The visitors got off to the best possible start when they scored with their first chance after just two minutes to stun the home crowd.
Georginio Wijnaldum flicked on a corner at the near post and Roberto Firmino was left with a simple tap-in from close range to break the deadlock.
The Andalusians looked to respond as Nolito saw his shot from inside the box tipped onto the right post by Loris Karius on 19 minutes, while Wissam Ben Yedder was inches away from equalising moments later with a strike that fizzed past the left post.
Instead it was the visitors who found the back of the net again on 22 minutes in what was almost a carbon copy of the first goal. Firmino's flick-on from a corner found an unmarked Sadio Mane at the back post and he headed past Sergio Rico from a few yards out.
The Merseyside giants appeared to be running away with the game when they scored a third on the half-hour, with Firmino firing into an open net after Mane's initial shot had been parried into the Brazilian's path by Rico.
Eduardo Berizzo's men had a mountain to climb as they went into the break still three goals down, but they reduced the deficit just six minutes after the restart when Ben Yedder beat Karius with a header from Ever Banega's free-kick.
A mistake from Alberto Moreno on the hour mark opened the door for the hosts as he fouled Ben Yedder inside the box after giving away possession with a poor back-pass. The French striker picked himself up and slotted home the resulting penalty to cut the deficit to one goal.
Karius prevented Sergio Escudero from restoring parity moments later with a volley that he tipped onto the crossbar, but Guido Pizarro sent the home fans into raptures at the death as he turned in a stoppage-time free-kick salvage a point for Sevilla.
