Sambo Dasuki makes public appearance in court after a long while in detention.

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court on Tuesday fixed December 11 to hear a Motion on Notice filed by the anti-graft agency, EFCC, in the corruption trial of a former National Security Adviser (NSA), Sambo Dasuki, and Bashir Yuguda.

Both men are accused of misappropriating N19.4 billion arms funds.

The EFCC had charged Messrs Dasuki (first defendant) and Yuguda (second defendant) alongside former Governor of Sokoto State, Attahiru Bafarawa (third defendant); his son, Sagir (fourth defendant) and his company, Dalhatu Investment Limited (fifth defendant).

They were charged on 25 counts bordering on criminal breach of trust and misappropriation of public funds to the tune N19.4 billion.

Recall that the Court of Appeal early this year, granted bail to the former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki.

The court also ordered the federal government to pay Mr Dasuki N5 million for holding him against the provisions of section 35 (6) of the constitution which gives every Nigerian the right to free movement.

Mr Dasuki has been held by security operatives since December 2015 when he was arrested on allegations he diverted $2.1 billion from funds meant for the war against terrorism.

The federal government on Thursday, October 10, signed a deal of $3.9 billion with China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC) for the construction of the Abuja-Itakpe railway.

The Chinese firm, according to Rotimi Amaechi, the minister of transportation, will also handle the construction of a seaport in Warri, Delta state, Daily Trust reports. S Tonguepeaking in Abuja during the signing ceremony, Amaechi said that the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) agreement states that Nigeria will take care of 15% of the cost, while CRCC will handle 10% of it.

The minister also stated that the remaining 75% will be borrowed by the Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) which the federal government will pay back in a period of 30 years after which it will take back ownership of the assets.

He said: “We will give them a sovereign guarantee and they will give us a performance bond that protects our sovereign guarantee

When they finish construction, they will manage for 30 years. “The entire railway for now in Nigeria is constructed 100 by CRCC. I think that the good working relationship we have had with CRCC is the reason we have not been able to engage other companies.”

All African countries are corrupt - Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has stated that all African countries are corrupt and only few countries in the world can boast of not being corrupt.

Yemi Osinbajo who was represented by the Special Adviser to the President on Rule of Law, Office of the Vice President, Fatima Waziri-Azi at the launch of the FLAG’IT App said that corruption and illicit financial flows out of Africa has led to poverty and lack of development witnessed across the continent.

Quote:“The 2019 Global Corruption Barometer on African citizens’ views and experiences of corruption highlights that while most of the people surveyed in 35 countries felt that corruption had increased in their country, a majority equally felt that they, as citizens, could make a difference in the fight against corruption.
“Only a few countries in the world can claim to have a low level of corruption and none of these countries is in Africa.
“It doesn’t matter how much revenue a country generates or how transformed it is or how progressive its plans, corruption will ensure that majority of the people do not benefit from whatever gains are made, which is why despite the highest oil revenues in our history, debt doubled and poverty figures rose. This is why the major pillar of this administration’s socio-economic agenda is the fight against corruption" he said.

Patrick Crusius, the 21-year-old man accused of killing 22 people in Texas mass shooting pleads 'not guilty'

Patrick Crusius, the 21-year-old man accused of killing 22 people at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas on August 3rd, pleaded not guilty to capital murder charges today.

Crusius walked into the 409th state District Court with Judge Sam Medrano presiding, wearing a dark suit, white shirt and glasses. After he was sworn in, he waived the reading of his indictment and pleaded not guilty.

The entire hearing lasted less than three minutes and he is due back in court on November 7th. The court gallery was jammed by about 80 people who came to witness the trial.

According to Dallas News, the crowd included a delegation from the Mexican Consulate. Eight Mexican citizens were killed in the attack and most of the victims had Hispanic last names. One person killed was a German citizen who lived in Ciudad Juarez, across the border from El Paso.

Prosecutors alleged that Crusius drove more than 10 hours from his hometown of Allen, near Dallas, to carry out the shooting, which also injured 24 people. Officials say two injured people remain in the hospital. Authorities said Crusius surrendered to police, saying “I’m the shooter” just blocks away from the scene.

He also told them he was targeting Mexicans who frequented the busy Cielo Vista shopping centre, according to an arrest warrant affidavit. Investigators also uncovered a manifesto published hours before the shooting that he allegedly wrote “in response to the Hispanic invasion of Texas.” Authorities said that the writings indicate a “nexus to a hate crime.”

Local prosecutors have said they will seek the death penalty. Federal authorities are weighing capital murder and hate crime charges. The Department of Justice has called the shooting an act of domestic terrorism. Crusius is being held without bond in an El Paso jail. He has been on suicide watch since shortly after his arrest and is separated from other prisoners.

We’ve recovered N1tr looted cash - Itse Sagay

Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC), Prof. Itse Sagay on Thursday October 10, announced that they have recovered over N1 trillion in the fight against corruption, home and abroad.

Speaking to newsmen at the state house in Abuja after a meeting with President Buhari, the PACAC Chairman promised to recover N5 trillion government funds in the hands of big time delinquent borrowers.

Asides ploughing back the recovered looted funds into the national budget, Prof. Itse Sagay said the Social Investment Programmes (SIPs) are being funded with recovered loots.

Quote:“I think the money so far recovered is roughly almost about N1 trillion. You (can) see that in 2017, N500 billion was spent on this Social Investment Programme and in 2018 the same amount (was budgeted) for the programme.
“So, it must be roughly about N1 trillion although we also have monies that were recovered from abroad and being ploughed back into the same system.” he said

He also said the the President Buhari-led administration has reduced corruption and has also stopped the N400 billion yearly loss to fake fuel subsidy.

Quote:“In the area of recoveries, I don’t need to tell anybody, it is unprecedented in the annals of this country that we could be recovering so much assets illegally acquired mainly by public servants but not only by public servants.
“And the more remarkable aspect of it is that this recovered loot is being ploughed into the national budget every year. It is ploughed back into the national budget and used for the Social Investment Programme (SIP).
“So, when you hear about feeding of over 12 million school children as at when I checked last having nutritious meal every day, you hear of poor families being supported to survive and stand on their feet or over 500,000 young people who are being trained in all sorts of skills and paid N30,000 a month by the government and the interest free loans given to small scale businesses all over the country.
“It’s all part of this money, not a kobo of it is left, everything is ploughed back and I think the country should know that, it’s very unprecedented, this never happened before in the history of this country, everything is ploughed back.
“Then, we have succeeded in improving the quality of prosecution by giving the anti-corruption  agencies a lot of capacity building, train them in the manner cases should be prosecuted and how charges should be drawn. Judges up to the Supreme Court have also benefitted from this programme.” he said
Sagay added: “In the area of corruption, you will be surprised if you think back that nobody talks about fuel subsidy corruption anymore. Previously we were losing almost N400 billion every year on fake fuel subsidy payments but now, it is zero.
“So, generally, the tone of the country has improved. The country has gained tremendously, corruption has gone down. There is still corruption but it has gone down and anybody who indulges, particularly an officer of a state who engages in it, knows the risk he is taking.
“We have the TSA, we have the bank verification number, all those things have made an incredible change in our level of anti-corruption.
“Now you cannot hide money in the banks anymore and agencies cannot hide money in various banks accounts which they spend without the knowledge of the government. Everything is in one place, everything is transparent, thanks to this government.” he stated

Commending the ninth senate, Prof Itse Sagay alleged that the eight senate frustrated the fight against corruption.

Quote:“The issue of corruption fighting back, that is to be expected but I am happy to say that the capacity of corruption to fight back has been reduced with the expiration of the life of Eight Assembly because that is where the main opposition to this government was constituted, main opposition to the fight against corruption, that was the centre and at that time, it did not depend on which party they belonged to, they all ganged up together against the anti-corruption fight and did everything they could to frustrate the government and ourselves in the this fight.
“Luckily, the Ninth Assembly is a totally different Assembly. It is an assembly that is determined to work hand in hand with the government and therefore with us in achieving the highest level of no corruption in the society.” he said.
“When you have a disease that has been alive maybe 50 years, you cannot get rid of it overnight. My own personal experience about corruption, it exists at every level, that is the frightening aspect, through all sectors of society.
“As a lawyer going to court to file a paper, every official of the court imposes a personal tax which has nothing to do with the official filing fees to do his job. These are clerical officers and much lower people and this pervades all aspects of Nigerian society
“So, corruption has become a culture, some people are corrupt without even thinking that they are corrupt, it is part of them. They think it is an entitlement" he added.

A body found in woodland has been confirmed as that of student midwife Joy Morgan, police have said.

Ms Morgan's remains were discovered in woodland in Stevenage on Saturday by members of the public. A post-mortem examination could not establish a cause of death and further tests will be carried out.

Ms Morgan, 20, was murdered by Ajibola Shogbamimu otherwise known as Shohfah-El Israel but her body had not been found until Saturday. She was last seen in December on Boxing Day at a church event in Ilford and was reported missing on 7 February after failing to return to her studies. Read previous report here

After confirmation the body found was Ms Morgan, her mother Carol said: "Joy was so beautiful and completely lived up to her name - she brought joy to all our lives.
"Our family has been living a nightmare and we miss her so, so much. Joy was studying to be a midwife and would have graduated by now.
"I know she would have been amazing as a midwife. I was so proud of her and I always will be. She was our star."

UNN lecturer and Pastor reverses claim of #sexforgrade documentary being doctored after backlash

University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) lecturer and Pastor Joseph Nnaemeka Chukwuma has recanted his claim of BBC's #sexforgrade documentary being doctored following the backlash that ensued after his Facebook post went viral.

In a rejoinder post he shared, the clergyman said he drew his inference from an abridged version of the documentary. He further claimed he will never support sex for grades and has been a strong proponent of gender equality, hence the need to protect both men and women.

He wrote;

Quote:Good day friends,
Thank you for reaching out to me and all.
It is quiet unfortunate that I didnt get the complete video from BBC, I only got an abridged version and from that I perceived my earlier view but on posting my view, my friends and few facebook contacts called my attention and showed me the complete video.
I would never in any way support sex for grades and I am a strong proponent of gender equity...
Hence the need to protect both men and women... Hence my advice to men to be careful

Liberia shuts down radio station for criticizing President George Weah

A radio station in Liberia, Roots FM was shut down by the country's government for criticizing President George Weah on Thursday October 10.

The radio station owned by Henry Costa who is one of the leaders of a group that organized a large anti-government street protest that paralyzed several areas of the seaside capital Monrovia on June 17, was accused of inciting violence.

AFP reported that the armed police riot unit which ringed the radio station building on Thursday morning, making it impossible for workers to move in and out also fired teargas on fans of the radio station.

Quote:“It is indeed a very sad day, but I can assure you that we will never be silenced,” Costa told AFP in a telephone interview.

Commenting on security operatives taking over the radio station, Liberia's solicitor-general Cyrinus Cephus said those running it (radio station) were blackmailing people and instigating violence.

Quote:“They have begun criminal acts of extortion and blackmail. They use their media to spread inflammatory messages against Liberian citizens, and engage in incitement.
“Beginning today there will be no public demonstration that is not … sanctioned by the government of Liberia,” Cyrinus Cephus told a press conference.

President Buhari, 'his rumoured' new wife and what Nigerians are saying on social media

This morning, Nigerians woke up to 'unconfirmed' reports that President Buhari will be taking a new wife on Friday, October 11th.

According to the media reports, 'President Buhari will be getting married in a very quiet ceremony to Sadia Umar Farouq, the current Minister for Humanitarian Affairs Disaster Management tomorrow and will confirm the suspicions of concerned Nigerians over the whereabouts of Aisha Buhari'.
Back in Spetember 2019, several media outlets reported on the continued absence of the current First Lady, Aisha Buhari who has been totally incommunicado since her trip to the UK. She was said to have left the country in protest against “certain developments” at the presidency.

While the Presidency is yet to comment on the developing story, LIB reached out to Bashir Ahmad, the president's personal assistant on new media, for comments, but he didn't respond to our calls as at the time of this report.

Nigerians are however having a field day with the gist on social media.

See all the hilarious reactions below....

Daily Devotional for Friday 11th October

RHAPSODY OF REALITIES

FRIDAY, 11TH OCTOBER.

THREE IMPORTANT FACTORS FOR SUCCESS

Through wisdom is an house builded; and by understanding it is established: And by knowledge shall the chambers be filled with all precious and pleasant riches (Proverbs 24:3-4).

Our theme verse highlights three vital elements for building a successful life: wisdom, understanding, and knowledge. It says with wisdom, a “house” is built; house here could be likened to your life, business, career, family, or any enterprise. It goes further to say that the house, once built, is established by understanding; and then by knowledge, you bring riches into it.

Wisdom is the insight of knowledge, insight into the secrets and mysteries of life. The Bible says in Proverbs 4:7 that wisdom is the principal thing, the capital you need for whatever you want to achieve in life: “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.”

Notice that it doesn’t stop at enjoining you to get wisdom; it goes further to say, “Along with wisdom, get understanding.” Spiritual understanding is just as important as wisdom in building a successful life. You may have the wisdom to start something, but you need understanding to establish it, and then knowledge of how to make consistent progress from glory to glory.

In Colossians 1:9, the Spirit, through the Apostle Paul, prayed for us to be filled with the knowledge of God’s will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding. Knowledge here is exact or full knowledge of God. Through this kind of knowledge, you make your life glorious: your life (the house) is filled with all precious and pleasant riches.

Wisdom, understanding, and knowledge go together. You need all three to be effective, and to live the extraordinary life of success, dominion, victory and excellence that God has ordained for you.

PRAYER

Precious Father, I thank you for granting me the Spirit of wisdom, understanding, and knowledge. Now, I’m filled with the knowledge of your will, in all wisdom, and spiritual understanding, to deal excellently in life, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

#TALKINGSESSION

11TH OCTOBER.

KINDLY SAY THESE WORDS OUT LOUD.

Dear Father, I thank You for the power and ability of Your Word to bring me health, prosperity and cause me to excel in all I do. Your Word is in my heart and in my mouth today, producing in me a harvest of what it talks about.

I am full of the Holy Ghost, and out of my belly flow rivers of living water. Today and always, I am laughing my way through life, from victory to victory and from glory to glory! I laugh at the devil, and challenging circumstances because I know that come what may, I can never be disadvantaged!

I am soaring high on the wings of the Spirit; my mouth is filled with laughter and my tongue with the songs of triumph, in Jesus’ mighty Name. Amen!

God bless you

Freshly Bloom Keto What has to be clear is that when a person performs the energy used does not leave only that place that is being activated, especially if it is fat. When you do aerobic work, for example, the fat used during this activity comes from the entire body, and when you do an abdominal exercise as well, the difference is that abdominal exercise will bring more strength and possible muscle hypertrophy and this will give that feeling of definition the same goes for the butt. Differences between bodies The distribution of fats in the body occurs differently in some anatomical regions. In adulthood when people get fat they will usually get two formats. The pear and the apple pear is called the gynoid, and it is the people who accumulate more fat in the region of the legs and butt. The apple shape is called android and in it people accumulate more fat in the abdominal region. In the latter case it is possible to imagine that people with the android profile have much more difficulty losing abdominal fat and even when this happens the chance of the butt go together is greater because of course it already occupies little fat in that region. The best exercises for the butt Deep squatting: Place your legs slightly apart, feet standing slightly in front of the hip line. Perform the knee bending motion as low as you can and throwing all the weight on the lower limbs. Stiff : Legs slightly apart, barbell or barbell in front of the body, bending movement of the body with slight knee flexion. Be careful not to have lumbar hyperflexion and do not let the knees open to the sides. Sink : Put one leg in front, one leg behind. The back foot should be on the tip. Simultaneously bend both knees, the spine should be retained. Most Common Errors Do a few sets: To achieve glute growth, scientists recommend doing about 15 weekly sets for this muscle group. Less series than this may not provide the desired effect.

Lady jailed after killing her fiance over engagement ring

27-year-old Blessing Edet who was arraigned before an Ikeja Special Offences Court for killing her 33-year-old fiance, Edet Ebong during a fight that ensued following her refusal to wear an engagement ring he gave her, has been handed a 10 year jail sentence.

New Telegraph reported that Edet was convicted on a commuted sentence of involuntary manslaughter after being arraigned before Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo, over the offence committed around 12:15 am on August 18, 2015 at her apartment in Lekki area of Lagos state.

Giving her account of the incident in court on February 7, she said the deceased wanted her to cook for him by midnight but she refused because she was tired.

Quote:“Upon hearing that I was tired, he went into the kitchen and saw the engagement ring he had given me beside the stove. He became angry and asked why I was not wearing the ring.
“He broke a mirror and used part of it to stab me, I was bleeding and I was crying out to the neighbors for help,” she said.

Edet said she stabbed Ebong in the abdomen with a kitchen knife during the fight. Delivering her judgement, Justice Taiwo said:

Quote:“By stabbing the deceased in the lower part of his abdomen, she did not intend to cause grievous harm to the defendant. The defendant has established factors necessary to prove self-defence.
“I find that the defendant acted in self-defence as she was a victim of unprovoked assault. The defendant is not guilty of murder but I find her guilty of the involuntary manslaughter of Edet Ebong.
“Section 227 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State prescribes life imprisonment for the offence of involuntary manslaughter. This is a clear case of recklessness on the part of both the deceased and the defendant.
“I hereby sentence the defendant to 10 years imprisonment with no option of fine. The sentence will take effect from the month of August 2015 which is when she has been in custody.”

FG Demands $62bn PSC Arrears from Oil Majors
October 10, 2019

OPEC grants Nigeria higher production quota

Alike Ejiofor with agency report

The federal government has begun moves to recover as much as $62 billion from international oil companies, being backlog of its share of income from Production Sharing Contract (PSC).

It is basing its action on a 2018 Supreme Court judgment that would enable the country to increase its share of income from PSC.
The government accused the energy companies of failing to comply with a 1993 contract-law requirement that the state receives a greater share of revenue when the oil price exceeds $20 per barrel, according to a document prepared by the attorney-general’s office and the Justice Ministry.

The document, seen by Bloomberg, was verified by the ministry, the agency reported wednesday.
Another report wednesday by Reuters also said the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) has granted Nigeria a higher oil output target under an OPEC-led deal to limit oil supply in a move unannounced by the group, following efforts by Africa’s largest exporter to tweak the agreement to accommodate its expanding oil industry.

Under the PSC law, companies including Royal Dutch Shell Plc, ExxonMobil Corp., Chevron Corp., Total SA and Eni SpA agreed to fund the exploration and production of deep-offshore oil fields on the basis that they would share profit with the government after recovering their costs.

Bloomberg reported that when the law came into effect 26 years ago, crude was selling for $9.50 per barrel.
The oil companies currently take 80 per cent of the profit from these deep-offshore fields, while the government receives 20 per cent, according to the document.

Representatives of the oil companies were said to have met with the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, on October 3.

Malami told them that while no hostility is intended toward investors, the government will ensure all the country’s laws are respected.

However, the oil companies including Shell have gone to the Federal High Court to challenge the government’s claim that they owe the state any money, arguing that the Supreme Court ruling doesn’t allow the government to collect arrears.

“We do not agree with the legal basis for the claim that we owe outstanding revenues,” Shell’s Nigerian unit said in an emailed response to questions.

Chevron spokesman, Ray Fohr, told Bloomberg that the company doesn’t comment on matters before the court.
Meanwhile, OPEC has raised Nigeria’s oil production quota target under a deal to limit oil supply in a move unannounced by the group.

A report yesterday by Reuters quoted sources it identified as OPEC delegates as saying that the country’s allocation was increased to 1.774 million barrels per day (bpd) from 1.685 million bpd at the last OPEC meeting in July.

However, the newly approved quota fell short of the 2.3 million bpd projection on which oil revenue for the 2019 budget was anchored and also below the 2.18 million bpd that the revenue to fund the 2020 budget, which President Muhammadu Buhari presented to the National Assembly on Tuesday was based.

The quota increase will mean Nigeria will see an improvement in its compliance with the supply cut accord, but it is still pumping more crude than the new target according to OPEC’s own figures and industry surveys.

“It’s happened,” one of the delegates said. “I’ve not heard of any other changes to the agreement.”

Nigeria has had a dismal record in delivering its share of the cut, overshooting by 400 per cent in August according to the International Energy Agency. OPEC put Nigerian production at 1.866 million bpd in August – far above the new quota.

One of the OPEC delegates said OPEC granted Nigeria the target revision because of the new Total-operated Egina oilfield, which started production in January and had not been factored in when the initial quota was calculated.
Some of the Egina production will also classify as condensates, meaning even more of Nigeria’s output would not count towards the new cap.

While OPEC has not formally announced the change, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Mr. Timipre Sylva, mentioned the new target in a Bloomberg interview last week.

He did not elaborate on circumstances leading to the new target.

The 14-nation OPEC agreed in December with non-OPEC partners, including Russia to curb crude production by 1.2 million bpd from the start of this year.

OPEC’s share of the cut is 800,000 bpd, with Venezuela, Iran and Libya exempt.

It is not clear whether this figure, or any other countries’ targets, have been adjusted to accommodate Nigeria’s increased quota.
Nigeria only started participating in the deal in January, having been granted an exemption in previous OPEC+ cuts due to militant attacks that reduced its output.

The 2020 budget is a ‘budget of taxation’ - Senator Abaribe

Eyinnaya Abaribe, the Senator representing Abia South in the red chamber has described the 2020 budget President Muhammadu Buhari recently presented to the National Assembly as “a budget of taxation.”

The Senate Minority leader stated that the country is currently struggling and the budget was not sustainable because debt servicing was higher than capital expenditure.

Quote:He said: “This is nothing but a budget of taxation. I urge the Senate to look at that fact as it is not a sustainable budget. Debt servicing is higher than capital expenditure.
“We are still struggling. I second the budget presentation by the Senate Leader.”

His comment was backed by the former Governor of Benue State, Gabriel Suswam who insisted that the borrowing methodologies by the current administration needs to be addressed.

Quote:“I commend Mr. President for bringing an ambitious budget; the deficit worries me, there is a correspondence borrowing increase; we need to do something in this Chamber by way of legislation to address borrowing,” Suswam said.

Andrea Pizziconi, the CEO of Africa Integras has accused the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof Ebenezer Oduro-Owusu of sexually harassing her while commenting on BBC's #sexforgrades documentary which was aired on Monday October 7.

According to Pizziconi, her encounter with Professor Oduro-Owusu began after he halted the $64m investment her company planned carrying out in University of Ghana.

She further revealed that the University of Ghana VC refused to work with her to save the Africa Integras project on grounds of being “far too pretty to worry my little head about the project”. During a physical meeting, Pizziconi said Oduro-Owusu told everyone present “turn around, everyone, I want to give her a proper hug.”

The CEO of Africa Integras also alleged that she was advised not to make waves and definitely not to raise the #metoo flag if she wanted to put the project back on track.

Quote:“I have remained mostly quiet despite the battery of attacks by Professor Ebenezer Oduro Owusu on my dignity. I was advised not to make waves and definitely not to raise the #metoo flag if I wanted to put the project back on track, which I do. Now I feel compelled to speak up and draw a direct line between this sex scandal and our derailed project,” her statement read in part.

Hillary Clinton has fired back at President Donald Trump after he taunted her about entering the 2020 presidential election.

"Don't tempt me, Don't tempt me. Do your job," Clinton said in response to an earlier tweet from Trump that said, "I think that Crooked Hillary Clinton should enter the race to try and steal it away from Uber Left Elizabeth Warren".
READI think Crooked Hillary Clinton should enter the 2020 presidential race - President Trump Tweets
Clinton's tweet Tuesday comes months after she told News 12 Westchester in March that she would not run for president again in 2020.

"I'm not running, but I'm going to keep on working and speaking and standing up for what I believe. I want to be sure that people understand I'm going to keep speaking out. I'm not going anywhere" she said at the time.

Clinton then went on to call Trump a "corrupt human tornado. I believe that, look there were many funny things that happened in my election that will not happen again. And I'm hoping that both the public and press understand the way Trump plays the game".

Kaduna Inland Dry Port : A Look At The Activities Of Nigeria's First Dry Port
User Avatar Forum: Market Place
Posted by: Edoman - 10-10-2019, 03:20 PM - No Replies

Ever since the Kaduna Dry Port has been commissioned for use since May 2019, very little has been heard of this port. In May, it was reported that the minister of transportation, Mr Rotimi Amaechi, the Kaduna State gov., Mallam Nasir El-Rufai among other dignitaries from the Nigerian Shippers Council were on ground for the official take-off of this port.

According to the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi says the Kaduna Dry Port will greatly provide the needed stimulus for massive economic growth in Kaduna state and the country at large.

The minister explained that the dry port was also to address the problems of inadequate access to seaports, remove frequent congestion which resulted in the loss of cargo in transit, carnage and accident on the land mode.

He added that the inland ports “not only reduce transport costs but also bring shipping to the doorsteps of shippers.”

Ever since the kick-off of this place, our findings reveal that little activities are taking place in this port as people are still bent on using the Lagos port which is already congested at the moment. In August, the Nigeria Shipper Council boss has to appeal to shippers to patronize the Kaduna Inland Dry Port and not leave it to lay fallow, this is because the port has suffered low patronage from shippers across the country except for agro products shippers.

Onyema, OON, Chief Executive Officer, The Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to cooperate in promoting cross listing and trading of green bonds in Nigeria and Luxembourg , Singapore on Wednesday.

Goddy Egene

The Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Luxembourg Stock Exchange (LuxSE) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to promote cross-listing and trading of green bonds in Nigeria and Luxembourg.

The MoU was signed by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the NSE, Mr. Oscar Onyema and CEO of LuxSE, Mr. Robert Scharfe, during the annual meeting of the World Federation of Exchanges in Singapore yesterday.

NSE said in a statement that the MoU further established an agreement for the two exchanges to collaborate with a view to sharing best practises and organising joint initiatives in their respective markets.

Commenting, Onyema said: “This collaboration reinforces NSE’s drive to foster the growth of sustainable finance in Nigeria, a journey that commenced with the launch of the first sovereign green bond by NSE, in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Environment, Federal Ministry of Finance and the Debt Management Office. With the MoU, issuers will enjoy the benefit of increased visibility through the cross listing of their securities in Nigeria and Luxembourg.

“The partnership will further facilitate the growth of the Green Finance industry in Nigeria and ultimately deepen the Nigerian capital market through the mobilisation of the foreign green capital needed to fund sustainable projects in Nigeria.”

On his part, Scharfe said: “Sustainable finance is becoming a truly global movement. By joining forces with other exchanges to promote and facilitate green finance, we strive to accelerate the sustainable finance agenda and increase awareness of interest in investment projects that support the sustainable development that our world needs. We are pleased to cooperate with the NSE further strengthen sustainable finance in and between our markets.”

The Nigerian Green bond market received international recognition following the issuance and listing on the NSE of the N10.69bn Federal Government sovereign green bond in December 2017. This issuance sparked significant interest from the international and local capital market communities as it opened new investment opportunities, especially for domestic investors, to increase their exposure to financial instruments that generate social and environmental impact.

According to NSE, The LuxSE operates the Luxembourg Green Exchange (LGX), a platform exclusively dedicated to sustainable finance instruments. LGX holds a 50 per cent global market share of listed green, social and sustainability bonds. LuxSE works closely with selected stock exchanges around the world to support the growth of sustainable finance.

N7trn oil loss: Senate begins Amendment of PSC Act

The Senate on Tuesday commenced the amendment of the Product Sharing Contract Act, following consideration of the bill.

Senate had last Wednesday resolved to investigate the sum of N7 trillion oil revenue lost by the federal government over a period of twenty years due to non-review of the PSC Act.

PSC is a contractual arrangement for petroleum exploration and production whereby the federal government as owner of petroleum resources engages a contractor to provide technical and financial services for an agreed share in profit oil after payments of royalty,  coat and tax oil.

The bill titled “Deep Offshore and Inland Basin Production Sharing Contract 2004 (amendment) Bill 2019” passed second reading in Senate on Tuesday.

The bill was consequently referred to the Senate Committees on Petroleum (Upstream) and Finance for further legislative action.

Sponsor of the bill, Senator Albert Bassey Akpan (PDP, Akwa-Ibom North East) in his presentation said the bill “seeks to amend section 5 of the PSC Act to bring the provisions of that section into conformity with the generality of the provisions of the Act and into congruence with the intendment and essence of Production Sharing Contracts.”

He stated that “The PSC arrangement was offered by the Federal Government of Nigeria as a contractual arrangement for the exploration and production of petroleum in the 1991 licensing round.”

According to Akpan, the fiscal incentives from the PSC arrangement are distinct and absent from the provisions of the Petroleum Act and the Petroleum Profit Tax Act which regulates the fiscal regime of other types of petroleum exploration and production arrangements.

He further stated that “the Act provided in section 16 that where the price of crude oil exceeds US$20 per barrel, the PSC Act will be reviewed to ensure that the share of the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) in the additional revenue is adjusted to the extent that the PSCs shall be economically beneficial to the FGN and that in any event, the PSC Act shall be liable to be reviewed after 15 years from its commencement in 1993 and every 5 years thereafter.”

“This amendment alters the royalty payable by the PSC contractors so that whenever oil and gas price increases the share of government increases with the automatic inception of the newly introduced royalty by price mechanism”, Senator Akpan added.

Meanwhile, Senate on Tuesday urged the federal government to give priority attention to the development of the Oloibiri Oil and Gas Research Centre and Museum.

Also,  it urged the Federal Government to direct PTDF and contractors to mobilise to site to commence the construction of the research Centre and Museum.

This followed a motion by Senator Biobarakuma Degi-Eremienyo (Bayelsa East) on the need to ensure immediate commencement of the Oil and Gas Research Centre and Museum, Oloibiri, Bayelsa State -Nigeria’s first oil field.

He explained that in exhibition of the importance of the first oil field and the need to develop the foreign exchange earning tourism potentials of the area, the idea to build a world class museum of oil and gas was conceptualised, designed and foundation stone laid by President Shehu Shagari in 1953.

According to him, though the federal government removed the project from the National Commission for Museum as rewarded and domiciled with the Petroleum Technology Development Fund in 2011, the project still remains moribund.

Nigeria seeks $62bn from Shell, Chevron, Exxon, Total for past profits

Nigeria seeks $62bn from Shell, Chevron, Exxon, Total for past profits

Nigeria is seeking to recover as much as $62 billion from international oil companies, using a 2018 Supreme Court ruling the state says enables it to increase its share of income from production-sharing contracts (PSC).

The government says energy companies failed to comply with a 1993 contract-law requirement that the state receive a greater share of revenue when the oil price exceeds $20 per barrel, according to a document seen by Bloomberg, prepared by the attorney-general’s office and the Justice Ministry.
The document was verified by the ministry.
While the government hasn’t said how it will recover the money, it has said it wants to negotiate with the companies. In its battle with MTN, the fine imposed on the company was negotiated down from an initial penalty of $5.2 billion.

Under the production-sharing contract law, companies including Royal Dutch Shell Plc, ExxonMobil Corp., Chevron Corp., Total SA and Eni SpA agreed to fund the exploration and production of deep-offshore oil fields on the basis that they would share profit with the government after recovering their costs.

When the law came into effect 26 years ago, crude was selling for $9.50 per barrel. The oil companies currently take 80 percent of the profit from these deep-offshore fields, while the government receives 20 percent, according to the document. Oil traded at $59.07 a barrel on the ICE Futures Europe Exchange at 14:18 p.m. in London on Wednesday.

Most of Nigeria’s crude is pumped by the five oil companies, which operate joint ventures and partnerships with the state-owned Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation or NNPC.

Representatives of the oil companies met Justice Minister Abubakar Malami Oct. 3 in the capital, Abuja, Bloomberg reported. Malami told them that while no hostility is intended toward investors, the government will ensure all the country’s laws are respected.

450,000 barrels of stolen crude unsettle oil firms

450,000 barrels of stolen crude unsettle oil firms

The activities of crude oil thieves are given the operators of Oil Mining Lease (OML 26) some sleepless nights.

The operators are, therefore, calling on the Federal Government to come to their aid and rescue their businesses.
About half of the production of the asset is being siphoned on daily basis and this is seriously impacting the operations of companies that are equity holders in the asset and the Nigerian economy at large, they say.

The asset produces 10,000 barrels per day but it is losing around 5,400 barrels to oil thieves daily.
Implying that over 450,000 barrels of crude are lost within three months.

The asset which is jointly managed by officers of Nigeria Petroleum Development Company (NPDC) and First Hydrocarbon under what is called Asset Management Team (AMT) has suffered series of tapping on its crude oil pipeline by the thieves.
The stolen crude is either taken to illegal refineries site which has around 40 refineries scattered deep in the forest where they cook the crude or the crude is allegedly trucked out of the area to other destinations in the night.

One of the most worrisome aspects of the whole saga according to the company officials, is the fact that where this is happening at Agbarha-Otor which housed the LACT Unit of the company is around 700 meters away from the 222 Battalion of the Nigerian Army headquarters.
According to Blessing Okpowo, manager, Government, Security and Community Affairs, the thieves started stealing from about 500 barrels a day, then to 800 barrels; they increased to 1000, to 1,500 barrels a day. As of last week, the asset was losing 5, 400 barrels every day. When this is calculated over time, it has lost well 450,000 barrels of crude within three months.
He said the line being tapped comes from the company’s Flow Station at Ozoro.

“It is 29 kilometers from our flow station to the LACT Unit where we offload into the major trunk line that goes to the TFP (Trans Forcadoes Pipeline). So, it is in-between the 29 km that they have this tapping points and steal our crude,” Okpowo said.
The company he stated works closely with the soldiers and who also supports the organisation in providing security.
“There are over 40 soldiers that are in the company’s operations.”

He, however, stated that It is a mystery to him how the thieves still succeeds in stealing the crude oil without anybody getting arrested.
The Modus Operandi of the thieves is that they come to connect their holes to the pipeline in such a way that anyone can hardly notice it, he added.

“We discovered a three-inch pipe which they connected to our 10 pipeline, insert a valve and begin to load into trucks and go away. Underneath this place is where our 10” pipeline that goes to the LACT Unit in Eriemu,” he said.
“We came and harvested the three-inch pipeline that was connected to our pipeline and dug underneath three kilometers away before inserting their valve, we removed their pipe and clamped the hot tap spot.   Junaid: North Will Remove Any President Who Attempts To Implement 2014 Confab
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion
Posted by: Edoman - 10-10-2019, 01:56 PM - No Replies

Quote:Junaid Mohammed, elder statesman and Second Republic federal lawmaker was a delegate to the 2014 National Conference convened by the Goodluck Jonathan administration. In This interview with TEMIDAYO AKINSUYI, he spoke on why the recommendations of the conference can’t be implemented and other issues. Excerpts:

insecurity in their states, some governors have been negotiating with bandits and in some cases, giving them money. Do you think this is a right approach?

It is not. I believe it is a very dangerous trend. It shows that the governors are not sincere and they have underfinanced the security system even though they make billions of naira in the name of maintaining security. Essentially, they have been stealing the money which was earmarked for security. So, I don’t accept the idea of negotiating with bandits. It is a bad idea and I believe instead of paying off the bandits, they can finance the police and assist the DSS and other security organisations. It shows what will happen in the state if governors are allowed to set up their private policemen. It is going to be disastrous and make Nigeria ungovernable.

Some Nigerians are calling for the implementation of the 2014 national conference as a way of addressing some of the challenges facing the country. What is your take on this?

Those saying that, have they read the report? Has anyone of us who attended the conference told Nigerians what aspect we want to be implemented? I was at the 2014 national conference. I represented Kano state which is one of the two biggest states in the country. I had been involved in several conferences in the past and even after the 2014 conference, we also had another one here in Kano concerning the state. As far as I am concerned, that 2014 confab is a fraud. What they are purporting to be the report is a fraud. Most of the issues that we discussed which were rejected were brought back into the final report through the backdoor. They did that with the full cooperation of the then President Goodluck Jonathan. But we defeated every issue they brought even though we are in the minority. If you want to have a constitutional conference, one, it must be a representative of the whole country so that people don’t feel marginalised especially those who are in the majority in the country. The north has been in the majority in the country even before 1914. You cannot have a constitutional conference in which the North has been reduced to minority in the country and you say you are having a constitutional conference. And in spite of that,we still defeated them.

In fact, I want somebody from the South to become the President and attempt to implement the report of the 2014 conference; we will kick him out in no time. You cannot be a democrat and pretend that it doesn’t matter who are the people who constitute the majority in the country. Democracy in itself means credible free and fair election. Whatever we do, that principle must be represented. If they want to try it, let them try it. It is one of the gimmicks that Jonathan attempted but he failed. In fact, initially, the idea in the North here was that we should not attend the conference but we thought doing so may lead to the break-up of the country and we don’t want to be held responsible historically for that kind of very serious step. So, we went, we saw and we defeated them.

Do you think it is morally right for a northerner to aspire for the Presidency in 2023 after President Buhari must have completed his two terms if he survives the judgment of the Supreme Court?

What do you mean by morally right? Politics and morals are two different aspects of human endeavour. First and foremost, if you know my history, from the Second Republic, I have never supported the idea of zoning or rotation. Though many Nigerians accept the idea of zoning or rotation, I don’t. But at the same time, the South East has not accepted the principle. PDP accepted the principle because they want everybody to have the opportunity to steal public money. They want it to go round. If Nigerians are serious, if a party because of zoning should put forward an unpopular or unacceptable candidate, they should simply refuse to vote for him. But in a democracy, saying we should dedicate certain positions to some people in what is supposed to be a democratic free and fair election is wrong.

Shehu Sani Tackles Buhari Over Accusation Against World Bank
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion
Posted by: Edoman - 10-10-2019, 12:41 PM - No Replies

Quote:Shehu Sani, a former Senator has lashed out at President Muhammadu Buhari over the latter’s accusation against assessment of some foreign bodies.

Mr Buhari while playing host to his Economic Advisory Council (ECA) accused World Bank, International Monetary Fund and other international groups of publishing inaccurate statistics about the country.

One of the damning statistics is that of World Bank Poverty Clock which opined that the acclaimed giant of Africa is the headquarters of poverty in the world.

The submission did not go down well with the administration of President Buhari which rejected and continues to kick against statistics of both foreign and local bodies.

The government which prides itself as seriously fighting corruption also kicked against the report of Transparency International which said the country is now more corrupt under Buhari than it was during previous administrations.

It has also rejected the submission of Amnesty International that the All Progressive Congress led administration has severally trampled and violated human rights in the country.

“Today, most of the statistics quoted about Nigeria are developed abroad by the World Bank, IMF and other foreign bodies. Some of these statistics are wild estimates that bear little relation to the facts on the ground,” the president said on Wednesday.

Reacting to the remarks of the president, the former lawmaker wondered why the Nigerian leader is criticising the World Bank which he has been consistently borrowing from but continues to reject the verdict of the financial institution.

“You want World Bank money,You don’t want World Bank assessment,” Mr Sani said in a tweet on Thursday.

Big Brother Naija reality show ex-housemate, Diane Russet, has said she never expected the overwhelming level of love and support the people of her home state, Kaduna, gave her when she left the house after 93 days.

According to Diane, coming from a conservative background, and being the first ever female housemate from the north, she had thought her participation in the reality TV show would be met, at best with criticism and mild hostility from her people.

Sharing some of her experiences from the house and her reception outside the house with Channels TV, the Kaduna State indigene said:

The love I have received from my state has been the best.

I didn’t expect it this way. I thought I’d be judged or criticized but the fact that I get calls and people say I made them proud, I made the northern part proud and some even say their daughters look up to me, is amazing.

The ebony skinned reality TV star, who was also one of the youngest Big Brother Naija housemates, said the experience in the house was amazing and she has also come home to receive overwhelming love from fans.

Speaking about her friendship with fellow housemate, Elozonam, she explained that both of them are great friends and for now are only looking forward to knowing each other better and working together.

It had been an intriguing and eventful 99 days, starting with 26 housemates, each serving their own dose of ‘pepper’ along the way.

From the occasional fights, drama and controversy, to the tasking arena games, Friday night parties, celebrity visits and surprise evictions, the show most definitely served up enough pepper and spice that left the audience glued to their screens and constantly sparked conversations among Nigerians, especially on social media.

On the final day, host Ebuka-Obi Uchendu was in his element and made sure to take the suspense up a notch, making the most of the last of 99-drama filled days before declaring Mercy the winner to wild cheers from her supporters.

Reacting to Mercy’s win, Diane who was one of her closest friends in the house, said she knew she always stood a great chance and she wa

Abdulkarim Dauda's Retirement Year Extended By 3 Years By Buhari - DailyNigerian
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion
Posted by: Edoman - 10-10-2019, 09:28 AM - No Replies

President Muhammadu Buhari has secretly extended the service of his Personal Chief Security Officer, Abdulkarim Dauda Daura, DAILY NIGERIAN has gathered.

Mr Dauda, a commissioner of police with service number P.NO. 23853, is to retire this year, having enlisted into the Nigeria Police Force as a Cadet Officer on January 1, 1985.

His father, Alhaji Dauda Daura, a groundnut merchant in the colonial era in Kano, was Mr Buhari’s elder brother with whom young Buhari once stayed.

Nigeria’s Police Act says an officer is expected to retire from service after 35 years or when he attains the age of 60. The Act does not exclude an officer who has not attained the age of 60 but has served for 35 years from retirement.

But according to a Police Wireless Message, which means ‘secret memo’ in security communications, sighted by DAILY NIGERIAN, the president has extended his service to May 13, 2023 — two weeks to the expiration of the president’s term.

By 2023, Mr Dauda would have served for 38 years.

The memo reads: “The President and Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces and Chairman Police Council has graciously approved the extension of service of CP Abdulkarim Dauda to 13th May, 2023 when he would have attained sixty (60) years of age. COMPOL INFO-TECH only and amend your records please.”

The memo was signed by Usman Alkali Babe, the Assistant Inspector-General in charge of Police Force Secretariat, where the memo emanated from.

Mr Dauda’s promotions from chief superintendent of police to commissioner were also subject of controversies.

A ranking police officer who spoke to DAILY NIGERIAN in confidence said, “the speed he got to commissioner from chief superintendent just between 2015 and 2019 is unprecedented in the Nigerian Police Force. The promotions were illegal. They only gave him favours because he is related to the president.”

In March 2018, while still a deputy commissioner, he was exposed in a leaked audio begging former chairman of Police Service Commission, Mike Okiro, to expedite the promotion of former police spokesperson, Moshood Jimoh.

In the same audio, Mr Okiro told him, “even your own, Even your own, I am putting you for CP“.

Barely four months after, he was decorated by the president as a police commissioner.

Spokesman for the Nigeria Police Force Frank Mba could not be reached for comment at the time of filing in this report.

A source at the force headquarters who confirmed the authenticity of the signal, however said Mr Mba was away in Awka for a training, and therefore his lines are “hardly reached”.

Nigerian Professor, Chikaodinaka Nwankpa spends nearly $200k research funds at strip clubs

A Nigerian Professor of Engineering at Drexel University, Philadelphia, Chikaodinaka Nwankpa has been accused of spending a federal grant money in strip clubs and on other ‘improper purchases’.

The grant money the 56-year-old Nigerian Professor spent on strippers was issued by the Navy, the Department of Energy, and the National Science Foundation.

It was expected that that the money will aid in energy, science and naval research, but the fraud perpertrated by Nwankpa who was hardly modest about his extracurricular research was uncovered by the University's auditors in 2017. In total, Nwankpa was found to have misspent $189,062.

Upon being confronted, the head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering admitted the unauthorized expenses, resigned his post, and agreed to pay back $53,328 — less than a third of the overall bill he ran up.

The Justice Department announced on Monday October 7, that the University agreed to a $190,000 settlement to fend off a potential lawsuit. A university spokesperson said that Drexel reported Nwankpa’s misconduct to authorities and cooperated with the investigation. Since then, the school has instituted additional training for faculty and staff and beefed up its auditing controls.

Quote:“Drexel takes allegations of unethical or unlawful business conduct on the part of any members of the university community very seriously and remains committed to being in full compliance with all billing regulations and requirements,” spokesperson Niki Gianakaris said.

Nwankpa has been barred from federal contracting for six months, prosecutors said, but he has not been charged with a crime. A spokesperson for U.S. Attorney William M. McSwain’s office said Monday’s settlement did not preclude prosecution of Nwankpa.

Quote:“This is an example of flagrant and audacious fraud, and a shameful misuse of public funds,” said McSwain, whose office negotiated the agreement with Drexel after an investigation by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service and the inspectors general of the U.S. Energy Department and the National Science Foundation.

The Nigerian Professor spent 27 years teaching in Drexel’s electrical and computer engineering department, chairing it from 2015 until he left. He was among the university’s top attractors of research grant funds, boasting in his faculty bio that he had landed more than $10 million in research money throughout his career.

RHAPSODY OF REALITIES

THURSDAY, 10TH OCTOBER.

WE HAVE THE FULLNESS OF CHRIST

And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power (Colossians 2:10).

When you received the Holy Spirit, you received the fullness of God. There’s nothing of God that’s supposed to be in you that’s not already in you. This is too sublime! No wonder, you’re unconquerable.

You’re not a mere man. Your humanity was supplanted by the life and nature of God.
We have something in our day that the prophets and priests of the Old Testament didn’t have: The capacity to contain the fullness of the Spirit. You’re God’s living tabernacle; when you move, it’s the Spirit of God moving in you. Your hands have become His hands, and your fingers, His fingers; you’re immersed in Him and He in you. He sees through your eyes, talks through your mouth, and moves with your body.

He changes lives through you! Hallelujah!
The Bible says in John 1:16, “…of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.” We have received in all fullness, everything that’s of deity in Christ Jesus. This isn’t just in measure, but in quality and in the variety of potentialities available in Him. All of His power, glory, might, strength and wisdom—everything that He represents, everything that’s contained in Him—we’ve received!

Imagine what your life would be if you lived every day with the consciousness that, indeed, you’re replete with God; full of Him! Jesus said in John 5:26: “For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself.” Jesus didn’t need more life from God; He had inherent life. But recall our opening verse; it says, “Ye are complete in Him,” meaning, all that He’s got, we‘ve received.

You’ve received of His ability, wisdom, knowledge, glory, and have been made an associate of the God-kind. No wonder John submits in 1 John 4:17, “...as he is, so are we in this world.” Glory to God!

PRAYER

Blessed Father, how wonderful it is to be filled with your fullness and receive of your ability, wisdom, grace, power and strength! It’s such an honour to be the carrier and dispenser of everything divine. I impact my world with the power and dominion of your righteousness that I bear, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

#TALKINGSESSION

10TH OCTOBER.

KINDLY SAY THESE WORDS OUT LOUD.

Dear Father, I thank You for Your life that is at work in me, in every fibre of my being, in every cell of my blood and in every bone of my body. My whole being is immune to death, decay, and the corrupting influences in the world!

My path is the path of life, righteousness, joy, gladness and peace forevermore. I walk in the light of my justification, rejoicing in the life of glory and righteousness in Christ! I've been ushered into a life that is beyond the ordinary plane of natural perception.

I flourish in the blessings of salvation— deliverance, divine health, preservation, prosperity and wholeness—consummated for me by the death, burial and resurrection of Christ, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

God bless you

AAU final year student allegedly poisoned to death two weeks before graduation

A final year student of Ambrose Alli University in Ekpoma, Edo State died in the early hours of today after reportedly being poisoned to death.

The AAU student idenified as simply as Eddyson, died two weeks before his graduation. He was said to be full of life before his death.

The deceased's friend, Johnson CBE wrote in his tribute;

Quote:I see "death" as an essential condition of living. I intend to always ask a fundamental question because of "death", what's the essence of living when "death" is sure for everyone someday ?, don't tell me anything about purpose or potential, don't tell me God knows, don't tell me about good legacies because "death" will bring all you could ever think and imagine to nothing. It grievs me to marrow that just weeks to graduation this very guy of mine is late today, he was poisoned to death, before they could fix drip and oxygen on him he gave up and it all ended like that. RIP Eddyson.

Scrap the senate, we need a unicameral legislature - Governor Fayemi

Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti state advocated for a unicameral legislature in his speech at the just concluded 25th edition of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group conference.

The Ekiti state governor told stakeholders to look into the size of government and scrap the senate because the country only needs the House of Representatives.

Quote:“We do need to look at the size of government in Nigeria and I am an advocate of a unicameral legislature. What we really need is the house of representatives because that is what represents,” he said.
“You have three senators from little Ekiti and you have three senators from Lagos state. It’s a no-brainer that it’s unequal, I guess the principle is not proportionality but that if you are a state, you get it automatically but I think that we can do away with that. There are several things that we can do away within the government.
“The Oronsaye report that proposed mergers of several MDAs that are doing the same thing is something that the government should pay serious attention to and reduce the resources being expended on them" Governor Fayemi added.

Turkey launches military offensive in northern Syria with multiple air strikes

Turkish warplanes have bombed parts of north-eastern Syria at the start of an offensive which could lead to conflict with Kurdish-led allies of the US.

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the operation was to create a "safe zone" cleared of Kurdish militias which will also house Syrian refugees. The strikes have killed at least two civilians, Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said.

The group vowed to resist any Turkish advance across the border. It asked the US and the coalition against the jihadist group Islamic State (IS) to establish a no-fly zone in the area to stop "attacks on innocent people".

The Kurds - key US allies in defeating IS in Syria - guard thousands of IS fighters and their relatives in prisons and camps in areas under their control and it is unclear whether they will continue to be safely detained. Turkish ground forces have been massing on the border.

The offensive was launched just days after President Donald Trump controversially withdrew US troops from northern Syria, a decision announced after a phone call with President Erdogan that sparked widespread criticism at home and abroad.

On Twitter, President Erdogan said the mission "was to prevent the creation of a terror corridor across our southern border, and to bring peace to the area" and that it would "preserve Syria's territorial integrity and liberate local communities from terrorists."

The scale of the offensive was not yet clear, and there was no information on whether Turkish ground forces had attempted to enter Syria. Turkey plans to create a "safe zone" cleared of Kurdish militias - regarded by Ankara as terrorists - which will also house two million of Turkey's 3.6 million Syrian refugees.

We recorded 40,630 cases of malpractice in 2019 June/July exam - NECO

The National Examinations Council says a total of 40,630 candidates were involved in various forms of malpractice during its recent June and July 2019 Senior Secondary Certificate Examination.

The acting NECO Registrar, Abubakar Gana, disclosed these in Abuja in a brief submitted to the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, on the mandate and achievements of the council between May 2018 and September 2019.

Gana said three schools in Katsina, Kebbi and Oyo states who were found guilty of various cases of malpractice have been delisted for two years. 18 supervisors were also blacklisted. Gana also urged the government to prioritise security of examinations and officials just as the Independent National Electoral Commission is provided with security during elections.

He noted that NECO acquired 8,000 biometric verification machines before the conduct of its 2019 SSCE, adding that the council needed more biometric verification devices to serve its over 16,000 centres.

Quote:He said, “The Council successfully conducted the 2019 June/July SSCE with a total of 1,163,194 candidates registered for the examination.
A total of 40,630 candidates were involved in the various forms of malpractice; 18 supervisors were blacklisted for poor supervision, aiding, abetting and connivance with candidates to perpetrate examination malpractice.
Three schools, one each in Katsina, Kebbi and Oyo states, were de-recognised for two years for their involvement in collusion and mass cheating.”

Controversial US pastor deported from Rwanda as authorities shut down his religious radio station

Controversial US pastor, Gregg Schoof has been deported from Rwanda amid a battle with authorities over the closure of his religious radio station.

A spokesman for Rwanda's Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration told CNN that Gregg Schoof was deported back to the United States due to "failure to comply with Rwandan laws."

Schoof emailed Rwandan journalists on Sunday inviting them to a news conference where he said he would discuss the closure of his radio station and court cases. On Monday, police in Rwanda arrested Schoof at the venue where he was preparing to host the conference, for "disturbing public order".

Last year, Schoof's radio station, The Amazing Grace Christian Radio, had its broadcasting license revoked after one of its presenters, Nicolas Niyibikora, repeatedly referred to women as evil. The Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority (RURA) announced in April 2018 that it had taken away the station's license.

In a statement explaining the ruling, RURA said the license was revoked for failure to comply with sanctions imposed in connection with the "insulting" sermon. Schoof has been a missionary since 2003 and spent a substantial amount of time in Rwanda, according to a biography posted to his website.

In a statement published online in September, Schoof said he was being "kicked out of Rwanda," after he was denied a renewal of his visa. "When we went to renew our visas, we paid for two-year visas, but they only gave us two-month visas. We appealed to the Director, and we got a final answer: We are being kicked out of Rwanda. Try to logic this out: Church--illegally closed. Radio --illegally closed. So now, because we are 'not doing anything,' they cannot give us visas," he said in the statement.

Immigration authorities in Rwanda said he was deported the day after his arrest.

NYSC Catches 95 Fake Graduates From Nigerian And West African Universities

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has decried the presentation of fake academic credentials and attempt to smuggle names of unqualified persons into the mobilisation list.

Among the last batch of corps members, 95 fake graduates, 60 from Nigerian universities and 35 from West African universities participated in the scheme, until they were caught.

Brig. Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim, NYSC Director General, revealed this during the 2019 Batch ‘C’ Pre-mobilisation Workshop in Minna on Wednesday.

The workshop has its theme as: “Promoting Integrity in the NYSC Mobilisation Process, the Role of Stakeholders”.

Ibrahim said: “It had been discovered that names of unqualified persons are included in the Senate/Academic Board approved list uploaded on the NYSC registration portal by some corps producing institutions.

“This is very worrisome as it amount to betrayal of trust or gross negligence which will not be tolerated,” he said.

He said that the NYSC act prescribes a four year jail term for presentation of fake credentials for mobilisation.

“Very soon, we will mobilise prospective corps members. I want to appeal to persons with intention to present fake certificates not to show up,” he added.
