Champions League: Zidane takes final decision on leaving Real Madrid after Man City loss

Real Madrid’s manager, Zinedine Zidane, has moved to kill off speculations about his future, insisting he will still be in charge next season.
Los Blancos’ 2019/2020 season ended on Friday night, with a 2-1 defeat to Manchester City in the Champions League last-16.
Madrid was as a result eliminated on a 4-2 aggregate.
Zidane was however able to wrestle the LaLiga title from fierce rivals Barcelona for the first time since 2017.
When asked if he planned to leave the Santiago Bernabeu, Zidane responded briefly and said there was no need asking more questions in that regard. .
“Well, I’m here. I’m Real Madrid’s coach until something happens which is out of the ordinary. I’m here, of course.
“You don’t have to think anything. I am the coach of Madrid, and that’s it.
“There are no more questions to ask in this regard. Now we are all going to rest and we will return to have a great season,” he told a press conference.

Jadon Sancho offered £9 million to snub Man Utd move

Borussia Dortmund will offer Jadon Sancho an improved contract, if Manchester United don’t match their £108million asking price by Monday, BILD reports.
The two clubs are at a deadlock over a fee for Sancho, with United believing Dortmund’s asking price is too high given the current economic climate.
The Bundesliga side will now try and tempt the England winger to stay at the club, with an enhanced deal on the £190,000-a-week he currently earns.
Sancho’s annual salary will be increased from 6 million euros (£5.4m) to 10 million euros (£9m).
It will be his third contract improvement since he signed for Dortmund in 2017. His present deals run until 2022.
However, that wage packet is still considerably less than what Sancho would be offered at United, which is believed to be around the £340,000-a-week mark.

Champions League: How Ronaldo reacted to Juventus’ exit

Juventus forward, Cristiano Ronaldo, cut a disconsolate figure after they were knocked out of the Champions League by Lyon on Friday night.
A year after their quarter-final defeat to Ajax, the Serie A champions were eliminated from the competition in the last 16.
This means their wait for a European trophy has now stretched to 25 years.
With Lyon 1-0 up from the first leg, Memphis Depay opened the scoring from 12 yards, after Rodrigo Bentancur was deemed to have fouled Houssem Aouar in the box.
Depay himself was harshly found to have handled a free-kick from Miralem Pjanic.
Ronaldo scored from the spot to make it 1-1 and then added a spectacular second.
Juve then pressed for a goal to win the tie, but Lyon held firm for a place in the last eight where they face Manchester City.
At the full-time whistle, Ronaldo could be seen turning towards the tunnel where he was comforted by Juve substitute, Georgio Chiellini.
He could then be seen shaking his head as he made his way down the tunnel in Turin, no doubt disappointed that he won’t be able to lift the Champions League in his native Portugal.

Juventus Appoint Andrea Pirlo As New Manager
I can confirm that Juventus have named Andrea Pirlo as their new head coach, just hours after-sacking Maurizio Sarri.
Pirlo was only named the club's Under-23 head coach last month, but has secured a major promotion before even taking charge of one match.
It will be a major challenge for the 41-year-old, who has never managed before, either at youth or senior level.

Bayern will now face Barca in a mouth-watering one-game knockout format in Lisbon on Friday.
Tough German lesson for Chelsea
A long season which started with a 4-0 hammering at Manchester United on 11 August 2019 ended - via a top-four Premier League finish and FA Cup final loss - in a heavy defeat and a reminder that Chelsea are still a work in progress.
Having been blown away by Bayern in 25 second-half minutes in the first leg at Stamford Bridge, it was always going to require something extra special by Lampard's side to turn it around in Munich.
The Chelsea boss described his side's challenge as an "opportunity to do something special" yet it turned into a damage limitation exercise inside the opening 10 minutes thanks to Lewandowski's precise finish from the spot.
There was a check by the video assistant referee to see if Lewandowski was on-side when he was clipped by keeper Willy Caballero, who received a yellow card for the foul.

It went from bad to worse when Mateo Kovacic, sent off in last week's FA Cup final defeat by Arsenal, carelessly conceded possession, allowing Lewandowski to set up Perisic to guide home and make it 5-0 on aggregate.

There have been many encouraging signs for Lampard and his young players during a testing first season in charge for the Blues boss, who is set for a busy close season as he readies his squad for the 2020-21 campaign which starts next month.
Although Brazil midfielder Willian looks set to join Arsenal after seven years at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea will look to kick on following the arrival of Germany forward Timo Werner and Morocco winger Hakim Ziyech.
Lewandowski shines as Bayern march on
Having wrapped up another Bundesliga title and German Cup, Bayern are eyeing a domestic and European treble - Hansi Flick's side now just two wins from the Champions League final on 23 August.
They face a tough test against Barcelona - 4-2 aggregate winners over Napoli - but they are a side in fine form - and with 31-year-old Lewandowski showing why he is one of the finest finishers in the world.
Having scored one and assisted the other two goals in the first leg, he was directly involved in all seven of Bayern goals over the two legs - three goals, four assists.
His two goals against Chelsea took his tally to 53 and he has found the net in 36 out of 44 matches (82%).
Lewandowski has also scored in all seven of his Champions League appearances this season (13 goals).

Barcelona manager, Quique Setien, has provided the latest update on captain, Lionel Messi’s injury following his side’s Champions League victory over Napoli on Saturday night.
Setien said Messi sustained a “fierce knock” after being kicked in the leg by Kalidou Koulibaly in Barca’s win 3-1 win over Napoli at Camp Nou.
Barcelona secured their place in the Champions League quarter-finals on 4-2 aggregate, having played 1-1 in the first leg back in February.
But Setien expects Messi to make a speedy recovery ahead of their Champions League last-8 clash with Bayern Munich on Friday.
“Lionel took quite a fierce knock in that challenge from Koulibaly,” Setien said at his post-match press conference.

Real Madrid forward, Eden Hazard, has come under heavy criticism over his team’s exit from Champions League at the hands of Lyon.
Former Chelsea striker, Tony Cascarino, slammed Hazard and accused him of failing to take his big-money transfer from the Blues to Real Madrid seriously.
Hazard ended his eight-year trophy-laden stint at Chelsea last summer when the Los Blancos agreed to pay £90million for his services.
“We all know how brilliant Hazard can be, we all know the difference he can make to a football team,” Cascarino told talkSPORT.

Chelsea on Saturday night made two Champions League records after their exit from the competition at the hands of Bayern Munich.
Bayern defeated Chelsea 4-1 in Germany to qualify for the last eight of the Champions on 7-1 aggregate, having won Lampard’s men 2-0 in the first leg at Stamford Bridge in February.
Robert Lewandowski, Ivan Perisic and Corentin Tolisso all scored for Bayern.
Tammy Abraham netted a goal for Frank Lampard’s side.
However, according to OptaJoe, Chelsea’s 7-1 defeat on aggregate to Bayern was the second-heaviest inflicted on an English team in Champions League history, behind only Arsenal’s 10-2 aggregate defeat in the last-16 in 2016-2017 campaign, also against Bayern Munich.

Willian confirms Chelsea exit as Arsenal move looms

Willian has announced he is leaving Chelsea after seven years with the club.
The Brazilian confirmed his exit in an open letter to fans on Sunday.
It read in part: “The time has now come to move on. I am certainly going to miss my teammates. I will miss all the staff at the club who’ve always treated me like a son and I will miss the fans.
“I leave with my head held high, safe in the knowledge that I won things here and always did my best in a Chelsea shirt!”
Willian is believed to have rejected a two-year contract extension with the Blues.
He will now sign for their London rivals Arsenal in the coming days after the Gunners offered him a three-year deal.

Bayer Leverkusen’s Kai Havertz has agreed a five-year deal with Chelsea, according to RMC Sport.
Havertz is one of the most sought-after players in Europe, having shone for the Bundesliga club since making his debut in the 2016/2017 campaign.
Chelsea are the frontrunners for the 21-year-old’s signature, with Frank Lampard keen to add the player to a forward line that noe has Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech. next season.
Havertz is also keen on moving to Stamford Bridge and has now agreed to personal terms with the Blues.
Chelsea and Leverkusen still have to finalize negotiations over a fee, with the Germans’ unwilling to lower their £90million valuation of the attacker.

Arsenal offer to pay off Ozil’s £18m contract
Arsenal are ready to reach an agreement over Mesut Ozil’s £18m contract nightmare, the UK Mirror reports.
The Gunners will make an offer to pay the German playmaker off or reach a deal to subsidise his £350,000-a-week wages if he joins another club.
Ozil is into the last year of his deal with the club and is not ready to leave the Emirates.
The 31-year-old is ready to sit out the last months of his contract, but Arsenal want to find a compromise to help free up money in their wage bill for transfer business this summer.
Ozil did not play a single minute for the Gunners after football returned in June.
He was also not allowed to join the rest of the squad to Wembley for the FA Cup final against Chelsea and travelled to Turkey instead.

Spanish forward, Pedro has sent a farewell message to Chelsea fans after confirming he has left the club, with the 33-year-old opting to join Serie A side, AS Roma on a free transfer.
His send-off message came just a few hours after Chelsea’s Champions League exit at the hands of Bayern Munich on Saturday night.
“After five wonderful years my stage at Chelsea FC comes to an end,” Pedro wrote on Instagram on Sunday.
“Thanks a lot to the club’s board, to the coaches and teammates I have had, and of course to the fans: thank you for the experience of being a member of your big family.
“I have been very happy here, you have made me feel like home.
“It has been a pleasure and an honour to play for this club and win the Premier League, FA Cup and Europa League titles, as well as competing in one of the world’s best football leagues.
“I made the right choice. I take with me wonderful and unforgettable memories. I say farewell very pleased with this stage of my career, and I am also very excited for the next to begin.
“Thanks and good luck for the future. Come on, Blues!!!”
Pedro joined Chelsea in 2015 from Barcelona.
In his five seasons at Stamford Bridge, Pedro scored a total of 44 goals in 232 games, including 3 scored in the just concluded Premier League season.

Tottenham Hotspur could make a surprise move for Arsenal’s Ainsley Maitland-Niles, the UK Sun reports.
The club has put the 22-year-old up for sale against manager Mikel Arteta’s wishes.
Maitland-Niles is eager for more playing time, having just started one Premier League game for the Gunners.
However, the versatile youngster did impress in the FA Cup against Manchester City and Chelsea.
Arteta is keen to keep Maitland-Niles in his squad, but Arsenal’s decision-makers feel differently.
The Gunners need to raise funds in order to spend this summer and believe they can get as much as £30million for Maitland-Niles.
Tottenham have now registered their interest in Maitland-Niles and made it known they would be keen to prise him away from their rivals.

Chelsea manager, Frank Lampard, has revealed why Bayern Munich knocked out his team from the Champions League on Saturday night at Allianz Arena.
Lampard said Chelsea was eliminated from the Champions because they were ‘caught cold’ early on with two goals in the first half and also did not make the most of a couple of half-chances against Bayern Munich.
Bayern defeated Chelsea 4-1 in Germany to advance into the last eight of the Champions on 7-1 aggregate, having won Lampard’s men 2-0 in the first leg at Stamford Bridge in February.
Robert Lewandowski, Ivan Perisic and Corentin Tolisso all scored for the Bundesliga champions, while Tammy Abraham did score a goal for the Blues.
“We were caught cold early on with the two goals in the first part of the game, which is disappointing, but I want to focus on the resilience and performance levels of a lot of players in the team,” Lampard was quoted by Chelsea’s official website as saying after the game.
“We competed well in the game, we got to 2-1, and we then did not make the most of a couple of half-chances.
Then we concede disappointing goals which were individual errors on the pitch. It was an interesting game, there was a lot of good, we are disappointed to lose, but we will be back.”

There was also criticism, which is normal, what is important though is that both the affection and criticism drove me to always give my all in every training session, every game, to be constantly improving until my very last minute in a Chelsea shirt!

Victor Osimhen Blasts Punch Newspaper For Fabricating False Stories About Him
Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen who recently signed for Italian Serie A side Napoli, has taken to his twitter page to blast Punch Newspaper for fabricating a false story about him.
Victor Osimhen joined Napoli from Lille last month for a record fee of €70 million which could potentially rise to €80 million.
Following a false story by Punch Newspaper about him with the headline which read, "I want to emulate Maradona at Napoli", Victor Osimhen has now come out to debunk such news stating that he has not granted any interview since his father died in May 2020 and such stories were false.
He warned Punch Newspaper against fabricating fake stories. Part of the post which was shared by Victor Osimhen on his twitter page read,

Two Atletico Madrid players test positive for COVID-19 ahead of Champions League quarterfinal against RB Leipzig on Thursday night

Spanish side, Atletico Madrid have confirmed that two senior players have tested positive for Coronavirus ahead of the club's Champions League quarterfinal clash against RB Leipzig on Thursday night.
"On Saturday 8 August, all members of the first team and the club's traveling party [set to head] to Lisbon underwent PCR tests at the Ciudad Deportiva de Majadahonda as required by UEFA protocol, [in order] to participate in the quarterfinals of the Champions League," the club confirmed in a statement .
"Among the results known today, two positives have appeared. Both individuals are isolated in their respective homes, and their results were immediately communicated to the Spanish and Portuguese health authorities, UEFA, the Royal Spanish Football Federation, the Portuguese Federation and the Higher Sports Council.
"The corresponding action protocol foreseen for these cases has been activated, which requires new PCR tests to be carried out on the first team and members of the expedition to Lisbon and the closest contacts of the positive cases.
"These tests will result in changes to training schedules, and in the structure and development of travel and accommodation in the Portuguese capital.
Atletico Madrid are scheduled to face RB Leipzig in the Champions League quarter-finals in Portugal on Thursday, August 13.

Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen have taken to Twitter to apologise to Nigerian news outlet Punch for the language he used in replying them few days ago.
Recall that the newspaper published a post where the new Napoli recruit was alleged to have made a statement of emulating club legend Diego Maradona of which he debunked by writing:
