Sowore Speaks From Custody, Says Buhari Out To Destroy Civic Space
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion
Posted by: Edoman - 11-15-2019, 02:31 PM - No Replies

Detained social activist, publisher and politician, Omoyele Sowore, has spoken out from the custody of the State Security Service, telling PREMIUM TIMES he is being held as part of a grand scheme by the Buhari administration to shut down Nigeria’s civic space.

Mr Sowore called a PREMIUM TIMES’ reporter on Thursday afternoon, in a rare move to directly send out a message to the public.

It was a message of courage, defiance and hope for both his teeming supporters and the Nigerian downtrodden people.

The Sahara Reporters’ publisher said he would remain undeterred by the controversial tactics of the current government, which have seen him held in perpetual custody against the order of a federal judge.

Mr Sowore, a former student union activist who confronted military regimes and went to jail for it, was arrested in August in connection with his #RevolutionNow campaign — a series of nationwide protests he had planned with other activists to demand a better Nigeria.
The protests were planned to commence on August 5 across 21 towns and cities, with public awareness escalating as the day drew closer.

But suddenly on August 3, armed SSS officers broke into an apartment Mr Sowore was occupying with some of his closest associates in Lagos. He was taken away in the midnight raid that was captured by security cameras.
The arrest elicited outrage from Nigerians, with many slamming the SSS’ brutal tactics as yet another state-sponsored violence against unarmed citizens.

Members of the movement also warned that Mr Sowore’s detention — which they deemed illegal and unwarranted — would bolster rather than dampen a wave of resistance to decades of bad governance that many believed had worsened under President Muhammadu Buhari.

Grand plot thwarted
Speaking with PREMIUM TIMES from custody, Mr Sowore said the demand for his sureties was an attempt to intimidate them into pulling out.

“Their aim is to intimidate my sureties by subjecting them to undue maltreatment,” Mr Sowore said. “It is part of a grand plot to hold me hostage because they have failed to find anything illegal to pin on me.”

“But we know what they want to do and we will not allow it to happen,” he added.

Although the SSS has repeatedly asserted its respect for the Nigerian judicial and the rule of law in general, the agency has a history of repression, violation of citizens’ rights and disobedience of court decisions.

SSS was the agency at the heart of most allegations of attacks on Nigerians during the brutal military eras of Ibrahim Babangida and Sani Abacha. Several Nigerians were jailed, physically attacked or killed as Mr Abacha moved to clear all obstacles to his authoritarian regime.

Despite attempts to reform the agency as Nigeria attained democracy in 1999, critics say the SSS, founded in 1986, has remained wedded to its brutal and anti-democratic past.

Hale, hearty
Mr Sowore lamented that he had “not seen sunshine since he was detained except when taken to court.” Only three people have been allowed to see him since August 3, which includes his lawyers and the person responsible for his feeding.

Even though Mr Sowore said he cannot wait to reunite with his associates and loved ones, he said he had come to a fresh realisation that the SSS would continue to disregard court pronouncements and would not release him anytime soon.

“Last night, they gave us phones and cable TV,” Mr Sowore said. “This indicates that they have no intention of complying with court orders to release me anytime soon.’’

Mr Sowore said he will continue to fight for the downtrodden, and wanted the world to know that the Buhari administration has been stifling civil liberties in Nigeria.

“The world should know that I remain unbroken and in high spirits,” Mr Sowore said. “I will continue to fight for the Nigerian people, ensure that the people are not shortchanged and corruption is driven underground.”

“I will continue to stand up for the downtrodden,” he said.

Mr Sowore said all those who support him should not be discouraged because the masses will prevail in the battle against anti-democratic forces.

“The ultimate mission is to intimidate all critical voices and shut down the nation’s civic space,” Mr Sowore said. “But this will not happen and we shall overcome.”

Telecommunication companies protest as FG orders stoppage of voicemail service

Telecommunication operators in Nigeria have reacted to Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Patani's directive of deactivation of automatic voicemail service on existing phone lines.

The Minister stated that phone users were being exploited financially through the automatic voicemail service which should be accessed at the discretion of the subscriber and not by default.

Patani insisted that voicemail is not a popular service among mobile phone users in Nigeria and also has a language challenge among rural dwellers.

Quote:A statement by the minister’s spokesperson, Uwa Suleiman, quoted him as saying: ‘’The voicemail service should be accessed at the discretion of the subscriber and not by default. The Honourable Minister finds it worrisome and totally unacceptable, that telecoms subscribers incur financial charges, for a service they are compelled to use by default. Voicemail is not a popular service among mobile phone users in Nigeria, coupled with the language challenge among rural dwellers, who mostly do not understand the language deployed by these networks.

“In the light of this, Dr Pantami has issued a broad policy directive to the sector regulator Nigerian Communications Commission, to immediately ensure that issues regarding automatic voicemails are addressed on all existing phone lines and the subscribers, given the option of accessing the service via an activation code.”

However the Chairman of Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria, Gbenga Adebayo who reacted to the directive in a phone interview with Daily Trust said the issue is a regulatory one and shouldn't come from the Minister.

Quote:“The directive is unclear to us. The issue is a regulatory one and we don’t know why the he should a directive. It is an issue NCC is capable of handling’’, Adebayo said.

Electoral process has failed in Nigeria – Former INEC boss, Attahiru Jega

Former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Attahiru Jega has decried the failure of the electoral process to entrench good governance in Africa.

Jega stated this on Thursday, November 14th at the University of Ibadan, UI, while delivering 2019 Convocation Lecture titled, “Towards Credible Electoral Process and Sustainable Political Systems in Nigeria: What role for Universities”.

Quote:He said, “All over Africa, and indeed, to some extent, throughout the developing world, the electoral process is failing to entrench good governance and stable and sustainable democratic political systems as a result of what can be termed as a deficit of electoral integrity”.
According to him, deeply embedded unwholesome practices, such as use of money, violence, incumbency powers, and a range of electoral malpractices and fraudulent activities in the electoral process grossly undermine its utility as a vehicle for liberal democratic development.  He revealed that dominant political classes can, and often do, hijack the electoral process through various means, to access power for selfish and self-serving objectives, rather than for democratic development that would satisfy the needs and aspirations of majority of the citizens in the country.
Quote:“In virtually all cases, ritualized elections, which lack integrity merely serve to legalize, if not ‘legitimize’, access and control of power into executive or legislative arms of government by people unconcerned with, or indifferent to, the requirements of sustainable democratic development. Hence, such elections do not catalyze, nor guarantee responsive and responsible representation and/or governance”, he said.
Jega affirmed that studies of elections and election observation reports generally, and on Nigeria in particular, exposed profound evidence of persistent electoral malpractices, the enormity and consequences of which undermined the integrity of the elections and the democratization processes they are supposed to engender.

The electoral administrator stated that, “a situational and contextual analysis of the electoral process in Nigeria reveals an incredible level of electoral malpractices and thus acute deficiency in electoral integrity, which are no doubt among the major sources/causes of political instability, weakness and inadequacy of the governance process and eroded legitimacy of elected government I the country”.

For the restoration and entrenching electoral integrity, Jega advocated for continuous legal and administrative reforms, as well as sensitization and public enlightenment, “most significantly, there is need for all stakeholders to strengthen their constructive engagement with the electoral process, with a view to improving, protecting and defending its integrity.”

Bauchi State chief judge frees 33 inmates during 2019 jail delivery exercise

Bauchi State Chief Judge, Justice Rabi Talatu Umar has released a total number of 33 inmates.

Of the 33 inmates, 26 were released while seven others were released on bail. The inmates were released during the 2019 third and fourth quarter jail delivery exercise in the state.

Quote:Briefing journalists at the end of the two-day exercise in Bauchi Medium Security Custodial Center, Justice Umar noted that, “Those released have spent over five years in custody without their cases being duplicated and transmitted to the State Ministry of Justice for legal advice.”
The Chief Judge maintained that the undue delay had caused the inmates to remain in detention longer than necessary without conviction.

She called on relevant stakeholders in the criminal justice system to be alive to their responsibilities.  Justice Umar admonished the released inmates to turn a new leaf and live meaningful lives.

A 45-year-old policewoman (name withheld) on Thursday narrated to an Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court how a fellow police personnel, Mohammed Alidu, allegedly defiled her nine-year-old daughter in a police barracks.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the policewoman was the second Prosecution Witness (PW2) in the of trial of Alidu, a police sergeant, for defilement.

The PW2 was led in evidence by Mr Akin George, Deputy-Director, Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecutions.

She said that the defendant accosted her daughter (name withheld) on her way home from school, dragged he
r into his house and defiled her.

“We live at Makinde Barracks, Mafoluku, Oshodi, Lagos.

“On June 29, 2018, I was at work when my husband, who was out of Lagos, called me to inform me that Sgt. Mohammed defiled our daughter.
“I went to the police station which is within the same compound of the barracks, and my daughter was in the police station.

“My daughter told me that when she was coming back from school, Mohammed called her but she did not respond.

“She said he forcefully took her to his apartment, put her on a bed, tore her underwear and defiled her,” she said.
According to her, Mohammed was also at the police station, begging and telling the divisional police officer that it was the work of the devil.

The policewoman said that her daughter was taken to the Mirabel Center (a sexual assault referral centre) for medical examination, and doctors confirmed that she was defiled.

During cross-examination by defence counsel, Mr Sunday Odise, the policewoman told the court that the defendant lived near her residence.
“He did not have a house within the barracks. He was sleeping in a shop opposite our home,” she said.

Earlier, the PW1 and the investigative police officer of the case, Sgt. Juweratu Ashiru, told the court that shortly the alleged defilement, the victim reported the incident at the police station.

“She told me that when Mohammed dragged her into the wooden house he lived, to defile her, she screamed during her ordeal and that no one rescued her.
“Mohammed was arrested at the wooden house where the crime occurred, and when we took his confessional statement, he said that it was the devil’s work.

“He said we should forgive him and drop the case, but we refused and said that he must face the full wrath of the law.

“The victim’s underwear was torn. I recovered the underwear and it was kept as an exhibit in the Gender Unit of the Police Force,” Ashiru said.

NAN reports that Justice Abiola Soladoye ordered members of the public to leave the courtroom when the alleged victim, now 10-year-old, was to give evidence.

After she testified, the judge adjourned the case until Jan. 15, 2020, for continuation of of trial.

THE CRIMINAL CONTEMPT BY MR TIMIPRIYE SILVA

Just tonight, on prime time television (Channels) programme monitored by me in Lagos, the Hon Minister of State for Petroleum, Mr Timipriye Silva, described a sitting judge of the Federal High Court, Yenagoa Division, Hon Justice Ekwo as a “bad egg that deserves to be flushed out of the judiciary”.

I have read earlier in the day that on another radio programme, he variously described her as a “harlot”.

Mr Timipriye Silva is not a party to the case pending before the court and he is not a lawyer to any of the parties. Even at that, it is uncouth and undignified for a serving Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to descend so low in employing gutter language against a sitting judge.

It is the greatest act of contempt against the authority and integrity of the judiciary for a citizen to describe a judicial officer as a bad egg or a harlot, all because a judgment was delivered by the said judge which is considered unfavorable and for which an appeal has already been filed.

We cannot sit by and watch this flagrant desecration of the temple of justice by people who should serve as role models for others.

I therefore urge the Nigerian Bar Association, the National Judicial Council and the Hon Chief Justice of Nigeria, to proceed against Mr Timipriye Silva urgently, until such a time that he is able to purge himself of the contempt brazenly committed against His Lordship, in the due exercise of a judicial function.

Lekki, Lagos.

RHAPSODY OF REALITIES

FRIDAY, 15TH NOVEMBER.

LIGHT IN A DARK WORLD

Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the LORD is risen upon thee. For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the LORD shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee (Isaiah 60:1-2).

There’s so much evil, wickedness, and persecution in the world today, and many are troubled as a result. But it’s actually a fulfilment of the Scriptures; the Bible says, “This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come 2 Timothy 3:1).

The ensuing verses 2-5 enumerate some of the evil that’ll characterize these last days: “People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without selfcontrol, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God—having a form of godliness but denying its power…” (2 Timothy 3:2-5 NIV).

Now, while all these are happening, something even bigger will be taking place as well. The Bible says, “For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the LORD shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee. And the Gentiles shall come to thy light…” (Isaiah 60:2-3).

Notice the underlined portion, and then recall what we read in our opening scripture. Irrespective of the darkness and evil in the world in these last days, you’re to shine ever so brightly.

He says, “...the Gentiles shall come to thy light”; this is much more than God’s light shining upon us, and His glory seen in us. Rather, it’s us bringing forth a new season; a new day. Think about it this way: when Jesus came, He brought forth the new creation; He raised sons of God; that was His purpose.

Then He said concerning us, “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid” (Matthew 5:14). So, what’s happening is, while there’s darkness in the world, we’re not waiting for the light of God to shine; rather, we shine, for He’s made us His light in a dark world. How do you shine? It’s by acting out God’s Word; living out the Gospel; doing the works of God. Matthew 5:16, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” Glory be to God!

CONFESSION

I’m the light of the world, and my light shines everywhere, dispelling evil, wickedness and other works of darkness; ushering men into the glorious liberty of the sons of God. Hallelujah!

#AFFIRMATIONTRAIN

15TH NOVEMBER.

I affirm that I am in God's place for my life! The Word of God is in my heart and my mouth; and as I think and meditate on the Word today, the circumstances of my day align with the will and purpose of God for me!

I attract myself only to thoughts that are consistent with my destiny in Christ-thoughts of victory, increase, success, health, and strength. I am in Christ; I am not a child of chance.

God has prearranged my life for good. I walk those paths that have been laid out for me before the foundations of the world and I prosper in all my ways.

I am sensitive to the leading of the Spirit and my heart is open to fresh ideas and innovations. I refuse to live a life of excuse and procrastination. I am on the right path; enjoying God's manifold riches in every area of my life.

I'll never be helpless in life; for God has the right people at the right place and at the right time to favour my course. The lifting power of God is at work in me, thus, when men are cast down, there's a lifting up for me.

I have enough time and whatever time it is that is left, is enough to finish all that God has put in my heart to do. I've gained the speed of the spirit and I will finish my course with great joy. Glory to God.

God bless you

LASG Arrests 19 Suspected Land Grabbers (photo)

Quote:The Lagos State Special Task Force on Land Grabbers has arrested 19 suspects for alleged trespass, illegal occupation, forceful land takeover and prevention of lawful entry by violence.

It was learnt that the suspects were arrested by officials of the LSSTFLG, led by the Coordinator, Owolabi Arole, and police officers attached to the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit in connection with a land on Plot 1, Block II, Ogudu Phase II Government Residential Scheme in the Kosofe Local Government Area of the state.

The state Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, who is also the Chairman of the Special Task Force, Moyo Onigbanjo, noted that the suspects had been handed over to the police for prosecution at the Lagos State Special Offences Court in Ikeja.

He said, “The arrest is the culmination of investigation carried out by the special task force on land grabbers after a petition was submitted by attorneys of Ade Bamtefa, the petitioner and claimant of the land.

“On receiving the petition, officials of the task force swung into action. Both parties were invited for a meeting to establish the veracity or otherwise of the petition. It was, however, discovered from our findings that the arrested persons resorted to self-help by not only trespassing on the land which had been cordoned off with a ‘Keep Off’ inscription pending the conclusion of an investigation, but also erecting structures on the land.

“This is unacceptable and contrary to some sections of the Property Protection Law, 2016. Government residential schemes are planned schemes documented under the law which ordinarily shouldn’t be subject to cases of land grabbing and illegal occupation.

“This current trend of having land grabbers encroaching on land under government schemes is unacceptable and will be treated seriously like other cases of land grabbing.”

Onigbanjo urged land and property owners in the state to perfect legal documents pertaining to their property, noting that it would check land grabbers and ensure easy administration of justice in the event that such property was encroached on.

Malaria Control: 13 States To Benefit From $250 Million World Bank Loan
User Avatar Forum: News
Posted by: Edoman - 11-15-2019, 08:04 AM - No Replies

Quote:The federal government is about to secure a $250 million World Bank facility to fund intervention programmes to check malaria disease in 13 states of the federation, which are not currently covered by the existing government intervention programmes.

The affected states include, Borno, Kogi, Edo, Enugu, Imo, Anambra, Ekiti and Bayelsa, as well as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The National Coordinator, of the National Malaria Elimination Programme, Dr. Audu Bala Mohammed, stated this yesterday at the third annual summit of legislative network for universal health coverage held in Abuja.

He said the National Assembly had approved the proposal to secure the $250 million World Bank loan to tackle malaria.

He added that presently, the federal government’s malaria intervention covers 24 states out of the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

“Before now, we were required to cover the whole country but because of this donor fatigue, the amount of money they are giving is not enough to go round the states; so, we have to restrict it to 13 states for the global funds, which are a major donor and 11 states benefiting from presidential malaria initiative. So, we have 13 states where currently we don’t do anything with them and we have to find a way to fill the gap. “ So, at the moment, we are in the process of securing $250 million from the World Bank to tackle the malaria scourge in the remaining 13 states so that the disease can be addressed in a more holistic manner.”

According to Mohammed, 25 per cent of world malaria cases are found in Nigeria, while 19 per cent of deaths recorded from malaria disease worldwide are also in the country.

He said Nigeria had recorded some progress in reversing malaria cases from 42 per cent to 37 per cent within five years when the whole country was aggressively covered before the present relapse.

Mohammed said in order to eradicate malaria scourge, there has to be aggressive intervention on sustainable basis and not small measures or the present partial coverage in some states.

He explained that the federal government has made a proposal of $1.5 billion in its 2014-2020 strategic action plan to address malaria scourge.

Mohammed, however, lamented that this estimate is far from being met, adding that instead, sources of funds are shrinking due donor apathy.

Also while making his presentation at the summit, the Director General of the National Centre for Disease Control in Nigeria (NCDC), Chikwe Ihekweazu, said almost all the 36 states of the federation and the FCT were faced with one form of disease epidemic or the other.

He said beyond the few states where disease epidemic has been reported, other states in the country were threatened by other endemic diseases.

While declaring the summit open, the Senate President, Dr. Ahmad Lawan, who was represented by Senator Robert Ajayi Borrofice, assured the gathering that the National Assembly will always treat health issues with priority it deserves.

He expressed the hope that the one per cent intervention fund set aside from the country’s consolidated revenue account for basic healthcare will be appropriately utilised to deepen health coverage.

He also said the newly signed law on oil production sharing contract would provide government additional $1.6 billion to be channelled towards development of the country.

Similarly, the representative of the World Health Organisation (WHO), Ibrahim Mamodu, urged governments at the federal and state levels to ensure that budgetary allocations to the health sector are not only released in full, but promptly too.

A woman has been arrested in Argentina for allegedly trying to smuggle four kilos of drugs in a fake baby bump.

Police said they discovered she was faking her pregnancy after they found a man she was travelling with on a long-distance coach carrying a small amount of marijuana in a black bag. The coach was heading to the Patagonian city of Santa Oliva.

According to Police, the pair were arrested at a police checkpoint in an area known as Valle de Uco near Mendoza close to Argentina's border with Chile.

Argentina's Minister for Security Patricia Bullrich tweeted photos of the bust, saying: 'She made a belly out of paste, hid 15 cannabis bricks inside it and faked a pregnancy before trying to take it from Mendoza to Santa Cruz.

PDP reacts to photos of Governor El-Rufai kneeling to beg Kogi residents, says his action shows Governor Yahaya Bello does not merit re-election

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says the public apology and kneeling by the Chairman of the APC Kogi state campaign council and Kaduna state governor, Nasir El-Rufai, confirms that even the APC agrees that Kogi state governor, Yahaya Bello, does not merit a second term.

Governor El-Rufai knelt before the people of Kogi State, asking them to forgive Governor Yahaya Bello for any wrong he had done. He begged the Kogi indigents during a campaign for Governor Yahaya ahead of the state's governorship election this Saturday, November 16th.

In a statement released by its spokesperson, Kola Ologbondiyan, PDP claimed that El-Rufai kneeling at the campaign rally is a direct confirmation that the ''failed Governor Bello cannot lay claim to any genuine vote at the November 16th governorship election''. Read the remaining part of the statement below

Quote:''The PDP notes that the Edo State deputy governor, Philip Shuaibu, also knelt before the Kogi people to beg for Yahaya Bello which further shows that it is public knowledge that the governor misused the opportunity given to him to lead the state.
Unfortunately, the apology is coming too late in the day and cannot be accepted by the people of Kogi state, whose lives, Yahaya Bello had turned into a living hell in the last four year.
Moreover, Yahaya Bello openly confirmed that he is irredeemable as he stood without any sign of remorse while El-Rufai and the Edo State deputy governor begged the unimpressed scanty crowd.
Governor El-Rufai and the APC ought to have counseled Yahaya Bello at the time he was busy suppressing, insulting, abusing and making life unbearable for the people of Kogi state as if there will not be a day of reckoning.
The irreversible fact is that the day of reckoning has come. The people of Kogi state have moved beyond Yahaya Bello and the APC. They are already moving on with the PDP candidate, Engr. Musa Wada, in their determination for a new order in their state and there is no looking back.
PDP advises Governor El-Rufai to assist Governor Bello in preparing his handover notes as he will surely face a crushing defeat at the polls, come Saturday November 16th''.

Shi’ite member allegedly killed during clash with Police in Kaduna

An alleged clash between the police and some members of Sheikh Zakzaky-led Shi’ites group, the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) which reportedly occurred in the late hours of today November 14, at the Central Market area of Kaduna metropolis allegedly left one dead.

It was gathered that members of the outlawed Islamic group gathered by 4pm to celebrate Eid Maulud and stage a protest but it was allegedly squashed by the police who also countered same in Zaria.

IMN spokesperson, Ibrahim Musa told newsmen that the police opened fire on them during the procession to mark the 17th Rabiul Awwal which is the birthday of the Prophet according to Shi’ites books.

Quote:“Reports reaching the Islamic Movement in Nigeria indicate that one of the four casualties recorded earlier when police opened fire on worshippers marking the Maulud in Zaria, Muhammad Salisu has died.
“He was killed by police bullet that pierced the center of his heart when they indiscriminately shot into the crowd with an aim to kill.
“The police, who arrived as the closing prayers were being offered, opened fire at point blank range without warning and hurriedly ran into their vehicles and left the scene.
‘A very colourful Maulud procession that preceded that attack by the police had ended peacefully without an incident” he said.

The Kaduna State Police Spokerson, DSP Yakubu Sabo however denied claims of its men engaging in a bloody fight with IMN members. He also reminded the Islamic group that they've been outlawed.

Quote:“Yes, we received reports from Good Samaritans at about 1545hrs that, some members of the outlawed Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) were sighted at the Central area of Kaduna Metropolis and our operatives promptly responded.
“However, on sighting security agents, the protesters melted into the mass population of men and women who were maning their legitimate businesses within the market area. There was no encounter whatsoever with the Police and no casualty was recorded as well.
“Furthermore, similar violent procession was carried out in Zaria today by the banned IMN group and it took the gallant efforts of security agents comprising of the Police, Army and the Civil Defence to disperse the protesters and ensure public order and safety. No casuality was recorded as well.
“The Command wishes to remind members of the public that, the ban on all forms of processions in Kaduna State is still in force.
“Hence, the Command will not hesitate to deal decisively with any person or group of persons who are hell bent at causing disharmony or breach of the public peace and safety within the ambit of the law" he said.

Nigeria To Form Border Force With Neighbors Benin And Niger To Fight Smuggling
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion
Posted by: Edoman - 11-15-2019, 07:14 AM - No Replies

Quote:By Camillus Eboh

ABUJA (Reuters) - Nigeria and neighboring countries Benin and Niger have agreed to set up a joint border patrol force to tackle smuggling between the West African countries, they said in a communique on Thursday.

Foreign ministers from the three countries met to discuss smuggling following a decision by regional giant Nigeria, which has Africa's largest economy and biggest population, to close its land borders to trade until at least Jan. 31, 2020.

Nigeria launched a partial border closure in August to tackle smuggling of rice and other goods. And last month the head of customs confirmed that all trade via land borders had been halted indefinitely.

The joint communique from the meeting in Nigeria's capital, Abuja, said the Benin and Niger delegations had appealed for the immediate re-opening of Nigeria's borders.

The concerns were noted and the delegates agreed on the "establishment of a joint border patrol team comprising the police, customs, immigration, navy and state security services of the three countries", the communique said.

The force will hold its first meeting in Abuja on Nov. 25 and 26 and will later advise on the re-opening of the borders.

The delegates also agreed that the ministers of finance and trade from the countries would set up a committee to promote intra-regional trade, and said they would ensure people crossing their borders would display travel documents recognized by the Economic Community of West African States regional bloc.

Since taking office in 2015, Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has introduced policies aimed at curbing imports and smuggling, to boost local production.

Despite being Africa's top crude oil producer, Nigeria imports most of its refined fuel due to the moribund state of its refineries.

Some 10-20% of Nigerian fuel is then smuggled to neighboring countries, according to the Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria, as gasoline is heavily subsidized in the country and prices are higher in neighboring countries.

In July, Nigeria signed up to the African Continental Free Trade Area, a project to create a $3.4 trillion economic bloc, despite its fears that it could be flooded with cheap goods from competitive neighbors.

Buhari’s Government Breaks World Record, As The Most Incompetent Government –

BREAKING: Buhari’s Government Breaks World Record, As The Most Incompetent Government – Details :November 12,
[Image: IMG-20190717-WA0004-890x395.jpg]

Over two months after President Muhammadu Buhari inaugurated his cabinet, the names of 22 of the 43 Ministers, are still missing from the Federal Government’s website.

Buhari on August 21, inaugurated the Ministers, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, and assigned portfolios to them.
However, a check on the website of the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, on Monday, showed that out of the 43 Ministers, only 37 (designations), were listed, leaving out 6.
The 6 left out are either new Ministries created by Buhari, or those carved out from the existing ones.

Out of the 37 designations listed, only 21 names were supplied.
The remaining 16 slots were either left vacant, or the inscription, “Minister has not been appointed”, written against them, despite the Ministers been assigned portfolios, and have since resumed work.

The Ministers listed on the website as not appointed yet are the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment; Minister of Niger Delta; Minister of State, Niger Delta; Minister of Petroleum; Minister of State for Petroleum; Minister of Power; Minister of State, Power; Minister of Works and Housing; Minister of State, Works and Housing; Minister of Science and Technology; Minister of Solid Minerals; and Minister of State, Solid Minerals.
Others are Minister of Transportation; Minister of State, Aviation; Minister of Water Resources; Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development; and Minister of Youth and Sports.

Although Festus Keyamo and Tayo Alasoadura have since swapped positions, Keyamo was listed as the Minister of State for Niger Delta (his former position), while Alasoadura was named Minister of State for Labour.
While Mrs. Zainab Ahmed was named Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, the website erroneously identified her as the Minister of Finance (the old designation).

The Minister of State for Finance, Budget and National Planning, Clement Agba, was also erroneously listed as the Substantive Minister of Budget and National Planning.

Mustapha Shehuri was also erroneously listed as the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, instead of his correct position as Minister of State.

The new Ministries completely left out of the list are: the Ministry of Special Duties; Ministry of Police Affairs; Ministry of Power; and Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development.
Other Ministers who made the list are: Sale Mamman (Power), Ali Pantami (Communication), Bashir Magashi (Defence), Adamu Adamu (Education), Emeka Nwajiuba (State, Education), Muhammad Mahmood (Environment), and Mohammed Bello (FCT).

The rest are Geofffey Onyeama (Foreign Affairs), Zubair Dada (State, Foreign Affairs), Osagie Ehanire (Health), Adeleke Mamora (State, Health), Lai Mohammed (Information and Culture), Chris Ngige (Labour and Employment).

The Ministers whose names were conspicuously missing from the list are Rotimi Amaechi (Transportation), Gbemisola Saraki (State, Transportation), Hadi Sirika (Aviation), Suleiman Adamu (Water Resources), Pauline Tallen (Women Affairs), Sunday Dare (Youth and Sports), Mohammed Nanono (Agriculture and Rural Development), and Niyi Adebayo (Industry, Trade and Investment).

Others are: Maryam Katagum (Industry, Trade and Investment), Godswill Akpabio (Niger Delta), Timipre Sylva (State, Petroleum), Babatunde Fashola (Works and Housing), Ogbonnaya Onu (Science and Technology), George Akume (Special Duties), Mohammed Dangyadi (Police Affairs), Mohammed Abdullahi (State, Science and Technology), Sharon Ikeazor (State, Environment), Olamilekan Adegbite (Mines and Steel Development), Abubakar Aliyu (State, Works and Housing), Sadiya Faruk (Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development), Godwin Jedi-Agba (State, Power), and Ramatu Aliyu (State, FCT).

The Spokesman for the Pan-Yoruba group, Afenifere, Yinka Odumakin, described the development as a manifestation of the level of incompetence in the system.
He said that it was the combination of such “little things”, that led to national failure.

“The truth is that nobody is paying attention to all these details that matter.

“Their priorities are quite different from those of other well-meaning Nigerians.
“Clearly, this is a reflection of the kind of analogue people driving the system.
“The combination of such little things, results in our national failure as a country. It is unfortunate.”

Also, the Executive Director, Security Legislative Advocacy Centre and Head of Transparency International, Nigeria, Auwal Rafsanjani, condemned the development.

“Ministers were nominated, screened by the National Assembly, inaugurated by the President, who assigned portfolios to them, and months after, the government’s website is indicating a different thing. It is sad.”

He added: “Government must have a functional website, to communicate to Nigerians. Such website should be updated regularly and constantly.”

Cách đọc kèo bóng đá dễ hiểu
a) Kèo hòa – kèo đồng banh (0)

Sowore Vs Buhari - The Guardian UK Calls Nigeria 'A Climate Of Fear'

Quote:Climate of fear’: Nigeria intensifies crackdown on journalists

Fisayo Soyombo was eating an evening snack in Lagos in late October when a colleague called to warn him about a plan hatched by Nigerian government officials at a clandestine meeting to arrest him.

Hours earlier, the second in a three-part undercover series by the Abuja-based investigative journalist on corruption in Nigeria’s criminal justice system had been published.

“I made two more calls that night [to government sources] and it was clear I was in trouble,” Soyombo said. According to all three contacts, the government wanted to prosecute him under a law criminalising certain types of communication with inmates.

Soyombo pulled out of a public event he had travelled to Lagos for, and went into hiding.

Had he been detained, Soyombo would have been the latest victim of a crackdown on the media and freedom of speech this year in Nigeria, which is 12th out of 13 on the Committee to Protect Journalists’ Impunity Index, a ranking of countries with the worst records of unsolved murders of journalists.

Soyombo said he received a lot of support on social media in the days after he went into hiding, and that the plan to arrest him has seemingly been dropped. The Nigerian correctional service eventually released a statement saying work could be done to clean up the system, and that it had “no intention of arresting or harassing” Soyombo.

At least three journalists are currently detained in Nigeria.

Omoyele Sowore, an activist and founder of the New York-based online news agency Sahara Reporters, was taken by secret police from a hotel room in Lagos in August. Sowore, who stood as a candidate in February’s presidential elections and usually lives in the US, has been charged with treason, cyberstalking and money laundering for allegedly sharing false and insulting information about the president, Muhammadu Buhari. Despite being granted bail earlier this month his lawyers said they were denied access to him, and he remains in detention and is currently on hunger strike.

Jones Abiri, the publisher and editor-in-chief of the Weekly Source newspaper, was arrested in May and charged with cybercrime, sabotage and terrorism. The case related to 2016 allegations of links to rebels in the Niger Delta, after which he was detained by Nigeria’s intelligence agency for two years without trial.

In the southern state of Cross River, Agba Jalingo, who publishes the Cross River Watch paper, was arrested in August, days after the publication of an article about alleged corruption. Jalingo has been charged with treason and a bail request has been declined.

Human rights activists and civil society groups say that the muzzling of the press under Buhari has raised the spectre of a return to the dark days of military rule in Nigeria.

Buhari, a former army general who has been president since 2015, was also Nigeria’s head of state in the mid-1980s, when he took power in a military coup. At the time he introduced the draconian Public Officers (Protection Against False Accusation) law, better known as Decree 4. The law targeted the press, criminalising the publication of information deemed injurious to the junta.

“These [recent] incidents suggest a disturbing trend towards repression of freedom of expression and create a climate of fear which may stifle the media,” said Anietie Ewang, Nigeria researcher at Human Rights Watch. “Throwing reporters in jail for doing their job of informing the public sends a chilling message to journalists, activists and citizens.”

Soyombo said gagging the press was a misuse of power. “It is an irony that a president and state governors who ascended to power via the polls can suddenly not tolerate dissent,” he said.

Managing Director of Okomu Oil plc, Dr. Graham Heifer, has described the closure of borders as the best policy of the Federal Government as it has helped him to sell more products.

Dr. Heifer stated that the unmitigated illegal importation of palm oil caused a lot of logjam for his business.

He spoke to newsmen after receiving the certification by the Round Table on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) for palm oil producers.

Heifer stated that the border closure has helped him to move products to the market.

He said: “The border closure has assisted us. Before then, there was unmitigated illegal importation of oil palm. When they closed the borders, it removed the logjam which we are grateful for.

“It has helped us to move our product to the market. You know if our product stayed long, it might get old and people would not want it. That has helped us a lot. In terms of pricing pricing in it is better we move our products to sell it than the pricing.”

On the RSPO certification, Dr. Heifer said the internationally recognised certification audit was made possible by the enabling environment created by the Edo state government for the company to operate.

“The RSPO makes sure that the people that are working here have a very good living condition not just business but equitable and sustainable economic environment.

“It is making sure the company is not destroying the relationship with the people and if there are issues how does the company respond.

“It is a fully sustainable programme that allow the government as well to understand that this is an international recognised certificated scheme and the people in the communities are happy. This is good for the company and the government.

“They like to see companies like us here with RSPO because everything will be working according to international laws.”

Rights group faults Buhari’s poor budgetary allocation to education

Rights group faults Buhari’s poor budgetary allocation to education

A civil society group, Education Rights Campaign (ERC) has condemned the president Muhammadu Buhari’s administration over its poor budgetary allocation to the sector lamenting the woes faced by staff and students of Nigerian institutions.

National coordinator of ERC, Hassan Soweto said both the Federal and state governments have failed woefully in funding and maintenance of standard required for the provision of quality education for students and pupils.

Soweto who disclosed this at a briefing to expose the salient issues prevalent in the education sector said, “Effective 2015, budgetary allocations to education by Federal and state governments have continued to decline.

In the 2019 budget, only N620.5bn was allocated to public education while in the 2020 appropriation bill, only N652.94bn which is just 6.9 per cent of the sum is being proposed as allocation to the education sector.

“Considering the collapse of our currency and other economic factors, these allocation fall below previous budgets and are grossly incapable of addressing the basic needs of the sector,” Soweto lamented. He said all these play a vital role in nose diving qualitative education in the country.

“At the moment, the number of out-of -school children has risen to 13.5million, while those in school have to endure poor facilities, outmoded curriculum and inexperienced or ill-motivated teaching staff, leading to half-baked graduates. National Secretary of ERC, Inukun Omole accused tertiary institutions of extortion, mismanagement of funds and despotic steps towards staff unions and students.

Omole alleged that managements extort students by introducing all kinds of miscellaneous charges such as library, security, laboratory and practicals as means of increasing fees.

“For instance at the Lagos State University (LASU), a more novel way of increasing tuition through backdoor has been introduced and this is called Stream 2 admission programme with a price tag of N150, 000 per newly admitted students.”while stream 1 candidates pay the normal fee of N25, 000,” he said.

“Those who still recall our struggle in 2014 to make LASU affordable for both the rich and poor will find the new step taken disheartening.

“LASU receives up to half a billion naira subvention from Lagos state government every month, the highest paid by any government in South west Nigeria. They also received N3b TETFUND support, this is aside all other internally generated revenue from other programmes and activities in the coffers of LASU thus no need to overburden parents.

He mentioned that student union remains proscribed in UNILAG and FUOYE while workers in Lagos State-owned institutions are constantly victimised.

He also condemned sexual harassment on campuses describing it as a product of patriarchal and capitalist society that objectify women and reinforces their oppression.

Marketers, retailers decry increasing price of cooking gas
November 14, 2019

Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), commonly called cooking gas, is abundant in Nigeria. But it is not easily accessible to consumers as it should be. Also, the price of LPG that should be cheaper in view of the abundant reserves of natural gas it is not. Local price is always determined by happenings overseas and the international market. LPG marketers, under the aegis of the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers (NALPGAM), and retailers, under the umbrella of the Liquefied Petroleum Gas Retailers (LPGAR), a branch of Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), have cried out, saying cooking gas is getting out of reach of consumers. To them, winter and other weather conditions overseas and international price index should not determine the price of a product Nigeria has in abundance, EMEKA UGWUANYI reports.

Members of the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers (NALPGAM) are not happy with the increasing price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) also called cooking gas.

The marketers, reacting to the unwarranted price hike of the product, noted that this is happening despite concerted efforts of the government and stakeholders to deepen the use of LPG in the country.

NALGAM Executive Secretary, Mr. Bassey Essien, in a document by the group, said at this time of the year in the past, price hikes used to be attributable to winter and increased demand for heating energy and international price index. ‘’We have consistently questioned why a product in abundance in our country should become a victim of issues occurring internationally,’’ he said.

He said within the last one week, LPG price has soared and markerters did not know the cause. The price hike would dovetail into consumers paying more for the product. The consumers would blame marketers who are also caught up in the price hikes, Essien said.

Within five days, the price of a 20-metric tonne (MT) of LPG, which  sold for N3.15 million, jumped to N3.5 million, N3.9 million and within a few hours moved to N4.2 million, despite that the product has been in the storage of the terminals when the price was even sub N3.5 million, so why the sudden upsurge? he queried.

According to him, efforts to know the cause of the price increase from the terminals were futile.

At one of the terminals, there was a denial of any price increase. The head of LPG Sales at the company said the company had no stock, but when asked to explain the increase to N4.2 million, when the company had no stock, he was evasive. Some marketers, who had paid for LPG when it was N3.45 million and were awaiting loading were being intimidated with refund of their money except they agreed to pay the difference despite having tied down their funds without loading their trucks.

At another terminal, it was attributed to the interplay of forces of demand and supply; and in this case demand had outstripped supply. Elsewhere, importers have also attributed low supply to delay in accessing foreign exchange from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), which accounted for delayed payments to their business associates thus, the inability to oil the LPG supply cycle.

Essien said: “The Association is hereby disassociating itself and members from the antics of the current price hike and therefore, maintaining that the price increase is not the handiwork of marketers but rather that of the terminal owner, importers and the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG). Marketers are bemoaning the situation as the development has adversely affected business planning.

‘’If the trend is not halted immediately, the price of a 12.5kg cylinder of cooking gas may soon sell for over N6, 000 and well out of the purchasing power of the average consumer.

“This brings to question when the issue of product availability will ever be holistically addressed. We cannot deepen the use of LPG if availability of the product is not guaranteed.

“In the immediate need to reverse the price hike, we are calling on the NLNG to: flood the market with cooking gas since they have the capacity to do so; increase the frequency with which the vessels delver LPG from Bonny to the terminals; importers to free the PPMC Depot in Lagos for the delivery of NLNG product allocation; NLNG should supply LPG to other coastal terminals outside Lagos to reduce the inherent pressure on the terminals in the Southwest; and NLNG should deploy vessels of smaller capacities to access the coastal terminals if product availability must be achieved.”

On their part, members of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Retailers (LPGAR), a branch of Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), in a statement noted that the arbitrary increment in price of LPG and supply shortages is embarrassing especially for a country like Nigeria with abundant gas reserves.

The Branch Secretary of LPGAR, Comrade Olukayode Aborisade Solomon, said LPGAR branch of NUPENG is highly dissatisfied with sudden upsurge in price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) by tank farm (LPG depots) operators and what appears to be a deliberate reduction in supply or rotation of supply amongst the tank farms.

These, the group said, had led to about 90 per cent increment in gas price within a space of one week. It is likely that this ugly situation will continue if there is no urgent intervention, especially as Christmas and New Year approach.

“Though the increment began about a month ago but did not significantly reflect in the price sold to end-users because retail outlets had absorbed the difference believing it would soon normalise.

However, without any sign of imminent supply or pricing crisis, the price in the last one week suddenly skyrocketed, reaching about 90 per cent high. Just a week ago in Lagos and some neighbouring states, 12.5kg of LPG was sold for between N2,600 and N3,000 in retail outlets. It is now sold for between N4,000 and N4500 at retail outlets, owing to sudden hike in the price by tank farm operators.

“If this situation remains unchecked it is capable of undermining the expected development of LPG sector in the country which has been championed by the government and other stakeholders over the years.

“Nigerians especially the low income earners who are beginning to adapt to LPG for both domestic and commercial uses are being subjected to exploitations at the time they are already being confronted with economic hardships.

“The situation is already forcing many users to abandon their cylinders and opt for other sources of cooking energy such as firewood and saw dusk irrespective of the attendant health risks and resultant environmental degradation that results from those alternative energy sources.”

Solomon said LPG retailers had to contend with end-users who often accuse them of being responsible for the increments. Unknown to most of the end-users, LPG retailers are the worst hit as they have been reduced to the status of mere agents toiling day and night to make LPG available to Nigerians often with little or no profits because of the monopoly of a cartel.

“Our union over the years has been decrying what it views as manipulation of the sector by a few privileged individuals and business concerns in Nigeria including some multinationals operating in the oil and gas sector.

“The people behind the business organisations benefiting from this arbitrariness are the same people that have been creating the impression within the government quarters that insufficient retail outlet in Nigeria is the problem militating against the deepening of LPG in the country. This they do to secure approvals and incentives for establishment of retail outlets to the detriment of small and medium size LPG businesses.

They, therefore, neglect the major areas they are expected to concentrate which include LPG production and provision of storage facilities (tank farms).

“If enough production or importation of LPG is made and enough storage facilities provided, LPG would become affordable and accessible to Nigerians because there are hundreds of thousands of business-minded Nigerians who are willing and ready to penetrate even the remotest villages to stimulate LPG usage and also meeting demands.

“Our union is calling on the government and the rest of the stakeholders to urgently intervene in order to restore sanity. There is nowhere in the world that government leaves such a vital sector solely in the hands of a few commercial interests especially where there is apparent case of manipulation.”

Local content ’ll cut unit cost of crude oil production, says Sylva
November 14, 2019

Nigeria’s high production cost per barrel of crude oil, considered one of the highest in the world, is a concern to the Federal Government. In view of this challenge, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Chief Timpre Sylva, has promised that the government would deepen implementation and compliance with local content to reduce the cost of producion. EMEKA UGWUANYI reports.

The Federal Government has pledged to deepen the implementation of the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Development (NOGICD) Act to lower high crude oil production cost, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Chief Timpre Sylva, has said.

He stated this during his first visit to the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board’s (NCDMB) head office in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.

He visited the Board’s new 17-storey headquarters, which is nearing completion, and other project sites.

Emphasising that the government’s primary target in the sector was to significantly reduce the unit cost of producing a barrel of crude oil, Sylva stated that “local contractors tend to be cheaper than expatriates and international contractors and that’s why we want to encourage local content and give more opportunities to local contractors. By extension we will reduce the cost of doing business in the oil and gas industry in Nigeria.

“Local Content is part of cost reduction strategy. That’s why I came here, to encourage more local participation in the activities of the industry.”

The minister also praised the NCDMB for epitomising its mandate by using an indigenous contractor to develop its new headquarters.

He described the edifice as world class and a clear demonstration of the capacity of contractors. Such superlative performance on projects would pave way for the engagement of other local contractors in the oil and gas and construction sectors, he said.

“When you have seen one contractor perform this good, you are encouraged to patronise more local contractors,” he added.

He expressed confidence that the new NCDMB structure will attract a flurry of oil industry activities to Bayelsa State, noting: “The problem we have had over the years was that the region where oil production takes place did not have proper structures to promote lots of events. That’s why you see oil and gas events going to Abuja and Lagos.

But when you have a befitting facility here, going forward, there will be a lot of oil and gas related activities in the Niger Delta.”

Sylva commended the NCDMB for the numerous achievements it had recorded in the implementation of the NOGICD Act.

He said: “I am quite impressed with what they have done in a very short time of existence. The new headquarters building is a testament to that impressive performance and of course, you have the 10 megawatts (Mw) independent power plant. It is a modular plant that can be increased up to 25Mw.”

NCDMB Executive Secretary of NCDMB, Simbi Kesiye Wabote, confirmed that local content implementation lowers the cost of crude oil production, particularly in the long run.

He listed other key elements that contribute to high crude oil production cost in Nigeria to include security and infrastructural challenges as well as protracted contracting cycle.

He noted that several Nigerian oil service companies had executed several projects at costs much lower than their international counterparts, adding that countries such as Brazil, Malaysia and Norway that had practiced local content in their oil sector for decades had long enjoyed significant cost reduction in their per barrel cost.

Wabote explained that local content serves as an opportunity cost for the Federal Government to empower its citizens and get them involved in the activities of the oil and gas industry.

He added that local content guarantees security of supply in the industry, recalling that local service companies and skilled Nigerians personnel ensured that operations of the oil and gas industry continued apace during the height of restiveness in the Niger Delta region a few years ago when most foreign companies and their staff had pulled out.

Providing details on the new NCDMB facility, NCDMB chief reiterated that it will be ready in December 2019 but relocation of staff will be in phases. He stated that the project recorded huge impact on the local community.

According to him, “when we started, we took about 50 youths from the host communities and trained them in carpentry, masonry, laying of tiles and other skills.

Today, those youths are working on the facility and because of the skills they have acquired, the contractor will take them to other projects.

“In terms of Corporate Social Responsibility, we worked with the contractor and built a town hall for the Swali community which we commissioned last year.

Many members of community also supplied sand, granite and other inputs. They have been an integral part of the construction.”

The Executive Secretary also said NCDMB had developed a sustainability plan for the facility, which includes renting out some of the floors to reputable oil and gas organisations. “Currently we have two applications from operating companies,” he added.

Nigerian man bags 3 life sentences plus 76 years in jail for raping and sodomizing girl, 13, in the US

A Nigerian man has been sentenced to three consecutive life sentences plus an additional 76 years for raping and sodomizing a 13-year-old girl in the United States of America.

Adedoja Olaniyi Bah, 32, was convicted on 12 charges including rape, aggravated sodomy, aggravated sexual battery, two counts of child molestation, two counts of aggravated child molestation, false imprisonment, aggravated assault, terroristic threats.

He was found guilty a month ago and was sentenced on Wednesday, November 13, in Douglas County, Georgia, U.S.

Prosecutors revealed how Adedoja spotted the victim on July 15, 2017 then chased her into some woods near the Reserve at Sweetwater Apartments where she lived before punching her, throwing her to the ground and holding her down. He then raped and sodomized her.

During the attack, Bah threatened to kill her if she resisted. The victim frantically ran to a family friend’s apartment for help after the attack, while Bah calmly walked to his vehicle and drove away.

According to Fox5Atlanta, the defense asked the court for mercy and to allow Adedoja to return to his native Nigeria but the judge denied this request.

Judge Adams said: "Mercy is not mine to give you. I’m not the one you should be asking for mercy from."

Deputy Chief Assistant District Attorney Samantha J. Newman told the court during the sentencing hearing: "This man is a predator in every sense of the word, and the only way I know to guarantee that he doesn’t rape another child is to make sure he is never outside of prison again.

"He deserves the sentence he received, and the victim deserves to know that Bah will never, ever, hurt her or anyone else again. Because of this victim’s strength and bravery in testifying, she has ensured the Defendant won’t be able to prey on another woman or child again."

Bah Adedoja was arrested on July 25, 2017, at the age of 30, when Douglas County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the Reserve at Sweetwater Apartments in Austell, Georgia to a reported sexual assault. Bah was arrested and charged with rape, battery and other sexual related charges and later appeared before the Magistrate Judge on July 26, 2017.

He is not a citizen of the United States and was simply visiting the U.S. temporarily when he committed those crimes.

JUST IN: Court dismisses rape allegation against Fatoyinbo, awards N1m against Busola

A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, sitting at Bwari, Abuja has dismissed the sexual assault case filed by Busola Dakolo and exonerated Fatoyinbo.

This came after Fatoyinbo’s legal team filed an Objection and an affidavit at the Court reiterating that Busola’s statements were false and concocted to embarrass, scandalise and ridicule Fatoyinbo.

He averred that from the inception she sought the attention of the media and press, and brought the civil action even while the Police investigation was ongoing. Her false claim were stale and an abuse of judicial process.

The court held that the matter amounts to injustice, and an abuse of judicial process and held that the case is purely sentimental, empty.

The court awarded costs of N1,000,000 against Busola Dakolo and held that it would have been 10 times more but resisted it because there are women with legitimate claims who may approach the court. The Court held that the case carries more of cruelty in them than justice.

Eniola Badmus And Funke Akindele Settle Beef
User Avatar Forum: Other Stories
Posted by: Edoman - 11-14-2019, 03:41 PM - No Replies

It is a well known fact that the relationship between Nollywood Actresses, Funke Akindele and Eniola Badmus have been rocky and shaky in recent times.

The general belief in town then was that both were no longer on speaking terms and that they had parted ways. What further fuelled the rumor was the absence of Funke at Eniola’s grand birthday party.

Well, sharing a photo of Funke Akindele in her Instagram page moments ago, Eniola Badmus wrote

Quote:“CRUSHING ON YOU SO BAD JUST BECAUSE ITS #WCW @funkejenifaakindele YOU’RE A STRONG AND POWERFUL WOMAN……NA ONLY IF WE COMMOT YOUR WAHALA”

https://www.instagram.com/p/B4zwWOCAdpC/?igshid=rr4i8pc7bhbz

Also in an interview Eniola Badmus had with City people last year, she revealed thus about her relationship with Funke Akindele.

“Funke Akindele and I are still friends. We are sisters. Funke Akindele is one person. I love so dearly with my heart, because of who she is. Also, whether we like it or not, we can’t deny the fact that Jennifer blew a lot of us. She gave us that light. It helped a lot of us. We can’t forget the fact that it was Funke’s film that helped many of us.
At some point in a relationship, there will be ups and down. That is life. We can never have 100% relationship. There are some times you people will have misunderstanding atimes or disagree on some issues. Funke, whether good or bad, I can’t fight her. She remains my sister. Funke, whether good or bad, even if she’s fighting me, I can’t fight her, because I rate her so much. She’s up there. She’s big. She’s been a wonderful person to me.

Whether we like it or not, her brand has actually affected my brand in a good way and I am happy with that fact. If we were fighting, she would not have come for my premiere. Funke Akindele coming for my premiere was like a huge surprise to a lot of people because people were saying a lot then”.

Nigeria expecting $400m Abacha loot from U.S., says ICPC boss

NIGERIA is expecting the return of $400 million hidden in the United States by former Head of State, the late General Sani Abacha, Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) Chairman  Prof Bolaji Owasanoye, said on Wednesday.

He said Nigeria also expects compensation after the ongoing Malabu case is decided in Italy.

According to Owasanoye, securing the return of looted funds is not easy because of legal hurdles and huge financial implications.

He said the Abacha loot is hidden in over 12 countries, each with a different legal requirements on asset return.

Prof Owasanoye delivered a keynote address in Lagos at the 42nd Annual Conference of the Nigerian Society of International Law (NSIL).

The theme of the three-day event is: “Is International law at a cross-road?”

Owansanoye said international legal instruments empower Nigeria to demand the return of its stolen assets.

“Nigeria is presently awaiting the return of about $400 million from in the US, which is part of Abacha loot.

“We have $322million returned from Switzerland two years ago as part of the Abacha loot, which is been used for the conditional cash transfer.

“We also recovered $73million from the UK, which was abandoned in England as part of proceeds from Malabu oil transaction.”

Owasanoye said some countries are reluctant to return assets because of what they benefit from it.

For instance, he said the $73million the UK returned was short of $12million, which the country said was withheld as administrative costs.

On the Malabu case, Owasanoye said: “Nigeria is an interested party in that case and is asking for compensation for the corruption that was inflicted on the country by the illegal award of that licence.”

Eni and Shell jointly acquired an oil field from Malabu Oil and Gas, which was owned by a former petroleum minister Dan Etete.

An ongoing case in Milan, Italy alleges that roughly $1.1 billion of the total was siphoned to agents and middlemen.

NSIL President/Edo State Attorney-General, Prof Yinka Omorogbe, said Nigeria must push for the return of more stolen assets for development.

She called for a concerted effort against corruption, which she described as a “threat to global peace”.

Nigeria sticks to 1.7m barrels daily OPEC quota, says NNPC chief

NIGERIA is currently producing between 1.6 million and -1.7 million barrels per day (bpd) of crude oil, the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Roland Ewubare, has said.

Ewubare, who stated this on the margins of an oil conference in the United Arab Emirates on Wednesday, said the country would continue to comply with the Organisation of Petroleum Export Countries’ (OPEC) output cuts.

He said: “The last quota put us at 1.7 million bpd and we are committed to that threshold. Our current production with the cuts is between 1.6 and 1.7 million barrels per day for November.”

He put Nigeria’s output of crude and condensate at two million barrels per day.

According to him, OPEC had granted Nigeria a higher output target under the cartel’s-led deal to limit supply following efforts by Nigeria, Africa’s largest exporter, to tweak the agreement to accommodate its expanding oil industry.

Ewubare said Nigeria started participating in the deal this year, having been granted an exemption from previous OPEC cuts due to militant attacks that reduced the country’s output.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) said growth in global oil demand is expected to slow from 2025 as fuel efficiency improves and the use of electric vehicles increases, but added that consumption is unlikely to peak in the next two decades.

The Paris-based IEA, which advises Western governments on energy policy, said in its annual World Energy Outlook for the period to 2040 that demand growth would continue to increase, although there would be a marked slowdown in the 2030s.

The agency’s central scenario, which incorporates existing energy policies and announced targets, said demand for oil twould rise by around one million barrels per day (bpd) on average every year to 2025, from 97 million bpd in 2018.

Demand is then seen increasing by 0.1 million bpd a year on average during the 2030s to reach 106 million bpd in 2040.

“There is a material slowdown after 2025, but this does not lead to a definitive peak in oil use,” the IEA said, citing increased demand from trucks and the shipping, aviation and petrochemical sectors.

The IEA has been criticised by groups concerned about climate change who say the outlook underplays the speed at which the world could switch to renewable energy and undermines efforts to keep increases in global temperatures within 1.5-2 degrees Celsius.

This year, the IEA renamed its main scenario “Stated Policies”, instead of “New Policies”, to clarify that it reflects current policies. It is one of three scenarios used to show how energy demand could evolve over the next two decades.

This change is an improvement, said Joeri Rogelj of the Grantham Institute at Imperial College London.

However, the IEA’s most ambitious scenario “remains inconsistent with 1.5 C and several aspects of the Paris Agreement and doesn’t present a scientifically consistent narrative”, he added.

The IEA outlook sees primary energy demand growing by a quarter by 2040, with renewable energy accounting for half of the rise and gas for 35 per cent.

The IEA’s central scenario also does not see energy-related carbon dioxide emissions peaking by 2040 due to economic growth and population increases.

“Although emissions are rising, some governments are pushing major policy changes,” IEA Executive Director, Fatih Birol said in Paris.

An expected rise of just over 100 million tonnes a year between 2018 and 2040, although lower than the average rate of increase since 2010 of 350 million tonnes a year, would not be enough of a reduction to curb global temperature rises.

The IEA expects there will be 330 million electric cars on the road by 2040, up from an estimate of 300 million in last year’s outlook. That would displace around 4 million bpd of oil use, it said, compared to the 3.3 million bpd forecast previously.

The largest increases in oil production are seen coming from the United States, the world’s biggest producer, as well as Iraq and Brazil.

U.S. tight crude oil production is seen rising to 11 million bpd in 2035 from 6 million bpd in 2018.

The share of oil production by members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries plus Russia is seen falling to 47% for much of the next decade, a level not seen since the 1980s.

“The oil price required to balance supply and demand in this scenario edges higher to nearly $90 a barrel in 2030 and $103 a barrel in 2040,” the report said of the IEA’s central scenario.

Hate Speech Bill: Lai Mohammed would have died if Jonathan Signed it into Law

"If the death by hanging hate speech law was in place during Jonathan's administration, do you think Lai Mohammed would be alive today?"- Senator Abaribe asks

Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe has joined other Nigerians to reject the death by hanging Hate Speech bill that has passed first reading in the Senate.

Speaking on Channels TV, Senator Abaribe wondered if the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, would be alive if the law was enacted during the Goodluck Jonathan administration. According to Abaribe, Lai Mohammed said so many unprintable things about Jonathan when he was still President and Lai Mohammed's right to express his opinion was not trampled upon.

When asked to comment on the controversial bill, Senate Abaribe responded

Quote:In forming my thoughts, I would want to read out some things for you just to put it in context.
''A government that is unwilling to take responsibility for anything should not be counted upon. A government has repsonsibility to protect its citizens and not engage in blame game. Now this President has finally owned up to his globally acknowledged incompetence. Never in the history of any nation has incompetence and cluelessnes been exhibited by any leader as being exhibited today in this government. This government is running the country aground with a combination of incompetence and corruption. The fact of this government(sic) has nothing to do with ethnicity but a manifestation of incompetence, cluelessness and inferiority complex.

These were the words of Lai Mohammed, the Minister of Information between 2012 and 2014. I bet you that anybody who says this today, they would say it is hate speech. They would say you have called the president incompetent and they will jail you. That is why when you say you have the need to circumscribe people's rights, you should also remember the past. If a hate speech bill which advocates death by hanging was in place between 2012 and 2014 when Lai Mohammed was making these acerbic statements against the Jonathan administration, do you think he will be alive today?

The right to hold an opinion, make an opinion, is an inalienable right of every citizen of Nigeria and when somebody who used to use this, shows up today and now says no you can't do it for what he did in the past, that tells you that it's nothing but intolerance and driving us towards an authoritarian government and I am saying that every Nigerian should wake up to fact that they don't mean well for us'' he said

PDP raises alarm over alleged deployment of Yahaya Bello’s former ADC to INEC ahead of Saturday's governorship election

The People's Democratic Party (PDP) has raised an alarm over the deployment of Governor Yahaya Bello’s former ADC, Usman Musa Shigaba to monitor Saturday’s Governorship election in Kogi State.

In a statement released by the Party's Deputy Director of Public Communication Comrade Austin Oka, Usman was accused of leading attacks on opposition party members in previous elections.

Oka alleged that the deployment of Usman meant that INEC at the national and state level were working towards ensuring Governor Yahaya Bello wins the election.

The PDP who appealed to INEC and the IG of police to rescind the decision to deploy the Kogi governors former security aide, added that it will not condone attempt by INEC and security agencies to cave into the pressure of the ruling party (APC).

The party also warned that the deployment of the police officer linked to the shoot out at its primary election might lead to a breakdown of law and order in Saturday's election.

NDLEA arrests alleged notorious drug dealer 'Agbakwuru' in Imo state

The Imo State command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has confirmed the arrest of Uzochi Agbakwuru, an alleged notorious drug dealer in the state.

A statement issued in Owerri on Wednesday, November 13th by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Uche Sampson, stated that Agbakwuru was arrested on October 18.     Sampson described as “spurious”, a petition by one Frank Agbakwuruibe, urging Governor Emeka Ihedioha to order the “unconditional” release of Agbakwuru by the agency.

He described the suspect, who hails from Umuemeri Ogwu, Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo, as “a notorious drug peddler.” He stated that the suspect had been on NDLEA’s watchlist for over 18 months before his arrest.

Sampson also stated that previous attempts made to arrest him were unsuccessful “because of his strong counter-intelligence network.” According to the statement, 150 grammes of dried weeds confirmed to be cannabis sativa were allegedly found in his possession.

He described the offence as a violation of the provisions of NDLEA Act, hence the resolve by the agency to track him down “by means of tactical decoy and subterfuge.” The NDLEA spokesman said that the suspect was arrested at his residence, where he attempted to escape.

He alleged that the suspect raised false alarm, calling on his criminal associates and sympathisers, who later turned violent in order to obstruct NDLEA’s legitimate duty. Sampson alleged that the sympathisers attacked the agency’s operatives and their operational vehicle with machetes, stones, iron and other dangerous objects. He said that the operatives sustained varying degrees of injuries, while the vehicle was seriously vandalised.

Sampson said that the matter had since been filed before the Federal High Court, Owerri. He said that after the arrest of the suspect, he was given adequate first aid treatment.

Quote:“We wish to condemn the description of the arrest and detention of Agbakwuru, a notorious drug dealer, who has been on our watchlist. It is noteworthy that the suspect later volunteered his statement under caution in which he claimed ownership of the 150 grammes of cannabis sativa found in his possession,” he said.
The NDLEA officer thanked the suspect’s kinsmen for their solidarity and cooperation with the agency during his arrest. He gave assurance that the suspect would continue to enjoy “all the rights relating to care and custody of suspects,” pending his arraignment or transfer to any other detention facility outside the NDLEA.

El-Rufai will never be president of Nigeria - Bishop of Zaria

The Bishop of Zaria, Rt Rev Abiodun Ogunyemi has denounced the Archbishop of Kaduna and the general secretary of the Anglican Consultative Council for paying what he termed as a “humiliating visit” to Governor Nasir El-Rufai to apologise for criticising him over a plan to demolish the St George’s Cathedral in the university town.

Ogunyemi said the apology was all an attempt to make the governor look good in preparation for a possible presidential ambition in 2023. But to Ogunyemi, the apology boiled to nought, according to a statement he published on the church’s website, zariadiocese.org.ng.

Quote:“The governor should know that he will never be president of Nigeria. I speak prophetically as a servant of the living God,” the Bishop of Zaria said.
“Let fake Christians and religious spies placed in our church by a particular religion be aware of the consequences of their actions because heaven is watching. May the Lord expose these spies in our midst on Jesus Name.
In fact their actions now show very clearly that they are working for an interest against the church. The Lord in His mercies will raise help to deliver His church from fake Christians, fake converts and novices,” the bishop said.
The bishops that drew the ire of Ogunyomi are the Most Rev. Ali Buba Lamido, Archbishop of Kaduna Province and the Bishop of Wusasa, and the former Archbishop of Kaduna and current ACC leader, Dr. Josiah Idowu-Fearon and the general secretary of the Anglican Consultative Council.

Ogunyemi said the Anglican leaders have placed loyalty to Muslim politicians over loyalty to the Church of Nigeria.

He singled out Lamido for special venom, accusing him of compromising Christian standards and the truth and he and Idowu-Fearon for ”their intrigues with the government of Mallam Nasir El-Rufai. According to a report written by George Conger in Anglican.ink , the dispute arose over the attempted seizure by the Kaduna State government of St George’s Cathedral in Zaria.

RHAPSODY OF REALITIES

THURSDAY, 1⁴TH NOVEMBER.

IT’S A FORMAT; NOT A PRAYER

After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name (Matthew 6:9).

When Jesus walked the earth, He prayed on several occasions, and His prayers are recorded for us in the Scriptures. His disciples observed that He always had results when He prayed; and so, they said to Him, “…Lord, teach us to pray…” (Luke 11:1).

Thus, He gave them a format for prayer. He said, “After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name” (Matthew 6:9). Many Christians have misconstrued this to be “The Lord’s Prayer.” They insist it’s the prayer Jesus asked us to pray, and that we must pray so.

They further base their argument on Luke’s writing in Luke 11:2, which reads, “And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven….” What they fail to realize, however, is that the Greek word for “say” in the foregoing verse is “lego.” It doesn’t mean “to say something”; rather, it means to ‘systematically lay forth.’ Jesus laid forth a format or pattern for prayer for His disciples. He didn’t say we should quote or recite those words in prayer, which is what many do today.

The real Lord’s Prayer is in John 17; read the entire chapter and you’ll be so inspired. Moreover, this model for prayer that He gave His disciples was before He went to the Cross. He taught them to pray in expectation of the Kingdom of God. At that time, He hadn’t died for the whole world, and the world was still being dominated by another kingdom, which is the kingdom of darkness.

However, being born again, we’ve been delivered from the kingdom of darkness and translated into the Kingdom of God’s dear Son (Colossians 1:12-13). In this kingdom, we have our needs supplied according to His riches in glory. So, today, it doesn’t quite make spiritual sense to recite the words in Luke 11:2-4; it’s not a New Testament prayer. In the New Testament, prayer is based on our new relationship with the Father; a divine fellowship. This is what Jesus made possible. Now we pray through the Spirit and worship in the Spirit. Hallelujah!

PRAYER

Dear heavenly Father, I thank you for the enlightenment of the Scriptures; I’m informed with accurate and precise knowledge of the Word, which enables me to pray the right way. I declare that the nations of the world are coming to the knowledge of the glorious Gospel of Christ, delivering men from the power of darkness into their glorious inheritance in Christ, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

CBN Crashes Treasury Bills Rates To Single Digits
User Avatar Forum: Market Place
Posted by: Edoman - 11-14-2019, 09:24 AM - No Replies

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) crashed average stop rates of treasury bills at the primary market to single-digit; to 8.93% from 10.48%, Business Post can report. As anticipated, the exercise was oversubscribed, as investors staked a total of N555.98 bn on the N125 bn T-bills brought to the market by the apex bank.

CBN had offered investors N4.38 bn worth of 91-day bills, N12.92 bn of 182-day bills and N107.94 bn of 364-day bills. However, when subscriptions were analysed, the bank had N58.43 bn staked on the 3-month instrument, N57.85 bn on the 6-month and N439.70 bn on the 12-month tenor. At the end of the exercise, CBN allotted N4.38 bn of 91-day bills at 7.80%, N12.92 bn of 182-day bills at 9.00% and N107.94 bn of 364-day bills at 10.00%.

When compared with previous session held October 30, 2019, stop rates of the 91-day bill dropped from 9.5%, the 182-day bill from 10.45% and the 364-day bill from 11.50%. Business Post reports that if the demand for treasury bills continue, stop rates would further be lowered by the central bank at the next exercise fixed for November 27, 2019.

As stated in our earlier report, investors will continue to look at the primary market for treasury bills as a result of the recent directive of the CBN on the sale of its OMO bills (READ IT HERE: https://businesspost.ng/economy/rush-for-t-bills-to-weaken-rates-at-wednesdays-pma/). This will continue to drive the rates lower until there is an inevitable need for another hike to trap investors.

Your life is in hands of the court - Judge tells Agba Jalingo, journalist arrested over social media post about Governor Ben Ayade

Judge of the federal high court in Cross River state's capital Calabar, Simon Amobeda has revealed that he told Agba Jalingo, the journalist arrested on charges of disturbance of public peace and treason over his publication and social media posts about Governor Ben Ayade that his life is now in the hands of the court.

Recounting what transpired in court on Tuesday November 12 as Jalingo appeared for trial on Wednesday November 13, Amobeda said he made the statement after the defence counsel Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika walked out during a court session.

The Federal High Court Judge also alleged that the senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN) had a habit of shouting in the court. Amobeda who further disclosed that he was accused of conniving with the prosecution by Olumide-Fusika, added that the case will go on with or without him.

Quote:“In the three times he appeared before the court, the first time he was to bring down the court, the second time he was gentle, the third time yesterday he was shouting on top of his voice. I refuse to be intimidated,” Amobeda said.
Also backing his statement by with the case of Saro-Wiwa, Amobeda said “Late Gani Fawehinmi walked out on the tribunal in Ogoni matter. What happened? The matter went on and Ken Saro-Wiwa was convicted and sentenced to death.”

Olumide-Fusika clashed with the Federal High Court Judge after he granted leave to the prosecution to mask its witnesses; journalists, friends, family and supporters of Jalingo were sent out of the court room as a result of this. Amobeda however insisted that the aggrieved defence counsel should approach the Court of Appeal over the ruling.

Edo: PDP speaks on Pastor Ize-Iyamu, ‘Gov. Obaseki’s N6b offer’

 November 13, 2019

The Peoples Democratic Party in Edo State has said that the exit of its former governorship aspirant in the State, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu from the party would not affect its fortunes.

It said the party remains intact and that Pastor Ize-Iyamu had not officially informed the party hierarchy of his decision to dump the main opposition party.

State Chairman of the PDP, Chief Dan Orbih, told reporters in Benin City on Wednesday that the party leadership just ended a meeting where decisions were taken on how the party would carry out mass mobilisation of the people for next year’s governorship election.

Chief Orbih also denied allegations of agreeing to collect N6 billion from Governor Godwin Obaseki to join the PDP, adding that the party does not collect money from those willing to join.

Orbih described the Edo APC as a disorganized party that lacked the structurè to manage issues for the benefit of the people.

He said the PDP was poised to kick the APC out of power in the state.

His words, “Few years ago when Pastor Ize-Iyamu first left the ACN for the PDP, he said he was coming home. Now that he is going to the APC, he said he is going back home. Is it that he is homeless?

“We are not aware of his leaving. He has not officially informed us. The Edo PDP is intact. The departure of one man will not affect us.”

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Lagos office, Wednesday, arraigned one John Isang and his son, Martins over alleged obtaining of $108,000 under false pretence.

The duo were made to appear before Justice Sherifat Solebo of the Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja.

EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren disclosed this in a statement in Abuja.
Uwujaren affirmed that the duo allegedly obtained the said sum from Ikechukwu Eze on the pretext of providing him a vessel to transport Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) outside the country.

But the defendants, however, pleaded not guilty when the charges were read to them.

One of the counts reads: “That you John Isang, Martins John Isang, David Ola (now at large), Ferdinand Lolo (now at large), Frank Aku (still at large), Agare Celebrate (still at large), Sani Abdulllahi (still at large),Mark Aku (still at large) and Ibor Ferdinand Agbor (still at large) sometimes in August 2018 in Lagos within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court conspired to obtain money from Mr. Ikechukwu Eze by falsely representing to Ikechukwu Eze that you had a vessel to transport 5000 Metric Tons of Automative Gas Oil (AGO) for him from Nigeria to Ghana which pretence you knew was false.”

The other charge read: “That you John Isang, Martins John Isang, David Ola (now at large), Ferdinand Lolo (now at large), Frank Aku (still at large), Agare Celebrate (still at large), Sani Abdulllahi (still at large),Mark Aku (still at large) and Ibor Ferdinand Agbor (still at large) sometimes in September 2018 in Lagos within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court obtained the sum of $108, 000 (One Hundred and Eight Thousand United States Dollars) from Mr. Ikechukwu Eze by falsely representing to Ikechukwu Eze that the money was the cost of hiring a vessel to transport 5000 Metric Tons of Automative Gas Oil (AGO) from Nigeria to Ghana which pretence you knew was false.”

On this premise, the prosecution counsel, C.R. Edozie asked the court for a trial date and an order to remand the defendants in prison pending the outcome of the case.

Also, the defence counsel, H.E. Igbenemo informed the court that he was yet to file and serve bail applications on behalf of his clients because he was briefed about the arraignment the previous day.

He, therefore, prayed the court for a short date to allow the defence file and serve the court and the prosecution with the bail application.

In his ruling, Justice Solebo adjourned the case to December 12, for hearing of bail application and ordered that the defendants be remanded in a Nigerian Correctional Centre.

NASS: PDP reacts to death sentence for hate speech

 November 13, 2019

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the Hate Speech Prohibition Bill currently receiving the attention of the the Senate.

The main opposition party described the bill as savage, repressive, cruel and murderous.

This was contained in a statement on Wednesday by spokesman for the PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan.

The PDP lamented the intents of the bill, particularly its prescription of death penalty for offenders.

“Much as the PDP does not condone hate speech under any guise, our party rejects the bill as unconstitutional, undemocratic and a barbarous design targeted at official extermination of voice of dissent and perceived opponents of the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government.

“The PDP notes that the nation already has enough constitutional provisions and extant laws to safeguard a sane and healthy public expression space and cannot allow such cruel law devised to victimise and persecute the citizens, ostensibly as a regime protection measure.

“Such laws can only find space in Hitler’s Germany, Mussolini’s Italy, Idi Amin’s Uganda and not in this era or in a democratic state such as Nigeria.

“The resurfacing of the bill in the Senate, after Nigerians had vehemently rejected it last year, only points to the incurable desperation of the APC Federal Government to suppress and crush the will of the citizens at all cost.
“The provisions of the bill are deliberately hazy and nebulous with the malicious intention to victimise innocent Nigerians.

“Such obnoxious laws are characteristics of known anti-democratic regimes, as prelude to their suspension or abolition of constitutional provisions to set the stage for totalitarianism.

“Our party holds that, if allowed to pass, the hate speech ‘prohibition’ bill, with its savage provisions, would destroy our democratic order, strip our constitutional provisions, the rights of citizens and usher in a full-blown despotism in Nigeria”, the party added.

The PDP challenged proponents of the bill to start by condemning and setting penalties for those behind the ‘body bag’ comments as well as the ‘baboon and the dog blood’ narrative, which led to bloody unrest and the death of many innocent Nigerians.

The main opposition party cautioned the APC and the Federal Government to retrace their steps and withdraw the noxious bill.

Three men who kidnapped a Lagos monarch, the Oniba of Iba, Oba Yushau Goriola Oseni some years ago have been sentenced to death by the Special Offences Court in Ikeja, Lagos, Nigeria.

The conviction was secured by the Lagos State Government through the Ministry of Justice. In a landmark ruling presided over by Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo of the Special Offences Court in Ikeja on Wednesday, November 13th and handed down in an hour long proceedings, the trial judge found all the accused guilty of all the charges brought against them.

The defendants were charged for the offences of conspiracy, murder, attempted murder, armed robbery and kidnapping contrary to sections 223, 230, 233, 271 (3), 297 (2)and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.  The convicts are, Duba Furejo, alias General Cuba, (who is now paralyzed), Reuben Anthony and Yerin Fresh.

The Prosecution team led by Solicitor General/Permanent Secretary Ministry of Justice, Ms Titilayo Shitta-Bey presented seven witnesses and tendered 13 exhibits which were admitted by the court. The trial judge said she found all the convicts guilty of the charges brought against them.

Quote:According to her, “I believe the offence of conspiracy, attempted murder, armed robbery and kidnapping leveled against the accused. I therefore find them guilty as charged. This is the judgement of the court,” he said.
However, Ms Shitta- Bey argued that maximum sentence commensurate to the offence should be given. She explained, “A heinous crime of kidnapping does not only terrorize the victims, but also the society, as nobody is safe. Consequently a statement should be made that Lagos State has zero tolerance for kidnapping, murder and armed robbery.”
Quote:She gave the orders thus; “For causing the death of Sunday Okanlawon and Joseph Okeke, a security guard, you are sentenced to death. I hereby sentence the offenders to life imprisonment for shooting Olori Abosede Goriola in the abdomen.
Conspiracy to murder; 10 years. Conspiracy to commit kidnap; 10 years. Armed robbery; life imprisonment. Kidnapping; 21 years imprisonment. This is the ruling of the court, sentence to run concurrently,” she said.
