Barcelona striker, Lionel Messi has won his sixth Ballon d’Or, breaking a tie for most ever with his arch-rival Cristiano Ronaldo.

The 32-year-old beat Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk and Juventus’ Cristiano Ronaldo to win the award at a ceremony which took place in Paris on Monday night, Dec. 2nd.

Messi has now become the first ever player to win the award on six occasions, having been tied with Ronaldo on five. The Argentine and the Portuguese superstars dominated the Ballon d’Or for a decade between 2008 and 2017.

Although their duopoly was broken last year when Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric claimed the prestigious prize.

Cristiano Ronaldo crowned Serie A player of the year

Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo was named the Italian league’s player of the year at an awards ceremony in Milan on Monday night.

Ronaldo was at the Gran Gala del Calcio in Milan to collect his prize, instead of attending the Ballon d’Or ceremony in Paris where he was third in the voting for best player in the world which Messi won.

According to reports, the Portugal international turned up about an hour before the main award was announced, arriving more than two hours after the other guests, and waited outside in the car until the moment came for him to go on stage to pick up the prize for his place in the team of the season.
“It’s an honor to hold this award,” Ronaldo said in Italian. “I thank my Juventus teammates.
“I’m very happy to play in Italy, it’s a very difficult league. Thanks to everyone for having voted for me. I want to do as well this year, too.”

Ronaldo also took to Instagram hours ago to thank everyone that voted for him, adding that switching to the Italian league from La liga has been difficult but he's happy and wants to be better.

The Portugal international scored 26 goals in his debut season in Italy and helped Juventus towards another domestic title. In the league, he scored 21 times in 31 appearances, finishing fourth in the top-scoring charts, with veteran striker Fabio Quagliarella of Sampdoria collecting the golden boot award.

A jury comprising of fellow Serie A players, coaches, referees, journalists, and current and former technical commissioners all agreed that Ronaldo was the league’s best last season.

Juventus’ quest to win the league yet again isn't going well however, with Inter Milan currently a point above them at the summit of the table.

Ronaldo has managed six goals in his 11 Serie A appearances this term and will be expected to help his side secure another league title.

Arsenal: Freddie Ljungberg should not get manager's job on long-term basis - Chris Sutton

[*]

Freddie Ljungberg played 328 times for Arsenal in a nine-year spell at the club, helping them win the Premier League twice and the FA Cup three times
Freddie Ljungberg is not the right man to manage Arsenal on a long-term basis, said former Blackburn striker Chris Sutton.
Ex-Gunners midfielder Ljungberg, 42, is in interim charge of the club after they sacked Unai Emery last month.
"Freddie said he was 100% sure they would get into the top four but based on what? It's fantasy," said Sutton on BBC Radio 5 Live's Monday Night Club.
"They need to get someone in place that they are going to get a reaction from."
Ljungberg, who played for Arsenal between 1998 and 2007, had been Emery's assistant after working with their under-23 side but has no previous managerial experience.
In his only game in charge so far, the Gunners twice fell behind to a Norwich City side in the bottom three before Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang twice equalised in a 2-2 draw.
That result left Arsenal eighth in the Premier League, 21 points behind leaders Liverpool and seven behind fourth-placed Chelsea.

Norwich 2-2 Arsenal: Freddie Ljungberg says first few days have been steep learning curve
"Did you expect them to be much different?" added Sutton, a Premier League title winner with Blackburn in 1994-95. "It has been the same for the last decade and it's still the same problem.
"They need to change the model, the recruitment. Over the summer they brought in [winger] Nicolas Pepe [for £72m] but the issues were at the back."
Former Aston Villa and Chelsea midfielder Andy Townsend agreed with Sutton and said: "I don't think it's the right time for Freddie to take over, not the right time for someone who is inexperienced at this level.
"Arsenal need someone to come in and teach them about defending.
"Calum Chambers has been around long enough to see if there's been an improvement but there hasn't been. I don't think he's good enough to be an Arsenal regular.
"Sokratis is nowhere near good enough. I don't think he would get into any Premier League side."

'If you rely on Sokratis you will be changing manager every six months'

Arsenal have conceded 21 goals in 12 Premier League matches - no side in the top 12 has conceded more
Emery's sacking by Arsenal came 10 days after Tottenham dismissed Mauricio Pochettino, although Spurs acted decisively by bringing in Jose Mourinho the next day.
"At Tottenham they sacked the manager, it was a bit harsh but the time had come, and they had a manager six hours later, that's how Arsenal should've done it," said former Liverpool midfielder Charlie Adam.
"Whoever comes in, it's a short-term fix and in January he will need two centre-halves but there's no money."
Townsend added: "Jose Mourinho, when he looked at the Spurs team and the players he was working with, he has Son Heung-min, Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Lucas Moura and thought 'we have half a chance'.
"With Arsenal you will think 'I can win games with these players but I've got to sort out a team'. You will never stop Sokratis making mistakes. If you rely on him you will be changing manager every six months."

Rodgers the 'perfect fit' for Arsenal - Adam
On Monday, Brendan Rodgers, manager of second-placed Leicester, dismissed speculation linking him with the Arsenal job, although on Sunday he had revealed there was a release clause in his Foxes contract.
"If Arsenal make the phone call and offer whatever that buy-out clause is, £15-£20m, that's nothing to Arsenal. That sort of money they should find in a heartbeat," added Townsend.
"They would spend it on a player and throw it away in 10 games. They spent £72m on Pepe and he does not get a game. To spend £25m on Brendan Rodgers, if he is the one they want then why wait?
"We've all enjoyed the Leicester story. It has been one of incredible highs and they are a great watch but they're not on the same level globally as Arsenal are - to be back at Arsenal would be him back up among the elite."

Why would I want to leave Leicester? - Brendan Rodgers
Adam described Rodgers as "the perfect fit" for Arsenal but doubted whether it would be the best decision from the former Liverpool and Celtic boss to leave Leicester for Arsenal.
"I don't think it would be a good move for Rodgers," said Adam. "At Leicester you have a new £100m training ground, four or five players at the top of their game - players like Youri Tielemans, Jamie Vardy, James Maddison.
"I would want my manager to say 'I'm not interested in any other job'. If you don't want to get it out there you don't admit you have a buy-out clause. I think he wants the job."
What about the other contenders?
Townsend believes Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo, who won the Championship in 2017-18 and guided them to seventh in the Premier League last season, is the right man at Emirates Stadium.
"When I see the job he's done at Wolves, getting them promoted, making them a seriously good team to watch, Nuno would be great," said Townsend.
"He looks like a coach who wants to get into a player's head and turn them around and some of the Arsenal players need that."
[img=605x339]data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7[/img]
Nuno Espirito Santo's Wolves are currently sixth in the Premier League and drew 1-1 away at Arsenal in November
Townsend also mentioned former Liverpool, Chelsea and Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez as another strong contender, but did not think Pochettino would move and join Tottenham's fiercest rivals after more than five years in charge of Spurs.
"I wonder what the Arsenal fans would think of Benitez," added Townsend. "He has been successful and managed at big clubs and has a history of trying to organise a team - and Arsenal need that.
"It's too early for Mauricio Pochettino, he needs a breather instead of bouncing out of one job and into another.
"He was gone at the end.

Aston Villa Target January Loan Move For Iheanacho

[/url] [url=https://www.completesports.com/aston-villa-targets-january-loan-move-for-iheanacho/#comments]

Aston Villa are reportedly interested in signing Leicester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho on loan in the January transfer window.
While Dean Smith is unlikely to spend in the new year after spending a lot in the summer, the Villa boss is thought to want to add quality and depth to his squad for the second half of the season.

The West Midlands club currently only have Jonathan Kodjia and Keinan Davis as backup options to main striker Wesley, with the former consistently linked with a move abroad and the latter injured.

The Birmingham Mail reports that Villa are eyeing up Iheanacho, who registered an assist and scored a late winner for Brendan Rodgers’ side on Sunday in his first Premier League appearance of the season.
The 23-year-old Nigerian has scored 13 goals in 66 games for the Foxes since joining them from Manchester City in 2017, although most of his minutes have come from the bench.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s sister calls out Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk over his joke about the Juventus striker at Ballon d’Or awards

Katia Aveiro, the sister of Cristiano Ronaldo has put Liverpool's defender Virgil van Dijk on blast over his joke about the Juventus striker at the Ballon d’Or awards on Monday night..

Ronaldo failed to show up for the ceremony in Paris and instead attended the 2019 Gran Gala del Calcio gala in Milan to collect his ‘Best Player in Serie A’ award.

When Van Dijk was being interviewed by Dutch television station RTL7 before the Ballon d’Or gala, the interviewer pointed out to Van Dijk that Ronaldo’s absence meant that he had one less rival to contend with for the Ballon d’Or award and the Liverpool defender replied: ‘Was he a rival then?’

Well, this didn't go down well for Ronaldo's sister Katia, who has now slammed Van Dijk in a lengthy rant on Instagram.

Quote:‘I think there are people living completely frustrated !!! And unrealistic… such humility!’ Katia wrote.

‘It is well known that Ronaldo will not win tonight’s prize. Although I have won important collective titles … but this is another conversation and that up ahead we will see where the truth about football will come !!!

‘Now, dear Virgil, where you are going, Cristiano Ronaldo has gone and has come a thousand times.

‘You see, my dear Virgil, that Cristiano Ronaldo was a tri-champion in the country where you have been playing for years and you still haven’t got your hand in the can.

‘Cristiano Ronaldo was even the best player and best scorer in the country where you play Virgil. By the way, I was even younger than you.

Then, dear Virgil, Cristiano Ronaldo went to other places and became the greatest player in the history of a clubezito.

‘Real Madrid, tell you something Virgil? Maybe so, because this club, with this Cristiano guy, even beat you in the Champions League final. Of these, Ronaldo already has five, Virgil.

And that fellow Ronaldo and team-mates, with the corners on his chest, crushed your “orange” in a final. Was it hard, Virgil? We have pity. And, dear Virgil, In one of the least successful times of his career, Cristiano Ronaldo has won even more titles than you. Awesome, isn’t it?

‘Now Virgil will win titles from those who really count and then we’ll talk. When you have a handful of them, the really important ones, you might be able to sit at the table with Cristiano. Or as they say in our land, it grows and appears!
‘It’s for me Cristiano you are and you will always be the best player in the world !!! And who does not like to put it on the wheel of the plate !!! (as they say in our land, small for many) but where came the best ever.’

Van Dijk finished second behind Lionel Messi as the Barcelona forward won the sixth Ballon d’Or trophy of his career to break ties with Ronaldo, who finished third in the rankings.

On Monday night, Didier Drogba fulfilled a 10-year debt to Kylian Mbappe by taking a selfie with the French football star at the 2019 Ballon d'Or awards.

The Chelsea legend revealed that he denied a then 10-year-old Mbappe a picture after a Champions League semi-final with Barcelona in 2009,  because he wasn't happy by the poor officiating of referee Tom Henning Ovrebo after Barcelona knocked out Chelsea.

At the ceremony last night, Drogba, who hosted the ceremony alongside Sandy Heribert invited the PSG striker to the Ballon d'Or stage to fulfill his '10-year debt' to the French star.

He said on stage: 'Ten years ago after a match, a child came to me and wanted to take a picture.
'That day I said no because of the result [and the refereeing]. I learned that the child was Kylian Mbappe. I want to pay my debt now.'

'I was hurt when Cristiano Ronaldo won his fifth Ballon d'Or' - Lionel Messi reveals

Barcelona superstar, Lionel Messi was crowned the first-ever player to win six Ballon d’Or trophy at a ceremony which took place in Paris on Monday night (Dec,2).

Before the event, Messi and his arch-rival Cristiano Ronaldo who both dominated the Ballon d’Or for a decade between 2008 and 2017, were on five each before the Barcelona superstar broke the tie yesterday.

In a new interview, Messi revealed that he was hurt when Cristiano Ronaldo joined him on five Ballon d’Or triumphs, claiming that the Portuguese will be experiencing similar emotions after he failed to show up at the 2019 Ballon d'Or' ceremony.

“On the one hand, I enjoyed having five and being the only one,” Messi told France Football. 'When Cristiano moved level, I admit that it hurt me a bit. I was no longer alone at the top. But it made sense, although it was good when I was alone at five.

“Was I frustrated in the last few years? Let's say I understood why I did not win. As a team, we had not achieved our major goal, which was to win the Champions League, which gives you more chances to win the Ballon d'Or.

“When Cristiano Ronaldo won it is because he had achieved great seasons by winning the Champions League and being decisive. It was deserved, there was not much I could do.

“Did I feel injustice? It's up to you to tell me if the Ballon d'Or is awarded to the best player or the one who enjoys the best season.

“It is also down to individual taste. Some prefer Cristiano, others myself or Neymar or [Kylian] Mbappe. People have the right to choose the one they like most.”

“Do I understand Ronaldo's frustration? It is something that we live, feel and express according to our own way of being.

“Once again, the collective titles are the most important thing, even if the individual trophies are rewarding. When the Ballon d'Or eludes you, everyone reacts in their own way. But when you are a top athlete, you always want to win.”

Chelsea vs Aston Villa: Lampard singles out one player

Chelsea manager, Frank Lampard, has praised Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish and feels his good form, might see him get a first England call up.
Grealish has four goals and three assists in his last eight games for Dean Smith’s side.
And Lampard’s will be looking to nullify his threat, after two consecutive league defeats, when the two sides meet on Wednesday.
“I think he’s doing it,” Lampard said of Grealish putting himself in the debate for a Three Lions call-up, in quoted reported by Goal.
“He’s playing at a level now where he is obviously forcing himself into the argument. It’ll probably be a matter of time.

“I never want to tell Gareth what to do but his performances at the moment of a really high level. He’s a big threat for us and a fantastic player. His game has really come on. He is a joy to watch when he’s not against you because he moves so well with the ball. He’s a really good player.”

EPL: Guardiola speaks on beating Liverpool to title after win at Burnley

Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, has said it is “crazy and stupid” for his team to think about the title, despite a 4-1 win at Burnley on Tuesday night.
City moved to within eight points of leaders Liverpool thanks to a Gabriel Jesus double and further goals from Rodri and Riyad Mahrez at Turf Moor.
However, Guardiola speaking to reporters after the game, played down their chances of overtaking the Reds.
“For the distance we have with Liverpool it would be crazy to think about the title.
“Like everyone say we are out, we have no chance.

“We are thinking about ourselves and the next game. To think how many ways to win to be close is a stupid way to think,” he said.

EPL: What Guardiola said about Gabriel Jesus after 4-1 win over Burnley

 December 4, 2019

Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, has insisted there are no doubts over Gabriel Jesus’ ability to step up and fill the void left by the injured Sergio Aguero.

Jesus ended a five-match scoreless run in the Premier League, with City’s first two goals, in a 4-1 win art Burnley on Tuesday.

Aguero has missed the last two league matches with a thigh injury and is also set to be out for the Manchester derby on Saturday.

However, Guardiola says none of City’s players or coaching staff, had any concerns over Jesus’ form.
“Of course it’s not easy [replacing Aguero] but the team doesn’t have doubts about him.

“As a striker sometimes you score, sometimes not. We need the quality of the players up front to make the difference.

“Of course we need him. The strikers are there to score goals and we need him. His effort, commitment, which is always there, but of course, strikers like him and Sergio live for goals, it was important.

“We played a good game. Controlled them, didn’t concede much, except one action in the first half and a goal in the last minutes. We played really well. The quality of our players made the difference,” Guardiola told Amazon Prime.
