Super Eagles to travel to Benin by boat ahead of must win AFCON qualifiers

Gernot Rohr's players will travel to Porto Novo, Benin by boat, due to the proximity of both West African countries, it has been revealed
Ahead of their penultimate 2022 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying game in Porto Novo, on Saturday March 27, the Super Eagles players who are currently camped in Eko Hotel, Lagos, will leave Nigeria to Benin using the country's waterways.
After much debate and consideration amongst the NFF officials, citing security issues and time distance, the Federation have agreed to use boat instead of air or road transport to go to Benin.
The travel will occur a day before Saturday’s clash at the Charles de Gaulle Stadium in Benin.
Gernot Rohr’s men will be expected to return to Lagos by Sunday for their final Afcon qualifying fixture against Lesotho at the Teslim Balogun Stadium.
Earlier this month, the President of the Nigeria Football Federation Amaju Pinnick said the FA was going to abandon plans to fly to Benin and seriously consider going by boat and that they were in talks with the Lagos State Government.
"Going to Cotonou by boat, I do that all the time when we were going to inspect, we did it, there's nothing wrong in exploring other forms of adventure in Nigeria,” Pinnick said .
"There's nobody in Lagos that has not been to Ilashe or been to Tarkwa Bay, so it's the same thing, so what's the big deal?
"Look at the Lagos boat terminal, it's one of the best in the world that I've seen, so why don't we use all those things if we have them?
Nigeria lead the Group L table after picking up eight points from four matches while Benin trail the three-time African champions by just a point in second spot.

U.S. women's national team star, Megan Rapinoe has hit out at the U.S. Soccer federation, accusing the federation of fighting against the team's pursuit of equality during remarks made before a congressional committee on Wednesday, March 24.
The footballer, a two-time World Cup winner, has been at the forefront of her team's gender discrimination lawsuit against U.S. Soccer and on Wednesday appeared before the House Oversight Committee for a hearing designed "to examine the economic harm caused by longstanding gender inequalities, particularly for women of color,"
In Rapinoe's prepared opening statement she said: "It's my honor to be in front of you today. It's probably no surprise, but equal pay and equality in general is a deep and personal passion of mine.
"What we've learned and what we continue to learn is that there is no level of status, accomplishments, or power that will protect you from the clutches of inequity. One cannot simply outperform inequality or be excellent enough to escape discrimination of any kind.
"I am here today because I know firsthand that this is true. We are so often told in this country that if you just work hard and continue to achieve - you will be rewarded fairly. It's the promise of the American dream. But that promise has not been for everyone.
"The Women's National Team has won four World Cup championships and four Olympic gold medals on behalf of this great country. We have filled stadiums, broken viewing records, we've sold out jerseys, all the popular metrics by which we are judged.
"Yet despite all of this, we are still paid less than our male counterparts – for each trophy, of which there are many, for each win, each tie, each time we play. Less.
"In fact, instead of lobbying with the women's team in our efforts for equal pay and equality in general, the U.S. Soccer Federation has continually lobbied against our efforts and the efforts of millions of people marginalized by gender in the United States.
"And if that can happen to us, to me, with the brightest lights shining on us at all times - it can, and it does, happen to every person who is marginalized by gender. But we don't have to wait. We don't have to continue to be patient for decades on end. We can change that today, we can change that right now. We just have to want to."

She fielded questions from members of the U.S. House of Representatives, addressing issues related to equal pay and transgender rights.
Last year the US Womens team sued US Soccer Federation over it's unequal pay compared to the Men's team and unfair working conditions.
In December, the USWNT and U.S. Soccer reached a settlement over one portion of the team's lawsuit, involving unequal working conditions.
As part of the settlement, U.S. Soccer agreed to revise policies over charter flights, venue selection, professional support, and hotel accommodations.

Benin have not lost a match for eight years at home, it will not be easy' - Coach Gernot Rohr warns

Super Eagles of Nigeria Head coach, Gernot Rohr has warned that his team have to be wary of Benin ahead of their crucial Afcon qualifier this weekend.
Rohr believes the Republic of Benin will be difficult to play against, alas they are currently in fine form and have a full squad for the encounter.
Nigeria, three-time African champions will square off against the Squirrels, who are on a five-game unbeaten run, at Porto-Novo’s Stade Charles de Gaulle on Saturday.
Michel Dussuyer’s men last tasted defeat against the Super Eagles in their first Afcon qualifying game in November 2019.
But at home they have not lost for eight years and Rohr says his team must be humble and cautious.
"Benin have not lost a match for eight years at home, the last time they lost was in 2013 so you can imagine that we want to be the first team to win there in eight years," Rohr told reporters on Wednesday.
"It will not be easy, they have a very good defence, they were quarter-finalists in the last Afcon. They eliminated Morocco.”
Rohr also revealed Benin have all the players needed for the game as the country provided a private plane for their stars based in France to ensure they honour the match due to covid-19 restrictions.
"They have a private plane to help the French-based players, what we could not have, unfortunately,” he continued.
"They found the money to take a private plane and to bring them back by charter. This was the condition to get the French players."
Nigeria lead Group L of the qualifiers table with eight points from four games and victory over Benin or Lesotho will seal their place at the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled for Cameroon.

Egyptian embassy grant Mohammed Salah exclusive private security in Kenya ahead of Afcon Qualifiers

Egypt and Liverpool striker, Mohamed Salah has been given an exclusive private security team while in Kenya ahead of their Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Harambee Stars on Thursday, March 5.
The Egyptian national team touched down at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport at 9 pm on Tuesday night, March 23.
Upon arrival, a team bus drove them to Villa Rosa Kempinski, a few metres from the city centre in Nairobi.

But to the surprise of journalists and even other players, immediately Salah came out of the airport to head into the waiting bus, four well built men wearing black suits surrounded him and started protecting him.
The security team didn't even let the striker take selfies with fans.
According to reports, Salah was given extra security from the Egyptian Embassy in Kenya.
“Ahead of their trip to Kenya, the national association reached out to the Egyptian Embassy in Kenya and requested to make sure they provide enough security specifically for the player [Salah] and it was granted,” an Egyptian Embassy official told Goal.
“The request we know was only made for Mohamed [Salah], I don’t know about the rest or any other player,” the source further explained.
Egypt sit on top of Group G in the qualifiers with eight points, just ahead of second-placed Comoros on goal difference, and will need just one point from the two remaining encounters to qualify.

Sadio Mane has been handed a crash course in recent Liverpool history after posting a picture with former Liverpool striker El-Hadji Diouf.
While Mane is widely regarded as one of the club’s best transfer purchases, Diouf's time on Merseyside is seen far less positively.
Signed from Lens in 2002, Diouf endured a tumultuous time on Merseyside and has been involved in a series of bizarre swipes at Steven Gerrard since his departure.
The rivalry is said to have started when the Liverpool legend admitted he wasn’t the biggest fan of the controversial forward.
"I wasn't Diouf's No.1 fan,” Gerrard wrote in his 2007 autobiography.
"Being around Melwood and Anfield I knew which players were hungry, which players had Liverpool at heart. Diouf was just interested in himself.
"His attitude was all wrong. I felt he wasn't really a***d about putting his body on the line to get Liverpool back at the top."
Diouf has since fired back, claiming Gerrard ‘never did anything for his country’: "I have no problem with [Gerrard],” he said back in 2017.

"He is a strong character and I am a strong character.
"Stevie G was a very good player. People like him in Liverpool but he never did anything for his country.
"I am Mr El Hadji Diouf, Mr Senegal but he is Mr Liverpool and Senegal is bigger than Liverpool and he has to know that.”
But with Mane back in Senegal on international duty, he has posted two pictures alongside the man he described as his footballing idol.
“When I was young, I had lots of favourite footballers, but Ronaldinho was my real favourite, along with El-Hadji Diouf from Senegal,” he told Bleacher.

“They really inspired me. Those two players were examples for me as a footballer. They were skilful players and good dribblers who beat their opponents easily.”

A number of Liverpool supporters have since commented on the picture, with many making reference to his spat with legendary skipper Gerrard.
“One of the best LFC signings Vs Literally the worst LFC signing,” one said in reply.
Another joked: “Bet Gerrard will love you”, while a third replied: “This guy was one of the most overhyped and worst buys of Liverpool FC history”.
"I wouldn't be hanging round with him,” a fourth posted. “I’m a huge Liverpool fan, the worst signing for me was Diouf, geezer had a bad attitude on and off the pitch, loved the day he left Anfield,” said another user.
“Love you bro, but this @elhadji_diouf11_officiel doesn’t respect the Liverpool GOAT, Stevie G,” a Reds fan concluded.

Barcelona named best club of decade

The International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS) has named Barcelona the best club of the past decade.
"FC Barcelona won the CLUB WORLD RANKINGS of the First Decade (2001-2010) and also of the second Decade (2011-2020)," the IFFHS said in a statement.
Barça were ranked with 2,877 points with rival Real Madrid second on 2,782 with German giants Bayern Munich completing the top three with a points tally of 2,594.5.
Founded in 1899, FC Barcelona have won five UEFA Champions League titles, three FIFA Club World Cups, five UEFA Super Cup trophies, and 26 Spanish La Liga tournaments.
Before coming up with these rankings, IFFHS usually takes into account the number of points claimed by a team in domestic competitions, as well as their performances in the European competitions.

UFC star, Israel Adesanya is under fire over the 'rape' comment he made towards his fellow fighter.
“Bro, I will fuckin’ rape you,” the Nigerian-born New Zealand MMA fighter posted in a video to his Instagram story directed at fellow UFC middleweight Kevin Holland, who had targeted him with a series of insulting remarks last week. Adesanya later deleted the post.
New Zealand's deputy prime minister, Grant Robertson, who is also the sports minister, has now blasted the middleweight champ and called on the UFC to take action.
He said: "There is never a time to make flippant comments about rape. It's just not something anybody should do.
"I’m sure Israel understands that. I believe he has deleted the tweet in question. It will be up to the UFC as to what they do.
“But I would certainly be making clear to him, and to anybody actually, that we have to take rape seriously.
"It's not an issue that anyone should be making jokes or flippant comments about at all."
Rape Prevention Education executive director Debbi Tohill also told NZ outlet Stuff: "People with a large social media following can play a significant role in reducing rates of sexual violence and creating healthy cultures of consent for any sexual activity.
"Conversely, this kind of comments where rape is used as a threat create a culture where it is acceptable to make sexualised comments with the potential to cause further harm.
"Sportspeople and celebrities can really influence young people, we would like to see this happen in a positive way, not misused and normalising threats of sexual violence.”
Adesanya did not respond to the comments directly but tweeted a gif alongside the words: "Incoming clickbait NZ media in 3, 2, 1… This is what it’s all about…CLOUT!!”

US surpasses 30 million coronavirus cases

The United States has reported more than 30million cases of coronavirus since the pandemic began.
The nation surpassed the milestone on Wednesday, March 24, nearly 12 weeks after hitting 20m, according to Johns Hopkins University data.
No other country has recorded so many cases, and there is likely to be a high number of infections that have not been registered, the university said.
It added that the U.S. is also the hardest-hit country worldwide, when it comes to the absolute number of deaths from COVID-19, with more than half a million recorded.
So far, more than 46.3 million have been fully vaccinated in the US, while more than 85.4 million have received at least one dose.
Brazil has recorded the second-highest cumulative total with 12.1m cases, followed by 11.7m cases in India, where daily infections have climbed in recent weeks.

Super Eagles qualify for AFCON 2022

Nigeria have confirmed their place at the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations, even before the kick off of their game against Benin Republic in Porto Novo.
This follows a goalless draw between Lesotho and Sierra Leone in the early kick-off in Group L.
The result means Lesotho can no longer qualify for next year’s tournament in Cameroon.
It also means Sierra Leone cannot match the Super Eagles’ current tally of eight points.
The Leone Stars now have four points after four matches, while their hosts have three, with one round of fixtures left.
Gernot Rohr’s men take on the Squirrels by 5pm West African Time.
The three-time African champions are now fighting to finish top of the group.

Real Madrid president, Florentino Perez, has been left ‘very angry’ as Manchester United approached Villarreal centre-back, Pau Torres, according to Spanish outlet El Desmarque.
Perez sees Torres as the perfect long-term heir to Real Madrid captain, Sergio Ramos, who is out of contract with Zinedine Zidane’s side at the end of the season.
Torres has a relatively affordable release clause of €60million (£51million).
The 24-year-old has a growing list of admirers following a string of brilliant displays in LaLiga and the Europa League this season.
Man United are also keen to sign Torres at the end of the season with the Red Devils manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, a huge admirer of the Spain international.
Solskjaer is determined to add a new centre-back in his squad whom he can rely on in fitness terms, with Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly proving fitness concerns occasionally so far this season.

South Africa Failed To Qualify For The 2022 AFCON After A 2-0 Lose To Sudan

Quote:Bafana Bafana failed to qualify for the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations after a 2-0 loss to Sudan in the final qualifier match of Group C on Sunday evening.
Bafana coach Molefi Ntseki made four changes, with Thabang Monare, Ben Motshwari, Lebohang Maboe and Luther Singh all drafted into the line-up.
Bafana had a horrible start as they were on back foot from the fifth minute after Saifeldin Bakhit gave Sudan the lead with a towering header.
Ntseki's charges were getting a lot of chances after that but they could not bury them, with the Sudanese shot-stopper also on top of his game.
Bafana were caught on a counter-attack in the 32nd minute as Mohamed Abdel Raman went on a run from the wing, burst his way inside the box and fired a powerful strike past goalkeper Ronwen Williams at the near post.
Sudan were defending deep in their own half in the closing stages of the first stanza, which did well to restrict Bafana in the final third as they went in search of a goal.
The visitors had a chance to pull a goal back ten minutes from the break after Thapelo Morena chipped a cross towards the back post but Motshwari's shot was saved by Eshrein.
Ntseki raised eyebrows with the substitution of Percy Tau on the hour-mark, bringing on defender Sifiso Hlanti on his place, in a triple substitution that also included the introduction of Ruzaigh Gamildien and Lyle Foster.
Morena should have pulled a goal back for South Africa in the last quarter of an hour after going clear on goal inside the six-yard box but his low shot was saved by Eshrein.
Sudan were defending in numbers in the closing minutes, with Bafana unable to break them down as the hosts held on to claim a 2-0 win that booked them a spot at Afcon after finishing second while Bafana failed to qualify in third place.

Former Arsenal midfielder, Aaron Ramsey, is among six senior players up for sale at Juventus this summer transfer window, The Daily Mail reports.
Juventus will do their best to find a new club for Ramsey at the end of the season because the Walesman has been hampered by injuries this campaign and has started just twelve of the club’s twenty-seven Serie A games so far.
Ramsey’s current contract with Juventus will expire in 2023, which could see him hard to move on as no other club is likely to give him anything like the wages the Bianconeri are paying him.
Other senior players up for sale are Paulo Dybala, Sandro, Adrien Rabiot, Rodrigo Bentancur and Juan Cuadrado.
Dybala will have one year left on his current contract after this season. Juventus wants to cash in on the Argentine international while they can, particularly after a poor campaign so far from him.
Sandro has been an essential player for the Serie A champions since joining the Turin club from FC Porto in 2015, but at 30-years-old they are now looking for a younger player at left-back.
Juventus are keen to back their manager, Andrea Pirlo, to rebuild the squad after a fairly disastrous first season in charge of the Old Lady.
Pirlo’s men crashed out from the Champions League at the round of 16 stages in a massive upset against Porto.
They are currently ten points behind Serie A leaders Inter Milan on the log.

Manchester City legend, Sergio Aguero announces he's leaving the club at the end of the season

Manchester City star legend, Sergio Aguero has announced he will leave the club at the end of the season.
The 32-year-old striker's contract expires at the end of the season and he has been told it will not be renewed after making 14 appearances so far this season due to injuries and illness.
The Argentine international, who signed from Atletico Madrid in 2011, has scored 257 goals in 384 appearances for the club.
"When a cycle comes to an end, many sensations arise," Aguero said in a statement. "A huge sense of satisfaction and pride remains in me for having played with Manchester City for a whole ten seasons—unusual for a professional player in this day and age.
"... As for myself I will continue to give it my utmost for the rest of the season with more titles and bring more joy to the fans. Then a new stage with new challenges will begin, and I am fully ready to face them with the same passion and professionalism that I have always dedicated to continue competing at the highest level."
He will be honoured by a statue at Etihad Stadium, alongside Vincent Kompany and David Silva, who left the club in 2019 and 2020 respectively.
City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak said: “Sergio’s contribution to Manchester City over the last 10 years cannot be overstated. His legend will be indelibly etched into the memories of everyone who loves the Club and maybe even in those who simply love football.
“This is not yet the moment for farewell words and speeches. There is still much to achieve in the remainder of the time we have with Sergio, and we look forward to his contributions to the challenges which lay ahead.
“In the meantime, it gives me great pleasure to announce that we will be commissioning an artist to create a statue of Sergio to live at the Etihad Stadium alongside the ones under construction for Vincent and David. And we look forward to the opportunity to bid Sergio a fitting farewell at the end of the season.”
The Argentine striker has helped City win four Premier League titles, an FA Cup, and five League Cups over his 10-year stay, with the club still chasing a quadruple this season.

Alex Iwobi has tested negative for Covid-19 ahead of Nigeria’s Afcon qualifier against Lesotho after his initial test returned positive before the Super Eagles faced Squirrels of Benin in Port Novo.
The negative result after a series of Covid-19 tests were carried out, was confirmed by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) in a tweet, meaning the Everton forward will be available for selection ahead of the final Nations Cup match against Lesotho’s Crocodiles.
The tweet read: “Update: @NGSuperEagles forward, @alexiwobi has tested negative after further COVID-19 tests were conducted.”
Nigeria top Group L with 11 points from five matches and have already qualified for the 2021 AFCON, which will be hosted by Cameroon in January 2022.
The Super Eagles will play their final qualifier clash against bottom nation Lesotho at the National Stadium, Surulere on Tuesday, March 30.
