Minneapolis city council vow to disband police department in historic move - Edoman - 06-08-2020 Minneapolis city council vow to disband police department in historic move The Minneapolis city council has pledged to disband the Minneapolis police department and replace it with a new system of public safety.   The historic move comes as calls to defund law enforcement are sweeping the US following the killing of George Floyd and other black people who died due to police brutality.   Speaking at a community rally on Sunday, June 7, a majority of councilmembers declared their intent to "dismantle" and "abolish" the Minneapolis police department responsible for George Floyd’s death and build an alternative model of community-led safety.     The decision is a direct response to the massive protests that have been taking place in American cities in the last two weeks. It is also a major victory for abolitionist activists who have long fought to disband police and prisons.   Speaking at the event, Lisa Bender, the Minneapolis city council president, said: "In Minneapolis and in cities across the US, it is clear that our system of policing is not keeping our communities safe,. Our efforts at incremental reform have failed, period. Our commitment is to do what’s necessary to keep every single member of our community safe and to tell the truth: that the Minneapolis police are not doing that. Our commitment is to end policing as we know it and to recreate systems of public safety that actually keep us safe."     "This is a moment that’s going to go down in history as a landmark in the police and prison abolition movement," said Tony Williams, a member of MPD150, a Minneapolis group whose literature on building a "police-free future”" has been widely shared during the protests. "There’s a groundswell of support for this. People are grounded in the history of policing in a way that has never happened before. It’s visible that police are not able to create safety for communities."   According to The Guardian, the councilmembers are expected to face opposition from law enforcement officials and the police union, though activists emphasize that the veto-proof majority has the authority to move forward regardless of opposition.    On Saturday, June 6,  Minneapolis mayor, Jacob Frey, was booed at a demonstration when he wouldn’t commit to abolishing the police. Protesters shouted, "Go home, Jacob!" and "Shame!" until he left.     RE: Minneapolis city council vow to disband police department in historic move - Edoman - 06-08-2020 Black Lives Matter protesters in England destroy a more than 100-year-old statue honoring slave trader, Edward Colton, following the killing of George Floyd (video) Black Lives Matter demonstrators in England have taken down a more than 100-year-old statue commemorating a slave trader.   The memorial honoring merchant slave trader Edward Colston was destroyed by the crowd in Bristol while protesting the murder of George Floyd. They used ropes to remove the bronze statue of Edward Colton from its base. Protesters then dragged it to the River Avon and threw it in the water, where it quickly sank.   The statue had been a fixture in Bristol since 1895, as a tribute to Colton, who traded approximately 84,000 African men, women, and children to the Caribbean and North America.     There have been a number of petitions demanding the statue be dismantled, however, nothing was done, so the demonstrators decided to take matters it into their own hands.       b RE: Minneapolis city council vow to disband police department in historic move - Edoman - 06-08-2020 White cops and civilians kneel to wash the feet of Black protesters and beg for forgiveness for years of racism (video) A group of white police officers and other civilians in Cary, North Carolina, came together to wash the feet of black protesters while asking for forgiveness for years of racism.   In a video shared online by Fabiola Doissaint, the white members of the community are seen cleaning the feet of black religious leaders, while a man says a prayer into a megaphone to repent for their sins and historical involvement in slavery and oppression against African-Americans.   The man holding the megaphone, while praying, acknowledged that there’s only one race of people. He then asked for forgiveness for their white ancestors enslaving, mistreating and oppressing African-Americans.   However, not everyone was impressed with this. Some people reacted to the video, stating that the action of the White people was shameful.
