Estranged wife of former Enugu State Governor, Mrs Clara Chime on Thursday asked the FCT High Court, Apo to grant her custody of her 10-year-old son.

Clara prayed the court during her response at the hearing of the petition filed by Sullivan Chime, seeking the dissolution of their 11 years marriage.

She informed the court that she was ready to divorced her husband and prayed that the custody of their son be given to her and child maintenance fee of N500,000 monthly.

Counsel to Clara, Mr Achibongu Iyeme, objected that the documents were not certified.

Clara also informed the court that she was depressed during her marriage because her husband only had marital relations with her only on their wedding night and never touched her so it led to her depressed condition.

Clara further denied any allegation of schizophrenia but said she only saw the CMD of neural psychiatric because her husband brought him home.

Justice Angela Otaluka ruled that documents were not admissible, she further adjourned the case till June 10 for continuation of hearing.

Igbo Man Becomes First Black Man To Be Elected Mayor In London .

A Nigerian of Igbo extraction, Ernest Ezeajughi, has made history by winning election as the first Black Mayor of the London Borough of Brent, United Kingdom.

Ezeajughi, a native of Anambra State, was elected Mayor on April 16, by the College of Councillors of Brent, London, and was sworn into office yesterday, Wednesday, May 1, 2019.

Prior to his election as Mayor, Ezeajughi, a strong member of the Labour Party, won election for a Councillor position representing Stonebridge ward at Brent Council in 2014.

He was re-elected again in 2018, retaining his seat all in the white-dominated political environment after a very keenly contested election. He was elected Deputy Mayor of Brent within a year.

After graduation in 1998 and completion of his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), he worked briefly in the private family business – Koval Linkworld Agencies Ltd – before migrating to England to join his wife.

In England, Ezeajughi obtained a Master’s degree in Science (M.Sc) from the prestigious Kings College, London. A Scientist by profession, he worked with Medicine and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).

A father of four children, Ezeajughi was one of the founding fathers of a major Nigerian political party, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) UK Chapter and was the Chairman in 2010-2012.

He thereafter joined UK politics and soon became a strong member of the Labour Party

Kogi Workers To Governor Yahaya Bello: Clear Unpaid Salaries Or Forget 2nd Term
User Avatar Forum: News
Posted by: Edoman - 05-02-2019, 10:13 AM - No Replies

Quote:The second term ambition of Yahaya Bello, the governor of Kogi State has been threatened by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

Mr Bello who was sworn in as the state governor in 2016 has the work-force body to battle with if he fails to clear off their wages before the state’s governorship election slated for November 2.

While the governor claims not to have paid salaries since this year, the workers are saying otherwise, insisting they have not been paid for over 30 months.

Despite the governor’s claim, the workers repeated their position today at the celebration of their day (May Day) in Lokoja, the state capital.

The chairman of the NLC in the state, Onu Edoka, said workers in the state will re-elect the governor if he pays up the wages they are being owed.

He said if the electoral body in the country will ensure their votes count, workers in the state will decide the next fellow to govern the state.

“If you pay our salaries, leave bonuses and implement our promotions, we assure you that we shall stand by you,” Mr Edoka told the governor represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Folashade Ayoade-Arike.

“If only the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) would make their votes count, workers would decide the next governor of the state on Nov. 2.

“Workers have the power to determine the next governor of the state and would prove it in the state governorship election slated for November 2, if only the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) would make our votes count,” he said.

Responding, Mr Ayoade-Arike stated that the state government owed workers five months salaries, saying the last was paid in November 2018.

The SSG also said the government would meet with labour leaders and decide on modalities to adopt for its implementation of the new N30,000 minimum wage.

State governors fuel insecurity to raise their security votes – EFCC boss, Ibrahim Magu, alleges

The acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Magu, has accused some state governors  of deliberately fueling insecurity in their states so as to increase their security votes.
The EFCC boss made this allegation when he spoke at the induction programme for returning and newly-elected state governors held at the Presidential Villa.

Quote:“We have also seen evidence of theft of public resources by some state governors –  cashing in on the insecurity in their states. Insecurity has also offered the required oxygen for corruption to thrive as evident in the $2.1bn arms procurement scandal involving top military commanders both serving and retired.” Magu said
The acting EFCC chairman pointed out that corruption has in no small measure aided the spread of insurgency in the North East as well as the insecurity in many parts in the Niger Delta.
Quote:“Mass poverty in the region, due in part to corruption by the ruling elite, is largely to blame for the ease with which the Islamists are able to recruit fighters to sustain their aggression against the Nigerian state. As an investigator, I am shocked by the quantum of resources stolen from the Niger Delta Development Commission by those who run the intervention agency.
It is so bad that even a mere personal assistant to a former Managing Director was charged with stealing over N3bn. Whether we like it or not, corruption and terrorism have become the twin evils, undermining our collective efforts to make Nigeria a truly great country.”

Daily Devotional for Thursday 2nd May

RHAPSODY OF REALITIES

THURSDAY, 2ND MAY.

OUR PERFECTION IS OF HIM.

Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect (Matthew 5:48).

You might have heard some people say, “No one is perfect; so don’t say you’re perfect.” Ask them why they say that, and you’d discover it’s the result of their own experiences or other people’s experiences. What does the Bible say? It says, “Be ye perfect even as your heavenly Father is perfect.” God will never ask us to do something He knows we couldn’t do. If He demands perfection of us in the earth, it means it’s possible.

When you study the Word, there’s no place that suggests to us the impossibility of perfection. Everything about God calls for perfection—exce
llence. The reason most people don’t think perfection is possible is that they don’t know what perfection is. Perfection is like success, which can be measured at different stages of your life, according to the set objectives, purpose, and goal. Perfection is measured according to the light, instruction or information that you have with respect to the underlying objectives.

In our opening verse, the word “perfect” derives from the Greek word “teleios” which is full-grown in maturity, blameless, unspotted; wanting nothing; a completeness. It refers to measuring your heart with the heart of God; and the way to do this is through the Word. This means that you do things as God would have you do them; you let your heart be like God’s. You think, love, and forgive as God does, because you have His heart.

Furthermore, another reason many believe perfection is unachievable is that they use their religious minds to judge or measure what it is. Think about it: if in Christ Jesus, we’ve been qualified to become sharers and partakers of His life, His grace, and His righteousness, it means our perfection is also of Him. Jesus was the perfect One; the Bible says He obeyed God even unto death. He qualified before God and gave us His qualification.
So, our qualification for righteousness and perfection is of Him. All you have to do to be perfect in His sight is to accept and affirm His qualification. His vicarious death was to make you perfect: present you holy, unblameable and unreproveable in His sight (Colossians 1:22). Now, live accordingly.

PRAYER

Dear heavenly Father, I thank you for qualifying me to be perfect, righteous, holy, unblameable and unreproveable in your sight. I’m yielded to the Spirit of perfection and excellence that’s at work in me. Therefore, my words, thoughts, and actions are detailed and flawless. I think, talk, and exude excellence, to the glory and praise of your matchless Name. Hallelujah!

Buhari Can Order Army To Produce His Certificates If They Exist – Atiku
User Avatar Forum: News

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the PDP Presidential candidate in 2019 election who reacted to claims by President Muhammadu Buhari that his academic certificates are with the Nigerian Army, has stated that he can order the army to produce them if they exist. Atiku who countered the response Buhari gave to their petition filed before the Election Petitions Tribunal,  said  if it was true that  the certificates existed, Buhari as the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces could order the army  to produce them.

The PDP Presidential candidate who said he attached his academic certificates to the Form CF001  he submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission, had urged the tribunal to declare them the authentic winner of the February 23 presidential  election,  insisting Buhari did not possess the educational qualifications he claimed to have in his INEC Form CF001.

The petitioners also stated that “the purported training and courses”, which Buhari claimed placed him “head and shoulders above” Atiku regarding  educational qualifications to contest the presidential election, “did not culminate in the issuance of any certificates he claimed in his  INEC Form CF001”. They also  described Buhari’s claim of being head and shoulders above Atiku as “erroneous”.

Boko Haram terrorists do not earn more than the Nigerian soldier- Nigerian Army says

The Nigerian Army has denied claims that Boko Haram terrorists earn more than its officers.

A member of the Presidential Committee on the North East Initiative (PCNI), Dr. Sidi Ali Mohammed, at a function in Abuja on Monday 29th, said that Boko Haram members receive as much as $3,000 daily which he claims serves as payment for carrying out terrorist attacks in the North-East since 2014. Read here.

In a statement released this afternoon, the Nigerian Army said Mohammed's claim is false. Read the statement below

Quote:The attention of the Nigerian Army has been drawn to a publication on Sahara Reporters and other social media platforms, to a false claim credited to one Doctor Sidi Ali Mohammed, a member of the Presidential Committee on the North East Initiative. In it, he alleged that the criminal terrorist group members earn as much as $3,000 daily, as against the Nigerian soldier who is paid N1,000 only. This is not true, pure lie and highly irresponsible comment coming from a supposedly knowledgeable person of his calibre.
It is also criminal and preposterous to compare the gallant soldiers of our Armed Forces with the rag tag terrorists’ criminal gang. Indeed there is no such basis at all between the outlawed criminal terrorist who commits crime against humanity and our highly patriotic, courageous and brave soldiers whose sacrifice cannot be quantified.
Over time, we have been alerting the world that the menace of Boko Haram terrorism is being aided and abetted by sympathizers’ such as Doctor Sidi Ali Mohammed. He must have been associated with the terrorists’ group beyond what he may want the public to know for having the knowledge of how much a terrorist earns per day to commit atrocities against fellow Nigerians and other innocent people including women and children. His statement could be part of the deliberate attempt to demoralise the patriotic soldiers serving their fatherland so that the terrorists will take advantage of it. It is also a way of swaying the gullible youths to believe the lies of Boko Haram terrorists as being peddled by him.
Therefore, we are calling on all Nigerians to discountenance the statement credited to Doctor Sidi Ali Mohammed; while we take necessary steps to formally report him to the appropriate authorities to further substantiate these unfounded allegations.
We would like to assure the public that the Nigerian Army would remain resolute and focused in the fight against terrorism and insurgency in our great nation and no amount of distraction or terrorists’ propaganda will dissuade it.

IBEDC raises alarm over vandals tampering with electricity facilities

The Chief Operating Officer of Ibadan Electricity Distribution Commission (IBEDC), Engr. John Ayodele has said activities of vandals tampering the Disco’s facilities are preventing it from tending customers’ needs.
He also condemned the building of houses, shops and relaxation spots under power lines, bypassing of meters by 70 percent of Nigerians, saying that prosecuting all defaulters in the law courts will make the courts treat electricity defaulters’ cases alone at the expense of other critical issues.
Ayodele spoke in Ibadan at the stakeholders' engagement and press parley to mark the commencement of safety week of the IBEDC and the World Safety and Health at Work day under the theme: “Safety and Health and The Future of Work”.

He said people must be aware of the dangers of living under power lines and breaching electricity cables to them and their family, adding that it is sad that most Nigerians willingly like to break the law than adhere to them.
“Safety is a factor in life and people must know this. We are dealing with people’s lives and we must provide safety for them. The power lines range from 11,000 volts to 33,000 to 333,000 volts and the key issue is that if you live under high tension wire, you are living under a death threat, which is as good as staying in Kirikiri awaiting the noose of the hangman and people who sleep and find it convenient under such lines to do trade should know that it’s dangerous and they should desist from it”, he asserted.
He attributed the practice of lawlessness of most Nigerians to the loss of value system in the country, praising officials of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for being helpful at protecting some of their equipment across its five regions of operations.

He said they are in various strategic discussions with different stakeholders on how to curb the destruction of their properties and are ready to heighten protection.
The COO said the safety discussion is not for customers alone but also for staff as he said everybody must be safety conscious while working on the electricity poles, as the management has realized that staff also fail to follow isolation rules while on duty which most times cause fatal accidents.

The Chief Technical Officer, IBEDC, Engr. Ade Ayileka appeal to people to be calm and report any electrical issue to the nearest IBEDC office instead of engaging local electricians that will expose the whole community to risks due to illegal connection and tampering of the cables which their knowledge can't afford them to understand.

The HSE consultant to IBEDC, Ampak Nigeria limited, Lead Health, Safety and Environmental Consultant, Mrs. Kemi Ajakaiye said the success of any business is to ensure safety in all facet which will go a long way in making IBEDC achieve the ISO 45001 certification.
World Day for Health and Safety was initiated by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) because every day, 6,300 people die as a result of occupational accidents or work-related diseases – more than 2.3 million deaths per year.
317 million accidents occur on the job annually; many of these resulting in extended absences from work. The human cost of this daily adversity is vast and the economic burden of poor occupational safety and health practices is estimated at 4 percent of global Gross Domestic Product each year.

Breaking! Caster Semenya loses landmark case against rules regulating testosterone in female athletes
[Image: 5cc976e57fe6a.jpg]
South African Olympic champion and intersex athlete, Caster Semenya,  lost her landmark case against rules regulating testosterone in female athletes.

Recall the double Olympic champion who has dominated 800m running in the last decade, fought regulations imposed by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) which aimed to compel 'hyperandrogenic' athletes — or those with 'differences of sexual development' (DSD) — to lower their testosterone levels if they wished to compete as women.

According to Daily Mail, the IAAF argued that the rules were essential to preserve a level playing field to ensure all female athletes can see 'a path to success'.
CAS said in a statement on Wednesday: 'By majority, the CAS panel has dismissed the requests for arbitration considering that the claimants were unable to establish that the DSD regulations were 'invalid'.
'The panel found that the DSD regulations are discriminatory, but the majority of the panel found that, on the basis of the evidence submitted by the parties, such discrimination is a necessary, reasonable and proportionate means of achieving the IAAF's aim of preserving the integrity of female athletics in the restricted events.'
The Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, Switzerland, heard a week of arguments in the case in February.
Going by the judgment, female athletes such as Semenya must now take testosterone suppressants like the contraceptive pill to stay under the permitted level to continue competing as a woman in any running event between the 400m and the mile.

Bread Price May Rise By 10%
User Avatar Forum: Market Place
Posted by: Edoman - 05-01-2019, 03:19 PM - No Replies

The price of bread and other flour eatables may soon rise by 10 percent following a recent N600 increase on the price of flour.

Flour millers raised the price of a bag of flour by N600 last March, resulting in a bag selling at N10,700 and N11,900 instead of the former between N10,200 and N11,300.

Tumba Turi, the National President of the Association of Master Bakers and Caterers of Nigeria (AMBCN), told Daily Trust on phone yesterday in Maiduguri. “Our members constitute 80 percent of the consumers of the flour produced by the millers, but they increased the price of the commodity without consulting us,” Sir Dominic stressed his lamentation.

“Most bakeries across the country are closing down now as a result if the price increase,” he said, calling on the federal government to prevail of the flour millers to reverse the price increase, warning, “if the increase is not reversed, we may be compelled to raise the price of bread and other baked-flour eatables by 10 percent.” The AMBCN president complained: “When the USD exchanged for N500 a bag of flour was N11,300; yet now with the USD exchanging for N360 a bag was still N11,300 even before the recent N600 increase.”

Bukar Mustapha, the Borno State Chairman of AMBCN said: “We know that the consumers of baked products will protest nationwide if we raise the price of our products, but we may have to do so if government does not prevail on the millers to reverse their increase.

He added that Zamfara State with 203 murder cases topped the national prevalence rate, Kaduna State followed closely with 112 reported cases while 90 people were killed in Benue State. According to him, most of the murder cases recorded in the North are linked to banditry and communal violence.  In relation to banditry, he said, a total of 175 deaths were reported between January and April this year with Zamfara State topping the list with 104 reported cases, followed by Katsina State with 21 killed by bandits and Sokoto State with 19 cases.

On kidnappings, the IGP said 546 or 79.8 per cent of the national total were recorded in the three northern geopolitical zones.  He said the highest zonal prevalence rate occurred in the North-West where 365 persons were reportedly kidnapped within the period under review.

Quote:“This is followed by the North-Central geopolitical zone where 145 persons were kidnapped. It is pertinent to mention that Zamfara State has the highest national kidnap rate with 281 victims in what has been directly linked to the activities of bandits in the state. Equities Market Sheds 1.22% On Sustained Profit Taking

The Nigerian equities market yesterday shed 1.22 per cent, causing market capitalisation to dip below the N11 trillion mark on sustained profit taking.

The All Share Index (ASI) shed 361.32 absolute points, representing a dip of 1.22 per cent to close at 29,159.74 points. Similarly, the market capitalisation shed N136 billion to close at N10.959 trillion.

Yesterday’s performance was influenced by price depreciation in medium and large capitalised stocks, among which are, Nestle Nigeria, Dangote Cement, Stanbic IBTC Holdings, Cement Company of Northern Nigeria (CCNN) and NASCON Allied Industries.

Analysts at Cordros Capital Limited noted that “In the absence of a positive catalyst, we guide investors to trade cautiously in the short term. However, stable macro-economic fundamentals and compelling valuation remain supportive of recovery in the mid-to-long term.” Analysts at APT Securities and Funds Limited said that “The NSE-ASI extends negative outlook amidst good fundamentals. However, positive first quarter result had an ample effect on company’s stock prices.

Therefore, there is still room for more up days. Investors are thereby encouraged to take a medium to long term position in fundamentally justifiable stocks.” However, market breadth was positive with 26 gainers against 19 losers. Japaul Oil & Maritime Services, UACN Property Development Company and Caverton Offshore Support Group recorded the highest price gain of 10 per cent, each to close at 33 kobo, N1.65 and N2.97, per share. Forte Oil followed with a gain of 9.97 per cent, to close at N35.30, while Dangote Flour Mills rose by 9.94 per cent to close at N18.80, per share. On the other hand, Cutix led the losers’ chart by 9.76 per cent, to close at N1.85, per share.

Goldlink Insurance followed with a decline 9.09 per cent to close at 40 kobo, while CCNN declined by 8.79 per cent to close at N14, per share. Unity Bank declined by 5.88 per cent to close at 80 kobo, while NASCON Allied Industries down by 4.74 per cent, to close at N18.10, per share. Also, the total volume traded went up by 91.51 per cent to 543.92 billion units, valued at N8.2 billion, and exchanged in 4,682 deals.

CCNN traded with 132.33 million shares valued at N1.86 billion. FBN Holdings followed with 68.78 million shares worth N497.25 million, while Unilever Nigeria traded 50.47 million shares valued at N1.56 billion. Guaranty Trust Bank traded 41.44 million shares valued at N1.38 billion, while Dangote Flour transacted 37.88 million shares worth N712.1 million.

Oil Prices Dip Further On Expectations Of OPEC Output Raise

Published 1 min ago on 1 min ago By Chika Izuora Lagos Oil prices went down further yesterday on expectations that rising output from the United States and the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) would offset most of the shortfall expected from U.S. sanctions on Iran, but analysts said markets remained tight. A stutter in China’s factory and servicing industries in April also weighed on crude prices, traders said, as it suggested Asia’s biggest economy is still struggling to regain traction.

Brent crude futures were at $71.75 per barrel down 29 cents, or 0.4 per cent, from their last close, while the U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures were at $63.35 per barrel, down 15 cents, or 0.2 per cent from their previous settlement. Oil prices surged by around 40 per cent between January and April, lifted by supply cuts led by the Middle East-dominated producer club of OPEC as well as by U.S. sanctions on producers Iran and Venezuela.

But prices came under downward pressure late last week after U.S. President Donald Trump openly pressured OPEC and its de-facto leader Saudi Arabia to raise output to meet the supply shortfall caused by the tightening Iran sanctions. Stephen Innes, head of trading at SPI Asset Management, said the producer group “will want to avoid at all cost oil prices surging to levels that will trigger demand devastation, (while) it is clearly in OPEC’s best interest to maintain a solid floor on prices”.

CAN- Zainab Aliyu Released, Are Some Nigerians More Important Than Others?
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion

The Christian Association of Nigeria, Northern State chapter, has reacted to the release of Zainab Aliyu, the Nigerian lady who was wrongly detained in Saudi Arabia for trafficking Tramadol.

In a statement released by its public relations officer, Rev. Joseph Hayab, the Christian body while celebrating Zainab’s release, expressed concerns over the continued detention of Leah Sharibu.

Reverend Hayab in the statement, said he is forced to ask if some Nigerians are more important than others since the Federal government was fast in ensuring the safe return of Zainab.

The statement in part reads

CAN Northern states rejoices with the parents of Zainab Aliyu and the government of our country for securing her release after she was arrested and detained in Saudi Arabia for allegations of drug trafficking.

It is sad that many innocent Nigerians are suffering for a crime they know nothing about. This prompt effort by government is commendable and should be sustained for all and in the future, because this is what we want to see from our leaders in this country.

But as we rejoice about this development, we are also compelled to ask this important question: Are all Nigerians equal or some are more equal than others?

We are aware that many innocent citizens of our country have been arrested, some killed and others are still in detention; but we have not heard any directives from Mr. President to his Attorney General to take action about them with this kind of urgency.

If we want our citizens to be proud of their government and country, then we need to show equal concern about what happens to everyone in this country. We cannot also celebrate the release of Zainab and forget Leah Sharibu who did not commit any crime but has been in captivity for over a year now.

We, therefore, appeal to President Buhari to direct his security agencies to double their efforts and get Leah released and reunited with her parents. Leah, too, wants to enjoy the protection of her leaders”.

Suspects recount how they killed two Bureau de change operators and threw their bodies into a septic tank in Lagos after collecting thier N1.6m

Members of a criminal gang recently arrested by operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad attached to the Lagos State Police Command, have recounted how they lured two Bureau de change operators identified as Yakubu Musa and Hassan Umoru, to an uncompleted building in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State, collected their N1.6 million, killed them and then threw their bodies into a septic tank on March 14th.
According to a statement from the state police command  the duo were declared missing by their colleagues after they failed to return to their office. The matter was reported to the police and during investigations, three suspects – Oluwatosin Olarewaju, Mayowa Olawuni and Babatunde Idris, were arrested in connection with the crime.
During interrogation, Olanrewaju said himself and their leader identified as Pencil, who is currently at large, planned the deal.

Quote:“Our leader, Pencil, and I planned the deal. Pencil said I should convince the operators to come that an Alhaja wanted to buy $10,000. The operators came on a motorcycle and called us from Trailer Park bus stop, Odogunyan. Pencil asked another motorcycle rider to take the operators to a boys’ quarters around Odogunyan. By the time I joined them at the boys’ quarters, I met them lying down with their hands bound. Pencil asked me to lie on the floor as well to make it look like I did not have a hand in the plan.
Pencil told them that the Alhaja they came to meet owed him $10,000 and that his gang came to collect the money. They beat up the operators and I also received my fair share of the beating to make it look real. The operators begged Pencil to stop beating them; that they would give him money for their freedom. Pencil instructed them to transfer the money into an account. But when he called to know if the money had been paid, the account holder said no.” he said
Olanrewaju said Pencil changed the game plan and killed the operators to cover up.
Quote:“At the point that Pencil changed the plan, he threatened to kill me alongside the operators if he did not receive an alert on the payment. He said he suspected I was pulling pranks by asking the person at the other end not to reveal that he had received the alert. One of the operators then suggested that another account should be given to him to pay into. That was when I contacted a nurse who treated me when I was sick. The BDC operators paid in N1.6m to that account. By 8pm same day, Pencil and the gang members tore the operators’ clothes and used them to cover their mouths. When I asked him why he was doing that, he asked if I wanted to teach him his job. He took one of the operators to the backyard and later sent for the second one. He shot both of them dead and said that was the only way to cover our tracks since the operators already knew me.
“Afterwards, we contacted the nurse and she withdrew N500,000 initially. She later gave us another N500,000 and a balance of N470,000. I got N340,000 as my share of the deal.” he said
The police says they are on the trail of the leader and that once he is apprehended, they will all be charged to court.

Nigerian Senators, Reps To Pocket N23․7 Billion As Gratuity, Allowances
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion
Posted by: Edoman - 05-01-2019, 09:27 AM - No Replies

April 30, 2019 Kemi Busari
Nigerian lawmakers have allocated N23.7 billion as severance gratuity for outgoing lawmakers of the National Assembly.

The sum will also cover allowances for incoming legislators, their aides, funds for National Assembly induction and inauguration of the 9th Senate.

The benefit was captured as a separate line item in the 2019 appropriation bill passed by the lawmakers on Tuesday.

The amount was broken down to N23, 678, 770, 079 in the bill.

Details of the disbursement were not made available.

The Senate President, Bukola Saraki, had on April 12 released details of the 2018 National Assembly budget in a tweet.

In the summary page, the 45-page document showed that N139.5 billion was budgeted for the National Assembly in 2018.

Of this sum, N35 billion was allocated to the Senate, while the House of Representatives got N57 billion.

About N10 billion was budgeted for legislative aides, the National Assembly Office got N15 billion and the National Assembly Commission received N2 billion.

About N4.4 billion was allocated to the National Assembly Legislative Institute and N1 billion was appropriated for the service-wide vote of the legislature.

The disclosure came amidst pressure from Nigerians for the National Assembly to make its spending public.

Despite this, however, the National Assembly failed to release figures of line items in its 2018 budget.

‘Reasons for huge severance package’

The chairman, Senate Committee on Appropriation, Danjuma Goje gave reasons for the increment.

Presenting the committee’s report on Tuesday, Mr Goje said such package only comes up once in every four years.

“There is a slight increase in the budget deficit. This is as a result of the provision for severance benefits of the outgoing legislators and legislative aides, the induction/orientation and inauguration of new legislators, all of which occur once in four years, but were inadvertently not captured in the 2019 budget proposal.

“There was also the need to provide more fund for the security and intelligence agencies to deal with additional, emerging, unforeseen challenges in the country,” he said.

The 2019 budget proposal was passed with an increase from N8.83 trillion proposed by President Muhammadu Buhari to N8.916.

RHAPSODY OF REALITIES

WEDNESDAY, 1ST MAY.

THE VALUE OF WORDS

But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned (Matthew 12:36-37).

The greatest gift given to human beings is the gift of speech. I would to God every person on the face of the earth knew that! Blessed is the man or woman who has discovered this profound reality! Think about it: the world was made by words. All of creation is the result of words; all of God’s blessings are delivered by and through words. When God made it possible for man to use words, He gave man the greatest gift possible, because that’s what makes us like God.

God creates with words. When the earth was a chaotic mass, and darkness was upon the face of the deep, God didn’t enlist or engage the angels for a ground-breaking or earth-reconstruction project; He spoke words. He spoke creation into being in Genesis 1. Therefore, having made us in His image (to look like Him), and in His likeness (to function like Him), we create with words just like Him.

The Kingdom of God,to which we belong,is a Kingdom of words;therein,we live and reign by words. It’s about what you say. If you talk right, your life will be right. If you talk negatively, your life will be in jeopardy. Proverbs 15:4 says, “A wholesome tongue is a tree of life: but perverseness therein is a breach in the spirit.” Proverbs 18:21: “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.” The Lord Jesus further emphasizes this in Mark 11:23, saying, “You shall have what you say.” Recall in the Book of Genesis that God was called the “Voice”; the voice of the Lord was heard walking in the garden in the cool of the day (Genesis 3:8).Voice is nothing without speech or words. When you understand this, you’ll never speak empty, inoperative words. You’ll use words correctly. You’ll only speak words of blessings, words of life, words that build and lift others; words that inspire faith, hope, and love in others.

CONFESSION

I speak wholesome,life-giving and excellent words;words that are consistent with the glorious life I have in Christ.I walk in health, strength, and vitality. I make supernatural progress,I win always, and I’m productive in all that I do.Glory to God!

Ephesians 4:29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.

1 Peter 3:10-11 For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile: Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it.

Matthew 12:36-37 NIV But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.”

#TALKINGSESSION

1ST MAY.

KINDLY SAY THESE WORDS OUT LOUD

Thanks be unto God who gives me the victory in all things, through our Lord Jesus Christ! I reign and rule over circumstances. Success is in my spirit. I walk in excellence, righteousness, and prosperity. Christ is in me; therefore, there’s glory, honour, and beauty
in my life.

The peace of God which surpasses all understanding keeps my heart and mind, in Christ Jesus. Good things are coming to me today from everywhere! I refuse to worry about anything, for the Lord has made all things mine! His joy is expressed lavishly through me today in every place, in Jesus’ Name. Amen!

Businessman arraigned for N50m bitcoin fraud in Kaduna State

The Kaduna Zonal office of EFCC has arraigned one Joseph Adigizi Anthony before Justice Mallong Peter of the Federal High Court sitting in Kaduna, Kaduna State for a N50 million fraud.

His journey to the dock began when the Kaduna office of the EFCC received a petition alleging that he defrauded members of the public using a business proposal, in which he lured them to invest in Bitcoin through a platform called Bitworld Centre. He promised them good returns on their investment.

A petitioner had alleged that she sold her properties and collected loan from a Microfinance Bank to raise the sum of N1,739,000 (One Million Seven Hundred and Thirty Nine Thousand Naira), which the defendant directed her to pay into his personal bank accounts. She later discovered that the business was a fraud. However, efforts to recover her money proved abortive.

He was on April 30, 2019 charged with a five-count charge.

Quote:One of the counts reads: "That you, Joseph Adigizi Anthony, sometimes in 2018 at Kaduna within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court did with intent to defraud through your personal Guaranty Trust Bank and Access Bank accounts over N50,000,000 (Fifty Million Naira) credit turnover as collective investment deposits from one Salome Ambi Mamman and other members of the public by falsely accepting deposits for an unregister business venture with the Security and Exchange Commission of Nigeria called "BITWORLD" using financial proposal documents serving as a "Trainer Bitclub Advantage" and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 1(1)(a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offence Act, 2006 and punishable under Section 1(3) of the Same Act."
He pleaded "not guilty" to the charges. Prosecuting counsel, S.H. Sa'ad urged the court to fix a date for the commencement of trial while he prayed the defendant be remanded in prison. "We are ready to commence with the trial, and we have two witnesses already in court," Sa'ad said.

Defence counsel, Chiedu Gwam, informed the court, that he was not ready for the commencement of trial and pleaded with the court to grant his client bail.

Justice Mallong, however, adjourned to May 13, 2019 for hearing of bail application and commencement of trial. He ordered that the defendant be remanded in prison custody.

Man docked for killing wife over her sexual demand

Quote:by Shola O'Neil and Tayo Ajayi

A 46-year-old man has been remanded in prison custody in Port Harcourt, Rivers state, for allegedly murdering his wife in the heat of a quarrel over the victim’s demand for sex.

A chief magistrate ordered the remanded of the suspect, Ifeanyi Nwokolo, after he reportedly killed his wife, Ijeoma Nwokolo on April 6, because she demanded for sexual pleasure on the fateful while he was preparing for church vigil.

It was gathered that the couple had lived Rumuigbo area of the city before the fateful, when they fought over the wife’s demand that the man made love to her before leaving the house.

“We learnt that they had misunderstanding because Mrs. Ijeoma Nwokolo asked her husband to have sex with her on the fateful day, but the man was uncooperative because he said he had to attend church vigil service and could not indulge in the act.

“In the course of the argument, the husband pushed the woman away but he must had pushed her too hard, as she fell and hit her head on the concrete wall in their bathroom,” a usually reliable police source told our reporter.

Those familiar with the case said when the women fell, the man thinking that his wife was feigning injury, carried and laid her on the bed before leaving for the church vigil.

“It was later when he met the woman still as he left her on the bed that he raised alarm and went to the police station to report the case. He was arrested and detained.”

The charge was not read to the suspect when he was arraigned on Monday, because the magistrate court lacked jurisdiction to hear the case.

The file was sent to the Department of Public Prosecution for advice.

Magistrate Andrew Jaja ordered that the accused person should be remanded in prison custody, before adjourning the case till June 13,

How Market? – Dino Melaye Sneers Akpabio

Quote:Dino Melaye, lawmaker representing Kogi West at the Senate has sneered his colleague, Godswill Akpabio, representing Akwa Ibom North West.

Mr Melaye's action is contained in a post he shared through his Instagram page with a photo of himself and the former governor of Akwa Ibom State to buttress his point.

Messrs Melaye and Akpabio were in the same party until last year August when the former governor defected from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

While joining the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC), Akpabio resigned his position as Senate Minority Leader, a position given to him by the PDP during the formation of the 8th Senate.

Although Melaye did not state why he sneered his colleague, POLITICS TIMES gathered his action might not be unconnected to the failed ambition of Akpabio to return to the red chamber.

Akpabio, prior to the 2019 general election had promised his party that his state will be the first to be snatched from the opposition party.

On the election day, he not only failed to deliver the State to the APC as promised, the lawmaker lost his re-election bid to return to the red chamber.

Sharing a photo of him and Akpabio, Melaye said: “Akpabio How Market?”

Sex Worker: Task Force Members Had Sex With Some Ladies & Released Them In Abuja

Says they released other suspects after having affairs with them

Quote:By Ademola Adegbite - Abuja

IT was a show of shame, on Monday in Abuja, as one of the arrested sex workers by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) openly told the Mobile Court that some task force members had “sex” with their colleagues and released them illegally before the day of judgement.

The drama started immediately after eight of the suspects, who were arraigned at the mobile court, alighted from the task force vehicle.

One of the suspects, who simply identified herself as Comfort Abbah, lamented that only eight out of over 30 people arrested were brought before the magistrate.

According to her, “we were more than 30 that were arrested by the task force. The task force members after having sex with some of the girls then released them. We are here because nobody came to get us out.”

It will be recalled that the sex workers were arrested at various night clubs and red light zones within the territory.

The crack midnight operations carried out by a combined task force team of the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) and the Social Development Secretariat (SDS) were said to have resulted to the arrest of over 30 sex workers and nude dancers.

However, the suspects’ protest did not stop the arraignment as the prosecution counsel, Barrister Eze Eze read the charges against the suspects before the magistrate who was already seated to hear the matter.

After reading the charges of dancing Unclad and causing public nuisance which the prosecution counsel said violated section 35 of the AEPB Act, four of the suspects pleaded guilty, while other four said they were not guilty of the offence.

The presiding Magistrate, Mrs. Idayat Akanni told the suspects, who pleaded guilty that the offences attract N5, 000 fine or six months imprisonment. Following a plea for mercy by the suspects, the magistrate reduced the fine to N3, 000 which they paid and regained their freedom.

And for those who pleaded not guilty, the court adjourned the matter till April 30th for further hearing, while she granted them bail in the sum of N10, 000 each and one surety in like sum.

Meanwhile, the Acting Secretary, Social Development Secretariat, Hajia Safiya Umar, though did not disclose what happened before some of the arrested sex workers were illegally released by members of the task force, she admitted that there was a compromise that must be investigated and punished.

Umar noted that 32 girls were arrested at various red light zones in the city on Friday by the task force which she led in the operation, she expressed shock that her staff illegally released 27 without her approval.

“I must be honest with you, I have been very disappointed because we carried out the arrest 32 girls on Friday. My staff decided to give out 27 of them without my knowledge. When I got wind of that I ordered them to find and return the girls. Following that order, they went out on Saturday and arrested a different set of girls and mixed up with the remaining ones,” she lamented.

APC Can’t Win Kogi With Bello As Candidate, Party Stakeholders Tell Buhari
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion
Posted by: Edoman - 04-30-2019, 08:00 PM - No Replies

Quote:Yekini Jimoh in Lokoja

To Ahead of the November 2 governorship election in Kogi State, an All Progressives Congress (APC) group, Kogi APC Stakeholders Forum, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari and the national body of the party not to foist the incumbent Governor Yahaya Bello on them as its candidate, else the party will lose the election.

This is coming as the state branch of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria has suspended its industrial action embarked upon in December, 2018, following the intervention of the National Judicial Council (NJC).
The group revealed that the Kogi State governor has received a total sum of N344 billion for the 38 months he has been in charge of the state and still owes salaries, pensions and gratuities without any visible capital projects on ground anywhere in the state.
Describing Bello as non-performing and violent, the group stated that the governor has damaged President Buhari’s image and goodwill and that of the party, given his capacity to be so cruel to his fellow citizens of the state.
A copy of the letter sent to THISDAY and signed by its Chairman of the forum, Senator Alex Kadiri, stated that attempting to foist the non- performing governor as candidate by the party will be a great national disservice and will lead to the loss of the state to the opposition in the forthcoming governorship election.
The group lamented that despite the several committees set up to address the excesses of the governor, none of its recommendations were made public or implemented.

“We will like to restate that Governor Bello has traumatised, inflicted poverty and fear on our people. People who dare to raise their voice to complain or protest this mistreatment have been summarily killed or intimidated to the extent that a reign of terror is foisted on the people of the state.
“The APC, of which you are the leader, must have the courage to say NO to Bello’s desire to remain Governor of Kogi State for history will judge all of us for all our actions and inactions where and when we had the authority and opportunity to effect a positive change in the affairs of men.

“Citizens of Kogi State, regardless of our party affiliations, are not slaves to Yahaya Bello and will say no to his continued stay in office for the following reasons: Unpaid salaries, pensions and gratuities for Kogi workers, wasting and fraudulent use of funds that have accrued to Kogi State since inception of the APC administration of Yahaya Bello, the creation of insecurity in Kogi State. Our state is awash with guns and other instruments of violence, imported into Kogi State by Bello and his appointees”.
The group further stated that for the past 38 months, including February 2019, Bello had not paid full salaries to the workers of Kogi State, despite the fact that the state received full allocation from federation account as detailed in a report they got from the Federal Ministry of Finance.

The group further argued that even without bailout and other funds received outside statutory allocation, Bello could have still paid all salaries, including pensions without conducting multiple screening and inflicting pains on Kogi State and local government workers.
Meanwhile, the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria, Kogi State Branch, has suspended its industrial action embarked upon in December, 2018, following the intervention of the NJC.
The pronouncement was made through a communique issued at the end of the union’s emergency meeting held yesterday in Lokoja, the state capital.
In a communiqué titled: ‘Suspension of Strike,’ which was signed by Emmanuel Waniko and Sule Suberu, Chairman and Assistant Secretary, respectively, the union appreciated “the members for their patriotism, resilience and their absolute support to the course of this struggle for the past four months in the face of untold hardship.

“Fellow members, as you all know, various mediators, including the Kogi State Elders Forum, traditional rulers, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Jama’atu Nasir Islam and other government representative agents, waded into, but could not resolve as the union and the government could not reach consensus.
“However, as you must have heard, the National Judicial Council (NJC), in their quest to resolve the impasse, sent a sub-committee to the state and, among other things, was able to wade into the matter with the view for amicable resolution.
The union stated that following the intervention of the NJC, it was resolved: “That the strike embarked upon on the 11th December, 2018 by Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), Kogi State Branch, be suspended to give room for further deliberation.
“That a committee be set up between the executive and the judiciary to work out the modalities for the payment of salary arrears.
“JUSUN has considered the NJC as the apex body that regulates the conduct and administration of the Judiciary in Nigeria, and therefore has confidence in the Council that the matter has finally been put to rest.
“Also, in consultation with other Sister Associations in the Kogi State Judiciary, that is, the Magistrates’ Association of Nigeria (MAN) and the Association of Inspectors and Area Court Judges (IAJA) are also in agreement with JUSUN.
“Therefore, the strike is hereby suspended with effect from Monday, the April 29,” the union explained.

Boko Haram Attacks Madagali, Adamawa, Kills 26

Twenty-six people have been feared killed and several others critically injured following a Boko Haram attack on a village in Madagali Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

Our correspondent gathered on Tuesday that the insurgents, riding motorcycles, stormed the Kudakaya village in large numbers around 7pm on Monday.

A local vigilante member said, “Many victims fell to the attack. I saw corpses of 26 people and there are several others that were critically injured and taken to hospital.”

A former chairman of the Madagali LGA, Abawu Ularamu, supported the anonymous vigilante member’s account, and added, “They (Boko Haram) burnt several shops and many homes. They also stole food items. As I am talking to you now, we are living in an atmosphere of despair and agony for this attack. Over 20 people were killed while many were injured and rushed to the hospital.”

He said the insurgents must have arrived the community from Sambisa, a forest in neighboring Borno State dreaded for being a hideout for Boko Haram despite its supposedly having been cleared of the insurgents by soldiers.

‘’There is no doubt the attackers came from Sambisa. We experience such periodic attacks from Boko Haram, who usually look for food. They are not far from us. Any slight opportunity, they may strike again,” he said.

The Adamawa State Police Public Relations Officer, Othman Abubakar, confirmed the attack. “Yes, I was briefed that members of the dreaded Boko Haram insurgents have attacked the village.”

Othman, however, could not confirm the casualty figure. He merely said, “I am yet to get the casualty figure but security operatives were deployed and are on the top of the situation.’’

Madagali has since just before the March/April elections been frequently attacked by Boko Haram. It shares the bad luck of being haunted by the insurgents with nearby Michika LGA. Together, they are the two LGAs in Adamawa State that has been attacked by Boko Haram a number of times in the last couple of months.

Breaking: Senate passes 2019 budget, jerks it up by N86 billion

The senate has just passed a sum of N8.916 trillion as the budget for the 2019 fiscal year.

This is against the N8.83 trillion proposed by President Muhammadu Buhari to a joint session of the National Assembly last year.

The new budget figure was passed after Danjuma Goje, chairman senate committee on appropriations, presented a report on the floor of the upper legislative chamber on Tuesday.

The figure is N86 billion higher than what Buhari presented at NASS on December 19.

Rotimi Amaechi accuses Chinese firm of breaching railway contract

Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, who recently led a delegation to China to inspect the pace of work at the CRRC has stated that the Chinese corporation had failed to meet the contract delivery date as agreed.

Nigeria is to take delivery of 10 additional coaches that will be deployed on the Abuja-Kaduna and Lagos-Ibadan rail lines. It was gathered that the coaches were meant to arrive in Nigeria from China by June this year and they are part of the 64 coaches being manufactured for Nigerian rail lines by the Chinese Railway Rolling stock Corporation.

Quote:He was quoted in a statement issued on Monday by the Federal Ministry of Transportation as saying, “We need the coaches by June latest. We need coaches that can carry men from one point to another and we need a minimum of 10 coaches now out of the 64. I requested for 10 coaches now because we need to improve on the Kaduna-Abuja line.
If the 10 (coaches) don’t come, there is nothing I can do but they have to come because they have to manufacture for us to use in Kaduna-Abuja and again Lagos-Ibadan, which will soon be ready. We also have to ensure that we get coaches that we can use pending when they finish the construction of the 64 coaches.”
Amaechi said the pace of work was slow and urged the manufacturers to improve on it, adding that the contract had expired.

He said, “the pace of construction is slow and they need to improve on it. In fact, the contract has expired; we may not have paid all the money but we paid quite a substantial sum and, therefore, they should construct speedily. The contract was signed in December 2017 and was supposed to expire in February 2019. The time has expired and there is a breach of contract but we will look at what the law says because more than one third of the money has been paid.”

The minister, however, pointed out that the issue was not with CRRC but a contract between Nigeria and the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, adding that the matter would be addressed in Nigeria.
Quote:The minister said, “We had a verbal agreement for them to produce 15 per cent of the coaches, locomotives and wagons. They came back and said it was too expensive to establish locomotives and coaches factory and that we can start with the wagon and do 100 per cent assembly in Nigeria for the first five years. After the first five years, they will now build a factory that will manufacture wagons in Nigeria.
“It is not part of the contract we signed in 2017 but I insisted that for me to sign, they must localise it to create more jobs and reduce the expenditure of foreign exchange. Instead of going to buy dollars, you pay the Chinese in their local currency. We have to go further to ask them if we can own it. We have not talked about ownership but what we said was localise it. Although they are using their profit to build it, you can make them hand over the ownership to Nigeria. As for the assembly plant, I intended for Zaria but they chose Kajola in Ogun state.”
Amaechi further directed the Nigerian Railway Corporation to provide land for the wagon factory to CCECC before May 8, 2019.

Well-meaning Nigerians will acknowledge that power supply has improved compared to 2015 - Fashola

The Minister of Power Works and Housing Babatunde Fashola, has said that well-meaning Nigerians can attest to the fact that power supply has improved compared to what it was before the Buhari-led administration came into power in 2015.
Fashola stated this at a media parley in his Abuja office yesterday Monday April 29th.
The Minister said he was very convinced that he has fulfilled his promise of incremental power, better journey experience on the roads, affordable housing, as well as economic opportunities for Nigerians.

Quote:“In the power sector, well-meaning Nigerians acknowledge our efforts by saying clearly that their power supply experience has improved compared to 2015, and we acknowledge that the work has not finished. The task going forward is to solve the outstanding issues of estimated billing, supply of meters, add more power and make the supply steady which I stated will be our medium-term goal'' he said
Speaking further, the Minister said in the area of road construction and housing, his office has done tremendously well.
Quote:“Construction workers will tell you that they now have a better deal, likewise quarry operators. More importantly the road transport operators and their unions and commuters will tell you that their journey times are better. The housing sector has a similar story of economic opportunities with construction going on in 34 states most of which are now largely completed.
But our work is not finished. These are some of the reasons why President Muhammadu Buhari was re-elected. To take the people to the next level and finish the job.” He said the Buhari government has opened a new page in the power sector through his ministry about the possibilities that lie in the off- grid sources. In the works sector, the Ilorin-Jebba road which had collapsed and used to take 3-7 days to traverse 93km is now finished and take a little over one hour to travel.
Maintenance work on bridges, long neglected is being undertaken on assets like 3rd Mainland Bridge, Isaac Boro Bridge, Tamburawa Bridge, Eko Bridge, the old Niger Bridge, while new ones like 2nd Niger Bridge, Bodo-Bonny Bridge, Loko-Oweto Bridge, are being constructed and others have been recently awarded,” he said

Yari projected that the vital oil industry maybe hit by another weaker global prices, which has fallen from highs of about $112 a barrel in 2014 to below $75 at the moment.

Yari, while speaking at the opening ceremony of an induction programme for newly-elected and returning governors in Abuja, said “this scenario is a wake-up call for all of you to come amply prepared to face these kinds of challenges.”

“We are expecting the possibility of another cycle of recession by mid-2020 and which may last up to third quarter of 2021,” he added.

Similar thoughts was also shared by the monetary policy committee of the Central Bank of Nigeria in December 2018.

Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, said the economy had started showing signs of weakness.

According to Emefiele, the slowdown emanated from the oil sector, with strong linkages to employment and growth.

Yari, therefore, advised that governors to “look inward by boosting your revenue generation base” and also use the revenue judiciously.

The Zamfara State governor said the outgoing governors have agreed that borrowing is not a good means of solving economic problems.

He urged the incoming governors to multiply revenue generation base so as to “change the course of doing government business for the betterment of the people”.

Nigeria’s economy exited recession in 2017 after suffering contraction for five consecutive quarters.

Critics say government policies made a bad situation even worse. The decision to delay devaluing Nigeria’s currency meant many businesses struggled to get foreign currency to pay for imports, which had a worse effect on the entire economy.

The slump in global oil prices hit Nigeria hard with the government getting about 70% of its revenues from oil sales.

…Stanbic IBTC records 12% decline in PBT to N23.5bn ….Access Bank reports 64% increase in PBT to N45.1bn ….Fidelity Bank declares 34% increase in PBT Temitope Adebayo Not less than 10 commercial banks operating in the country have reported N250.1 billion Profit Before Tax (PBT) in unaudited first quarter (Q1) results for period ended March 31, 2019, as against N220.65 billion reported in prior first quarter results for the period ended March 31, 2018. When this development is compared with the corresponding period in 2018, it represents an increase of 13.3 per cent.

The Daily Times checks, however, showed that five Tier-1 banks contributed 83.5 per cent of the accumulative N250.1 billion PBT recorded during the period under review. Of the considered banks, Stanbic IBTC Holdings Plc was the only financial institution that reported decline in PBT while Access Bank that recently merged with Diamond Bank reported the most impressive performance in the period under review.

Further checks revealed that Stanbic IBTC holdings reported 12 per cent decline in PBT to N23.5 billion in Q1 2019 as against N26.69 billion reported in Q1 2018. Access Bank Plc reported 64 per cent increase in PBT to N45.1 in Q1 2019 from N27.4billion in Q1 2018 while United Bank for Africa Plc reported N30.2 billion PBT in Q1 2019, 14 per cent increase over N26.6 billion in Q1 2018. But FBN Holdings Plc reported three per cent increase in PBT to N19.3 billion from N18.8 billion in Q1 2018 while Zenith Bank Plc PBT’s added six per cent to N57.29 billion in Q1 2019 from N54 billion reported in Q1 2018.

Fidelity Bank Plc reported 34 per cent increase in PBT to N6.67 billion in Q1 2019 while Union Bank of Nigeria on Monday posted 0.6 per cent increase in PBT to N5.4 billion in Q1 2019 as against N5.41 billion reported in Q1 2018. Commenting on the results, Chief Executive officer, Union Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Emeka Emuwa, in a statement, said: “Our focus in 2019 is to leverage our platform to deliver efficiency and seek to maximise value across all areas of the bank. “In a low yield environment, the Group’s Non-Interest Income growth compensated for the slowdown in interest income stemming from the optimisation of our loan portfolio in 2018.

Consequently, Profit before Tax (PBT) was maintained at N5.4 billion, consistent with Q1 2018. “In line with our priorities, we recorded a material improvement of 819 per cent in loan recoveries with N2.8 billion recovered during the period. Our asset quality continues to improve, with Non-Performing Loans (NPLs) down to 7.8 per cent from 8.7per cent as at December 2018. “We are employing a multi-pronged approach focused on increasing revenue and optimising cost to ensure we deliver enhanced performance in 2019.” Speaking on the Q1 2019 numbers, the Chief Financial Officer, Union Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Joe Mbulu said,

“The Group’s resilience in a challenged environment is demonstrated in these first quarter numbers. While Gross Earnings declined by five per cent to N37.7 billion from N39.5 billion in Q1 2018 due to loan book resolutions from the previous year, our Non-Interest Income grew by 39per cent from N7.8 billion to N10.8 billion driven by recoveries, credit-related fees and dividends from investments. “Operating Expenses increased marginally by four per cent QoQ, reflecting adjustment to staff compensation to strengthen our workforce; and increased depreciation expenses from technology investments to strengthen our treasury and transaction banking platforms in 2018, in line with our desire to lead in the transaction banking space. With the commencement of our Long-term Efficiency Acceleration Programme (LEAP), we expect to record savings on the expense line in 2019.

FSDH Merchant Bank Limited has recorded an increase in its profit after tax as it rose by 29.93 per cent, from N2.84 billion as at 2017, to N3.69 billion as at December 31, 2018.
Speaking at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the bank in Lagos yesterday, the Chairman, FSDH, Femi Agbaje, said the bank also realised profit before tax of N5.57 billion for the financial year ended December 31, 2018, adding that the figure represented an increase of 43.93 per cent over the N3.87 billion recorded as at December 31, 2017.

Speaking to shareholders, he said: “Your bank embarked on digitalisation initiatives embedded in its strategy. These initiatives are aimed to bring about innovation and operational efficiency. The initiatives involve development of comprehensive web and mobile payment platforms that increase payments, remittance, transfers, collections and other corporate and individual account activities options to our clients.
“It also includes deployment of an enterprise data governance that will support the availability of data across the bank to improve the quality/timeliness of business decisions. It will also enhance regulatory and compliance reporting and enhances the confidentiality, integrity and availability of quality information to our clients.
“The bank attained two new international operational standards certifications during the year. These certifications further demonstrate the bank’s commitment to disaster recovery maturity and quality service delivery to our customers.”
He added: “The Nigerian equity market depreciated year on year in 2018. The Nigerian Stock Exchange All Share Index (NSE ASI) depreciated by 17.81 per cent to close at 31,430.50 points. The bearish trend in the market was mainly as a result of continued pullback of foreign investors due to political considerations and rising global yields. Domestic investors also adopted a cautious approach to the equity market because of weak economic performance and attractive yield in the fixed income securities.”

Kachikwu: Nigeria Constrained to Fund $2.5bn Refineries’ Repair
April 30, 201

[Image: 55e77164-ibe-kachikwu-696x522.jpg]Ibe Kachikwu

Chineme Okafor in Abuja
The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, has disclosed that it will be difficult for Nigeria to dip its hands into its coffers to finance the repair of its decrepit refineries in Warri, Port Harcourt and Kaduna.
Kachikwu, said this recently in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, where he confirmed it would take about $2.5 billion to fix the refineries and get them to work at 90 per cent production capabilities.
He was hosted by the Minister of Energy Industry and Mineral Resources of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Khalid Al Falih, at the meeting, and explained there were options available to Nigeria to fix the refineries even though the country needs to immediately make the decision of going with one.

For a while now, the country has dithered on deciding on what ways to adopt to fix her refineries and end importation of petrol.
In its early days, the President Muhammadu Buhari led administration had said it would end importation of petrol by the end of 2019, when it hoped to have fixed the refineries and the 600,000 barrels a day processing refinery being built by Dangote Group comes on board. These, have however not happened.
But in his remarks in Riyadh, Kachikwu said: “I can’t make a final decision alone in terms of what options to be chosen. In terms of what options on the table for the refineries, NNPC negotiated with the investors for like one and half year after the president approved. Unfortunately, they couldn’t reach conclusion for whatever reason, we are obviously going to revisit the discussion. I think that’s the fastest way to go.
“The second option is that, we decided that we are going to dip our hands into our own internal funds, which we don’t have a lot of and make the money available.
“What is required is about $2.5 billion to re-kit the entire refinery and the reason why I don’t want to go that way is the fact that the country is constrained,” he added.
According to him, Nigeria’s third option was to approach countries that could set up petrol refining partnership with it.
While insisting that Nigeria was still a key oil and gas business destination due to its existing hydrocarbon resources as well as location amongst others, Kachikwu said getting the four refineries up and running was necessary without further delay.
“We are targeting those countries who want to put in investment either on a 100 per cent basis or collaboration with oil companies that have worked with them,” he explained.
According to him, his visit to Saudi Arabia was necessary to cement ties between both countries.
He noted that his visit yielded positive results, which may lead to massive investment from Saudi Arabia, including an independent refinery.
“We want to leverage on the huge success of Saudi government in terms of petroleum. Last year alone. Saudi Aramco, an equivalent of NNPC made about $200 billion as profits last year,” he explained.

NSIA grows $1.5bn sovereign wealth fund by $350m
Published April 30, 2019

Ifeanyi Onuba, Abuja
The Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority, which is the agency managing the Sovereign Wealth Fund, said it had grown the seed capital of $1.5bn given to it by the Federal Government by about $350m.
The fund set up in 2013 with about $1.5bn has three pots from which investments could be anchored.

The pots are the Future Generation Fund, Infrastructure Fund, and Fiscal Stabilisation Fund.
Speaking on the 2018 financial performance of the fund, the Managing Director, Mr Uche Orji, explained that the management of the NSIA had committed significant capital across all the three ring-fenced funds.
He said despite concerns over international trade flows, slow growth in key economic indicators and increased volatility across financial markets, the Authority’s investment strategy proved robust with headline numbers maintaining a favourable trajectory across the three funds.
For instance, he said total comprehensive income including the impact of foreign exchange gains rose from N27.93bn in 2017 to N44.34bn in 2018.
Similarly, the NSIA boss explained that total assets recorded a growth of 16 per cent to N617.70bn in 2018 as against the 2017 figure of N533.88bn.
He put the rate of return on the core funds at 7.2 per cent for the stabilisation fund, 8.3 per cent for the future generation fund and 7.7 per cent for the infrastructure fund
The NSIA boss said going forward; the agency would increase its focus on domestic infrastructure projects specifically in agriculture, healthcare, and roads, among others.
He said already, the NSIA had reached financial closure on three healthcare projects including a Cancer Centre at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital and Advanced Diagnostic Centres at Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia and Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital.

He said while the cancer centre at LUTH had been inaugurated, that of the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia and Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital would be completed before the end of June.
In the area of agriculture, he said under the Presidential Fertiliser Initiative, the NSIA had increased output with approximately 12 million bags of fertiliser produced with a total of 18 blending plants participating in the programme.
In the area of infrastructure, he said through the $650m Presidential Infrastructure Development Fund, the NSIA had commenced capital deployment across three of the major road projects under the fund.

The projects are Second Niger Bridge, Lagos – Ibadan Expressway and Abuja-Zaria-Kaduna-Kano Road.
On projects to be implemented in the 2019 fiscal period, Orji said that the NSIA would intensify the process of choosing a strategic partner for its investment in Nigeria’s Commodities Exchange.
On the economic outlook for the rest of the year, he said, “There are no apparent expectations of recession risks in 2019.
“However, the Authority continues to monitor the market conditions with the view to leverage the upside risks that avail themselves in the market. We expect that our strategy will continue to deliver positive returns.

“The deployment of the Presidential Infrastructure Development Fund will play a key part of our infrastructure investment strategy for the year.
“Healthcare remains a focus area going forward with the implementation of the next phase of diagnostic and treatment centres.
“The board has also approved Gas industrialisation as an area of focus.
Increased focus and capital deployment in Infrastructure is likely to affect future returns.”

'I'll die if I don’t have sex in a day' – Prophet Osei Kumchacha

The founder and leader of the Heaven’s Gate Ministry, Prophet Nicholas Osei popularly known as Prophet Kumchacha has admitted he is a sex addict and can hardly live without indulging in the act even for a day.

He believes it will amount to death if he decides to make such a resolution adding that he is a dreaded sex addict with several skills in bed which are known to his wife.

Quote:“I have 35 styles, so you can’t be my wife and be saying you’re tired of having sex; no matter how tired you are, you must avail yourself to me anytime I want it”, he revealed.
According him, the sole duty of a wife is to satisfy the husband in bed and any woman who does the contrary is bound for hell fire.
Quote:“But for sex, wives wouldn’t be necessary, because apart from sex, there’s nothing that I can’t do for myself or get my mother, sister or aunt to do for me”. He justified.
He also indicated that God created women only to cook for men because men are not so good at cooking, which is the reason God gave that quality to women. Although he could not prove where in the bible God made women cook, he insisted that cooking is the calling of women.

INEC replacing servers to conceal rigging - PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party has alleged that the Independent National Electoral Commission is replacing all the servers in its national headquarters in Abuja and offices in all the states of the federation.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, made the allegations in a statement made available to journalists in Abuja. He said the commission’s action was aimed at deleting the actual presidential election results transmitted from the polling centres across the country.

He said the action further exposed the culpability of INEC in the manipulation of the 2019 presidential election.

Quote:“The PDP has been well briefed on how the INEC leadership and officials of the Buhari Presidency became jittery and resorted to the desperate measure, after they realised that the servers have information of Atiku Abubakar’s victory at the election.
“Our party also has details of how the INEC leadership and the Presidency agents procured and detailed computer experts to the commission’s offices to switch the servers, mutilate vital information in the system and attempt to erase all trails of transmitted results to the main server.
“Moreover, our party has been informed about how the INEC leadership, several weeks after the election, used some compromised officials of the commission to manipulate voter registers in some states by ticking names of individuals who did not participate in the presidential election, as having voted. This was with the view to using such to cover the fictitious results it wrote for the APC.”
The PDP spokesman said what INEC and the Buhari Presidency did not understand was that computer software and applications left traces, signatures as well as footmark. He said a forensic investigation of the system would reveal the real votes transmitted from the polling centres, which he claimed, showed the PDP’s presidential candidate as the winner of the election.

But INEC’s Director of Publicity and Voter Education, Oluwole Osaze-Uzzi, has denied the allegations. Osaze-Uzzi said since the matter was in court, the PDP knew what to do if it felt its claims were true.  “We deny the allegations. Since the matter is in court, we will not talk more about it.  “They know what to do if they feel their allegations are correct,” he said.

Boko Haram members earn $3,000 daily but Nigerian soldiers get N1,000 - FG official, Sidi Ali Mohammed says

A member of the Presidential Committee on the North East Initiative (PCNI), Dr. Sidi Ali Mohammed, has disclosed that Boko Haram members receive as much as $3,000 daily which he claims serves as payment for carrying out terrorist attacks in the North-East since 2014.
Mohammed made this disclosure at the Presentation of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Sub-Sahara Africa’s Economic Outlook Report, in Abuja on Monday April 29th.
According to Mohammed, the payment makes the N1,000 daily allowance paid to Nigerian troops at the war front ridiculous.

Quote:“I will give you an example. The Nigerian military for example, gets N1, 000 per day for being in the North East, at the war front, as an allowance. The same North-East, where if you are a member of Boko Haram you get $3,000 per day as allowance. So it is lucrative. Sometimes, they even give you money upfront. So we must do something about the youth from where they are recruiting.” he said

Hundreds of motorists unaccounted for as kidnappers block Kaduna-Abuja highway again

On Monday afternoon, kidnappers blocked the Kaduna-Abuja Expressway, forcing several motorists to abandon their vehicles and head for nearby bushes to avoid being abducted.

The development has left many motorists and passengers unaccounted for, just as their belongings were stolen by the kidnappers. A journalist who narrowly escaped the attack reports that the incident happened a few kilometres to Katari village in Kagarko Local Government Area of Kaduna State at about 3.30pm.

Hundreds of motorists traveling from Kaduna to Abuja, as well as those going the other way, found themselves stranded for more than 40 minutes as both lanes of the expressway were blocked by cars hastily abandoned by their owners.

The bandits however left the scene of the incident and moved into the bush with some of their victims before the arrival of some security men, who later cleared the road for the motorists to continue on their journeys.

Commenting on the incident, owner of the popular Shagalinku Restaurant in Abuja, Umar Shagalinku, lauded the prompt intervention of the security personnel. He, however, called on relevant security authorities to use modern technology, including helicopters, to track kidnappers.

Quote:“I have been hearing about this robbery and kidnapping along Kaduna–Abuja road, but today, I witnessed it. This is terrible and ungodly. I sincerely pray that authorities concerned will do something about these criminals so that motorists will feel safe while plying this important road,” he said.
