Bournemouth and Nigerian-born footballer, Arnaut Danjuma reveals he was mistakenly arrested on suspicion of attempted murder







Nigerian-born footballer, Arnaut Danjuma Groeneveld, who plays as a winger for Bournemouth, has revealed he was mistakenly arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in the UK just days before the Coronavirus lockdown.
 
The 23-year-old who was born in Lagos, Nigeria to a Dutch father and Nigerian mother recalls how he was walking through Bournemouth town centre in order to get some food when police apprehended him.
 
Speaking with The Sun, the Netherlands international said: 'Suddenly there was a police car there and two police officers came out of it. One said, "Put your hands on the fence!"
 
'I asked, "What did I do?" They said, "Put your hands on the fence, shut up!"
 

 
'So I put my hands on the fence and asked again, "What did I do?" They said to wait for the other officers to arrive.'
 
According to him, the police were looking for a suspect in a stabbing incident on March 16, and mistakenly arrested him.
 
'They came and I asked again. It was embarrassing. People were taking pictures and it got me frustrated so I went mad on the cop.
 
'I told him things I shouldn't have said. But I got frustrated and angry and in the end, he said, "You're not the one we're looking for, you can go".'
 
The Sun reports that police did not apologise to Danjuma for detaining him for the wrong reason.
 
The club reportedly asked him if he wanted to make a formal complaint about the incident, but he refused and said he would prefer to keep focusing on his return from injury. 
 
Danjuma also revealed that he's been racially abused in the past, while noting that his recent encounter with police wasn't the first time. 
 
'I've been through racism a lot and have developed a skin against it,' said Danjuma.
 
'There are loads of things that happen regularly to me. The police will stop me every now and then just because I drive a huge car.
 
'Then they will just say it's a check-up, but you know it's not a check-up.'
 
The Dutchman is proud of the anti-racism protests going on right now following the killings of black people in the hands of Police. 
 
He also says people need more education on history, and that 'if you don't teach [children] values, they will always take a wrong turn.' 
 
The Bournemouth winger who signed for the club for £13.7million in 2019 from Club Bruges, has played nine games for the Cherries so far this season.

Arsene Wenger rules himself out of running to become Arsenal chairman







Former Arsenal coach, Arsene Wenger has distanced himself from rumours that he could return to Arsenal to take up the vacant role as club chairman.
 
The retirement of Sir Chips Keswick at the end of May after 15 years as Chairman means the club is without a chairman heading into the resumption of the 2019/20 season next week.
 
Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown, who spent eight years playing for Wenger,  urged the club to appoint Wenger as chairman saying the Frenchman's return to the club at boardroom level would be 'special'.
 

 
Keown told talkSPORT: 'It would be something special to see Arsene Wenger come onto the board. 
'I don't think so somehow, I think he's said recently he doesn't want to do that, never saw himself as someone who would sit on the board, but they could do a lot worse.   
'I feel that would be almost the perfect answer for [Stan] Kroenke, the young Josh Kroenke, he needs that older person perhaps around, someone with the experience.
'Other people would think that it would be intimidating for [Mikel] Arteta - I don't think so. 
'If you're a successful-type personality, you don't really mind who else is in the building. You embrace that knowledge that could come in through the door.
 
Now Wenger, at 70, has dismissed the rumor. In a one sentence reply, Wenger told beINSports: 'The candidate says there is no candidate.' 

Wenger's last game as Arsenal manager came in May 2018, after 22 years at the club winning seven FA Cups and three Premier League titles.

EPL: Tottenham release statement on calling off Man Utd clash

Tottenham Hotspur have released a statement insisting that preparations for Friday’s Premier League clash against Manchester United will continue, despite their meeting with a Norwich City player who has tested positive for COVID-19.

Spurs lost 2-1 to the Canaries in a behind-closed-doors friendly match at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

However a player from the visiting team, was confirmed as one of two to test positive for Coronavirus, when the latest batch of testing results were released on Saturday.

With the player now set to isolate for seven days, it has led some to speculation that Spurs players would also have to isolate under the track and trace guidelines.

However Spurs say that isn’t the case, as their squad weren’t in close contact with the Norwich player.

“Close contacts have been defined by the government as being within two metres of a confirmed case for 15 minutes or more,” Tottenham said in a statement.

“The Norwich player in question confirmed he had no ‘close contacts’ with our team and our squad also verified this.

“Our testing has continued to return only negative results for Covid-19 since one positive reading was confirming almost two weeks ago.”

Nigerian striker, Awoniyi hospitalized

Mainz striker, Taiwo Awoniyi, has been hospitalized after he suffered a concussion during his side’s Bundesliga clash against Augsburg on Sunday.
The Nigerian attacker was motionless for some seconds after he landed badly following a collision with Augsburg player, Felix Uduokhai, in the first half of the encounter.

Providing an update on Awoniyi, Mainz disclosed that the 22-year-old would spend the night in the hospital as a precautionary measure.

“Our striker Taiwo Awoniyi suffered a concussion in his collision with Augsburg’s Felix Uduokhai and is spending the night in the hospital as a precautionary measure,” Mainz wrote on Twitter.
“Get well soon, Taiwo!”

Awoniyi is currently on loan at Mainz from Liverpool.

LaLiga: Real Madrid see off Eibar, close gap on Barcelona

Real Madrid returned to LaLiga action for the first time since March this year, with a 3-1 win over Eibar on Sunday night.


Zinedine Zidane’s men flew out of the blocks at the Alfred Di Stefano, to all but win the game in the opening half.

Toni Kroos, Sergio Ramos and Marcelo scored to give Madrid a 3-0 lead at the interval.


The visitors pulled one back through Pedro Bigas, but it was a rather comfortable victory for Los Blancos.
The win takes them within two points of rivals Barcelona, who crushed Mallorca 4-0 yesterday.


Barca host Leganes next, while Real Madrid clashes with Valencia.

Taiwo Awoniyi Suffers Concussion, Rushed To Hospital 

Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi will be spending the night in the hospital after suffering a concussion in one of Sunday’s Bundesliga matches.

Awoniyi who is on loan from Liverpool at Mainz was stretchered off in his side’s clash against Augsburg after suffering the serious injury.

The former Nigeria youth international landed awkwardly and, after a delay, was carried off on a stretcher with his neck in a brace.

He was left hurt after a clash of heads with Augsburg defender Felix Uduokhai who is also courted to play for the Super Eagles.

Mainz on their official twitter handle confirmed that Awoniyi will be spending the night at the hospital but the club said it was only a precautionary move.

The club wrote: “Our striker Taiwo #Awoniyi suffered a concussion in his collision with @FCA_World ‘s Felix #Uduokhai and is spending the night in hospital as a precautionary measure.

This development may be a setback for Awoniyi who lately has been making inroads at Mainz with Sunday’s outing his fourth successive start for the club.

The 22-year-old has only found the back of the net once against Köln for the Opel Arena outfit in this campaign.

Mainz are currently three places above the relegation zone after winning nine games, drawing four and losing 18 which saw them gather 31 points from 31 games.

The club will be keen to have their best legs for their remaining games of the season to make sure they escape relegation.

Unfortunately, Mainz after losing one of their strikers in Awoniyi also lost Sunday’s game to Augsburg by a lone goal.

Mainz will be away to Borussia Dortmund in the next round of league games on Wednesday.

French club Nantes reward Nigeria's Moses Simon with 4-year deal after winning player of the season while on loan







French club, Nantes, have completed the permanent signing of Super Eagles star Moses Simon on a four-year deal from Levante after he was named last month as the Canary player of the Season for the 2019-20 campaign.
 
Simon joined the Canaries on a temporary deal from Levante last summer after struggling to make an impact with Levante in La Liga last season.

Before the season concluded early due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Simon, 24, contributed nine goals and eight assists in 30 appearances for Nantes helping them finish 13th in the Ligue 1 standings. His loan contract has now been made permanent with a new contract that runs till 2024 .
 
Simon says he's happy at Nantes compared to when he was at Levante and had problems learning Spanish.
 

 
"At Levante, I did not play very well due to some circumstances with the coach. In Spain, the coach only spoke Spanish and I needed a translator," Simon said.

"It was easier to play in France because I understand the language more and communication is very good with the coach.
"I am enjoying my football now. The most important thing is to play. Not to sit on the bench. To have the freedom to play, have the freedom to speak and to do what you know how to do best."

Thank God who protected me'- Liverpool striker Taiwo Awoniyi says after regaining consciousness following nasty head injury







Liverpool and Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi has released a statement following the head injury he sustained during his club's league match on Sunday.

Awoniyi, on loan at German club Mainz, was stretchered off in the 23rd minute in his club’s 1-0 defeat to Augsburg at Opel Arena after he hit the head of Felix Uduokhai and then landed awkwardly.
 
He became unconscious and was taken to the hospital where he was diagnosed with a severe concussion.
 

 
Club manager Achim Beierlorzer on Monday revealed the striker had regained consciousness and on Tuesday Awoniyi released a statement thanking God, his club and Mainz University Medical Center for saving his life.
 

 
"The last thing I can remember from this scene is how I hit the ball with my head, and then I passed out,” Awoniyi told the club website on Tuesday.

“It was difficult for me on the field to regain consciousness and really awake and it also took a little while before I could remember everything. But I feel much better now.

“I would like to praise our medical department at Mainz 05 and Mainz University Medical Center. They looked after me very well.

“And I thank the dear God who protected me in this situation and made everything possible for me anyway.”

Europa League: UEFA confirms dates for Man Utd, Inter Milan, Sevilla fixtures

UEFA has confirmed that the remaining Europa League games, will be played out as an eight-team tournament in Germany.


Manchester United, Inter Milan, Sevilla and others will begin their quest for glory in the competition in August.

United, Wolves and Rangers all played the first leg of their last-16 ties before the COVID-19 break.
And on Wednesday UEFA confirmed their schedule to finish this year’s European competitions.


The eight remaining last-16 second-leg matches including United vs LASK and Wolves vs Olympiakos will be played on August 5 and 6.

The matches, Inter Milan vs Getafe and Sevilla vs Roma matches, whose first leg was also postponed, will be played as a single leg at a venue to be confirmed.

The eight teams remaining in the competition will then take part in a straight knockout tournament between August 10 and 21.

Champions League: UEFA confirms venues for knockout stages, final

UEFA on Wednesday confirmed that Lisbon will host the final of this year’s Champions League.
This decision was reached at a meeting of UEFA’s executive committee.

The final stages of the 2019/2020 will also be played in the Portugal capital instead of Istanbul, which was the initial choice.

The Champions League will be completed as a mini-competition from the quarter-final onward, with Benfica’s Estadio da Luz and Sporting’s Estadio Jose Alvalade to host the games.
The mini-tournament will run from August 12-23, with the round-of-16 matches completed August 7-8.

“I am delighted that we are able to resume almost all of our competitions.

“I am confident that we will not have to endure the fans’ absence for long and that they will be allowed into stadiums sooner rather than later,” UEFA President, Aleksander Ceferin, told the official website.

Man City vs Arsenal: Arteta fires Champions League warning to players

Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta, has warned his squad that he will not accept a failure to qualify for any European competition this season.


The Gunners have not qualified for the Champions League in the last three years.

They travel to Manchester City on Wednesday, sitting outside the European qualification places on the table.
If Arsenal were to miss out altogether, it would be the first time since the 1995/1996 season they are not involved in any continental competition.


“We haven’t been able to achieve the goals we have wanted in the last three years and there is a reason behind it.

“If we stand still that gap will become bigger and bigger. I haven’t come here to accept that.


“The fact that we’ve not been in the Champions League has put an enormous amount of pressure on the club in financial terms.

Barcelona vs Leganes: Setien explains why he substituted Ansu Fati early, rates Griezmann’s performance

Barcelona manager, Quique Setien, has explained why he took forward, Ansu Fati, off early in the second half during his side’s La Liga 2-0 win over Leganes on Tuesday night.


He also hailed forward Antoine Griezmann’s performance against Leganes.

Barcelona defeated Leganes at the Camp Nou, thanks to two goals from Ansu Fati and Lionel Messi.
“We opted for Ansu today because he has overcome some injury problems and has looked good in several training sessions now,” Setien was quoted by Sport as saying after the game.


“He did a good job, both in attack and defence. I did not want to put him at risk anymore after the recent problems. He already had some pain at half time, and we wanted to take care of him.”


Speaking on Griezmann’s performance, Setien added: “Griezmann is a boy who does a commendable job.
“He is an extremely important player.”

Barcelona’s next La Liga fixture is against Sevilla on Friday.

'I lived in a bubble, now I clean sh*t off the car' – Ex-Liverpool star Jose Enrique advises footballers to plan their retirement







Former Liverpool and Newcastle star Jose Enrique has advised players to think and plan about their lives after retirement, as very few football stars are mentally prepared for the transition.

 
34 year old Jose Enrique, spent nine years in England, playing for Newcastle and Liverpool.
 

Enrique who is now a football agent after battling a brain tumour and various knee injuries that made him retire at an early age, says settling into his new lifestyle was not easy.
 
He then advised players to plan their post-retirement well, warning that the “bubble” of being well paid and adored by fans will eventually burst.
 

 
“When people think of footballers, they think of Liverpool, Barcelona, Juventus players,” Enrique told Tribuna. 


“But there are players in League One, League Two, they’re footballers too, even though they don’t live the life a Liverpool player lives. 


“I'm talking about players from the big leagues. I lived in a bubble. You do what you love, get paid well, receive so much attention, everyone treats you so good wherever you go. And then, all of a sudden, it stops.


“Now my partner tells me, ‘Jose, go and clean the sh*t off the car’. And I go and clean it. I used to do it anyway but as a footballer, you have your cleaners, it’s a completely different life. When it all stops, the bubble just bursts. 


“I talked to Jorge Lopez, a former Valencia player, two days ago. He told me the same thing. You’re still young when you retire. So you say, ‘Well, what do I do now?’ That’s why I tell all the players, ‘Prepare yourself for the post-football life’. I didn’t.”
 
Enrique believes that people need a purpose in order to carry on living a meaningful life.
“Someone told me recently, ‘If I was a former footballer, I would just live the holiday life’,” he added. 


“Listen, after the first month, you’re already bored of it. Alright, give it a year, no problem. But after that? I’m still 34. When I retired, I was 31-32. 


"What do I want? Do I want to be on holiday for the rest of my life? No, I don’t. You want to be something as a human being. You want to work, you want to do something that makes you feel proud of yourself. I feel proud being an agent. 


“Humans need to work, you can’t be on holidays all the time. It’s very important to have a plan before you retire.”

Man City's Eric Garcia rushed to hospital after heavy collision with Ederson in 3-0 win over Arsenal (photos/video)







Manchester City player, Eric Garcia was on Wednesday night rushed to the hospital following a heavy head collision with club goalkeeper, Ederson, in City's 3-0 win over Arsenal in the English Premier league.
 

 
Garcia was sent hard to the ground by Ederson as the goalkeeper came out of his penalty area to clear the ball in the 80th minute of the game at Etihad Stadium. Garcia was carried off on a stretcher after nearly 10 minutes of treatment by medical staff.


City players appeared concerned, with left back Benjamin Mendy putting his jersey over his face and unable to look.
 

 
Man City Head coach, Pep Guardiola in the post game conference confirmed that Garcia was conscious but further tests will be carried out.


''We are a little bit concerned about Eric. He's conscious, which is a good sign but he's going to make an extra test in hospital.'' Guardiola Said.

EPL: Arteta reveals why he dropped Ozil for Arsenal’s 3-0 defeat at Man City

Arsenal boss, Mikel Arteta, has claimed he left Mesut Ozil of the squad that travelled to Manchester City “for tactical reasons”.


Ozil was left in London, as the Gunners lost 3-0 at The Etihad.

Before Wednesday’s game, he had played in all of Arsenal’s matches since Arteta arrived in December.
The German playmaker also featured in friendlies against Championship sides Charlton and Brentford last week.


However, Ozil was not included the 22-man squad which Arteta selected for the trip to Manchester.

When asked why Ozil wasn’t selected, Arteta told Sky Sports: “It was a tactical reason.”


In a subsequent interview, he added: “I’m going to select the players for the day that we believe as staff that are the best for the day and that’s it.”

David Luiz: Our Defeat To Manchester City


Arsenal defender David Luiz accepted responsibility for their 3-0 defeat at Manchester City, but said he still hopes to play for the club again.

Luiz, who is out of contract at the end of the month, was sent off to cap an error-strewn return to action.

"It's my fault," the 33-year-old said. "The team did well, especially with 10 men. The coach is amazing, all the players are amazing, it was my fault.

"I want to be here. The coach knows. He wants me to stay."

Luiz only joined Arsenal last summer - moving from Chelsea on deadline day for £8m - but he was left on the bench against City amid confusion surrounding his contract status.

He came on in the 24th minute after Pablo Mari was injured, and was at fault for Raheem Sterling's opener.

He then hauled down Riyad Mahrez to give away a penalty and was sent off. The suspension will mean he has played his final game for Arsenal unless he extends his deal.

"I should have taken a different decision in the last two months but I didn't," he told Sky Sports.

"All about my contract, if I stay here or not. I have 14 days to be here and that's it. I should have tried to decide my future as early as possible, but I didn't.

"I don't want to use that as an alibi or excuse, it's my fault - that's it. I love to be here. That's why I continue to train hard."

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta would not criticise the defender, and said his display would have no bearing on a decision to exercise the option on his contract.

"He has spoken in the dressing room," Arteta said. "David is someone who is very honest.

"My opinion has not changed from the moment I joined the team and it won't change because of a difficult performance tonight."

Napoli held their nerve to claim a first major trophy in six seasons by beating Juventus 4-2 in a penalty shootout in the Coppa Italia final.[/b]

Arkadiusz Milik scored the winning spot-kick after Paulo Dybala had seen his first for Juve saved, before team-mate Danilo blazed the second over.

This followed a hard-fought 0-0 over 90 minutes of few chances, played behind closed doors at the Stadio Olimpico.

It gives Napoli boss Gennaro Gattuso his first major trophy as a manager.

However, for his opposite number Maurizio Sarri it is another lost piece of potential silverware.

So far in his career - which included a transformational three-year spell at Napoli that saw them regularly challenge for the title - Sarri has just last season's Europa League to his name, from his one campaign with Chelsea.

And while his side currently top Serie A, they are far from assured of securing a ninth straight title and his first trophy on home soil, with their lead over second-placed Lazio just one point.

Napoli edge hard-fought contest
With the Coppa Italia semi-final second legs and final serving as a precursor to the return of the Italian top-flight, it was clear over 90 minutes that neither side is yet fully up to speed.

There was little to truly get excited about, although Napoli's Lorenzo Insigne did strike the post with a superb free-kick before Juve's legendary 42-year-old goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon was forced into a smart save to deny Diego Demme from close range.

Arguably the best moment of normal time came with just seconds remaining, as Buffon was forced into another decent save to parry a Nikola Maksimovic header from a corner before Eljif Elmas somehow conspired to fire his follow-up against the post.

That took us to the shootout, which Juve handed to Napoli courtesy of two initial failures.

The first spot-kick from Dybala was at a perfect height for Alex Meret to push away, while the second was woefully dispatched over the bar by Danilo.

With Insigne, Matteo Politano and Maksimovic all scoring, it left Milik to seal the success, which he did with a coolly-taken effort into the bottom corner.

Gattuso's time to shine
The Italian won the World Cup, Champions League and Serie A as a midfielder, but his transition to coaching has been largely underwhelming.

The closest he had previously come to silverware was in this competition in 2017 when he led AC Milan to the final but was on the receiving end of a 4-0 loss to Juve.

He replaced Carlo Ancelotti at Napoli in December with the squad in freefall and players at loggerheads with club management after refusing to take part in a week-long training camp.

But results in the league picked up in January and he has now guided the club to their first trophy since winning the Coppa Italia in 2014, setting up a potentially brighter future both for them and himself.

In keeping with this, they were also boosted earlier on Wednesday when all-time top scorer Dries Mertens signed a new contract until 2022.

They are way off the pace in Serie A - 24 points behind Juve in sixth place - but having come so close to a trophy in the last few seasons they will see this interrupted campaign as a success.

Coppa Italia: What Sarri said about Ronaldo after Juventus lose in final

Juventus boss, Maurizio Sarri, has said Cristiano Ronaldo is lacking sharpness, following their defeat to Napoli in the Coppa Italia final on Wednesday night.
The match ended 0-0 in regulation time and had to be decided on penalties.

Paulo Dybala and Danilo missed for the Serie A champions, as Napoli ran out 4-2 winners.

For Ronaldo, it is the first time he has suffered consecutive defeats in finals during his club career.
“He’s in the same shape as the others, like Paulo Dybala and Douglas Costa, he is lacking the sharpness to do what works best for him,’ Sarri told RAI about Ronaldo.

“I didn’t say much to the players after the game. I was angry and disappointed just like them, so at these moments it’s best to stay silent.”

Chelsea complete signing of RB Leipzig striker, Timo Werner








Chelsea have completed the signing of RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner. 
 
The Germany international, 24, has agreed on a five-year deal with the club and becomes Chelsea's second signing of the summer after winger Hakim Ziyech from Ajax. 
 
The Premier League club agreed to pay €50m (£45m) to trigger the release clause of Werner, who will earn more than €10m (£9m) per season at Chelsea. 
 
Speaking on his move to Chelsea, Werner said: ‘I am delighted to be signing for Chelsea, it is a very proud moment for me to be joining this great club. I of course want to thank RB Leipzig, the club and the fans, for four fantastic years. You will forever be in my heart. I look forward to next season with my new team-mates, my new manager and of course the Chelsea fans. Together we have a very successful future ahead of us.’
 
Chelsea director, Marina Granovskaia added: 'We are very excited that Timo Werner has chosen to join Chelsea. He is a player who was coveted all over Europe and it is no surprise, he has that rare mix of being young and exciting and yet established and proven. Timo Werner will see out the remainder of the Bundesliga season with RB Leipzig before joining up with his new team-mates in July.

This is the first time in Cristiano Ronaldo’s career that he has lost two consecutive Cup Finals at club level, as Juventus failed at both the Supercoppa and the Coppa Italia.

The Bianconeri were beaten 3-1 by Lazio in December in Riyadh, with Paulo Dybala’s goal wiped out by Luis Alberto, Senad Lulic and Danilo Cataldi.

Juve lost the Coppa Italia Final this evening against Napoli, as after a 0-0 draw at the Stadio Olimpico, the Partenopei emerged 4-2 winners in a penalty shoot-out.
