EPL: Klopp signs new contract with Liverpool, gives reason

 December 13, 2019

Liverpool have confirmed that their manager, Jurgen Klopp, has signed a new contract extension that will keep him at Anfield until 2024.

The UEFA Champions League holders made this known in a statement on their official website on Friday.

The statement read: “Liverpool Football Club are delighted to announce Jürgen Klopp has agreed a contract extension with the club.

“The manager will extend his Reds tenure until 2024, ensuring he will remain at the helm for a further four-and-a-half years.

Assistant managers Peter Krawietz and Pepijn Lijnders have also agreed deals to continue working collaboratively alongside Klopp.

“The deal comes after four hugely successful years in charge of Liverpool for the 52-year-old and will ensure the long-term foundations for the team’s – and indeed club’s – development will continue well into the next decade.”
Klopp, speaking on why he signed a new deal, told the club’s official website: “For me personally this is a statement of intent, one which is built on my knowledge of what we as a partnership have achieved so far and what is still there for us to achieve.

“When I see the development of the club and the collaborative work that continues to take place, I feel my contribution can only grow.

“People see what happens on the pitch as a measure of our progress and although it is the best measure, it’s not the only measure. I have seen the commitment from ownership through to every aspect and function of the club you can think of.

“When the call came in autumn 2015, I felt we were perfect for each other; if anything, now I feel I underestimated that. It is only with a total belief that the collaboration remains totally complementary on both sides that I am able to make this commitment to 2024.”

Messi & Ronaldo Lead FIFA 20 TOTY Nominations

Manchester City and Liverpool account for 17 of the 55 players on the FIFA TOTY shortlist. Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo made the cut.

Liverpool lead the way with 10 nominations for the EA Sports FIFA Team of the Year.

FIFA players will take part in a fan vote to select their best XI from 2019 and there are almost a full team of Liverpool stars to choose from among the 55-man shortlist.

Goalkeeper Alisson is joined by full-backs Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson, along with Ballon d'Or runner-up Virgil van Dijk. Klopp's first-choice midfield trio of Fabinho, Georginio Wijnaldum and captain Jordan Henderson are joined by formidable from three Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.

It is a tale of dominance for the Premier League's top two in 2018-19 as England's domestic treble-winners Manchester City are represented by seven players – Ederson, Aymeric Laporte, Kevin De Bruyne, David Silva, Bernardo Silva, Raheem Sterling and Sergio Aguero.

Neymar, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are all present, but there is no place for the latter's Barcelona team-mate Antoine Griezmann or Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba.

Neymar is joined by four of his Paris Saint-Germain team-mates, while Borussia Dortmund surprisingly outstrip Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich. BVB trio Jadon Sancho, Marco Reus and Mats Hummels are in the mix along with Robert Lewandowski and Joshua Kimmich.

Andre Onana, Nicolas Tagliafico, Hakim Ziyech and Dusan Tadic make up the Ajax contingent, while the now departed De Jong and De Ligt were, of course, a key factor in their domestic double and progress to the semi-finals of Europe's top competition.

De Ligt and Ronaldo are the Juventus nominees alongside Paulo Dybala, Alex Sandro and Leonardo Bonucci.

Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola has cancelled Christmas for his first-team stars, as they have all been banned from attending the club’s festive party.

According to Goal, Guardiola is keen to avoid another festive slump, like the one which threatened to derail their treble hopes last year. After last year’s celebrations, Manchester City were surprisingly beaten 3-2 at home to Crystal Palace and then lost to Leicester four days later.

They eventually recovered to successfully defend their Premier League title. And with City currently 14 points behind league leaders Liverpool, Guardiola has taken action to avoid a similar slump by banning players from this year’s bash.

PSG striker, Neymar is taking his former club, Barcelona to court for £2.9m in unpaid wages from his previous four-year stay at the Spanish club.

The 27-year-old Brazilian footballer who signed for Barcelona in 2013 from Brazilian club Santos has accused Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu of acting with 'absolute bad faith' since he joined the Ligue 1 champions for a world-record £198m fee in 2017.

According to Spanish outlet El Mundo, Neymar now believes he is owed £2.9m (€3.5m) in unpaid wages in addition to the £36.2m (€43.6m) he thinks he is owed via a renewal bonus.

The report also details that Barcelona believe they are owed money from selling Neymar, ''due to the first part of a renewal bonus, alongside £7m (€8.5m) in damages and interest.''

In an interview with Cadena Ser, Neymar Santos Sr, who serves as an agent to his son, said that the action was part of the original suit and expressed optimism that everything would be settled amicably.
“It’s a demand about his termination when he left the club,” Neymar’s father said, adding that ''Neither Barcelona nor us are worried. We will solve this situation.”

With the current court battle, It's now unclear if Neymar will return to Barcelona despite rumors in the summer linking him with a return to the Nou Camp.

 December 14, 2019

Chelsea are currently in fourth position on the Premier League table with 29 points from 16 games, while Man United are in fifth place with 26 points from the same number of games.

Writing in his column for Sky Sports, Merson said: “Can Manchester United catch Chelsea in fourth? 100 per cent! There’s a long way to go.
“Chelsea are a young side and are going to have their ups and downs.
“Spurs aren’t going to be far away either now Jose Mourinho has been appointed.

“You’ve got Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham, Manchester United, four big football clubs, vying for what looks to be one spot in the top four.”

EPL: Charlie Nicholas predicts scorelines between Arsenal vs Man City, Chelsea vs Bournemouth, others

 December 14, 2019

[Image: C9D89F6F-1C85-4F6D-9F14-01AF44F84AA0.jpeg]

Former Arsenal star, Charlie Nicholas, has predicted the scorelines of some of the Premier League Match day 17 fixtures.
Chelsea will battle Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening following a 2-1 victory over Lille in the Champion League on Tuesday.

Manchester United will tackle Everton on Saturday, while Arsenal will host Premier League champions, Manchester City at the Emirates Stadium.
Speaking with Sky Sports, Nicholas gave his predictions thus;
Chelsea vs Bournemouth: “This scoreline is going to be unpredictable to work out. This is where Jeff Stelling will be sitting smug for his £250,000. Bournemouth don’t score goals now – they are better defensively but are not getting the points. Chelsea got through to the knockout stages of the Champions League so they will be full of confidence

“Willian has been different class as much as the youngsters have excelled. I do see a comfortable Chelsea win. I don’t know how Bournemouth will park up in this one. They used to come and play but I don’t think they will do that, so this is a hard one to call. Chelsea 3, Bournemouth 1.”
Manchester United vs Everton: “This is a proper Sunday. It was great to see ‘Big Dunc’ with his wholehearted honesty when Everton scored their third.
“Everton do not know what style they want as they have had such a variety of managers. Are Manchester United turning the corner? It certainly looked that way against Manchester City and they could be on course for the top four now. Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial looked brilliant, while Scott McTominay’s aggression was good once again.

“United do gives the ball away cheaply and I am unconvinced about them for the top four. They will continue to grind it away and they will get another promising and positive result here. Man United 3, Everton 1.”
Arsenal vs Manchester City: “We can guarantee goals in this one. I am going to go for a high scoreline here. Man City posted an emphatic win midweek but have major problems at the back. The Arsenal strikers looked as though they were more up for it and are scoring. Bukayo Saka played his part in the draw at Standard Liege, as did Gabriel Martinelli off the bench – we have some real promising youngsters. These are the games that they haven’t got a result in and I am not expecting one here.
“Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang sometimes do not turn up in these games, if they get picked that is. I really have sympathy for Bernd Leno. He is a top-class goalkeeper but he will make mistakes as all goalkeepers do. He is playing behind a defence who do not protect him. There will be loads of goals in this. Arsenal 2, Man City 4.”

Arsenal vs Man City: Ljungberg makes fresh demand from Gunners’ board

 December 14, 2019

[Image: FILE-PHOTO-Premier-League-Norwich-City-v-Arsenal.jpeg]
Arsenal’s interim manager, Freddie Ljunberg, has asked the board for help as he continues to take charge of the team.

Ljunberg feels he doesn’t have enough support in the dugout, having brought in Per Mertesacker from the club’s academy.

The Swede, speaking ahead of Sunday’s game against Manchester City, pointed to the number of assistants Unai Emery had, before he was sacked last month.

“If you look at the person who was here before, he had a lot of staff.

“I don’t have many staff. If you keep on going like that for months and months, it’s not easy. But that’s totally up to the club.

“The club have said I have to wait until they make a decision, so I can’t do anything. I have Per Mertesacker, but he is the academy manager helping me with the coaching,” Ljunberg said.

EPL: Rashford speaks on being compared with Cristiano Ronaldo

 December 14, 2019

Manchester United striker, Marcus Rashford, has played down Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s comparison of him and Cristiano Ronaldo, insisting he still has a long way to go to match the Portugal superstar.

Solskjaer said it was “easy” to compare Rashford and Ronaldo, after the England international scored his 13th goal in his last 14 games, in the 2-1 win over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

Rashford has also reached 50 United goals in fewer games than Ronaldo.
“As a forward player ever since I’ve come through, they always compare you with forwards that have been in the past and it’s something that you don’t really have much of an input on.

“All you do is try to do your best on the pitch and then people outside do the talking about it.

“It’s just a thing people like to do with forwards so it’s obviously nice, definitely a compliment. I understand how far I’ve got left to go to reach the heights they reached so I am very clear-minded and just focused on myself,” Rashford said according to ESPN.

The UFC 245 main event saw Nigerian born, welterweight champion Kamaru Usman (16-1-0) retain his title in an eagerly-anticipated fight with Colby Covington (15-2-0), who was previously the interim champion of the division.

The 'Nigerian Nightmare' stopped Covington in the final round after multiple knockdowns, in a contest that saw the two elite wrestlers strike throughout.

Usman outboxed Covington on the feet for nearly five rounds of an epic two-way duel before finishing him via fifth-round TKO to defend his 170-pound title at UFC 245. Quote:"This one is not just for me but for the whole entire world right now. I heard all week, all month since the fight got signed that Colby was in my head and this or that. I'm telling you right now the reason I'm the best in the world is because my mind is stronger than anyone in the division" Usman said. after the fight.
Elsewhere on the card, Max Holloway (21-5-0) lost his featherweight title to Alexander Volkanovski (21-1-0) of Australia and women's bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes (19-4-0) beat Germaine de Randamie (9-4-0) for the second time to retain her belt.

EPL: Norwich manager, Farke attacks Kelechi Iheanacho after Leicester’s 1-1 draw

 December 15, 2019

[Image: kelechi-iheanacho_1g4fsiye5x3511p4bgtormp9ds.jpg]

Norwich City manager, Daniel Farke, has expressed his anger over Kelechi Iheanacho’s poor sportsmanship during Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Leicester City.
With Norwich player on the floor injured, Iheanacho decided to attack rather than sportsmanly play the ball out for throwing.

In the first half of the 1-1 draw, Norwich knocked the ball out of play so Emiliano Buendia could receive treatment.

They expected to receive the ball back, but the Nigerian international chose to play on, and, after he was tripped, the angered Norwich players stormed to confront him. Todd Cantwell was then punished with a yellow card.

Norwich did eventually receive the ball back with James Maddison deliberately passing the free-kick wide.

“I’m usually quite calm, but in this situation my pulse was at 200 and I was also furious,” Farke told reporters after the game.

“It started with a situation, a tackle against Emi Buendia, I couldn’t understand why the free-kick wasn’t given. When this happened to Leicester players, he blew his whistle and he was right to do this.

“Leicester played on. Sometimes in the heat of the game, perhaps you don’t realise there is someone on the floor.

“We won the ball back and played the ball over the line in order to allow some treatment.

“It’s quite common in the whole world that there is fair play and the throw-in goes back to us. I think everybody in the stadium expected this.

“We were not organised. [Iheanacho] was willing to use this situation not to play the ball but surprisingly to try to score a goal.

“Out of this there was a free-kick given in an unbelievably dangerous area and there was a check of a red card of my player. It was strange. I can’t explain why it was a free-kick and a yellow card for my winger, because then you are always in danger.

“Thank God the outcome was just a yellow card. We can live with it, it could have been worse, that’s for sure.”

Arsenal hero, Paul Merson has blamed Chelsea manager, Frank Lampard following the Blues’ Premier League 1-0 defeat to Bournemouth at the Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Merson felt Lampard got his tactics wrong against Bournemouth, adding that the Chelsea manager would have ‘swallowed the pill and settle for a draw’ against the visitors.

Bournemouth scored a VAR-awarded goal in the 84th minute through Dan Gosling and held on with relative comfort to end a run of five consecutive defeats.

Chelsea have now lost four of their past five Premier League games.
“With Frank, it’s not a good day at the office for him. It was 0-0 and sometimes you have to swallow the pill and settle for a draw,” Merson told Sky Sports.

“He takes off Jorginho and brings on Hudson-Odoi and Batshuayi. Tammy Abraham was already on so he has all these forwards on, everyone is bumping into each other
“I think Chelsea will need to go into the market next month. This is a crisis now. If other results go the wrong way for them, their lead [over the top-four] could be down to two points.

“They’ve got Tottenham away next. It’s hard for them now. I think they have to go in the market. This squad, for me, doesn’t get into the top four.”

He added: “Bournemouth definitely didn’t deserve to lose but they didn’t dominate Chelsea.

“I watch Chelsea a lot and if you can get through the first 20 minutes against them, their confidence seems to go.
“They’ve got a lot of young players and they are easy to play against sometimes. The pitch looks so small for the way they want to play, it just looks too easy to defend against.

Chelsea manager, Frank Lampard has given reasons his side lost 1-0 to Bournemouth on Saturday.
The former England captain said he always anticipated a dip in form by his young team.

Chelsea have now lost four of their past five Premier League games following the 1-0 home defeat.

Bournemouth scored a VAR-awarded goal in the 84th minute and held on with relative comfort to end a run of five consecutive defeats.

The former midfielder said he was always guarded against getting too carried away as their early season-form took them as high as second in the table.

“Now we have the reality,” Lampard added

“If we are not at our best and haven’t got enough to break teams down that are organised. If players, with their individual quality and personality cannot break teams down then we have to find another way. That’s the test.

“Forget Man City game [2-1 loss]; we played well and lost. But against West Ham, who were organised and wanted to stop us playing, against Everton, organised and wanted to stop us playing, and Bournemouth, particularly organised and deep and wanted to stop us playing, we have to find another way – and we haven’t managed to do that.

“That brings nerves and stress in the stadium and in the team and we haven’t dealt with that.”
He said the Blues need “urgency” in their play.

“If you are transferring the ball, do it quickly from side to side. If you are playing through the lines, get it through the lines.

“And if you are an attacking player, get at people and do things that are positive and don’t play play safe. We played too safe through the game.”

Tottenham boss, Jose Mourinho has warned defender, Serge Aurier over mocking his previous managers.
The Portuguese has won three games out of four for Tottenham in the Premier League since taking over.

The Ivory Coast international has been caught up in controversy in the past, over comments made on social media about ex-boss Laurent Blanc during his time at PSG.

The former PSG star was suspended by the club over the altercation, after making homophobic slurs towards Blanc via a video message, as well as to several teammates, including Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Foot Mercato quoted Mourinho as saying about Aurier, “I am not laughing. If you think that you can mock me on social media like you’ve done to some of your former managers in the past, you are mistaken.”
