Super Eagles player Kenneth Omeruo reveals why most young Nigerian players fail to fulfill their potential

Super Eagles defender, Kenneth Omeruo has revealed the reason most Nigerian football prospects don't make it when they leave Nigeria for Europe in search of greener pastures.

Omeruo joined Spanish club side Leganes permanently from Chelsea last summer after spending 7 years at Chelsea but not playing a competitive game for the London club.

Nigeria has won the FIFA U-17 World Cup five times but few stars from the tournaments have had a good career.

This season, the center back who can also play right back, has made 19 La Liga appearances for Leganes before the outbreak of the coronavirus and when asked why the likes of Rabiu Ibrahim (who was dubbed the new Jay-Jay Okocha) and Sani Emmanuel did not live up to expectations after moving to Europe, Omeruo said;
“I think one of the reasons, is bad decisions, as a young player you have to be ready and know that if you are not playing then the values go down,” Omeruo told Brila FM.
“One thing I have always done is playing, I always wanted to play. It does not matter where, either at the club or going on loan.
"If you are not playing then it’s difficult for the national team to invite you based on fitness level."

According to reports, Moise sent footage of himself partying at his Cheshire apartment to a private Snapchat group, a breach of the Government's and club's guidelines for the current pandemic.

According to The Mirror UK, several female guests gave lap dances and carried out other sexually suggestive acts'.
'' a witness described the party as 'absolutely wild west'. the report said

Reating to the lockdown violation, Everton released a statement condemning Kean's actions while saying they were 'appalled' and will be considering taking disciplinary actions against the 20-year-old, who earns £53,000 a week.

Everton's statement read: 'Everton Football Club was appalled to learn of an incident in which a first-team player ignored government guidance and club policy in relation to the coronavirus crisis.

'The club has strongly expressed its disappointment to the player and made it clear that such actions are completely unacceptable.

'Everton has regularly stressed the importance of following all the government guidelines - including rules and advice for inside and outside of the home - through a series of official communications to all staff members, including players.

'The amazing people in the NHS deserve the utmost respect for their hard work and sacrifice. The best way to show them respect is by doing everything we can to protect them.'

Quote:Ndidi Voted Leicester’s EPL Most Valuable Player This Season

Super Eagles midfielder Wilfred Ndidi has been voted Leicester City’s Most Valuable Player in the Premier League this season, Completesports.com reports.

This was announced on Sky Sports website after voting was concluded.

Following the suspension of football in England following the coronavirus outbreak, fans were asked to vote for their club’s Premier League MVP so far this campaign.

After the collation of votes, Sky Sports unveiled the MVPs for each of the 20 Premier League clubs.

Commenting on Ndidi’s performance for the Foxes this season, Sky Sports wrote: “Leicester lead the way for counterattacks this season, a hallmark of their game in recent years.

“The bedrock of their midfield and the key man in launching so many fast breaks is Wilfred Ndidi.

“The Nigerian is a master of the art of the turnover, regularly winning possession and springing attacks.

“His 4.4 tackles per 90 minutes is the highest in the Premier League this season and significantly higher than the next-best central midfielder, Oriol Romeu on 3.2.

“Ndidi’s value was further demonstrated by his recent injury absence – a five-game run that saw the previously high-flying Foxes take only two points from a possible 15.”

Prior to the suspension of football in England, Ndidi had 23 league appearances, scored two goals and one assist.

He had also helped Leicester into the Champions League spot as they currently occupy third position in the league table.

Meanwhile, voting by other club fans saw Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang emerge top at Arsenal, Kevin de Bruyne at Manchester City, Virgil van Dijk for Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur had Heung-Min Son, Harry Maguire for Manchester United and Willian for Chelsea.

Coronavirus: 8000 Borussia fans pay for cardboard cutouts of themselves to fill stadium if league returns behind closed doors (photos)

Fans of German club, Borussia Monchengladbach,  ave paid for more than 8,000 cardboard cutouts of themselves to fill their stadium if the Bundesliga returns behind closed doors due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

The German Football League (DFL) suspended Bundesliga football in March due to the coronavirus pandemic, that has infected close to 3 million people worldwide, but the Bundesliga says it now plans to restart on May 9 with players already returning to training.

Borussia Monchengladbach fans, have now thought of a unique way to fill up their stadium in case fans aren't allowed to enter the stadium by starting a ‘Stay at home. Be in the stands’ campaign.

As part of the campaign, Gladbach fans are able to buy cardboard cutouts of themselves for £16.50 to fill Borussia-Park, the club’s home stadium, if the remaining 2019/20 matches are played behind closed doors and profits from the sales of cutouts will go towards charity.

Borussia Monchengladbach’s fans  representative Thomas Weinmann said: “The campaign organisers are regularly overrun with orders.

“We can hardly keep up trying to install them, but we’re obviously delighted with the overwhelming response it has received.”

Juventus star, Paulo Dybala ‘tests positive for Coronavirus for fourth time in six weeks’

Paulo Dybala has reportedly still got Coronavirus, more than five weeks after he first tested positive.

The Juventus forward who was among the first Serie A players to contract Coronavirus alongside team-mates Daniele Rugani and Blaise Matuidi, has had a total of four tests in six weeks as a result of his initial diagnosis, with his most recent coming back positive.

Dybala had confirmed on March 21 that he and his girlfriend, Oriana Sabatini had contracted COVID-19 after his first positive test for the disease.

Though Spanish programme El Chiringuito stated Dybala has had four tests in the last six weeks, it is unclear if Sabatini has also been tested or if either of them are still displaying symptoms.

The couple however seem to be in great spirit. Dybala's Instagram story showed him working out in a home gym before doing a TikTok dance with his girlfriend, days after they welcomed dog Kaia to the family.

The Argentina international footballer had shared his experience with Coronavirus, which left him struggling to breathe. He said at that time;

Quote:"Luckily [we are] much better, these days we do not have any symptoms.

"I had stronger symptoms, I got tired very quickly, when I wanted to train, I was short of breath after five minutes. There we noticed that something was not right and through the tests the club did we were told that we were positive.

"From there we had more symptoms, such as cough, tired body and when we slept I felt very cold, but from the club they had told us that we were going to be fine so we had to be calm."

Serie A teams, including Juventus, are scheduled to return to training on Monday, May 4. Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said;

Quote:"Players would be able to undertake training individually from 4 May, in groups from 18 May, and then we'll evaluate if there are the conditions to allow the season to be completed.

"We need to complete all the discussions to ensure that if we do reach that stage, we'll do so in the utmost safety and security.

"We are passionate about sport and don't want our athletes to get sick.

"I'm passionate for football. Like many Italians, I initially found it strange that the championship could be interrupted or suspended but I think that even the most ardent fan understands that there wasn't an alternative."

Joseph Yobo denies condemning Alex Iwobi's role at Super Eagles

New Super Eagles Assistant coach, Joseph Yobo, has denied reports that he condemned Everton midfielder Alex Iwobi as an 'inconsistent' performer for the Super Eagles who needed to be replaced in the team going forward.

Yobo, a former Everton and Fenerbahce player, was appointed as an assistant to Super Eagles Head coach, Gernot Rohr a few months ago, replacing Imama Amakapabo after the expiration of his contract with the Nigeria Football Federation.

Reports on Monday morning suggested the Super Eagles legendary defender said in an Instagram live video interview with a journalist that the Super Eagles needed a new creative midifelder in the mould of Wilson Oruma and Jay Jay Okocha as Iwobi was too inconsistent.

But Yobo has now clarified the comments, saying he never called Iwobi 'inconsistent' but rather said he was 'unpredictable' after he was asked why the Super Eagles had not gotten a midfielder like Okocha and Oruma since they retired from the Super Eagles.

“This is what clearly happened during the live interview session on Instagram, the anchorman said since Austin Jayjay Okocha retired Nigeria hasn’t gotten a proper number 10. '' Yobo told Brila FM

''So, I addressed his questions by saying even when Okocha was playing we had Wilson Oruma because he (Oruma) was my teammate and John Mikel Obi has done well for the National team as number 10 and he did a great job before he retired,” said Yobo.

“I said, I think Alex Iwobi can be a replacement for the number 10 role. I watched him at 2019 AFCON and the anchorman said, Iwobi is a good player but he’s inconsistent and I said, he is unpredictable and I like him.

“I don’t know where he (the writer) got it all crossed out, he changed my words, I didn’t use the word inconsistent for Iwobi, the anchor mentioned that. I said he’s unpredictable and I like him, and his game his hard for midfielders and defenders to understand what he’s going to do,” he said.

It's not a matter of money, it's life or death'- FIFA medical chief tells English and German leagues to cancel the season like France and start again in August

FIFA's Chief Medic, Michael D'Hooghe, has warned against the dangers of the English and German leagues plan to restart football quickly amid the Coronavirus pandemic as Coronavirus lockdown restrictions are slowly being eased across Europe.

Michael D'Hooghe said football chiefs should see the Coronavirus crisis as a 'life and death' situation and postpone football till August as players spitting on the pitch could unleash deadly second wave of the virus.

His warning comes after France joined Holland and Belgium to cancel the remainder of the 2019-20  football season with no football until August but Germany's Bundesliga has revealed plans subject to approval from the federal government and state health authorities, to get going the season going on May 9. The Bundesliga is not alone in it's efforts to restart football as the Premier League is working towards trying to conclude the 2019-20 season in June and July.

D'Hooghe expressed concern that players on a football field would not be able to adhere to these rules fearing changing jerseys, showering together and spitting on the ground could spread the virus.

Speaking to The Daily Telegraph, D'Hooghe said: 'We are all subject to decisions at national level from the public authorities. It is very simple. Football suddenly becomes not the most important thing in life.

'I will be happy if we can start, in a convenient way, the next championship and have nothing before the start of next season.

'If they could start the season 2020-21 end of August or beginning of September I would be happy. Then they could eventually avoid a second attack from the virus, which is not impossible.

'Everyone has to be very careful for the moment. I have heard in many countries they are thinking about playing football again, with or without the public.

'In my long career I have seen many situations where there has been a balance between economic and health. Mostly the economics won, whether that was about jetlag or football at altitude or in extreme conditions such as pollution situations.

'If there is one circumstance where medical arguments should win against economical arguments, it is now. It is not a matter of money, it is a matter of life and death. It is very simple.'

Tottenham named Premier League's most valuable club ahead of Manchester City, Manchester United and Liverpool

London based football club, Tottenham, have been named as the most Valuable premier league team beating the likes of Manchester United, Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea.

According to an in-depth study by the University of Liverpool Management School, Tottenham beat their rivals to the gong due to their business model and low salary payments compared to the likes of United, City and Liverpool.

The north London club who haven't yet won a trophy have now been named the most valuable football team in England due to their monetary value.

According to University of Liverpool Management School football finance expert Kieran Maguire, Tottenham now have an overall club value of £2.567billion due to their 'highly regimented and generally low wage system, along with a highly commercial stadium with continuous earning potential. ''

Man City, 2018's table toppers with a value of £2.364bn, drop into second after seeing a decrease in value to the figure of £2.2bn while Manchester United previously second, have now dropped to  fourth.

Not surprisingly, Liverpool have risen to fourth with a total of £1.627bn in the most recent study ,

Maguire explains: 'Spurs are top of the valuation table because in 2018-19 they delivered a Champions League final and a top four Premier League finish on a wage budget that was £100-150m lower than the rest of the "Big Six".

'As such they made more profits, and this was reflected in the final valuation number.

'These factors led to a 21 per cent increase in income, to £461m for Spurs in 2018-19, against an unbelievably light 39 per cent player wage cost – the lowest ratio in the Premier League.

'By comparison, top four rivals Leicester City see 84 per cent of their income eaten up by player wages. Tottenham also only spent a net £22m on players – only Watford spent less (£21m) – where Chelsea spent net £290m, Liverpool £223m, Man Utd £135m and Man City £87m.'

COVID-19: Mourinho gives verdict on restarting Premier League season

 April 30, 2020

Tottenham Hotspur manager, Jose Mourinho, has said that finishing the 2019/2020 Premier League season would be good for everyone.

CP recalls that the Premier League is currently suspended indefinitely, with nine matches remaining due to the Coronavirus pandemic across the globe.

Mourinho, who was criticized earlier this month after he broke UK government-imposed COVID-19 lockdown rules by holding a training session with three of his players, is keen to get back to business again, but only if it is safe to do so behind closed doors.

“If we play the remaining nine matches this season, it will be good for every one of us,” Mourinho told Sky Sports.
“It will be good for football and the Premier League.

“If we play football behind closed doors, I would like to think that football is never behind closed doors. With cameras, it means that millions and millions are watching.

Juventus striker, Cristiano Ronaldo will be isolated for another two weeks when he returns to Italy from his home country, Portugal.

Recall Corriere dello Sport reported earlier this week that Juventus has recalled their foreign players who left Italy during the Coronavirus lockdown.

Ronaldo, who traveled to Portugal will be required to stay in isolation for another 14 days once he gets back to Italy.

In addition, Ronaldo's teammates, Douglas Costa and Alex Sandro, who both went to Brazil, are expected to return to Italy and will also be isolated.

This comes after it was claimed that Serie A clubs could return to training on May 4, but that may not include players who have returned from abroad.

Italy, the European country hardest hit by the coronavirus, has been in national lockdown since March 10. Over 200,000 cases of Coronavirus have been recorded with 27,682 deaths and 71,252 recoveries in the country.

How many footballers have to die?' - Gary Neville calls out Premier League for prioritising money over player safety amid Coronavirus pandemic

Premier league legend, Gary Neville, has called out the league's authorities over plans to restart football in June amid the Coronavirus pandemic that has killed thousands in Britain and killed close to 300,000 worldwide.

Football is currently at a halt worldwide due to the spread of coronavirus, while France, Belgium and Germany have cancelled their football seasons.

The proposed timeline for the premier league to return would see clubs back in full training by May 18, but Neville says that the financial aspect of football is leading towards hasty decisions of the game's return

According to Neville, league bosses are prioritizing making money over lives as Engalnd plans to join Germany and begin training .

"The FIFA medical officer said that football should not take place before September. I think if it was a non-economic decision there would be no football for months," Neville said on Sky Sports' The Football Show.

"People are now assessing risk. How many people have to die playing football in the Premier League before it becomes unpalatable? One? One player? One member of staff goes into intensive care? What risk do we have to take? The discussion is purely economic."

If clubs back in full training by May 18, matches will likely have to be played behind closed doors initially with players and staff undergoing extensive testing.

"There will be people who will view it as a risk factor," he added. "Players themselves will want to go and play. Players at the lower levels will want to go play and 1,400 players are out of contract. '' Neville continued

"Clubs have huge investment in this season. Think about what’s at stake for Leeds, it’s absolutely massive. There are big prizes up for grabs. There’s huge economic loss. It clouds people’s minds in terms of the risk that they’re willing to take.

"There are some players with conditions that could be more at risk of coronavirus than others and that is something that needs to be assessed.

"If health comes first, there is only one outcome at this moment in time. How many players have got asthma? How many players have diabetes? Have they assessed all of these things and are they willing to put those people at risk?

"If they are, we’ll all turn up and commentate on those matches. Fingers crossed, every day we’ll not have an incident which would be one of our players or a member of staff falling ill."

PSG set to be 'crowned champions of France' after Ligue 1 cancellation due to Coronavirus pandemic

Paris Saint-Germain are set to be named champions of France after the Ligue 1 top flight was brought to a premature end due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

This comes days after French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe announced that 2019-20 seasons would not be able to finish and that professional sport would not be returning to French life until September.

Speaking at a press conference, Philippe said: "The big sporting affairs cannot occur before September. The 2019/20 football season cannot return."

The announcement left a question on how the Ligue 1 season was going to be resolved with most teams having played 28 of their 38 games.

But the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) has made a decision to award the title for the 2019-20 campaign to PSG, as they currently lead with 12-points over Marseille with a game in hand, according to L’Equipe reporters.

It will be the PSG's ninth Ligue 1 title and third in a row.

Paris Saint-Germain alongside Marseille and Rennes are set to qualify for next season's Champions League, while Lille, Reims, and Nice will be awarded Europa League spots. It will all be decided at a later date.

Nimes, Amiens and Toulouse are currently in the bottom three with relegation to be decided at a later date.

Premier League to restart season on June 12 with games to be played at neutral grounds amid Coronavirus pandemic

The Premier League will return on June 12 with games to be played behind closed doors at neutral grounds, if the Government gives the green light amid the Coronavirus pandemic.

On Friday, a video conference meeting was held between the 20 “shareholder” Premier League clubs and they discussed the rules and regulations upon the return for training, as well as matches being played behind closed doors due to the global crisis.

According to The Sun, It was agreed at the meeting that matches will be held on neutral grounds away from congested urban areas as part of the league's 'Project Restart' plan to resume playing.

West Ham’s London Stadium including  Arsenal’s Emirates and the Etihad home of Manchester City are likely going to be the final venues where the games will be played.  But no club will be allowed to play in their own home ground.

Premier League clubs are already planning to start some form of formal training from May 18, with a target for the return of games to resume the season on June 12.

The clubs agreed to meet again next Friday, and present the plan to the government for approval.

Read the full statement below.

A league statement said: 'At a meeting of Premier League Shareholders today, clubs discussed possible steps towards planning to resume the 2019/20 season, when it is safe and appropriate to do so.

It was reiterated that the thoughts of all are with those directly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, the Premier League’s priority is the health and safety of players, coaches, managers, club staff, supporters and the wider community.

'The League and clubs are considering the first tentative moves forward and will only return to training and playing with Government guidance, under expert medical advice and after consultation with players and managers. The League welcomed the creation of the Government medical working group for a return of elite sport, which met for the first time this morning.

'No decisions were taken at today’s Shareholders’ meeting and clubs exchanged views on the information provided regarding Project Restart. It was agreed that the PFA, LMA, players and managers are key to this process and will be further consulted.'

I asked him if we had any problems' - Ikechukwu Uche opens up on his relationship with late Super Eagles coach, Stephen Keshi

Former Getafe and Villarreal striker, Ikechukwu Uche, has opened up about his relationship with late Nigerian coach, Stephen Keshi, stating that no problems existed between the pair until Keshi's death in 2016.
Uche, who spent most of his football career in Spain playing for teams like Recreativo, Getafe, Zaragoza, Villarreal, Granada and Málaga, lost his starting place in the squad to Emmanuel Emenike, playing just 151 minutes during the 2013 African Nations cup Nigeria won.

The 36-year-old forward had been a key member of the Super Eagles before Keshi's appointment and has now revealed four years after the Keshi's death that he had a meeting with Keshi to clarify issues regarding why the tactician didn't play him regularly.

It should be remembered that years back, Ikechukwu Uche had to deny allegations made by Keshi through the official super eagles twitter handle that Uche had insisted that he must be begged by the team before he can play for Nigeria again.

Uche denied the allegation, and said it will ''always be a honor to play for Nigeria'' if/when called upon.

Fast forward to 2020, and Uche has now revealed the true state of affairs during his time with the 'big boss' as Keshi was fondly called.

“I went to him and asked if we had any problems and he said there was none. I always gave my all for Nigeria whenever I pulled on the Eagles shirt,” Uche told Brila FM on Friday.

Uche also stated his time with the Super Eagles was over, as the young ones have taken over and praised on Super Eagles and Villareal winger, Samuel Chukwueze, as a big prospect who would shake the world.

Uche had 46 caps for Nigeria, scoring 19 goals for the Super Eagles.

Sven-Göran Eriksson Rejected Super Eagles Job: "I Was Asked To Split My Salary"

Sven-Goran Erikson, former England manager, has revealed why he turned down the opportunity to coach the Super Eagles of Nigeria at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

In an interview with Branschen.se, a Swedish website, Erikson said he rejected the offer after he was told by an official of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) that his salary would be paid into two different bank accounts.

According to the Swede, the NFF gave him a condition that his salary would be paid into his account and “another account that was not in my name.”

Erikson was contacted after late Shaibu Amodu was relived of his job as Eagles coach after the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The NFF also contacted Guus Hiddink, Glenn Hoddle, Arigo Sacchi, Giovanni Trapattoni, Eriksson and Louis van Gaal for the job 10 years ago.

“The only time I can remember having undergone any form that resembles an interview was when I was asked about the job of Nigeria’s national team coach in 2010 ahead of the World Cup in South Africa,” Erikson said.

“I went down in the belief that I would meet the chairman of the national team association (NFF) and that it was really only contract formalities that we would go through.

“But when I arrived, several coaches had received the same invitation, including Lars Lagerbäck. I was very surprised but found myself quiet quickly.

“After a while, I was called into the room with a chairman who declared that they wanted me as a coach, but with the proviso that my salary would be divided into two parts: one that I got into my account and another that would be deposited into another account that was not in my name.

“There I refused on the standing. I thought something didn’t go right. I’ve never applied for a job in my entire life.

“All my assignments have come about through the results I have achieved. I have never gone through any traditional job interviews, never sat down and conducted any tests or been analysed.”

Lars Lagerback was eventually appointed Eagles coach at that time.

'This is the strangest championship I have won' - PSG captain, Thiago Silva confirms his team has been crowned champions of France

Paris Saint-Germain captain, Thiago Silva has confirmed his team were crowned champions of France's Ligue 1 following the cancellation of the season due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) made a decision this week to award the title for the 2019-20 campaign to PSG, as they currently lead with 12-points over Marseille with a game in hand.

In a statement published via club's official website, the Brazilian defender admitted that he agrees with the decision to cancel the league because the important thing is the health of the players.

He said: 'The most important thing is the health of the players, and of everyone.

'If the championship had resumed, it may be that a fortnight or a month after the virus is back. This avoids worsening the situation. I believe the right decision has been made. It's a little weird for us. It is the strangest championship I have won, but we are going to celebrate it anyway because we deserve to win it. '

He also wrote via Instagram page: 'In unimaginable circumstances, this title remains a source of great pride.

'I can only thank God for being the champion for the seventh time in eight years in Ligue 1. I would not have come this far without the support of my family, in particular my beloved wife and children, my teammates, all staff and fans'.

He continued: 'I dedicate this title to all the doctors and healthcare staff who are fighting Covid-19 around the world. They are our players today, who are fighting so that we can return to the fields and stadiums as soon as possible. '

The club, meanwhile, also dedicated the win 'to caregivers and everyday heroes.'

Chelsea coach, Lampard sympathises with Kante

 May 2, 2020

Chelsea boss, Frank Lampard, has sympathised with midfielder, N’Golo Kante, whose four or five incredible seasons have had a damaging impact on his fitness.

Kante has featured in over thirty-three top-flight games in each of the past four years in England.

The 29-year-old has been one of the best midfielders in the world, winning two Premier League titles with Leicester City and Chelsea, and the FIFA World Cup with France in 2018.

“We had four or five of those [injured players] when we finished playing recently.
“N’Golo Kante is obviously a great example because he has played four or five incredible seasons in terms of his individual success, and he has been used quite rightly by his managers a lot.

“This season, he has played only about 40% of our games, and even then, it’s been difficult for him, and I have really felt for him on an individual level. He’s been a huge miss for us.

“Looking forward, whenever a restart comes, we want to get him in the best shape.”
Kante is currently on self-isolation after the Premier League was suspended indefinitely due to the spread of coronavirus across the world.

Coronavirus has not changed anything – Pogba
 May 4, 2020

Manchester United’s Paul Pogba has said the coronavirus pandemic has not changed his goals, ahead of a long-awaited return from injury.

Pobga has not played since he picked up a foot problem on Boxing Day.

The Frenchman has made only eight appearances this season and has been linked with a summer exit from Old Trafford.

However, Pogba insists he remains focused on returning to full fitness during the shutdown.

“We have got to stay motivated, there is no other choice. It is a period and we don’t know until when it will be like this, but I still have goals in my head and one day hopefully this [pandemic] will stop.

“And then we have to get back on the pitch, so we have to be ready. For myself, I have been out for a long time as well, so for me I just want to come back playing football,” Pogba told Ask Man Utd on the club’s official website.

The Premier League is still in discussions, to determine how best to restart games.
