The Minister of Power, Sale Mamman, on Monday, in Abuja inaugurated two committees to ensure the steady completion of the N2 trillion Mambilla Hydroelectric Power Project in Taraba State
President Muhammadu Buhari had last month approved the constitution of an Inter-ministerial Steering Committee (IMSC) and Project Delivery Committee (PDC) for the project
The Federal Government had earlier said funds were already released for compensation for land and other property that may be affected by the construction of the 3,050 megawatts power plant.
Speaking during the inauguration, Mamman said the effective collaboration has been reached with the Taraba state government on the project.
He disclosed that commencement of sensitization has equally started with host communities in the seven local governments covering the project, adding that land surveyors have also been engaged to demarcate the project areas and commence enumeration.
“We have signed Memorandum of Understanding with the Taraba State Government for implementation of the project,” Mamman said.
While the Inter-Ministerial Steering Committee is chaired by Mamman, the project delivery committee would be headed by Overseeing Director in charge of Renewable Energy in the Ministry of Power, Faruk Yabo.
Regarded as one of Africa’s biggest dam projects expected to be connected to three dams across the Donga River in Taraba State, the project, which was conceived in 1982, has remained fallow despite the poor state of electricity supply in Nigeria.
The main Mambilla Dam is reportedly a large roller-compacted concrete dam and reservoir at 1,300 metres (4,300 ft) above sea level. Others are representatives of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), National Security Adviser (NSA), Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA), and the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS).
