I'm pained - Grieving widow narrates how her husband died in police custody in Bauchi seven months after their wedding

The wife of a 33-year-old shopkeeper allegedly died in police custody in Bauchi State, wants everyone involved in his death to be punished.

LIB had reported Dauda Danlami was allegedly tortured to death by the police on Thursday, July 8, 2021 after his arrest in Yelwa Kgadama, a suburb of Bauchi metropolis.

Speaking to Punch , Altine Danladi, 28, said she is pained over the death of her husband seven months after their wedding and demanded for justice.

"My husband and I woke up on the morning of Thursday, July 8, 2021 and he was hale and hearty. We had our morning devotion, after which I prepared breakfast. After that, we went into the bathroom and bathed together. Thereafter, we had breakfast together. Then, I dished food into a food flask for him to take to his shop, so he could eat later. I left him at home while I left for the private school where I teach. He, too, later left for his shop," she narrated.

"I usually close from work at 1.30pm, and after I closed for the day, I called to ask him if he wanted me to bring food for him at the shop, but he said he had some left from the one I dished for him in the morning.

"Before we parted ways in the morning, he gave me N2,000 to buy maize and grind, so we cook ‘swallow’. When I got back home, I went to his shop and still took food to him. I left him and went to the salon to wash my hair and did manicure and pedicure. From there, I went to a shop close to his and bought the maize but the money was not enough. When I told him, he pleaded with the seller to let us balance the payment the following day.

"When I got back home, I did some house chores and I started cooking dinner. While I was at it, one of my neighbour’s children ran to tell me that my husband had been arrested. I immediately left what I was doing, locked my door and rushed to the shop. My husband’s neighbour had gone into his shop and gathered all the handsets that he was charging before his arrest, so he gave them to me and I locked his shop.

"I called my mother-in-law and told her what had happened and she told me to be calm. I also called my sister-in-law. All his siblings kept calling me, saying I should be calm since it was the police that arrested him.  They said we would go to the station the following day to bail him.

"The following day, my mother-in-law and I went to the station but they told us that it was too early to visit. They told us to hang around till 10am. Some minutes to 10am, we went back and asked to see Dauda Danladi. They kept calling but Dauda didn’t come out; they told us that there was nobody with such name. When I insisted, they called again and a boy called Dauda came out but I told them he wasn’t

"While we were there getting confused, a policeman asked me to come inside and asked me if my husband was sick? But I told him that my husband was very well. Then he told me that my husband fell sick and had been taken to hospital. Later, a man in mufti came and asked us to enter another office and asked us to sit down. After we sat down, he then told me that my husband had died.

"I became confused and I started shouting and crying. My sister-in-law, who was outside, heard my voice and rushed in. When she learnt about what had happened, she fainted. After awhile, she was revived and started to scatter things in the office. She picked a stone and broke the glass window. They then started beating her like a criminal. The police claimed my husband died of asthma, but that is a lie, my husband wasn’t asthmatic.

"I cannot describe how I feel, really (crying) I didn’t….I never (crying) expected this…It is very early. Our marriage was just seven months and now …(crying). He said he opened that shop majorly to be able to meet my needs and to make me happy. His mother even got a piece of land for him to farm but he said he’d prefer to stay in the shop because it would pay him more. The women selling around him knows that anytime I went to his shop and had a need for money, I would just go in and take the amount I needed and went to buy whatever I needed. That was how we were living together in peace.

"I demand justice for my husband because he was healthy and was never wayward nor was he into drugs. He was at his business place, trying to provide for his family, and he never did any wrong.

"I want everyone involved in the death of my husband to be punished; they should face the wrath of that law because they took the life of an innocent man. They should be punished and they should be removed from the Police Force because they don’t deserve to be there."

Police accused of torturing 33-year-old man to death in Bauchi

The family of a 33-year-old man, Dauda Danladi, has accused the Bauchi State Police Command of torturing him to death.

It was gathered that Dauda, who got married last year, died on Thursday, July 8, while allegedly in police custody.

He was said to have been arrested by a team of security operatives in front of his shop located in Yelwa Kagadama, a suburb of Bauchi metropolis around 9pm on Thursday.

An eyewitness, Liatu Nuhu, who sells groundnut milk and rice gruel close to the shop of the deceased told Punch that the police and the vigilante arrived in Gestapo style and started arresting people indiscriminately.

"I was doing my business when, suddenly, the police and some vigilantes came, more than 10 of them, and started arresting people. The Divisional Police Officer got out of the vehicle and directed them, ‘Arrest him! Arrest him!’ And that was how they arrested the boys playing snooker, others who were chatting and the deceased who was standing in front of his shop," Nuhu narrated.

"We kept telling them not to arrest him, we told them that he was our neighbour here and we knew him to be someone of good character. We asked why they would arrest him, but they still took him away. Today (Friday) in the morning, we went to the police station around 7am, they told us to stay at a far distance and wait for the DPO to come to the office. So, I decided to go to my place of work. By 10.15am, I returned, only for me to see the deceased’s wife crying profusely. When I asked her what happened, she told me that her husband was dead." he added.

Speaking to Daily Trust, the younger sister of the deceased, Dorathy Danladi, said her brother was arrested while in his shop alongside some other young men who were playing snooker in the area.

She said the family was not told the offence the deceased committed and were surprised to later learn that their brother and breadwinner of the family died in custody under questionable circumstance

"They have refused to give us his corpse. We want them to give us his corpse so that we can confirm what they are saying because we know that when they arrested him last night Thursday, he was hale and hearty,” she said.

She therefore, called on the Inspector General of Police and the Commissioner of Police in Bauchi to ensure thorough investigation into the matter and bring all those responsible for the death of their brother to justice.

When contacted, the Commissioner of Police, Bauchi State, Sylvester Alabi, told journalists on the phone that five people were arrested with a  revolver pistol in the area, adding that two of them were later released because they were found innocent while the other two were still being held at the Police station.

"The deceased was not even part of them, he was about 200 metres ahead. He was gasping for breath in his business place and the police assisted him to the hospital and then, he died. If police had not assisted him to the hospital, people would have said they are bad people. The police now assisted, now na wahala (sic). I have told the PPRO to go to the media and tell people the correct version of the story,” he stated.

In a statement issued on Saturday, July 10, spokesperson of the State Police Command, Ahmed Wakil, said the police received a distress call about a person who had slumped and was gasping for breath.

"Police rushed to the scene and met the victim who was later identified as Dauda surname yet unknown, lying unconscious and reasonably suspected to have an asthmatic attack and was quickly evacuated by the patrol team to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) for medical attention where he was unfortunately certified dead by a Medical Doctor,” Wakil stated.

The PPRO said that the Commissioner of Police in the state has ordered for a discreet investigation including autopsy to ascertain the actual circumstances surrounding the incident after which the outcome shall be made public.

Meanwhile, a brother of the deceased, Mark Danladi has taken to Facebook to demand for justice.

"Let it be upon record that My brother Dauda Danladi was gruesomely murdered on 8/7/2021 by some scoundrels labelled as the Nigerian police force NPF Yelwa division. They were on a raid arresting anybody they feel like. They forcefully took him away from his shop despite explaining to them he has a shop there. He was harrased and beaten to death for no cause," Mark wrote.

"Such mischievous act meted upon an innocent person is uncalled for. Police officers with such kind of barbaric attitude, should, as the matter of immediate effect be dismissed from duty . To face the law. Nigerian Police Force KILLED MY BROTHER. It's just pathetic."
