LaLiga: Zidane reacts as Real Madrid beat Barcelona, go top of table

Real Madrid manager, Zinedine Zidane, has said they deserved their 2-0 victory over Barcelona on Sunday.
Vinicius Jr opened scoring in the second half, becoming the youngest player to find the back of the net in the El Clasico.
Mariano Diaz then climbed off the bench to make the points safe in stoppage time.
The win means Madrid are now top of LaLiga, one point ahead of Barca.
“We deserve the victory for everything we have done, the offensive and the defensive.
“It’s three important points after a complicated week, we had a chance to change that but it really doesn’t change anything, we have to go on and we’ll fight until the end,” Zidane told reporters after the match.

Real Madrid captain, Sergio Ramos, has hit back at Barcelona defender Gerard Pique, after the former Manchester United star claimed the Catalan club lost to the “worst Real Madrid he has faced at the Santiago Bernabeu”, following their 2-0 defeat on Sunday night in the La Liga El Clasico.
Real Madrid overtook Barcelona on the LaLiga table, after goals from Vinicius Junior and Mariano Diaz.
DAILY POST recalls that Pique, speaking to reporters after the game, said he was surprised at how poorly the hosts played during the first half.
Pique said: “Real Madrid in the first half was the worst Madrid I’ve faced at the Bernabeu.
“We missed a good chance to hurt Real MadridReal Madrid.
“We played better than them in the second half, though, we lost balls, and they grew in confidence.”
Reacting to the development, Ramos said he would gladly play the same way in every El Clasico if it meant beating Barcelona.
“Everyone’s opinion is respectable,” Ramos told reporters as quoted by Spanish publication AS.
“I signed up to win all Clasicos by making a first-half as bad as he says.
“The approach was different. In the first half, we left the ball, and in the second we decided to go.
“They were not so fresh, and we started to generate chances.”

FA Cup: Liverpool get double boost ahead of Chelsea clash

Liverpool has been handed an important double injury boost ahead of their FA Cup fifth-round clash with Chelsea on Tuesday night.
The Premier League leaders confirmed this in a post on their official website that defender, Joe Gomez, and midfielder James Milner, have returned to Liverpool’s first-team training at Melwood after recovering from injuries.
Gomez and Milner are now in contention to feature for the Reds against Frank Lampard’s men at Stamford Bridge.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Monday, Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp, said: “No news on new injuries, I think Joe and Millie are back.
“The others, Jordan Henderson (hamstring) and Xherdan Shaqiri (calf), aren’t.”
The match kick-off time is at 8:45 pm.

FA Cup: Chelsea suffer double injury blow after 2-0 win over Liverpool

Chelsea manager, Frank Lampard, has confirmed that both Willian and Mateo Kovacic, suffered Achilles’ injures during their 2-0 win over Liverpool in the FA Cup on Tuesday.
Willian, who opened scoring in the game, went down off the ball less than five minutes into the second half.
Kovacic had already gone off before the interval, after he was tripped slightly by Reds youngster, Neco Williams.
The Croatian midfielder initially carried on, but had to be helped from the pitch.
“Both have got an Achilles’ issue.
“Willian hopefully is not too bad, that is what he is reporting there so we will see how he is tomorrow. Kovacic’s feels slightly worse. Hopefully not too drastic, so we’ll see,” Lampard told reporters afterwards.

Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho defended Eric Dier after the England international stormed into the stands following his side’s FA Cup exit to Norwich on Wednesday.
Dier climbed over rows of seats to confront a fan, who had allegedly been involved in an altercation with the player’s brother.
The incident rounded off a terrible night for Tottenham, who saw another chance of silverware slip away 3-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw against the side bottom of the Premier League.
“When someone insults you and your family is there and your family gets involved with somebody who is insulting you, in this case a younger brother, I think Eric did what we professionals cannot do but, I repeat, probably every one of us would do,” said Mourinho.
“I am with the player and I understand the player.”
Dier scored his penalty in the shootout, but Erik Lamela, Troy Parrott, and Gedson Fernandes missed from the spot to condemn Spurs to a fourth straight defeat in all competitions.
On the prospect of the club taking disciplinary action against Dier, Mourinho added: “If the club does that I will not agree, but he did wrong.”
Jan Vertonghen headed Tottenham into an early lead, but Mourinho’s decision to hand 36-year-old goalkeeper Michel Vorm his first appearance of the season backfired.
The Dutchman spilt a long-range effort from Kenny McLean and Josip Drmic bundled home the rebound to level 12 minutes from time.
Both sides then tired badly in extra-time, but neither could find a winner and Mourinho again blamed his stretched resources without the injured Harry Kane and Son Heung-min to injury for defeat.
“Some of my players were really in trouble and they made an incredible effort to try,” said Mourinho.
“I don’t have one single negative feeling towards my players. I can cope with negative moments in football, but I feel really sorry for my players.”
Norwich will host Derby or Manchester United in their first quarter-final since 1992.

Manchester City will travel to Newcastle in the last eight after winning a 20th consecutive domestic cup tie 1-0 win at Sheffield Wednesday thanks to Sergio Aguero’s winner.

Brendan Rodgers’ men were again without Jamie Vardy through injury and needed right-back Ricardo to get the only goal when he headed home Marc Albrighton’s cross eight minutes from time.
“I thought it was just a matter of time,” said Rodgers, whose side will host Chelsea in the quarter-finals.
“In the second half we dominated — lots of quick combos and the goal was coming. It was an excellent display.”
Sheffield United will host Arsenal in the other quarter-final tie.

Tottenham Hotspur manager, Jose Mourinho, has blamed fatigue for his side’s elimination from the FA Cup.
Spurs were held to a 1-1 draw by Norwich for 120 minutes on Wednesday night, before losing out via spot-kicks.
It extends a run of defeats, which includes home losses to RB Leipzig and Wolverhampton Wanderers and away defeat to Chelsea.
With his main strikers Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min out because of injuries, Mourinho insists his squad is stretched.
“I am not going to say what everybody knows so this time I am not going to say that, but I have to say Steven Bergwijn, it’s too much for him to play so many minutes like he is doing,” Mourinho told reporters.
“I prefer to call Lucas Moura a hero, he is playing every minute of every game in every position.
“Harry Winks was completely dead. I think he’s started 11-12 games in a row, we had many many players in trouble.”
Mourinho will now prepare his team who are seventh in the Premier League for a trip to Burnley.
The North London side will then travel to Leipzig, looking to overturn a 1-0 defeat in their last 16 tie.

Derby County captain, Wayne Rooney, has warned his former club, Manchester United, that he will celebrate if he scores against them in tonight’s FA Cup fifth-round clash at the iPro Stadium.
The 34-year-old also said he would do everything possible to make sure that Derby defeated Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side and qualify for the quarter-final stage where they will take on Norwich City, who defeated Tottenham on Wednesday.
Derby County head to the game after defeating Sheffield Wednesday 3-1 in the Championship last weekend, while the Red Devils played a 1-1 draw with Everton in the Premier League.
“Yeah, of course, I will celebrate if I score against Manchester United,” Rooney was quoted by Mirror UK as saying.
“My time at Man United, I loved every minute of it.
“But I am a Derby player now, and I want to win with Derby.
“For that 90 minutes or 120 minutes, obviously I want Manchester United to lose.
“Everyone will understand I want Derby to win this game – and after that, I will go back to being a fan and wanting them to win again.”
The kick-off time for the game is 8:45 pm, Nigerian time.

But it was asking too much as United reached the quarters for the sixth year in a row.
Whatever happened here, it was always destined to centre around Rooney as the Derby player-coach faced United for only the seventh time in his career.
‘You’ve only come to see United,’ sang the away fans midway through the first half.
‘You’ve only come to see Wayne Rooney,’ countered the Derby supporters, and they had a point.
He has become a magnet for this Derby team since returning to English football in January, and there was even more attention on him last night.

At the age of 34, he looks every inch the senior figure with a thick beard and even thicker physique than when he left United in 2017. But the touch is still there. The passing, the vision and the tenacity, as Solskjaer pointed out in the build-up to this game.
Rooney started the first half by clattering Scott McTominay and ended it with a booking for chopping down Fred.
In between, he prompted and cajoled Derby and pinged a sumptuous 50-yard pass onto the toes of Jayden Bogle. But his big moment arrived in the 18th minute after Luke Shaw was cautioned for a bringing down Louie Sibley in full flight.
Rooney stood over the ball as expectation built around Pride Park. He curled his free kick over the United wall and for a moment it looked like it would creep inside the post. But Sergio Romero was equal to it, lunging to his right to claw the ball away.

Derby had certainly started brightly with Sibley flashing a shot wide of the other post after a good run. But could Phillip Cocu have been bolder with his team selection with Derby stuck in mid-table in the Championship? Probably.
The Dutchman made less changes than usual in the cup competitions this season but there were still four teenagers in his squad – Bogle, Sibley, Jason Knight and Max Bird – and just one of the back-four remaining from last weekend’s win over Sheffield Wednesday.
Derby knocked United out of the Carabao Cup at Old Trafford last season and you sensed there was an even better chance of an upset here.
More so because United were without their captain Harry Maguire who rolled his ankle in training on Wednesday and may now be a doubt for Sunday’s Manchester derby.
As it was, United settled after that slightly nervous start and were two goals ahead by half-time.

There was an element of good fortune about their first in the 33rd minute, moments after Derby’s No.2 keeper Kelle Roos had been forced into his first genuine save from Odion Ighalo.
Shaw broke down the left and slipped the ball inside for Jesse Lingard. His shot was blocked by Craig Forsyth and so was the follow-up effort from Bruno Fernandes.
Shaw made it third time lucky, though, as his shot into the turf reared up and appeared to brush Lingard’s back as it looped over Roos into the top corner.
It was the defender’s first goal in 19 months and he also helped set up United’s second four minutes before half-time after their penalty appeal for handball against George Evans had been turned down.

This time Shaw cut infield and guided a pass into the box for Ighalo. The Nigerian was up against Forsyth and Max Lowe but got the better of them both, breaking the tackles before beating Roos from close range.
Another fantastic Rooney pass to Bogle early in the second half gave the youngster a chance to cross into the box and he delivered. Martyn Wahorn met it on the penalty spot but glanced his header agonisingly wide of the far post.
Still, United were comfortable enough to take off Fernandes ahead of Sunday’s clash with Manchester City and they sealed victory with a third goal in the 66th minute.
A slick move ended with Juan Mata squaring the ball to Ighalo whose first effort was blocked by Bogle but the Nigerian hammered home at the second attempt for his third goal in three games.
There was still time for Rooney to test Romero again with another free kick that the keeper touched over the bar. ‘If Rooney scores, we’re on the pitch,’ sang the United fans, and they probably weren’t joking.

Former Manchester United defender, Rio Ferdinand, has admitted that Odion Ighalo has already proven him wrong at the club.
Ferdinand was speaking on BT Sport, as Ighalo netted twice in United’s 3-0 win over Derby County in the FA Cup fifth round.
A lot of questions were asked, when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer brought in the Nigerian striker on a six-month loan deal in January.
Most pundits felt Ighalo, who had previously played for Watford in the Premier League, was not up to standard for the Old Trafford outfit.
However, the 30-year-old now has three goals in just two starts for the Red Devils.
“People and myself included were probably thinking Odion Ighalo, where does he fit into all of this?
“If you have an opportunity to sign a player at the beginning of the January window, he is not the guy you are going to sign.
“But what he does bring is a point. Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial want the ball in behind and not to bring people in.
“To be there first is great considering the pressure he is under. He’s in the centre of goal and he’s a physical presence. That’s what he adds to this team,” Ferdinand said.

Former Nigeria captain, John Mikel Obi, has denied that Chelsea owner, Roman Abramovich, asked him to return to the club and take up a coaching role.
There were speculations that Mikel Obi had been approached, to either work in the Blues’ Academy or as an assistant in the first team.
It was believed to be Abramovich’s reward to a player who spent 11 years at Stamford Bridge.
But Mikel Obi, speaking with AOIFootball, described the rumours as “lies”.
He said: “Honestly, I do not know where such stories are emanating from. I’m surprised at the news because no such discussion or meetings have taken place between me and the club’s hierarchy as regards any form of coaching job.
“Chelsea will forever be like home to me and if such contact were made I would gladly make it known but for now they are all lies and rumours.”
Mikel Obi is expected to return to action this weekend for Trabzonspor after serving his suspension, following his red card against Caykur Rizespor.

The 2019 AFCON top scorer will hope to replicate his scoring form when United host Manchester City on Sunday in the Premier League.
Meanwhile former England head coach Steve McClaren, who was part of the United coaching staff when they won the treble in 1999, was confident that United had found the right number nine in Ighalo .
“Everybody needs a number nine. Everybody needs a target,” McClaren said on Sky Sports.
“There can be runners but there has to be a vocal point, Manchester United didn’t have that.
“Romelu Lukaku went, they’ve tried different things, false nine, it doesn’t work out, but I think with Ighalo it’s perfect because there’s lots of energy around him at the present moment and wouldn’t be surprised to see him play on Sunday.”

Tottenham Hotspur manager, Jose Mourinho, has said he “cannot keep giving Tanguy Ndombele opportunities”, following their 1-1 draw at Burnley on Saturday.
Mourinho took off the French midfielder at half time at Turf Moor.
Ndombele became Spurs most expensive player, following his £54m move from Lyon, but has failed to impress at White Hart Lane.
He started alongside Oliver Skipp, Ndombele only played for 45 minutes, before Mourinho decided he was not good enough.
“I hope that he (Ndombele) uses every minute on the pitch, and every minute knowing what the Premier League, is to improve. There are many fantastic players that in first seasons in new countries, for different reasons, struggle.
There are many examples.
“He’s a player with a great talent, and he has to know he has to do much better, and I cannot keep giving him opportunities to play because the team is more important than the players, and they must be on the pitch as a consequence of their work and performance,” Mourinho told Sky Sports after the game.
Ndombele has only made 12 starts in his first season in England.

Barcelona left-back, Jordi Alba, has lashed out at his own supporters for whistling the team, during their 1-0 victory over Real Sociedad on Saturday.
Lionel Messi netted the winner from the penalty spot in the 81st minute.
Alba had a goal ruled out for offside in stoppage time and had celebrated by cupping his ears to the fans.
He explained after the game, that he was not happy with the whistles aimed at his team-mates during the first half.
“No one likes to play poorly or how we’re playing at the moment, but I don’t like it when in the 15th minute with the score goalless there are whistles,” he told reporters.
“No one likes it when the fans go against you, especially in your own stadium. Our attitude is good and all the players are giving everything out on the pitch. I’m not going to hide. Just as I respect everyone, they also have to respect me.”
The win took Barca two points clear of Real Madrid, who play Real Betis on Sunday.
