WORK at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport Enugu will soon be restarted as the Federal Government of Nigeria has announced remobilization of contractors back to site, to complete the rehabilitation of the runway and terminal buildings
The Minister of Aviation, Sen. Hadi Sirika disclosed this on his twitter handle @hadisirika today saying, “We announce our full remobilization to Enugu despite COVID-19 lockdown.
“Even with challenges like heavy rains, opening up of quarries and bitumen sources we should complete this procurement in few weeks,” the minister commented.
Sirika assured the completion date of the works will be made known at his next inspection visit to the airport. “A definite date of completion will be announced at my next site visit”, he said.
Recall, Minister of Aviation on 31st March 2020 regretfully announced Federal Government’s inability to meet up it’s then April deadline suspending reconstruction work due to the global effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
He had then explained that the runway rehabilitation project had gone beyond 90 per cent, and would have been delivered in six to seven days but that the workers had to leave to be with their families in these trying times.
He said, “Considering that the construction workers have downed tools owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Federal Government, hereby, officially announces suspension of procurement.
The work would have been completed in six to seven days, but the workers left to be with their families in view of the social distancing,” the minister stated.
