The Creative Industry in Nigeria has received the attention of the Bankers’ Committee of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), for the commencement of disbursement of funds to the sector under its Creative Industry Financing Initiative, in which beneficiaries could get up to N500million as loan.

This was disclosed yesterday, at the end of the Committee’s meeting held at the CBN headquarters in Abuja, which had in attendance, chief executives of all the Deposit Money Banks in Nigeria, as well as other top officials of the apex bank.

Addressing journalists shortly after the meeting, the Director, Banking Supervision Department, CBN, Mr Ahmed Abdullahi, said the decision to support the creative industry was borne out of the Committee’s conviction that the sector held the key to job creation, poverty reduction, and inclusive growth.

He was accompanied to the briefing by the CEOs of FBN Merchant Bank, Kayode Akinkugbe; Ecobank Nigeria, Patrick Akinwuntan; FSDH Merchant Bank, Hamda Ambah; Citibank, Akin Dawodu; and CBN’s Director of Corporate Communications, Isaac Okoroafor.

Other issues discussed at the meeting included consumer lending, mortgage financing, and the need to encourage the culture of savings among Nigerians.

Providing more insight into the outcome of the meeting, Akinkugbe urged interested applicants in the creative industry to submit applications to their banks for approval and disbursement.

He also urged them to prepare the business plan or statement on how much they require for their businesses.
On real estate, he said the Committee has decided to unlock the huge liquidity that various people have in the sector, to enable banks to boost their contribution to the sector towards adding value to their consumers.

He said: “We have had good dialogue in the past and there is recognition in the Bankers’ Committee that it is time to execute a lot of the initiatives that have been considered by the various sub-committees and acted on immediately.

“Another initiative discussed is in the real sector, we want to release the trapped liquidity that various investments that people have in the real estate in land or in property. Recognizing that there are some obstacles but ultimately we must find a way to navigate through.

Crude oil theft: Police chase illegal bunkerers in Delta, destroy products

Officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force led by the Warri Area Commander, ACP Mohammed Mukta Garba, Friday chased illegal bunkers and destroyed a large quantity of “illegally refined” Automotive Gasoline Oil, AGO, and kerosene in Mason community, Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State.
The products destroyed by the police operatives were loaded in drums, jerrycans and sacks. Others were hidden inside a wooden boat.

No suspect was arrested in the sting operation which lasted for an hour, as the illegal bunkers ran away when they sighted the Police coming towards their direction.
In a chat with newsmen, the Warri Area Commander of the Nigeria Police, ACP Mohammed Mukta Garba said the exercise was meant to warn the illegal bunkers to desist from the criminal business which pollutes the environment and endangers the lives of the citizens.
ACP Garba said he will not condone illegal bunkering within his jurisdiction, stressing that he acted following a tip-off that some elements were sabotaging the Federal Government through illegal bunkering in the area.

“I received information from above that I should come and see the place. The information was true that some people are sabotaging federal government by doing illegal bunkering.
“This is a sound warning to them. I am here to work for the Federal Government and I will not condone illegal bunkering.
“I will make it uncomfortable for them, they must desist from the illicit business.”

Garba warned his officers against compromise, saying: “anyone caught would face the full weight of the law.
“The police will take action against any officer that comprised. They should work as Police Officers. Of course, I do not think a sensible police officer will be a party to illegal bunkering.
“It is drizzling and I am here to perform my duty as a Police Officer. It is going to be a continuous exercise.”

ACP Garba also said he would write an invitation letter to leaders of Mason community after seeking and getting permission, to come and explain why they harbour illegal bunkering in their land.

KWARA State Road Maintenance Agency (KWARMA) has begun massive rehabilitation of 10 roads across Ilorin, the state capital, including the long-neglected Offa Garage Roundabout Road.

This followed the release of N20m by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for immediate rehabilitation of roads that are in bad state and needed urgent fixing in the capital city.

General Manager of KWARMA Usman Baba Jibril, an engineer, said it has already started massive rehabilitation works on the Offa Garage and Geri Alimi-Asa Dam roads.
The governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Rafiu Ajakaye, said the agency has the mandate to quickly fix the roads to end the nightmares of the people.

“We have started work immediately based on the fund the governor has just released to KWARMA and Kwara State Asphalt Plant,” Jibril said.

He listed other roads to be covered “under Phase 1” to include Isale Aluko-Kokorokan-Ita Kudimoh Road; Adeta-Al-Hikmah road; Olorunshogo-Geri Alimi road; Kaduna Road, Adewole; Osere-Cemetry road; General Hospital- Geri Alimi; Offa Garage Geri Alimi Road; and Sani Okin Road.
Jibril said they have a mandate to complete the rehabilitation within the next seven days, with the phase two of the works likely to begin very soon.

AbdulRazaq had said last week that he would embark on rehabilitation of roads within the metropolis and other parts of the state in phases
He lamented the poor state of the roads across the state, adding that the government would collaborate with the Federal Government and private sectors on some of the roads, especially federal roads.
But, Abdulrazaq has reiterated the assurance of his administration to create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive in the state.

The governor stated this yesterday when he paid an unscheduled visit to Olam Grains and Cashew Processing Factory at Ogbondoroko in in Asa Local Government Area.
AbdulRazaq, who lauded the economic impact the factory offers the people of Kwara State and Nigeria at large, especially in the areas of job opportunity to a minimum of 1,500 people, assured that government would encourage the expansion of business across the state.

Reacting to the complaints of the Association of Cashew Farmers and Dealers, he promised to invite them for an interface at an appropriate time towards addressing their problems.

The Plant Manager Olam Cashew Processing Factory, Mr. Sajjad Hussein, stated that there are five stages involved in cashew processing and would take up to eight days before the end product is realised.
The governor used the occasion to commission a water project provided by the company for Ogbondoroko community, as part of its corporate social responsibility programme.

Nigeria To Lose $9 Billion Assets Over Aborted Gas Project
*British court decides on Friday

A firm incorporated in the British Virgin Islands will ask a British court on Friday for the right to seize up to $9 billion of Nigerian government assets - some 20% of the oil-rich nation's foreign reserves - over an aborted gas project.

The case highlights a risk to Nigeria's foreign assets, potentially clouding its appeal to some investors.

The request is part of a long-running saga over a 2010 deal in which the Nigerian government agreed to supply gas to a processing plant in Calabar on the country's southeast coast that Process and Industrial Developments Ltd (P&ID) - a little-known firm founded by two Irish business men specifically for the project - would build and run.

When the deal went south, P&ID won a $6.6 billion award at arbitration, based on what it could have earned during the 20-year agreement. It now says the total owed has ballooned to $9 billon because of interest accrued since 2013 .

Nigeria has tried to nullify the award, saying it was not subject to international arbitration but British courts rejected the argument. P&ID is now asking the Commercial Court in London to convert the arbitration into a judgement, which would allow them to try to seize international assets, a report in DailyMail UK said.

A source close to President Muhammadu Buhari said they were fully aware of the matter and the government "is not sleeping", adding they were optimistic the matter could be resolved in the courts. There are also proceedings pending at a U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C.

Buhari, who was inaugurated for a second term on May 29, has not yet appointed cabinet ministers, and officials contacted by Reuters said the lack of an attorney general or petroleum minister made it difficult for anyone to comment on the record.

"This is a problem that the Nigerians are not facing up to in any serious way," said Andrew Stafford, Q.C. of Kobre & Kim LLP, which is representing P&ID.

Experts said it would be difficult for Nigeria to fully extricate itself.

"Under UK legislation, state immunity does not operate to protect a sovereign state where it has entered into an arbitration agreement," said Simon Sloane, a partner with UK law firm Fieldfisher.

He added that going after state assets following arbitration had become a well-trodden path over the past 15 years and it would be difficult for Nigeria to avoid paying compensation.

While assets that are used for diplomatic purposes - such as the Nigerian High Commission building in central London - were off the table, commercial assets were up for grabs.

In 2008, a UK court ruled that proceeds of oil sales from Chad held in an international account intended to repay World Bank loans were fair game for seizure.

Experts also said that the involvement of hedge fund VR Group, which has a stake in PID, signalled that it is unlikely to let the issue drop.

"They could still come to a settlement," Sloane said. "As it's a consensual process the parties can agree to settle, and settle for significantly below the $9 billion figure."

Debt overhang looms in Nigeria

In a recent paper by Brookings on the danger of accumulation of debt by African countries, he expressed concerns for African countries racking up debts. Sadly, Nigeria came to mind. While putting finishing touches to this article this morning, the news broke that the Nigerian debt has risen by N2.66trillion in one year! This translates to about $8.7.

It is a common prayer in Nigeria that ‘may we not leave debt for our children’. You will gauge from the chorus ‘Amen’ that that is seen as an important prayer. But is debt bequest a bad thing? Can we avoid it? If not, what sort of debt and how much of it can be left for the children? Finally, is Nigeria moving towards a debt overhang? Answering all these questions leads us to starting from understanding the concept of debt overhang.

Debt overhang, a phenomenon that applies to individuals, households, business entities and government alike, refers to a situation whereby even though new debt will improve the profile of an entity, it is unable to access it because the present level of debt is such that the benefits of additional debt is deemed to be subject to partial appropriation by the existing debt holders.

A structural macroeconomic debt overhang is a condition where additional credit creation measures are engaged in to address an underemployment or output gap, the build-up of which leads to a debt overhang. It so happens that in most scenarios, the debt overhang is preserved by substituting one form of public debt for another and it keeps growing.

Debt overhang has various negative consequences. In the literature, its major consequence of serving as a disincentive for investment attracts my attention as a perspective. The importance of investment as a factor of economic growth is emphasized by the employment channel. Through the employment channel, investment enhances, not only productivity, but also the general welfare of the citizenry, thereby leading to economic development.

But debt overhang hinders investments. For instance, an economic entity is forced to pass up investments that yield positive net present value (NPV). A positive NPV is a selection criterion for some projects and when profit-oriented entities have to pass up investment alternatives just because it does not have additional capacity to take up debts to execute such alternatives, opportunities to add value is lost. For a nation, this ultimately leads to a GDP growth that is less than its potential. The concern in this instance is Nigeria.

Not only is Nigeria the most populous black nation in the world, but also one of the world’s fastest growing countries in terms of population. Indeed, it is projected that we will have a population of about 400million by 2050.

This growth is not peculiar to Nigeria. The whole of Africa which has roughly 1 billion in population today is expected to have grown to 4 billion by that time with Nigeria contributing its own quota of 10%!

Recently, Nigeria added $2.86b to its debt stock (November, 2018) thereby moving our total debt stock to about $76b. This is inclusive of states’ $11b+ portion of the debt. The tenor of this new debt are 7years, 12 years and 30years. With the life expectancy at birth in Nigeria, ranked at 178th in the world by the World Health Organization in 2018, currently at about 55 years for male and 56 years for female, most of the current actors in consummating this loan will not be alive by the time the last tranche is paid in 2048. That is if there are no restructuring.

The truth is more are on the way when you project our debt profile. For instance, from a foreign-denominated loan portfolio of below $1b up till 1993 when we joined the loan-billionaire club, we have gradually trended upwards to around $76billion. The current foreign-domestic borrowing ratio profile is 86:14.

The DMO has the mandate to tilt the ratio to 60:40. The idea behind this is to free up domestic funds available from competition between the private sector and the government. Apparently, the availability of government debt instruments which is almost always well over-subscribe tends to stifle the potential growth of the private sector with its pivotal growth implication on the economy when funds they can use are equally competed for by the government.

The flipside to this mission is that rejigging the combination imposes more attention to dollar receivables over a long period as shortfalls may portend danger.

The concern for accumulation of debt is valid. If you review the trend, it is going up perpetually even when oil prices go up. Secondly, the debt to income ratio which measures the tendency for revenue to cover debt is also going-up and it is projected that in about 5 years, revenue will no longer be able to service debt. This, if it crystalizes is a dire situation as the international rating agencies will write our ratings down.

Thirdly, there are some doubts about the total capture of our debt stock. What that means is that the debt-GDP ratio of about 18%+ which we currently refer to as a healthy level when compared to the estimated headroom of about 56% for countries of our development status, may be incorrect. If this is so and some local government debts and other uncollateralized debts have been excluded, then our current debt-GDP ratio may be incorrect and we may actually be nearer debt trap than we think. Lastly, there is a concern over our foreign exchange receivables over that length of time. Considering that over 80% of our current foreign exchange receipts come from oil, and developments in the oil markets particularly as it relates to transition to renewable energy, the implication on price in the future is anything but heart-warming.

In order to address our concerns, we need to note that the source of debt is budget deficit. For budget deficit to be bridged, there is the need for borrowing. According to the DMO, in the 2018 budget, there is a funding gap of over N2.1trillion of which N1.6t is to be met with domestic and foreign debts of N750b and N850b respectively.

Sovereign debt is an equivalent of financial leverage for a company. Just as this leads to growth for some institutions which think through, it can be an albatross for others who spend loans on frivolous things. Therefore, debt is not necessarily bad if it leads to development. Conversely, a low level of debt, debt/GDP ratio, such as 21.3% for Nigeria in 2017, is not necessarily good if the debt make-up is not justifiable.

After all, since 1990, our highest point was at 75% in 1991 and lowest was 7.3% in 2008. For some countries, debt appears linked to economic growth and development. Cases in point are the US which has $19t in debt and is the largest economy in the world, and Japan, the third biggest economy in the world have debt/GDP ratio in excess of 250%. But the ownership of the public debt gives another dimension to the issue. As seemingly alarming the debt/GDP ratio of Japan is, less than 5% of that portfolio is owned by foreigners while only one-third of the American debt is owned by foreign countries.

Curiously, our current budget deficit looks like the subsidy for fuel. Whether we should and what level of subsidy the country can provide on fuel and the management of oil subsidy is a discussion for another day.

To make debt worth-while, we need to do a number of things. Firstly, it needs to be channeled towards investment as debt that are obtained to fund life-style or towards crass expenses or spending can be akin to smoking a stick of cigarette which gives satisfaction while smoking it but cannot be relied upon to give such satisfaction in medium time. Soon after, you feel like smoking another stick and the remnant you can see is the stub. Snugly tied to this point is that debts should also be project-targeted. For instance, the sum of $350m was specifically borrowed to enhance the Port Harcourt refinery in 1988. This involved the enhancement of production from 60,000 barrel per stream day (bpsd) to 210, 000 bpsd. This approach allows for ascertaining in specific terms the purpose of debts.

The process should not only be transparent, debts should be taken to build capacity. The return on investment should be undertaken. Only when the return is justifiable should such loans be taken. In order words, debts should be tied to project that are not only self-liquidating, but also such that will have multiplier effects on the economy. For instance, a 1995 study of the effect of software producer Microsoft on the local economy revealed that each job at Microsoft created 6.7 new jobs in Washington State, whereas a job at Boeing created 3.8 jobs.

Targeting such multiplier effects are critical.
A rigorous cost-benefit analysis and link to economic growth should be a pre-requisite for obtaining loans. For instance, it seems that over time, for us in Nigeria, there is a correlation between debt pile-up and poverty. Poverty seems to be perpetually increasing with these debts. In comparison, countries like China who had over 750 million poor people years ago now have just about 10 million in that category.

This is in contrast with Nigeria with the number of poor people seemingly increasing on a yearly basis. And now, on the World Poverty Clock, 86.9million people live in extreme poverty putting Nigeria as the number one nation usurping India with a population that is more than 6 times Nigeria’s. This will continue to be so for as long as our GDP growth rate, currently below 2% falls short of population growth rate which is currently just below 3% per year which should put Nigeria as the third most populous country in the world by 2050.

These two growth rates directly affect the per capita income of a country.

Allowance should be given for maintenance of projects. Currently in Nigeria, such allowances are either not given, not adequately given or consumed altogether with corruption. The maintenance culture is important for us to continue to reap the full benefits of our investment. All our refineries now operate below installed capacity because of this problem and we now find ourselves in the trap of importing what we have the capacity to produce.

A comprehensive plan is critical. Good projection about national budget deficit and projects will give option on timing of debts. For instance, the cost of debt for SA, obtained earlier in the year, is cheaper than ours. An important integral part of this is the institutionalization of a capital budget plan and framework which a new government should put in place within its first 6 months which will run for 3 years with serious accountability responsibility up to the highest level of the national assembly. In this new age of knowledge economy, know-where and know-when are increasingly becoming more important than know-how and know-what (mere facts!).

The different timings for Nigeria’s foreign debt as well as that of South Africa this same year comes to mind. Whereas, South Africa obtained loan at 6% in May. Nigeria obtained loan at 9.75% in October. In the space of few months, there has been about 33% increase in the cost of debt. By implication, Nigeria has started a catch-up race with South Africa from Day One in terms of putting the project to use and should then have the potential of earning more in order to compete with the equivalent South African project. This scenario is needless if our administration has a better ‘know-when’ appreciation.

Tied to this penultimate issue is the growth rate of the economy. Comparing our cost of debt with economic growth rate gives a gloomy scenario. If we compare our economy that is expected to grow at 2% by year end with 9.75% cost of debt literarily means that whereas the Nigerian economy, to which the funds is applied will grow at 2%, we will add 9.75% in value to the lender of the funds, whether country or institution.

The engagement of the federal legislators by the populace is critical. The truth is that the total number of legislators in both houses, of 469, in conjunction with the executive, consummate this debts on our behalf. Once the budget is approved, it implies that the 200 million Nigerians have approved it. We need to see representation as a very serious business. The consciousness on the part of the electorates is currently missing. By some of the actions of the federal legislatures on budgeting, you find it difficult to argue that the consciousness on issues of debt is not also lost on the majority of them. We deserve the best people to take decisions at the highest level of consciousness and responsibility.

Waste and cost of governance are also too high in Nigeria. When we engage in needless debate about infrastructure as a major driver of growth which creates an enabling environment for businesses to thrive, we need to acknowledge that the level of waste and cost of governance is too high. This can be attested to by the mind-boggling level of appointments at all levels of executive and a wanton waste of resources. Eradicating waste and drastically reducing cost of governance will unarguably create a healthy headroom to allocate resources to enhance the level of infrastructure.

Expanding our revenue base is of importance. In alliance with the position of the IMF, our tax base may currently be adequate but not efficient as there are loopholes still to be blocked. This concern for an inadequate revenue base is founded in the fact that a budget deficit is inseparably attached to deficit budgeting arising from insufficient revenue to meet budgeted expenditure. For instance, as of May 2017, only 14mio people of 70million taxable Nigerians pay taxes.

This means 80% of economically active and taxable Nigerians still evade taxes. Of the big five economies in Africa, Nigeria with the biggest economy, has by far, the least tax revenue to GDP of 6.1%. This compares with 26.9% for South Africa and 10.33%, 11.6% and 18.4% for Angola, Ethiopia and Kenya respectively. Even though this may be a reflection of poverty spread, the 80% of economically active Nigerians which are currently evading taxes shows that there is a huge room for improvement. This leakage adds to the leakage from the grossly under-taxed Nigerians.

Again, to compound the situation, corruption cannot be taxed! The issue of tax structure is indeed a discussion for another day. When these tax leakages, which have multiplier effect are combined with the unjustifiable economic-rent- driven government concessions, there comes the inevitable realization that some of our sovereign debts are probably needless as a proper revenue capture would have made these debts unnecessary.

In conclusion, whereas an accumulated public debt in itself and a high debt/GDP ratio is not necessarily bad, the structure of ownership between domestic and foreign should be watched. Most importantly, how transparent the process is in addition to the economic justification of the debt, debt planning, the timing of the debt, paying attention to the revenue base of the country as well as dogged implementation of projects are of utmost importance.

The rising debt service as a percentage of revenue which the DMO warned against in its recent Debt Sustainability Analysis (DSA) and which IMF warned as being extremely high at 63% before the last foreign debt, can only be reined in if in addition to the mentioned palliatives, our currency does not suffer depreciation. This looks like a tall order considering the current macroeconomic situation and outlook.

Oyetola Cries To Buratai As Criminals Take Over Osun

Quote:*INSECURITY: Osun under siege, Oyetola cries out

*As Makinde vows to stop kidnapping in Oyo

State, yesterday, cried out over the rising spate of kidnapping, banditry and armed robbery in the state calling for deployment of a joint patrol outfit to tackle the security challenges.

This came as Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State expressed his determination to provide adequate security measures to forestall such occurrence in the state.

Oyetola raised the alarm at the headquarters of the Nigerian Army when he paid a courtesy visit to the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Tukur Buratai.

The governor said he was at Army headquarters to commend the COAS for approving the construction of a Bridge across the Osun River to Ede, which will greatly assist the state by boosting the economic wellbeing on the people.

He said: “I am here to bring to your knowledge that the spate of crime is increasing in Osun and around us. It is giving me a serious cause for concern and as you know, the primary function of government is to ensure security for the people for economic progress and development.

“To address these challenges, the state (Osun) has decided to establish a joint patrol operation comprising the Police, Nigerian Army and the NSCDC. I have written to your office in this regard but I deemed it important to come see the Army leadership due to the concern I attach to tackling these security challenges.

“Though we, in Osun State, are challenged by paucity of funds, we are prepared to support the security agencies with vehicles, equipment because crime is on the increase.”

Responding, Buratai said: “Your presence here today shows level of commitment you have for the security of the state. We will do everything possible to support the effort because fighting crime is part of our constitutional responsibility.”

Reassuring the governor on the request, the COAS said: “Your request is well understood. We must do it responsibility. We will do everything to ensure the Army unit in Osun is properly equipped.”

Makinde vows to stop kidnapping

Meanwhile, Governor Makinde assured the people to keep the state safe from bandits.

The governor gave the assurance following calls by members of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ, and other stakeholders who were at the state secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan on a peaceful demonstration to call attention of the government to the increasing spate of kidnapping and banditry in the country.

The peaceful walk tagged: Walks for Stop The Kidnapping Now took off from the ancient Mapo Hall, Ibadan, before terminating at the Agodi State Secretariat.

Speaking through his Chief of Staff, Chief Bisi Ilaka after receiving the protesters, the governor assured that the security of lives and property of people of the state remains paramount in his mind and would always make it a top priority.

Ilaka said: “Governor Seyi Makinde is a governor that understands his duties and responsibilities as the Chief Security Officer of this state and I know and speak without any fear of contradiction that he owes the life of every single person in this state sacred and he will not tolerate or allow any pervading insecurity around Southwest to extend to Oyo State.”

“I am sure the governor will use his office to champion the cause for a secured Southwest. I also know that our father that we all know, Chief Olu Falae who is a leading light in the Afenifere movement also suffered in the hands of these obnoxious individuals who are popping up all over the place. We say to you, we will not allow such to happen in Oyo State.”

Gunmen Kill 40 In Niger State - Emergency Management Agency

At least 40 people have died and dozens were injured in raids by armed bandits in eight remote Nigerian villages, the emergency services said on Thursday.

Groups of gunmen riding motorcycles stormed into the farming and herding villages in Shiroro district of central Niger state on Sunday, firing indiscriminately and stealing cattle.

“For now, 40 bodies have been recovered,” Niger State Emergency Management Agency spokesman Ibrahim Audu Hussein told AFP.

Search and rescue teams are still recovering bodies in the bush and the final toll will be announced later,” he said.

Dozens of people were injured in the raids which forced over 2,000 villagers out of their homes, he added.

Hussein said the bandits took away hundreds of herds of cattle from the villages.

The villages include Kwaki, Ajatayi, Gwassa, Barden Dawaki, Alewa and Sarkin Pawa.

News of the attacks was slow to emerge due to the “difficult terrain” and poor telecommunication in the area, said Salihu Garba, another emergency official.

The bandits are believed to have launched the attacks from Rugu forest which straddles Zamfara, Katsina, Kaduna and Niger states.

Kidnapping and cattle rustling gangs have been terrorising communities in states in the country’s northwest but attacks in Niger state are rare.

A Nigerian Pastor who allegedly raped a lady he was supposed to pray for and also threatened to kill her with a gun if she revealed what transpired between them, has been paraded after he got arrested alongside suspects. The pastor in charge of the Gate of Testimony Church, Hosanna Okoi, who claimed his church was located in Sierra Leone, was arrested after a lady reported to the police that she was raped and also threatened with a gun not to report the incident. The Pastor who however denied claims that he raped the lady he was supposed to pray for, denied knowing who she was but admitted taking her to a wedding and later to a pub.

He stated, “I am a Nigerian, but I am the pastor of the Gate of Testimony Church based in Sierra Leone. I came to Nigeria and I met the lady, who said she was going to a wedding.

“I did not know her from Adam, but I offered to take her there and gave her N500 to drink water. Later, we met at a pub and we drank and that was all that happened. I did not take her to anywhere and I don’t know why she decided to frame me up.”

Father who murdered his five children is sentenced to death

A South Carolina father has been sentenced to death for killing his 5 children with his own hands after which he drove around with their bodies for 9 days.

Timothy Jones Jr., 37, was sentenced to death on Thursday, June 13, one week after he was convicted of five counts of murder.

The computer engineer with an $80,000-a-year job murdered his kids, ages 1 to 8, in their Lexington home in August 2014. Afterwards, he drove around with their bodies for nine days before dumping them in garbage bags on the side of a dirt road in Alabama.

Solicitor Rock Hubbard told jurors Jones has been selfish all his life and tried to break up his father’s second marriage because he wasn’t getting enough attention.

In  his own marriage, he controled his wife's every decision. When his wife left him, Jones couldn’t stand that his control was over so he took his anger out on the kids. Whenever any of his kids indicated any intention of wanting to be with their mother instead of him, he mistreated them, Hubbard said.

Jones first killed 6-year-old son Nahtahn after the boy confessed on the phone to his mother, but not to him his father, that he broke an electrical outlet, Hubbard said. Over the next several hours, Jones got cigarettes, took his oldest daughter first so she wouldn’t call for help, and left the three other kids with their brother’s body.

In a confession, Jones said he strangled 7-year-old Elias with his hands and chased down 8-year-old Merah before choking her. He then used a belt to choke 2-year-old Gabriel and 1-year-old Abigail because he said his hands were too big.

After killing the children, Jones loaded their bodies into his SUV and drove around for nine days before dumping them in five black garbage bags on a dirt road near Camden, Alabama. He was arrested hours later after an officer at a traffic checkpoint in Smith County, Mississippi, said he smelled a horrible odor of decomposition.

During the trial, Jones' father, stepmother, sister and two brothers all took the stand to ask that he be given life without parole, instead of the death sentence. Jones' father removed his shirt to show the courtroom tattoos of his slain grandchildren.

Jones ex-wife, Ms Kyzer also requested mercy for her ex-husband even though she had said "If I could personally rip his face off, I would."

"He did not show my children any mercy by any means," she said. "But my kids loved him and if I'm speaking on behalf of my kids and not myself, that's what I have to say."

Timothy Jones Jr. showed no emotion as the jury delivered the verdict after less than two hours of deliberation, according to TIME. Jones’ father, who was in court, hung his head in his hands as the verdict was read and other family members appeared to cry.

Jones is the second person to be sent to South Carolina’s death row in five years. The state has not executed anyone since 2011 and lacks the drugs to carry out lethal injection.

'Its time to begin an impeachment inquiry into President Trump' - Former FBI Director, Andrew McCabe

Former acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe on Thursday said that the time has come to begin an impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump.

During an interview with CNN, Chris Cuomo asked McCabe, "Do you believe that an impeachment inquiry is warranted based on what you understand and what has come out of the Mueller report?" "Absolutely, I think we are clearly there with the results of the special counsel team," McCabe said.

Quote:He went on to add, "there are so many witnesses who could provide important essential testimony to Congress that can only be done in the scope of an impeachment inquiry." He said "that action should be taken immediately," and that it is "beside the point" whether the inquiry results in articles of impeachment.
"I think the American people have a right to hear from the witnesses and understand exactly what actions the President engaged in, and they have the opportunity to factor that information into their decisions, their voting decisions, whatever that might be going forward. The time has come to get that information out," he said.
Former Attorney General Jeff Sessions fired McCabe in March 2018, less than two days shy of his expected retirement on his 50th birthday, when he would have become eligible to receive early retirement benefits. Trump had regularly taunted McCabe and accused him of misleading internal investigators at the Justice Department.

McCabe's dismissal followed an inspector general report that concluded he had misled investigators about his role in directing other officials at the FBI to speak to The Wall Street Journal about his involvement in a public corruption investigation into the Clinton Foundation.
After his firing, McCabe fired back, charging that his dismissal was part of a larger effort by the administration to discredit the FBI and the special counsel's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

The Oyo State Police Command have arrested two suspected fraudsters, Taiwo Salami (39) and Kamorudeen Amusat (63), who hypnotised a sales girl and collected the N1.4 million her boss sent her to deposit in a bank. They raped her multiple times after hypnotizing her and then collected the money found on her.

Parading the suspects before newsmen yesterday Thursday June 13th, the state Commissioner of Police, Shina Olukolu, said the victim (names withheld), was sent by her boss on May 6th at about 11:30 a.m. to deposit N1.4 million at a bank in Dugbe area of the city.

Quote:“On her way, she was accosted by one of the suspects, Taiwo Salami, who hypnotised her, and having lost her senses, she was taken to an abandoned house at Inalende area of the city, where the cash was collected from her, while the suspects also inflicted several injuries on her.  On May 8th, the victim’s family members reported her disappearance at the divisional police headquarters at Mokola. She was later rescued and taken to the hospital for medical attention.
“The case was then transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, and on June 7th, following a tip-off, the suspects were arrested around Eleyele, and upon interrogation, they confessed to the crime,” Olukolu said.

One of the suspects, Salami, said when he saw the victim, he sensed she had money and that was how he approached her and hyponotised her.
Quote:“She then followed me to Inalende area, where she was kept in a room in an abandoned building and the money collected from her.”

The police commissioner said the suspects would be charged to court upon conclusion of investigation into their crime.

RHAPSODY OF REALITIES

FRIDAY, 14TH JUNE.

DON’T HOPE FOR LUCK

Blessed shalt thou be in the city, and blessed shalt thou be in the field (Deuteronomy 28:3)

Some people go through life groping in the dark, hoping that someday, they might just be lucky and things will work out for them. You’d hear them make statements like, “Maybe, if I’m lucky, I’ll get the contract”; “maybe if I’m lucky, I’ll get the appointment I’ve been desiring.” They’re hoping for luck in their finances, in their businesses, and even in their relationships. Such people haven’t been exposed to the light of God’s Word.

Don’t hope for luck. Don’t hope that God might just do something, no! You’re already a blessed person. Do you know what that means? It means nothing is too good for you or beyond your reach. Being born again, you don’t function by luck; you walk in the Word. The Word of God is your light: “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path” (Psalm 119:105).

The light of God in your spirit will direct you to be at the right place at the right time, walking in paths preordained by God. The light of God in you causes you to walk in divine favour. God’s got everything fixed in your behalf. He has the right people to help you, at the right time, and in the right place.

The Bible says, “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28). With this understanding, say to yourself: “God has the right people to help me, at the right time, and in the right place; He’ll guide me to them, or He’ll guide them to me. One way or another, we’ll meet.” Hallelujah!

Remember, He’s already blessed you with everything you require for life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3). He’s already blessed you with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ (Ephesians 1:3). Live as a blessed man or woman. Be blessing-conscious; don’t hope for luck.

PRAYER

Dear Father, I thank you for blessing me with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places, in Christ Jesus. I don’t lack anything good because all things are mine. Thank you, Lord, for you have the right people to help me, at the right time, and in the right places, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

FURTHER STUDY

Deuteronomy 28:3-6 Blessed shalt thou be in the city, and blessed shalt thou be in the field. 4 Blessed shall be the fruit of thy body, and the fruit of thy ground, and the fruit of thy cattle, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep. 5 Blessed shall be thy basket and thy store. 6 Blessed shalt thou be when thou comest in, and blessed shalt thou be when thou goest out.

Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.

#TALKINGSESSION

14TH JUNE.

KINDLY SAY THESE WORDS OUT LOUD
Dear Heavenly Father, I thank You for Your eternal and infallible Word, which has reshaped my understanding and perception of life. I am made in Your image and in Your likeness; therefore, my words are faith-filled and powerful, transforming circumstances and changing situations to conform to Your perfect will for me.

My delight is in Your Word, which I cherish more than my necessary food! My mind is renewed, and my spirit conditioned by Your Word for greatness! I am like a tree growing by the stream, blooming and blossoming with fruitfulness, and impacting my world with Your righteousness, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

A woman is lucky to be alive after being thrown out of a speeding vehicle in Lagos.

Ifeoma Nwaoma boarded a commercial bus at Iyana-Ipaja around 2pm on Friday. Unknown to her, it was a bus operated by criminals known as one-chance. Four men and an elderly woman were already in the bus before she got in.

Shortly after the bus zoomed off, she sensed she had entered a one-chance bus and asked to be dropped. But the driver increased his speed. She was then threatened with death after which her bag was collected and they threw her out of the speeding bus.

She lost consciousness and woke hours later to be informed that she went into a coma and it was a good Samaritan who found her and brought her to the hospital. She was told she would have died if she hadn't been brought in for treatment immediately.

The victim suffered horrific injuries to her head, face, arms and shoulder when she landed on the hard pavement and she shared photos of her injuries to go with her story.

He then grabbed her, strangled her and raped her. He deposited his sperm in her. Yesterday morning, having involving an activist/lawyer, he pleaded and offered a compensation of 50,000 which my sister and her lawyer refused. When the police got involved, he had disappeared. The hotel management claimed they didn’t see him leave. My sister is still in the hospital.   US man is convicted of kidnapping his stepdaughter when she was 11, holding her hosta

US man is convicted of kidnapping his stepdaughter when she was 11, holding her hostage for 20-years while he raped and abused her, fathering nine children

An evil stepfather has been found guilty of raping his stepdaughter and impregnating her nine times after kidnapping her and holding her hostage for 19 years.

60-year-old Henri Michelle Piette kidnapped Rosalynn McGinnis when she was 11-years-old from her home in Poteau, Oklahoma in 1997. He held her captive for 19 years and avoided detection by traveling across Mexico and the U.S.

Piette “married” Rosalyn in the back of a wagon in Wagoner, Oklahoma when she was 11, and his 15-year-old son officiated the wedding, according to the FBI, The Sun reports.

Rosalyn, now 34, managed to escape from Piette back in 2016 with her children while they were all living in Mexico. She told KSHB in an interview that she was sexually abused, became pregnant at aged 13 and gave birth to her first child at 15 in the back of a van.

However, she said she suffered a miscarriage, and Piette forced her to flush the foetus down the toilet.

She said: “I was scared, and I was so confused and didn’t even know what was happening.

“Looking back on what happened to me, I don’t even know how any human can do that to a child — what he did to me.”
McGinnis also revealed that she was just nine years old when her mother started dating Piette. He began sexually abusing her during their relationship, she said.

In 1997, her mother broke up with Piette because he had been beating her. He then retaliated by kidnapping McGinnis from school with the help of his son.

The victim endured two decades of horrific abuse by the defendant. Her courage led her to escape and rescue of her children and allowed investigators and prosecutors to seek justice on her behalf,' U.S. Attorney Brian J. Kuester said.

'Ultimately, her courage ended the defendant's reign of terror. I know this verdict cannot heal the countless wounds inflicted by the defendant. It should prevent him from ever inflicting more.'

Piette who avoided detection by traveling across Mexico and the U.S. when McGinnis was declared missing was eventually arrested in Mexico in 2017 when he went to the U.S. embassy to obtain a new passport. He was extradited back to Oklahoma to face charges.

A federal grand jury indicted him in December 2017.

Following his arrest, Piette denied ever raping his stepdaughter in an interview with Fox 23.
'99 per cent are lies….I'm telling the truth,' he said at the time. 'I never raped any children. I made love to my wife. We were married.'

Piette is facing life in prison after being found guilty of kidnapping and travelling with intent to engage in a sexual act with a juvenile.

Buhari Goofs On Reelection Date, GDP Growth Projection - The Cable
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion
Posted by: Edoman - 06-13-2019, 05:25 PM - No Replies

Quote:President Muhammadu Buhari gave a wrong date on when he was reelected into office while speaking to millions of Nigerians in Abuja on Wednesday.

In his Democracy Day speech, Buhari also gave wrong figures on Nigeria’s GDP growth projection for 2019.

In the speech, a copy of which was obtained from Femi Adesina, his spokesman, the president said he was reelected in March, and that the country’s GDP is projected to grow at 2.7 percent in 2019.

The speech read:”In the face of these (Nigeria’s) challenges, our government elected by the people in 2015 and re-elected in March has been mapping out policies, measures and laws to maintain our unity and at the same time lift the bulk of our people out of poverty and onto the road to prosperity.”

“Following the 60 percent drop in oil prices between 2015 and 2016, through monetary and fiscal measures, we stimulated economic growth, curbed inflation and shored up our external reserves. We now have witnessed 8 quarters of positive growth in the economy and our GDP is expected to grow by 2.7 percent this year.”

For the record: While Buhari was declared winner of the presidential election on February 27, he was also issued his certificate of return on same day.

In his 2019 budget speech, the president had stated the projected growth rate of Nigeria’s GDP to be 3.0 percent while the International Monetary Fund and World Bank had said Nigeria’s economy will grow by 2.1 percent.

It is not clear the reason for the gaffe but this is not the first time Buhari will be guilty of such.

While speaking during one of his campaign rallies in 2018, the president had said he assumed office on May 19, 2015, instead of May 29.

“I assure you that I am very aware of your appreciation of the efforts for what we were able to deliver since (we) came in 19th of May, 2015,” he had said.

In a similar campaign rally in Ekiti state, Buhari also said he came into office in 2005 whereas he was first elected president in 2015.

SEC, NSE set to attract more listing in capital market

•Stocks sustain rising profile with 1.07% gain
To woo more firms to list on the nation’s bourse, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), have announced plans to make the processes of listing on the Exchange more efficient and cost-effective by streamlining the approval process between the two regulators.

According to NSE, the streamlined process, which will become effective June 1, is aimed at reducing the regulatory burden on issuer’s by eliminating duplication of processes between the SEC and NSE.

“With the streamlined processes, the SEC and the NSE will carry out joint site visits of companies intending to get listed, following the registration of their securities with the SEC.

“In the same vein, certain offer documents such as the Vending Agreement, Underwriting Agreement, Trust Deed and ISPO, identified to be strictly within the jurisdiction of the SEC are to be submitted only to the SEC. Also, The Exchange will rely on SEC for approval of offer documents such as a Prospectus.”

The Ag. Executive Commissioner, Operations, SEC, Isiyaku Bala Tilde, said: “Streamlining the issuance process with the listing process of the NSE is a major milestone for the Commission in its quest to create an enabling environment capable of attracting new listings.”

Similarly, the Executive Director, Regulation, NSE, Ms. Tinuade Awe, said: “I commend the SEC for working with us in streamlining the listing process for securities on the exchange. The NSE is much obliged for the SEC’s demonstration of a worthy example of effective collaboration all through this process in the interest of the market.”

The upturn was significantly impacted by value appreciation recorded in some medium and large capitalised stocks, Nestle Nigeria, Beta Glass, Mobil Nigeria, MTN Nigeria, and Dangote Cement.

Mysterious creature resembling Harry Potter's elf is seen in a woman's driveway (video)

A woman was shocked when her security camera captured a mysterious creature on her driveway.

The creature resembles Dobby, the elf in Harry Potter,  and is seen walking beside a car in the driveway. At some point, the creature seems to clap its hands.

Sharing the shocking video to Facebook, Vivian Gomez wrote: "So I woke up Sunday morning and saw this on my camera and am trying to figure out...what the heck?? First I saw the shadow walking from my front door then I saw this thing....has anyone else seen this on their cameras?? The other two cameras didn’t pick it up for some reason."

She also assured people that she didn't alter the video. She asked that the media should use whatever technology they use to verify such videos to see that she's telling the truth.

Web users are convinced the creature is an alien. Some say it looks like Harry Potter's Dobby.

It is not enough to declare June 12 a work-free day when Nigerians still suffer from the suffocating grip of poverty - Atiku tells Buhari

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has said June 12 remains a threshold in Nigeria’s national life and demanded some soul-searching from Nigerians.

Abubakar said in a statement in Abuja on Wednesday that the day was one to ask the salient question of “How better off are Nigerians?”  According to him June 12 demands something bigger than merely declaring it a Democracy Day.

Quote:“June 12 is at the soul of our democratic struggle; a threshold in our national life. The significance of the celebration of June 12, 1993, Presidential Election is a reminder of our history to becoming a democratic country. On this day 26 years ago, Nigeria voted for democracy against the jackboot notion of oppressive totalitarianism.
“The collective decision by Nigerians to elect democracy on that day was not to aggrandise the political elite or to replace military dictatorship with civilian autocracy. No. The choice of democracy was to restore power to the people,” he said.
“It is not enough to declare June 12 a work-free day when a disproportionate number of citizens are not sure of where their next meal will come from and when the sanctity of their lives is not guaranteed. It is not enough to declare June 12 a work-free day when freedom of the press, and of speech, fundamentals of democracy is being assailed.”
“Today, the minimum requirement for any June 12 convert is to demand of them wherever they may be – either in government or in private lives – to deliver on the promises they made to the people. June 12 is about the political leadership having the focus to retool the Nigerian economy.
“It is about having the skills to create wealth and jobs for the teeming mass of unemployed. It is not about the inclination for shared pains; it is about shared prosperity. As we celebrate yet another episode of the June 12 struggle, the desire for hope is more preponderant today much as it was 26 years ago. So, for all true lovers of democracy, let us keep the hope alive.”

Update: Cuba Gooding Jr.  to turn himself in to police  for allegedly groping woman in NYC

Oscar-winning actor, Cuba Gooding Jr. will turn himself in to police over allegations he groped a woman at a Manhattan nightspot.

The "Jerry Maguire" actor is expected to face a charge stemming from an alleged incident over the weekend at Magic Hour Rooftop Bar & Lounge.

His lawyer, Mark Heller confirmed that Cuba will surrender on Thursday to the NYPD special victims unit that's leading the investigation before going to court for an arraignment.

The 29-year-old woman told cops the actor grabbed her breast while they were socializing around 9 p.m. at the Magic Hour Rooftop Bar and Lounge on 7th Avenue in Midtown, Page Six reported.

The woman said Gooding was “highly intoxicated” and that, after the alleged grab, she got into an argument with him that had to be broken up by security.

The 51-year-old has denied the allegations. He told TMZ that he was at the bar partying with friends but didn't touch anyone.

"I trust the system and will let the process speak for itself," Gooding said. There's a tape that shows what really happened and that's the most important thing — let's not take away from that."

In an interview with The Daily Mail, lawyer Mark Heller said he a watched surveillance video that shows his client's interactions with the 29-year-old woman at Magic Hour Rooftop Bar & Lounge and it shows Gooding did nothing wrong.

Heller said he's reached out to the Manhattan District Attorney's Office to discuss the video evidence.

'We're not sure if he's going to turn himself in,' Heller said. 'If he hasn't committed any crime, there's no reason for him to turn himself in. The video captures the whole evening and it shows he did nothing wrong. They can't arrest someone who did nothing wrong.'

Heller said the video shows Gooding doesn't touch the woman's breast, hug her or do anything inappropriate. He did note that the video merely shows the woman handing him a glass of water.

However, an NYPD source said police also watched the video and that it supports the woman's contention.

'I saw the video and there's no doubt he touches her breast,' the source said. 'We're not going against the victim. The video corroborates what she said.'

'It's a quick thing,' he said of the alleged groping. 'He's drunk, he's all over her. He puts his hands on her lap then touches her breast.'
'You don't notice a reaction immediately,' the source noted, but said the woman did call 911 to report the incident.

Govt has impoverished Nigerians to oppress to them, says Ezekwesili

                            [Image: xy0ktkqturbxy80mtvhyzljoti5ztczowmwytzln...m0bva.jpeg]
Former Minister of Education, Dr Oby Ezekwesili, has asked Nigerians to take charge of their future, adding that the passive nature of citizens was being exploited by the political class.

Ezekwesili who lamented that bad governance had brought the country to its knees, said the missing link for a great future for the country was absence of citizens power.

She spoke on Wednesday at an event in Ikeja, Lagos, commemorating the June 12 Democracy Day in honour of Chief MKO Abiola.

The event, organised by the Pro Democracy Movement, was attended by business expert, Pat Utomi; former Kaduna State senator, Shehu Sani, Akwa Ibom State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mike Oginni and Muhammed Fawehinmi, the son of late prominent lawyer, Gani Fawehinmi.

The convener of the BringBackOurGirls Movement said since democracy is government of the people, by the people and for the people, those at the helms of affairs should be bothered about the high rate of poverty in Nigeria, a problem Abiola wanted to resolve before his mandate was stolen.

She said, “What was the rate of poverty when Chief MKO Abiola enunciated a manifesto that talked about farewell to poverty? What you can see clearly from the indicators is that poverty has increased. What has happened between 1993 and now is that Nigeria has overtaken India, a nation that is about six times its population, by having the largest number of extremely poor people in its population. Today, according to the world poverty map, we have some 93 million extremely poor people among us.

“If you have 93 million people living in poverty, then it means that you must focus the government on them. But what has happened is that the political class has monopolised the political and governance space and taken absolute control, excluding the citizens for whom the democracy should be for. The political class has weaponised poverty as an instrument of perpetual control.

“Unfortunately, some of the 93 million people don’t vote and when they have the power to vote, they don’t clearly know how to exercise that vote in their own interest. What do you then do when the excluded have a way of conspiring with a system that has excluded them to entrench the exclusion?”

Ezekwesili said blaming voters who sell their votes and engaging in political and civic education could no longer solve the problem.

She explained that privileged Nigerians should rather use their positions to uplift the poor to be able to change their orientation, improve their productivity and “remove the pittance that has entrenched them in poverty.”

The former minister explained that for Nigeria to be better, there was the need for leaders with strong character, competence and capacity.

Ezekwesili said the greatest honour the government could give Abiola was to show that it was easier and faster to tackle poverty in the 21st century than it was when he was alive.

“I have seen that when countries are governed by people who get it, what they need are sound policies, strong institutions and effective and efficient investment in public goods and services; when citizens have them, they attain a height of productivity and lift themselves out of poverty,” she added.

She said Nigerians must also speak up against bad government, adding that since legitimacy lay with the people, the government relied on Nigerians.

“The citizens occupy the highest office. What will guarantee progress in perpetuity is the office of the citizens. We must all make a commitment to activate our office as citizens; that we are tired of being docile citizens of Nigeria and thinking of ourselves as powerless. You are powerful beyond what you think. Stop swallowing your voice. Stop being distracted by daily bread issues. We need a coalition of forces of citizens to say, ‘we can reclaim our land.’

“This is not about tribe; it is about the massive exclusion of the majority of the citizens of the land from what governance should be all about. When you see concepts like adherence to the rule of law, participation, responsiveness, transparency, accountability, equity and equality, then you know there is good governance. But when you don’t see these, then you know there is no good governance,” she added.

Sani in his words, noted that June 12 was not just about Abiola, but about Nigerians rejecting military rule and accepting democracy.

He said Nigeria in the last 20 years had only witnessed civil rule.

“We have not got to the promised land yet. We have seen elements of military mentality in the psyche of Nigeria’s political class. There have been violation of fundamental human rights, disobedience to court orders, refusal to accept democratic principles; breach of the constitution is still the order of the day. If we want to build a strong and virile nation, our constitution must be our compass and guiding principles,” he said.

Health stocks end Q1 with weakest profit since 2016 recession

Listed Nigerian Healthcare companies, after two successive years of growing profit from the 2016 recession level, saw their bottom-line decline significantly in Q1 2019, with figures showing a 3- year low.

The combined first quarterly profit of health-related stocks on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) dipped 62.98 percent in Q1, as all the firms which have reported their earnings scorecard noted a drop in profit- with the exception of two players which only pared their losses in the quarter.

Data from NSE show the cumulative profit of health companies dropped from N687.11 million in Q1 2018 to N110.2 million in Q1 2019, after it had appeared to be reaching its pre-recession high of N850.67 million which was achieved in 2014.
Healthcare companies covered in the analysis are Ekocorp, Fidson, GlaxoSmithKline, May & Baker, Morison, Pharma Deko, Neimeith, and Union Diagnostics.

The double-digit decline in profit, was on the heels of revenue woes of the companies as the average sales decline stood at -15.13 percent in the period.

GSK however in the period improved its sales by 19 percent and Morison recorded of 29.29 percent more revenue, while Pharma Deko, at -74 percent, suffered the biggest decline which affected its bottom-line.

The constraint on PharmaDeko was “due to working capital deficiency as company funds are tied down as a result of a temporary suspension placed on cough syrup containing Codeine by the Federal Government,” the company noted in its Q1 2019 earnings report.

For the recently concluded quarter, Ekocorp reported a loss of N53.92 million, 19 percent less than it had earned in the same quarter of 2018 while Fidson’s profit plummeted by 29 percent, dipping to N144.89 million.

GlaxoSmithKline made 60 percent less profit in the period showing N102.44 million as against N258.29 million garnered in Q1 2018 and M&B’s bottom-line shrank 18 percent to N133.59 million.

Morison was able to pare its loss by 20 percent, even though the company was unable to turn the corner in the quarter. PharmaDeko and Neimeith recorded significant upset in their books, with both healthcare companies reversing previous profit positions by as much as 500 percent to post losses.

Union Diagnostics pared its profit by 68 percent, to 32.83 million, overall showing a grim quarter for health stocks on Lagos Bourse.

Nigeria’s healthcare sector, proxied by human health and social services, fell year –on-year by 0.37 percent and quarter-on-quarter by 9.54 percent in the first quarter of 2019, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics.

Similarly, pharmaceutical and chemical products manufacturing GDP fell by 8.24 percent quarter-on-quarter, although it improved by 1.36 percent year on year, the first quarter GDP report of the state funded data agency showed.

Stanbic IBTC, FBN Capital, ARM control 85% total mutual fund AUM

Stanbic IBTC Asset Management Limited, FBN Capital, and Asset & Resource Management Limited (ARM) led the pack of fund managers with the highest assets under management (AUM), accounting for 85 percent in N741 billion total mutual funds, according to figures from Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC).

For the week ended May 24, Stanbic IBTC Asset, which has eleven different funds across seven asset classes, topped 23 others with N329.8 billion net asset value (NAV), representing 45 percent of the total mutual funds NAV.
A mutual fund is a company that pools money from many investors and invests the money in securities such as stocks, bonds and short-term debt.

The combined holdings of the mutual fund are known as its portfolio. Investors buy shares in mutual funds, and each share represents an investor’s part ownership in the fund and the income it generates.
Meanwhile a fund’s NAV represents the net value of an entity and is computed as the total value of fund assets less total liabilities.

FBN Capital Asset Management, a subsidiary of FBNQuest, emerged the second biggest fund manager, with NAV worth N173.4 billion, nearly half compared to Stanbic’s figure.

The fund manager controls six different funds across seven asset classes. Asset & Resource Management (ARM) trailed with N63.8 billion, with four funds.

FSDH Asset Management Limited and AXA Mansard Investment Limited also featured in the top five list of largest fund managers with AUM worth N38.4 billion and N25.9 billion respectively. While the former has three funds under its custody, the latter controls two.

The fund managers with the lowest AUM include PAC Asset Management Limited, Lead Asset Management Limited and Capital Express Asset and Trust Limited, with NAV at N765.9 million, N383.5 million and N328 million respectively.

Analysis of total funds managed by the 24 fund managers shed slightly by 0.58 percent to N741 billion as at May 24 2019, compared with N745 billion in the previous week, 15percent more than N645 billion at start of the year.
The marginal decline in total mutual funds is largely attributable to slim dip in money market funds, which accounts for 76 percent of the entire mutual funds.

Money market funds, which comprise investment in short-term securities such as treasury bills, commercial papers and certificate of deposit, halted its 3-week bullish run, to slide 0.83 percent to N599.8 billion in the last week of May.
Stop rates across different tenors of Treasury bills declined in two consecutive primary market auctions last month, a major causal factor behind the drop in money market funds, according to analysts.

Stop rates on 182-day and 364-day tenors at Central Bank of Nigeria auction on May 15, slows to 12.3 percent and 12.49 percent respectively from 12.49 percent and 12.77 percent at the previous auction, while the rate on the 91-day bills was retained at 10 percent.

Rates on 182-day and 364-day tenor further dropped to 11.95 percent and 12.2 percent respectively, as buy pressure heightens.

Fixed income funds grew 0.94 percent to N77.5 billion, bond funds up 0.24 percent to N18 billion, equity funds were down 1.41 percent to N11.3 billion, with real estate funds remaining unchanged at N45 billion.

Stanbic IBTC Money Market Fund, with AUM worth N262 billion, which nearly halves the N559 billion total money market funds, emerged the largest in the entire mutual funds.

Followed by FBN Money Market Fund (N163bn), ARM Money Market Fund (N57bn), Stanbic IBTC Dollar Fund (N35bn) and AXA Mansard Money Market Fund (N26bn)

“I am hoping that the government of today, beyond naming the stadium after Abiola, beyond declaring the public holiday, I’m hoping that they will also be able to unite Nigeria.

Herdsman behead wife in Ekiti

The police in Ekiti State have confirmed the alleged beheading of a lady in Ilasa Ekiti, Ekiti East Local Government Area of the state on Wednesday, by a herdsman believed to be the deceased’s husband.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, Caleb Ikechukwu who confirmed the killing, said the suspect had been arrested while investigations into the incident had commenced.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that tragedy struck as the young herdsman (name withheld) allegedly cut off the head of the lady at a stream side in Ilasa Ekiti.

The victim, who is also of the same ethnic group with the suspected assailant, was allegedly attacked beside the stream where she had gone to fetch water with her younger sister.

The young man was said to have ambushed her and brought down her head while she bent to collect some water from the stream, and took to his heals immediately.
He was arrested following the information provided by the younger sister of the deceased who witnessed the incident.

The victim was said to have been betrothed to the herdsman while she was a teenager, in line with their customs and tradition.
NAN further gathered that trouble started last month when the suspect requested the lady to spend the Eld-el-Fitr holiday with him, but the family of the deceased failed to release her.
The lady was said to have observed that the suspect was a drunkard and drug addict and had avoided him for necessary marriage arrangements.

The suspect, NAN gathered, was angered, having assumed that the family of the deceased had breached the marriage contract.
Some relatives of the deceased who did not want their names mentioned expressed sadness over the incident.
The traditional rulers of the community, Oba Ajayi Omolagba, condemned the incident and said that the community had been in shock since the strange occurrence.

The Alasa of Ilasa said that the town had summoned the two families as well as their landlords to a meeting where resolutions were reached on how to forestall future occurrence.
Oba Omolagba noted that the community would also make necessary appeasement to God as such incident was strange and a taboo in the land.

Why smart phone market is on decline in Nigeria, others

Latest insight from the International Data Corporation (IDC), has revealed that shipment of smartphone in Nigeria, and other parts of Africa dropped by 7.1 per cent in the first quarter (Q1) 2019, quarter on quarter (QoQ), to 21.5 million.

The global technology research and consulting firm’s recently published Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker showed the continent’s two biggest markets – Nigeria and South Africa – underperformed due to seasonal effects, posting QoQ declines of 14.7 per cent, and 23.4 per cent, respectively.

A research analyst at IDC, Arnold Ponela, said while Africa’s smartphone market experienced a QoQ decline, shipments actually increased 5.6 per cent when viewed year on year (YoY).

Ponela said the YoY increase indicates that the market is showing some signs of improvement, while the QoQ decline can be attributed to the traditionally weaker performance of Q1 versus the seasonal buoyancy of Q4, in addition to disappointing results in some large markets.

According to IDC, Nigeria saw smartphone shipments of 2.3 million units in Q1 2019, down 11.9 per cent YoY.

“The country’s poor performance can be attributed to a three-week embargo on shipments of Chinese mobile phone brands into the country, which negatively affected major market players.

“Economic activity is usually slow in the first quarter and in Q1 2019 it was further exacerbated by widespread insecurity and the one-week postponement of the general election”, the IDC stated.

South Africa’s overall mobile phone market contracted 4.0 per cent YoY in Q1 2019 to total 4.7 million units. “The decline can be attributed to seasonal factors, with Q1 traditionally being the slowest quarter of the year,” said Ponela, adding, “there was also an issue with overstocking in the channel because of the buoyant volumes seen during Q4, traditionally the strongest, when demand is stirred by Black Friday and the Christmas season.”

IDC noted that the Africa’s smartphone market continues to be spurred by the growing popularity of low-end to mid-range devices.

Transsion brands (Tecno and Itel) top these segments and remain the continent’s leaders in terms of overall smartphone shipments, together accounting 33.1 per cent of the market’s volume in Q1 2019. Samsung followed in second place with 24.5 per cent unit share. Huawei ranked third with a unit share of 11.8 per cent.

“With most of the continent’s markets experiencing numerous economic challenges, it is clear that cheaper phones offering better value will increasingly dominate the market,” Ponela stated.

In the feature phone space, shipments were down 5.8 per cent QoQ and 0.3 per cent YoY in Q1 2019, with shipments totaling 31.6 million units.

Feature phones still constitute a significant 59.9 per cent share of the total mobile phone market due to their relative affordability and durability, and they continue to play an important role in connecting even more Africans to the internet. Transsion brands Tecno and Itel continue to dominate the feature phone landscape with a combined unit share of 59.7 per cent, followed in third place by HMD with 9.2 per cent share.

Looking ahead, IDC expects Africa’s overall mobile phone market to total 50.9 million units in Q2 2019, reflecting a YoY decline of 5.3 per cent caused by sharp downturns in most countries.

According to a research manager at IDC, Ramazan Yavuz, “Africa is susceptible to challenging local macroeconomic environments as well as to the global tensions surrounding international trade. Another factor is the rise of protectionist measures aimed at controlling smartphone shipments in multiple countries, which causes sudden short-term swings in the market’s performance.”

IDC’s research showed that 4G LTE networks are continuing to spread their reach in Africa, with shipments of 4G LTE devices increasing 15.1 per cent YoY in Q1 2019 to constitute 67.1 per cent of the smartphone market.

“A drop in prices for entry-level 4G phones and discounted tariff and data plans on the operator side are driving this growth. However, despite the rapid penetration of 4G handsets, 2G and 3G mobile devices remain resilient as an economical option for price sensitive consumers,” Yavuz stated.

FG May Lift Land Border Vehicle Importation Ban — Customs Boss
User Avatar Forum: Market Place
Posted by: Edoman - 06-13-2019, 09:52 AM - No Replies

The Federal Government may relax the ban on importation of vehicles through the land border.

The government had in January 2017 ordered a ban on importation of vehicles through the land borders.

The restriction on the importation of vehicles followed that of rice, whose imports through the land borders had been banned since April 2016.

But the government may reconsider its decision after the successful implementation of a new initiative by the Nigeria Customs Service and the Customs Service of the Republic of Benin to automate and network all electronic information about incoming cargoes through the border.

The Comptroller General, NCS, Col Hameed Ali (retd.), who was represented by the Assistant Comptroller, Information and Communication Technology, Benjamin Aber, at a stakeholders’ meeting on the new initiative, expressed confidence that with a successful implementation of the bilateral electronic connectivity programme between Nigeria and Republic of Benin, the Federal Government might lift the ban on items coming through the land border.

Ali said the decision of the government to shut down importation of vehicles through the border was because the government did not have a reliable system that would assist in controlling importation.

With declarations made for imports transiting from either of the countries electronically shared, the process of import and export would be done in a transparent manner and the government seeing such transparency would be convinced to relax its stance on land border importation.

He said “Vehicles were formerly being imported through the Seme border, but suddenly it was banned because the pressure of enforcement of anti-smuggling for vehicles and claiming of lives and revenue were becoming too alarming, so the government had to restrict the importation through Nigerian ports.

“When vehicles came through the land border, we did not have a record of how the imported cars came here and fake documentation became a common phenomenon. The ban was just a control measure against the practice.”

He added, “By the time we successfully deploy this reliable, transparent and predictable programme that would assist government agencies, not only Customs, to control and regulate the importation of vehicles, the government may decide to relax such restrictions.”

Ali said the establishment of the automated platform and bilateral connectivity meant that any truck that left the Republic of Benin, the information would already be remotely sent in English to Nigeria Customs Service system.

He also gave the assurance that illegal checkpoints mounted by Customs officers and other security agencies along the border corridors would disappear automatically.

“The roads also have to be fixed, because we cannot automate clearing of goods between the Customs and at the end, the stakeholders would be complaining,” he pointed out.

He said the new platform would be deployed by June 20.

CBN Signals End To Official Rate Regime For Naira

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) may soon allow the naira to freely find its value, with a possible depreciation on the official rate, usually pegged at about N305/$, an update on its website has indicated.
The development is signaling an end to the most criticised foreign exchange rate window, which has been used mostly for government’s critical businesses that affect the public, particularly the importation of petroleum products.

If the move sees light of day, it will mean that the value of the naira at the official window is depreciated with its concomitant closure of the peg.

Yesterday, the apex bank, as opposed to the usual publication of the fixed exchange rate, opted to publish that “the rate will be market-determined.”

According to a report, the President of Shippers Association of Lagos State, Jonathan Nicol, said the Nigeria Customs Service had allegedly directed importers to pay for duties at the rate of N326 per dollar against the official rate of N306, citing an order from the CBN.

Also yesterday, the interbank rate depreciated by 0.2 per cent to N360.43 per dollar at the close of trading, while the parallel market remained steady at N360 per dollar.

A move toward a market-determined exchange rate would be welcomed by investors, who have long accused government of some level of capital controls and bemoaned multiple exchange rates.

The Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian Investment Promotion Council, Yewande Sadiku, was quoted as saying the apex bank was in talks with other agencies to move to a single rate for the nation’s currency.

For an economic analyst at Ecobank, Kunle Ezun, “putting that on the website means the central bank is gradually moving towards a single exchange-rate window. It is making the exchange rate more liquid to attract more inflows.”

61 Percent Of Americans Oppose Impeaching Trump

Nearly 70 percent of American voters believe a sitting president should be able to be charged criminally, but 61 percent oppose Congress beginning the process to impeach President Trump, a new survey released Wednesday found, According to Nypost.com.

The Quinnipiac University Poll showed 69 percent of voters overall agree that the occupant of the White House should be subject to criminal charges, while 24 percent said the president shouldn’t be charged until after leaving office.

Broken down by political party, Republicans by 52-35 percent and Democrats by 83-12 percent say a sitting president should be charged, the poll said.

The number is 68 – 26 percent among independent voters.

Asked whether Trump committed crimes before he took office, voters agree by a 57 – 29 percent margin but they are divided 45 – 45 percent whether he committed crimes while in the White House.

And a majority – 55 – 35 percent – believe that special counsel Robert Mueller’s report did not clear Trump of any wrongdoing.

Still, voters by 61 – 33 percent believe Congress should not try to impeach the president and 50 – 44 percent say he doesn’t deserve to be impeached.

Democrats and black voters support impeachment, the only ones in favor among the voters listed by party, gender, education, age and racial group, the poll showed.

But voters are divided – 48 percent say yes and 49 percent say no – over whether Congress should further investigate Trump to determine bringing impeachment charges.

“Complete exoneration??? Case closed??? ‘Hold on, Mr. President,’ most American voters say,” said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac Poll. “Even though questions clearly linger on the true thrust of special counsel Robert
Mueller’s report, an even larger majority says impeachment is just not the way to go.”

Neither party gets a pass on how they’re handling impeachment.

Voters by 64 – 25 disapprove of Democrats and 59 – 24 percent dislike the way Republicans are dealing with the impeachment issue.

The poll surveyed 1,214 voters nationwide between June 6 and June 10. It has a plus/minus 3.5 percentage point margin of error.

Nigeria Earns N85 Trillion From Crude Oil Export In 5 Years

The Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) has revealed that Nigeria earned a total of $236.15bn, which translates to N84.96 trillion from petroleum exports over the last five years

In specific values, OPEC, in its 2019 Annual Statistical Bulletin, put exports at $75.196bn in 2014; $41.168bn in 2015; $27.295bn in 2016; $37.983bn in 2017, and $54.513bn in 2018.

In 2018, the value of the country’s petroleum exports was the sixth biggest in the 14-member group, behind Saudi Arabia’s $194.358bn, UAE’s $74.94bn, Iraq’s $68.192bn, Iran’s $60.198bn and Kuwait’s $58.393bn.

It said, “The population of OPEC member countries increased by almost 11 million last year, with Nigeria, Iraq and Angola adding 5.3 million, one million, 0.52 million inhabitants, respectively, thus bringing the OPEC MCs’ share of global population to 6.64 per cent (up from 6.57 per cent in 2017).

It said, “The share of OPEC MCs petroleum export revenues to GDP has decreased by around six percentage points over the last five years. Declines have been registered in all OPEC MCs, as local governments commissioned a number of initiatives and programmes to promote the development of high value-added non-oil industries, including manufacturing and services.”
“Over the last four years (2015–18), this ratio has been between 78 per cent and 85 per cent, which is between 20 and 15 percentage points higher, as against the same ratio in years of comparable oil prices (2005, 2006, 2007 and 2009),” it added.

The year 2018 was said to have seen substantial global supply growth as total oil liquids production increased significantly by 2.60 million barrels per day, outpacing oil demand growth by more than one million bpd in 2018.

“The increase was once more driven by outstanding production gains in North America, particularly in the United States. In contrast, crude oil production from OPEC member countries, as well as from other non-OPEC countries, showed declines,” the group said.

The report also noted that crude oil production showed a drop of around 400,000 bpd last year, compared to 2017.

“With regard to countries with increasing oil production in 2018, output expansions were clearly driven by North America, notably by the United States. Oil supply in the US increased by around 2.3m bpd in the year 2018, representing almost 80 per cent of total non-OPEC supply growth,” OPEC said.

RHAPSODY OF REALITIES

THURSDAY, 13TH JUNE.

TWO ASPECTS OF THE CHRIST-LIFE

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life (John 3:16)

There’re two aspects of the Christ-life: the legal and the vital aspects. These two aspects are illustrated in our theme verse. The legal aspect refers to all that we are, all that we have, all that we can do, and our position, rank and authority as granted us in Christ.

We read that God gave His Son and says whosoever believes in Him should not perish. That’s a legal declaration. Then, the verse concludes by stating what you would have upon believing in Him: “everlasting life.” To have everlasting life is the second part, which is the vital aspect of the Christ-life.

The vital aspect of the Christ-life refers to all that the Holy Spirit has done or is doing in your spirit, soul and body through the Word, developing you after the image of Christ and the Father. This vital aspect is activated by your confession. Meaning, it only works when you affirm it.

The legal aspect, on the other hand, gives you authority. You acknowledge the Word and act accordingly, because it’s about being informed of what belongs to you, who you are, and your inheritance in Christ.

Now, without an understanding of these two aspects, there can be a mix-up, just as many have done. They haven’t been able to differentiate between the legal and the vital, and so, they’re unable to apply the Word rightly.

For example, divine health belongs to you; it’s not something to struggle for in prayer, trying to “claim.” It’s legally yours now; it’s not with God or the devil. However, you make it vitally yours through your confession of the Word. Praise God!

CONFESSION

Dear Father, I take advantage of all that you’ve done for me as a result of the vicarious death of Jesus, and I acknowledge the benefits of His glorious resurrection in my life and all that it means to me. I’m healthy, vibrant, prosperous and victorious every day, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

KINDLY SAY THESE WORDS OUT LOUD

Dear Father, thank You for the cleansing power of Your Word, which purifies my heart from all unrighteousness. My thoughts today, are pure, just, lovely, and excellent. As Your Spirit unveils the mysteries of Your Word to me, my thoughts are adjusted to see things only
in that perspective. I thank You for the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit in me, and the fulfilment of His glorious ministry in my life.

I have wisdom to do Your will, and fulfil Your destiny for me today, because I am counselled from within! I know what to do, when to do what to do, and how to do what to do, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
