Famous Cameroonian saxophonist Emmanuel N'Djoke Dibango, popularly known as Manu Dibango, has died of coronavirus.

He died on Tuesday morning at a hospital outside the French capital, Paris.

The 86-year-old jazz musician had last week announced on his Facebook page that he had contracted the coronavirus.

He is best known for the 1972 hit Soul Makossa.

Hantavirus trends on Twitter as it's reported that a person from Yunnan Province died after testing positive for Hantavirus







As the world is battling the novel coronavirus, it's been reported that a man has died in Yunnan province, China, after he tested positive to Hantavirus. 

The man died while on his way back to Shandong Province for work on a chartered bus, China’s Global Times reported.
 
32 other people who were on the bus with him have been tested, the report added.
 

 
Following the report of his death, Hantavirus became a trending topic on social media, with people panicking that it was another COVID-19 and could become a new pandemic.
 
However, it's been reported that Hantavirus is not a new virus and is not airborne, unlike coronavirus.
 
Hantavirus is contracted when a person comes into contact with rodents that carry the virus.
 
"Rodent infestation in and around the home remains the primary risk for hantavirus exposure. Even healthy individuals are at risk for HPS infection if exposed to the virus," Centre for Disease Control and Prevention said in its website.
 
Although HPS can't be passed on from person to person, it can be contracted if someone touches their eyes, nose or mouth after touching rodent droppings, urine, or nesting materials, states Centers for Disease Control and Prevention fact sheet.
 

 
Among the early symptoms of the virus include fever, headache, muscle ache, abdominal pain, dizziness, chills and abdominal problems, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea. About half of all HPS patients experience these symptoms.
 
Late symptoms include lungs fill with fluid and shortness of breath.

South Africa goes into total lockdown amid coronavirus crisis







The South African Government has announced that the nation will be going into total lockdown from Thursday March 26, in a bid to curb the spread of coronavirus in the country. 
 
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the measures after coronavirus cases in the country increased from 274 to 402 on Monday March 23. 
 
According to Ramaphosa, the stay-at-home order which will be effective till April 16 does not apply to essential services personnel, including police, health care workers and those involved in the supply of goods, including food.
 
He said in his address to the nation;
 

“We need to urgently and dramatically escalate our response. 
“The next few days are crucial. Without decisive action the number of people infected will rapidly increase. 
 “This is extremely dangerous for a population like ours, which has a a large number of people with suppressed immunity because of HIV and TB, and high levels of poverty and malnutrition.”

 
The country which is currently in recession will be the third country in Africa to close down all but essential economic activity, after Rwanda and Tunisia. 
 
From figures released by South Africa's Health Ministry, more than half of South Africa's total cases are in Gauteng province, which includes Johannesburg, the country's largest city with 5.7 million people, and the capital, Pretoria, with 2.4 million. 
 
Though no coronavirus death has been recorded in the country, majority of people infected are travelers from Europe and other countries. The number of cases that are locally transmitted is also rising. 
 
With the 128 new cases, South Africa as of Monday had the most virus cases in Africa, surpassing Egypt.

COVID-19 pandemic is accelerating - WHO chief, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warns as cases pass 300,000







The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that the coronavirus disease pandemic is "accelerating" and that almost every country in the world have reported cases of the viral disease.
 
Speaking at a news conference in Geneva on Monday March 23rd, WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said more than 300,000 cases have been confirmed around the world.
 
He added that it took 67 days to confirm the first one hundred thousand cases, 11 days to confirm the second one hundred thousand cases and just four days to confirm the third one hundred thousand cases.

Man dies after self medicating for COVID-19 with a drug Donald Trump promoted as a potential treatment







An elderly man has died and his wife is in critical condition after the couple took chloroquine phosphate, a drug President Donald Trump touted as a treatment for COVID-19
 
Chloroquine phosphate is an additive used to clean fish tanks. It is also found in an anti-malaria medication.
 
It has been promoted by President Donald Trump as a treatment for COVID-19, but health officials say it hasn't been tested properly.
 
Banner Health said Monday that the couple in their 60s got sick within half an hour of ingesting the chloroquine phosphate. The man couldn’t be resuscitated when he arrived at a hospital, but the woman was able to throw up much of the chemical, Banner said.
 
It’s unclear if the Phoenix-area couple took it specifically because of COVID-19, but now Banner Health is warning everyone to avoid self-medicating.
 
"Given the uncertainty around COVID-19, we understand that people are trying to find new ways to prevent or treat this virus, but self-medicating is not the way to do so," said Dr. Daniel Brooks, Banner Poison and Drug Information Center medical director.
 
"The last thing that we want right now is to inundate our emergency departments with patients who believe they found a vague and risky solution that could potentially jeopardize their health."
 
At a news conference last week, Trump falsely stated that the Food and Drug Administration had just approved the use of an anti-malaria medication called chloroquine to treat patients infected with coronavirus.
 
Even after the FDA chief clarified that the drug still needs to be tested for that use, Trump overstated the drug’s potential upside in containing the virus.
 
Chloroquine is obtained by prescription, and Banner Health is now urging medical providers against prescribing it to people who aren’t hospitalized.

Spain's coronavirus cases rise to 39,673 as death toll jumps to 2,696 after 514 patients died in 24 hours









Spanish authorities have reported 6,600 new coronavirus cases with the country's death jumping to 2,696 after 514 patients died in 24 hours.
 
With the new cases, Spain now has a total number of 39,673 people infected with the disease and 2,696 deaths, according to Spain's health ministry.
 
Spain is the worst affected country in Europe after Italy, which has recorded more than 6,000 deaths so far.
 
Globally, there are more than 380,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus and 17, 226 deaths.

Tottenham coach, Jose Mourinho, was photographed helping two charities deliver foodstuffs and essential goods to the elderly on Monday evening as the world battles for survival during the coronavirus pandemic.
 

 
The former Chelsea coach worked alongside charities Age UK and Love Your DoorStep in Enfield, North London helping to prepare food parcels and other items to deliver to the aged who are the more vulnerable members of the community during the coronavirus pandemic.

'I am here to help Age UK Enfield, Love Your DoorStep Enfield and of course you can donate food, money or be a volunteer,' Mourinho said on a video posted by Love Your DoorStep's Twitter account.

Pep Guardiola and Lionel Messi donate €1million each to help fight coronavirus







Manchester City football manager Pep Guardiola alongside Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi have each contributed a whooping €1million to help Spain and Argentina in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.


According to Spanish media reports, Guardiola sent the money (equivalent to his monthly wage at Manchester City) to Barcelona Medical College and the Angel Soler Daniel foundation, a foundation named after a doctor from Santpedor, the town in Barcelona Guardiola hails from. 
 
Guardiola made the financial pledge on Tuesday following an appeal by the foundation over the weekend as the Spanish government declared a state of emergency on Saturday in a bid to quell the coronavirus pandemic.


Messi, the World's 2019 footballer of the year, made his own contribution after taking part in several campaigns to raise awareness over the past week, highlighting the importance of staying at home and washing hands to avoid the virus from spreading.
 
According to Catalan newspaper Mundo Deportivo, Messi’s donation totals €1million (£913k), with half the money going to another medical centre back in Argentina. The donation will allow both hospitals to buy more PPE and materials to cope with the huge number of patients who have been affected by coronavirus.

Prince Charles Tests Positive To Coronavirus


Prince Charles has tested positive for coronavirus.

Clarence House confirmed that the 71-year-old royal had been diagnosed with the COVID-19 disease in a statement released this morning.

The heir to the throne is said to have displayed "mild symptoms" but "otherwise remains in good health", and has been self-isolating in Scotland with the Duchess of Cornwall - who has tested negative for the coronavirus.

"The Prince of Wales has tested positive for coronavirus," the statement said.

"He has been displaying mild symptoms but otherwise remains in good health and has been working from home throughout the last few days as usual.

"The Duchess of Cornwall has also been tested but does not have the virus. In accordance with government and medical advice, the Prince and the Duchess are now self-isolating at home in Scotland.

"The tests were carried out by the NHS in Aberdeenshire where they met the criteria required for testing.

On Wednesday morning, it was announced that the Prince of Wales tested positive for coronavirus after he showed mild symptoms “but otherwise remains in good health”.
 
Following the news, an official spokesman has now confirmed that Joshua has not shown any signs of coronavirus and has spent this week self-isolating at home due to the government’s enforced lockdown.
 
“AJ is at home following government guidelines, he is fit and well,” a spokesman said. “He wishes everyone affected a speedy recovery and a huge thank you to all the front line key workers.”

67 Italian Catholic priests have died of coronavirus







A total of 67 Italian Catholic priests have died after being infected with the novel coronavirus.
 
The Avvenire newspaper revealed this on Wednesday, adding that the youngest of those listed by the Catholic Church-affiliated paper was 53.
 
"Priests get sick and die like everybody else, maybe even more than the rest," the Avvenire wrote.
 
The paper said 22 of the fatalities were in the Bergamo diocese, at the heart of the outbreak not far from the financial centre Milan.
 
Pope Francis asked priests "to have the courage to go out and see the sick" when the pandemic was gathering strength across the country on March 10.

Mali on lockdown after first two coronavirus cases







A nationwide curfew was announced on Wednesday March 25 by Malian President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, after the West African country reported its first two coronavirus cases same day. 
 
The two patients are Malian nationals, a 49 year-old woman from Bamako and a 62 year-old man living in Kayes. They arrived in the country from France on March 12 and 16, respectively. The government said the two patients were being taken care of by the country's health authorities.
 
In a televised address, Keita said the government will enforce a curfew between 21:00 to 05:00, from Thursday and close land borders to curb the spread of the virus. 
 
Freight will still be allowed into the country and markets will remain open. Keita further disclosed that amid the lockdown, a long-delayed parliamentary election whose first round is planned for Sunday will go ahead, although in "scrupulous respect" of health measures.

Clergyman in Pope’s residence infected with coronavirus






A clergyman who lives in the same residence as Pope Francis has been infected with coronavirus
 
The Italian was reported Thursday to have tested positive for COVID-19 and has been hospitalised.
 
Several Italian newspapers with reputable sources in the Vatican said the clergyman has lived for years in the Saint Martha’s guesthouse.
 
Il Messaggero said the person is "one of the pope’s closest collaborators, an official of the Secretariate of the State, who was found to have a slight temperature after going in for a routine check."
 
The daily La Stampa said the unnamed person has been hospitalised in Rome and that his office has been disinfected.
 
Pope Francis has remained largely secluded at his residence since coming down with a cold late last month.
 
The 83-year-old pontiff has a small apartment in the building and that's where his meals are taken. La Stampa said Pope Francis has been "eating alone in his room for some time" as a precaution.
 
He also has private meetings and occasionally moves to the Vatican library to record livestreamed messages to the world’s 1.3 billion Catholics.

13 die from COVID-19 at same New York hospital in one day







At least 13 patients have died from Covid-19 at the same hospital within 24 hours.
 
The deaths of the patients at Elmhurst Hospital in New York took place over the last 24 hours, a statement from a spokesman said, as one of the hardest hit states sees a surge in cases.
 
However, NYC Health and Hospitals/Elmhurst said in a statement that number is consistent with the number of Intensive Care Unit patients being treated there.
 
"Staff are doing everything in our power to save every person who contracts Covid-19," the statement said.
 
Elmhurst is at the center of the crisis, the statement said, and staff is working to overcome the overwhelming numbers.
 

 
"The frontline staff are going above and beyond in this crisis, and we continue surging supplies and personnel to this critical facility to keep pace with the crisis," the statement said.
 
"We are literally increasing the effective capacity of the hospital on a daily basis by sending more doctors, nurses, ventilators and PPE to meet demand."
 
The New York Times reported that some patients waiting for a bed at the 545-bed facility died in the emergency room, and a refrigerated truck sits outside to hold bodies.
 
"It's apocalyptic," Dr. Ashley Bray, 27, a general medicine resident told the Times.

Mexican governor, Miguel Barbosa claims the poor are immune to the coronavirus while the rich are at risk








A Mexican governor has made a controversial claim about the deadly coronavirus that is rapidly spreading all over the World. 
 
Miguel Barbosa, governor of the city of Puebla said poor people are immune to the coronavirus as he argued that majority of the country's cases are wealthy people.
 
The politician said: 'If you are rich, you are at risk. If you are poor, no... We poor people, we are immune.' 
 
But several scientists have criticized Mr. Barbosa over his claims, calling him an 'idiot' and saying his theory was 'incredibly stupid'.
 
Professor Paul Hunter, an infectious disease specialist at the University of East Anglia, criticised Mr. Barbosa’s claim.
 
He told MailOnline: ‘He is an idiot. That is absolutely stupid. There is no evidence for what he has said at all.
 
'What will happen is a lot of people will think they don’t need to worry about it [COVID-19], which will enhance the spread of the disease.'
 
He added that poorer people may be at more risk because they tend to be malnourished and be unable to afford high-quality medical care, in countries where there is no universal access.
 
'The vast majority of the times, these pandemics cause more harm in poorer people than they do in richer people.'
 
He also warned that only the rich live into their 70s in some of the world's poorest nations. 
 
Dr. Derek Gatherer, from Lancaster University, added: 'Nobody is immune (except those that have already recovered from it).'
 
'That's the problem with viruses that are entering humans for the first time'. COVID-19 had never been seen in humans until December.
 
Mexico has 475 cases of coronavirus and six deaths so far.

China bars entry of all foreign nationals to stop imported cases of coronavirus







Foreign nationals have been barred from entering China as a precautionary measure to curb the spread and return of coronavirus in the Asian country where coronavirus was first noticed in December 2019. 
 
In an announcement made on Thursday March 26 by Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the ban will be effected from Saturday March 28. There is currently no end date, though the agency said its measures will be "calibrated in light of the evolving situation and announced accordingly."
 
While non-citizens with residence permits and valid visa will be barred from entering the country, diplomats and those providing necessary economic, scientific or technological services or emergency humanitarian support are excluded from the restriction. 
 
Though China has reported fewer new cases in recent days, it has however recorded more "imported cases". There were 55 new cases across China on Thursday,  54 of them came from overseas.
 
The Chinese National Health Commission on Friday March 27, announced 81,340 confirmed cases and 3,292 death from the virus known as COVID-19.
 
The number of confirmed cases worldwide has now surpassed 511,000 while the death toll is higher than 23,000 with nearly 121,000 patients having recovered, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University in the U.S.

U.S overtakes China, Italy with most confirmed cases of coronavirus







The United States has overtaken China and Italy with most confirmed cases of coronavirus as over 85,500 Americans have tested positive for the virus. 


State-by-state figures published late on Thursday showed confirmed cases of coronavirus in the US had overtaken the 81,782 cases reported by China and 80,589 reported in Italy. The biggest outbreaks were confirmed in New York, New Jersey and California.
 
The US has recorded 1,300 coronavirus deaths, behind China with 3,291 and Italy with 8,215. 
 
When asked about the recently confirmed cases of coronavirus at a White House briefing on Thursday afternoon, President Trump said it was "a tribute to the amount of testing that we're doing".
 
Trump said; 
 

“Number one, you don't know what the numbers are in China. We are testing tremendous numbers of people.”

 
Vice-President Mike Pence also disclosed coronavirus tests were now available in all 50 states and more than 552,000 tests had been conducted nationwide.
 
The US President had set a much-criticised goal of Easter Sunday April 12, for reopening the country. This is coming after it was reported that over  3.3 million Americans lost their jobs because of coronavirus. 
 
Trump said;
 

"They [the American people] have to go back to work, our country has to go back, our country is based on that and I think it's going to happen pretty quickly.
"We may take sections of our country, we may take large sections of our country that aren't so seriously affected and we may do it that way.

"A lot of people misinterpret when I say go back - they're going to be practising as much as you can social distancing, and washing your hands and not shaking hands and all of the things we talked about."

US rapper, Scarface recounts his ordeal after testing positive for coronavirus







Geto Boys rapper, Scarface has shared his ordeal after testing positive for coronavirus which has halted activities in countries around the world. 
 
In a livestream with his bandmate Willie D on March 26, Scarface revealed that he had been sick for weeks, in-and-out of treatments but officially got his results on Wednesday night. 
 
The Houston native disclosed that the respiratory issues associated with coronavirus was brutal for him because he also has asthma. He said he could barely breathe and that it “felt like there was an elephant sitting on his chest.”
 
Scarface said; 
 

This whole three weeks has been an ordeal. It’s the craziest sh*t I’ve ever seen in my life. I’ve been to the point where I felt like I was gonna die. 
I threw up so much until it was like hot sauce, your gases and acids in your stomach is hot, I had no food in my stomach, it was just coming up like bile,’ he recalled. ‘I couldn’t breathe.
It started off with pneumonia in both of my lungs, three or four days later my kidneys fail, three or four days after they tell me I can’t move, I’m quarantined. They tell me I can’t go and see my kids. 

 
The rapper urged people to take the pandemic seriously, saying “I don’t see how nobody can even want to play them games, I don’t want to have fun that bad, where it could take my life.”
 
He further revealed that he is still in quarantine at his house, but believes he has finally recovered from the virus.
