BREAKING: Imo Gov, Ihedioha orders arrest of Rochas Okorocha
[Image: Rochas-Okorocha.jpg]

Imo State Government under the leadership of Emeka Ihedioha on Thursday ordered a citizen’s arrest against Sen. Rochas Okorocha, over alleged assault on a government official, Mr Jasper Ndubuaku.
The Secretary to State Government (SSG), Mr Uche Onyeaguocha, gave the order after the Chairman of the Recovery of Government Properties, Mr Jasper Ndubuaku, was allegedly assaulted at Okorocha’s residence.

Onyeaguocha said that the state had also placed Okorocha on security watch and urged Imo citizens to arrest him and alert the government whenever they found him in the state.
News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that a video, trending online on Thursday, captured some thugs beating Ndubuaku at Okorocha’s residence on Spibatt Avenue, Owerri.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Rabiu Ladodo, and SSG confirmed the incident to newsmen at a joint news briefing in Owerri.

They announced that a citizen’s arrest had been declared on Okorocha over the incident.
They claimed that Okorocha hired thugs to attack Ndubuaku, who doubles as Special Adviser to Gov. Emeka Ihedioha on Security matters.
They said that the Senator representing Imo West would be arrested and prosecuted anytime he entered the state.

Narrating his ordeal to NAN, Ndubuaku alleged that he was beaten at Okorocha’s residence and thrown into a gutter by some thugs.
He further alleged that he was first held hostage for some hours by the thugs in the presence of security men attached to Okorocha’s residence.
He said that the recovery team obtained a court order to search Okorocha’s house.
“We got a court order to recover stolen properties kept in Okorocha’s house and when we got to his house on Thursday, armed thugs attacked us.
“There are twenty government vehicles in his house, four Speed Boats, one movable crane and generator sets, which we went to recover before the incident.
“We will not give up the battle, we will go back to his house because the property belongs to Imo government,” Ndubuaku said.
Reacting to the government’s order, Mr Sam Onwuemeodo, the Special Assistant on Media to Okorocha, said the recovery committee was attacked by the former governor’s sympathisers and passersby.
He said that the recovery team went to Okorocha’s house without a court order, adding that they invaded Okorocha’s residence with no fewer than 50 thugs.

Oshiomhole is empty, has no powers – Tanko Yakassai

An elder statesman, Alhaji Tanko Yakassai, has declared that Adams Oshiomhole, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, is empty and has no powers.
Yakassai stated this while stressing that Oshiomhole has no powers to “make” members of the party win any electoral positions.

In a statement he signed, Yakassai insisted that only President Muhammadu Buhari can decide the rising of APC party members across the country and not Oshiomhole.
According to Yakassai: “Oshiomhole as the APC National Chairman, cannot make you even a member of the State House of Assembly.
“He has only the name of National Chairman. He has no powers, he is empty, the partymen know that their party leaders are empty.

“But, if Buhari says you should be this or that, automatically, you will be so, and this also applies to states where the state governors also call the shots.”
Baring his mind on the lack of respect accorded to leaders of various political parties in the country, the elder statesman advised that powers should be given back to the elected party leaders.
According to him, “Powers of political parties must be returned to the members of the party.

“You cannot rise to the position of even a messenger in a political party at the state or national level without the blessings or nod of your governor or the president.”

Unemployed man nabbed after ‘buying’ N2m car with fake bank alert

The Niger State Police Command has arrested an unemployed man, Luba Udoka Jonah, who allegedly specializes in defrauding people by sending them fake bank transaction alerts.
Jonah was arrested after trying to defraud a car dealer in Minna.

The car Dealer, Abubakar Yahaya of TK Motors reported Jonah to the Police after the suspect sent him a bank alert which did not reflect in his bank account.
According to Yahaya, the suspect came to car stand to buy a Mercedes Benz C240 model which they agreed at the rate of N2 million. He deposited N50, 000 before taking the car for test running.
However, after two days, the seller retrieved the car from the suspect following his refusal to pay the balance even though the suspect took his account details to pay the balance of N1.950 million.

Upon receiving the alert from the suspect, Yahaya went to the bank only to be told that no money had entered into his account.
This made Yahaya to report the suspect to the Police, which led to his arrest.
The suspect confirmed that he sends fake alert to his unsuspecting victims upon transacting business with them adding that this was made possible with an application which he uses to manipulate bank accounts.

He said he uses the fake bank alert to buy expensive things and leave the area immediately before the person can discover that he or she has been duped.
“There is one application I downloaded which I use to manipulate any bank account number that comes my way. I have been defrauding innocent people of their money without them knowing about it.
“I can buy goods worth millions of naira in somebody’s shop, once I complete the fake transfer, the person will get alert on the spot and I leave the area immediately.”
The command’s Public Relations Officer, Muhammad Abubakar urged the public to be discreet with their banking transactions in order to avoid falling prey to fraudsters.
He said that the case would be charged to court soon.

RHAPSODY OF REALITIES

FRIDAY, 30TH AUGUST

RELATE IN LOVE

Be tolerant with one another and forgive one another whenever any of you has a complaint against someone else. You must forgive one another just as the Lord has forgiven you (Colossians 3:13 GNB).

In today’s world, winds of intolerance are blowing strongly. It’s common to find those who can’t control their temper. Little things infuriate them and make them exhibit such anger that’s unbecoming of Christians. They’d make such comments as, “I can’t stand that brother or sister.” You could even hear their persistent complaints and whining about the Church premises: “I can’t stand this place; it’s just somehow; I don’t think I’ll keep coming to this Church.” They have people, places, and things they can’t tolerate. Don’t be that way!

But think about it: The Bible says, “By his (God’s) spirit he hath garnished the heavens…” (Job 26:13). The Holy Spirit created the whole world and beautified the Heavens, yet He’s so humble and so gracious to come live in you. In all His greatness and magnificence, He considers you qualified to be His house, His living tabernacle. In spite of your imperfections and idiosyncrasies, He still loves you. Why then should you, for whatever reason, say you can’t stand someone else? Why should you resent or find anyone repulsive?

If the Holy Ghost could come to live in you, then be humble. Emulate Him, for the Bible says, “Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us…” (Ephesians 5:1-2). Let Him be your focus. If you love Jesus, it’ll show in your relationship with others.
Our theme verse says, “Be tolerant with one another….” Be humble to accommodate and tolerate your brothers and sisters in Christ.

The Bible says no one should “...think of himself more highly than he ought to think...” (Romans 12:3). God expects you to think highly of yourself, but you’re not to exalt yourself above others.

If you found yourself exhibiting traits of resentment and intolerance, consciously re-culture yourself with the Word. Be sure to only give vent to the love of God in your life

CONFESSION

With all humility, gentleness, and patience, I relate with others graciously, lavishly expressing God’s love to my world. I’m accommodative and kind towards others, giving allowance for their shortcomings and imperfections, because the love of God is shed abroad in my heart by the Holy Ghost.

Med-View denies operation shut down

[Image: BOEING-747-400-8.jpg]Med-View

Despite its absence from both regional and local routes in the last two weeks, Med-View Airlines Plc. has denied the suspension of flight operations.
The management of the airline yesterday urged its shareholders, stakeholders, and the general public to disregard reports suggestion the suspension, saying that its unserviceable aircraft would soon return to operation.

The Guardian recently reported a temporary shutdown of operations when the airline’s only operating aircraft, B737-500, suddenly went out-of-service.

The development threw some workers into panic mode as they groan over harsh realities due to an unpaid salary that varies between three months and one year.

Med-View is the only local commercial operator on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE). But the airline has lately been in dire straits, posting at its last July annual general meeting a record after-tax loss of N10.33 billion, a 293 per cent drop from 2017 profit.

Explaining the development, the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the airline, Michael Ajigbotosho, said Med-View had not at any time informed the regulatory authority (NCAA) or other any agency nor the press that its operations were suspended.
“At this time of the year, all those concerned or involved know that Med-View will concentrate her entire operations in the inbound airlift of Hajj Pilgrims from Saudi Arabia to Nigeria.

“Our B737-500 aircraft, with registration number 5N-BQ, developed a technical fault en route Abuja a few days ago that requires engine replacement, and of which the engine has been procured and is being mounted to commence operation next week,” he said.

Ajigbotosho added that Med-View Airline operates three B737 aircraft on its domestic route. Recently, two of them – 5N-MAB and 5N-MAA – were sent for C- Check at approved Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility in Estonia, Europe, and Aero-Contractors here in Nigeria.

He said that the works were already at an advanced stage, up to 85 per cent, and expectedly, the aircraft will soon return to the domestic route.
“In the last 12 years of operation as a Hajj carrier and domestic operator, Med-View Airline is profoundly known and widely recognised for its safety consciousness, which cannot be compromised.

“Our airline is ever committed to its corporate value, which is the ability to succeed in providing the desired services for customers’ satisfaction and return on investment to shareholders,” he said.

Local airlines delay 16,426 flights in six months

[Image: Medview.jpg]Med-View Airline

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) yesterday hinted that a total of 16,426 flights were delayed in the first half of 2019, out the 30,043 flights executed by the airlines.
The figures, released by the Consumer Protection Department of the apex regulatory body, confirmed that the spate of delays had worsened.
The Guardian recently reported that the problem went overboard during the summer and salah holiday travels, with almost all flights delayed.

Besides capacity issues among the airlines, the delays were not unconnected with bad weather occasioned by the rainy season, poor infrastructure at local airports, fuel shortage, among others the airlines often tuck under “operational reasons”.
The nine operational local carriers also cancelled a total of 241 flights for various reasons.

Air Peace, which accounts for about 40 per cent of the local traffic, operated 11,889 flights and topped the chart of delayed flights with 6,359 and 91 cancelled flights.

Arik Air followed with 2,306 delayed flights and 41 cancellations out of its 5,378 flight operations.
Aero Contractors operated 3,293 flights with 2,181 delayed and 36 cancelled flights while Azman Air recorded 1,312 delayed and 12 cancellations out of the 2,711 flights operated by the airline.
Dana Air operated 2,278 flights with 1,477 delayed and 25 cancellations, while Overland had 1,248 flights with 894 delayed and eight cancellations.

Max Air recorded 2,652 flights with 1,538 delayed and 19 cancellations; Med-View Airlines Plc., 374 flights with 219 delayed and eight cancelled flights and new entrant, Ibom Air had 220 flights with 143 delayed and no cancelled flight.
Air Peace Chairman, Allen Onyema, recently said that Nigerians must understand the peculiarity of the environment and sensitivity of the business.

Onyema explained that the weather is not helpful at this period. “This is the time of the year when it rains. Just one hour delay in the morning, due to rain in Lagos, already disrupts the entire day’s operation across all the routes.

“The airport infrastructure is also not helpful. The government is just trying to do something about it and until they finish, we would keep having the challenges.”

Why Nigerians are groaning under soaring food prices

The production and consumption of food items ought to have witnessed a significant boost on the back of the Federal Government’s agricultural revolution. But, this appears not to be the case, as prices of most staples have continued to hit the roof. Experts blame the crisis on seasonal supply shortages, flooding in some parts of the country and pervasive insecurity, among others. CHIKODI OKEREOCHA, DANIEL ESSIET and JANE CHIJIOKE report

These are trying times for Nigerians. Already clobbered by myriad socio-economic challenges such as rising crime and unemployment rates, insurgency, extreme poverty, and a general economic slowdown, among others, the sudden increase in prices of food items has added a new and scary dimension to the mix.
Investigations by The Nation show that in the last few weeks, prices of most staple food items have gone up, raising fears that these staples may soon disappear from the menu tables of many Nigerians who may no longer afford them. Some of the staples affected include rice, beans, garri, semovita, tomato, pepper, and frozen foods, among others.
The Nation’s random check in some major markets in Lagos, showed, for instance, that a bag of 50 kilogrammes of foreign rice, which hitherto sold for between N13, 300 and N13, 800, has gone up to as much as N16, 000. Low budget consumers are also hit, as a derica of rice, which originally sold for N250, now goes for between N270-N300.
The price hike also affected the local rice. A rice dealer at Daleko Market, Mr Steve Adekoya, said before last week’s partial closure of the border, particularly the Seme Border, a bag of local rice sold for N13, 300, while dealers or retailers resold at about N13, 700.
He, however, said as, at Monday, August 26, 2019, it sold at the rate of N14, 500. “This is outrageous,” Adekoya charged, noting that while the Federal Government’s initiative of encouraging local rice production was a step in the right direction, it shouldn’t be at the expense of the masses who consume the product at a premium.

Listen to Adekoya: “It (the price of rice) is too high for us to bear. We want the Federal Government to intervene because the price increase is daily. There should be price control on rice. We want the price of local rice to be at most N10, 000.
Another trader in the market, Mrs Mojisola Kehinde, expressed a similar sentiment. She called on the government to come to the aid of Nigerians and local rice dealers. She acknowledged that the demand for local rice has increased, in line with the Federal Government’s push to encourage its production and consumption to grow the economy.
She, however, lamented that despite the increased demand for local rice, its price remained high compared with the foreign rice. “Our customers are complaining bitterly about the price of local rice, she complained.
Kehinde said before now, a 50 kg bag of local rice sold for between N12, 000 and N13, 500, but since last week Tuesday, the price skyrocketed to N14, 500, with some dealers currently selling for between N14, 600 and N15, 000. “What do they want us to eat?” she asked.
Also, many Nigerians who are fond of consuming frozen foods such as Turkey and chicken may be forced to either contend with the increase in the price of the products or remove them from their shopping list.
A frozen food retailer at Mafoluku, Oshodi, Mrs Joy Onwuchekwa, told The Nation that she had since run out of stock of the items, as she couldn’t buy from her suppliers. She said retailers now sell available stock at N1,500 per kilogram of Turkey, for instance. The same size of the product, a few weeks ago, sold for N1, 700.

A wholesaler in frozen foods at Ijora Olopa also confirmed that Turkey and chicken have become scarce in the market. He lamented that the situation was already affecting his business as he cannot supply to his numerous customers.
However, prices of other food items such as beans, garri, semovita, tomato, pepper, and tartashe appear not to have been affected, as their prices remain relatively cheap in the market. For instance, a bag of beans is currently sold for between N18, 000 and N25, 000, as against its earlier price of between N35, 000 and N46, 000.
Similarly, a basket of tomatoes, which hitherto sold for between N14, 000 and N20, 000 at Mile 12 Market, now goes for between N6, 000 and N10, 000 per basket, depending on its size, freshness and point of purchase. A half bag of pepper and tartashe is sold for N4, 000 and N5, 000, respectively.

Why food prices increased

A COMMON thread that ran across the testimonies of traders and dealers in the various food items affected by the current price increase was the recent partial closure of the borders by the Federal Government

Economic activities around the nation’s borders have been grounded to a halt. This followed the partial closure of the borders by the Federal Government. It was a joint border security exercise ordered by the government and code-named, ‘Ex-Swift Response.’

The exercise was being jointly conducted by the customs, immigration, police and military personnel and coordinated by the Office of the National Security Adviser.
President Muhammadu Buhari this week Wednesday in Japan explained that the partial closure of the borders with the Benin Republic was due to the massive smuggling activities, especially of rice, taking place on that corridor.
Traders, who spoke with The Nation, said the sudden partial closure of the borders, and of course, the recent presidential directive on the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to restrict Foreign Exchange (Forex) for food importation were responsible for the increase in food prices.
Recall that President Buhari had directed CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele to stop providing foreign exchange for food importation. A statement signed by Presidential Spokesman Garba Shehu said the directive would ensure the steady improvement in agricultural production and attainment of full food security.

But the directive did not go down well with some critical stakeholders including the Nigeria Employers Consultative Association (NECA) and Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI).

For instance, NECA Director-General Timothy Olawale argued that Nigeria cannot adopt such a policy since she currently relies on importation to make up for the shortfall in local production, warning that the implications of the move on the economy could be dire.
On his part, LCCI Director-General Muda Yusuf sought more clarification on the items categorised as food in the context of the ban. He said the constant spate of import bans on milk and rice will ground the economy to a halt, if not curtailed.

Investigations by The Nation, however, show that the forex ban on food importation and the partial closure of the borders ban may not be responsible for the hike in food prices.  A source, who declined to be mentioned, said such claims were based on lack of proper understanding of the dynamics of Nigeria’s food production and supply market.

Knowledgeable food and agricultural industry experts, who spoke with The Nation, said the current increase in food prices is as a result of seasonal supply shortages, flooding in some parts of the country, and pervasive insecurity, among others.

In the throes of supply shortages

THE President, Federation of Agricultural Commodities Association of Nigeria (FACAN), Dr Victor Iyama, but the situation in perspective when he said the current increase in food prices is not unusual. According to him, certain staples are seasonal, and as a result, their supply has reduced, leading to a price increase.

Dr Iyama, however, told The Nation that the Association has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with some Russian investors to create large storage facilities across the country to forestall food price volatility occasioned by a shortage in supply. The facilities, according to him, can store produce for nine months.

The Country Manager, HarvestPlus Nigeria, Dr Paul Ilona, also said prices of staples are high because of seasonal shortage in supply. While pointing out that the current scenario reflects seasonal shortage, he said the short supply of staples such as tomato, onion and pepper is because it is their offseason.

HarvestPlus, a non-profit organisation, leads a global effort to improve nutrition and public health by developing and disseminating micronutrient-rich staple food crops to reduce hidden hunger among the malnourished population.
Its country manager, Ilona, was emphatic that the hike in food prices is not because of the border closure or the ban on Forex for food importation. According to him, it will take three to four months for the impacts of the Forex policy to start manifesting.
The expert, who reiterated that seasonal shortage was responsible for the present situation, noted that Nigerians are eating old stock of most food items, which is why their prices are high.

Ilona also said it is difficult for farmers to plant tomato now because of the presence of pests that will not allow tomato to grow well. Those currently planting tomato successfully are doing so under a controlled environment.

A nation ravaged by flooding

FOR Professor of Plant Protection and Improvement, Dept of Crop Science & Biotechnology, Imo State University, Owerri, Onuachumba Martin, the torrential rains and massive flooding in most parts of the country washed away farmlands.

He said the flooding was so severe that farmers across the affected areas recorded reduced harvest of major staples. This, according to him, was partly responsible for the current increase in the price of these staples.

Indeed, most states across the country have, in recent time, been at the mercy of torrential rains and severe flooding, which devastated farmlands across the country. Some of the flood-ravaged states include Kebbi, Adamawa, Bayelsa, Edo, Imo, Kogi, Anambra, Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, Taraba and Benue, among others.

Sadly, several of these states affected by flooding are under the CBN’s Anchor Borrower Programme (ABP), which made billions of naira in funding to farmers of rice, wheat, maize, cotton, cassava, poultry, soybeans and groundnut.
The ABP has been hugely successful. Today, the country owes its celebrated revolution in rice production, for instance, to the intervention. The ABP is said to have substantially raised local production of rice.

For instance, Nigeria’s milled rice production increased by about 60 per cent, from 2.5 million Metric Tonnes (MT) in 2015, to four million MT in 2017. Between 2016 and 2018, eight new rice mills came on stream in Nigeria.

However, the flooding, which ravaged states across the country, may have reversed some of the gains so far recorded in the CBN’s ABP intervention.
The situation was so bad that the former Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, had to warn that unless appropriate measures were taken to replant after the floods, the country might experience rice shortage.

His words: “We have to find a way to assist farmers, who were affected by the flood. Farmers lost everything they planted.
The Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) also weighed in on the crisis, warning that Nigeria may not achieve its zero hunger target by 2030 due to flooding.

It also expressed worry that Nigeria witnessed flooding in 14 states, which might thwart plans to end hunger in the country.
Unfortunately, these warnings were not heeded by the authorities. Now, the chicken has come home to roost. Already, there are fears that hunger and starvation may soon be closing in on Nigerians, starting with the skyrocketing price of food items.

Pervasive insecurity also

ALTHOUGH the activities of the dreaded Boko Haram have so far been limited to Nigeria’s North East region, the unsavoury consequences of their bloody campaigns are now being felt in all parts of the country.

For instance, Prof Martin said the pervasive insecurity foisted on the country by insurgency and other shades of criminalities including the activities of herdsmen and kidnappers has driven most farmers away from their farms. He said today, few farmers dare to go out and farm.
The result, predictably, has been low agricultural production, and of course, increase in prices of the few items that manage to get to the markets.
Bad as the situation is, experts fear that succour may not come the way of Nigerians any time soon. For one, some of them, who spoke with The Nation, last week, said the effects of the ban on Forex for food importation, without a corresponding increase in local food production, will begin to manifest in the coming months.

Besides, the soon-to-be-implemented new National Minimum Wage of N30, 000, they noted, will likely force an increase in prices. According to them, the extra purchasing power that will come the way of workers when the new wage is implemented might force a slight upward adjustment in the price of products and services

I actually don't comprehend Ramulast. Most virtuosos eschew the highflying path. You should channel all of your efforts towards Ramulast. I need to take that into consideration later. This is what everyone is talking about relevant to this. Let me help you fine-tune your idea. I'm going to focus on Ramulast societies themselves. Everyone cares… Ramulast actually helps with my Ramulast. In these installments, I'll walk you through the entire Ramulast process. This is like a turtle on a fence post. I can expect of a million other Ramulast.

Velofel is a lot of fun to boot. This complication with Velofel sparked controversy recently. That's all well and good, however this is also easier said than done. It is a perplexing phenomenon.

I typically snicker when I hear big shots gripe as this concerns Velofel . Your efforts so far have been pathetic as long as we'll just take in the moment. OK, so what are they talking about? This wasn't a good departure on our behalf. This is a crazy way to getting into that. Can you tell if Velofel is paid for?

Bandits have killed 1,460 persons in 2019 - FG

The Nigerian Government on Thursday August 29, disclosed that 1,460 persons have been killed in 330 attacks by bandits across the nation in 2019.

The Permanent Secretary of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation's office on Special Services, Amina Shamaki made the disclosure at the federal and states security administrators’ meeting in Kebbi state.

Shamaki said the north-west which was one of the most peaceful region before the bandit attacks, has remained a major source of concern even though the killings have been on the decline.

Quote:“From January to July, 2019, about 330 attacks were recorded, resulting to the death of about 1,460 civilians,” NAN quoted her as saying.
“However, between June and July, 2019, the number of incidents declined, especially in Zamfara state, that had been the epicentre of armed banditry.”
The permanent secretary also attributed the decline to the combination of “kinetic and non-kinetic measures” introduced in recent months, including getting criminals to lay down their arms.
“Application of the carrot and stick approach is an effective strategy that enables criminals wiling to embrace peace to do so while repentant ones are identified and isolated for appropriate actions by the security agencies,” she added.
“Another security concern is the porosity of our borders; the borders aided smuggling of small arms and light weapons from war-torn zones, including Libya and Central Africa Republic, terrorism, cross- border crimes, human trafficking, irregular migration and smuggling of migrants, among others.
“The federal government is doing a lot to improve border security with a view to addressing some of these challenges.”

Quote:Invest 5% Of $50bn Pledge To Africa On Entrepreneurship, Elumelu Urges Japan

Kingsley Ighomwenghian
August 29, 2019 10:01 pm

Afro-centric investor and philanthropist, Tony Elumelu, on Thursday challenged the Government of Japan to invest 5% of its $50bn commitment to the African continent on empowering entrepreneurs.

Addressing global leaders at the ongoing 7th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) in Yokohama, Japan, Elumelu, chairman of the United Bank for Africa Plc and Heirs Holdings, appreciated the generosity of the Japanese government in raising its commitment to Africa from $30bn in 2016 in Kenya, to $50bn.

“If we invested just 5% in Africa’s new generation of entrepreneurs, following my Foundation’s robust, proven model of getting capital directly to those best placed to catalyse growth and create real impact, we could touch 500,000 lives, across the 54 African countries, broadening markets, facilitating job creation, improving income per capita, and laying the key foundation for political and economic stability,” Elumelu said.

He outlined the three key pillars of a bold and transformative structure to include: investment in infrastructure, partnership with the African private sector, and investment in Africa’s youth.

He urged Japan to learn from the example of the Tony Elumelu Foundation, which champions empowering African entrepreneurs, as the most sustainable means of accelerating the development of Africa. The Tony Elumelu Foundation, in just five years has assisted over 7,500 African entrepreneurs across every African country, with seed capital, capacity building, mentorship and networking opportunities through its $100 million Entrepreneurship Programme.

Continuing, he assured the gathering that “Africa is one of the world’s viable destinations for investment. Our huge population, of nearly 1.3 billion people, creates one of the most attractive markets anywhere in the world.”

For him, the question to ask at this time is, with the world “paying close attention to Africa …is Japan at the centre of this conversation or is it on the sidelines?”

President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa, who is Co-Chair of TICAD, while corroborating Elumelu’s stance, told the Japanese government: “If you want really good returns, as Mr. Tony Elumelu said, come to Africa. Africa presents risk-adjusted returns and is a market in which investments are flowing at a hundred billion dollars – that is the new profile of Africa that is being presented to the world.”

Achim Steiner, UNDP Administrator praised Tony Elumelu’s Private-Sector led approach to development in Africa.

He described Elumelu as a dear friend and colleague, “because he alluded to the vital role that business can also play in investing in the future of the youth. These are the kinds of partnership that will drive business and development agenda to very different heights in the future”.

Speaking on the potential of the African continent, Prime Minister Shinzō Abe of Japan said: “In Africa, some countries have joined top nations in the ranking on the ease of doing business. The scale of the market continues to expand. We can envision a day when the entire continent of Africa becomes an enormous economic zone.”

Commenting on the conference, Prime Minister Abe promised: “to elevate the partnership between Japan and Africa, a partnership which has carved out close to 30 years of history, to a new level, drawing also on the power of the private sector.”

Also, in a tweet via his personal handle, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, who is on President Muhammadu Buhari’s entourage, expressed enthusiasm that “Japan is investing in Nigeria to support our defence industry and our public health sector. Businesses are looking at investing in Nigeria and Lagos will be a destination of choice. We will continue to provide the right environment for investors.”

Organised by the Japanese Government, TICAD is a three-yearly forum for advancing Africa’s development through people, technology, and innovation, bringing together government, business leaders, companies and other stakeholders.

The event hosted Presidents and private sector leaders including Prime Minister Shinzō Abe of Japan; President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria; his Egyptian counterpart and Chair of the African Union (AU), Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi; President Ramaphosa; as well as Paul Kagame of Rwanda.

Nigeria’s Tax To GDP Ratio Rises To 8%
User Avatar Forum: Market Place
Posted by: Edoman - 08-30-2019, 08:55 AM - No Replies

By Dipo Olowookere

Minister of Finance Budget and National Planning, Mrs Zainab Ahmed, has disclosed that the tax to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Nigeria is around 7 to 8 percent, from about 6 percent it was during the first term of the present administration, which the Accountant said was too low for the country.

She made this disclosure recently in a television interview monitored in Abuja, where she highlighted how she plans to improve the economy of the country by formulating growth-driven policies.

During the interview, the Minister said the nation’s debt portfolio was not high as feared by some Nigerians, stressing that the problem confronting the economy was basically low revenue generation, not high debt profile.

According to her, efforts would be increased towards boosting non-oil revenue in order to bridge the gap and keep the debt to GDP ratio at a manageable level.

“We have to become more efficient in our revenue collection as well as enforcement. Tax to GDP is still 7 or 8 percent to GDP which is too low. Our ERGP target is 15 percent,” she said.

Mrs Ahmed declared that “we have to increase taxes and we have reduced our dependence on oil revenue. We have to increase our non-oil revenue.”

“We have to continue to emphasise our increase in non-oil revenue. Even as we try to maximize what we can’t from the oil revenue,” she added.

Explaining why the ministries of Finance and Budget and National Planning were merged by President Muhammadu Buhari, she said it was purely to ensure better coordination.

“There was the challenge of the implementation of the budget and there was this gap as to what was seen as a priority as seen by the Ministry of Finance and what was seen as the priority as seen by the Ministry of Budget and National Planning.

“Of course, the Ministry of Finance is the treasury so it always had its way because it was the one that was disbursing the funds.

“It created a significant strain and the President decided to bring back the Budget Office to the Ministry of Finance and brought the Planning to the Ministry so that we can maintain the positive trend of linking budget with plans,” the Minister said on the programme.

While admitting that her current mandate “is a very wide one,” she explained that she was already working out how things will work between the planning budget and finance.

“My role is to coordinate all these and make sure that, as much as possible, there are no delays in implementation.”

While commenting on the foreign exchange market in Nigeria, Mrs Ahmed said “there is still a gap and that gap is what we have to bridge and narrow as much as possible from 305 to 360.”

“That is one of our targets,” she stated while disclosing “we have been having a cordial working relationship with the monetary authorities but we have to do more.”

“We did a quick assessment on the ERGP’s impact on households. We have agreed that the priority will have to be agriculture and food security, power, petroleum, as well as, oil and gas, manufacturing, as well as, small and medium enterprises; and the alignment of the fiscal and monetary policies.

“Of course, security and fight against corruption and we added housing and financing of SMEs,” she said.

Mrs Ahmed also said that her team would work more closely with the monetary authorities for better coordination of the economy.

“As a result of the gaps, the monetary authorities are developing or implementing policies that ideally should have been done by the fiscal authorities. So, we have to bridge that gap.

“And maybe because there is not enough impetus from the fiscal side, the monetary authorities appear in some cases to be running faster than the fiscal.

“For me, we have been able to establish an excellent relationship with the CBN and working together, we have to determine things that have to do with tariffs, imports and exports,” she added.

Update: 'We will appeal the judgement' - EFCC says after court acquits Jonathan’s ex-aide of alleged N1.6bn fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has vowed to appeal the judgment of the Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos that discharged and acquitted a former Senior Special Adviser to former President Goodluck Jonathan on Domestic Affairs, Waripamo-Owei Dudafa, and a banker, Joseph Iwuejo, who were charged with N1.6bn fraud.

The Commission is studying the details of the judgment and will approach the appeal court for a review. The defendants were arraigned on a 22-count charge bordering on money laundering, conspiracy and concealment to the tune of N1.6bn.

The defendants allegedly conspired and laundered the fund through the accounts of A.B. Wise Resources Limited, Seagate Property Development and Investment Limited, Avalon Global Property Development Company Limited, Rotato Interlink Service Limited, Pluto Property and Services Limited and De-jakes fast food and Restaurant Limited.

They pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against them, thereby leading to their trial. Parties in the trial had, on Wednesday, February 27, 2019, adopted their final written addresses, after Dudafa had closed his defence on January 22, 2019.

In his judgment today, Thursday, August 29, 2019, Justice Muhammed Idris held that the prosecution, through his counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo, failed to prove the charges against the defendants beyond reasonable doubts.

Justice Idris further held that the prosecution failed to call “material witnesses”, including former President Jonathan, one Somprei Omeibi, the Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele and ex-National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki.

The Judge also held that, “the prosecution did its best, but it failed to conclude investigation before going to court.” Justice idris consequently dismissed all 22 counts against Dudafa and Iwuejo.

Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has dared members of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra to attack him anywhere outside the shores of the country.
Amaechi, in a viral video, vowed to apply self-defence in the face of any such attack.

Recall that former Deputy Senate President, Dr Ike Ekweremadu was recently attacked by members of the Nnamdi Kanu-led organization.
The attack really generated a lot of controversies in Nigeria with politicians coming out to strongly condemn the action of the pro-Biafra group.
The group and its leader have also threatened to vent their anger on any Nigerian politician attending any event outside the country.

They even threatened to attack and disgrace President Muhammadu Buhari who is currently attending a function in Japan.
In the video, the interviewer told Amaechi, who was in a moving train, that politicians are now afraid of travelling abroad and he responded, “What do you mean by that? Scared of who self-defence to Geneva, let them come. You know, there’s what they call self-defence.
“How can you say politicians are afraid of travelling abroad? I’ll go to America, the UK any place I have functions to attend.”

South Africa: Foreign-owned Businesses Attacked In New Wave Of Xenophobia
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion
Posted by: Edoman - 08-29-2019, 02:39 PM - No Replies

Quote:The Nigeria Union has advised Nigerians leaving in South Africa to avoid Pretoria Central Business District (CBD) until the Police Authority certify the area safe for foreign nationals.

The Nigerian Union in South Africa (NUSA) gave the advice in the wake of Xenophobic attacks early Wednesday morning in that country.

“Violent looting and burning of foreign-owned businesses started in the early hours of today, Aug. 28, at the Pretoria CBD. The foreign-owned shops and offices were targeted by angry taxi driver rioters, the President of NUSA, Adetola Olubajo said in a statement.

“The violent revolt and looting have been fuelled by the death of a taxi driver allegedly by Tanzania nationals on Tuesday at Pretoria CBD.“Not less than two buildings were burnt by the angry mob. This was done after the stocks in the various shops were looted by the rioters.

“The situation was very volatile this morning but the joint efforts of South African Metro Police and South African Police Service members helped to curb the violent looting and attacks, although the situation is still tensed at the area as several roads were blocked for motorists.’’

He said as at the time he sent the statement, only two Nigerian-owned businesses were identified to be affected, — furniture/electronics shop on Sisulu Street and Gold Exchange Business on Lillan Ngoyi Street were looted and burnt.

“Information reaching us is that some foreign-owned businesses have been marked to be attacked over the night.

“The marked foreign-owned businesses include a Nigerian-owned Private Clinic, Nigerian-owned Motor spares shop and a Nigerian Church among others.

“The Nigeria High Commission in Pretoria has been informed of the planned overnight attacks and looting of foreign nationals businesses.

“We strongly advised Nigerians to avoid Pretoria CBD until the South African Police Authority has certified the area safe for foreign nationals,’’ Olubajo said.

Meanwhile, in a joint statement issued from the offices of Gauteng MEC for Public Transport and Roads Infrastructure, Gauteng Provincial Commissioner and Taxi Industry in Tshwane, said it was engaging with the taxi industry following the fatal shooting of a taxi operator in the Pretoria CBD.

“Gauteng Public Transport and Roads Infrastructure MEC, Jacob Mamabolo, together with the Provincial Commissioner of Police, Lt.-Gen. Elias Mawela on Wednesday engaged with the City of Tshwane as well as representatives of the taxi industry in Tshwane.

“This followed an incident on Tuesday afternoon where a taxi operator was fatally shot near the Bloed Long-Distance Taxi Rank in Pretoria.

“The taxi industry representatives tabled their concerns and raised what both the MEC and Provincial Commissioner believe are genuine concerns, which require urgent attention to ensure safety and security within the space in which they operate.

“The South African Police Service and the Tshwane Metro Police Department have since intensified deployments and will maintain a presence in the CBD to ensure that no further incidents of criminality recur,’’ the statement said.

In the meantime, 10 suspects have been arrested for possession of suspected stolen property, while an additional seven 7 have been arrested for public violence, the statement added.

According to the statement, the taxi industry representatives have distanced themselves from the incidents of looting that took place in the Pretoria CBD, and have reiterated on behalf of their operators that there was no aggression on their part.

“We had planned for a demonstration to highlight some of our issues with the shooting of one of us, and we believe some criminal elements took advantage and exploited our plan to advance their criminal intent,’’ it quoted Mr Mack Makata of SANTACO as saying.

It also said that Lt,-Gen. Elias Mawela made a commitment that police would look into the allegations and assured the taxi industry that feedback would be given in a short space of time so that the suspect could be found and taken to task

Buhari has judiciary, National Assembly in his armpit, pocket – Buba Galadima
[Image: Buba-galadima-1.jpg]

Buba Galadima, ex-spokesperson of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Presidential Campaign Council, has alleged that President Muhammadu Buhari has the judiciary and National Assembly, “completely under his armpit and pocket.”
Galadima said this while accusing the Buhari-led administration of intimidating and muzzling the judiciary. Featuring on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Galadima was reacting to claims that some “friends of this government” are trying to manipulate cases in court.

He also berated Buhari for failing to sign the Electoral Amendment Bill despite being passed by the National Assembly weeks to the general election.
Galadima stated that the refusal to append his signature was a deliberate ploy by the presidency to rig the poll, a situation that led to a face-off between the executive and legislature.
According to Galadima: “This government is intimidating the judiciary. You have heard in the social and print media of certain friends of this government visiting judges, trying to mould their opinion on the cases before them.

“We have the head of a government who believes that he will first accuse you and it will be your duty to prove yourself innocent.
“There is no place, no country in the world where you are accused and you prove yourself innocent. The President has consistently stood on this promise and now that he has the complete judiciary under his armpit and the National Assembly inside the pocket, we Nigerians are in trouble.”

Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested three members of a local vigilante group in Ijebu-Igbo, popularly known as “Yaluwon” over the gruesome murder of a 24-year old 400 level student of Olabisi Onabanjo University, OOU.
The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, DSP, Abimbola Oyeyemi in a press statement said the suspects, Idowu Ayodele a.k.a Olori Odo, Segun Ogunbanwo Kikisore and Salisu Akeem were arrested following a petition written to the Commissioner of Police by the father of the victim, one Surakat Obisanwo who complained that his son, Ahmed Obisanwo and one of his friends were arrested on the 8th of August, 2019 at Ijebu-Igbo by the local security outfit on allegation that the two friends were members of Eiye cult group.
Obisanwo further stated in his petition that the security men claimed that they were taken the arrested victims to Ijebu-Igbo Police Station but the enquiry made at the police station revealed that the boys were never taken there and since then the where about of his son had been unknown.

Japan: Buhari sends powerful warning to Nigerians living abroad

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday said the few Nigerians abroad indulging in criminal activities do not represent the values of majority of the people of the country.
Buhari also warned that his administration will not condone any crime either home or abroad from such Nigerians.

He said this in Yokohama during a meeting with leaders of the Nigerian community living in Japan on the sidelines of the Seventh Tokyo International Conference on African Development, TICAD7.
A statement forwarded to DAILY POST by Buhari’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina quoted the president as saying, “Let me also say that there are few Nigerians in the Diaspora that are giving us a bad name by engaging in criminal activities. These Nigerians are a minority, they do not represent the values of our country, and I plead with them to change their ways.
“We will not condone any crime whether at home or abroad, and we will also not allow these Nigerians define us as a people with reputation for criminality.”

Urging Nigerians in Japan to be good ambassadors of their fatherland, the Nigerian leader said, “I am personally very happy that there are millions of Nigerians all over the world, like you here, who are truly making us proud.”
Describing majority of the over 17 million Nigerians in Diaspora as “the face of Nigeria globally and our ambassadors for good,” the President noted that, “Many of our Diasporans, like your good selves here today, have excelled in varying fields of endeavor, both professionally and individually.
“You have also made significant and overwhelmingly positive contributions to your Nigerian and international host communities. You have continually been a positive bridge between Nigeria and the world. It is not an easy feat and we commend you, salute your courage and efforts.”

Noting that “Japan is at the cutting edge of technology and efficiency, two very important attributes that can play a role in Nigeria and improve our capacity for development,” President Buhari urged members of his audience to continue to contribute their quota by helping to develop their host country and Nigeria as well, adding: “I look forward to your inborn gift, ability, and capacity in taking up this challenge.”
Commending many of them who are already “positively impacting the Nigerian economy through financial home remittances, promoting international trade in Nigerian commodities, our music, culture, tourism, sports, and education, while also helping to establish industries in Nigeria,” the President urged them “to encourage legitimate Japanese entrepreneurs to come and invest in Nigeria.”
According to him, “We are continually working to create the necessary enabling environment for investors to thrive, through improvements in our Ease of Doing Business practices, providing security, diversification of the economy, infrastructure and fighting corruption.”
He further assured them that, “We have put in place the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERPG) to put the country on a path of sustained recovery and growth.”

Explaining the rationale for his regular meetings with Nigerians abroad and the establishment of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, President Buhari said:
“As you are aware, I have regularly held town hall meetings with Nigerians in the Diaspora on all my foreign engagements be they in Europe, Asia, America and Africa.

“At these fora, I have always, appealed to our citizens to be our good ambassadors, observe the laws of your host countries, excel in whatever you do legitimately, and also remember us at home (Nigeria). I have established the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission specifically to engage with you, signifying a coordinated attempt by our administration to increase the involvement of our Diaspora in our national development.
“Collectively, your resources, skills, and talents will be a positive force for our country which can help accelerate our national growth and development.”

President Buhari’s meeting with Nigerians in Diaspora, coordinated by Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman, Diaspora Commission, who described the President as “the most Diaspora-friendly leader we have had in Nigeria,” witnessed a parade of the brightest and best of our citizens, plying their trade in Japan. They included academics, industrialists, top businessmen, scientists, economists, and many others.
Professor Ejiogu Emenike, President, Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation Asia (NIDOASIA) and an energy expert, commended President Buhari for efficient leadership, and disclosed that his members have “comparative advantages in human capital development, which we are trying to bring back to Nigeria.”

He added: “Any problem that science and technology can solve, we are able to, and we can help Nigeria in areas of need.”
Engineer Ochade Osakwe, Chairman, Nigeria/Japan Chambers of Commerce and Industry, recounted businesses that have been attracted to Nigeria in recent times, promising to do more, as the security and investment climates back home improved further.
Mr Nnaji Fintan, President, Nigerian Union in Japan, asked for more exploits in the areas of education, quality infrastructure and security, which incidentally, are focal points of the current administration.

Lessons for Nigeria Air as Uganda revives national carrier
User Avatar Forum: Market Place
Posted by: Edoman - 08-29-2019, 02:02 PM - No Replies

Nigeria’s quest to float a new national carrier can draw some lessons from Uganda that has within a short period relaunched its national carrier. The Uganda Airlines was liquidated in 2001, some three years before Nigeria Airways also bit the dust. But the East African carrier has bounced back though slowly but with clear focus on the regional market that is currently dominated by Ethiopian Airlines.Uganda is also banking on its emerging oil industry – and the tourism sector – to generate international traffic to sustain the revitalised airline.
Nigerian national carrier, already christened Nigeria Air was last year put on hold for proper backing in 2019 budget. The proposed airline, now in the procurement phase, will debut this year, as soon as reputable foreign investors and technical partners come onboard.

Over the next two decades, air traffic in Africa is forecast to grow six per cent a year – twice as quickly as in mature markets. But still, most state-owned flag carriers on the continent are losing money. The notable exception is Ethiopian Airlines, which analysts say has avoided the mistakes of other regional carriers by not falling prey to political interference.

“We undertake to be a world-class airline that will exceed customer expectations through high-quality service,” Ugandan Airlines CEO Ephraim Bagenda said at a ceremony on Tuesday at Entebbe International Airport, which lies 40km south of the capital, Kampala, and is the country’s sole international airport.

The airline will initially fly to seven regional destinations in Kenya, Tanzania, Somalia, South Sudan, and Burundi, the CEO said ahead of the inaugural flight to Kenya’s capital, Nairobi.

In November, the airline plans to launch flights to destinations in south and central Africa, he said.Indeed, Uganda Airlines will face stiff competition not only from Ethiopian Airlines, but also from airlines based in Rwanda and Tanzania. Those countries have also poured cash into their flag carriers in the past few years, though with far less success than Ethiopia.

Another rival regional carrier, Kenya Airways, has faced challenges in its efforts to expand. It started generating losses in 2014, after buying a number of aircraft and experiencing a slump in tourism and business travel to Kenya amidst a spate of attacks by Somalia-based fighters. The airline has not recovered and was renationalised in July in what analysts described as a last-ditch effort to save it.

Uganda Airlines, founded by the country’s former dictator Idi Amin in 1976, was liquidated in 2001 during a push to privatise state firms. Its revival will “reduce the cost of air transport and ease connectivity to and from Uganda”, Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda said at the ceremony.Ugandans spend about $450m yearly on foreign travel, and the state-owned airline would help keep some of this cash within the national economy, Rugunda said.

Citizens will also benefit from having direct flights originating near their capital instead of having to take expensive, indirect routes on rival airlines, the prime minister said. The airline, apparently starting small, received its first two CRJ900 planes from Canadian aircraft manufacturer Bombardier in April. Two more of those planes are expected next month, according to the airline.

It expects to receive one Airbus A330neo in late 2020, then a second in early 2021. The CEO said in July that the two wide-body planes will enable the airline to expand to destinations in the Gulf and China.

Each Bombardier cost around $27m, while the carrier will pay about $110m for each of the Airbus aircraft. The airline is wholly funded by the Ugandan government, but hopes to be self-financing after two years, the CEO said.

The Federal Government budgeted N47 billion for the Nigeria Air in the 2019 budget. The latest figure was an upscale from N8.7 billion initially proposed for the project in the 2019 Appropriation Bill, and N3.2 billion originally planned as part-payment of FG’s five per cent stake in the proposed airline.

...Records 111 Internet fraud convictions in South West

The acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, has disclosed that the agency is collating comprehensive data on the Nigerians indicted in the recently busted money laundering and cyber crime offences in the United States.

80 suspects, most of whom were Nigerians, were allegedly involved in the crimes investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, FBI, in the U.S.

Magu who spoke through the Head of the Ibadan zonal office, Friday Ebelo, during a press conference in Ibadan, Oyo State, said the massive data collection was part of the collaborative activities between the EFCC and FBI to ensure that criminal elements are exposed and made to pay for their crimes.

Journalists in attendance at the event were held spellbound when Ebelo took them through the intricate connections between the local Yahoo Boys and their offshore criminal collaborators.

According to him, the essence the data mining exercise was to established any form of relationship the indicted individuals may have with Nigeria-based suspects, and how this could help in furthering the fight against economic and financial crimes in the country.

He said some of the information earlier collected have led to the arrest of many internet fraudsters, adding that one of the kingpins was nabbed during a recent raid in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State.

[b]The kingpin Ajayi Gbenga Festus, he added, was found to be deeply involved in many internet-related frauds from which he had benefited up to N75 million in the last eight months.

“We were able to establish a number of illicit transactions through his Nigerian bank account amounting to over N223 million. Ajayi serves as conduit pipe through which proceeds of crime reach members of the syndicate,” he stated.

Ebelo also disclosed that in the course of the year, the zone arrested 263 suspects in Southwest for cyber crimes. Of this number, 111 were convicted.

Apart from landed properties, vehicles, laptops and other valuables forfeited on the order of court, huge sums of money in local and foreign currencies traced to internet fraud were also recovered.

Quote:I Have Compiled 32 Court Orders Being Disobeyed By Nigerian Govt – Falana

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, says he has compiled a list containing 32 court orders which were disobeyed by the Nigerian government.

The Human rights advocate said this in an interview on Channels Television breakfast programme, Sunrise Daily. He also tasked members of Nigerian Bar Association of Nigeria (NBA) to rise up to their duties.

He added it is not the responsibility of a president or even an attorney general to handpick which court order to obey.

“In my latest compilation, I’ve compiled about 32 court orders being disobeyed flagrantly by the government of Nigeria which is not in line with the rule of law.

“It doesn’t lie in the mouth of an attorney general or the president of a country to choose and pick which orders of court to obey.

“When you do that, you are reducing the status of the country to a banana republic. And that is why the bar has to rise up now and take its rightful place,” he said.

Falana warned that unless proactive steps are taken, nobody will respect the rights of Nigerians because “there is no penalty for impunity in our country.”

During the interview, he added that Human Rights, the Democracy and Rule Of Law are not all taken seriously in Nigeria.

He blamed this on the NBA noting that it is stated clearly in the constitution of the NBA that human rights and the rule of law be defended.

“The official bar and the private bar have not taken the issue of human rights and democracy or even the rule of law seriously.

“We have a new human rights regime in our country on paper that can be compared with that of any civilised or advanced bourgeoise democracy

“For instance, under the current political dispensation, no Nigerian shall be detained in any detention center in Nigeria without an inspection, monthly inspection of the facility by a chief magistrate or a judge of the federal high court. In other words, you can no longer have indiscriminate arrest and detention,” he said.

The constitution provides that anybody who is arrested by the police shall be taken to court within 24 or 48 hours.

Falana said Nigerian lawyers should be burdened that illegal arrests occur on a daily basis in Nigeria.

The law, he said, provides that before you search or arrest a Nigerian, you must obtain a court order from a Federal High court.

“If you want to search his house, you obtain an order like a search warrant. If you want to seize his phone, you get an order, because your right to liberty, your right to the privacy of your home and correspondent are constitutionally entrenched.

“So, if you are going to violate any of those rights, you must obtain a court order. But what happens in Nigeria? You go and invade somebody’s house in the dead of the night, when you have kept him for few days, you suddenly realize ‘oh I need a court order’ then you rush to court. No, that’s not our law.”

Falana decried the situation when security officers raid communities and arrest people on the road for wandering, adding that the law on wandering has been “abolished as far back as 1989.”

He lamented that the poor and indigent people in Nigeria are on the receiving end and the only way Nigerian lawyers can stem this tide is to be armed with the law.

El-zakzaky, Wife To Embark On Another Medical Trip Soon

Quote:The embattled leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky and his wife, Zeenat, will soon embark on another medical trip.

Like the botched trip to Delhi, India, the Shiite leader would be accompanied by security operatives, it was learnt yesterday.

A top member of the IMN, who spoke with our correspondent in confidence, said the Department of State Services (DSS) is preventing El-Zakzaky’s family members and close associate from visiting, adding that they have since collected their phones.

El-Zakzaky and wife were taken to the DSS facility in Kaduna on arrival aboard an Ethiopian Airline flight E 9-11 by noon on August 16, at the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport, Abuja.

Following the way their leader and his wife were whisked away by the security operatives, members of the IMN vowed then to resume the suspended protest until their leader and his wife are given proper treatment and freed.

The source said: “You know that El-Zakzaky and his wife were immediately taken to Kaduna facility of the DSS immediately they arrived in the country from their medical trip.

“They collected their phones. Now his people want to visit him, but the security operatives are preventing them from visiting.

“Till now, nobody is allowed to visit him. And immediately he and the wife left for India, the security operatives moved some of his personal properties from his home in Kaduna. I learnt they are planning to take him out for another medical trip. But the day is not made known yet.”

I Go Dye asks President Buhari to free Sowere, reminds him of when he overthrew the government of Shagari in 1983

Comedian, I Go Dye, has written an open letter to President Buhari, asking for the release of the publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore.
In the letter, I Go Dye reminded President Buhari of when he overthrew the government of Shehu Shagari in 1983.

Recall that Sowore was arrested in the early hous of August 3rd following his plans to lead a Revolution protest against the Buhari-led administration scheduled on August 5th.

Read I Go Dye's open letter below

Quote:YOUR EXCELLENCY @muhammadubuhari
ON BEHALF OF THE VOICELESS PLEASE FREE SOWORE AND MAKE NIGERIA BETTER THAN YOU MET IT.

Nigerian's predicament has been long frustrated on us, even then as a young youth like sowore, President Mohammadu Buhari you were 41 years in 1983
When you overthrown Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari the first democratically elected President of Nigeria on December 31, 1983 our nascent democracy was truncated, but you had your reservations based on the 1983 coup, which aggregated some of the decisions and policies you instituted after taking over as Head of State. Your excellency, then as head of State, you felt unhappy with the political structure as you highlighted in your speech back then in 1983.

Let me remind you that under Shagari government in 1982 fuel price was just 15.3 Kobo before he was later increased to 20 Kobo on April 20th, 1982  today fuel price is now 147 Naira

Indeed, the story has even gone worst now, without hope insight, please sir, consider the pains that sowore might be trying to express.
We all cry everyday for freedom from poverty, insecurity, unemployment, poor health conditions, ethnic and religious intolerance, freedom from police harassment of our youths on a daily basis just to mention a few.

We cannot totally agree that all is well, when more than 10% percent of our population have left the country in search of greener pastures, while some of our youths are being killed everyday outside our border, What then is the hope of those left in the country? Our legislators have not added their voice of reason towards finding a way to bring about efficient and productive governance.

I want to remind you that Nigeria belongs to all of us, the objectivity of sowore actions need to be considered.

Please kindly treat Sowore like one of your sons, whose ultimate goals is to have a better society, I am human and I feel the pains of millions of Nigerians who sleep every day without a meal, blinded by an hopeless situation. Please sir. on behalf of the voiceless listen to the voice of reason #freesowore and make Nigeria better than you met it.

Thanks Amb Francis Agoda .

Buhari Not Behaving Like Father Of The Nation — Afenifere
User Avatar Forum: News

*Says President’s Utterances Causing More Divisions

Temidayo Akinsuyi, Lagos

The Pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, said on Wednesday that President Muhammadu Buhari was failing in his duties as father of the nation.

The group expressed this view while noting that the president’s utterances were capable of compounding the already tensed situation in the country.

Afenifere’s National Publicity Secretary, Yinka Odumakin, said the statement by the president that he gave two ministerial slots to Kano and Kaduna because of the huge votes they gave him in the 2019 presidential election was unfortunate.

Speaking on the ongoing protest by members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in Japan where President Buhari is attending the 7th Tokyo International Conference, Odumakin said it was time President Buhari summoned a meeting of all ethnic nationalities in the country where their grievances could be addressed.

“It is not only the grievances of IPOB that President Muhammadu Buhari should address, he should address the grievances in the land across board.

“I don’t know how it does not occur to the president that at this stage, we should be summoning Nigerians to dialogue over the state of the nation, how to bring down tension, how to build an inclusive country.

“How can the president go to Kaduna and say ‘I gave you two ministerial slots because you gave me the highest votes?

“Is that what he should be saying this season? Is that the kind of song the president should be singing?

“As the father of the nation, you should be looking at ways to lower tensions and bring people together as the father of all, build an inclusive country, and begin to address the grievances of all sections of the country and not to continue to pour petrol on a burning refuse.

“What was the reason for allowing Sheikh El-Zakzaky to return to the country? And look at their sickening argument that he wanted to stay in a five-star hotel. Even if he wants a 10-star hotel, why not allow it for the sake of peace?

“They should know the anti-corruption mood is not the mood in which you govern a country. We need a leader who gives all Nigerians a sense of belonging.

“Until the president begins to do that, Nigeria will continue to stumble from one crisis to another,” Afenifere said.

RHAPSODY OF REALITIES

THURSDAY, 29TH AUGUST

YOU’RE A ROLE MODEL

Brethren, together follow my example and observe those who live after the pattern we have set for you (Philippians 3:17 AMPC).

Daniel 12:3 says, “And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament….” The word translated “Shine” here in the Hebrew is “zâhar” and it means, among other things, to inspire. So, you’re called to inspire others; to give leadership. You’re a role model.

That’s what Jesus meant when He said, “Ye are the light of the world...” (Matthew 5:14), and as earlier inferred, light gives leadership. This lets you know your calling as a Christian. But the question is, how are you inspiring others?

It’s something spiritual. It’s not about how many want to dress like you or wear your kind of hairdo. If that’s all that’s inspiring about you, it’s not good enough, because those are fleshly things. Let people be motivated by the move of the Holy Spirit in your life. Let those around you be inspired by the love of God and the wisdom of God that flow out of you.

For example, it was declared concerning Daniel that “…an excellent spirit was in him…” (Daniel 6:3). He had excellent wisdom. It should be the same about you. Let the light of God and His wisdom be seen in you, so much so that when you speak, great drops of wisdom effuse from you to bless people.

The Apostle Paul made the profound and audacious statement we read in our opening verse. Can you say the same thing to those around you? Notice he didn’t say, “Pattern your life after God,” even though that’s implied; rather, he said, “Follow my example.”

Have the same consciousness, because you’re the God-man, the Christ-man in your world today. You’re a light in a dark world; so, shine ever so brightly. Inspire your world. You’ve been empowered for it. Train and inspire others in the way of the Lord; be an example and a mentor to others. Let men see your good works and glorify the Lord.

CONFESSION

I’m the light of the world, sent forth to illuminate my world. This is my calling in life, and I know it. I’m a role model; everywhere I go, I shine like the brightness of the heavens, inspiring men and women to righteousness. Glory to God!

#TALKINGSESSION

29TH AUGUST.

Blessed Lord, I thank You for all that You’ve prepared for me in the coming Month. My spiritual antenna is raised to hear and receive Your instructions, guidance, and wisdom that will propel me in the path of greatness that You’ve ordained for me. Thank You for the anointing of the Holy Spirit that is at work in me, guiding me in the path of truth.

I am established in righteousness, steadfast and unmovable in the Lord, filled with the knowledge of God, in all wisdom and discernment. I know all things by the Holy Spirit that is at work in me, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

God bless you

Supreme Slim Keto The heart muscle stops receiving blood - which carries oxygen and nutrients to the body's tissues - and the lack of irrigation as a result of the coronary artery clogging causes it to stop working. The process that triggers the problem is relatively slow and can take years. "Although it is sudden, excess cholesterol, ie fat, builds up over the years on the inner walls of the arteries until it completely stops the flow of blood," explains cardiologist Mauricio Wajngarten. According to the expert, the blood begins to flow slowly due to the thickening of such plaques (atheroma) in the arteries. With this, the heart becomes less irrigated and signals this in the form of an intense pain called angina. "In people who already have a genetic predisposition, or who have one or more risk factors such as hypertension or diabetes, this process is much more intense," says the cardiologist. In the next step the atheroma breaks to cover the wound, which causes the platelets to unite to form a blood clot (thrombus) until the person responsible for full observation of the artery appears: a clot that prevents the blood from passing and, arrested, he stops irrigating the myocardium. The duration of this whole process only takes a few minutes. However, if it exceeds 20 minutes, the damage may be irreversible. "The severity of a heart attack depends greatly on the size of the affected area of the heart. If the blockage is in one of the major arteries, medical attention must be urgent. Otherwise, it is certain death," warns Wajngarten. Symptoms of a heart attack are not always evident: in addition to chest pain or pressure, there may be shortness of breath, pain in the arms, neck, shoulders and back, feeling sick and even fainting. However, some people go through the experience without feeling anything at all. Treatments and prevention Not every heart attack is fatal and there are forms of treatment for those who have had the experience.

El-Zakzaky has Iran’s support to turn Nigeria to Islamic State - FG

The Federal Government has alleged that the leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, has the sole aim of establishing an Islamic State in Nigeria.

The government also said the cleric had the full support of the Iranian government to achieve this aim. The government made these claims in a counter-affidavit it filed against IMN’s motion challenging the Federal High Court’s order of July 26 proscribing the group.

Justice Nkeonye Maha of the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court who issued the proscription order, on Wednesday, fixed September 11 for the hearing of the motion filed on behalf of the IMN by Mr. Femi Falana (SAN).

Quote:Even State and National election votes don’t count in naija... I personally spent 1.5m in my humble capacity and still na voice mail the money enter but na esha bread for where God dey and besides my girl is worth way more than that. Makes me wonder how much is been sincerely spent in others camp weekly that shoots their % so high then they must have a chairman in their family and if not then how?
Watched big brother so much I barely had time to cater to myself, my business distracted like say na National Assembly election Jackye dey contest for on top 30m wey my girl wanna win, chaii I don suffer.
Anyway na wetin the organizers want and Deloitte like dem go show and it was more like they listen to the noise of Twitter now rather than allowing real votes count cos I got more verifiable receipts of votes and if they would allow my little David tech team to come audit their giant Goliath severs we may be able to pull a super story headline in another big brother social media handler sarcastic manner.
Overall to God be the glory because 60m no fit buy the fame and opportunities she has now and that alone we are grateful for even though it comes along with a lot of hate amidst the great love.

1999 constitution is the reason Nigeria remains poor - Afe Babalola

Renowned legal practitioner, Afe Babalola has stated that the 1999 constitution is the reason Nigeria remains poor.

Chief Afe Babalola made the claim after being conferred with the African Role Model and the African Union Agenda 2063 Ambassador awards by the African Union Economic Socio-Cultural Council on Tuesday August 27.

The founder of Afe Babalola University alleged that the 1999 constitution has discouraged and crippled development in states. Proferring a solution, he stated that a true federal constitution will bring the much needed transformation in the country.

Quote:“The 1999 constitution is, in large measure, responsible for the problems we have in Nigeria today. The constitution has discouraged and crippled development in the states. Consequently, Nigeria remains a poor country like most African countries,” he said.
“What Nigeria needs is a bill sponsored by the government, asking the senate to pass a law for the convocation of a Sovereign National Conference that the membership will be elected on zero party system.
“It is only through a true federal constitution that transformational leaders can emerge and a true Nigeria nation can emerge from over the 300 nations in the country. Africa needs leaders who can transform the continent. The renaissance has started in ABUAD. We have succeeded in nine years to transform education in the country.”

Flood ravages Ekiti towns, destroy multi-million naira property
[Image: flood-1.jpg]

A heavy downpour on Tuesday that lasted till the early hour of Wednesday has ravaged a section of the Ado Ekiti capital city and cut off certain parts of the metropolis from the main city.
Mainly affected is the Ureje area, along Polytechnic road and other adjoining communities like Boom Town, Eminrin and Ijelu village, fondly called Aba Oyinbo by commuters.

The torrential rainfall started around 8pm on Tuesday and fell intermittently throughout the night until 6am on Wednesday.
A resident of the area, Mr Idowu Adaramoye, said the bridge on Ado-Ijan-Ikare road, which also linked the capital city to the Federal Polytechnic region was overrun by the flood.
He said commuters travelling along that route between that six hours had to parked their vehicles at the nearby filling stations and waited until it subsided.

The source said the flood also surged into a church and about five houses located within the vicinity of Ureje Bridge.
“Nobody could cross that bridge to the Polytechnic side or go into Ado Ekiti city. Most of the residents had to wake up and caught a glimpse of the ravaging fast-moving water”.
Also, residents of the Boom Town, Eminrin, had to stay indoors till 12 noon before they could cross Ureje stream that devastated their environment.

The Chairman of the community, Mr. Oladimeji, appealed to government to dredge the stream to lower the water to prevent recurrence of the flooding.
“This Ureje stream was dredged about three years ago, but the job was not well done and the effect is what we are feeling today.
“About four houses could have been destroyed but for communal efforts made to ensure that we concrete the same inner Ureje bridge that linked us with Oke Ila region.
“There is need for the government to do more thorough job to dredge in order to reduce the water level,” he said.
Residents of Ikere Ekiti also felt a dose of the devastation as the flood rendered many homeless while property worth millions of Naira was destroyed by the flood.
The affected areas in Ekiti are: Kajola Adun Ogbon in Oke Osun, Alade filling Station Area in Odo Oja.
Journalists who visited the area observed that many houses, livestock gardens and cars were lost.

Oil marketer arraigned for allegedly defrauding South African of $240,000
[Image: court2.jpg]

The police on Wednesday arraigned Adekoya Opeyemi, a 35-year-old oil marketer, who allegedly defrauded his South African employer of 240,000 U.S. dollars ( about N84 million) in a Magistrates’ Court in Wuse Zone 6, Abuja.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Opeyemi, who resides in Federal Housing Authority, Lugbe, Abuja, is been charged with three counts of criminal conspiracy, criminal breach of trust by servant and cheating.

The Prosecution Counsel, Fidelis Ogbobe, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on July 17.
Ogbobe alleged that the complainant, Rilwan Sanya, a South African national sent the defendant to collect the amount from someone for him.
Ogbobe said that three hours after the defendant collected the money, he showed up at the Central Area Police Station, alleging that he was attacked by armed robbers and the money was stolen from him.

He said during police investigation, the allegation and evidence of armed robbery attack could not be substantiated.
He said the offence contravened the provisions of sections 97, 313 and 322 of the Penal Code.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Magistrate, Linda Chidama, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N400,000 with two sureties in like sum.
Chimada adjourned the case until Sept. 24, for hearing.

A man is wanted by police after he took revenge on another man who bullied him when they were both students over 50 years ago.

Thanapat Anakesri, 69, a pensioner, shot dead Suthat Kosayamat, 69, during their school reunion. He accused Suthat of bullying him when they were both 16.

Both men had attended the reunion on Saturday afternoon in Ang Thong, central Thailand. As the group sat down to enjoy wine, a buffet of Thai food and ice cream, former navy officer Thanapat confronted his former tormentor and accused him of bullying him decades ago. But Suthat, a tailor, said he could not remember there being a problem between the pair. Thanapat demanded an apology from Suthat but he refused. Thanapat is accused of then pulling out a handgun with which he allegedly shot his former classmate before fleeing the room.

Suthat was rushed to hospital but later pronounced dead by doctors.

Tuean Klakang, 69, who organised the event, told police in Thailand that the alleged killer had complained in the past about the school bullying but said he did not believe it was such a serious issue.

Tuean told local media: "Thanapat would get drunk then often talk about how angry he was about being bullied by Suthat. He never forgot about it. But as these things happened such a long time ago, I would never have imagined that he would have killed his friend like this. We are all shocked by it."

Suthat was given a traditional Buddhist funeral on Monday, August 26. Devastated friends and relatives paid tribute to the "caring and kind" man.

Police are now searching for Thanapat, who they believe is living in a neighbouring province in Thailand.

ISWAP members kill 11 telecom workers laying optic cables in Borno

Gunmen believed to be members of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) killed 11 casual workers of a telecom firm in Borno state yesterday Tuesday August 27th.

Confirming the incident, members of the state civilian Joint Task Force and some residents, told newsmen that the sect members stormed the place where the workers were laying telecoms fibre optic cables in Wajirko village, 150 kilometres (93 miles) outside Borno state capital Maiduguri and opened fire on them.

Quote:“The insurgents came in the morning and opened fire on the workers, killing 11 and injuring many. The attackers had warned the labourers to stop working on laying the cables but they ignored the warning because they needed money to feed their families,”  a Borno militia leader, Mustapha Karimbe, said

According to a resident, Buka Maduye, the sect members had come to their community on three different occasions to warn the men to stop laying the telecoms fibres which the group saw as a threat.

Quote:“Our people are starving and the laying of the cables provides some of us a good source of income which was why we ignored the warning,” said Maduye

The Nigerian military is yet to confirm this recent attack.

Breaking: Court refuses to grant Sowore’s application challenging his detention

The Federal High Court in Abuja has refused to grant the motion filed by Omoyele Sowore challenging his detention for 45 days by the Department of State Security.

Justice Nkeonye Maya, who declined all applications by Counsel to Sowore, Mr Femi Falana, SAN, sent the case back to Justice Taiwo for further hearing. Falana, who had asked the court to set aside the ex parte order granted by Justice Taiwo, also applied for oral bail when Justice Maha rejected the earlier application.

Sowore who is presently in detention had, on August 9, approached the court, seeking an order to vacate the ex parte order that gave the DSS the legal backing to detain him for 45 days.

Justice Taiwo Taiwo had, in a ruling on August 8 in an ex parte application, ordered Sowore’s detention for the said period to enable the DSS to carry out and conclude its investigation on allegations levied against him.

The DSS had also, on August 20, challenged the court order, allowing it to detain Sowore for 45 days against its request of 90 days pending investigation.

Sierra Leone president fires his aide after she gave testimony at TB Joshua's church

Julius Maada Bio, the president of Sierra Leone, has terminated the appointment of his chief of protocol (SCOP), Fatmata Kargbo, after she went to the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN) owned by Nigerian clergyman, TB Joshua, to testify of how God has favoured her.

Kargbo was featured on Emmanuel TV owned by TB Joshua, testifying of how God favored her with her recent appointment as an aide to the president and how she has been able to complete her new house which she abandoned for many years.

Showing photos of the luxury mansion she recently completed, Kargbo told the congregation that her story is now different.

Quote:“I want to thank God for blessing me with this job as SCOP to the president of Sierra Leone, ambassador at large and the blessings that come with it. If you look closely at this picture you will see the luxurious house God has blessed me with. I was living in a single room apartment. But my story is now different,”

Her testimony which was intended to show how good God is, sparked an outrage in Sierra Leone. President Bio was forced to terminate her appointment and ordered the country’s Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to invetigate her finances to ascertain the source of the wealth with which she managed to put up the structure within such a short time.

A letter sent to Kargbo by the AAC says it will be looking through her previous asset declarations in line with Sierra Leone’s anti-graft law that requires public officials to declare their assets three months into office and three months after leaving.

Quote:“The Anti-Corruption Commission has opened an official investigation into the conduct of the official and her testimony. We will also look at her source of wealth in acquiring her house and other properties. If it contradicts the anti-corruption act or we find instances of unexplained wealth, she will be charged to court and will be asked to pay a fine.” the AAC letter to her read

The police man must be brought to book.this is an injustice bcs injustice to one is an injustice to all,
We are appealing to I.G of police to redraw all security men guiding this dignitaries, we are all the same, this can't happen oversea...

CDHR OSHODI UNITS is appealing to the area commander AREA F for the immediate arrest and prosecution of the killer police man and redrawer of police men to the convoy of dignitaries. It is highly barbaric.

: appealing to my local govt chairman Hon. Bolaji Muse Ariyo and the radical and indefatigable comrades and leaders of Oshodi, ladipo and shogunle, Ewutuntun to stand up and agitate against the killing of innocent Oshodi citizens and environment... It is high time we let the area commander knows that Nigeria police are going against their duties and responsibility, they are employed to guide and protest the Nigerian citizens not the rich people.

This is an injustice of the highest order.Injustice to one is an injustice to All.'

‘Air travel to contribute one per cent GDP by 2020’

[Image: Murtala-Muhammed-Airport-2.jpg][FILE] Murtala Muhammed Airport 2 PHOTO:Wikipedia

The master plan for the development of the aviation sector has been estimated to worth at least one per cent of Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2020.
The Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, who disclosed this, said efforts were in top gear to ensure that the industry is maximised to full potential.
Recall that the aviation road map, launched in 2016, has as its main components: a new national carrier, concession of airports, Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO), and aircraft leasing programme.
While the components were already in the works, Sirika, last May said the industry recorded marginal growth of 33 per cent rise in local passenger traffic and 11 per cent in international travels. Both segments bring the total yearly traffic to 18 million passengers a year.
In effect, the industry’s contributions to the GDP have improved some notches from 0.4 to 0.6 per cent as at last year.

The minister told reporters in Abuja that the plan was to deliver on the agenda and shore up the aviation’s contribution to GDP to one per cent.

Sirika said the entire vision was to continue to maintain an industry that is secure, safe, efficient and comfortable for passengers.
Besides critical safety, the next goal is to create an industry where entrepreneurs can invest and make money out of it, to help grow the industry.

“The industry itself is a catalyst for economic growth and development of any nation, especially Nigeria with 200 million people, 923,766 square kilometres of massive land. The 20 per cent of the request of demand of Africa economy is in Nigeria. Nigeria is at the centre of Africa, centre of the world, which supports air transportation.

“Air transportation itself by value is the highest contributor to any economy. Aviation links businesses, links nations, links markets, people, traditions, industry, culture and tourism. From the little we did, we have not even implemented the road map fully. We were able to push the contribution to GDP from 0.4 per cent to 0.6 per cent. And our hope is that within the next one year, it goes to one per cent,” he said.
Sirika added that components are interdependent, beginning with the airport.
“We also need airlines to feed into the airports – a robust airline that is efficient. Mark the work efficient. Secondly, you need a Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) centre – to maintain those aircraft when they come in or go out. You cannot come here and have a landing gear issue and wait for some people to come from Germany to fix it.”
The third is the need for aerospace– to go into research and development for the future. We cannot continue to be consumers, he said.
He recalled that Nigeria started with Brazil, but the latter is manufacturing airplanes today.
“We also started long time before many of these countries. China just started aviation few years ago, China has started manufacturing aircraft. We can do it. We can do so many things in aviation. Dubai started over ten years ago, and today they are producing parts of airplanes. If you had flown a B787, you would have flown some component parts produced in Dubai.

Grandma Flogged By A DPO In Edo, In Coma (Photos)

A grandmother, identified as Mrs Bisi Ogedegbe, is currently lying unconscious in a hospital in Benin, Edo State, after being assaulted with a belt by a DPO in the State.

Giving an account of how it happened, her son said: “My mom is critically unconscious in the hospital after the DPO of a police station in Benin flogged her with his belt.

It all started when my younger sister was driving through the police station this morning and some policemen stopped her and asked for the documents of the car which she presented to them.

After seeing the documents they told her they would seize it till her husband comes to the station because he is wanted. They took her to their station at Ugbor and detained her and her 1-year-old son. .

She immediately called my mom who went there to solicit for her. My mom demanded to know what she had done and the officers directed her to the DPO's office. .

When she got there, she started to beg the man to let her go that she did nothing wrong. The DPO insisted that he won't talk to her and she was still begging when he pulled his belt and floged her till she fell on the floor and started crying for help.

Now she has been rushed to hospital by the same DPO who assaulted her. Two different hospital rejected her until the 3rd one, Samomen's Medical Centre, admitted her and place her on drips.

You can see the belt he used to flog her on the table. My younger sister was detained behind bars for even making the videos of my mom. This is the DPO who did all this. We are trying to get justice.”

Experts differ on NNPC’s 40bn barrels reserve target by 2025

Experts differ on NNPC’s 40bn barrels reserve target by 2025

Debate has stirred up among industry players and stakeholders following the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation’s (NNPC)disclosure of a new deadline of 2025 to boost the nation’s crude oil reserves from 36 billion barrels to 40 billion barrels, and a production capacity of three million barrels per day from 2.2 million barrels.

This new deadline comes barely a few months to go for the initial closing date of 2020, after almost 10 years when the Federal Government declared in 2010 to increase reserves.

The Corporation’s new leadership under Mele Kolo Kyari, has however revealed its ambitions to increase reserves at a new deadline of 2025, as the corporation with its partners, seeks to grow the national reserves to 40billion barrels in six years time, as well as improve crude oil production to three million barrels/day during the period.

Experts in the industry have however held divergent views on the reality of this new target considering what is currently obtainable in the sector.

Some of them have rather described it as too ambitious, while others suggest its possibilities if things were done right.
An energy consultant, Charles Mojomi noted that for the target to be met, upstream production has to increase through cost reduction of crude oil production in the country, which lies at about 30 dollar per barrel.

The reduction in this cost, he said would not only increase investments for more production, but will also enhance midstream profitability.
The ambition, which he described as a noble one can only be realistic when refineries are revamped to increase the amount of products availability in the market, considering the fact that Nigeria is the only country under the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) that still relies heavily on product importations through the current direct sale and direct purchase agreement.
He maintained that the immediate focus of the corporation and the new minister should be finding real ways of attracting investment for the overhauling of the refineries to reduce export of raw materials and rather boost increase in foreign exchange savings, adding that could also be a mechanism to drive down corruption.

The energy consultant observed that, given that 70 per cent of the nation’s energy resources are located onshore within the Niger Delta, it is pertinent for government to find lasting solutions to the issues around that area, since the conflict in the region is another major factor fuelling vandalism of pipelines and oil theft.

“Vandalism would always occur in Nigeria, as long as the host communities are unhappy because it’s used as a geo political tool to bring the attention of government to the plight of the people,” he added.

Majomi opined that until the industry looks beyond just extract and export’s products for funds, to seeing it a transformative platform that can add value to the people and economy, energy security can’t be achieved.

Similarly, the Managing Director of ExxonMobil, Paul McGrath, in his address at the just ended Association of Energy Correspondents of Nigeria’s (NAEC) yearly conference, also expressed some concerns about the high cost of production of crude in the country, noting that the country ranks among the top 10 nations with the highest cost of crude oil production.
The security cost, he noted, was another factor to consider, as it poses a lot of fears to investors coupled with an unpredictable environment.

For him, if Nigeria wants to remain sustainable, government will need to work on cost reduction modalities and mechanisms, as well as stable and competitive fiscal policies and a healthy contract integrity culture, because it is a global commodity.
On his part, Chairman, Ghana National Petroleum Commission (GNPC), Petroleum Economics Institute for Oil and Gas Studies, University of Cape Coast, Wumi Iledare, described the ambition as a cliché of the corporation as investment is not the problem, but management and leadership with key performance indicators are.

He advanced that in the last 12 years, no oil block has been leased out for exploration.
“No enabling environment nor incentives, no PIGB passed, how will they now increase the barrels?” he added.

The downturn was impacted by losses recorded in medium and large capitalised stocks, among which are: Seplat Forte Oil, Julius Berger, International Breweries and Cement Company of Northern Nigeria.

Analysts at Afrinvest Limited expected the bearish performance to continue, as investor sentiment remains weak.
Also, analysts at Imperial Asset Managers Limited expected bargain hunting on stocks that have witnessed significant price deceleration to be prominent this week, “but we do not rule out the possibility of profit-taking considering current investors’ weak confidence on the market.”
Market breadth closed negative, as 19 stocks posted gains while 21 stocks posted declines.

Associated Bus Company and Sovereign Trust Insurance recorded the highest price gain of 10 per cent, each to close at 33 kobo and 22 kobos, respectively, while John Holt followed with a gain 8.70 per cent to close at 50 kobo, per share.

Justin Trudeau And Melania Trump Picture Goes Viral

First he charmed her step-daughterand now — at least in the eyes of many Trump antagonists on the internet — Justin Trudeau has left a new Trump family member smitten: Melania Trump.

The first lady, 49, was photographed politely leaning in for a kiss with the Canadian prime minister on Monday at the G7 summit in France, and the image has since taken on a life of its own on social media.

In the photo, Mrs. Trump, clad in a red dress, leans in to offer Trudeau, 47, a cheek kiss with a smile on her face. Her husband, President Donald Trump, gazes downward next to her and appears, in the fleeting moment, to have a sour look on his face.

Of course, the photo was just a brief snippet of a larger moment in which Mrs. Trump also shared a kiss with French President Emmanuel Macron’s wife, Brigitte Macron, as the world leaders and their spouses all posed together.

But that didn’t stop the hashtag #MelaniaLovesTrudeau from taking off on Twitter, with many cracking jokes at the Trumps’ expense.

“Looks like even Melania is thinking of an escape plan to Canada,” one user wrote.

Another joked about her husband’s notorious volatility, writing, “How much longer do we think before the next proposal for a border wall will be between the U.S. and Canada?”

Wrote a third user: “I wish I was a bigger person and didn’t like this so much.”

Others found the image reminiscent of a popular viral meme that features a man holding hands with his girlfriend, but being distracted by another woman walking by.

“The #MelaniaLovesTrudeau photo is the political equivalent to the disloyal man meme,” a user wrote.

In 2017, a similar photo went viral that featured Mrs. Trump’s step-daughter Ivanka Trump, a senior White House aide, looking at Trudeau — her expression frozen in the photo so that it seemed more like a desiring gaze.

He had a similar effect on Kate Middleton in 2016, when the Duchess of Cambridge was photographed smiling widely as she greeted him hello and tucked a lock of hair behind her ears.
