Onnoghen: Fayose Reacts, Says Buhari Not Different From Adolf Hitler
User Avatar Forum: News
Posted by: Edoman - 01-26-2019, 11:47 AM - No Replies

Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, has likened President Muhammadu Buhari to Adolf Hitler, after he ordered the suspension of Walter Onnoghen as the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).

Fayose claims Buhari acted on a “black market order” from the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT).

“A President who chose to obey a Black Market order from the CCT to illegally suspend a CJN but refused to obey Valid Court Orders on El-Zakzaky, Dasuki and others is not different from Adolf Hitler,” Fayose tweeted via his verified account.

Buhari had on Friday suspended Onnoghen and immediately appointed Tanko Mohammed as acting CJN.

Explaining his reason, the President said he suspended Onnoghen, following an order from the CCT, asking him to wield the big stick.

Olawepo Hashim Calls For President Buhari's Impeachment Over Suspension Of CJN
User Avatar Forum: News

Olawepo Hashim calls for President Buhari's impeachment over suspension of CJN

Responding to the suspension of the Chief Justice yesterday, presidential candidate of Peoples Trust, Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim said:

“This is very sad, it is condemnable and must be condemned by all lovers of democracy. It is an ominous return to dictatorship and a complete violation of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“I call on the president himself to step down and resign because he is leading Nigeria into chaos and anarchy. We fought so hard to install democracy, and we paid dearly for it, we will not allow any group of people no matter how powerful they think they have become to take democracy down. This is not about politics; it is about democracy which we fought so hard to put in place in Nigeria.

“If he refuses to resign, the National Assembly should commence his impeachment immediately.”

“I also call on members of the international community to immediately impose sanctions on the members of the executive branch at the federal government. These sanctions should include revocation of existing travel visas for them and their families and business associates including targeted asset seizures.

Senators angry

Senators who spoke on the issue yesterday said President Buhari had no powers to take the action he took in suspending the CJN from office.

In her reaction, the Senate Minority Leader, Senator Biodun Olujimi, PDP, Ekiti, South said, “Buhari is raping democracy, he is behaving as if it is a dictatorship or military government, he has gone against the Constitution of Nigeria. The constitution is very clear on how a CJN must be removed.”

“ The person he has sworn in will swear in the new election Tribunal members knowing full well that this election is about justice, fairness, and transparency. This election must be free and fair.

On his part, Chairman, South -East Senate Caucus, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, PDP, Abia South said, “ Buhari has no such powers, the CJN should ignore him. They want to cause anarchy in this country. There is nowhere in the constitution does any such power exist. We now have a full-blown dictatorship, and it is a shame on all those who support this government.”

Also reacting, the Deputy Senate Minority leader, Senator Emmanuel Bwacha, said, “ I am still in shock because this is unprecedented in the annals of Nigerian history. We need prayers.”

In his reaction, Senator Bassey Albert Akpan, PDP, Akwa North East said, “ this is unimaginable, unthinkable, undemocratic in a democracy where we have a constitution, a country where the constitution is very clear on the removal of a CJN at any time, this is unacceptable.”

On his part, Senator Rafiu Ibrahim, PDP, Kwara South said, “ it is about creating anarchy, the whole world is watching us, this government is lawless, and we have been crying out loud that this is the type of government we are having. I do not know what they relied on; it will not stand, it is an abuse of the constitution and a rape of democracy.”

I Have Not Had A Girlfriend For A Long Time – Falz
User Avatar Forum: Other Stories

Folarin Falana, the Nigerian entertainer famously known as Falz, says he found success when he started to “showcase rascality” on the internet.

The singer said although he had started making music since 2009, he did not find his big break until 2015. Falz, who recently released his ‘Moral Instruction’ album, said it was “quite tough” to break into the music industry.

“I don’t even think it was one song. I think it was a period of time with quite a few things going on around that time,” he said during a sit-down with Teni on Flytime Promotion’s ‘The Journey’.

“It was quite tough, it’s never easy. I’ve been pushing music since 2009.

“Not until maybe like 2015 (before the big break). At the same time I was in the university. I finished in 2010. It was a period of time when I began to showcase rascality on the internet.

“At that time, the song that was popular for me was ‘Marry Me’ featuring Yemi Alade and Poe. At the same time, I was becoming a well known rascal on the internet. That attracted a lot of people to me.”

Speaking about his relationship status, Falz said he has not had a girlfriend for a long time. The entertainer also said he does not actively entertain thoughts of marriage.

“I don’t really think about marriage like that but I have liked girls,” he said.

Release: Exterminating Akwa Ibom From NDDC Board Is Injustice Taken Too Far

COALITION OF AKWA IBOM OIL PRODUCING COMMUNITIES VANGUARD

25/1/19

*EXTERMINATING AKWA IBOM FROM NDDC BOARD IS INJUSTICE TAKEN TOO FAR*

We have received with great shock the arbitrary dissolution of the governing board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) by President Muhammadu Buhari, this is the second time within three years that the President would dissolve the entire management board of this agency without any explanation.

The Niger Delta Development Commission was established by President Olusegun Obasanjo in 2000 with the core mandate of developing the Niger Delta region, training and empowering youths of the region to curb hostilities and militancy and to develop key infrastructure in the region. The position of the leadership was supposed to rotate between the component state of the region, it is worthy of note that Akwa Ibom as the highest producer of Crude oil has not been fairly treated in the distribution of Management Position in the agency. Such acts of Injustice in the past were the reasons for the Upsurge in militancy and civil unrest in the recent past.

We recall with nostalgia that on Dec 20th 2015, the president woke up in the morning announcing the dissolution of the Barr. Bassey Dan Abia –led board and appointing Mrs. Ibim Semenitari as the Acting Managing Director. Subsequently, it was not until about 10months after that a new board was constituted with Mr Nsima Ekere as the Managing Director.

We are aware that the current action by the President which comes on the heels of repeated cries of fraud, Corruption and Flagrant Disregard to the rule of Law labeled in some quarters against the Nsima Ekere led management, is in line with the president Anti-Corruption fight.

We are equally aware that the sacked managing director Mr. Nsima Ekere is contesting on the platform of the All Progressives Congress to be a Governor and Justice demands that such high profile position of accountability and probity should not be given to someone found wanting in the cause of Public Service.

We are also aware that when a public officer resigns from office, he tenders a resignation letter to his employer who subsequently accepts or rejects such resignation letter. In this case the letter appointing a new management team contains no such reference which means All is not well.
Similarly, if for the benefits of doubt we were to believe that Mr. Ekere actually resigned his appointment as Managing Director to afford him time to contest for his election, are we also to believe that the entire management team that has been replaced also resigned to go and serve in his campaign team?

The Federal Government, through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr Boss Mustapha had announced a year ago that the current board of the NDDC was to stay for a fresh term of four years, and therefore the ouster of one management team member, ought not to have cost Akwa Ibom its constitutionally provided right to a full term of four years.

As objective and right thinking members of the society, we are not against the sacking of the Management team, however we are worried that if certain probing questions are left unattended to, there may arise, a terrible precedence that may leave the president and his anti-corruption posture on the wrong side of history.

1. Till date, the President has failed to tell Nigerians the offenses committed by Barr. Bassey Dan Abia led Management team and the board that was Sacked on December 20th 2015 , neither was any action carried out to investigate or bring to book any member of the board that may have been culpable.

2. There has been no explanation either by the President on the Rational behind the Dissolution of this current board and its management. In any case if the management team has rocked the boat of morality, it would have been welcome development to have the members face the drumbeat of justice accordingly.

3. The President has neither appointed an Akwa Ibom Indigene as Acting Managing Director or Member of the three-Man Management team, it will be the Second time the President will be Short-changing Akwa Ibom State despite being the highest oil producing state in the country.

4. The announcement by the Presidency has failed to also state the duration of the acting board which has the chairman from Bayelsa and members from Rivers and Delta states.

We hereby call on the President to immediately reconsider the current acting management board and appoint an Akwa Ibom person from the core oil producing communities as new Managing Director in the spirit of fairness and equity, in place of the sacked Managing Director. The failure of ONE man should not serve as a punishment for an entire state.

Signed

Michael Akim Udokim
President

Godswill Bassey Ubokudom
Secretary General

RHAPSODY OF REALITIES

SATURDAY, 26TH JANUARY.

EXPECTANT OF HIS SOON RETURN.

…this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven (Acts 1:10-11).

Make no mistakes about it, the Lord’s return is closer than many realise. Don’t be deceived by those who say He’s not coming again; the Scriptures already testified of His return, during which the rapture of the Church will take place. And at the rapture, only those expecting Him would be taken to heaven.

So, are you expecting Him? You can tell from the way you live your life every day. Some believe the rapture is going to take people by surprise, like they’ll be swept off their feet; no! The rapture of the Church is going to be by faith. It’ll be an act of your faith to be raptured when it’s time. That means when you hear the trumpet, you must put your faith to work and go! Hebrews 11:5 says, “By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him….”

Some people will be struck with fear when they hear the trumpet, and fear won’t let them leave. This is because they weren’t expecting Him. The Bible says, “…and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation” (Hebrews 9:28). There has to be an expectation. It’s for the same reason that Paul said, “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord…” (1 Corinthians 15:58).

If you’ve been living for Him, doing His works and bearing fruits of righteousness, happy are you! But if you haven’t, it’s time to make a change, so that when He comes, you’ll be bold in His presence! Your faith will be activated and you’ll be amongst those that’ll be caught up to be with Him forever! “For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord” (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17). Hallelujah!

CONFESSION

I’m bearing fruits of righteousness, giving the lives of men and women in my world a meaning, as I await the soon return of the Master. My faith is effective and effectual, producing required results to the glory of His Name. Amen.

FURTHER STUDY:

1 Corinthians 15:52-58 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. 53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal [must] put on immortality. 54 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. 55 O death, where [is] thy sting? O grave, where [is] thy victory? 56 The sting of death [is] sin; and the strength of sin [is] the law. 57 But thanks [be] to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.

Matthew 24:27 For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

''I Am Solidly Behind Buhari Over Onnoghen’s Suspension''- Governor El-rufai
User Avatar Forum: News

Kaduna state governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has said he is fully in support of President Buhari’s decision to suspend Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, and appoint Ibrahim Tanko Mohammed as acting CJN.

Taking to twitter to react, the Kaduna State governor said it is time actions and decisions are taken in Nigeria without ethnic or religious biases. His tweet reads

“SANITY NEEDS RESTORATION: About time this institutional gobbledygook and regionalization to justify admitted wrongdoing are confronted. Justice must not give way to legal gymnastics and absurd technicalities. I am solidly with PMB on this, as always!!”

The Illegality Of The Suspension Of The CJN:20 Points To Note By Inibehe Effiong
User Avatar Forum: News
Posted by: Edoman - 01-26-2019, 10:19 AM - No Replies

@POLITICSNGR

The purported suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Honourable Justice Walter Onnoghen, by President Muhammadu Buhari is unequivocally unconstitutional, illegal, immoral and grossly indefensible. What General Buhari has done, putting it mildly, is a brazen coup against democracy.

The following 20 (twenty) points are worth noting:

1. The office of the CJN is not a ministerial or extra-ministerial position. It is a creation of Sections 230 (1) (a) and 231 (1) and (2) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) (subsequently referred to as ‘the Constitution’).

2. The Chief Justice of Nigeria is the head and symbol of authority of the Nigerian Judiciary. The Judiciary is neither an agency of the federal government nor a department in the Executive. It is one of the three Arms of Government and is established by Section 6 of the Constitution. The CJN is to the judicial arm of government what the President is to the executive arm. The three arms are co-equals and none is subservient to the other.

3. The President cannot appoint or remove the CJN unilaterally. The Constitution has explicitly stated the procedure for the appointment and removal of the CJN and no court, tribunal, president or other authority or person in Nigeria can derogate from, override or alter the said procedure.

4. By Section 231 (1) and (2) of the Constitution, the appointment of the CJN requires the compulsory involvement of the three arms of government. The President appoints the CJN on the recommendation of the National Judicial Council (NJC) subject to the approval of the Senate.

5. By virtue of Section 292 (1) and Paragraph 20 and 21 of the Third Schedule to the Constitution, the CJN enjoys security of tenure and is not removable except within the strict procedure and for the specific reasons enshrined therein.

6. The CJN as a judicial officer can only be removed from office by the President acting on an address supported by two thirds majority of the Senate for his inability to discharge the functions of his office or appointment (whether arising from infirmity of mind or body) or for misconduct or contravention of the Code of Conduct. Anything contrary to this procedure is unconstitutional.

7. The NJC has not recommended the removal of Justice Onnoghen to the President. The NJC has not exercised its exclusive disciplinary control over Justice Onnoghen. Only the NJC is constitutionally vested with the power of disciplinary control, including power of suspension, over a judicial officer. In exercising that power, Section 158 (1) of the Constitution states that the NJC shall not be subject to the direction or control of any other authority or person. See the case of HON. JUSTICE RALIAT ELELU-HABEEB & ANOR. ATTORNEY-GENERAL OF THE FEDERATION & 2 ORS. (2012) NWLR (PT. 629) 1011 where the Supreme Court emphatically pronounced on the issue of how a judicial officer can be sanctioned.

8. I have perused the Certified True Copy of the enrolled ex-parte order made by the Code of Conduct Tribunal dated Wednesday, 23rd January, 2019. I find the said order extremely offensive to the Rule of Law. The Order seeks to achieve that which the Constitution has unarguably forbidden.

9. The enrolled order signed by the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), Hon. Danladi Y. Umar, and one other member of the Tribunal (Hon. Mrs. Julie A. Anabor), purports to direct Hon. Justice Onnoghen to ‘’step aside’’ as the CJN and Chairman of the NJC pending the determination of the Motion on Notice dated the 10th day of January, 2019. On the face of the said order, the name of the legal practitioner who moved the motion ex-parte is not stated. This is rather strange. Did the Tribunal suo moto (on its own motion) move the motion?

10. Interestingly, the same Tribunal sat on Tuesday, 22nd January, 2019 and adjourned to Monday, 28th January, 2019 to rule on the Preliminary Objection filed by Justice Onnoghen challenging the jurisdiction of the CCT to try him without recourse to the NJC contrary to the decision of the Court of Appeal in the case of NGANJIWA v FRN (2017) LPELR-43391(CA).

11. The law is firmly settled that once the jurisdiction of a court or judicial tribunal is challenged, the only jurisdiction the court has is to determine whether it has jurisdiction. The CCT having been seized of the frontal challenge to its jurisdiction, could not have granted an ex-parte order on the 23rd of January, 2019 without determining whether it has jurisdiction. In the recent case of ATTORNEY-GENERAL OF THE FEDERATION v. ATTORNEY-GENERAL OF LAGOS STATE (2017) LPELR-42769(SC), the Supreme Court restated this sacrosanct principle thus:
"There is no gainsaying that issue of jurisdiction is radical and a crucial point which when raised, is challenging the competence of the Court to hear and determine the case. Any proceedings conducted by a Court which does not have jurisdiction, no matter how well or brilliantly it was conducted is a nullity. See Dapianlong vs Dariye (2007) 8 NWLR (pt. 1036) 332. That is the more reason why when Court's jurisdiction is challenged, the Court must first of all assume jurisdiction to decide whether in very clear and unambiguous terms, it has or lacks jurisdiction. See State Dosunmu Mansion vs Halliburton Energy Services Ltd (2007) 2 NWLR [pt.108) 211; Nnonye v Anyichie (2005) 2 NWLR (pt. 910) 623. Per SANUSI, J.S.C. (p. 43-45, pp. D - A).

12. The CCT, without determining whether it has jurisdiction over Justice Onnoghen as required by law, proceeded to give a flagrantly illegal order purporting to suspend the CJN from office. That order, with the greatest respect, is reminiscent of the inglorious order given by Justice Bassey Ikpeme stopping further announcement of results of the June 12, 1993 presidential election which crystalized into the criminal nullification of the June 12, 1993 election by the Babangida junta."

13. I have read the long statement made by President Buhari while swearing-in Hon. Justice Ibrahim Tanko Mohammed as the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria. Buhari struggled unsuccessfully to justify his unlawful action by relying on the order of the CCT. The Constitution does not say that the President shall suspend the CJN based on the order of a court or tribunal. It is a desecration of our Constitution for Buhari to suspend Justice Onnoghen.

14. Those arguing that the President merely suspended the CJN and has not removed him are either oblivious of the law or willfully mischievous. The CJN is not an appointee of the President and does not hold office at the pleasure of the President.

15. President Buhari cannot suspend the CJN. The CCT cannot give an order directing the President to remove or suspend the CJN. The CCT cannot ask the CJN to ‘’step aside’’. This conspiratorial attack on the institution of the Judiciary is a dangerous precedent. Can a judge give an order suspending the President from office without recourse to the National Assembly? If the answer is in the negative, why should the President suspend the CJN whose tenure is constitutionally protected without recourse to the NJC and the Senate as prescribed in the Constitution?

16. The CCT Chairman, Danladi Umar, is himself a subject of a pending criminal charge filed by Mr. Festus Keyamo at the Federal High Court on behalf of the EFCC. The CCT Chairman despite the pendency of the criminal charges against him, has not stepped aside and has not been suspended.

17. Mr. Okoi Obono-obla, the President’s aide on Public Prosecutions, has not been fired, arrested or prosecuted despite his indictment by the House of Representatives for certificate forgery as attested publicly by the West African Examination Council. Mr. Maina is yet to be prosecuted for allegedly stealing pension funds. There are myriads of odiferous corruption cases against people and officials who are close to this President. Yet, Buhari continues to shield alleged criminals who are his friends and party men. Mr. Buhari is accusing Justice Onnoghen of failure to declare his assets, however, it is on record that Buhari’s own asset declaration is still shrouded in secrecy, and has not been publicly disclosed as he vehemently promised in 2015. What could be more hypocritical than this?

18. One wonders whether a single Justice of the Supreme Court can determine the decision of the court. The Supreme Court sits in a panel of five or seven Justices. If a decision of the Supreme Court is fraudulent procured through bribery, it is only logical to infer that all or majority of the members of the panel were bribed. I am not holding brief for Justice Onnoghen. However, given the delay that greeted the appointment of Justice Onnoghen, one is tempted to ask whether his security clearance was compromised?

19. Prof. Itse Sagay has stated that the suspension of Justice Onnoghen is constitutional because the President is empowered to remove the CJN for breach of the Code of Conduct. The learned silk, with respect, is turning the law on its head. That line of argument is inconsistent with the right to presumption of innocence enshrined in Section 36(5) of the Constitution. Justice Onnoghen has not been convicted by any court or tribunal. It is therefore preposterous to say that the President can remove him for violating the Code of Conduct.

20. Let me end by submitting that the atrocious, unconscionable, unconstitutional and duplicitous suspension of the CJN by this vicious and totalitarian regime has eroded our democracy. We all have a duty to oppose and resist it, not for the sake of Justice Onnoghen, but for the sake of posterity and the verdict of history. We should not excuse or defend this crass impunity because of political expediency.

Corruption must be tackled, but not by corrupt means. We must send a message to President Buhari that Nigeria is greater than him.

Why Buhari hurriedly sacked CJN – Investigation

More facts emerged in Abuja on Saturday on why Buhari could not wait for the court to determine the fate of the CJN.

Onnoghen, it was gathered, was billed to inaugurate judges that will adjudicate over the conduct of the 2019 elections in the country.

The suspended judge had fixed Saturday (today) for the inauguration of the election petition panels.

Details of tomorrow’s election panels to be sworn in, according to a dependable sources at the Supreme Court are 250 judges.

The source said, “There are a total of 250 members who would sit on the election panels.  The panels comprise National Assembly Election Petition Tribunals, Governorship Election Petition Tribunals, and State Assembly Election Petition Tribunals.

“His sudden removal was aimed at either stopping the event or removing some judges on the lists. That is what will happen.”

It was gathered that judges that would make the panels had arrived Abuja, with the hope that they would be inaugurated on Saturday.

CJN’s Suspension: Olawepo-Hashim Seeks international sanctions against Buhari, others

Presidential candidate of Peoples Trust (PT) in the February 16, 2019 election, Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim has called for international sanctions against officials of the executive arm of the Federal Government of Nigeria, declaring that the suspension of the Chief Justice of the Federation (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen, by President Muhammadu Buhari was a decent to full-blown dictatorship.

The Presidential hopeful in a statement on Friday, said that the development was an aberration to the laws of Nigeria and an indication that the country had again fallen into dictatorship.

He said: “This is a clear indication that we have returned to full blown dictatorship. Following the suspension of the Chief Justice of the Federation, we are seeing a full-blown dictatorship in Nigeria. It is an abyss, an aberration and a clear violation of our laws.

“We will not allow Nigeria to fall into dictatorship anymore.

“I call on all lovers of Nigeria and lovers of democracy and the international community to immediately impose sanctions on officials of the executive arm of government, their families, including their friends

“I call on all lovers of Nigeria and lovers of democracy and the international community to immediately impose sanctions on officials of the executive arm of government, their families, including their friends and associates.”

Olawepo Hashim enumerated the sanctions to be imposed on officials of the Buhari government to include an immediate travel ban on executive officeholders at the federal level, freeze on their bank accounts and the refusal of visa, including on health grounds “to members of the executive arm of government, their friends, families and associates.”

He also called on President Buhari to immediately resign from office on account of his violation of the 1999 Constitution, which he said the President swore to uphold.

He said: “I call on President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately step down as President. This is a violation of our constitution and he should resign immediately.”

A 16-year-old girl escaped being raped after her attacker was attacked by a colony of ants.
Toni Irawan, 29, approached the 16-year-old girl identified by her initials A.S. and asked her to go for a drive around Sukamaju, South Sulawesi province, in Indonesia. During the drive, Irawan allegedly asked the girl for sex and she refused.
She tried to escape when he stopped the car but he dragged her into some nearby bushes and made to rape her.
But a colony of ants attacked them and sent the attacker running, thereby saving the girl from a horrific sexual assault.
The girl managed to get up and run to nearby houses to call for help.
Sukamaju police chief Iptu Alimin Pammu told local media that Irawan has since been arrested and is currently on remand as the investigation continues.
If found guilty, he faces between three and 15 years in prison.

President Buhari speaks on why he suspended Justice Walter Onnoghen

Earlier today, President Buhari suspended embattled Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen and appointed Justice Tanko Muahammad as the acting CJN. While swearing in Justice Muhammad, President Buhari gave reasons for Onnoghen's suspension. He stated this in his speech during the swearing-in ceremony. Read the full text below...

Quote:A short while ago, I was served with an Order of the Code of Conduct Tribunal issued on Wednesday 23rd January 2019, directing the suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Honourable Justice Walter Nkanu Samuel Onnoghen from office pending final determination of the cases against him at the Code of Conduct Tribunal and several other fora relating to his alleged breach of the Code of Conduct for Public Officers.
2. The nation has been gripped by the tragic realities of no less a personality than the Chief Justice of Nigeria himself becoming the accused person in a corruption trial since details of the petition against him by a Civil Society Organization first became public about a fortnight ago.
3. Although the allegations in the petition are grievous enough in themselves, the security agencies have since then traced other suspicious transactions running into millions of dollars to the CJN’s personal accounts, all undeclared or improperly declared as required by law.
4. Perhaps more worrisome is the Chief Justice of Nigeria’s own written admission to the charges that he indeed failed to follow the spirit and letter of the law in declaring his assets, citing ’’mistake’’ and ’’forgetfulness’’ which are totally unknown to our laws as defences in the circumstances of his case.
5. One expected that with his moral authority so wounded, by these serious charges of corruption, more so by his own written admission, Mr. Justice Walter Onnoghen would have acted swiftly to spare our Judicial Arm further disrepute by removing himself from superintending over it while his trial lasted.
6. Unfortunately, he has not done so. Instead, the nation has been treated to the sordid spectacle of a judicial game of wits in which the Chief Justice of Nigeria and his legal team have made nonsense of the efforts of the Code of Conduct Tribunal to hear the allegation on merit and conclude the trial as quickly as possible considering the nature of the times in which we live.
7. Whether deliberately or inadvertently, we have all seen the full weight of the Chief Justice of Nigeria descend on the tender head of one of the organs of justice under his control. There is simply no way the officers of that court, from the Chairman to the bailiffs, can pretend to be unaffected by the influence of the leader of the Judiciary.
8. Not only the trial court, but others have been put on the spot. Practically every other day since his trial commenced, the nation has witnessed various courts granting orders and counter-orders in favour of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, all of them characterised by an unholy alacrity between the time of filing, hearing and delivery of judgment in same.
9. The real effect has been a stalling of the trial of Justice Onnoghen, helped along by lawyers who insist that these orders, whether right or wrong are technically valid, and must be obeyed till an appellate Court says otherwise. No doubt that it is the proper interpretation, but is it right disposition for our nation?.
10. Nigeria is a constitutional democracy and no one must be, or be seen to be, above the law. Unfortunately, the drama around the trial of the Chief Justice of Nigeria has challenged that pillar of justice in the perception of the ordinary man on the street. For it is certain that no ordinary Nigerian can get the swift and special treatment Justice Onnoghen has enjoyed from his subordinates and privies in our Judicature.
11. In the midst of all these distracting events, the essential question of whether the accused CJN actually has a case to answer has been lost in the squabble over the form and nature of his trial. This should not be so.
12. If Justice cannot be done and clearly seen to be done, society itself is at risk of the most unimaginable chaos. As a Government, we cannot stand by wailing and wringing our hands helplessly but give our full backing and support to those brave elements within the Judiciary who act forthrightly, irrespective of who is involved.
13. As you are all aware, the fight against corruption is one of the tripod of policies promised to Nigerians by this administration. Needless to say that it is an existential Policy which must be given adequate attention and commitment by all the three arms of government. The efforts of the Executive will amount to nothing without the cooperation of the Legislature and especially the Judiciary.
14. It is no secret that this government is dissatisfied with the alarming rate in which the Supreme Court of Nigeria under the oversight of Justice Walter Onnoghen has serially set free, persons accused of the most dire acts of corruption, often on mere technicalities, and after quite a number of them have been convicted by the trial and appellate courts.
15. Since there is nothing the Executive Arm can do after the apex court of the land has spoken on any matter, several of these individuals walk free among us today, enjoying what are clearly the proceeds of the corruption which for so long has defeated the efforts of this nation to develop and prosper.
16. It is against this background that I have received the Order of the Code of Conduct Tribunal directing me to suspend the Chief Justice pending final determination of the cases against him. It also explains why I am not only complying immediately, but with some degree of relief for the battered sensibilities of ordinary Nigerians whose patience must have become severely over-taxed by these anomalies.
17. In line with this administration’s avowed respect for the Rule of Law, I have wholeheartedly obeyed the Order of the Code of Conduct Tribunal dated 23rd January 2019.
18. Accordingly, I hereby suspend the Honourable Mr. Justice Walter Nkanu Samuel Onnoghen, GCON as the Chief Justice of Nigeria pending final determination of the case against him at the Code of Conduct Tribunal.
19. In further compliance with the same Order of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, I hereby invite Honourable Justice Ibrahim Tanko Mohammed JSC, being the next most Senior Justice in the Supreme Court, to come forward to take the Judicial Oath as Chief Justice of Nigeria in an Acting Capacity.
20. Fellow Nigerians, we can only stand a chance to win the fight against Corruption, and position our dear nation for accelerated development when we stand together to contend against it.
Thank you and may God bless our country.

Ijaw Youth Council Condemns Suspension Of CJN Onnoghen

POLITICSNGR
Below is a statement made available to PoliticsNGR by the National President of the Ijaw Youth Council, Pereotubo Roland Oweilaemi;

"The suspension of the Chief Justice of the Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen is an abuse of office taken too far. President Buhari has suspended the Constitution thereby applying fascist rule. He has no power whatsoever under our democracy to unilaterally suspend CJN without the impute of the National Assembly, especially the Senate.

The Constitution under section 292 is very clear on the procedure to remove a judge, especially CJN or CJ. This unconstitutional act of Mr. President has demonstrated that the government is pursuing an illicit agenda against the judiciary. This is a dictatorship in the highest order. It means even the Nigerian Constitution has been suspended.

Nigerians need to rise up in unionism to defend our democracy. Buhari's onslaught against democracy must be resisted by men of goodwill. No doubt that Buhari has let loose full blown dictatorship where hard and fast rules have been introduced in place of our Constitution.

As for us in the Niger Delta, this is a direct assault on our collective aspirations to live in a united Nigeria. We shall resist this discriminatory action of the present government even with the last drop of our blood. Nigeria belongs to all of us therefore, we will no longer allow ourselves to be treated as second fiddle human beings.

Mr. President should review his action in the best in interest of our corporate existence and revise the illegal suspension of the CJN with immediate effect. If Niger Delta man is not good enough to occupy top national office under Buhari then we may not guarantee peace in the oil sector.

IYC is calling on the international community to prevail on the Buhari-led government to back down on some of his divisive, discriminatory and unconstitutional actions before he sets the Country on fire. Nigeria is moving to the cliff. The end of democracy is in sight if urgent action is not taken to stop Buhari from destroying our hard earned democracy. After all, he is benefiting from his wrong and so he didn't value the importance of democracy to Nigerians.

Swift response by Police Operatives in Zaki Biam led to the arrest of two suspects who mentioned one Solomon as their gang leader, the gang leader however, died while exchanging fire with the Police in a bid to evade arrest.

Buhari Has Insulted The Constitution – Agbakoba Reacts To Cjn’s Suspension
User Avatar Forum: News
Posted by: Edoman - 01-26-2019, 02:27 AM - Replies (1)

Buhari had on Friday suspended Onnoghen and immediately appointed Tanko Mohammed as acting CJN.
Explaining his reason, the President said he suspended Onnoghen, following an order from the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, asking him to wield the big stick.
In a statement forwarded to DAILY POST, Agbakoba made it clear that Buhari’s action “is the most brazen assault on Nigeria’s constitutional history” and criticized Mohammed for accepting to be sworn in.
“President Muhammadu Buhari’s suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, is the most brazen assault on Nigeria`s constitutional history.
“The President has obviously not listened to the advice of the Hon. Attorney General of the Federation or the Attorney General of the Federation has misadvised him or both.
“President Buhari claims that the suspension of the Chief Justice Onnoghen is pending the determination of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT. This is simply not true. The CCT itself adjourned proceedings in respect of Justice Onnoghen`s matter in order to determine if it had jurisdiction to try Justice Onnoghen. The President`s decision contravenes the Ruling of the CCT.
“There are at least six (6) pending cases in superior courts of Nigeria and one in the Court of Appeal. All these cases ruled that Justice Onnoghen should remain in office pending when all cases against him are resolved. These Rulings bind the President of Nigeria. In any case Section 292 of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria sets out the procedure for removing or suspending the Chief Justice of Nigeria. The power to suspend or remove the Chief Justice of Nigeria vests in the Senate side of the National Assembly.
“For all these reasons the purported suspension of Chief Justice Onnoghen is the gravest insult to Nigerian constitution in history. It is difficult to understand how President Buhari will expect my vote of confidence in the February polls if he wantonly denigrates and desecrates our Constitution.
“I call on all Nigerians to take the strongest possible view of the President`s conduct. I am shocked that Mr. Justice Mohammed Tanko would have offered himself to be sworn in as the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria.
“I call on the Chief Justice of Nigeria to refuse to be pushed out of office. The NBA must rise to resist this assault to our constitution.
Our judges must rise; Civil Society Organizations must rise. This is potentially the beginning of our descent into constitutional anarchy.”

Saraki Reacts To CJN Onnoghen Suspension, Coup Against Democracy
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion
Posted by: Edoman - 01-26-2019, 02:22 AM - Replies (1)

POLITICSNGR

Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki has described the suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Walter Onoghen by President Muhammadu Buhari, as a coup against democracy and a deliberate attempt to endanger our hard-won democracy.

PoliticsNGR gathered that Saraki, in a statement personally signed by him stated that the suspension was another act of desperation by President Buhari. He noted that by the suspension of the CJN, Buhari has acted outside the provision of the constitution, has exercised the powers which he does not have and that this action amounted to gross misconduct.

“This is an action aimed at undermtining the nation’s judiciary, subverting the constitution, intimidating judges of all the courts of record, and creating uncertainty in the electoral process, thereby laying the foundation for influencing the outcome of litigations that might arise from next month’s elections.

“There are already the general belief that this hasty action was taken to pre-empt the already scheduled inauguration of election petition tribunals by Hon. Justice Onoghen and to destroy national institutions that are perceived to be unco-operative in his bid to manipulate the electoral process leading to next month’s general elections.

“By unilaterally suspending the CJN without following the provision of the constitution, President Buhari has taken an action which amounted to gross misconduct. He has simply sent a dangerous signal to the entire world that Nigeria is no longer a democratic nation and that we have returned to the old, jaded era of military dictatorship .

“Our constitution makes no provision for suspension of the nation’s highest judicial officer. The constitution provides a clear process for removal of the CJN and specify the roles of the three arms of government, beginning from the National Judicial Council (NJC), the National Assembly and lastly, the Presidency, have different roles to play in that process. There is no condition under which the President can usurp the powers of other arms of government. I do not know where the President and his advisers got this idea of suspending the CJN on the so-called order of the Code of Conduct Tribunal but this is novel, disingenuous and alien to our laws.

“The President and his team must have seen this so-called suspension as a short-cut to getting Hon. Justice Onnoghen out of the way since the appellate court has eventually stopped the CCT from continuing with the trial of the CJN. It is strange that President Buhari is claiming to be taking orders from a Tribunal which has been ordered by a superior court to halt all actions on the trial.

“With this action, President Buhari has initiated a process the consequence of which nobody can predict. They have precipitated a constitutional crisis.

“At this point, all democratic institutions in the country, the international community and democrats across the world should rise against this blatant act of impunity. We should jointly condemn this retrogressive, uncivilized and despotic measure”, Saraki stated.

He however called on President Buhari to immediately reverse this decision and allow the due process of law to take its natural course in determining the guilt or otherwise as well as the suitability of Hon. Justice Onnoghen to continue as the head of the nation’s judiciary.

Onnoghen’s removal: Begin impeachment process on Buhari, CUPP tells N’Assembly

[Image: Saraki-Ekweremadu-and-Dogara-1.jpg?resize=650%2C450]The Coalition of United Poliical Parties, (CUPP), has urged the national assembly to reconvene immediately and begin impeachment move against  President Muhammadu Buhari for suspending the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen.
Spokesman of CUPP, Imo Ugochinyere, said this in a statement made available to journalists in Abuja.
According to him, “The Senate should reconvene now and start impeachment process against the President for acting against the provision of the Constitution he swore to uphold.

“A man who rode to power on the basis of respect for the rule law and fundamental principles of democracy has chosen to play to the gallery of dictatorship to rig elections.  Let’s see how it goes.

“But we know that this is going to be the beginning of democracy in Nigeria. The democratic institutions will fight back. Trust me it is the beginning of democracy in Nigeria. Out of adversity comes strength.”

'CJN Suspension Is A Coup Against The Judiciary' - Nigerian Bar Association
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion
Posted by: Edoman - 01-25-2019, 10:16 PM - No Replies

COUP AGAINST THE NIGERIAN JUDICIARY AND SUSPENSION OF THE NIGERIAN CONSTITUTION

1. The news media has been awash this evening with the news of the purported suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Honorable Mr. Justice Walter S C Onnoghen, GCON by President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR and the swearing in of Hon Justice Ibrahim Tanko Mohammed as the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria. We are told that this was pursuant to an Ex-Parte Order that was issued by the Code of Conduct Tribunal on Wednesday, 23 January 2019.

2. The Nigerian Bar Association unequivocally rejects and condemns this attempted coup against the Nigerian Judiciary and evident suspension of the Nigerian Constitution by the Executive arm of the Federal Government. The action of the Executive portends a slide into anarchy and complete deconstruction of the Rule of Law and due process. It amounts to an absolute breach of the Constitution and the usurpation of the powers of the Senate and the National Judicial Council.

3. It is unfortunate that the Executive Branch of Government purports to suspend the CJN on the basis of an alleged ex-parte order of the Code of Conduct Tribunal – the same Tribunal that, to the knowledge of the Executive, had, only the previous day, Tuesday, 22 January 2019 adjourned its proceedings to Monday, 28 January 2019 and has before it a Motion on Notice that is yet to be argued, seeking the same reliefs as were contained in the purported ex-parte application, to wit, the suspension of the CJN, amongst others.

4. We call on the Federal Government to avert the looming constitutional crisis precipitated by its ill-advised action. In particular, the Nigerian Bar Association demands the reversal of the purported suspension of Honorable Mr. Justice Walter S C Onnoghen, GCON. We also call on the National Assembly to assert its constitutional authority and powers and prevent this slide into chaos and erosion of the Rule of Law.

Paul Usoro, SAN President

BREAKING:"A Brazen Dictatorial Act" - Atiku Reacts To Buhari's Suspension Of CJN
User Avatar Forum: News

@POLITICSNGR

PDP Presidential Candidate, Atiku Abubakar has reacted to the suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Below is the full statement made available to PoliticsNGR:

"The purported suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria by President Muhammadu Buhari, is an anti democratic act which I reject in its entirely and call on Justice Onnoghen and the judiciary to resist with every legal and constitutional means that they can muster.

This brazen dictatorial act is the latest action in the ongoing rape of our nation’s hard earned democracy by those who dined with anti democratic forces, and is symptomatic of the increasing desperation that President Buhari and the cabal pulling the strings have as February 16, 2019 draws near.

The fact that the unlawful suspension of Chief Justice Walter Onnoghen was announced just as it became public knowledge that the CJN was constituting the election petition tribunals is not lost on discerning Nigerians and the international community. This act of desperation is geared towards affecting the outcome of the 2019 Presidential elections. Indeed, it is not just the CJN that has been "suspended", it is the Nigerian Constitution that has been infracted and, in effect, suspended, under the guise of the suspension of the CJN.

The case involving the legality or otherwise of the charges against Chief Justice Walter Onnoghen is in court, as it should be. So far, the judiciary has ruled in Justice Onnoghen’s favour. So, why not allow the court to adjudicate on the matter? What is the pressing urgency?

I want to seize this opportunity to call for unity amongst the judiciary. Do not let the Muhammadu Buhari administration divide you. Do not let this government turn you against yourselves. The judiciary is the last hope of the common man and the defender of our democracy.

I also urge the international community to follow the commendable example of the United States and the United Kingdom by intervening to make those involved in this undemocratic act know that their actions will have consequences. Strong consequences.

And to the Nigerian electorate, I call on you to save your beloved country from dictatorship by voting against President Muhammadu Buhari’s desperate war against the judiciary. Our country is falling apart under the leadership of President Buhari and it is time to stand up for democracy."

Are Igbo Officers Not Good Enough For Appointment?
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion
Posted by: Edoman - 01-25-2019, 07:27 PM - No Replies

Quote:President Muhammadu Buhari was in the South East States of Enugu and Anambra to commission the burial ground of Chief Nnamdi Azikiwe, and as well solicit for votes. After a welcome from the APC members in Enugu, the president sped off for his engagement in Anambra, where he spoke to people present.

People wanted to know why he did not appoint any Igbo man into any office across the security apparatus of the country. The president stated that it was because he made his appointments based on merit. This has left most Igbos questioning the appointments, since for the sake of Federalism and inclusion, cut off marks are reduced in South Eastern States, to accommodate Northern friends and brothers.

An Igbo person who was interviewed but chose to remain anonymous, stated that “it is not okay is to label more than 30 million people as ‘not good enough’.” The campaign ended, but the trails are yet to heal, so says many onlookers.

From Gistvic.com

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Kaduna Zonal Office on January 24, 2019 arraigned three suspected fraudsters and their company before Justice Z.B. Abubakar of the Federal High Court sitting in Kaduna on a two-count charge bordering of conspiracy and obtaining by false pretence to the tune of £100,000 (One Hundred Thousand Pounds). Gistvic Reports.

The suspects – Benjamin Soile, Okoro Junior, Abubakar Mustapha and Abueleven Limited, are alleged to have defrauded Sa’adatu Dasuki of the said sum.

They were arrested by operatives of the EFCC, upon receipt of the petition by Dasuki, who alleged that in September 2018, Okoro and Soile, officials of Access Bank Plc, Kwato Road Branch, Ungwan Rimi, Kaduna conspired with Mustapha to defraud her of £100,000.

They pleaded “not guilty” to the charges.

In his ruling, Justice Abubakar granted bail to the defendants in the sum of N500, 000 each and two sureties in like sum, who must own a landed property within the jurisdiction of the Court. One of the sureties must be a civil servant not below grade level 9.

The case was thereafter adjourned to February 14, 2019 for hearing, and the defendants ordered to be remanded in prison pending the perfection of the bail conditions. Gistvic Reports.

Family kicked off flight after other passengers complained about their terrible body odour

A family were kicked off a flight after their terrible body odour made other passengers uncomfortable and they complained to the crew.

Yossi Adler, his wife, Jennie, and their one-year-old daughter were trying to return home to Detroit from a vacation in Miami when they were escorted off their American Airlines flight, leaving them confused.

After being removed from the plane, airline employees told them that their luggage would be taken off the aircraft and returned. But this wasn't done and it left them with only the clothes on their backs.
Lamenting the treatment they received, Yossi Adler told Local 10 News on Thursday:

Quote:There’s no body odor that we have. There’s nothing wrong with us.
All of a sudden, as soon as they took us off, they closed the gate and then they said, “Sorry, sir, some people complained you had body odor and we’re not letting you back on.”

American Airlines released a statement following the incident acknowledging the reason that they were barred from flying.
The statement reads:

Quote:Mr. Adler and his wife were removed from the flight when several passengers complained about their body odor.
They have been booked into a hotel for the night and given meal vouchers. They have been rebooked on a flight Thursday.

The family returned on Thursday morning and, in order to ensure that what happened previously doesn't repeat itself, they stopped people at the airport and asked them if they thought they were smelling.

Jennie Adler said:

Quote:We stopped several people in the airport and, it’s embarrassing, but we asked them, “Do you think we smell? Because we just got kicked off a plane for smelling.

Yossi said he doesn't believe body odour was the reason they were kicked off the plane and he's asking questions to know what really happened.
He said:

Quote:I want them to own up to what really happened and tell me the truth. What was it?

The Adlers eventually made it back to Detroit the second time they were booked and there luggage was there when they arrived.

Buhari Empowers 15,000 Youths, Fed 300,000 Pupils In Anambra- Ngige

Quote:By Francis Ekpone

The minister of labour and employment, Dr. Chris Ngige said President Muhammadu Buhari's administration empowered 15,000 youths from Anambra state and fed over 300,000 pupils under his administration's school feeding programme.

Ngige, who made this revelation at Holy Trinity field, Onitsha during All Progressive Congress, APC campaign flag off urged the people of the state to ignore some people he described as attention seekers and vote President Buhari and other APC candidates come February 16 poll.

On his part, the National chairman of APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomole noted with regret that lots of Nigeria leaders bear Igbo names but were unable to complete any tangible project in the entire south east.

"Some of them answer names like Ebele Azikiwe without trace of any achievement in the zone throughout their tenure. But President Muhammadu Buhari within his three and half years as Nigeria president, completed and commissioned Zik's mausoleum, paid for contract of second Niger bridge and also intensified effort to complete the Enugu-Onitsha expressway.

Oshiomole however urged the Igbo not to be received but vote APC and President Buhari as he has lots of goodies for the Igbo people.

Speaking, President Muhammadu Buhari said his administration has made achievement in three key areas of security, economic growth and corruption. "Before we came on board, Boko Haram captured about seven local government Areas in Borno state but today, through the effort of my administration, Boko Haram is no longer holding any local government hostage.

"Our economy has improved greatly under my watch and we are not relenting in fighting corruption. This administration has succeeded in fighting corruption to a standstill in Nigeria. All the loopholes by which politicians steal our common wealth have been blocked" he said.

Osun Tribunal: INEC Closes Case Without Calling Witness
User Avatar Forum: News
Posted by: Edoman - 01-25-2019, 05:15 PM - No Replies

The Independent National Electoral Commission on Thursday closed its defence before the Osun State Governorship Election Tribunal without calling any witness.

During the hearing, the commission through its counsel, Adesina Agbede, applied to close its case.
The tribunal also adjourned till January 30 to enable the Governor of the state, Adegboyega Oyetola, to open his defence.

The tribunal is hearing the petition filed by the Peoples Democratic Party and its candidate in the governorship election in Osun State, Senator Ademola Adeleke, in which he challenged the declaration by INEC that Oyetaola, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, won the election.

Both the PDP and Adeleke are alledging among other things, that the election results were manipulated to favour the APC and its candidate.

The chairman of the tribunal, Justice Ibrahim Sirajo, announced on Thursday after INEC closed its case that the tribunal would adjourn and return on January 30 when the second respondent would open his case.

Oyetola is listed as the second respondent in the petition.

INEC, which opened its case last Friday and closed on Thursday without calling any witness, relied only on documents.

The documentary evidence included result sheets as announced by its officials.

Speaking on the implication of INEC decision, the lead counsel for the petitioner, Dr Paul Ananaba (SAN), said INEC had literally endorsed and conceded to the PDP petition seeking declaration of Adeleke as the winner of the election.

He said, “By closing its case without any defence, INEC is saying it cannot challenge the petitoner’s case. INEC has accepted that we are right in our prayers that the rightful winner of the election is PDP’S Ademola Adeleke.”

'Tradermoni Is Vote Buying' - Transparency International
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion
Posted by: Edoman - 01-25-2019, 05:09 PM - No Replies

Transparency International Nigeria has said the TraderMoni scheme, a collateral-free loan initiative targeted at petty traders and artisans as part of the National Social Investment Programme of the Federal Government, is a form of voter inducement.

The chairman of the anti-corruption organisation, Awwal Rafsanjani, who spoke on Lunchtime Politics, a programme of Channels Television, noted that the initiative was an “official use of public funds in the name of TraderMoni to actually induce voters.”
Rafsanjani noted that the TraderMoni scheme was not a programme that was “part and parcel of the manifesto of the ruling party and it is not in Nigerian constitution.”

He added, “It was not done three years ago. It was only started close to election time. So, the allegation by many Nigerians that this is clearly a case of vote buying using public funds goes contrary to our constitution and to having a free and fair election.
“That is why the Independent National Electoral Commission itself has seen this danger. The vote buying we are seeing has transformed to have more official recognition through the acts that unfortunately we are seeing performed by some of the agencies using public funds.

“This is despite the statement by the President that public funds will not be used for his re-election campaign. But this, unfortunately, is contrary to what Nigerians are seeing.”

The Federal Government had, however, argued that the TraderMoni was an empowerment initiative designed to meet the financing need of at least two million petty traders across the country.

But Rafsanjani said if the government had TraderMoni as a policy plan, it should have begun its implementation earlier than a few weeks to the elections.

He stated that, no matter how well-intentioned, implementing the scheme close the elections would give different signals to Nigerians across the federation, adding that if the government was sincere about the scheme, it would have started before the elections drew this close.

According to the TNI chairman, mixing election campaigns with “distribution of money” is ill-advised.

New photos reveal how a British sailor murdered his wife while on their honeymoon in the Caribbean by intentionally sinking the small ship they were on.

British-Australian man Lewis Bennett has pleaded guilty to killing his new wife Isabella Hellman, 41, at sea and prosecutors are now seeking a maximum sentence.

Prosecutors have released photos of the damage Bennett allegedly inflicted on the ship in an effort to sink it and make Hellman's death look like a tragic accident.

The FBI have accused him of intentionally sinking the ship in a bid to inherit his wife's estate.

The horrific plot unfolded on May 15, 2017 when Bennett allegedly opened escape hatches and damaged the twin hulls of a catamaran he and Hellman were travelling on during their honeymoon.

The Coast Guard pictured above finding the vessel (underwater on the right) Bennett allegedly deliberately sunk in a bid to kill his new wife to inherit her estate.

A giant hole is pictured on the side of the boat the couple were traveling in when Isabella Hellman drowned in May 2017.

Escape hatches located at the bottom of the couple's catamaran were found wide open in pictures taken by the U.S. Coast Guard after the vessel sunk

According to FBI, the ship's portholes below the waterline of the vessel had been opened and the damage on the ship was inflicted from the inside.

After the two went out sailing, the vessel then sank and Bennett made an SOS call saying the boat called Surf into Summer was sinking and his wife was missing.

He claimed the ship struck an unknown object while he in a cabin inside the vessel. When he came up he did not see Hellman and the ship was taking on water.

He was rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard between Cuba and the Bahamas and was found on a life raft stuffed with his luggage, stolen silver coins, and provisions.

Hellman's body was never found and Bennett claimed he had no idea what happened to her and suspected she was swept off the ship and into the sea when it submerged.

“There’s absolutely no truth in the rumours making the round that the Hon. Chief Justice of Nigeria, His Lordship Hon. Mr. Justice Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen, GCON, has resigned his office. It is fake news!

“The Hon CJN was in the office all through yesterday (Thursday) and sat in court. As part of his duties, the Hon CJN will be swearing in members of the 2019 National Assembly, Governorship & State Assembly Election Petition Tribunals tomorrow (Saturday 26th January 2019),” the statement said.

The Attorney General, Abubakar Malami has also requested that Mr Onnoghen resigns from office, following the various allegations.

The case, currently ongoing at the CCT was adjourned till January 28.

But the Court of Appeal on Thursday ordered the tribunal to suspend sitting, pending the discharge of current applications before it.

Jimi Agbaje Laments, Over 3,000 Of My Billboards, Others Destroyed In Lagos
User Avatar Forum: News

Lagos State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) gubernatorial candidate, Mr. Jimi Agbaje, has raised the alarm over the persistent methods of removal of his campaign posters and political party signs, which he blamed on the agents of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

He claimed that the practice, which has been on since campaign for the 2019 gubernatorial election started, obviously confirmed APC’s ill-motive and desperation to ensure that there is no level playing field.

In an interaction with The Guardian, Agbaje said PDP has on several occasions been the victim at the barbaric hands of miscreants, who have vandalized no fewer than 3,000 billboards and campaign materials in prime areas such as the Third Mainland Bridge; and have also enjoyed continued support from members of the ruling APC.

According to him: “The support received in the execution of these unlawful acts from the APC is evidenced by the surreptitious release of culprits, without sanction, including officials within the Lagos State Signage and Advertisement Agency (LASAA), apprehended recently in relation to the crimes.

“This has led to an increase in the unlawful activities, which have now been reported to be prevalent in over 35 constituencies across the state. “Is this how the APC intends to conduct elections – by stifling the opposition?”

The PDP candidate expressed displeasure that despite the best efforts of the Lagos State police commissioner towards thwarting these illegal activities “members of APC have devised other surreptitious strategies all in an attempt to silence and emasculate any opposition to their ‘anointed’ candidate for the position of governor.

The continued use of state apparatus and resources to fund the political campaign and that of their candidate, Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the excessive use of federal might in a local election are few out of the many instances of the ruling party’s arbitrary exercise of state power.”

Agbaje affirmed that neither his party nor the electorate could be cowed by the antics of the ruling party, which campaign materials are currently everywhere as if there are no other contestants. He said, “In a true democracy, one of the core tenets is the existence of a level playing field for every party without fear or favour.

Every citizen should be afforded the opportunity to consider the alternatives and not to be forced into making a decision. The acts by the ruling party are akin to a dictatorship aimed at oppressing the law-abiding members of the PDP who do not possess the political might and or the financial exuberance of APC.”

He, therefore, urged the electorate to stand against any form of tyranny as the election approaches, saying this is the best time to deliver the state from the shackles of bondage and ensure freedom to its people who have been held down under the whims and caprices of select individuals who have monopolized its resources and accumulated public funds for their private benefit.

Quote:President Buhari has told Igbo leaders complaining about marginalisation not to do so as he has been fair in the appointments he has made so far in his administration. The president said this yesterday January 24th in Anambra state where he went for his presidential campaign.

Igbo leaders have over the years complained about the South East getting the least number of appointments since the Buhari-led government started.

Responding to this allegation when he paid a courtesy visit to the Obi of Onitsha, the president said about five members of the federal executive cabinet are from the region.

A family quarrel has escalated into serious panic in Ozubulu area of Anambra state. It was gathered that some security men of OVS (Ozubulu vigilante service) allegedly killed a man following a family problem.

According to the reports, two brothers were having a misunderstanding on Wednesday, January 23rd, but were later reconciled by their kinsmen.

Then by 2 am the next day, the vigilante operatives landed at the compound of the deceased who was a student of the Nigerian army school in Kaduna but just returned home for a visit.

It was gathered that the OVS was called into the family dispute and one of them allegedly shot the victim three times as he reportedly died on his way to the hospital.

The angry youths set the security vehicles on fire at the office of the OVS. The houses of some of the members of the OVS were also set on fire which could be seen from the neighboring village.

The Fact That Oby’s Party Endorsed Buhari Hours After She Dropped Out Speaks Volumes

[Image: 327B3863-68A6-42B1-92EF-992E0C40D3A2.jpeg]

Oby Ezekwesile has finally opted out of a presidential race in which she had little chance of winning even one per cent of the votes.

It would have been easier for a pregnant Somalian chimpanzee or a four-eyed Zambian frog to be invited to Buckingham Palace for lunch with the Queen than for this so-called “presidential aspirant” to win one polling booth, let alone one ward or one Local Govermment Area, in the race.

The fact that Oby’s running mate, one Galadima, and her political party endorsed Buhari three hours after she opted out of the race speaks volumes.

She, Fela Durotoye and Omoyele Sowore were clearly spoiler candidates who were on a malevolent errand of mischief, who were never to be taken seriously and whose hearts secretly lay with the tyrant all along.

I have no doubt that those who claim that Oby and the other “not too young to run” presidential aspirants, with the possible exception of Kingsly Moghalu, were just a front for Buhari and a futile attempt to take votes away from Atiku Abubakar and the PDP were right.

The wisdom of Atiku refusing to participate in a debate with these unconciable jokers and desperate pretenders cannot be faulted or questioned.

They did not deserve the attention that they so desperately sought and their motives for participating in the presidential race are, to say the least, questionable.

The only one amongst them that had anything meaningful to say or to offer and that spoke from the heart and with full sincerity of purpose was George Moghalu. This is a deeply courageous man that I have come to respect.

Nevertheless I urge him to opt out of the race and throw his weight behind Atiku. This is not Kingsly’s time but something tells me that sometime in the distant future he has a date with destiny.

Man asks for advice after his pastor refused to dedicate his restaurant because he sells alcohol

A new restaurant owner, who says he's desperate to make heaven, has taken to Facebook to ask for advice after his pastor refused to dedicate his restaurant because he sells alcohol and it's a sin according to his pastor.

Ikenna said he opened a new restaurant and invited his pastor to pray over his new business, but when his pastor walked in and saw a customer drinking Smirnoff, he refused to pray for the business.
Now, Ikenna Elendu wants to know if engaging in alcohol sales is a sin and can prevent someone from going to heaven.
He wrote:

Quote:Umunnem,I need your advice,
I opened a big restaurant and in our church,if a member establish something new,he/she is free to invite our pastor to pray and hand the business over to God.
So I decided to invite my pastor and he honoured my invitation.
He entered the restaurant and spotted one of my customer drinking ordinary Smirnoff ice and he asked me if I sell alcoholic drinks too,"" I responded yes"
My pastor told me he cannot pray for me that am encouraging sin, I was speechless, who am i to correct my pastor?
I thought he was joking that he won't pray for me but he mearnt it and walked away.
Umunnem, since he came to my restaurant, my conscious has never been at peace.
How can I own a big restaurant with no beer and drinks inside?even ordinary Smirnoff.
Does it mean big restaurant owners won't make heaven?
So a devoted Christian should not manage a big restaurant  where alcoholic drinks are being served?  Umunnem achorom igakwa eluigwe ooo.
Am I really encouraging sin?

8 rapists jailed after their 13-year-old victim tracked them down on Facebook

Eight rapists have been arrested and thrown in jail after their 13-year-old victim tracked them down on Facebook.
The schoolgirl was raped while walking home after spending a day with friends at a swimming pool in Velbert, a town in the Western German state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
As she walked along a forest path on her way home, she was ambushed by eight migrant boys from Bulgaria. The boys dragged her into the bush and took turns raping her.

A family friend, who went searching for the girl as she had not returned home, stumbled on the horrific scene and the boys fled.
Sadly, it looked as though they were going to go free as their identities were not known. But the brave girl tracked them down after vaguely recognising one of them. She gave police the boy’s picture and the suspect was arrested in town later that day.
Police found footage of the rape on the teenager’s phone and could easily identify the other seven perpetrators. Six of the schoolboys, aged between 14 and 17, were found guilty in October last year despite claiming that the 13-year-old victim consented.
The main suspect, aged 15, was sentenced to four years and nine months in prison after the court proved he raped the girl twice. Another schoolboy got four years in a juvenile detention centre for also raping the girl twice. Two other migrants were sentenced to two years and 20 months in a youth prison, while two walked free after receiving suspended sentences.
One 15-year-old boy was sentenced to two years and nine months in a youth prison, while another 15-year-old only got a 15-month suspended sentence for aiding the others.
This week, the seventh and eighth schoolboys were found guilty by a court in Wuppertal after they fled to Bulgaria to escape punishment but were picked up and extradited back to Germany.

Abacha loot: Swiss govt has returned over $1.04b to Nigeria since 1999, says EFCC
Friday, January 25, 2019  NEW

Since 1999, Swiss Government has returned about $1.040 billion looted by the late Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha and his family members to Nigeria, it was learnt yesterday.

Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Acting Chairman Ibrahim Magu gave the information in a presentation at the International Association of Anti-Corruption Authorities, (IAACA), in Vienna, Austria where he spoke about the need for an effective international collaboration by law enforcement agencies to combat corruption.

He said the cost of corruption was enormous and needed a broader approach to be tackled.

The excerpts of Magu’s submission were made available to reporters by the EFCC’s Acting Head of Media and Publicity Mr. Tony Orilade.

Magu said: “Successes recorded in recovery of stolen assets have been achieved through Memoranda of Understanding, (MoU) signed between Nigeria and several countries, including Switzerland, the United Kingdom (UK), the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and the United States (U.S.) in line with Article 57 paragraph 5 of the United Nations Convention Against Corruption, UNCAC.

“The UK government returned stolen funds to Nigeria in the cases of Dariye and Alamieyeseigha, with over five million pounds recovered from the former Bayelsa State governor in 2012.

“In the case of Joshua Dariye, a former Governor of Plateau State in Nigeria, the British government also returned £48,000 to Nigeria in fulfillment of the UK’s commitments under Chapter V of the United Nations Convention Against Corruption.

“In 1999, the Swiss authorities, pursuant to a request for mutual legal assistance, returned about $723m to Nigeria.

“A tripartite MoU between the Swiss government, the World Bank and Nigerian government also led to the return of additional $320 million Abacha loot.

“Other classes of recoveries made by the EFCC included whistle blowers cash recoveries, subsidy payment cash recoveries, third party cash recovery for NNPC, FIRS, NPA, AMCON and banks.

“In 2017, EFCC made a total recovery of N473, 065,195,977.50, $142,504,121.12, and most of the recoveries, were non-conviction based asset recovery.”

Magu listed some of them to include, real estates belonging to Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, a former Petroleum Minister and her associates; $43,449,947, £27,800 and N23,218,000 recovered in an apartment at Osborne Road, Ikoyi, Lagos in 2017; $9,772,800 and £74,000 cash in Kaduna, belonging to Andrew Yakubu, a former Group General Manager of NNPC in 2017.”

Magu called for more international collaboration and synergy on repatriation of stolen wealth.

“Corruption is acknowledged to have been an impediment to sustainable development in Africa, and the cost is so enormous that there is an urgent need for international collaboration for success to be achieved,” he said.

According to him, “though the international community has created legal and institutional frameworks for the prevention and recovery of proceeds of corruption, recovery of stolen assets stashed away in foreign lands still remains a major issue to be tackled.”

Morning Devotional For Friday 25th January

RHAPSODY OF REALITIES

FRIDAY, 25TH JANUARY.

YOU HAVE ALL THINGS IN HIM.

Therefore let no man glory in men. For all things are yours; Whether Paul, or Apollos, or Cephas, or the world, or life, or death, or things present, or things to come; all are yours; And ye are Christ’s; and Christ is God’s (1 Corinthians 3:21-23).

The Bible says we’re joint-heirs with Christ, which means everything He owns also belongs to you. He shares everything with you, including His Name. No wonder He said in Colossians 3:17, “And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus….” He gave you His Name to live in. What could be more than that?

As a joint-heir with Him, you’re a co-sharer in His ownership of the world. Now you can further understand why there’s really nothing for you to be praying and asking God for, except to intercede for others, and fellowship with Him. Prayer has a whole different meaning with the knowledge that you already have all that you require for life and godliness.

Some Christians are always professing their needs, rather than affirming the Word of God concerning their wealth and prosperity. “Oh God, I need a house; I need a car; I need this and I need that”; that’s not the way. All you needed was Christ who now lives in you; and Christ is everything! He has everything, and has given you everything.

Therefore, let His Word mould your thinking and give you a new mentality. You own the world. Come to this level of thinking! The Bible tells us to trust “…in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy” (1 Timothy 6:17). Ephesians 1:3 declares, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ.”

God already blessed you with every blessing that exists in Christ. Health, prosperity, victory, success, joy, peace and every blessing of God is already yours. Live with that consciousness.

CONFESSION

The Lord is my shepherd, and I have everything good: health, promotions, increase, abundance and wealth. I’ve been blessed to be a blessing, and I walk in the light and reality of my heritage in Christ. Amen

KINDLY SAY THIS WORDS OUT LOUD.

Dear Father, I thank you for your glory that’s revealed in my life. I thank you also for beautifying me with your grace and giving me a life of endless peace and prosperity. I am functioning excellently through the power of the Holy Spirit, who live and

pilots me from glory to glory. The anointing I’ve received of the Lord abides in me forever, and that anointing teaches me all things and makes me fruitful and productive in every endeavour. I go forth today by the anointing to influence and impact my world for the Gospel, in Jesus’Name. Amen!

Fulani Herdsmen Kill Pastor & 2 Church Members In Plateau State(photos)
User Avatar Forum: News
Posted by: Edoman - 01-24-2019, 09:40 PM - No Replies

Report reaching us says on Monday, 21st January, 2019, people suspected to be Fulani herdsmen  killed two persons in Karara village of Ropp District in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, Plateau State.

The victims, 48 year-old Reverend Samuel Mafulul, a father of 7 and  the pastor of Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN), Karara Marit Local Church Council, alongside his neighbor, a 45 year-old father of 5, Mr. Samuel Kasuwa, who also is a member of the church, were killed on the same day.

When contacted, the Secretary of the church, Mr. Markus Majid narrated the incident to Stefanos Foundation’s correspondent:

“Mr. Samuel Kasuwa met his untimely death when he visited Reverend Samuel at his residence. As the duo were in the house, they heard knock on the door, Kasuwa, who came out to attend to the visitors asked them who they were, unfortunately, the people shot and killed him instantly and proceeded into the house and killed the reverend as well.”

Wife of the deceased reverend, Mrs. Jummai Samuel, a 45 year-old, who has been battling with her health for some times now told Stefanos Foundation that the death of her husband came to her as a shock.

“I have been battling with my health for almost a year now and I have been on sick bed since then. I heard of my husband’s death while I was in Bauchi, receiving medical attention under the supervision of a family friend. As soon as they informed me, I suspended my treatment and I was transported back home.

“I have seven children, the first is 33years and the last is 28years old. My husband has been the strength of our family. Right now, I don’t know how my life is going to be without him.”

Mr. Markus Majid, the LCC secretary also told Stefanos Foundation that another elder of the same LCC, 47-year-old Luka Mawash, a father of 6 children and a neighbor to the reverend had been killed in a similar situation last year, September 14th, 2018.

This incident has now left these families without fathers to fend for their needs. It is our prayer that the families will be comforted as SDF plan to embark on a trauma healing session with them.

Nigerian Man Arrested In India For Duping A Man With Fake Job Offer In America
User Avatar Forum: Other Stories
Posted by: Edoman - 01-24-2019, 04:45 PM - No Replies

Quote:The centre for cyber crime investigation (CCCI), Noida, India has arrested a Nigerian, Daniel Emeka for allegedly duping a Greater Noida resident of Rs 22 lakh on the pretext of offering a job in the United States.

According to Times of India, the accused, who stays in Bengaluru had impersonated as an official of a US-based firm claiming to offer a job in the reputed company trapping his target in a web of money trail that took officers of the CCCI to at least eight bank accounts opened in Bengaluru and Mizoram.

The accused was arrested after the cyber cell took the help of Google to trace his mobile number which he had been using at the time of orchestrating the fraud.

The accused Emeka (35), who had been putting up in Bengaluru till now - was arrested from Bengaluru on Monday and brought to Noida on transit remand on Wednesday, January 23.

Emeka claims to work as a garment exporter who ships the clothes to Nigeria via cargo.

SP (crime) Ashok Singh told TOI that Raj Kumar, a resident of Greater Noida, had lodged a complaint in the Kasna police station about the fraud orchestrated between February and May 2018 for which an FIR was lodged on July 9, 2018.

An FIR has been lodged in the matter under IPC sections 406, 420, 467, 468, 471 and sections 66, 66 c and 66d of the IT Act.

However, the investigation was then transferred to the cyber cell after about four months and the latter started an investigation in November.

According to Raj Kumar’s complaint, Aujo had come in touch with Raj Kumar after accessing his email ID.

He then made internet calls and voice calls to Raj Kumar offering him a job at a reputed US-based brewing company.

“Emeka impersonated as an official of the company and offered him a job as a technical expert in the company. Through repeated calls, he gained the trust of the victim and then sought money in exchange of visa fee and for other documentation to complete the recruitment process,” CCCI inspector Satish Chand told TOI.

Raj Kumar apparently had to borrow money from his friends and also mortgage his property, he added, stating that he paid Rs 22 lakh to Aujo in four months.

However, after taking all the money from Raj Kumar, Emeka then started avoiding Raj and stopped all the contact. Raj lodged a complaint in July after he realised that he was duped.

According to CCCI officers, the money was transferred in at least 16 different accounts - eight in Bengaluru and eight in Mizoram.

“These accounts were opened in the names of different individuals - mostly Indians. Their names are being verified and they have apparently taken some percentage of money from Emeka. We are trying to verify the accounts,” Chand said.

CCCI officers said that when the investigation was shifted to the cell, they tried to track the gmail account from which transaction was made.

A formal request was sent to Google in November seeking the registered phone number with the gmail account being used by Emeka which the software giant provided in January.

“We then traced the mobile number and found that he was based in Bengaluru,” Chand said.

Emeka was arrested on Monday after which Noida police officers got a transit remand from a local court and brought him to Noida on Wednesday.

His passport has expired and it has been recovered by the Noida police from his possession including Rs 1000, two laptops and two mobile phones.

Icpc Should Investigate Lai Mohammed Over N2.5 Billion Nbc Fraud - Pdp
User Avatar Forum: News
Posted by: Edoman - 01-24-2019, 04:33 PM - No Replies

@POLITICSNGR

Below is a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Kola Ologbodiyan, made available to PoliticsNGR calling on the ICPC to investigate Information Minister, Lai Mohammed for an alleged N2.5 Billion Fraud;

"The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) charges the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to go beyond the Director General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Is’haq Kawu Modibbo and institute a system-wide investigation into the N2.5 billion NBC scandal.

The PDP particularly demands an open investigation into the alleged roles possibly played by certain top officials of the Buhari Presidency, including the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, around the matter.

The party says ICPC’s uncovering of fraud in the N2.5billion NBC Digital Switch Over (DSO) contract has further exposed the inherent corruption in the Buhari Presidency and how Presidency officials and leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have been siphoning billions of naira from government agencies.

This further exposes how corruption has become endemic at the NBC under the direct supervision of the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, who has not yet cleared his name on the N13.1 million NBC loan scandal since May 2016.
The party therefore urges the ICPC to go beyond the N2.5 billon NBC fraud and investigate the allegations that Alhaji Lai Mohammed abused the privilege of his office by approving a letter from his office requesting the NBC, an agency under his supervision, to advance a loan of N13.1 million to his ministry for a purported official assignment in China.

The demand, which was against budgetary approvals, principle of TSA and the anti-corruption claims of the government he represents, has not been investigated and culprits prosecuted, even when it was clear that it corrupted the agency in converting it into a lending institution, against our financial regulations and the laws that established the NBC.

The PDP insists that the failure by the Buhari Presidency to investigate and if found answerable prosecute Alhaji Lai Mohammed for this alleged act of manifest corruption shows how the Buhari Presidency has been concealing humongous corruption and sharp practices being perpetrated by APC leaders and cronies of Mr. President in the ministries, departments and agencies.
Alhaji Lai Mohammed is a spokesperson of the Buhari administration, which claims to be committed to the fight against corruption. He cannot, in all honesty, hold such a position with this allegation still hanging around his neck.

This is more so as allegations are rife in the public space that agencies in the Ministry of Information and Culture now reek of corrupt and sharp practices in the last three years."

CBN To Fine Banks For Paying Counterfeit Banknotes
User Avatar Forum: Market Place
Posted by: Edoman - 01-24-2019, 09:26 AM - No Replies

The Central Bank of Nigeria has imposed a penal fee of N1m on each branch of Deposit Money Banks for non-compliance with its ‘Banknote fitness guidelines and clean note policy documents for the industry.’

The regulator disclosed this in a circular to all DMBs on ‘Penalty for payment of counterfeit monies from ATMs, Teller Points’ on Wednesday.

It said, “The management of the CBN has observed with concern the incidences of counterfeits paid through some DMBs’ ATMs/Teller points. This situation has continued unabated despite moral suasion to the affected DMBs.

“To address this, among others, the CBN in collaboration with key currency management stakeholders developed ‘Banknote fitness guidelines and clean note policy documents for the industry.”

“In order to sustain public confidence in the national currency and ensure compliance with the provisions of the policy documents, the CBN said it approved the, “Spot checks on DMBs’ ATMs and Teller points to ensure compliance; and imposition of penal fee of N1m per branch of DMBs for non-compliance.”

The apex bank said that the enforcement of the sanction would take effect after the launch of the two policy documents at a date which would be communicated to all stakeholders.

According to the CBN, it has the statutory obligation to provide adequate supply of clean banknotes to facilitate seamless payment and settlement of transactions by the public, government and banks.

Over the years, it observed that the growth in economic activities and the upsurge in population had necessitated the rise in the volume of banknotes in circulation.

In view of technological advances, the CBN, like other central banks, had introduced various forms of electronic payment systems for an effective and efficient settlement of transactions and to reduce the volume of cash usage with its attendant cost implications.

The regulator noted that demand for cash continued to grow despite technological advances.

“The volume of currency in circulation as at the end of 2012 rose significantly by 10.34 per cent to N7.91tn pieces, as at half year of 2018,” it stated.

A large proportion of the notes in circulation, according to the CBN, are dirty and mutilated and not fit for ATMs and over the counter payment.

Sowore dares NASS members’, vows to cut jumbo pay
Thursday, January 24, 2019  NEW

                           [Image: Omoyele-Sowore-a-presidential-aspirant.jpg]
Presidential Candidate, African Action Congress (AAC), Mr Omoyele Sowore, on Wednesday, said if elected into office, he would cut the jumbo pay of the National Assembly members.

Sowore made the pledge at a town hall meeting tagged: ‘’The Candidates” organised by the MacArthur Foundation in collaboration with NTA and DARIA media in Abuja.

“The issue of some people earning minimum wage and others earning maximum wage, where a senator earns N14 million monthly is unacceptable.

‘’Do you know that it will take a Nigerian worker earning N30, 000 monthly about 38 years to earn what a senator is earning per month?” he queried.

Sowore, who described the trend as disheartening, said ‘’our problem in Nigeria is not wealth generation but wealth distribution.’’

‘’We will not allow illegality in National Assembly,” he stressed.

He said his government would not only invest in the education of the young people but provide 5 million jobs for the youth.

The AAC presidential candidate said the party would employ between 300, 000 and 400, 000 personnel in the security sector so that the country’s security could be strengthened.

‘’By this, the police and the army will be able to keep us secured. Also, we will give study allowances to students.

‘I believe with our resources, we can support our young people, the elderly, etc,” he said.

He assured that productivity in the country would be ensured ‘’when we invest in our people.”

‘’I am after the knowledge of Nigerians that we can sell to the world, not after cocoa or so. We will build innovative leaders when a university can produce a student that is technologically-inclined.”

On the insecurity in the country, his running mate, Mr Rabiu Rufai, said the AAC would tackle the problem when people are held accountable for their actions.

‘’Nigeria will do better if we don’t condone anybody irrespective of his tribe, religion or region.” he said.

Relevant committees of the House of Representatives were wednesday mandated to liaise with Ministry of Budget and National Planning, and the Ministry of Finance to urgently correct some irreconcilable differences in figures presented in the 2019 Appropriation Bill if the second reading must continue today.

The Speaker, Hon.Yakubu Dogara, who gave the directive wednesday after the duo of Hon. Adamu Chika representing Shiroro/ Rafi/Munya of Niger State and Hon. Ahman-Pategi representing Edu/Moro/Pategi Federal Constituency of Kwara State picked holes in the 2019 budget, said the ministries must present an error-free document today to enable lawmakers continue work on the document.

Chika and Ahman-Pategi had noted that the appropriation bill was fraught with many errors in figures.

Dogara, who has continuously implored his colleagues to expedite action on the budget, however said the second reading of the budget could proceed in spite of the apparent flaws, adding that yesterday’s debate should merely look at the general principles of the budget.

“Even though it is apparent on the surface of the budget that there are so many irreconcilable differences in the figures allotted, basically we are discussing the general principles of the budget by virtues of the provisions of our rules at this time. So, we would talk about general principles at this time.

“I am sure we are not concluding the debate today. I will direct relevant committee chairmen to liaise with the Ministry of Finance, Budget and Planning, to ensure that by tomorrow, before we conclude the debate on the budget, to make sure that we have the reconciled figures.

“So, for today, I want to admonish and plead with us to make sure that we confine ourselves to the general principles of the budget. I am by this announcement drawing the attention of the Ministry of Budget and Planning and Finance to the irreconcilable differences in the figures allotted in the budget and unfailingly, by tomorrow, if we must continue the debate on the budget, they must give us reconciled figures.”

When he pointed out some of the discrepancies in some of the figures, Hon. Chika stated that: “I want to raise some issues, particularly some errors I noticed in the national budget. As everyone knew, the schedule in the budget consists of part A, which is the statutory transfers and part B, which is the debt servicing, part C, which is the recurrent expenditure and part D, which is the capital expenditure.

“I will raise some issues, which have to do, one, with the Ministry of Education, two, Ministry of Finance and three, Ministry of Budget and National Planning and then, one observation with the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).

“When you go to the education ministry, in part C, which is the recurrent expenditure, which consist both the personnel and overhead, you will realize that the budget is N462.2 billion, but when you go to the summary of the budget by the MDAs, number 41: 0.5.1.8 personnel now have changed to about N539.6 billion and overhead, there is N33.5 billion now making it that the total recurrent expenditure when you go by the summary by the MDAs has changed to N539 billion. I don’t know why that figure was added at that level.

“When you go to Ministry of Finance, the budget of the ministry in the recurrent expenditure in part C is N10.8 billion, however, there is also an error when you go to the summary, which is number 21: 2.2.0, personnel is N7.4 billion, which is okay, but when you go to the overhead, it now becomes N2.26 trillion and therefore that has also changed. Now the total which is now personnel and the overhead is now N2.27 trillion. That has also changed.

“In the Ministry of Budget and Planning, in the part C is N9.3bn, but however, when you go to the summary by MDAs, which is number 28: 0.2.3.8 personnel in the Ministry of Budget and Planning has now become N66.21 billion. Then overhead also changed there; it has now N832.2 billion. Then the total, which is personnel and overheard in that aspect has now become N1.49 trillion.

“The capital also has changed to about N655.9trillion, now giving us a total allocation of the Ministry of Budget and Planning, instead of N9.3bn has now become N2.15 trillion.

“Also, at the capital, which is D aspect, page 118 appeared only as ‘Federation.’ We don’t have any MDA called federation, but however, when I continued with the research, I realised that in that federation there is a capital component of N31.8 billion, but when I continued to search, I realised that federation, I found it in the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), so why did they write federation?”

Corroborating the Chika’s findings, Ahman-Pategi said, “If you look at the budget; in the budget of the Ministry of Finance, the detail of overhead, salary and all that is correct. But in the summary detail on the right side column, that is where the mistake was made.”

According to him, “Anytime we discover it (error), they can attend to it. We know that what we are discussing the general principles. It will still get to the committee level and all those can be done. As for the ministry, we can get the Minister of Finance and the Chairman of Finance and Chairman of Appropriations to liaise with these three bodies; the Budget Office, the Ministry of Budget and National Planning and the Ministry of Finance.”

But reacting to the issues of the errors noted in the budget, the Leader of the House, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, in whose name the budget stands, said human mistake are inevitable is such circumstance but that they will be corrected.

“Mathematical errors in figures are things that are normal. At worst, it may reflect some kind of tardiness but it doesn’t take away the substance and the merit of what we are debating. And if you know the rules of the House very well, we are not here to debate the intricate details of the figures and numbers of the budget, we debate the general principles. That is what the debate is about,” Gbajabiamila said.

He however acknowledged that “It is a good observation and I believe it has been noted. Like the Speaker said, it will be sent back; the communication will be done. They will correct the figures just here and there that may have the potential of distorting the numbers. That will be cleaned up.”

The Deputy Speaker, Hon. Lasun Yusuf was however unhappy that the budget is paltry to cater for the needs of every Nigerian, urging that now is time for all hands to be on the deck towards expanding the country’s economy.

“We are not what we think we are as a nation. We can deduct it from the figure the executive arm of government has always sent to us. We think we are a rich country but from the figures, we are very poor.

“The 2019 budget says the proposal is N8.7trn of which if we do a direct conversion that is just merely $28.52bn. What does that mean? It means the totality of the Nigerian budget for 2019 is just about $29bn. Apple alone declared a profit of almost $100bn after tax. So, if for 160m, it shows that for 2019, the total money that is due for one head is just $178.52 in a year and so we all have the duty as Nigerians to begin to think outside the box of how we can develop our country.”
