Nigeria Immigration nabs 5 stowaways inside vessel en route Spain






Five stowaways aboard a vessel en route Las Palmas in Spain, have been arrested by the Lagos Seaport Command of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS). 
 
The suspects were discovered in the vessel when it was about 156 nautical miles off Lagos shoreline. 
 
In a statement released by NIS spokesman Sunday James, Comptroller of the Command Olubushola Fashakin cautioned desperate youths from “embarking on “risky adventures”.
 
Nigerian youths were also urged to think twice before embarking on unwarranted travels by all means. The arrested suspects have been handed over to the Port Police Command (PPC)

60,000 ghost workers in FG payroll uncovered by IPPIS – Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Isa Ali Pantami






The Minister of Communication and Digital Economy,  Dr. Isa Ali Pantami has announced that the implementation of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) has uncovered 60,000 ghost workers in Federal government payroll.
 
Pantami disclosed this at the 29th convocation lecture of the Federal University of Technology, Minna in Niger state titled ‘Datification of social economic and security issues in producing and using public and private data in Nigeria.'
 
The Minister who expressed determination of the federal government to set the record straight on corruption in Nigeria, further revealed that N24 billion has been saved since the government began the implementation of the Treasury Single Account (TSA).
 
He also stated that the IPPIS and TSA were introduced by the Federal Government to curb corruption in the country. 

Nigerian musician electrocuted while performing on stage

Tragedy struck in Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Sapaade, Ogun State, after a popular hip hop singer, Alimi Abiodun aka MC Bio was electrocuted while on stage.

The tragic incident which happened penultimate Friday threw the students into mourning.

The Higher National Diploma (HND) 2 Mass Communication student and some unnamed promoters had staged the event to welcome students back to school after the Yuletide holiday.

Trouble however started shortly after he mounted the stage and was trying to re-arrange the microphone’s cable.

It was said that he unknowingly touched a cable which had no insulation and was rushed to a nearby state General Hospital at Isara, where doctors confirmed him dead.

Crestfallen students took to the social media especially Facebook to mourn the deceased artiste, who they described as a warm and happy-go-lucky person.

One of his schoolmates, Emmanuel Oyetola wrote: ‘’ January 16, 2020. That’s how you spoiled 2020 we had waited for years. When it’s time for the star to shine death took u. It’s a week you left us in this lonely world. I hope the angels welcomed u with joy. Rest on soldier …legendary hustler.’’

Another sympathiser, Adedoyin Samuel Oluwatosin, wrote: ‘’No words can qualify this sadness, neither do(sic) any emoji, …rest on Alimi Abiodun BiobAlimi Abiodun BioiAlimi Abiodun Bio.  

Police invaders beat lawyer handling rape case involving ‘big man’s son’ unconscious

Lawless police men in Enugu have invaded the offices of the Women Aid Collective (WACOL), beating a human rights lawyer, Ibangah Goodness Esq., unconscious in connection with a rape case involving the son of an influential Enugu-based surveyor.
Narrating what happened, WACOL Founding Director, Prof. Joy Ngozi Ezeilo (OON), said in a statement issued yesterday, Friday:

“On Monday the 27th day of January 2020, one Miss (Name withheld) a 21 year old lady  made a distress call to Women Aid Collective (WACOL)’s office in Enugu, Enugu State that she was raped that evening  by one Mr. Uchenna James Emenike,  a 22 year old man at Corridor Layout Maryland Enugu. Our legal team considered her report and thought it wise that rape was such a serious criminal matter that should require Police intervention and investigation. 

To that effect, one of the lawyers in our office, Ibangah Goodness Esq., took the victim to Area Command Enugu, Enugu State with a petition informing the Police of the development and requested that the matter be investigated. She handed the victim over to them and was also present when they obtained a statement from her. At that point, it was reasonably expected that the Police had formally taken over investigation of this matter from us.

“The Police later called Ibangah Goodness Esq. requesting that she provides the victim to them as the parents of the suspect had plans of settling the issue with the victim and her family.

 She told them that she had handed over the matter to them and therefore they should source the victim by themselves with the contact details she provided in her statement with them. Rather, the Area commander and some other officers at the station kept calling Ibangah Goodness Esq and trying to intimidate her and coerce her to provide the victim for settlement with the boy’s parent. To our utmost dismay, Yesterday, 30th January, 2020 four Police officers from Area Command Enugu, Enugu stormed our office and still requested that our office should provide the victim for them.

 The legal unit repeated to them that they had already handed over the matter to them and that they should look for the victim themselves using the contact details she provided in her statement at their office and still in their presence tried to contact the victim who said that she was on her way to the station. 

These officers failed to listen but instead began entering all the rooms in the office building and when they saw Ibangah Goodness Esq. who happened to be in a meeting. They mercilessly beat up Ibangah Goodness Esq. to a state of near unconsciousness. They extended the beating to Miss Nneka Okwor, another member of our staff when she made to plead with them to stop beating Goodness. 

These police Officers took the phone of Ibangah Goodness Esq. and confisticated the phone of anyone who dared to take pictures, record or video their hideous acts.

  They also destroyed some WACOL’s office doors in the process. It was such a dastardly beating that at a point Goodness ran into the office toilet to save her dear life, yet the four of them chased her like a hardened criminal into the toilet, dragged her out and continued beating this helpless and unarmed lady who was assisting the Police to curb crimes in the state. And what was her offence? She brought a lady who reported to our office to have been raped to them.

 After beating her to their satisfaction, they whisked her away to their office alongside Ezeani Esq. who was outside when the incident happened. While this was going on, the crowd of people who came to WACOL with their different matters ran away. This happened around 2pm. At Area Command the two lawyers were detained and their two phones collected from them and seized. The officers insisted that the victim must be provided by the lawyers before they would be released.

“On getting to the station the parents of the alleged rapist and the police officers started abusing and maltreating Ibangah Goodness esq. and the other lawyer who was also with her.  Ibangah Goodness told them that she was having breathing difficulty and needed her medical attention as a matter of urgency, they turned a deaf ear to her plea and continued to force her to make a statement and also produce the victim for settlement.

“Around 3:00 pm  Goodness Esq. fainted and collapsed while still in custody and was not rushed to the hospital until after 20 minutes when   Daniel Onyeonagu Esq. one of our Pro Bono Lawyers who saw Police reluctance to provide their own vehicle took her in his car to the National Orthopeadic Hospital, Emergency Unit. Two Police officers accompanied him in his car. Just before they got to the hospital, Goodness Ibangah Esq. became totally unconscious and lifeless. 

It took the timely intervention of the doctors at the hospital who used their Oxygen and other necessary medical equipment to revive her. Immediately they arrived at the hospital and before she was revived, the two police officers who had her in their custody and who accompanied Daniel Onyeonagu Esq. to the hospital thought she had died and ran way.


“They detained Ezeani Esq. who was outside WACOL office when they were beating Goodness Esq. inside our office. She remained in their custody from around 2pm noon till 6:00pm when she was finally released after obtaining a statement from her. Up till now, they have not inquired the state of the lady who they beat up and who fainted while in their custody and who they also guarded to the hospital.

“This is the height of abuse of Police power, harassing and beating up a human rights lawyer working in an office that has set unprecedented records of assisting the Police in curbing crimes in the country. It is a mockery to an office such as ours and is totally unacceptable and must be fully investigated to bring the culprits to book.”

When News Express contacted Enugu Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Daniel Ekea, this afternoon, he confirmed the incident, saying that they would soon issue a statement on the issue.

Patience Jonathan’s cousin arrested for attempted murder of ex-lover






Mr. Victor Oba said to be cousin of former first lady Patience Jonathan, has been arrested by the Bayelsa State Police Command over the attempted murder of his ex-lover, Seigha Atia.
 

The suspect who is reportedly the manager of the former first lady’s hotel 'Aridolf Hotels and Spar', reportedly knocked down the lady with his Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV), damaged her leg beyond treatment and left her for dead. 
 

Recounting how the incident occurred, Atia whose leg will reportedly be amputated said Oba attacked her after she called off their relationship. 
 

 
She told The Nation; 
 

Quote:“On the day of the incident, we had an argument and he called me and asked me to come outside of our gate to get the rest of my things in his car. He said he was driving to our area at Ox-Bow Lake to come and give me my things since I was no longer interested in the relationship.


“He eventually showed up. He came down from his car, reached for the passenger seat, opened the door, brought out two bags and handed them over to me. I opened the bag and I figured out my things weren’t complete, and I told him some of my things were not there and that I would come and pick up the rest of my things.

“At this point, he started screaming saying he would not want to see me close to his house. But I insisted I would come to take other things he did not bring to me.

“At this point, he was already in his car. He started raining abuses on me, calling me unprintable names. I couldn’t take it. So, I responded. The next thing, he drove his car into me with speed. He hit me against our gate, held me there and did not reverse his car despite the fact that I was screaming in pains.

“He later reversed and I fell to the ground and he zoomed off. My neighbours, who watched what happened screamed for help and came to my rescue.

“This relationship lasted for four months. But I decided to quit when I discovered that he was a violent person. He had hit me once, that was when everything started to take a nosedive.

“I can’t walk for now, probably I will never walk with this leg. They would have amputated this leg earlier today. But they referred me to a specialist hospital in Port Harcourt. They want to see whether something could still be done and it must be done very fast before it gets to my knees. 

“I’m devastated, but I’m fine, i will rise above it. I feel bad, I didn’t think someone could go this extreme”.

Quote:“We are still shocked. We cannot believe this is happening at the same time I’m tired. I have not slept, am still exhausted.

“I was in the house when I heard a bang on the gate. I felt it was just someone who normally hits the gate or something, then I heard voices, and I knew my sister went out and I saw her on the floor, blood on her leg, I just ran to her, I was screaming, I just picked her up and luckily she was conscious.

“She told me Victor was responsible for what happened to her. The witnesses around there said he hit her and zoomed off. They had a misunderstanding; he insulted her then she responded, then he hit her, that was what eyewitnesses said.

“I don’t have so much confidence in the Police because of who the guy is. They called us and tried to settle, but we cant accept such settlement because right now my sister is at the verge of having her leg amputated.

“We  want justice. This was an attempted murder, we want justice, we want things legally done the right way”.

Police arrest 12 members of gang that kidnap kids for sale






12 members of a child trafficking gang have been arrested by operatives of the Inspector General of Police Special Intelligence Response Team (IRT). 
 
6 kids were rescued from the suspects following their arrest in differents states including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). 
 
One of the suspects and a mother of two, Ebony stole several kids from their homes in Abia, Enugu and Edo states with her lover Emmanuel Onyekwere and in turn sold them to their buyers some of whom were identified as Blessing Nwankwo, Chioma Nike and one Onwa for N250, 000 and 450,000.
 
The couple were busted after stealing two kids from Tunga Maji and Gwagwa areas of Abuja respectively who they sold to Nike for N300,000 each. 
 
One of the fathers of the missing kids, Olobo filed a complaint with the police, after which the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, directed his operatives at the IRT headed by Deputy Commissioner of Police Abba Kyari, to go after the suspects. 
 
Recounting how the incident occurred, Olobo said Ebony and her husband Emmanuel rented an apartment in the compound he lives in with his family. He said Ebony who got close to his wife after staying in the compound for one week, pretended to be helping her carry their 1-year-old daughter on the day of the incident. It was gathered that the lady who claimed she wanted to plait her hair after a shortwhile, disappeared with the little girl and her lover thereafter. 
 
The Nation reported that when she was arrested with Emmanuel in Asaba, Delta State capital, she blamed joining the child trafficking gang on not acquiring proper education. 
 
Ebony said; 
 

Quote: “I didn’t attend secondary school because my father married two wives and he couldn’t send me to school because he has so many children he couldn’t take care of.

“I was married off to an old man at a very young age  but the old man died two years  into our marriage. We had two children together.  With time, things became difficult for me and my children after the death of my husband. I took my children to my mother in the village and  travelled to Abuja and went into prostitution.

“I spent seven years as a prostitute in Abuja. One of my friends then advised me to relocate to Oba town in Anambra State, deceiving me  that I would make more money doing prostitution in that town.

"I took the advice and relocated but one year into my stay, a girl known as Ogula  from Benue State told me that a nurse told her to look for someone to get her pregnant and whenever she put to bed,  that the child would be taken from her and she would  be paid.


“I told her I can’t do such a despicable thing because I too have two children and I was not ready to get pregnant again. She then asked me to follow her to her village and when we got there, the girl then stole a girl child and gave her  to me. While I was leaving with the child, I was arrested by some security men  and I was taken to prison where I spent six months.  This incident was in 2017.

While in prison, I met one Ada, who had finished serving her term and she gave me her number while she was leaving.  I called her when I was released and she gave me a job at her shop in Umuahia Abia State, where  she sells drinks.   One of her customers, known as Onwa, approached me and said he had contacts of people who could buy children between the ages of one and three.


“I then informed one Chibuzor, who is a brother to Ada, who stole a child and we gave it to Onwa.He took the child away and refused to pay us our money. At that time, I  had already gotten a boyfriend known as Emanuel Onyekwere. Onwa then contacted me  three months later .


“He pleaded for forgiveness and said he would pay me N500,000 for any child between the ages of one and two. My boyfriend,  Onyewkere, then went to his village and stole his sister’s two-year-old  child and we contacted Onwa, but this time, we followed him down to Enugu State, where the child was sold to an old woman driving a Toyota Camry and she  paid us the sum of  N250,000. Onwa warned us against  stealing children on the road because whenever we were   caught, we would be burnt. 

He advised  that we should move  regularly  to  new areas,  rent an apartment and when we see a child, we should steal the child  and leave the area. So, we went to Akuke area of  Enugu and we rented an apartment; we succeeded in stealing two children between the ages of  two and four  from a guy known as Oyenka,  who maltreated me while I worked as a prostitute in Abuja.

“Onyeka was a very rough guy when I knew  him in Abuja and  it was the police who chased him out of Abuja. Unfortunately, I ran into him in Enugu.  He was happy and  introduced me to his wife and we became friends.


“I visit them regularly in their house and I became familiar with their children, Ada and Chinonso. I studied their terrain for three months and when I discovered that the coast was clear, I made away with the children  and sold them to Onwa for N450,000 each.


“Then, Emmanuel and I relocated to Abuja and we rented an apartment at Tungamaji area of the city. We stole a woman’s child who was our neighbour. The woman left her child in my care while she went to the market and I and Emmanuel quickly packed our things and fled with the child. We then sold the child to one Chioma, who we met through Onwa, for the sum of N300,000.  

We then rented another apartment at  Gwagwa area of Abuja. We  stayed for two weeks and I stole a one year-old baby and sold the baby to Chioma for N300,000. We then left Abuja and ran to Ipoba Hill area of Edo State and rented an apartment. There, we stole a child belonging to a sick woman, who could not pay proper attention to her child.


"The child used to come to our own compound to play. So, I stole the child, took her to Chioma, who paid us the sum of N300,000.  “We spent much of this  money on food, clothes and other frivolities.

Before we were arrested, my boyfriend and I had decided to quit but  there was this woman known as Blessing who contacted us and requested for five children between the ages of one and two years.I gave her a bill of N2million and she paid instantly. Since we had decided to quit, Emmanuel and I used the money to rent a two-bedroom flat, furnished it and we removed our sim cards. So, Blessing couldn’t reach us anymore.  My children are between  17 and 16. If they are stolen I will not be happy.” 

Quote:“ I am a tailor. I am not yet married and I didn’t go to school.  It was Ifeoma, who I met where she was working as a prostitute,  who lured me into this business of stealing and selling off children. Things weren’t good for me and my family has no house in the village but she assured me that the business would fetch me money to build a house for my mother. 

Then, I went to my village and stole my sister’s son, Victor, and we sold him to an old woman who accosted us at Holy Ghost  Church in Enugu State.  I pretended I was praying when we got to the church; I didn’t want anyone to notice what we were doing because the boy looked so much like me.  I was paid N250, 000. 


"People knew I was the last person seen with  the child  and they have been calling me to bring their child.  They have even threatened to kill me if I don’t bring back the child.  Onwa  then took me to a native doctor, who prepared fake charms for me that would make my people and he took the N250,000 I was paid for the child.  I then recruited one of my friends known as Aboy when we moved to Enugu State and he stole three children from his village and two from Enugu and we sold them for N900,000. 

I stole a total number of eight children and I am crying because I can’t go to my village and all the money I made I can not to anything with it.  If not for this Ifeoma that got me into this business, I wouldn’t  have been in this mess.”

Quote:“She told me the cost and I couldn’t afford it,  then I contacted one Mummy Idian Emeka, who had approached me earlier for  two children. She said: “After I got the link, I got two children from Ifeoma and  I sold them to Mummy Idian for N800, 000 and I got N200,000 as my share.  Ifeoma also sold four other children to me, which I sold to several people. 

I have returned three and I am yet to get the last one.  I sold two of the four children to one to Mummy Onyiyechi, and they have been returned.  I sold one other  to Mummy Blessing and other one was sold to one  Monica.  Please, have mercy on me.  I will not do it again. All my colleagues in this business have all run away. Please have mercy on me."

Quote:“I have worked in several hospitals and I have a maternity home. I have been trying to get approval and registration for my maternity home for a long time but I couldn’t get it.” “I went into buying and selling of babies through the  wife  of our catcheist, who had no child for a long time and she had been saving money for a child. I contacted Chioma, who brought a girl and the child that was one year old  and we paid her the sum of N550,000; but I took N800,000 from the catcheist’s wife and I made N300,000 as my profit. 


"Later on, Chioma brought Ifeoma to me and told me she (Ifeoma) owned a home in Enugu State and if I knew anyone who needed a child for adoption, I should contact her.

I then contacted some of my relations and friends who were looking for children and they paid me the sum of  N2million for five children, with the promise that I will bring my relatives to Enugu to perfect adoption documents for the children after the payment had been done, but they disappeared when they got the money.  Their phone lines were switched off and I didn’t even know that Ifeoma had links with the first child that was sold to me. It was when I was arrested that I knew that the children were stolen.”

Quote: “ I have four child children  and I  reside in Aba town. I have a friend who is barren and she was looking for a child and I promised to help adopt a child for her  at the welfare. Then, I linked her to Chioma, and she started coming to my house. She told me there was an old woman who had a home where we can adopt children.

"I indicated interest and she brought a child for me and I gave the child  to my sister who needed him and the sum of N550,000 was paid for the child, though I took N650,000 and I made N100,000 profit. That was in 2016.  But in 2017, Chioma called again and said two children, both girls, were available for adoption. I contacted people who had told me that they  needed them and I took the girls and paid Chioma the sum of N550,000 each."

Don’t punish Nigerians for the failure of Buhari’s government - Atiku pleads with Trump on addition of Nigeria to visa ban list






Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has reacted to the addition of Nigeria to US visa ban list alongside 5 other countries. 
 
The former Presidential candidate of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) who expressed sadness over the development, said the ban does not take into account the pro-American sentiments of the Nigerian public even though he understands that the decision was taken due to failure of the Buhari-led administration to share information and to address issues of terrorism. 
 
Atiku urged the US government to consider the history of US-Nigerian relationships and to adopt measures that individually target those in government who have failed in their duties, rather than target the entire Nigerian population.

 
His statement reads; 
 

Quote:“I received with sadness the policy of the government of the United States of America to place Nigeria on its travel ban list. 

“While I understand the reasons given by the Trump administration (the failure of the Muhammadu Buhari led administration to share information and to address issues of terrorism), the ban does not take into account the pro-American sentiments of the Nigerian public and the solidarity previous Nigerian administrations have had with the United States.

“I urge the government of President Donald Trump to consider the history of US-Nigerian relationships.

“Nigeria was one of the few African nations that joined the US-led coalition during Operation Desert Storm between 1990-1991 when the United States championed the liberation of Kuwait. 

“The Trump administration may also consider the pivotal role Nigeria, in partnership with the US, played in bringing peace to Liberia, an American sphere of influence, that now enjoys democracy because Nigerian blood and money paved the way for peace in that nation.

“Nigeria has also consistently voted in support of the United States and her allies at the UN and other multilateral world bodies. This is even as we are perhaps the biggest trading partner that the United States has in Africa, even where we had alternatives.

“Nigerians love the United States and have been a major force for the positive development of that great nation: 77% of all Black doctors in the United States are Nigerians,” Atiku added.

“Nigerians are also the most educated immigrant community in America bar none.

“Surely, the US stands to benefit if it allows open borders with a country like Nigeria that is able to provide skilled, hardworking and dedicated personnel in a two-way traffic.

“The current Nigerian administration may have its deficiencies and deep faults, but the Nigeria people ought not to be punished for their inefficiencies.

“Once again, I call on President Donald Trump to consider adopting measures that individually target those in government who have failed in their duties, rather than target the entire Nigerian population.”

Members of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) are embarking on prayer walk across the country tomorrow to express displeasure at the “gruesome killings of innocent people in the country.”

The action is also to pray for “the government to develop capacity to overcome the criminals troubling the nation.”

Consequently, all parishes of the church have been enjoined to end their service not later than 11am on Sunday to enable members “march round their immediate environment, praying for God’s intervention in the ongoing situation in Nigeria.”

The protests are at the instance of the RCCG General Overseer, Pastor Adejare Adeboye.

The Assistant General Overseer (Admin and Personnel) of the church,Pastor J.F Odesola said in a January 29, 2020 circular to all regions and provinces of the RCCG said: “The Christian Association of Nigeria, the umbrella body for all Christians and Christian organizations in Nigeria, has made a clarion call for prayers and advocacy to all Christians in Nigeria in response to the inhumane acts against Christians in the country.

“The General Overseer has therefore directed that all members of RCCG should participate in this prayer and advocacy with details as stated here under:

Since RCCG is currently on a fasting and praying programme, the prayer focus within this period should be against the gruesome killings of innocent people in the country and prayer for the government to develop the capacity to overcome the criminals troubling the nation.”

Man who specializes in defrauding Nigerians at ATM points bag 1 year imprisonment (photo)






Justice Bello Duwale of the Sokoto State High Court, Sokoto, has sentenced a fraudster, Bashar Umar Abdullahi (a.k.a Abdu Abdullahi and Bashir Abdullahi) to one year in jail without option of fine for stealing N15, 000.00 (Fifteen Thousand Naira) from his victim via a fraudulent transfer at an ATM gallery.
 
The convict specialized on scamming unsuspecting Automated Teller Machine, (ATM) users who run into difficult transactions at ATM galleries.
 
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Sokoto Zonal Office arraigned the convict on September 23, 2019, on amended one-count charge, bordering on cheating and defrauding an unsuspecting victim to the tune of N15, 000.00 at ATM gallery.
 
The charge reads: "That you Bashar Umar Abdullahi (a.k.a Abdu Abdullahi and Bashir Abdullahi) on or about the 29th March 2019 at Sokoto State High Court, within the jurisdiction of the Sokoto State High Court with intend to defraud, did obtain the sum of 15,000,00 (Fifteen Thousand Naira) from one Abubakar Umar Lugga by fraudulently deceiving him and transferred the said sum from his First Bank Account to one Aminu Ahmed’s Bank Account with Eco Bank No:3050002223 using his ATM card when you offered to assist him to check his balance at First Bank Branch, Gusau Road Sokoto, and you thereby committed the offence of cheating, contrary to Section 320 of the Penal Code Law and Punishable under Section 322 of the same Law."
 
 

Man charged with murdering two women found dead in a freezer












A man has been charged with the murders of two women who were found dead in a freezer in London.
 
35-year-old Zahid Younis was reportedly charged with murdering Mihrican Mustafa, 38, and Henriett Szucs, 34, nine months after they were found frozen at a property in Canning Town.

Man bags 12 years in prison for illegal dealing in petroleum business without a licence, vessel forfeited to FG






Justice J. K. Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Port Harcourt, Rivers State on Friday, January 31, 2020 convicted and sentenced Olaniyi Oluwasayo Oladele to 12 years in prison with N100,000 (One Hundred Thousand Naira) option of fine for illegal dealing in petroleum products without appropriate licence.

The EFCC in a statement released said the offence is contrary to Section 1 (17) (a) of the Miscellaneous Offences Act Cap M17 of the Revised Edition (Laws of the Federation of Nigeria) Act 2007 and punishable under Section 1 (18) (a) (i) of the same Act.
 
The convict was prosecuted alongside Sule Ezra and MV Idoma River by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC, Port Harcourt Zonal office on a three-count charge to which he pleaded guilty. He got seven years on count two and five on count three, which run concurrently.
 
The second defendant, Sule Ezra was discharged and acquitted, while the third, M.V Idoma River 101 was ordered to be forfeited to the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
 
The defendant’s journey to prison started in February 5, 2017 when he was arrested alongside six others by officers of the Nigerian Navy at Akpos Jetty, Aboloma in Port Harcourt with the vessel, MV Idoma River 101, laden with about 140,000 liters of adulterated substance, suspected to be illegally refined automotive gas oil, diverted from its approved destination in a mother vessel, Silver Point. T
 
The vessel and crew members were handed over to EFCC for further investigation and possible prosecution.

Schumer called it a 'perfidy, a grand tragedy, one of the worst tragedies that the Senate has ever overcome. America will remember this day, unfortunately, where the Senate did not live up to its responsibilities ... and went along with a sham trial.'

In its petition titled ‘Perversion of Justice: Deliberate Efforts At Truncating Democracy in Nigeria,’ the PDP alleged that Nigeria's democracy is in danger as the judiciary has been compromised by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to pervert justice in its favour. 
 
The PDP who called for a review of the court judgement, accused the Supreme Court of declaring additional votes (beyond the official number of accredited voters) from 388 polling units which was not certified by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). 
 
The petition reads in part; 
 

Quote:“You may recall that our party, the PDP, the leading opposition party in Nigeria, has been raising issues regarding the continuous interference and arm-twisting of the judiciary by the executive arm and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to influence the outcome of election petitions in various courts, annul elections won by our party and transfer victory to the APC.

“Your Excellency, it may have come to your notice that there have been serious protests in various states of our nation threatening the stability of our nation over a recent judgment of the Supreme Court.

“It is instructive to inform you that this perversion of justice has already sparked off protests in various parts of our country and has become a clear threat to peace, unity and stability of our nation and the survival of our democracy.

“We rejected the judgment with clear call for a judicial review and ultimate reversal of the judgment by the Supreme Court.
“Nigerians had been at a shock over the voiding of the lawful election of Ihedioha, who scored 276,404 votes and awarding fictitious votes to declare Hope Uzodimma of the APC, who scored 96, 458 votes as governor of Imo State that the Supreme Court voided. 

"The Supreme Court declared additional votes (beyond the official number of accredited voters) from 388 polling units, not certified by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and donated same to the APC and its candidate to declare them winners. It added that the action of the Justice Tanko-led Supreme Court raises very serious issues about miscarriage of justice against the party and democratic order.

"The same Supreme Court in the most celebrated case of Atiku V Buhari & Ors, decided that for a petitioner to succeed in an allegation of infraction of any provision of the Electoral Act especially one complaining about malpractice, such as wrongful exclusion of votes, the petitioner must call witnesses polling unit by polling unit.

“However in this case, the same Supreme Court was not presented any witness from Uzodinma/APC from the fictitious 388 polling units from where the court allocated votes to him. Does the Supreme Court have powers to formulate and allocate votes as election results?

“The so-called results from the 388 polling units were rightfully rejected, in line with several decisions of the Supreme Court, by the tribunal and Court of Appeal as it was merely dumped on the tribunal in a bag, by a policeman who had no mandate of the police to testify at the tribunal.

“The tribunal did not even open the bag as there was no basis to do so. It is one of the great wonders of the world how the Supreme Court opened the bag, counted the results and added them to only the APC candidate.

“What is more perplexing is the fact that INEC produced a schedule of reasons why results were not produced from the 388 units.

“Indeed, election did not even take place in most of the units for one reason or another, like violence among others and so no result could possibly be obtained from those units. The results were not merely rejected or cancelled by INEC.
“Moreover, your Excellency, nobody is aware of the number of votes scored by each party from the said 388 polling units.

The tribunal or Court of Appeal did not mention or ascribe any figure from the units to any party in their decisions.
“In fact, during the cross examination of the APC candidate, Senator Hope Uzodinma, he could not read any figure from the said results. He said that the figures were not clear. lt therefore beats the imagination where the Supreme Court conjured and manufactured the figures it used in declaring Uzodinma/ APC as duly elected?” the party stated.

“It drew the countries attention to the Supreme Court decision in Buhari v. INEC (2008); which says that “weight can hardly be attached to a document tendered in evidence by a witness who cannot or is not in a position to answer questions on the document. “One of such persons the law identifies is the one who did not make the document. Such a person is adjudged in the eyes of the law as ignorant of the content of the document.

“The question is; can the Supreme Court sit in Abuja on January 14, 2020, to increase the total number of accredited votes in election held in Imo State on March 9, 2019? “Is there any law, which permits the Supreme Court or anyone else for that matter, to unilaterally increase the total accredited votes by any margin after the accreditation and or the election? “Where did the Supreme Court get the numbers to declare Uzodinma/APC from a paltry 96,456 votes over Ihedioha/ PDP votes of 276,404? “Even if all the excess accredited votes of 127,209 manufactured by the Supreme Court were added to Uzodinma/APC it will be 223, 657 votes, still less than Ihedioha’s votes of 276,494 by 42,747 votes,” the party said. According to the PDP, the Supreme Court, as presently constituted under Justice Mohammed Tanko, has lost its credibility and no longer commands the respect and confidence of Nigerians, adding that if the people no longer repose confidence in the Supreme Court, the nation’s democracy, national cohesion and stability were at great risk.

“Yes, Omirin is back at home with his family and he is hale and hearty,” Mikailu said.
“He was questioned by the military over a story he authored concerning activities of the Boko Haram insurgents,” he said.
 
Omirin who joined the Daily Trust in 2011 and reporting from Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, was reportedly whisked away to the Nigerian Army 7 Division Maimalari Cantonment headquarters. The soldiers had earlier stormed the Daily Trust Regional Office twice before invading the NUJ secretariat to arrest the journalist.
 
Witnesses at the Borno State Council of the Nigerian Union of Journalists Press Centre, where the reporter was arrested, said he was picked around 4:40pm when a uniform soldier, armed with a rifle and two others in mufti. The soldiers reportedly invaded the press centre and instantly handcuffed the reporter while he was eating, without any explanation.
 
A source at the NUJ said the soldiers had been engaging Omirin on the phone since last week claiming they wanted to meet him for a change of name advert placement.

Abuja based Pastor and General Overseer of Firehouse Church International Worship Centre Bishop Emmanuel Esezobor has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the publishers of The Nation Newspaper to retract an allegation levelled against him through its online publication of 28th January 2020.
 
 
The story captioned  "DRAMA AS MAN DIES IN COFFIN AFTER ABUJA PASTOR ALLEGEDLY PAID HIM N500,000.00 FOR MIRACLE SCAM" alleged that the man of God paid a sum of N500,000 for a fake miracle that later claimed the life of an unnamed trader in Abuja.
 
In a letter dated 30th January 2020 by his solicitors, G.O.C Owo & Co , Bishop Emmanuel Esezobor demanded the followings as a relief
 
Retraction of the story in its entirety, an apology published in Six National Newspapers including The Nation  Newspaper, the delete of the unsubstantiated story as from its website as well as payment of Two Billion Naira (N2,000,000 only) for the damages to his person and reputation
 
 
Failure to oblige as requested, the Bishop threatens to institute legal action against The Nation Newspaper and its publishers at the expiration of the seven-day ultimatum.
 
 
 
It would be recalled that the same allegation being recircled was first made in 2016 , the Bishop came out to unequivocally deny it.
 
 
 
The story resurfaced again four years after its publication.

Man arrested for chaining and torturing his wives in Katsina (photos)






A middle-aged man simply identified as Samaila, has been arrested by men of the Katsina state police command for chaining his wives, Fatima Salisu and Hadiza Musa, and subjecting them to inhumane treatments in his home in Yannadabaiyye village in the Rimi Local Government Area of the state, for over 10 months.
 
According to the police, Samaila's evil deeds came to light when Hadiza's mother paid them a surprise visit. Not meeting with her daughter, Hadiza's mother pleaded to take away a sewing machine she bought for her daughter who isn't using it. Samaila's refusal led to an argument which degenrated into a fight. Hadiza's mother went on to report the assault to the police at the Rimi Police headquarters. The officers immediately went to effect Samaila's arrest. It was during the arrest that Fatima and Hadiza were found in chains.
 
When interrogated, Fatima said she has been in chains for 10 months while Hadiza came in two weeks ago and was also placed under chains. The women told the police that their husband used electric wires to beat them, cut their nails, shave their pubic hair and used it to form a concoction which he forced them to drink. They told the police that their husband had sex with them whenever he liked in the full glare of the other wife. The women said they had no idea what their husband does for a living but knew he always returned with wads of N500 notes.
 
The spokesman for the command, SP Gambo Isah, confirmed Samaila’s arrest and said the matter is currently being investigated.

Former Edo Commissioner for Justice attacked by gunmen (graphic photo)






Former Edo State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Henry Idajagbon was attacked by gunmen on Thursday January 30. 
 
The gunmen stormed his law chamber located at Siluko Road, near the popular Oliha Market in Benin-city in three vehicles and shattered all items on sight and reportedly fired several shots at the former Commissioner's office. Idajagbon was injured in the attack as a bullet grazed his head.
 
Eyewitnesses alleged that the attack might be connected to the crisis ravaging the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state which has been factionalised with different chairmen championing the cause of Governor Godwin Obaseki and his estranged political godfather who is the National Chairman of the party, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.
 

 
Idajagbon who confirmed the attack said he reported the incident to the nearby Oba Market Police station, where a team of policemen were drafted to assess the extent of the damage done to the building.
 
He said; 
 

Quote: “I was in my office attending to some clients when I heard the echoes of gunshots directed at my office. I immediately ran out. Thank God nobody was injured. The windows were shattered while the building is pockmarked with bullets. However, I have reported the matter to the police.
"In panic, some neighbours who heard the volley of the shots, apparently from pump action rifles ran out of their shops, unlocked and fled for fear of being hit by stray bullets."

Man accused of killing his missing wife 'dies in hospital two days after suicide attempt'








A 52-year-old man who was charged with killing his estranged wife after she went missing has died two days after he attempted suicide. 
 
In a statement by Norm Pattis, the lawyer of Fotis Dulos said his client died just after 5.30pm at Jacobi Medical Center on Thursday in the Bronx, New York.

Mr. Pattis said: "Mr. Dulos was tried and convicted in the court of public opinion. Now he has been executed."

His attorney added: "We remain committed to demonstrating he did not murder Jennifer."

Before his death, the estranged husband of Jennifer Farber Dulos attempted to take his own life inside his garage while awaiting trial for the murder of wife Jennifer Dulos who went missing after dropping her children at school.

The real estate businessman was found in his car inside the garage of his mansion in Farmington, Connecticut, on Tuesday afternoon, having suffered carbon monoxide poisoning.

He was found by Police officers who had gone to check on him as he failed to appear for a court hearing over one of the properties used to secure his $6 million bond.

Officers later found him at his Farmington, Connecticut, house in distress and called for an ambulance. They performed CPR and airlifted him to UConn Heath for treatment of carbon monoxide poisoning before they took him to a specialist medical centre.  He died after two days.

His estranged wife, Jennifer Dulos, a 50-year-old mother of five, disappeared in May 2019 in New Canaan, Connecticut, after she dropped her children off at school. 
 

Investigators found her car near a park not far from her home, but she has not been seen or heard from since, and officials now believe she is dead.
 
She and Fotis Dulos were in the midst of a bitter custody battle before she went missing.
 
 In 2017, Jennifer Farber Dulos moved out to a home in New Canaan and filed for divorce, court records show. She told officials she was afraid of her husband, according to court documents obtained by CNN.

"I know that filing for divorce and filing this motion will enrage him," she said, according to the documents. "I know he will retaliate by trying to harm me in some way."

Fotis Dulos denied making any threats or bullying her, according to court filings.

He and his then-girlfriend, Michelle Troconis, were arrested in June and charged with tampering with or fabricating evidence after investigators found blood stains and evidence of attempts to clean the crime scene, officials said. They pleaded not guilty.

He was arrested on murder and kidnapping charges earlier this month and again pleaded not guilty. 

In arrest affidavits, police said they believe Jennifer was attacked in the garage of her rented property in New Canaan, Connecticut, after taking her kids to school before the killer moved her body in her car, which was found nearby.

During the search for Ms.Jennifer, Police found pools of blood that appear to have been partially mopped up, as well as blood in the car.

Eeleven suspected fraudsters have been arrested by operatives of the Enugu Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Thursday, January 30th 2020.
 

 
One of the fraudster, a female, was arrested at Airport View Estate, Thinkers Corner, Enugu.
 
The arrest, which was the first by the zone in the new year, followed several intelligence report on the ostentatious lifestyles of the suspects.
 

 
On the strength of the intelligence, operatives of the Commission, with duly signed search warrant, raided about four building within the same vicinity where they recovered several mobile phones, lap tops, computers, several MTN Sim packs, a Toyota Venza, Mercedes C350, two Lexus Jeeps, one GLK 350 Benz, two ES350 Lexus, a Mustang 455FA car and other incriminating items.
 
Interim investigation revealed that the suspected female fraudster was discovered to have a software in her phone with an instruction and format used in duping gullible individuals.
 

 
Further analysis is being carried out on items recovered from them and on their persons.
 
The EFCC in its statement said the suspects will all be charged to court as soon as investigation is concluded.

UNICAL suspends 200-level student caught smoking marijuana on campus






The management of University of Calabar (UNICAL) has suspended a 200-level student of the institution who was caught smoking weed (marijuana) on campus. 
 
The 200-level student of the Department of Physics was identified as Uzoagba Chinaemerem and it was gathered that the incident occurred on  27th November, 2019 in Hall 4 of the institution's Male Hostel, 
 
Uzoagba Chinaemerem will reportedly remain on suspension till the Students' Disciplinary Committee concludes its investigation, as disclosed in a letter dated 17 January, 2020 and signed by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Zana Akpagu.

3 sentenced to death by hanging for the 2016 Osun Bank robbery that claimed many lives






Justice Jide Falola of Osun State High Court in Ikirun on Thursday sentenced three men, Nuhu Jimoh, David Ndubisi and Oluwaseun Aderibigbe, to death by hanging for bank robbery.
 
Thirty-two people, including two police personnel and two bank workers, were killed during the exchange of gunfire between the robbers and the police during the robbery that occurred on February 12 , 2016,
 
Delivering judgment, Justice Falola found the men guilty of launching coordinated attacks on the First Bank, Union Bank and Skye Bank, situated on the same street in Ikirun in the Ifelodun Local Government Area of the state and pronounced the death sentence on them.
 

 
The judge said the gun recovered from the convicts during the bank robbery be forfeited to the Nigeria Police, while the money recovered from them be forfeited to Osun Government.
 
The convicts were first arraigned on June 29, 2017, on 10 count charge of conspiracy, armed robbery, murder, illegal possession of firearms and others.
 
The State Counsel, Mr Biodun Badiora said the offences were contrary to Section 6(b), 1(1) & (2)(a) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act, Cap R11 L.F.N, 2004, Section 319 of the Criminal Code Law Cap. 34 Laws of Osun State, 2002, and Section 3 of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act, Cap R11 L.F.N, 2004, respectively.
 
Badiora told the court that the convicts on Feb. 12, 2016 at about 3:30 pm, in a coordinated bank robbery, attacked First Bank, Union Bank and Skye Bank, situated along the same street in Ikirun, simultaneously.
 

 
The prosecution counsel said during the robbery, combined team of policemen from Iragbiji police Division, Ikirun police Patrol Team and Special Anti-robbery Squad, responded to distress call and gun duel ensued between the armed robbers and the policemen at the scene.
 
He said investigations revealed that seven members of armed gang were killed by police at the scene of crime, while some others escaped with gunshots injuries.

He said seven assorted ammunitions including AK-47 gun Israeli and Russian made and N7, 486,300.00 taken from the banks were recovered by the Police.

Badiora said five witnesses were called and 30 exhibits tendered.
 
Defence counsel Sunday Atofarati and Ajibade Omoyajowo, pleaded with the Judge to temper justice with mercy.

THE WORD IS YOUR LIFE


Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever (1 Peter 1:23).

When we say the Christian is born of God, we’re actually saying he’s born of the Word; he’s the Word’s offspring. That’s what we read in our opening verse. The Apostle James stated the same truth in James 1:18, saying, “Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.”

Then Paul took it to a climax and calls us the epistle (Word) of Christ: “Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart” (2 Corinthians 3:3). What does this mean? It means you don’t have a life that’s separate from the Word. This is so because the Word of God is your source, and every living thing must be connected to its source to live.

Man’s body was made from the dust of the ground; so, man has to feed on cultivations from the ground to survive. Man, however, is a spirit, and the spirit of man came from God’s Spirit, and was created with the Word of God.

Therefore, you must continually feed on God’s Word to truly live. The Lord Jesus said in Luke 4:4, “…It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.” Acts 20:32 says, “And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.”

Through the Word, you condition your life for victory every day, such that no matter the circumstances, you’re always triumphant. In Isaiah 55:11, the Lord says, “So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.” Culture and regulate your life with the Word and keep growing from glory to glory.

CONFESSION

Dear Father, I’m yielded to your Word which reflects my true nature, identity, origin and heritage in Christ. I’m the expression of the unseen Christ, the brightness of His glory. As He is, so am I in this world; and as I culture and regulate my mind with the Word, I’m transformed; I experience ever-increasing glory. Hallelujah!

APC crisis: Obaseki has concluded plans to kill Oshiomhole – 14 lawmakers send message to Buhari, Tinubu

Fourteen members-elect of the Edo State House of Assembly, elected on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, in Edo State have reacted to threats by the State Governor, Godwin Obaseki to deal with the National Chairman of the party, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.


The lawmakers accused Obaseki of planning to kill the party Chairman.
Addressing a news conference Thursday in Abuja, the lawmakers urged President Muhammadu Buhari, party leaders and the Inspector General of Police IGP, Muhammed Adamu to call Obaseki to order.

They said that should anything untoward happen to any party chieftain or faithful in the state, the people would never forgive their inaction.

Obaseki had threatened to deal “ruthlessly” with Oshiomhole if the party chairman “does not behave.”
However, the 14 Lawmakers-elect said such threat must not be treated with levity.

The lawmakers said; “We the members-elect of the Edo state House of Assembly this day 30th day of January 2020, intend to use this medium to express our worries about the happenings in Edo State APC and the seeming aloofness of some of our leaders which has created another Emperor in Edo State, in the person of Governor Godwin Obaseki.

“We want to draw the attention of our President, Muhammadu Buhari, the National leader of our Party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the National Working Committee of our Party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), Party leaders and members across the country and indeed all Nigerians to the continuous insults and threat to the life of our National Chairman, Comrade Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole and other party members in Edo state.

“Two days ago, precisely 28th January 2020, Governor Obaseki was on record which was widely circulated on social media and mainstream media, threatening the National Chairman of our Party, Comrade Adams Aliu Oshiomhole.

“It would be recalled that we had persistently drawn the attention of the world to the series of attacks on members of our great party, the All Progressive Congress (APC) across the state on different occasions just because they bear opposing views from that of Governor Godwin Obaseki and the government of the day in Edo. The homes of most leaders of the APC in Edo State have been marked for demolition by governor Obaseki.

“Several petitions were written to the Inspector General of Police from 18th June 2019 after the attack on us at Golden Tulip hotel in Benin City, but nobody has been held responsible for that attack yet.

“We want to believe that because the leaders of our Party across the country have been quiet to call Governor Godwin Obaseki to order, he has been further emboldened to kill everybody due to his desperate ambition for a second term.

“He has recruited a killer squad in Edo State and their mandate is to kill Comrade Oshiomhole and other APC leaders. So he has continued to create a crisis and disrupt public peace.

“We demand that President Mahammadu Buhari, the National leader of the party, Senator Ahmed Bola Tinubu, the governors of the APC governed states call Governor Godwin Obaseki to order as he is known to have set several precedents in our Party that may be detrimental to our great party in the nearest future.

“The Inspector-General of Police should wake up to his responsibility of protecting lives, properties and maintaining public peace in Edo state by standing against infringement on the rights of Edo people. We beg him to advise the Edo CP to be professional in his duty.

“We cannot allow Obaseki to destroy Edo APC because he does not know the sacrifices made by Oshiomhole to keep that party in Edo State. It is clear that Obaseki is heading to another party flowing from the endorsement he has received from PDP leaders including the Governor of Ebonyi State.

“But we are not worried because this same Governor lost his polling unit, ward, LGA and senatorial district to PDP during the Presidential election, so he has no political clout.

“He went to play golf shortly after casting his vote not bothering whether President Buhari won the election or not. But the National Chairman of APC won his entire area for President Buhari. So we appeal to our leaders to call Obaseki to order, he has no monopoly of violence. And if any of our people is killed, we will hold Obaseki and the IGP accountable. Edo people will never forgive them.”

3 Nigerian stowaways who thought they were going to Spain, land in Ghana instead






Officials of Tema Port Authorities in Ghana have arrested 3 Nigerian stowaways who sneaked into the MV Unity vessel they thought was going to Spain at Apapa Port in Nigeria. 
 
The suspects who hoped to arrive Spain in search of greener pastures were identified as Isaac Daniel 32, Stephen Nuta 28 and Kelvin Popoola 26. They were found hiding in a small space behind the vessel’s propeller( fan), after the vessel stopped to discharge some general goods at the Port of Tema. 
 

 
Alcoholic beverages, provisions and a hammer were recovered from the suspects who are now in police custody. 
 
One of the suspects, Isaac Daniels was arrested in 2019 for a similar offense and deported to Nigeria with a $600 package.
