The All Progressives Congress, APC, has accused the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, of committing an act bordering on treason by failing to reconvene the National Assembly on Tuesday.

Last week, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yusuf Lasun, said the [url=http://dailypost.ng/2018/08/09/2019-national-assembly-ends-break-reconvenes-tuesday/]National Assembly would cut short its recesstoday to consider the 2019 election budget.
However, the National Assembly could not be reconvened because no “firm” decision was taken by members of the Assembly on before the Deputy Speaker’s announcement.

Reacting in a statement by its Acting National Publicity Secretary, Yekini Nabena, the APC accused Saraki of pursuing his selfish interest above national interest.
The statement reads in part: “As Chairman of the 8th National Assembly, Saraki’s decision not to reconvene the National Assembly done with the support of the Speaker, House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara further buttresses our position the Saraki is ever ready to pursue his selfish interests over National Interest.
“This is another brazen display of his penchant for abuse of powers and sabotage of government, however the cost and implication.

“While Saraki and his cohorts continue to postpone their doomsday regarding the imminent Senate leadership change, the yet-to-be considered 2019 budget of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is dangerously delayed.
“Clearly, Saraki’s actions as Senate President now bother on high treason.”

Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, has ordered the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, to "overhaul the management and activities" of notorious Police unit, the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).
Over the past nine months, numerous Nigerians have taken to social media to accuse officers of the unit of several misconducts ranging from harassment, extortion, assault to extra-judicial killings.

In a statement issued by Osinbajo's spokesperson, Laolu Akande, the Acting President ordered the IGP to shut down the unit "with immediate effect".

The statement read, "Following persistent complaints and reports on the activities of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) that border on allegations of human rights violations, His Excellency, Professor Yemi Osinbajo SAN, Acting-President, Federal Republic of Nigeria, has directed the Inspector General of Police to, with immediate effect, overhaul the management and activities of SARS and ensure that any unit that will emerge from the process, will be intelligence-driven and restricted to the prevention and detection of armed robbery and kidnapping, and apprehension of offenders linked to the stated offences, and nothing more."

Fifa's statutes do not allow undue influence on the running of football
Fifa has issued ultimatums to Nigeria and Ghana that they both face bans from global football for "undue influence" in the affairs of their governing bodies.

Nigeria's ban could begin with immediate effect if the Nigeria Football Federation "offices are not handed back to the legitimate NFF executive committee under president Amaju Pinnick."

The issues in Nigeria come after a recent court case recognised Chris Giwa, who is currently serving five-year ban by Fifa, as the NFF president.

Giwa has been protesting the result of elections held in September 2014 that saw Pinnick installed as NFF president.

The NFF are due to hold polls on 20 September as Pinnick's four-year term is coming to an end.

The statement from Fifa added that any ban would not affect Nigeria's ongoing participation at the Women's Under-20 World Cup in France.

The Super Falconets are due to play Spain in the quarter-finals on Thursday.

A Ghana high court petition, brought by the attorney general to have the football association liquidated, must be withdrawn by the 27 August or a ban will be imposed.

The case came in the wake of widespread corruption allegations.

Football's world governing body says this "constitutes an undue influence in the affairs of the GFA in contravention of Fifa statutes."

The letter signed by Fifa secretary general Fatma Samoura added that "if the petition to start the liquidation process of the GFA is not withdrawn by Monday 27 August 2018 at 1100GMT the GFA will be suspended with immediate effect."

The petition came in the wake of a film by controversial Ghanaian journalist Anas Aremayaw Anas that showed African match officials and former GFA president Kwesi Nyantakyi accepting cash gifts.

A global ban would put Ghana's 2019 African Cup of Nations qualifier against Kenya on 8 September in doubt, Nigeria are due to travel to face Seychelles the same weekend.

Since the release of the film the Confederation of African Football has issued bans to many of the match officials shown on camera.

Nyantakyi resigned from his posts as GFA president and from the posts he held with Fifa and the Confederation of African Football (Caf). He denies any wrongdoing.

Fifa, suspended Nyantakyi for 90 days on 8 June but he has now left his role on the Fifa Council.

Caf has also announced that it will hold a vote at an Extraordinary Congress on "30 September 2018 in Egypt to fill the Caf 1st Vice-President function and the vacancy on the Fifa Council."

HOW APC SENATORS FOUND IT DIFFICULT TO IMPEACH SARAKI – LAI MOHAMMED

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has revealed why it has been difficult for the All Progressives Congress, APC, to remove Dr. Bukola Saraki as Senate President.



Mohammed, speaking how the problems being witnessed in the ruling party started, said that Saraki forced himself into the office of the Senate President and made Ike Ekweremmadu, from the opposition, his deputy.



The Minister quoted Saraki as saying that ‘If you remove me, you are going to have PDP as Senate President’ adding that the Senate President had aligned and worked for the PDP all along.



Mohammed said this in an interview with newsmen in Lagos, where be reacted to the gale of defections in the APC.

He said that recent events in the party did not come to him as surprise, adding that they were expected.

He said, “The foundation for what you see today was laid the day the Senate President forced himself on the party as Senate President.

“That was the day the foundation for what you are witnessing today was laid because traditionally, it is the party’s prerogative who becomes the presiding officers in the two houses. Here, we were met with a fait accompli when Dr. Bukola Saraki, against the wishes of the party, did the unthinkable by aligning with the opposition and making them an offer they could not refuse.

“I can’t quite remember the number, but almost the entire 40 plus senators in PDP voted for him. So, he needed only a minority from the APC. We were all waiting for Mr. President to come and address us on this issue at the International Conference Centre, it was announced that he (Bukola) had emerged as the Senate President.

“From that day, we knew we had two problems: one, we had a Senate President who imposed himself on the party, and to make it worse, as an insurance, he arranged for an opposition person to be Deputy Senate President; that makes it impossible for us to remove him, hence his thinking, ‘If you remove me, you are going to have a PDP Senate President.’

“From that day, we had a problem. This is not a surprise at all. Of course, you could see the behaviour of the National Assembly since then. We have a National Assembly in which we had a clear majority in both houses, but which treated the executive with contempt and actually slowed down the work of government.

“In 2016, 2017 and 2018, our budgets were delayed. In 2016 and 2017, the earliest we got our budgets was June. Key appointments, nominations and confirmations for key organisations that could move the government forward like the CBN, like the NDIC, were delayed.
“Really, it couldn’t have been worse if the PDP had a majority in the National Assembly.”

Presidential Aspirant under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has declared that Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike deserves a second term on the strength of his projects.

The Former Kano State Governor spoke at the Government House Port Harcourt on Monday night during a condolence visit on Governor Wike over the death of the Attorney General of Rivers State, Hon Emmanuel Aguma (SAN).

He said: "We pray God to give us long life and health to see you completing a second term so that you can revolutionise the entire state."

Kwankwaso commended Governor Wike for leading the state towards a positive direction.

"After these four years, if you have another four years , only God knows the height the state will attain", he said.

On the death of the Attorney General of Rivers State, Kwankwaso prayed for the repose of his soul.

The Former Kano State Governor who was accompanied by the Former Edo State Governor, Chief Lucky Igbinedion and Former Presidential Economic Adviser, Dr Magnus Kpakol and other leaders also met with the Rivers State Governor behind closed doors.

In his remarks, Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike said that the death of the Attorney General of Rivers State is a great loss to the state and the PDP.

He said that since the Late Attorney-General, Hon Emmanuel Aguma (SAN) assumed the office, the State Government has never had crisis on legal issues.

The governor expressed happiness that Senator Kwankwaso is back to the PDP, noting that Kwankwaso will be valuable in the victory of PDP in 2019.

"We are working together under one umbrella, believing God will help us as 2019 approaches ", he said.

A driver who worked with the chairman of the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC), has been arrested for allegedly raping a 13-year-old girl and getting her pregnant in the process in Sapele, Delta state.

According to a report by journalist Sapele Oghenek, the suspected rapist identified as Mr. Friday, was assigned to drive the children of his employer ( the commission's chairman who also doubles as his friend) as he was given free access to the house before allegedly committing the shameful act.

It was revealed that one that fateful day, Mr. Friday was about to pick his employer's 13-year-old daughter as he met her while she was having her bath. He waited for her to come out from the bathroom before forcefully grabbing her and raping her.

After the rape, the teenage girl got pregnant, according to report.

The driver was immediately sacked and arrested by the police for prosecution.

Now report has it that people are pleading on the driver's behalf for him to be released since he has been sacked, arrested and also said to have learnt his lesson.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and Seplat Petroleum Development Company Plc have signed five agreements to develop a gas production project aimed at delivering about 3.4 billion standard cubic feet of gas per day (bscfd) by 2020, a statement from the corporation has disclosed.


The statement explained that the new gas project was part of efforts by the NNPC to bridge the projected medium-term gas supply gap expected in Nigeria by 2020.



NNPC Group General Manager, Public Affairs, Mr. Ndu Ughamadu, said in the statement that the project called Assa North and Ohaji South (ANOH) gas development scheme was one of the Seven Critical Gas Development Projects (7CGDP) that would boost gas production and infrastructure development in the country.





The statement quoted NNPC Group Managing Director, Dr. Maikanti Baru, as saying that a special purpose vehicle known as ANOH Gas Processing Company (AGPC) was being promoted by both parties to develop, build, operate and maintain the ANOH gas processing plant, with an initial capacity of 300 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscf/d) of gas in Imo State.

According to him, NNPC would do everything possible to ensure that the project was successfully delivered on schedule within budget and to specification.



He stated that the project was designed as a world-class gas processing plant with the capacity to deliver up to 3.4 bscf of gas daily.



“Following the execution of Heads of Terms (HoT) by the Nigerian Gas Processing and Transportation Company (NGPTC) on behalf of the NNPC, Seplat and AGPC on December 19, 2017, the steering committee for the AGPC project has provided the leadership and broad guidance for the development and finalisation of the various commercial agreements required to underpin the project,” Baru said in the statement.



Similarly, the statement quoted the Chief Executive Officer of Seplat, Mr. Austin Avuru, to have described the ANOH gas processing plant as a landmark project which captures the essence of the gas infrastructure development initiative of the federal government.



Avuru expressed confidence that the AGPC would deliver on the project within the next 18 months and achieve its objective of being a key gas supplier to both the domestic and export market.



According to the statement, the MoU signed in this regards included the AGPC shareholders agreement among AGPC, NGPTC and Seplat; AGPC share subscription agreement between AGPC, NGPTC and Seplat; Wet Gas Sales and Purchase Agreement between NNPC, Seplat and AGPC; Gas Sale and Purchase Agreement between AGPC and Nigerian Gas Marketing Company (NGMC), and Gas Marketing Agreement between AGPC and NGMC.

A Senior Lecturer of the Department of Catering and Hotel Management Benue State Polytechnic , Ugbokolo, Andrew Ogbuja, has been arraigned at the upper Area Court One in Makurdi, Benue, for Criminal Conspiracy and Rape of a 13 year old housemaid, Elizabeth Ochanya Ogbaje.

The court, on, Monday, remanded the 51-year-old in prison custody. The accused lecturer was alleged to have had carnal knowledge of Elizabeth while she lived in his house.

Prosecution had told the court that on August 8, 2018, at about 12:00 noon, the body of women lawyers (FIDA) in Benue State had in company of one Mrs Rose Abah of Ogene Amadu Edumoga reported the matter to the police.


The First Information Report (FIR), indicated that the complainant, Mrs Abah told the police that sometimes in February 2018, when her daughter, Elizabeth, was sick and admitted at FMC Makurdi, she told her that, when she was staying with her cousin sister, Felicia Ogbuja, between 2013 and 2015, the son of the same cousin sister by name Victor Ogbuja, had canal knowledge of her.

The court further heard that the husband to the cousin sister, Andrew Ogbuja, also had canal knowledge of the teenager and that during police investigation, the said accused, Andrew was arrested for committing the offence while his son, Victor, is at large.

But, the accused who was arrested last Friday, pleaded with the judge to temper justice with mercy and grant him bail to enable him go back home and resolve the matter amicably considering his status.
The accused who spoke through his counsel, David Ojile, equally promised to take full responsibility for the treatment of the victim, hence it is a family affair but the judge, Justice S. D. Kwen rejected the plea.

He sent the lecturer to Makurdi Federal Prison pending the determination of the matter. No pleas was however taken at mention of the case because the court lacked the jurisdiction to hear the matter. The case has been adjourned to September 24.

Quote:The Federal High Court in Abuja has been asked to among others, restrain the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Department of State Services (DSS) from supporting any effort to sack Senate President Bukola Saraki through means other than that provided for under Section 50(2)(c ) of the Constitution.

The request from part of the reliefs in a suit filed on Monday by Senators Rafiu Adebayo (PDP, Kwara South) and Isa Misau (PDP, Bauchi Central) through a team of lawyers, including former Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) Kanu Agabi (SAN) and Mahmud Magaji (SAN).

The plaintiffs stated that, going by recent occurrences and utterances by some leaders of a faction of All Progressives Congress (APC), from which they had defected, they were convinced of plots to force Saraki off the Senate President’s seat by means other than that provided in Section 50(2)(c ) of the Constitution.

Section 50(2) provides: “The President or Deputy President of the Senate or the Speaker or Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives shall vacate his office…. © if he is removed from office by a resolution of the Senate or of the House of Representatives, as the case may be, by the votes of not less than two-thirds majority of the members of that House.”



Listed as defendants in the suit are: The Senate, the Senate President, Deputy Senate President, Senator Ahmed Lawal (Senate Leader), Senator Bala Ibn Nallah (Deputy Senate Leader), Senator Emma Buacha (Deputy Minority Leader), Clerk of the Senate, Deputy Clerk of the Senate, Attorney General of the Federation, Inspector General of Police and Department of State Services (DSS).

Misau stated, in a supporting affidavit, that there was evidence of threat of constitutional breach which require the court to intervene by restraining the defendants from resorting to unconstitutional means to actualise their alleged threat and plot to unseat the Senate President following his defection to the PDP.

The plaintiffs are praying the court for, among others, an order restraining the 9th, 10th and 11th defendants, either by themselves, agents, servants, privies by whatsoever name so called from enforcing any act of the 1st, 3rd to 8th defendants purporting to have removed the 2nd defendant from office without such act being in compliance with the provisions of Sections 50(2) of the Constitution of the Fedora! Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).

* A declaration that the President of the Senate cannot be said to have vacated his office by virtue of Section 50(2)© of the Constitution when he has not been removed from office by the votes of not less than two-third majority of the members of the Senate.

No date has been set for the hearing of the suit.

A former minister of aviation and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Femi Fani-Kayode, on Monday, revealed the presidential candidate that would not have his vote come 2019.

A 47-year-old Mrs. Veronica Iorshe, from Howe, Ugee Council Ward, Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue State has revealed how she slept with her own biological son and eventually took in for him.

Mrs. Iorshe said she slept with her son just to save her marriage.

A truck driver has been arrested by operatives of the Ogun State Police Command. The suspect, who had earlier been convicted for the theft of a motorcycle, may be on his way back to prison for alleged theft of a MAN Diesel truck.

Arrested alongside the suspect, Yisa Nwachukwu was the alleged receiver of the stolen truck, Yusuf Sanusi.

According to a press release made available to Crimepuzzle, Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, said "The suspects were arrested following information received by the DPO Onipanu Division, Otta, SP Sangobiyi Johnson, to the effect that a Man Diesel truck was brought into Ojolowo Sawmill in Otta, where it was being dismantled, after sale to Sanusi.

Oyeyemi added that, "On receipt of the information, the DPO, Onipanu led his detectives to the scene where Yisa Nwachukwu, who had earlier been arrested for stealing a Bajaj motorcycle, charged to court and convicted, was again arrested together with the receiver, Yusuf Sanusi.

The statement further pointed that, "On interrogation, Yisa Nwachukwu stated that he was employed as a driver by the owner of the truck, one Alhaji Owonifaari, adding that he decided to abscond with the truck on the ground of unpaid salary.

Giving further insight into the inglorious act, Nwachukwu said, while on his way to Nsuka in Enugu State, the truck developed a mechanical fault and that since he had no money to fix it, he called the receiver, Yusuf Sanusi, who met him at Ore in Ondo State where they sealed up the negotiation for 400,000 and thereafter towed it to the spot..

The PPRO also disclosed that at the spot of arrests of the duo, a stolen Gulf Bus with registration number FKJ 932 XS, belonging to one Kingsley Unaka, was recovered.

"Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Iliyasu, who commended his men for a Job well done, advised members of the public to always have a background check on whoever they want to employ, so as not to have an armed robber as a staff", Oyeyemi said .

Criticism of Manchester City and England winger Raheem Sterling is motivated by racism, says former Arsenal striker Ian Wright.
Sterling, 23, has faced frequent media disapproval, most recently for a tattoo of a rifle on his leg but also for purchasing clothes from Primark and buying his mother a house.

Woman hacks husband to death then tries to bury him in their bedroom







A mother-of-four killed her husband then dug a grave in their bedroom to bury him but was caught before she could cover her tracks.
 
Harriet Nassali, 38, hacked her husband, Sirajj Kawuma, to death with a knife at about 5 am on Sunday, August 12, 2018, at their home in Gombe Division Wakiso District, Uganda. After killing him, she dug a 3-feet grave to bury his body in their bedroom.
 

 
On realising the gravity of her action, she decided to run from home. But her 13-year-old child found out what had happened and alerted neighbours who then called the police.
 
One of the children told the police about a male friend who had grown so close to their mother days before their father was hacked to death. The male friend identified as Alex Kamusangi then led a group of investigating officers to Nassali’s hideout and both were arrested.
 

 
Upon questioning, the duo admitted to having had plans of eliminating the deceased so that they could blossom in their new love affair. Further inquiries reveal that the deceased and his wife previously had misunderstandings as a result of a land procurement deal gone bad resulting in their separation.
 
Close family friends revealed the bitter history of how the deceased had given his wife Nassali 27 million Ugandan Shillings to buy a plot of land. She allegedly used the money for other purposes and this caused a misunderstanding between them.
 

 
The deceased’s body has since been transported to the mortuary for postmortem and the two suspects detained at Mattuga Police Station.

De Gea joining Man Utd from Atletico Madrid in 2011 in an £18.9m deal
Manchester United are confident David de Gea will sign a new long-term contract to stay at Old Trafford.
The 27-year-old's present deal expires in 2019, although United have an option to extend it by a further season.
The Old Trafford club were keen to begin talks with goalkeeper De Gea's representatives and their hand has been strengthened by Thibaut Courtois' £35m move to Real Madrid from Chelsea.

Real have repeatedly been linked with Spain international De Gea since 2015.

He was back in action for United in the first game of the 2018-19 Premier League season against Leicester City and made two key saves in helping his side win 2-1.

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has admitted sending a petition to the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) on Falz’s ‘This Is Nigeria’ song.

It will be recalled that following the release of the video for 'This is Nigeria' by Falz earlier in June, the Muslim group had issued Falz with a seven day ultimatum to withdraw the song or face legal actions.

The group subsequently withdrew the ultimatum following widespread reactions from the public. News however emerged on Thursday, August 9th, that the NBC have placed a ban on the song and the group has now regained its voice.

In a statement released by the group director Ishaq Akintola, on Monday, August 13, the group admits to having sent a petition to the NBC to place ban on the song.

“We asked Falz to withdraw the video or we would sue him.

Instead of showing remorse he dared us. We knew he could delay the court case for years because he is a lawyer and he would use every trick in the books to frustrate us. That was why he was boasting.

Therefore, instead of going to court, we decided to ambush him by sending a petition to the video board. This week, the NBC banned the video and others like it.

He should be the one to go to court now if he likes. Let him go and show how brilliant he is in court.

He and his fans laughed at us when we complained about his provocative and vulgar video. But there is no doubt that he who laughs last laughs best. It is hoped that Nigerian artistes will borrow a leaf from this episode.”

MURIC used Fela Kuti’s activism as a point of reference, saying the Afrobeat progenitor never attacked any religion.

Fela Anikulapo Kuti used his songs to fight military dictatorship and other ills in the Nigerian society, but he never attacked Muslims or Christians.

Neither did he incite Nigerians against any ethnic group. He criticised religious groups but never in a vulgar manner and he never exposed Muslims or Christians to ridicule.

MURIC said the video for Falz’s ‘This is Nigeria’ could have resulted in a religious crisis but they handled it “intellectually,” adding that Nigerians do not appreciate their efforts.

“‘This is Nigeria’ should remain banned until the provocative and vulgar scenes are removed. The video can still go on air with slight modifications,” the group said.

“Not every Nigerian is a criminal. As we have the Evans, so do we have the Oloyedes, the Ahmadu Alis, the Femi Falanas and the Sowores. Even Falz himself is not a criminal.

“Therefore Falz and other artistes should encourage the youth to emulate our heroes instead of pushing them to ape rogues. Finally, we commend NBC and the video censors board for acting swiftly.” the group concluded.

An 11-year-old hacked a government website and changed election results at DEFCON



Last Friday, an 11-year-old apparently managed change election results within 10 minutes. While at this year’s DEFCON, he and many other children were offered the chance to hack into a mock-up of a Secretary of State website, and did so with alacrity.

According to DEFCON spokespeople, the kids were offered 13 replicas of Secretary of State websites, with Florida being the first. 11-year-old Emmett Brewster was able to hack it inside 10 minutes.


 
That’s…wow, what the heck was I doing at 11?

Emmett was one of about 50 children between the ages of 8 and 16 who took part in a kid-specific workshop at this year’s hacker conference. According to Quartz, the kids were able to manipulate various things on the mock websites, including vote counts, candidate names, and party names.

The National Association of Secretaries of State, the organization for public election officials, also issued a statement on the hack:

Our main concern with the approach taken by DEFCON is that it utilizes a pseudo environment which in no way replicates state election systems, networks or physical security. Providing conference attendees with unlimited physical access to voting machines, most of which are no longer in use, does not replicate accurate physical and cyber protections established by state and local governments before and on Election Day. We are also concerned that creating “mock” election office networks and voter registration databases for participants to defend and/or hack is also unrealistic.

That seems a little fussy, doesn’t it? Precisely replicating the physical environment of a voting booth isn’t exactly what these exercises are about, and focusing on that doesn’t address the flaws DEFCON attendees — and apparently at least one child — did find.

Nico Sell, founder of nonprofit r00tz Asylum, which teaches kids about white-hat hacking, told PBS NewsHour the flaws found by Emmett and other children at the event were “the real thing,” also saying:

These are very accurate replicas of all of the sites. These things should not be easy enough for an 8-year-old kid to hack within 30 minutes, it’s negligent for us as a society.

Others have criticized DEFCON’s Voting Village, where attendees attempt to crack voting machines, for providing an unrealistic display of voting circumstance, including Election Systems and Software (ES & S), one of the major providers of election equipment. It was quick to reassure customers the machines wouldn’t actually be as physically accessible on election day as they were at DEFCON.


In response to ES & S, DEFCON officials released a statement criticizing them for avoiding the issue:

ES&S’s unclear comments and threats towards the Voting Village seem to be designed to create questions and cast doubt in the minds of researchers and election officials, discouraging them from pursuing these vital lines of inquiry. At a time when there is significant concern about the integrity of our election system, the public needs now more than ever to know that election equipment has been rigorously evaluated and that vulnerabilities are not just being swept under the rug.

If nothing else, I look forward to seeing the kids to echo the achievement of DEFCONs past by rickrolling mock election websites.

There was panic in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti state capital on Monday evening as another man was killed by unidentified gunmen in daylight.

The News Agency of Nigeria, (NAN) reports that the killing of the man, whose identity could not be immediately ascertained, came barely three days after a close ally of former Gov. Segun Oni, Mr. Bunmi Ojo was assassinated in the capital.

Witnesses said the man was shot at a junction close to the end of the newly constructed overhead bridge at the Okesa/Ojumose Area of the ancient town at about 5:30pm.

According to the witnesses, the victim, who was said to be a passenger on a commercial motorcycle, popularly called Okada, was allegedly pursued to the area where he was later killed by his assailants.

NAN learnt that the killers who also came to the scene on another Okada, ordered the operator of the commercial motorcycle conveying the victim to stop at the spot where he was killed and sped-off immediately they achieved their aim.

However, the assailants spared the operator of the Okada.

The body of the shot passenger had since been moved to an undisclosed hospital by sympathisers who felt he could still survive, as he bled profusely.

The incident led to sudden closure of many shops in and around the Bisi Market located close to the area by their owners, even as many residents who either witnessed or got wind of the killing hurriedly left for their homes .

When contacted, the police Public Relations Officer, (PPRO) for the state command, DSP Caleb Ikechukwu told NAN that the command was yet to be briefed by the Divisional Police Officer, (DPO) of the Okesa Division.

He promised to speak on the attack as soon as he got information about the incident.

Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) yesterday enjoined Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje of Kano State not to visit Aba for a chieftaincy title.

Its National Director of Information, Edeson Samuel, gave the warning in a statement yesterday in Enugu, following the plan by Eze Eberechi Dick to confer the title on the governor.

According to the group, Ganduje does not deserve to receive such traditional title because of his gross disrespect and venom for Ndigbo. Samuel accused the governor of several atrocities against Ndigbo, citing the gruesome murder of an Igbo woman, Mrs. Bridget Agbahime in Kano.He said Ganduje dis not take any action against the sponsored Islamic fundamentalists who murdered the woman.


MASSOB recalled that a Muslim mob, which accused her of blasphemy, killed the 74-year-old kitchen utensils’ trader from Imo State at Kofar Wambai market in Kano.He said reports by Biafra Intelligence Agency had said the people murdered her because she refused to allow a man to perform ablution in front of her shop.

The group lamented that many months after the murder, Ganduje has not done anything about the matter, amidst frustration of the family in the prosecution process.The statement reads: “In what must go down as a classic judicial swindle, the Chief Magistrate, Muhammad Jibril, acting on the advice of the Attorney General of Kano State, through Ganduje, discharged the suspects and terminated the case.

“The Kano State government said there was no case to answer, as all the suspects were innocent. This was despite that the governor had called the killing “unjustifiable,” and vowed to ensure that the culprits were treated in line with the country’s laws.”

He said: “MASSOB and the entire people of Biafra will never allow Ganduje to step into Aba, or the palace of Eze Eberechi Dick for the traditional chieftaincy title. “We shall declare and treat the monarch as a major Biafra saboteur, if he goes ahead in the planned conferment of the traditional chieftaincy title.”Meanwhile, leader of the Biafra Zionists Federation (BZF), Benjamin Onwuka, has appealed to the Federal Government to release pro-Biafra detainees in prisons across the country.

Onwuka said the detainees should be released within one week to enable them participate in the Biafra restoration rally planned for August 20.BZF warned against further harassment of the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, as well as the governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom and Akwa Ibom State governor, Udom Emmanuel.The group urged students to come out and support its movement, stressing that it was the only way that hope could be restored in the country.

No date for National Assembly Reconvening on INEC Budget

The Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki and Speaker, House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara, have directed that we inform all Senators, Honorable members and the public that a date has not been set for the reconvening of the Senate and the House of Representatives to consider the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) 2019 elections budget request forwarded by President Muhammadu Buhari on July 17, 2018.

The leadership of the two chambers had met and agreed to reconvene to consider the proposal this week before which a meeting between the Joint Senate and House of Representatives Committees on Electoral Matters and officials of the INEC must have held on or before Monday August 13, 2018.

The joint committees were also expected to meet with the joint Senate and House Committees on Appropriations, Loans and Debts on the Eurobond loan request after which two reports would have been ready for presentation in the two chambers.

However, no such meeting had taken place yet as a result of which both Senate and House of Representatives cannot reconvene as there is no report to consider.

Until the Committees have a ready report for the consideration of the two chambers, it will be most irresponsible to recall members from recess especially those that may have travelled to Saudi Arabia for the Hajj.

Female professor sexually assaults male student.
A female professor at the New York University, Avital Ronell, has been accused by her former student, Nimrod Reitman of sexually harassing him, and the university found her responsible.

But some leading feminist scholars have supported her in ways that echo the defenses of male harassers.
The case seems like a familiar story turned on its head: Avital Ronell, a world-renowned female professor of German and Comparative Literature at New York University, was found responsible for sexually harassing a male former graduate student, Nimrod Reitman.

An 11-month Title IX investigation found Professor Ronell, described by a colleague as “one of the very few philosopher-stars of this world,” responsible for sexual harassment, both physical and verbal, to the extent that her behavior was “sufficiently pervasive to alter the terms and conditions of Mr. Reitman’s learning environment.”
The university has suspended Professor Ronell for the coming academic year.

In the Title IX final report, excerpts of which were obtained by The New York Times, Mr. Reitman said that she had sexually harassed him for three years, and shared dozens of emails in which she referred to him as “my most adored one,” “Sweet cuddly Baby,” “rooster-er spaniel,” and “my astounding and beautiful Nimrod.”
It is known, for example, that Ronell hosted M. in Paris and introduced him to writer Pierre Alféri, son of Ronell’s mentor Jacques Derrida.
The circumstances of the souring of the relationship aren’t clear, nor is it known if it was gradual process or if a single incident led to the rupture.
People close to Ronell have said the filing of the complaint came as a “total shock” to her as there had been no hints that M. was about to “turn on her.”
They noted that Ronell was appalled to discover that the complainant had accused her of “psychological abuse.”

A beaming bride defiantly marching up a flooded church aisle in the Philippines has won hearts as the country suffers a fresh bout of monsoonal rains.

Jobel Delos Angeles, 24, married the father of her two children on Saturday as Tropical Storm Yagi and the southwest monsoon brought heavy flooding to the capital Manila and nearby areas, including their home province of Bulacan.

In a Facebook video shared over a thousand times, Delos Angeles is all smiles as she walks through brown floodwaters in a white gown and veil before her suited groom clad in flip-flops takes her to the altar.

“Even if it floods or it rains, nothing can stop me. You only get married once, will you postpone it? I was marrying the man I love,” Delos Angeles told AFP by phone.

“My gown got wet and heavy but I told myself it was as if I was walking on a red carpet.”

The Philippines endures an average of 20 typhoons and storms each year.

The latest storm brought misery to many, with 20,000 residents fleeing the riverside district of Marikina in the national capital region where floods swept away cars, authorities said.

But for Delos Angeles, the weekend was cause for celebration.

She said she and her partner of seven years did not expect bad weather but never considered calling off their wedding even after floodwaters entered the church in Hagonoy town.

It was a double ceremony, with their five-month-old daughter baptised in the same event, she added.

Guests were photographed barefoot, including children who were afraid to slip.

“We didn’t want a new schedule as we were already stressed out. Our hometown is really flood-prone,” Delos Angeles added.

“No car wanted to bring us to the church so I just rode a boat. We didn’t expect so many people would still turn up, even the entourage.”

The bride’s aunt, Teresa Bautista, posted the video of her niece which has drawn comments from social media users hailing the event as the “wedding of year”.

“I felt bad for them but at the same time I am happy they got it through,” Bautista told AFP.

Delos Angeles said she had no regrets.

“It is truly memorable. I am so happy. It shows the lesson that there are no what ifs.”

According to reports, Deborah and Anthony had a misunderstanding over a mop stick in their compound and the issue degenerated into a heated argument.
However, Deborah allegedly reported the matter to her boyfriend, Oqwong, who came over to attack Anthony, leaving him in a near death condition and he had to be rushed to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, where he is currently recuperating in pains.

Her boyfriend, Oqwong is reported to be a notorious student on campus who is quite dreaded for his violent attitudes among his friends.
He reportedly came around with a small machete to the scene and threatened to maim and destroy Anthony before eventually wreaking the havoc on the victim.
According to witnesses at the scene, Deborah and Oqwong fled immediately they realised the harm they had caused on their victim.

It is not clear if the matter has been reported to the school authourity and the Police, but at the time of getting this report, the Police was yet to be notified of the incident.

Lagos state demolishes illegal nine-storey building in Lekki (photo)
A nine-storey building at Osapa London in Lekki area of Lagos was last weekend demolished for allegedly contravening building plan regulations by Lagos State Building Control Agency LASBCA.
The General Manager of the Agency, Mr. Olalekan Shodehinde, said the demolition was also because the building had no certified plan approval.

Shodehinde said the building was detected in 2017, following which an investigation was launched, stressing that the building had nine floors, while the master plan of Osapa, the area it was situated, only allows for a maximum of four floors.
According to Shodehinde, the structural stability of the soil could not carry such a high-rise structure, adding that the state government had given approval or order for the building to be pulled down.
He noted that the exercise was being carried out to curb the incidents of incessant building collapse in the state, pointing out that the state government would not fold its arms and allow loss of lives and destruction of property.
Shodehinde who said several notices had been served on the owner of the structure, but allegedly failed to comply with the order, said:
“Though, the building does not have approval plan, what we are talking about goes beyond approval plan, because if the developer applied for approval of nine floors in the area, it would not have been granted.
“When LABSCA discovered the building in 2017, a Stop Order Notice was served. In October of the same year, when it was at its fifth floors, the agency sealed it.
After a few months, the agency visited the site to observe that the building had been constructed up to the ninth floor.
“Again, a 14 day ultimatum notice was served to the developers to remove the structure at their own cost, which they failed to comply with. Once an illegal building has been demolished by the government, the owner would be given 90 days to pay the demolition cost, failure to do so means the government would confiscate the landed property”, LASBCA GM stated.

“I sat down with my team, and we did a couple designs, we designed some shirts and some bandanas, and we just decided to put it up for the fans—something we intend to do like every three months, put out new collections.”

About 23,000 applicants have reportedly applied for just 1000 job vacancies declared by the Bayelsa Civil Service Commission.

The state Governor, Seriake Dickson, lifted an embargo on employment and directed the commission to recruit 1000 workers following the outcome of the ongoing public service reforms in the state.

The Chairman of the commission in Yenagoa, the state capital, Dr. Peter Singabele, said in obedience to Dickson’s directive, the commission activated “a transparent recruitment process”.
Speaking at the launching of the state civil service website, Singabele said the web portal was established to ensure transparency and give all applicants equal opportunities.
He said the creation of the website became imperative after about 23,000 applicants surged to the office to pick forms for the 1000 job openings.“Over 23,000 unemployed youths invaded the office of the commission and almost broke down the building. But with the website, they don’t need to come here. They only need to send their applications online”, he said.
He said the creation of the website was part of the brainchild of the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr. Daniel Iworiso-Markson describing the initiative as “very important”.
He said the launching of the website would restore the confidence of the people and stop the speculations that the government was out to deceive them adding that it would help all applicants to check and monitor the recruitment process.
Giving the breakdown of the job applications contained in the commission’s technical report, the Commissioner III, Chief Kune Igoni-Claudius, said out of 23,000 applicants, 12,335 were cleared by the commission.
He said those selected would participate in the job evaluation test and interviews adding that the timetable for the events would be uploaded in the website.
Explaining further, Igoni-Claudius, said out of the 12,335 cleared applicants, Sagbama Local Government Area has the highest number of 2170 while Nembe has the lowest of 993.
Others are Brass 1187; Ekeremor 1500; Kolokuma/Opokuma, 1230; Ogbia, 1417; Southern Ijaw, 2025 and Yenagoa, 1,812.

Aside from the issue of his health, which has greatly hampered his performance in the last three years, Daily Independent gathered that those against a second term for Buhari also harped on the current divisions in the country which, according to them, may worsen if he seeks re-election.

According to our source, “From the feelers we are getting, President Buhari may opt out of the 2019 presidential election. There is serious pressure on him from the international community, especially the United States, European Union, the United Kingdom (UK), and even Saudi Arabia.


It would be recalled that shortly before his departure to the UK, the president had appealed to his supporters across the nation to suspend campaigns for his re-election in compliance with the electoral law, saying it had come to the realisation of the presidency that his supporters had started campaigns through advocacies and placement of advertisements in the media.

A member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Working Committee (NWC), who also confirmed the development, said there was a possibility that the president might not seek re-election.

According to him, that was why loyalists of the president were considering Ambassador Babagana Kingibe, who served as Secretary to the Federal Government (SGF) from 2007 to 2008 under the late Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, as a possible alternative.

“Yes, I am aware of the development though it is not something that is being discussed at the party level for now.

“For now, it is not a serious issue because one, the president has not made up his mind whether to continue with his re-election plans or do a single term or bow out.

Two, the party, for now, is trying to put its house in order, given the gale of defections among parties and issues surrounding the Senate Presidency.

“Once these are settled, we will now shift our focus on issues surrounding the 2019 presidential election.

“But one thing I know is that ever since the president announced his desire to seek re-election at the party’s NEC meeting in April, there has been serious pressure on him, especially from the international community, to rescind his decision and that is why some power brokers in the presidency are already considering Babagana Kingibe as an alternative if the president decides not to run.”

Also speaking, a close ally of the president said he was considering Hadi Sirika, Minister of State for Aviation, as his choice but added that his loyalists are afraid that Sirika is too immature for the job.

Electricity generation drops to 2,684MW

The nation’s power generation plunged by 777.9 megawatts on Monday as output from the hydropower plants and some gas-fired stations, including Egbin in Lagos, suffered declines.

A total generation capacity of 4,463.3MW was unavailable as of 6am on Monday, compared to 3,631.4MW on Friday, according to the latest data obtained by our correspondent from the Ministry of Power, Works and Housing.


Gas constraints and frequency management occasioned by electricity distribution companies’ load demand left 2,365.5MW and 2,087MW, respectively idle.

Total electricity generation, which stood at 3,462MW as of 6am on Sunday, fell to 2,684.20MW on Monday.

The nation generates most of its electricity from gas-fired power plants, while output from hydropower plants makes up about 30 per cent of the total generation.

Generation from Kainji, Jebba and Shiroro hydro plants dropped to 203MW, 133MW and 162MWm, respectively as of 6am on Monday from 275MW, 317MW, 376MW on Friday, August 10.

Kainji’s unit 1G7 was said to be out on stator winding failure; 1G8, out due to oil leakage on governor runner head; 1G9, out due to burnt 7.5MVA 33/0.415kV and 183.6MVA 16/330kV station service transformer and generator transformer; and 1G10 was shut down due to thrust bearing temperature problem.

Three units at Jebba, 2G2, 3 and 4, were said to be out on frequency management, while 2G6 was out due to burnt generator winding and automatic voltage regulator.

It was gathered that Shiroro’s 411G1, 411G2 and 411G3 recorded reduced generation on frequency management; while unit 411G 4 was out on maintenance.

The three hydropower plants generated a total of 1,293MW as of January 5, translating to about 36.7 per cent of the total national generation of 3,517.5MW that day.


Output from Egbin, the nation’s biggest power station, fell from 567MW as of 6am on Sunday to 436MW on Monday.

Six power plants, namely Geregu I, Geregu NIPP, Odukpani NIPP, Ibom Power, AES and ASCO, did not generate any megawatt as of 6am on Monday.

The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola, at the 29th Monthly Power Sector Meeting in Niger, said, “Those who know and who genuinely desire to solve problems in this industry do not need to be told that the most pressing challenge of the sector today lies at the distribution end.”

Senators sue AGF, DSS, police for alleged plot to remove Saraki

Two lawmakers, Senator Rafiu Adebayo and Senator Isa Misau, have sued the Attorney-General of the Federation, the police, the Department of State Services, the Senate and seven others in order to stop the attempts to remove Senate President Bukola Saraki.

Senators Adebayo and Misau, who are supporters of Saraki, instituted the fresh court action marked FHC/ABJ/CS/872/2018 before a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Monday.


Other defendants in the suit are: the majority and deputy majority leaders of the Senate, the Clerk of the Senate, the Deputy Clerk of the Senate, the Senate President, the Deputy Senate President and the Deputy Minority Leader.

In the originating summons filed on their behalf by Mahmud Magaji (SAN), the plaintiffs want the Federal High Court to determine whether in view of the provisions of Section 50(1) (a) and (2) of the 1999 Constitution, Saraki, who defected to another political party as a result of the division in his former party, can be made to vacate his office other than in accordance with Section 50 of the constitution.

Adebayo and Misau, who represent Kwara-South and Bauchi-Central senatorial districts respectively, also want the court to determine whether Saraki can be compelled to vacate his office on the grounds that he is not a member of the political party with a majority of senators in the Senate in view of the combined reading of Section 50 of the constitution and Order 3 Rule 8 of the Senate Standing Orders.

The court was also urged to determine whether the Senate President could be said to have vacated his office by virtue of Section 50(2) of the constitution when he had not ceased to be a member of the Senate or the Senate dissolved.

In a motion on notice filed along with the originating summons, the plaintiffs prayed the court for an order of interlocutory injunction restraining all the defendants (except the Senate, Senate President and Deputy Senate President) jointly and severally either by themselves, their agents, servants and privies from unlawfully removing the Senate President pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit.

They also prayed the court for another order of interlocutory injunction restraining the AGF and the Inspector-General of Police from unlawfully interfering with the lawful legislative duties of the Senate President pending the hearing and determination of their originating summons.

Besides, the plaintiffs asked for an order of interlocutory injunction stopping the IG and the DSS from harassing, intimidating, arresting or detaining the President of the Senate in respect of the lawful exercise of his duties pursuant to Section 50(1) of the constitution and another order directing parties in the case to maintain status quo pending the determination of the substantive matter.

The motion was predicated on seven grounds amongst which were that the agents of the IG and DSS had taken steps to flagrantly breach the provisions of Section 50 by employing their agents to disrupt the plenary of the Senate without recourse to the said provisions.


Another grounds were that the constitutional provision of removal of the Senate President does not empower the AGF, police and DSS to unlawfully interfere with the legislative duties of the Senate by causing a blockade at the premises of the National Assembly complex or using their agents to disrupt the lawful duties of the Senate.

In a 13-paragraph affidavit in support of the motion on notice and deposed to by Senator Isah Misau, he averred that the Senate was a body recognised and established by the 1999 Constitution vested with powers of making laws for the good governance and well-being of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The deponent averred that the Senate held a plenary sitting between July 24 and 27 and that it was presided over by its President and that at the end of the sitting members adjourned till September 25.

Misau claimed that the All Progressives Congress as a platform for the Senate President had been bedevilled by crises resulting in divisions and factionalisation at the federal, state and local government levels.

The Chairman of the Cross River State Sports Commission, Otuekong Orok Duke is worried that sports in Nigeria is being driven by poverty instead of well-articulated programmes for talent discovery and development.

Speaking at the maiden edition of the Sports Commission’s Football Clinic at the U. J. Esuene Stadium, Calabar, Duke said for years people went into sport because of poverty, adding it should not be so as sport was a universal game that brought people together while keeping the body and soul healthy.

“We should move away from the notion that poverty fires sports. This is something the government should step in and take over and not to allow sport in Nigeria to be driven by poverty,” he added.

He regretted that in Cross River, “we do not have enough funds to run sport as in the last five years, we have not been able to attend any sports festival.” He, however, assured that the state would be at the next youths sports festival in September in Ilorin “whether the state government sponsors or not. We will go out and solicit for funds.”

On the football clinic that was kicked off by the member representing Calabar/Odukpani Federal Constituency, Mr. Ita Mbura, Duke said, “this event in the next five years will take place in Calabar… the young ones are ready to do sports but need to be encouraged.He thanked Mbura, the member representing Akpabuyo/Bakassi/Calabar South Federal Constituency, Pastor Essien Ayi, Royal farms and others for sponsoring the football clinic, saying it would encourage youths to take active part in sports and move away from social vices.

Both Mbora and Ayi said they decided to sponsor the football clinic as a way of giving back to the society and at the same time promote sports in the state for the collective benefit of everyone.The clinic, which attracted over 250 children between the ages of six and 12, is expected to last for two weeks.

Dogara Seeks Accountability, Prudence in Maritime Sector

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara yesterday said accountability and prudent management of resources remained critical to making progress as well as meeting the various demands for improved infrastructure in the maritime sector of the economy.

He expressed dismay that the sector was yet to attain the desired and expected status of becoming the hub for international freight and trade in West Africa.

Speaking at the opening of a three-day investigative public hearing by the House Committee on Ports, Harbours and Waterways, chaired by Hon. Patrick Asadu (PDP, Enugu), he regretted that the maritime industry has failed to attract the required local and foreign investment in-flow which is proportionate to its contribution to both the Nigerian and West African economy, despite its great potential and enormous investment opportunities.


Quoting statistics from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) in March 2018, Dogara pointed out that Nigeria’s Ports dropped down the global ratings basically due to bad infrastructure.

He noted that major competitors in the region, including Port of Lome in Togo, Port of Dakar in Senegal, and the Port of Cotonou in Benin Republic, all delivered better efficient services than the Nigerian Ports.
“This is really not acceptable,” he said.

He identified some of the problems hindering the performance of the country’s ports to include bad infrastructure, high cost of doing business and low draught at a lot of our major waterways.
He reiterated the need to dredge the nation’s port channels to increase traffic to the various ports and invariably increase economic productivity.

Dogara said:”If we have cargoes going up north to places such as Kaduna, Kano and Maiduguri, such cargoes would not need to go through Lagos, which is already so congested.

“But for this to happen, the channels of other ports need to be dredged. Reports have it that the Lagos water channel is about 14.5 meters deep, while the Port Harcourt and Calabar channels are less than 10 meters deep, which limits their capacity to receive big cargo ships. This explains why there is so much congestion at the Lagos Port.

The speaker, however, expressed hope that the hearing will proffer lasting solutions to the problems.

A total of seven maritime related motions gave room for the public hearing, including Guaranteed Minimum Tonnage at the Nigeria Ports, Extra Budgetary Spending and other Financial Improprieties by Terminal Operators and Service Providers engaged by the Nigerian Ports Authority among others.

NNPC Targets 15,000MW Gas-based Power Generation in Three Years

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has disclosed it is targeting the supply of about five billion standard cubic feet per day (bcfd) of gas to Nigeria’s domestic market, from which about 15,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity could be generated in the next three years.

It also said Nigeria was poised to provide as much as 10 per cent of the world tradable fertiliser in no distance time, producing between seven and 10 metric tonnes per annum (mtpa) of fertiliser and 5mtpa of methanol amongst other petrochemical products that could be produced with the 5bcfd of gas.


Speaking at the recent the 42nd Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Nigerian Annual International Conference & Exhibition (NAICE) in Lagos, the Chief Operating Officer (COO) Upstream of NNPC, Mr. Bello Rabiu, said the country could leveraging its gas resources to diversify its economy from its overdependence on oil revenue.

Rabiu, noted there were seven critical gas development projects the NNPC was involved in, which when completed, would bring the domestic gas supply to a supply level of about 5bcsfd in the next three years.
He added, “With 5bcfd domestic gas supply, Nigeria will have sufficient gas to generate 15GW of power; 7–10mtpa of fertiliser; 10mtpa of other petrochemical; 5mtpa of methanol and 40mtpa of cement.”

He also explained that this was expected to result in the country’s gas market operating under a willing buyer – willing seller arrangement; ensure that up to five million jobs are created; grow Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) between $25 and $40 billion; and help her achieve import substitution worth $7 and $8 billion.

“Nigeria will become a hub for gas-based industries and net exporter of fertiliser, petrochemicals and methanol in a competitive global market, thus, generating foreign exchange earnings for the nation,” he explained, adding that, “Nigeria is now well positioned to supply almost 10 per cent of the world’s tradable fertiliser in a few years to come (Dangote, Indorama, Nagarjuna, and Brass).”

Also, NNPC’s Group Managing Director, Dr. Maikanti Baru, stated at the conference that the corporation’s decision to seek alternative financing models for funding its Joint Venture (JV) obligations has continued to restore confidence among investors and stimulate further Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) in industry.
Baru, explained that alternative financing has equally deepened local banks’ participation in the upstream sub-sector of the industry, adding that with sustainable funding, deep-water Production Sharing Contract (PSC) which currently accounted for 41 per cent of daily national oil production has risen tremendously.

According to him, to meet government’s expenditure and strategic focus, NNPC had to explore alternative financing, which he described as “important to the sustenance of the industry.
“To turn the wheel of the industry and ensure that funding doesn’t limit our growth, it is important we consider both the traditional and non-traditional funding options,” Baru stated.

He observed that traditionally, Nigeria had raised funds utilising equity or self-funding from cash-flow, commercial debt instrument or partner funding in form of Carry or Modified Carry Arrangement (MCAs).
He identified the non-traditional funding options to include contractor-financing or deferred payment, pension funds, private equity, Sovereign Wealth Funds, Export Credit Agencies (ECAs) and none-less Islamic and Sharia finance.
According to him: “There is need to sustain the industry for it to continue to deliver the much-needed revenue and provide the springboard for economic diversification. We must therefore keep the goose which lays the golden egg alive.

Why I Met With Obasanjo – Saraki

Saraki, speaking to newsmen after the meeting on Monday evening, said he was with Obasanjo to make up for his absence during the formal inauguration of the Presidential library held last year.

He said: ”You know I missed the official opening of the library and that is why I have decided to come and see the place and honestly it is beautiful we are very proud of what he has done here”.

When newsmen further questioned him on the crisis in the National Assembly and when the lawmakers will reconvene, Saraki kept mum and hurriedly entered his vehicle.

Governor Abubakar Bello of Niger State has warned government organisations in the state against outright rejection of corps members posted to them.

He gave the warning during the closing ceremony of the 2018 Batch ‘B’ orientation course of corps members in Paiko Local Government Area of Niger State.

Alhaji Mamman Musa, the state Commissioner for Water Resources, represented the Governor at the occasion.

Bello enjoined employers of labour to accept corps members posted to their organisations and provide them with decent accommodation for their one-year national service.

“We will not accept outright rejection of corps members by employers or organisations, you should ensure you accommodate all corps members posted to you and provide them with conducive environment,” he said.

The Governor then urged the corps members to strive to make positive contributions in their host communities.

He also called on them to accept their postings, make positive impact in their places of primary assignment and leave behind projects that would add value to the people of the state.

Earlier, Mrs Theresa Arokoyo, NYSC Coordinator in Niger, said that the skill acquisition and leadership training which corps members were exposed to during their orientation course would enable them to be self-reliant after service.

She advised corps members to see their service year as a period of sacrifice and adhere to the advice given to them by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) during the forthcoming general elections.

“I urge you to be of the highest degree of diligence, discipline and avoid any situation that might compromise your integrity.

“You must remain politically unbiased electoral officers throughout the electoral process.

“The nation believes in the ability of the scheme to ensure a credible election like your predecessors did, please do not betray the confidence reposed on the scheme,” she said.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and Seplat Petroleum Development Company Plc have signed five agreements to develop a gas production project aimed at delivering about 3.4 billion standard cubic feet of gas per day (bscfd) by 2020, a statement from the corporation has disclosed.

The statement explained that the new gas project was part of efforts by the NNPC to bridge the projected medium-term gas supply gap expected in Nigeria by 2020.

NNPC Group General Manager, Public Affairs, Mr. Ndu Ughamadu, said in the statement that the project called Assa North and Ohaji South (ANOH) gas development scheme was one of the Seven Critical Gas Development Projects (7CGDP) that would boost gas production and infrastructure development in the country.


The statement quoted NNPC Group Managing Director, Dr. Maikanti Baru, as saying that a special purpose vehicle known as ANOH Gas Processing Company (AGPC) was being promoted by both parties to develop, build, operate and maintain the ANOH gas processing plant, with an initial capacity of 300 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscf/d) of gas in Imo State.
According to him, NNPC would do everything possible to ensure that the project was successfully delivered on schedule within budget and to specification.

He stated that the project was designed as a world-class gas processing plant with the capacity to deliver up to 3.4 bscf of gas daily.

“Following the execution of Heads of Terms (HoT) by the Nigerian Gas Processing and Transportation Company (NGPTC) on behalf of the NNPC, Seplat and AGPC on December 19, 2017, the steering committee for the AGPC project has provided the leadership and broad guidance for the development and finalisation of the various commercial agreements required to underpin the project,” Baru said in the statement.

Similarly, the statement quoted the Chief Executive Officer of Seplat, Mr. Austin Avuru, to have described the ANOH gas processing plant as a landmark project which captures the essence of the gas infrastructure development initiative of the federal government.

Avuru expressed confidence that the AGPC would deliver on the project within the next 18 months and achieve its objective of being a key gas supplier to both the domestic and export market.

According to the statement, the MoU signed in this regards included the AGPC shareholders agreement among AGPC, NGPTC and Seplat; AGPC share subscription agreement between AGPC, NGPTC and Seplat; Wet Gas Sales and Purchase Agreement between NNPC, Seplat and AGPC; Gas Sale and Purchase Agreement between AGPC and Nigerian Gas Marketing Company (NGMC), and Gas Marketing Agreement between AGPC and NGMC.

A SPIRITUAL KINGDOM.

For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace (Romans 8:6).

In Christ, we’ve been born into a real, authentic, and functional spiritual kingdom. That’s where we live right now. We live in, and carry out our everyday activities from that spiritual kingdom. However, to enjoy the blessings that belong to you in that realm of life, you’re required to have adequate knowledge of the Word, understand, and function by the principles of the kingdom of God. 

Many Christians aren’t yet fully conscious that they’re in a spiritual kingdom; they’re only conscious of that which exists in the physical realm. Such people, for example, are hardly conscious of the myriads of angels with and around them. They’re yet to take advantage of the ministry of the Holy Spirit, as He speaks to them from within, and seeks to guide them in all the affairs of life; hence, they live ordinary lives. 

The Gospel of Jesus Christ is the Gospel of the spiritual life; life beyond the sense realm. The Bible says, “…to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace” (Romans 8:6). Anyone who believes in Jesus Christ has passed from death unto life; which means you’ve been automatically transferred from the domain of darkness, to the domain of life: the “Kingdom of His Love-son” (Colossians 1:13), and it’s a spiritual kingdom. You live in that kingdom now. 

Though you’re in the world, you’re not of this world. Therefore, you can’t afford to live by the principles of this physical world. True success is spiritual, and it’s based on spiritual principles. Become conscious of the spiritual realm, and control things from that realm. When you focus on and function from the realm of the spirit, nothing in this physical world will be able to hinder your success and victories in life.

CONFESSION
I’m alive to God, and to a world of endless possibilities and everlasting triumphs. I experience success always, as I live in and by the Word of God, playing by a different set of rules. I live and walk in the full consciousness of the spiritual Kingdom to which I belong, enjoying all that is mine in that realm of life, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

In his sermon ,the officiating pastor,Venerable W Ojebode prayed for the success of the candidate, stating that "the state needs a God fearing leader.

Chairman, Senate Committee on Navy, Senator Isa Hamma Misau, has stated that the Presidency should be ashamed that it is pushing the conspiracy script that top officials of the nation’s security apparatus are working for the Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki.

Reacting to the EFCC statement that debunked the allegations credited to the Senior Special Assistant to the President, Babafemi Ojudu, that the EFCC was working in tandem with Saraki, Misau said that both the APC Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole and Ojudu, were spinning the same conspiracy theory to hide the lack of coordination and discipline amongst the security agencies.

“The EFCC’s statement confirms our immediate reaction that both Ojudu and Oshiomhole have been reading from the same conspiracy script.

“Nigerians find it unthinkable that Magu, that the Senate refused to confirm — whose EFCC has also prosecuted Saraki for over 3 years at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) would now turn around and start working for this same Saraki. How is this possible?

“These people think that they can just wake up, think up conspiracy theories and try to sell it to Nigerians, but the public is smarter and more discerning than their shallow fictitious narratives", the Senator stated.

Misau also stated that the APC and Ojudu should be ashamed of indicting the Presidency in such an explicit fashion.

“In any case, shouldn't they be ashamed to even claim that the entire internal security institutions in the country are working for someone else other than the person that appointed them? “Additionally, at what point did they decipher this? Was it before the siege on the National Assembly or after?

“What this goes to show is that in their desperate bid to blame someone else for their crime and incompetence, these people no longer have a sense of shame,” the Senator said.

Misau further amplified the call for an independent judicial panel of inquiry into the National Assembly siege, stating that any other investigation would be seen as biased and flawed in the eyes of Nigerians and the international community.



“In this regard, we hereby reiterate the call for independent judicial panel of inquiry into the invasion. Any other such investigation into the matter would constitute another attempt by these same people to present a biased perspective to the assault on our nation’s democracy and its highest lawmaking body,” Misau stated.

The Senate President, Bukola Saraki, is currently on a private visit to former President Olusegun Obasanjo in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.


Mr Saraki arrived the home of his host located within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library on Monday evening.

The embattled senate president had last week also met with former military ruler, Ibrahim Babangida, in the latter’s home in Minna, Niger State.

Mr Saraki’s meeting with the past leaders is believed to be related to the 2019 elections. He recently defected from the ruling APC to the opposition PDP.

A woman has landed in a hospital after she was allegedly attacked by her ex-lover in Anambra state. It was gathered that the womanj identified as Nkiru Okoye had been formerly married, but broke up with her spouse, before falling in love with her ex-lover.

The young man in question is said to be younger than her, hence his family insisted that their son would never marry an older girl. The lady’s family also concurred, but the young man wouldn’t give up, it was alleged.

According to Tobenna Obiano, things got so bad when the lady insisted that they must path ways to respect their families and their excuse of age. But the young man insisted that if he doesn’t end up with the lady, no one else would have her.

It was alleged that he had once attacked her – the man had once sneaked into her room at night and tried to strangle her. Neighbors rescued her, but ignorantly, she never made any formal report either to the local vigilante or to the police.

After that, the young man sneaked in through the back door, and saw as his supposed girlfriend was about unlocking her door, he poured her a bowl of raw acid on her running down towards from her neck region, ear, back section and breast.

He poured a second one again on her, extending from her back down to all-over her buttocks and even towards her laps.

The lady has since been transferred from a hospital in Awka to an Orthopedic hospital in Enugu state ,where she’s currently being treated.

Niger State Environmental Protection Agency (NISEPA), has arrested and detained 159 stray animals across Minna, the Niger State capital.

The General Manager of the agency, Mr Lucky Barau, told the News Agency of Nigeria, on Saturday in Minna, that the agency task force made the arrest in two days.

He said that the animals, which consisted of goats and sheep were also arrested with their kids and lambs.

“These stray animals have wreaked havoc in many gardens in the metropolis; we cannot fold our arms and watch the gardens the state government had spent huge sum of money to beautify the city go into ruins. Many of them have caused accidents that resulted to death, especially with motorcycles as they ran into them often on the motorways.

“If you cannot take care of animals do not rear them, it is unreasonable for somebody’s animal to cause losses for individuals and the state; we are not going to continue to tolerate that,” he said.

Barau said that the agency does not seize animals but arrest them until the owners come around to pay a fine for the detained animal’s release.

He said that the agency was magnanimous enough to charge only N1, 000 on each animal, saying that if an individual had ten animals arrested, the fine will attract N10, 000.

Barau said that the fine was for the expenses the agency incurred in feeding and caring for the animal while in its custody.

“It is not that we want to make money from this, but it is punitive and deterrent, so that any other person will not do same. Owner of animals should be responsible for their animals and take full responsibility of them, it is wrong for animals to be left without chain,” he said.

“Anybody whose name appears more than three times will have the animal auctioned. I have also directed that none of the agency’s staff should buy auctioned animals, if they bring a proxy and we get to know they will face the consequence. We will not tolerate animals on the motorways, we will not accept that, we cannot have animals and humans cohabiting and struggling to use the road,” he warned.

About 37 members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) who just left the orientation camp in Ogun which ended today - were involved in motor accident on their way to Sango Otta area of the state.

The lone accident involving a white Civilian Coaster Bus occurred as a result of over speeding as the driver lost control of the vehicle before the crash. 

No one was killed in the crash.

19 adults (9 males and 10 females) were injured out of a total 37 Youth Corps Members in the vehicle.

The Injured victims were evacuated to FRSC Accident Emergency Clinic at Sagamu, though four of the victims with more serious injuries were referred for further medical treatment at Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH) Sagamu.

The FRSC Sector Commander Ogun State Command, Clement Oladele advised Youth Corps members to always caution their drivers especially during this raining season and that where such drivers refused caution - they should call FRSC toll free number 122 for the FRSC to take necessary disciplinary action against such erring drivers .

CAN replies VP Osinbajo on his comment that pastors do not preach against corruption, but on prosperity

The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, reacted to the recent comment made by acting President Yemi Osinbajo that many Pastors in Nigeria now preach more about Prosperity than against corruption.

Osinbajo while speaking at the 30th National Biennial Conference of the Students Christian Movement of Nigeria holding in Enugu over the weeknd, said many clergymen in Nigeria are now focused on preaching on prosperity rather than righteousness.

”“Very rarely do you hear our preachers talk about corruption from their pulpits. If a nation is not righteous nothing will help it.” the acting president had said
Reacting to Osinbajo’s comment, the president of the CAN, Rev. Samuel Ayokunle in a statement released by his media aide, Adebayo Oladeji, said although Osinbajo might have exclusive information for him to make the claim, the church had been speaking corruption in all facets but whether people are listening to their sermons is another thing entirely.
The statement in part reads
“Being a pastor, the acting president may know what we don’t know and he has a right to correct those whose teaching or preaching contradicts the scripture. What we know is that the church must speak against evil in the land, corruption inclusive. The church has been speaking against the perceived genocide in the country, insecurity of life and property, hypocrisy, nepotism, greediness, tribalism, favourism, treasury lootings, lopsided appointments, etc.
“These are all manifestation of corruption. Corruption goes beyond greed and diversion of public money into personal hands. Whether our leaders, politicians and civil servants are listening is another thing entirely. Those who have not been preaching against the evil in the country should heed the counsel of the acting president and the leadership of CAN in turn tasks those in the position of authority to be sensitive to the yearning of the church for peace, security, jobopportunities, good roads, affordable medical care, and an end to every form of hardship in the land.”

He also stressed the need to respect the rule of law in order for democracy to thrive in the country.

Kalu, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, said that any pronouncement from a properly constituted court of justice must be obeyed and complied with

Kalu spoke in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Sunday in Abuja.

According to Kalu, because the various tiers of government, individuals and corporate entities have no respect for the decisions of the courts, “we are making many unlawful things possible.

“If we Nigerians genuinely want democracy to endure, we should learn how to respect the laws of the land.
