Two policemen on escort duty and a woman were on Saturday night killed by gunmen suspected to be armed robbers at Orerokpe in Delta State, The Nation had learnt.
The policemen, identified as Inspector Otency Anebi and Sergeant Ikenna Emeka, were murdered around 8pm at Caroline Street, Okuoko by the gunmen who laid ambush on the family they were deployed to protect.
It was gathered that they were in a vehicle with a business mogul, Nnamdi Okekeocha and his wife Chinonye who were also shot at by the gunmen.
While the two policemen died on the spot, The Nation gathered that the woman passed on before they arrived a nearby hospital.
It was gathered that Okekeocha also sustained serious gunshot injuries and was allegedly unconscious in the hospital.
According to a source, the gunmen carted away a huge sum of money that was in the vehicle and also took the Inspector’s service AK47 rifle.
A source who hinted on the incident said they were returning home from a hotel when the gunmen suddenly opened fire on them.
“They came under heavy firing from the gunmen. The Inspector had his AK47 rifle and returned fire but they were overpowered. The two policemen were killed and the family they were protecting fatally wounded.
“The armed men took away a huge sum of money as well as the rifle of the Inspector. A nearby patrol team raced to the scene where they found an AK47 rifle with a live ammunition and 17 empty shells.
