A 52-year-old pastor of The Redeemed Christian Church of God RCCG, Gabriel Diya, his 16-year-old son, Praise Emmanuel Diya and 9-year-old daughter, Comfort Diya, drowned inside the swimming pool in the Costa del Sol resort in Southern Spain on Tuesday December 24th.

Gabriel Diya who was until his death the Minister in charge of the Open Heavens of the Redeemed Christian Church of God in Charlton, South-East London, was on a family vacation with his wife and their children. Unfortunately, his daughter Comfort got into difficulty while playing in one of the 21 swimming pools in the resort.

Himself and his son jumped in to try to save her but also struggled in the water. Despite poolside attempts to resuscitate them, all three died at the scene. His wife, Olubunmi, who was with them prayed fervently as CPR was performed on her husband and children. Sadly, they were all confirmed dead by the doctors.

Post-mortem examinations carried out on Christmas Day confirmed death by drowning. After the incident, police carried out an investigation and could find nothing wrong with the pool’s filtration and pump system. The pool has since been reopened to the public.

The UK’s central office of RCCG has since described the unfortunate incident as a  “tragic accident”. In a post shared on Facebook, the church said

Quote:“With heavy hearts, we extend our condolences to the family, parish, friends and associates of Area Pastor Gabriel Diya who sadly passed away, along with two of his children - Comfort Diya (9 years old) and Praise Emmanuel Diya (16 years old) - in a tragic incident while on a family holiday in Spain on 24th December 2019.
Pastor Gabriel Diya, who was also the Parish Pastor of Open Heavens, Charlton in London was aged 52. He is survived by his wife Assistant Pastor Olubunmi Diya and their daughter.
At this very difficult time, our prayers are for Pastor Gabriel Diya's family, the parishes that were under his supervision, friends, associates, members of RCCG and the general public''.

Update: Wife of Redeemed Pastor who drowned with their two kids in a Spanish pool, opens up

A heartbroken Nigerian-British woman, Olubunmi Diya whose two children and husband drowned at a Costa Del Sol hotel in Spain has opened up saying they all knew how to swim.

She said she believes ‘something was wrong with the pool’. Olubunmi’s husband Gabriel and children Comfort and Praise-Emmanuel died in the Spanish pool on Christmas Eve after Comfort got into difficulty in the water.

Nine year-old Comfort was the one dragged who dragged the two others into the pool, after she began to struggle in the water. According to reports, she slipped and was unable to regain her footing, she began to drift towards the deep end of the six-and-a-half feet pool at holiday resort Club La Costa World near Fuengirola at 2pm.

Praise-Emmanuel, 16, jumped into the pool followed by their father Gabriel after hearing the screams of their 14-year-old daughter Favour, who had been playing with Comfort moments beforehand.

It was initially reported that the trio, who lived in Charlton, south east London, did not know how to swim properly, but the mother told Sky News on Friday, December 27th that something must have been ‘wrong with the pool that made swimming difficult’ because her husband and children all knew how to swim.

Mrs Diya’s comments contradicted earlier reports quoting her surviving daughter, Favour, who claimed the family didn’t know how to swim. Autopsy reports meanwhile said the three family members died by drowning.

Late Pastor Diya was head of Open Heavens, a London branch of the Redeemed Christian Church of God network. He also ran his own property business. His widow, an assistant pastor, is a systems analyst who owns her own software firm.

Olubunmi Diya Hires Lawyer As Husband, Gabriel Diya, And Children Drown In Spain

Ugly war of words breaks out over Costa Del Sol pool tragedy as British mother whose husband, son and daughter drowned hires a lawyer and blasts hotel while insisting her family COULD swim and a fault was to blame

*Olubunmi Diya's husband Gabriel and her son and daughter died in Spanish pool
*Mother has insisted something must be 'wrong with the pool' as trio could swim
*Fuengirola-based lawyer Javier Toro has been hired by Mrs Diya after the tragedy
*Hotel Club La Costa World has said an investigation found no issue with the pool

The 'utterly heartbroken' mother whose husband and two children drowned in a Costa del Sol swimming pool has hired a top lawyer to dispute claims they could not swim.

Olubunmi Diya, 49, said yesterday that 'something must have been wrong with the pool' that 'made swimming difficult' as she challenged the allegation her husband Gabriel, 52, and children Comfort, nine, and Praise-Emmanuel, 16, were not skilled in water.

Her words put the spotlight back on the six-and-a-half feet deep pool at Club La Costa World near Fuengirola, Malaga, where it has been alleged there were problems with the pump system.

However, resort chiefs have repeatedly claimed there 'was no malfunction of any kind' at the pool after Spanish Police found Comfort's swimming hat in the suction system.

The police have also conducted an 'exhaustive' investigation which they said found no fault with the pool.

Praise-Emmanuel and Gabriel jumped into the pool after Comfort lost her footing and got into difficulty. Daughter Favour, 14, had been playing with Comfort moments beforehand.

The children went into the pool using the steps but found themselves dragged into the middle, which was deeper and called for help when they could not get out.

In a statement to Sky News yesterday, she said her family has been left 'utterly heartbroken' by the tragedy.

'The whole family, all five of us went to the pool together and were all present when the incident occurred,' she said. 'The children were not left unattended. We followed the instructions displayed by the poolside at all times.

'My daughter did not fall into the water. My husband went in via the steps trying to hep the two struggling while I ran to the nearby apartments shouting for help to assist my husband. By the time assistance came, the three of them were under the water.

'I believe something was wrong with the pool that must have made swimming difficult for them at that point in time.'

A witness who helped perform CPR on pastor father-of-three Mr Diya told on Wednesday how his wife prayed and touched her loved ones' bodies to try to will them back to life.

Josias Fletchman, from Manchester, said in a moving account of how he tried to save them: 'The mum was praying for them to come back to life.

'She was calm. She was touching their bodies. She continued praying even after the ambulance people arrived and had stopped trying to revive them.

'She exercised her faith to the limit. I was performing CPR on her husband but I'm a believer and I prayed as well.

'She strengthened me in the way she reacted. It just wasn't meant to be.'

Mr Diya was head of Open Heavens, a London branch of the Redeemed Christian Church of God network founded in Nigeria. He also ran his own property business.

His widow, an assistant pastor, is a systems analyst who owns her own software firm.

Spanish police close investigation into deaths of Nigerian RCCG pastor and his family who drowned at Costa del Sol hotel pool, stating it was a freak accident and the pump was not faulty

Spanish police probing the deaths of a Nigerian RCCG pastor and his two children at the Costa del Sol hotel pool have closed the investigation.

Gabriel Diya, 52, his daughter Comfort, 9, and his son Praise-Emmanuel, 16, drowned on Christmas Eve at the Club La Costa World in Fuengirola.

A police spokesman described it as a freak accident, adding that the pump was not faulty. The spokesperson put their deaths down to a lack of swimming ability.

However, Gabriel Diya's wife, Olubunmi, wants the investigation to continue and is "not satisfied" their deaths were a "simple accident".

She previously said in a statement that her husband and kids could all swim. Her lawyer has said she could seek further investigations.

Mrs Diya, who lives in Charlton, south east London, also claimed "something was wrong" with the Spanish hotel pool after her daughter's swim cap was found in the pool pump by police divers.

But Spanish police handed the conclusions of their initial report to a magistrate and the findings will later be made public, according to the BBC.

Javier Toro, a lawyer acting for Mrs Diya, said different engineers could be brought in for a "parallel investigation" after police said their own findings point to the incident being a "tragic accident".

Hotel operator CLC World Resorts and Hotels has said Mrs Diya's claims are "directly at odds with the findings of the police report".

In a statement, it stressed police findings made it "clear that their exhaustive investigations have confirmed the pool was working normally and there was no malfunction of any kind".

An English translation of a Guardia Civil statement, released by the hotel operator yesterday, stated that tests had found "no irregularity" in the pool's system. It said investigations indicated the accident was "caused by the lack of expertise of the victims when swimming".

But Mrs Diya's lawyer was quoted by the BBC as saying: "It's very rare for three people to die in the centre of a swimming pool - especially in the case of a tall, hefty man. Something must have happened apart from a simple error or simple accident."

He said the family is "not satisfied with the interpretation of it being a simple accident".

"Clearly the death of three people at the same time in a pool makes it evident that something very strange happened. It's an event that must be studied," he said.

"We do not discard the option of opening a parallel investigation through different engineers... to figure out what happened".

According to the BBC, Mr Toro said the family hoped to be given the detailed police report on the deaths next week.

Mrs Diya, 49, and younger daughter Favour Diya, 14, were also on the holiday but were unharmed.

Mrs Diya has said her loved ones, who were reportedly on holiday with another unharmed daughter, were not left unattended and were somehow "dragged into the middle" of the pool.

They followed the instructions displayed by the poolside at all times, she said.

Poor swimming pool design led to drowning of Redeemed Pastor and his two kids in Spain - Expert

Days after a Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) Pastor, Gabriel Diya drowned in a pool in Spain with his two children, the sad incident has been blamed on human error and poor pool design by an expert.

Allen Wilson, said to be one of the leading swimming pool experts who investigate pool deaths alleged that human error and poor pool design contributed to the tragic incident which occurred at the famous Costa Del Sol in Spain.

The British pool expert who held the coveted role as President of the Institute of Swimming Pool Engineers, believes that photos of the pool show real danger as there was only a “single domestic pool outlet instead of two separate outlets as suggested by the Federation of Tour Operators guidelines for holiday complexes.”

According to Wilson, if there had been two outlets the vacuum pressure would have been halved; but this was not the case in the tragic incident. He added that swimming pools in Spain are considerably less up to standard than those in the UK.

He said;

Quote:"I have investigated many deaths of children and adults abroad for UK and foreign tour operators including TUI and Thomas Cook.
“Due to the traumatic nature of this incident, my company would offer to travel to Spain for the family to carry out a report, free of charge.
"In this case it appears from the family statements and witness accounts all to point to an excessive suction vacuum.
"I have seen the news reports and images and video of the pool with police divers and the actual pool appears to have been badly designed with just one outlet at the bottom of the pool.
"In my experience, this is likely to have been a contributing factor in the deaths.
"The daughter appears to have got into trouble along with her father and brother who seem to have been dragged underwater which can be a sign of a huge vacuum.
"This is usually caused by human error from turning off the skimmers - an overflow system that takes surplus water away - causing massive suction from the outlet at the bottom of pool during cleaning of pool filters or maintenance.
"The pressure of suction and current becomes enormous and when it starts dragging water in the pool towards it there is often no escape unless the pump is turned off manually.
"Swimming away from the current becomes very, very difficult if not impossible once it gets you in its grips.
"If there had been two outlets the vacuum pressure would have been halved but from what I have seen if you swam near the one vacuum you wouldn't get away.
"In my experience abroad many swimming pools have poor design or maintenance and standards are not the same as in the UK they are constructed to local standards instead which are not as stringent.
"Police are also not equipped to do this type of investigation it has to be done by specialists.
"There needs to be an immediate and impartial investigation by an independent swimming pool expert to examine the pool and its surroundings to find out what went wrong."

It was further gathered that the heartbroken wife of the late RCCG Pastor, Olubunmi Diya has hired a top lawyer after disputing police claims of her family members not knowing how to swim. Olubunmi said she was “disturbed” by “inaccurate information” issued by the police which claimed the trio had a "lack of swimming expertise".

She said;

Quote: “The three of them knew how to swim. We never informed the police or anyone that the family members could not swim.
“The whole family, all five of us went to the pool together and were all present when the incident occurred. The children were not left unattended.
“My daughter did not fall into the water. My husband went in via the steps trying to help the two struggling while I ran to the nearby apartments shouting for help to assist my husband.
“By the time assistance came, the three of them were under the water. I believe something was wrong with the pool that must have made swimming difficult for them at that point in time."

Nick Harris Head of Travel at Simpson Millar Solicitors who has handled hundreds of accident legal claims around the world, said:

Quote:"Clearly something has gone seriously wrong for all those family members to die in such a horrific way.

"They (the police) just appear to want to sweep it under the carpet and close the case as soon as possible as resorts popular with Brits want to protect their tourism industry.

"There has been no independent investigation which I would expect in these type of situations now the family must insist on getting their own experts opinions so they can find out what really happened."

This is one of the saddest news I've heard all month, and this has ruined my day. If they had learned swimming from Tauchschule Hurghada, they could be alive right now. I hope that no other person will die like this now.
