IGP orders investigation into viral video showing police officers harassing a female suspect in Ibadan







The Inspector-General of Police, Adamu Mohammed, has ordered an investigation into a viral video showing some police officers in Ibadan, Oyo state harassing a female suspect.
 
The officers had gone to the home of a suspected kidnapper and armed robber to arrest him and there they met the 25-year-old lady who gave her name as Towobola.
 
The policemen, after taking the kidnap suspect away, faced Towobola, handcuffed her and accused her of sleeping with the alleged kidnapper.
 
One of the police officers who identified himself as ‘Wyclef’, brought out his phone and started to film the Tobowola as he asked her questions about her sex life.
 
Wyclef in the video mocked Towobola, telling her that young ladies are fond of dating men with questionable wealth which often lands them in trouble. He stated that if he were to woo Towobola, she would not give in to his advances but would rather have sex with criminals.
 
He went on to ask her if she was a virgin and how many men she has slept with. Towobola said she is 25, a graduate of the University of Ibadan and had just completed her NYSC.

Reacting to the video, the Inspector-General of Police, Adamu Mohammed, condemned the actions of the police officers and said they would be brought to justice. The statement from the police reads

''The Inspector General of Police has ordered discreet investigations into the circumstances surrounding the dehumanizing treatment meted out to a female citizen in the above viral video.


The IGP, while condemning the act, has directed the commencement of comprehensive investigations aimed at unraveling the true identity of the perpetrators with a view to bringing them to justice.


Members of the public are hereby assured that any member of the Force found culpable in the incident will be made to face appropriate sanctions.''

RE: VIRAL VIDEO – ALL PERSONS INVOLVED IDENTIFIED, 2 ARRESTED.

Following investigations into the dehumanizing treatment of a female citizen as shown in a viral video on Wednesday, 22nd July, 2020, the Nigeria Police Force have identified three (3) police officers and one (1) civilian accomplice who participated in the unprofessional act.

Two (2) suspects, ASP Tijani Olatunji and Inspr Gboyega Oyeniyi have been arrested for their role in the discreditable conduct and incivility to a member of the public.

They are currently being detained at the Lagos State CID detention facility, Panti, Yaba.

Preliminary investigations show that the policemen who are attached Area ‘A’ Command, Lion Building, Lagos, were on legitimate investigation activities to Ibadan, Oyo State where the incident took place.

Effort is being intensified to arrest the two other accomplices. Meanwhile, appropriate disciplinary procedure will be initiated as soon as investigations are concluded.

Update: Two more persons in viral video harassing a female suspect have been arrested







The Nigeria Police Force has arrested the remaining two persons involved in the dehumanizing treatment meted out on a female suspect seen at the home of a suspected armed robber and kidnapper.
 
The video of the men harassing the lady went viral on Wednesday, July 22.
 
The Inspector-General of Police, Adamu Mohammed, saw the video, condemned it and ordered the arrest of those involved.
 
Two police officers, ASP Tijani Olatunji and Inspr Gboyega were arrested for their involvement in the case on Thursday, July 23.
 
In a statement released today July 24, the spokesperson of the Force, Frank Mba, said the two additional persons arrested are CPL Aiyedun Akeem and one Ope Owoeye - the civilian accomplice popularly known as ‘Wyclef’, bringing the total number of persons arrested to four.
 
 Mba said an investigation is still ongoing after which the Force internal disciplinary procedures will commence for the officers.
 
Mba said police detectives from the State CID, Panti, Yaba, Lagos have established contact with the victim with assurances that justice will not only be done but will be seen to have been manifestly done.
