The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) generated over N48.5 billion in 2017.
The revenue is made up of N38.5 billion local revenue and about $30 million foreign collection in the year under review.
This was as the Service further noted that at least 40 of its personnel had been suspended over allegations of misconduct.
The Comptroller-General of Immigration (CGI), Mr. Muhammad Babandede, made the disclosures yesterday at an operational review meeting with zonal coordinators and comptrollers of commands, in Abuja.
The CGI said the meeting provided a veritable platform for a review of past operations, and enhanced service delivery projection for the future.
According to Babandede, the N38.5 billion revenue was generated between January and December 2017.
He gave the breakdown of the local revenue as follows: passport revenue (N14, 397,911,469. 00); ECOWAS/AA (N72,167,440); Address Verification fee (N1,941,867,172. 00); Non-refundable administration fees (186,069,700); CERPAC (N20,316,989,000); e-PASS (N1,617,146,137. 96).
On foreign revenue collection, the Immigration chief said $28, 850, 654 accrued from Passports (into the FGN/JP Morgan Account), while revenue from Carrier Liability/Visa on Arrival was put at $1,087,950.
He maintained that the figures were disclosed “as part of the objectives of the Federal Government towards the promotion of accountability and transparency in public accounts.”
Meanwhile, the NIS has suspended 40 of its personnel for alleged touting and other acts of misconduct.
The CGI, who acknowledged the fact that a few compromised officers were in the system, however, vowed to identify and punish such errant personnel.
“There will always be bad (people) in the system. We have arrested and suspended them; like officers, who had been caught soliciting for money.
“Almost 40 officers have been suspended and some have been dismissed,” Babandede said.
In a related development, the Service disclosed it has retrieved a total of 299 voters’ cards from aliens in 2017.
This, Babandede explained, followed their resolve to ensure foreign nationals did not participate in the country’s voting processes.
He said: “It is our responsibility in 2019 to ensure that no non-Nigerian is allowed to contest, participate, or vote (in the elections).
“In 2017 alone, we retrieved 299 voters’ cards from non-Nigerians.”
