Increasing the number of substitutions and players on the bench when the Premier League restarts this month is a brilliant idea, according to Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The former Manchester United forward said the decision would allow managers to rotate their squads during a congested schedule.

The league, suspended since mid-March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will resume on June 17 after agreeing temporary rule changes to increase substitutes from three to five per game.

The number of players allowed on the bench has been put up from seven to nine.

“We’ve had time out. So, I don’t think we can expect that those lads who’ve missed lots of the football can last the full game. But now the rules have changed, we can use five subs and have nine on the bench,” Solskjaer told Manchester United’s website.

“I think that’s helpful because, after being out for so long, going into competitive games will be a challenge for footballers and we have to look after them injury-wise and fitness-wise.

“We can’t just flog one player and say to them: ‘You play every game and every minute,’ because it might be a period when we have to rotate quite often.”

Fifth-placed Manchester United face Tottenham Hotspur in their first game back on June 19.

No new positives in Premier League COVID-19 tests

The latest round of tests for COVID-19 in the English Premier League produced no positives, the league said on Saturday.


A total of 1,195 tests were carried out on Thursday and Friday, the sixth round of tests since players from England’s 20 top flight clubs returned to training.

The previous rounds of testing produced 13 positives.


No Premier League matches have taken place since March because of the coronavirus pandemic.


The pandemic has led to more than 50,000 deaths, according to a Reuters tally this week based on official sources.


But a restart of the suspended 2019/2020 season is scheduled for June 17.

Lionel Messi was back training on Saturday, although he did not join the session with his Barcelona teammates.


Messi had missed the Friday session at the club’s Joan Gamper Football City and Barcelona said “the captain has a small muscle contraction in the quadriceps of his right leg”.

On Saturday, he was out on the Camp Nou pitch, but trained with Nelson Semedo, who has a slight knee problem, and not with the rest of the team.


Barcelona are hopeful he will be fit for Saturday’s visit to Mallorca when the team play the first of their remaining 11 matches in La Liga.


They have a two-point lead over second placed Real Madrid.


It was also widely reported in Spanish media on Saturday that on Wednesday of the coming week, a clause in Messi’s contract, that allows him to leave the club on a free transfer this summer, expires.


According to the reports, Messi had to inform the club by June 10 if he wanted to exercise the clause, and the fact that he has not done so means he will be at Barcelona at least into the final year of his contract which runs until 2021.

Barcelona return to action from the coronavirus-enforced suspension away to Mallorca on June 13.


They lead La Liga by two points from arch-rivals Real Madrid with 11 games remaining.

Inter have reportedly expressed their desire to extend Victor Moses’ loan deal at the club beyond the end of the 2019/20 season.


According to Calcio Mercato, the Serie A club are eager to keep hold of the former Nigeria international.

The Nerazzurri remained keen on signing the 29-year-old to a permanent deal, but want Chelsea to reduce their €12 million asking price.


Moses joined Inter on a six-month contract in January after spending the first half of the season at Turkish Super Lig club Fenerbahce.


He has made seven appearances for Inter across all competitions this season, featuring in all those games on the right side of midfield.


He has persistently struggled with thigh injuries over the last few months and missed the club’s 2-0 loss to Juventus due to a thigh problem; their most recent league outing.


The Serie A is currently suspended due to the Coronavirus pandemic, which has halted world sport for the past few months, but Italian football is set to make a welcome return to action next week.

Turkish super Lig champions Galatasaray have reportedly expressed their desire to sign Nigeria International, Henry Onyekuru, on a permanent deal from French Ligue 1 side, AS Monaco.


According to Fanatik, Galatasaray is looking to buy the Super Eagles forward for a fee around €8 million to €10 million, but the Turkish super Lig giants are looking to sell some of their fringe players to finance the move.


Greek giants Olympiacos is also interested in signing Onyekuru this summer.


The 23-year-old Nigeria international struggled for regular playing time at AS Monaco with the likes of Wissam Ben Yedder, Islam Slimani and Gelson Martins ahead of him in the packing order.

Neymar's mother and her younger lover were questioned by Brazilian police over a domestic accident' that happened recently. 
 
It was reported that Nadine Goncalves, 52, called an ambulance after her boyfriend Tiago Ramos suffered an injury during a row in the couple's apartment in Santos last week Tuesday. 
 
Ramos reportedly had 12 stitches in his arm the next day with Brazilian reports stating the wound was caused by a glass. 
 
According to Rio de Janiero news outlet Extra, a neighbour claimed that Ms. Goncalves and Mr. Ramos were arguing in their apartment on the night in question. 
 
Unconfirmed reports say that the model punched a window during the row and that led to his injuries.  
 
A spokesperson for mother-of-two Ms Goncalves said: 'There was a domestic accident with Tiago.
 
'Nadine thought it best to call for an ambulance as a precaution but they are fine. Everything is fine.'
 
A spokesperson for footballer Neymar also said: 'They clarified there was no assault, just a domestic accident that left Tiago's arm badly injured. 
 
'He's still recovering. The two of them are doing well and continuing with their social distancing routines.'
 
Before now, there were reports that the pair had broken up after Neymar's mom found out that the model has been in homosexual relationships.
 
After the brief split in April, the Brazilian press stated the pair began dating again on May 21.
 
In another news, Mr. Ramos is facing allegations of assault from a previous woman he has dated. 44-year-old Rita Cumplido told a Brazilian TV station that the model attacked her whilst under the influence of alcohol.

England and Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling has backed protests taking place across the UK, saying "the only disease right now is the racism that we are fighting".

Thousands of people have taken part in Black Lives Matter marches in the UK, despite government warnings to avoid mass gatherings because of the threat of coronavirus.

"This is the most important thing at this moment in time because this is something that is happening for years and years," Sterling, 25, said.

Large protests have been held in London, Bristol, Manchester, Wolverhampton, Nottingham, Glasgow and Edinburgh following the death of American George Floyd.

Floyd, 46, died while being arrested on 25 May in Minneapolis. The four officers involved have since been charged over the death, which sparked days of protest in the US and demonstrations across the world.

Speaking to the BBC's Newsnight programme, Sterling said: "Just like the pandemic, we want to find a solution to stop it.

"At the same time, this is what all these protesters are doing. They are trying to find a solution and a way to stop the injustice they are seeing and they are fighting for their cause.

"As long as they are doing it peacefully and safely and not hurting anybody and not breaking into any stores, they continue to protest in this peaceful way."

Many sports people have spoken out in protest over Floyd's death, with Sterling's England team-mate Jadon Sancho making on-pitch statements in Germany's Bundesliga.

Sterling, whose City side return to Premier League action on 17 June, has previously spoken of racist abuse he has suffered and the media's portrayal of black players.

Asked whether speaking out makes his job as a footballer harder, he said: "First and foremost, I don't really think about my job when things like this happen. I think about what is right.

"And at this moment in time, there's only so much people can take. There's only so much communities and other backgrounds can take - especially black people.

"It's been going on for hundreds of years and people are tired and people are ready for change.

"I keep saying this word. I see a lot of people on social [media], supporting the cause. But this is something that needs more than just talking.

"We need to actually implement change and highlight the places that do need changes.

"But this is something that I myself will continue to do, and spark these debates and get people in my industry looking at themselves and thinking what they can do to give people an equal chance in this country.

"Hopefully other industries can do that, and everyday society and the system as well."

Former West Brom and England defender, James Hurst has been remanded in custody after coughing at police officers and telling them he had Coronavirus.
 
The 28-year-old who plays for Hednesford Town was arrested after losing his temper and swearing at officers.
 
The incident occurred in the garden of his lover’s home in Glasgow’s Drumchapel in April this year, and he admitted acting in a threatening or abusive manner towards the officers
 
The court heard on Monday that the ex-West Brom and Wrexham defender initially contacted the police claiming to be the victim of domestic abuse before officers became aware of a possible outstanding warrant against him.
 

 
When police confronted him, Hurst yelled: 'get my lawyer first.'
 
Prosecuting at Glasgow Sheriff Court, Mark Allan described the course of events: 'He immediately stated "I've got Covid, I'm going to cough and spit all over you".
 
'At that point, he began to cough in the faces of both officers as they were placing handcuffs on him. As he did this, he shouted "Have that".  
 
'He said he is from the Queen's country and all Scottish are slaves to him.'
 
Hurst, who has also played for Crawley Town, Torquay United and Wrexham, also reportedly said: 'You are not the law, you are civilians in uniform, Queen's country rules, you live in Scottish slums, I am superior.' 
 
Keith Tuck, defending, told the court Hurst, who now plays for non-league Hednesford Town, had aspirations of becoming a player/manager.
 
He added: "He is a man who in the past has had a successful career as a professional footballer and has qualifications in football as a coach in England."
 
Sheriff Tony Kelly deferred sentence until the end of the month for background reports, while Hurst has been remanded in custody in the meantime.

Brazil withdraws bid to host Women's World Cup in 2023 due to financial fears caused by the impacts of COVID-19 pandemic








Brazil has withdrawn its candidacy to host the 2023 Women's World Cup, due to financial fears in the wake of the Coronavirus pandemic.


The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) said in a statement the administration of President Jair Bolsonaro told FIFA it could not offer financial guarantees “due to the scenario of fiscal and economic austerity, caused by the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.”


The confederation “understands the position of caution of the Brazilian government, and of other public and private partners, which stopped them from formalizing the commitments within time or in the required form,” the statement added.

 

Brazil's withdrawal means Colombia, Japan, and a joint bid from Australia and New Zealand are the remaining contenders to host the 32-team tournament. But the Confederation will support Colombia’s bid against Japan and the joint candidacy of Australia and New Zealand because South America has never hosted the tournament. 


A decision is expected on June 25.


Brazil has the second-highest number of Coronavirus cases worldwide with more than 691,700. The country is also the hardest hit by COVID-19 in Latin America.

Nigerian youngster, Tino Anjorin signs five-year contract with Chelsea









Tino Anjorin has committed his long-term future to Chelsea by signing a new five-year contract with the Premier League club.

 

The 18-year-old midfielder, born to a Nigerian father and English mother in Poole will now be tied to the Blues until June 2025.

 

‘It’s a brilliant feeling,’ the England Under-19 international told the official Chelsea website after putting pen to paper on the new deal. ‘I’ve been at the club since I was six years old so to get to this stage and then be offered another five-year contract on top of that is amazing.

 

‘I had no hesitation but to take it straight away because to play for the club I always dreamed of playing for is really special for me.’

 

‘It’s been a really crucial season for young players here,’ Anjorin went on. ‘Frank, Jody Morris and Joe Edwards have taken us on board and really committed themselves to bringing young players through.

 

‘It’s been really important to have those familiar faces around,’ he said of the former Academy coaches who are now working alongside Lampard. ‘It’s easy to talk to people and be around the first team building more because you’re welcomed in.

Hoffenheim have sacked head coach Alfred Schreuder with four games left in Bundesliga season
 
The news was announced on Tuesday morning with Schreuder becoming the first manager to be sacked since the Bundesliga's restart last month.
 
"We had different views on important details, so a cooperation beyond the end of the season no longer makes sense," said Hoffenheim chief Alexander Rosen in a statement on the club's website.
 
"I was aware right from the start that the task in Hoffenheim would be a great challenge. The work has filled me with great joy. I thank the club for giving me the opportunity to work in the German Bundesliga," said Alfred Schreuder, who joined Hoffenheim before this season, committing himself to a deal until 2022.
 
"Unfortunately, we were unable to agree on a common path to take TSG into the future. I regret this development. However, it is not unusual to have different opinions in professional life. You have to be honest with each other and draw the appropriate conclusions," he added.
 
With four games left to play this season, Hoffenheim sits seventh in the German league table.

Brazil and Barcelona legend, Ronaldinho has opened up on his 'sixty long days' as he remains under house arrest in Paraguay for allegedly using a fake passport to enter South American country.
 
The 40-year-old and his brother Roberto were arrested in March after police found passports bearing their names with Paraguayan nationality despite having their Brazilian passports confiscated in 2018.
 
They spent 32 days in prison before they were released from jail in April and then transferred to a luxury hotel where they kept them under house arrest.
 
Ronaldinho, who reportedly paid a £1.3million bond for himself and his brother to be released says he is 'very calm' and is doing 'anything to pass time in the most pleasant way possible'.
 

He told Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo: 'It has been sixty long days.'
 
Comparing his house arrest to those who have been isolating in their homes during lockdown because of the coronavirus pandemic, he said: 'People in their homes must imagine what it must be like not being able to do what you are used to.
 
'I think that is something that will remain with us all forever after living in this complicated experience.
 
'I hope that soon everything will return to normal and we can return to our homes. Hopefully, everything will be as before.'

Lille striker Victor Osimhen, is the most expensive Nigerian player with a price tag of 64.3 million euros (approximately N29.9 billion in Nigerian currency) according to a new study conducted by CIES Football Observatory.
 
The Nigerian striker is the fifth most valuable player in the French Ligue 1 behind PSG's Kylian Mbappe (€259.2m), Marquinhos Aoás(€89.2m), Neymar (€82.7m) and Houssem Aouar (€69.2m).
 
Osimhen, 21, moved to Lille in August 2019 for a fee of 12 million euros and has a contract with the club until 2024.

While Osimhen is the 66th most expensive player in the world, Ndidi is 94 overall. 
In the new study, he outranked Leicester City midfielder Wilfred Ndidi the only other Nigerian player listed in the top 100 , who has an estimated value of 49.5 million euros.

Adam Lallana agrees new contract with Liverpool allowing him to see out Premier League title bid paused by Covid-19







Liverpool forward, Adam Lallana, has agreed a short term extension to his Liverpool contract after his initial deal with the club ended on the 1st of June after the Premier League season was paused due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

 
Lallana who was already a free agent and could talk to new clubs, opted against joining another club, choosing to stick with Liverpool's 2019-20 premier league season title pursuit  halted by the Covid-19 pandemic.
 
He has now signed a contract that will keep him at the club till the end of this season
 

 
Reds boss Jurgen Klopp told the club’s official website on Tuesday evening: “I know how highly sought after Adam is in this moment by other clubs who want him for next season, so for him this is a commitment to us and we are very appreciative to him for it.


“This is absolutely how it should be, too, because I am so pleased he will be with us to finish the job this season and have the farewell he deserves so much.


“It is not possible for me to find words in the English language to properly explain the importance of Adam Lallana during my period of being manager of this club.


“But, to be honest, now is not the time for these words. Because of this news – that he stays until we finish this campaign – I can say all the things I want and need to when our season is concluding next month.


“What I can say – and want to say – now is even the way he has handled this extension tells you all you need to know about the person and his character. A top-class professional and an even better person.

Stoke City manager Michael O'Neill tests positive for COVID-19









Stoke City manager, Michael O'Neill has tested positive for COVID-19 after the latest round of testing on Monday.
 
A planned friendly match between Stoke and Manchester United which was to take place at the Carrington training base was dramatically cancalled at the last minute on Tuesday after they recieved the news. 
 
It's understood that O'Neill, 50, was tested for the sixth time on Monday and his positive result came back from the EFL after the Stoke squad arrived at Carrington for the friendly match.
 
A club statement read: ‘Stoke City can confirm that manager Michael O'Neill has tested positive for the Covid-19 virus following the latest round of testing on Monday. O'Neill had tested negative in the previous five rounds of testing.
 
‘He will now follow the relevant guidance and undergo a period of isolation, whilst continuing to be in regular virtual contact with his coaching staff and players.
 
‘Assistant manager Billy McKinlay will take charge of training as the Potters prepare for their game against Reading on June 20.’

IOC says rule banning protests will remain in place at 2021 Tokyo Olympics








The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has confirmed that athletes are still banned from protesting at the Olympic Games after several sports decided to allow protests in the wake of George Floyd's death.

The IOC told the Telegraph the guidelines were still in place and that it would not speculate on "hypothetical cases 13 months before the Olympic Games".

Rule 50 of the Olympic Charter states "no kind of demonstration or political, religious or racial propaganda is permitted in any Olympic sites, venues or other areas."

According to the publication, athletes who breach the rule are subject to discipline on a case-by-case basis and the IOC issued guidelines in January clarifying that banned protests include taking a knee and other gestures.

Anti-racism movements are expected to be discussed at an IOC executive board meeting on Wednesday, June 10, 2020.

Pedro scores as Chelsea defeat Reading ahead of Aston Villa clash

Chelsea returned to action for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic forced the Premier League to be put on hold, beating Reading 1-0 in a friendly played on Wednesday afternoon at Cobham.


Pedro scored the only goal of the match in the first-half to give Frank Lampard’s men a 1-0 victory against the Championship side.

N’Golo Kante, who returned to contact training on Tuesday, was among those who played, as were, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Billy Gilmour, and Christian Pulisic.


English Premier League (EPL) clubs have been given the all-clear to play friendlies ahead of the scheduled restart on June 17.


Recall that EPL has been on suspension for almost three months due to the coronavirus pandemic.


Chelsea, who are fourth in the standings, are away to Aston Villa on June 21.

EPL: Cazorla responds to Arteta’s offer over return to Arsenal

Former Arsenal midfielder, Santi Cazorla, has responded to Manager Mikel Arteta’s offer for him to return to Emirates.


Cazorla, who currently plays for Villarreal, had reportedly been offered the chance to work as a coach in the North London club by Arteta this summer after he retires from football.

The 35-year-old and Arteta were former teammates at Arsenal.

Cazorla’s current deal with Villarreal will expire at the end of the season.


Speaking on the development, Cazorla said he has made a decision on his future but would not reveal anything yet, adding that he may wish to continue playing for at least another season.


“I have already made my decision, but right now is not the time to say anything,” Cazorla told Cadena SER.
“I have an idea of what I want, but in due course, I will reveal what I have decided.


“Now is not the time because we have to be focused on competing.

“[The season suspension] has helped me think, listen to my body, but I do not want to pre-empt you or to speculate too much.”

Cazorla added: “I do not know [if I will continue my playing career elsewhere], I have an idea, but when the time comes I will communicate it and give the explanations.

“I want to remain linked to football. I could be a coach, but I see myself more in a sporting director role.”

Cazorla won two FA Cup titles during his six years at Arsenal under former Gunners manager, Arsene Wenger.

Anthony Joshua, Tyson Fury reach deal for two fights

Anthony Joshua’s agent, Eddie Hearn, has disclosed that the boxer and Tyson Fury have agreed on a deal in principle to fight each other twice.
Hearn has been in negotiations with Fury’s camp for several weeks and has now said terms have been agreed upon.

Although no contracts have been signed yet, Hearn expects Joshua who is the WBA, IBF and WBO belt holder to take on WBC champion Fury, to determine the undisputed heavyweight king.


“We’re making great progress. There is still a lot to overcome. We are looking at venues and dates,” Hearn told Sky Sports on Wednesday.


“We’re in a good place. It’s fair to say that, in principle, both guys have agreed to that fight. Two fights.


“(There’s) a lot to overcome in the meantime. We’re moving in the right direction. I’m confident that both guys have given their blessings for the fight to go ahead.”

According to Hearn, the first bout could take place in the summer of 2021.

Joshua is billed to fight Bulgarian Kubrat Pulev next, while Fury has a rematch with American Deontay Wilder.
