The United Nations Children’s Fund says an estimated 26,039 babies were possibly born in Nigeria on New Year’s Day.

UNICEF’s Nigeria Representative, Mr Peter Hawkins, said on Wednesday in a statement Nigerian babies would account for almost seven per cent of the estimated 392,078 babies to be born on New Year’s Day globally.

Hawkins said this figure is the third highest number of babies in the world, after India with 67,385; and China, 46,299.

“The beginning of a new year and this year, a new decade, is a chance for us to reflect on our hopes and dreams for the future of Nigeria, especially for those who stand to inherit this country; its children.

“As we start each new year, we are reminded of the potential of each and every Nigerian child embarking on her or his life’s journey if only they are given that chance to survive and thrive,” he said.

The representative said, however, that for millions of newborns around the world, including in Nigeria, the day of their birth was far less auspicious, and sadly, was often their last.

According to him, 2.5 million newborns died in just their first month of life around the world in 2018; about a third of them on the first day of life.

“In Nigeria, this was 318,522 deaths; among those children, most died from preventable causes such as premature birth, complications during delivery, and infections like sepsis.

“In addition, more than 2.5 million babies are born dead each year, with more than 400,000 stillborn deaths taking place in Nigeria annually,” he said.

Hawkins said UNICEF’s Every Child Alive campaign called for immediate investment in health workers with the right training.

According to him, workers are equipped with the right medicines to ensure every mother and newborn is cared for by a safe pair of hands to prevent and treat complications during pregnancy, delivery and birth.

“Too many mothers and newborns are not being cared for by a trained and equipped midwife or nurse, and the results are devastating.

“We can ensure that millions of babies survive their first day and live into this decade and beyond if every mother has good pregnancy care and every baby is born into a safe pair of hands.

“That means having well-equipped facilities with well-trained staff who can be there to welcome every Nigerian child into this world safely and healthily.

“This is especially critical as we now only have 10 years to deliver on the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” Hawkins said.

A suspected fraudster identified as Mark Obisesan has been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for being in possession of suspected fake traveller’s cheque worth $10,100.
 
A Ferrari 488 car, two i-phones, one Samsung phone, a laptop and ATM cards were recovered from the suspect who served a 12-month jail term for Internet fraud in the United Kingdom. 
 
Obisesan who was accused of not having any known source of livelihood by the anti-graft agency, was arrested at his residence in Banana Island, Lagos.

The world may not believe in you or expect any good thing from you, but God does. That’s the reason He called you into this glorious fellowship with Himself. Your value to Him is Jesus Christ; you’re as valuable to God as Jesus is, and that’s the price He paid for your salvation.

Therefore, refuse to limit yourself to the world’s perception of you. What your creator thinks of you is all that matters. He sees you at your best; therefore, live your best; be the best of you for Him in your world! He saw what you would become if He gave His life in your place, if He took your place of sin and gave you His righteousness. He saw that through you, His righteousness would multiply and be established in the earth and in the hearts of men.


Hebrews 12:2 says because of the joy—the glory that was set before Him—the Lord Jesus endured the Cross, despising the shame. You’re that joy, the glory that He saw. He had faith that through you, His purpose to make men sons of God, bringing them into oneness with Himself, would be fulfilled. The Bible says you’re His seed, prolonging His days. The Nigerian High Commission in Ghana has been forcefully evicted from its diplomatic property by the country's government. 
 
In a statement released by the Nigerian High Commissioner to Ghana Michael Olufemi Abikoye on December 31, 2019, it was gathered that the property located at No.10 Barnes Road, Accra was reallocated to Amaco Microfinance since 26 August, 2019 by Ghana’s Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources with the consent of Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration.
 
While Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs claimed that the Nigerian Government failed to renew the property following expiration, Abikoye said the reallocation came after continuous violation of the diplomatic property. 
 
The Nigerian High Commissioner said;

Delta man butchers his 'mother-in-law' for not allowing him marry her daughter, drinks poison






A tragic incident occurred at Arubayi Street in Warri, Delta State, a few hours into the new year as a 44-year old man simply identified as Voke butchered his prospective mother-in-law to death.
 
The butchered woman reportedly tried stopping Voke from marrying her daughter Onome, a tomato seller the distraught man had 5 children with before travelling to Ghana. Voke who drank poison after butchering his prospective mother-in-law, was found dead near the bridge after Polokor market by youths who launched a revenge attack. Police Officers from “B” Division in Warri stormed the area at about 2:00p.m on January 1, to evacuate the body parts of the deceased woman and that of the suspect.

It also means that we are getting our first clues as to how the final 53-man Lions roster will look come August.While wide receiver seemed like a need for the Lions entering the 2019 draft, they did not address the position until the sixth round where they selected Old Dominion receiver Travis Fulgham.As great as Fulgham may be, there is never a guarantee that someone drafted in the sixth round will make the final roster. This leaves the wide receiver position wide open as we head towards NFL training camp in a few months. Right now, there are only three wide receivers who are locks to make the roster. Marvin Jones Jr., Kenny Golladay and newly-signed Danny Amendola will all be around this season. After them Jarrad Davis Jersey White , it gets a bit murky. Fulgham is the obvious favorite to make the roster behind them. The rookie is a big-bodied receiver with great speed. While he may not have the quickness to be the type of quick twitch receiver Detroit seems to love, he still has the skills needed to carve out a role on an NFL roster. Here he takes on the puller who is leading up the hole with good leverage and brings his hips through which gives him power. As a result, he is able to disengage from the block and make the tackle in the gap.In this clip, the center is quick to get off of the double team block and up to Davis. Davis engages on the center aggressively and is able to shed the block with ease. He then tracks down the ball carrier on the edge, knocking another blocker out of the way in order to get involved in the tackle. Davis is a bit slow to make his reads, which may be a function of his role in the Auburn defense. This frequently leads him to get blocked, but he engages the blockers before they engage him and this helps him get off these block more often than not. TacklingDavis has a lot of issues with his tackling. Far too often he dives at the legs of the ball carrier. This time, he stays on his feet and brings his hips on contact with the running back. Davis keeps his feet moving and drives him back into the backfield. Davis is inconsistent as a tackler. He has shown that he can be a good tackler, but dives wildly too often and even when he keeps his feet he does not always follow through on his tackles. These issues are fixable with good coaching.CoverageDavis was not asked to do too much in coverage. He mostly drops into the hole and reads the quarterback. In this clip he does just that. Pope Francis apologised Wednesday for his widely-viewed slap of a woman who had grabbed his hand as he greeted Catholic faithful on New Year’s Eve.

The image of Francis slapping his way free from the clutches of the admirer was an instant hit on social media.

A personal apology followed.

President Buhari's media aide, Lauretta Onochie has reacted to a video of former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose dancing with a white woman after being granted permission to travel out for an emergency medical treatment by a Nigerian court. 
 
The former Governor of Ekiti State was granted permission to travel out for an emergency medical treatment in December 2019, amid his trial for an alleged N2.2bn fraud.
 
However after a video of Fayose dancing with a white woman surfaced, Lauretta Onochie stated that it seems the Ekiti-born politician is healed and might not be seen on stretchers during his next court appearance or on his way to jail.

The death toll from the bushfires in Australia has reached 12 with at least four people missing.
 
The deadly bushfires have now destroyed a bigger area and the military has been called in to help fight the flames which show no sign of being brought under control, Daily Mirror reports.
 
A three-year drought in large parts of Australia created tinder-dry conditions and this led to the devastating bushfires. 
 

 
Twelve people have now lost their lives in fire-related deaths across Australia since blazes broke out a few months ago. The flames have been fanned by soaring temperatures with columns of fire and smoke blackening entire towns on Monday and Tuesday this week.
 
Thousands of residents and holidaymakers were forced to seek shelter on beaches. Many stood in shallow water to escape the flames.
 

 
New blazes are sparked almost daily by extremely hot and windy conditions and, most recently, dry lightning strikes created by the fires themselves.
 
There are still more than 100 blazes in New South Wales (NSW) state alone and thousands of firefighters on the ground.

The federal government has been advised to review the closure of land borders across the country to achieve effective results.

The general overseer of the Christian Youth Evangelistic Ministry, Prophet Kehinde Ola who gave the advice said, contrabands are still finding their way into the country despite the closure.

Prophet Ola warned those he described as the messengers of Satan parading themselves as men of God to repent and mend their ways saying the judgment of God is fast coming upon them.

FG disengages 25 ambassadors, heads of missions






The Federal Government has confirmed the disengagement of 25 ambassadors and heads of missions, just after a notice was issued to the affected diplomats. 
 
While the affected diplomats complained that the December 31 notice issued to them was “too sudden", it was gathered that the Minister of Foreign Affairs Geoffrey Onyeama had written to them in November, directing that they return to Nigeria on or before December 31.
 
As some of the envoys pleaded for two to three months extension in order to complete some diplomatic formalities before their disengagement, they were reminded of the tenure extension given to them by President Buhari in 2018. 
 
Ferdinand Nwonye, a spokesperson of the foreign affairs ministry who confirmed the disengagement of the envoys on Tuesday December 31, said in a previous statement that the call for an extension by the ambassadors and heads of missions was selfish. 
 
He said;

Dunamis Pastor, Paul Enenche releases 2020 prophecies, warns against plot to ‘de-Christianize’ Nigeria

Dr. Paul Enenche, Senior Pastor of Dunamis International Gospel Centre, has released his prophecies for the year 2020.

Enenche prophesied that the year 2020 would be a season of supernatural shift for his members and Nigeria as a nation, adding that the year would usher in “drastic, dramatic and dimensional shifts.”
He made the disclosure during the cross-over service held at the church’s headquarters, Glory Dome in Abuja on Wednesday morning.



Enenche also warned against any plot to “de-Christianize” Nigeria, stressing that such a move will not see the light of day.

He said: “For those connected and associated to this commission, 2020 equals a supernatural shift and for Nigeria as a country its supernatural shift. Whether the devil likes it or not what has tied you down as a nation is broken. The shift would be in three folds which are drastic, dramatic and dimensional.


“2020, what will happen in this time in our country Nigeria will not take time, it will happen like a dream. It shall be drastic, dramatic and dimensional in nature.



“2020 will usher us, Nigeria into infrastructural releases.

Tambuwal speaks on plans to divide Nigeria

Gov. Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State has commended Nigerians for their resilience and tolerance in the face of many socio-economic obstacles faced collectively in the country.


Tambuwal gave the commendation in his New year Message released by his spokesman, Muhammad Bello in Abuja, on Tuesday.


Addressing plans to divide Nigeria, the governor said that any attempt to divide Nigeria in 2020 will be futile, adding that ‘Nigeria is one indivisible entity ordained by Allah’



According to him, the travails holding Nigerian compatriots together shall never be torn into pieces by the myriads of problems they cope with frequently.


Tambuwal further appealed to Nigerians to ensure that the rule of law and good governance are not truncated.


The statement reads: “I have said it times without number that Nigeria and Nigerians are one indivisible entity ordained by Allah.



“Any contrived or accidental attempts to foist disunity among Nigerians can only last but some moments.


“Christianity, Islam, animism and other shades of religious beliefs are disparate expressions of our collective strive to be close to our creator.


“None of the beliefs diminish our togetherness as human beings subsisting under one nation with common destiny.

“I am confident that as we move into the New Year, we shall surmount, as we have done countless times, all the challenges staring us in the face and putting us at daggers drawn with tolerance and understanding,” the governor explained.


“While wishing Christian brethren a merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year, he admonished them to reflect on the blessings of the outgoing year and pray for good tidings in the coming year.

We have been fighting on several fronts: violent extremists, cultists and organised criminal networks. It has not been easy. But as we are winning the war, we also look to the challenge of winning the peace, the reconstruction of lives, communities and markets. The North East Development Commission will work with local and international stakeholders to help create a new beginning for the North East.

The Federal Government will continue to work with State Governors, neighbouring states and our international partners to tackle the root causes of violent extremism and the networks that help finance and organise terror. Our security forces will receive the best training and modern weaponry, and in turn will be held to the highest standards of professionalism, and respect for human rights. We will use all the human and emerging technological resources available to tackle kidnapping, banditry and armed robbery.

The new Ministry of Police Affairs increased recruitment of officers and the security reforms being introduced will build on what we are already delivering. We will work tirelessly at home and with our allies in support of our policies to protect the security of life and property. Our actions at all times will be governed by the rule of law. At the same time, we shall look always to engage with all well-meaning leaders and citizens of goodwill to promote dialogue, partnership and understanding.

We need a democratic government that can guarantee peace and security to realise the full potential of our ingenious, entrepreneurial and hard-working people. Our policies are designed to promote genuine, balanced growth that delivers jobs and rewards industry. Our new Economic Advisory Council brings together respected and independent thinkers to advise me on a strategy that champions inclusive and balanced growth, and above all fight poverty and safeguard national economic interests.

As we have sat down to celebrate with friends and family over this holiday season, for the first time in a generation our food plates have not all been filled with imports of products we know can easily be produced here at home. The revolution in agriculture is already a reality in all corners of the country. New agreements with Morocco, Russia and others will help us access on attractive terms the inputs we need to accelerate the transformation in farming that is taking place.

A good example of commitment to this inclusive growth is the signing of the African Continental Free Trade Area and the creation of the National Action Committee to oversee its implementation and ensure the necessary safeguards are in place to allow us to fully capitalise on regional and continental markets.

The joint land border security exercise currently taking place is meant to safeguard Nigeria’s economy and security. No one can doubt that we have been good neighbours and good citizens. We have been the helpers and shock-absorbers of the sub-region but we cannot allow our well-planned economic regeneration plans to be sabotaged. As soon as we are satisfied that the safeguards are adequate, normal cross-border movements will be resumed.

Already, we are making key infrastructure investments to enhance our ease of doing business. On transportation, we are making significant progress on key roads such as the Second Niger Bridge, Lagos – Ibadan Expressway and the Abuja – Kano highway. 2020 will also see tangible progress on the Lagos to Kano Rail line. Through Executive Order 007, we are also using alternative funding programmes in collaboration with private sector partners to fix strategic roads such as the Apapa-Oworonshoki Express way. Abuja and Port Harcourt have new international airport terminals, as will Kano and Lagos in 2020. When completed, all these projects will positively impact business operations in the country. These projects are not small and do not come without some temporary disruption; we are doing now what should have been done a long time ago. I thank you for your patience and look forward to the dividends that we and future generations will long enjoy.

Power has been a problem for a generation. We know we need to pick up the pace of progress. We have solutions to help separate parts of the value chain to work better together. In the past few months, we have engaged extensively with stakeholders to develop a series of comprehensive solutions to improve the reliability and availability of electricity across the country.

These solutions include ensuring fiscal sustainability for the sector, increasing both government and private sector investments in the power transmission and distribution segments, improving payment transparency through the deployment of smart meters and ensuring regulatory actions maximise service delivery.

I do not share the sentiment when some people claim that the outgone 2019 was a successful year for Nigerians. Such sentiments is reductionist and does the harm of making us have a false sense of victory.  
The bitter truth is that Nigeria is still in the throes of economic instability, with more people losing jobs and the attendant outcome of more children being out of school and more families having hard time in accessing basic needs of life.  
In this New Year, however, I will rather ask that Nigerians stand together with renewed vigour and determination to battle the hydra-headed demon of insecurity that has plagued us in the past decade.
We must challenge the inadequacies that made us become the global headquarters of extreme poverty; much as we must work hard and fast enough to eliminate the scourge of out-of-school children in the country. These are the challenges that this new decade has thrown at us and we cannot afford to slumber and submit to defeat.
The problems of extreme poverty and scant investments in education play huge roles in fueling the problems of violent extremism that we spent the past decade contending with. We cannot win the fight against terrorism if we do nothing to reduce or eliminate poverty and illiteracy.  
The reality of this new decade requires of us to recalibrate our approaches and to pursue some tough choices. If failure is not an option, then we must let go of our egos and conveniences.  In this new decade, we must start to do things differently if we are honest about our desire for a better and prosperous future.  
There must be a deliberate effort to improve the material wellbeing of the people, by lifting millions of Nigerians out of the extreme poverty belt at a start, and to prosperity. Government must rethink many of its policies that is sinking more people into the abyss of extreme poverty.
It is incumbent on government at all levels to pursue policies that will provide decent housing to the mass majority; put food on the table; provide healthcare and education. We cannot continue to do things the same way and expect a different outcome.
It is therefore high time we caused a rejig of economic policies that will promote an expansion of the economy and create jobs opportunities aplenty.  At the individual level, this moment calls for more empathy and sacrifice. The New Year and a new decade come with the opportunity to make better impressions in our lives and in the lives of people around us.
I wish to restate that our collective call for rule of law and our history about the struggle for democratic rule did not envisage a situation where judicial pronouncements would be worth less than the paper upon which they are rendered. It is a bad advertisement for the country and its democracy if declarations made by the court are not respected without the executive arm of government agreeing to same.
Any democracy is not worth the appellation if the principle of separation of power is not ingrained in it. In the new year, government should not pretend to be democratic, but rather act according to the fundamentals of a democracy.
Above all, I expect that in the New Year there will be a better observance of rule of law and greater respect for citizens’ democratic rights. While we anticipate a change of attitude across board in the new year and new decade, I wish every Nigerian a happy and prosperous 2020. - AA.

I was drunk, angry when I raped 54-year-old woman to death – arrested Herdsman says






20 year old herdsman, Laolu Isa, has confessed to raping to death a 54 year old woman, Mrs Mary Okereke, in Ebonyi state.
 
Laolu who was paraded before newsmen at the state police command in Abakaliki, the state capital on Monday December 30th, said he committed the act under the influence of alcohol. According to him, the deceased woman insulted him and that led to a struggle before he was able to overpower her and raped her to her death. The incident happened  in Ufuezeraku, Ugwulangwu in Ohaozara local government area on Saturday December 28th.
 
Speaking to newsmen, Laolu said

Quote:” I am Laulo Isa, I am from Nassarawa. I came to work here in Ebonyi. I was seriously drunk and saw a woman in the night walking along the road. I approached her for sex and she started abusing me”
“We started abusing ourselves and I immediately pounced on her and she started struggling with me to free herself. I was seriously drunk at that time. As I was on her, a man who was passing flashed his torchlight on me and I ran away”.
“I don’t know whether I was having sex with her but she was on the ground with me. I did not hit her with any object but is like I had sex with her for one round. We were both on the ground when a man flashed light on me and I ran away”.
“I am not happy with what I did and I want to die. I want to die!, I want to die!! I have never done this type of thing since God created me on this earth. I am begging for forgiveness”

President Buhari approves appointment of Ahmad Salihijo Ahmad as the MD of Rural Electrification Agency






President Buhari has appointed Engr. Ahmad Salihijo Ahmad as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA).
 
The Minister of Power, Engr. Mamman Sale broke the news in a  statement this morning.     His Special Adviser on Media and Communications, Aaron Artimas, who issued the statement in Abuja, said that Buhari also appointed Chief Olaniyi Alaba Netufo as the Executive Director – South West.    
 
The statement also noted that the President has also appointed Eddi Mietuade Smith Julius as Non-Executive Director, South-South. According to Artimas statement, Ahmad is a renewable energy expert, who holds two Masters Degrees in Development Studies and Project Planning.  
 
The new CEO, said the statement, has acquired vast knowledge and planning experience in power sector development.

Bank staff and boyfriend who allegedly assaulted actress Chioma Toplis, to face trial






A bank staff identified as 36-year-old Vivian Okoro and her 36-year-old boyfriend Femi Omomeji, will be arraigned before an Igbosere Chief Magistrate Court in Lagos on January 11, 2020 for allegedly assaulting and inflicting injuries on nollywood actress, Chioma Toplis.
 
It was gathered that Toplis and Vivian were living at 11 Abagbon Close in Victoria Island, Lagos at the time of the incident while Omomeji, head of graphics at the Union Bank Headquarters in Lagos lived at Church street in Ipaja, Lagos.
 

 
Recounting how the incident occurred, Toplis said she was beaten, dragged on the ground which led to multiple fractures on her left leg and injuries all over her body after she questioned the defendants who she met removing the switch from her meter. According to her, this occurred just after the electricity supply to her apartment suddenly went off while she was watching television. The injuries she sustained allegedly led to to two bone surgeries on her left leg and attachment of a metal to the leg.
 

 
The couple who were arraigned before the court on two-count charges bothering on assault and inflicting bodily harm in February 2019, were granted bail after pleading not guilty to the charges. 
 
The case was stalled as Toplis travelled to London to treat herself from the injuries she sustained from the incident.

Tragedy as mother and daughter die after allegedly drinking cleansing concoction given to them by a Prophet 




 



An unmarried Zimbabwean woman and her mother have died after they allegedly drank a lethal concoction that was given to them by a self-proclaimed prophet.
 
According to iHarare, Ms. Sithandazile Nyathi, 30 and her mother Ms. Thokozani Ncube, 51, who are based in South Africa died shortly after drinking a ‘cleansing’ concoction they allegedly got from a prophet named Brian Mpofu from Cowdray Park suburb over the weekend. The mother, Ms. Ncube, had accompanied her daughter to see the prophet.

The report by the office of the Auditor-General, which reviews records of the country’s accounts for that year, said the agency stated that it bought the Toyota Matrix saloon car on May 3, 2017.

But there were no supporting documents attached to the payment voucher such as receipts, invoices, SRV, SIV, the company’s request letter for payment and minutes of the Tenders’ Board meeting.

The report stated that not only was the car’s price above the approval limit of the director-general, its purchase was also not recorded in the Council’s Assets Register or budgeted for in the 2016 approved budget and estimates.

According to the audit report, this is a possible occurrence of waste and diversion of funds for personal use.

To this end, the Auditor-General, Anthony Ayine, called for Mr Runsewe to be sanctioned, in line with section 3129 of the Financial Regulation.

The section states: “Any officer who violates any other provision for which no sanction is specifically recommended, shall be taken to have committed gross misconduct and shall be disciplined accordingly.”

Shady contract awards and payments

The audit report also raised concerns about irregularities in contract awards and payments at the agency.

On May 2, 2017, it said N44.3 million was paid directly to a contractor for the construction of National Research Centre in Durban Tradition, Kaduna, without a payment voucher.
The payment was made in full before the contractor did any work.

This is contrary to the provisions of Section 35 (2) of the Public Procurement Act 2007 and Financial Regulations 601 (2009).

The laws stipulate respectively that “once a mobilisation fee has been paid to any supplier or contractor, no further payment shall be made without an interim performance certificate issued in accordance with the contract agreement” and ‘’ all payment entries shall be vouched for and under no circumstances shall payment be made for services for which a voucher has not been raised.’’

Also, there was no proof of approval from the Council’s Tenders Board since the sum was above the approval limit of the DG, the report said.

It further noted that the contract award letter was not signed by the DG.

It said more than N1 million and another N1.8million paid as 2.55 per cent and 5 per cent for preliminary and consultancy fees respectively could not be accounted for.

Again, in 2016 before Mr Runsewe’s arrival as DG, the Council paid a servicing company more than N36 million for the 29th edition of the National Festival of Arts and Culture (NAFEST), including staff’s Duty Tour Allowance.

The report said the minutes of the meeting of the Tenders’ Board was not signed by any members and that the payment schedule and duration of the payment were not stated.

It also stated that Withholding Tax (WHT) and Value Added Tax (VAT) were not paid on the contract, indicating, according to the audit report, that the contract might not exist.

Mr Anyine directed Mr Runsewe to recover the N44.3 million and N36 million in question, and forward evidence of their recoveries to his office for confirmation.

Payments without supporting documents

The report also noted that the agency could not account for N22.5 million it claimed to have spent on store items, programmes, workshops, repairs and so on.

The report said about N2.3 million which should be WHT and VAT was not deducted from the payments.

According to the report, the payments were made without the attachment of relevant supporting documents to the payment vouchers, such as receipts, invoices.

This is contrary to the provision of Financial Regulations 603 (2009) which provides that all vouchers must be supported by relevant documents.

Not only that, the store items procured were not certified by stock verifiers as there were no stock verification certificates attached to the payment vouchers, also in contravention of Financial Regulations 2802 (2009).

The Auditor-General directed Mr Runsewe to refund the N22.5 million to the treasury and forward evidence of the refund to Mr Anyine’s office for verification.

Multiple calls unanswered

Mr Runsewe did not return multiple requests for comments on the audit findings. Voice calls and text messages sent by Premium Times to his known telephone number went unanswered, just as he ignored our emails.

An eyewitness who gave his name as Omgbidu Savour told PARADISE NEWS that the fight broke between other teenagers and Ogbudu's son who later came with acid to spray on the other kids, leaving them ferociously injured.

Saviour said, "Some peers, 14 to 15 years of age went to Ugaga picnic and have an eyebrow with each other. After the picnic, one of the boy went home and equipped himself with weapons and charm, and on his way going to attack the other ones (the victims of the acid), they discovered he is with weapons and charm, so they started interrogating him.

"After they interrogated him, they decided to send somebody to his dad to come and see as well as hear what is going on. But the dad (Ogar Ogbudu) now came with acid in a container to spray everybody who gathered to resolve the situation and innocent people got burnt by the acid."

"They were more than 27 in numbers and were rushed to the General hospital in Igoli, Ogoja local government area of the state, same night. The perpetrator has been captured by the youths in the community and he'll be questioned before the elders - he has already been beaten with machetes too", Omgbidu said.

Efforts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer in Cross River State, DSP Irene Ugbo, proved abortive as her phone line was switched off as at the time of filing this report.

Jacob Zuma Road in the capital of Owerri will now be known as Chief Mbazuluike Amaechi road. Chief Amaechi is a First Republic parliamentarian and minister. Governor Emeka Ihedioha announced the rechristening today at an occasion to mark Amaechi’s 90th birthday.  
The naming of the dual carriage way after the former South African president by former Gov. Rochas Okorocha attracted public condemnation against the administration. Ihedioha described Amaechi as an icon, whose contributions to nation building should not be ignored.

A driver identified as Williams Kwaghve, 23, who allegedly absconded with his employer’s Toyota Camry Car with Reg. Number SMK 153 DP same day he was employed has been arrested at a hideout in Lagos after about three years of Police manhunt.  
 
The suspect who hails from Benue State, North Central Nigeria was arrested by the police from the Ikoyi Division, Lagos following a tip off.
 
Police alleged that the incident occurred on 14 February, 2017 when the complainant, Abdullahi Jelili, reported to the Divisional Police Officer, DPO in charge of Ikoyi Division, Lagos, CSP Tijani Mustapha N’aaba that he gave his Toyota Camry Car valued N1.5M to the driver for commercial purpose on 14 February, 2017 and that since then he has not set his eyes on him and the car.  
 
He said the suspect immediately he disappeared switched off his phone. Following the report, N’abba directed his team led by Inspector Tope Ijatuyi to fish out the driver and recover the car.  The police team eventually arrested the driver at a hideout in Lagos after about three years of manhunt.  
 
During investigation, according to the police, the suspect allegedly confessed to the crime and said that he sold the car off to a strange buyer and that he deliberately secured the job with the complainant to steal his vehicle. The suspect was charged before the Igbosere Chief Magistrates Court on a two count charge of stealing.
 
Police prosecuting counsel, Inspector Rosemary Ehimegbe told the court in charge No N/61/2019 that the accused committed the offence on 14 February, 2017 at Falomo, Lagos.  
 
Ehimegbe said that the accused stole his employer’s Toyota car and sold it off at a give away price and escaped before he was arrested after about three years of police manhunt. She said the offences the accused committed were punishable under sections 411 and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015  
 
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges and magistrate I.O Osibanjo granted him N100, 000 bail with two sureties in like sum one of who must be a clergy.  Osibanjo adjourned the case till 28 January, 2020 for mention and ordered that the defendant be kept in Ikoyi correctional center till he perfected the bail conditions.

An 18-year-old boy has been accused of killing his 19-year-old girlfriend of nine months.
 
Prosecutors say Lafayette Hodges shot and killed his girlfriend, Lyniah Bell, during a “play fighting” with a gun he thought was unloaded on Friday night in East Chatham.
 
On Monday, December 30, he was charged with one count of involuntary manslaughter after Bell was shot in the head at his home near 81st Street and Maryland Avenue. 
 
During his bond hearing, Lafayette Hodges cried through his mugshot photos, and through his bond hearing. 
 
A judge set Hodges’ bail on that charge at $50,000 but ordered him held without bail for violating the terms of his earlier bond.
 
According to court records, Hodges also was arrested in April and charged with aggravated battery of a police officer, and resisting arrest. Cook County court records said he punched and bit two officers.
 
He was released after posting bail but had been arrested at least twice before the shooting on drug charges. Hodges also has a juvenile history of weapons charges, including attempted armed robbery.
 
Prosecutors said Hodges was out on $2,000 bail in the aggravated battery case at the time of the shooting.
 
According to prosecutors, Hodges told detectives the friend had brought the gun to his house, and emptied the bullets onto the bed before he started playing with it. He also claimed Bell told him “he loved her too much to hurt her” when he pointed the gun at her.
