Coronavirus cases surpass 100,000 worldwide 







COVID-19 cases have now surpassed 100,000 worldwide since the flu-like coronavirus broke out from Wuhan in China.
 
The total number of cases now stands at 100,055 as of 8 a.m. ET on Friday, according to data compiled by John Hopkins. The majority of the cases are in mainland China, followed by South Korea, Iran and Italy. In the United States, there are at least 233 cases and 14 deaths, according to John Hopkins. 
 
At least 3,398 people have died due to the virus globally.
 
On Thursday, the World Health Organization called on all nations to “pull out all the stops” to fight the COVID-19 outbreak as it continues to spread Worldwide. 
 
“This epidemic can be pushed back but only with a coordinated and comprehensive approach that engages the entire machinery of government,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said during a press briefing at the agency’s headquarters in Geneva. “We’re calling on every country to act with speed, scale and clear-minded determination.”

Togo confirms first case of coronavirus






The Togolese Ministry of Health on Friday March 6, confirmed the country's first coronavirus case. 
 
The patient who tested positive for the novel coronavirus known as COVID-19 in the country, is a 42-year-old woman who recently travelled to Benin, France, Germany, and Turkey in late February and early March. 
 
In a statement released by the Togolese government, it was gathered that coronavirus case is currently being isolated at an infectious disease treatment center. There is also no major concerns regarding her health.
 
Togo has now joined the growing list of African countries with coronavirus cases and they include Cameroon, Senegal, South Africa, Nigeria, Tunisia and Algeria.

Italy quarantines 16 million people over coronavirus












Italy has placed up to 16 million people under quarantine in a bid to stop the rapid spread of coronavirus.
 
Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte on Sunday issued a decree restricting the movement of 16 million people in the country including the Lombardy region and at least 14 provinces in neighboring regions. Milan, Modena, Parma, Piacenza, and Venice are also affected.
 
The Prime Minister also announced the closure of schools, gyms, museums, nightclubs and other venues across the whole country.
 
“For Lombardy and for the other northern provinces that I have listed, there will be a ban for everybody to move in and out of these territories and also within the same territory," Conte said. "Exceptions will be allowed only for proven professional needs, exceptional cases and health issues.”
 
"We want to guarantee the health of our citizens. We understand that these measures will impose sacrifices, sometimes small and sometimes very big." 
 
"We are facing an emergency, a national emergency. We have to limit the spread of the virus and prevent our hospitals from being overwhelmed."
 
The measures will last until the 3rd of April 2020. 
 
This comes a day after Italy reported its biggest daily increase in coronavirus cases since its outbreak last month. The number of infected people rose to 1,247, taking their total to 5,883 with the death toll rising to 233.

Volunteers to be infected with coronavirus for £3,500 in an attempt to find a vaccine that cures the ailment







Volunteers will reportedly receive £3,500 to be purposefully infected with coronavirus in a bid to find a cure for the deadly virus.
 
To find a vaccine for the virus, volunteers in east London are being paid to be intentionally infected with coronavirus and live in quarantine at the Queen Mary BioEnterprises Innovation Centre in Whitechapel.
 
Willing participants will be injected with two common but much less serious strains of the virus, reports the Daily Star.
 
Hvivo, the company behind the laboratory at Queen Mary, will be infecting 24 volunteers at a time with the 0C43 and 229E strains of the virus. It is thought these strains will cause mild respiratory symptoms and be much less severe than the coronavirus that is currently spreading around the globe.
 
It is thought a vaccine can be developed from this testing that would tackle the destructive virus.
 
Anyone who has volunteered to take part in this study will have to stay in quarantine for two weeks.
 
There will be some restrictions placed on the participants during this time, including no exercise or physical contact with other people. They will only be able to eat and drink certain foods.
 
Any nurses or doctors who work on this study will have to wear ventilators and protective clothes while they are working in the lab or with any material that may be infected with the virus, such as dirty tissues or blood tests.
 
The UK's Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency will have to agree on Hvivo's plans before this experiment can take place.
 
This testing is part of a $2bn global effort to find a vaccine for coronavirus. Over 20 Covid-19 vaccines are currently being developed, according to the World Health Organisation.
 
Following the experiment, the most effective drugs and vaccines will be chosen, and these will be used on patients who naturally contract coronavirus.

 Nicola Zingaretti Contracts Coronavirus In Italy


The leader of Italy’s co-ruling Democratic Party (PD), Nicola Zingaretti, said on Saturday he had tested positive for coronavirus becoming the first senior Italian politician to be infected.

“I have coronavirus too”, Zingaretti said in a video posted on Facebook, adding he was well and in self-isolation at home.

Italy has been the country hit hardest by the epidemic in Europe with a total of 4,636 cases and 197 deaths as of Friday, and is reporting more deaths per day form the virus than any other nation in the world.

The government this week ordered the closure of schools, universities, cinemas and theaters to stem infections.

The case of Zingaretti, who is also governor of the central region of Lazio, which includes the capital Rome, could cause concern among government ranks given the frequent contacts he has with ministers, regional administrators and PD members.

In his message, Zingaretti said his family was following the required protocols and all the people he had been in contact with in recent days were being contacted for checks.

“I said it before, no panic. Let’s fight. I will set a good example and follow to the letter the rules set by doctors and scientists,” he said.

Italy’s Industry Minister Stefano Patuanelli has put himself in isolation after one of his aides tested positive. Attilio Fontana, regional governor of the northern region of Lombardy, the most affected area of the country, did the same thing.

Politicians of all stripes sent Zingaretti messages of support.

“In this emergency our common enemy is the coronavirus, we’ll only be able to defeat it if we stay united and work together,” said Vito Crimi, the caretaker leader of the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement which governs with the PD.

D.C. priest who distributed communion and shook hands with more than 500 worshippers tests positive for coronavirus







A D.C. priest who distributed communion and shook hands more than 500 worshippers has become the first confirmed Covid-19 case in Washington, DC.
 
Reverend Timothy Cole of  Christ Church, Georgetown identified himself as a confirmed novel coronavirus patient in a letter to congregants this week. He reportedly received the diagnosis about a week after he participated in Sunday services attended by around 550 people on March 1, including one service in which he helped distribute Holy Communion. 
 
Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Mayor Muriel Bowser said Rev. Timothy Cole is hospitalized, referring to the man as "patient one."
 
He also asked members of the church who visited Church either on February 24 or between February 28 and March 3, to self-quarantine themselves. 
 
"As of late last night, DC Health is recommending that anyone who visited Christ Church, Georgetown, either on February 24 or between February 28 and March 3, self-quarantine themselves at home for 14 days since the last time they visited the church," Bowser said.
 
Rev.Cole also released a statement on Monday to address the situation. 
 
“As we said before, we did not make the decision to close our doors lightly, but out of an abundance of caution for the most vulnerable among us,” Cole said. “There is no need to panic. Following sensible precautions provided by the CDC will go a long way towards ensuring the good health of our community.”

“I can now confirm that I am the individual who tested positive for the coronavirus,” he said.
 
He added that he will “be okay” and is “receiving excellent care."
 
The church announced on Monday that all services and activities have been suspended until further notice.

All of Italy is on lockdown as coronavirus cases rise








Italy is taking aggressive measures to contain the coronavirus outbreak, including travel restrictions in and out of the country as the whole of Italy has been placed under lockdown as coronavirus continues to spread in Europe’s worst-affected country.
 
"All the measure of the red zones are now extended to all of the national territory," Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said at a press conference on Monday evening as he also announced a ban on all public events until next month.
 
According to the Prime Minister, the move was taken in order to protect the population, and especially the most fragile individuals. 
 
The lockdown will affect over 60 million people in Italy, including the islands of Sicily and Sardinia.
 
The country has 9,172 cases so far, the most of any European country, while 463 people have died of the novel coronavirus.

In some of the images, the patients are pictured on their hospital beds as they get treated by medical staff suited up in hazmat-style gear in Cremona, northern Italy. Some of the patients were attached to life support, while others were seen lying face down in order to improve their oxygen levels.
 

 
Dr. Daniele Macchini of Humanitas Gavazzeni, who is one of the Italian intensive care doctors treating coronavirus patients in Bergamo, Lombardy, has likened the virus to war.
 
He said: "After much thought about whether and what to write about what is happening to us, I felt that silence was not responsible.
 
"I will therefore try to convey to people far from our reality what we are living in Bergamo in these days of Covid-19 pandemic. I understand the need not to create panic, but when the message of the danger of what is happening does not reach people I shudder.
 

 
"I saw with some amazement the reorganisation of the entire hospital in the past week, when our enemy was still in the shadows: the wards slowly emptied, elective treatments were interrupted, intensive care was freed up to create as many beds as possible.
 
"All this brought a surreal emptiness to the corridors of the hospital, waiting for a war that was yet to begin and that many (including me) were not sure would ever come with such ferocity.

Coronavirus ‘kills 180 soldiers’ in North Korea as diplomats flee country






According to new reports, almost 200 North Korean soldiers have been killed by coronavirus forcing diplomats to leave the Asian hermit nation as the virus takes a grip round the world.

According to the Daily NK, the Covid-19 strain of coronavirus has killed 180 soldiers, while more than 3,700 have been quarantined and this information was revealed in a document sent by army medics to North Korea's military chiefs..

According to the Daily NK report, Kim Jong Un's military has been struggling to cremate the dead soldiers as the death toll increases daily with the government now allowing foreign diplomats to leave the country after banning them from doing so for the last one month.

‘I haven’t heard of corpses being cremated in military hospitals,’ the North Korean military source said to Daily NK.
‘The military leadership likely believes that suddenly asking the hospitals to cremate all the bodies would create a big headache for medical staff.’
 
The report comes after a chartered flight carrying dozens of Russian diplomats fleeing North Korea arrived in Russia today. Most of them were wearing face masks, with some accompanied by children.
 
Russian state news agency Tass says there were about 60 foreigners aboard the flight, including 13 Russian citizens.

Italians poured out of their homes in the country's north this afternoon after an earthquake shook Tuscany amid the nation's growing coronavirus outbreak.

The 2.6-magnitude quake, which struck around a mile north of Camaiore, was recorded by the Italian Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology at 2.17pm local time.

It had an epicenter in the Lucca province in Tuscany and a depth of around five miles, ANSA reported.

There were initially no reports of damage as a result of the tremor, though people in Camaiore and nearby Viareggio noted feeling 'vibrations from the ground'.

It was also reported people across Versilia had 'poured out of their houses' when the quake struck the area this afternoon.

The earthquake comes as the coronavirus death toll reached 463 in Italy, with more than 9,000 virus cases confirmed across the stricken nation.

Prime minister Giuseppe Conte declared last night that 'everyone must give up something to protect the health of citizens'.

Anyone with a fever has been ordered to stay indoors with travel banned except in emergencies and public gatherings including weddings, funerals and sports fixtures shut down.

The virus is spreading so quickly that doctors are now having to make life-or-death decisions about who gets access to intensive care.

Italian health officials had warned on Saturday that the northern Lombardy region was starting to run out of hospital beds for its intensive care patients.

The government also began to recall retired doctors as part of an effort to quickly bolster the health service with 20,000 staff.

Ethics rules call on doctors to consider a patient's age and their chance of survival when allocating hospital beds.

The Italian society of anesthesiology and intensive care has published 15 ethical recommendations to consider for doctors when deciding on admissions.

The criteria include the patient's age and the likelihood of survival, and not just 'first come first served.'

'It's a reasoning that our colleagues make,' Dr. Guido Giustetto, head of the association of doctors in northern Piedmont, said yesterday.

'It becomes dramatic if, rather than doing it under normal situations, they do it because the beds are so scarce that someone might not have access to medical care.'

Italy expanded its quarantine measures to all 60million people in the country last night after a lockdown in the hardest-hit north, including Milan and Venice, had failed to slow the outbreak.

'Our habits must be changed, changed now. We all have to give up something for the good of Italy,' prime minister Conte said.

'When I speak of Italy, I speak of our dear ones, of our grandparents and of our parents,' he said.

'We will succeed only if we all collaborate and we adapt right away to these more stringent norms.'

Conte also raged at young people who had continued to gather socially as the virus spread, saying 'this night life ... we can't allow this any more.'

The nationwide restrictions mean that all schools and universities will remain closed until April 3, with cafes, pubs and eateries ordered to close until dusk.

Italians have been ordered not to move around the country except for work and emergencies, with public gatherings and football matches cancelled.

 Coronavirus: Nadine Dorries Tests Positive For Deadly Virus 


Health minister and Conservative MP Nadine Dorries says she has tested positive for coronavirus.

She said in a statement that as soon as she was informed she took all the advised precautions and had been self-isolating at home.

It comes as a sixth person died from the virus in the UK, which has a total of 382 cases.

The latest person to die was a man in his early 80s who had underlying health conditions.

GPs are warning that routine appointments at surgeries may have to stop as the number of coronavirus cases rises.

The British Medical Association said routine monitoring of long-term health conditions might have to stop to enable GPs to "focus on the sickest patients".

The case of coronavirus was first reported in Nigeria before South Africa, but as of today, South Africa has higher infection cases than Nigeria. Six new cases of the virus has been confirmed by the South Africa Health Ministry; bringing the total to 13.

The patients which are currently infected are:

1. A 33-year-old female that had travelled to Italy and returned on 1 March

2. A couple - a 34-year-old and a 33-year-old - who travelled to Germany and returned on 9 March

3. A 57-year-old who travelled to Austria and Italy and returned on 8 March

4. A 40-year-old who travelled to Portugal and returned on 7 March

5. A 36-year-old who travelled to multiple countries including Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Turkey. He returned on 9 March.

This is coming few weeks when some unpatriotic South Africans thought that the virus was going to spread real fast in Nigeria.

The major cause of the fast spreading of the coronavirus is in countries like South Africa and Iran is carelessness and unbelieve.

Why carelessness contributes to the spread of the virus is that, when health authorities advice the public on precautions, they take it for granted. They use common sense which is not common to analyse the situation.

For instance, World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) advised people to be careful with the way they handle money, because it could serve as a means of infection, but some will still be careless with the way they handle cash.

When the first advice came from World Health Organisation, regarding being infected through money, most people try to play it down by using biblical verses. The truth is that, JESUS CHRIST himself knew there was Psalm 91, when the Devil came to tempt him, but he rather reboked the Devil when he came to tempt him.

We know God answers prayers of the faithful, but we should not play down the grace by doubting every important precautions the healthcare agencies passed to us.

Every life is precious before God, therefore don't think it is because of the sin of a particular country that makes the case of coronavirus keeps increasing in the country.

No, it is not; it is human factors that is causing the increase in some countries. And the human factors are CARELESSNESS and UNBELIEVE.

As a good Nigerian, it is your responsibility to spread the news of precautions.

 Coronavirus: Trump Bans Travel From Europe To Us 










Donald Trump has suspended all flights from mainland Europe to the US for 30 days following the spread of coronavirus cases across the continent. The US president said the sanctions will come into effect from midnight - but will not apply to flights from the UK.

He blamed the European Union for not acting quickly enough to address the outbreak of the virus and said US
clusters were "seeded" by European travellers. The president said the US would monitor the situation to determine if travel could be reopened earlier. Mr Trump said "we are marshalling the full power" of the government and private sector to protect the American people.

Actor Tom Hanks and wife, Rita test positive for coronavirus







Hollywood actor, Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson have tested positive for coronavirus while filming in Australia.
 
The 63-year-old Academy Award-winning actor who is currently on the Gold Coast in Queensland filming Baz Luhrmann’s untitled production about Elvis Presley, made the announcement via Instagram. 
 
Tom Hanks revealed that they tested positive for coronavirus after feeling “a bit tired, like we had colds”. 
 
He wrote; 
 

Hello, folks. Rita and I are down here in Australia. We felt a bit tired, like we had colds, and some body aches. Rita had some chills that came and went. Slight fevers too. To play things right, as is needed in the world right now, we were tested for the Coronavirus, and were found to be positive.

Well, now. What to do next? The Medical Officials have protocols that must be followed. We Hanks’ will be tested, observed, and isolated for as long as public health and safety requires. Not much more to it than a one-day-at-a-time approach, no?

The  63-year-old cleric who is one of the most prominent Shia leaders in Iraq and comes from a long line of active scholars, was quoted saying in February 2020; 
 

“It is obvious that the spread of this virus is an act of Allah. How do we know this? The spread of the coronavirus began in China, an ancient and vast country, the population of which makes up one seventh of humanity. 
“More than a billion people live in that country. The authorities in that country are tyrannical and they laid siege to more than a million Muslims and placed them under house arrest. The journalists in that country began to mock the niqab of Muslim women and they forced Muslim men to eat pork and drink wine. Allah sent a disease upon them and this disease laid siege to 40 million [Chinese people]. The same niqab that they mocked has been forced upon them, both men and women, by Allah, by means of the state authorities and officials."

The coronavirus cases in Italy have climbed by 31%, from 196 to 827, in the last 24 hours and this has resulted in the country taking drastic measures to reduce the spread of the deadly virus.

On Monday a government decree in Italy stopped non-essential travel between cities and banned public gatherings. This has led to emptied streets and closed down everything from churches to restaurants.
 
It comes as total confirmed infections in Europe rose to 22,485 with 940 deaths, according to a new tally which is compiled from official sources.
 
In Italy, the number has risen to 12,462 cases with 827 fatalities.

Denmark becomes second country in Europe to go on coronavirus lockdown




 



Denmark has gone into total 14-day lockdown in other to halt the spread of coronavirus after an increase in cases. 
 
At a press conference on Wednesday evening, Denmark’s Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen announced that the country will close all kindergartens, schools, and universities for two weeks to slow the spread of the coronavirus.
 
In a press conference yesterday, Ms. Frederiksen said: 'This will have huge consequences, but the alternative would be far worse.
 
'Under normal circumstances, a government would not present such far-reaching measures without having all the solutions ready for the many Danes concerned.

'But we are in an extraordinary situation.'

According to The Local, the Prime Minister added: 'We will not get through this as a country without a cost. Businesses will close. Some will lose their jobs. 

'We will do what we can to mitigate the consequences for employees.' 

Indoor events with 100 or more participants will also be been banned as part of the tough new measures being introduced from Monday.

The decision comes after the Danish Patient Safety Authority reported 442 new cases of coronavirus on Wednesday evening, bringing the number of people in quarantine to 1,303. 

Søren Brostrøm, the director of the Danish Health Authority told local media that he expects the number of cases to increase even more rapidly in the coming days and weeks after the World Health Organisation officially declared it a pandemic.
 
‘It is not only a threat for Denmark, but for the whole world. That is why the WHO has today declared Covid-19 to be a pandemic’.

Denmark is the second country in Europe to impose strict lockdown measures, after Italy.

Piers Morgan criticizes Trump's travel ban on almost all European countries due to coronavirus






Piers Morgan is questioning Donald Trump's decision to suspend all flights to the US from Europe for 30 days.
 
Trump announced on Wednesday that the United States will bar entry from 26 European countries, except the UK and Ireland, for a month, as coronavirus cases in the US exceed 1,200 with at least 37 deaths.
 
Piers, who is friends with Donald Trump, didn't agree with Trump's decision and he took to Twitter to question it.
 
Piers wrote: "Why would US citizens travelling back from Europe to America be less of a coronavirus risk than European citizens? I don't understand this travel ban by President Trump - none of it makes sense."

Spain's Equality Minister tests positive for coronavirus






Spain's equality minister, Irene Montero has tested positive for coronavirus as confirmed in a statement released by the country's government on Thursday March 12. 
 
Irene Montero has been quarantined along with her partner, deputy prime minister and Podemos leader Pablo Iglesias. 
 
The European country which has reported 55 deaths due to the deadly virus and nearly 2,300 people being infected, also disclosed in the statement that all members of the Executive will be tested on March 12 and results will be made available in the afternoon.
 
It was further learnt that staff and players of Real Madrid have been kept under 15-day quarantine after an NBA player tested positive. Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez will also hold all meetings via video conference starting from Thursday March 12.

Canada suspends all existing visas except diplomatic visas as it quarantines itself amid coronavirus crisis






Canada has quarantined itself by suspending all existing visas, except diplomatic, official, and UN visas, amid the coronavirus crisis.
 
After WHO declared COVID-19 a global pandemic, the Canadian Government announced a travel advisory for all air passengers travelling to and from Canada.
 
It was announced that from March 13, 2020, all existing visas to Canada will be suspended till May 15, 2020. 
 
It was also announced that "visa free travel facility is kept in abeyance till April 15th 2020."
 
In addition, all travellers arriving in Canada, including Canadian nationals, will be quarantined for a minimum period of 14 days, starting from tomorrow, March 13, 2020.
