EPL: My method of coaching is second to none, I won’t change – Mourinho insists

on
 February 22, 2021

Jose Mourinho has vowed not to change his style of coaching despite poor results with his most recent clubs.

The Portuguese waved aside suggestions that he needs to change his coaching philosophy after his current club, Tottenham’s latest loss at the weekend.

The former Chelsea, Real Madrid and Manchester United manager insisted that his methods are “second to nobody in the world”.

Spurs were defeated 2-1 by West Ham on Saturday being their fifth loss in six Premier League games leaving them nine points behind fourth place.

Asked if he would consider changing his philosophy, the former FC Porto boss said, “Not at all, zero.

“Sometimes results are a consequence of multiple suggestions. Mine, and my coaching staff’s methods, are second to nobody in the world.

“I don’t know what you mean by crisis. If crisis is frustration and sadness in the dressing room, I would say so, because nobody is happy.

“So I wouldn’t say crisis, I would say a really bad run of results. That is obvious; we are losing too many matches.”

Atletico Madrid vs Chelsea: Tuchel admits he tried to sign Luis Suarez
on
 February 22, 2021

[Image: skysports-thomas-tuchel-chelsea_5253145.jpg.webp]

Chelsea manager, Thomas Tuchel, has revealed he tried to sign Luis Suarez while he was coaching Paris Saint-Germain.

Suarez left Barcelona for Atletico Madrid last summer, but PSG were one of the clubs interested in signing the 33-year-old.

However, the former Liverpool striker decided to remain and has quickly become a key part of Diego Simeone’s side.

“It was a possibility. We heard the rumours he was about to leave Barcelona, and who cannot be interested in signing one of the best strikers in world football history and the present?” Tuchel said ahead of Chelsea’s clash with Atletico in Bucharest.

“We tried our luck, we did not make it. He decided to stay in Spain, move to Atletico, and has proven his quality.
“He is a natural striker, a born striker, and has the certain mentality that only strikers have.”

Suarez has 16 goals in 24 appearances for Atletico Madrid this season.

Six Nations 2021: Ollivon among five further France COVID cases, Scotland clash in major doubt

[Image: charlesollivoncropped_1f9b2ich95h7a1dz9c...uality=100]

Captain Charles Ollivon is among five further France players to have tested positive for coronavirus as Sunday's clash with Scotland comes under increasing doubt.

The latest round of testing took the total number of positives up to 14 as Ollivon was joined by Brice Dulin, Cyril Baille, Romain Taofifenua and Peato Mauvaka.

It was only on Sunday that Julien Marchand and Arthur Vincent were found to have contracted the virus, with the first reported case coming last Tuesday.

Prop Mohamed Haouas, wing Gabin Villiere and scrum-half Antoine Dupont are in the same boat, along with head coach Fabien Galthie, assistant Karim Ghezal, forwards coach William Servat and an unnamed member of the support staff.

Les Bleus, who top the table after wins over Italy and Ireland, revealed five more players had been called up on Monday for a game in Paris that may well have to be postponed.
Uncapped trio Gaetan Barlot, Thierry Paiva and Cyril Cazeaux have been drafted in, with Baptiste Pesenti and Thomas Ramos also getting the call.

A statement from the French Rugby Federation said the intention is to return to group training on Wednesday, though further testing would take place every day.

The Six Nations Testing Oversight Group (TOG) met on Monday to discuss the situation and will decide on Wednesday whether the Ireland clash can go ahead as scheduled.

A Six Nations statement said: "The TOG was advised by the French Rugby Union representative that all players who returned to the National Training Centre yesterday were tested on arrival and put in isolation pending results.

"All five players who tested positive have now left the training base. The rest of the squad, all of whom tested negative are training with restricted movement and no close contact for the next 48 hours. All players and staff will be tested every 24 hours.

"The TOG will reconvene on Wednesday 24 February in the evening to review the situation. A decision on whether the France v Scotland fixture can go ahead will be made at that stage.

"Ensuring the health and safety of all players and staff is our number one priority. Should the decision be that the fixture cannot go ahead, the match will be rescheduled for the earliest possible date."

Djokovic's position on world tennis throne not under threat from next generation, says Murray

[Image: novakdjokovic-cropped_mevicud9x3118v67rq...uality=100]

The next generation of tennis players are not close to knocking world number one Novak Djokovic off his mantle, according to three-time grand slam winner Andy Murray.

Djokovic’s big-match experience shined through while cruising to a straight-sets win over Russia’s Daniil Medvedev to seal his ninth Australian Open win and 18th career grand slam title.

The Serbian has lifted six of the last 10 slams, with 20-time slam-winner Rafael Nadal claiming three and Dominic Thiem capturing his first major honour at the 2020 US Open.

The draw opened up for the Austrian in Flushing Meadows when Djokovic was eliminated after defaulting in the fourth round when hitting a line judge with a stray ball.
Thiem is the only first-time winner of a major in the past 24 events over a six-year period, and Murray cannot see a changing of the guard anytime soon.

"The younger guys, for me, they've not shown that they're particularly close," Murray said.

"I expected the [Australian Open] final to be closer but it's a different standing to return or to serve in a grand slam final than a quarter-final or a semi.

"When you're coming up against someone who's won 17 of them, it's pretty intimidating.
"Obviously at the US Open, Dominic Thiem did what he had to do to win the event. But if Novak hadn't put a ball through the line judge's throat, it would have been the same outcome, I think."

Preparing for his first tour event of the season, an ATP 250 tournament in Montpellier, France, Murray has kept his distance from the grand-slam scene while rehabbing a long-term hip injury.

The 33-year-old admits he didn't even watch any of the action from Melbourne Park as he aims to rebuild his fitness and return to the highest level.

"I didn't watch any because I wanted to be there myself. It was a struggle to be honest," Murray added.

"I stopped following all the tennis players on social media and stuff because I just didn't really want to see it."

Murray goes up against world number 83 Egor Gerasimov of Belarus in the round of 32 on Tuesday, after finishing as runner-up to Ukraine's Illya Marchenko in an ATP Challenger event last week.

Simeone backs Suarez to use goalscoring 'gift' against Chelsea

[Image: luissuarez-cropped_1ueyc263x8mhi18gnofvc...uality=100]

Diego Simeone hopes Luis Suarez can use his goalscoring "gift" when Atletico Madrid face Chelsea in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Suarez is enjoying a fine season with Atletico, scoring 16 goals in 24 games in all competitions since joining from Barcelona.

However, he is without a goal or assist in four Champions League games this season. He has scored in each of his previous seven campaigns in the competition.

Atletico coach Simeone said the Uruguayan provided his team with a huge boost.

"For all competitions, not only the Champions League, Luis' presence generates hierarchy, generates confidence in our team and obviously a lot of attention in rivals because history joins a footballer that has a strong gift regarding his relationship with the goal," he told a news conference on Monday.

"So, I hope tomorrow we can play a good match as a team. And I insist about Chelsea, it is a great team and the new manager, who is very good, is making Chelsea play even better."
Due to coronavirus restrictions, the first leg of the last-16 tie will be played at the National Arena in Bucharest.

Simeone is wary of Chelsea, who are unbeaten in their seven games since Thomas Tuchel took over in January.

"We respect all opinions and we listen to everyone, but tomorrow we are facing a great team and the tie is very even," he said.

"We have been at the club for a long time and all of you know how we work – game by game and do our job."

Quote:[b]Roman Abramovich 'to Hand Chelsea £260m Warchest' To Sign Haaland And Others

It seems Roman Abramovich is not ready to rest on his laurels as he prepares to splash more cash this summer to get Chelsea back competing at the top of the table.[/b]

The Blues' owner sanctioned over £200million worth of transfers in the off-season in a bid to close the gap on their rivals.

But after sacking Frank Lampard and instilling Thomas Tuchel as his replacement, Abramovich now sees the need to further invest in the playing squad.

According to TuttoMercatoWeb , he is now set to plunge another £260million into the club, with Borussia Dortmund star Erling Haaland top of his wishlist.

Haaland has no shortage of potential suitors lining up for his signature, but with finances still tight for many clubs, Chelsea could steal a march in the race for the 20-year-old.

The striker is expected to leave Dortmund next year when the £65m release clause in his contract becomes active - with Man Utd, Juventus and Real Madrid all set for a place at the auction.

But Abramovich wants Chelsea to land Haaland 'at all costs', which could see them splurge the bulk of their transfer kitty on him this summer, rather than join a bidding war in 2022.

Dortmund are open to selling off their most-prized assets amid their current financial concerns, and could welcome collecting a higher fee for Haaland a year earlier than originally planned.

Haaland's notorious agent Mino Raiola has already outlined his client's demands: a five-year deal totalling £78m in wages - the equivalent of £300,000 per week.

Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke stated last month that he believed Haaland would remain at the club for at least another season.

He told Kicker : "Haaland gave himself the time to mature into an absolute world-class player in Dortmund. You won't be able to do that in a year."

"Because it is clear that if Erling should leave us at some point, then he will only go to an even bigger club, and so many are not considered.

"If you join a club like - just for an example - Real Madrid, you have to be world-class."

But following Haaland's latest two-goal display against Sevilla in the Champions League, taking his season tally to 27 already, he looks to have pushed closer to that status quicker than many expected, with Chelsea poised to pounce.

Chelsea are also in need of a new central defender, with Bayern Munich's Niklas Sule emerging as a possible target, while RB Leipzig's Ibrahima Konate continues to be linked.

Quote:Cristiano Ronaldo Has Now Scored Against All Serie A Teams

Juventus superstar, Cristiano Ronaldo, has now scored against every Serie A opposition he has faced.

Ronaldo scored twice in the first half, as Juve beat Crotone 3-0 on Monday night.
They were his 17th and 18th goals in the league.

Cristiano Ronaldo continued his march through Serie A opposition as he scored in Juventus' clash with Crotone.

Ronaldo fired two first-half goals for Juventus as the Portuguese star netted his 17th and 18th goals of the Serie A season.

In doing so, he moved closer to a mark currently held by Zlatan Ibrahimovic while making his own mark on Serie A history.

With his finishes against Crotone, Ronaldo has now scored against every team currently in Italy's top flight.

Crotone were the last team that Ronaldo had failed to score against, having now fired 70 goals since making the move to Juventus.

Of teams that he's faced in Serie A since joining from Real Madrid, only Chievo Verona have held Ronaldo scoreless.

Chievo are currently in Serie B, having been relegated after the 2018-19 season.

Chasing Zlatan

Crotone were also the 78th different side Ronaldo has scored against across his time in the top five European leagues, where he has featured for Manchester United, Real Madrid and, now, Juventus.

Since the turn of the century, Zlatan Ibrahimovic has scored against a wider variety of league opponents, with the Milan star having netted against 79 different clubs during that timespan.

Ibrahimovic has also been on a tear through Serie A this season as he's scored 14 goals in just 13 appearances for Milan.

Golf star Tiger Woods was injured Tuesday in a vehicle rollover in Los Angeles County, authorities said.

Woods had to be extricated from the vehicle with the “jaws of life” tools, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said in a statement.

Woods was taken to the hospital with unspecified injuries. The vehicle sustained major damage, the Sheriff's department said.

A KABC-TV helicopter over the scene of Woods’ accident showed a car on its side with the front end heavily damaged. Air bags appeared to be deployed. The wreckage appeared to be just off the side of a road on a hillside.

Woods, whose first name is Eldrick, was the sole occupant of the vehicle, the sheriff’s department said.

The crash occurred shortly before 7:15 a.m. Tuesday, officials said.

A Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman said Woods’ representatives would address his injuries.

Lukaku breaks silence on ‘God’ celebration aimed at Zlatan Ibrahimovic

on
 February 24, 2021

Inter Milan striker, Romelu Lukaku, has finally reacted to his ‘God’ celebration reportedly ‘aimed’ at AC Milan’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Recall that tensions between Lukaku and Ibrahimovic have raged since a clash in last month’s Coppa Italia, during which both strikers nearly came to blows.

Inter Milan thrashed their rivals AC Milan 3-0 in a Serie A derby clash at San Siro last Sunday and Lukaku scored their third goal.

The 27-year-old ran to the corner flag and shouted: “Dio, diooo,” which means God, in reference to Ibrahimovic, who has frequently referred to himself as a ‘God’ throughout his illustrious career.

However, the Belgium international has now addressed the drama in a Twitter Q&A with fans on Tuesday night.

Lukaku, who remained quiet on what was actually said, admitted that he might have got a little carried away during the derby clash.

When asked by a fan, @SheikhSadio, “What did u say after scoring the 3rd goal vs Milan #askLukaku.”

Lukaku replied, “Man, I talked a lot of shit, adrenaline, I guess.”

Meanwhile, reacting to AC Milan’s defeat against Inter Milan, Ibrahimovic told his teammates that ‘there are still many games to go,’ adding that they have to raise their heads to go stronger.

Chelsea boss, Thomas Tuchel has said it does not matter whether he signs a long or short term contract, adding that the club will still sack him if they don’t like him.

Tuchel led Chelsea to a 1-0 win against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League last 16 first leg in Spain on Tuesday night.

The victory means that the German has not tasted defeat as the Blues manager.

The former Paris Saint-Germain manager also revealed that the board of the former Premier League and Champions League holders are demanding that he plays and gets the best out of their two expensive players Kai Havertz and Timo Werner.

Asked about his short term contract, the German said, “It affects me, but in a very positive way,” Tuchel told Ferdinand 5 Live podcast.

“I didn’t like it at first, but after only a matter of minutes, I realised ‘what does it change anyway?’ If they don’t like me, they will sack me even if I have a five-year contract!”

Havertz and Werner arrived at Chelsea last summer with high expectations but they have yet to really show their full potential.

Asked if the Blues board wants more of the players on the field, the former Borussia Dortmund manager said, “The club demands a lot of [Werner and Havertz], and I can understand,” said Tuchel.

“They spent a lot of money, so it’s time to step up and fight for it.”

Haaland to Man United: I’m in touch with Dortmund striker – Solskjaer

 February 24, 2021

Manchester United head coach, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, has suggested that the club are still interested in signing Borussia Dortmund striker, Erling Haaland, this summer.

Solskjaer explained that he keeps in touch with Haaland, who has scored 17 goals in 17 Bundesliga appearances for Dortmund this season.

The Red Devils boss coached Haaland during their time at Molde, where he scored 26 goals in 18 games in all competitions.

Speaking ahead of Man United’s Europa League round of 32 second-leg tie against Real Sociedad on Thursday, Solskjaer said at his pre-match press conference on Wednesday: “I think when you have had kids and players through as a coach you follow them.

“I keep in touch with Erling – it is great to see him become the player he has become.

“He is a Dortmund player, and we wish him well there. Let’s see what life will bring later on.”

He added, “You know I can’t speak about Erling because he’s at Dortmund, and I think it’s disrespectful to talk too much apart from I know him and speak to him.

“Who wasn’t interested in him a year ago? Everyone would say you’d take the best in the world and Erling. He is a top player.

“But for me, with recruitment, we’ve done well. The boy sat next to me [Daniel James], Bruno [Fernandes] as you say, I think the signings I’ve made since I’ve come to the club have all added and contributed to the squad.

“We have to complement what we have in our group with other types of players and also young players. ‘I’m happy with our recruitment model and the processes we go through.”

Former heavyweight boxing champion Andy Ruiz Jr. has stated that Anthony Joshua will lose his eagerly-anticipated heavyweight title unification fight with Tyson Fury.

Fury vs Joshua has been tagged the biggest fight in the history of British boxing, and is now set to take place in the summer, with all belts at stake.

WBC king Fury, known for his skills and masterful body defence has been tipped by many to get the better of the powerful AJ, who once lost to Ruiz Jr in 2019.

Ruiz has now opined that Joshua will lose to Fury.

Ruiz told Little Giant Boxing: “I think that it’s gonna be an interesting fight.

“I kinda see Tyson Fury winning that fight.

I wasn’t too impressed with Anthony Joshua’s last performance, but he got the job done.

“I think maybe Tyson Fury might get him, depends how awkward he is.

“If he boxes – Anthony hasn’t fought anybody that boxes around and moves around, so we’ll see.”

Negotiations over Joshua vs Fury are at an advanced stage and an announcement is imminent.

Former Inter striker, Hernan Crespo, has revealed that he advised the club’s forward, Lautaro Martinez, not to join Barcelona last summer.

Crespo, who is currently the coach of Sao Paulo, said he urged Martinez not to accept Barcelona’s offer but to remain at the Nerazzurri for the 2020/21 season.
Recall that Barcelona was interested in signing Martinez from Inter last summer transfer.
But the Argentine international ended up staying at Antonio Conte’s side.

“I have known Lautaro for a long time,” Crespo told La Gazzetta dello Sport.
“Last summer, I advised him to not accept Barcelona’s offer and stay at Inter, and in the end, I was right.

“Lautaro is lethal in the box, and his moves are always directed to shooting at goal.

“He is strong with his head. He has opportunities, and he faces defenders taller than him.”

Martinez has been impressive for Inter Milan so far this season.

The 23-year-old scored a brace in Inter’s 3-0 victory against rivals AC Milan in the Serie A last Sunday to push Conte’s men on top of the log with four points ahead of the Rossoneri.

LaLiga: Koeman gives Barcelona players Messi warning after Elche win

Barcelona manager, Ronald Koeman, has warned his players that they have to do more in support of Lionel Messi.

Koeman also insisted when he criticized the senior players in his squad earlier in the week, he was not talking about Messi.

Messi scored twice on Wednesday night, as Barca beat Elche 3-0 at home, and took his tally in LaLiga to 18 goals.
Ahead of the game, Koeman had talked about the importance of the club’s experienced players stepping up to save the club’s season.

“When I spoke about the experienced players I was not talking about him.
“He keeps scoring lots of goals. It’s the others that have to start making a difference, not Messi. He is already making a difference and he did it again in this game,” Koeman explained.

Koeman left Antoine Griezmann and Ousmane Dembele on the bench for the game, with the win a perfect response to their 4-1 defeat to PSG in the Champions League last week.

Champions League: Zidane reacts to Real Madrid’s 1-0 win at Atalanta

Real Madrid manager, Zinedine Zidane, has admitted it was difficult to beat 10-man Atalanta in their Champions League last-16 clash on Wednesday night.

Los Blancos came away with a 1-0 away win, with Ferland Mendy scoring a stunning late winner.

Remo Freuler was sent off for the Serie A side in a controversial decision, before Casemiro picked up a booking that will see him miss the second leg.
Madrid were unable to capitalise on their extra man advantage, until Mendy’s late effort went in with five minutes left.

“It was difficult for us. But in the end it’s a good result.

“It’s an important result with an away goal. But we know there’s a return leg and we have to win. It wasn’t easy, even 10 against 11. We played against a very physically strong team who were defensively very good, so it’s a good result,” Zidane said afterwards.

Thierry Henry quits as manager of MLS side Montreal Impact, says the role was having too much impact on his family

Thierry Henry has quit his job as manager of Montreal Impact in Canada, stating that the role was having too much impact on his family.

The Arsenal legend took charge of the MLS club ahead of the 2020 season but stated that the coronavirus pandemic has made it impossible to continue. He added that he will be moving back to London.

'It is with a heavy heart that I've decided to take this decision,' Henry said in a club statement.

'The last year has been an extremely difficult one for me personally. Due to the worldwide pandemic, I was unable to see my children. Unfortunately due to the ongoing restrictions and the fact that we will have to relocate to the US again for several months will be no different.

'The separation is too much of a strain for me and my kids. Therefore, it is with much sadness that I must take the decision to return to London and leave CF Montreal.

'I would like to thank the fans, players and all the staff of this Club that have made me feel so welcome.

'I would also like to thank Kevin Gilmore, Olivier Renard and of course Joey and all of the Saputo family for giving me this wonderful opportunity.

'We had an impossible year together and to make the playoffs with this group of people is an experience that I will never forget. Thank you all for being there on this journey and I wish you all the success for the future.'

The club's sporting director admitted his regret at seeing the exit of the 43-year-old.

'Thierry's departure is unfortunate and premature because this was very promising, but he informed me of his desire to be back with his family because the situation was and remains very difficult for both him and his family,' Olivier Renard said.

'I want to thank him, first on a human level because he led the players by example last year by being away from his family, but also from a sporting level and for what we have built together since his arrival.'

Henry was recently linked with taking over at Championship side Bournemouth following the sacking of Jason Tindall. But missed out to caretaker manager Jonathan Woodgate, who was named as interim boss until the end of the season after guiding the club to three wins in their first five games.
