Lawmakers Vote Against Giving Fathers Paternity Leave

Lawmakers vote against giving Fathers Paternity Leave | BellaNaija

The House of Representatives voted to have a bill granting male workers in the country paternity leave thrown out, The Cable reports.

The bill, if passed, would have given fathers in both the private and public sector the option to take paternity leave.

During its second reading on Thursday, Edward Pwajok, a lawmaker from Plateau State argued for the bill, stating that a father’s share poof parenting has increased. He said:

As father’s share of parenting is on the increase, they experience similar challenges with women, such as their jobs and family duties clashing.

Making provision for maternity leave without provision for maternity leave is discriminatory against men.

Another lawmaker Nkem Uzoma-Abonta from Abia State, also said he was for the bill.

Most of the lawmakers, however, described it as unnecessary, with Kingsley Chinda from Rivers stating that it should be thrown out. He said:

What is the spirit behind the labour law? I think that this bill should be thrown out.

Quote:The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disclosed that the commission has perfected arrangements for the deployment of ballot papers printed in Braille to ensure that visually impaired persons vote unaided in the 2019 general elections.

Chairman of the Commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, made the disclosure, on Thursday, during a sensitisation outreach at the University of Abuja Campus on the ongoing civic registration exercise.

The Commission’s boss further noted that the exercise is part of the commission’s effort to make the democratisation exercise all inclusive for the People Living with Disabilities in the country.

He noted that the commission had during the Anambra governorship election started with the provision of magnifying glasses for the albinos, promising that wheel chairs will also be provided for the cripples.

“For the visually impaired, we can provided ballot papers printed in Braille. For the albinos, we have started the use of magnifying glasses in Anambra, and the other phisically challenged people, we will be deploying wheelchairs,” Yakubu said.

The INEC boss assured the university community that registration centres have been opened on the campus and urged them to avail themselves of the opportunity to participate in the exercise.

Confirming that those who registered in 2017 have begun to collect their cards in the first quarter of 2018 ahead of the 2019 general elections, he disclosed that the four million registered in 2017 and another two million registered in 2018, will all collect their PVCs, promising that the 11 million Nigerians that will be registered before 2019 will all collect their pvcs.

“We have opened registration centre at the campus and I want you urge the university community to utilize the opportunity provided to them. Let me reassure that those who registered in 2017 have started collecting their cards in the first quarter of 2018 ahead of the 2019 general elections.

“The four million registered in 2017 and another two million registered in 2018, will all collect their PVCs. The 11 million Nigerians that will be registered before 2019 will all collect their PVCs,” he said.

While fielding questions from the students the INEC chairman told one of the students who claimed he first voted at the age of 12 that the voting age from 18 years and anything less than 18 will be unlawful.

He also told the university community that for now the law only made provision for transfer if one intends to vote elsewhere other than the originally registered, adding that what the person required is to apply to the INEC office in the local government of his new residence.

Celebrities that graced the event which included musicians Tuface Innocent Idibia, Helen Paul and Cobhams Asuquo urged the students to avail themselves of the CVR exercise and ensure that they participate in the 2019 by casting their votes.

A visually impaired and Music Producer, Mr Cobham’s Asuquo had earlier urged INEC to assist people living with disabilities to exercise their franchise in accordance with the secret ballot principle so that he would vote unaided, urging INEC; “to stop underaged voting stressing that the phenomenon is a reality.”

Head of European Union delegation to Nigeria, Mr Ketil Karlson noted that 60 per cent of influence in the Democratic process is determined by the young people but noted that there is a lull in youth participation across the world.

“I appeal for greater participation considering the greater percentage of the youths, both in elective offices and in the election processes in general. I wonder why fewer youth participate. Biggest pockets don’t necessarily win elections but biggest ideas.”

According to Kalson, the EU is in Africa to promote democracy and strengthen democratic institutions.

Kogi APC Crisis: Dead End As Melaye Supporters Announce Boycott Of Congress
User Avatar Forum: Politics
Posted by: Edoman - 05-04-2018, 03:38 PM - No Replies

The crisis rocking the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kogi has taken a different dimension as supporters of embattled Senator Dino Melaye have opted out of the forthcoming congresses.

In a statement signed by Gbenga Olulade and made available to newsmen in Lokoja on Thursday, Melaye alleged that Governor Yahaya Bello has perfected plans to militarize and hijack the entire process.

The boycott is coming after the Audu/Faleke faction announced that it will not participate in the forthcoming party congresses in the state.

“We have it on a good authority that well armed thugs have been mobilized furnished with arms to deal decisively with any perceived members who does not belong to governor Yahaya Bello’s group.

“Dangerous weapons and ammunition in different forms have been arranged for the already warming up thugs who have now been lodged at different locations in Kogi West to unleash violence and manhandle our members and supporters who may attend the APC Ward and Local Government Congresses.

“In swift observance of the above therefore, which poses a great danger to our law abiding and democratic supporters, we therefore, instruct you all, to boycott the charade driven Congresses starting from this weekend.

“Since we don’t intend to endanger the lives of anyone, it is therefore imperative to ensure that all Sen Dino Melaye’s political structure, supporters across Kogi West Senatorial District stay off the already hijacked Congresses.

“We assure you all that the current political gang up against distinguished Sen Dino Melaye, Kogi West shall fail woefully,” he said.

We'll Continue To Arrest, Prosecute Looters Despite No Conviction - VP Osinbajo
User Avatar Forum: Politics
Posted by: Edoman - 05-04-2018, 03:37 PM - No Replies

Quote:Nigeria’s Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, has said that the federal government will continue to make more arrest of suspected looters of the national treasury and put them on trial despite the difficulty in putting them behind bars.

He also said corruption was fighting back as represented in the desperation by some “corrupt politicians” to ensure that President Muhammadu Buhari was pushed out of power.

Mr Osinbajo spoke in Akure on Thursday while launching the National Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises(MSME) in the state.

“We will continue to put them on trial even if they are not thrown into jail yet,” the vice president said.

“We shall continue to arrest those who stole the nation’s money. They said we have not been able to convict anybody, we are not bothered, we shall continue to arrest and prosecute them. Let the case remain in court.

“The corruption is desperately fighting back so that they can come back to into power. God will make it impossible.”
He said those clamouring for clamouring for the exit of the present government were those who want to continue to perpetrate corruption in the country.

According to the vice president, the country should have no difficulty moving forward. He said the government of the All Progressive Congress would continue to do all within its powers to reposition the country.

He said the present government had many developmental projects to point to as part of its achievements, saying the APC had outperformed the previous government of the Peoples Democratic Party which spent 16 years in power.

According to him, the present federal government has earned less than 60 per cent of what the previous government earned, but his party had executed many developmental projects within the last three years.

“We have access to lesser money than the previous administration but what we have been able to do are far more than what they did,” said Mr Osinbajo.

“We are able to achieve this because we are spending what we have for the people. We have spent over N1.3 trillion on infrastructure to better the lives of Nigerians.

“They promised Lagos- Kano rail line, they did not do it. We earned lesser than they had, we are doing it. Look at Lagos Ibadan rail line, they had much money, they did not do it, we are doing it. Look at Lagos -Ibadan Expressway, we are doing it.

“We will continue to spend and invest on people, the difference between us and the previous administration is that we are not interested in stealing public funds and we hold ourselves responsible to account for every money spent in order to move the country forward because we believe this country should not experience any difficulty to move forward.”

Mr Osinbajo pointed out that the federal government had earmarked about N500 billion for the MSMEs across the country but said only N8 billion had been expended on the programme despite the paucity of funds.

He said more than 200,000 volunteers had been absorbed into the N-Power programme and additional 300,000 would soon be employed by the federal government.

In his remarks, the Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, said the MSMEs initiative underscored the determination of the present government in the country to drive the economy towards self reliance.

Mr Akeredolu noted that the MSME clinic had been used as a veritable platform and delivery tool for development.

“Today’s programme further underscores the determination of the Federal Government to drive the country’s economy towards self-reliance, using this platform, as a delivery tool for development,” he said.

“There can be no better demonstration of serious commitment on the part of the Government than this direct involvement at the highest level of authority.”

The governor said the platform was designed for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises to thrive by providing opportunity for them to interact with relevant federal agencies and in the process, obtain practical and on-the-spot solutions to their business challenges.

“This programme anticipates lifting the generality of our people from the shackles of poverty and underdevelopment,” Mr Akeredolu said.

He, however, pledged that the people of the state would reciprocate the gesture of the federal government by ensuring and creating the right environment to support the programme to achieve the set objectives.

Dino Melaye: Asari Dokubo reveals how Buhari, police allegedly tried to kill Senator (Watch Video)

Asari Dokubo, ex-militant leader has alleged that President Muhammadu Buhari has marked Kogi West Senator, Dino Melaye for death.
Dokubo claimed that Buhari arranged with the police to push the lawmaker out of a moving van.

Recall that Melaye was alleged to have jumped off a moving police van in Abuja conveying him to Lokoja to face criminal charges.

However, the ex-militant leader, wondered how the lawmaker could have jumped off the van with security operatives present and the doors locked.

In a video he posted in his Facbook, Dokubo said, “People are happy with what is happening to Dino Melaye, saying he deserves it.

“Yes he does but if Melaye, who was one of the most vociferous and loquacious personalities in Buhari’s campaign that brought this evil on us can be treated this way by throwing him out of a moving vehicle, then it can happen to any one of us.

“Buhari wanted to kill Melaye by throwing him off a bus, if not, how was it possible for Melaye to have jumped off a Hiace bus with police officers.

“In a Hiace bus, there are two seats in the front and four rolls of seats behind. In one of the role Melaye was seating there were armed police men and it was locked, how did Melaye jumped off?

“Was there a transfiguration or a Dino Melaye’s rapture?

“You know he has being singing some religious songs, may be he was in the spirit and was raptured and only to find himself on the ground outside the bus.

“People don’t ask questions, Buhari thinks that because he is the captain of ‘Dundy United’ we all are fans and players of this his club.

“The conclusion we can get from all this was that Dino Melaye was marked to be killed.”

Expect More Increase In Electricity Bill – NERC
User Avatar Forum: Politics
Posted by: Edoman - 05-04-2018, 03:34 PM - No Replies

Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) Chairman Prof. James Momoh yesterday vowed to review the prevailing electricity tariff.

Speaking with reporters after the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola inaugurated him in Abuja, he said the commission would look into the computation of the tariff.

He said: “The tariff is not a challenge you cannot solve. It happened, you learnt something about it last week. You don’t have to relearn the same lesson today.

“You should be able to ask question–what are we going to do tomorrow to avoid the problem?. There is what you call data science in the new thinking of the world, where we collect data, you learn from the information and you predict the future. So if we don’t do that, we are wasting our time. Because you know it is going to rain tomorrow so you get your umbrella. You don’t wait until it rains before you go by umbrella.”

Momoh added: “We have no choice; we have to look at what computes a tariff. Tariff is not a guesswork. There is a calculation you do to get there.”

He said he believed in team work for quick wins, adding that some of the quick wins should be what the commission could do in terms of estimated billings and how to ensure that it gets enough data to convince customers to pay for the power they use.

Momoh said: “If we remain the same, and we remain static, and we are not solving real problem, we will just be doing fire brigade promise. The GenCos will always tell you there is a blackout without knowing why.

“You are going to ask question why. I know why, because I know the Mathematics behind it, I know the Physics behind it. I know also the Economics behind it. If we are able to teach people to know why things go wrong, perhaps, we learn from our mistakes,” he said.

Momoh, who said the industry should anticipate problems, insisted that “we look back, we use lessons of yesterday to solve tomorrow’s problem.”

Earlier, Fashola said observers would admit that power supply has increased since 2015, submitting that “without a doubt, we have increased generation to 7000Mw, increasing the transmission to over 7,000Mw, and increasing the distribution from 2,690 to average of 4,900 or 5,000.”

He said the electricity market has a capacity of 2,000Mw that has been stranded, which the ministry is working to distribute before this year end.

According to him, the NESI has a new stock of 459Mw underway from Azura that has notified him on the completion of its plant and its readiness to commence operation.

Momoh said the sector is expecting another 240Mw from Afam and another 215Mw from Kaduna. Besides, he noted that the market is also expecting power from Kashimbilla, “but the distribution end is where our challenge lies.”

Fashola said the mini-grid regulation has started yielding results, and the ministry is already seeing the impacts in the market.

He said this year, markets such as Suru in Lagos, Sabon Gari in Kano, Ariria in Aba, and some other markets are going to be energised.

Fashola noted that since the completion of the privatisation of the sector, the size of the ministry has shrunk from the previous staff strength of the 50,000 to less than 1,000.

Presidency Hits Obasanjo Over Buhari’s Visit To U.S
User Avatar Forum: Politics
Posted by: Edoman - 05-04-2018, 10:50 AM - No Replies

CONTRARY to the views in some quarters, President Muhammadu Buhari’s visit to the United States (US) was beneficial to the country, the Presidency said yesterday.

The Presidency scored the visit high, saying the President was satisfied with its outcome.

In a statement, Senior Special Assistant (Media and Publicity) Mallam Garba Shehu said the President got all he wanted from the U.S. government.

Although it did not say so, the statement was in response to criticisms of the trip by former President Olusegun Obasanjo and others.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and some individuals are among those that condemned the visit.

In a statement on Wednesday, Obasanjo dismissed the trip, saying: “For whatever the meeting (between President Buhari and U.S. President Donald Trump) was worth, President Buhari again bungled another opportunity to self-redeem.”

But in the statement titled: “Takeaways from the auspicious meeting between Presidents Muhammadu Buhari and Donald Trump,” Shehu said the visit would strengthen ties between both countries.

Shehu said his write up was informed by the position of “the opponents of this administration, who have prayed and prayed very hard that our President in the course of his historic visit to the White House on Monday, April 30, 2018, would stumble badly or come back with nothing.”

He added: “President Buhari, to the disappointment of this group, delivered a calm, brilliant performance. He refused to be provoked and did not get angry at the taunting. He instead turned his attention to the task at hand and at the end, came home satisfied that he got everything he wanted from the US administration.

“The Rose Garden worked out very much for him as a routine engagement, certainly not like the make-or-break meeting as some wanted it to be.”

Shehu went on: “It is also important that records be set straight to counter the mischief of opponents, some of whom have started rendering false narratives of a meeting to which they were neither invited nor in any way aware of its details.

“The meeting of the two leaders happened in three phases. First, the one-on-one in which only the two of them were present. Then they had a working lunch, each leader accompanied by 10 top officials. President Buhari had with him the governors of Ogun and Plateau; the ministers of Foreign Affairs, Justice, Industry, Trade and Investment; the chairpersons of Senate and House of Representatives committees on international relations; the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, NIA; the Chief of Defence Staff and Nigeria’s Ambassador to the United States.

“The US President had more-or-less the same representation, except that the Secretary of State who just got cleared for the job by the Senate hadn’t assumed office, so he was represented by the Deputy Secretary of State.

“President Trump also brought with him the Director of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) which I must emphasise, is significant to Nigeria given the fact that the U.S. remains the largest contributor to the on-going effort to reconstruct the Northeast and resettle its millions of displaced persons.

“The third engagement involving the two leaders was the joint press conference by the leaders, aired live by some major television networks across the world.”

According to Shehu, the two leaders got on very well with each other. They also shared a common respect for each other. Some key remarks made by President Trump on our President sum this up. He said President Buhari ‘is a rare leader’; he said ‘I respect him a lot’ and said our leader had ‘succeeded in cutting down corruption’. He called President Buhari a ‘valued partner’ and a ‘strong democrat’.

On the gains of the meeting, Shehu wrote: “The two parties had agreed before the meeting that discussions will be on three key issues, namely security/counter terrorism, trade, and development of democracy in Nigeria.

“On security, the Nigerian delegation was pleased from the onset that the Trump administration had agreed to the major sale of military equipment to Nigeria. Team Nigeria was equally pleased about the much-increased role of the US in assisting the efforts to defeat terrorism in Nigeria and the Lake Chad region in general.

“The President expressed appreciation for these and requested additional support to counter insurgency.

“On the specific issue of the sale of the 12 Super Tucano A-29 warplanes and weapons to Nigeria to effectively fight terrorism, President Buhari told his American counterpart that we are pleased with this, but want delivery to be fast-tracked, given the security situation in the country.

“Expectedly, President Trump said yes to this, and, additionally promised the sale of helicopters and about just everything President Buhari wanted.

“Still on President Buhari’s meeting with Trump, it is important to explain the context of the remarks by President Trump where he was quoted as saying the U.S is concerned about the murder or killing, as he put it, of Christians. At the press conference, President Trump, towards the end of his remarks, mentioned the protection of ‘innocent civilians of all faiths, including Muslims and Christians’, which reporters left out.”

Shehu said: “In his remarks, the US President neither chided nor talked down on President Buhari. Saying that ‘we will do something about that,’ is a clear expression of willingness to support Nigeria to bring to an end the unwanted killings. This is contrary to the press reporting which jumped on the issue, conveying a wrong impression that President Trump was only concerned about the lives of Christians. He mentioned Muslim lives as well.

”Equally wrong was the hasty condemnation of the U.S. President by some Muslim groups in the country without the benefit of a full view and understanding of what was said and the context in which it was said.

“The President also conveyed the country’s appreciation for the U.S. support for the humanitarian situation in the Northeast, with a contribution of 500 million US Dollars in cash and in-kind contributions, the highest by anyone, through the United Nations and other inter-governmental organisations.

”But the scope of work to be done is larger than anyone had envisaged and Nigeria wanted the US to do more. President Trump didn’t say no, only that he wanted more access to the Nigerian market for their agricultural goods.

“For a country which we assist with USD 1 billion dollars every year, you must do more to open the market to us,” Trump said. These are matters to be debated and resolved.

“This leads us to the next important issue- Trade. Pointedly, President Trump did not mince words when he said: ‘‘President Buhari has also taken several steps to fight corruption and improve the Nigerian business climate. And most of all to me — and again — is ripping down those trade barriers. These measures will make it easier for Nigeria and the United States companies to invest. And we will be investing substantially in Nigeria if they can create that level playing field that we have to very much ask for, and maybe demand.

With the blessing of the two leaders, assets recovery is also getting a major boost. The Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, was directed to sit down with Jeff Sessions, his US counterpart, to have a roadmap for the recovery of USD 500 million of Nigerian stolen assets hidden in the US. They will also finalise on the return of USD 1 million of the Diepreye Alamieyeseigha loot.

“Immediately after the bilateral engagement, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Geoffrey Onyeama and Minister of Justice, Malami, met with their U.S. counterparts. In the months ahead, the Minister for Industry, Trade and Investment, Okechukwu Enelamah, will also meet with his U.S. counterpart, Wilbur Ross.

“When he was asked if Nigeria had succeeded in getting America to buy more of our oil, President Buhari said he did not. We have others buying our oil. Must we sell to a particular buyer?

“This government will smartly work with the current American government, knowing that American interests are not always ours, as a strategic partner on security, anti-corruption economic growth and job creation.”

CBN spokesman, Mr. Isaac Okorafor, said the CBN Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, led CBN officials while PBoC Governor, Dr. Yi Gang, led the Chinese team at the official signing ceremony.

He said the deal was sealed on Friday after over two years of painstaking negotiations by both central banks.
According to the CBN, the transaction, which was valued at Renminbi (RMB) 16 billion, was aimed at providing adequate local currency liquidity to Nigerian and Chinese industrialists and other businesses, thereby reducing the difficulties encountered in the search for third currencies.

Providing more clarity on the deal, a CBN source said just as negotiations on the currency swap were being wrapped up, the central bank appointed FirstBank, Stanbic IBTC, StanChart and Zenith Bank to serve as the settlement banks for businesses and importers from both countries.

She said the reason the four financial institutions were chosen was because StanChart and Stanbic already have operational offices in China, while Zenith and FirstBank have representative offices in Beijing.

However, whereas StanChart and Stanbic can start operations immediately as settlement banks, Zenith and FirstBank will be required to upgrade their representative offices to full operations in China.

“While SCB already has a presence in China through its Standard Chartered Bank (China) Limited, Stanbic has been trading in the country through its affiliate, the Investment and Commercial Bank China (ICBC).

“However, FBN and Zenith Bank were also appointed because they already have representative offices in China.
“So, while SCB and Stanbic can start immediately, it would take FBN and Zenith Bank some time to join the settlement arrangement because they would have to convert their representative offices to operational offices.
“This whole swap agreement would kick off likely before June because we have to operationalise the settlement arrangement with the relevant institutions,” she added.

The settlement banks are expected to handle the trade obligations that would enable an importer in Nigeria, after filling the required documentation, to easily exchange the naira for the Renminbi (RMB) instead of resorting to third currencies such as the U.S. dollar, while the reverse will be the case for importers in China that trade with Nigerian businesses.

She explained further that the currency swap by the two central bank governors was partly facilitated by the improving economic environment in Nigeria.

“As you know, negotiations have been on-going for two years, so yes to some extent, the improvement in foreign reserves and government revenues, drop in the inflation rate, and the uptick in economic activities, played a role in getting the swap with the PCoB.

“But this was not the only reason factored into the negotiations, as there were other bilateral reasons which I am not at liberty to disclose,” she said.

When asked about the impact on the country’s external reserves, the source pointed out that China is Nigeria’s largest trading partner, accounting for about 35 per cent of trade.

However, the National Bureau of Statistics’ (NBS) Fourth Quarter (Q4) 2017 Foreign Trade Statistics put China’s trade with Nigeria at 22 per cent, making it a major trading partner. The total value of trade in Q4 2017 was put at N465.13 billion.

According to the CBN source, the currency swap will play a role in reserves management as pressure from Nigerian importers seeking to source dollars will now dissipate.

“Of course, this will help in terms of management of our reserves. What this means is that pressure on Nigerian importers seeking to source dollars to import goods from China will completely dissipate,” she explained.

Reinforcing the position, the statement from Okorafor Thursday said among other benefits, the agreement is expected to provide naira liquidity to Chinese businesses and provide RMB liquidity to Nigerian businesses respectively, thereby improving the speed, convenience and volume of transactions between the two countries.

“It will also assist both countries in their foreign exchange reserves management, enhance financial stability and promote broader economic cooperation between the two countries.

Mike Ozekhome, the lawyer representing embattled Kogi State senator, Dino Melaye, has opened up on the trial of his client earlier today.

Dino Melaye had on Thursday appeared before a Kogi court over alleged criminal conspiracy.

He was consequently remanded in Police custody till June 11.

Ozekhome, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, while speaking with Premium Times, said the decision of the court was for the Inspector-General of Police to “take adequate care of the defendant.”

“What happened was that the prosecution asked the court to remand him in prison, but the judge refused and rather said the Inspector-General of Police should take care of Mr. Melaye until he fully recovers.”

“The police will have no alternative but to return Mr Melaye to the National Hospital Abuja, especially since hospitals in Kogi State are all on strike”.

As at time of filling report, it is not yet clear if the police will bring the senator back to Abuja or keep him in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital.

A mob action occurred yesterday night at Arthur Eze Avenue in Awka, Anambra state capital as people dealt with a lady for beating her maid aggressively to the point of breaking her head.

According to a report by Charles Obi, the neighbors made up mostly of women who saw her in the act - invaded her home to rescue the little girl of about 7 years of age while punches and whips were given at will.

Some of the angry mob also took the bleeding girl to the shop of the woman's husband to ascertain his level of involvement in such brutality.

It was gathered that the woman's husband fled when informed of his wife's wicked acts.

Gov Ayo Fayose welcoming Nassarawa state governor Alh Tanko Al-Makura who is in Ekiti State to conduct the APC governorship primary election slated for Saturday….

Gov Fayose in his usual sportsmanship manner and politicking devoid of enmity exchanged greetings and gave him a warm reception.

It would be recalled that the immediate past governor of Ekiti and APC governorship aspirant, Dr Kayode Fayemi displayed the height of immaturity in 2014 when he refused to welcome the then President Goodluck Jonathan to Ekiti simply because he was coming to campaign for his opponent.

A statement issued by Public Relations and Protocol Manager, Mr. Funso Aina, on Thursday said the digital mobile operators grew its total revenue for the quarter by 14.4 per cent.

The company, however, did not disclose what the earnings mean in monetary terms. It pledged to release detailed results on May 7.

“Constant currency (organic) service revenue increased by 14.4 per cent and data revenue increased 73.2 per cent year-on-year.”

The statement quoted the Chief Executive Officer, MTN Nigeria, Ferdi Moolman, to have said, “MTN Nigeria delivered a strong performance for the first quarter of 2018, supported by growth in data revenue and increased scale. We also maintained positive momentum in growing our subscriber base and maintaining our network leadership position.”

In the first quarter of 2018, the earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation margin expanded to 41.8 per cent due to well controlled expenses and a stable naira, he added.

The mobile operator reported net additions in the quarter of 2.3 million following on from the two million net additions in the fourth quarter of 2017, which was supported by the increase in the SIM registration footprint.

President Buhari Returns To Abuja After U.S. Trip
User Avatar Forum: Politics
Posted by: Edoman - 05-04-2018, 10:08 AM - No Replies

Quote:President Muhammadu Buhari has returned to the country, following his official visit to the United States.

The President arrived in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory on Thursday, days after he left the country to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump.

Earlier, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, had announced on Twitter that President Buhari would be back in the country later in the day.

The President’s arrival was, however, delayed due to “a technical stopover” he had in London on his way back to Nigeria.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Garba Shehu, had told Channels Television that the President travelled in a smaller aircraft.

He explained that the flight crew travelling with President Buhari decided to break the long journey to refuel and do the routine checks, adding that the procedure was normal.

President Buhari, who had arrived in the U.S. on Sunday, visited the Blair House at Washington D.C. and held a bilateral meeting with President Trump on Monday at the White House.

During the meeting, President Buhari had blamed the killings in some parts of Nigeria by suspected herdsmen on armed men from Libya.

He noted that although the herdsmen crisis has been an age-long challenge in Nigeria, they do not carry guns but only wield sticks and occasionally machetes.

“The Nigerian herders don’t carry anything more than a stick and, occasionally, a machete to cut down foliage and give it to their animals, these ones are carrying AK-47. So, people should not underrate what happened in Libya. 43 years of Gaddafi, people were recruited from the Sahel and trained to shoot and kill,” Buhari had told Trump.

Both leaders, after the meeting, had addressed a press conference where President Trump commended the effort of the Nigerian leader in fighting corruption and terrorism in Africa’s most populous nation.

“Nigeria has a reputation for very massive corruption. I also know that the President (Buhari) has been able to cut that down very substantially. We talked about that, he is working on it and they have made a lot of progress and I think they will continue to make a lot of progress,” Trump had said.

Buhari: "Most Northern Youths Are Uneducated Or School Dropouts"
User Avatar Forum: Politics
Posted by: Edoman - 05-04-2018, 10:05 AM - No Replies

Quote:President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday said most youths in the Northern part of Nigeria are either uneducated or school dropouts.

The president who made this comment while speaking in an interview with the Voice of America earlier to clarify comments he earlier made about Nigerian youths being lazy at a Commonwealth forum in London.‎

“You know Nigeria’s population is now between 180 and 190 million and 60 per cent of this population is youth that is 30 years down ward,” he told VOA.

“You know in the north most youths are uneducated or school dropouts. If not because we had good harvests in the last two farming seasons, the situation would have deteriorated.

“These youths even if they travel out of the north for greener pasture they hardly make it economically, because what they earn as income cannot afford them to meet their basic needs or return home.

“All these explanations I made, they refused to highlight them in their report and you know the media in Nigeria in most cases only do what they like,” Buhari said.

Buhari had come under criticism over his assertion that Nigerian youths want everything for free based on the notion that their nation is an oil-rich country at the Commonwealth Forum.

RHAPSODY OF REALITIES

FRIDAY, 4TH MAY.

Pastor Chris

TOPIC ✨ Pronounce Blessings ✨

And without all contradiction the LESS is blessed of the BETTER (Hebrews 7:7).

In our opening verse, the Greek words translated “less” and “better” help us understand what we’re dealing with: ranks, seniority. It’s actually referring to the less strong, being blessed of the stronger; that is, someone of a higher rank blessing someone of a lower rank. For instance, parents can bless their children. A minister can bless his congregation. In the Old Testament, the priests were asked to bless the congregation of Israel. In the New Testament, we find the same thing.

The Apostle Paul, for example, blessed the churches. In concluding his letter to the Roman Christians, he said, “And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen” (Romans 16:20). Likewise, in his second letter to the Corinthian Church, he blessed them saying, “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen” (2 Corinthians 13:14).

Blessings are conveyed primarily in words, and you can’t bless someone who isn’t already “blessed”; this is a mystery, but also a spiritual reality. You can only bless someone that’s blessed. We read in the Old Testament how God instructed the priests to bless the children of Israel. He said, “…On this wise ye shall bless the children of Israel, saying unto them, The LORD bless thee, and keep thee: The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace” (Numbers 6:23-26).

They were already blessed people, yet every time they came together, the priests would pronounce these benedictions over them to activate the blessings that are already in them. So, as a child of God, learn to pronounce blessings. You’re blessed to bless. Therefore, wake up in the morning, speaking blessings. The Bible says, “Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing” (1 Peter 3:9). Pronounce blessings on your family, work, children, business, ministry, academics, etc., every day.

PRAYER

I’m blessed with the fullness of the blessings of the Gospel of Christ. I’m blessed in the city and in the field; blessed in my going out and coming in. In my path are life and peace, glory, abundance and eternal rejoicing, now and forever, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Further Study:

1 Thessalonians 3:12-13 And the Lord make you to increase and abound in love one toward another, and toward all [men], even as we [do] toward you: 13 To the end he may stablish your hearts unblameable in holiness before God, even our Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all his saints.

Hebrews 13:20-21 Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, 21 Make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is wellpleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom [be] glory for ever and ever. Amen.

‘Degrading and unacceptable’- Falana slams police for arraigning Melaye on stretcher
[Image: Dino-Melaye-4.jpg]

Human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), has slammed the Nigeria Police for arraigning Kogi-West lawmaker, Senator Dino Melaye in court on a stretcher.

Falana said in a statement on Thursday that the degrading and humiliating treatment meted out to Melaye was a violation of his fundamental human right.

The senior advocate said,

Quote:“The arraignment of Senator Dino Melaye on a stretcher in Abuja on Wednesday and Lokoja on Thursday morning is unacceptable in a civilised society.

“It is particularly degrading and humiliating as it violates the fundamental right to the dignity of his person guaranteed by Section 34 of the constitution and Section 7 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015.”

“Even though the Senator has my sympathy, it is indistinguishable that he has only been given a little dose of the humiliating treatment that is daily meted out to the flotsam and jetsam of our unjust society by the Nigeria Police Force and other law enforcement agencies in Nigeria.
He, therefore, called on the National Assembly which has protested against Melaye’s arrest, to use the opportunity to call on the relevant agencies to turn a new leaf.

Jonathan Urges Buhari, Other African Leaders To Pay Attention To Manpower Dev.
User Avatar Forum: Retired Forums. Please Make Your Post Within The 3 Forums In General Discussion
Posted by: Edoman - 05-03-2018, 08:37 PM - No Replies

Former President Jonathan has advised African nations, especially those producing oil and gas, to establish a local content policy as a means of fast-tracking the development of local technology, industrialisation and deepening economic growth on the continent. The ex-President gave this advice on Wednesday in Houston at the 2018 Local Content Conference , taking place on the side-lines of this year’s Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) in Texas the United States.

Jonathan noted that the impact of the local content Act which he signed into law as a President in the year 2010 has brought about significant progress in local capacity utilization in the Nigerian oil and gas industry. Encouraging other African nations to embrace similar initiative, he said: “I strongly recommend the local content policy for all oil and gas producing African nations because of its in-country positive impact on the development of local technology, employment generation and capacity to promote value addition, industrialisation and overall expansion of the economy.

A statement issued by his media adviser Mr. Ikechukwu Eze said that the former President further described local content policy as “the missing link in Africa’s search for viable processes and procedures that would strengthen the continent’s economy across strategic value chains.”
Jonathan also urged African leaders to prioritise education and manpower development in order to produce the required workforce that would galvanise industrialisation.
According to him, “African leaders must pay special attention to manpower development through quality education, training and research in areas of need to give local content through quality Industrialization, a great push. For Africa to truly develop in a sustainable manner, leaders must make conscious efforts to ensure that the education curricula of various countries are radically redesigned to produce skills relevant to the economic needs of the 21st century.”
He said also that “Africa needs to build competences and cultivate knowledgeable manpower that would revolutionize the continent’s technological advancement. That way, we can control the processes of exploration and exploitation of resources across the entire value chain of the petroleum industry and other sectors of the economy.”
Speaking further on the gains of the local content policy to Nigeria, the former President stated that its successful implementation has improved local capacity building for upstream and downstream operations and greatly boosted the push for industrialization in the country.
He said further: “I believe that Nigeria is utilising the increased application of the local content Act in its oil and gas industry to stimulate investments that will positively transform other sectors of its economy, and create more jobs for the unemployed. I am aware that the mileage already covered and successes recorded in the implementation of the Act in less than a decade have attracted local and international commendations. It has also excited the interest of some African countries that are already soliciting for the Nigerian content policy as a guide.
“By its nature, the local content policy was designed to stimulate local production and industrialization by leveraging linkages in the petroleum industry and other sectors of the economy to boost employment and production. I will say that the local content Act has galvanised and transformed the entire oil and gas industry in Nigeria into a very vibrant sector with enhanced capacities in technological development, interventions and innovations. I believe that the local skills, capacities and creativity developed for the oil industry can easily be adapted in other sectors of the economy such as ICT, agriculture, transportation, power, health and overall manufacturing.
“We have got to the point where we can safely say that the oil and gas sector in Nigeria decisively forms the pivot for the acceleration of the country’s industrial growth. I believe that with consistency and unwavering commitment in the implementation of the law, the industry will continue to grow and more values can be achieved in the economy.”

‘herdsmen Will Kill Them’ – Reno Omokri Blasts Buhari
User Avatar Forum: Retired Forums. Please Make Your Post Within The 3 Forums In General Discussion
Posted by: Edoman - 05-03-2018, 08:29 PM - No Replies

Reno Omokri, a former presidential aide, has slammed President Muhammadu Buhari for saying Nigerian youths should seize opportunities in agriculture to uplift their standards of living.

Recall that the President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, in a statement in Abuja on Tuesday, said Buhari made the call at a meeting with the Chief Executive Officers of six American agricultural companies and their Nigerian counterparts in Washington DC.

He said, “Our youths, the ones who have gone to school and even those that have not, should go to the farm, to earn respect for themselves.

“Agriculture is providing jobs for millions of our citizens and we are doing well towards the attainment of food security and jobs.

“The media may not appreciate the work we are doing but we will shock them by the success we are recording.’’

However, reacting through his Twitter handle on Wednesday, Omokri said Buhari was a clueless President for asking Nigerian youths to go and farm to earn his respect.

He wrote: “President Buhari asked Nigerian youths to go to the farm to earn his respect.

“When they go to farm and are killed by killer herdsmen, is it his condolence message they will earn? What a clueless President! Youths are not farming because of laziness. They are afraid of herdsmen!”.

Buhari In ‘Technical Stopover’ In London - Presidency Says
User Avatar Forum: Politics
Posted by: Edoman - 05-03-2018, 08:27 PM - No Replies

Olalekan Adetayo, Abuja

President Muhammadu Buhari is currently in London, United Kingdom.

The Presidency, however, attributed his presence in the British capital to what it called “technical stopover.”

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said this in an interview with our correspondent on the telephone on Thursday (today).

Buhari, who travelled to the United States for a meeting with President Donald Trump, had left Washington, D.C. on Tuesday after the Monday meeting.

As of the time of filing this report, the President has yet to return to Nigeria.

When contacted on the matter, Shehu, who was on Buhari’s delegation to US said, “They had a technical stopover in London. I am sure if you keep your ears to the ground, you will hear of his arrival soon.”

The presidential spokesman did not give details of the “technical stopover” but insisted it’s not something to worry about.

Our correspondent however learnt that Buhari’s scheduled trip to his hometown, Daura in Katsina State, might have been cancelled due to the delay in his arrival back in the country.

The President has his doctors who he has been consulting for years based in London.

Buhari, in 2017, spent months in the British capital attending to his health.

He had, on arrival after one of such medical trips, said he had never been that sick in his life.

"If Anything Happens To Dino Melaye" – Dogara Warns Police

Posted by: Edoman - 05-03-2018, 06:19 PM - No Replies

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Yakubu Dogara, has urged the police to prioritize the health and safety of Sen. Dino Melaye before prosecution.

Dogara made the call at the plenary on Thursday in Abuja after a personal explanation was raised by Rep. Sunday Karimi (Kogi-PDP) drawing the attention of the House to Dino’s plight.

The senator is currently facing a seven-count charge of criminal conspiracy and unlawful possession of firearms in Kogi State.

The helmsman of the green chambers, however, said that anyone who committed any offence must face the law.

The speaker said he had not seen any country where anybody had been arraigned in court on stretchers.

“I have not seen in any country where someone is arraigned in court on stretchers when he or she is not fit to plead guilty or not guilty.

“If anything happens to him, (Dino) the responsibility will be on the security agency,” he said.

Earlier, speaking under personal explanation, Karimi said in the process of arresting and transporting Dino from Abuja to Lokoja by the police, the lawmaker was involved in an accident and was hospitalised.

Karimi said that he counted no fewer than 36 policemen guarding the hospital where Dino was receiving treatment.

He said Dino, who had yet to fully recover, was being tried while still on stretcher.

According to him, Dino is being persecuted for his political believe and what is happening to him can happen to any of us.

“I appeal to the house to look at the issue and make sure due process is followed,” he said. (NAN)

Codeine Abuse Is The Handiwork Of A Hopeless Economy – Shehu Sani

p://www.titopeblog.com/2018/05/codeine-abuse-is-handiwork-of-hopeless.html

Shehu Sani, the Senator representing Kaduna Central has said that the state of hopelessness in the economy is responsible for the abuse of codeine by Nigerians.

The lawmaker said this in reaction to an investigatory video by BBC recorded in Nigeria showing abuse of codeine by youths and its consequences.

Titope Blog reports that the Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, on Tuesday directed the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, to ban with immediate effect further issuance of permits for the importation of codeine as active pharmaceutical ingredient for cough preparations.

Adewole said the directive became necessary due to the gross abuse of Codeine usage in the country.

However, reacting through his Twitter handle, Shehu Sani said creation of a stabilised economy and system to give hope to the youths will hinder them from finding solace in Codeine.

He urged the federal government to promote the economy, hence, give meaning to their lives.

Sani wrote, “Codeine is an opium that symbolizes our social dislocation and societal collapse. What we have is a system that has over the years ostracized and mentally deformed a generation, dispatching them to seek solace in aphrodisiac .

“Codeine is a problem and the bigger problem remains a corrosive socio economic order that created a state of hopelessness. We must continue to work hard in order to change it so as to give meaning to the lives of our young ones.”

APC Chair: Oyegun, Supporters Vow To Fight On, Won't Step Aside
User Avatar Forum: Retired Forums. Please Make Your Post Within The 3 Forums In General Discussion
Posted by: Edoman - 05-03-2018, 05:53 PM - No Replies

Despite the endorsement of Adams Oshiomhole by President Muhammadu Buhari for the position of national chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, the incumbent national chairman and his supporters are resolved to fight the battle to a logical conclusion.

Though many thought Odigie-Oyegun will withdraw from the race following the open support of Buhari for Oshiomhole, DAILY INDEPENDENT gathered that he was emboldened by his supporters to continue his campaign while they strategise to ensure he secures another term in office.

Leading the pack are the pro-Odigie-Oyegun governors: Governors Bindo Jibrilla of Adamawa; Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar of Bauchi; Samuel Ortom, Benue; Badaru Abubakar, Jigawa; Nasir el-Rufai, Kaduna; Aminu Masari, Katsina; Atiku Bagudu, Kebbi; Yahaya Bello, Kogi; Abdulfatah Ahmed, Kwara; Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, Nasarawa; Abubakar Sani Bello, Niger; Ibikunle Amosun, Ogun; Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, Ondo; Simon Lalong, Plateau; Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, Sokoto and Ibrahim Geidam, Yobe.

Among the governors, DAILY INDEPENDENT gathered that Akeredolu and Bello are resolute in their quest to ensure that Odigie-Oyegun retains the seat.

Also included in the plot to return Odigie-Oyegun are some appointees of President Buhari led by Rotimi Amaechi, Minister of Transportation.

A member of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) who spoke on condition of anonymity said as part of the strategy, a meeting has been fixed at Amaechi’s residence Wednesday evening. Though he could not provide further details on the meeting, he said it is part of the strategy to ensure that Odigie-Oyegun is returned.

He informed that while the president’s support for Oshiomhole could not be brushed aside given his position as the national leader of the party, many of the stakeholders are not in support of the move because they are not comfortable with Oshiomhole’s leadership style.

“Odigie-Oyegun’s supporters are not giving up. Those flying the kite that he will withdraw from the race are making a grave mistake. The man himself (Odigie-Oyegun) has not publicly said he is withdrawing from the race and from what I know, his supporters are working round the clock to ensure that he returns. In fact, they have scheduled a meeting tonight at the residence of Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi.

“Many of those backing Odigie-Oyegun are not comfortable with Oshiomhole as the national chairman and they are determined to ensure that he did not occupy that position. They believe they can influence the delegates to do their bidding at the convention. We will see what plays out during the coming days”, he said.

In a related development, the Lagos State chapter of the APC said on Wednesday that it had no preferred candidate for the party’s national chairmanship position.

A member of the chapter’s Elders’ Forum, Prince Tajudeen Olusi, made the statement in Lagos.

Name Those Who Allegedly Stole $3bn Under Jonathan - PDP Challenge Osinbajo
User Avatar Forum: Politics
Posted by: Edoman - 05-03-2018, 05:42 PM - No Replies

Quote:The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has challenged Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, to name the three persons he claimed allegedly stole $3 billion during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

The PDP, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, said it expects Professor Osinbajo to report those involved to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission ( EFCC), if they truly exist.

The party said it is improper for the occupant of the exalted office of the vice president to engage in smear campaign, making unsubstantiated statements to score cheap political points.

“Vice president, Osinbajo, is a professor of Law and ought to know that patriotism demands that he should not make unsubstantiated claims but to place the names of such Nigerians in public.

“We, therefore, urge vice president, Osinbajo, not to join President Muhammadu Buhari in de-marketing our dear nation, in a bid to score cheap political points and divert public attention from their failure in governance.

“Indeed, we had expected the vice president to show leadership by naming those he claimed stole $3 billion and making moves to ensure that the amount is recovered, instead of bandying figures at public events,” the opposition party stated.

Besides, the PDP said Nigerians want Osinbajo to address the issue of alleged colossal corruption in Buhari’s administration, especially in the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), which he oversees, that is currently being investigated by the House of Representatives, in connection “to the handling of N18 billion emergency intervention fund.”

Meanwhile, the party has also condemned the killing of 60 worshippers in twin blasts at a mosque and market in Mubi, Adamawa state, on Tuesday, by insurgents.

The party equally expressed shock over the murder of a Special Adviser to Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, Mr. Ebikimi Okoringa by gunmen, on Monday.
The PDP said Nigerians are worried by the endless killings of Nigerians under the the All Progressives Congress(APC)-led Federal Government.

“It is painful that while president Buhari and the APC federal government are busy misleading Nigerians and the world with false claims of having decimated insurgents, the same insurgents are having a field day pillaging our citizens in various parts of the country.

“We hold that if the incompetent APC administration had not continued to issue false security assurances, these compatriots would not have believed a lie and dropped their guards when they would have adopted more precautionary measures; only to be slaughtered as soft targets by insurgents.

“The PDP, therefore, charges our security agencies to insulate themselves from the APC propaganda and take urgent steps to tackle the security situation in the country. Nigerians look up to them now, more than ever before, to deploy their patriotism and professional skills to ensure the safety of lives in our country,” the PDP stated.

Top 10 Tips - Become a Better Cook
User Avatar Forum: Food

Everyone wants to become better in any skill they have. Cooking is no exception. Even if you think you are hopeless in the kitchen; like everything else, practice and increasing your knowledge makes perfect. Just relax and pretend that you are playing with the ingredients and you will realize that cooking is not such a daunting task. The following are All Nigerian Food Recipes' top 10 tips to becoming a better cook.

1. Add to what you know
Constantly increasing your knowledge of cooking is important because you already know the basics of cooking and you are interested in improving your skills. Search for recipes on the web and in cookery books, read them through even if it is a recipe for a meal you think you have perfected. With Nigerian food recipes, and any other world recipe, there are often many ways to cook a meal and achieve the same results. So there's always something new to learn.
When you eat a familiar meal and you notice an improvement in the taste, it is good to ask the cook what he/she did to achieve that.

2. Timing
This is one of the top tips of how to become a better cook because you may know all the ingredients you need, spend a lot of money on premium ingredients but get the timing wrong and all the money and time spent goes to nothing. Knowing the right time to add certain ingredients goes a long way to making your food taste better.

3. Organisation
Some things need to be done before you even light up the stove for example; you can take your time and cut up every vegetable that needs to be chopped, place them in separate bowls and set aside. This is so that once it is time to add these, it will be a matter of putting them into the pot rather than hurriedly washing and cutting them up just before you add them.

4. Attention to detail
Watch out for how your cooking can benefit from low, medium or high heat. Sometimes, you need high heat to get that white rice to dry quicker as medium heat will cause it to become soggy.

5. Have the basic tools you need
Something as basic as a chopping board is essential in the kitchen. It will help you cut the carrots or green bell pepper better as opposed to doing these without. It may be worth investing in that expensive blender because it gives you the best tomato puree etc.

6. Plan Ahead
It is a good idea to plan what you want to cook well ahead of time. This is so that you can be sure to buy all the necessary ingredients for preparing the recipe.

7. Choose your time carefully
It is best to cook when you are sure you will have minimal distraction. Do not plan to cook when your favourite TV programme is on air or on a day you brought some work home. The less you are distracted from your cooking, the better attention you will pay to the preparation of the meal. This way, there will be no burnt/overcooked meals later!

8. Give yourself plenty of time
Always give yourself plenty of time to cook your chosen recipe. With practice, you can estimate the time it will take to cook, say, a pot of fried rice before it is meal time. This way, you will not need to rush through your cooking. Also, if you invited friends over for a meal, you do not want to be dashing to and from the kitchen when you should be talking with your visitors.

9. Be adventurous in the kitchen
Feel free to throw a few vegetables in the frying pan to make your very own gravy. You can start by using your favourite vegetables, then eliminate and substitute later if you feel that some of them do not fit in the mix due to their taste or texture. Soon, you will be wowing your friends and family with a recipe that started as a concoction! Remember, it is your kitchen so play with the ingredients as much as you want.

10. Often does it
Practice, they say, makes perfect. The more often you cook, the more you learn new and better ways of the art of cooking. The frequency of cooking also boosts your confidence in the kitchen. Let's say you cook Jollof Rice every weekend, you will be perfecting on the different stages of the cooking such as parboiling the rice more than if you cook it only once every 2 months.
We hope that at least one of the above tips will help you in your quest to become a better cook. Happy Cooking!

Kanye West Tries to Explain That Slavery Comment
User Avatar Forum: TV
Posted by: Gimbiya - 05-03-2018, 04:10 PM - No Replies

Kanye West may have finally crossed a line.
The rapper has been spewing nonsense for weeks now, ever since announcing that he's releasing new music in the summer of 2018.

When he expressed heartfelt affection for Donald Trump, Twitter users shook their head.

But when he wondered why black people were enslaved for "400 years" while speaking to TMZ and then said the answer had to be because they WANTED to be, well...

... Twitter users nearly broke their computer screens.

Scroll down to see a few responses to Kanye's opinion and then to see how Kanye is attempting to explain himself:

1. Is He Sick or Is He Smart?

This is the ongoing debate regarding Kanye: does he need mental help... or does he NOT need a marketing team because he's so good by himself as publicizing his music and his brand?

2. Getting Schooled

Kanye has been irritating beyond all belief. But maybe it was all worth it, just to see him getting yelled at by a TMZ employee.

3. Down with Kanye

This isn't funny anymore, people. This is simply dangerous and dumb. (We agree.)

4. Sorry, Kanye Lovers

It's time to let go. Embrace another rapper. Please stop trying to defend this man or justify his behavior.

5. Okay, So Let Me Explain...

Kanye actually did try to walk back this one remark... kind of, that is. He at least acknowledges that he wasn't entirely clear in how he phrased himself.

6. It Was a Numbers Game!

No, Kanye, it really wasn't. Go read an actual book and see what happened to slaves who tried to rise up.

7. Their Tongues Were LITERALLY Cut Out
[Image: kanye6.png]

This is what Kanye doesn't understand. Of course his tongue will never be cut out. He can say whatever he wants and then go about his mega rich and famous life.

8. Yes, This Happened

And it worked, which is understandable. We wish you had a coherent point, Kanye.

9. Yes, They Can!
And do you know who is trying to silence you and your people, Kanye? That President you adore, Donald Trump.

10. No.

Just... no. How are you compare yourself to Harriet Tubman?!? You have no clue, dude.
11. Okay, How Would You Update It?

Feel free to do some research and introduce some actual idea, not spew uneducated nonsense.

12. It's All About Free Thought

Kanye, listen: you are free to think freely. What many African-Americans have a problem with is that they are not free to walk down the street without being harassed by policemen.

13. Nope, Wrong Again
[Image: kanye12.png]

You're being attacked for disrespecting an entire culture and being a total moron.

Kanye West Says Slavery Was a Choice, Accidentally Spawns a Meme..............
User Avatar Forum: TV
Posted by: Gimbiya - 05-03-2018, 03:58 PM - No Replies

21. A couple of people imagined their ancestors making this choice
[Image: kanye-slavery-choice-meme-21-ghana-to-jamaica-chose.png]
Yes, people can directly trace how far back their ancestry goes to slavery. It's not as far as you'd think.

22. This person had the same idea
[Image: kanye-slavery-choice-meme-22-ghana-to-ba...-chose.png]
This version of the past is what plenty of people would love for others to believe.

23. Some of these are wild
[Image: kanye-slavery-choice-meme-23-travelocity.png]
Anachronisms make for great humor.

24. You'd get weekends off, right?
[Image: kanye-slavery-choice-meme-24-weekend-fun.png]

Again, actual slaves had zero of the "luxuries" for which modern, voluntary workers have fought.

25. We guess that you make your own schedule
[Image: kanye-slavery-choice-meme-25-your-own-schedule.png]
We don't know enough about agriculture to say whether these months would work for cotton, but that's not the point.

26. If it's a choice, you can leave
[Image: kanye-slavery-choice-meme-26-whos-gonna-check-me.png]
In real life, there were bounty hunters and even regular law enforcement who would hunt down escaped slaves. Heartbreaking.

27. More anachronisms
[Image: kanye-slavery-choice-meme-27-office-emails.png]
Rare to see Family Guy used in a funny context

28. And, of course, sick days
[Image: kanye-slavery-choice-meme-28-out-sick.png]
The woman who went viral for "ain't nobody got time for that" later got clean and turned her life around.

29. Hard pass
[Image: kanye-slavery-choice-meme-29-no-contract-extension.png]
Hard to see someone signing up for more. Or, you know, any.

30. This Big Brother meme again
[Image: kanye-slavery-choice-meme-30-free-ship-hispaniola.png]
Hispaniola is a larger island in the Caribbean.

31. Another slur warning
[Image: kanye-slavery-choice-meme-31-cotton-or-fired.png]
Bye!!

32. And the hits keep coming
[Image: kanye-slavery-choice-meme-32-hard-pass.png]
Another hard pass.

33. A classic reference.
[Image: kanye-slavery-choice-meme-33-kunta-kinte.png]
Kunta Kinte was LeVar Burton's famous character from Roots. He was renamed "Toby" to erase his personhood and origins.

34. A real dilemma
[Image: kanye-slavery-choice-meme-34-revolt-prom...uandry.png]
Sadly, by pitting slaves against each other, slave-owners were sometimes able to make real slaves feel similarly conflicted about their loyalties. It's psychological warfare.

35. Oh no!!
[Image: kanye-slavery-choice-meme-35-rachel-dolezal.png]
That is Rachel Dolezal. She is not black.

36. If only people had known that they had a choice!
[Image: kanye-slavery-choice-meme-36-kanye-enlightenment.png]

No meme is complete without bringing Kermit, the ultimate meme-inspirer, into things.

37. And this one strikes a more somber note

[Image: kanye-slavery-choice-meme-37-chains.png]
Those chains were real, and they were just one of many factors that white people used to keep black people enslaved and afraid for centuries.

Kanye West Says Slavery Was a Choice, Accidentally Spawns a Meme
User Avatar Forum: TV

On top of espousing his love for Trump, sporting a MAGA hat, and claiming to have "dragon energy," Kanye West decided to also essentially blame black people for slavery.

It did not go over well. At all. And neither did Kanye's attempted explanation.
Since Kim Kardashian has insisted that this is not a mental health issue, and since mental health advocates are discouraging people from blaming mental illness for bad behavior, many are left to assume that Kanye is just ... bad.
Or at least suffering from the Dunning-Kruger Effect.
After this latest claim, that 400 years of slavery was somehow a choice that black people made, Black Twitter was all over it.
In real life, people know that slaves were separated from their families, forbidden to read or write, forced to abandon their religions, shackled, and often mutilated as punishment.
But, in order to satirize the absurdity of Kanye's claims, these hilarious tweets try to imagine a world where slavery somehow was a choice.
The results are much, much funnier than the very grim subject matter. Take a look:

1. Imagine clocking out of slavery

[Image: kanye-slavery-choice-meme-01-clocked-out.png]
If slavery were a choice, many imagine that it would be similar to working today. Which can be less than fun, but definitely isn't like real slavery.

2. So THAT was the secret!

[Image: kanye-slavery-choice-meme-02-text-stop.png]
The number that she chose is not random. It of course refers to the date of the Civil War.

3. Whoops!

[Image: kanye-slavery-choice-meme-03-select-no.png]
If only real life had been so civilized.

4. Some imagined how they'd choose masters

[Image: kanye-slavery-choice-meme-04-careerbuild...vecare.png]
"Slavecare" is a hell of an idea. Oh no, we hope that the writers of HBO's trainwreck of a series "Confederate" don't see this.

5. One "job" title was clearly coveted

[Image: kanye-slavery-choice-meme-05-house-gif.gif]
Even slaves have varying levels of status. That's a grim fact from history.

6. If it's a choice, they could have said "no"

[Image: kanye-slavery-choice-meme-06-no-thanks.png]
Again, if only the colonizers and slavers had been more civilized.

7. Real slaves would have some things to explain to Kanye
[Image: kanye-slavery-choice-meme-07-harriet-tubman.png]
Harriet Tubman was a hero.

8. Actual slaves had no such luxury
[Image: kanye-slavery-choice-meme-08-showing-up-late.png]
Honestly, even a voluntary job would fire someone for doing this.

9. Slur warning, folks
[Image: kanye-slavery-choice-meme-09-calling-hr.png]
There is a degree of absurdism to the idea of someone instructing slaves getting reported to HR.

10. Politeness matters
[Image: kanye-slavery-choice-meme-10-tone-of-voice.png]
If slavery were a choice, then rudeness might cause a slave to quit and seek enslavement somewhere else.

11. And you'd have office meals, right?
[Image: kanye-slavery-choice-meme-11-cookout.png]
Always good to bond with your coworkers ... in an alternate reality where that was allowed.

12. This one brings up embezzlement
[Image: kanye-slavery-choice-meme-12-embezzlement.png]

Actual slaves risked losing life and limb if they took so much as an extra sip of water.

13. The worldbuilding gets more elaborate
[Image: kanye-slavery-choice-meme-13-slave-u.png]
This person imagines a university for slaves.

14. A meme within a meme
[Image: kanye-slavery-choice-meme-14-blink-meme.png]
The "white guy blinking in surprise" meme is always welcome.

15. False advertising?
[Image: kanye-slavery-choice-meme-15-applecare.png]
That's how they get you ... in Kanye's version of history, we suppose.

16. Contract law
[Image: kanye-slavery-choice-meme-16-contract-reading.png]
Again, real slaves were not permitted to even learn how to read and write.

17. This meme is much newer
[Image: kanye-slavery-choice-meme-17-whos-there.png]
Again, if it's a choice, a person can opt out.

18. That sounds like the right call
[Image: kanye-slavery-choice-meme-18-amistad.png]

I saw Amistad as a kid and it was INTENSE and heavy.

19. You want to be surrounded by friends
[Image: kanye-slavery-choice-meme-19-who-all-is-there-phone.png]
In real life, slave-owners would separate slaves who were getting along, or pit them against each other in order to sever the social bonds that make us all human.

20. If it's a choice, why rush?
[Image: kanye-slavery-choice-meme-20-five-hours-late.png]
Hopefully, none of these people would ever actually come into work that late.

Kylie Jenner: THIS Is Why I Named My Daughter Stormi!
User Avatar Forum: TV
Posted by: Gimbiya - 05-03-2018, 03:40 PM - No Replies

Makeup mogul Kylie Jenner is busy being a mother to a three-month old ... when she and Travis aren't sharing photos of their topless PDA.
Now, Kylie is dishing all about what it's like to be a mother, what she hopes for in the future, and why exactly she named her daughter Stormi.

In Kylie's interview for Evening Standard Magazine, conducted by none other than big sis Kim Kardashian, the 20-year-old mother gushes about new motherhood.

"It’s just been so amazing, and so much fun."

She says that it's really making her see herself in a new light.

"I’m learning so much more about myself and life, and it’s been such a great experience."

That said, even as a parent with virtually unlimited resources and a huge family support network, Kylie says that it's not all perfect.

"Of course, there’s hard times and stuff … even in the beginning, just not sleeping, the nights, like, baby blues … and all the ups and downs."

Parenthood is complicated. Especially when you're 20.

[Image: kylie-jenner-giggles-with-stormi-webster.gif]

Kylie says that the hardest thing now is being apart from Stormi.

"And, it was so hard to leave this morning."

Anyone with pets, especially dogs, can tell you that this is super relatable. And if you've listened to Stormi's adorable giggles, you can understand.

"I’m like, ‘I’ll be right back, I’m so sorry, I have to leave!’ and she doesn’t even know what’s going on."

If she hasn't already (Stormi might be precocious, folks), 3-month-old Stormi will likely develop a sense of object permanence in the next few months.

It may take her longer to be able to understand why her mother, who is her entire world, sometimes has to leave her.

"I think about her all the time, anywhere I am."

Again, people with dogs and cats can relate. Also certain Britney Spears fans.

"I can’t wait till she can come everywhere with me, because right when she’s old enough I’ll bring her everywhere."

[Image: stormi-webster-gazes-into-the-camera.png]

Then Kylie gets into Stormi's name. She says that it started as a shorter version.

"I really don’t know how we thought of 'Storm.'"

Well, storms are beautiful and inspirational. Storm is also the name a prominent member of the X-Men.

"Her dad insisted it was him, but I feel like it was me. And that kind of just stuck with us."

It's kind of wild that they aren't sure who came up with that. Most parents have very detailed stories of how they thought of baby names.

"And then I didn’t really like just Storm -- I didn’t feel like that was her name. So then it became Stormi."

Not everyone would see "Stormi' as a logical jump from "Storm," but okay.

"And it just stuck. I feel like there were a lot of other names that I might have even liked better to be honest, but I feel like Stormi picked her own name, like it was just her name.."

Sure.

[Image: travis-scott-and-kylie-jenner-post-baby-pda.png]

Kylie talks about her hopes for her baby's future.

"She’s going to have her own challenges. I just hope that she’s strong and independent and confident."

Those are good things for her to be.

"I think more about the future because of her. Every time I leave and I’m stressed about leaving her, I’m like, ‘I’m doing it for you.’"

That is so sweet.

[Image: kylie-jenner-cradles-stormi-webster.jpg][url=https://www.thehollywoodgossip.com/gallery/kylie-jenner-cradles-stormi-webster/]

Everyone says you change completely when you become a mom, but I really feel the same, just better."

And she says that life has changed similarly.

"So I don’t know what really has completely changed my world, besides her, of course. But I feel like it’s only gotten better."

For those who imagine that a woman of Kylie's means never has to change a diaper, think again. But it's a choice, apparently.

"You’re less selfish -- and I actually enjoy changing diapers. It’s really satisfying. To make her clean again."

That's a little weird, but so is being a parent.

"And I don’t know, the whole thing is really… it’s like such an amazing experience."

Caitlyn Jenner and Sophia Hutchins: Wedding Plans Revealed?!
User Avatar Forum: TV
Posted by: Gimbiya - 05-03-2018, 03:34 PM - No Replies

Caitlyn Jenner and gal pal Sophia Hutchins have seemed practically inseparable for months now. Though they were initially coy about their close bond, they've loosened up in recent weeks.
Is this a sign that these rumored girlfriends are getting more serious? Many fans have been hoping so for a while.

And now it's reported that Cait and Sophia are planning to get married.

"They consider each other soul mates and freely admit they couldn’t imagine a life with anyone else at this point."

The two have felt a close bond, despite the hefty age difference between the 68-year-old Olympian and the 21-year-old hottie.

According to a report, the push to marry may come from Cait recently missing out on some major milestones with her former stepchidren.

"Caitlyn would have loved to have helped Khloé through the tough time in the delivery room."

Of course, it's been clear for a while that Caitlyn will never see Khloe's daughter, True Thompson.

"But the Kardashians have kicked her out of the family."

Ever since Cait wrote her tell-all book, the Kardashians want nothing to do with her. It's sad for everyone involved.

[Image: sophia-hutchins-and-caitlyn-jenner-golfing.png]

As for the wedding itself, it's apparently set for a bluff near Cait's Malibu home.

"Cait has a wedding planner to handle all the details."

The guest list will include close friends and family ... but no one with the name "Kardashian."

"This is a dream come true for Cait because her rejection by the Kardashians -- and even her own daughters -- had left her feeling isolated and suffering from a crippling depression."

Oh, that is heartbreaking.

"Sophia has changed all that."

That's so nice to hear!

Despite their age difference, the two have forged a powerful bond.

"She and Sophia have a lot in common."

Not only are both women trans -- Sophia transitioned as a teen, in college -- but they both hold conservative political views that often put them at odds with the larger trans community.

(Though Caitlyn is aware that Trump is devastating for trans rights and seems to regret that she ever supported him)

But Cait and Sophia have been practically joined at the hip for months, ever since they were spotted vacationing in Mexico last year.

"The age difference doesn’t seem to matter at all."

That's wonderful to hear.

That is some very exciting news.

That said ... we're leery of hearing wedding plans, no matter the source, when the alleged couple has yet to confirm their romance.

There are plenty of good reasons to keep a relationship under wraps.

One, it's not necessarily anyone's business. Two, though Sophia has been Caitlyn's plus-one a time or two, she is not herself a celebrity.

Three ... a lot of people are going to have a lot to say about Cait allegedly dating a woman who's younger than most of her children.

If these two marry ... Sophia would be Stormi's step-grandmother, right? Even though she's only about a year older than Kylie herself.

[Image: sophia-hutchins-bikini-photo.png][url=https://www.thehollywoodgossip.com/gallery/sophia-hutchins-bikini-photo/]

The closest that Sophia and Caitlin have actually come to announcing that they're dating is Sophia's reference to getting James Corden's "approval" on Instagram.

That's not the same as full confirmation, even though they seem incredibly close and are widely believed to be living together.

If this report of wedding plans is true, this is exciting, and maybe they'll announce it after the fact.

If so ... well, summer begins next month, and lasts until September. So that's the time frame that we're seeing for a summer wedding.

Best of luck to them both!

Months before his retrial, Bill Cosby got up on stage and joked about the accusations against him.
Bill Cosby was found guilty of sexual assault. He's not laughing now. In fact, he reportedly lashed out and screamed obscenities in the courtroom.

So much for the kindly facade that he worked so hard to maintain for all these years, huh?

As it turns out, a rich and once-beloved celebrity can be brought to justice in this country.

All that it takes to acquire justice is a dedication prosecution team, a massive shift in cultural awareness of sex crimes, and, oh, sixty accusers.

Despite that, everyone was unsure of the verdict until it was handed down. And it sounds like Bill Cosby was really taken off guard.

According to multiple witnesses, Cosby's surprise turned to outrage when the prosecution suggested that he be locked up before sentencing out of fear that he could flee the country.

When the prosecutor pointed out that they didn't think that any amount of money could guarantee that Cosby would show up to be sentenced to spend the rest of his life in prison, the disgraced comedian reportedly stood up and yelled:

"I don't have a private plane, you a--hole!"

Interesting to hear about standing and yelling, since Cosby has been shown as looking feeble and nearly blind ... though some believe that his alleged infirmity was a calculated act to elicit sympathy.

Despite Cosby's outburst, the prosecution's argument that bail should be revoked did not convince the judge.

Cosby has shown up for every previous court appearance, and so the judge declared that it was unlikely and improbable that Cosby would flee the country to live out the rest of his days as a fugitive.

But the judge did acknowledge that it's possible, so the disgraced comedian is confined to house arrest and will have an ankle monitor so that law enforcement can monitor his location and movements.

When Cosby is sentenced, even if his sentences are set to run concurrently, he is expected to spend the remainder of his life beyond bars.

Twitter's response to Cosby's reported antics reflected both satisfaction ... and exasperation.

"The gig is up - not too disabled to rant and yell at DA in response to his guilty verdict!"

A lot of people are angered that Cosby would allegedly fake being frail in the hopes of getting a sympathy acquittal.

"Bill Cosby interrupting post-conviction court proceedings to curse out his prosecutor and yell that he doesn't own a plane is my 'quit while you're ahead' cue for this news cycle. See y'all later."

Sometimes, the news can be frustrating as hell.

Cosby's conviction is for the assault of only one of his many, many accusers.

He was convicted for three counts of sexual assault against Andrea Constand, dating back to an incident in 2004.

Unfortunately, most states have a statute of limitations that tragically prevents survivors of sexual assault from seeing justice done.

But many see Andrea's court victory against Cosby as a blow for all of his accusers.

Considering that his sentence is, as we mentioned, expected to keep him imprisoned for the rest of his life, some feel that it is enough.

(Even though it isn't the sort of vindication that would come with dozens of convictions)

We hope that, when this is over, that these women receive the peace and closure that they deserve.

Cosby's outburst doesn't necessarily mean that he's willing to drop his carefully cultivated image of a frail, kindly man.

It may be that he simply lost himself in anger over his conviction and over the prosecutor who made that happen's desire to put him behind bars sooner rather than later.

Even if, at this point, courting public sympathy can no longer do him any practical good, he may continue to assert his innocence out of habit.

Everyone wants to be liked.

Brad Pitt to George Clooney: Help Me Impress My New Girlfriend!

Brad Pitt might not seem like the kind of guy who experiences much difficulty when it comes to attracting the opposite sex.
In fact, at this point, the name Pitt is pretty much synonymous "guy the entire world wants to have sex with."
But it seems that when it comes to his rumored new girlfriend, Neri Oxman, Brad feels that he's a bit out of his depth.
Neri is a world-renowned architect and a professor at MIT.
Pitt reportedly fell hard for Oxman after sitting in on one of her lectures back in November.
And it seems the actor has been experiencing some conflicting feelings ever since.
Insiders claim that Brad is already in love with Neri ... but he also feels that she may be a bit out of his league.

Yes, apparently it's possible to be out of Brad Pitt's league. Who knew?
Anyway, Pitt is determined to step his game up in order to make a more suitable partner for Neri.
And he's even recruited his old pal George Clooney to aid him in his efforts ... or so says the never-reliable Australian tabloid Woman's Day.
According to the scandal sheet from Down Under, Pitt and Clooney are essentially making another Ocean's movie, except this time, the object they hope to steal is Neri's affection.
Please accept our apologies for that tortured analogy.

"George loves that Brad has been thrown off his game and makes fun of him endlessly," one "insider" tells Woman's Day.
"It’s sweet payback for all the jokes Brad tossed his way after George started dating Amal.”
Despite all the joking, however, Clooney reportedly wants to make Brad's relationship work almost as badly as Brad does.
In fact, it seems he's called in his erudite wife to help ease Neri's transition from academic to tabloid staple.
The source tells Woman's Day that Amal Clooney has been “advising Neri on ways to keep calm and grounded amid the media circus.”
[Image: brad-pitt-and-george-clooney-wax-figures.jpg]
The informant adds that Pitt is eternally grateful for the support, as “he’s not used to having a non-famous girlfriend and Neri never expected to be in the limelight.”
We guess this could conceivably be true ... but Woman's Day doesn't have the greatest track record when it comes to Brad's love life.
In fact, just last month, the Aussie mag claimed that Clooney planned to help Pitt in his efforts to [url=https://www.thehollywoodgossip.com/2017/06/brad-pitt-finally-apologizes-jennifer-aniston/]win back Jennifer Aniston.
So either George is the ultimate wingman, or Woman's Day is really churning out the BS.
Come to think of it, there's probably some truth in both of those statements.
