The FCT Police Command has paraded 17 suspects including a dismissed soldier for various crimes including armed robbery, rape and fraud in the capital city.

While parading the suspects, the FCT Commissioner of Police, Bala Ciroma, said the success recorded by the command was as a result of aggressive intelligence gathering, raid of identified black spots and criminal hideouts, diligent investigation of cases, foot and motorised patrols, conduct of stop and search operations and community engagement.


He said the command arrested one Goodluck Onyewenyi, 40, for fraudulently opening a bank account with the name of a patient suffering from kidney failure and in dire need of financial assistance to undergo kidney transplant.


Quote:“The suspect, who happens to be a family friend to the patient took advantage of the relationship to write to wealthy individuals, corporate organisations and highly placed government officials for financial assistance.

“The suspect used a bank account he opened in the name of the patient to defraud unsuspecting members of the public.

“Preliminary investigation has revealed that the suspect uses names of patients identified to be suffering from kidney failure to solicit for financial assistance which he converts to his personal use,” he said.

The CP added that the dismissed soldier on his part was arrested for allegedly supplying firearms to three other robbery suspects who were nabbed on December 27 by police operatives on stop and search duty at Nyanya area.

The suspects are Tochukwu Nwodo, 32; Gabriel Ileso, 32 and Michael Damelak, 20, who, according to the CP, confessed during interrogation that the firearm was supplied to them by one Friday Audu, 32. They said they were going for a robbery operation when vigilant policemen arrested them.

Also, the CP said, three suspects – Ibrahim Iliya, Rilwanu Abdullahi and Victor Besini – were arrested on January 8 by operatives attached to the command’s Safer Highway Patrol Team on duty at Yangoji, Kwali in possession of an unregistered Boxer motorcycle that was later discovered to have been stolen from its owner at Kpada village two days earlier.

The owner of the recovered motorcycle, he said, is currently on admission in hospital as a result of injuries inflicted on him by the suspects, adding that the suspects are notorious for attacking their victims with dangerous weapons and inflicting injuries on them.

Three other suspects, Sunday Abraham, Sunday Obi and Tochukwu Chibuike, were also arrested for allegedly robbing a woman in Lugbe area of the FCT and raping her. Responding to questions from journalists, the suspects all admitted to robbing the woman, with Abraham and Obi also admitting to have raped their victim.

The dismissed soldier, while responding to questions, however denied supplying the firearms to the robbery suspects but admitted ownership of one of the firearms and the military kits found in their possession. He said one of the suspects, Nwodo, took the gun from his bag.

A 10-year-old girl was strangled to death as she resisted a rape attempt by her tutor at Kaptai upazila in Rangamati, Bangladesh on Saturday.
 
Police found the accused Aung Baching Mong Marma, 40, when he was trying to dump the body in a nearby jungle, said Muhammad Ashraf Uddin, officer-in-charge of Chandraghona Police Station.
 
Police sent the body to Rangamati General Hospital morgue for autopsy and filed a case against Aung, he added.
 
Aung attempted to rape the girl around 10:00am at his home when she went there for tuition. As she resisted and started screaming, he strangled the girl, said the OC, quoting the victim's family members.
 
The accused admitted his crime during primary questioning in custody, said police.
 
The victim's father informed the law enforcers after her daughter did not return home Saturday night.

Gunmen suspected to be armed robbers  on Monday, shot dead a retired Deputy Controller General of Nigeria Prisons Service, Dr. Adewale Oloyede, in Kogi state.
The Public Relations Officer of the NPS, Francis Enobore, who disclosed this in a statement on Monday evening, said Dr. Oloyede was killed alongside his orderly, Dauda Michael by yet to be identified gunmen, near Osara town in Kogi state.
Narrating the incident, Mr Enobore said the medical doctor was travelling to Lagos in his private car when they were attacked at about 3 pm last Friday (1st February, 2019).
Late Oloyede headed the Directorate of Health and Social Welfare for several years before retiring in 2007.
Until his tragic death, he was a member of the National Stakeholders Committee on Prisons Reform and Decongestion under the chairmanship of the Federal Capital Territory Chief Judge, Hon. Justice Ishaq Bello.
A colleague, Oladokun took to Facebook to mourn the deceased. He wrote: 
"The song in my dream, like a funeral dirge, was terminated by an early morning phone call with the horrible news that the eagle in person of our Dr. Adewale Oloyede (DCG/Retd) is no more; no thanks to the bullets of the highway robbers.The tear that flows down the faces of parting lovers is like a compact that no joy shall dwell there until they meet again. Those who extinguished your life failed to realize they cannot kill the soul as your spirit matches on still. Adieu sir!!!

Activisit, Deji Adeyanju, has spent 53 days in prison. According to a post sent in by the #Free DejiAdeyanjuNOW movement, Deji is being detained at Kano Central prison for an offense he was acquitted and discharged on 10yrs ago.
 
According to the statement from the movement, his arrest all started when he led a protest to the Force headquarter in Abuja calling on the Nigerian Police Force not to get involved in politics.  He was picked up during the rally and detained for weeks, he was later released and detained again on a case against him that was thrown out a decade ago.

The Gender Section of the Lagos State Police Command is investigating a case of rape reported  against one Razaq Oluwaseun Oke, 28, in Blue and Don-Chima George, 25,in Black of Dallankester Hotels, Lekki, Phase one Lagos. 
 
A statement from the Lagos state police command, CSP Chike Oti, states that the duo allegedly took a girl, 23, to a club on Saturday, February 2, 2019, unknown to her that they had ulterior motive. While at the club, they mixed the young woman's drink with a substance that made her weak and almost unconscious.
 
Satisfied that the drug was beginning to affect the victim, they quietly left the club with her to Dallankester Hotels in Lekki Phase one, owned by the father of one of the suspects named Don-Chima George.
 
At the hotel, they took turns to rape her. As if that wasn't enough, they filmed the abuse.
 
When the victim woke up from the induced sleep, she confronted the suspects who denied having carnal knowledge of her. Not satisfied, she placed a call to her elder brother complaining that she had been violated.  The brother immediately invited policemen from Maroko Division led by the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Isah Abdulmajid to the scene. 
 
On searching the suspects, the DPO recovered their phones and went through their video recordings where he saw a video of the suspects sexually abusing the apparently unconscious  victim.
 
The state  Commissioner of Police, CP Edgal Imohimi has directed the Gender Section of the Command to investigate and diligently prosecute the suspects to serve as deterrent to others.

Ade Marafa, elder sister to Kabir Marafa, the senator representing Zamfara Central at the National Assembly, has been killed bu bandits.

Her husband was also abducted.

Abubakar Tsafe, an aide to the senator, confirmed the incident to TheCable, stating that the bandits attacked the residence of the senator’s sister, at Ruwan Bore area of Gusau Local Government Area on Tuesday.

The suspected bandits, numbering about 100, were also said to have set the village ablaze after raiding it.

"More than half of Ruwan Bore village has been burnt by the bandits. The villagers are now seeking refuge at Mada, a neighbouring community," Tsafe, an aide to the senator, confirmed.

At the time of issuing the statement, the senator’s brother-in-law had not been found.

Court jails human trafficker for four years in Osun State

Today, a Federal High Court in Osun State sentenced a 29-year-old woman, Sekinat Owolabi, to four years imprisonment for human trafficking.  
 
Owolabi was arraigned, tried and convicted on four counts bothering on human trafficking and organised foreign trips and promotion of prostitution. Justice Maureen Onyetenu, in her judgment, held that the convict did not deserve any mercy, hence should serve her jail term at Federal Prison, Ilesa, without an option of fine.
 
Onyetenu also held that the convict’s conviction and the sentence would serve as a deterrent to other would-be offenders in the society. The Defense counsel, Ademola Adeyemo, had prayed the court to temper justice with mercy in sentencing his client.
 
The National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in PersonsProsecution counsel, Mrs Zarowa Caroline, had told the court that the convict committed the offence sometime in December of 2012.
 
Caroline also told the court that Owolabi lured a 19-year-old girl on a trip to Mali with intent to secure for her a job abroad. She, however, said the victim was rescued by the Nigeria Immigration Service and handed over to NAPTIP office, Osogbo in January of 2013.
 
She said the offence Owolabi committed contravened Sections 15 (a), 16 and 19 (b) of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Law Enforcement and Administration Act, 2003 (as amended in 2005).

The Lagos Zonal office of EFCC on Monday, February 4, 2019, arraigned Kasumu Ademola, Salau Mikailu and Ganiyu Isola before Justice C.J. Aneke of the Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos on an eight-count charge bordering on money laundering, conversion and retaining of proceeds to the tune of N34, 000, 000 (Thirty Four Million naira) only.
 
They were arraigned alongside a stock brokerage firm, CSL Stock Brokers, following a complaint received by the Commission from the Nigerian Stock Exchange, NSE. Investigation revealed that the defendants fraudulently carried out transaction on the shares of people who had died, and also cleared their dividend warrants.
 
Items found on the suspects at the point of arrest included dividend warrants and share certificates.

Quote:One of the counts reads: “That you, Kasumu Shakiru Ademola, Salau Omoniyi Mikailu, Ganiyu Oluyede Ishola and CSL Stock Brokers, on or about the 2nd day of June 2015 in Nigeria, within the jurisdiction of this honorable court, conspired amongst yourselves to commit an offence to wit conversion of 298,550 (Two Hundred and Ninety- Eight Thousand, Five Hundred and Fifty) units shares of Guinness Nigeria Plc, Nestle Food Plc, Julius Berger Plc, Unilever Nigeria Plc and Union Bank of Nigerian Plc belonging to the late Mr. Joseph Adeniji Adeyemi Joseph, which shares is valued at N34,000,000 (Thirty-four Million Naira) and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 18 (a) of the Money Laundering ( Prohibition ) Act, 2011 as amended and punishable under section 15(3) of the same Act.”
Another count reads: “That you, Kasumu Shakiru Ademola, Salau Omoniyi Mikailu, Ganiyu Oluyede Idika and CSL Stock Brokers, between the 2nd day of March and 4th day of November, 2016 in Nigeria, within the jurisdiction of this honorable court, converted the aggregate sum of N28,365,133.72 (Twenty Eight Million, Three Hundred and Sixty- Five Thousand, One Hundred and Thirty Naira, Seventy Kobo), which sum you reasonably ought to have known was derived from fraud and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 15(2)(b) of the Money Laundering ( Prohibition ) Act, 2011 as amended and punishable under Section 15(3) of the same Act.”
They pleaded “not guilty” to the charges. In view of their pleas, the prosecuting counsel, Nnemeka Omewa, prayed the court for a trial date and also urged the court to remand the defendants in prison.
 
However, counsels to the defendants told the court about pending applications for bail on behalf of their clients and pleaded with the court to grant them bail in the most liberal terms.
 
Consequently, Justice Aneke adjourned the case to February 8, 2019 for hearing of the bail applications and commencement of trial. Justice Aneke ordered that the defendants be remanded in prison pending the determination of their bail applications.

The Western Marine Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) currently warehouse about 5,646 expired bags of 50kg foreign parboiled rice worth N124, 776, 600 in its warehouse .

The command also nabbed 806 loaves of cannabis with Duty Paid Value (DPV) of N21,157,500 in August, 2018.

The amphibian arm of the service said due to massive seizure in the command, the warehouse had been filled up leaving no space for new seizures

The expired bags of rice are said to have been allocated to undisclosed Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) but are yet to be evacuated due to logistics problems.

The Area Controller of the command, Comptroller Boyiliya Binga told journalists that some of the seized bags of smuggled rice which have been in the customs warehouse for close to two years are no longer edible.

The items seized by Comptroller Binga currently occupied the newly built apartment which are either for conference or office accommodation of men of the service.

“”The CAC wishes to appeal to states which were allocated items to IDPs from the HQ to comeand evqcuate them. This will help create space in the Government Warehouse for more seizures.”

According to the WMC boss, the items which include vegetable oil, bags of shoes, used tyres, among other items at the warehouse have been abandoned at the facility for close to three years and the command is willing and eager to make more seizures this years without any storage provision.

In one of the recent seizures, the Comptroller declared that the command nabbed 806 loaves of cannabis with Duty Paid Value (DPV) of N21,157,500 in August, 2018.

Other items include; 219 kegs of vegetable oil worth N2,628,000; 500 bales of cloth with DPV of N42,000,000; 42 sacks of shoes with DPV of N6,413,400 among others.

He however stated that the total DPV of the items seized is N297.887,446.00.

Speaking further on challenges of the command, Comptroller Binga said dearth of operational equipments such as boats and vehicles had impacted negatively on the efficiency of the command’s anti smuggling activities.

On assumption of office at the command, the CAC has been able to furnished three structures to make up for shortage of offices in the command as well as repair of three sea going boats with the assistance of the Comptroller General of Customs and his management team.

The Comptroller however promised to improve on its present achievements especially as the officers and men of the Service are being motivated through promotions, welfare packages and supply of vehicles and tyres to the command

An Indian lady, Andrea Orizu pictured left, has taken to Instagram to call out her husband's bank account manager for allegedly snatching her husband and marrying him after pretending to be a family friend.

Andrea, a mother of three who lives in Malaysia, shared photos on Instagram from her husband, Frank Orizu's wedding to Chinelo Lilian Obiora, the banker, which held last month.
 
Andrea said her husband had told her he had an urgent business meeting in Nigeria and needed to fly down on December 27th last year. Unknown to her, he came to Nigeria to prepare for his wedding to Chinelo.

An Osun state High Court has sentenced three persons to death for Killing one Timileyin Sonibare, for money rituals.

Timileyin Sonibare, who was a 400 Level students the Osun State University, was killed on the 26th of June 2017, at Oke Baale area in Osogbo, while his head and arm were also cut off and roasted by the convicts.

In the two hours judgement delivered by Justice Kudirat Akano, the court said the prosecution has proved his case beyond reasonable duobt.

A missing lady found in the mortuary had her underwear partly lowered and two wounds on face, according to preliminary investigations into the mysterious disappearance and death of the Kenyan lady.

According to information from City Mortuary where the body of Mildred Akinyi Odira was discovered on the morning of Monday, February 4, the deceased had two visible wounds on her face.

The lower section of her face was crashed and her trouser torn from the top. Her inner wear was partly lowered.

Akinyi went out of radar on the morning of Tuesday, January 29. She was en route to Ruaraka Uhai Neema Hospital from her place of residence in Kariobangi, Kenya, Tuko.co.ke reports.

Before heading to the health facility, Akinyi informed security guards manning the premise where she lived that she was sick.

She had been diagnosed with hypertension, ulcers and diabetes. The guards contacted a taxi driver to come and rush her to hospital for examination.

She, however, remained unreached and attempts to trace her at the hospital were futile. According to her sister, Maureen Anyango, she discovered all was not well when Akinyi’s son failed to report to school.

It emerged the woman’s body was brought at the morgue by police officers at 6:31am on the same day she went missing.

The family called on investigators to expedite the probe. An autopsy is yet to be conducted to establish cause of injuries observed on Akinyi’s body and what might have led to her death.

A father and his daughter were arrested for incest after two sisters competed to have sex with their father and one won.
Travis Fieldgrove, 39, and his 21-year-old-daughter, Samantha Kershner, were arrested in Nebraska on Wednesday when it was discovered that they allegedly had an intimate relationship.
 
Kershner reportedly told authorities that ‘her motivation to have sex with her father stemmed from a jealous competition with her half sister regarding who could have sex with their father,’ according to the Omaha World-Herald.

Kershner grew up without her dad. She met him in 2015 after she told her mother that she wanted to find out who her father was and her mother arranged a meeting.

On October 1, 2018 the father and daughter got married at the Adams County Courthouse in Hastings, Nebraska. 
While being questioned, Fieldgrove told police that he did not believe he was Kersher’s father because his name was not listed on her birth certificate.
But a DNA test was carried out by authorities and the paternity test results came back on January 14. The result determined that the probability that Fieldgrove is Kernsher’s father is 99.999 percent, according to court documents.
Fieldgrove later went on Facebook to claim that the test revealed Kersher was not his daughter.
Both were arrested on Wednesday and each were charged on one count of incest, according to the Grand Island, Nebraska police department. They are being held in Hall County Jail with Fieldgrove on $100,000 bail and Kershner on $20,000 bail.

40-year-old man, Goodluck Onyewenyi, pictured above, has been arrested by the Abuja police command for allegedly using the pictures and medical reports of renal failure patients to raise N4.7 million from members of the public which he then diverted for himself.
Parading the suspect before newsmen, the FCT police commissioner, Bala Ciroma, said the suspect had written letters to rich Nigerians asking for their financial support for patients needing kidney transplant. Ciroma said the suspect also used the pictures of a family friend who died from the disease in 2014.

Quote:“Preliminary investigation has revealed that the suspect used the names of patients identified to be suffering from kidney failure to solicit for financial assistance, which he converted to his personal use. The following have been recovered from the suspect as exhibits: pictures of patients undergoing dialysis, copies of letters for financial assistance and bank documents. Investigation is ongoing.” the police boss said
An elder brother of one of the suspect's victims, Abraham Onyeke, said his brother Joshua suffered from renal failure for many years and that when he met with Onnyewenyi, he advised  him to publicly solicit for funds to get Joshua a transplant. Onyeke said he gave the suspect N2,000 to post the letters of assistance but he turned around to convert the account to his personal account with the money generated.
Quote:“Because of the nature of my job as a banker, I asked him to assist me to post the letters; so, he got the medical report, Joshua’s pictures and other details, took the envelopes home and went behind to change the name through a newspaper publication. He went to the bank, swore to an affidavit, changed his name, got a national identity card and opened an account. He sent the letters soliciting for money to over 200 persons and money started coming into the Zenith Bank account he opened. He got about N4.7m.
“When we got the report through some philanthropists who came to Wuse to contribute to the cause, we investigated and got him, but he said he was working in Lagos. We then asked him to transfer the money to us but he refused.
“So, we blocked the account through a court order, but he quickly went to Suleija, Niger State, and opened an account with UBA there. The police got an order to freeze the account and they nabbed him in Dutse, Makaranta, Kubwa. As it is now, Joshua is still suffering from renal failure and we need Nigerians to come to his aid.” Onyeke said
Speaking to newsmen, Onyewenyi said he collected donations from wellmeaning Nigerians for the patients but he did that in collaboration with an NGO that has since gone underground. He added that he was in the process of selling his car so he can return the money.
Quote:“It is very unfortunate; it is not intentional but the NGO is not available now; that is why I’m taking the blame for everything. I and the family have reached an agreement to sell my car, but I am surprised to find myself here at the police command. We are trying to settle the matter,” he claimed.

Williams and Associates, the United States-based polling firm hired by Goodluck Jonathan administration ahead of the 2015 presidential election but predicted victory for Muhammadu Buhari has predicted victory for Atiku Abubakar in the forthcoming presidential polls.

The company in its analysis of Nigerian presidential election said Atiku will win with less than a majority of the votes cast with 45 per cent. Buhari, according to the polls, will take 33 per cent of the votes.

The polling sample produced Kingsley Moghalu, the candidate of Young Peoples Party, YPP, with 9 per cent of the votes, Omoyele Sowore of African Action Congress, AAC, with 8 per cent of the votes.

The same company, which when it was hired by the Jonathan administration, had predicted victory for Buhari with 54 per cent to 46 per cent for Jonathan. Buhari eventually beat Jonathan by 54 to 45 per cent of the total votes cast.

In its analysis working with data collected across Nigeria by operatives of Williams and Associates through interviews, face to face interviews and using mult-stage stratification proportionate to the population sample responders were interviewed on their preferences in English and local dialects as appropriate.

The poll also reported that South-East with 76 per cent had the greatest proportion of Nigerians who believe that things are going in the wrong direction. Only 12 per cent of those in the region believed that things were going in the right direction.

The South-East was followed by the South-South with 70 per cent, the North-East with 65 per cent, North-West with 57 per cent, South-West 48 per cent.

Remarkably, the troubled North-Central with 46 per cent had the least proportion of those who believe that things were wrong.

Two weeks to the election, 64 per cent of the sample responded that President Buhari had not done enough to deserve re-election that was compared to 52 per cent, which in the same time in 2015 that believed that Dr. Jonathan had not done enough to deserve re-election.

Responding, Mr. Festus Keyamo, spokesman of the Buhari campaign said: “This is one of several predictions that various polls have projected. I am sure also that you have said President Buhari will win with a wide margin. We know that even before the primaries.

“It is an insult to give President Buhari 33 per cent of the votes, it does not reflect the reality on the ground.”

A church was set ablaze by aggrieved youths after a 26-year-old man was stabbed to death while trying to settle a fight in Agbongbo Olunloyo, Ibadan, the Oyo State capital on Friday, 1st of February, 2019.

It was gathered that the incident occurred following a fight that ensued between some boys in front a shop belonging to the deceased’s elder brother.

The deceased identified as Raji Adisa, a Disc Jockey (DJ) by profession, attempted to settle the dispute in order to prevent the occurrence of further chaos in the area.

The police said it was a Guardian and Counselling teacher at the Egan Community School in Lagos who uncovered the cultists’ initiation ceremony plan. The school comprises both primary and secondary levels.

The teacher was said to have noticed a particular incision on the lower jaw of some of the students and decided to ask questions about it, to which one of the children confessed that any school pupil or student seen with the mark was a member of the Awawa cult group.

Consequent upon the discovery, the teacher raised an alarm and the school authorities reported the matter to the police.

The state Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, said that acting on the report, he directed the Gender Section of the Command to investigate the allegation of initiation into an unlawful society affecting 12 children whose ages ranged from 8 to 16 years, the 16-year-old girl being the oldest and only female among them.

Edgal said that during interrogation, the girl confessed that she did take the rest of the children for initiation, and that the symbol on their jaws was that of the Awawa Boys.

“Two adult suspects behind the initiation are already in police custody and are helping police investigation. Investigation is ongoing with a view to arresting other members of the Awawa group for prosecution,” the police boss added.

Three All Progressives Congress, APC, supporters lost their lives in an auto crash during the campaign tour of Senator Solomon Adeola, (APC Lagos West) Amuwo Odofin council and Oriade Local Council Development Area, in Lagos. 
 
The incident which occurred at about 12.20p.m. between Apple Junction and Festac Link Bridge, involved a Toyota Thundra pick-up with number plates FST 01LG. Shetima Bulus, Irikefe Evwibovwe and Alex died on the spot, while Chinelo Ofegbu, Wasiu Sadiq and Adebayo Adeleke, Fatope Saheed, Adio Kazeem and Jamiu Ogundairo sustained injuries.
 
Policemen from Festac Division, according to the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Chike Oti, arrived the scene and deposited the corpses at the Isolo General Hospital. It was gathered the vehicle was on high speed and attempted to join Adeola’s convoy, when it somersaulted.
 
The incident disrupted the programme of the day, as Senator Adeola quickly rounded up the day’s campaign after observing a minute silence in honour of the departed at the venue of a stakeholder meeting in the area.
 
Adeola, in a statement by his Media Adviser, Chief Kayode Odunaro, said: “It is quite an unfortunate accident. I sympathise with those injured and in hospital. I pray for the peaceful repose of the soul of these supporters of APC.”

Mrs Abubakar who decried the level of insecurity, hunger and unemployment in the country urged Nigerians to be wise and make a better choice by electing her husband, Atiku on the 16th of this month.

"I am so Atikulated and Ortomatically Obidient. I bring you message of hope that Nigeria will get working again when you vote in Atiku Abubakar. The present government is very deceitful. All they have is failed and unmet promises.

"Recently, most of us have become refugees and widows in our land following high level of insecurity. What manner of fight against corruption when you send soldiers out without training and arms," she queried.

Like the Apostle Paul, it makes no difference the adversities we face; we stand strong and tough in the Holy Ghost! We affirm, “None of these things move me.” Hallelujah!

Occasionally, your commitment to Christ and convictions about the Gospel will be tested; as someone who lives by God’s Word, you’ll surely be persecuted. But be of good cheer, because greater is He that’s in you than all your adversaries and persecutors put together. They may come out against you one way, but they’ll flee before you seven ways.

Never be bothered about the tests and trials that come your way; the Lord allows them because He knows the stuff you’re made of. You’re more than a conqueror (Romans 8:37); you always win. You reign and rule in union with Christ; nothing can put you down. The fiercer the challenges you face, the greater your victories and testimonies. That’s why James, in his epistle, admonished, “My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations” (James 1:2).

The reason the Lord would ask you to rejoice when all hell seems to be breaking loose is that He knows you’re a victor. No situation that you face has the power to overwhelm you. 2 Corinthians 4:8-9 says, “We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed”; why? The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has debunked a newspaper report on sleaze in the foreign exchange (forex) dealings.

In a rebuttal made available to Daily Sun yesterday, the apex bank challenged the media organisation to provide the names and evidence of collusion between the agents and officials of CBN working in cahoot to carry out the racket.

The CBN statement read: “The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has been alerted on the front page headline story in the BusinessDay newspaper on Monday, February 4, 2019 titled: “Exposed: The sleazy face of N306/$, inside Nigeria’s racket where faceless agents pocket over N32bn annually”. 

“The management of CBN wishes to react to the report wherein BusinessDay newspaper alleges that faceless agents in Nigeria are exploiting the country’s multiple exchange rates to devastating effects and allegedly with the backing of regulators. CBN wishes to state unequivocally that this report is unfounded and untrue and challenges BusinessDay to provide the names and also verifiable evidence of collusion between these faceless agents and officials of CBN, who are working to perpetuate these so-called FX racket schemes. We would also urge the management of BusinessDay to contact the CBN prior to making such spurious allegations, as we were denied the benefit of responding to this article.

“The CBN wishes to remind BusinessDay, as most financial observers have noted, that the FX rates across various markets governed and regulated by CBN, have been converging, leaving no room for arbitrage opportunities in Nigeria’s FX market. For avoidance of doubt, the CBN will continue to act in the best interest of Nigeria and shall ensure it remains focused on its core mandate of sustaining the stability in the FX market.”

The Federal Government on at the weekend said it was losing $9 billion (N3.2 trillion), annually due to its poor investment in agriculture prior to the coming of the Buhari administration.

The Minister of state for Agriculture, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, who made the claim at the Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti, (ABUAD) during a reception and lunch in his honour by founder of the university, Chief Afe Babalola, noted that before President Buhari came on board, Nigeria was losing $9 billion revenue earnings annually in agricultural sector.”

The minister said Nigeria was also losing over 240 metric tonnes of fish production in the world market that could have increased foreign exchange earnings and boosted the economy.

“In Nigeria, we are not producing enough fish to feed our population, that is why we are relying heavily on importation. The deficit between demand and supply was 2.5 million metric tonnes annually which is about 320 containers. You can imagine the quantum of revenue we lost to low production in this sector alone,” he said.

According to him, “Knowing that most of our products were being taken to other West African nations to be processed and rebranded, we introduced certification policy for all the products in order to have right and proper certificates for our products and in order not to affect the Gross Domestic Products (GDP) negatively.

When I visited Belgium, the Minister of Agriculture there told me the country’s annual revenue earning in agriculture sector was 35 billion Euros. This is a country with less than five million population.

“He further told me that the difference between agriculture in Africa and the West is technology and innovation.

That was why the Federal Government in partnership with the World Bank, earmarked $250 million to train young graduates in agribusiness.

Meanwhile, a reseach by the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology says, agriculture is the highest contributor to global warming in Nigeria.

This research debunks the long-time general assumption that energy is the highest contributor to global warming.

Prof. Peter Ekweozoh, Director, Environmental Sciences and Technology, Federal Ministry of Science and Technology, made this known in an interview in Lagos on Monday.

He spoke at a workshop with theme: “Green Economy Capacity Assessment Workshop” at the Federal Institute of Industrial Research Oshodi (FIIRO), Lagos. The workshop was a partnership between the University of Reading, U.K, and FIIRO to brainstorm on how to improve the Green Economy and mitigate environmental degradation. “A recent research by our ministry shows that the agriculture sector is the highest contributor to global warming in Nigeria and also the use of land, contrary to what we believed.

“Research has proven that it is not energy, and so, if we are able to stop the use of chemical fertilisers, burning of agricultural waste and turn them into usable products, our society will be better.

“The Federal Government is already making efforts at having low carbon development programmes. The President has signed the Paris Agreement that took place in 2015.

Imo State governor, Rochas Okorocha, is ruing his support for Adams Oshiomhole to emerge the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Imo West APC senatorial candidate bared his mind yesterday at the Orlu Township Stadium, while flagging off his campaign.

Okorocha said the national chairman, whom he christened “Oshi and Ole”, has shown unreliable character.

“My finishing governor as is not a full-stop. It is a comma because after every comma, a sentence will follow. Those who are afraid of me politically have ganged up to fight me, including the person I supported to become the national chairman. That is why they brought Hope Uzodinma. He is not running for any election, but was only recruited to fight me in my Orlu zone.


“I am also running for the Senate election to attract a lot of things for Orlu people. You have seen what I have done as a governor. When I go to the Senate, there will be a massive difference. Nzeribe, Izunaso and Uzodinma had wasted the position for years, as there is no project they can boast of in Orlu zone. They were only interested in their pockets,” the governor said.
He challenged his rival in the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Senator Osita Izunaso, to present what he did when he served the zone for four years.
“Please, ask Osita Izunaso what he has been able to attract to Orlu zone for the four years he spent in the House of Representatives and four years he spent as a senator, not even a bungalow was attracted to Orlu zone. So, he should go and sit down.
“I am very grateful to you all. I have never seen in my life a senatorial rally taking the shape of a national rally. The crowd here is intimidating and has humbled me. What I understand is that you are saying to me Rochas carry go; you are saying to me, go to Abuja.”

Officials of the Khanna police in India on Saturday arrested two Nigerian nationals and recovered fake currency from their possession.
 
Acting on a tip-off, Crime Branch officials intercepted the accused identified as 'Colvin Norman' and 'Gamtoi Cauva' near Doraha bus stand on Saturday afternoon.
 
On frisking them, the police recovered fake currency of Rs 3.52 lakh of the denomination of Rs 100. They were detained after they failed to give satisfactory answers.

Pope Francis landed in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, on Sunday evening to begin a historic three-day visit.
This visit is the first one by a leader of the Roman Catholic Church to the Arabian Peninsula.

He was received at the airport by His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, and His Eminence Dr Ahmad Al Tayyeb, Grand Imam of Al Azhar Al Sharif University and Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders.
Children with bouquets of roses also lined up to welcome the Pope.

In preparation of Pope Francis' Papal Mass, road closures have been announced in Abu Dhabi from 6pm on February 4 until 6pm on February 5.
Around 135,000 people are expected to gather at the Zayed Sports City for the Papal Mass on February 5.

In a statement, Sheikh Mohamed welcomed the visit of Pope Francis and Dr Ahmad Al Tayyeb to the UAE. Expressing his great happiness, he said that the visit is especially important in promoting the values of fraternity, peace and peaceful coexistence. The visit is also significant because it reinforces ties of friendship and cooperation between the UAE and the Vatican, he said.

Sheikh Mohamed added that this historic visit to the UAE sends a message to the whole world that the Arab region, the centre of the three monotheistic faiths, whose people have lived in harmony and peace for centuries, is unlike the often invoked image of extremism and terrorism. Rather, he concluded, the Arab region comprises millions of people who believe in coexistence and dialogue and renounce violence and extremism and who are open up to the world and willing to engage with it, Khaleej Times reports.

A seven-year-old boy has died after allegedly being buried alive by his guardians because he didn't know the Bible.
 
Ethan Hauschultz was reportedly buried in a 'little coffin of snow' while in the care of his court-appointed guardians Timothy Hauschultz and Tina Hauschultz. It is not known exactly how the Hauschultzs are related to Ethan, but they are listed as his legal guardians.
 
The couple are accused of always making the boy and his twin brother serve sickening punishments whenever they failed to memorise verses from the Bible. The punishment included being made to hold a 44-pound log for two hours every day for a week.
 
Timothy and Tina Hauschultz's 15-year-old son is also alleged to have tortured the 7-year-old boy. The teenager once kicked and punched Ethan at least 100 times, rolled a heavy log over his body and stood on his head while he was face-down in a puddle.

Medical reports show Ethan died in April last year from hypothermia and blunt force trauma to the head, abdomen and chest, and a fractured rib.
 
The 15-year-old boy told police that he was in charge of supervising Ethan and his twin, who were both being made to carrying logs after failing to recite 13 Bible verses of the bible passage chosen by Timothy.
 
Timothy, 48, has been charged with felony murder and felony contributing to the delinquency of a child. Tina, 35, is charged with failing to prevent bodily harm and intentionally contributing to the delinquency of a child. The couple's teenage son has been charged with first-degree reckless homicide.

Ethan's birth mother Andrea Everett spoke about the moment she arrived at her son's side during his hospital treatment.
She said:

They worked on him for five hours, giving him CPR the entire time, and still couldn't get a heartbeat. There was no brain activity.
I want justice for my son, and the person responsible should go to jail for a very long time.

During the ceremony, the president said, 'today’s occasion is the continuation of this Administration’s fight against corruption. It is a cardinal programme in the three point agenda that I promised to pursue and will continue to pursue as I seek the mandate of Nigerians for a second term'.
 
He added that, 'corruption has negatively affected our political, economic and social life. Those opposed to our fight against corruption berate us for our focus, determination and single mindedness. They pretend that they do not know what corruption is. But Nigerians know what corruption is. Ordinary people know what corruption is and they support our effort and determination to fight it'.

Jamiu Olasheu, a 35-year-old Islamic cleric has been arrested alongside three others for being in possession of a human skull.
 
Two of the suspects: Teslim Ayeniromo, 45, and Sunday Kolade , 35, were accosted on a motorcycle, at Kofedoti area of the state, by a team of policemen attached to Agbara division. During a search, the human skull was discovered in a bag one of them held, consequent upon which they were whisked to the Police station.
 
During interrogation by the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Adegbite Omotayo, the suspects , claimed that the skull was given to them by one Micheal Osanyinbi, adding that they were on their way to deliver it to the Islamic cleric when they were intercepted.
 
Spokesman for the Ogun State Police Command, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, who confirmed the arrest, said, “They led the DPO to the house of the man who gave them the skull. The man in turn, led the police to the self acclaimed cleric’s house. The Islamic cleric has made confessional statement that he actually requested for the skull which Micheal Osanyinbi promised to get for him at N25,000 and an additional N1,000 for the motorbike man who will deliver it to him.
 
He stated further that the skull is needed for a yet to disclosed ritual. Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Iliaysu, has ordered the immediate transfer of the suspect to the Special Anti Robbery Squad for further investigation and prosecution”.

A middle-aged woman identified as Mrs Rebecca Oladosu, has died after her daughter in-law, Taye Lamidi, connived with one other, Basirat Lamidi, to pour hot water mixed with pepper on her.

According to the police, Basirat and Taye attacked the deceased on October 30th 2018, at her home in Okeyelu village, Ilie, in the Olorunda local government area of Osun State. The duo were arrested immediately the incident happened and have since been in and out of a magistrate court in Osun state.

At the resumed hearing of the case on Friday February 1st 2019, the police prosecutor, Inspector Muslim Jafani, told the court that Mrs Odusanya who had been in the hospital since the incident, had died. Jafani then asked the court to strike out the previous charges levelled against the accused persons and substitute it with two new counts of felony and murder.

The new charges read in part

“That you Basirat Lamidi and Taye Lamidi, and one other now at large, on October 30, 2018, around 1.30pm at Okeyelu village, Ilie, in the Osogbo Magisterial District, did conspire among yourselves to commit felony to wit; murder, thereby committing an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 516 of the Criminal Code, Vol. 34, Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2003.

“That you Basirat Lamidi and Taye Lamidi and one other now at large, on the same date, time and place in the aforementioned magisterial district, did cause the death of one Mrs Rebecca Oladosu by pouring hot water mixed with pepper on her body, thereby committing an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 316 of the Criminal Code Vol. 34, Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2003.”

The Magistrate, R. A. Olayemi, adjourned the case to March 21st 2019 and ordered that the accused be remanded in the custody of the Ilesa Prison pending an advice from the state’s Director of Public Prosecutions.

  Indian Man To Die By Hanging For Destroying 4-yr-old Girl's Intestine Via Rape

A teacher has been sentenced to death by hanging for raping a four-year-old student so badly that she had to have her intestines realigned.

Mahendra Singh Gond is due to be hanged next month after he raped the child on June 30 last year in India's Madhya Pradesh district.

He raped the girl so badly that he rearranged her insides, then he dumped her body in a jungle area, assuming she was dead.

A desperate search was launched, before the girl's family found her with agonising injuries and rushed her to hospital. Her injuries were so severe that she had to be airlifted to a Delhi hospital where she had an operation to realign her intestines, reports Times Now News.

Gond was arrested within hours of the horrific attack and he was convicted after the girl made a statement during her recovery.

Gond was sentenced to capital punishment on September 19 last year. He is due to be executed at 5am on March 2.

However, the hanging can still be stopped by the Supreme Court or the President.

  Young Man Caught Wearing His Sister's Pant After Stealing It In Lagos. Photos

A young man was apprehended earlier today after reportedly stealing a female underwear in Lagos. 

It was gathered that the yet-to-be identified boy was nabbed after stealing a pant which is allegedly belongs to his sister - for suspicious reason best known to him. 

The young man who was suspected of stealing the pant - was forced to strip off his trouser after being caught by residents in Oshodi area of the state. 

The boy was later handed over to the police. 

This is happening after the Nigeria Police Force said it cannot investigate the stealing of pants for spiritual purposes because there is no evidence.

Three persons were allegedly feared dead while about 20 others sustained varying degrees of injuries as rival political thugs engaged each others in Effurun area of Warri in Delta state.

Witnesses said the bloody violence erupted between political thugs loyal to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and those loyal to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

It was gathered that trouble started around Dumure area of Effurun on Wednesday when shots were heard fired in the area.

Situation became more tensive on Friday when violence broke out between the warring sides, leaving not less than three persons dead and some 20 more critically injured.

A resident said other miscreants had also taken advantage of the chaos in the area to carry out robberies and other criminal activities, further worsening the peace of the area and creating panic for residents and commuters.

Orient Daily gathered that the suspected cultists allegedly ambushed herdsmen in the Ovre Abraka community bush shortly after their ‘convocation ceremony’ in the bush and on their way to their various homes. They were said to have clashed with the herdsmen who overpowered them with their sophisticated guns and allegedly shot them dead on the spot.

The police public relations officer in the state, Andrew Aniamaka, who confirmed the incident, said the police were investigating the killing. “The police are investigating the incident and no arrest had been made, the victims are suspected cultists. They belong to Vickings and they wanted to attack the suspected Fulani herdsmen as they came out of the bush where they had gone for their cult meeting. Unfortunately, the herdsmen allegedly opened fire on them,” Aniamaka said.

A community leader, Chief Benjamin Oghenevo who spoke to newsmen in the area recalled: “It was at about 3:30am at night when we heard repeated gunshots inside the bush and in the morning we wanted to go there but declined for fear of being attacked because Fulani herdsmen live in the area, however we made attempt and found it was true and we ran away. The police should move into the bush to see things themselves. The Fulani herdsmen are still operating in our community”.

Meanwhile, Anambra state chairman of the Action Democratic Party (ADP), and a political aspirant in Anambra West, Matthias Ameke, has raised alarm over activities of cattle and their herders in the area. Ameke alleged that Anambra West, an agrarian zone is at the risk of a famine come 2019 given an ongoing plundering of their farms by herdsmen.

The former Anambra State chairman of Progressive People’s Alliance (PPA) said that many herdsmen and their cattle roaming the area in search of food were plundering crops in farms, leaving the farmers destitute and unable to repay the loans they got from cooperative societies and banks.

He said that the farmers were in debt and unable to take care of their families given that their farms were being destroyed by activities of cattle on feeding spree on the crops in the farms.

“These Fulani herdsmen have taken over our farms and our people in Anambra West who are predominantly farmers are facing a food crisis period which may degenerate into full blown famine come next season,” he said.

He however said that none of the women had been molested and that the state government had tried to intervene in the matter but without success.

Reacting to the claim, the commissioner of police, Anambra state, Mr Garba Baba Umar, said that the police had started intervening in the matter. Umar said that the police was already checking the rate of influx of Fulani people in the state and had subjected the herdsmen to signing an undertaking before being allowed to operate in Anambra state which he said would make the herdsmen feel more responsible in their interaction with natives.

He added that his command had also started holding aerial surveillance of the zone to monitor the activities of the herdsmen. He enjoined members of the public to lodge formal complaints at the police stations whenever there were such altercations to enable police intervene to restore civil peace.

A young man was apprehended after being spotted in a female hostel at the Kogi State University in Anyigba area, early this morning. 

It was gathered that the suspect was allegedly trying to steal from the students inside the hostel before an alarm was raised and he was nabbed.

Some of the students alleged that the young man was trying to steal their panties and underwear. 

In a video posted online, the female students can be heard shout 'Ole' (thief) as the suspect was brought out of their hostel by the school security and taken into their van.

The President of Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, has said premium motor spirit (PMS) or petrol that will be refined from Dangote Refinery will not be sold at Federal Government’s regulated price.

This ends the speculation about how much the pump price petrol from the first private refinery will attract when it begins operation next year.

Dangote spoke on the sidelines of the visit of Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele to the refinery in Lagos.

Dangote said though the plan is not to concentrate on export entirely, he noted that petroleum products from the refinery will be sold at export rate.

He said it is the duty of the Federal Government to determine the price of fuel, adding that he doubts whether fuel subsidy will continue but if it does, the government can engage the company to find a mid-ground on how to tackle the issue of subsidy.

He said: “We are not here to concentrate on export but pricing of products depends entirely on the government. If there will be subsidy, which I doubt very much, that is the job of government not the job of Dangote to determine what the price will be. But price of our export is what we sell, which will depend on what the market is internationally, and locally if there will subsidy, the government will carry that responsibility and not us. Government has to engage us and see how they can find a mid-ground on that.”
On job creation, Dangote said the refinery and petrochemical project is transformational. Considering that Nigeria depends on importation to meet its fuel consumption needs and the attendant huge subsidy to keep pump price at regulated price of N145 per litre, he said the project will create massive jobs.

According to him, most filling stations don’t sell fuel because of lack of fuel in view of issues around importation, adding that when the refinery begins operation, it will put these filling stations and their workers back to work.

He said: “Currently, more than 26,000 people are working on the project and at the height of the project, the number of workers will soar to about 80,000 people and there will be more than 50,000 workers living internally in the company.”

Emefiele promised the apex bank’s assistance to other refineries’ licencees whose banks can vouch for their credit worthiness.

Emefiele said: “CBN’s support depends on the company’s capacity. I have not seen any other person that has received government licence to set up a refinery. In any case, you don’t come directly to CBN, you have to go through your bank and your bank has to assess your capacity to be able to take on the project.

“My suggestion is that if there are people that have interest in CBN’s support, they should go to their banks and if their banks are able to display their credit worthiness to be able access such facility, CBN is ready to support them in naira and dollar that they need to import equipment that will enable them conduct their businesses.

“I have not seen any, if I see any through their banks, I can assure they will receive this kind of support Dangote got from CBN.”
The CBN supported Dangote Refinery, which will cost $9 billion (N75 billion) and the fertiliser plant which will cost $2 billion with N50 billion. The apex bank chief also stated that the refinery and petrochemical project is funded by 60 per cent of Dangote’s equity with the remaining 40 per cent funded by debts from local and foreign banks and CBN’s support.

According to 25-year-old Chidimma Offor, who hails from Ekwulobia in Anambra state, the journey to the births of her children has not been an easy one but it's been worth it for her.

The graduate of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, took to Facebook to share her pregnancy pictures and wrote;

Leaders and elders from various geopolitical zones across the country have endorsed Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as their preferred candidate.

This formed part of the resolutions at a meeting tagged: ‘Summit of Nigerian Leaders and Elders’, held at Ladi Kwali Hall, Sheraton Hotel, Abuja, on Sunday.

Present at the meeting were leaders of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Northern Elders Forum, Pan-Niger Delta forum, the Middle Belt Forum, as well as a faction of Afenifere, the Yoruba socio-political group.

Participants at the forum said they agreed on endorsing Atiku after meeting with various presidential candidates.

They said the decision not to support President Muhammadu Buhari, currently seeking reelection on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was based on the current President’s loss of control of government.

They also accused the President of dividing the country.

  2019 Elections: No Going Back On Manual Results Collation, Transmission – INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has insisted on manual collation and transmission of the forth coming elections’ results.

The commission’s National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education, Mr. Festus Okoye, told journalists at an interactive session, in Abuja, last night that, the decision to stick to manual collation and transmission of results was in line with extant electoral laws.

We have a Bill for the amendment of the electoral law before the National Assembly. We have to conduct the elections in accordance with the provisions of the existing law. If the National Assembly amends the law, then we can act accordingly. We cannot act outside the law,” he said.

Asked if the refusal of President Buhari to assent to the Bill which had been sent to him by the legislature, the commissioner said, “In spite of the Bill not been signed, we have the capacity to conduct elections that Nigerians will be proud of.”

Mr. Okoye said that necessary arrangements have been made by INEC for the forth coming elections and that the commission would disappoint those waiting to buy votes at the polls.

Ask what strategies have been put in place, in that regard, he said, “The strategies are been kept secret. We will surprise them.”

According to him, two Collation Officers would man each polling unit, with one to collate the presidential election result and move on with it to the Ward level for immediate transmission; while the second collation officer would take responsibility for the collation of the Senatorial and House of Representatives results which would be declared at different level.

The Commissioner disclosed that People living with disabilities, albinism, the elderly and pregnant women would receive special attention at the polling centres.

He also said that voters could vote with any of their fingers, especially given the fact that the space against the parties would be smaller due the their large number.

Mr. Okoye urged political parties to play their roles with a view to making the elections successful.

The Resident Commission in the Federal Capital Territory, Alh. Yahaya Bello urged the media to place premium on national security in their reportage during the elections.

He urged them to avoid sensationalism and fake or unverified reports that could cause violence.

  Pastor’s Son Remanded For Impersonating Naval Officer

A 22-year-old Pastor's son has been arrested and arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly impersonating a naval officer.

The suspect identified as Godswill Francis, whose address was given as No. 3 Orisa Imude Street, Shibiri, Ojo, Lagos, was arrested by police officers attached to the surveillance patrol of the Elere Police Station in the Agege area of Lagos State after he was seen around the POWA shops, Elere Division, putting on an army camouflage T-shirt and a fez cap.

The Pastor's son who is from Delta State, was found to be impersonating a naval officer shortly after interrogation. He is said to be a drummer in his father’s church, and once attended the merchant navy training for a period of four months and was issued a navy ID card, adding that he bought the cap and T-shirt at the Ojo Cantonment.

Punch reported that he said; 

“I was a security agent at the Ajao Estate from 2013 to 2014, after which I started playing drums for my dad at the Mighty Power of God Ministry. I went for the merchant navy training while I was a security agent. I did the training at the Etegbi Merchant Navy School, Shibiri, Ojo, Lagos. I spent four months in training. After the completion of my training, I was given a merchant navy ID card, black combat uniform and a white belt. I lost the ID card given to me and I decided to replace it.

“I bought the navy uniform that I wore when I was arrested at the Ojo Cantonment; I bought the cap at the rate of N300 and the navy uniform at the rate of N500.”

Though he pleaded not guilty to the offence, the presiding magistrate, Mrs T. A. Ojo, ordered the accused to be remanded in prison custody and adjourned the case till February 13, 2019.

RHAPSODY OF REALITIES

EMBRACE THE PICTURE OF THE NEW YOU.

And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God (1 Corinthians 6:11).

Did you know that as one who’s born again, it’s wrong for you to keep seeing yourself as “a sinner?” Many live with this mentality and it reveals why they’re ineffective in their Christian walk. Now that you’re born again, your life is new and divine; therefore, embrace the picture of the new you. You’re the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus; as Jesus is, so are you in this world.

Have a greater consciousness of your new life in Christ. That life gives you power to live above sin. You may ask, “If this is true, why do I still do wrong things and think wrong thoughts?” It’s because you haven’t fully yielded and subjected yourself to the dominion of the Word, to live in, and by the Word.
It reminds of the account in 1 Corinthians 6:9-11, part of which we read as our theme verse.

The Apostle Paul rebuked some of the Christians in Corinth because their way of life didn’t reflect the new nature of righteousness they had received. Yet, he didn’t call them “sinners.” He writes, “Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God” (1 Corinthians 6:9-11).

Notice he didn’t say, “And such are some of you…”; rather, he says, “…and such were some of you,” because now that you’re in Christ, you’ve been cleansed of all unrighteousness. You’ve been washed; separated from sin unto God, and declared righteous, in the Name of the Lord, and by the Spirit of our God!

Recognise your new identity; see the picture of the new you and live accordingly. Study and meditate on the Word; it shows your real glory; it reveals your true personality. You’re the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus!

CONFESSION

I’m the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus; therefore, I live with boldness without any sense of fear, guilt or condemnation, being confident in the Lord who is my righteousness, and in His righteousness, justifies the ungodly. Hallelujah!

The 23-year-old lady, Blessing Aluna from Rimi Lokoja Local Government Area of Kogi State, was arrested alongside one Oludare Jeprince, 36, of Giri Abuja, in the Madalla area of Suleja for abducting a three-year-old child. The mother who disclosed that Jeprince was her boyfriend and an accomplice aiding in the kidnap and sell of the three-year-old baby, stays in the Madalla area of Suleja, had at some point allegedly sold her one-week-old baby for N200,000.
While being interview by Punch's correspondent, Aluna blamed poverty for her involvement in the crime.

The police who said the suspects will be arraigned in court as soon as investigations were concluded, added that they confessed to have been in the child trafficking business for over two years.

Exactly six days ago, we made a post on how the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) are working towards the reduction of the current vehicle import duty from 70% to 45%.

The Comptroller-General of Customs, Col Hameed Ali (retd.) has urged the federal government to reduce the 35% levy on imported vehicles , saying the move is necessary to check the rising cases of smuggled vehicles into the country.

An automobile expert thinks otherwise; he proposes that reducing the import duty of these used cars can be dangerous to the economy.

The Vice-President, Business Development, Dana Motors, Mr Olu Tikolo, on Saturday said that the recent call for the reduction of import duties on used cars portends danger to the 2013 Nigeria Auto Policy.

Mr Olu Tikolo made the call at a media parley at his office, Akin Adesola, Victoria Island, on the partnership between Cars45 and Dana Motors.

Tikolo, on the heels of the recent call made by some stakeholders demanding a reduction on the tariff for imported vehicle by 15 per cent said such reduction could derail the existing auto policy. Saying it is anathema to the desired economic prosperity of the country.

“We must understand the prospect of the 2013 Auto Policy by the previous government which is aimed at encouraging local manufacturing of cars in Nigeria.

“The call for the reduction in the tariff for the importation of used cars portends great danger to the economy and also for investors’ confidence in our economy.

“Only the manufacturing sector can contribute effectively to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country which cars assembly and manufacturing can contribute up to 7 per cent.

“In other advanced countries, car manufacturing contributes up to 12 per cent of their economy, examples are South Africa and Brazil,’’ he said.

Baring any major shifts in the next 12 days, we project that President Muhammadu Buhari would win the 2019 presidential election handily.

The election comes up on Saturday, February 16, 2019.

This forecast is not based on a scientific poll. It is the result of observations and wide-ranging interviews by our political editors and senior correspondents across the country.

We estimate that the president will win with about 60% of the votes, with an error margin of plus or minus 5%.

From our field work, our Board of Editors found out that the PDP has been unsuccessful in making the presidential election a referendum on the president the way the new APC did on President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2015 presidential election.

Instead, the APC has successfully branded the PDP and its presidential candidate as a nightmare, creating the impression that PDP still represents a past of corruption, plunder and misrule. It would have helped the PDP a great deal if it had rebranded with a new name.

The APC’s message appears to have been particularly successful in the rural areas, where many voters still associate the PDP with a sordid record of corruption and “money sharing”.

Though job concerns ranked high among voters in the rural areas, the progress made by the Buhari administration in agriculture and the various financial inclusion programmes targeted at increased food sufficiency, also appear to have provided some comfort, blunting the PDP’s negative campaign on job losses and claims of widespread poverty.

We also discovered that the PDP presidential candidate has been unable to effectively split the votes of the Muslim North with PMB, thus giving the president a huge head start.

Atiku’s credentials as a Fulani and northerner – the same with Buhari – were widely expected to split the vote right down the middle, but field interviews indicated that this has not been the case.

Findings indicated that apart from ethnic affinity, voters were also looking for a candidate that they could trust, giving Buhari a clear edge.

The president has a stronghold on the North West, and surprisingly nearly so also in the North East where Atiku was expected to beat him.

From our findings, PMB will defeat Atiku in Adamawa State, his home state, where the PDP candidate and his protegees have consistently lost both in party primaries and main elections since 2003.

But Atiku would win in Taraba State partly because the exit of Aisha Alhassan, the former minister of Women Affairs from APC greatly weakened the party.

The North Central Zone is a mixed grill where Atiku was expected to do well turning the contest into a referendum on PMB, as many of the people there still blame the president for not taking a decisive action in the cattle herdsmen/farmers crisis.

Atiku is expected to win Plateau State. He should have been able to pick Benue State but the APC has successfully made the Benue struggle a fight between Senator George Akume, the most powerful politician in Tiv land today and Governor Samuel Ioraer Ortom who appears weak. That makes Benue State too close to call.

There would be a titanic struggle in Kogi State but the president is expected to win.

Kwara State will be the most important place to watch. The Stakes are high for both sides. Saraki would do everything to retain “ownership” of the state but the APC appears to have taken winning the state very personal. A strong indication that the tide was turning against the Saraki dynasty was the bye-election into the Kwara South Federal constituency last year, which was won by the APC. Kwara State therefore is too close to call.

Nasarawa is also too close to call. PMB will win in the FCT and win nearly the entire votes in Niger State.

PMB will win easily in all the six states of the South West. Adding the northern votes to the South West alone without the other zones, the president would have already won the election. That was the scenario in the 2015 presidential election.

But there is a tectonic shift in the South East and South South. PMB will get 40% in Akwa Ibom State and more than the required 25% in Cross River and Delta States. The president has a slight advantage over Atiku in Edo State. Atiku will clearly win in Rivers and Bayelsa States.

It should have been a massacre against the APC in the South East all things considered, but Atiku has been unable to get the loyalty of the South East governors. Peter Obi appears to be his achilles heel in South East. The biggest names in South East politics appear to be working for PMB behind the scenes. Thus the president is expected to get up to 40% in Anambra, Abia, Ebonyi, Imo and Enugu States.

But a week is a long time in politics. A lot can still happen. That would depend on the parties and their presidential candidates.

Falana writes Buhari govt to withdraw the case against Onnoghen


A Lagos lawyer and Human Rights Activist, Femi Falana (SAN), has urged the Federal Government to withdraw the criminal charges filed against the suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen.

Falana said he made the request having confirmed that a petition had been submitted to the National Judicial Council alleging grave misconduct against Onnoghen.


February 3 letter addressed to the Attorney General of Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, Falana urged him to advise President Muhammadu Buhari to reverse the suspension because a public officer could not be removed from office on the basis of an ex parte order granted by any Court or Tribunal in Nigeria.



The letter read, “Since the charge of false declaration of assets was filed against the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen at the Code of Conduct Tribunal, by the Code of Conduct Bureau, I have repeatedly requested you to use your good offices to discontinue the case. My request was anchored on the case of Elelu-Habeeb v Attorney-General of the Federation & Ors (2012) 40 WRN 1 where the Supreme Court held that by virtue of Section 292 of the Constitution of Nigeria the head of any of the judicial arms of State and Federal Governments cannot be removed from office without a prior investigation conducted by the National Judicial Council.

“Having confirmed that you have since submitted a petition to the National Judicial Council alleging grave misconduct against the Chief Justice, I am compelled to request you, once again, to file a nolle prosequi to discontinue the charge pending against his Lordship at the Code of Conduct Tribunal without any further delay.

“The charge should not be allowed to hang like a Sword of Damocles on the head of the Chief Justice while he is being investigated by the National Judicial Council. In view of your implicit confidence in the ability of members of the National Judicial Council to resolve the matter you ought to accede to the request to terminate the proceedings at the Code of Conduct Tribunal forthwith.”

Falana posited that the withdrawal of the case from the Code of Conduct Tribunal would lead to the immediate vacation of the ex parte order relied upon by the President to justify the illegal suspension of Onnoghen and the appointment of Justice Tanko Mohammad as Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria.

“Even though by virtue of Paragraph 10 (2) (a) of Part 1 of the Fifth Schedule to the 1999 Constitution (as amended) the Code of Conduct Tribunal is empowered to order any public officer to vacate office the power cannot be exercised until such a public officer has been tried and convicted for breaching the provisions of the code of conduct for pubic officers.

“But as a public officer cannot be removed from office on the basis of an ex parte order granted by any Court or Tribunal in Nigeria we urge you to advise President Buhari to reverse the suspension of the Chief Justice.

“Once the suspension is reversed Justice Walter Onnoghen will then be prevailed upon to resign as the Chief Justice having lost the moral authority to preside over the affairs on the juridical organ of the Government of the Federation.

“However, if his Lordship does not call it quits or if the National Judicial Council does not recommend his removal from office you may wish to exercise your powers under section 174 of the Constitution to prosecute him for failure to declare his assets which is a punishable offence under the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act.

Two Nigerian lecturers die, one injured in ghastly motor accident on their way home after attending a friend's wedding in Jigawa

Two friends, Zaharadeen Hussaini Kaita and Saib Abbantea, were killed in a fatal accident on their way home after attending a friend's wedding in Malam Madori local government area of Jigawa State. The third friend,Yusuf Dot Java was seriously injured and hospitalised.

The accident occurred along Ringim-Kano road. Zaharadeen Kaita was until his tragic death, a lecturer with Isa Kaita Polytechnic Katsina- while Java was a lecturer at Nuhu Bakalli Polytechnic Zaria.

The groom, Babangida Isyaku, took to Facebook to pay tribute to the men and pray for the speedy recovery of the third. Also see posts by friends, family members and colleagues.

and his failed and discredited Party, the APC
that Nigeria is bigger than them and there is no way Nigerians will allow them to rig the 2019 general elections or achieve their self-succession plan.

Our history has amply shown that no individual, no matter the authority wielded, has ever succeeded, at any point in time, in subduing the spirit of our nation or place our people under a siege, not even the importation of mercenaries into our country can change that reality.

The world can recall how certain leaders in the past attempted to subvert our constitutional democracy, arrogate excessive powers to themselves and how they failed in the face of the Nigerian spirit.

Today, that Nigerian spirit, with which we won our democracy and nurtured it to this stage, is being assailed by the APC and the Buhari Presidency with their unrelenting constitutional breaches, attacks on our democratic institutions, violation of human rights, etc.

There is a ferocious attempt to take away our liberty as a people. There is total clampdown, arrest and detention of dissenting voices; invasion of media houses, manhandling and illegal detention of journalists by state forces have become the order of the day.

Our nation will never succumb to Buhari
Presidency’s assault on our nassnigeria
, the attack on our judiciary and besieging of the 
inec where President Buhari’s relation is being foisted as the head of the collation center.

Only last week, the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), after consideration of all factors, reinforced the global unanimity and affirmation by various credible and independent bodies within and outside Nigeria, that 
Atiku will win the February 16, Presidential election.

Today, the APC and the Buhari Presidency have become uncontrollably feverish over the overwhelming acceptance gained by Atiku in all the geo-political zones, particularly in the North West states, hitherto considered as President Buhari’s political stronghold.

The PDP wants President Buhari
to note that Nigeria will not fall. Our country, as a nation of over 200 million resilient men and women, is bigger than President Buhari as well as the 
APC and would resist all anti-democratic forces.

Nigerians have chosen democracy with its tenets, as a way of life, including justice and constitutional freedom it offers the citizens to determine who their leaders should be at any given time, and nobody, not even President Buhari, can take away this freedom and rights

The Chief Press Secretary to Gov. Darius Ishaku of Taraba, Hassan Mijinyawa, who was abducted on January 30 has regained freedom.

Mr Bala Dan -Abu, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Media and Publicity confirmed this to newsmen on Sunday in Jalingo.

He said the CPS was released in the late hours of Saturday and had been reunited with his family.

The senior special assistant said no ransom was paid for his release and the CPS was hale and hearty.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Mijinyawa was abducted by unknown gunmen while on his way to Gembu along Bali-Gashaka road. (NAN)

Deposit money banks in the country may be in for a tough time following Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN’s) planned introduction of fresh capital rules in the second quarter of the year.

This is because, the new rule, called, the Basel 111 or International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS 9), though desirable for international competitiveness and engendering confidence in the sector, is seen by some operators as a big threat with many banks currently weighed down by bad loans, occasioned by economic downturn.

Some fear that the modeling, which is like a new methodology of assessing loan loss provisioning, may become an Archile’s hill for some banks with the resultant polarisation of the sector between those that can afford the wherewithal for the technological know-how and those that cannot.


“The new rule would mean a significant change to what they have been doing before, and for some, it may mean changing their accounting software used in deriving the reporting figure or preparing their accounts. The result could be emergence of the Big Five versus the rest Banks,” says an analyst at the weekend.

In fact, analysts at InvestmentOne Research believe that the new requirements could trigger mergers in the industry. “We believe that this new requirement could lead to further mergers and acquisitions in the medium term,” they said.


The IFRS 9 would mean that most banks might be reporting on it for the first time. Specifically, it has proposed that banks adopt a radical change in their loan loss provisioning. Previously banks were allowed to adopt the incurred loss model, which is based on incurred bad loans but under new rule, banks are expected to adopt expected loss model when making provision for non-performing loans, meaning that expected loss is futuristic, implying a kind of provision based on modeling which most banks are not used to.

CBN, it was further gathered, plans to apply the leverage ratio to supplement existing capital ratios for lenders, as well as additional loss-absorbency requirements for domestic-systemically important banks.

The new rule is an international regulatory framework consisting of agreed set of measures developed by the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision in response to the financial crisis of 2007-09, aimed at strengthening regulation, supervision and risk management of banks.

It is also an order to promote stability in the international financial system, with the purpose of reducing the ability of banks to damage the economy by taking on excess risk.

The new capital requirement seeks to more specifically define what constitutes the various regulatory capital classes and enhance liquidity requirements, strengthen corporate governance and improve risk disclosure, and also improve transparency and disclosure with regulations that build upon the BASEL II accords, which all Nigerian banks are currently in compliance with.

The apex bank migrated banks to a new accounting standard known as IFRS 9 in January 2018 to improve disclosure by forcing lenders to provide for existing losses, as well as those that might occur.


The transition led to most banks shedding as much as 200 basis points off their equities and some tier II banks are still finding it difficult to raise their capital adequacy requirements above the regulatory benchmark and also led to at least one takeover deal – Diamond Bank Plc by Access Bank Plc.

The new requirements, according to the CBN, will be stricter in terms of what funding qualifies as capital and will also require lenders to create “capital conservation” and “counter-cyclical” buffers.

The rule also seeks to protect the nation’s banks “against shocks emanating locally and from abroad” by increasing the level of regulatory capital and the quality of the assets, the CBN said.

CBN says it is aligning itself with a global accord known as Basel III, three years after a contraction in Nigeria’s economy spurred authorities to delay the implementation of tougher capital rules. It also comes after policy makers in 2013 spurned some requirements drawn up by the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision.

Sunday INDEPENDENT investigations further showed that the current anxiety is as a result of knowledge gap in the implementation of the International Financial Reporting Standard, (IFRS) generally; adding that implementation of the IFRS 9 will change the balance sheet of banks.

According to an analyst, “Even in the UK, it is a big issue, and because nobody has done it before, finding expertise will be difficult in Nigeria and also within the Financial Reporting Council, (FRC), agency that is supposed to ensure full compliance.”

Specifically, Nigerian authorities migrated banks to a new accounting standard known as IFRS 9 last year to improve disclosure by forcing lenders to provide for existing losses as well as those that might occur in the future. While the average capital-adequacy ratio for the industry rose to 12.1 percent in June from 10.2 percent at the end of 2017, some banks said the transition shaved as much as 200 basis points off their capital bases.

But Sunday INDEPENDENT gathered that while some lenders are struggling to contend with non-performing loans equal to 12.5 percent of total credit, an improvement from the almost 15 per cent in 2017, many small- to medium-sized banks are battling to raise capital, resulting in the current discussions in the industry over survival strategies.

Managing Director, Heritage Bank, Mr Ifie Sekibo, said although the implementation will be tough at the beginning, but things will shape up after a while.

“It will affect us at the initial time when we are taking the heat. But it is a zero-sum game for me. Down the line after three to four years, it comes down. Because, if today you believe borrower is not going to pay and the economy improves and he pays tomorrow, it goes back to your profit.

“So, initially we are all going to feel a jolt. There will be a depression in some of our earnings because we are taking more heat. But it speaks to the strength of the bank. And that strength of the bank is what the customers need to be comfortable about that. After all, you have a bank that is still able to carry your liabilities”.

Analysts at Renaissance Capital (Rencap) are of the opinion that 2019 will be a challenging year for the Nigerian banks and the implementation of these rules will make things worse for the banks in the year.

“We expect top-line earnings growth will remain weak across the board, and compounding this we see limited scope for further asset quality improvements. With 2019 being an election year, we expect no meaningful activity in the Nigerian banking sector until 2H19 at the earliest. We would welcome a change in CBN governor, but that would present some uncertainty, the analysts said.

Speaking of IFRS 9, the analysts said the implementation which began on 1 January 2018 has led to lower net asset values (NAVs) for the Nigerian banks.

“During the year, the CBN introduced a four-year transitory period for the full implementation of IFRS 9 in the computation of capital ratios. Simply put, in computing capital ratios, the banks can now amortise the impact on retained earnings over a four-year period. As stipulated by the CBN, 40 per cent of the day-one impact will be taken in year one, while the remaining 60 per cent will be amortised over the next three years, on a straight-line basis. The IFRS 9 impact on NAVs also supported the uplift in RoEs,” The analysts said.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner, Joseph Iloh, confirmed the development to newsmen on Sunday. According to him, the arsonists broke into the INEC’s office through the window.

He however said that although the PVCs and the register were burnt, that the commission’s headquarters in Umuahia, the state capital, has the authentic list of registered voters.

The Economic and Financial Crimes, EFCC, Enugu Zonal Office, has arrested 13 suspects for allegedly engaging in cyber crime and internet fraud.

Three of the suspects were arrested on January 17, 2019 at Awka, Anambra State, following intelligence reports and surveillance carried out on them. Six were arrested at Ngwo in Enugu State, while four were arrested at an estate in Abakpa area of Enugu State.

Items recovered from them include nine exotic cars ranging from Toyota Avenza, Toyota Lexus, Toyota Hillux, Toyota avalon,Mercedez Benz among others. Others include laptops, printers, cameras, phones, expensive drinks and other personal effects.
The Zonal Head of the South East Zone of the commission, Ahmed Imam Usman, while addressing the Press on February 1, 2019 said the raid was consequent upon the resolve ofthe acting EFCC Chairman, Ibrahim Magu to intensify the Commission’s fight against internet and cyber fraudsters across the country.
He said:

Quote:“We have resolved as part of carrying out the commission’s mandate to stamp out internet scams, advance fee fraud and other related crimes and help in rebuilding the image of the country.
Quote:“Apart from public corruption which affects us locally, and denies us access to basic social amenities, Nigerians are treated badly because of the activities of cyber criminalsand this gives us a bad name internationally. We are determined to stamp that out.”
Charges have been drawn against the suspects and have been filed in court; they will soon be arraigned.

Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Comrade Timi Frank, has raised the alarm over what he described as a plot by the Presidency and the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to use military, Police and other security agents as presiding officers during the 2019 general elections.


Frank said the plot which has been perfected by top echelons of the presidency in collaboration with INEC and Security agencies is to ensure a decisive win for President Muhammadu Buhari and all the candidates of the APC during the elections.

Frank, in a statement issued to DAILY POST on Sunday, said, “We have authentic information that the worse will be witnessed in the 2019 general elections as the presidency and the INEC have concluded plans to deploy military and other security agents as presiding officers – disguised as civilians – to aid the APC in winning the elections


“This is most appalling as it is coming at a time when the use of military personnel for election duties has become anathema in other climes. The present administration is not only plotting to use them to intimidate, harass and arrest key opposition leaders before, during and after the forthcoming elections but to deploy them as presiding officers in polling units across the country disguised as civilian personnel to thwart the express will of the Nigerian voter.

“I hereby call on the Prof. Mahmood Yakubu-led INEC to redeem its image by desisting from this brazen partisanship unexpected of an electoral umpire anywhere in the world. Yakubu ought to have resigned following the confession by Buhari that the APC won last year’s Governorship election in Osun State by “remote control.”

He stated that part of the plot is to allow the influx of millions of foreigners – that INEC has since registered – into the country through the nation’s porous northern borders to vote for the APC in all the scheduled elections.


He added that the presence of two governors from Niger Republic – Issa Moussa of Zinder and Zakiri Umar of Maradi – at Buhari’s Campaign rally in Kano last week was not an accident but that their illegal presence was carefully choreographed to test the waters ahead of voting on February 16 and March 2.

He further stated that the illegal removal and trial of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, is an integral part of the rigging script already designed by Buhari and APC to guarantee their victory either fair or foul.

He insisted that the military’s Operation Python Dance III which has already commenced nationwide is part of the plot meant to intimidate the opposition ahead of the elections and to forcefully ensure that elections results are manipulated to favour the APC.

He condemned the anti-democratic plot in strong terms and called on the international community especially election observers already in the country to help monitor the activities of the Prof. Mahmood Yakubu-led INEC to ensure that they carry out the exercise in line with international best practices and devoid of prearranged manipulations.

He stated that his earlier alarm notwithstanding, the INEC’s boss has continued his nocturnal rendezvous with top government officials aimed at perfecting their undemocratic plot, including the deployment of soldiers to serve as Presiding Officers during the elections.

He also called on past Nigerian leaders like General Yakubu Gowon, Ibrahim Babangida, Abdulsalami Abubakar and Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, among others, to caution the military on the dire implication of being used to derail the nation’s democracy.

He thanked the Governments of the United States, United Kingdom and European Union for their avowed readiness to place visa restrictions on sponsors and perpetrators of rigging and violence during the forthcoming polls.

He further urged the EU, UK and US to extend their proposed visa ban to any Staff of the INEC including its Chairman, National Commissioners and State Resident Electoral Commissioners found to have used their privileged positions to assist the ruling APC in rigging the elections.

He urged Nigerians to take their destiny in their hands by resisting the planned stealing of the people’s mandate by Buhari and the APC.

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Port Harcourt Zonal Office have arrested six suspected internet fraudsters at their hotel hideout in Rumuigbo, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

A statement from the antigraft agency says they were arrested on Friday, February 1, 2019 in a sting operation.

The suspects, comprising four men and two ladies are: Oghenekewe Innocent Akinnawo, Kemka Godseat Amadi, Revelation Macaulay, Damilola Adedoyin Oyinloye, Mary Ndubuisi and Jennifer Vandi.

Their arrest followed series of intelligence report linking them with alleged fraudulent activities ranging from love scam on numerous dating sites, obtaining money by false pretences and other fraud still being investigated.

Several items were recovered from them at the point of arrest. Some of them are three exotic cars: Benz- E350-4Matic; Toyota Camry XLE and Benz- GLE 450. Others are four iPhones, four laptops; one iPad, one iron sealed stamp; cheque books, car number plates and two un-used bullets. 
They will soon be charged to court.

SERAP sues Babatunde Fashola, asks him to name contractors who disappeared with project money

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has sued the Minister of Power, Works and Housing Mr Babatunde Fashola SAN over “failure to disclose specific names and details of contractors and companies that allegedly collected money for electricity projects but failed to execute any projects, starting from the return of democracy in 1999 to 2018.”
 
In the suit number FHC/L/CS/105/19 filed last week at the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos, SERAP is seeking “an order for leave to apply for judicial review and an order of mandamus directing and/or compelling Mr Fashola to provide specific details on the names and whereabouts of the contractors who collected public funds meant for electricity projects but disappeared with the money without executing any projects.”
 
The suit followed SERAP’s Freedom of Information request dated 4 January, 2019giving Mr Fashola 14 days to publish “the names of all contractors and companies that have been engaged in the power sector since the return of democracy in 1999 to date, details of specific projects and the amounts that have been paid to the contractors and companies, details on the level of implementation of electricity projects and their specific locations across the country.”
 
The organization said: “publishing the names will make it hard for contractors and companies to get away with complicity in grand corruption. The citizens have the right to see that the Freedom of Information Act is enforced where there is an infraction of the right to information or a threat of its being violated, in matters of public interests.”
 
The suit filed on behalf of SERAP by its counsel, Adelanke Aremo read in part: “by compelling Mr Fashola to name the contractors and their registration details, if any, Nigerians will be better able to hold them to account for allegedly absconding with public funds meant for electricity projects, thereby throwing the country into perpetual darkness and socio-economic stagnation as well as denying people their human rights.”
 
“Granting the order as prayed would ensure that allegations of complicity in grand corruption by contractors and companies in the power sector do not go unpunished. Unless the names of the contractors and companies are disclosed and widely published, alleged corrupt contractors and companies executing electricity projects will not be deterred and the victims of corruption that they committed will continue to be denied justice and effective remedies.”
 
“To date no contractors or companies who allegedly collected money for electricity projects not executed or poorly executed have been investigated for corruption let alone prosecuted and fined. Senior public officials who apparently served as intermediaries for these contractors and companies continue to escape justice.”
 
“The allegations of corruption involving many contractors and companies in the power sector have continued to impair, obstruct and undermine the ability of successive governments to provide Nigerians with access to regular and uninterrupted electricity supply. Contractors and companies that allegedly disappeared with public funds meant for electricity projects may also be liable for aiding and abetting the commission of acts of grand corruption.”
 
The suit is seeking the following reliefs:

  1. AN ORDER directing and/or compelling the Respondent to compile and make available to the Applicant do cuments containing the specific names and details of contactors and companies that have been engaged in the power sector since the return of democracy in 1999 to date, details, of specific projects and the amounts that have been paid to the contracts and companies, details on the level of implementation of electricity projects and their specific locations across the country and to publish widely including on a dedicated website, any such information
  2. AN ORDER directing and/or compelling the Respondent to compile and make available to the Applicant documents and information containing the specific names and details of contactors and companies that allegedly collected money for electricity projects but failed to execute any projects, starting from the return of democracy in 1999 to 2018 and to publish widely including on a dedicated website, any such information
  3. AN ORDER directing and/or compelling the Respondent to disclose if there is any ongoing investigation or prosecution of allegedly corrupt contractors and companies in the electricity sector
  4. A DECLARATION that the failure of the Respondent to provide the Applicant with information containing the specific names and details of contractors and companies that have been engaged in the power sector since the return of democracy in 1999 to date, details, of specific projects and the amounts that have been paid to the contractors and companies, details on the level of implementation of electricity projects and their specific locations across the country, and failure to widely publish it on a dedicated website, any such information amounts to a fundamental breach of the Freedom of Information Act 2011
  5. A DECLARATION that the failure of the Respondent to provide the Applicant with specific documents and information containing the names and details of contractors and companies that allegedly collected money for electricity projects but failed to execute any of such projects, starting from the return of democracy in 1999 to 2018 and failure to widely publish it on a dedicated website, any of such information amounts to a breach of the Freedom of Information Act 2011
  6. A DECLARATION that the failure of the Respondent to disclose if there is any ongoing investigation or prosecution of allegedly corrupts contractors and companies in the electricity sector amounts to a breach of the Freedom of Information Act 2011
  7. AND for such further order or orders as the Honourable Court may deem fit to make in the circumstance.
“Publishing the names of contractors will contribute to ending a pattern of corruption in the power sector and improve access of Nigerians to regular and uninterrupted electricity supply. It will also allow citizens to track the level of execution of electricity projects by contractors and companies and reduce impunity for corrupt acts in the sector.”
“Granting the reliefs sought will ensure that punitive and dissuasive measures are taken against corrupt contractors and companies, shareholders and others that might have any ownership interests in companies responsible for failed execution of power projects in the country.”
“Former Nigeria’s Vice President and Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar blew the whistle on Channels TV when he said, “We collected money from local, state and federal governments and others. Contractors were given some contracts and were paid hundred percent upfront. Up till now, we are not holding the contractors responsible. People have collected money upfront one hundred percent and have disappeared; and have not even done any work.”
No date has been fixed for the hearing of the suit.

Angry mum attacks military teacher with a matchete for flogging her child in Port Harcourt

A military teacher escaped being butchered to death in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, as the wife of Air Commodore Irobuisi (NAF2042) attacked him with a machete.
 
According to reports, the victim had taken disciplinary action against Mrs Irobuisi’s daughter by flogging her. However, when the lady was informed, she drove down to the Air force Secondary School with a hidden cutlass which she used to attack the teacher’s face while discussing with him.
 
The injured soldier has since been rushed to the NAF Reference hospital, Port Harcourt, while Mrs Irobuisi is currently being held at provost squadron of 115 sog. According to reports, Mrs Irobuisi isn’t a stranger to assaulting military officers and was once suspended from the Nigerian Air force Officers Wife Association for the same reason.
