UNFRIENDLY FRIENDS (II)
READ: Joshua 7: 1-12
MEMORISE:
Then the mariners were afraid; and every man cried out to his god, and threw the cargo that was in the ship into the sea, to lighten the load. But Jonah had gone down into the lowest parts of the ship, had lain down, and was fast asleep (Jonah 1:5).
EXPOSITION
“If everyone is your friend, then you are a fool”, says Albert Einstein. Proverbs 13:20 says, He who walks with wise men will be wise, But the companion of fools will be destroyed.
When Jonah was boarding the ship going to Tarshish (Jon. 1:3), the Bible does not record that he took along any luggage, whatsoever. Therefore, where did the mariners get the luggage and wares they cast into the sea from? Definitely, they were the luggage and wares of other passengers in the ship. It is very possible for some of them to have embarked on that particular trip as a business trip; returning from where they had just finished buying the goods they were going to sell at their various destinations. Some others must have bought other items for family and personal use, but all these goods and items were wasted, just by the presence of a destiny waster called Jonah, who himself had no single pin to lose in the ship.
There is a similar account of Achan in Joshua 7:1ff. In verse 1, But the children of Israel committed a trespass regarding the accursed things, for Achan the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zarah, of the tribe of Judah, took of the accursed things; so the anger of the Lord burned against the children of Israel. Now, only Achan stole the items, but the Lord was angry with the whole nation of Israel.
Furthermore, Joshua 7:5a says, And the men of Ai struck down about thirty-six men. What a terrible disaster, losing about 36 men in just one day, just because of the foolishness and greediness of a man who chose to disobey God, single-handedly bringing calamity upon the whole nation.
Some people have associated with Jonah and Achan as friends, married them as husbands or wives, business partners, etc., thereby losing great visions, fortunes, spiritually, materially, morally, physically, financially, socially and even economically. Jonah and Achan are both wasters of destinies. They have little, or nothing to lose but can make one lose everything. May God keep us from them.
PRAYER POINTS
1. Lord, restore unto me what unfriendly friends have made me lose in the past.
2. Lord, cast away all purpose destroyers from my life.
3. Lord, let all the glory I have lost through wrong company return to my life today, in Jesus’ name.
EXTRA READING FOR TODAY: 2 Chronicles 14:15 – 18:10; Acts 6:4 – 7:10.
