Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have put on a show of force at the Lekki tollgate ahead of a planned protest to occupy the tollgate on Saturday, February 13, 2021.
The operatives who were led by the head of the Rapid Response Squad, CSP Yinka Egbeyemi, also visited Ikoyi, Jakande Roundabout and Eti-Osa Areas of the state.
Egbeyemi also led his men to Obalende which yesterday witnessed unrest as a result of a clash between rival factions of the National Union of Road Transport Workers in the state.
The RRS shared pictures from the exercise on Twitter, stressing that it was done to deter crime as well as boost the morale of the officers in the areas.
“CSP Yinka Egbeyemi is presently leading a team of police officers on a show of force to Lekki Toll Gate (Admiralty Plaza) Obalende, Ikoyi, Jakande Roundabout, and other areas in Eti Osa as part of efforts to deter crime as well as boost the morale of his officers in the areas,” the pictures were captioned.
The organisers of the protest planned for Saturday are kicking against the decision which allowed the Lekki Concession Company to take back control of the Lekki tollgate where #EndSARS protesters are alleged to have been shot by soldiers of the Nigerian Army on October 20, 2020.
The decision was made last Saturday by the Lagos Judicial Panel of Inquiry and Restitution for Victims of SARS Related Abuses and Lekki Toll Gate Incident.

No Going Back’: #OccupyLekki Protesters Insist Despite Heavy Security
Youths under the aegis of #OccupyLekkiTollgate and #EndSARS Season 2 have insisted that they would proceed with their protest despite the presence of security operatives at the Lekki toll gate.
The protesters, who spoke to our correspondent on Saturday morning, insisted that they would hold a protest at the Lekki tollgate.
According to them, the presence of heavy security operatives at the tollgate was to only ensure peace.
“We are not going to be violent. No government has the right to stop a peaceful protest. We are not discouraged by the armed security men. We will be out to pass a message that bad governance in Nigeria must stop,” one of them, Wise man, said.
Another protester added that the protest would hold in line with the COVID-19 protocols and in the most peaceful manner.

Quote:Lawyers To Free 13 Lekki Protesters From Lagos Police
The protesters were arrested on Saturday
Two lawyers in Lekki said on Saturday they would quickly move to free protesters who were taken into custody by the police on Saturday morning.
At least 13 protesters were reportedly arrested after showing up early for the protest against reopening of Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos on Saturday. The toll gate was the scene of a deadly shooting by Nigerian soldiers on those campaigning against police brutality on October 20, 2020.
On February 6, a judicial panel hearing cases of police brutality in the aftermath of the #EndSARS protests gave its nod for the reopening of the toll facility, in a controversial 5-4 decision that immediately caused fissures amongst members.
Nigerians, however, kicked against the panel’s decision, saying it was insensitive to reopen the toll gate before victims of both the massacre and other unresolved police brutalities achieved justice.
On Saturday, 13 people were arrested when protesters streamed to the toll gate in Lekki, an affluent, water locked neighbourhood south of Lagos.
The arrests by a team of police task force drew immediate criticism from Nigerians following the development via social media.
“We condemn in its entirety the conduct of the Rapid Response Squad and Lagos State Special Taskforce of the Lagos State Command of the Nigerian Police Force,” said lawyers Oladotun Hassan and Ayo Ademiluyi in a statement, accusing the police of “foisting an atmosphere of intimidation on the ordinary citizens of our jurisdiction.”
The lawyers said they had commenced efforts to free the protesters and ensure that their fundamental rights were not violated.
The Buhari administration has warned of severe consequences for anyone who took part in the demonstration after seeing it as an attempt to destabilise public peace.

Police Charge Debo Macaroni, 39 Other Lekki Protesters To Court
The protesters were arrested on Saturday.
Quote:The police have charged about 40 Lekki Toll Gate protesters before a mobile court in Yaba, according to lawyers involved in the case.
The protesters, including entertainer Debo Macaroni, were charged on Saturday evening for taking part in a demonstration against injustice at Lekki Toll Gate, scene of October 20, 2020, killing of protesters by armed Nigerian soldiers.
The protesters were taken to Panti, a police unit notorious for handling tough criminal cases. It was unclear why all the protesters, who have not been accused of any crime, were taken to the station in central Lagos’ suburb of Yaba.
Two lawyers working on the matter told Peoples Gazette the protesters were currently being arraigned before a mobile court system. They are expected to be released after entering their respective pleas before the court, the lawyers said.
The arraignment comes hours after police commissioner Hakeem Odumosu said he had ordered the immediate release of the suspects.
Widespread condemnation has greeted the arrest of the protesters, with the Nigerian Bar Association reminding the Buhari administration of Nigerians’ fundamental rights to free assembly.
