Barcelona agree personal terms with Depay

Barcelona have agreed on personal terms with Lyon captain, Memphis Depay.

This was revealed by respected Italian sports journalist, Fabrizio Romano, via his Twitter handle on Wednesday afternoon.

Romano tweeted,” Memphis Depay have agreed on personal terms with Barcelona after contacts started days ago.

“But the final agreement is still to be reached between Barça and OL – talks ongoing.”

DAILY POST recalls that Depay had been linked with a move to Barcelona in the past few days.

The 26-year-old tops Barcelona’s list of players that will replace Luis Suarez when the former Liverpool hitman eventually leaves the Camp Nou.

Speaking about the possibility of him leaving Lyon this summer, Depay said last month: “I do not see the future, I do not know if I’ll do the full season here. I’ve been here for four years, and I became a captain.

“After you’ve to look at your career, there is no Champions League. At the moment, I do not know.”

Victor Osimhen 'turned down Manchester United transfer before joining Napoli because he didn't want to compete with Odion Ighalo,' his brother reveals

Victor Osimhen's brother has revealed he turned down a potential move to Manchester United before joining Napoli for £54million.

The 21-year-old promising striker moved to the Italian club from Lille earlier this summer in the big-money deal, which made him Nigeria's most expensive player.

Speaking in a new interview with Complete Sports, his brother, Andrew Osimhen disclosed that United were interested in signing him, but since his fellow Nigerian Odion Ighalo is already at Old Trafford, Victor decided not to make the move out of respect.

'It is very true that Manchester United wanted Victor but he told me something like he had too much respect for Odion Ighalo to be competing for shirts with his senior colleague,' Andrew said.

'My brother holds Ighalo in high esteem and he just didn't see himself going to Old Trafford to battle for a striking role with the highest goalscorer at the 2019 AFCON in Egypt.'

Ighalo joined United on loan from Shanghai Shenhua in January and his deal with the club has been extended until the next year.

Osimhen was linked with a number of Premier League clubs but ended up joining Napoli.

Victor Moses contributes over £400,000 to former club Wigan, amid financial challenges due to Coronavirus pandemic

Chelsea star footballer, Victor Moses, has made a significant donation to support his former club, Wigan Athletic amid their financial struggles during the pandemic.

Wigan were deducted 12 points after going into administration towards the end of the 2019-20 season, which forced them into relegation alongside Hull City and Charlton Athletic.

Moses played for the Latics before joining Chelsea in 2012.

The club's supporters body has confimed that the former Super Eagles player has made a significant financial contribution to the club that'll stop them from going into extinction.

The supporters are aiming to raise £750,000 to support the club this season, and they are now within £100,000 of the target after Moses sent money.

“Wow – what can we say? When Victor got in touch to say he wanted to help by donating such a substantial amount, I just couldn’t believe what I was hearing – it’s such an incredible gesture,” , the chairperson of Wigan Athletic Supporters' Club, Caroline Molyneux, said.

“Victor wanted to make the donation and remain anonymous but we simply had to make sure he gets the recognition he deserves.

"Victor’s contribution has taken us past £650,000 and to within £100,000 of our next target of £750,000.

“We are so thankful to Victor for his support. He is an excellent footballer, a true role model and someone we always enjoyed watching at the DW Stadium – he will always be welcome back here, even more so now!”

Moses, took to his Twitter handle to call for more support to save the future of the 2013 FA Cup winners.

“Wigan Athletic will always have a special place in my heart,” Moses tweeted.

“I have so many incredible memories from my time there and the people of Wigan and everyone associated with the club have always been so good to me and my family. We must do all we can to protect the future of this great club.”

Manchester United have completed the signing of Atletico Madrid striker, Alejandro Garnacho.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Man United and Atletico Madrid have agreed to a deal that will allow Garnacho arrive in Manchester from Spain later this week.

Garnacho, 16, will then be quarantined for 14 days as part of the COVID-19 protocols before he will join the Red Devils academy.

This will make Garnacho the club’s third signing from Spain following the arrival of Marc Jurado from Barcelona and Alvaro Fernandez from Real Madrid.

Jurado, 16, and Fernandez, 17, arrived in Manchester from Spain last month and have been quarantining.

However, Man United are yet to confirm the signing of the duo formally.

Chelsea confirm shirt numbers for Havertz, Thiago Silva, Ziyech, Chilwell

on
 September 10, 2020
[Image: Chelsea.jpg]

Chelsea have confirmed squad numbers for the 2020/2021 season.

This includes for the five new signings the Blues have already made this summer.

Hakim Ziyech arrived first from Ajax and has been handed the no. 22 shirt. He inherits it from Christian Pulisic, who is the new no. 10.

Pedro’s departure has freed up the No.11 for Timo Werner, who Chelsea bought from RB Leipzig.

The number has most famously been worn by Didier Drogba, Oscar, Damien Duff, Boudewijn Zenden and Dennis Wise.

Thiago Silva has been handed the No.6 shirt by Frank Lampard. The former PSG skipper has mostly worn the No.2 or No.3 throughout his career, both of which are taken by Antonio Rudiger and Marcos Alonso respectively.

Similarly, left-back Ben Chilwell wore the No.3 for Leicester City, but has had to switch to the No.21, which has most recently been worn by Davide Zappacosta

PSG offer Arsenal Draxler in exchange for Guendouzi

on
 September 10, 2020

Paris Saint-Germain have offered Julian Draxler in exchange for Arsenal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi, L’Equipe reports.

Guendouzi is out of favour at the Emirates, following a number of disciplinary issues under Mikel Arteta.

The French midfielder was frozen out after the Gunners’ 2-1 defeat at Brighton in June, in which he taunted some opposition players about how much they earn.

His future at the Emirates looks bleak and the club wants to move him on for a fee around £30million.

PSG are mulling a possible move for the 21-year-old, who came through their academy before leaving for Lorient in 2014 and could offer Draxler in return.

Draxler has entered the final 12 months of his contract with the Ligue 1 champions and PSG are keen to sell him rather than lose him for free next summer.

Chelsea legend, Michael Essien joins Danish club Nordsjaelland as player-coach ahead of the new season

Former Chelsea midfielder, Michael Essien has joined Danish club Nordsjaelland as a player-coach for the 2020-21 season.

The 37-year-old Ghanaian footballer agreed to assist head coach Flemming Pedersen for the coming campaign.

According to the club, Essien will join the staff in an assistant role and participate in training sessions alongside the players to help implement the drills and ideas. In addition, the former Lyon and Real Madrid player will contribute to video analysis and 'group evaluations' following each training session.

Essien, who will start his duties on Thursday, took to social media to share his delight as he prepares to achieve his coaching qualifications at the club.

'I am delighted to have joined FC Nordsjaelland coaching staff as part of my development towards my full coaching licence,' he said.

'I will also be assisting the players on and off the pitch as part of my role.'

The club's sports director Jan Laursen also shared his excitement about Essien's appointment, saying: 'Michael left a very positive impression here during his visit and we continued the dialogue with him after he had left.

'We felt, he was excited by what he experienced here through our philosophy, the people he met at the club, and that our environment inspired him.

'At the same time, Michael's visit gave us a clear impression of how much a coaching staff member on the pitch, as an active part of the training with the players, can contribute and add.

'That part we are really looking forward to further developing, and we are very happy that it can happen through and with such a football- and human capacity as Michael Essien is.'

Head coach Pedersen said:'In the coaching staff we've experienced Michael Essien as both curious and hungry for knowledge before and after the training sessions, but at the same time also contributing and giving among the players during the training', he said.

'His career and experience speak for themselves, but when you add his humble and giving personality, this is an exceptional opportunity for us to get a person added to the staff who can help make our environment even more developing for our players and also add valuable input to the coaching team and be our hand on the training pitch. We are very much looking forward to welcoming Michael to FCN.'

Micheal Essien who joined Chelsea from Lyon in 2005 in a £24.4million deal, spent nine successful years at Stamford Bridge, winning the Champions League, two Premier League titles, four FA Cups, and a League Cup before leaving in 2014

Lampard reacts to Mount being ‘unhappy’ about Havertz’s arrival

on
 September 10, 2020
[Image: lampard-1.jpg]

Chelsea manager, Frank Lampard, has rubbished speculations claiming Mason Mount is unhappy with the £72million signing of Kai Havertz.

Havertz moved to Stamford Bridge last week on a five-year deal.

The 21-year-old enjoyed another fine with Bayer Leverkusen last season with 18 goals and nine assists.
His arrival at Chelsea is likely to limit Mount’s game time, as the duo occupy similar areas of the pitch.

“I saw the story about Mason Mount and I know it was absolutely fabricated from someone, particularly if it came from the German end,” Lampard told a press conference on Thursday.

“I will be fair on how I pick the team. I won’t pick the team on whether you came from the academy. I will pick the team on how I think it should be picked every week, how they train and how they have been performing.”

Serena Williams knocked out of the US Open by Victoria Azarenka...

Serena Williams' quest to land her 24th Grand Slam singles title came to a stunning end after Victoria Azarenka defeated her in the semi-finals of the US Open in the early hours of Friday morning.

The American won the first set 6-1 but her Belarusian opponent won the last two sets 6-3 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center to set up US Open final showdown with Naomi Osaka.

Williams, who has been stuck on 23 Grand Slam titles since winning the 2017 Australian Open, was hindered by a jarred ankle in the final set.

She explained that the defeat was "obviously disappointing" as her quest to equal Margaret Court's record of 24 grand slam singles titles goes on.

"At the same time ... I did what I could today," she added. "I feel like other times I've been close and I could have done better. Today I felt like I gave a lot."

Azarenka, 31, said her mental game had been crucial in beating the 38-year-old Williams.

"I have been working on finding a calm mind and keep the body going," the Belarusian said in an on-court interview. "She dug me in a big hole in the first set. I needed to find energy to climb out of the hole and it wasn't easy."

Azarenka will play Japan's Naomi Osaka on Saturday in her third final at Flushing Meadows.

Lionel Messi suspension reversed ahead of World Cup qualifiers, following intervention of Argentine FA president

The president of the Argentine Football Association, Claudio Tapia, has confirmed superstar footballer, Lionel Messi won't miss any games for his country as the result of a red card handed out to him in the 2019 Copa America.

Messi was controversially sent off in a Copa America third-place playoff against Chile in July last year and was handed a one game ban.

Messi had been shown a red card following a clash with Gary Medel in the 37th minute. The decision to send off Messi annoyed him as he claimed Brazil was cheating in the competition.
"There is no doubt, the whole thing is set up for Brazil," he said.
"I hope the VAR and referees don't play any part in the final and that Peru can compete but it looks tough to me.
"I did not want to be part of this corruption, we shouldn't have to be part of this disrespect we suffered during the Copa America.
"We could have gone further but we weren't allowed into the final. Corruption, referees and all the rest stopped people from enjoying the football.
"I always tell the truth and I'm honest, that is what keeps me calm, if what I say has repercussions that is not my business.
"I think that what happened is because of what I said [against Brazil]. What I said last time perhaps came back to haunt me."

The South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) earlier said Messi would have to sit out a competitive match, but ahead of World Cup qualifiers against Ecuador and Bolivia next month, FA president Tapia has successfully challenged the outstanding ban stating that the statute of limitations on the ban had expired.

The Argentine FA took to their official Twitter handle to announce the news on Friday September 11.

Messi will now feature for Argentina against Ecuador and Bolivia.

'I need an anchor to sort out my life' - Chelsea player, Danny Drinkwater opens up on his struggles after club snubs him ahead of new season

Chelsea midfielder, Danny Drinkwater has opened up on his struggles after the club snubbed him ahead of the new premier league season.

Drinkwater, who moved to Chelsea following a successful 2015-16 Premier League season where he won the league with Leicester, has experienced downtimes since his move to Stamford Bridge.

He has failed to become a regular player at the club and suffered scandals last season.

Apart from a drink-driving charge and an incident in a nightclub, he headbutted a team-mate while on loan at Aston Villa, and now the 30 year old has been snubbed by the club as Chelsea opted not to assign him a number for the coming campaign with new signing, Thiago Silva taking Drinkwater's former number six jersey.

Drinkwater has now vowed to 'clean himself up'

"I have taken a good look at myself loads of times," Drinkwater told the Telegraph. "I told myself that I needed to clean myself up big time.

"I had a wake-up call after the drink-driving, another wake-up call after the nightclub and then another wake-up call after the incident at Villa. Then it's like, this has got to stop.
"I won't use Chelsea as an excuse for the drink-driving. Obviously, my mental state wasn't the best, but it was ridiculous and it should never have happened.

"There were a few things going on then away from football, my nan and grandad passed away quite close together and, this might sound daft to anyone who doesn't have a dog, but my dog passed away and that hurt me. It was all part of the sticky patch.

"For everything to come in a short space of time with my career not going to plan was too much for me. It hit me."

Though contracted to Chelsea until 2022, Drinkwater is determined to force through a move as soon as possible.

"I've got loads more to give. I'm open to going abroad, even though it will be difficult with my son," he said.

"I need an anchor and I need to sort out one side of my life, so if I can sort my football out, even if it is abroad, then that will help in the long term.

"It probably all comes down to patience and trust with me. I need to change for it to work, otherwise I'll be stuck in this vicious circle.

"If I can trust people who are good at their job and be patient then I can only see me building my career back up now. I can't see me staying in this situation. No chance."

Barcelona striker, Luis Suarez threatens to join LaLiga rivals

Barcelona striker, Luis Suarez, could snub a move to Juventus despite already agreeing to personal terms and joining Atletico Madrid, according to Deportes Cuatro.

Suarez looks set to leave Camp Nou this summer after new boss Ronald Koeman decided he won’t be part of his plans.

Juve are the clear favourites to land the 33-year-old, but now there is a new twist in the transfer saga.
But Suarez wants to take his time and consider all offers, before deciding his next move.

While he is open to moving to Serie A, a late approach from Atletico has created a dilemma, with the Uruguay international preferring to stay in Spain.

Diego Simeone is a big fan of his fellow South American and believes he is the perfect replacement for either Diego Costa or Alvaro Morata, with Atleti looking to offload one, or even both of their misfiring forwards.

EPL: De Bruyne opens up on Man City failing to sign Messi from Barcelona

Manchester City playmaker, Kevin De Bruyne, has said he is not bothered about the club failing to land Lionel Messi from Barcelona.

Messi tried unsuccessfully to force an exit from the Camp Nou this summer.

The 33-year-old informed the LaLiga giants via a fax message, that he wanted to activate a clause in his contract, that would allow her leave as a free agent.
Manchester City quickly emerged as favourites to sign Messi and reunite him with former mentor, Pep Guardiola.

However, the Argentine superstar has since made a u-turn and will stay with Barca for the 2020/2021 campaign.

“To be honest I didn’t really think about it. If it could have happened, it would have happened.

“If you can get Messi to your team you are always going to do it. I can see it from a playing perspective and especially as a club.

“Business wise, the amount of sponsors and money it would have attracted would have been huge.

“Even if you would have paid him a load of money, in a certain way you would get it all back. So I could understand the decision (to try) in that respect,” De Bruyne told SportsMail.

Tension in Barcelona squad as Griezmann takes Coutinho’s shirt number

Barcelona have unveiled Antoine Griezmann as their new No 7, ahead of the 2020/2021 season.

The LaLiga club confirmed this in a promo video posted on their social media and followed by a voiceover that said: “New desires. New dreams. Same ambition. Welcome back number seven.”

Griezmann is set to play a key under under Ronald Koeman, despite enduring an unimpressive debut campaign at the Nou Camp.

The French forward wore the No 17 shirt last season, but has now switched to No 7, which was vacant last campaign and last worn by Philippe Coutinho, who is currently without a squad number.

Griezmann joined Barca from Atletico Madrid last year for £108million, but could only score 15 goals in 48 appearances, as the club finished the campaign trophyless.

There had been suggestions that Griezmann could leave, after Lionel Messi ended up staying at the club.

But his change in squad number is the most certain sign he is still very much a prominent figure at the club.
However, it remains to be seen what happens with Coutinho, who spent last season on loan at Bayern Munich.

EPL: Giroud speaks on leaving Chelsea for Juventus

Chelsea striker, Olivier Giroud, has denied he is set to leave the club for Juventus this summer.

Recall that reports from Italian outlet, Gianluca DiMarzio, had claimed that Giroud have reached an agreement in principle with Juventus over a two-year deal at 4.5 million per season.

When asked about the speculation ahead of Chelsea’s Premier League opener against Brighton on Monday, Giroud told Telefoot: “Italians, they get carried away quickly.

“I was surprised to receive messages from friends this morning telling me about this rumour.

“That is far from being the case. I’m a Chelsea player, and I feel good here.

“I did not have the great end of the season that I did to leave like this, and not believe in my chances.

“I will fight for my place. But it is always good to get the attention of these kinds of clubs, it is flattering. But I remain focused on Chelsea.

“We’ll see what’ll happen in the coming weeks. But there is nothing signed or done. I prefer to deny it.”
Giroud, 33, faces competition for a starting spot at Chelsea from summer signings Timo Werner and Kai Havertz, as well as striker, Tammy Abraham.

EPL: Lampard clears air on Kante leaving Chelsea for Inter Milan

 September 12, 2020
[Image: kante.jpg]

Chelsea head manager, Frank Lampard, has played down speculation that midfielder, N’Golo Kante, could be set to leave the Blues for Inter Milan this summer.

Recall that reports earlier this week suggested that Kante had emerged as a target for Inter Milan manager, Antonio Conte, who is targeting at least three players, including Emerson Palmieri and Olivier Giroud from Chelsea this summer.

Conte wants to be reunited with Kante to improve his squad ahead of the 2020/21 season.

Reacting to the development ahead of Chelsea’s Premier League tie with Brighton on Monday, Lampard insisted that Kante is “fundamental” to his plans for the new season, adding that he would do everything within his power to keep the France international at Stamford Bridge.

Asked about reports linking Kante with a move to Inter Milan, Lampard told BBC Radio 5 Live: “I think pretty much every club in the world would want N’Golo Kante.

“I saw those reports as well. He is an incredible player, and I certainly do not want to lose him, no.

“He is fundamental to what I am trying to do. We can obviously talk about the attacking players we’ve but someone like N’Golo and the work he does in midfield.

“It was a difficult year for him last season because of the injuries.

“He looks fit and fresh at the moment so, no, he is a big deal to me, and of course I want to keep N’Golo.”
