Ekiti First Lady, Bisi Adeleye-Fayemi denies ordering policemen to shoot FUOYE students

The First Lady of Ekiti State, Bisi Adeleye-Fayemi has denied instructing policemen attached to her convoy to shoot protesting students of Federal University Oye Ekiti (FUOYE) on Tuesday September 10. 

In her statement which countered the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) claim of her ordering her security detail to shoot the students leading to the death of at least two, Mrs Fayemi said the protest was hijacked by hoodlums who vandalised her convoy as well as vehicles of her guests during an empowerment programme she embarked on in local governments across the state. 

She said “ Yesterday, September 10th 2019, there was a crisis at Oye town in Oye Local Government, Ekiti State while I was on an empowerment and advocacy tour to engage with women across the State. The tour commenced on Monday September 9th, with visits to two local governments which were hugely successful and peaceful.
“On September 10th, we were billed to visit three local governments – Moba, Ilejemeje and Oye. The first two stops were just like the ones before – peaceful with no incident.
“While we were at Ilejemeje, we received a call from our advance security team that students of the Federal University of Oye (FUOYE) were protesting a lack of electricity in Oye town. We were told that more information would be provided on the situation. Shortly after we received word that the students had dispersed and the coast was clear for my visit.
“When my convoy got to the Oye-Isan junction, we were met by a convoy of excited Okada riders who led us into Oye town. We made a stop at the primary healthcare center along the road for me to present delivery kits to pregnant women.
“There was no sign of any trouble. We proceeded to the venue of my town hall meeting at the civic center with women in Oye Local Government.
“The atmosphere was very peaceful, the women were singing and dancing and there was nothing to indicate that anything was amiss. I stopped at the tent erected for the mobile health clinic in front of the civic center to greet the elderly patients who were being attended to, and I also went to greet the beneficiaries of the Food Bank for the elderly project (Ounje Arugbo), who were assembled under another tent. I then proceeded into the hall for the program.
“Half-way through our event, there was a disturbance outside. The FUOYE students (and possibly infiltrated by local thugs) had re-grouped and were trying to get into the venue.
“The security officers prevented this from happening. We finished our program, and by the time we got outside, we found that vehicles from my convoy and those of my guests that were parked outside the venue had been vandalised.
“As we were driving out of Oye town, we encountered at least two road blocks that the students had mounted to prevent the movement of vehicles. I could see students/thugs throwing stones and large sticks at us as we drove by.
“However, the casualties that were recorded did not take place while I was there. There are eye-witnesses, photographs and video footage to confirm this.”
She added: “There are reports circulating that the crisis occurred because I refused to address the protesting students. This is totally false.
“I did not encounter any group of students when I got to Oye town. They had dispersed before my arrival, and when they regrouped I was inside the venue.
“It is possible, as I stated earlier, that the group that came to the venue trying to gain access with sticks and stones in hand might have included local hoodlums, but there was no way of telling the difference.
“I am scandalized and shocked beyond words to hear that I instructed security officers to shoot at students.
“Yesterday morning, as I was driving past my office in Ado-Ekiti, a group of women were gathered there to protest.
“They are members of a Female Sweepers Association, who were protesting a cut in their monthly salary by the previous administration. They wanted me to help them.
“They were very polite and pleasant. I listened to them and promised to pass on their message to the appropriate authorities.
“These two protests happened on the same day. If I had met a group of protesting students, as a social justice activist myself, I would have listened to their complaints and addressed them. I firmly believe in citizens’ rights to protest on issues of concern.
“I am deeply saddened that at least one fatality has been recorded. As a mother my heart bleeds.
“All these students are my children, and no mother prays to weep over their offspring.
“I extend my sincere condolences to the family concerned, and I wish those who are still receiving treatment a speedy recovery.
“The Obirinkete Tour has been suspended pending a review of what transpired yesterday. I thank friends and all members of the public who have expressed concern over this. God bless you all.”

Two yahoo boys arrested in Ibadan, expensive cars and phones recovered

Two suspected internet fraudsters popularly known as yahoo boys, have been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). 

The suspects identified as Akeju Crown Babatunde, 31, and Agbanah Toba, 35, were arrested over their alleged involvement in internet fraud. The anti-graft was able to establish enough ground for prosecuting the suspects after retrieving data and documents from them. 

The statement reads in part; 

Akeju, for instance, was found of mining information from online sites, and was in possession of personal information and addresses of several Americans who have fallen victim to his fraudulent acts at different times.
The suspect usually operated with two email accounts – one personal and one other supposedly official – to penetrate his victims and dispossess them of their hard-earned money.
EFCC’s investigations also established Akeju’s deployment of fake identity to engage foreigners in romantic affairs with the intention to defraud them.
Findings revealed various lodgments from his foreign victims into his Nigerian bank accounts.
Agbanah’s case is not too different. He had admitted in his confessional statement with the Commission to be falsely representing himself as one Chris Dan, a 40-year-old Briton, working with the United Nations.
He confessed to have used the white man’s picture to lure his victims into romantic relationships and thereafter solicit for money from them allegedly to enable him to pay for his flight ticket to pay them scheduled visits. After much familiarization, he would then device other tricks to swindle them the more.
The two suspects are still helping the Commission with relevant information for further investigations into activities of their other partners.
At the point of his arrest, the EFCC recovered one iPhone xmax and one Toyota Venza from Akeju, while Agbanah was in possession of one Toyota Venza, one Toyota Camry, two Macbook, one Apple Ipad, one iPhone Xmax, one iPhone 5, one Infinix phone, two hard drives and one HP printer.

I wasn’t worried all along — President Buhari reacts to tribunal verdict

President Buhari has reacted to the Presidential election tribunal's judgement which upheld his victory in the February 2019 Presidential election. 

The President said he was not worried about the outcome of the court process because he knew Nigerians elected him for a second term in office.

“Good conscience fears no evil report. I was unperturbed all along, because I knew Nigerians freely gave us the mandate. We are now vindicated,” Femi Adesina, presidential spokesman, quoted Buhari to have said.

Commending the judiciary for not “dispensing justice without fear or favour", President Buhari also dedicated his victory at the tribunal to God and Nigerians. 

The statement reads in full "President Muhammadu Buhari says the ruling of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal on the February 23, 2019 poll, is victory for Nigerians who trooped out to overwhelmingly elect him for a second term in office.
“Good conscience fears no evil report. I was unperturbed all along, because I knew Nigerians freely gave us the mandate. We are now vindicated,” the President declares.
He dedicates the victory to God, and to Nigerians, while also commending the judiciary for “dispensing justice without fear or favour.”
President Buhari extends a hand of fellowship to those who had felt aggrieved at the outcome of the election, and went to court, noting that it was within their democratic rights.
He notes, however, that with the pronouncement of the judiciary, “it is time for the country to move forward as one cohesive body, putting behind us all bickering and potential distractions over an election in which Nigerians spoke clearly and resoundingly.”

Gunmen kidnap Kogi Miners’ chairman

Gunmen have abducted the chairman of Kogi State Miners Association, Yunusa Oruma, from his residence at Ankpa LGA of the state.
 
A brother of the victim, Prince Oruma told Daily Trust on Wednesday that his brother was relaxing in his house when gunmen numbering eight invaded the place at about 8pm on Sunday and began shooting sporadically.
 
He said the gunmen in the process seized his brother and drove away with him, adding that no information had been heard since the incident.
 
He said the incident has been reported to the police and other security agencies in Ankpa, appealing for concerted efforts to secure release of the victim.
 
Spokesperson for the Kogi Command, William Aya, who confirmed the incident, said that efforts were ongoing by its men to rescue the victim.

The body of an unidentified man was discovered in a bush along Daudu to Tse-Nyikwagh  road in Benue State on Monday night, September 9. 
 
From the gash on his head, he is suspected to have been murdered.

Knife used to stab Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro to become museum exhibit - Court rules

The knife used to stab Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro during his 2018 election campaign is to be put on display at a police museum due to its "historical value", a court ruled.
 
The court in the southern state of Minas Gerais ordered the knife to be given to the National Police Academy museum in Brasilia, in response to a request by federal police.
 
"There are no doubts about the relevant historical value of the knife used in the attack against the president," judge Bruno Savino said in his ruling. The judgement also handed "swabs impregnated with biological samples" from both Bolsonaro and his attacker to the museum.  
 
The same judge in June ordered Adelio Bispo de Oliveira, the man who stabbed the president during a campaign rally on September 6 last year to be held indefinitely in a prison mental facility.

It’s our heavenly Father’s desire that everyone hear the Gospel of the Lord Jesus and have the opportunity to believe in His Name. But it’s our responsibility to make it happen.

First feelers from the tribunal in Abuja gave clear indications that the President would retain his seat and this improved the level of confidence of investors, triggering buying pressure at the market.

Though the final judgement did not come before the close of transactions at the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), earlier rulings dismissing some of the appeals of Mr Atiku on the legitimacy of Mr Buhari and others brought fresh air to the stock market.

At the end of the day, the All-Share Index (ASI) increased by 105.95 points to settle at 27,153.53 basis points from 27,047.58 basis points in the last session, while the market capitalization appreciated by N51.6 billion to finish at N13.210 trillion against N13.158 trillion on Tuesday.

But Business Post observed that despite the market closing bullish yesterday, the volume, value and number of deals executed depreciated by 41.92 percent, 70.18 percent and 5.70 percent respectively.

A total of 211.5 million shares worth N1.5 billion were exchanged by investors in 4,365 deals in the mid-week session compared with the 364.2 million equities valued at N4.9 billion transacted in 4,629 deals in the previous trading session.

Courtville recorded the highest volume of sales yesterday, closing with a turnover of 35.2 million units of its shares traded at N7.7 million.

It was followed by Sterling Bank, which traded 34.7 million shares worth N78.1 million, and Access Bank, which transacted 30 million equities valued at N208.4 million.

Furthermore, Transcorp exchanged 15.9 million units of its stocks worth N16.1 million during the trading day, while UBA sold 12.5 million shares worth N77.5 million.

An analysis of the price movement chart showed that yesterday, Nestle Nigeria topped the gainers’ table after a price appreciation of N40 to close at N1120 per unit.

Seplat trailed with a price growth of N24 to finish at N450 per share, CCNN gained 25 kobo to settle at N16.50k per share, May & Baker improved its share value by 19 kobo to end at N2.09k per unit, while FCMB garnered 9 kobo to close at N1.64k each.

At the other side, Guinness Nigeria closed as the day’s heaviest price loser after depreciating by 30 kobo to trade at N37 per share, while Stanbic IBTC went down by 25 kobo to finish at N35.75k per share.

Flour Mills also declined by 25 kobo to close at N13.25k per share, Dangote Flour shed 15 kobo to settle at N22.10k per unit, while UAC Nigeria depleted by 15 kobo to trade at N6.05k per share.

For the sectoral performance, only the insurance sector closed negative on Wednesday after going down by 1.25 percent.

The energy sector was the day’s highest gainer with 2.82 percent growth, the consumer goods index appreciated by 1.60 percent, banking stocks rose by 0.35 percent, while industrial sector appreciated by 0.16 percent.

Enugu State Governor, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, on Wednesday, unveiled to newsmen in Enugu, the new vehicles purchased by his administration to enhance security operations at the community level.

Gov. Ugwuanyi, who took the journalists round the premises of the Government House to show them the vehicles, used the opportunity to brief them on the efforts of his administration to decisively tackle the recent security challenges in the state.

The vehicles include 100 pieces of Innoson Hilux vans for use by the Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police Force and Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps, among others, for security operations.

The remaining 260 vehicles, which were approved during the governor’s recent security meeting with all the members of the State Assembly, Local Government Council Chairmen, the Director of State Services (DSS) and the Security Chiefs of DSS in the council areas, will be distributed to the 260 electoral wards in the state.

The security vehicles will be deployed to provide services for community policing, Vigilante/Neighborhood Watch and Forest Guard operations.

The governor disclosed that the state government intends to engage the State Assembly and partner Ndi Enugu, home and abroad, to set up a Security Trust Fund that will ensure efficient security operations in the state.

He further disclosed that the state government will also purchase motorcycles as well as bicycles, adding that it equally intends to partner churches and other organizations for intelligence gathering, among other strategies.

Two yahoo boys arrested in Ibadan, expensive cars and phones recovered






Two suspected internet fraudsters popularly known as yahoo boys, have been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). 
 
The suspects identified as Akeju Crown Babatunde, 31, and Agbanah Toba, 35, were arrested over their alleged involvement in internet fraud. The anti-graft was able to establish enough ground for prosecuting the suspects after retrieving data and documents from them. 
 
The statement reads in part; 
 

Quote:Akeju, for instance, was found of mining information from online sites, and was in possession of personal information and addresses of several Americans who have fallen victim to his fraudulent acts at different times.
The suspect usually operated with two email accounts – one personal and one other supposedly official – to penetrate his victims and dispossess them of their hard-earned money.
EFCC’s investigations also established Akeju’s deployment of fake identity to engage foreigners in romantic affairs with the intention to defraud them.
Findings revealed various lodgments from his foreign victims into his Nigerian bank accounts.
Agbanah’s case is not too different. He had admitted in his confessional statement with the Commission to be falsely representing himself as one Chris Dan, a 40-year-old Briton, working with the United Nations.
He confessed to have used the white man’s picture to lure his victims into romantic relationships and thereafter solicit for money from them allegedly to enable him to pay for his flight ticket to pay them scheduled visits. After much familiarization, he would then device other tricks to swindle them the more.
The two suspects are still helping the Commission with relevant information for further investigations into activities of their other partners.
At the point of his arrest, the EFCC recovered one iPhone xmax and one Toyota Venza from Akeju, while Agbanah was in possession of one Toyota Venza, one Toyota Camry, two Macbook, one Apple Ipad, one iPhone Xmax, one iPhone 5, one Infinix phone, two hard drives and one HP printer.

Atiku and PDP reject verdict of tribunal, head to Supreme Court






Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the People's Democratic Party have rejected the judgement of the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal which upheld the election of Muhammadu Buhari as the President of Nigeria in the February 23, 2019 poll.

 
The Presidential tribunal on Wednesday September 11, dismissed the petition of Atiku Abubakar and the PDP, saying they did not prove them beyond a reasonable doubt.
 
Reacting to the court judgement, Mike Ozekhome who is one of the lawyers representing the petitioners, said they would “challenge the ‘misevaluation’ of critical evidence in the judgement.”
 

Quote:“That we’re appealing to the Supreme Court is as certain as death,” the Senior Advocate of Nigeria said.

Quote:“The PDP finds as bewildering that a court of law could validate a clear case of perjury and declaration of false information in a sworn affidavit, as firmly established against President Muhammadu Buhari, even in the face of incontrovertible evidence.
“The party is also rudely shocked that the Court took over the roles of the respondents’ lawyers who clearly abandoned their pleadings by refusing to call evidence in defense of the petition.
“The court raked up all manner of excuses to make up for the yawning gaps occasioned by the total absence of any evidence from the respondents.
“Nigerians and the international community watched in utter disbelief when the tribunal ruled that one need not provide a copy or certified true copy of educational certificate such individual claimed to possess, contrary to established proof of claims of certification.
“The party notes as strange that the court even went ahead to provide rationalizations in favour of President Buhari, even when all hard facts before it shows that he did not possess the claimed educational certificate and that the Army was not in possession of his WAEC certificate as claimed in the affidavit he deposed to in his Presidential nomination form.
“The PDP also described as shocking that the court approved the flawed declaration of President Buhari as the winner of the election despite evidence to show the perpetration of illegalities, manipulations, alterations and subtraction of valid votes freely given to Atiku Abubakar by Nigerians.
“Indeed, the pervading melancholic atmosphere across our nation since the verdict is a direct indication that the judgement has not fulfilled the desires and expectations of Nigerians.
“The PDP however encouraged Nigerians to remain calm and not to lose hope or surrender to despondency or self-help, as our lawyers are upbeat in obtaining justice at the Supreme Court,” the opposition party said.

Media Mogul, Dele Momodu has reacted to the Presidential Election Tribunal judgment affirming President Buhari as the legitimate winner of the February 2019 elections.

The Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Abuja, on Wednesday, dismissed the petition of Atiku Abubakar challenging President Muhammadu Buhari’s re-election, in its entirety, Igbere TV reports.

Igbere TV reports that the five-man panel of justices led by Justice Mohammed Garba, held that the petitioners (Atiku, PDP) failed to “evidently prove” their case beyond “reasonable doubt.”

The tribunal insisted that the allegations levelled under issues 4 and 5 (above) were criminal in nature that must be proved beyond reasonable doubt.

The tribunal also said the petitioners failed to discharge the burden of proof that Buhari was not elected by a majority of lawful votes.

Igbere TV reports that three members of the five-man panel of justices agreed with the lead judge (Mohammed Garba) in his ruling.

The Tribunal, therefore, stroke out the entire petition of Atiku and the PDP against Buhari and the APC, for lacking merit, and failure to evidently prove their case beyond reasonable doubt.

Reacting to the development, Dele Momodu said; “Experience is the best teacher... Our country is too complex and complicated... If MKO ABIOLA could be turned from the winner to a prisoner, nothing can shock me again...”

A week after The PUNCH’s investigation into the non-existent doctorate of the acting Director General of the Federal Institute of Industrial Research, Oshodi, Chima Igwe, the government has refused to take action.

The Ministry of Science and Technology had stated that it could not do anything because Igwe’s academic records were with FIIRO.

The ministry had also shifted responsibility to the institute’s governing board and a former director general, Prof. Gloria Elemo.

It also claimed not to be aware of any investigation into the matter.

However, the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission has promised to make public its findings on the matter.

Our correspondent had reported that Igwe joined FIIRO in 1991 and rose through the ranks.

However, a policy in the institution made it impossible for anyone without a PhD to be promoted to the senior cadre.

Igwe then claimed that he completed his doctorate at the Abomey-Calavi University, Benin Republic, in 2001.

He was reportedly promoted several times based on the claim, despite having only an attestation letter as evidence.

The matter became contentious when there was a need to appoint a new head for the agency earlier this year.

The board of governors checked the files of senior officers and discovered that 57-year-old Igwe, who was the most senior, did not have a certificate to back his PhD claim.

After several failed ultimatums for the officer to bring the certificate, the board recommended to the ministry that the next most senior officer be appointed into the position.

The PhD case was said to have been taken up by the ICPC.

The Dr Ogbonnaya Onu-led Ministry of Science and Technology, however, rejected the recommendation of the board and insisted that Igwe be appointed.

The FIIRO spokesperson, Chris Olumuyiwa, while acknowledging that PhD was a basis for promotion to senior positions in the institute, maintained that Igwe’s doctorate was not in doubt.

The conundrum around the PhD remained unresolved until The PUNCH visited Benin Republic, where Igwe claimed to have bagged the degree.

The Deputy Director, School of Postgraduate Studies, Abomey-Calavi University, Prof. Valentin Wotto, told our correspondent that Igwe had yet to complete the degree.

Wotto added that Igwe must re-register to continue his studies and complete his academic programme before getting his PhD.

The ICPC, which has been investigating the case for many months, promised to reveal its findings to the public.

The spokesperson for the agency, Mrs Rasheedat Okoduwa, said in a text message, “I learnt that our investigation into the matter is ongoing. The outcome will be made public when the processes are concluded.”

Nigerians, who read the report, commended The PUNCH for the good job, adding that what took the ICPC a long time to do, the newspaper did within a short while.

Many also called for Igwe’s prosecution.

“Too many people out there occupying high positions of authority, while there are millions of eligible Nigerians in various fields looking for jobs. No wonder, nothing is working. It is not only the man that should be prosecuted, but many that have been incompetent should also give way as collateral – let the right people in,” a reader, de_Wale, wrote.

Another reader, with the alias, government, said Igwe should be made to refund the salary he took with the supposed certificate.

“The man should be asked to refund all the salaries he used his adulterated PhD to obtain. He should also be demoted,” he wrote.

“The PUNCH did a good job here; professional journalism despite the language barrier. No one can accuse this newspaper of shoddy journalism. Excellent! Let’s have Igwe’s reaction when confronted with the facts from the Republic of Benin,” Daoud Akano stated.

Some readers on Twitter also queried the reaction of the Ministry of Science and Technology that it could not do anything about the scandal.

The Presidential Election Petition Tribunal has upheld argument by President Buhari that it lacked the jurisdiction to entertain allegation of corrupt practices and voters’ inducement raised against Vice President Yemi Osinbajo in the petition by Atiku Abubakar and the PDP.  
 
In its 5th ruling of the day, the court equally upheld the argument by Buhari’s legal team, led by Wole Olanipekun (SAN) that it was wrong for the petitioners to raise such grievous allegation against Osinbajo without joining him as a party in the petition to enable him defend himself against the allegation.  
 
The petitioners had, in the petition, alleged that Osinbajo engaged in voters inducement by spending funds not appropriated for by the National Assembly or approved, in the pretext of Trader Moni and other social intervention programmes of the government.
 
In its ruling, the court said the non-joinder of persons against whom grievous criminal allegations were made in the petition, including Osinbajo, is a denial of their rights to fair hearing. The court rejected the petitioners’ claim that the persons against whom the allegations were made are agents of the respondents, particularly 2nd and 3rd respondents (Buhari and APC) and held that there is no vicarious liability in criminal law, noting that anyone, who violates the law should carry his/her cross, according to the Nation.  
 
The court proceeded to strike out, from the petition, paragraphs containing the said offending criminal allegations, particularly paragraphs 368, 369, 370, 371, 372 containing the petitioners’ allegations of corrupt practices against Osinbajo, in which they accused him of allegedly inducing voters with government funds, not appropriated or approved.

11 people arrested as NDLEA destroys two hectares of cannabis farms in Edo State






The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Edo Command says it has uncovered and destroyed two hectares of cannabis farms in the state.
 
Buba Wakawa, State Commander of the Agency disclosed that the farms located in Ovia North East and Etsako West Local Government areas were estimated to yield 248,088kg of cannabis plants.  
 
He also said that the command had seized 452.36kg of substance suspected to be cannabis as well as Tramadol and Diazepam tablets. According to him, the achievements were recorded in the last one month.

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) on Tuesday September 10, hailed the Nigerian government's stance on sex marriage which they described as a step in the right direction.
 
The President of the Christian group Dr. Samson Ayokunle, in a statement released on his behalf by his spokesperson Pastor Adebayo Oladeji, stated that same sex marriage or homosexuality, transgender, sodomy and other related practices are an abomination before God and also alien to our culture as a people.

A cashier with a photographic memory has been arrested for memorizing 1,300 credit cards and going on a shopping spree.
 
Yusuke Taniguchi, 34, who was recently arrested, committed the crime while he was working at a mall in Koto City in Tokyo. 
 
Japan Today reports that Taniguchi used the credit card information to finance his basic living expenses and purchase luxury items online.
 
Police were tipped off after Taniguchi purchased an expensive pair of shoulder bags totaling over $2,500, and had the bags delivered to his apartment.
 
According to Police, whenever a customer would pay by credit card, the suspect allegedly memorized their 16-digit-number, name, expiry date, and security code, all in the time it took to process their purchase.
 
During a search at his apartment , Police said they found a notebook containing the hundreds of names and numbers and are currently linking them to past incidents to determine the scope of his alleged crimes.
 
It was also reported that Mr. Yusuke was using an apparent eidetic memory often called a “photographic memory” to memorize people's information on their credit cards.

A woman has been arrested for tying up her husband and chopping off his penis.
 
The victim, 61-year-old James Frabutt told authorities that his wife Victoria Thomas Frabutt, 56, restrained him, pulled out a knife and severed his manhood during the alleged incident on Tuesday, September 8. 
 
Chief Detective Jason Wank said officers from the Carteret County Sheriff’s Office responded to a house on Murdoch Road in Newport just before 4am. They transported the victim from the home to the Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.
 
Major Wank said the body part was successfully located and penis was immediately put on ice and transported to medical personnel.
 
The motive behind the castration is yet unknown as well as James Frabutt’s condition.
 
His wife, Victoria was taken into custody on Tuesday and booked around 10.45am for malicious castration and kidnapping.
 
She is currently held in Carteret County Jail under a $100,000 bond and her first court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday, September 9.

The Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal has just dismissed an application by Atiku and PDP, challenging President Muhammadu Buhari’s academic qualifications, Igbere TV reports.

President Muhammadu Buhari, has vowed to bring crude oil theft to its kneels by looking at practical solutions to the menace.
The President gave the assurance at the ongoing 24th World Energy Congress (WEC) in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates on Tuesday.
Buhari’s pledge may not be unconnected with the 77 per cent rise in oil pipeline vandalism as contained in the June monthly report of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) with 106 pipeline breaches in June, up from just 60 in May.
Represented by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Chief Timipreye Sylva, Buhari said the Federal Government would deliver Final Investment Decisions (FIDs) on at least four key projects within the nation’s oil and gas industry by the end of last quarter this year.
He said his vision was to bequeath a vibrant petroleum industry that will guarantee long term strategic investments and prosperity for Nigerians.
“My plan is to ensure that during my tenure, four Final Investment Decisions (FIDs) are taken. I am sure that within the next quarter, we should be able to conclude on some of these FIDs so as to grow the industry,” the Minister stated.
The Minister also highlighted gas development as part of government priority to fast track the industrialization drive of the country.
“As you are aware, we are focusing on the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) pipeline project which will address some of our power issues and encourage the setting up of local industries and businesses along different areas in Nigeria.”
Sylva also shed more light on the imperative of rehabilitating the nation’s refineries, saying that it was unsustainable for Nigeria to continue to import petroleum products.
The Minister further stated that while private investment in the refining sector is encouraged, Government should focus more on the repair of its existing refineries.
“People are talking about modular refineries, we know that modular refineries are part of the solution but they can only be part of the solution and not the solutions themselves. So, we are going to try to encourage modular refineries but before that, we are going to really focus on repairing the existing refineries to ensure that we are back on stream very shortly,” Sylva added.
He maintained that government was also looking at the issue of reducing the cost of production through robust engagement with the International Oil Companies (IOCs) towards getting best value for all stakeholders.
According to the Minister, Nigeria needed to lend its voice to global energy fora as they remain some of the best platforms where major decisions that impact the global energy landscape are taken.

Four Nigerians arrested for torturing house help in Ghana (photos)






Four Nigerians were arrested and transferred to Accra Regional Police Command on Tuesday September 10, after torturing and disfiguring their Ghanaian house help. 
 
The pummeled househelp was saved after his cries attracted residents of East Legon, where the Nigerians lived. Joy News’ Latif Iddrisu reported that the victim’s head had increased to about twice its original size before he got help.

The Islamic Movement of Nigeria served an update on the Ashura procession it engaged in today September 10, across the country. 
 
According to the Islamic group popularly known as Shi'ites, 15 of its members were killed in Kaduna, Bauchi, Gombe, Sokoto and others during the procession. Expressing fear that the number may rise, spokesman of IMN, Ibrahim Musa said three people were killed by the police in Kaduna and 10 others injured.

AMCON drags wife of former Ondo State governor, Funke Agagu to court over unpaid N32million debt






The Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) in a bid to recover a debt of N32,136,877.25, has dragged Agagu Olufunke Ibidun, the wife of former Governor of Ondo state, Olusegun Agagu, before a Federal high court in Lagos.  
 
Joined as co-defendants in the debt recovery suit are the son of the former Governor, Agagu Feyisayo Opeyemi and Central Securities Clearing Systems Plc. In a statement of claim filed before the court by Prime -Gentry Chartered Secretaries &Attorneys on behalf of the debt recovery agency, it was alleged that Agagu Feyisayo Opeyemi, who was a customer of United Bank for Africa Plc applied for a loan and was consequently granted same by virtue of a letter of offer of loan value at N6,177,600 dated 19th June, 2007 for the acquisition of UBA approved shares from the capital market or public offer.  
 
The loan had a tenor of repayment period of 12 months and ought to have been fully repaid by 18th June, 2008. However, the loan remained unpaid and was accordingly categorized as non performing loan.    
 
AMCON avers that it is entitled to judgement against Agagu Feyisayo Opeyemi as per its statement of claim, having failed to repay the outstanding loan facility. Pursuant to an application filed by AMCON on October 9, 2018, the court granted an interim order on 12th of December, 2018 directing Central Securities Clearing System Plc to transfer the subject shares to AMCON to preserve same pending the filing of the substantive suit.  
 
However, in a calculated attempt to over reach and foist fait accompli on the order of the court and frustrate the efforts of AMCON to recover the debt, Agagu Feyisayo Opeyemi, haven  gotten wind of the order, purportedly sold and transferred the subject shares to his mother Agagu Olufunke Ibidun on 13th December, 2018.  
 
Consequently, AMCON is making the following claims against Agagu Feyisayo Opeyemi:

Quote:An order against him for the payment of the sum of N32,136,877.25 being the outstanding sums he owed AMCON Interest at the rate of 15% per annum from 16th of August, 2018 until judgement and thereafter at the rate of 10% per annum until liquidation of the judgement sum.
2.  An order granting AMCON a power of sale in respect of the stocks clearly identified to belong to Agagu Feyisayo Opeyemi and all other shares owed by him to be applied towards liquidation of his indebtedness.  
3.  An order nullifying the purported sale of the shares by Agagu Feyisayo Opeyemi to his mother on the premise that the said illusory sale made on 13th December, 2018 was a deliberate and calculated attempt by Agagu Feyisayo Opeyemi to overreach the court and foist a fait accompli on the order of the court.

Breaking: Robert Mugabe’s burial postponed indefinitely






The burial of Robert Mugabe, the late former president of Zimbabwe has been postponed indefinitely.  
 
The burial was earlier scheduled to hold on Sunday September 15th in Zimbabwe but its not likely to hold again as family members of the deceased ex-president confirmed the development to Zimlive.    
 
According to Mugabe’s nephew, Leo Mugabe, who is also the family’s spokesman, Mugabe was a chief and he would be given a traditional burial. He said, “Mugabe was a chief and he will be buried in accordance with tradition. The chiefs have not told us where he will be buried, so it is not clear yet. I also don’t know”.  

Mugabe died on Friday at the age of 95 in Singapore, where he was receiving medical treatment.  Mugabe’s body is expected back in Zimbabwe on Wednesday.

The police has arrested a 24-year-old man, Ebenezer Olorunleke, who allegedly killed his brother with three other gang members and stole his Motorbike alongside other items.
Addressing journalists in Ado Ekiti on Tuesday during a parade, the Police Commissioner, Mr Asuquo Amba, said the suspect, who hailed from Jege in Kogi State killed his brother with the aid of a knife and long screwdriver on August 29, 2019, and fled.

The commissioner said the suspect and three others invaded his brother’s home at Abe Cocoa area of Okeila and stabbed him to death and stole his red coloured Bajaj motorbike with registration number ADK 100 UJ.

Recovered from the suspect, whose accomplices are still at large are a long screwdriver, knife and Bajaj motorcycle.
“They hit him in the stomach and pierced his intestine when his wife and children were not at home. He had confessed to have committed the offence, he said.

Another police source revealed that the attackers allegedly drove a long nail into deceased’s skull while struggling to rob him.
Recounting how his brother was killed, Olorunleke said what his friends who allegedly killed his brother wanted to do was to help him collect money from him, describing his brother as a stingy individual.
“I did not follow them inside the room, but upon realising that my brother had been stabbed and was shouting, I rushed in and wanted to rescue him but he bit me and chopped off my finger.
“The guys later came to my house to attack me. They wanted to sell the machine, I resisted it. I was thinking of coming to the police to report when I was arrested with the machine”, he said.

Police arrest army deserter for robbery in Adamawa

Two suspects, including an army deserter, have been arrested by the police in Adamawa for robbing a woman of her car at gunpoint.
The Adamawa Police Command spokesman, DSP Suleiman Yahaya, confirmed the development to newsmen on Tuesday in Yola.

Yahaya said the deserter, Dompa Hyellambamun and one Emmanuel Adeka had accosted a woman in the early hours of Tuesday around target junction in Yola, where they fired four shots scaring her to hand over her car.
“She immediately reported the incident to our men on patrol in the area, who, in collaboration with some vigilante personnel, trailed the suspects and arrested them.
“The vehicle was recovered. Also recovered are AK 47 rifle with 35 rounds of ammunition and a military uniform.

“One of the suspects introduced himself as a military man and that he was deployed to Monguno in Borno for special duty, from where he abandoned his duty,’’ Yahaya said.

This 16-year-old boy burgled a shop and stole a Samsung laptop, mobile phones and designer clothes including used panties.

The presidency yesterday revealed the message conveyed to South African President, Mr. Cyril Ramaphosa, by President Muhammadu Buhari’s special envoy, Mr. Ahmed Rufai Abubakar, which had hitherto been shrouded in secrecy.

The presidential brief showed that the South African government repudiated the general belief that recent attacks on foreigners in the country were xenophobic even as THISDAY independent sources said its senior officials put the deaths since December 2017 at 89.

Abubakar, who is the Director General, National Intelligence Agency (NIA), was dispatched to South Africa in the wake of the xenophobic attacks by South Africans against their fellow Africans, including Nigerians.

The attacks, which are yet to abate, have made the federal government to intensify efforts at evacuating Nigerians willing to return home from South Africa.

So far, 640 Nigerians have registered to come back home from the rainbow nation.

The evacuation plans are going on just as efforts are being made for a peaceful resolution of the diplomatic crisis between the two top African nations.

Already, a former presidential candidate, Mrs. Obiageli Ezekwesili, and leaders of the Nigerian community in Cape Town have met to proffer a solution to recurring xenophobic attacks in South Africa with a demand that the South African government should apologise to Nigeria.

In spite of the general belief, THISDAY presidential sources said yesterday, that President Cyril Ramaphosa and senior officials of his government insisted to Buhari’s envoy that the widespread attacks were not xenophobic, revealing that although between December 2017 and September 2019, 89 Nigerians were killed in the country, 39 of them were slain by their compatriots due to drugs related disputes.

South African officials nevertheless admitted that 19 of the death arose from police brutality while the rest were due to other causes.

The South African authorities were also said to have revealed that between 300,000 to 400,000 Nigerians are in South Africa. Of this number, 10,860 are currently in prison serving various terms but 60 percent of these inmates are in for drug-related crimes.

The authorities reportedly told the envoy that there are three categories of Nigerians in South Africa. The first are professionals, who are doing very well in such fields as medicine and the academics. The second are businessmen, including genuine traders. The third are those into drugs.

“These people (drug couriers) are few but they are very loud. Sadly, it is they that are seen as the faces of Nigeria in South Africa,” a senior official was said to have told the special envoy.

The history of Nigerians in South Africa was traced to the face-off between the late President Nelson Mandela and late Gen. Sani Abacha, following the killing of environmental rights activist, Dr. Ken Saro-Wiwa, in 1995. After the spat between the two leaders, Mandela said any Nigerian desirous of relocating to South Africa could do so. Many took him by his word and went.

However, giving details of what transpired between the president’s special envoy and Ramaphosa, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, said in a statement yesterday that the special envoy, who was in Pretoria from September 5 to September 7, among others, conveyed to Ramaphosa the president’s deep concern about violence against Nigerians in his country.

Highlighting the message delivered by Abubakar and the response of Ramaphosa, whom he said described the attacks as embarrassing, Adesina said the special envoy told the South African president about Buhari’s deep concern about the intermittent violence against Nigerians and their property/business interests in South Africa.

He said: “President Buhari stressed the need for South African Government to take visible measures to stop violence against citizens of brotherly African nations.

“President Buhari is worried that the recurring issue of xenophobia could negatively affect the image and standing of South Africa as one of the leading countries on the continent, if nothing is done to stop it.

“The special envoy conveyed the assurance of President Buhari that the Nigerian government is ready and willing to collaborate with the South African government to find a lasting solution to the involvement of few Nigerians in criminal activities, and to protect the lives and property of the larger groups of other law abiding Nigerians and indeed Africans in general, against all forms of attacks including xenophobia.

“President Buhari further assured that the Nigerian Government would guarantee the safety of lives, property and business interests of South Africans in Nigeria.”

Adesina also narrated the South African President’s response to the envoy’s message, saying Ramaphosa “agreed that the violence was most disconcerting and embarrassing.”

He also said the South African president told the envoy that his government completely rejected acts of xenophobia, which he said undermined not only the country’s image but also its relations with brotherly African countries.

According to the statement, Ramaphosa did not only reaffirm his stance against criminality but also expressed his commitment to doing everything possible to protect the rights of every Nigerian and other foreign nationals in the country.

Adesina also added that the special envoy also interfaced with his South African counterpart where they both reviewed the situation of foreign emigrants in general and Nigerians in particular.
According to him, they agreed to work together to find a permanent solution to the root causes of the recurring attacks on Nigerians and their property.

He also added that Buhari had taken note of the report and consequently instructed the Minister of Foreign Affairs to continue to engage appropriate authorities on concrete measure the South African government is expected to take.

Adesina also said Buhari gave an instruction for the immediate evacuation of all Nigerians who are willing to return home.
640 Nigerians Register to Return from South Africa

Meanwhile, the federal government has said 640 Nigerians have registered to come back home from South Africa.

The federal government had earlier deferred the date for the evacuation following the need to get travel certificates for many of them that do not have legal papers and others that have expired passports.

With the support of Air Peace, the government has scheduled tomorrow to begin the evacuation.

However, the Chairman, CEO of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, in a statement yesterday, said 640 Nigerians had registered to come back to Nigeria so far, adding that Air Peace in two operations would transport them home.

Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Ferdinand Nwonye, had earlier told THISDAY that the evacuation would begin this week, but said the day for the evacuation would be announced.

But a reliable source in the ministry told THISDAY that the evacuation might start tomorrow.

It was also learnt yesterday that the leaders of the Nigerian community in Cape Town have met with Ezekwesili to proffer a solution to recurring xenophobic attacks in South Africa, asking the South African government to apologise to Nigeria

The meeting, which took place on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Cape Town, South Africa, was attended by Nigerian entrepreneurs, professionals and the Nigerian community led by Mr. Cosmos Echie, the acting President of the Nigerian Community Western Cape.

According to the communiqué of the meeting held in the form of an interactive session and made available to THISDAY in Abuja, the group preferred to describe the attacks as “Afrophobia.”

“It was unanimously agreed that the crisis is detrimental to the spirit of African renaissance, affirmation of black heritage, progress and development,” it said, adding: “Afrophobia compromises everything that the recently brokered intra-African trade – Africa Continental Free Trade Agreement — represents and aspires to deliver.”

According to a copy of the communiqué made available to THISDAY yesterday, the governments of Nigeria and South Africa were urged to guide against provocative comments.
Ramaphosa was also asked to apologise to Nigerians and other countries whose citizens were attacked.

This, the experts said, would ensure that bilateral trade agreements between the two countries would not be affected.
