will be ready for supply from the following power plants: Azura (450MW), AFAM IV (240MW), Kaduna (215MW) and Kashimbilla (40MW). In addition, he said, between 2019 and first quarter of 2020, Zungeru (700MW) and Okpai II (450MW), both totalling 1,150MW, should come into operation.

“These do not include about 7,000MW of installed but inoperative power plants that are constrained either by gas supply or transmission capacity or both, about which action is being taken,” he said.

“It does not include independent power plants now under construction in nine federal universities with a plan to scale to 37, neither does it include 15 independent power projects targeting major markets now under construction to power 85,000 shops and small businesses.”

On the transmission side, he explained that the government has finalised a 10-year transmission expansion plan from 2018 to 2028, just as it has recovered 690 containers of power equipment abandoned at the ports as part of the legacy of the previous 16 years, and deployed them to the sub-stations they were originally meant for.

Currently, “there are not less than 90 transmission sub-station projects at different stages of construction,” he added.

On distribution challenges, the minister said 11 companies that distribute power were sold to private investors and it is their responsibility, not that of government, to supply distribution equipment like breakers, transformers and meters.

“So, if there is any problem there, as indeed there are, it is private businessmen who should solve this problem,” he explained, adding that their ability to respond partly depends on what government does.

The minister explained further that there is 7000 MW of power operationally available but distribution can only take 5000. He said government has engaged with Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) to offer the rights to take the 2,000MW and enunciated the Eligible Customer Policy for consumers who take up to 2MW and beyond.

Quote:A 23-year old man, Taiwo Olatokunbo, from Ogun State was arrested on 20th October, 2018, for allegedly killing a man simply identified as 32-year old Christian Williams over N200 beer.

The suspect was arrested following a distress call received by the Igbeba Police Division from one Temitope Adedayo, who runs a beer parlour at No. 4 Ijagun Road Ijebu Ode. She reported that at about 3pm on the said date, the suspect came to buy a bottle of More beer worth N200 but refused to pay. This led to an argument between her and the suspect consequent upon which the deceased who happened to be her customer intervened and asked the suspect to pay for the beer. She narrated that the intervention of the deceased infuriated the suspect who then broke a bottle and stabbed the victim on the right elbow joint.

Upon the report, the acting DPO of Igbeba Division, SP Onah Lawrence, led his men to the scene where the said Taiwo Olatokunbo was promptly arrested. The victim was quickly rushed to State Hospital, Ijebu Ode, for medical attention but gave up the ghost while receiving treatment.

Meanwhile, the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Iliyasu, has ordered the immediate transfer of the case to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for proper investigation and prosecution of the suspect.

The Lord Jesus has all authority in heaven and earth. He said in Matthew 28:18-19, “...All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.” By that statement, He bequeathed His authority to us, the Church. Everything that exists in this world and beyond is subject to His Name. And you live in His Name!

The Name of Jesus means much more than an identity; it refers to His authority and His character. Being born again, you were born into Christ; you inherited His Name; therefore, you have His authority and His character. You function in His place. Understand this: when you talk, move or act, it’s literally as though Jesus is the one talking, moving, and acting! All of heaven, hell, nature, living, and non-living things, respond to you as they would to Jesus! What a blessed reality!

I encourage you to do a personal study on the Name of Jesus: what that Name represents to the Church! It’s the Name above all names; the Name that opens every door! That’s the Name given to us to live by, and use as an instrument. The Master gave us the power of attorney to use His Name—to act in His stead as His full, legal representatives.

You have heaven’s respect; you can go anywhere and be heard; you can pray to God Almighty and He’d answer, all because of Jesus. In His Name, you have authority over devils; you can speak with new tongues, take up serpents, if you drink any deadly thing, you’ll not be hurt, and you can lay hands on the sick and they’ll recover. Blessed be God!

There’s no demon, sickness or trouble that can stand against that Name! His Name is greater than cancer; it replaces maimed limbs; it opens blind eyes and unstops deaf ears; it raises the dead. In His Name, you’re more than a conqueror, a champion forever; eternally fruitful and productive. What a Name!

TOPIC: HUMILITY - A SIGN OF SPIRITUALITY

SCRIPTURE: Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up. James 4:10

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Limitation in humility is the limitation of destiny.

Humility is the quality of having a modest view of one's importance. Humility means being devoid of an exaggerated lifestyle.

Now, there is a connection between humility and spirituality. Spiritual people are humble people, and until your humility is in place, your destiny is not in view. It is the limit of your spirituality that determines the limit of your humility, and the limit of your humility determines the limit of your destiny. Thus, limitation in humility is the limitation of destiny.

Now, two ways a person can be imparted with humility are:
1. The humility of spirituality
In this, the virtue of Jesus Christ Who is the emblem of humility flows on a true child of God willing to possess the same virtue.

2. The humility of adversity
This is the humility that is imparted by adversity or calamity. For example, when King Nebuchadnezzar refused to humble himself before God, adversity took him to the wilderness and imparted him with humility (Daniel 4:1-37). The same was spoken of the prodigal son. He became so incapacitated by poverty that he even desired pig’s meal and could not get any to eat; his mentality got adjusted and humility was imparted (Luke 15:11-32).

My counsel is, embrace the humility of spirituality in order to escape the humility of adversity. You shall make it, in Jesus’ Name.

REMEMBER THIS: Limitation in humility is the limitation of destiny.

1. Do not wait until adversity humbles you, be humbled through spirituality.
2. Always realize that what you are and all that you have were given to you by God; so, avoid the pathway of pride and arrogance.

MESSAGE

Impatience is the younger sister of doubt because when someone is impatient, the fellow may not be able to operate under the divine time-table. Impatience can cause a person to doubt the integrity of the Ever Faithful God. The devil uses impatience as a tool to sow doubt in the minds of believers, so much so that some even begin to doubt the infallible word of God. For this reason, James 1:4 says:

“But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.”

The blessings attached to being patient are many. For example, in our memory verse, the Holy Spirit reveals that a patient fellow will lack nothing good. This may sound foolish to the carnal mind, but it is the truth of God’s word. The carnal mind is turned to believe that by being impatient, more can be achieved and more can be amassed, but this is a lie f the devil.

In today’s Bible reading, impatience almost destroyed the faith of Mary and Martha. As a matter of fact, they indirectly indicted Jesus of their brother’s death because He came to them at a point they considered to be too late, after He had received their message notifying Him of Lazarus’ sickness. John 11:21 says:

“Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.”

What an indictment! By this comment, they doubted the extent to which Jesus actually loved their family. This probably accounts for why Jesus wept in John 11:35, after Mary repeated the same accusation (John 11:32). It is dangerous to be a “microwave Christian” who always expects things to happen when you feel they must happen. A microwave Christian is like an infant who reacts to and cries for everything that causes discomfort. The Holy Spirit describes the state of such Christians in 1 Corinthians 3:1-2. Some brethren feel offended and therefore decide to leave a church when the promotion they believe they are due for is not forthcoming from the church authorities. Some others feel victimized when they are transferred from their station of comfort, even resorting to blackmail in some cases. Some even give God an ultimatum on when a miracle must “drop”, or else they won’t serve Him anymore. All these examples may sound unbelievable, but they are true life experiences. Beloved, it is time to grow up from the stage of infancy. Good expects you to become not a meat eater but a bone cracker. May the Lord cause you to grow in Jesus’ Name.

Father, please help me to grow in patience and keep me standing for You till the very end in Jesus’ Name.

A bizarre video of a giant python falling through the ceiling into a bank as staff were having a meeting has surfaced online.
The slithering snake found its way into the ceiling of the bank in China and startled staffers during their meeting when it suddenly fell from the ceiling above, the Shanghaiist reported Friday.
Surveillance footage of the eerie incident showed staffers standing around an office, in a bank in Nanning, Guangxi, when the 6.5-foot python fell from the ceiling.
The staffers immediately ran away as the snake appeared to slither off-camera.
Local wildlife authorities were reportedly able to wrangle the reptile.

Quote:The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party has debunked the rumour making the rounds that the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, is planning to leave the party.

Rather, it said there was nothing in the ruling party, the All Progressives Congress, that could attract Ekweremadu into its fold.

Instead of losing members, the PDP said aggrieved members of the APC would defect to the former ruling party soon.

There had been unconfirmed reports that Ekweremadu was planning to defect from the PDP to the APC for allegedly losing the Vice-Presidential ticket of the party to a former Governor of Anambra State, Mr Peter Obi.

Ekweremadu was believed to have positioned himself for the slot, but was said to have been disappointed when the PDP Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, announced Obi as his running mate for the 2019 presidential election.

As part of the strategy to clinch the VP position, Ekweremadu was also believed to have rallied round delegates from the South-East to vote for Atiku at the party’s national convention held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, about two weeks ago.

To show his disaffection, Ekweremadu, whose name had already been submitted by the PDP to the Independent National Electoral Commission as a senatorial candidate from Enugu State, was said to be considering leaving the PDP for the APC.

However, the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr Kola Ologbondiyan, debunked the rumours, saying Ekweremadu “will never leave the PDP.”

Ologbondiyan said, “Why would someone like the DSP (Deputy Senate President ) consider joining the APC?

“This is a party that the highest court in the land just described as being stupid. Who will leave a rebranded party like the PDP and join such a party that has been described in such a derogatory word?

“Forget the rumour. Dr Ekweremadu is with us and will never join a party like APC that is enmeshed in eternal crisis.”

Asked if the party had met with Ekweremadu to determine if he was actually planning to leave or not, Ologbondiyan said that the “party has a way of holding meetings with its officials and others”, adding that “such meetings are not held on the pages of newspapers.”

Aggrieved All Progressives Congress members of the House of Representatives have resolved to dump the party, following their inability to secure return tickets for 2019, findings by The PUNCH indicated on Tuesday.

Investigations showed that the resignation would be done in batches, beginning from Wednesday (today) on the floor of the House in Abuja.


One member, who has been prominent in the negotiations with the party for a return ticket, Mr Musa Soba, categorically told The PUNCH that the members would leave.

He will be among the first batch to dump the ruling party today.


Soba, who is from Kaduna State, stated, “We have decided to resign our membership of the APC.

“However, this will come in batches.

“My resignation will come up through a letter to be read on the floor of the House tomorrow (today).”

Over 70 lawmakers had petitioned the appeal panel of the APC after they lost their tickets at its last primary election for the February general elections.

While some of the members had complained that the process was “manipulated” to favour some preferred contestants, others alleged that the party approved direct or indirect primaries in one instance, only to make a U-turn the next moment.

But findings indicated that the panel resolved the petitions of about eight members in their favour. Over 62 others lost the appeal.

When the final list of candidates was submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission in Abuja on Thursday last week, The PUNCH gathered that the majority of the aggrieved members were not captured.

Those confirmed to be on the list were the Chairman, House Committee on Financial Crimes, Mr Kayode Oladele, Mr Isiaka Ibrahim, Mr Baderinwa White, Mr Aminu Malle, Mr Goodluck Opia, Mr Mayowa Akinfolarin, Mr Lado Abdullahi and Mr Jimoh Oladele.

The aggrieved members have been meeting since the final list was submitted to take a decision on their political future.

The PUNCH learnt that the meetings were rounded off on Tuesday (yesterday) with the position that the affected members would leave the party in batches, starting from this morning.

Recall that two weeks ago, President Muhammadu Buhari had summoned the aggrieved lawmakers to a meeting at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in a bid to pacify them.

He had reportedly called the meeting following threats issued by the members that they would either dump the APC or work against it in 2019.

But, the presidential intervention did not do much to help the fate of the lawmakers.

One of them, Mr Ayodeji Joseph, had earlier informed The PUNCH that he protested the outcome of the primary election in his area because of manipulation.

Joseph, who represents Apapa Federal Constituency in Lagos State, stated that he even won the election, expressing surprise how his opponent was declared the winner.

He spoke more, “I won in the three wards. Initially, there was a disagreement over the method of accreditation of voters, whether it was to be by membership card or not.

“Eventually, there was election in only three out of the 10 wards and I won. How another fellow was given the ticket, I don’t know.”

However, the APC in a last ditch effort to get some of them to have a change of heart, has intensified efforts to assuage the bruised egos of some of the aggrieved lawmakers.

A top-ranking member of the party’s leadership who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue said, “We are talking and will continue to talk.

“The truth is that what we are dealing with is in most cases local issues. There were those the party felt should be given the right of first refusal in terms of return tickets but they had issues with their constituents.

In such cases, if you force such a candidate on the party and the people in such areas, you are sure to lose the elections.

“So, in such cases, we had to go for the lesser evil and allow the people will prevail. When we win the election, there are enough appointments to go round.”

When contacted, the National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, said the party had not given up on its members who were aggrieved as a result of the fact that the outcome of the primaries fell short of their expectations.

He said, “Immediately after the primaries we started reaching out to our aggrieved members. You will recall that even last night, (Monday) some of our aspirants from Kwara State were with the President. The meeting was part of efforts to heal wounds and that is going on all over the country.

“Everywhere we have such issues; the party is rising up to it. We do understand that conflicts are a necessary part of politics and it is the ability to reconcile people, ensure that people who disagree are brought to a roundtable and given an opportunity to first and foremost lay bare whatever the grudges are.

“And that you can get people to listen to you that is the first comfort you can get from your party. The APC has a structure to listen to anybody who has an issue and everyone will be given an opportunity. As party members, the greater good is our ultimate goal.”

He, however, didn’t go into specifics about what plans the party had in store for such members.

Let us strengthen the Coalition for Peace

Address by Malam Nasir El-Rufai, Governor of Kaduna State, at the Emergency Meeting of the Kaduna State Council of Chiefs held at the Council Chambers of Sir Kashim Ibrahim House on Tuesday, 23rd October 2018

PROTOCOLS
Let me begin by commiserating with you all on the sad abduction of Agom of Kachia. This is the second time a royal father is being so treated. We are outraged by this disrespect for tradition. May the souls of his three deceased aides rest in peace. Amen.

1. On behalf of the Kaduna State Government, I wish to acknowledge the efforts of your Royal Highnesses in the cause of peace in our state. In particular, we are grateful to their Royal Highnesses, the Emir of Zazzau for his sterling leadership and counsel, recommending that we invite you here today. We are grateful that you are able to come even at short notice, and even after rescheduling it from the previous date of Friday.

2. As you are aware, there have been breaches of the peace since Thursday, 18th October 2018, when unrest broke out in Kasuwan Magani. The state government promptly imposed a curfew in the area. The loss of lives was staggering- at least 55 corpses were recovered, and the damage to lives and livelihoods considerable. A brazen crime was committed. We owe the victims justice, and our state respite from the impunity of those who have arrogated to themselves the authority to wantonly violate lives, livelihoods and the rights of others.

3. The necessity to apply the law vigorously is illustrated by the panic and anxiety that spread into our capital city and environs as people spread vile rumours on Sunday, 21st October 2018. Hoodlums exploited the situation to engage in further criminal activity and to violate the rights of other citizens. The aftermath of the disinformation and resulting panic led to the death of another 22 citizens, injuries to 44 persons and destruction of property within Kaduna metropolis. Some of the injured have been discharged, but 34 others are still receiving medical attention.

4. The Kaduna State Government was therefore compelled to declare a 24-hour curfew in the metropolis to stem the proliferation of false rumours, prevent the spread of chaos and to enable the security agencies to restore calm. We have gone round affected areas, visited hospitals, interacted with communities and counseled against reliance on unsubstantiated information.

5. I wish to inform your Royal Highnesses that the government is constantly reviewing the situation with the leaders of the security agencies. Yesterday, senior government and security officials went around Kaduna metropolis, Kujama and Kasuwan Magani to further reassure and calm our people. We also visited Kachia, where we met and commiserated with the family of HRH Agom Kachia whose release from abduction we are all working and praying for.

6. Your Royal Highnesses, we all have a supreme obligation to overcome the legacy of strife in Kaduna State. We are not the only diverse place on this planet. And we must not hold on to a legacy of hate and division. The first ethno-religious clash in the state which happened in Kasuwan Magani in 1980, led to the loss of our innocence. Since then, it appears that a constituency has developed which believes that violence pays, and is convinced that violence has no consequence for the perpetrators.

7. It is time to firmly persuade them otherwise. It is time for a powerful coalition for peace to speak frankly and support firm actions against those who menace the right of our citizens to live in peace wherever they choose, to freely practice their faith anywhere and to pursue legitimate livelihoods without let or hindrance. No group or individual will be allowed to veto or constrain the rights that the Constitution has guaranteed.

8. The pace of prosecution in our courts is hampered by the heavy case loads of our judges. We are working to secure the approval of the National Judicial Council to expand the bench in Kaduna State with 20 additional high court judges. We also clearly need to have more police and other law enforcement officers on the ground to provide assurance to the law abiding, and to deter criminals.

9. In this wise, the Kaduna State Government is working with the Kaduna State Police Command to establish new divisions in Narayi and Sabon Tasha. We are grateful to the police authorities for also agreeing to establish a police division in Kasuwan Magani. The state government and the relevant local government councils will provide the buildings to house these new police formations. More military Strike Force bases will also be established.

10. We can all agree on the need for more security assets and faster dispensation of justice in our state. But our communities have to enlist in the coalition for peace. Beyond boots on the ground, and a phalanx of security agents, the ultimate guarantee of peaceful coexistence is the willingness of individuals and our communities to live in peace. As said in the state broadcast last night, harmony in our land requires a commitment to obey the law, and to use only peaceful and lawful means to resolve differences.

11. Your Royal Highnesses, our communities have an obligation to keep the peace and to report and expose criminal elements. The Kaduna State Government intends to encourage this by vigorously enforcing the various provisions of the Riots Damage Law of 1958, the Collective Punishment Law of 1915 and the Peace Preservation Law of 1917. These laws impose costs on communities that permit violence in their midst, obliging community members to be charged and levied monies for the cost of repairing damage done during episodes of violence.

12. Everyone, particularly our royal fathers, needs to be aware of their stake in preventing disorder and upholding peace. The government will shortly be providing details of the enforcement process of these extant laws. We cannot compromise on the imperative of securing our communities from criminals and rascals. Enough is enough!

13. In situations of unrest, it is common for traditional leaders to disclaim any control over unruly youth. It is an excuse we can no longer accept. Where significant sections of a community disdain the counsel or authority of their traditional ruler, it imperils the rationale for keeping the traditional institution, and the occupant of the office.

14. The Kaduna State Government will continue to advance the cause of peace on many fronts. As a government committed to promoting equality of opportunity, we intend to help promote prosperity by rebuilding and modernising markets in places impacted by conflict. The market in Kafanchan is already being rebuilt. We shall be extending this to the overstretched or destroyed markets in places such as Zonkwa, Zangon-Kataf, Kasuwan Magani and Kujama. The goal is to ensure that the new markets will accommodate not only the existing and previous shop owners, but also others who aspire to and are able to own shops. Perceptions that there are insurmountable barriers to securing trading places in markets will be erased in the new, expanded and modernised markets. The designs for these markets will include space to host police formations.

15. It is sad that many of the places of worship that were destroyed in crises since 2011 are yet to be reconstructed. We need to achieve closure on resettlement of displayed persons, payment of compensation to 2011 victims and the reconstruction of destroyed properties. We have therefore approached the Federal Government to provide the balance of 53% of assessed compensation to enable victims to rebuild their lives, and for all places of worship to be restored.

16. Your Royal Highnesses, you all have a fundamental role to play as pillars of peace and lawful conduct. The Kaduna State Government appreciates your significant contributions and wishes you all success in serving and leading our people. We look forward to hosting these meetings every quarter to sustain our efforts to promote unity, peaceful coexistence and progress in our state.

17. In conclusion, I wish to update you on the resolutions of the Security Council meeting that was held earlier today:

a. Selective variation of the curfew as appropriate in certain parts of Kaduna metropolis, and relaxation in Kasuwan Magani and Kujama.
b. KSTA vehicles with Police/NSCDC to escort outside travellers passing through Kaduna, and from train stations, airports, motor parks and entrances into our city.
c. Police to work with other relevant agencies to revive the Task Force to enforce the proscription of operations of commercial motorcyclists.
d. Re-establishment of checkpoints and military patrols along Kachia Road to enhance the security of that axis.
e. Review of the activities of youth groups and community development associations to ensure that they are conducive to the promotion of peace and harmony.

The Carolina Panthers enter an offseason of uncertainty unlike any other in the 23-year history of the franchise following their 31-26 wild-card loss to the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.

”None of us have been through something like this, of course. It doesn’t happen often in the NFL.”
Panthers coach Ron Rivera at his final news conference of the season that ”it’s going to be different; it’s going to be weird” not having Richardson around.
While the league will surely push to keep a franchise in Charlotte, where it has successfully sold out all but two games during its history, there is no telling if the new owners would consider moving the team. Rivera hopes the Panthers stay in Charlotte.
”I think this is a great area and I think we have shown that we (are) supported by the community,” Rivera said.
Panthers interim general manager Marty Hurney got emotional Monday as he shook hands with players as they left the locker room.
He tried to hold back tears when asked about the end of the Richardson era.
”Sure, it’s more emotional,” said Hurney, who previously worked for the Panthers from 1998-2012. ”Anytime the finality of losing a playoff game is hard to take. And then when you have these other things it’s hard.”
The impending sale of the team is just one of many uncertainties surrounding the Panthers this offseason. Here are some others:
FRONT OFFICE QUESTIONS: While Rivera received a two-year contract extension through 2020 last week, the Panthers front office remains up in the air. Hurney was re-hired by Richardson to serve on an interim basis last summer but his contract expires June 30.
Hurney said Monday he would like to stay on, saying ”I love what I’m doing right now.” Rivera and several players also threw their support behind Hurney coming on in a full-time role again.
REPLACING ANOTHER COORDINATOR: Rivera seems pretty certain he will lose a defensive coordinator for the second straight offseason with Steve Wilks scheduled to meet with the Giants, Lions and Colts for vacant head coaching positions.
Wilks is viewed as a favorite in New York, where former Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman is now calling the shots. Rivera said if Wilks leaves he’s leaning toward promoting an assistant from inside the organization.
”I feel really good about the guys that we have in place and being able to replace Steve,” Rivera said. That means linebackers coach Al Holcomb, defensive line coach Eric Washington and defensive backs coach Curtis Fuller would be the top candidates.
PEPPERS UNDECIDED ON FUTURE: The future of defensive end Julius Peppers remains uncertain, too. Peppers, who turns 38 this month, said he will take some time before making a decision whether to return for a 17th season.
Peppers had a successful season with 11 sacks and two forced fumbles in a situational role and served as a valuable mentor in the locker room to players such as Mario Addison. ”He can play as long as he wants, clearly Tramon Williams Jersey ,” said defensive end Charles Johnson.
ROSTER CHANGING: While linebacker Thomas Davis said ”the window is still open” for the Panthers to win a Super Bowl, the reality is this is getting to be an old football team. Peppers is not alone in the long-in-the-tooth category.
Safety Mike Adams will be 37 next season, Davis 35, Olsen and center Ryan Kalil 33, Johnson 32, running back Jonathan Stewart 31, and safety Kurt Coleman and nickel cornerback Captain Munnerlyn will have turned 30. All but Munnerlyn are starters. Olsen thinks the core of the team will remain.
”This is a team that has been very competitive and I don’t see why anyone would come in and mess with that,” Olsen said.
DEEP THREAT NEEDED: Clearly one of the biggest needs for the Panthers this offseason will be finding some help for Cam Newton, particular a deep threat at wide receiver.
While last year’s second-round pick Curtis Samuel and Damiere Byrd helped fill that role at times this season, neither could stay healthy leaving the Panthers without a player who could stretch the defense.
The Panthers let wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr. walk last offseason in free agency and it bit them again Sunday as Ginn caught an 80-yard touchdown pass in the Saints’ wild-card win.

No sooner did Jon Gray get into trouble in the first inning than he got out of it. It was a pattern he would emulate throughout the night.
Combining power pitching with sleight of hand, Gray struck out 12 in seven dominant innings, Nolan Arenado homered in Colorado’s six-run fourth, and the Rockies won their fourth in a row by beating the Miami Marlins 11-3 on Friday night.
After fanning the first batter he faced, Gray gave up a single to Brian Anderson and a double to J.T. Realmuto – but he came back to strand both.
”I think you saw in that first inning where two runners got on, Jon gets out of it with no problem,” Rockies catcher Tom Murphy said. ”That was huge for Jon. It kind of set the tone for him and made him realize nothing was going to stop him tonight.”
It was Gray’s 12th career 10-plus strikeout game and the fourth this season. He had at least two strikeouts in five of his innings, including striking out the side in the sixth. Gray (7-7) walked none and withstood a solo homer in the third by Derek Dietrich, who drove a 2-0 pitch the opposite way into the left-field bleachers.

Nigeria's minister for Transport, Rotimi Amaechi has revealed that the Abuja-Kaduna rail line cannot run faster than 90Km/hr because the ministry does not want locomotives to kill cows.

PoliticsNGR learned that Amaechi made this comment while speaking on the complications the Nigerian government faces while making concessions.

He broke down the various problems being faced by the Country's rail system adding that Nigeria has more than enough to transport via rail.

In his words;

"The reason why we want to go back to narrow gauge is because between Lagos and Kano, we have 30 million tonnes of cargo. Even if you do three rail lines, it cannot be enough.

It took us 14 days to move coaches from Lagos to Abuja; everyday we go and ask, how far, they say we are near Ogun state… 14 days.

But if it were rail, the same day, it will get to Abuja. The kind of construction we are doing is 120 kilometers per hour (Km/h), it is a speed train.

We are doing 90km/h with Abuja to Kaduna, the reason we are doing 90km/h is because there are cows everywhere, and we don’t want to kill cows. The other day they tried 100 and they killed how many cows, and they said ‘you people should replace the cows you killed.

From that day, I have said let us maintain the 90km/h; at 120km/h you get to Kaduna in one hour. You can work in Kaduna and live in Abuja. It was initially one, but now, we have done four locomotives with 14 coaches."

Two personal security guards who attacked and robbed Innoson Motors lawyer, Professor McCarty Mbadugha have been captured, PoliticsNGR has gathered.

The guards made the confession after their arrest by the Lagos State police command.

A statement from the Spokesman for the Command, Chike Oti reveal that investigations are still ongoing.

“The Lagos State Police Command is investigating two security guards, Kingsley Okon Asuquo, 19 and Isaac Edet, 18, assigned to guard a Lagos lawyer, Prof. McCarty Mbadugha, from Strongcity Security Services but ended up attacking and robbing the same man that hired them for protective services,” it reads.

The operation was a follow-up to information received on October 13, 2018, from a source that armed bandits held one Barrister Joseph Mbadugha aka Professor McCarty Mbadugha, hostage in his office at JohnVic Igbanogo street, Lekki Phase one, Lagos; that the armed men were seen wearing Strongcity Security Services uniform.

Police said that based on the information, operatives from Maroko Police Station and FSARS Ikeja, jointly mobilized to the scene, and gave the bandit a chase and one of them, who gave his name as Isaac Edet, was nabbed at the scene.

“During interrogation, he mentioned and led detectives to arrest his partner in crime, one Kingsley Asuquo.

Interestingly, both suspects are staff of Strongcity Security Services attached to the victim. They claimed the victim does not pay their salary as at when due, hence they planned with others at large to rob him,” the statement said.

Items recovered from them are a bag containing laptop computer, cash sum of forty thousand Naira (N40,000.00), three cheque booklets, one iPhone-6. All these items were recovered from the thieves in the course of investigation.

The Governor of Ogun State, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, has attacked the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu, and a former governor of the state, Aremo Segun Oshoba, over alleged complicity in electoral fraud in the state.

Amosun accused the two party leaders of “conniving with a cabal in Lagos” to write a fake result which produced Dapo Abiodun as the party’s candidate for the 2019 governorship election.


Amosun said this in an interview shortly after swearing-in the new Chief Judge of the state, Mosunmola Dipeolu, in the Governor’s Office chamber in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta on Monday.

He alleged that the silence of the two party leaders, who were aware of what transpired in the state with respect to the primary, smacked of complicity.

Amosun said, “The President already knows there was no election in Ogun State. He knows that they just went to Lagos; wrote all results, and that what they did was fraud.

“If the National Working Committee or the national chairman said there was any election in Ogun State, it was all fraud. That is what I said.”

He insisted that the only primary which held in the state was the one which Adekunle Akinlade won to become the party’s governorship candidate.

The governor said, “Mr President already knows there was no election in Ogun State other than the one we held.

“The issue of Chief Osoba and Asiwaju and co, what we said was that there was a definite silence from their end, and silence means consent. You can record me and publish it in your newspapers.

HBO to premiere documentary – Stolen Daughters – on Girls Kidnapped by Boko Haram

To expose to the world the horrors going on in Northern Nigeria, HBO is premiering the documentary “Stolen Daughters: Kidnapped by Boko Haram.”
The documentary is to premiere on Monday, October 22, and will show interviews with the 82 Chibok Girls rescued by the Nigerian government in 2017.
The documentary shows how the girls are adapting to life after their difficult and traumatic experience living with their abductors for years.
The documentary will also feature the “Forgotten Girls” – the hundreds of girls abducted by the terrorist group who somehow managed to escape captivity. These are the girls whose stories have escaped the government and the media.
The girls share stories, none of them like those of the Chibok girls, as these ones have enjoyed none of the privilege, like free education, afforded to the Chibok girls.
The documentary was written and produced by Karen Edwards and directed by Gemma Atwal and is an HBO collaboration with BBC2 and ARTE France

Cameroon’s Paul Biya, 85 wins 7th Term as President

Cameroon’s Paul Biya and Africa’s oldest leader at 85, will serve a 7th term as president after winning elections in the country, BBC reports.
Biya won his 7th term in an election said to be marred by violence and low voter turnout, with just 5% of voter showing up in the country’s 2 Anglophone regions, according to the International Crisis Group.
Biya, according to the official results of the polls, won 71.3% of the votes, with the nearest opponent being Maurice Kamto of the MRC/CRM who won 14.2%.
85-year-old Biya had deployed riot police to the major cities of Yaounde and Douala in case of protests after the opposition’s calls for a re-run were rejected.
The Anglophone regions in Cameroon have been marred by violence lately, with videos circulating showing the country’s military killing civilians and burning down homes.

Victim of Racial Abuse on Ryanair Flight Speaks: “I feel really depressed about it”

Delsie Gayle, 77 a physically challenged woman was flying back home to London from Barcelona aboard a Ryanair flight when a man on her row started ranting at her, saying she should move seats.
Gayle was unable to move out of her aisle seat quickly enough to let the man sit down in his window seat, and then he began using abusive and racist remarks on her.
He was then told she was disabled to which he responded: “I don’t care whether she’s f****** disabled or not – if I tell her to get out she gets out.”
Later on in the argument, the white man said: “Don’t talk to me in a f****** foreign language you stupid ugly cow.”
When another passenger told the man he was being abusive, he responded: “I will carry on as far as I can with this ugly black bastard.”
“I was shocked, nobody ever said those words to me. I travel a lot, I go to Canada…and no-one has every said those words to me,” Gayle told ITV.
“I feel really depressed about it. I go to my bed and say, ‘What have I done?’ I haven’t done anything (for him) to attack me because of the colour of my skin.
“I feel very low, because he pay his fare to go on holiday, I pay mine, so why does he abuse me for that due to the colour of my skin? He does it with me and he gets away, he’ll do it to somebody else,” she added.
Speaking further, Gayle said: “I don’t eat, I can’t sleep. I’m just lying down there, I don’t eat. I’m just lying down there and think I’ve never gone through this with all my travelling.”
Gayle adds that the airline has not contacted her.

When a flight attendant came to address the situation, he asks if she’ll like to move to another seat and Gayle said she’ll like to sit with her daughter.
“Move her to another seat … I can’t get in while she’s sat there,” the white man interjected their conversation.
Gayle responded: “You smell. You need a wash.”
“If you don’t go to another seat, I’ll push you to another seat,” said the white man.
The woman was eventually moved to another seat.

A housewife, Sa’adatu Musa, on Monday, begged a Mararaba Upper Area Court, in Nasarawa, to dissolve her marriage to her husband, Dembe for allegedly denying her s-x.
Sa’adatu told the court that Dembe denies her s-x, as he only has s-x with her once in four months.
She said that as a result of their inconsistent sexual life, she wasn’t getting sexually satisfied.
Sa’adatu said that she married Dembe sometime in 2015 and that the union did not produce any child.
She pleaded with the court to dissolve the marriage, saying that there was no longer love in the union. She said that nothing could bring them together again since he could not satisfy her sexual needs.
The respondent, Dembe, however, denied the allegations.
The judge, Mr Ibrahim Shekarau, adjourned the case until October 29 to allow the parties to settle out of court.

Barely four days after 35-year-old Ayegunle Adekunle was arrested for allegedly defiling a 3-year-old girl in Otta area of Ogun State, another randy man has been nabbed for committing same atrocity.
The suspect, 38-year-old Abiodun Ojo, was arrested at Magbara, a village near Idiroko, a border community in Ipokia Local Government Council Area, also in Ogun State.
Abiodun’s arrest followed his alleged defilement of a six-year-old girl.
The suspect who, according to the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, was a co-tenant with the victim’s parents.
He was said to had lured the girl into a bush path under the pretence of wanting to send her on an errand and forcefully had carnal knowledge of her.
“It was the shouting and crying of the girl that attracted the attention of local vigilante operatives who rescued the girl and placed a distress call to Police at Idiroko division. The DPO, CSP Aloko Amodu, quickly led his men to the scene and promptly arrested the suspect who had been severely beaten by angry mob”, Oyeyemi stated in a press statement made available to Crimepuzzle.
The PPRO further said that both the suspect and the victim were taken to the hospital for medical attention. According to him, the state Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Iliyasu, had ordered the immediate transfer of the case to the Anti-Human Trafficking and Child Labour Unit of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) for further investigation and prosecution of the suspect.

An Upper Area Court sitting in the Mararaba area of Nasarawa state, is set to dissolve the marriage of a couple after a wife sought for divorce over s-x denial.
A housewife, Sa’adatu Musa, on Monday, begged a Mararaba Upper Area Court, in Nasarawa, to dissolve her marriage to her husband, Dembe for allegedly denying her s-x.
Sa’adatu told the court that Dembe denies her s-x, as he only has s-x with her once in four months.
She said that as a result of their inconsistent sexual life, she wasn’t getting sexually satisfied.
Sa’adatu said that she married Dembe sometime in 2015 and that the union did not produce any child.
She pleaded with the court to dissolve the marriage, saying that there was no longer love in the union. She said that nothing could bring them together again since he could not satisfy her sexual needs.
The respondent, Dembe, however, denied the allegations.
The judge, Mr Ibrahim Shekarau, adjourned the case until October 29 to allow the parties to settle out of court.

Donald Trump touts 10 per cent tax cuts for the middle class
U.S. President Donald Trump, speaking to reporters at the White House as he left on a campaign trip to Texas, said on Monday his administration planned to produce a resolution within two weeks calling for a 10 percent tax cut for middle-income people.
“We’re putting in a resolution sometime in the next week or week-and-a-half, two weeks,” Trump said. “We’re giving a middle-income tax reduction of about 10 percent. We’re doing it now for middle-income people.”
Trump said on Saturday his administration was studying a tax cut to be rolled out some time around the beginning of November just before the Nov. 6 congressional elections, even though lawmakers are out of town campaigning and Congress is not in session.
Trump‘s fellow Republicans are seeking in the elections to hold on to their majorities in the Senate and House of Representatives.
The president clarified on Monday that the proposed tax cuts would be unveiled before the election but would have to go through Congress afterward

“We won’t have time to do the vote” before the election, Trump told reporters. “We’ll do the vote after the election.”
The president, who was traveling to Texas to campaign for Republican U.S. Senator Ted Cruz, said the latest tax cut plan was not meant to help businesses but was for middle-income earners and would be “on top of the tax decrease that we’ve already given them.”
Trump first raised the tax cut proposal in the same week the U.S. government ended the 2018 fiscal year with a $779 billion deficit, as previous Republican-led tax cuts squeezed revenues. The deficit figure was the highest in six years.
Last December, Trump signed into law the largest tax overhaul since the 1980s, which slashed the corporate rate to 21 percent from 35 percent and temporarily reduced the tax burden for most individuals as well.

U.S. authorities held immigrant children in a ‘tent city’ for months: court filings
U.S. authorities have held some immigrant children who entered the country illegally and without a parent in a temporary “tent city” in Texas for months, violating a 20-year-old court order on how long minors can be detained, according to court filings by civil rights lawyers and immigration advocates.
More than 500 children have been housed in tents near Tornillo, Texas since August, and 46 have been held there since June, according to a Friday court filing in Los Angeles federal court by civil rights organizations and advocacy groups representing migrant children.
The filing opposes a government request to exempt the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR), which runs the tent city as a branch of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), from oversight by a court-ordered monitor.
Under the terms of a 1997 court settlement known as the Flores agreement, U.S. authorities must quickly move immigrant children out of prison-like detention centers, either releasing them to guardians or placing them in state-licensed shelters with access to schooling and legal counsel, generally within 20 days. Tornillo is not such a licensed facility.
The Tornillo tent city was opened in June as a temporary emergency measure as the number of children in ORR custody rose sharply.
Neither ORR nor the Department of Justice immediately responded to requests for comment. In an Oct. 12 fact sheet, HHS said the temporary shelter was necessary because of the number of unaccompanied minors in its care and so that “the Border Patrol can continue its vital national security mission to prevent illegal migration, trafficking, and protect the borders of the United States.

The tent city houses no children who were separated from their parents. The facility has 3,800 beds and housed about 1,500 children as of Oct. 12, according to a government fact sheet.
“None of the children at Tornillo were receiving schooling or regular mental health care, among other benefits to which they would be entitled if they were placed in a licensed shelter,” said a court filing from Leah Chavla, a human rights lawyer who visited Tornillo on Sept. 24.
The administration of President Donald Trump has made cracking down on illegal immigration a central theme of his presidency.

On Monday the president vowed to reduce or curtail tens of millions of dollars in U.S. aid to three Central American nations, and he called a caravan of migrants bound for the United States a national emergency.
The administration has regularly complained that the Flores settlement has limited its ability to hold illegal immigrants until they can be deported.
The court filings also show the percentage of children at Tornillo who were released to sponsors “dropped significantly” in August from June, according to the court filings.
The Department of Homeland Security said in September it planned to withdraw from Flores.

Air Canada flight damaged by passing plane just after it landed at New York airport

Airport officials in New York say an Air Canada flight that had just landed at the city’sLaGuardia Airport late Monday afternoon was damaged as it sat on the taxiway by another passing plane.
Rudy King, spokesman for the Port Authority New York and New Jersey, says the Air Canada jet was stationary on the taxiway when an American Eagle plane operated by Republic Airlines that was attempting to turn clipped its wing.
King says both planes continued to their gates under their own power.

Saraki, Dogara Commend Nigerian Lawmakers

The President of the Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara, have underscored the important roles the National Assembly has played in helping to save Nigeria from collapse.

The two leaders, who spoke yesterday at the convocation ceremony of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS)/University of Benin Post Graduate Programmes for the 2015/2016 and 2016/2017 academic sessions held at the National Assembly premises, said lawmakers in the eighth assembly especially have committed themselves to improving the lives of Nigerians.


According to Saraki, who is the Chairman of NILD governing council, the core legislative oversight and representative functions of the legislature is to contribute to the quality of governance.

“There is no gainsaying the fact that the core legislative oversight and representative functions of the legislature provide an essential contribution to the quality of our democracy and governance as a whole.

“In the eighth National Assembly, the legislature has played a greater role in policy formulation and has engaged more robustly with the executive at the various stages of policy formulation. This stems from our conviction that the task of nation-building must be a collective one, and this sometimes requires sacrifices on the part of the individual.

“Many of the legislative measures we have pursued since 2015 have been targeted at driving productivity, easing access to finance, creating jobs and improving livelihoods. Legislative proposals in this area are focused on Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) particularly in reducing regulatory burdens and easing access to capital, with the objective of having a large number of sustainable fast-growing small and mid-size businesses. We have also taken legislative action to tackle tax avoidance and evasion in order to encourage compliance with tax obligations by all persons.

“We have shown commitment to the need to develop our education sector, with a special focus on improving the quality of primary and secondary education, which has suffered from lack of investment and infrastructural provision. Our vision is to see to the attainment of 100 per cent literacy rate for all Nigerian children aged 12 and below. The Senate has also amended the Universal Basic Education (UBE) Act to ensure that the two percent budgetary allocation to Universal Basic Education Commission by the federal government is increased to three percent,” Saraki noted.

Also listing aspects of basic healthcare and human capital development as areas that have attracted the attention of the lawmakers, Saraki attributed the successes recorded by the legislators to the professional permanent staff and legislative aides, describing them as the “main resource for continuity and sustainable change in a legislature is the legislative bureaucracy.”

Also, noting that the National Assembly has helped save Nigeria from collapse, Dogara said to attain stable, strong and effective governance in Nigeria, the National Assembly must receive priority attention in terms of capacity building.

Arguing that the legislature is the true face of democracy, especially in maturing democracies such as in Nigeria, where it serves as the stabilising force with robust constitutional powers to check-mate the executive misuse and abuse of power, Dogara said it is preferable to build healthy and strong institutions like the legislature than strong personalities.

He said: “It is our considered opinion that if there is any institution of government that should receive priority attention in terms of capacity building, it is the legislature. This is because the legislature is the true face of democracy. In our maturing democracy in this country, the legislature is the stabilising force as it has robust constitutional powers to check-mate the executive misuse and abuse of power which occasionally rears its head.

“Credit must be given to the Nigerian parliament, which has continued to make laws, perform its representative functions and make robust use of the power of oversight in order to preserve our hard-won democracy and achieve good governance.”

According to Dogara, “A key factor in moving from a nominal democracy to democracy that delivers development results for people is an effective legislature that holds the executive to account, especially in developing countries burdened by weak governance structures like Nigeria, and lamented that whereas much work has been done on strengthening executive leadership, not much attention has been paid to systematically building the capacity of the legislature to effectively contribute to national development.

Labour Strike: ANN, ADC Berate FG, States

The Alliance for New Nigeria (ANN) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) have berated the federal and the state governments for reneging on the agreement reached with the organised labour over the issue of new minimum wage.

This Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) had threatened to commence an indefinite strike from November 6 if both the federal and state governments fail to meet their demands on minimum wage for Nigerian workers.


Reacting to the development yesterday in Abuja, the National Publicity Secretary of ANN, Mr. Akinloye Oyeniyi, decried the horrible state of Nigerian workers who he described as the engine room of the nation governance mechanism.

According to him, “It was devastating reading the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Ayuba Wabba, and that of the United Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero, saying in a press statement on Sunday that the unions will be going on indefinite because of federal government’s stance on new minimum wage for workers.”

Oyeniyi said that the federal government shouldn’t be threatening no work no pay in a negotiation which is yet to end.

He stated: “These are workers being owed months of salary arrears and never threaten ‘no pay no work’. The government should have placated the workers that it could only increase the minimum wage from the current N18,000 to N24,000, instead of claiming no amount was agreed with the labour representatives at the tripartite committee meeting.”

“Before possible solution is reached, we beseech the labour unions to reconsider their stance to save the nation from hardship that may accompany the said strike.”

On her part, the National Publicity Secretary of ADC, Ms. Yemi Kolapo said that the federal government should not play hide and seek game on this matter and find a way of reaching a compromise with the labour unions.

She said, “You don’t play hide and seek with matter like this, today they will tell you they have met with all the conditions of labour, just as a form of propaganda, tomorrow something else will happen…”

Kolapo added that, “If a former labour leader can be a frontline leader in the ruling party, then it’s ironical that things like this will be happening under his watch.

“So, it means people do not really practice what they preach and people have always said that the Buhari government does not even have an agenda for Nigeria, they don’t know how to go about the economy, much less this is a body of labour put together.”

Kolapo noted that why she doesnt subscribe to strike, but added that the labour unions have a good reason for deciding go embark on this strike.

“I don’t see the Buhari government settling it, I don’t, they will promise them but they won’t fulfil their promises. Let the government wake up to its responsibility.”

A Pastor from Nkulumane suburb, Zimbabwe poisoned his two daughters before killing himself in South Africa where the family was based.

Pastor Precocious Mpofu, 36, and his daughters Shalom (11) and Panashe (7) were laid to rest at Luveve cemetery in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe on Saturday.
Mpofu allegedly forced his two daughters to drink a drainage cleaning chemical before also taking it in Yeoville suburb, Johannesburg, citing marital problems.

The deceased, who was a pastor at Prophet Blessing Chiza’s Eagle Life Assembly and his wife, Ms Chido Chipangura, had recently separated but she was still living in South Africa.

Their bodies arrived in Zimbabwe on Saturday.
Mpofu’s neighbour from South Africa who travelled to Zimbabwe for the burial described the pastor as a gentleman who was devoted to his wife and may have failed to come to terms with rejection.
“The pastor was too devoted to his wife. He loved his children and wife so much but it was embarrassing in church when rumours went around that she was having extra marital affairs.

They had since separated and we heard she had moved on but he just could not accept it,” said the neighbour who declined to be named.
Chipangura family members said they were yet to come to terms with the death of the children.
“As a family we are very sad. We have lost two children and we are still in mourning. We thank the family, friends and neighbours for their support at this time,” said a family representative who spoke to The Chronicle.

The late Pastor Mpofu allegedly left a suicide note in which he stated that he was facing a lot of problems most of them in his marriage.
He also allegedly said there were some people who were stalking him and mentioned four people together with their contact details.
Pastor Mpofu however, did not give reasons why the individuals were stalking him.

The now deceased also sent a lot of messages to his family on the fateful day although he did not mention his intentions to kill his children and commit suicide.
He however, gave a hint when he directed how his property should be shared.

The family members told The Chronicle at their family home in Nkulumane suburb last Friday that from the information they received, the tragedy could have happened on Monday, October 15, between 2PM and 4PM after Pastor Mpofu had just returned from collecting his children from school. The deceased’s father, Mr Sipho Mpofu, said:

“I am reliably informed residents at his apartment saw him carrying each of the daughters on his shoulders into their flat at around 2PM. At 2:40PM he sent his sister here in Bulawayo a WhatsApp message saying one of his daughters, Shalom, had died. Exactly 10 minutes later, he sent another message saying his second daughter had also passed on. This puzzled his sister who was trying to call him to understand what exactly he was trying to say.”

He said when she tried to text him back, messages were no longer being delivered and the sister phoned Ms Chipangura telling her to go and check on her husband as he was texting strange messages.
“Ms Chipangura dashed to the flat only to find three bodies. The kids’ bodies were neatly laid in bed between blankets while Precocious’ body was on the floor,” he said.

WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns left wrestling fans stunned when he broke character to reveal he’s battling leukemia.
Reigns, whose real name is Joe Anoa’i, made the announcement on Monday’s edition of the WWE flagship show Raw. Dressed in street clothes and fighting back tears, the 33-year-old said he would be forced to relinquish the WWE Universal title and seek medical treatment.

The WWE released a statement shortly after Reigns’ announcement.

Explosive found near home of billionaire philanthropist George Soros: reports

An explosive device was found near the Bedford, N.Y. home of billionaire philanthropist George Soros, according to U.S. media reports.
A person working at Soros’ home opened a suspicious package to find what appeared to be an explosive device, the New York Times quoted the Bedford Police Department as saying. Bomb disposal specialists were called, and safely detonated the device.
ABC7 Eyewitness News reported that the case has been transferred to the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force Division.
The FBI confirmed on Twitter that it was conducting an investigation near a residence in Bedford, but said there is currently no threat to public safety.
Soros, whose Open Society Foundation has donated some US$32 billion to liberal and human rights causes, has long been a favoured target of right-wing groups and U.S. President Donald Trump.
Earlier this month, Trump tweeted that two women who confronted Republican Sen. Jeff Flake over his decision to vote for Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court were actors paid by Soros.
Last week, Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz suggested in a tweet that Soros was paying people to join the caravan of Central American refugees heading towards the U.S.
Soros’ Open Society Foundation replied to both Trump’s and Gaetz’s tweets to deny their assertions.

FG loses $2.5bn to gas flaring – Expert

Mr Chinedu Onyeizu, Chief Executive Officer, AfriPERA, an Energy and Infrastructure Policy research organisation, says Nigeria loses about 2.5 billion dollars annually from gas flaring in the country.
Onyeizu disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), in Abuja.
“ Since the 1950’s, Nigeria has been burning off its natural gas at flare points and despite efforts by successive administrations to curtail the wastage, the country loses an estimated 2.5 billion dollars each year to gas flaring as well as unattended impact of negative externalities associated to gas flaring,’’ he said
He said that the country’s natural reserves was the 7th largest in the world and the largest in Africa, adding that it was estimated that Nigeria had over 187 trillion cubic feet(tcf) of proven natural gas in reserves.
According to him, the country has an additional 600 tcf of unproven volume, 40 per cent of the proven volume is associated with gas
“ In other words, they are produced alongside oil and largely flared at location where we don’t have facilities to harness them,’’ he added.
He said that the Ajaokuta-Kaduna -Kano gas pipeline (AKK) project if well conceived would accrue to the country as the project could be transformational. (NAN)

Transport company ordered to stop taking kids to school in a driverless bus

In March, NHTSA gave Transdev permission to temporarily import the driverless shuttle for testing and demonstration purposes, but not as a school bus.
Late on Monday, the company confirmed it had voluntarily agreed to stop what it called a planned six-week pilot project one week earlier “out of deference to NHTSA.”
In a written statement, Transdev said the “small pilot was operating safely, without any issues, in a highly-controlled environment.”
The company said it believed the pilot met the requirements of the testing and demonstration project approved by NHTSA for adults and children to ride on the same route.

The same Holy Spirit will show you the way of victory; He’ll give you visions for guidance. Remember the words of the Spirit through the Apostle Paul: “…God is faithful, who will…with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it” (1 Corinthians 10:13). 1 John 4:4: “Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.” Isaiah 54:17, “No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper….” Hallelujah!

Dear heavenly Father, I thank you for the gift of the Holy Spirit, my teacher and my guide. Dangote Refinery to Boost Economic Activities in Downstream Sector, Says LCCI

The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) has described the proposed Dangote Oil Refining and Petrochemicals as a looming economic transformation of the downstream sector of the petroleum industry.

Beyond that, the group said the economic benefits of the oil refinery, when completed would have a far -reaching positive effects on the lives of Nigerians.
Speaking after leading members of the Chambers on tour of the site of the facilities, President of the LCCI, Mr. Babatunde Paul Ruwase, described the project as massive, adding that the impact on the petroleum sector would be too spectacular.

Ruwase, who led members of the chamber on a tour of Dangote Jetty, Refinery and Fertilizer plants recently in Lagos, expressed excitement over the pace of work at the Refinery and Fertilizer plants, which he described as a game changer for the Nigeria oil sector.
