Chelsea coach Frank Lampard sends ‘cut-throat’ warning to his players ahead of Champions League opener against Sevilla

Chelsea Football Club boss, Frank Lampard has issued a fire warning to his star players as he guides his team to their 2020-21 Champions League campaign opener against Sevilla at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday October 18.

Lampard led his side to the last 16 last season, before they were humiliated by eventual winners Bayern Munich.

Chelsea were the biggest spenders in this season's transfer window and Lampard says that all of those at his disposal, old and young, need to appreciate just how tough European competition can be.

Lampard speaking to Chelsea's official website: “The players that were here last year, and talking about the young players particularly in the Bayern Munich games because of the strong opposition, it would have been a learning curve for them.

“That’s the Champions League; it’s the top club competition in world football. They will be better for it; they will want to improve this year in that. We will see how much they have learned.

“Of the players we have brought in, some have more Champions League experience than others.

“We generally have younger players so it’s important we try and make sure we learn any lessons as we go because the Champions League is so cut-throat.
“You have to have absolute focus because of the level of teams you’re playing, and particularly as we start against Sevilla.”

Thiago Silva, Timo Werner, Kai Havertz and Hakim Ziyech and Ben Chilwell are among the new players Chelsea has bought.

Uefa say 'final eight' format may return for 2024 Champions and Europa Leagues

UEFA has admitted it could change to a ‘final eight’ format for the Champions League and Europa League from 2024.

The format proved to be a big hit as the single-country, one-leg format was used to conclude last season’s competition in a campaign hugely disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic.

UEFA this season announced it will revert to the regular two-legged system for quarter-finals and semi-finals for the rest of this season, but has not ruled out a change to the format beyond that.

Giorgio Marchetti, UEFA’s deputy general secretary, said: “A good rule is to never exclude something which proves valuable or has potential.

“We know there are many elements that need to be taken into account, such as calendar and organisational constraints, fans’ involvement, economic implications, but we will for sure study this format and its variations for our upcoming discussions.
“Single knock-out matches obviously favour uncertainty and emotions.

“We received great feedback from clubs, broadcasters and other partners as well as from the fans. The circumstances made this format a must, but the result could not be better as well as the degree of satisfaction.”

The 2019/20 Champions League’s final stages took place in Lisbon, while the German cities of Cologne, Duisburg, Dusseldorf and Gelsenkirchen hosted the conclusion of the Europa League.

Marchetti admitted that staging all European competitions had been the result of great co-operation between all clubs and league associations.

“The football community really worked together: without the joint work and unity of intents with national associations, leagues and clubs nothing would have been achieved,” he said.

“And as we had only two months to set up simultaneous tournaments in Portugal, Germany and Spain, the local federations and authorities supported us massively.”

He said UEFA would take the same ‘strong determination’ that helped them pull off the final stages of last season’s competitions into the rest of 2020/21, which is taking place against the backdrop of a second wave of coronavirus infections across the continent.

“Everybody watched the final eight tournaments in August. What almost nobody knows is that from the beginning of August almost 500 UEFA matches have already been played,” he said.

“All the qualification rounds to Champions League and Europa League (no one single club was excluded from the access list), two men’s and one women’s international windows, under-21s.

“There are many restrictions and a strict protocol to apply with an incredible number of tests on all teams, but these difficulties don’t scare us.”

Sergio Aguero will not face any penalty after touching female referee during premier league match against Arsenal

Manchester City striker, Sergio Aguero will not face any penalty from the football association after he touched assistant referee/lineswoman Sian Massey-Ellis during his side’s win against Arsenal.

On Saturday October 17, Aguero was caught on camera placing his hand on assistant referee Massey-Ellis’ shoulder during the first half of the game at the Etihad.

Touching a match official is usually punished by a yellow card, unless the physical approach is deemed aggressive in which case the player will be shown a red card. But Aguero's actions went unpunished and he will not face any retrospective action over the incident.

As well as simply breaching the laws of the game by touching a match official, Aguero was also accused on Twitter of controlling her and exhibiting sexist behaviour due to the lineswoman’s gender.

Pep Guardiola later defended his player as ‘the nicest person he's ever met in his life’.

The manager said of Aguero: “Come on guys. Sergio is the nicest person I ever met in my life. Look for problems in other situations, not in this one.”

However, former Premier League referee Mark Halsey said he thought Massey-Ellis handled the situation very well.
“Only Sian and Aguero know what went on in,” he told talkSPORT.

“Sian felt there was no further action required, so maybe she thought ‘okay, there’s no problem, it’s part of the game’.

“If there was anything untoward or insulting language used or she felt something wasn’t right, then Sian would have called the referee over.”

Asked if she felt under pressure not to call the referee over given her gender, Halsey reiterated his belief that Messey-Ellis would not have been intimidated saying if she felt intimidated by Aguero then she would have brought it to the referee’s attention.

“I’ve worked with Sian on a few occasions and she’s an excellent assistant referee. There’s no doubt that if she had felt intimidated then she would have called the referee over and had Aguero either cautioned or dismissed from the field of play.” Halsey said

Champions League: Solskjaer reveals why he dropped Pogba for 2-1 win at PSG

on
 October 21, 2020
[Image: Paul-Pogba.jpg]

Manchester United manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, has given reasons he left Paul Pogba out of his starting XI for their Champions League win at Paris Saint-Germain.

Solskjaer opted for Fred and Scott McTominay behind Bruno Fernandes in midfield for their 2-1 victory.
According to the Norwegian, he wanted the duo to “lay the foundation” for the side.

Fernandes gave United the lead from the penalty spot, before PSG equalized thanks to Anthony Martial’s own goal.

Pogba was left out of the starting XI for the second straight game, having also been benched against Newcastle, but made a big impact in his cameo against PSG.

The Frenchman created more chances than any other player, as United eventually found the winner through Marcus Rashford.

When asked his reason behind the Fred and McTominay starting, Solskjaer explained: “They’re in good form now, they’re good players and they played really well against Newcastle.

“They laid the foundations for the win in that game, and I think they laid the foundation today as well.

“Scotty played the first half as well with only one eye, that was the most impressive thing, because he lost his contact lens. So that was impressive.”

Barcelona captain, Lionel Messi, has become the first player to score in 16 straight Champions League campaigns.

Messi was on target as they thrashed Ferencvaros 5-1 on Tuesday night.

The 33-year-old converted from the penalty spot after being fouled in the area in the first half.

Messi is only the second player to score in 16 Champions League seasons overall, along with Manchester United’s Ryan Giggs.

Ansu Fati added a goal just before half-time, to give the LaLiga side a comfortable lead at Camp Nou.

Fati made history of his own with the goal, becoming the first player to ever score more than once in the Champions League before his 18th birthday.

Paris Saint-Germain manager, Thomas Tuchel, has described their 2-1 defeat to Manchester United, as one of their worst games ever.

Bruno Fernandes gave the Red Devils the lead in the 23rd minute from the penalty.

The Ligue 1 champions were level thanks to Anthony Martial’s goal 10 minutes into the second half.

However, Marcus Rashford struck the winner late in the game, to ensure United took all three points.
“In the first half, we were simply not on the pitch. It was not our level.

“I don’t know why, but I can just say that it was not our level, in moving the ball, in possession, in counter-attacking, in challenges, in intensity.

“By far, one of our worst games, one of our worst first halves,” Tuchel told beIN SPORTS

The protesters didn’t ask for war, just for a better Nigeria" - Chelsea football star, Antonio Rüdiger reacts to Lekki tollgate gun attack

Chelsea defender, Antonio Rüdiger has reacted to the Lekki tollgate gun attack after peaceful #EndSARS protesters were allegedly killed on Tuesday night, October 20.

In his tweets, the German International said he's shocked how the situation got out of control after putting out a statement last week condemning police brutality in Nigeria.

The center-back also stated that the situation in Nigeria has nothing to do with democracy as he noted that it's more like a military rule which he says is a violation of human rights at the highest order.

The defender wrote:

Quote:After my short statement about Nigeria already last week I’m now even more shocked about how the situation there has got more and more out of control. This saddens me so much. This has absolutely nothing to do with democracy.

It is more like a military rule and it's a violation of human rights at the highest order. President@mbuhari and the Nigerian Army, stop killing peaceful young protesters. Stop killing the people you are supposed to protect.

Guti said this following Real Madrid’s Champions League 3-2 loss to Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday.

Real Madrid were defeated at home against Shakhtar Donetsk, after three goals from Tete, Raphael Varane, (OG) and Manor Solomon.

Luka Modric and Vinicius Junior did score for the La Liga champions.

“I would sign Neymar and Kylian Mbappe for Real Madrid,” Guti was quoted by Goal as saying.

“It won’t determine who will win La Liga, but it is an important match,” Guti added.

“Mentally, if a player does well or a team wins, then it can do you good for what is still to come in La Liga.”

Real Madrid will face Barcelona this weekend in the La Liga El Clasico match.

Champions League: Zidane reveals who is responsible for Real Madrid’s 3-2 defeat to Shakhtar

on
 October 22, 2020
[Image: zinedine_zidane_3.jpg]

Real Madrid manager, Zinedine Zidane, has taken full responsibility for their 3-2 defeat in the Champions League.

Los Blancos began their campaign this season with a home loss to Shakhtar Donetsk.

Zidane described it as “a bad game, a bad night” and vowed to “find the solution” ahead of their LaLiga clash against Barcelona on Saturday.

Madrid trailed 3-0 at the Alfredo di Stefano stadium, before Luka Modric and Vinicius Junior pulled back two goals the second half.

The result means Zidane’s team have lost twice at home in four days, after being beaten 1-0 by newly-promoted Cadiz.

“We made a mistake with the first goal, and then we lacked confidence. It’s just as well my players reacted in the second half. It’s a bad game, a bad night. I’m the coach, I have to find the solution, I didn’t find it tonight.”

“We know the situation we’re in. It’s our second bad game. Now we have to prepare our next game. It’s clear that I’m responsible,” Zidane told reporters after the ame.

Chelsea Vs. Sevilla: Three significant lessons from UEFA Champions League draw

on
 October 21, 2020

The London side was held to a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea missed out on the chance to generate team confidence ahead of the next game.

The Blues squandered a couple of goal scoring chances despite the talent they have got in their ranks just as the Sevilla side.

It finished in a stalemate as Frank Lampard and his side endured another difficult evening of football at home.

With Sevilla snatching the draw away from Chelsea, Daily Post evaluates the three (3) significant points from the UEFA Champions League match at Stamford Bridge.

More headache for Frank Lampard

Chelsea 3-3 draw with Southampton wouldn’t be the last of the Blues below-par performance in the season as they endured another barren draw at home with Sevilla.

This result will not go down well with the former Chelsea midfielder though they somehow managed to stage a comeback to draw 3-3 with the newly-promoted side West Bromwich Albion.

It will be a huge problem for Lampard as it will constitute some selection headache ahead of the next games in the season for the Chelsea side.

Sevilla deserves the credit

The Sevilla outfit did a great job of holding the home side at home in the contest. They were outstanding on the UEFA Champions League night as they ensured that Chelsea couldn’t bridge their defence.

The draw earned at Stamford Bridge is a positive tonic for the Spanish side ahead in the season.

That result could affirm the progress the La Liga side have been making in recent years, while they tamed the threat coming from the likes of Kai Havertz, Mason Mount and Timo Werner in transition.

They duly deserve all the credit they can get pertaining to their display in this game as they caused Chelsea all sorts of problems going forward as well in the Contest in Europe.

Improvements beckon for chelsea

The London side may have been in dismal form in recent weeks but must rise up to the occasion in order to revive their season ambitions.

Drawing 3-3 on two different occasions with sides like West Bromwich Albion and Southampton signifies the problem within the Chelsea side and the cogent need for improved defensive correlation at the Chelsea Football club.

While also as their 0-0 outing against Sevilla defines the urgency with which Frank Lampard needs to find the balance eluding this Chelsea side.

This is needful at the moment even as they get set to face the rejuvenated Manchester United side who have claimed back-to-back impressive away win against both Newcastle United and Paris Saint-Germain in the space of three days.

Arteta Excludes Ozil Totally From The Arsenal Squad, Says "I Failed With Ozil"

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta says he feels he has "failed" with midfielder Mesut Ozil after leaving him out of his 25-man Premier League squad.

The German, who had also been omitted from the Europa League squad, can now only play for Arsenal Under-23s until his deal expires in summer 2021.

The 32-year-old, who joined Arsenal for a then club record £42.4m in 2013, has not played for the club since 7 March.

"My conscience is very calm because I have been really fair," said Arteta.

"What I can say from my side is that it is just a football decision. My level of communication with him has been really high and we know what to expect with each other.

"Obviously a player of that dimension, with the career he has had, everything that happens around him has a big impact. It has been the case for the last eight years, it is nothing new that is just happening now. A lot of things have happened over these eight years.

"My job is to get the best out of every player, to contribute to the team performance.

"Here I feel at the moment, today, that I have failed. I want the best possible Mesut for the team. And in some moments I was able to get close to that, and at the moment I have not been able to do it because I have to make the decision to leave him out of the squad."

'Loyalty is hard to come by nowadays' - Ozil
Earlier, in a message to Arsenal fans, Ozil said "loyalty is hard to come by nowadays".

"I'm really deeply disappointed by the fact that I have not been registered for the Premier League season for the time being," Ozil wrote on social media.

"Upon signing my new contract in 2018, I pledged my loyalty and allegiance to the club that I love, Arsenal, and it saddens me that this has not been reciprocated.

"I've always tried to remain positive from week to week that there's maybe a chance to get back in the squad soon again. That's why I kept silent so far."

Since joining from Real Madrid seven years ago, Ozil has scored 44 goals in 254 appearances in all competitions for the Gunners.

He fell out of favour under previous manager Unai Emery before returning to the side under interim boss Freddie Ljungberg.

After Arteta's appointment in December 2019, Ozil started all 10 of Arsenal's Premier League games immediately before the coronavirus pandemic forced a three-month suspension of the top-flight in March.

Earlier in October, he offered to pay the salary of Jerry Quy, the man who plays the role of club mascot Gunnersaurus, who was one of 55 redundancies at the club.

"Before the coronavirus break I was really happy with my development under our new coach Mikel Arteta - we've been on a positive way and I would say my performances were on a really good level," Ozil added.

"But then things changed, again, and I was no longer allowed to play football for Arsenal. No matter what, I will keep fighting for my chance and not let my eighth season at Arsenal end like this.

"I can promise you that this hard decision won't change anything in my mindset - I will continue to train as best as I can and wherever possible use my voice against inhumanity and for justice."

Former Arsenal and England striker Ian Wright said he was "gutted" for Ozil.

"Football will never stop surprising me," he said on Twitter.

"The fact that whatever has gone on couldn't be resolved between the club and Mesut is sad. Sad for everyone involved and I can only send him strength for what will be a difficult few months knowing he won't even have a chance to play. Gutted."

#EndSARS: John Ogu tells Super Eagles players to boycott AFCON qualifiers in solidarity with protests

Nigeria international midfielder, John Ogu has called on his teammates in the Super Eagles to boycott their upcoming African Cup Of Nations games in protest against the Federal government as a reaction to the shootings of unarmed protesters at the Lekki Toll gate on Tuesday night, October 20.

On Tuesday, October 20, security operatives shot at protesters at Lekki toll gate in Lagos, which has generated wide condemnation across the world.

Nigeria will take on Sierra Leone in 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in November in Benin and Ogu, 32, has  called for his teammates not to honour the clash, in solidarity with #endSARS protests happening in the country.

Ogu, who has 26 caps for the Super Eagles, said to the World Football show on BBC World Service radio.

“What is the point in representing the country if this is what the politicians, the people we’re representing, can do to us?”
“I feel like this is the best thing to do right now until they get back to their senses and listen to us.

“We want a good government, the police brutality to stop, we want the SARS to stop, we want the killings to stop, we want good laws, we want job opportunities. It’s just crazy.

“I believe most of my colleagues understand where I am coming from, I wish we can do this. There are games coming up and if we boycott these games I’m sure they will know we’ve made a statement.

“I haven’t really spoken to any of my team-mates about this. They feel for the people here, their loved ones, those that have died. I’m sure the players are aware.”

Manchester City boss, Pep Guardiola, has said that his team failed to beat West Ham United in today’s Premier League clash because his players couldn’t convert their chances at the end of the encounter against the host.

Guardiola also said that five of his players were affected with COVID-19, adding that Man City didn’t have time for regeneration before the West Ham clash.
Man City and West Ham played a 1-1 draw at the London Stadium following two goals from Michail Antonio Phil Foden.

“The reality is we had four of five guys with COVID-19. We didn’t have time for regeneration,” Guardiola was quoted by Man City’s official website as saying at post-match.

“Our striker (Gabriel Jesus) was injured in the first game. Sergio was out for four months. Kevin was injured. Gundogan came back from COVID-19.

“We started really well. We conceded a goal from the first action they had. After we struggled in the first half. We couldn’t find the pass.

“We had chances at the end, three or four that we couldn’t convert.

“Now we recover and think of the next game in the Champions League (away to Marseille).”

Quote:Ajax Beats VVV-Venlo 13 - 0, Lassina Traore Scores Five

Dutch giants Ajax recorded the biggest victory in Eredivisie history with a 13-0 thrashing at mid-table side VVV-Venlo, who had a player sent off.

Ajax, who lost 1-0 to Liverpool in the Champions League on Wednesday, surpassed their previous record - a 12-1 win over Vitesse in 1972.

Teenager Lassina Traore scored five, while Jurgen Ekkelenkamp, 20, and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, 37, scored twice.

Dusan Tadic, Antony, Daley Blind and Lisandro Martinez scored the rest.

Defender Christian Kum, 35, was sent off for VVV-Venlo in the second half with the team already trailing 4-0.

Burkina Faso international Traore, 19, scored the most goals in a Dutch top-flight match since September 2019, when Donyell Malen netted the same amount for PSV Eindhoven against Vitesse.

He also became the first Ajax player to record five goals in an Eredivisie match since Marco van Basten in 1985 (six) and the first from the club to record three assists in a league match since Frenkie de Jong in 2017.

Traore was two goals short of the Eredivisie record set by former Middlesbrough striker Afonso Alves, who scored seven for Heerenveen against Heracles in October 2007.

In terms of biggest winning margins, Ajax's victory on Saturday was not only the largest in Eredivisie history, but joint-second in the club's history in all competitions.

Ajax's biggest win was back in 1984 when they hammered Differdange 14-0 in the Europa League (previously the Uefa Cup).

It was the first time in a decade that any team were able to score at least 10 goals in a single Eredivisie game since PSV recorded a 10-0 win over Feyenoord.

On a day to forget for VVV-Venlo, it was the biggest defeat in the club's history, surpassing the previous record which was a 10-1 loss to FC Eindhoven in the Eerste Divisie in 1964.

In the Eredivisie, their previous heaviest defeats were by seven-goal margins to Ajax, Heracles Almelo and AZ Alkmaar.

EPL: Lampard questions VAR officials after Chelsea’s 0-0 draw with Man Utd

Chelsea manager, Frank Lampard, was left furious after his side was not awarded a penalty, after Manchester United defender, Harry Maguire pulled down Cesar Azpilicueta during a corner kick in Saturday’s 0-0 draw.

Maguire bear-hugged the Spaniard in the 40th minute and although the Blues called for a penalty, neither the referee nor VAR decided to award a spot kick.

After the game, Lampard said he did not know why VAR was not consulted.

“Yeah, holding is allowed, but headlocks don’t go on,” he told BBC Match of the Day.

“I don’t know why VAR didn’t take long and there’s also a monitor to look at. I think if the referee goes to the monitor he gives a penalty.
