Spike in LPG prices blamed on global demand, supply gaps

Some industry players have blamed the continuous increase in price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, on international factors rather than demand due to the Yuletide holidays.

According to them, the recent hike in gas prices and temporary scarcity is as a result of the power of supply and demand in the international market.


A contact from Navgas who spoke with The Guardian noted that since LPG is not regulated in the country, prices would continue to be weighed by the western countries, as individual investors have to make their profit.


The source added that consumers shouldn’t think prices are affected because of the festivities, for they would only drop when demand and supply is balanced in the international market.


The Guardian gathered that some gas stations were out of supply at the weekend, and prices have continued to hike, as most gas filling stations now sell 6kg and 12kg gas cylinders for an average of N2,000 and N4,000 respectively.

The temporarily scarce commodity, which used to sell at N1,400 and N3,500 for 6kg and 12 kg cylinder bottles respectively, now sells for an average of N2,300 for 6kg and N4,400 for 12kg at some roadside micro gas sellers’ outlet.


Evidently, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), in its LPG price watch for November 2019, stated that the average price for refilling a 5kg gas cylinder increased by 1.67 per cent month on month and decreased by -4.05 per cent year on year to N2,000.29 in November 2019 from N1,967.46 in October.


Similarly the price for refilling a 12.5kg cylinder increased by 0.40 per cent month-on-month and decreased by -2.85 per cent year on year to N4,121.15 in November 2019 from N4,104.83 in October.

The Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers (NALPGAM), Bassey Essien, who also shared the view of prices being affected by the international market, told The Guardian that Nigeria LNG (NLNG) supplies only 13,000MT to Navgas, NIPCO and PPMC, in Lagos, and the rest is imported by individual investors who are exposed to foreign echange problems and price differentials in the international market due to the high gas demand during the winter season.


Bassey in chat with The Guardian advanced that the combined capacity of Navgas, NIPCO and PPMC is about 26,000MT, so obviously for this to be utilised, NLNG’s supply vessel to Lagos would have to increase its frequency, else, there would be continuous inconsistent supply and ultimately temporary scarcity and price hike.


He was however quick to note that the situation for him, was not a yardstick to judge a large LPG conversion in the country, noting that even though conversion rate hovers around 700,000MT this year, “scarcity should not be seen as improved usage.”

With the demand outlook reflecting that the oil market will likely be facing a supply surplus in 2020, many oil majors have begun to explore the write down of their assets for the fourth quarter.


A write-down is the accounting term used to describe a reduction in the book value of an asset due to economic or fundamental changes in the asset.


According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), its demand outlook remains unchanged, as there could still be a surplus of 0.7 mb/d in the market in the first quarter of 2020, even if all the countries comply with their new allocations and Saudi Arabia delivers the rest of its voluntary cut of 0.4 mb/d.


Though oil prices have remained steady at $65 per barrel since the last OPEC meeting, there are worries for oil producers if a glut happens.

For instance, last weekend, Royal Dutch Shell announced that it would take a $1.7-$2.3 billion write down for the fourth quarter, another financial blow to an industry dealing with oversupply and low prices.

The write down is the result of the bad “macro outlook,” Shell said in a press release, which refers to the slowdown in the global economy, weak demand growth and relatively low prices for gas, oil and for refining margins.

“Additional well write-offs in the range of $100-200 million are expected compared to the fourth quarter 2018. No cash impact is expected,” Shell said in a statement. The company’s share price in London fell 1 percent on the news.

Although Shell didn’t offer a lot of details, it hinted that several of its segments would be impacted by deterioration in the outlook. “Chemicals cracker and intermediate margins are expected to be materially lower than the third quarter 2019 due to the continued weak macro environment,” Shell said, for example.

Shell also said that it would keep its full-year capex for 2019 at the low end of its original guidance of $24-29 billion.

The announcement comes a little over a week after Chevron revealed a much larger $10-$11-billion write down.


At the time, analysts had warned that Chevron would not be alone, and that there would be more charges related to companies having overpaid for assets years ago, only to watch the market deteriorate.


All the while, the industry – at least in the aggregate – has failed to prove that it can turn a profit from shale drilling. Since October, Repsol, BP, Equinor and Halliburton have written down a combined $20 billion in assets.

As Chevron’s impairment suggests, the segment of the oil and gas industry that is arguably struggling the most is shale gas drillers in Appalachia. That accounted for a big chunk of Chevron’s impairment.

The reason is that gas prices have plunged in 2019, which follows years of chequered performances from gas drillers. 

Things kind of fell apart this year as investors lost patience and the bottom fell out in the gas market. Gas is oversupplied and drillers now feel compelled to cutback. Production growth has already come to a halt and could begin to decline.

Looking forward, many analysts have few reasons to think that gas prices will rebound, with the slump expected to last into the early 2020s. According to the Wall Street Journal, ExxonMobil and BP are the most exposed, each with about 12 percent of their total production coming from U.S. gas. 

Chevron and Shell only have about 5 percent of their total production coming from American gas fields.

More write downs could be in the offing from the oil majors, the WSJ reported.
Meanwhile, the market seems to be excited by the OPEC+ deal. Bullish bets on oil futures surged in the week following the announcement from Vienna. Big money is betting on a revival.

But so, perhaps, are the drillers themselves. Baker Hughes reported on Friday that the oil rig count surged by 18 for the week ending on December 20, after rising by 4 the week earlier. Gas rigs still fell, however, down another 4 last week.

The huge jump in oil rigs is perhaps a sign that oil drillers sense another inflection point in the market, with prices slightly on the rise. It’s only one data point, so it remains to be seen if this is a lasting trend, but E&Ps may once again throw more rigs into the field in response to an uptick in prices.

Norwegian Princess Martha Louise's ex-husband takes his own life






The ex-husband of Norway's Princess Martha Louise has taken his own life, it has been announced.
 
Ari Behn, 47, who was the father of Martha Louise's three children, died by suicide, the Royal Palace confirmed in a heartbreaking Christmas Day statement.
 
In the statement released on Christmas evening, King Harald said: "It is with great sadness that the Queen and I have received the message of Ari Behn's passing. 
 
"Ari has been an important part of our family for many years, and we carry warm, fond memories of him.
 
"We are grateful that we got to know him.
 
"We grieve that our grandchildren have now lost their dear father, and have deep compassion for his parents and siblings, who now have lost their dear son and brother.
 
"We ask that Ari's immediate family get some rest during this difficult time."
 

 
Geir Hakonsund, Mr Behn's manager, said on behalf of his family: "It is with sadness in our hearts that we, the closest relatives of Ari Behn, announce today that he has taken his life. 
 
"We ask for respect for our privacy in the coming time."
 
Martha Louise, 48, and Ari Behn, 47, married in 2002 and divorced in 2017. 

Also in 2017, Ari accused disgraced Hollywood actor Kevin Spacey of groping him under a table at a Nobel Peace Prize concert in 2007.
 
He said: "We had a great talk, he sat right beside me.
 
"After five minutes he said, 'hey, let's go out and have a cigarette'. Then he puts his hand under the table and grabs me by the balls."
 
Behn said he put Spacey off by telling him: "Er, maybe later."

Illegal Wire Transfer: Nigerian man, Emmanuel Mong arrested at Seattle airport





 

A Nigerian man identified as Emmanuel Mong has been arrested while trying to catch a flight home and he's now in the process of being extradited from Washington to Stamford in California, where he will face charges that he illegally intercepted a $30,000 wire transfer from Purdue Pharma.  
 
According to Port of Seattle Police, 24 year-old Mong of Savannah, Georgia, was trying to catch an Emirates Airlines flight to Nigeria on December 16 at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.  
 
Seeing there was a felony warrant in his name, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers detained him until police arrived at Sea-Tac Airport. According to the report, Stamford police issued a warrant for Mong’s arrest in 2017, charging him with first-degree larceny, conspiracy to commit first-degree computer crime and conspiracy to commit criminal impersonation, with a court-ordered appearance bond of $250,000.
 
Despite his protests that he has never lived in Georgia and claims that he is not the person wanted in the warrant, Mong is being extradited to Stamford. His Stamford criminal defense attorney, Allan Friedman, said Mong is eager to clear his name.

A Nigerian lady who is quite thankful for life, took to Facebook to narrate how she was pushed out of a moving vehicle by one-chance operators she overpowered. 
 
Sharing photos of the injuries she sustained, Linda Akudo Nwachukwu revealed that the incident occurred on December 23. The Facebook user revealed that her struggle with her attackers began just after she was asked the church she attends. 
 
She wrote;

An aid worker from Bokkos LGA of Plateau state, Jennifer Ukambong Samuel has been abducted by the Boko Haram insurgents in Borno.  
 
Jennifer, an orphan was abducted along with several others, including Hannatu Sebastin Ishaya, in an ambush along Monguno-Maiduguri road on Sunday, Dec. 22, 2019.

The Enugu State Police Command has rescued a maid, Peace Goewam, captured in a viral video where she was being traumatized by her madam.

In the video, which elicited angry reactions from Nigerians, the woman, Mrs. Amaka Ortolehi, from Ngor-Okpala, Imo State, was seen maltreating the maid in most heartless manner.

The incident, our correspondent gathered, led the Enugu State Police Commissioner, Ahmad Abdulrahman into launching a manhunt for her.

"I gave order to my technical officers and anti-cult team. This eventually led to her arrest, alongside her husband Nkemakolam Ortolehi.

"We also arrested Mr. Jonathan Goewan, the uncle to the victim, who out of greed brought her to Enugu from Jos and probably sold her to this wicked family.

"Irrationally, she held her own daughter who she had affection for but was thrusting this very girl on the ground as if she was killing a fowl."

He added that "we protected and rescued the girl and she is going be to handed over to a government agency that will take care of her till we trace her parents.

"They will come down and tell us why they divorced this girl from them; as for the uncle, he has no satisfactory answer, so we are suspecting fowl play.

"This is typical example of Child Abuse, child labour, torture and man's inhumanity to man."

The Police Commissioner vowed that all those involved in one way or the other in the girl child's ordeal would be prosecuted and appropriate punishment meted on them.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Ortelehi has blamed the devil for her actions.

Speaking with newsmen amidst tears, she said "I don't know what came over me. I don't treat her in such manner before. You can enquire from her school, you can ask our neighbours.

Nigerian soldiers and members of a vigilante successfully repelled a Boko Haram attack on Biu in Southern Borno State, an official has said.

An official of the Civilian-JTF, whose members fight alongside the military against the insurgents, told PREMIUM TIMES that 48 Boko Haram fighters were killed in the battle. The military is yet to speak on the attack.

PREMIUM TIMES Tuesday night reported how Boko Haram fighters gathered outside Biu to attack the town barely 24 hours after they were repelled by soldiers.

On Monday, the insurgents, in an attempt to attack Biu, ran over two villages on the outskirts of the town killing two persons and injuring 13 others. They were later repelled by soldiers after hours of a gunbattle on the outskirts of Biu.

The insurgents returned the next day.

At about 6 p.m. on Tuesday, residents of Biu were alerted to the gathering of suspected Boko Haram gunmen who arrived at a location near Kimba, a village a stone throw away from Biu.

Security sources who spoke with PREMIUM TIMES on phone on Tuesday said troops mobilized from different locations to confront the insurgents.

A source confirmed to this reporter Wednesday morning that the troops in Biu and the ones in Damboa converged to engage the insurgents in a shootout that lasted till the early hours of Christmas day.

Backed by operatives of the Civilian-JTF, the battle continued until “48 of the Boko Haram gunmen dropped dead while some fled with bullet injuries.”

“The operation lasted till about 4 a.m. when the soldiers and our members finished ransacking the areas for their dead bodies”, said a C-JTF operative, Muhammed Liberia, who spoke to our reporter.

“We were also able to arrest three of the Boko Haram live and they are currently with the soldiers,” he said.

The military has not issued any statement on the Biu attacks, but another public official currently in the town said normalcy had returned there.

Bulama Talba, the Press Secretary to the Borno State deputy governor, who is currently in Biu with his principal, confirmed that the attackers were repelled.

“As I am talking to you now, normal activities are going in Biu town after the soldiers have repelled the planned attack,” he said.

“We heard that the soldiers have effectively repelled the intended attack, and people are carrying on with their Christmas celebration.”

The Boko Haram insurgency in Northern Nigeria has caused over 30,000 deaths since 2009. The insurgents say they want an Islamic caliphate in Northern Nigeria.

Angry mob attack a rapist in Calabar, dump body in a refuse bin






An angry mob in the early hours of Wednesday, December 25th lynched a suspect for allegedly robbing and raping a girl in Calabar, Cross River State.  
 
The incident occurred on Ekong Etta Street by Okoro Agbor in the early hours of Wednesday when an angry mob pursued a suspected thief who allegedly raped his victim.
 
A witness said he suspected the rapist was trailed by the mob who later beat and dumped him in a waste bin, close to Apostolic church where he later gave up his ghost.

Perhaps, the most shocking decision taken by the government in 2019 was to close the border looking to stop the smuggling of goods such as rice and subsidised petroleum products. The move goes against all commercial and freedom of movement treaties signed under the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). It was also a major red flag in a year where the continent was lauded for signing its landmark continental free trade agreement. President Buhari announced the closure on the sidelines of the Seventh Tokyo International Conference for African Development in Japan.

“Now that our people in the rural areas are going back to their farms, and the country has saved huge sums of money which would otherwise have been expended on importing rice using our scarce foreign reserves, we cannot allow smuggling of the product at such alarming proportions to continue,” Buhari said.

The partial closure of the borders wiped out the gains made with the reduction of food and general inflation in the first half of the year. No goods were allowed to move in and out of the country’s land borders with the Benin Republic, Niger and Cameroon.

Nigeria’s revenue problem continued with the average oil prices below $60 and revenue targets, especially from taxes, hardly met. So, the government has continued to borrow to fund its budget, making the mounting debt profile and servicing charges continue to choke the country.

However, this has not affected the appetite to borrow. The Nigerian Government seeks to borrow a fresh $30 billion dollars which will see its service cost to 80% of the revenue of the country, according to SBM Intelligence. The government has thought up several ways to make more money from the Communication Tax Bill on the floor of the National Assembly to the Stamp Duty charge and the VAT increase to 7.5% in 2020. But it has still failed to enforce tax laws and widen the tax base.

In all, the Central Bank of Nigeria has stood valiantly defending the naira and heavily depleting the country’s foreign reserves. Defending the naira cost more than $3.3bn in the second half of 2019.

What to expect in 2020

Devaluation

Experts have continued to stress the need for major changes with the unsustainability of CBN’s Naira defence. The fact is the country has major revenue issues and the artificial measures to prop up the Naira will definitely wear out. “The Federal Government’s revenue position is alarmingly untenable, and with the modest increase in the National Minimum Wage still yet to take effect, the CBN simply cannot continue to defend the Naira at current levels,” SBM Intelligence said in their report predicting the events of 2020.

“The Naira will be devalued,” the report said. The prediction is based on the CBN governor’s triggers for a devaluation– reserves at $25 billion to $30 billion, and oil prices at $50 to $45.

“If the current trend continues, the CBN will have to take a decision regarding devaluing the Naira to relieve some pressure on the reserves.”

Subsidy removal and inflation

When the All Progressives Congress was not in power, they heavily protested for the removal of petrol subsidy but after they won the election in 2015, they soft-pedalled on subsidy removal.

SBM Intelligence believes the current drag on the already lean revenues by subsidy means the government will be forced to trim the fat and let go of or adjust subsidy.

“Despite the populist stance of his administration, we expect President Buhari to announce an increase in the price of petrol at some point in 2020.”

It means an increase in inflation. 2020 could really bite hard on the average Nigerian with increased VAT, a potential electricity tariff increase and the continued effects of the border closure. Although the government has said the border will reopen on January 31, 2020, many believe the government will offer reasons on why the borders should remain shut.

This is as the minister of Mines and Steel Development, Arc Olamilekan Adegbite, has assured that President Muhammadu Buhari will commission the phase I of the steel plant project which is sited in Tafa in Kagarko local government area of Kaduna.

“Hopefully, Mr President will be here to do the commissioning of the first phase of the project when the time comes.

“It is part of our mandate to encourage investment in mining and steel development which this group has started on; my visit here today is to encourage this investment and also to urge them to do this as quickly as possible to bring the obvious benefit, first to the community where it belongs.

“While we are there to moderate the expectations of the community, at the same time, we also encourage the investor to carry them along, benefiting in terms of employment, infrastructure including social infrastructure,” the minister said.

Affirming the minister’s position, the AIG managing director, Mr Alok Gupta, said,

“We expect to commission the Phase I of the project by end December 2020. We will be mining 5.4 million tonnes of Iron Ore, beneficiate the ore to produce high grade concentrate, make it into pellets and finally into Directly Reduced Iron (DRI). The DRI will be used to make steel billets and will avoid our need to import the same.

“We are also building a 36 MW Power Plant from the waste heat recovered in the process, which will be partly used for captive consumption,” he said.

According to him, with the completion of first phase of project, there will be significant economic and industrial development in the area by means of creation of several allied industries and social infrastructure, while the surplus power generated will further assist in developing other industries and residences and will help in urbanisation of the local area.

Pledging the support of the government of Kaduna State for the project, the Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, who was represented by the Chief of Staff, Muhammed Abdullahi, said the state will work hand in hand with the ministry to ensure that the reap the benefit that is to follow.

“The governor has asked me to assure you of our support to ensure that the people of Kaduna and the government of Nigeria benefit from the project which will provide us with the advantage of job creation, of saving foreign exchange and providing the industrial capabilities that steel holds for our economy,” he said.

Former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki has opened up on his ordeal after being arrested in December 2015 and prosecuted for alleged corrruption while in office. 
 
In a radio interview with Voice of America (Hausa Service), Dasuki who spent 4 years in the Department of State Services (DSS) custody stated that he has no feud with President Buhari. 
 
The former NSA also disclosed that he stopped going to court because the federal government refused to release him despite meeting his bail conditions. 
 
Here are excerpts from the interview below; 
 
VoA: How can you thank Nigerians who have been praying for your release which eventually happened today, you have your freedom?
 
Dasuki: There are no words enough to show appreciation for all the prayers offered. All we can do is to thank them and pray to God to reward them abundantly. We have seen the results of their prayers.
 
VoA: Seeing that you have spent four years in detention; do you feel healthy or you have certain health challenges?
 
Dasuki: Thank God I am in full health. I have no ailment at all.
 
VoA: How did you meet your family?
 
Dasuki: Glory to God, everyone is ok.
 
Voa: So what will you say to the federal government?
 
Dasuki: There is nothing really to say to the government. Everything that happens to an individual is from God. It is only God’s will that will prevail. It is ignorance or lack of faith that pushes some to think that certain individuals are behind their predicaments. Everything is ordained by God. Like you said, I was detained for four year and I am out today. Only God knows tomorrow. The only thing is that there must be fairness. Whoever goes to the Mosque on Friday must surely have heard the Imam always preach for fairness and honesty. There is a reason for that. Everyone should listen to it.
 
VoA: Are you now returning to court to prove that the allegations against you are not correct?
 
Dasuki: Of course, I stopped going to the court because I was granted bail but the government refused to release me and I said whenever the bail order is complied with I will appear before the court and defend myself. I am ready.
 
VoA: There are rumours that your predicament is traced to the fact that you were the one who arrested President Buhari during a military coup and you are now paying for it?
 
Dasuki: I am not aware of that. All I know is that everything is from God.
 
VoA: So there is no sort of feud between you and the President?
 
Dasuki: I have no feud with anybody. I am more than that. I can’t engage in a feud with anyone.

Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to President Buhari on Media and Publicity, has denied media reports that Omoyele Sowore, the owner of Sahara Reporters and convener of Revolution Now protest, was detained by the Federal government  because he is a journalist.
 
In a post shared on his Facebook page this afternoon, Shehu said Sowore was detained because he called for a revolution against a democratically elected government.

Two Canadian rappers Bvlly and Why-S shot dead just a few hours apart






Two Canadian rappers, Bvlly and Why-S have been shot dead in Canada, hours from each other.
 
While Bvlly was killed at around 3am on Tuesday morning, Why-S died in a shooting in South Surrey, British Colombia, late on Monday night.
 
Twenty four-year old Bvlly, real name Jahquar Stewart, was reportedly shot outside of a townhouse, according to police and was pronounced dead at the scene.
 
Just as the city was reeling from Bvlly’s death, news came that another rising Toronto star, Why-S, died in a separate shooting in South Surrey, British Colombia, late on Monday night.

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has commended the Federal government for releasing former National Security Adviser (NSA) Col. Sambo Dasuki, and the leader of RevolutionNow Movement, Omoyele Sowore, describing the gesture as a Christmas gift.

Oshiomhole, Ogun factions divided over Akinlade’s return

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State seems not to agree with the National Chairman of the party over the return of Hon. Adekunle Akinlade to the party.

Akinlade who is the governorship candidate of the Allied People’s Movement (APM) in Ogun State, led his supporters back to the APC yesterday.

But it seems the leaders of the party have different reactions to Akinlade’s return to the party, which he left in December 2018, allegedly for, what he termed, the injustice meted out to him and other candidates loyal to former Governor Ibikunle Amosun by Oshiomhole.



DAILY POST recalls that Oshiomhole, during the time, dissolved the Derin Adebiyi-led executive, while inaugurating a three-man Caretaker Committee to oversee the party in the state.

The Committee, led by Yemi Sanusi, had yesterday said it was not aware of Akinlade’s return to the party.
Speaking through its Publicity Secretary, Tunde Oladunjoye, the committee said it has not received any formal notification about Akinlade’s return to the APC.





Oladunjoye, while addressing newsmen, said the party would get further report, study the situation and respond accordingly in due time.

But to the surprise of the caretaker committee, the National Chairman of the APC, Adams Oshiomhole, joyfully welcomed Akinlade to the party; saying APC is a big family.

Our correspondent gathered that the Yemi Sanusi-led Caretaker Committee was not expecting a welcome message from Oshiomhole to Akinlade.



This, it was learnt has caused tension in the camp of the former Governor Segun Osoba faction of the APC as they fear that the caretaker committee might be dissolved for the reinstatement of the duly elected executive of the party.


Making a u-turn on Friday, Oladunjoye said, “The leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State has received news of the return of the entire members of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) in Ogun State, its governorship candidate in the last election and the collapse of all its structures into to our great party, the APC.”






To say the least, APC is a party of the progressives and provides room for all. The party, at any point in time, is therefore ready to receive repentant members back into the fold. However, while we see the announced return of the APM members into our party as a welcome development, we are quick to add there is a process of joining or returning to our party in accordance with the party’s constitution and established procedures. We, therefore, urge them to return to their various wards for registration and realignment.


“Also, apart from going back to their various wards to re-enroll and reconcile with their people and leaders, it is also important for them to abide by the prevailing peace and decorum in Ogun APC and work under the Caretaker Executive formed by the National Working Committee of our party under the leadership of Chief Yemi Sanusi.


“We urge all those who have cases against the party in courts to withdraw same without further delay. Only this will demonstrate their loyalty and sincerity.”




Meanwhile, Chief Derin Adebiyi has also welcomed Akinlade and his loyalists to the APC, saying:


“On Monday, December 23, 2019, many aggrieved members led by erstwhile governorship candidate of APM, Hon. Adekunle Akinlade took a historic and firm decision to come back to the APC family in Ogun State. We welcome them whole heatedly. Their return will increase our strength and this is another opportunity for us to work on our unity because unity is strength.


“They are no strangers to the party. As a matter of fact, we see their return as homecoming. It is a victory to lovers of democracy and shame to the agents of imposition. You could recall all the things that happened during our party’s primaries in October last year which did not go down well with our members and which led to many exercising their electoral franchise elsewhere. That has become history today.


“However, we are not resting on our oars. The journey has been an arduous but surely ennobling one that will produce victory, in the end, over the forces trying to hijack the machinery of the party in the state”.

Jonathan’s ex-aide, Doyin Okupe lists 7 diseases that’ll kill Nigeria

Doyin Okupe, a former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, has listed seven diseases that may kill Nigeria.

In a Facebook post he entitled ‘7 maladies and agenda for presidential aspirants’, the PDP chieftain noted that these diseases will kill Nigeria even before religion, ethnicity and prebendalism kill it.

According to him, these maladies have plagued Nigeria for several decades and seem insurmountable, adding that “If Nigeria does not kill them, they will kill Nigeria even before Religion, Ethnicity and Prebendalism kill it.
He continued, “These maladies are: 1 Uncontrolled population growth in the face of malignant Poverty.


“2.Disproportional distribution of Resources by federal and state governments. By this I mean a situation where less than 3% of the population consume 70% to 80% of the revenue of government. For example, Ogun State has a population slightly more than 5m but a civil service strength of 50,000(1%) consume 75% of its revenue through budget allocation.

 Niger state with population of 4m has a civil service strength of 40,000 that consumes 80% of its revenue. The federal civil service including MDAs are about 12m to 15m people but they consume 70% of our annual National revenue meant for 200m.


“3. Deriving directly from above it is obvious that governments at all levels must gradually, painfully downsize to less than 20% of their current sizes in a maximum of 5yrs or else they will have to borrow money yearly to pay recurrent expenditure.


“4. Petroleum Subsidy. Payment of petroleum subsidy of N1tr (10% of national budget) and above annually is not sustainable. This is equivalent to robbing the poor to pay the rich.

“5. Uncontrolled executive capacity to borrow money and impose a generational debt burden on the state. State governors, especially, must be severely constrained by appropriate legislation from just being able to borrow money anyhow and for just any purpose.


“6. Electoral fraud and Violence. Inability to hold elections in a transparent and violence free atmosphere is a national disgrace and directly will dangerously undermine our democracy.


“7. Crippling youth unemployment and pervasive cultism. At least in the South West I can say with all certainty that there is no town today that does not have it’s own full compliment of the various cult groups in the country. They operate openly and brazenly. The police is fully aware.


“The traditional and royal fathers are also in the know. They are appeased regularly and negotiated with when important events are to take place. Most of the violence our communities experience come from these youths.


“The only solution is a concerted and very serious efforts by governments, private sector, wealthy individuals and successful entrepreneurs to tackle this national menace

According to him, the government merely bowed to local and international pressure following the outcry over the continuous detention of Dasuki and Sowore after the courts granted them bail.

The statement read: “What is exciting about the directive to release these people? Has this changed their penchant for disobedience of court orders and the rule of law? This government has shown to the world that it is only interested in doing things its own ways regardless of the place of law and democratic order.

“They felt the heat of national and international pressure; so, there was nothing more for them to do than to order their immediate release. Nigerians are not fooled by this and the government knows it.”

Christmas 2019: President Buhari frees 19 inmates including a 75-year-old man and his son






A Committee on Correctional Service Decongestion and Reforms, working on behalf of President Buhari has released 19 inmates including a 75-year-old man and his son.  
 
The septuagenarian was released from the Kuje Medium Security Correctional Centre, FCT Abuja. The man and his son had spent 13 years in custody awaiting trial. All the freed inmates were not identified.  
 
Chairman of the Presidential Committee and Chief Judge, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court, Justice Ishaq Bello on a visit to Kuje Correctional Centre, on December 19th, explained the conditions for the release of the inmates. The release, he said was based on age, inability to pay fine, ill-health and overstay of statutory detention period.

Dismissed soldier and gang members arrested for plotting to rob a bank






A dismissed soldier and members of his gang have been arrested in Ibadan, Oyo State capital by operatives of the Inspector General of Police Special Tactical Squad (IGP – STS), attached to the Ogun State Police Command while on their way to rob a bank in Ekiti State.
 
The suspects identified as Adebamji Bamgboye, Matthew Olagoke, Ahmed Abdulahi, Johnson Ojo and Adebanjo Bamidele were paraded before newsmen on Tuesday December 24, by Oyo State's Commissioner of Police Kenneth Ebrimson. 
 
Three shot guns, 20 live cartridges, three identity cards, four Automated Teller Machine (ATM) cards, seven phones, an expended cartridge and charms were recovered from the gang headed by a dismissed corporal in the Army, Adebamji Bamgboye.
 
The gang which allegedly specializes in robbing filling stations, banks, university hostels, were intercepted at New Gbagi Market, along the Ibadan-Ife expressway in Ibadan where their vehicle was flagged down for a search. 
 
Confessing to the crime, Bamgboye said that he was recruited to lead the bank attack after being assurred that the bank manager and six other employees of the bank will work for the success of the robbery operation. 

Christmas 2019: President Buhari frees 19 inmates including a 75-year-old man and his son






A Committee on Correctional Service Decongestion and Reforms, working on behalf of President Buhari has released 19 inmates including a 75-year-old man and his son.  

 
The septuagenarian was released from the Kuje Medium Security Correctional Centre, FCT Abuja. The man and his son had spent 13 years in custody awaiting trial. All the freed inmates were not identified.  
 
Chairman of the Presidential Committee and Chief Judge, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court, Justice Ishaq Bello on a visit to Kuje Correctional Centre, on December 19th, explained the conditions for the release of the inmates. The release, he said was based on age, inability to pay fine, ill-health and overstay of statutory detention period.

JESUS: THE REVELATION OF GOD’S LOVE


And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us… (John 1:14).


Just as Adam and Eve heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the Garden, in the cool of the day (Genesis 3:8), the Old Testament prophets weren’t left out. Some heard a voice in their spirits, while others heard a voice from above; they, however, didn’t see a form or a shape to that voice.

But when the baby Jesus was born in Bethlehem, it was that same voice that Adam and the prophets heard, that was born in flesh! Jesus was always the Word of God in the bosom of the Father. But now, “…the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us….”

The actual Greek translation of the word, “made” is “ginomai”; it means to bring to existence, or to become. Jesus wasn’t conceived like everybody else; He was conceived of the Holy Ghost and became flesh. A miracle of miracles!

The most amazing part of this intrusion into the sense realm wasn’t only that He put on flesh, and dwelt among men, but that He was the Father’s unflinching, unfailing and unconditional love manifested.

His words, actions and miracles were all love-inspired. Jesus is God’s love in flesh. Love is the totality of His personality. Jesus couldn’t choose whether to love you or not to love you. He could only love you. He said in John 15:9 (AMPC), “I have loved you, [just] as the Father has loved Me….”

This Christmas, ponder on Jesus as the revelation of God’s love for you! Think how much He loves you, to have given Himself as a ransom for your sins. He said in John 15:13 (NKJV), “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.” He did exactly that for you and me.


Make His love your heartfelt contemplation; stay and be at rest in His unrivalled and unconditional love for you. If you ever comprehend this truth, it’ll suddenly awaken in you, your value, and you’d never be discouraged, despondent, fearful, afraid, intimidated, or ashamed, irrespective of the challenges. Your consciousness of His love for you will make you a success and a victor forever. Merry Christmas!

Dear Father, thank you for demonstrating your love for me in such a special way. I’ll forever be thankful and conscious of your love, and express the same to my world, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Though the Patriots eventually won via a last-second field goal, it was really a case of whoever had the ball last was going to win. Elsewhere in the AFC, other top teams disappointed. The Bengals fell down to Earth and the Jaguars go wholloped by the Cowboys. The Steelers and Chargers did admittedly have good games, but they’re going to have to be a lot more consistent for them to truly contend with Kansas City and New England. Even Slay was surprised at how well his team completely neutralized the GOAT.Romeo OkwaraStats: 2 tackles (1 for loss)The Lions shocked a lot of people when they dropped their inactive list for Sunday night. No Ezekiel Ansah. No Kerry Hyder. As a result, the Lions had just two true defensive ends active against the Patriots: Da’Shawn Hand and Romeo Okwara. Okwara’s box score may not be that impressive, but the Lions relied on the defensive end—added just two weeks ago—on over 83 percent of snaps, and he responded quite nicely.The stretch run plays that were so effective by the 49ers last week were completely stymied thanks, in part, to Okwara setting the edge and forcing the rushers back inside, and this may be the best play a Lions defensive lineman has made all season: VOTE:

President Buhari (retd.) has told the newly-posted United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Ms Mary Leonard, that though it is not an easy task to work for the unity of Nigeria, he is doing his best.  
 
Buhari added that his conscience was clear with regard to upholding human rights in the country, saying, “I took an oath and I am honoring the office. He spoke to Leonard on Tuesday in Abuja when she visited the Presidential Villa to present her Letters of Credence to him.  
 
Leonard, during the visit, had said that her country placed Nigeria on its watch list due to the humanitarian situation in the country. She stated that the action was taken as part of efforts to deepen conversation on the issue. In response, Buhari insisted that Nigeria was wrongly presented to the rest of the world because other countries, including the US, did not widen their sources of information on the country.

Saudi Arabia bans under-18 marriage






Saudi Arabia through its Ministry of Justice on Monday December 23 issued a de facto ban on child marriages, setting the minimum age for marriage at 18. 
 
In a circular issued by the country's Minister of Justice and Chairman of the Supreme Judicial Council Sheikh Dr. Walid Al-Samaani, all courts in the country were directed to refer the marriage application of anyone under 18 to a special court to make sure that “marrying those below 18-years old will not harm them and will achieve their best interest, whether they are male or female”.
 
The new order which is one of the social reform initiated since Mohammad Bin Salman became crown prince two years ago, came after an amendment to the Kingdom's Child Protection Law was passed by the Shoura Council in January 2019. 
 
Recall also that King Salman signed a decree permitting women to travel or obtain a passport without the permission of male guardians in October 2019. The decree did away with the need for permission of a guardian to marry, apply for a passport and leave the country. In the same month, women were allowed to join the armed forces.
 
The amendments also granted women the right to register the birth of a child, a marriage or a divorce, and to be issued official family documents and be eligible as a guardian to children who are minors. In January 2019, Saudi authorities stipulated that women must be paid equally to men.

Gunmen kidnap Oba Akinramade's wife and two daughters, demand N60 million ransom






The kidnappers of Olori Regina Akinrinmade, the wife of a monarch, Oba Rufus Akinrinmade, the Orunja of Odigbo kingdom and her two daughters, have demanded N60 million ransom for their release.  
 
Chief Olu Akinsawe, the Odofin of Odigbo kingdom confirmed this development to journalists in Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State saying the monarch’s wife, her two daughters and their drivers, were abducted by some unknown gunmen on Saturday along Owo-Oba-Ikare Akoko road while heading to Akungba Akoko.

Quote:The UK Charity Commission has indicted for fraud the board of trustees of the UK branch of Christ Embassy founded by televangelist, Chris Oyakhilome.

The indictment follows a five-year investigation into the church’s finances.

The inquiry published by the Charity Commission on its website in November, said that the church’s board of trustees was incriminated for shoddy management of the church’s account, arbitrary and curious payments, failure to comply with its grant-making policy, inadequate recording of its decision making processes and serious misconduct and/or mismanagement in the charity’s administration.

It also said that there is evidence the church might be diverting funds of up to N288 million (£615,420) from its UK branches to six accounts controlled by the church’s branch in Nigeria.

The Charity Commission also found that the church, founded in 1996 with over 90 worship centres across the UK, illegally registered three properties in the names of two members of its board of trustees, failed to pay taxes worth over £250,000 on expenditures by employees, failed to secure adequate insurance, and had an instance of criminal violation of British town planning and building regulations.

The commission began the inquiry in 2014. After interviewing members of the church’s board of trustees, the commission, still unsatisfied, tossed the board aside and appointed Rod Weston of the international audit and accounting firm, Mazar, as interim manager of the church in what it described as “temporary and protective measure.”

Mr Weston, in the final report published on November 14, said the scope of the inquiry was to examine the church’s transactions with “partner organisations” including “grants made to a number of unidentified entities and Loveworld Television Ministry, Healing School, International School of Ministry, Christ Embassy France, Christ Embassy Canada, IPCC Conference and Rhapsody of Realities.”

Part of the report said: “During 2009-2011, the charity’s accounts show grants amounting to £1,281,666 were paid to Loveworld Television Ministry; £118,995 to Healing School, £186,616 to International School of Ministry, £10,000 to Christ Embassy Canada, £10,566 to Christ Embassy France, £37,216 to IPPC Conference and £77,266 to Rhapsody of Realities.”

It added: “Documents examined, by the IM, demonstrated a lack of records and receipts to account for grants made and there appeared to be little consideration given to whether the receiving parties had expended grants appropriately and for intended purposes, as was required by the policy.

“This demonstrates a failure to comply with its grant-making policy and inadequate recording of decision making by the trustees which is misconduct and/or mismanagement in the administration of the charity.”

The interim manager appointed a new board of trustees for the church in 2016.

As soon as they got to Isse-Luku which is before Asaba, the assasins rained bullets on the Highlander and they targeted his sitting position which was occupied by the church keyboardist. The keyboardist sustained some gunshots and he is currently been hospitalized in a hospital in Asaba( He survived the gunshots) the Pastor's escorts also survived the gunshots all to God's Glory. The assasins only targeted the Highlander because their target was Papa K, they thought he was inside, other vehicles wasn't touched.

Recall that ever since the Edo born pastor moved to Onitsha other pastors mostly those who are from the State have been fighting him and the fight took another level when Omega Fire Ministries Onitsha bought a 24 acres of land, where they are currently building a 8000 capacity church auditorium dubbed "City of Wonders", one of the biggest in Anambra State and that's where they will have their cross over night. They are saying how can someone from Edo State come and dominate them in their own land. May God save his church.

Four IPOB members arrested for selling Biafra newspaper in Aba






Four people suspected to be members of the banned Indigenous People of Biafra have been arrested in Aba Market by Nigerian soldiers for selling a banned Biafran newspaper.  
 
The men were picked up under the Nigerian Army “Exercise Atilogwu Udo 1’’, now ongoing in the South eastern states and Cross River.
 
Col. Aliyu Yusuf, Deputy Director, Public Relations of 82 Division of the Nigerian Army said the four vendors were arrested by troops of sector 2 in Abia. He gave the names of the vendors as Sunday Elom, Martins Ogwuchukwu, Chineme Obiechifula and Innocent Mike.
 
Yusuf did not indicate the name of the newspaper, but he said they have been handed over to the appropriate security agency for further action. Yusuf said the military exercise has nabbed 86 high profile criminals since it began on November.1st.

Breaking: FG orders release of Dasuki and Sowore






The Federal Government has ordered the release of former National Security Adviser (NSA) Sambo Dasuki and publisher/convener of #RevolutionNow protest, Omoyele Sowore.
 
Abubakar Malami, the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), disclosed this in a statement released today Tuesday December 24th. He said the decision to release them was in compliance with the bail granted the two by the court.

The statement reads

Quote:“The office of the honourable Attorney General of the Federation has reviewed the pending criminal charges against the duo of Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd.) and Omoyele Sowore.

Whilst the Federal High Court has exercised its discretion in granting bail to the Defendants in respect of the charges against them, I am also not unmindful of the right of the Complainant/Prosecution to appeal or further challenge the grant of bail by the court having regards to extant legal provisions, particularly Section 169 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015.

However, my office has chosen to comply with the court orders while considering the pursuit of its rights of appeal and/or review of the order relating to the bail as granted or varied by the courts.
“n line with the provisions of Sections 150(1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), and in compliance with the bail granted to Col. Sambo Dasuki (Rtd) (as recently varied by the Court of Appeal) and the bail granted to Omoyele Sowore, I have directed the State Security Services to comply with the order granting bail to the Defendants and effect their release.
The two defendants are enjoined to observe the terms of their bail and refrain from engaging in any act that is inimical to public peace and national security as well as their ongoing trial which will run its course in accordance with the laws of the land.
I wish to reiterate again the utmost regard of my office for the entire judicial structure of Nigeria.
This administration remains unrelenting in deepening the rule of law and the administration of justice in general.”

2023: Northern power brokers reportedly abandon Tinubu

Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council (OYC) on Tuesday claimed that talks between the North and South-West ahead of the 2023 presidency have broken down.
Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the President and Okwu Nnabuike, the Secretary-General, in a statement, alleged that the presidential aspiration of All Progressives Congress (APC) national leader, Bola Tinubu, was hanging due to tactic withdrawal of support from Northern power brokers.


OYC said it had confirmed that the North was not satisfied with the voting pattern and results during the 2019 presidential election in the South West as President Muhammadu Buhari did not win overwhelmingly.

It noted: “The result shows that South West voted for both PDP and APC, with the latter leading with little margin irrespective of desperate efforts that denied Nigerians from South East from voting in most South-West states.


“The North feels that the South West betrayed them and there should be a new alliance and the moves are on.


“With the recent sack of South West from juicy portfolios and positions, and making Vice President Osinbajo quiet, Tinubu may have seen the handwriting clearly written on the wall; that all may not be well with the alliance between defunct ACN/ANPP/CPC”.



However, the body disclosed that: “Some northern statesmen will be leading a high profile delegation to a consultative but confidential meeting with the Secretary General Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Uche Okwukwu, to cement a new pact between the North her old ally, the Old Eastern Region (comprising of South East and South-South states).


“This meeting is billed to hold in Abia State, Ebonyi State or Rivers State early January”.


It added that issues to be discussed include Nigeria’s security challenges, 2023 general election, the demise of pioneer President General, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Justice Ezebuilo Ozobu, among others.

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari, has reiterated that he won’t stay in office beyond 2023.
He spoke in reaction to a statement by legal luminary, Femi Falana, who alleged that a third term plot was in the works.




Garba Shehu, the president’s aide on media and publicity, dismissed Falana’s claim.


“To repeat: All and every claim that is made that suggest President Muhammadu Buhari will stand for a third term in office is false”, the spokesman stressed.
“President Buhari is a democrat. He respects the Constitution. Any activity aimed at altering the two-term limit will not succeed and shall never have his time nor support.”


“The President will have nothing more to say on this matter – apart from to repeat this statement, ad infinitum – that he will not be seeking, accepting, nor standing for a third term. “

Army arrest 86 criminals in South East

The Nigerian Army on says it has arrested about 86 suspected high profile criminals in the South East and Cross River in the ongoing “Exercise Atilogwu Udo 1’’.
Col. Aliyu Yusuf, Deputy Director, Public Relations of 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday in Enugu.


Yusuf said the suspects were handed over to relevant security agencies for further action.



He said that the arrests were made between Nov.1 and Dec.24 adding that the exercise recorded lots of achievements.


“Troops of sector 1, in 13 Brigade, Calabar, arrested a total of 38 suspects in its Area of Responsibility (AOR). The latest arrest occurred on Dec. 6, when troops conducted snap checkpoint in Obubra Local Government Area (LGA) of the state.


“During the operation, three suspects who were riding on a motorcycle at Okuni village in Ikom LGA immediately abandoned their motorcycle and fled on sighting the troops.



“The troops pursued and apprehended one Mr Francis Ibiang, items recovered from him include one locally made pistol, one cartridge, a machete, two mobile phones, assorted charms and N4,500 cash, he has been handed over to the police for further action,’’ NAN quoted him as saying.


The spokesman also stated that troops of sector 2 in Abia on Nov. 19, arrested four suspected IPOB members in Aba market selling proscribed Biafra newspapers.


He gave their names as- Sunday Elom, Martins Ogwuchukwu, Chineme Obiechifula and Innocent Mike.

“Following a distress call from Chief Security Officer (CSO) Abia State Polytechnic, Asa; troops in conjunction with security agencies arrested cult members suspected to be of Klain Men group, the suspects are- Stanley Kelechi, Kalu Ihechi, Okoro Prince and Chiemeka Nwosu,’’ he said.




Yusuf said that on Nov. 19 in sector 3 under AOR of 34 Brigade, Owerri; troops arrested three suspected vandals in three buses with suspected illegally refined AGO.


“The suspects were arrested following a tip-off after vandalising a pipeline and evacuating the contents at Umuapu along Owerri-Port Harcourt road.


“The troops also arrested one suspected illegal oil dealer, Mr Emmanuel Okechukwu with five drums filled with illegally refined AGO in a Mercedes Benz along Owerri-Port Harcourt road,’’ he said.


He said that in sector 4 in Anambra State, troops while on patrol at Dunukofia along Onitsha-Awka road intercepted suspected gun-runner, Mr Leonard Asowgua who is a Jos-based businessman, with two pump action guns, 25 cartridges and two cell phones.
“Also, troops acting on a tip-off raided suspected drug peddlers’ hideout at Amansea and Umudioka general area and arrested 21 suspected dealers with varying quantity of suspected drugs.


“On Nov. 19 troops in conjunction with security agencies conducted raid to flush out kidnappers and criminal elements hibernating in Ajalli–Umumba Forest in Udi LGA of Enugu State.


“Troops around Nsukka–Ukehi Road general area arrested Mr Oluchi Ugwu who is a suspected notorious drug peddler, and recovered one bag of weed suspected to be hemp,’’ he said.


Yusuf added that troops of sector 6 in Abakaliki arrested a suspected gang of wanted criminals terrorising the whole of Ezza South LGA of Ebonyi State.


“The suspects are Success George,18; Noble Mbam,20; Emeka Ugo,20 and Aja Anayochukwu, 20.


“Their arrest also led to the arrest of one Mr Imeze Joseph who buys stolen items from them and at the point of his arrest, one suspected stolen plasma TV was recovered from him,’’ he added

Quote:The All Progressives Congress has rejected a call by the Edo State Governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki, for the dissolution of its National Reconciliation Committee headed by the President of the Senate, Dr Ahmed Lawan.

Chieftains of the party, who confided in The PUNCH on Monday, said it had become obvious that the governor was not concerned about peace in the Edo State APC.

Obaseki, in an interview with The PUNCH correspondent in Benin on Monday, called for the dissolution of the committee, which among others, was saddled with the responsibility of resolving the dispute between the governor and the National Chairman, Mr Adams Oshiomhole.

The APC had on November 18 set up a 10-member committee headed by Lawan to resolve crises among its members.

The National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Lanre Issa-Onilu, had in a statement, said the party set up the committee in line with the November resolution of its National Executive Committee.

Besides Lawan, other members of the committee are a former Interim National Chairman of the party, Chief Bisi Akande (Vice Chairman); Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Ahmed Wase, Senator Tanko Al-Makura, Senator Kashim Shettima, Minister of State for Environment, Sharon Ikeazor; Alhaji Nasiru Koki, Senator Khairat Gwadabe-Abdulrazak, Senator Binta Garba and Senator John Enoh (Secretary).


The APC in Edo State had become factionalised some months ago with one faction loyal to Oshiomhole and the other backed by the governor.

The crisis worsened on November 12 when factions of the party suspended Oshiomhole and Obaseki.

While the national chairman was suspended during a meeting at the state party secretariat in Benin, the action against Obaseki was carried out at the residence of a chieftain of the APC, General Charles Airhiavbere (retd.), by the Edo Peoples Movement, a pressure group within the party.


The APC had, late November, set up a committee headed by the Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, to resolve the crisis, but Obaseki rejected the panel on the grounds that it was set up by the Oshiomhole-led National Working Committee.

Again, Obaseki on Monday called for the dissolution of the Lawan-led national reconciliation committee of the APC, adding that a fresh one should be reconstituted by the party.

The governor had last week rejected the committee because of the decision of the National Assembly leadership to take over the Edo House of Assembly was part of the issue the panel would resolve.

NWC resolves round only Oshiomhole – Gov

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Communication Strategy, Mr. Crusoe Osagie, who spoke to The PUNCH on the phone, said such a call had become very necessary to ensure justice.

Osagie stated, “As a matter of fact, we appeal to the highest decision making body of the party to dissolve the committee and set up another one. To the best of our knowledge now, the National Working Committee of the party revolves around only one person and that is Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and he just makes decisions unilaterally and then attaches the names of the NWC members to them. So we are calling on the National Executive Committee to look at the pertinent issues that we have raised concerning the rejection of the national reconciliation committee and reconstitute it.

“We can’t have a committee where we have parties in the dispute as members. It just doesn’t follow the cause of natural justice. The National Assembly is in court as we speak with the House of Assembly in Edo State over the plan to come and take over the operations of the state House of Assembly and then the leaders of the same National Assembly that had wanted to take over the House of Assembly are now the head of the reconciliation committee. Senator Ahmed Lawan, the Senate President, with all due respect, and other leaders of the National Assembly are hell-bent on taking over the Edo House of Assembly,” he said.

Recall that the Obaseki/Shaibu Movement, a support group for the re-election of the governor, and his deputy, Philip Shaibu, had on Thursday last week rejected the Lawan-led APC national reconciliation committee set up by the party’s NWC to resolve the crisis in the Edo APC.

A statement by the convener of the group, Mr Damian Lawani, faulted the constitution of the committee, saying some of those selected as members were interested parties in the crisis.

But top members of the party’s NWC and NEC, who spoke to one of our correspondents on condition of anonymity, said the request by the governor was an affront to leaders of the party, including the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).

A member of the NWC said, “The committee was not raised specifically for Edo State. It is a national committee. Why will the governor oppose the committee agreed to at NEC?”

Another member said the party had begun to see the governor’s request as an indication that he was not looking for true reconciliation.

“Obviously, the governor is not looking for reconciliation. Maybe he had made up his mind to bring down the party,” he said.

Explaining how the committee was raised, a chieftain of the party told one of our correspondents that members of the committee were those approved by the party leaders.

“We are not bothered about the governor’s antics. If he doesn’t want them to come to Edo, that is his business. The committee will perform its duties as stated by NEC,” the chieftain added.

Efforts to get the reactions of the APC National Publicity Secretary, Lanre Issa-Onilu, did not succeed on Monday as he did not answer calls to his mobile. He had also yet to reply a text message sent to him on the request by Obaseki for the dissolution of the committee.

Obaseki doesn’t mean well for Edo APC – 14 aggrieved lawmakers

But the leader of the 14 aggrieved lawmakers in the Edo State House of Assembly, Washington Osifo, condemned the governor for serially rebuffing peace efforts.

The state House of Assembly had last month declared the constituency seats of the lawmakers vacant. The lawmakers had opposed the Obaseki’s proclamation order on the current Edo Assembly on the grounds that it was issued in the night.

The leader of the lawmaker, Osifosaid, “There is no group without a disagreement but when there is a disagreement there must be room for peace. Whoever abhors peace is an enemy of peace, progress and development of society. Peace is a recipe for development.

“For Obaseki to have rejected first the Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje-led peace committee and now the Senate President Ahmed Lawan-led National Reconciliation Committee shows he is not for peace. Obaseki doesn’t mean well for APC, for Edo State and for Mr President.”

National reconciliation committee yielding results – Oshiomhole

On his part, Oshiomhole said the national reconciliation committee had started yielding results.

He stated this while welcoming the governorship candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement in Ogun State, Adekunle Akinlade, and his supporters back to the party.

A statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Simon Ebegbulem, said the development was good for the APC.

The statement added, “Only last week, we received some leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party, who equally left the APC in Edo State and, came back into our fold.

“As a party, we are glad that the national reconciliation committee set up recently by the party is yielding fruits.

“We welcome these party men and women and we urge them to join in this progressive governance which the APC promised Nigerians.

“The APC is one big family that believes in the ideals of true democracy, the rule of law and party supremacy. We also want to use this opportunity to urge other members of our party who left and wish to return, to do so, as our party is big enough to accommodate all, even those with divergent opinions.”
