PSG condemn 'all forms of racism' after alleged incident in Istanbul Basaksehir clash

[Image: image?url=https%3A%2F%2Fnews.livescore.c...=3840&q=75]

9 December 2020,

Paris Saint-Germain have condemned all forms of racism following the postponement of their Champions League match with Istanbul Basaksehir.

Tuesday's Group H meeting was stopped after 13 minutes with both sets of players gathering on the sidelines following allegations of racism against the fourth official.

Basaksehir substitute Demba Ba remonstrated with fourth official Sebastian Coltescu, saying: "You never said 'this white guy'. Why, when you mention a black guy, do you have to say 'this black guy'?"

Both sets of players then left the field and play did not resume for over two hours before the match was called off and pushed back to Wednesday at 18:55 CET (17:55 GMT).

The game will restart from the 14th minute and a new refereeing team will be in place.
Due to Manchester United's defeat to RB Leipzig, PSG are guaranteed a place in the last 16.

UEFA has confirmed that a "thorough investigation" into the incident would be opened immediately.
Shortly after their players walked off the pitch, Basaksehir's Twitter account posted a message saying the club's assistant coach, Pierre Webo, had been exposed to racist behaviour by Coltescu.

The Turkish side also posted an image stating 'No To Racism', which was retweeted by the official PSG account, and the Ligue 1 champions have now followed up with a statement of their own.

"Tonight’s match between PSG and Istanbul Basaksehir was interrupted after 13 minutes of play following racist remarks by the fourth official to a member of the Basaksehir club staff," PSG's official account tweeted.

"All forms of racism go against the values held by Paris Saint-Germain, the club's chairman, staff and players."

While PSG have been definitive in their statement, UEFA's investigation is ongoing and the allegations against Coltescu have not yet been proved.

Messi would threaten PSG balance – Wenger

[Image: image?url=https%3A%2F%2Fnews.livescore.c...=3840&q=75]

9 December 2020,

Lionel Messi would threaten the balance at Paris Saint-Germain if he joined the club from Barcelona, says Arsene Wenger.

Six-time Ballon d'Or winner Messi has been linked with PSG and Manchester City after failing to engineer a move away from Camp Nou in the close season.

The 33-year-old was not allowed to leave the club on a free transfer and is expected to depart when his contract expires at the end of the campaign.
But with PSG already possessing Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, former Arsenal and Monaco boss Wenger wonders whether there is truly a need for Messi at the Parc des Princes.

"Lionel Messi is one of the two best players in the world. Those who will replace Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi are already at PSG," Wenger said to Europe 1.

"After that, it's a question of balance in the club, a technical balance and a financial balance. Can you keep the balance at PSG by bringing in players like Messi? I'm not sure."

Success in the Champions League is the primary objective for PSG, who were defeated in the final in August by Bayern Munich.

But having Messi does not necessarily guarantee success in the competition. The Argentina star had seven shots on target in Barca's 3-0 home loss to Juventus on Tuesday, the most by any player in a Champions League game without scoring since at least 2003-04.

Ronaldo, a five-time winner of Europe's premier club prize, became the first player to score two penalties against Barca in a single Champions League fixture, helping bring parity to his head-to-head with Messi in the competition; they now have two wins and two draws apiece from six meetings.
PSG will on Wednesday resume their final Group H game against Istanbul Basaksehir – which was suspended on Tuesday following allegations of racism – with their spot in the last 16 already secured thanks to RB Leipzig's 3-2 win over Manchester United.

Thomas Tuchel's team look set for a more significant challenge in Ligue 1 this term, though, with their advantage at the summit just two points after 13 games.

Wenger believes less ingenuity in the middle of the pitch is the reason they are finding things tougher in the top flight.

"PSG have a little less potential because they had, for years, an absolutely flamboyant midfield, which is now a little less creative," said Wenger.
"I see them a little less dominant and it's reflected in the standings in Ligue 1.

"But they still have exceptional players who can make a difference in key moments, as we saw again at Manchester United."

Wenger, who now serves as FIFA's chief of global football development, reiterated his objection to the possibility of PSG leaving Ligue 1 and joining a European Super League.

"I will fight until the last day so that sporting merit is rewarded. The closed league, for me, is no longer competition, it is business," he said.

"I will always be fiercely opposed to it. Everyone can dream and everything is possible for people who work well."

Messi fails in front of goal as Griezmann hopes 'very ugly' defeat wakes Barca up

[Image: image?url=https%3A%2F%2Fnews.livescore.c...=3840&q=75]

9 December 2020,

Lionel Messi had a record seven shots on target without scoring in Barcelona's 3-0 Champions League defeat to Juventus, which Antoine
Griezmann acknowledged must be a wake-up call.
Messi was heavily involved as Barca attempted to mount a comeback on Tuesday after conceding twice in the first 20 minutes of a Champions League home match for the first time.

The superstar captain had more touches (125) and contested more duels (19) than any other player on the Camp Nou pitch.

Messi also sent in 11 shots, seven of which hit the target, but he could not beat veteran Juve goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, whose shirt the former took away at full-time.

Instead it was old rival Cristiano Ronaldo who carried his side to the top of Champions League Group G, scoring two penalties either side of Weston McKennie's volley.

Those were Ronaldo's first goals against Barca in the competition after drawing a blank on five occasions.

It was Messi's turn to fall short in front of goal as, since Opta records began in 2003-04, no other player has had seven efforts on target without finding the net.

However, Messi was the only Barca player to actually test Buffon, with eight of the nine attempts from his team-mates missing the target and Martin Braithwaite seeing the other blocked.
Griezmann accounted for three wayward efforts and did not hold back in his criticism of a blunt Barca performance.

"There was a lack of desire, of attitude. It was all wrong," he said. "A bad day, a bad game.
"The fault lies with the players - we are the ones who play. We have to work. We have to win on Sunday [against Levante] because it gets more complicated for us if not.

"Today has been very ugly. We have the level to fight for our objectives. This is a blow, but it comes in handy to wake us up."

Barca head coach Ronald Koeman added: "We started the game badly, without aggression. It seemed that we were playing not to lose. We were not in control.

"We have not been good defensively. We lost the game in the first half hour. I always try to prepare the game, how they have to go. We left spaces.
"You can also discuss penalties. For me, the first is not a penalty. But it was our fault."

PSG vs Istanbul Basaksehir: Romanian fourth official at the centre of racism accusations speaks out for the first time since the incident as he faces a ten-match ban

Sebastian Coltescu, the fourth official accused of using racist language towards Istanbul Basaksehir's Cameroonian assistant manager, Pierre Webo, sparking a player walk-off, has spoken out for the first time since the incident.

The Group H encounter against Paris Saint-Germain was suspended midway through the first half on Tuesday night, December 8, after Pierre Webo vehemently protested a decision on the touchline.

The 38-year-old accused Coltescu of racism after being shown a red card, with footage from the incident appearing to show him saying in Romanian: 'The black one over there. Go and check who he is. The black one over there, it's not possible to act like that' after Webo vehemently protested against a refereeing decision.

It is believed Coltescu said "negru", the Romanian word for black.

After a lengthy delay, the game was eventually called off with the remaining minutes to be played on Wednesday at 6:55pm local time with a new refereeing team in charge led by Holland's Danny Makkelie. read previous report here.

Coltescu has now defended his character, insisting that 'anyone who knows me knows I'm not racist'

'I just try to be good,' he said, according to Romanian outlet ProSport. 'I'm not going to read any news sites these next few days. Anyone who knows me knows that I'm not racist! At least that's what I hope.'

A UEFA investigation has been launched following the postponement of the match at the Parc des Princes as both sets of players refused to continue midway through the first half.

UEFA said: 'In accordance with the Article 31(4) of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations, an Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector has been appointed today to conduct a disciplinary investigation regarding the incident.'

The statement also said that 'a thorough investigation will be opened immediately' and that Coltescu does face the prospect of a minimum 10-game ban if found guilty of using racist language on the touchline.

Arsenal star, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang fined $10000 by the CAF for 'undermining' the image of African football

Arsenal captain, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been fined $10000 for sharing a series of social media posts that tarnished the 'honour and image' of the Confederation of African Football.

Recall, the Gabonese striker took to social media last month to claim that he and the rest of the Gabon squad were held at Banjul Airport in Gambia for more than six hours overnight after having their passports taken — before being allowed into the country for their Africa Cup of Nations qualifier clash.

[Image: 41ca17913200aeb8adab5fbb0fb1613e?quality=uhq&resize=720]
He posted images of his team-mates sleeping on the airport floor and claimed they were made to feel like 'hostages' over COVID-19 testing before their clash with Gambia.
[Image: 9f64d72185ebb26328ec7cdf413de0f0?quality=uhq&resize=720]
Aubameyang also called for the CAF to take responsibility and use the disruption to better themselves.

He wrote: 'Nice job CAF, it's as if we were back in the 1990s.'
[Image: 1abae6a388d50f134463ff7126ebc416?quality=uhq&resize=720]
Before adding: 'It will not demotivate us but people need to know and especially that the @CAF_Online [Confederation of African Football] take these responsibilities,.

'2020 and we want Africa to grow, that's not how we're going to get there!!!'

[Image: afd7a3fd5fc32010944b0a689d7a7cd3?quality=uhq&resize=720]
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) stated Aubameyang's decision to document the event on social media was 'offensive and degrading'.

“Mr. Pierre Emerick Emiliano Francois Aubameyang has publicly published offensive and degrading material that undermines the honour and image of the Confederation of African Football,” a statement from Caf read.

“In terms of the Caf Statutes & Regulations, in terms of Articles 10, 11, 43.1, 46, 82 of the Disciplinary Code, the Caf disciplinary board decided to impose a fine of 10,000 USD for breach of the values of sportsmanship and integrity on the Gabonese Football Federation for the regrettable behaviour of the player.”

Anthony Joshua vs Kubrat Pulev heavyweight title fight: Tyson Fury, David Haye, Eubank Snr, Dillian Whyte and more give their opinions

Boxing Heavyweight champion, Anthony Joshua will face challenger, Kubrat Pulev on Saturday night, December 12, 2020, and the win is necessary for Joshua to engage in an undisputed heavyweight title clash with Tyson Fury in 2021, to determine the true king of the heavyweight division.

Joshua's last fight was in December 2019, but he is very much aware of the strong test that awaits him on Saturday at the Wembley Arena.

“In terms of the time I’ve had off, I’ve had to toughen myself up again and get used to taking punches to the head and body and getting my hands strong again, and just getting myself prepared for a tough fight on December 12,” Joshua told William Hill.

“Pulev’s experienced. He’s 39 now. What I’ve learnt from facing experienced fighters such as Alexander Povetkin and Wladimir Klitschko is that they can still be lively and do a lot of damage. At that age, the last thing you lose as a heavyweight is your power. He’s got that power.

“I’ve noticed from the analysis that he’s dropped a few guys with the jab. He’s very balanced so if you attack him and you’re not balanced then you can fall into his range. I’ve got to make sure that my attacks are spot on because he’s very good at punching opponents who make mistakes.

“He’s well experienced as well and has been in there (the ring) with good fighters. He’s got two other things: good work rate, where he’s used to going 12 rounds, and the last thing is he’s got a really good body shot as well.”

Ahead of the Saturday fight, some boxers have come out to give their predictions.

Dillian Whyte, who famously lost to Joshua in 2015 told SkyBet: “You know what? It is a run-out for Joshua.

“He’s just had two hard fights back to back, emotionally more than physically.

“So smart business, the Pulev fight. Pulev is old now and he was never really great in his heyday.

“He [Joshua] is happy to take care of his mandatory duties. So it’s a keep-busy fight.”

Ex-Heavyweight Champion David Haye told Sky: “I definitely think it’s a good fight for AJ.

“Big, Eastern-European guy who stands up straight, very tall, very strong, only ever lost to Klitschko.

“And in that fight he had a good go against Klitschko. So he’s got the power to cause some issues for people.

“He’s a rough tough guy that AJ will need to be in his best form for.

“But, if he is, I think he wipes the floor with Pulev. I think he’s significantly better.”

Former world Champion Chris Eubank Sr told the Express: “There are a few important variables that are important in this fight.

“Firstly, the way each fighter internalises this pandemic is an issue on top of what the fighters already have to manage.

“So much already depends upon this fight; the COVID factor adds an extra dimension to what in isolation is always harrowing.

“All things being normal, AJ has the better boxing IQ as proven in his contest against Andy Ruiz Jr, in a rematch I couldn’t see him winning because I thought he would try to use his power.

“Instead, he used his boxing IQ and took the championship titles back in impressive boxing form. If all is normal then AJ is no doubt the favourite.

“But because nothing is normal in these peculiar times, I suspect Pulev might win this fight and if I were a betting man, which I’m not, that’s where my money would be.”

Ex-Heavyweight Champion Joseph Parker told SecondsOut: “I know Pulev will come game, that’s a fight he’s wanted for a while.

“But Joshua, we’ve seen him come back from losing to Andy Ruiz and putting on a good display of boxing.

“I think he’ll just be too quick and too experienced.”

Pulev’s promoter Bob Arum, who also doubles as Tyson Fury's promoter told the Gary Newbon Sports Show: “I’m involved with everybody, including Eddie [Hearn].

“I said ‘don’t make plans so quick for a Fury-Joshua fight because I think Pulev is going to beat Joshua.’

“Let me explain my theory. Joshua got knocked out by Andy Ruiz, who is not a puncher, never been a puncher, and I know that because thirty odd fights that Ruiz had, we promoted.

“He has quick hands, he’s not a bad heavyweight, but he’s not a puncher. He devastated Joshua and knocked him out.

“So I think Joshua is still vulnerable and Pulev is a real tough, rugged heavyweight.”

Heavyweight Champion, Tyson Fury, who is arguably the most sought after fighter in heavyweight boxing at the moment, told iFL TV: “It’s heavyweight boxing, especially someone as big as they are, either could win.

“If Andy Ruiz can knock Joshua out, then Pulev definitely can.

“Pulev’s a lot bigger guy and punches probably harder than Ruiz does.”

Fury is the WBC heavyweight champion and awaits AJ if he wins.

Quote:[b]Ronaldo's Sister Posts Photo Of Messi Kneeling At Her Brother's Feet

Elma dos Santos Aveiro, Cristiano Ronaldo's sister, has published a controversial photo of Lionel Messi kneeling at the feet of the Portuguese forward after Juventus' resounding 3-0 win against Barcelona in the Champions League.[/b]

The photo received over 34,650 likes on Instagram in one day, and she had a positive message for Cristiano.

"My King. The best ever. Pride of my life," Aveiro wrote.

This is not the first time that the 47-year-old Aveiro has been active on social media with regard to her younger brother.

In August 2020 she claimed that Cristiano was left to do everything for Juventus.

"You did it better than anyone else, I'm proud to see you play and see your dedication, but unfortunately you can't do it all by yourself - it's impossible!" Aveiro wrote.

"You know football is like that, but you also have to think that you did your best and you are still the best."

Two months prior to that message, in June 2020, she criticised Maurizio Sarri's tactics after Juventus lost to Napoli in the Coppa Italia final.

"You alone cannot make miracles," she penned in reference to Cristiano. "I can't understand how you can play like that."

Robinho is sentenced to 9 years in prison for abusing a young Albanian woman

The Milan Court of Appeal confirmed this Thursday the sentence to nine years in prison to the Brazilian soccer player Robson de Souza “Robinho” for participating in a gang rape of a young woman at a nightclub in Milan in 2013, Italian media report.

Robinho, former player of Real Madrid or of Manchester City, played in the Milan in that season and participated with a friend, Ricardo Falco, in the rape of an Albanian girl who was celebrating in a local acquaintance in Milan his 23rd birthday.

Santos, who had announced the return of the 36-year-old Brazilian striker in early October, suspended his contract shortly thereafter following pressure arising from the sexual violence conviction he received in Italy.

In a statement published by Santos, it was explained that the operation was suspended so that the player could “concentrate exclusively on his defense in the process that takes place in Italy.”

Robinho denied the accusations in 2014, when the news broke that Italy was investigating him for these events.

In 2009, while participating in the English league, it emerged that Robinho was being investigated by the police for an alleged rape in a nightclub in Leeds (center), although, after being subjected to interrogation, he was released on bail.

Nigeria’s senior national team also known as the Super Eagles have ended the 2020 calendar year as the 35th best country in the world, and the 5th best team in Africa.

Ronaldo, Lewandowski and Messi named finalists for The Best FIFA Men's Player 2020

World football governing body, FIFA, has announced that Juventus/Portugal attacker, Cristiano Ronaldo, Barcelona/Argentina forward Lionel Messi and Bayern Munich/Poland striker Robert Lewandowski are the three finalists for The Best FIFA Men's Player award.

On November 25, a shortlist of 11 players including Kevin De Bruyne, Sadio Mane, Kylian Mbappe, Neymar, Sergio Ramos, Mohamed Salah, Thiago Alcantara and Virgil van Dijk was unveiled for the prize.

Lewandowski is considered the favorite for this year's award after helping his club win the treble while breaking goal scoring records.

Ronaldo claimed the prize in both 2016 and 2017, when he dominated the voting after leading Real Madrid to successive Champions League trophies.

Messi, meanwhile, is the reigning holder of the prize but is widely regarded to have had a disappointing year where his club went trophyless

Lewandowski is now in the final three against Messi and Ronaldo and the winner will be announced on December 17.

Lewandowski speaking to OLE  admits the competition is fierce.

"If you scored a lot of goals and won everything and were at the top, I don't think there's anyone I can compare myself to," the Pole said.

"I just focus and think about the next challenge, and so on. If I win the award, of course I will be happy because I know everything I did, that it was for the team, and I know that it will be a decision of the fans and the journalists who vote.

"It would be a unique feeling. If I won The Best it would be something spectacular for me and an award for the whole team, because I know how well we played.

"What we did last season, for me, was incredible and I think we were the best. We are the best, there is no doubt. And we want to stay in that place

"It's always special to win a FIFA award, a dream. Personally, I know how hard I worked and pushed myself to have the year I had. If you love what you do, it is possible to get the prize.

"But I insist, winning it would be a prize for the whole team. Bayern had an unbeatable year."

[b]Oshoala Listed In The UK Guardian’s List Of 100 Best Female Footballers Of 2020 [/b]

Asisat Oshoala listed in the UK Guardian’s list of 100 best female footballers of 2020

Asisat Oshoala has been ranked as number 33 on the Guardian's list of 100 best female footballers of 2020. She and Malawian star, Tabitha Chawinga are the only Africans on the list. Oshoala, who was at number 86 on the 2018 list and number 55 on the 2019 list, moved up 22 places on this year's list.

In contrast, Tabitha Chawinga, who was the highest ranked African on the 2018 list at number 71, fell 24 places to number 95 on the 2019 list and has now fallen a further 5 places to number 100 on this year's list.

Pernille Harder of Chelsea and Denmark was listed as the best female player for 2020, while Vivianne Miedema of Arsenal and the Netherlands was ranked second and Lucy Bronze of Manchester City and England was ranked third.

However, I have reservations about this list. I think that it was based on reputation rather than form. Former World Best Player, Lieke Martens, was ranked above Asisat Oshoala, even though she has had a bad year by her standards. Martens was injured during the 2019 World Cup and it took some time for her to recover and find her form. She was often played out of position when she recovered, especially when Graham was injured and Martens was made to cover for her. Meanwhile Oshoala had a great year and finished as the second highest scorer in the league. Oshoala was nominated in UEFA's team of the season while Martens was not nominated.

Similarly, there are lots of other Africans that did better than Tabitha Chawinga this year. Barbra Banda was the top scorer in the Chinese League and she fired Zambia to their first-ever Olympics. Temwa Chawinga (Tabitha's sister) fired Wuhan to first Chinese title and Ajara Nchout was the top scorer/winner of the Norwegian league.

Manchester United can win the Premier League - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Despite the club's inconsistent start to the season and elimination from the UEFA Champions league, Manchester United can win the Premier League title this season, according to club manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Red Devils take on Manchester City at Old Trafford on Saturday - only days after they were eliminated from the Champions League by RB Leipzig in a disappointing 3-2 defeat.

This season United have endured a 6-1 loss to Tottenham and home defeats against Arsenal and Crystal Palace but can gi within two points of league leaders Tottenham if they manage to get the victory against Manchester City.

United have won their last four Premier League games, with three of those victories coming on the road after going behind, and Solskjaer feels his team can be title contenders.

"At Manchester United, you should always aim to win trophies," Solskjaer said.

"Of course, with the last three seasons, as they have been, there's been two teams far ahead of the rest of the pack.

"I got belief during the season, or since the turn of the new year, that this team is improving and that we can put up a challenge.

"Of course we need to improve on last season but I don't think any team will run away with it.

"I go into every single game wanting to win, so maybe that's the answer to your question. If you win every game you end up with a trophy."

The derby nobody wanted to win: Man United vs Manchester City Derby drama ends in goalless draw  (Photos/Recap)

Manchester United and Manchester City played out a bore derby stalemate at Old Trafford on Saturday night, December 12.

The game, devoid of excitement, was a missed chance for both teams looking for vital points to climb the Premier League table and catch league leaders Tottenham, Liverpool and Chelsea.

In the first half, Gabriel Jesus was off target while Riyad Mahrez brought a routine save from David de Gea while Scott McTominay almost scored from Victor Lindelof's flick as United sought the breakthrough.

In the second half, Kyle Walker fouled Marcus Rashford but the decision with the home team hopeful of a penalty, but the decision was overturned as VAR revealed the United striker was offside.

Despite the tactical awareness of both teams, the math ended in a draw leaving United seventh in the Premier League and City a place below them.

The match comes after Manchester United's Champions League exit following the loss against RB Leipzig during midweek.

Manchester City on the other hand kept their sixth successive clean sheet since losing at Tottenham in November.

United boss Ole Solskjaer reacting to the draw said; "In my time against Manchester City that's the best performance we have had - not the best result but the best performance. I know we beat them a few times last season but those were different games.

"It was a tight game. It's two good teams. Tactically we knew they were going to give us some problems but defensively we were excellent. I'm delighted with the defensive shape.

"With the ball we didn't create as much as we wanted to. They probably had the bigger moments in open play. But everyone should be happy with a draw."

City boss Guardiola said: "They started well after we finished the first half well. We created three or four clear chances, you cannot expect many against a team like United and it was a good point in the end. It will be a good point in the future.

"United is always a strong team, this is Old Trafford. They score when they can run but we controlled them really well.

"It is not a derby, it would be different with the people and maybe they pushed more. It is different every week without the people, the virus is still there, you have to be careful."

Anthony Joshua knocks out Pulev to retain world heavyweight titles (photos/videos)

Anthony Joshua in the early hours of Sunday, December 12, beat Bulgaria’s Kubrat Pulev, by a knockout in the ninth round to retain his three world heavyweight championship belts after a year away in a title defence.

Joshua regained the WBA, WBO and IBF titles in a rematch against Andy Ruiz Jr. last December in Saudi Arabia, after being stopped by the Mexican-American in an upset at Madison Square Garden that summer.

The first round saw both pugilists with lots of single punches, while none of them really managed to get anything special in, but Joshua had the snappier jab. Unbelievable scenes in the third round saw Pulev barely survive a huge AJ onslaught.

Although the Bulgarian came out for the third round more active than he was in the first two rounds, Joshua landed a one-two for the first meaningful shot of the round.

Then Joshua landed uppercut after uppercut to complement his overhand rights, and Pulev was left barely able to survive.

Joshua secured his 22nd knock-out against Pulev, bringing his bout records to 24-1, 22 KOs.

Zidane marvels at 'f****** great' Real Madrid midfield after derby delight

[Image: image?url=https%3A%2F%2Fnews.livescore.c...=3840&q=75]

13 December 2020,

Zinedine Zidane believes his Real Madrid midfield stars have rediscovered their best form after an influential display in their 2-0 win over Atletico Madrid.

Casemiro, Luka Modric and Toni Kroos started together in LaLiga for just the third time this season on Saturday and Zidane's team selection proved effective.

Madrid led through Casemiro's header and then extended their advantage courtesy of a Jan Oblak own goal in the second half.

Zidane was particularly taken by the displays of Modric and Kroos, with the World Cup winner completing 87 of 90 passes, the most in a league Madrid derby since at least 2005-06.

"We used [Modric and Kroos] to find the way out, it's true," said Zidane, who is unbeaten in seven games against Atleti. "We had to do it.

"And then playing fast from one side to the other and with diagonals, we found gaps. They're f***ing great, they're exceptional.

"Karim [Benzema], too, and Lucas [Vazquez], he is phenomenal, and [Dani] Carvajal, and our captain [Sergio Ramos], [Raphael] Varane. They are all very good."

The coach was further asked about the trio in the centre of the pitch, who now have competition in the form of Federico Valverde and Martin Odegaard.

"They are at the level of the three Champions Leagues we won in a row," he said. "They are playing at a very high level."

Victory against Atleti brought to an end an extremely successful week, having also won 1-0 at Sevilla and 2-0 against Borussia Monchengladbach to reach the last 16 of the Champions League.

"We confirmed what we did in the two previous games," said the coach, whose side restricted Atleti to one shot on target across the 90 minutes and no efforts at all before half-time.

"We competed very well throughout the game.
"But we don't have anything to celebrate because we haven't won anything. It's a good week.

"I'm happy for the players because they always believe in what they do. And when they get things done I'm happy. Let's enjoy and think about Tuesday [against Athletic Bilbao]."

Lampard dismisses suggestions Chelsea are strongest squad in Premier League

[Image: image?url=https%3A%2F%2Fnews.livescore.c...=3840&q=75]

13 December 2020,

Frank Lampard is not buying into suggestions Chelsea have the strongest squad in the Premier League after they fell to Everton.

Gylfi Sigurdsson's 22nd-minute penalty saw Everton to a 1-0 win on Saturday, ending Chelsea's 14-game unbeaten streak.

While they sit third in the table, the loss was a blow to Chelsea's title chances, left two points adrift of Tottenham and Liverpool, who play on Sunday.
Last week, Lampard's men were labelled Premier League favourites by Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp after their off-season spending, but the former England international dismissed suggestions he had the strongest squad at his disposal.

"I keep reading how we have the strongest squad in the league but I don't understand it," he told a news conference.

"There are squads and teams around us that have won titles in the last three or four years that have got players littered through their squad, who have wingers with 30 goals a year, strikers with 20 or 30 goals a year and people that have won the Champions League and league. We clearly haven't got that.

"We have young players, some players who have won titles, but we have some players in our squad who are new to the league. We have players who were playing in the Championship or on loan in the last two years.

"We are a work in progress and nights like tonight might happen. I don't like them but that's the challenge for us to make sure we bounce back strong and let's see for Tuesday."

Chelsea's final shot on target against Everton came in the 28th minute as they suffered their first Premier League away defeat of the season.
Reece James and Mason Mount hit the post for the visitors at Goodison Park, but Lampard lamented his side's slow start.

"I think we could have got something out of the game but I wouldn't say we were unlucky because it is football and I don't think we peppered their goal with great opportunities," he said.

"We had opportunities that you mentioned [James and Mount hitting the post] that could get you at least a point but we weren't at our best.

"We have been on a really good run and we knew what was coming with Everton with the physicality and in the early part of the game we didn't deal with that well.

"Once you go 1-0 down, you give yourself a problem and something to hang onto. The game went like that and we didn't do enough to break them down."

Chelsea will look to bounce back when they visit Wolves on Tuesday.

12 December 2020,

Chelsea missed the chance to move top of the Premier League table as Gylfi Sigurdsson's penalty secured Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti a 1-0 win over his former club.

Ancelotti endured a miserable return to Stamford Bridge last season with his current employers, Everton going down 4-0 in the capital.

However, he came out on top in a second meeting with Frank Lampard, who was part of the Chelsea squad who secured a domestic double under the Italian coach in the 2009-10 season.

The only goal of the game arrived in the 22nd minute thanks to an early Christmas gift from Edouard Mendy, the goalkeeper needlessly charging into Dominic Calvert-Lewin as the striker attempted to get on the end of his own flick-on from Jordan Pickford's long punt.

Sigurdsson calmly rolled in his attempt from the spot for his first league goal in 17 games, much to the delight of the 2,000-strong crowd inside Goodison Park.

Chelsea responded brightly to the setback of falling behind, Reece James striking a post with a low drive that Pickford appeared to get a slight touch to, while Kurt Zouma – who spent a season on loan at Everton earlier in his career – planted a close-range attempt straight at the England goalkeeper.

Richarlison failed to capitalise on a clear shooting opportunity before the break for the hosts, slipping as he struck the ball with his left foot to make Mendy's life easier.

Sigurdsson went close with a free-kick early in the second half and was then denied the chance to take another penalty when a VAR check found Calvert-Lewin offside prior to being bundled over by Ben Chilwell.

Still, one goal proved enough as Chelsea failed to find an equaliser, despite Lampard sending on Tammy Abraham in place of the ineffective Kai Havertz to partner Olivier Giroud up top.

Mason Mount saw a free-kick kept out by a post as Everton held firm, in the process securing a third successive home win over their opponents as they moved into the top half.

What does it mean? Sweet success for depleted Toffees Everton had stuttered after an excellent start to the 2020-21 season, winning just once in their previous seven league outings after opening up with four wins on the spin.

Their cause was not helped by a shortage of full-backs - Mason Holgate and Ben Godfrey did an admirable job either side of the excellent Michael Keane and Yerry Mina - in what was a battling display, as shown by them having just 28 per cent possession. Indeed, Chelsea failed to manage an on-target attempt in the entire second half.
Sigurdsson pulls the strings

The Iceland international has managed more Premier League goals against Chelsea than any other side in the competition, also scoring twice against them while playing for Tottenham and Swansea.

Everton's captain created six chances for his team-mates before making way in the closing minutes, while no one else on the pitch created more than two.

In it for keeps?

Mendy had seemingly solved the keeper conundrum at Chelsea, conceding just twice in seven league games prior to the trip to Merseyside. However, Lampard will have every reason to question why the signing from Rennes felt the need to rush out and confront Calvert-Lewin when the situation was under control.

What's next?

Chelsea are back on the road again during a full round of midweek Premier League fixtures, travelling to Wolves on Tuesday. Everton have an extra day to recover before they visit Leicester City.
